JUST GOT MARRIED!
Today there are two main characters - Marta and Igor. Love brought them together, and since they just said „I do” and started the journey called marriage, they definitely deserve the cover! Here they are - the most beautiful Newlyweds!
THE BRIDE THE GROOM
through the Groom’s eyes
A hopeless bookworm and a walking encyclopedia of Harry Potter trivia. Writes even better than she reads. Probably a future bestselling author of the ever-growing romantic fantasy genre. Undeniably the biggest Paramore fan on the planet, who never quite outgrew her teenage rebellion phase. If she could, she’d own a herd of horses and every dog in existence. Her best instrument? Playing on people’s nerves. Stubborn as a mule, though not exactly known for sticking to her resolutions. A walking GPS, unless she’s with Igor. Despite being born and raised in Szczecin, she doesn’t know the name of a single street in the city, except the one she lives on. Her favorite sport is couch lounging. The only person on Earth who can eat a single piece of chocolate and get overwhelmed by sweetness, despite loading half the sugar bowl into her coffee.

A football fan (and probably the biggest Arsenal supporter in history, though he’d never admit it), a metalhead, and a gaming enthusiast. The undisputed Excel wizard at home, and a Project Manager both by trade and by nature. His days seem to last 36 hours on average, allowing him to squeeze in football training, guitar practice, watch all the matches he can find and a few TV series, catch up on gaming streams, shopping, and let’s not forget cooking. He even manages to go for a run now and then, if he finds a spare moment. Currently, he’s on a mission to cover every wall in the house with new guitars, all while coming up with brilliant new excuses for not listening to me („But I’m wearing headphones!”). I’m not saying he’s Batman, but I’ve never seen him and Batman in the same room at the same time.
PARAMORE
The Only Exception
Marta and Igor decided to dance their first dance to the song “The Only Exception” by Paramore. The choice could not have been different! After all, there is no bigger fan of this band than Marta, and on top of that, this song reflects their story most perfectly. It tells about a unique love that breaks barriers, proving that true affection can be the exception to the rule - just as these two are unique to each other, in every way.

Marriage anniversaries are officially recognized so that we can celebrate the independence and greatness of the united kingdom of love. The thing is we can easily get those anniversaries mixed up. Paper, wooden, cotton. What’s marriage got to do with… wood?
Sometimes, it is romantic. The “youngest” first wedding anniversary is endearing. Though marriage can’t boast much experience and doesn’t seem impressive, there are strong feelings. Still drunk with love, our belief in love is so great that there is no paper in the world that would express its greatness. Yet “paper” from the first wedding anniversary makes some people think of a pact signed with the devil… Yes, indeed, the very first year of marriage is when we get to know each other very well...
The second anniversary, aka cotton wedding. Is marriage like 100 percent cotton or what? Okay! Cotton is still pure – love without synthetics. Only top quality, not made in China.
Now it gets more interesting. The third anniversary, leather. Well, this one is obvious – leather is quality and durabi-
lity. You are as thick as thieves, congrats! It is time when you start to understand each other without words.
Flower anniversary doesn’t need explaining – your marriage blooms like the most nurtured flower. Btw, dear husbands, red roses work wonders so laying flowers by the love monument from time to time is worthwhile.
The fifth anniversary is called the wooden anniversary.
A milestone in the history of your love kingdom. Every step of the way, you sail through life together on this marriage raft which, as you know very well by now, is a solid piece of… wood that resists any storm. If the ship crew is in sync, then sailing is a wonderful adventure, not just struggling with the powerful sea.
It’s not always that extreme, though. After the wood anniversary, there’s time for the nice and heart-warming wool and even sugar anniversaries.
The strength in the family kingdom of love has reached its peak and anniversaries that follow only confirm the durability and independence of marriage: bronze, aluminium, steel… Yes, some people hear the clash of the weapons. In this case, the clash results in
one half staying in the bedroom while the other half moves on the couch, building a barrier out of socks.
Life doesn’t seem to like routine so after the metal years, there’s time for the 13th anniversary – lace, no bad luck.
Once you go past the “unlucky” thirteen, you can embrace the power of crystal, the exclusiveness of china, pearls and corals to finally reach the 50th golden anniversary. In Poland, such an anniversary is honoured by the authentic Medal for Long Marital Life, awarded by the mayor. The love award is 35 mm in diameter and is star shaped. You get your own oxidised star yet the star that shines the brightest is the one that said “yes, I do”.
The best thing is you don’t need any fancy recipes to celebrate. There’s only one thing that wedding anniversaries feed on: love with a pinch of warmth. The feeling that joins two people together tastes like the best cocktail in the world. Drink it and enjoy it no matter if it’s a toast during your first, fifth or fifteenth anniversary. Let it always be lovingly sweet!

DEGREES OF KINSHIP
THE SPEAR OR THE DISTAFF SIDE?
Of course, we should start with a division into the SPEAR (paternal) and the DISTAFF (maternal) SIDE of the family. They refer to a traditional allocation of duties in the family - when the mother spins (a distaff is a tool used in spinning), the father fights (hence the symbolic spear). The ancestors were called AGNATES in the case of paternal and COGNATES in the case of maternal ones.
WUJEK, STRYJEK AND ALL THE OTHERS
Today, siblings of parents are called wujostwo However, in the past the term WUJ was reserved solely to a mother’s brother. His wife was called WUJENKA or WUJNA
A father’s brother was called STRYJ, and his wife was STRYJENKA or STRYJNA. These terms are still being used sometimes, but they are slowly becoming obsolete.
A sister of our parent, both father and mother, is called CIOTKA. But in the past we would not call her husband wujek, but we would use a term POCIOT or NACIOT
Cousins of our father and mother could also be called wuj, ciotka and stryj, but with a possible distinction of a level of kinship.
Talking about wuj, stryj, and ciotka, we should not
forget about their children. Today, they are all simply called cousins. In the past, we had BRACIA and SIOSTRY (brothers and sisters) CIOTECZNI (the distaff side) and STRYJECZNI (on the spear side).
WHEN YOUR SIBLINGS HAVE CHILDREN
We also become wuj, stryj and ciotka, accordingly, when our siblings have children. But who are they to us? In the case of a sister, the terms SIOSTRZENIEC (nephew) and SIOSTRZENICA (niece) were used in the past, and are used today. But children of a brother were BRATANEK and BRATANICA only to a woman, but to a man they were SYNOWIEC and SYNOWICA (or NIEWIASTKA). Other terms that have been equally forgotten are NIECI and NIEŚCIORY, that is, general terms describing children of the siblings.
MARRIAGE, THAT IS, SWAĆBA
Let’s move to the theme of this day! Today, when two people get married, they become the marriage. In the past, we would call this relationship SWADŹBA (or possibly SWAĆBA), based on the verb swatać (matchmaking).
The word swaćba is also clearly associated with the term SWAT – or its female counterpart: SWATKA – that is, parents of a daughter’s hus-
band. However, parents of a son’s wife would not be called this way. In the old Polish, they were called WSPÓŁTEŚĆ and WSPÓŁTEŚCIOWA, respectively.
Of course, TEŚĆ and TEŚCIOWA (or in the past, also CIEŚĆ and CIEŚCIOWA) are parents of a wife. Today, both these terms are also used to describe parents of a husband, while in the past a woman would call them ŚWIEKR or ŚWIEKIER (husband’s father) and ŚWIEKRA (husband’s mother).
There were also appropriate terms for son’s wife and daughter’s husband. Today’s daughter in law in the past was referred to as SNECHA or – a diminutive form – SNESZKA. Only a daughter’s husband have always been and remained ZIĘĆ, although in the past a term ZIĘTASZEK was also used.
GREAT UNCLE AND GREAT AUNT
The senior members of the family, our grandfather (dziadek) and grandmother (babcia), in the old Polish, were called also less diminutive forms of DZIAD and BABA
In the past, we were not wnuczki (grandchildren), but WNĘK (grandson) and WNĘKA, WNĘCZKA, or WNUKWIA (granddaughter), respectively. There were also universal terms for grandchildren, which could be used regardless of their sex, that is DZIECIĘCIE or CZĘD
And how should we call a sister or a brother of one of our grandparents? In the past, they had names for that, too! Our grandmother’s sister was WIELKA CIOTKA or PRACIOTKA, while her brother was called WIELKI WUJ, STARY WUJ or PRZEDWIEĆ
Concerning siblings of our granddad, the sisters were called the same way as in the case of the grandmother, but his brothers were not wielki wuj to his grandchildren, but WIELKI STRYJ, PRASTRYJ or PRZESTRYJ.
FURTHER DEGREES OF KINSHIP
And when it may seem that we’ve already discussed all of them... it’s just the beginning! In Old Polish, there was a distinctive term for every level of kinship.
In the past, a wife would call a sister of her husband ZEŁWA, ŻEŁWIA, ZOŁWA, ZEŁWICA or ŻOŁWICA, and her husband ZEŁWIN, while a husband’s brother was called DZIEWIERZ and his wife – JĄTREW or JĄTREWKA
And it was similar on the other side. A wife’s sister was ŚWIEŚĆ, and her husband was PASZENOG, while a wife’s brother was SZURZY or SZURZYN and his wife was SZURZYNA. Only a brother’s wife remains unchangingly BRATOWA, while a sister’s husband is SZWAGIER known to this day (though in the past he was also called SWAK).
