We’ve been busy as always bringing you all the highlights of the month so you don’t need to get your tyres wet. One of my personal highlights was the launch of an exclusive YAMAHA Motorcycle Showroom in Bahrain from the AJM Kooheji Group. At the BIC all eyes are on The Home of Motorsport in BAHRAIN as it gears up for the biggest and best ever 2017 Formula 1 Gulf Air Grand Prix. Euro Motors welcomes the all new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Ebrahim K. Kanoo holds an awesome LEXUS F and F SPORT Experience Event @ BIC. Of course we were at the new range launch of the stunning new PORSCHE PANAMERA. Check out those beauties. There was a new NISSAN on the block the all-new crossover KICKS…….. GAZ were incredibly proud to be the media sponsor of the car show on the Bahrain Bay organised by American Eagles in association with the Japanese Car Club. I sat down for an amazing chat with Shaikh Mohammed Bin Salman AlKhalifa who talked knowledgeably about everything motor related. He is of course the boss of MSK Racing. Bahrain Motorcycle Club has concluded its Cruising Section trip to Kuwait. We interviewed Mr BAREER JASSIM Brand Manager of Tasheelat Automotive Bahrain. We took the scarily rapid DODGE CHARGER RT and the slightly less so NISSAN PATHFINDER out for a test drive. We take a very long look at the PAGANI HUAYRA ROADSTER it is seriously a work of art. In MOTORSPORT we look at the Middle East Drift Championship Round 1 – Qatar Racing Club. Jari Matti Latvala won his 4th Rally Sweden last Sunday as Toyota celebrated victory just 2 years into its comeback after 17 years in the wilderness. E Kanoo Racing’s Mohammed and White rewrite record books at the BIC Drag Strip. Cullen cruises to victory in the second race at the Yas Marina Circuit in Round 4 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East. We look at a man’s labour of love in BIKE and a CHICANO Style Hog. And the usual suspects of GAZMAN GAZ TECH INSTAGAZ and SAFETY. See you next month...

NanoFlowcell Quant 48Volt Concept
NanoFlowcell Holdings will present its latest advances in flow cell research at 2017 Geneva International Motor Show. Wrapped in the extravagant bodywork of an electric sports car that is utterly unique in the automotive industry, the nanoFlowcell Quant 48Volt, the company is showcasing the state-of-the-art in modern flow cell research. nanoFlowcell Holdings has succeeded in developing the first ever controllable flow cell that enables a standalone design for lowvoltage electric drives without the need for heavy and expensive supercapacitors. And the 2+2-seater has no lack of power at its disposal - the 560 kW all-wheel drive delivers top speeds of up to 300 km/h. However, nanoFlowcellÂŽ 48Volt
22
is not just about powerful performance, but is also currently the lightest, safest, most environmentally compatible and most economical drive system available anywhere for electric vehicles. What makes the nanoFlowcell Quant 48Volt so special is the radical new design of its flow cell drive. The previous model, the Quant FE, achieved its exceptionally sporty performance figures with a 700 V high-voltage drive system, whereby the Quant 48Volt runs entirely on low-voltage technology. To compete in acceleration and power output with vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, conventional electric vehicles need electric drive
systems with a battery voltage of 400 V and more. In fact, the automotive industry is currently contemplating increasing the voltage in electric vehicles to 800 V in future. The Quant 48Volt with nanoFlowcellÂŽ low-voltage drive is forward-looking electric mobility. The flow cell energy of the nanoFlowcell is not harmful either to health or the environment. In a low-voltage sports car like the Quant 48Volt, nanoFlowcellÂŽ 48Volt technology demonstrates powerful performance and thus draws attention to what is currently the lightest, safest, most environmentally compatible and economical drive system there is for electric vehicles.

Pagani Huayra Roadster
The objective is always to outdo oneself. Pure beauty in all shapes and surfaces - this is the philosophy behind Horacio Pagani’s latest creation. From this foundation is built a masterpiece with a perfect balance of attention to detail and technological advancement. The combination of Art and Science: a founding principle and cornerstone to the philosophy of Pagani Automobili. This creed comes from the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, who pursued perfection in form and function at every stage of the process, down to the most minute component of the design. All Pagani creations are born from this relentless chase of beauty and passion. The Pagani Huayra Roadster represents an unbridled artistic showcase, featuring the most dynamic technology; this is Horacio Pagani’s openair tribute to the gods of wind. First presented to the public in Geneva in 2011, the Pagani Huayra Coupe marked a new era of hypercars. The Huayra Coupe became the gold standard, raising the bar for lightweight build and innovative performance-based technology. This formidable combination earned the Huayra Coupe the most accolades in the automobile
30
industry, second only to the Zonda. The Huayra BC was a natural evolution, raw power packaged into a 1,218 kg highperformance automobile, and, at 1.8 G, capable of the highest lateral acceleration ever seen on a car with road tires. Valuable experience and knowledge gained from relentless testing on the road and the most difficult circuits of the world, enabled Pagani Automobili to build a solid technical
premise from which to base all Research and Development. This foundation and expertise was crucial in the development of the technical solutions applied to the Pagani Huayra Roadster. The Pagani Huayra Roadster project began in 2010, with the ostensibly simple idea of a Huayra Coupe with a removable roof and conventional doors, as was developed for the Zonda Roadster in 2003. In 2013, the design
was scrapped and everything restarted from the beginning of the design process. Each Pagani creation has a life of its own, every detail must have its own harmony in line with the spirit and soul of the machine car. The Pagani Huayra Roadster became a project independent of its predecessor, a machine car with its own soul.
Huayra Roadster design: the Zonda Cinque Roadster. The overall shape is smooth and immediate, where each line has a beginning and a definite end. Every last detail has been revised- every contour made more defined, every curve redrawn multiple times to arrive together in a cohesive, liquid form.
From the very beginning, the Pagani Huayra Roadster door design followed in the tradition of the Mercedes-Benz models of the 1950’s, specifically the gullwing doors of the 300-SL, and its Roadster variant featuring conventional doors. In the end, the design closely follows in the tradition of Pagani - the vehicle best represented in the
From the more aggressive and pronounced mouth of the car, framed by wider wheel arches, from the shape of the roll bars to the upgraded interior- every single element of the car has been scrutinized and redesigned. Every detail considered and developed with its own unique design language, in direct symmetry with aerodynamic requirements.
The bonnet has a fundamental function: an elegant vitrine containing both the technology and the art of the engine. By natural evolution, its design took on a life of its own, becoming a space with its own stylistic identity, itself worthy of being exhibited in an art gallery. Unlike most modern supercars, the Pagani Huayra Roadster is almost fully exposed, with nearly every mechanical part visible, every last piece proud to be revealed. Staying true to the Pagani philosophy of respecting every last detail in the design, every piece of the car given consideration and attention. Even the smallest screw is designed to be both beautiful and functional.

FEATURE Last week I had a very enjoyable chat with Shaikh Mohammed Bin Salman Alkhalifa, is of course in charge of MSK Racing. I drove straight in and asked him about the challenge of setting up such an ambitious project. He told me that he was never really into Drag Racing but he loved Superbikes and enjoyed racing them. He then had an idea about setting up a team as all his friends shared his passion. He also wanted an end to all the street races he had seen and make sure that racing could be fun but also safe under the correct rules and regulations and take more precautions on an FIA certified race track. He had some meetings and decided
to sponsor them fully. He wanted to put his friend’s skills and expertise to practice and start more than just a racing team but also a friendship community. At first they had 12 members and now they have doubled in numbers to 24. He continued telling me about the fact that MSK Racing is part of MSK Performance group who own a service hub and other services as well. They also have a team called Super Adventure Riders that comes under the MSK Racing umbrella and they travel around the world every year on our adventure motorbikes and help children, the poor, refugees and elderly people. It is a humanitarian thing he told me. I think he is
34
such a legend for doing something so kind. Shaikh Mohammed is a real inspiration. He is very proud of his achievements and so he should be. He said that MSK Racing is the first official motorcycle race club registered with the BMF. It is very different to other groups though as it is first and foremost a racing team. They have a Drag Race team, a Superbike Team, an Adventure Team and a Top Speed World Record Team. MSK Racing hold 2 World Records, the first is for the fastest Stock Drag Bike and the World’s Fastest Top Speed Bike at 800m. I wanted to know more about what happens off track; Shaikh Mohammed was more than
willing to let me into a few secrets, says the key to MSK Racing being such a success is in their preparation. They have all the tools, tyres, wheels, clutches and everything else in stock just in case they need something it is there already. They are as we speak building 3 extremely powerful motorbikes. They will be joining the street and superstreet category for next season’s drag race. They are also building a custom 600cc motorbike to join the next season’s super stock competition. I asked Shaikh Mohammed, what he looked for in a rider for his excellent machines. He told me that his favourite type of driver was one that shows up on time, listens to what we tell him, understands the importance of team work and helps other drivers improve on their weaknesses. He also stressed the importance of safety on his team. He is always prepared and makes sure that the riders are fully equipped with all the equipment they need to ensure a safe ride. I asked him about some of his earlier memories and he talked about in 2009 he took his first bike to the track because he wanted to push himself and become on the same level as the top professional riders. He always considered himself a good rider but he knew he could be even better. He won 3rd position in the UAE Superbike Championship that was held at Dubai Autodrome in February 2017 and that was his first ever paddock pass. He is not content with this and now he has a taste of success he wants more and he knows he needs to keep pushing and practicing to achieve his ultimate goals.

Is there a more iconic car than the Dodge Charger? It has epitomised cool for the last 50 years. From Steve McQueen in Bullitt through to the Fast and Furious franchise and that crazy Dodge Charger R/T Toretto drives out of the plane the Charger is at home in the movies as much as Brad Pitt. I was lucky enough to take the beast out for a spin although it was more the car took me for a ride. First thing to note about the Charger is the variety basically you are like the car designer as you can basically have it any style and any colour possible. For example the SRT Hellcat, very aptly named, is the fastest, quickest and most powerful sedan ever made. It has a supercharged 6.2litre engine. The top speed is 328km/ph, can drive ¼ mile in 11 seconds flat. All that and it has 707 horsepower. Unfortunately I was driving the RT which felt powerful enough for me. The R/T has a 5.7 litre V8 engine with 370 horsepower. On the outside it looks like a typical Charger. You can add lots of different trims like the Daytona and Scat Pack until you find the one that’s right for you. Just looking at the car you know it’s going to be a fast ride. It definitely tips it hat to the original Charger. Inside it’s not as luxurious as other sedans
42
but then I don’t think people buy a Charger for the interiors. They buy one because they know it is going to be fun and a little wild. It is not a typical family car but then there is nothing typical about this car. It is very spacious especially in the front and then that just adds to the thrill of driving this car. One of my favourite non-performance improvements is the tech. It now has an 8.4” Uconnect touchscreen which is very responsive and the HD graphics are really strong. Now the most important thing. What is it like to drive? It is an amazing ride. There are lots of cars that have better this and that but this car is a real car. It doesn’t need any fancy gimmicks. It is a car that is cool. It is a car that is fun and most importantly if you love your muscle cars, if you love the sound of an engine roaring away contentedly then this my friend is the car for you. It is not a car that blends into the scenery this is a car that takes all the attention. I read a review of this car and some stuffy fool gave it a 3 star rating moaning about how you can’t see much out of the rear windscreen……. What are you missing? All you are going to see are other cars rapidly disappearing a bit of dust because this car is so fast and powerful that will be all you see. This car is a monster, a wild untamed beast. I love it.

I’ve always been a fan of the Nissan Pathfinder. It always feels a bit more drivable than the Patrol and always has enough tech and gadgetry to keep me happy. I was looking forward to taking it out for a ride and also to see what was new. Sometimes when vehicles get a makeover I find it hard to see anything new or different. A little bit of tweaking here and there and that is it. You cannot accuse of Nissan of this with the 2017 version of the Pathfinder. It has been changed a lot. I guess Nissan had to as the crossover market is not just crowded it is jam-packed full of quality vehicles. Nissan not content with maintaining its position have gone all out. One thing that hasn’t changed much is the exterior. It is still the same shape and model with a few alterations here and there. That’s probably the only thing that has stayed pretty much the same everywhere else there has been big changes and upgrades. One of the most significant changes is under the bonnet. The new engine is a 3.5 litre V6. It pumps out 284 horsepower and it feels very good and has definite controlled aggression on the roads. That’s a whole new 24 horsepower on the last incarnation of the Pathfinder. It still has the continuously variable transmission or CVT as the only gearbox available even if you go for the all-wheel drivetrain as opposed to the front
46
wheel drive version. Fuel economy has been improved for those of you not wanting to spend too much on petrol. One of the other big changes is in the towing capacity. The Pathfinder can now tow a whopping great 6000 pounds. Inside the first thing I noticed was a bigger touchscreen. It is now 8 inches and is very easily navigable and responsive. The higher up you go on the range the more impressive the sound and it has a spectacular Bose audio system inside it on the top end models. It has all the usual suspects an impeccable safety level and driver assist for those senior moments we sometimes have on the roads. The third row is easy to get to but it is a bit cramped in there. I found it an enjoyable ride. It felt a bit lighter and a lot more responsive than its predecessor. The Nissan Pathfinder manged to go from 0-100 kph in 7.4 seconds which isn’t bad. I don’t think many people will buy the Pathfinder as an off roader but it can go off road but it isn’t the tallest so be careful going over anything too bumpy. Nissan have tried to produce something unique but the problem is the market is crowded, what it has produced is a crossover that is a good all-rounder. It is a highly enjoyable ride and I loved every minute of it.

Mercedes head into the 2017 season looking to extend their run of three consecutive constructors and drivers championship titles. However over the winter they have had to come to terms with the loss of reigning world champion Nico Rosberg and top technical chief Paddy Lowe.
“The car feels almost identical to last year’s car in terms of the ergonomics,” said Hamilton after his shakedown run. “But you’ve just got this bigger, more powerful beast around you.” Hamilton’s new team mate Valtteri Bottas will drive the car for the first time later today. “What I really like is how clean it looks but at the same time there’s a massive amount of detail in all of the areas,” said Bottas. “The rear end, around the bargeboards, the front wing, all these details, all the development that has been done, how far everything has been taken with this car.” “It looks cool and I can’t wait to drive it.”
Force India reveal their 2017 car at Silverstone he said. “Well, good luck to him. He might have to eat his words. It’s not the amount of arms you have, it’s the quality of your weaponry.” Technical director Andrew Green said the wholesale changes in Formula One’s regulations for 2017 “require a change in mentality.” “It took a bit of time to adjust at first, but we are there now and I am confident we know where to look and where the performance is coming from with this car.” Green predicted a rapid rate development under the new rules:
The first pictures of the new Force India VJM10 for 2017 have been revealed. The team revealed their latest racer at Silverstone. Force India heads into the 2017 season following their most successful campaign to date last season when they finished fourth overall. Team co-owner Vijay Mallya would not be drawn on whether they will increase

their tally of two podiums from last year. But he was quick to refute Renault team principal Cyril Abiteboul’s claim that non-manufacturer teams could find themselves out-gunned under F1’s new regulations. “I read an article this morning that Cyril Abiteboul of Renault said that poor teams such as Force India were going to suffer in this arms race,”
in
“The development slope is incredibly steep and we are going to see significant updates to the cars at regular intervals, right from the start. It’s going to be big updates and I don’t think development will start to taper off any time soon.” The VJM10 has several striking differences between it and the cars launched so far. The tip of the nose is split and there is a discernible step where it meets the chassis.
McLaren reveal new car and orange livery generation power unit, the RA617H, which has been thoroughly revised by the company’s team of talented engineers.” The car’s livery marks a departure from the black designs used for the past two seasons and a return to McLaren’s heritage orange colouring. McLaren’s executive director Zak Brown explained this was in response to demands from the team’s supporters. “We went through a variety of designs and ultimately it was in response to fans,” he said. “We’ve had so much outreach from the fans, ‘we want to have some orange’.” McLaren has gone four seasons without winning a race and Brown stopped short of saying this will be the car that ends their drought.
The first pictures of the new McLaren MCL32 for 2017 have been revealed. The team unveiled their car for the first time at the McLaren Thought Leadership Centre in Woking. McLaren say their new racer “follows in the evolutionary footsteps of its two immediate predecessors, MP4-30
and MP4-31, but it has been overhauled in every area as the design team has looked to capitalise on a series of new aerodynamic regulations introduced for 2017.” They describe the MCL32 as “an extremely elegant but aggressive-looking race car, fitted with Honda’s latest-
“We’re going to get there,” he said. “This team’s highly frustrated that we’re not winning races. We’ve got a new package and with these things it takes a little bit of time.” “2015 was obviously a very difficult year, ’16 wasn’t a great year by McLaren standards but it was forward progress. And I think that’s what we want to see in 2016 is that forward progress and once we get there we’ll be pretty hard to knock back down.”
Red Bull reveal their “prettiest” F1 car for 2017 The first pictures of the new Red Bull RB13 for 2017 have been revealed. A video of the car released by the team on the day before testing is due to begin revealed little of the RB13’s details. However the car’s nose, which appears to incorporate a vent, immediately drew attention. Team principal Christian Horner described the RB13 as “one of the prettiest cars we’ve designed and made.” “The geometry of the car under these new regulations, the proportions looks right,” he said. “It looks mean, it looks fast.” “It’s that old adage ‘if it looks right, it tends to go alright’. And this car for sure looks right.” Chief technical officer Adrian Newey agreed the new regulations for 2017 are a change for the better. “There’s a feeling, which I do agree with that since we went to narrow-track cars back in 1998 the cars always looked a bit out-of-proportion,” he said. “Quite a narrow car, reasonably wide tyres, and very long cars, increasingly.” “So the proportions look strange. By going back to a wider track with a wider tyres, proportionally they should look better.” The RB13 will have its first run when
testing begins at the Circuit de Catalunya tomorrow. “It always an anxious moment before the car runs for the first time, for it to drive out of the garage down the pit lane,” said Horner. “The first thing you want to see is it comes back at the end of the lap. But it’s an exciting moment to see the car break cover.” After winning two races last year and finishing second in the world
championship the team has set it sights on competing with Mercedes in 2017. “Mercedes for sure they’re the triple world champions, they’re the team to beat,” said Horner. “They set the bar pretty high but that’s what we’re aspiring to.” “The driver line-up we have is fantastic, we’ve had great stability in the team, and we’re excited about the year ahead.”

EMOTIONAL WIN FOR LATVALA JARI-MATTI LATVALA WON HIS FOURTH RALLY SWEDEN ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON AS TOYOTA CELEBRATED VICTORY JUST TWO RALLIES INTO ITS COMEBACK FOLLOWING A 17-YEAR ABSENCE FROM THE FIA WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP.
Dani Sordo was the top Hyundai finisher in fourth following Neuville’s accident. The Spaniard finished 39.7sec ahead of Craig Breen, who struggled to perfect his Citroën C3’s set-up but banked good points from a solid debut in the car. Elfyn Evans was sixth in another Fiesta, despite losing nearly a minute with an engine misfire in today’s opening stage. The Welshman made repairs and the car was restored to full health for the final two tests. Hayden Paddon was just 4.6sec behind in a Hyundai i20 Coupe, with Stéphane Lefebvre, WRC 2 winner Pontus Tidemand and Teemu Suninen completing the leaderboard. Neuville eventually finished 13th after restarting today, just behind Kris Meeke whose disappointing weekend culminated with a penultimate stage spin.
It was the Finn’s 17th career victory, but one of his most emotional. He faced a season on the sidelines after his Volkswagen team withdrew from the sport at the end of last season, before finally joining the Japanese manufacturer in a late deal. Latvala began the final leg with a slender 3.8sec lead over Ott Tänak after longtime leader Thierry Neuville crashed last night. He won all three snow and ice-covered speed tests in his Yaris World Rally Car to extend the margin to 29.2sec. He claimed maximum bonus points from the Power Stage and, after finishing second in the season-opening Rallye Monte-Carlo, holds a four-point lead in the drivers’ standings. It is the first time any driver other than four-time champion Sébastien Ogier has led the championship since February 2014. “It’s amazing. A new team, a new car, our second rally and we’re winning. I have no words to describe it, I’m so emotional. We’re at a good level but now we go forward and it gets more difficult. Mexico is next up and I’m really motivated for the championship,” he said. Tänak, driving a Ford Fiesta, had the upper hand on Latvala yesterday when

he closed in. The Estonian was unhappy with his car’s handling today and after conceding seven seconds in the opening special stage, he settled for second, matching his career-best result. Team-mate Ogier was also in the victory fight but a spin in the first corner of the opening test ended his hopes and he finished 30.3sec behind Tänak.

Pedrosa declared that Honda was “satisfied” with what it accomplished at Jerez. The final official pre-season test takes place at Losail on March 10-12.
A Honda statement said the accident caused minimal disruption to the testing programme. Marquez was quickly passed fit to ride again after a check in the Spanish Grand Prix venue’s medical centre, although he did not return to the track. “I crashed in the afternoon and dislocated my shoulder, but luckily it was nothing serious,” said Marquez.

MotoGP’s sole floodlit event has always run in dry conditions so far, with the 2009 race postponed to a Monday after freak rain hit the Losail track on the planned Sunday. But earlier this month the track was artificially soaked in order for Dorna and FIM Safety Commission

E Kanoo Racing’s Mohammed and White rewrite record books at BIC drag strip
E Kanoo Racing set a pair of new World Records to headline an exciting fourth and penultimate round of the 2016/2017 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship-Arabian Pro Series, held over the weekend at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir. Bahraini superstar Khaled Mohammed registered a new world’s best in the Super Street V8 category, while American drag racing icon Gary White matched his teammate’s accomplishment with his own in the Outlaw 6-Cylinder class. Both drivers set their new World Records en route to claiming fantastic victories in their respective categories. Another driver who exce1lled in the meeting was the legendary Steve Jackson of Bahrain1Racing. Popularly known as “Stevie Fast”, Jackson clinched his own fine triumph – second in a row and third of the season – in the highly competitive Pro Mod class. The round attracted scores of drag racers from all over the world. They battled it out for points, pride and bragging rights along BIC’s world-class quarter-mile drag strip, which is a member of the National Hot Rod Association Worldwide Network. Also taking place at BIC over the weekend was two nights of exhibition runs by the UK-

In the Super Street V8 category, Mohammed made a brilliant pass of 3.984 seconds in the final against Kuwaiti Abdulla Al Shati at a speed of 322.58kph. While setting a new World Record, it was also the first-ever time for a car in this category to dip into the three second-mark. Al Shati could only manage a time of 4.272s
at 275.45kph as he settled for second place. Meanwhile, White enjoyed his own recordbreaking success in E Kanoo Racing’s stock chassis GT86 in the Outlaw 6-Cylinder. White ran a quick 6.494s at 355.49kph, and it was done on a 29.5/10.5 tyre with no wheelie bar. White defeated a valiant Yousif Al Zayani, who finished second in the class with a run of 7.039s in the final at 324.53kph. In the Pro Mod category, Bahrain1Racing’s Jackson claimed a narrow win over

Race for a Cause
INTERVIEW WITH MARTYNA EWA AL-QASSAB - first-ever lady driver to finish on the podium in the history of the Bahrain International Circuit 2,000cc Challenge. Martyna Ewa Al-Qassab, aka Um Talal. Originally from Poland married to Bahrain Ramzi Al-Qassab and proud Mother of 2 boys, Talal (4 years old) & little bother Essa (1 year old). Passionate about sports, travel, gliding & competing. A graduate in Sports Management and MBA-er at Manchester Business School. Ex-Poland TaekwonDo Team Member representative Poland at an International level. Previously worked for BIC at Bahrain International Karting Circuit.
Q. As a lady racing driver, how would you describe your experience has been in the BIC 2,000cc Challenge? A.
Currently am standing 5th position in the total of 17 drivers for the Championship and the last race I made it onto the Podium winning 3rd place, the first female to do so in Bahrain 10 years 2000cc Championship J So am extremely pleased with that accomplishment. But 3rd place is just a step in the right
60
direction not the end result…I have my eyes focused on 2 steps ahead.
Q. How would you rate the level of competition? A.
There are new racers, like myself and a full range of different drivers ranging from highly experienced drivers that have been competing at the top end over many years, to drivers totally new to the sport. The drivers are from different regions across the GCC and residents from different nationalities so it makes each race eager to see who on the grid and where you need to aim to finish the race. As it is a Driver’s Championship, it does not mean the fastest car and driver will end up in the top ranking at the end of the Championship 8 races season, it’s about consistency, strategy and finishing each race, and yes of course during it in the fastest possible way.
Q. How do you think the 2,000cc
Challenge Championship helps open up new doors for young drivers in the Kingdom?
A.
It’s a great series that can only open up new doors for young drivers, but also drivers of all ages. It is for all that are interested into trying their hand at motor racing and the accessibility is amazing, from the team at Bahrain Motorsport Federation and CRC’s support to obtain an official race licenses to get you on the track ready, can ensure you a place on the grid based on your goals to make it happen.
Q. What pushed you to be a race driver? A.
Passion to challenge myself while raising awareness for the important Think Pink Cause. Also the fact that in my home of Bahrain all this is made possible through the accessibly, support and encouragement of such sporting culture that is welcoming for all, male or female, is a unique opportunity that inspired me to take up this new challenge.
Q. What are your ultimate goals in your motorsport career?
Q. Is there anything specific you would have done differently?
A.
A.
To challenge myself and my competitors to take me as far and as FAST as I can to raise awareness and support the Think Pink campaign racing under the ‘Think Pink Racing’ and of course to also to encourage more females to get behind the wheel and win. My long term future goal is to race in as many championships as well as race series to reach the podium by developing my driving and racing skills…. Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge ME as first female driver J
Waiting on the grid for the lights before launching off into the horizon! Yes, my first ever race I managed to do a false start, therefore importance to keep cool calm and collective in critical. But again with the supportive atmosphere from all my fellow drivers encouraging me that they have all done the same at some point of their racing career, which if not true then that are all just gentlemen. Think Pink campaign as we know is helping the fight against Breast Cancer and important for me to raise the awareness of early detection through
regular checkup. As we all now the impact of Breast Cancer is so challenging to the individual, but also their family and wider circle of friends. Our goal to encourage regular checkups for our loved ones, as the benefits of Early Detection can save lives. That’s why I am Racing to Support Think Pink. The 2000 Championship race days at BIC are filled with excitement, great entertainment and superb racing. A fantastic day out for friends and family, so I encourage you all to head down and for a great day at the BIC. Please say hello when you come down and meet our Clio Think Pink Race Car. Following us on Instagram @teammarte.
Q. How does participating in the 2,000cc Challenge help you to achieve the goal? A.
The support from fellow drivers and all the crew at BIC for me as a female driver has been outstanding and very much encouraging. The tips and advice from the great BIC instructors and other drivers in the safe professional racing environment overlooked by the CRC is incredibly rewarding and despite it being a competition it also strangely feels like a team effort. A fun and friendly atmosphere that am positive to say most probably only exist in Bahrain at a racing series which is what makes it all very enjoyable. Even when mistakes are made the first thing you hear is, ‘don’t worry we have all done that ‘and the second thing is advise on how to correct it to avoid next time round.
Q. What is the one thing you like to do before getting behind the wheel for a race? A.
Get focused remind myself of the goal and stick to the race strategy
Q. Tell us how you got into racing and what you like most about being a car racer? A.
I got into racing through my husbandMy passion for competition combined with the newly discovered interested in motor sports, through my husband Ramzi and his encouragement led us to both start to be competing in this years 2000cc Championship series. It is a wonderful way of us spending time together and a great hobby that with the BIC at our doorstep in Bahrain is something we are very fortunate to be a part of. My husband coordinates all the technical side of it, along with the support friends and Coco’s Car Care Garage and we look at the new ways of improving not only of the time, but technique and racing strategies.

Mohammed Mattar and Rashid Almuammari were the big winners in their respective series, held as part of the Bahrain Karting Sprint Championship (BKSC) at Bahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC) in Sakhir. Mattar was the overall victor in round four of the Bahrain Rotax Mojo Max Challenge (BRMMC) while Almuammari claimed first place in round six of the Bahrain SWS Sprint Championship (SSWS). Both the BRMMC and SSWS are a part of the BKSC. All the action was held along BIKC’s 1.414-kilometre Commission Internationale de Karting (CIK) Track. In the BRMMC, Mattar claimed first place after completing their 15-lap Final in a total time of 14 minutes 42.337 seconds. Mattar did well to overcome a hard challenge from his closest competitors, who included Hussain Hassan who took the win in the PreFinal. Khaled Alsaei was not far behind Mattar in second place 2.648 seconds behind, while Hassan had to settle for third place 5.173s back. Aside from the overall classification, all three drivers were also ranked as the top three in the Max category. Youngster Talal Beshara was the winner in the Junior Max class. FIA Confirms Nissan’s Adel Abdulla As 2016 FIA T2 World Champion
Nissan’s Adel Abdulla has won his FIA appeal and has belatedly been crowned the 2016 FIA T2 World Champion. my title. I expect the competition to be even stronger this year. The timing of the decision was particularly poignant for me with the new season set to start in Russia at the end of February. “I am the number one ranked T2 driver in the world and it is the perfect start to what I know will be another challenging year.”
But Adel Hussein’s TOK Sport team protested the legality of his main rival’s car at the Rally of Morocco in October and the protest was upheld at a recent FIA Court of Appeal. This meant Saeidan lost the points he scored at the event and Adel Hussein was declared the FIA T2 World Champion, with Nissan’s rugged Patrol on top of the championship for the second successive year , after Denis Berezovskiy’s victory in 2015. Cullen cruises to victory in second race at Yas Marina Circuit in Round 4 of Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East
After a high-octane Race 2 of Round 4 at the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East, Irishman Ryan Cullen secured his fifth win of the championship in sensational style. Starting second on the grid, alongside guest driver and Race 1 winner Charlie Eastwood, Cullen’s scorching start allowed him to enter turn one side-byside with Eastwood, holding his nerve to come out of the bend race leader. UK driver Tom Oliphant jumped his fellow Porsche Carrera Cup driver Eastwood

on lap one too, before Dylan Pereira in fourth also gave it a shot. Pereira and Eastwood wrestled for third, resulting in a small collision yet a costly drivethrough time penalty for Eastwood and Pereira dropping to last on the grid. That left Qatari resident Charlie Frijns to take third on the podium. Saudi Arabia’s Bandar Alesayi qualified in sixth, posting significantly quicker times than in qualifying for Race 1. The good form for Alesayi continued seeing him get off to a strong start in Race 2.
Managing to avoid trouble in the opening turn, Alesayi climbed a position early on and continued to put the pressure on the drivers at the front of the pack. As well as trying to close the gap to the front, Alesayi also had to concentrate on some spectacular defending, keeping rival category driver Al Faisal Al Zubair firmly behind him. Alesayi continued to push hard, finishing the race in fourth position, a rewarding improvement on his seventh place finish in Race 1. This see’s Alesayi sit in sixth place overall and
second in the silver category standings going into Round 5 in Bahrain. Speaking after the race, Alesayi said: “It was a good result for me, I was doing well and felt comfortable in my position early on. I made one mistake and, unfortunately, Charlie Frijns took advantage and overtook me. I had to defend well against Al Faisal and overall I am happy with the result. Charlie and I have a mutual respect for each other and this showed during the race today, with a good clean competition throughout.” Fresh from the podium, race champion Cullen said: “It was a good race with a great start, resulting in me taking the lead. I could see a collision between Charlie Eastwood and Dylan Pereira behind me. I then noticed the drive-through penalty for Charlie, so as I saw him coming, I did not put up too much of a fight. “I’ve been starting great this season - that has always been my strength. From fifth on the grid yesterday to finish second and now second to win today, it all feels great. Very happy with where I am in this championship and everything I’ve taken from it so far.” Leaders Cullen and Oliphant experienced a relatively clear track as they separated themselves from the rest of the grid lapon-lap. Oliphant had an outstanding race, after a disappointing fifth in Race 1. The UK driver showed fight in qualifying to secure a second row start, which he took advantage off in lap one to take second.

I met up with Khalil Ashkanai. Khalil is 43 year old and he has been working for the last 16 years in ALBA as a Senior Technical Operator. His hobbies are muscle cars and also vintage bikes. I asked him about his current bike and he told me that at the moment he is riding a 2010 Harley Davidson Road King Classic. He has modified the whole bike into a Chicano style. The first change he made was changing the front wheel from 16 to 21 diamond spokes and stretched the front fender to the ground and then changed the fork and the fork boots and then installed a beach handle bar. He then changed the Rocker head into a Panhead classic style and also changed the original primary to an open belt and changed all the non-chrome
68
parts of the whole engine into chrome. He wasn’t happy with the front wheel being the only diamond shape so he ordered a custom floorboard with diamond cuts and made a new custom made fibre saddle bags with matching diamond cut latches to match the front wheel. Finally he decided to change the original seat into a solo seat and added a custom SAMSON fishtail exhaust and headers. The missing piece of the jigsaw was when he ordered a custom air hydraulic suspension kit with a centre stand. I asked him more about his passion for bikes and he told me that it is because it is an amazing sport that makes him feel free and gives him the ability to lose his mind just by looking at bikes. It is like he is in another world. He thinks of his bike as a member of the family. We then had a chat about his favourite bikes and he said he would love to get a Harley Davidson 1998 Springer Anniversary edition. His favourite modern bike is the latest KTM Super Duke. He thinks the Knuckle Dragger by Azzkikr Custom Cycles is the best bike ever made. I asked him if he had any pearls of wisdom he would like to share with Gaz readers; he said that we should all respect bikers on the road and that bikers should stay safe and respect the rules of the road. Wise words indeed.

SAFETY
Car Safety Features Safety remains a top concern for new-car shoppers, and fortunately, today’s modern cars offer more occupant protection and accident avoidance technologies than the typical model being traded in. But not all cars are equal; there are clearly those models that perform better in our dynamic tests, as well as crash tests conducted by the government and insurance industry. Test results on our car model pages reveal the differences, though there is more to safety. New technologies offer potential benefits, such as blind-spot detection and forwardcollision warning systems. But ultimately, the driver is a critical factor, especially among teens and older drivers.
The most important thing you can do to protect your life is to buckle your seatbelt. Safety belts save lives on their own and many of the more advanced safety features, such as forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking can help you avoid accidents. Don’t overlook safety features when comparing different models. Antilock brakes and electronic stability control, for instance, are very desirable. Although now standard on new cars, these features are well worth seeking out if you’re buying an older car.
Airbags
Front airbags have been standard on all new cars since 1998 and light trucks since 1999. Most vehicles had them even before then. Crash sensors connected to an onboard computer detect a frontal collision and trigger the bags. The bags inflate in a few milliseconds—the blink of an eye—then immediately start deflating. While airbags have saved thousands of lives, they also have the potential to cause injury or even death to children or to occupants who aren’t using a seatbelt. Children under 12 should be seated in the rear in an appropriate restraint system and rear-facing child seats should never be installed in front seats equipped with airbags.
Antilock brakes (ABS)
Before antilock brakes came along, it was all too easy to lock up the wheels (stop them from turning) during hard braking. Sliding the front tires makes it impossible to steer, particularly on slippery surfaces. ABS prevents this from happening by using sensors at each wheel and a computer that maximizes braking action at each individual wheel to prevent lock-up. ABS allows the driver to retain steering control while braking, so that the car can be maneuvered around an obstacle, if necessary. Some drivers, unaccustomed to ABS actuation, may be alarmed as the pulsing sensation conveyed through the brake pedal and chattering at

the wheels when used. Not to worry. This is the system rapidly applying the brakes to provide maximum power and control. The trick is to push hard on the pedal and let the system do its job.
Traction control
This electronically controlled system limits wheel spin during acceleration so that the drive wheels have maximum traction. It’s particularly useful when starting off in wet or icy conditions, and/or launching with a highhorsepower engine. Some traction-control systems operate only at low speeds, while others work at all speeds. Most traction-control systems use the car’s antilock brake system to momentarily brake a spinning wheel. This routes power to the opposite drive wheel. Some systems also may throttle back the engine, and upshift the transmission, to prevent wheel spin.
Electronic stability control
Electronic stability control (ESC) takes traction control a step further. This system helps keep the vehicle on its intended
path during a turn, to avoid sliding or skidding. It uses a computer linked to a series of sensors—detecting wheel speed, steering angle, sideways motion, and yaw (rotation). If the car drifts outside the driver’s intended path, the stability-control system momentarily brakes one or more wheels and, depending on the system, reduces engine power to pull the car back on course.
Safety-belt features
While the seatbelt is arguably the single most important piece of safety equipment, enhanced features help seatbelts do their job more effectively. Seatbelt pretensioners instantly retract the belts to take up slack during a frontal impact. This also helps position occupants properly to take full advantage of a deploying air bag. Force limiters, a companion feature to pretensioners, manage the force that the shoulder belt builds up on the occupant’s chest. After the pretensioners tighten it, force limiters let the belt play back out a little to reduce the force.
gazman Internet Connected Cars Chevrolet announced this week that they are to offer mobile data plans to its customers as data usage in cars has rocketed recently. As someone that likes to stream music in my car I am wholeheartedly in favour of this move but is it a bit excessive. Do we really need another bill for our internet usage? Gazman is weighing up the pros and cons. I remember once driving around Spain in a hire car one year and at the airport the rental guy was like do you want WiFi in your car. I looked at my kids and thought about how horrible the drive from Barcelona to Madrid was going to be with two bored kids and of course I took up his offer and for about 20bds I had internet in my car and if I could remember to charge it up I could take it to the beautiful beaches of Benidorm and have my own beach rave. It was a win win situation. The kids watched
lots of crap on YouTube. I didn’t listen to Spanish radio and my wife uploaded lots of photos to Instagram to make her friends envious. As our lives become so internet obsessed and our cars become hives of connectivity then it was only a matter of time before car manufacturers started to offer ways of making money out of this situation. Chevrolet will offer customers with new cars the 4G LTE Unlimited Data Plan for $20 (7.5bds) a month. It will now be possible to use 7 devices at once inside your car. Likewise Ford has signed a deal with Vodafone, Zain in Bahrain, to fit cars with 4G modems which can have 10 devices connected at once. It will be a lot easier than having to mess around with Bluetooth. Chevrolet says that its drivers between them used more than 4.2 million gigs of data in 2016. That’s 4.2 petabytes
for those IT geeks. That is an increase of over 200% year on year. That’s 17.5 million hours of video streamed to their various devices. No wonder we all want driverless cars. There are around 4 million 4G enabled cars in America and I am sure that it is only a matter of time before this is offered to us here in Bahrain. I suppose the only mildly negative thing I can say about that is it would be nice to have a few areas of your life where you can’t be reached by work or where the kids aren’t sitting with their heads in some form of technology but it is all just further evidence of how technology is playing a more significant part in our motoring life and how our cars are becoming more and more a technological hotspot. We had the phenomenon of working from home now it is going to be working from our cars.

Self-driving Cars Although self-driving cars may seem far off, GM has already done its own testing and some people believe that you’ll see some sort of self-driving car in showrooms in the next decade.
The idea of a self-driving car isn’t a new idea. Many TV shows and movies have had the idea and there are already cars on the road that can park themselves. But a truly self-driving car means exactly that, one that can drive itself, and they’re probably closer to being a reality than you might think. In California and Nevada, Google engineers have already tested self-driving cars on more than 200,000 miles (321,869 kilometers) of public highways and roads. Google’s cars not only record images of the road, but their computerized maps view road signs, find alternative routes and see traffic lights before they’re even visible to a person. By using lasers, radars and cameras, the cars can analyze and process information about their surroundings faster than a human can. If self-driving cars do make it to mass production, we might have a little more time on our hands. Americans spend an average of 100 hours sitting in traffic every year. Cars that drive themselves would most likely have the option to engage in platooning, where multiple cars drive very close to each and act as one unit. Some people believe platooning would decrease highway accidents because the cars would be communicating and reacting to each other simultaneously, without the on-going distractions that drivers face.

In some of Google’s tests, the cars learned the details of a road by driving on it several times, and when it was time to drive itself, it was able to identify when there were pedestrians crossing and stopped to let them pass by. Self-driving cars could make transportation safer for all of us by eliminating the cause of 95 percent of today’s accidents: human error.
Go on to the next page to learn how we may be viewing all of our car’s data in the near future. By now, we’ve all seen pictures of self-driving cars, like Google’s fleet of Priuses with freaky rigs on their roofs, or completely driverless cars, like Google’s latest cute little guy, which doesn’t even have traditional controls for humans to use. Think about this: We may someday have to explain to our grandkids what a steering wheel was. Probably at the same time we’re explaining to them why we clung to our old gasoline burning engines for so long — and that’s the reason these poor kids have never been outside the dome we all live under. But enough doom and gloom! Now is the time to get in on the ground floor of selfdriving cars with a wish list of things we’d like to see engineers and designers include in these cars before they’re fully formed.
