GROVE CITY COLLEGE
THE JAMES E. LONGNECKER COMPETITON POOL
JAMES E. LONGNECKER POOL
The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is one of the nation’s top small-college aquatic facilities. The 8-lane facility is regarded as one of the fastest pools in the region and is reserved solely for use by the College’s swimming and diving and water polo athletes. The Pool features two one-meter diving boards and one three-meter board as well as five Power Rack stations. An eight-lane electronic Colorado Timing System is integrated into the pool and scoreboard. The scoreboard features eight lines for results, three lines for event/heat and scoring and a scrolling line that shows lane-by-lane results. The shallow end of the Pool is seven feet; thus the facility is able to host several Collegiate Water Polo Association events that are restricted from “shallow-deep” pools. Since 2000, Grove City College has hosted several CWPA championship events. The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is 25 yards in length and 56 feet wide. It holds 408,913 gallons of water. The seating capacity of the Pool area is approximately 400. The Pool has been home to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships since 1990.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE
SEASON PREVIEW
SEASON PREVIEW With 14 letterwinners back in the fold, the Grove City College men's swimming and diving team will look to continue its dominance of the Presidents' Athletic Conference this winter. The Wolverines enter the 2012-13 season with five consecutive conference championships to their credit and are looking to win six straight PAC titles for the first time ever. Eleventh-year head coach Dave Fritz will rely upon a seven-man senior class this year, along with numerous other veterans, in the quest for another league championship. Grove City features depth and experience in nearly every event throughout the roster. In the sprints, senior Eric Fairchild returns after earning First Team All-PAC honors in 2012. He will likely be Grove City's top entry in the shorter freestyle events while also contributing to the relay squads. The Wolverines also welcome back two other All-PAC honorees in the senior class as breaststroker Adam Walker and backstroker Ian Smyth return. Both men earned Second Team All-PAC honors as juniors. Smyth and Walker are also candidates to bolster Grove City in the individual medley races this year. Senior butterfliers Josiah Douglas and Jon Suchin also return. Douglas emerged during the 2011-12 season and earned his second letter while Suchin is back after missing last season. Seniors Dan Henley and Matt Hess will also look to break into the lineup on a regular basis this winter. Both men will compete in the freestyle events. The Wolverines will feature a half-dozen juniors on this year's roster, including four returning All-PAC honorees. Breaststroker Louis Gabriele earned First Team All-PAC recognition after winning the conference title and setting a school record in the 200 breaststroke last season. Distance specialist Dave Bossert is the defending conference champion in the 1650 and is also a returning First Team All-PAC honoree. Meanwhile, versatile junior C.P. Dehli also earned First Team All-PAC in 2012 and is expected to again contribute in the backstroke and butterfly. Junior E.J. Leuschner will join Bossert in the distance events. Leuschner earned Second Team All-PAC recognition last year and owns two collegiate letters. Junior Noah Walker - a 2011 Second Team All-PAC selection - is also back for his third season at Grove City and will boost Grove City in the breaststroke and individual medley. Junior freestyle performer Jay Wallen will look to break into the lineup on a regular basis this season. Four sophomore letterwinners are also back for the 2012-13 season. Sophomore Jim Bossert emerged late in his rookie season and merited Second Team All-PAC recognition. He will likely be a key contributor in the backstroke and individual medley again this year while also competing in the freestyle events.
Senior Eric Fairchild is a three-year letterwinner and returning All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference First Team honoree. Like Jim Bossert, sophomore butterflier Ben Satre came on strong at the end of his freshman season and also landed on the conference's Second Team. He will again look to be one of Grove City's top butterfly entries this winter. Sophomore diver Richie Klimek joined his two classmates on the league's Second Team last year. Klimek is Grove City's most experienced diver and will contend for the conference title in both 1- and 3-meter competition this year. Sophomore Karter Gagliardo placed sixth in the conference in 1-meter diving and also scored in the 50 and 100 free swimming events. Gagliardo will likely be a dual threat again for Grove City in both swimming and diving. Second-year performers Jonathan Bernhardt, Caleb McKusick and Grant Wilt will also look to become lineup regulars this year after gaining valuable experience as freshmen. Bernhardt will compete in the breaststroke while McKusick and Wilt bolster the Wolverines in the freestyle events. Several newcomers could also break into the lineup this season. Grove City opens the season October 20 at the Clarion University Fall Classic. 6

2011-12 REVIEW
2011-12 SEASON REVIEW In future years, those examining the 2011-12 season for the Grove City College men's swimming and diving team will look at the campaign as a transition year for the program. Grove City captured its fifth straight Presidents' Athletic Conference title and earned the program's 61st straight winning season. Those two milestones help secure a fitting conclusion for one of the most decorated senior classes in recent program history. Senior Ben Bowser earned the conference's Most Valuable Performer award for the second consecutive season and concluded his career as the school record-holder in both butterfly events and both individual medleys. Bowser won conference titles in both IM races as well as the 200 butterfly. Meanwhile, senior Kirk Gagliardo swept the sprint events for the Wolverines and senior Clay Beckner won the 200 butterfly. Seniors Collin Foster and Nick Hamilton each contributed to championship relay efforts. All five of those seniors earned First Team All-PAC honors and senior Josh Kim captured Second Team All-PAC recognition. While the season represented a fitting sendoff for those seniors, the 2011-12 campaign also featured the emergence of numerous youngsters who took advantage of their opportunities to excel. Sophomore David Bossert won the conference title in the 1650 while classmate Louis Gabriele set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.11).
Senior Ben Bowser (left) receives the Presidents’ Athletic Conference’s Most Valuable Performer award from league commissioner Joe Onderko following the 2012 James E. Longnecker Invitational.

Freshman Jim Bossert, freshman Richie Klimek, sophomore E.J. Leuschner, freshman Ben Satre, junior Ian Smyth and junior Adam Walker all merited Second Team All-PAC honors after their respectively strong seasons. During the regular season, Grove City compiled another winning record despite facing one of the toughest schedules in program history. The Wolverines stood toe-to-toe with national powers Denison and Kenyon while facing Carnegie Mellon twice. Grove City stepped out of Division III competition to face the University of Pittsburgh. The Wolverines also defeated Division II foes Clarion and Gannon during the season. The Wolverines sewed up the 61st straight winning season by downing Bethany in the season finale, 63-35, February 4, 2012. Freshman Karter Gagliardo, junior Josiah Douglas, senior Matt Mahan and Klimek ignited that win by winning the meet-opening 200 medley relay. The win over Bethany gave Grove City a 4-0 conference record, marking the fourth straight season that the Wolverines went undefeated in conference dual meets. Grove City’s run to a fifth consecutive league title concluded February 16-18 at the College’s James E. Longnecker Invitational. The Wolverines bolted to a 63-point lead after the first night of action before inching the margin to 70 points by the end of Friday night’s competition. Grove City then cemented the team championship on the final night of action as four Wolverines recorded wins.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE
PROGRAM HISTORY
PROGRAM HISTORY Few swimming and diving programs can match the tradition of excellence that has developed at Grove City College since the program’s 1937 inception. With 58 all-time NCAA All-Americans, five national champions, 551 victories and 61 straight winning seasons, one can see that success is a way of life at Grove City. Yet, numbers alone do not tell the story of the Grove City men’s swimming and diving program. The program has grown from humble beginnings into one of the nation’s finest over the past 70-plus years. Intercollegiate swimming and diving at Grove City College began during the 1937-38 academic year. During the program’s first five seasons, Grove City managed just eight total wins. World War II interrupted the program for four seasons but Grove City continued to gain traction. In 1950, the Wolverines went 5-6. Two years later, head coach Jim Loveless led Grove City to its first winning season with a 6-4 mark. That season began Grove City’s current run of 59 straight winning seasons. Loveless coached the team until 1954, when Russ Weider took over. In his one season as head coach, Weider led Grove City to a 9-1 record and the school’s first PennOhio championship. Philip Sedgley coached the team to an 18-2 mark and two Penn-Ohio runner-up finishes from 1955-57. Following that season, Grove City hired a coach who would make an immeasurable impact on the swimming and diving program: Jim Longnecker. In Longnecker’s first year as head coach, 1957-58, the Wolverines went 6-5. That season, the program produced the first of its 51 all-time All-Americans as Ubbo van der Valk produced the eighth-fastest time in the nation in the 100-yard breaststroke. By 1962, Grove City emerged as the region’s preeminent program as the Wolverines went 12-0 and won the Penn-Ohio meet. That season began a run of seven straight league titles for Grove City. In 1964, Grove City hosted the first-ever NCAA College Division Swimming and Diving Championships. Grove City

Unfortunately, it would be the last time Grove City participated in the national championships for some time. Following that year, the College banned its teams from participating in postseason competition. Despite a 33-9 dual-meet record and four Penn-Ohio titles over the next four years, Grove City did not compete in the national meet, preventing several standouts from earning NCAA All-America honors. Grove City returned to the NCAA Championships in 1969, finishing 36th nationally. In 1975, after a 12-1 dual-meet record, Grove City took 13th at the inaugural Division III Championships. That marked the first of five top-20 national finishes for Grove City in the 1970s. Six years later, Grove City produced its first national champion as diver Chris Van De Mark swept both the 1and 3-meter diving titles at the 1981 NCAA meet. In 1982, Van De Mark successfully defended his 1-meter title and earned runner-up in 3-meter diving after helping the team to a 12-0 dual-meet mark. The next year, Dan Young won the NCAA 1-meter diving title and in 1984, Clark Johnson captured the 3-meter diving national title. Grove City began competition in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 1984-85 and quickly emerged as the

PROGRAM HISTORY league’s dominant program by winning eight of 11 PAC titles. The Wolverines went 10-0 in 1986-87, then assembled 40 straight victories from 1993-96. Grove City went undefeated in 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96. In Longnecker’s final season, 1996-97, Grove City went 10-2. Longnecker retired after 40 seasons with 366 wins, 44 All-Americans and 15 league titles to his credit. Following the 1997 season, 1983 Grove City grad Keith Bullion took over as head coach. During Bullion’s five years as head coach, Grove City won three league titles and went 33-17 overall.
A new era began in 2002 as 1994 alum Dave Fritz replaced Bullion as head coach. In 2006, Caleb Courage became Grove City’s first men’s swimming national champion as he won the NCAA title in the 100 free. In 2007, Courage defended his national title while teammate Tim Whitbeck won the NCAA title in the 50 free. Grove City returned to the top of the conference in 2008 as the Wolverines won their first PAC title since 2004. In 2009, Grove City repeated as conference champion and finished with a 12-2 dual-meet record. Eleven Wolverine swimmers earned NCAA All-America honors in helping Grove City finish sixth at the NCAA meet. Courage earned his third national title and set a new national mark in the 100 free with a time of 43.60. Grove City won its third straight league title in 2010 and finished with an 11-2 overall record. The Wolverines then won their fourth consecutive conference title in 2011 and finished with a 10-4 dual-meet mark. Grove City extended its conference title streak to five in 2012 as the Wolverines successfully defended their crown.
PROGRAM HISTORY Caleb Courage won three national titles in the 100 freestyle and earned 18 career All-America honors. He later qualified for the United States Olympic Trials.
Diver Chris Van De Mark won two national titles in 1981 and won the 1-meter NCAA title in 1982.

ABOUT
THE
PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
ABOUT THE PAC Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham, Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Saint Vincent first competed for conference titles in 201011. Geneva became eligible for conference titles in 2011-12. In 2014, Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University will compete for the conference’s championship in football as affiliate members. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports. AllConference status is awarded in all 19 sports. Head coaches select all-league squads for all team sports, while in individual sports such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s AllSports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in conference competition. W&J won the Men’s All-Sports Trophy in 2011-12 and Westminster won the Women’s All-Sports Trophy. In 2011-12, the league named 734 student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who attain a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE
ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE
ABOUT THE COLLEGE
The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neoGothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.
PROGRAMS AND MAJORS
Grove City College’s Breen Student Union
The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.
Grove City College 2012-2013 Tuition $7,106 per semester Room and Board $3,872 per semester

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new state-ofthe-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.
The home of Grove City’s football and track and field teams, Robert E. Thorn Field has received numerous renovations in recent years.
The James E. Longnecker Pool is one of the nation’s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES
In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms each feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
