The Art of Marquetry at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars One example of the intricate craftsmanship that takes place in Goodwood, is the exquisite marquetry work which is featured in each and every single Rolls-Royce motor car. From the finest detailing to the boldest statement, the marquetry team brings the most original and innovative ideas to life, taking inspiration from anywhere: a family motif, a precious stone, or, in one instance, the desire to use the wood of a favourite tree felled on a private estate.

Following the guiding principle set by Sir Henry Royce, ‘Take the best that exists and make it better and when it doesn’t exist, design it’, the Rolls-Royce craftsmen at the Home of Rolls-Royce

in Goodwood, England, continue to faithfully follow this ethos by pushing the boundaries and innovating in artisanal crafts working with woods, leathers, paints and metals.

An astonishing 20,000 wood veneer combinations are available in each and every Rolls-Royce car. Each car has 120 different wooden parts which are created with individual decorative veneers, making them unique to every customer, and it can take up to 40 pieces of quality wood to create each veneer. But this is merely the start - each individual part is then lacquered, carefully sanded, finessed and rigorously inspected to ensure only flawless pieces of wood are used in the creation of the car.

Colour: Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ Scope for Limitless Possibilities Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has always been driven by the philosophy of its co-founder, Sir Henry Royce, who said: ‘Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it’. This ethos has been exemplified in the luxury marque’s constant pursuit of creating the best motor cars in the world for over a century. As well as its engineering excellence, the marque allows its valued clientele an exceptional scope for personalisation through its renowned Bespoke programme, which allows every customer the opportunity to custom-create a truly unique Rolls-Royce motor car. Through the Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke programme, the opportunities for the choice of coachline – (the famous stripe that appears on each and every Rolls-Royce) the Spirit of Ecstasy, (the iconic ornament that adorns every car), wood, leather and most notably the exterior paints are endless. For the choice of exterior colour specifically, Rolls-Royce currently boasts a palette of over 44,000 paint colours to select from, yet on occasion the brand’s discerning clientele may wish to tell a story of their own and can opt to commission their own unique paint colour, created exclusively for them and named after them. Customers can draw inspiration for the colour from anywhere, from their favourite tie, lipstick colour, species of flower or even a childhood toy, and it will be faithfully created by the Bespoke paints team and rendered visible via the Bespoke configurator, which allows customers to immerse themselves in

20

the design process and visualize their car. Once the colour is chosen, it is then administered to the car through a meticulous process which includes applying nine layers of paint to the body of the car, ensuring the colour remains true to the wishes of the customer. The surface of the car is then painstakingly hand-sanded before being sealed with a powdered lacquer to guarantee an impeccable finish. For the first time in the brand’s history in June 2014 – the exterior colour was also extended to the engine with a vibrant blue that was featured in the limited edition Bespoke Waterspeed Drophead Coupe, another example of the extent to which painstaking craftsmanship is applied through the Bespoke Programme. The unparalleled Bepoke programme also

allows customers to extend their unique colour scheme to the interior leather of the car. Only the most premium leather is treated by a selected team of specialists, where colour is applied directly to the leather using a process called drum pigmentation, which creates a colour surface that is six times thinner than any other premium automotive leather. This specialized process ensures that the colour permeates throughout and allows a consistent colour, regardless of accidental scratches or wear-and-tear. Vibrant colours have often been the crowning highlight in Bespoke themes in recent years. One example is the Turchese Blue paint which featured on the RollsRoyce ‘Ghawwas’ Phantom Coupe and saw its inspiration from the beauty of pearl gemstones and aquatics.

3rd H.O.G Rally 2106

The Kingdom of Bahrain hosted from the 10th to the 12th November the 3rd Annual Bahrain H.O.G Rally. This event further cemented Bahrain as the home of Motor Sports in the region. If you are a Harley owner and you were not there you lost out big time. It was an amazing event. Gaz was there and we even had the joy of handing out awards for the Best Display and also the Editor’s Choice awards. The HOG Rally is the most important event in the region for Harley enthusiasts. It was sponsored by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority. In attendance were more than 5000 bikers. Sheikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa the Director of the Bahrain Chapter was so excited to see their work come to fruition and he had made sure that there was going to be three action packed days for every Harley fan young or old. Every participant in the Rally was given a Rally Kit. On the 11th there was a carnival of Harleys and there was a display of all the 2017 models which caught the attention of all the people. There was so much to do and there were some amazing rock bands playing as well as a custom bike contest. I saw the kids enjoying the Kids Zone with lots to do for smaller kids and even a mini cinema. It really had everything and was a huge success. I had a great time at the H.O.G Annual Rally and I can’t wait for next year’s event which is somehow going to be even better than this years. I can’t wait for that.

I was very intrigued to check out the first SUV from the Maserati family. I have always been a huge fan of Maserati and couldn’t wait to take the Levante for a spin. The first thing I have to mention is if you are expecting a beast you will be slightly disappointed this is definitely leaning towards the crossover side of the SUV market. Levante is a football team in Spain but this car is named after a wind that occurs in the Mediterranean. It does feel weird seeing a Maserati crossover but it does not look particularly odd as you can imagine from our Italian brothers. Where Maserati has probably lost on the SUV history part of this range is more than made up for when it comes to style and luxury. If you are someone that wants a wow factor when they buy a new car this will come the moment you get inside this car. It is the difference between buying a suit off the peg and then getting a tailor to make a unique suit for you. Yeah the suit fits but it doesn’t feel like it was made for you and this is what the interior of the Levante does. It just looks spectacular. The red leather makes you think of its stable mate the Ferrari and silk as well. It looks passionate and exotic and perfectly at home inside the Levante. It is brash but not over the top like an American

30

and it just looks perfect. When you sit inside this car you do not feel short changed. You can see where every last fill went in creating this masterpiece. I always drive cars without reading all the marketing rubbish that I am fed and it was only when reading this that I saw the interiors were designed by none other than Ermenegildo Zegna. After staring at the interiors for a bit too long like you do when you see anything that’s this beautiful I finally got round to driving it. I was already won over by its looks but I wanted to see how it drove. The engine is a 3 litre V6. The model I drove had 430hp and it went from 0-100 km/ph in 5.2 seconds. Unbelievably rapid. We took it out onto the track and I managed to get it up to an insanely fast 264 km/ph. It feels extremely balanced and overall it is a great car to drive. It is very responsive and handles beautifully. It is fitted with technology that senses the weight load and recalculates exactly what is needed and where to provide as smooth a ride as possible. Maserati’s first entry into the SUV market is a huge success. It is great value for money and feels perfectly luxurious. It is fast and as good a drive as it is to sit inside. An absolute storming ride and it is already putting pressing on the old classic Porsche Cayenne.

The Land Rover Discovery has been around about as long as any SUV I can remember but what’s new about this version and can it bring anything new to the table? The first SUV I ever drove was a Land Rover Discovery and it gave me a taste for these big boys of the road. It was with a little excitement that I found myself reacquainted with this old friend. On first impressions the Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE looks. I was very impressed by the look of the Evoque and this new version looks like it could well be the Evoque’s big brother. It is a beautiful looking SUV as you would expect from Land Rover who are really at the top of the game when it comes to designing SUVs. Inside is where most of the changes have occurred and are mainly to the tech. With technology moving so fast they obviously did not want to be left behind. The touchscreen is now 10.2 inch instead of the 8 inch of its predecessor. It is a lot more user friendly and has a great innovation of Bluetoothing all of your important items so you know if you have left the house without your wallet or house keys. Space that was a bit lacking in the Evoque is more evident in the Discovery Sport. Even in the boot there is a bit of legroom and can easily fit seven peo-

34

ple in. The leather seats are perfectly smooth and feel quite exquisite. Performance is exactly what you would expect from the same team that makes Jaguars so special. The 2 litre engine has a nine speed transmission and can top out at 200km/ph and can get from 0-100 km/ ph in a very sporty 8.2 seconds especially when you consider that it weighs almost two tonnes. So many SUVs want to be big cars but the Discovery Sport has real crossover ability. It can tow two and a half tonnes and when I took it off road it was a lot of fun. It is very responsive and there is a bit of roll at top speeds but that’s exactly what I would expect from Land Rover. Do we really want a smooth ride? The Discovery Sport comes in four different models from the Pure to the SE, HSE and the HSE Luxury. I drove the HSE. The Discovery Sport has not had a radical change to it but then it did not need it. It is refined elegance and they just made a great product greater. The improvements have definitely improved it and the car now has some great tech to go with that of its rivals. In an ever expanding market Land Rover is still ahead of its rivals thanks to the release of the new Discovery Sport. It has that wow factor that Land Rover is so capable of.

TEST DRIVE

Some days I get very excited on my way to test drive a car. I can be a bit of a car snob and then other days I can be a bit apprehensive. The result is sometimes I am so excited to drive a new Ferrari or Lamborghini that it often fails to fulfil my dreams and conversely sometimes my expectations are so low that a car often surprises me. The Volvo Brand is hardly one to conjure up excitement like other more famous marques might. It has often been renowned for its safety rather for its head turning ability. Now personally my petrol headed chums, that’s not the worst thing ever. Sometimes your reliable friend is more fun that your crazy friend or gets you into trouble and also as I get older I start to worry about foolish stuff like not dying. On first impressions the S90 could pass for a Jaguar it has that same long body. I tried my hardest to fault it but I couldn’t it looks very nice as you would expect from Volvo. It is elegant and would not look out of place alongside some of its more expensive rivals. I really like the design of the front spoiler. The lights look very beautiful. Inside it is very spacious. The Nordic wood gives the car a very unique smell and shows off classic Scandinavian design. The seats are very

38

comfortable and easily adjustable but what I really liked was the fact that you can adjust the steering wheel and you don’t just have the usual two or three default settings. I was particularly impressed by the connectivity. It has a split screen so you can use your phone and also use your in car features. This is one of the new safety features and it makes it a lot easier to control. Starting up the car there is a roar that will get even the most ardent non-believers a kick in the right direction. This comes from an impressive twin engine. It is incredibly quiet and also extremely comfortable even at high speeds. The best quality of this car is the fact that it is all wheel drive so it is very fast out of corners especially the tighter ones. Overall I think the S90 is a great car. It does not have the reputation as its rivals the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 series but it more than lives up to both them in terms of design and space and performance. The one way this car beats its rivals is in the number and quality of its safety features. If you are someone with a family and also concerns for your safety then I would definitely recommend this car for you. It looks good and it takes care of you. That is a winning combination in my eyes.

QX Sport Inspiration: A daring new SUV vision from INFINITI infiniti qx sport

40

41

FEATURE

• Hints at future INFINITI mid-sized premium SUV • Latest interpretation of ‘Powerful Elegance’ form language • Design evolved for European premiere in Paris The INFINITI QX Sport Inspiration is an elegant and powerful expression of progressive SUV design. Laying down markers for future INFINITI QX models, the QX Sport Inspiration explores the brand’s vision for a next-generation, premium midsize SUV. The concept makes its European premiere at the 2016 Paris Motor Show (Mondial de l’Automobile), and includes several new design elements. The QX Sport Inspiration stands out in its segment with its taut lines, muscular haunches, high visual center of gravity,

long bonnet and raked, coupe-like silhouette. Immediately recognizable as an INFINITI, the QX Sport Inspiration is inspired by INFINITI’s ‘Powerful Elegance’ form language and bears the brand’s design hallmarks – including the signature double-arch grille, focused ‘human eye’ headlamps, ‘crescent-cut’ pillar and masculine, fluid body sculpting. Flowing lines and advanced craftsmanship characterize the spacious and beautifully appointed interior, which follows INFINITI’s ‘driver-centric, passenger-minded’ approach to cabin architecture. The interior’s color palette – predominantly black and white with flashes of the hide’s natural tan color, as well as new dark brown leather for the Paris Motor Show – is striking, yet harmoniously blended through careful use of line, form, and texture.

“The QX Sport Inspiration is a statement of intent from INFINITI, showcasing a daring design philosophy and a demonstration of our capabilities in the mid-size SUV segment.” Roland Krueger, President of INFINITI The concept promises off-road versatility, aided by its raised, 230 mm (9.1 in) ground clearance, as well as the empowering, in-control on-road driving characteristics and cruising comfort that is expected of any INFINITI. The concept features a lean, purposeful form, with a short front overhang and wide stance – total width (excluding rear-view cameras) is approx. 1,900 mm (74.8 in), while length is 4,600 mm (181 in).

“The QX Sport Inspiration is a statement of intent from INFINITI, showcasing a daring design philosophy and a demonstration of our capabilities in the mid-size SUV segment.” INFINITI has launched a number of new models recently which adhere closely to the form and philosophy of concept models – notably the Q30, the QX30 and the Q60. All share a suite of signature design cues that help ensure each is immediately recognizable as an INFINITI. The QX Sport Inspiration evolves these

42

signature design elements, including a new interpretation of INFINITI’s hallmark ‘crescent-cut’ D-pillar, where the leading edge of the crescent is raised – echoing that of the acclaimed Q80 Inspiration Concept. Bringing added emphasis to this feature, the curvature of the D-pillars is mirrored in the lines of the rear hatch window. In profile the bodywork tapers down from the concept’s roof (1,650 mm – 64.9 in – maximum height) toward a rear hatch that has been angled to accentuate the vehicle’s ‘lean-forward’, coupe-like silhouette. At the front, the line from the top of INFINITI’s familiar double-arch grille extends through the sharp, high-performance, focused ‘human-eye’ headlamps, with new chrome detail for its Paris appearance. The ‘humaneye’ element is another INFINITI signature design theme and, contoured around the edge of the hood, forms a character line that runs over the wide, flared front wheel arches and along the flanks to the tapered rear.

Emotional final victory for Audi Sport Team Joest at FIA WEC Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain

German manufacturers enjoy dominant 1-2 in swansong race Retiring driver Mark Webber helps Porsche claim podium finish Porsche no. 2 trio of Jani-Dumas-Lieb secure drivers’ world title Bahrain Motorsport Festival comes to a spectacular end. Audi Sport Team Joest fulfilled a dream exit from the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) tonight, following an outstanding one-two in the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC). The no. 8 R18 Hybrid driven by Lucas di Grassi, Loic Duval and Oliver Jarvis clinched a well-deserved victory ahead of teammates Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer in Audi’s no. 7 car. It was an emotional result for the German manufacturers, who announced last month their withdrawal from endurance racing and Le Mans following the completion of the WEC’s season-ending round in Bahrain. Also making his final appearance in the sport was Porsche’s Mark Webber, who also had reason to celebrate after steering his team to the last overall podium spot in third place. Webber, who is retiring from racing, was in the cockpit of Porsche’s no. 1 919 Hybrid as

44

it crossed the finish line behind the victorious Audi pair. To add to their victory, Audi set a distance record for the Bapco 6 Hours of Bahrain after completing 201 laps. Following the race, di Grassi commented: “We are proud to take the ‘Four Rings’ on the top of the podium for the last race; it’s where we belong.” Jarvis said: “The emotions are unbelievable. To take the last win and last pole position for

an Audi car, it is very special.” Duval added: “We wanted to finish with a great result. To close the door with this kind of victory is well deserved for the whole team. The emotion is super high.” Meanwhile, Porsche’s no. 2 team of Neel Jani, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb secured the FIA World Endurance Drivers’ Championship despite finishing sixth – one position behind their closest rivals from Toyota Gazoo Racing featuring Mike Conway, Stephan Sarrazin and Kamui Kobayashi.

The drivers’ title made it a double for Porsche in the second successive year, after they also won the FIA World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship. It was almost a disaster for the trio after suffering damage on their left-rear tyre and rear wing around an hour into the race. They needed to stop to make the changes, costing them a few places and plenty of lost time. But in the end they managed to claim just enough points for them to take home their crown. Jani said of their title victory: “Winning in Le Mans this year and now world championship, it’s simply amazing. It can’t get any better!” Di Grassi was in the car at the chequered flag as his team completed the grueling endurance event, which began in the daylight and concluded under the brilliant BIC floodlights which lit up the Sakhir sky. The runners-up enjoyed the same 201 lap output, but Fassler was 16.419 seconds behind his teammate in the end. Porsche’s Webber, Hartley and Fassler were also on 201 laps but were one minute 17.001 seconds behind the winners. Toyota Gazoo Racing’s Sebastien Buemi, Anthony Davidson and Kazuki Nakajima finished fourth. Each of the top six were running Hybrid cars in the LMP1 class. With

their one-two in Bahrain, Audi make their exit from endurance racing the same way they won in Sakhir in the WEC’s inaugural season in 2012. Audi end their tenure in endurance racing and Le Mans after 18 successful years. The Bahrain marshals commemorated Audi’s final race by holding up the Bahrain flag next to a large banner while standing track side during the formation lap. The banner read the message: “Thank you, Audi. We will miss you.”

Meanwhile, G-Drive Racing’s Roman Rusinov, Rene Rast and Alex Brundle were the top team in the LMP2 category in their Oreca 05-Nissan. Aston Martin Racing’s Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen in their Vantage V8 won the LMGTE Pro class; and Abu Dhabi-Proton Racing’s Patrick Long, Khaled Al Qubaisi and David Heinemeier Hansson claimed the LMGTE Am category.

Hiltbrand and Martins are karting world champions! Pedro Hiltbrand of CRG SpA and Victor Martins of VDK Racing were this evening crowned the undisputed world champions of karting. Hiltbrand clinched the title in the CIK-FIA World Championship, while Martins was the winner in the CIK-FIA World Junior Championship. Both newly crowned champions earned their titles after winning the final race of their respective categories, each of which featured 34 karters. All the action was held as part of the first-ever Bahrain Motorsport Festival. The action took place at Bahrain International Karting Circuit. The world championship and junior world championship were the two biggest and

most significant international karting events of the year, with participants from 35 countries around the world. They were also the only CIK meetings organised outside of Europe in 2016. Commission Internationale de Karting (CIK) President and Bahrain Motor Federation President Shaikh Abdulla bin Isa Al Khalifa was on hand to watch the proceedings, as were Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) Chairman of the Board Arif Rahimi and BIC Chief Executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa. CIK Vice-President Kees van De Grint was also in attendance along with other high-ranking officials. In the world final, Hiltbrand was on the winning end of a heated battle with last year’s world KF champion Karol Basz of

Kosmic Racing Dept in the 22-lap sprint. Starting from second on the grid alongside pole-sitter Alexander Smolyar of Ward Racing, Hiltbrand got off to a fantastic start and immediately snatched away the lead. Basz moved up front for a brief period but even after Hiltbrand regained first place on lap three, the battle remained tight between the pair with the gap going no larger than 0.5 seconds. Hiltbrand led all the way up to lap 15 but Basz made another move for the front and looked on his way to claiming the victory. But Hiltbrand was determined to finish strong, and with just four laps remaining, the Spaniard managed to take back first place. The world junior championship originally featured close to 100 drivers from all over the world.

Jackson roars to Pro Mod victory in season-opening drag races at BIC Steve Jackson powered Bahrain1Racing to a resounding victory in the Pro Mod category to highlight a thrilling opening round in the 2016/2017 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship. The multi-titled American racer was making his highly anticipated debut in the national meeting, which concluded in the wee hours of Saturday morning at Bahrain International Circuit’s (BIC) world-class quarter-mile drag strip. Jackson defeated Kuwaiti Bader Korshid in the final to claim first place in the ultracompetitive Pro Mod class. He had a blistering run of 3.824 seconds with a speed of 314.86kph in his Camaro while Korshid could only manage a 5.247s time after having car issues.

In their first round elimination runs, Jackson beat countryman Gary White of E Kanoo Racing Team in the semi-finals while Korshid overcame Qatari Mahana Naemi. MIKKELSEN SIGNS OFF WITH AUSTRALIA WIN

ANDREAS MIKKELSEN CLINCHED AN EMOTIONAL VICTORY AT KENNARDS HIRE RALLY AUSTRALIA ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON AS VOLKSWAGEN BOWED OUT OF THE FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 1-2 FINISH.

“We challenged the world champion and beat him fair and square on the same road conditions. It’s my best victory but it’s sad to see this team and the car come to an end.” He repelled a fierce attack from teammate and world champion Sébastien Ogier, who spun away his victory chances on the dusty Bucca speed test early this morning. Mikkelsen achieved his third career win by 14.9sec over his Polo R colleague. It wasn’t enough to secure the Norwegian the runner-up position in the drivers’ standings. Third place for Thierry Neuville in this closing round, a further 57.7sec behind in a Hyundai i20, clinched second in the points for the Belgian behind the already-crowned Ogier. Mikkelsen and Ogier delivered a perfect finale to four years of WRC domination by the German manufacturer. It was the team’s 43rd win from 52 rallies and came after an exciting conclusion in sweltering and dusty New South Wales forests near Coffs Harbour. Mikkelsen started today under heavy pressure with a slender 2.0sec advantage over Ogier. The Frenchman reduced it to just three-tenths midway through the long Bucca stage before spinning and allowing Mikkelsen to ease through the

54

final three tests. “This is a perfect end to the season,” said Mikkelsen. “All year consistency and pace was our aim with the championship in mind, but I came here with nothing to lose. I could go flat out and see what we could do. “We challenged the world champion and beat him fair and square on the same road conditions. It’s my best victory but it’s sad to see this team and the car come to an end.” Hayden Paddon had an outside chance of victory in third but his i20 swiped a bank and knocked the rear left tyre off the rim. The time loss promoted Neuville onto the podium and he didn’t need to chase bonus points in the final live TV

Power Stage to finish runner-up in the championship. Paddon’s problems relegated the Kiwi to fifth, but he overhauled team-mate Dani Sordo for fourth by 1.6sec. Mads Østberg couldn’t keep Sordo behind him after dust inside his Ford Fiesta RS impaired visibility and he finished sixth, while team-mate Eric Camilli rolled out of seventh after hitting a bank. Ott Tänak eventually claimed seventh, ahead of WRC 2 winner Esapekka Lappi and a fast recovering Jari-Matti Latvala. Lorenzo Bertelli lost time when a broken rear differential put his Fiesta RS in twowheel drive mode, but the Italian finished 10th.

Lorenzo ends win drought in last Yamaha start Jorge Lorenzo finished his time with Yamaha with a commanding victory at Valencia in the 2016 MotoGP season finale, as Marc Marquez won a spirited fight for second place.

pair and leaves Suzuki with a fifth-place finish.

Lorenzo secured a 44th and final win for Yamaha before moving to Ducati in 2017 by 1.185 seconds after leading from start to finish. It was Lorenzo’s first win since the Mugello race in late-May, and Yamaha’s first since Valentino Rossi’s victory at Barcelona a fortnight later. Polesitter Lorenzo got an early jump as Marquez was slow away from second and dropped to sixth and Andrea Iannone went the other way, vaulting from seventh to second. Lorenzo pulled away immediately, settling into a rhythm in the low-1m31s. Behind him, Iannone led Maverick Vinales and Rossi, while Marquez was quickly back into fifth place.

then Marquez. Honda’s Marquez went through a similar process as Rossi while trying to pass Iannone, and eventually claimed second place. Marquez was able to skip clear, and while he more than halved Lorenzo’s lead, he ultimately finished his titlewinning season with second place. Rossi fought back at Iannone in the closing laps, the pair trading places several times again before Iannone secured a podium in his final start for Ducati. That left Rossi fourth, while his 2017 team-mate Vinales dropped behind the

Tech3 Yamaha’s Pol Espargaro was the top satellite rider in sixth, beating Andrea Dovizioso - who was in the fight for second early - by 0.039s. Aleix Espargaro joined his brother in hauling in Dovizioso, and finished eighth, while Bradley Smith and Aprilia’s Alvaro Bautista rounded out the top 10. KTM’s MotoGP debut ended early, with Mika Kallio retiring after 20 laps, having been last and more than five seconds behind the rider in front when he pitted for the first time. Race winners this year, Dani Pedrosa and Cal Crutchlow’s seasons finished with crashes, Pedrosa from seventh at Turn 2 early, Crutchlow while ninth at Turn 7, just after the halfway mark.

By the time Rossi took third from Vinales, Iannone was half-a-second clear, but Rossi wasted little time in erasing that margin. Rossi and Iannone essentially spent the rest of the race fighting each other, the latter using the Ducati’s noted engine power to breeze back past down the main straight whenever Rossi was able to sneak past. The first real exchange came on laps seven and eight of 30, and Rossi then overshot Turn 1 after his second pass. He could not make a decisive move until lap 10, by which time Lorenzo was 3.931s clear. Lorenzo’s lead continued to grow and hit five seconds, before he cruised home on his final laps with Yamaha. Rossi could not pull away in the fight for second, and was passed by Iannone and

COVERSTORY I interviewed Sami AlHaddad last week he is an absolute legend and I am not just saying that because he is the current Bahrain Bodybuilding Champion and even made to the World Cup for bodybuilders Mr Olympus. He likens what he does to working in movies as when he gets on stage he has to portray a role. He has not been in a movie yet but he thinks if he was he would love to be a hero. Sami was born on the 24th of June 1973 in Muharraq but grew up in Isa

58

Town where he still lives to this day. His hobbies are bike riding, fishing and shooting in which he travelled a lot to Kuwait where they have a big shooting range and is an expert sniper. We talked about work and he said he couldn’t believe at first to make a business out of his hobby but due to the fact that he was so successful this was what happened. People began to sponsor him and he became his own brand. Lots of companies wanted to be associated with Sami and he kept making more and

more money. Following on from this he decided to start a gym and the people that had sponsored him now wanted to invest into the gym alongside banks. His gym is in my opinion the best gym in Bahrain. It is of course the famous Blacksmith Gym in Adhari Park. After that he now has his own supplement company, Forge, which can be found throughout the GCC. Moving on we chatted about cars and Sami said that the car he wants to buy is the Porsche 911 Turbo. His favourite

modern car is the Nissan GT-R because it was built out of precision and it can embarrass more famous and expensive cars. His favourite classic car is his car and his favourite car ever made is the Bugatti because it is the combination of performance, technology and the name but unfortunately like most of us he can’t afford one yet. I asked him to describe certain car. We started with the Camaro 1969 SS, Sami said this is a car that he wants to buy and become part of his collection. Mustang Gt500 Shelby 1967 this is the car that he would give up everything to buy. McLaren P1 he has some footage on his Instagram and people thought it was his car but he said it is a car for small people and he does not fit inside. 1960 Mercedes SL300 is for old men and is not his type at all. Porsche 918 Spyder: he says that whatever starts with Porsche is always expensive. Ferrari La Ferrari: whatever model it is a Ferrari and people will give you a space. Toyota Prius: if you want to have a problem on the roads drive this car. Ford F150 when it comes to a truck this is the one that rules the street and is good on all terrains and also good on mountains as well. This car is tough. A bit like someone else I could mention……. Dodge Ram is a car he has a lot of respect for it because when it starts it is a very tough truck but later it’s a NO NO.

59

COVERSTORY

I asked him to describe his favourite driving scenario, what would the car be and who would he be with and where would he be driving? He told me it was when he was in Miami on the South Beach driving his truck with the song Lady by Kenny Rogers and his lady his wife Elvira next to him. Picturing the beautiful sunset and the song that means so much to him because the lyrics speak a lot about his wife. He told me that he cannot remember a better time or a better companion to share that drive with than his wife. I asked if he had any advice to our readers and he gave some amazingly inspirational words to us. He told me that you must give 110% in everything that you do and you must never give up. Life is full of obstacles ups and downs and that’s what life is like but the sign of a real man is that he gets up from those downs and comes back stronger. He doesn’t let them be put off by anything but continues the fight and continues to be hungry and improve. If you get a chance you have to grab it with both hands. God will help you but you have to be loyal and dedicate yourself to being the best that you can. If you do this then you will become a great success. Such inspirational words from my favourite interviewee ever. A real positive and inspirational person.

SAFETY

Parking Safety Tips The time when many people feel most vulnerable is when they are either leaving or returning to a parked car – particularly at night. Always remove the car keys and lock your car. Never leave items (i.e. electronic devices such as GPS units, lap-top computers, personal listening devices; personal bags such as purses, gym bags etc.; or any money including change) visible in the car, put them where they cannot be seen - and make sure they do not have your name or address on them. Never leave credit cards in the car. Choose your parking spot carefully. Always park in well lit areas, as close as possible to your destination, the stairs or elevator. Avoid parking on garage levels that are empty or rarely used If you do not know the parking lot well and are worried about its safety, drive right through to see if everything appears normal before you park. If it does not feel right, trust your instincts. Either leave and find somewhere else to park, or drive around until someone you know drives in; then park near them, and leave the lot or garage with them. When parking, back your vehicle into the parking stall, so that you are facing “out” whenever you enter or exit your vehicle. This tactic both increases your visibility of the surrounding area and also allows you to drive away more quickly if you are being approached by a stranger. Before you leave the car, look around carefully. When you do leave the car, walk briskly and confidently to the exit or elevator.

Do not be distracted. If you are worried about becoming a target, vary your routine. Park in different spots, at different times. Avoid a predictable schedule. If you are driving and parking alone, join a car pool, rideshare or have someone meet you. If, on the way to your car, you see that another vehicle has been broken into, call the police right away - do not go to your own car. Tell the police where you are and remain in that location until they arrive. If you are nervous when returning to your parked car, ask someone you know and trust to accompany you.

When you are returning to your car, have your keys in your hand – avoid fumbling through your pockets, purse or briefcase in the middle of a deserted lot. Before getting into your car, check inside carefully – especially the back seat. Once inside, lock the doors immediately, and make sure that your purse, briefcase or other valuables are out of sight. Know your nearest safe exit route. Report intruders to the Parking Office or to Campus Police. You can report the following to the Parking Office or Campus Police: abandoned vehicles or excess trash; broken or burned out lights; broken doors or broken locks; and, missing or damaged signs.

EXPERT TALK

ask the lube guru How motor oil works? Motor oil works by forming a thin oil film between rubbing surfaces to reduce friction. Aside from reducing friction, it also does other functions like cool, clean, protect and transmit power.

than mineral oils in engine oil application. How to do an oil change? In this part of the globe Do It Yourself thing is not common. The car owner brings his car to a change oil workshop and let the technician do the job. The technician normally decides what engine oil to put based on his knowledge; which is very risky as incorrect oil might be use other than what is recommended in the vehicle’s maintenance manual.

Cool: The lubricant transfers the intense temperatures, including that of combustion, and allows them to be dissipated. Clean Engine oil retains combustion accumulations, such as acid and soot, in suspension, thus keeping the engine clean internally, which is why oil changes from a golden hue to black. Many years ago, when oil development was in its infancy, these deposits would build up within an engine, calling for it to be dismantled for ‘de-coking’ purposes. Protect: The many moving parts within an engine have to be protected from rust, meaning that acids require neutralizing and moisture has to be kept away from the vulnerable areas. Transmit power – Certain engines use the pressurized oil supply to operate specific functions, such as hydraulic tappets or the camshaft chain tensioner.

What is oil change? This the process of replacing the engine oil after a predetermined mileage or time has been reached. For example a car manufacturer would recommend changing the oil every 5,000 Km or five months whichever comes first. What is synthetic oil? Synthetic oil is made from synthetic base oils which are normally in Group III and Group VI as define in the API (American Petroleum Institute) Base Stock Categories. It has higher degree uniformity in terms of the molecule types making the fluid very stable even at high temperature as compared to the conventional mineral oil. That’s why synthetic oils perform exceedingly better

It is advised that the car owner must take time to navigate and read the vehicle maintenance manual to find out the correct engine oil and other fluids; gear oils, steering fluid, automatic transmission fluid, brake fluid and engine coolant. If you want to Do It Yourself, then you may need some basic tools like: New engine oil, new oil Filter, Oil Filter Wrench, Wrench for Oil Drain Bolt, Oil Drain Pan, Clean-Up Supplies for spilt oil. Follow the instruction on the owner’s manual. How to check the quality of an engine oil? While we can readily see the color and clarity of our engine oils by pouring a portion of the oil in a clear glass jar and looking closely into it, there are still other properties that we can’t see and can only be determined in an oil laboratory. These laboratories conduct the tests using standard methods like ASTM, IP, ISO, to determine the chemical and physical properties of the oil which is the metric of the engine oil quality based on Society of Automotive Engineers, American Petroleum Institute and other recognized industry institutions. How to top up your oil? Topping engine oil to your engine must be every driver’s responsibility. Few simple steps must be done. Pull the dip stick and check oil level, if filling is required remove the oil filler cap, usually located on top of the engine. Over-filling is bad for the engine, you should add oil a little at a time. Start by adding about 250ml. Using a funnel helps avoid spills. Allow oil to settle, about 2 minutes or so and check the dipstick again. If the level is still below or near the minimum mark, add more oil until level is Full. Unless your engine is leaking or burning oil (or if you haven’t checked it

68

in a while) you will rarely need to add more than a liter. However, if more oil is needed, add slowly, checking level until full. Screw the oil filler cap back on securely, and you’re done. How to choose the right lubricant? The right lubricant to use in your engine can be found in the vehicle’s manual as recommended by the car manufacturer. How to correctly dispose of motor oil? As you can always read in the oil bottles or cans to dispose your used engine oils according to your local regulation. Never put it into the soil or storm drains. Best way is to give it to used oil recycling stations. Does motor oil have shelf life? Best industry practice suggests that as long as the engine oil is stored in tightly sealed original container, placed in cool and dry storage, shelf life could go up to five years. It is prudent to check the appearance of the fluid for any separation or precipitation; it must appear as bright and clear before using. What are various oil grades? Before I describe the various grades of engine oils let my give a brief background how they are graded. The SAE viscosity grades constitute a classification for engine lubricating oils in rheological terms only and are intended for use by engine manufacturers in determining the engine oil viscosity grades to be recommended for use in their engines and by oil marketers in formulating and labeling their products. Two series of viscosity grades are defined in SAE J300: (a) Multigrade -those that contain the letter W Example : SAE 5W-30, 5W40, 15W-40, 20W-50 W is defined by maximum low-temperature cranking and pumping viscosities and a minimum kinematic viscosity at 100°C. (b) Monograde - those that do not contain the letter W. Example : SAE 30, 40, 50 Mono grades without the letter W are based on a set of minimum and maximum kinematic viscosities at 100°C and a minimum high-temperature/ high-shear measured at 150°C.

The future of working: Nissan e-NV200 WORKSPACe is the world’s first all-electric mobile office such a premium and the modern professional needing to be ever more mobile, businesses will need to think smart and consider what the workplace of the future looks like,” he added. “With hot-desking and remote working on the rise, it is not too big a leap to see a future where our vehicles will become connected, energy efficient, mobile workspaces and the e-NV200 WORKSPACe project could become more than just a concept.” The e-NV200 WORKSPACe can be rapid charged from empty to 80 percent power in just 30 minutes, and for those times when you want to leave the office parked and charging up, there’s an internal mount for a folding Brompton Bike, allowing users to make short trips around the city or complete the ‘last mile’ of any journey. Nissan has collaborated with UK-based design workshop Studio Hardie to transform its zero emission e-NV200 van into the world’s first all-electric mobile office – the e-NV200 WORKSPACe. This professional office environment on wheels features an integrated fold-out desk, touchscreen computer, wireless internet, smartphone-controlled LED lights, wireless phone charging, Bluetooth® audio system, mini fridge and barista-quality coffee machine. The e-NV200 WORKSPACe concept not only highlights the customisable potential of its electric van, it paints a picture of what desk-based employment could look like in the future as hot-desking and flexible working grows in popularity across the globe. Moreover, the one-off vehicle also provides an example of Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility vision, and the company’s view of how the relationship between vehicles and people are changing. During 20151, the number of co-working and hot-desking spaces worldwide increased by 36 percent as small businesses and working professionals looked for increased mobility and a more cost-effective alternative to traditional city-centre office space. With electric vehicles costing as little as €0.03 per kilometre4 to run, the e-NV200 WORKSPACe offers a cost-effective desk space solution allowing users to work for free in some city-centres that offer free EV charging bays, or escape the city altogether for the countryside or coastal fresh air.

Gareth Dunsmore, Director of Electric Vehicles, Nissan Europe said: “The Nissan e-NV200 is already a smart, sustainable transport solution for forward-thinking businesses, making it the ideal vehicle to be used as the basis for a mobile work place. The e-NV200 WORKSPACe takes the ingenuity of our 100 percent electric van a step further and by enlisting the design expertise of Studio Hardie - renowned for its creative eco approach - the e-NV200 has been reimagined as an innovative, zeroemission working environment. “With property prices in our capital cities at

William Hardie, celebrated UK-based designer and founder of Studio Hardie, said: “We specialise in creating amazing spaces in unexpected places, but we’ve never done anything in an electric vehicle before. “Given the van’s green credentials we wanted to maximise the space with smart and considered features such as sustainably sourced materials and efficiently-powered technology. We believe the future of technology is a return to quality craftsmanship, so we’ve also looked to hone an environment that professionals will really enjoy working in. All the comfort and connectivity of a modern office, with a few surprising touches thrown in!”

gazman parking Whilst driving to Bahrain City Centre the other night to watch the awful Fantastic Beasts, the joys of having kids…… it was the usual attempt at trying to squeeze my SUV into a space that hadn’t been parked over the lines or which we might be able to open the doors without the need to be a circus contortionist to get out of the car. Yes this month’s column is on the joys of parking. Firstly, those white lines are not a guide just to help you drive over them they are where you are supposed to fit your car inside. Is it that difficult……. If one person parks badly then another 20 or 30 cars are also in danger as they also have to park over the lines. Meaning there will be at least one or more spaces that will not fit a car in. This can be very frustrating at busy times and can lead to confrontations. It is not just drivers that are to blame.

Cars like people are getting fatter and bigger. Many years ago car spaces fit cars beautifully and there were no problems like we see today especially at the weekends when our friends from over the causeway decide to bring their Land Cruisers on mass and just dump them anywhere they want. Over the past 15 years cars have increased 16% in size so it is no surprise that older car parks just can’t handle the size of our bigger cars and of course our obsession with SUVs. Now this is where we come and in and it is a simple thing. Think about where you park and if it gives your neighbouring car enough room to be able to get out. I have on numerous times had to ask my 11 year old son to reverse my car out as I am not 17kg and cannot fit through a gap that you would struggle to get a credit card through. How can people park a car this close to someone else’s car and

not see the problems that this will cause. My son loves it now and has become an expert in reversing cars out. I have also returned to my car and seen scratches on the door where someone has parked to near and instead of looking for another parking spot has just decided to open his door onto mine. It kills me that people can be so unkind. My car is my pride and joy and to return to scratches on the door because someone is too lazy to park a car properly makes me angry. I have seen people fight over car parking spaces and you very rarely see anyone that parks badly wait behind and say sorry. I mean most cars are now fitted with park assist and a whole range of cameras so even the worst drivers should be able to park adequately. Parking related accidents account for 30% of all accidents on the roads. Think about that the next time you try to squeeze your beast into a tiny gap.
