MEN’S FASHION 3

Introduction MANDALIQUIN is our take on modern day fashion merged with the Buddhism style of art, mandalas. Our inspiration originating from the Buddhist religion, is not a dig at their culture but merely a way to convey our idea in their unique and recognizable style of art. For us, fashion is a religion, a belief. Our aim is to make a political statement about fashion and all it has to offer. It has a big impact on society and evolves so rapidly that it is almost impossible to keep up to date. Some fads, however, come back bigger than ever and it looks like they’re here to stick around. So in saying this, we’ve taken aspects from the industry ranging from fashion to jewellery and put our own spin on it. Anyone from anywhere with any style or flavour can feel apart of our fashion religion that is ‘Mandaliquin’.

Editors Note Mandaliquin is a creation of the idea that fashion is a religion. Likened like various religions fashion can dictate how a person dresses, their beliefs and a changes a person’s way of thinking. Our target is to develop this idea further by combining Buddhism tradition with the contemporary fashion world. How we strive to achieve this notion is to create collaged mandalas made up of the multiple sections of fashion and create thought provoking images. Through this technique we aspire to challenge the audience’s idea of fashion becoming a religion and focus that fashion is realistically skin deep.

love yourself. When looking into a person’s eyes you see straight to their soul, you see who they truly are and take away their exterior. It’s the idea that you can view a person’s life experience and obtain an understanding of them by looking into their eyes. Buddhism teaches that souls are reincarnated into everybody. They believe the soul is given to the body and it becomes a vessel inhabited by the mind and spirt and they make no distinction between them, they are seen as one entity. It is this idea of the mind and body being one that in current society is broken down. The majority of the population make massive distinctions between the mind and the body. They perceive body as more important than the mind and internally harm their soul with negative thoughts of their perceptions of their appearance.

Exercise? Don’t you mean Accessorize? The first step to becoming a fashionista is accessories. Without a good collection of accessories, we are safe to say that we have a minimal fashion sense, we know that accessories are a significant part of an outfit. Accessories not only complete your look but it can add a dash of colour, compliment your features as well as your outfit and overall make you look and feel amazing! Whether it be a nice pair of heels, a watch, handbag, scarf, sunglasses, bangles or a necklace accessory will complete your look helping you not appear boring and dull, after all wearing accessories with your outfit is a part of the fashion religion. Accessories can change the way we are perceived by others, a good combination of accessories with an outfit can make others see you as stylish, wearing accessories can also add a dash of colour to a plain outfit like for example red accessories with a black dress works well with adding colour to your look. Many women wear accessories without even realizing, wearing a hand bag, fashionable shoes, bangles sunglasses are all accessories we wear without even noticing while other women take a while deciding on what hand bag they should wear to complement their outfit or what heels would match their outfit, those women follow the fashion religion and take time in their everyday routine to abide by the bible of fashion. Although clothing makes up most of an outfit, accessories are much more significant than you may think.

With a wide variety of accessories, you are able to create a million different looks with the outfits you already own. The more accessories you own the more options of outfits you have to wear. Both accessories and clothing have an equal significance in creating the overall look of your outfit, as we follow the fashion bible we are able to create looks which expresses our own personalities through creating styles which really show who you are. You are able to create different styles of outfits for different occasions just by simply changing the accessories that go with the outfit, this shows how significant accessories really are in the religion of fashion. Another plus about owning loads of accessories is that they take up less space in your wardrobe compared to owning loads of different outfits, with the option of many different accessories we are able to present ourselves and our style in many different ways, they are able to define us and show others just who you really are by the way we accessorize. The religion of fashions shows that we are not limited to only clothing and that accessories are important to help to define our outfit and our overall style, each women utilizes accessories in a different way, some love handbags more than anything else and some may love heels more but no matter what those women who follow the religion of fashion have a wide variety of accessories to create stunning looks with, these women are true fashionistas.

beauty is in the eye of sephora Make-up is not a tool meant to make an ugly thing beautiful, it is only meant to magnify the beauty that already exists. A quote that perfectly describes how women all over the world feel when they grab that brush and create a masterpiece. In today’s society and modern day living, make-up has a massive impact on how we present ourselves to the world. Some people may see it as a necessity and others as a hobby. However we can all agree that painting our faces with well developed products has evolved rapidly in the last few years. There are thousands upon thousands of products on the market today, accommodating for all cultures and skin types, giving everyone an equal chance to express themselves however they want. For most people it becomes part of their routine and without it, it’s like a foreign language. But the language of self expression is one language that all make-up lovers can speak.

make-up isn’t about rules

it’s about options

There are more than 7 billion people in the world today, speaking more than 5,000 different languages. This doesn’t stop anyone from communicating with each other, even if it is through make-up and their high leading brands. Women all over the world are constantly pushing the boundaries of make-up, especially in their cultures. Certain countries and religions have specific make-up that represents them and their beliefs, thus allowing make-up to be a fashion religion in itself. For instance, in Japan their beauty look is a little bit more eccentric—they love the doll-like face, wearing color contacts, and applying fake lashes daily instead of on special occasions. Where as Indian women are loving what they call Sweet and Sour Eyes—a pastel colored eyeshadow on the lid with a strong contrasting eyeliner in green, electric blue or pink. It’s modern and a way to express their love for colour through their make-up. Both ways are bold and refreshing, but at the same time highlight something unique within their culture. So many cultures use make-up in different ways to extenuate their already bright and vibrant fashion statements. Each culture seems to focus on what they feel is most important to showcase, some eyes and others cheekbones. With make-up artists combining the art of makeup with clothing and accessories, they are constantly experimenting new ways to make fashion as outrageous as it can be. The bolder the fashion statement, the more memorable it becomes.

Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend ... An item of jewellery can have a sentimental meaning or can be a symbol with a strong significance, such as a wedding band. It can have personal importance, look visually appealing or just be worn because a women loves jewellery. Jewellery can be given as a gift, given at engagements or weddings, or even just bought for yourself. Cultures such as, Indian or Middle Eastern give mainly gold Jewellery to the bride. It is a tradition to shower the bride with excessive amount of gold and silver as her gift of getting married. It is then judged by who gave the best and most expensive jewellery. It is seen that if the jewllery isnt top of the range it is then worthless. Many women of this generation see jewellery as a very important aspect of fashion. They follow it as if it is a section in their relgion that has a high significance. They believe they need to have the finest and newest collections, and the best brands such as Tiffany and Co. Jewellery is what finalizes an outfit for a women, on a night out. Each outfit must have matching colored jewellery, and ensure whether gold or silver works better with a specific colored top. This is vital in a womens wardrobe. Her jewelery box is like the check of list ensuring she is following her

fashion religion correctly, and finalizing the outfit to perfection. Jewellery is hugely loved by many women when received as a precious gift from her lover. It is something about women, they love bragging about the gifts they received from their partner. Its all about the diamonds, how many karats and how much it was worth. A women waits for the day her another half or soul mate gets the chance to propose to her. The proposal is a major event although, whats even bigger is the ring itself. Is it diamonds? How many karat? Is it gold or silver? How big is it? These are all questions that run through a womens mind before she even glances at the ring that will signify her fiancÊe for the rest of her life. This ring then becomes everything to her relationship, almost like the bible of her relationship and the fashion religion she follows. As this is the scenario, this piece of jewelery needs to be the ring of her dreams. There are many humble women out there who don’t look at the cost side of things. These women wear cheaper jewelery to visually show who they are as an individual. This could be from pieces with bright colors, feathers or even beading or pearls

45

These mandals visually represent the cirular stages of a womens fashion life with jewlery. It visually shows the love a women has for her jewlery and that each item of jewlery has a strong meaning to her. Just like mandalas having a strong significance to many religions and signifying a never ending notion of life,

46

fashion and jewlery is also a never ending notion in a womens life. It is what she follows each day she wakes up. Contanstly repeated and never forgotten. Each women has her individual style of jewlery, which is her relgion that she follows with the bigger picture of fashion as the full relgion.

Fashion: Religion of the Modern World Fashion is now a religion! One does not need to look very far to find out that many do in fact worship fashion. Many openly declare it. “Fashion is a Religion; Vogue is the Bible.” Others reveal it in their appearance. Can a religious devotant worship Fashion and their God at the same time? One writes: “ Many Christians’ beliefs about modesty are also continually at odds with current dictates of fashion and the mass media.” Let us ask, Who is behind it all? How is Fashion established? A website defining how fashion works explains: “Working five or six months ahead of the season, the press attends fashion shows presenting designer collections; the media will then give editorial coverage to trends they think their readership is interested in. Store buyers work many months in advance of the season to place orders with manufacturers for styles they think their customers will want to buy. Celebrities and other opinion leaders (socialites and other glitterati) are usually the

first to sport new looks, spurring the buying public into accepting emerging trends. So everyone from big-name designers to celebrities may be behind influencing the direction fashion will go in.” So, fashion designers originate the style, it is modeled at fashion shows and then promoted by the media, then it goes to the stores, and the celebrities spur on the buyers. But who really is behind all of this? Who is directing these people? Think about these fashion trends starting around the early 1900s. Hemlines started rising and lowering quickly. People weren’t used to the idea of seeing an immodest fashion, so it was retracted from society to ease the troubled conscience of society. The next time around, it was more readily accepted. If you take a look at the fashions over the years, you will see this played out many times. A daring fashion appears, with much flesh revealed, then a more modest fashion follows it. However, each time the

51

52

53

fashions cycle through this change, the modest cycle is more immodest than the previous cycle. But because it is much more modest than the daring fashion that preceded it, nobody seems to notice. Remember the miniskirt of the 1960s. Now, that was a shocking fashion if there ever was one! The vast majority of the young girls in society obediently accepted it. But then it went out of style. So now skirts were more modest. But what happened was that every one who had accepted the miniskirt were primed to accept other scandalous fashions as the years rolled on. The focus of revealed body parts shifts as the fashions change. Short skirts give way to longer skirts, but then bare backs, shoulders, or midriffs appear. Then the emphasis is on tight, with flashing slits which can be more tantalizing than mini skirts. The midriffs disappear and the low rise tight jeans appear. Now it seems the plunging necklines are everywhere
