FRIENDS OF MORNINGSIDE CEMETERY met on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. Rochelle City Hall. Those present were Anne Titshaw, Tommie Kelley, Pat Bahnsen, James Sutton, Delane Titshaw, Wallace Lamb, Bettie Brown, James Rhodes, and Jim Fitzgerald. President Fitzgerald called the meeting to order to begin with a short meditation and prayer. Minutes of the August meeting and the treasurer's report were read and approved. Discussion centered around several continuing uncompleted projects. It was agreed that grass cutting and weeding would be done by the city crew and/or prison labor. Mayor Rhodes will contact Warden Toole at Wilcox State Prison and Representative Jimmy Pruett to request their assistance with general maintenance labor. Tommie Kelley reported that she had spoken to Joey Dennard about spraying perimeter fences to kill unwanted vines and weeks. Mayor Rhodes suggested that with a driver to help, the entire fence could be sprayed thoroughly and faster. Other to be completed projects are adding “crush and run along edges of drive paving to slow erosion, corner turn radiuses at intersections of drive paving, and speed bumps along Grady Street to reduce speeding through the cemetery. No progress was reported on repainting the cemetery sign at the intersection of US280 and Grady Street. FRIENDS requests again any information you may have of a painter who can do this job. Of continuing concern is the maintenance of the cemetery grounds WITHIN all family plots. As the state law stands, maintenance within a given plot is the responsibility of the owner(s) of the private property and it is strictly forbidden for anyone else to enter the privately owned areas. Several local citizens maintain the plots belonging to their families, but this leaves the plots, owned by family members who do not live nearby, or who are all deceased, without any good maintenance. The City and Friends sincerely request that anybody in the area, who is family of owned property in the cemetery, make arrangements to clean and maintain the property. If nobody is willing or able to do this, it is requested that a letter be sent to the City of Rochelle giving permission for the City to do minimum general grounds keeping of the privately owned plots. FRIENDS OF MORNINGSIDE CEMETERY is a volunteer group of citizens dedicated to helping the City maintain and improve the graveyard. Please join us in this effort. Contributions may be made to Friends of Morningside Cemetery, The City of Rochelle, P. O. Box 156, Rochelle, GA 31079.
