Almighty God in His infinite wisdom called to eternal rest our beloved brother Jerome Young, Sr., 81, on June 15, 2002. He transitioned peacefully in his home surrounded by his wife, son and brother. He was born September 1, 1940 in Newport News to his parents Robert L. Young, Sr. and Catherine Brown Young. Jerome completed his early education at Paul Lawrence Dunbar Elementary School and Huntington High School, Class of 1958. After graduating from High School he enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam Era where he served at Fort Sill Military Base, Lawton Oklahoma, one of the best Army training posts and the largest field artillery complex in the free world. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he continued studies at Hampton Institute. Hampton, Virginia where they would have celebrated 59 years of marriage in October. To this union was born a beloved son, Jerome Young, Jr (Pauline) of Laurel, Maryland. Jerome retired from the Newport News Shipyard in 1998 where he amassed a set of lifelong friends, co-workers and Huntington Classmates. Included among them was the “Friday Lunch Bunch” made up of Warner Palmer, Kermit Lynch, John Brewington, Tommy Whitehead and Jerry Adkins. Then there was his “Fishing and Running Buddy”, James Dortch whom he considered a second brother. Also special among this group of friends was his neighbor, Ron Holloway who Jerome referred to as “One of God’s Dispatched Angels” who ferried him around when he was no longer able to drive. Finally there were

the three “ Young’s” his cousin John C. Young, his classmate John Young and Jerome Young. They kept a kindred spirit going as they encouraged each other throughout a lifelong friendship. Our brother Jerome was a quiet man with a gentle spirit. He loved and was committed to his family and friends. He could be unexpectedly witty and funny at times and at other times very philosophical and full of wisdom. Jerome loved music and was a part of a quartet when he was in the military that placed 3rd on an Ed Sullivan Showcase of Stars Talent Show. He also sang in the Male Chorus at Zion Baptist Church in his earlier years. In his latter years he discovered his love for cooking and writing. He became very proficient in expressing himself via texting. He was predeceased in death by his parents, Robert Luther Young, Sr. and Catherine Brown Young of Newport News, his sister’s Alberta Mae Boyd (Ellis) and Catherine Horne (Larry) of Hampton, Virginia. He is survived by his wife Theresa B. Young of Hampton, Virginia, son Jerome Young, Jr (Pauline) of Laurel Maryland, beloved granddaughter Brianna Faith Young, his brother Robert L. Young, Jr (Ann) of Goodyear Arizona, and his sister HarrietYoung White (Lee) of Fort Washington, Maryland, nephew Mabili Akinyele of Suitland, Maryland, niece Tamika Horne of Hampton, nephew Robert Emery Young (Leilani) and niece Alicia Ann Young of London England, Angela Jenkins, a longtime family friend and a host of relatives and friends.
