Outside the Sandbox delivering general articles and activities
Dearest members, Welcome the infinite possibility of the season – spring horse show season! Tis a season like no other this year, as we yearn for “relaxation”, sit centered in the saddle, stare our demons straight in the eye, and feel the individual and collective love of the judges! USEF put out a COVID-19 Action Plan update this month stating: . . .the current USEF COVID-19 Action Plan remains in place for all USEF-licensed competitions. However, we are optimistic that we will be able to permit a limited number of spectators at USEF-licensed competitions by mid-May. Further updates and new protocols will be provided in the coming weeks so that organizers and spectators have time to prepare in advance. As a result, the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event April 22-25 has no spectators again so is being broadcast free on the USEF network. See details in the Eventing section. As you know, the GDCTA yearbook is just around the corner. This is where many businesses choose to advertise because people hold on to these commemorative issues of Collected Remarks. The advertising deadline is June 1st. For details, check out our media planning guide on the website: www.gdcta.org/advertise. When making your show schedule, remember that scores earned at GDCTA-hosted shows, count twice toward the awards requirements! You could qualify for dressage in one two-show weekend. Woohoo! Important Deadlines: April 26 - Rider applications due for JJ Tate Clinic (email ccaverly@comcast.net) May 3 – Entries due for Greater Atlanta Dressage Southern Dressage Show (enter at Eqentries.com) May 24 – Rider applications due for Laura Graves Clinic (email ccaverly@comcast.net) June 1 – Advertising commitments due for GDCTA Yearbook (www.gdcta.org/advertise) June 1 – Grant applications due (https://www.gdcta.org/training-grants) June 7 – Rider applications due for Jeremy Steinberg Clinic (email ccaverly@comcast.net) Recently added events: April 24: Kudzu Klinic: Learn to Scribe (https://gdcta.wildapricot.org/event-4214689) May 8-9: Anne Gribbons Dressage Clinic (https://gdcta.wildapricot.org/event-4188650) September 17-19 Dressage4Kids at the Georgia Horse Park (too new to have a link yet!) With the events we have coming up, we need volunteers! Contact Heather Askew hdraskew@gmail.com 404272-1789 or me to help us out. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference! Looking forward to seeing you all soon! Louciana TBF We found Louciana as a 4-year-old Dutch warmblood in Newnan for my daughter Lillian to grow with. I know she is young, but she is just such a special horse with an amazing temperament. The pair started to do very well together, learning how to jump and the wonders of cross country. Just a few months after she settled in, Louciana was diagnosed with an immune mediated Keratitis, requiring her to have a procedure and be off a couple of months. They are just getting back into the swing of things, and I continue to be amazed every day by what they accomplish together. ~Janet Memark

Dressage Spirit! by Susan Travis
oriented, accomplishment-loving of us, dressage is perfect—there is always a next level, always another goal and always the joy of the journey.
Dressage [dress-ahzh] Noun. The passionate pursuit of perfection by the obsessively imperfect. "Dressage...it's not like trail riding..."
Of course, other activities with horses can be just as intense and goal-oriented and have the potential to create a strong feeling of partnership and love with our horses as well. Joy is the ultimate goal of life; when we feel joy we are one with our Higher Selves, feeling the
“Life is a journey. Dressage is beating your head against a brick wall because it feels SO good when you finally stop.” True happiness comes from the joy of deeds well done, the zest of creating things new. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery
same vibration as that of our true selves. Any horse activity that brings joy— trail riding or even ground work and unmounted games— can satisfy the desire to co-create.
I couldn’t imagine not working with horses. I think if horses didn’t exist, I would have invented them. ~Klaus Balkenhol
Dressage is unique in its complexity of components, not limited to speed or greater speed to which there is a limit, as its goal. In dressage there’s no end to the possibilities of new learning and accomplishment, just layers and layers to joyfully uncover.
Joy is a net of love by which you can catch souls. ~Mother Teresa As an Intuitive Counselor, I am often asked about happiness, health, money, relationships, jobs, and pets, so when I was asked what makes some riders (including me) so drawn to dressage while others are on the other end of the spectrum, some even thinking dressage is too complicated and possibly even taxing for the horses, I was pleased to accept the opportunity to share my spiritual perspective on the matter. To accomplish this, I called upon a higher power, a force for perfection that lives within us all, that loves and supports us, and is willing to communicate with us to assist in creating the life we want to live, my Spirit Guides.
Regardless of discipline, when you and your horse have joy in your work, you will have achieved everything. Enjoy the ride!
About Susan Travis: A life-long dressage enthusiast and horsewoman, Susan Travis is dedicated to making only the strongest connections with her clients – human and animal, alike.
My Spirit Guides tell me that this is a time of co-creation on earth, that each of us has learned through many life experiences how to create individually (although it so often feels as if we don’t know), but now we strive to create as like-minded, or like-vibration, human spirits here on earth together–not by accident!
Wherever you find yourself on your journey, take the time to reflect on what matters most to you. Ask yourself, am I aligned with my desires and purpose? If not, now is the time to create the foundation to reach those goals. Susan is available to offer the insight and clarity you need.
For those who love horses, or any animals for that matter, co-creating with them is a perfect place to start the co-creation learning process. Other human partners can be so opinionated, (as can we), and divergent opinions staunchly defended can make co-creation seem like an uphill battle. Dressage offers the benefits of co-creation without the sometimes-intense struggle we experience with other people. Horses, as a rule, are very willing to work with their partners, strive to please, and unless they are in pain, are quite agreeable about

My First CDI by Maribeth Hebert
I am a USDF bronze medalist, FEI junior rider, and VP of Dressage for the GDCTA Youth Committee. This past month I competed in my first CDI (Concours de Dressage International) on my gelding, Florieux (Flori), and the Global showgrounds in Wellington, Florida. I got Flori last October through the dressage4kids horse dotation program. This was my first ever CDI and Flori’s first in the United States. Each year Global puts on 12 shows from the first of January to the end of April including the Nations Cup, the Palm Beach Derby, and the Florida International Youth Dressage Championships (FIYDC), which is the event I competed in this season. FIYDC is held each year during the Palm Beach Derby to allow the top youth riders in Florida to compete and get to know one another. We made the decision to compete in a CDI since Flori already had his passport and it was my second season at FEI Juniors. Going into this CDI my hope was to get a good experience in the larger atmosphere riding for international judges before hopefully competing at NAYC this fall as a member of the Region 3 JR team. Due to Covid- 19, the classes were smaller but never did I imagine I would win my first FEI Junior CDI!
If you are ever considering entering a CDI, do it! It is totally worth the experience, especially in Florida. Just do not go into it with any expectation of placing or winning. Go in for the experience and set small personal goals for yourself such as scoring a 63% or even just a clean test! I am so excited to be competing in another CDI at Tryon, where the World Equestrian Games (WEG) was held in 2018, April 22nd- 25th of this year.
Riding in a CDI is truly an experience like no other. The atmosphere is much larger and you are constantly surrounded by some of America’s best riders. The main international arena surrounded by spectator tables and beautiful flowers and judge’s boxes. In a CDI you can ride in front of three to five judges that are 1* to 5***** judges depending on the class and level of CDI. Flori and I ended up scoring up to a 66% average and even earned a 69% from one judge on our freestyle. We definitely had a lot of nerves throughout the weekend but our scores constantly improved each day even with a couple of errors on the judge’s part. At the end of the weekend, Flori and I ended up FEI Junior Champion for the CDI, FIYDC, and FEI Junior High point for FIYDC.

They had hoped to host clinic around August of this year so they could have it before Championships, however, will likely not have funds by then. Several recommendations for locations as well as potential clinicians were made. Thinking about potentially doing raffle baskets but concerned about putting more into it then they can get out of it. • Grants (Janie): The applications are working on the website but there are some glitches so she is working on it with June. • Education (Julie): Clinic schedule is set. Caren reports Anne Gribbons is scheduled for May 8 and 9th. Caren motioned to accept the budget for the Anne Gribbons clinic. Joanne seconded. Motion Approved. Caren sent out revised budget for Laura Graves budget. Caren motioned to accept the Laura Graves budget, Danielle seconded. Discussion regarding different number of auditors between the two clinics. Motion approved.

A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Joanne Morse, Ashley Boyd, Abigail Kroupa, Carol Tresan, Peter West, Liz Molloy Heather Askew, Janie Pride, Julie Shannon, Jen Scherrens, and Danielle Perry were present. Guests included Mary Lou Freil and Phoebe McNeely. The minutes of the regular meeting for February 15, 2021, were emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Corrections were made. Abi motioned to approve the minutes and Liz seconded. Motion approved. Treasurer’s Report – (Peter) Membership renewals are up.
Old Business Email Blasts (Caren): Spring Fling Show, Grants, save the date Dressage4Kids Sept 17-19th at Horse Park.

New Business
VP Combined Training – (Joanne) Will have budget for Kim Severson clinic. Will be at Starting Point Farm, with a covered arena and large field for cross country jumping. Melissa Town owner of Starting Point Farm would like to not charge a facility fee in exchange for collaboration from the GDCTA with what she is doing with Bear Creek and upcoming events.
Arena usage (Caren): Arena storage: Stored at Beanie Crowe’s facility. They have asked if they can rent one arena from us for clinics and shows. Board discussed rental for exchange in reduction of price for storage. If any damage were done to the arena they would replace them.
Committee Reports

• Membership Report (Mary Lou): We had a lot of people join last month, 73 total. Close to what we had in April of last year. Caren asked about members who have not joined and whether there is something set up to notify them. Mary Lou replied that June has it set up to send out emails to members the day they need to renew, and then send several reminders after that. • Communication (Joanne): June is finishing up the newsletter. Next newsletter is April 15th. June said members are opening the emails that are sent out. June 1st is the deadline to have everything in for yearbook. • Show Committee (Julie): nothing to report • Finance (Peter): Nothing to report. Caren reported that GumBits is doing a large sponsorship. • Youth Program (Joanne): Nothing to report from Joanne. Phoebe joined to share about free clinic they
