HEAD COACH ROB SKARICICH

Rob Skaricich is in his 17th season as the head baseball coach at Grove City College. He has led Grove City to 254 wins as head coach, including a program-record 26 victories in 2006. In 2008, Skaricich led Grove City to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and the program’s first NCAA Championship Tournament appearance. Three years ago, Grove City captured the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament for the first time in program history. Grove City also won the PAC’s regular season title and finished with 25 victories. He also became the program’s all-time leader in coaching victories during the 2011 season. In 2006, Grove City earned its first-ever NCAA regional ranking. Pitcher Erik Arnesen was selected in the 17th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Washington Nationals while shortstop Mike Ritter achieved CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. In 2011, second baseman Andrew Patterson earned CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition. Under his guidance, the Wolverines have captured four PAC championships while virtually rewriting the program’s record book. In 2001, Grove City captured its first-ever conference title, finishing with a 19-10 mark. Meanwhile, the 2002 Wolverine squad picked up the program’s second straight PAC title. That year, Grove City closed the season with 13 wins in 18 games, including a win over Division II power Slippery Rock. Skaricich has earned the conference’s Coach of the Year award four times in his career. He first earned that award in 1999 after leading Grove City to a then-record 24 victories and a second-place finish in the conference. He also earned the Coach of the Year award in 2001, 2002 and 2008. Skaricich is also defensive coordinator for Grove City’s football team. In 2010 and 2012, Grove City led the conference in total defense. A native of Wickliffe, Ohio, Skaricich earned his bachelor’s degree from Hiram in 1991 and a master’s degree from Cleveland State in 1993.

ASSISTANT COACH CORY HAKE

Cory Hake is in his seventh season as an assistant coach at Grove City College. He joined the Grove City staff after spending four years as the head baseball coach at nearby Slippery Rock High School (2002-05). Hake helped the Wolverines capture the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament in 2008. In 2010, Grove City advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Southern Championship Tournament for the first time in program history. The 2011 team won the PAC regular season title as well as the ECAC Tournament crown. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College in 1994. Hake completed his master’s degree from the U.S. Sports Academy in 2000.

ASSISTANT COACH BUTCH KRIGER

A 2011 Grove City College graduate, Butch Kriger returns to the program for his second year as assistant coach. Kriger started all four years in the outfield for Grove City from 2008 to 2011. He helped lead the 2008 squad to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title and the program’s first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. As a senior, Kriger helped lead the Wolverines to the PAC regular season title and the ECAC Southern Championship Tournament. Kriger also started all four years at safety for the Grove City football team. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 2011.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

SEASON PREVIEW

2014 SEASON PREVIEW If one is looking for familiar faces on the 2014 Grove City College baseball squad, it may take a little longer than usual. The 2014 roster features 20 newcomers and a handful of holdovers under 17th-year head coach Rob Skaricich. While Grove City will field one of the youngest teams in program history, it does not mean that the Wolverines lack experience. The veteran core will help lead the way as Grove City looks to return to the Presidents' Athletic Conference's upper tier. PITCHING Two veterans return at the top of the starting rotation in senior Erick Locker and junior Mason Stephens. A right-hander, Locker led the starting staff in earned run average last year and is a three-year letterwinner. The left-handed Stephens made his collegiate debut in 2013 after missing 2012 due to injury. He made six starts last year and will look to further cement his spot at or near the top of the rotation. Grove City's bullpen also returns two veteran righthanders in junior Chris Curran and sophomore Ryan Gallagher. Curran made seven appearances as a sophomore, earning his second letter. Gallagher led the team with 12 appearances and two saves in 2013.

Junior Chris Curran is a two-year letterwinner in the Grove City bullpen. He pitched in seven games as a sophomore.

Junior Pete Garthwaite has transitioned to pitcher this season after playing several positions during his first two seasons. Several newcomers will also likely hold key roles on the pitching staff this season. INFIELD The other two members of Grove City's three-man senior class, Matt Corner and John Rende, return as incumbent starters in the infield. Corner is entering his second year as Grove City's starting third baseman while Rende is back for his second year as the Wolverines' regular second baseman. Corner hit .282 in 25 starts last season while earning his second letter. Rende started all 28 games at second base and finished with a .260 average. He led the team in plate appearances. Several candidates will battle for the vacant shortstop position. At first base, junior Reese Swatsworth will compete with a number of newcomers for the starting post. Behind the plate, several newcomers are in contention to replace graduated seniors Garrett Herald and Doug Wells.

Junior Mason Stephens returns after making six starts in 2013.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW OUTFIELD Sophomore letterwinners Kenny McCracken and Sam Quatrini headline a youthful outfield unit for Grove City this spring. McCracken saw time at DH and in the outfield as a freshman and hit .327 in 2013. Quatrini made 13 total appearances as a rookie and can play any of the three positions. Like the infield and pitching staff, newcomers will also dot the outfield throughout the 2014 season. COACHING STAFF Skaricich returns for his 17th season and is Grove City's all-time wins leader with 254. Assistant coach Cory Hake is back for his seventh season on staff while former standout Butch Kriger enters his second season. Herald, a Grove City native, has joined the staff, as has former Waynesburg standout Kyle Sasala, an AllPAC performer in 2013.

Kenny McCracken burst on the scene in 2013 by hitting .327 as a freshman. He will compete for a starting spot in the outfield or at designated hitter.

Rob Skaricich is in his 17th season as Grove City’s head baseball coach.

HALL OF FAME Six men associated with Grove City baseball have been inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ron Plano ‘60

Todd Alexander ’64

New Castle’s Ron Plano played a pivotal role in the rebirth of football and the return of baseball at Grove City College during his career from 1956 to 1960. After declining an invitation to rookie spring training from the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1957, Plano helped aid the return of baseball at the College. A 1958 meeting with College President J. Stanley Harker set the foundation for baseball’s return. With Plano pitching and patrolling the outfield, Grove City resumed play in 1959. Plano led the 1959 team in pitching wins, strikeouts and earned run average. As a senior, Plano led Grove City in hitting, home runs, runs batted in and earned run average. He earned All-West Penn honors.

Todd Alexander earned 10 letters in three sports at Grove City College from 1960-64. Alexander’s versatility came to the forefront on the baseball diamond as a center fielder and pitcher. The right arm that earned him two letters as a track thrower also served him well on the mound as he averaged a strikeout per inning during his career. As a senior, Alexander led Grove City in runs, home runs and total bases. He also led the pitching staff with a 1.48 earned run average. His combination of tools caught the eyes of major league scouts and following college, he spent one year in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Alexander capped his career at Grove City by earning Sportsman of the Year as a senior in 1964.

Steve Shilling ‘93

Jack Behringer

Michael Zeigler ‘68

Peters Township (Pa.) High School product Bart Niemeyer excelled in both baseball and basketball at Grove City College from 1958 to 1962. Grove City reactivated varsity baseball in 1959 and Niemeyer earned three letters at third base for head coach Jack Behringer. After his junior year, Niemeyer received ODK’s Sportsman of the Year. In basketball, Niemeyer led Grove City in both scoring and rebounding in his junior and senior seasons and earned All-West Penn Conference. He served as team captain both years and graduated as the second all-time leading scorer with 1,145 points.

Mike Zeigler starred in football and baseball at Grove City between 1964-67 and earned the West Penn Conference’s Most Valuable Player in both sports during the 1966-67 year. As a pitcher-infielder for the Wolverines, Zeigler posted a career 8-4 mark with a 2.37 earned run average on the mound. In 96 career innings, he surrendered just 74 hits to opposing batters. He fired a no-hitter against West Penn rival Geneva during his sophomore season. He then hit .375 as a senior shortstop, earning conference “Player of the Year” distinction. As a quarterback for the football team, Zeigler led the 1966 Wolverines to an undefeated 8-0-1 season, the first in 40 years.

OF

A native of Defiance, Ohio, R. Jack Behringer served as Grove City College’s athletic director for 40 years. He resurrected the College’s baseball program in 1959 and coached the team until 1988, finishing with 236 wins. Behringer succeeded Robert Thorn as athletic director in 1957. He helped engineer the College’s entrance into the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in 1984. He retired September 1, 1996 and passed away October 5, 2011.

HALL

A three-time All-Presidents' Athletic Conference selection at shortstop, Steve Shilling led the resurgence of Grove City's baseball program during the early 1990s. As a junior in 1992, he established a new school record by posting a .919 slugging percentage. He led the conference with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in during the 1993 season while also hitting .397. The seven home runs set a new single-season school record. A graduate of Conneaut Valley High School, Shilling concluded his career by earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.

PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Founded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges and universities - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. During the 2005-06 academic year, Chatham, Geneva and Saint Vincent all joined the PAC. Chatham competed for PAC championships for the first time during the 2007-08 academic year. Saint Vincent first competed for conference titles in 2010-11.

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neoGothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.

PROGRAMS AND MAJORS

Grove City College’s Breen Student Union

The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

Grove City College 2013-2014 Tuition $7,440 per semester Room and Board $4,054 per semester

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new state-ofthe-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of 2005. College Field also received a new press box during the summer of 2007. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
