As with much progressive thinking, what can initially be seen as science fiction, wishful thinking or plain fantasy, quite regularly turns into a tangible reality. For example, Industry 4.0 is one of the new frontiers for furniture manufacturing. The majority will have witnessed inter-connected, computerised machinery allied to robots and autonomous vehicles assisting with repetitive and/or dangerous tasks, plus artificial intelligence to optimise situations without human intervention – and few manufacturers will disagree that it has and will continue to have a significant impact on the way furniture is produced. Of course, initially this will apply to larger scale operations focused on panel production scenarios where it has long been an achievable and highly-prized efficiency target. But also Industry 4.0 should be seen as a lucrative opportunity to utilise industry-specific technologies to drive an operation forwards from modest to something more.

In this issue, we look back on the compelling Surface Design Show in London last month and forward to the innovation -led Xylexpo event in Milan in May. Looking at events beyond our control, the hysteria surrounding Coronavirus is causing a number of trade events to be delayed, notably Holz-Handwerk-FensterbauFrontale in Nuremberg and iSaloni in Milan – hopefully the situation will improve in time for the popular Xylexpo event in Milan-Rho for 26-29th May. Mirka unites with abrasive manufacturers for sustainability Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to sustainability, Mirka is joining the new European programme focused on sustainability called SEAM – Sustainable European Abrasive Manufacturers. The initiative is designed to drive forward the industry’s pledge to implement new sustainability measures for the long term. The objective of the SEAM programme is to support and assist abrasive manufacturers in their aim towards sustainable growth and sustainability improvements, mostly in production and distribution. To be approved onto the programme, Mirka had to meet a series of requirements organised into the three fundamental pillars of sustainability: environment, labour and economy.

“Long-term sustainable development has always been an important and natural part of Mirka’s business,” says Stefan Sjöberg, CEO of Mirka Ltd. “We have accomplished a great deal already. Being sustainable is an integral part of our vision: to be the most responsible company in our industry. For us, it has always been clear not to waste financial or material resources – of our own or those of our customers. “These initiatives and achievements are compiled under ‘Our Clean Commitments’ where we describe the development of our corporate sustainability programme transparently with various KPIs. Harrison Spinks commercial director to run marathon for charity Ruairi Giles, commercial director of bed manufacturer Harrison Spinks, is putting his best foot forward for The Furniture Makers’ Company by taking part in the 2020 Virgin Money London Marathon. The event, which takes place on Sunday 26th April, will see around 40,000 people run 26.2 miles around the nation’s capital, with thousands of well-wishers and supporters flocking to London to line the streets and cheer on the runners. The route starts south of the Thames at Blackheath before crossing Tower Bridge around mile 12. After taking a not-so brief detour through Canary Wharf and the City of London, the race draws to a close outside Buckingham Palace.

Ruairi says: “I started my training first week of January and hope to reach the finishing line at St James’s Park in 16 weeks’ time. As an active member of the furnishing industry, I plan on involving my colleagues, customers and suppliers to help raise as much as possible.”

College students earn their shirts with Dickies International workwear brand Dickies is working with colleges across the country to help instil pride in construction students and apprentices through its Earn Your Shirt campaign. Students on construction-related courses at participating colleges are receiving t-shirts from Dickies featuring motivational hashtags relating to their chosen career path as they progress with their courses. AXYZ router boosts production at Scottish design and build specialist The installation of a Z7 series CNC router supplied by AXYZ Automation Group has helped boost production at East Lothian, Scotland-based Old School Fabrications. Established in 2011, the company specialises in a wide range of bespoke design and build projects involving the use of various traditional and contemporary materials. These include primarily solid oak for commercial furniture with routed detailing, birch plywood for customised exhibition stands

and furniture, solid surface interactive museum stations and architecturally-sensitive sculptural objects for indoor and outdoor locations. Described as an ideal entry-level routing/cutting solution for small companies and in particular those wishing to increase the level of automation without the need for a sizeable capital investment, the Z7 includes production-enhancing features normally found on more expensive CNC machines, thereby providing a production workhorse

with a high cost-to-performance capability. In addition to the familiar solid steel frame construction to accommodate the most vigorous routing/cutting likely to be encountered and a solid aluminium vacuum/clamping deck for maximum material hold-down efficiency and routing/cutting accuracy, the Z7 installed at Old School Fabrications includes the latest AXYZ A2MC machine controller. This enables smoother and faster machine motion, with the elimination of ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration/deceleration frequently experienced with less technically advanced machine control systems. Key design features of the Z7 include a processing area of 1524mm x 2440mm, a single-head tooling configuration and rack and pinion drive system on both the X and Y axis. As with all AXYZ CNC routers, the Z7 can be customised with a number of optional production tools for enhanced performance. These include the AXYZ ATC

(Automatic Tool Change) system that provides up to 33 tool-change stations for work requiring multiple tools, the AXYZ Zone Management facility for optimum material hold-down efficiency and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system incorporating a multiple gear teeth configuration. This provides a more even distribution of the workload, leading to faster throughput speeds, reduced material wastage and machine wear and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. Commenting on the contribution made by the Z7 router to business growth at Old School Fabrications, Director Neville Rae stated: “We were immediately impressed by how simple and well made the Z7 router was and how it fitted perfectly with our increased production objectives and bespoke manufacturing requirements. Northern skills conference to help furnishing businesses access funding for employee training A second Closing the Gap conference promoting how companies can access funded training for upskilling staff and apprenticeship programmes is taking place later this month in the north of England. The half-day conference, organised by the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA), will be held on 18th March at the Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford. The event will provide an overview of the current situation for both levy and non-levy paying businesses and follows the government’s recent announcement of plans for a new points-based immigration system, meaning businesses must consider

how they will recruit, train and retain their staff. Delegates will get to hear from leading manufacturers that will provide case-studies on how they have made an apprenticeship process a core part of their businesses, detail the benefits that this has brought to their businesses, and highlight the potential issues that may need to be overcome. Arnold Laver opens the door to a brighter future Leading timber specialist, Arnold Laver, has significantly strengthened its doorset manufacturing capabilities, following the acquisition of the assets of Cotswold Manufacturing. Arnold Laver, part of The National Timber Group, has now started the integration of its latest production facility, located in Thornaby, near Stockton-on-Tees. The business will be branded as Arnold Laver and will form part of its new Intelligent Door Solutions Division. The modern, 80,000 sq ft manufacturing facility specialises in producing timber fire and acoustic doors, doorsets and screens that are used throughout the UK, in the commercial, residential, education and leisure markets. David Oldfield, director of joinery

at Arnold Laver, said: “This latest investment has strengthened our position as an industry leader in the UK timber doorset market and gives our customers more choice than ever before. Techsil acquire adhesive supplier Glueline Adhesive and sealant supplier Techsil has announced that it has acquired Essex based adhesive stockists and distributors Glueline Ltd. Ironmongery Direct supports womens’ refuge A local domestic abuse charity working in South and South West Essex, has received a £1,000 cheque from local merchant and online ironmongery supplier, Ironmongery Direct. Working across the South Essex and Thurrock, Changing Pathways provides free and confidential support and services to women subjected to domestic abuse and other forms of inter-personal violence. The money was raised from a staff raffle at Ironmongery Direct, following its donation of food and gifts at Christmas to the charity. Managing director, Marco Verdonkschot, presented a cheque to Natasha Jean-Louis, Operations Manager from the charity, at

Ironmongery Direct’s trade counter and head office in Basildon. Marco said: “We are a national supplier, but our heart is very much in Essex so it’s important to us that we help local charities wherever we can. “Changing Pathways offers so

much to the local community, working tirelessly to protect, save and rebuild the lives of women and children in the area who are sadly suffering, so we are pleased this cheque can help make a difference.”

Surface Design Show 2020 inspires with the best in surface innovations The 2020 edition of the Surface Design Show, which took place at London’s Business Design Centre in February, was an impressive affair with more surface material and architectural lighting designs than ever before. Over 170 exhibitors showcased the best in surface design, with nearly 5000 architects, designers and specifiers visited over the duration of the popular event. With a focus on the trending topic of ‘Close to Home … Locally Sourced’, the show looked beyond aesthetics and into manufacturer’s impact on the environment, from the processes used in mining or manufacture, through to the carbon footprint sustained during sales and distribution.

Over the course of the show there was a schedule of discussions and talks including the ever-popular opening night debate supported this year by RIBA and Architextural and the lively PechaKucha evening, which was hosted by Chris Dyson of Chris Dyson Architects. Co-located within Surface Design Show was the Light School which educated visitors of the importance of the relationship between light and surface by bringing together leading manufacturers and suppliers with architects and designers looking to specify their products. A highlight of Light School was its stand-out seminar programme – Light Talks; a series of sessions collated by the Institution of Lighting Professionals. The new Light Talks theatre was

designed by Rebecca Weir’s Lightbout.iQ. The design featured a range of surface materials creatively lit to emphasise the essential link between light and materials. As well as established brands, Surface Design Show is committed to supporting and promoting up-and-coming designers in the materials sector with its New Talent section which was expanded for 2020. Curated by chief creative director at Trendease International Jennifer Castoldi, the New Talent area allowed designers, who have been in the industry five years or less, to have a devoted exhibition area, giving them the opportunity to showcase and engage face to face with a hard to reach and targeted audience. The 32 New Talents included That’s Caffeine, a start-up that creates products from waste coffee grounds and knitted textile specialist Charlotte Clayton. “Exhibiting at New Talent has given me great networking opportunities. I have engaged in many discussions regarding the Trifold system as well as the world of design with a range of industry experts. This has allowed me to expand

To top it all off, Trifold was awarded the New Talent Award at the Surface Design Awards” explained Trifold’s Hannah Davis. Launched six years ago the Surface Design Awards has become an integral part of the show, growing in stature to become one of the most respected accolades in the design awards realm. The 2020 Awards had over 100 entries from 12 countries including as far afield as America, India and Australia. There were 14 categories in total, from Retail and Public Building to Commercial Projects and Housing, including new categories Public Realm and Affordable Housing. The entries comprised the best in architecture and design from across the globe; Giles Miller Studio, Mikhail Riches and Chris Dyson Architects from the UK, Steven Holl Architects from the USA, and Kris Lin International Design from China were among those shortlisted.

The impressive Krushi Bhawan from Bhubaneswa, India by Studio Lotus was named the Supreme Winner, as well as winning the Public Building Interior and Public Building Exterior categories. Capturing the admiration of all the judges Krushi Bhawan is a testament to design, created for the Odisha State Government’s Agriculture Department in India. Elcon vertical panel saw increases efficiency at modular housing manufacturer Engineers of innovative modular systems, Stelling Properties, was looking for a vertical panel saw to increase efficiency across its operation at Stelling Modular – its rapidly growing modular housing department. After speaking with the team at Daltons Wadkin about its specific requirements, the Elcon 155DS vertical wall saw was the ideal solution.

Modular housing is a revolutionary approach to sustainable, environmentally-friendly and economically efficient homes. We spoke to production line manager, Colin Anderson, who explained: “We started looking at vertical panel saws because we wanted to increase our efficiency and also address some key safety concerns.” Stelling’s previous plunge saws and hand-held circular saws had never let them down, but it was time to upgrade. Following discussions with Daltons Wadkin about

the best solution for their cutting requirements, Stelling Modular attended an in-house demonstration and were immediately impressed by the Elcon DS LIMPIO. The patented and award-winning LIMPIO system from Elcon greatly reduces dust emissions by simultaneously extracting waste from both the front and rear of the panel. The saw blade runs in an almost completely enclosed area reducing dust emission values to less than 0.5 mg/m3. Available as an option for the Elcon DS, DSX and TITAN models, the LIMPIO system is particularly advantageous when cutting large volumes of fibrous or cementitious material minimising airborne waste entering the operating area. Nine months since the Elcon DS vertical panel saw was installed at Stelling Modular, Colin told us they have seen an exceptional increase in productivity. He explained to us that in each of the modules that

they make there is a fully equipped bathroom, and each bathroom requires a shower frame to be made. These shower frames were previously made with a plunge saw, and one operative could make perhaps eight or nine of these in a day. Colin was very proud to inform us that with the new vertical panel saw they have seen around a 50% increase in productivity, and one operative can now make around 16 frames per day using the Elcon. New technology can appear challenging to some machinery operators, however the Elcon DS is made to be as user friendly and safe as possible. Colin was pleased to say that: “the operators find it

incredibly easy to use, and the digital read outs make everything self-explanatory”, Colin continued: “I would certainly recommend an Elcon wall saw. It’s increased our efficiency in pretty much everything that we do”. Bespoke kitchen and furniture maker starts its CNC journey in a Sirius fashion With backgrounds in cabinetmaking and furniture design, Simon Lewis and Gordon Hill founded Lewis & Hill in 2013 to design and manufacture kitchens and bespoke interiors. In August last year, the business took its first steps into CNC machining with the acquisition of an AES Sirius 950M boring and drilling machine, supplied by J & C O’Meara. John Legg visited to find out more... As with many a successful partnership, the Lewis & Hill story began when the two first met as client and customer, Simon was working as an apprentice. But prior to this meeting, Simon had started out by creating furniture for his own use, with his joiner grandfather keeping a close eye on proceedings. This passion for cabinetmaking was driven by Simon navigating his way through four house restorations in quick succession. To hone his bench skills further, Simon embarked on cabinet- and furniture-making courses before starting as an apprentice at a local four-man co-operative workshop, which is where he and Gordon first met. One day Gordon came into the workshop and asked if the

team could manufacture a kitchen – from what was an unusually highquality set of drawings. As it transpired, Gordon’s background was in furniture design, and his parents’ family business had also been in retail design – so the pair thought there might be something there. It seemed a natural fit, and they soon agreed to try to set something up together – thus in 2013, Lewis & Hill was launched, albeit from humble beginnings in a domestic garage. Since then, the business has grown up through three further workshop moves into its current premises, a 6000ft2 manufacturing and showroom facility in Rearsby, Leicestershire. The company’s clients range from individuals with a mid-£20k kitchen

budget, through a kitchen, utility, boot-room deal, maybe with dining room and a fitted office or library, to a whole home remodel or a ‘Grand Designs’ style improvement and renovation. A big selling point for the business is its showroom at the workshop, where clients can see many of the finished styles and options, and also meet the maker working on their product and witness the production first-hand. The workshop is business-like, a large open space with offices to one side and an area giving way to where most of the production is situated, on a generous mezzanine. The facility is very well maintained, extremely tidy and has an air of calm efficiency. Simon explains that business levels, at the time of my visit in

October last year, were up on the previous year, with September being their record month to date. He also confirmed that business is of course variable in furniture and cabinetmaking, with demand easing over the June-August period. A large proportion of the company’s work comes from referrals from existing clients, architects and developers which Lewis & Hill has worked with over the years. Another solid area for enquiries is via the company’s website, and some also from the trade shows the company exhibits over the year, primarily the Homebuilding & Renovating Show. The team also regularly visits the W Exhibition to research new materials and equipment, and this is where the Lewis & Hill team first

met Carl O’Meara’s company, J & C O’Meara, in 2016. At first they were researching sanders and were looking over the impressive Kündig options on the stand, but that was too much for their budget on that occasion. They were also looking at panel saws, and, having seen other premium brands at the event, realised that Carl’s own-label Genisis variant was fundamentally very similar for a surprisingly smaller outlay – an order was duly placed, and has provided sterling service ever since its installation in early 2017. Simon says that he and his team got on really well with Carl and his colleagues, creating a really positive relationship. “From the outset, Carl and his team have given us a high level of personal service,” says Simon, “from initial enquiry through installation, training and any aftersales issues, the whole process has been very straight forward, a real pleasure.” At the head of a growing

business, Simon and Gordon are always exploring ways of creating a more efficient production process, so the duo began to think about small CNC machines to improve consistency and workflow. The company returned to the W Exhibition in 2018 and assessed the options with three manufacturers. One machine from a well-known supplier seemed to fit the bill in terms of capability and output, but its 3m height, plus overhead ducting, meant that Lewis & Hill’s facility, with its substantial wraparound mezzanine, would have to significantly rearrange the workflow layout to accommodate it. This was not ideal, and added to the base-cost. Also the extra training package and support package added up to make the financial and logistical costs simply too high. In the meantime, Simon checked out alternative options. In the final hour of the 2018 show, Simon

caught sight of a CNC machine – an AES Sirius 950M – on the J & C O’Meara stand, and quickly had an introduction from one of the team. Even though everyone was tired, Simon needed to establish some basics about this option. “I said to the guy, who was trying to be helpful, but had clearly endured a long, hard day, that I needed it to do this, this, this and this,” recalls Simon. “He said he wasn’t entirely sure, and that Carl was busy. But he went away and spoke to some AES people who were on the stand, and they gave him pretty much all the confirmation I was looking for.” With a few questions outstanding, Simon followed up with Carl and went to Burscough, Lancashire to view the machine and assess whether it would indeed meet the company’s requirements. “We had a full demo, we went through the details and thought it was ideal,” says Simon. “Carl put me in touch with a finance company, we partfinanced it ourselves, which was all very straight forward.” Two members of the Lewis & Hill team, Trevor Barnacle and Connor Garner then went to J & C O’Meara and were given three days’ practical training with an engineer and with Software Applications Engineer John Edmondson for Alphacam training as well – all part and parcel of the J & C O’Meara package. The Sirius was delivered in the summer of 2019 and Carl and an AES engineer came down to commission it. A further day and a half of training on-site also followed. CNC technology at all, so such a professional handover by Carl and his team was a real boon and really helped the company fully get to grips with its new technology. Previously, boring and drilling tasks were naturally carried out by hand, complete with the obvious time it took and inconsistency to a lesser degree. The AES Sirius 950M is proving a big hit with both Trevor, a highly-experienced joiner, and Connor – a younger employee who came through the company’s apprenticeship scheme, whose mind is perhaps more attuned to life with computers. Both are appreciating their new technology and now wouldn’t be without it. Most importantly, the new machine is also helping Lewis & Hill develop a better, more streamlined cabinetmaking scenario, whereby the internals of standard kitchen cabinets can be executed more effectively – this being one of the key drivers to purchasing the machine. Other components which are produced in small batches will likely also be taking advantage of the Sirius’ capability. At the time of my visit, the machine had only been installed four weeks prior, yet already Trevor was singing its praises, saying: “Although it was only delivered late on in August, we can already appreciate the capability and potential of the machine – and so far, although it’s a bit of a learning curve, it’s a great machine and is going to make a big difference to our production capability.” 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery. co.uk

Daniel’s Amish Collection cuts production time by 50-75% with Cabinet Vision nesting and custom-programming tools Honouring traditional craftsmanship while juggling modern manufacturing demands is all in a day’s work for brothers Leroy and Lewis Yoder of Daniel’s Amish Collection. “We take great pride in the work that we do,” said plant manager Lewis Yoder. “Even though we have CNC machinery, we do use older techniques and everything is still assembled and stained by hand. Our goal is always to make sure that we get a great product to the customer.” Established more than 20 years ago in Mount Eaton, Ohio, by their uncle, Daniel, the family’s business uses modern technologies, including the Cabinet Vision Screen-to-Machine (S2M) Center, to produce the kind of high-quality furniture for which the Amish are renowned. “We have 200 employees, so teamwork is a big thing here and our company is outstanding in that everyone pitches in and makes it a great, team-oriented workforce,” said Leroy Yoder, who manages the daily production schedule for Daniel’s Amish Collection. Daniel’s Amish Collection initially made all of its products by hand, but with success came exponential growth and the need to implement technology that could both keep up with demand and standardize quality. “Daniel’s Amish started with Daniel Yoder making small crafts in a small 10ft2 buggy garage. In the next 10 years, it grew into producing a goose-neck trailer full of furniture in a 20,000ft2 facility and, within five more years, to a 125,000ft2 facility in Killbuck, Ohio,

producing two to three semi-truck loads per day. Obviously, we had to quickly change from making everything by hand with a table saw and a chop saw because we went from making 10 pieces a day to 200.” Daniel’s Amish purchased Cabinet Vision in 2011, having quickly identified the need to implement a solution that could mass-produce cut lists and boost overall production efficiency. “I was somewhat familiar with Cabinet Vision, and thought I could start with a blank slate and customize it to suit our needs,” said Leroy, the company’s primary programmer. “My Cabinet

Vision looks completely different from that of 99% of the people who use it because we have all of our SKU numbers catalogued in the software —which also includes sub catalogues with different wood species and other custom set-ups. I actually use the SKU numbers to create my orders, so everything is very custom to us.” The ability to customise Cabinet Vision to reflect the sheer size and diversity of Daniel’s Amish Collection simplifies the process of culling through countless options and organizing jobs that differ wildly from day to day.

The Daniel’s Amish Collection team, which builds between 500 and 600 drawer boxes a day, offers 1500 unique options just for the chests that it produces. The total number or unique options across furniture type, wood variety, stain colour, and hardware choices numbers in the tens of thousands. “We’re doing 50 night-stands and 50 headboards in a day, which may entail five different styles of night-stands, as well as nightstands from different collections,” Leroy said. “With Cabinet Vision, I can nest everything and within a matter seconds have a whole day’s work ready to cut. Without the software, it would take an hour just to figure out how to fit everything on a sheet.” In addition to customising the system’s virtual catalogue to reflect the company’s options,

There is a continuous demand for processes in the manufacturing industry to become more efficient, with technological and automated processes cited as the main drivers of growth. Two pegs fit into pre-drilled holes, while just one pre-fitted screw must be attached to secure the fitting to the interior cabinet panels; following this wall-mounted boxes connect with frontal panels in one, simple clicking motion. Kinvaro T-Slim – a new dimension of invisibility Overhead wall cabinets are still one of the most popular storage solutions in the kitchen. After the first-ever concealed hinge or the invention of the double wall drawer, we have now developed a new dimension of invisibility with Kinvaro T-Slim.” Kinvaro T-Slim blends into the furniture almost invisibly, thereby unlocking completely new possibilities for overhead wall cabinets in response to the current trend. Particularly wide, rather than tall, storage solutions with lift-up flaps are currently undergoing a renaissance. Whether fitted at eye level directly above the kitchen worktop, sink or cooker, or above a desk or the television in the living room, or next to the mirror in the bathroom, overhead wall cabinets with flaps are an essential design feature in modern interiors,” states Grass A movement mechanism that does not distract from the design The challenge here is obvious, as every technical detail is visible on a piece of furniture fitted at eye level. This fact prompted the development of Kinvaro T-Slim. Grass’ engineers have managed to reduce the complex mechanism of a lift-up fitting down to an overall size of 12mm. This minimal size provides furniture designers with maximum flexibility. Anything is possible from a minimum side wall thickness of 16mm upwards. In material terms, there are hardly any limitations – wood can just as easily be used as MDF,

and Kinvaro T-Slim’s effect on the furniture’s aesthetics really comes into its own on glass front flaps with aluminium frames. The fitting becomes one with the furniture. “The best movement mechanisms distinguish themselves by the fact that they give precedence to the design of the furniture they have been fitted to,” says brand manager Harald Klüh. “Kinvaro T-Slim perfectly exemplifies this philosophy.” Besides the obvious aesthetic bonus, this reduction in size offers another advantage –the flap lift-up mechanism takes up very little room, so the available storage space can be used to its full potential. A fascinating display of kinetics The Kinvaro T-Slim flap lift-up mechanism joints are made of nickel-plated steel. Moving Kinvaro T-Slim’s five-part jointed hinge arms reveals a display of well-co-ordinated technical expertise – nothing seems to be left to chance. The precise interaction of the matte shiny leverage elements follows a cleverly

choreographed sequence of forces – apparently designed to defy the laws of physics. This effortlessness is also transferred to the user – the cabinet front is so easy to move that it appears to be lifted up by an invisible force. The soft-close technology, already proven millions of times over, ensures an elegant, gently dampened closing movement, a comfort feature that is particularly important on overhead wall cabinets. With an opening angle of 107°, the flap opens well beyond the user’s area of movement – conveniently, it can therefore stay open without getting in the way. It comes with an integrated opening angle limiting stay that prevents the front from being lifted up too high on overhead wall cabinets that are mounted directly below the ceiling. It can also be equipped with Tipmatic for handleless cabinet versions. A wider range of fitting possibilities When it comes to the fitting options, the latest Grass product offers several possibilities – Kinvaro T-Slim can either be inset, or overlaid and screwed on, the most commonly used alternative in the industry. The design of this fitting version is also impressively slim and space-saving. No tools are needed to fit and remove the two-part covering pelmet. The flap lift system can therefore also be adjusted after it has been fitted, if necessary. It is attached to the front with a clip, a solution that is as elegant as it is simple. The adjustable spring tension can be adjusted from the front – to ensure that the fronts move easily and elegantly. Ashley Ann Kitchens in Wick appointed AFS Biomass to install a Gilles biomass heating system in the new factory With strong business growth, Ashley Ann Kitchens in Wick took over an adjacent factory for production, warehousing and despatch. The front of the building boasted a large office suite and showroom. The entire building was previously heated using LPG which would have been prohibitively expensive and went against the company’s aim of being as eco-friendly as possible. AFS Biomass was recommended to managing director, Steve Bremner, who needed a modern, efficient and robust biomass boiler system which was accredited to burn the manufacturing residue including sawdust, shavings, off-cuts and packaging, all of which was extracted into a bespoke fuel silo through the new EDS extraction system. AFS Biomass recommended the Gilles HPKI-K Industrial Boiler, with heat distributed throughout the factory, warehouse and despatch from overhead multi-directional fan coil radiators. The offices and showroom were connected via a plate heat exchanger to the existing radiator system. In addition to huge savings from burning free wood fuel against the cost of LPG, further savings were created by not having to dispose of all that waste.

Speedy solutions from Dustraction In the last five years, Norfolk-based Bill Cleyndert & Co Ltd have gone through considerable change, which has seen the high-end residential joinery business acquire a traditional furniture business and buy a second workshop in order to keep up with growing demand. This investment has meant the full refurbishment of an old workshop and the installation of a brand-new extraction system from experienced wood waste extraction specialist, Dustraction.

“We have grown significantly since 2015,” begins Mandi Cleyndert, MD of Bill Cleyndert & Co Ltd. “We had reached maximum capacity at our factory in Fakenham and we were on the brink of having to turn work away.” To overcome this, the family-run business bought a traditional woodworking business and, following the re-training and development of its workforce, added a second manufacturing site to produce

high-end cabinetry. “In April last year, we purchased an old two-bay workshop in Norwich to home our extended workforce. One half of the building had been inhabited by a small metalworking company and the unit didn’t have basic utilities. The whole place needed to be fully stripped and repurposed for joinery manufacturing but, in order for us to keep on top of our production timetable, we

needed the new premises to be fully up and running by October 2019.” As well as installing new electrics, heating and plumbing, a new extraction system was crucial to the project’s success. Mandi explains: “Dustraction installed the extraction when we added a biomass burner in our Fakenham site several years ago and the Dustraction team has continued to service our extraction equipment. We’ve always had a great working relationship with them and they were our preferred supplier on this project, but we still had to benchmark them against other extraction specialists. Not only did they offer us a solid proposal, we had confidence in their abilities as a company. “Service is particularly important to us and having confidence that a company can deliver on its promises when working to a tight time scale is crucial. Dustraction had delivered in the past and we knew they could deliver again.” Bill Cleyndert & Co Ltd created a floor plan that outlined where 14 woodworking machines would need to sit, including the possible accommodation of a further CNC machine. “We based our plan on the company’s best practices, existing lay-out and flow in the Fakenham workshop. Dustraction was also told which machines were being moved to the new workshop and any new machines we were going to be investing in before the site would be up and running, giving them a good insight our requirements and allowing them to put a technical plan in place.” Dustraction Silo on-site and filter bags (below)

The installation included a Dustraction’s Dustrax No 27 RV Series wood waste filter. The energy efficient design, which is unique to Dustraction, utilises a tubular sock-type filtering system and comes complete with an automatic shaker cleaning mechanism. The wood waste is transferred into the end of the hopper section via a main floor-mounted extraction fanset and is discharged into bulker bags, ready for the wood waste to be used as fuel for the company’s biomass burner. Mandi adds: “As well as offering green credentials, the design offers some flexibility in terms of machinery movement and the addition of further machines

but, with the site restricted by neighbouring units, the focus was very much on good quality and reliable extraction. “Now, thanks to the wood waste filter, the wood waste we produce at this site will help us run our main site in Fakenham. While it’s too early to see a return on investment, if the extraction system continues to run how it is, it will be an extremely efficient piece of equipment.” Mandi adds: “We have recommended Dustraction to businesses before and we will continue to do so. We find the team to be very amenable, responsive and we enjoy working

Filtermist upgrades Dams’ extraction Filtermist Systems Limited has recently installed and commissioned an all-embracing extraction system for Dams International – a leading UK manufacturer and wholesaler of office furniture. Dams International boasts a 50-year heritage in the industry and, although the company now employs close to 300 people in the UK, it began life as a one-man operation in 1967. Barry Scott provided a business machine repair service and was responsible for coining the DAMS company name – Dictating & Adding Machine Service. with head office, showroom, wooden furniture and upholstery manufacturing, assembly, warehousing and distribution facilities all now located side by side at Knowsley Industrial Park, Merseyside, the company has full control over manufacturing and product quality. Investments in equipment to support the manufacturing operation means the woodworking factory is home to a range of high-tech, high-speed equipment for large-scale furniture manufacture – all essential tools in the production of the high quality panels used in the 117,000m3/hr capacity MHL modular baghouse filter installed at Dams International

company’s ranges of office furniture and storage systems, but all producing high volumes of waste dust that requires extraction at source. Over the years, Dams has relied on dust and wood waste extraction services provided by both DCS and Cades - two of the companies that recently merged with other Filtermist operations to form Filtermist Systems Limited. This prior experience meant that Dams’ production director, Michael Dingwall, had no reservations about continuing this association when the decision was taken to completely replace the old extraction system. “The previous system had just about reached its end-of-life and new machinery purchases in recent years meant the system no longer provided sufficient extraction to cope effectively if all machines were used at the same time,” Michael explained. Dams’ woodworking plant operates around the clock and extraction fans for the previous system were running continuously, at full power, 24 hours a day. “Like every business, we continually review production costs in order to remain competitive in the marketplace. The need to replace the extraction system also presented us with an opportunity to invest in a system which would not only extract wood waste effectively, but one which could also achieve reductions in energy consumption and significantly reduce operating costs.” In common with most furniture manufacturers,

fluctuations in production volumes for particular components, and variations in product styling requirements, mean that it’s actually quite rare that all machines are in use at the same time. Consequently, as Michael Dingwall confirmed: “The old extraction system was constantly extracting at levels way above what was generally required.” Following a full review of Dams’ requirements for current and future dust extraction and woodwaste management, Steve Rhodes, Systems sales manager at Filtermist, put forward a comprehensive proposal for the installation of an externally-sited Moldow filter unit complete with new extraction fans, XS Automation electrical control gear, and Filtermist’s FastClip steel ducting fitted throughout. Steve Rhodes also proposed the implementation of Ecogate energy-saving smart technology, with automatic motorised dampers fitted to all machine extraction points, and the entire system controlled by a bank of Ecogate greenBOX controllers. Filtermist Systems Limited is the sole UK agent for ATEX-compliant Moldow filter units and the

new installation at Dams features a Moldow MHL 204-336 modular baghouse filter. Moldow High Load (MHL) filter units are constructed from galvanised steel plate and are designed for high waste volumes and continuous 24/7 operation. At Dams the system is designed to operate under negative pressure which is provided by two, low-noise, 90kW Moldow direct drive fans; each fan having the capacity to extract over 58,500m3/hr from the ‘clean side’ of the filter unit. At the top of the MHL unit are 20 filter sections, each with an array of anti-static filter bags, providing a total filtration surface area of 700m². Extracted dust settles on the outer surface of the 2700mm long tubular bags which taper from 150mm diameter at the top, to 100mm at the bottom. A unique air regeneration system utilises a 4kW fan to automatically and continuously clean the filter bags during operation. Dust purged from the filter bags falls into the hopper section at the base of the unit and is then directed by a drag chain conveyor towards a rotary valve, from where the waste is discharged pressure-free. A 22kW fan transfers the discharged waste to a fuel storage silo, for use in the company’s wood waste burner or, when necessary, diverts it via a closed-loop system to a trailer for removal from site. The installation serves over 20 machines, with a total extraction volume requirement of 130,0003/hr,

and also includes spark detection devices and explosion non-return valves in each of the four main dust extraction lines. Although the system is designed to be able to accommodate all machines in operation at the same time, the maximum requirement is normally much lower than this and varies continuously as machines come on or off-line. Ecogate technology ensures the fans operate at the optimum levels required to maintain efficient extraction, and to extract only from machines that are in operation. As well as monitoring machines coming on or offline during a normal working day shift, the Ecogate system also ensures minimum power usage through a night shift when machine usage is general much lower. “Using our audit of machine usage at Dams we calculated that the cost of the Ecogate installation could be recovered in just 12 months,” says Steve Rhodes. As well as looking forward to significant ongoing cost savings, Michael Dingwall was also delighted with the schedule of works undertaken by Filtermist’s installation engineers: “The Filtermist team had prepared the way for our new filter to be installed over the Christmas shut-down and, by the first day back after the break, the new filter installation was completed and operational.” 01952 290500 www.filtermist.co.uk

New high-efficiency warehouse featuring semi-automatic panel storage The heart of Robert Fehr’s new building in Andelfingen, Switzerland, is a semi-automated warehouse for wooden boards up to 6m long and 2.5m wide. In the scope of this project, OHRA supplied the racking system, the stacker crane, and the control software. A special feature of the semi-automatic warehouse is its compact design and high space utilisation, which results in a high storage capacity and low storage costs. With its corporate philosophy revolving around the ecological processing of domestic raw materials, Robert Fehr has established a leading position in the region. The company’s success meant new facilities were needed and included an expansion of the joinery, workshop and warehouse. The racking and storage technology was supplied by OHRA: the manufacturer, with headquarters in Kerpen, Germany, is a specialist in racking systems for the timber trade and is the European market leader for cantilever racks. The 40m long, single-aisle semi-automatic warehouse offers space for various panel materials used in interior construction and by the joinery. The warehouse connects two floors of the building in height and the goods enter into and exit the warehousing unit via the second storey. The packs of dry construction panels, MDF, chipboard or sandwich boards which can weigh up to four tons are stored in two single-sided cantilever racks with nine storage levels, a height of 7.5m and a maximum storage depth of 2.5m. In order to achieve more flexibility in the heights of the various storage levels and thus to improve space utilisation even further, the individual cantilever arms are

suspended in the racking uprights on a 50mm pitch (standard pitch 100mm). Due to the boltless design of the arms, the storage levels can be quickly adjusted to the changing dimensions of the products without the use of tools. Special adjusting screws provide a fine adjustment facility of the cantilever levels. The solution, which OHRA individually designed to meet Robert Fehr’s requirements, enabled a very compact warehousing area footprint. The semi-automatic handling of the panels not only leads to a high storage capacity on the given area, but also reduces the risk of damage to the racks and stored goods. At the same time, the new storage system has helped greatly speed up the incoming goods processes. Robert Fehr has been using OHRA rack systems for 20 years. In addition to the semi-automatic warehouse, other storage areas – such as the veneer warehouse and an outdoor warehouse – have also been equipped with OHRA cantilever racks. www.ohra.de

“We are also often asked to rotate boards through 90° or 180° for loading and unloading purposes. SCM underpins Xylepxo presence with further user-friendly smart factory options Once again, this year SCM will play a key role at Xylexpo, now in its 27th edition and due to be held at the Milano-Rho Trade Fair from 26 to 29 May 2020. The new version being exhibited in Milan will be a mere example of the various configurations which this production model can take on, based on the customer’s production requirements. It is made up of flexible, modular automated cells integrated by anthropomorphic robots and interconnected by intelligent AMR unmanned shuttles. The Smart&Human production process of the cabinet will concern two particular areas: sizing/ nesting, and edgebanding. Smart&Human – nesting cell In the storage and cutting area, the machining centre for morbidelli x200 nesting will be integrated directly inside flexstore hp, the high performance automatic magazine of shaped panels. As a result, once stored and labelled, the panel will not be loaded onto roller conveyors or other moving systems but directly onto the nesting model worktable, thus protecting panels made with delicate materials or that have delicate surfaces. Once the nesting cut has been completed, which in the morbidelli x200 is done with exclusive production levels for this kind of machining (500 pieces per shift), an anthropomorphic robot will directly unload the panel from the table and place it on the pallets, ready for the next process. Another new aspect concerns the management of smaller pieces and waste: the robot will also pick these up, making them available for future made-to-order productions. The advantage is an excellent optimisation of the use of materials. The cell however is also designed so that all panels with no problems linked to delicate surfaces can be manually unloaded from the belt. The blade cut will be done simultaneously to the nesting. The flexstore hp magazine will be integrated with the new gabbiani p80 sizing machine which stands out thanks to its Saw-Set device which offers a faster and more accurate tool setting.

Smart&Human – edgebanding cell The new flexible stefani cell E edgebanding cell for batch 1 will be configured with the anthropomorphic robot for a complete automatic management of the panel loading/ unloading work. The new cell combines the advantages of a customised production and large volumes with a compact overall design and, above all, with an accessible investment even for SMEs. Parameters like colour, edge thickness, the position and depth of the mortise, the management of the protective film and panel sizes can be continually changed without interrupting the production flow. With the new pickback bridge system for the automatic return of panels, the panel is automatically rotated to speed up the next in-feed. It will also be possible to unload at the end of the cycle in masked time with the next loop load. Digital software and services SCM will also use Xylexpo to demonstrate its digital integrated woodworking process:

software and services will be presented in relation to the customer’s procedure, starting from the planning stages, data preparation, machine production, production monitoring, maintenance and after-sales assistance. The presentation will be made during a five-step customer-centric itinerary where the customer will have a chance to find tangible, immediate answers to his/her demands. Lastly, the new releases enabled by the Maestro connect platform will be presented for the Digital Services: as well as a centralised vision and monitoring of the status of all the machines connected in the factory, there will also be new “troubleshooting” documents to allow the user to intervene instantly to reactivate the machine, if it stops. Key point in time for Giardina Group Giardina Group will once again be exhibiting at Xylexpo this year, doing so in a very concrete way, with an impressive stand of 600m2, demonstrating not only the results of a very positive season, but reaffirming its desire to grow, investing in new markets and strengthening its brand at international level. “This is the largest stand that Giardina Group has ever held at an exhibition,” said Stefano Mauri, co-owner of the group with his brother Riccardo at the press preview event held in Milan in February. “This is not about showing who is the strongest, but about having the space needed to represent what we have become – and what we want to become,” added Stefano. “Xylexpo is an international reference event, one of the most important in our commercial and marketing programmes. It is also our home exhibition, because it takes place in an exhibition centre located close to our headquarters, allowing us to readily present many of our technologies. “We have been working intensely for a few months for this edition, because we want to present ourselves in a different way, involving even more evidently the increasingly strong and

big team of dealers that we are building all over the world and giving everyone the opportunity to see and to try our technologies.” An event that rewards an extremely positive season for the group, which has seen its sales grow significantly despite an intervening period which many believe and experience as cautious. “2019 ended with a total turnover of €20m,” confirmed Stefano, “and we already have an order book for the current year.” On the Giardina stand at Xylexpo, there will not only be machines, but a whole set-up which will explain the group’s developments, its latest technological bets and, above all, the variety of proposals with which we will fully meet any painting need. “Xylexpo is particular important event for us,” comments Stefano Tibè, commercial director of Giardina Group, “because it takes place close to our headquarters and this means being able to

exhibit most of our technologies. In other words, in Milan we will be able to have more and a high visibility, confirming once again the homogeneity and breadth of our range, from spraying guns to roller painting, up to the finishing of the profiles. “In the latter segment, we will show an important line created for a Swiss customer, a bead painting system which allows strong productivity, thanks to the loading and unloading systems, with excellent quality results.” In the 600m² of its stand, the largest in the Giardina’s history, the company will also exhibit a line for painting the panel using a paint roller with UV drying. The technological focus at the show will still be its Excimer technology. “The market now recognises that we have been among the first and most convinced supporters of the potential of this technology. “Most of the technologies that we will propose at Xylexpo will involve this topic and, above all, will be perfectly functional, just to demonstrate the maturity that has been achieved with this particular surface treatment. Our zero gloss drying ovens will work on surfaces painted both with roller and spray gun,” explained Tibè. “These are the two great worlds of painting which we had already talked about on the occasion of the most important exhibitions in the world over the last two years. In Milan, we will present the latest evolutions of these techniques, especially in the case of spray painting and the creation of super opaque surfaces. “Xylexpo could be the place to present a highly innovative solution linked to the Excimer treatments, that is, a drying oven with particular performances that we have been testing in recent weeks and which could represent the ideal solutio” for many painting companies,” concluded Tibè. www.giardinagroup.com

Striebig and ALKO: a perfect partnership While you might not have heard of Brissco Equipment Ltd, you will have undoubtedly seen its products. Established over 70 years ago, the Bristol-based company has grown to become one of the UK’s leading screen printing companies. Its speciality is the design and manufacturing of ridged plastic signage for national utilities, aerospace, local authorities and the emergency services. Following a merger with a local plastics distribution business in 2011 and a management buy-out in 2017, the growing company is now investing in new equipment throughout its factory, including a new Striebig Control 4224 vertical panel saw from woodworking machinery supplier, TM Machinery. “We had our old vertical panel saw for over 30 years and it had become an integral part of our business,” says Phil Pope, managing director of Brissco Equipment Ltd. “But, in recent years, our business model has changed. Not only do we cut rigid plastics for our signage work, since our company merger, we now offer a bespoke plastic fabricating service too, creating plastic components for equipment manufacturers in the UK. This means we need to cut acrylic, polycarbonate, PVC, foam PVC, ABS and aluminium composite in boards as big as 2 x 3m wide and 1-10mm thick quickly and efficiently. Our old machine could no longer keep up.”

“I’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and I know Striebig well. So, when it became clear that our old saw needed to be changed, TM Machinery was my first port of call. I knew exactly what we needed our replacement saw to do and I knew Striebig would be able to deliver on our requirements,” says Phil. “First and foremost, it needed to be built to last and offer clean, accurate cuts on a range of materials. It also needed to make the cutting panels to size less of a manual process, eliminating potential operator error and material waste – and it needed to be smaller than our existing saw, so we could make the most of the floor space we had available.” The Striebig Control seemed like a great fit and, when an ex-demonstration model from TM Machinery’s Leicester-based showroom became available, Phil admits he couldn’t refuse. “Not only was it cheaper than buying a brand new saw, it came with a wealth of automated features and could be delivered at a time that suited us.” The Control’s rigid, self-supporting frame features full length central supports, as well as internal small piece supports, making it ideal for use on both heavy and lightweight plastic sheets. It also provided the robust design and build quality Phil was looking for. Its fullyautomated cut cycle and easy-to-operate touch

control screen simplified the cutting process and offered Phil the consistently accurate cuts he wanted and reduced manual handling. Phil explains: “Unlike our old machine that relied on the operator to dictate the cutting speed, the Striebig’s feed speed can be adjusted depending on the material, size and thickness of the panel. This allows the operator to concentrate on loading and sizing the material and ensuring a yield on every panel without having to consider other factors.”

The saw’s smaller footprint was also an advantage. “At one time, a large part of our business involved distributing plastic sheets to the trade,” says Phil. “Because of this, we bought our old saw to cut multi-wall polycarbonate and large panels up to six metres long. We’ve since tailored our business model and now only manufacture plastic items. This sees us work predominantly with 3 x 2m and 8x4 feet sheets.” The Striebig Control measures 5153 x 3035mm and has a cutting range of 3100 x 2240mm, offering great scope, and it fits neatly into a compact space. Phil teamed the new saw with an AL-KO Power Unit 160 from TM Machinery. “The extraction on our old saw wasn’t very good. We wanted an efficient alternative that not only saved us cleaning time but also made the floor a cleaner environment to work in.” The free-standing AL-KO extraction unit offers optimal filter cleaning and requires the least amount of compressed air possible. It also guarantees 100% air recirculation without loss of temperature and it is housed in a soundproof casing to reduce noise levels when in use. Phil says: “It’s the ideal partner for the Striebig. It’s quick to empty and easy to clean thanks to its removable dust compartment and it was really simple to install. The engineers calibrated the saw and the extraction unit at the same time and they’ve been working well together ever since. The whole process has been faultless. “For us, the investment in new machinery

hasn’t been about increasing production or de-skilling our workforce,” Phil concludes. “It’s been about delivering high quality products to our customers time and again. Founded in the 1930s, the carpentry company based in Nuremberg is able to look back on a tradition that spans almost a century. Taking on the role of Manager in 2011, Jochen Meier is now the third generation of his family to run the medium-sized firm. While it remained specialised in coffin making in its founding years, the company's focus has since made a clear shift to producing modern furniture, exclusive interior fittings and high-quality furnishings. The progressive company also includes a planning and visualisation office, and is responsible for representing CAD software RSO on the German market.

Lamello fittings have always played an integral role at the Nuremberg firm's workshop. Besides the P-System connectors Clamex P, Tenso P and Divario P, the carpentry company uses the­­ Cabineo CNC connector, as well as the highly innovative Invis magnetic connector. "The P-System connectors are the optimal solution for high-quality interior fittings and can be installed ­virtually without any tools," Jochen Meier explains. The connectors are ­primarily used for the carpentry firm's elegant cabinets and shelves.

Greater efficiency thanks to end-to-end production Jochen Meier sees an additional advantage of the P-System connectors in

their compatibility with end-to-end production processes. "If a product is automated – or can be controlled digitally – it will also be used," he emphasises. This means that, as soon as a connector is entered in the planning, ERP and production software, the ­corresponding part will also be used in practice. "The customer is prepared to pay for this added value," Meier adds.

The proposal phase

From first contact with the customer through to the finished ­product, the following steps are completed:

1. Measuring: Using the Leica room scanner, the relevant space or property is ­measured on location to millimetre accuracy within just a few minutes. Since the scanner works autonomously, the carpenter or joiner is able to address the customer’s questions and concerns directly. What’s more, this straightforward measurement process allows several customers to be served each day, which would be near impossible with conventional methods.

2. The proposal phase: The furniture is then planned within the digitised space. If necessary, elaborate renderings can also be prepared to produce an authentic impression of the end product.

3. CAD planning: Once the order is placed, the scanned room can be fed into the RSO CAD software. Here, the items of furniture are drawn with all of their ­individual components and connectors. In this phase, the planner can select the detachable Clamex P connector, which is automatically placed into the ­workpieces. This also works from multiple perspectives. The connectors can also be easily repositioned afterwards, where necessary. 4. The bill of material: The finished CAD file can then be imported into the ERP software Orga Calc, which automatically produces an exact bill of material.

The material order can now be submitted manually. 5. CNC machining: This step involves formatting and machining the workpieces on the Homag Venture 316 L CNC 5-axis CNC machine. Thanks to macro linking in the CAD drawing, the P-System grooves are milled directly into the workpiece

without additional effort. At Jochen Meier Schreinerei GmbH, practically all Clamex P connectors are milled by CNC. Now, the manual machine is only used sporadically. 6. Final processing: As soon as the workpieces have been cut to size and are ready for further processing, the edges are completed and coated and the Clamex P connectors installed. 7. Dispatch: The furniture is now ready to be transported to the customer. Ideally,

the furniture should be sent flat packed, which is no problem at all with the P-System connectors.

For Jochen Meier, the biggest challenge with end-to-end manufacturing is bringing together individuality with industrial production: in other words, reconciling individual design with optimised, digital production chains. It seems the Franconian company is achieving this objective with outstanding results. Revenue has more than doubled since 2008, which is undoubtedly due in part to the switch to end-to-end production.
