James Edward Thomas III, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, departed from this world on April 10, 2024. Born on October 4, 1946, in Newport News, VA, he was the cherished son of the late Mary Louise Dawson and the late James Edward Thomas II.
James received his education at Dunbar Elementary and graduated from Huntington High School in 1965. Continuing his pursuit of knowledge, he attended Norfolk State University, laying the foundation for his future endeavors.
Throughout his professional life, James exhibited dedication and excellence. He embarked on a successful career as a businessman, contributing his talents to Haynes Furniture store, Roberts Furniture, and Value City Furniture until his well-deserved retirement.
His spiritual journey began at 1st Baptist Church East End in Newport News, VA, where he received the sacrament of baptism. Later, he found a spiritual home at Gethsemane Baptist Church, where he remained a steadfast member for 30 years.
James will be remembered as a paragon of kindness, love, and generosity. His unwavering devotion to his family was evident in every aspect of his life. A true gentleman, he possessed a rare blend of warmth and courtesy, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a listening ear. His love for music and sports, particularly the Commanders and Dodgers, added vibrancy to his character. James was also known for his impeccable sense of style, often seen in his signature crisp white shirts.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 30 years, Linda D. Thomas, his children Keisha Hunter (Doniell), Tyrone Nelson (Teschia), and Christopher Nelson (Beth), as well as his nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his siblings, Javone White (Joseph) and Donald Thomas, along with numerous relatives, friends, and cherished childhood companions, Arthur “Chip” Gallope and William “Buster” Johnson.
James Edward Thomas III leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and integrity that will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him. Though he may have departed this world, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. Rest in peace, dear James, knowing that your kindness will be remembered for generations to come.
