Kanoo Motors S.P.C., a leading high-end automotive retailer, officially inaugurated its McLaren Bahrain showroom next to the exclusive Moda Mall, at the Bahrain World Trade Centre. The prestigious event was opened by McLaren Middle East Managing Director, Andreas Bareis, Kanoo Motors Chief Operating Officer, Stefan Moench and Head of McLaren Bahrain, Trevor Fletcher. Present were Kanoo Motors executives and members of the Press. The opening follows the recent appointment of Kanoo Motors as the official distributor of McLaren Automotive in Bahrain, which was announced by McLaren Automotive Chief Executive Officer, Mike Flewitt and Kanoo Motors Directors, Ebrahim M. Kanoo and Talal F. Kanoo during an official ceremony held at the Bahrain International Circuit. “We are proud and excited to be ushering in a new era for this supercar giant in the Kingdom,” said Ebrahim M. Kanoo. “McLaren is a brand that has captivated sports and supercar enthusiasts around the world. Despite its 50 year heritage in Formula 1TM and racing disciplines, McLaren as an automotive manufacturer is relatively young with only five years as a full challenger to the market. In this short time, it has established a strong and loyal fan base of sports and supercars here in Bahrain and in neighbouring GCC countries.” He added: “McLaren owners also deserve service facilities that match the supremely high performance of their cars. We reaffirm

6

our commitment to providing a superior after sales service that offers our clients the level of quality they expect from the McLaren brand. Added to this, McLaren confidence is further strengthened with its unique offering of a standard 3 year/100 000km warranty which is also extendable to 10 years.” The public can now view the range of luxury handcrafted Super and Sports Series cars from McLaren at the showroom, while aftersales care is available at a newly created facility located in Tubli, with technicians already fully trained by McLaren to ensure the highest standards of aftercare. The range of vehicles available from McLaren Bahrain includes the Sports Series and Super Series models. The

groundbreaking McLaren 650S and 675LT Spider derivatives incorporate a range of Formula 1TM technologies, such as the carbon fibre MonoCell, active aerodynamics and the state-of-the-art ProActive Chassis Control, providing the ultimate control on both road and track. The McLaren range completes with the more attainable and multi award-winning Sports Series, conceived to introduce McLaren DNA and performance credentials to the sports car segment. With a roadbiased nature, yet still honing race derived technologies to offer supercar levels of performance, the new Sports Series provides enhanced all round usability and promises an exhilarating and fun driving experience.

THE HOUSE OF ROLLS-ROYCE PREMIERES - THE FIRST IN A SERIES OF FASCINATING FILMS - ‘THE SPIRIT OF ECSTASY’

The House of Rolls-Royce premieres the first in a series of fascinating short films today, telling how it became the world’s leading and most respected luxury house. “The Spirit of Ecstasy” film will premiere at www.rolls-roycemotorcars. com.

Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Our world-wide search for the perfect voice of the Spirit of Ecstasy led us back to West Sussex, England, where both Kate Winslet and Rolls-Royce, two British icons reside. Kate Winslet brings her great talent to this role.”

Kate Winslet, the Academy Award winning actress, will give voice to the Spirit of Ecstasy in this first film for the House of Rolls-Royce as she retells luxury’s most fascinating and enduring story. The British actress will recount the story of the muse that guides the world’s most celebrated luxury house.

The Premiere: Episode 1 - “The Spirit of Ecstasy”

The premiere signals the beginning of a year of celebrations for the House of Rolls-Royce as it prepares, once again, to reset the standard by which all other luxury goods are judged with the arrival of the New Rolls-Royce Phantom later in the year. This landmark moment will also herald the beginning of the second chapter of the remarkable story of RollsRoyce since its renaissance began in 2003 at the marque’s centre of luxury excellence in Goodwood, West Sussex. “The Spirit of Ecstasy has stood on the prow of every Rolls-Royce since 1911, representing “the best” of everything, whilst silently guiding through life those exceptional people who have made our world turn. This is a story that inspires greatness and needs to be told,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive

16

The first episode of The House of RollsRoyce series, “The Spirit of Ecstasy”, retells the story of the muse that has guided and inspired the world’s most celebrated luxury house for the past 105 years. Since her creation in 1911, the Spirit of Ecstasy, modelled by sculptor and artist Charles Sykes, has silently guided every Rolls-Royce and its prestigious owner through momentous events in their lives

and the lives of others. She has stood as an elegant presence and witness at some of history’s most notable events. This first episode uses cutting edge motion capture and 3D scanning techniques to bring back to life one of the most fascinating legends in the mythology of Rolls-Royce – how and why the Spirit of Ecstasy, which is the most recognised luxury icon in the world, came to be. Our story begins in the milieu of Belle Époque London, where artists and inventors, scientists and engineers, aristocrats and bohemians collaborate and compete in the white heat of early 20th Century creativity. Fittingly, this time very much echoes the path of today’s Rolls-Royce patrons, visionary men and women who take risks and boldly innovate to achieve their success.

Team Zain aims to put big smiles on crew faces in 2017 EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour

When Kuwait-based Team Zain first contested EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour in 2015, the focus was on team building but increasingly, their preparations are geared to achieving a good result.

seeing a big smile on their faces at the end because that means our campaign has been a success,” said Pouligny who as Zain’s sole helm might have his work cut out during the two-week long race.

So, in 2017 the team, unchanged from last year with French skipper Cedric Pouligny and navigator Gerald Veniard back in control, will travel to Muscat early ahead of the start and devote as much time as possible to setting their boat up for the best possible performance.

“We have a great team spirit on Team Zain – they are supermotivated and keen to learn. It might not be any easier this year but I know the guys will be really keen to go for it and will not be put off by any of the challenges.”

“The Zain crew were novices when we first competed but now we have some good competitive sailors so we will want to do better than last year but for me, what I’m looking forward to most is

Pouligny’s crew is drawn from Zain’s 5,000 strong workforce in eight Middle Eastern and African countries who back in 2015 responded to a company questionnaire asking for interest in taking part in EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour.

They earned their selection following weeks of intensive training. In their first year, according to Mike Miller, team manager and member of Zain Group’s Finance team, they exceeded expectations by finishing on the podium because the boat set up was ‘fantastic’ and they had some ‘lucky breaks’ with the breeze in the final two legs. “But last year, we didn’t put enough time into setting up the boat and didn’t have as much luck so a 5th place finish was a creditable one. Plus, there were a couple of extra pro teams and the Omani teams were hugely improved so all in all we were pretty pleased with our result. I’m hoping we will be in the top half of the table in 2017, but the competition gets fiercer each year and we are sailing against some really impressive people.”

Supercars Club Arabia #Scandiera

Founded in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Supercars Club Arabia has become the world’s most exclusive supercars club; because of the exclusive list of cars they accept, SCA has increasingly grown over the past few years with members from the GCC and other parts of the world. They currently organise two tours per year, one takes place early in the year and covers different parts in the GCC and another takes part in the summer in either Europe or America. A unique name is given to each tour they organise depending on the locations they are visiting. Their last tour took place in August 2016 which Started in Stockholm and finished in Monaco, the tour “#Scandiera” also included supercar factories visits to Koenigsegg and Zenvo. They also visited the main Chopard facility in Fleurier being their platinum partner. Chopard is one of the few brands out there that can boast both being independent and having a storied history, but many watch enthusiasts don’t realize that Chopard is producing truly in-house movements to an extremely high level in the hills of Fleurier while also making its own cases and smelting its own gold back in Geneva. There are actually three

facilities across Switzerland that make up the Chopard manufacture family. The most exciting of the trio, Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier. This is the main production facility for the L.U.C family of watches, and it first opened in 1996. Since then, Chopard has grown the manufacture from a pair of watchmakers to a team of over 130 people, but they have decided not to expand the facility further, keeping the production numbers for L.U.C tight and the quality of the work high.

SCA’s next tour “#Delmonya” will be in February 2017 and will start at home and in the home of motorsports in the Middle East (Bahrain International Circuit). The tour will include 3 circuits, driving from Manama to Doha and experience the Losail Circuit before heading to a relaxing night at Qasr Al Sarab then to the Yas Marina Circuit before finishing in Downtown Dubai.

On the top of the manufacture, you’ll find something that few can boast – a museum that covers more than just the history of the single brand. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, co-President of Chopard (with his sister Caroline) is an avid watch collector and established this “L.U.CEUM” to display historic pocket watches and wristwatches that show off a variety of complications, decoration techniques, and popular styles, along with a comprehensive look at the Chopard archive, of course.

WELL-DONE GAC

Al Senan & Mr Najem Al Senan from Majestic Cars Bahrain, Mr. Hasan from Panorama Cars Bahrain and Mr. Bareer Jasim (Brand Manager Tashaleet Automotive Bahrain). We had our formal meet-greet at the Bahrain Airport lounge and boarded the flight. Arriving at China, we were introduced to our minder, a well-dressed exec Mr. Kelvin Wang (Regional Sales Manager, Middle East Intl Business Division) who is in charge our affairs for rest of the days in China. The scheduled factory visit was the very next day so we had one day to rest and cast China. Now that I have travelled to China and visited the GAC factory and their assembly lines, all I could see to it is that the best variant of my experience will be shared for our readers. A visit to China was not keen, as the language was a huge barrier for me, but what surpassed my notions was the reception I received from the countrymen. As a representative of GAZ Magazine, I was invited to visit the GAC Motors factory end-to-end and I felt exclusive. Technology was just another common thing for Chinese people. Tech was everywhere, right from the streets to the multistoried companies. The visit was scheduled for four days and I was accompanied by Mr. Ebrahim

34

Ani Abraham/Gaz Magazine The factory visit was not brief. It all began with welcome refreshments with a short presentation of the corporate video on the manufacturing facilities and products. We were then guided by the tour guides to the assembly lines. We were explained about the highly disciplined process of car-making and how the machine is built from a sheet of metal to the final delivery. We saw the profiling, welding part, paint shop and the final finished product. One of the fancies we had was the opportunity to have a unique dining experience with the key personals of the team at the hospitality suite, with an array of their own exclusive seasonal dishes. The visit had given us an unparalleled

opportunity to experience the whole process as to how the cars are bought to life. The state-of-the-art productions facilities of GAC had showed us how the skilled workers and technicians along with sophisticated machines work in harmony. I was rendered speechless while watching the process and felt that the catchword for them was “flawlessness. Not only we had a chance to visit the extravagance of the Chinese autoindustry, but our minder never drew a blank to take us to the extreme technostreets of china. The streets were active, and I presume it was just a tip of the iceberg. We had our own personal shopping. Leaving behind China was desirous. I could real feel that they strive for nothing but perfection.

Audi to me conjures up great images. I can’t think of an Audi which I do not like. They

have been at the forefront of affordable

classy cars for a long time and often feature in my top 3 cars. They are reliable and are

extremely enjoyable to drive. So it was with a mixture of excitement that I went to test drive the Audi S3. It is now 20 years since the A3

hit the market and the new version is a nod to this heritage. Hopefully it was going to be more Audi RS3 and less Seat Leon.

At first looks it is unmistakable an Audi and it doesn’t feel or look particularly small like some hot hatches but this is the new S3 and

it’s not a hatch it is a sedan. It’s like a big brother of the hot hatch that although he is

mature on the outside on this inside hides a very fun and outgoing mind. The engine is a 2 litre TFSi turbocharged 4 cylinder engine

and it can bash out 290 bhp. On the speed test we managed to take it from 0-100km/ ph in 5 seconds flat which is fast and the top speed that I reached was a fairly rapid 250 km/ph on the track…….. of course.

Inside it has those touches of elegance and class that you have come to expect from

Audi. You can even get a seat that mas-

38

sages you and won’t ask you for extras. It

is all good. With technology moving so fast

it is just as important that manufacturers respond to this and of course Audi have. I’ve

always been a fan of Audi’s sat nav system

as it is so user friendly. This has continued

and with the added usb port that actually works unlike certain models this car is on it.

The 7 inch screen is more than adequate for the job in hand.

It drives very well but I guess it’s not the exciting hot hatch of old. It is far more refined

and this can be felt mostly in the drive. It, like every Audi, drives perfectly and the car is

very responsive. It has lost a bit of the craziness but in its place is a more elegant feel.

You can’t really knock this car. I can’t imag-

ine a car I would prefer to drive to work for example. Yes there are flashier and bigger

cars but in this class it is peerless. It ticks a lot of boxes. It might not be the best at certain things but it is consistent.

I loved driving this car, yes it is not a hot hatch as such but are you the type of person

that whines because you want a big boot on a Ferrari. I mean if you want a thrilling ride go for the RS3 but if you want a bit more sophistication and class go for this beauty.

TEST DRIVE

I once bought a Nissan Patrol so if I spend my money on it; you know it must be a good car. Also, any car that is good enough for the police must be good enough for the likes of me and you. There is no point in the police having a car that can be beaten on or off road or they will look as foolish as the police on GTA. If was with some excitement and like meeting an old friend that I took the latest Patrol offering, the V6 Platinum out for a ride. Nissan has decided to release a newer version of the Patrol and make it more accessible which means affordable to me and you. The patrol looks exactly the same and is just as impressive as always. It is a beast of a motor and looks angry. It has been specifically designed for the Gulf and it looks amazing. Inside it is huge and there is so much room even in the third row. I am a big lad and I sat in all the rows and there was enough space for me. This is definitely a key feature of the Patrol but also and one of the reasons why I bought a patrol was because of the safety. At Gaz we love nothing more than a safe ride and the patrol is one of the safest rides on the roads. If you do have an accident in the Patrol you are more than likely to walk away from it unharmed. If like me you have a family this is hugely important. It also delivers the best power of any V6 on the roads. I took it off road at the GAZ off road track and it tamed it with ease. It is just as impressive on or off road. This is perfect for Bahrain. The engine is 4 litres and it kicks out 275 bhp. It certainly is very powerful. The technology has seen a facelift. I partic-

42

ularly enjoyed the 13 speaker Bose sound system which sounded pitch perfect. There is an off road monitor that tells you what is happening out there and is particularly good at night and can tell you all the real time information about angles and tyre pressure. Perfect for car geeks like me. The Patrol is a beast but it is a beautiful, powerful and enjoyable beast. I have to say I still prefer the V8 but if you are on a budget and I know lots of us are, this is a fantastic SUV. I like how Nissan think about the Gulf when designing SUVs and in my opinion there is nothing that can really compare which the Patrol out there. Nissan knows the market and knows what we like. Yet again they have delivered.

Having conquered the small car category, the latest generation of the John Cooper Works model family now takes the premium compact segment by storm, too. In terms of its exterior dimensions and space, the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman is the biggest top athlete in the history of the British brand to date. The bonus in terms of roominess, everyday practicality and longdistance suitability offers a new range of opportunities to enjoy racing passion. The fact that the extremely sporty temperament typical of the John Cooper Works models reaches a whole new dimension in this model is due to the fact that the most powerful engine ever fitted in a MINI is combined with the latest version of the all-wheel drive system ALL4 for the first time. In the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman (combined fuel consumption: 7.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 168

g/km), the drive torque generated from a peak output of 170 kW/231 hp and a maximum torque of 350 Newton metres is distributed as needed between the front and rear wheels in every situation on the road. The standard all-wheel drive system forms part of a precisely assembled overall package comprising not just the powerful 4-cylinder turbo engine, the sports suspension complete with 18-inch John Cooper Works light alloy wheels, the Brembo sports brake system and distinctive body features for optimised aerodynamic properties and cooling air intake but also a model-specific cockpit with John Cooper Works sports seats. This guarantees enthralling performance when accelerating from zero to 100 km/h, for instance, which takes 6.3 seconds with both the standard 6-speed

manual transmission and the optional 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, accompanied by the powerfully emotional sound of the sports exhaust system. Power transmission to all four wheels increases agility on spontaneous sprint manoeuvres as well as when taking bends in dynamic style, ensuring supreme forward thrust even beyond the asphalt. In addition to its outstanding sprint capacity, it is the fascinatingly precise handling of the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman in sporty situations and its exceptional deceleration figures that characterise the car as a remarkable athlete. The extremely sporty and at the same time versatile driving properties of the new John Cooper Works Clubman offer a varied range of potential uses that result from the distinctive body concept. Its appearance is distinctive even when stationary, not least due to the four side doors and the hallmark split doors at the rear, as well as five fullyfledged seats and a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 360 litres to as much as 1 250 litres by folding down the rear backrest. The car’s modern interpretation of the tradition-steeped shooting brake concept – giving it a top standing within the brand model range in the area of functionality – is combined with a challenging sporty aura. Additional preferences in the areas of driving fun, comfort and individuality can be catered to with options drawn from the program of special equipment features available for the new MINI Clubman. These enable the exterior and interior of the car to be precisely geared to the owner’s personal style based on a wide selection of exterior paint finishes, seat upholstery options and interior surfaces. The features exclusively available for John Cooper Works models include the body finish in the variant Rebel Green, the red contrasting paint finish for the roof and the exterior mirror caps and sport stripes in the colours red and black.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan therefore has all the tools it needs to continue the remarkable success recorded by its predecessors; around 7.9 million BMW 5 Series cars were sold across its first six generations. “The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series points the way into the future, as we have defined it with our NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy. We see technological leadership, emotionally rich products and digitalisation as essential factors in achieving success. With the expansion of our model portfolio in the large-vehicle classes, we are satisfying the wishes of many customers. I’m in no doubt that the new BMW 5 Series will set new benchmarks technologically, but also have huge emotional appeal. It remains the epitome of the business sedan,” says Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG. Superior driving pleasure and unsurpassed aerodynamics. Rigorous application of the BMW EfficientLightweight lightweight design

50

concept, with increased use of aluminum and high-strength steels, reduces the weight of the 5 Series Sedan by up to 100 kilograms from that of its predecessor. The newly designed chassis, a low centre of gravity, BMW’s hallmark even weight distribution and a lightweight body offering exceptional torsional stiffness combine a wonderfully dynamic driving experience with the longdistance comfort for which the BMW 5 Series is renowned. Various chassis options such as Integral Active Steering, which can now be teamed with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, add further talents to a dynamicsfocused overall package designed to ensure

the BMW 5 Series once again stands at the top of its class. The drag coefficient of the new, 4,935 millimetre-long BMW 5 Series Sedan (Cd = 0.22 at its most efficient) sets the benchmark in its class. The next step to automated driving. A wealth of assistance systems are on hand in the new BMW 5 Series to offer the driver unbeatable support – not only at critical moments but also in less demanding situations at the wheel, such as traffic jams, slow-moving traffic, and monotonous stretches of motorway. To this end, it is fitted as standard with a stereo camera, which

teams up with optional radar and ultrasound sensors to monitor the area around the car. New features in the BMW 5 Series alongside the evasion aid and Crossing traffic warning are the Lane Change Assistant and Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection. The latter keeps an eye on the lane markings and the area around the car, and actively helps the driver to avoid looming collisions by applying corrective steering inputs. The BMW 5 Series also takes another step towards automated driving with extended functions for the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system and Steering and lane control assistant. These include adoption of speed restrictions, which drivers can select as part of the Speed Limit Assist option. Drivers can confirm adoption of a speed restriction and make an adjustment of +/– 15 km/h / 9 mph in the system settings. From rest to 210 km/h (130 mph) the car assists the driver with distance-keeping, accelerating, braking and lane control. This increases comfort significantly – in particular at low speeds and in slow-moving traffic on clogged up motorway sections. The intelligent Auto Start Stop function now adjusts its responses to the route and traffic conditions and therefore offers even greater driving comfort. Intuitive usability and extensive comfort. With even greater user-friendliness as its goal, the new BMW 5 Series is equipped with the latest-generation iDrive system. In top specification, it displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen. The system can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls directly, as the driver wishes. The large, tile-style panels can be arranged as desired and show the content of the underlying menus in constantly updated form. The latest-generation full-colour BMW Head-Up Display has a projection surface that is 70 per cent larger than before and displays traffic signs, telephone listings, radio stations, music tracks, navigation instructions and warnings from the assistance systems. Maximising the levels of on-board comfort are extended storage options, greater legroom for rear-seat passengers and comfort seats with massage function, not to mention innovative seat operation using touch sensors and four-zone climate control complete with ionisation and discreet air fragrancing. Special Synergy Thermoacoustic Capsule (SYNTAK) engine encapsulation technology, the acoustic glazing for the windscreen and the acoustic headliner bring about another noticeable

reduction in noise levels inside the car. All headlight variants specified for the BMW 5 Series Sedan come as standard with LED technology. Available as an option are Adaptive LED Headlights with variable light distribution including adaptive roundabout lights and BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle high beam with a range of up to 500 metres. BMW 530i and BMW 540i: the new petrol engines. All the engines in the 5 Series Sedan lineup belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology imbues all the members of the family with outstanding performance combined with exceptional efficiency. Two diesel engines and two petrol variants will be available from launch, working in tandem with either rearwheel drive or BMW xDrive intelligent allwheel drive.

The new two-litre four-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW 530i develops peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) and maximum output of 185 kW/252 hp. Its fuel consumption in the combined cycle comes in at 5.4 litres/100 km (52.3 mpg imp)*, which means CO2 emissions of 126 g/km – down more than 11 per cent on its predecessor’s figures. The BMW 530i accelerates from 0 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). The flagship engine at launch will be the 250 kW/340 hp unit under the bonnet of the new BMW 540i. This three-litre straightsix produces torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). Despite its extra output and sharper dynamic edge, average fuel consumption stands at only 6.5 l/100 km (43.5 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are kept to just 150 g/km*. In xDrive guise, the BMW 540i powers from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 4.8 seconds.

Renault promise groundbreaking 2017 engine Renault is working on a completely new engine concept for 2017 after feeling that the power unit it had used up to now had reached its development ceiling. The new engine is being designed at the company’s Viry-Chatillon headquarters but its chiefs are adamant that its focus for the start of the campaign is on reliability rather than out-and-out performance. It means the phase one engine that will be used for the Australian Grand Prix will not show the power units full potential, as that will have to wait until the second power units are used around the time of the Spanish Grand Prix. Renault F1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul said that opting for an all-new concept was essential if his company was to target world title glory in the next few years – but short-term compromises would be necessary for it to not hurt its finishing rate. In an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com, Abiteboul revealed that Renault’s plan included the use of technology not seen in F1 before, but such bold concepts would not be ready for the start of the 2017 season.

McLaren ‘would’ve won races with top engine’ McLaren would have won races in 2016 if it had the best Formula 1 engine, according to its racing director Eric Boullier. The Woking-based team has not won since the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, a run of 78 races - the longest in its history. Its Honda power unit was off the pace in the manufacturer’s first year back in F1 in 2015, but the Japanese firm made strides during its second season. “If we had the best engine this year, we would have won races,” Boullier told Autosport. “We know, the GPS traces [of corner speeds] tell us.” Boullier says improvements need to be made in tandem on the engine and chassis in order for McLaren to keep moving up the grid. “There is room for improvement everywhere with Honda,” he said. “It also drives your chassis development. Everything is connected. “You can’t make a car too draggy if you don’t have enough power deployment because you lose time. “You have to balance all the time. We work as one team with Honda to achieve what we want.” Boullier believes Honda has made progress and reduced the deficit to its rivals but conceded it will take time to catch up completely. “The gap has closed,” he said. “But to get where Mercedes is, you can’t just copy and paste. “There is a way you have to go through. “You can’t do it in three months or six months but in a few years.

54

FIA ‘should equalise engines if Mercedes aren’t caught’ Toro Rosso boss Franz Tost believes that Mercedes’ dominance in the past three seasons stems more from its power unit than anything else. Indeed, the German outfit superbly negotiated the turn which ushered in the 1.6 litre V6 hybrid era, with its an engineering in the field clearly a step ahead of its rivals. While Tost echoed the majority of F1’s voices in hoping that next year’s regulation change would upset the order at the front, he isn’t a big believer in Mercedes’ demise in 2017. “If you want to make the show better, first we must equalise the engines,” said the Austrian. “If in 2017 Mercedes still has the edge, then the FIA must freeze the engines to allow the others to catch up the gap. “Right now we have a championship of engines, because at the wheel of a Mercedes, Alonso and Vettel would have become champions too.” Tost was nevertheless hopeful of the Silver Arrows at least being challenged more often. “I’m hoping Red Bull and Ferrari can make progress,” he insisted. “Viewers want to see different winners, as well as accidents without serious consequences. I constantly hear from my friends ‘Accidents don’t even happen at the starts anymore’. “And we need to get rid of the penalties,”

Mercedes crush the competition but lose their champion

To their credit, Mercedes appreciate that the manner in which they have dominated the past three seasons of Formula One has not been good for the sport. They sustained and even raised their level yet further in 2016. The silver team set new record for the most victories and pole positions in a season, achieving both before the final round of the longest-ever 2016 season. They have won 51 of the 59 races since the V6

hybrid turbo regulations were introduced at the beginning of 2014. It was widely expected by many, including Toto Wolff, that as the current engine regulations matured the team would find itself under greater pressure from its rivals. But if Mercedes truly are finding diminishing returns from the current regulations the others are doing a poor job of exploiting it. Their performance advantage this year was comparable to what it had been in

the previous two seasons. Expecting this, Bernie Ecclestone tried and failed to cook up a new qualifying format to trip them up. A change in aerodynamic regulations will bring new challenges, but not until next year. Mercedes had the constructors’ championship wrapped up early enough to be able to turn their vast resources to addressing the 2017 rules package in good time.

TOYOTA GAZOO RACING HAS CONFIRMED THAT JARI-MATTI LATVALA WILL LEAD ITS DRIVER LINE UP FOR THE UPCOMING WRC SEASON AFTER THE TEAM OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED ITS 2017 PROGRAMME IN HELSINKI THIS AFTERNOON. Mäkinen, has also announced that newlycrowned WRC 2 champion, Esapekka Lappi, has joined its ranks as test driver. This afternoon’s official launch brings an end to months of speculation about which drivers will get the chance to lead the Japanese manufacturer’s assault on the WRC as it returns to competition action after a 17-year absence. Latvala is pleased to secure his WRC future and is excited about the new challenge that lies ahead. “I started my rally career in a Toyota Corolla GT back in 2001 and my first competitive outing in a World Rally Car was behind the wheel of a Corolla WRC in 2003,” the 16-time WRC rally winner said. “In many ways it feels like I’m coming home. Lorenzo: It’s a golden era for MotoGP “We went through difficult times, when there were only 17 bikes on the grid” - Jorge Lorenzo.

“It’s a golden era,” said Lorenzo, speaking exclusively to Crash.net. “We went through difficult times, when there were only 17 bikes on the grid just three or four years ago. “But now there are 23 bikes, probably 18 with the capacity to win races. We saw this year there were nine different winners. Next year, three factories have MotoGP champions as riders. So this is very interesting for the spectators.” Lorenzo has left Yamaha for Ducati, to try and hand the Italian factory its first MotoGP title since 2007.

Triple premier-class champion Jorge Lorenzo believes MotoGP is enjoying a ‘golden era’ after emerging from some dark years in terms of manufacturer support. Just three brands officially competed in MotoGP from 2012-2014 - reaching a low of eleven factory/satellite bikes - forcing cheaper CRT/Open class machines to prop-up the grid.

Such rules are no longer needed, with this year’s switch to a single ECU system widely credited with helping attract six factories - Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, Suzuki, Aprilia and KTM - for the 2017 season. And they are not just making up the numbers; a record nine riders representing four manufacturers and six different teams - celebrated at least one victory this season.

Yamaha can still count on nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi and if early testing is anything to go by Lorenzo’s replacement Maverick Vinales is also set to be a title contender. Honda is the only factory to have retained both its riders, reigning champion Marc Marquez and team-mate Dani Pedrosa expecting a more refined RCV package, while Suzuki responded to the loss of Vinales by signing another race winner in the form of Andrea Iannone. Aprilia and the new KTM project each have a rider with prior MotoGP podiums to his name.

MotoGP: Le Mans gets quicker in 2017 “I would say that pole position will be between one and two seconds faster a lap”

That’s because the entire Bugatti circuit has recently been resurfaced. In an interview with paddock-gp.com, Martin Goureau, safety officer for the circuit, explained:

“This process began two years ago, when we were approached by the MotoGP riders. They said the surface was lacking grip and especially complained that there were a lot of bumps.

“Some of the asphalt was 10 years old. Repairs had been made to other parts, such as the Dunlop chicane, so there were a lot of joints in the asphalt. “We’ve done a complete resurfacing and now there are only three joints. The reason for three is because the work took three days, which is itself a huge effort, and the new joints were carefully placed in areas where they pose no concern. “Now there are no joints in any braking zones or corners. Before, the worst joint was located at the entrance to the Museum corner. It was after several right turns so sometimes the tyre being more cold on the left side, combined with this small bump, was enough to lose grip, as we saw last year. “We’ve tested the new asphalt in cars and also with the new GSX-R ridden by Damien Saulnier. Even in the wet, the grip is crazy! With RS10 [road tyres] you could take Chapel at 70km/h in the wet, now you can take it at 110km/h.

White and Naemi set new World records but Al Atat takes impressive Pro Mod victory

Gary White and Mahana Naemi set a pair of new World records to highlight a spectacular second round in the 2016/2017 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship-Arabian Pro Series, hosted this past weekend by Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir. Both World records were registered on qualifying night last Thursday during heated competition in the Pro Mod category. White of Bahrain’s E Kanoo Racing Team set a new import World record with their GT86 car. The American star had a pass of 5.753 seconds at 402kph. Naemi of Al Anabi Racing Team from Qatar then broke the World record in a Pro Nitrous car with a 3.668s time at 327.69kph. Despite both achievements, it was Mustafa Al Atat who was the last man standing as the Pro Mod battles came to a close and the dust settled on a thrilling race day on Friday. Al Atat climbed to the top podium step after claiming a huge win over Lizzy Musi in the Pro Mod category’s final run. Just over a halfsecond separated the Al Anabi teammates. Al Atat sealed the victory in 3.730 seconds with a speed of 320.44kph, while Lizzy had a pass of 4.240s at 206.91kph. Saudi drivers secure double podium in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East Season 8 at Dubai Autodrome hard. I just tried to keep my car in good shape and finish in the best position possible. I am looking forward to the next race here in January as I have the Dubai 24 hours race here before that which allows me to get plenty of track time and hopefully should mean I am well prepared for round 3.”

Qatar-based driver Charlie Frijns claimed a sweet victory to win the second race of Round 2 of Season 8 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East at the Dubai Autodrome with a near perfect performance. Both drivers from Saudi Arabia enjoyed podium finishes in the second race of the weekend, Bander Alesayi turned a disappointing start to round 2 yesterday around with a win in the silver category. While young protégé Mohammad Al Saud experienced his first podium finish of the championship, finishing third in the new Porsche GCC Rookie category. Speaking after race 2 of round 2 at Dubai Autodrome experienced driver Bander Alesayi said: “I had a decent start and I think I managed to climb one position early on. Tom Oliphant overtook me on the third turn, which saw me take 5th place. After a while, the two in front of me were fighting so I took the opportunity and overtook Dylan Pereira, I held that position for a lap and then he managed to take back his position on the 5th corner. I tried to push but couldn’t quite close the gap on the front runners and wanted to concentrate on not making any silly mistakes and finishing the race in 5th place overall. “I am very pleased with the win in my category after yesterday’s result, and I will continue to build on my position in the championship as we move into the New Year.” Mohammad Al Saud said: “I feel amazing after today’s result. My first podium finish of the season and I am pleased considering this is my first time driving on the track. The weather conditions made it quite difficult today, especially as it’s a very technical track when it comes to corners and breaking points. I didn’t get

62

the best of starts, I started 12th on the grid and at one point I dropped down to 14th, I kept pushing and managed to climb a couple of positions but didn’t leave me enough time to gain any more places. “It was a very aggressive race, there was a lot of people locking up their wheels from over driving and pushing the car too

At the front of the grid and after waiting three years to win his first race, Frijns returned to the top step of the podium for the second time in the opening four races of Season 8. The Doha-resident started in race from pole position and dominated from the front of the grid to cross the line and take the chequered flag by the significant margin of 6.137 seconds ahead of Britain’s Tom Oliphant who finished second. Championship contender and winner of the previous day’s race in Dubai, Ryan Cullen of Ireland held onto the final place on the podium in third, managing to keep rival Dylan Pereira of Luxembourg at bay behind. Pereira finished fourth with UAEbased driver Bashar Mardini continuing to improve across his debut season in eighth position.

30 years on: Nissan’s iconic 1987 Paris-Dakar rally car rides again

generated by the Paris-Dakar race. Success came quickly, with victories in the diesel class in three events during 1986 (see results table, below). But the main target was the ParisDakar. It began on 1 January 1987, with 312 vehicles lining up at the start of the gruelling 13,000 km race through Europe, Algeria, Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal. The Nissan Fanta Limon team entered two vehicles; car 211 with Miguel Prieto and Ramon Termens as driver and co-driver respectively, and car 212, crewed by brothers Jorge and Hansi Babler.

• Nissan Patrol Fanta Limon fully restored three decades after race success • Found as a rusting wreck in Spanish museum in 2014 • Rebuilt by Nissan engineers as a ‘passion project’ at weekends and after work • Final chapter an emotional return to North African desert After exactly 30 years away from the public eye, Nissan has brought one of its most iconic motorsport machines back to life. The stunning 1987 Nissan Patrol Fanta Limon Paris-Dakar rally car has been fully restored to its former glory, and made an emotional return to its spiritual home in the sand dunes of the Saharan desert.

Technical Centre (NTCE) in Barcelona, Spain. For more than two years they restored the car after work and at weekends, turning it from a rusting wreck in a Spanish museum to a highly capable off-road racer. Pedro Diaz Illan is Manager of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering team at NTCE, and the only member of the original 1987 team still working there. “That was a proud moment. Our brains, hearts and souls have gone into this project and it has not been easy. But to

Things did not run smoothly. The team’s support truck broke down on the second stage, leaving the pair without spares for the rest of the race. Car 212 was eventually forced to withdraw after rolling down a dune, but 211 battled on to the end. It was the first diesel to finish, in ninth place overall. Mission accomplished, the cars were retired from racing. The whereabouts of 212 is unknown, but 211 was offered to the Salvador Claret, a private car collection and automotive museum south of Girona, Spain. There it remained for almost three decades. The idea for recovering the car came in

The car’s legendary status is second to none, writing its very own chapter in Dakar mythology. The base vehicle was to be the Patrol – Nissan’s popular 4x4 vehicle – with the team at NTCE in Spain leading the project. The sponsorship with Fanta Limon came through links between Nissan Spain and drinks brand Coca-Cola, which was looking to exploit the global publicity

February 2014, when NTCE technicians spotted images of it on an internet forum. Realising the 30th anniversary was less than three years away, they contacted the museum to ask for it back. Juan Villegas, an NTCE technician and part of the restoration team, explained: “The engine was in terrible condition. It was impossible to start and many parts were heavily corroded. The front axle was quite damaged, but the worst thing was the electrics, which had been badly attacked by rats.”

SAFETY

Winter Driving Tips Driving in the winter can be harrowing, especially where blizzard and icy conditions crop up seemingly out of nowhere. But new safety technologies are being added to cars at a record rate. Some can even take control of the vehicle to help us avoid crashes. One such technology that’s particularly useful in winter is traction control. This function helps your vehiclegain traction on snowy, icy or wet surfaces, particularly when accelerating from a stopped or slowed position, or when trying to make it up a slippery hill. Traction control is now standard on most new vehicles. Check the Weather Before You Go. If the weather is frigid, you’re going to want to warm up the car before you drive it. To prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, never leave a vehicle running in an enclosed area, such as a garage. In fact, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that a car running in an attached garage is never safe, even with the garage door open. If the forecast looks iffy, wait out the storm if possible. But if you must travel make sure you share your travel plans and route with someone before you leave. If you become stranded in an unfamiliar area, do not leave your car. Light flares in front and behind the car and make sure the exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow, mud or any object. Prepare Your Car for Winter Besides checking the weather, it’s important to have a mechanic check the condition of the following vehicle systems before heading out on the road: I gnition Brakes Wiring Hoses and fan belts Spark plugs Air, fuel and emissions filters, and PCV valve Distributor Battery Tire wear and air pressure Antifreeze level and freeze line

a skid? Would you know what to do if you ended up sliding toward another vehicle or fixed object? If you don’t want to end up in a crash like the one in Michigan, AAA offers some winter driving tips. Never mix radial tires with other types of tires Avoid using your parking brake to slow or stop Do not use cruise control in wintery conditions Look and steer in the direction you want to go Accelerate and decelerate slowly Increase following distance to 8 to 10 seconds Know whether you have antilock brakes, which will “pump” the brakes for you in a skid If possible, don’t stop when going uphill Keep your gas tank at least half-full If you do get stranded, don’t try to push your vehicle out of snow Signal distress with a brightly colored cloth tied to the antenna or in a rolled up window Don’t Leave Home Without These In an emergency situation, in addition to a

full tank of gas and fresh antifreeze, National Safety Council recommends having these with you at all times: Properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod jack Shovel Jumper cables Tow and tire chains Bag of salt or cat litter for better tire traction or to melt snow Tool kit Flashlight and extra batteries Reflective triangles or flares Compass First aid kit Windshield cleaner Ice scraper and snow brush Matches in a waterproof container Scissors and string or cord Nonperishable, high-energy foods like unsalted, canned nuts, dried fruits and hard candy Blankets, mittens, socks and hats Winter road trips – even short ones – are a great way to celebrate with family and friends. Being prepared can ensure a safe and happy time is had by all.

Know What to Do to Avoid a Crash You’ve done all you can to prepare your car, you’ve checked the weather, but suddenly you find yourself driving in a slippery mess. If visibility is severely limited due to a whiteout, pull off the road and don’t even attempt to drive farther until conditions improve. But sometimes water or ice on the road can surprise drivers, even with little to no precipitation. Do you know how to prevent

Nissan introduces driverless towing system at Oppama Plant

system requires finished vehicles to be transported from the end of the production line to the facility’s dedicated wharf by a team of drivers, at which point they are loaded onto ships. Introducing IVT will allow Nissan to improve production efficiency.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has announced the introduction of Intelligent Vehicle Towing (IVT), a fully automated vehicle towing system, at its Oppama Plant. Nissan has worked on making the relationship between people, cars and society more exciting under its Intelligent Mobility vision, a framework for how cars will be driven, powered, and integrated into society. This new project, which utilizes mapping and communication technologies to link an intelligent and all-electric car to infrastructure, is a step towards the realization of Nissan Intelligent Integration.

is clear. The towing route can easily be altered to accommodate changes in production processes or vehicle transport routes. All driverless towing cars are connected to a central traffic control system, which can monitor the location, driving speed, remaining battery and operational status of each vehicle. When two driverless towing cars meet at an intersection, the control system’s algorithm determines which car should be given right-of-way, and in case of emergency, the system can stop the vehicles remotely.

About the technology The IVT system uses a modified Nissan LEAF to autonomously tow trollies carrying finished vehicles between designated loading and unloading points at the plant. Unlike conventional automatic guided vehicle systems for transporting parts, which often require the installation of rails or extensive use of magnetic tape, this system does not need any special infrastructure to operate. The towing car is equipped with an array of cameras and laser scanners that detect lane markings, curbs and potential obstacles or hazards around the vehicle. By cross-referencing this information with map data, the towing car calculates its own location, negotiating the route to its destination unaided. The towing car travels within the speed limits of the factory, and automatically stops if it detects an obstacle or hazard ahead, before setting off again when it has determined that the road ahead

Since trial operations of the system began roughly a year ago, more than 1,600 test runs have been carried out at the plant. The data acquired has been utilized to ensure that the system can operate reliably within the plant’s premises. A safety system and a fail-safe system have been developed to counter potential risks or unexpected conditions the IVT system may face during autonomous driving, including adverse weather and low light conditions. Nissan will continue to test the system at its Oppama Plant, and will examine the possibility of implementation at other manufacturing facilities both in and outside Japan. Nissan has been developing autonomous driving technology for decades. In August, the company launched ProPILOT, an awardwinning single-lane autonomous driving technology for highway use. IVT further showcases Nissan’s holistic approach to mobility, expanding the advantages of driverless technologies beyond personal usage. The data and know-how obtained through this project will help to enable broader adoption of autonomous driving technology, in order to provide new solutions to our customers, and to our society.

gazman Car Pollution December was a bad month for cars and they were yet again blamed for polluting cities around the world. First, we had Paris which was covered in smog that was so bad people at the bottom of the Eiffel tower could not see the top. We have seen on the news places like Beijing but for Europe this was shocking. I have lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil which is a very congested and polluted city and many years ago they made the decision to only allow car registration plates ending in odd numbers into the city on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday and even numbers on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Now many years later Paris was forced to do the same in a dramatic effort to stop the spread of pollution. Anybody that did not obey the law faced having the cars taken from them and also fined. This is fine if you have lots of money or you have two cars with an even and odd number on the

registration plate but for many others it was a real problem. Obviously in Bahrain this is not such a big problem but we often see problems that strike other countries trickle down to the rest of the world and air quality and pollution in certain days is particularly nasty. When there is a dust storm could we potentially see cars banned from certain parts of Bahrain? Many countries in the Gulf score quite badly on air pollution statistics. Of course there are many factors in this and it is not just to do with cars but if like we get something like what happened to Paris it would be interesting to see what might happen. In the last couple of days the problem of smog started to affect Madrid. They also decided to copy Sao Paolo and Paris and banned certain registration plates on certain days until the smog has lifted.

As the population of Bahrain continues to grow and also the number of cars on the roads continues to grow this could be a big problem that will affect us sooner rather than later. One saving grace for the Gulf is that diesel cars once seen as a greener alternative to petrol has been exposed as even more dangerous as petrol but diesel cars rarely exist in Bahrain. Four of the biggest cities in the world are banning diesel cars completely by 2025. Paris, Mexico City, Athens and Madrid are taking a huge step in banning diesel cars all together. Diesel cars produce soot which contains nitrogen dioxide which can enter and stay in the lungs. It is estimated that 500,000 people die early in Europe due to air pollution every year and up to 3 million worldwide. This is a massive issue and as we bring in 2017 it is crucial that countries begin to tackle air pollution.
