Comment Whilst it can be difficult to see through the indecision besieging our current political situation, the wheels of business will never stand still – industry will always find a way. Glancing optimistically towards May (pun intended), the furniture and joinery industry’s pre-eminent gathering of machinery and equipment, materials, fittings and components will take place in Germany, firstly at interzum in Cologne and then Ligna in Hannover. With recessionary fears stalking much of the EU, and even Chinese factories struggling, hopefully we can look forward to a positive event with plenty of innovation, new ideas and upgraded technology and materials.

John Legg

However, it is the Brexit situation which dominates the national psyche, and Editorial director our rigid Westminster factions seem unable to reach a consensus regarding how we leave Europe. Of course, there are businesses which manufacture machinery and equipment in the UK, and they may see a hard Brexit as an opportunity – but with much of the furniture and joinery manufacturing industry reliant on EU imports, the trading landscape will change, whatever the outcome. Everybody has a view on the style of Brexit the Government is trying to achieve, be it hard or soft, remain, leave-and-rejoin, or even referendum#2. But most of the UK’s most important business trade bodies – the Federation of Small Businesses, Confederation of British Industry and British Chambers of Commerce – concur that a no-deal option would lead to significant disruption, and that even a ‘managed’ no-deal scenario is not credible, given the time frame. Businesses will need time to adjust to the new conditions, the industry’s carefully-built supply chains will face disruption, and customs costs and tariffs will present considerable challenges. Hopefully, in the days ahead, our politicians can create a palatable deal for all concerned, and we can all get back to work! Looking to what financial analysts are predicting, the EU will narrowly avoid a recession in 2019 – but growth is likely to remain weak. Towards the end of 2019, most suggest that demand will improve.

Furniture industry value debated in Westminster Ms Maggie Throup MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group (APPFIG), secured a Westminster Hall debate on 23rd January 2019 that examined the contribution of furniture manufacturing to the UK economy. Ms Throup used the opportunity to champion UK furniture manufacturing and raised some of the policy issues that the British Furniture Confederation (BFC) has been highlighting. During the debate, Ms Throup raised four key issues: trade and export; standards and regulations; skills and education; and the environment. All of these areas are key BFC policy concerns, which can be found in its manifesto. The debate was well attended by MPs from both sides of the House of Commons and from constituencies across the UK. Richard Harrington MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Business and Industry, responded for the Government. He acknowledged the economic importance of the furniture

Airsprung Group invests in the cutting edge technology The Airsprung Group PLC has announced a £250k investment in machinery at two of its group companies. Cavendish Upholstery is the group’s sofa manufacturing operation based in Chorley, and it has just taken delivery of a new Lectra automated cutting machine. The latest camera technology enables pattern and stripe matching and this highly efficient automated CAD operated machine will further expand Cavendish’s extensive upholstery offer. As well as increasing reliability, the investment offers a considerably higher capacity to service the expanding customer base. Swanglen, the premier headboard brand, has recently installed a state of the art CNC cutting machine at its Bristol facility. The latest technology allows Swanglen to generate the most accurate profiled shaping and positioning for fittings. This investment greatly increases the speed of production and reliability. In addition, the system allows for greater flexibility for new product development. This investment confirms Airsprung Group’s commitment to the domestic upholstery and headboard markets.

The All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group examining the contribution of furniture manufacturing to the UK economy industry, commented how ‘furniture is fundamental to all our lives’ and provided clarity on the Government’s position on some of the BFC’s key policy concerns. Mr Harrington mentioned that ‘the country has a rich history of producing world-class furniture’. On Brexit, he said: ‘The Government will do everything we can to ensure that the movement of goods

remains as frictionless as possible to the benefit of industry across the UK.’ On safety and regulation, Mr Harrington said: ‘We need to maintain the industry’s reputation for excellence in both quality and safety’. On skills and education, he said: ‘The Government are keen to ensure that the industry has the skills it needs’.

Mr Harrington concluded the debate by stating that he recognised ‘the furniture industry’s great contribution to our country and of the strong position it is in to make a positive contribution to a more sustainable future.’ The chairman of the BFC, Jonathan Hindle, commented: ‘The debate highlighted the important contribution of the UK furniture industry to the UK economy and allowed a number of the industry’s key policy concerns to be discussed. I’m very grateful to Maggie Throup MP for seeking the debate and look forward to working with her, the APPFIG and Government departments to ensure that the British furniture industry continues to thrive.’ Watch the debate on https:// parliamentlive.tv/event/ index/58e4bd67-88a0-484a8426-522ded201c26?in=16:32:07& out=17:00:00 Read the BFC 2018 Manifesto on The British Furniture Cconfederation website.

FIRA International offers new training courses as part of 2019 curriculum FIRA International has released its training schedule for 2019. New courses have been added to its training curriculum, which reflect the changing nature of the furniture industry, regulations and legislation, and include: • CE Marking Electrically Powered Office Furniture • PAS7100, Risk Assessments and Due Diligence • An Introduction to Upholstered Furniture Regulations The CE Marking Electrically Powered Office Furniture course reflects the rise in the sales volumes of powered office furniture including motors like sit stand desking and height-adjustable monitor arms. The use of mechanisms and electrical components in office furniture brings with it requirements and considerations for manufacturers, purchasers, specifiers, importers and distributors. Guidance published July 2017 referencing the machinery directive clarifies that electricallypowered office furniture falls under the remit of this directive (and others), but there still remains confusion around this. As such, the course agenda includes topics from a background to CE marking, process flows for marking and declaring conformity. The next new course is PAS7100, Risk Assessments and Due Diligence, which is centred on PAS7100 (code of practice on consumer product safety-related recalls). The agenda includes an overview of the PAS for

businesses, recalls and corrective actions, due diligence and the importance of preparation. The course should prove useful for those involved in management, compliance and quality, crisis management and others involved in executing business processes. The third and final new course being offered by FIRA International is An Introduction to Upholstered Furniture Regulations. This introductory course aims to offer an understanding of the regulations and responsibilities of each business type, from retailers to importers and manufacturers, and the relevant duties to ensure a good level of due diligence. Topics include the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended),

Reform (Fire Safety) Order for contract furniture, Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulations, Biocides (chemical) regulations, Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), EU Timber Regulations and also the General Product Safety Regulations. These three new courses sit alongside the more established FIRA International courses: • EU Timber Regulations/Environmental Awareness • Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations Training Further details on all courses are available via the FIRA website. 01438 777700 www.fira.co.uk/training

Help For Heroes article clarification

Lectra is strengthening its executive committee to accelerate the implementation of its Lectra 4.0 strategy with the objective of becoming a key player in the Industry 4.0 market. Lectra’s 2017-2019 strategic roadmap has five objectives: accelerate revenue growth, both organic and through targeted acquisitions; accentuate its technological leadership to further enhance the value of its products and services offer; strengthen its position and relationships with customers; progressively launch new software offers in SaaS mode; and self-finance its internal and external development. To accelerate the execution of its strategy, the group has reviewed the organisation of its subsidiaries and will refocus efforts toward customer success

On the 15th October 2018, an article entitled ‘Help For Heroes Raises Over £1200 At The W Exhibition & Elements’ was distributed to the trade press on behalf of the W Exhibition and Elements event organiser, Montgomery. The article, which included references to several companies that helped the charity raise funds during the woodworking machine and materials show in October 2018, incorrectly referred to Masterwood GB Ltd as Masterwood UK. The organiser says: “We would like to take this opportunity to apologise for this mistake and confirm that Masterwood GB

as well as expanding its executive committee, which remains under the chairmanship of Daniel Harari, chairman and CEO. Harari says: “Our growth plan is ambitious and we had to put in place a structure that enables us to quickly achieve our objectives. The new dynamic of our regions … will further strengthen the intimacy we share with our customers. “I have worked for a long time with each member of this new executive committee, and I have admired and appreciated over the years their passion for Lectra and the depth and range of their talents. We have a more robust and cohesive management team in which I have every bit of confidence to take Lectra to a new and important stage in its development.” www.lectra.com

Ltd supported Help for Heroes at the event by raffling off a giant dinosaur. “This, along with bucket collections and visitor donations to the charity’s Band of Brother craftsmen, helped the charity raise £1217 and promote awareness for its #TheForceForGood campaign. “All proceeds since the event have gone to Help for Heroes woodworking shops and recovery centres.” www.wexhibition.co.uk

Interzum provides vital inspiration for designers and architects What does the home of the future look like? How will we furnish our homes in future? What materials and functions shape the design and architecture of tomorrow? The upcoming interzum event offers all kinds of inspiration for those who want to know more about the trends and innovations that will shape the way we live in future. From 21st to 24th May 2019, the leading international trade fair in Cologne presents new possibilities in furniture and interior design. Pioneering materials and innovative new technologies are the focus for exhibitors. With a range of special exhibitions, the trade fair also explores global mega-trends such as individualisation, living in small spaces, mobility and digitalisation. Lifestyles are becoming more diverse, individualised, mobile and connected. With this transformation in living and working environments comes a change in furnishing. Traditional living areas have been enhanced: the kitchen has become a living space in its

own right; the bathroom has long been more than a place to wash; and we increasingly expect public spaces such as offices to be cosy. As a result, we now have greater expectations in terms of the durability, functionality and sustainability of furniture. At the same time, living in small spaces is an increasingly important topic due to the growth of mega-cities around the world. Digital technologies are being incorporated into everyday lives, changing ways of living and working. Questions about the future of our living environments are therefore becoming ever more pressing. What new possibilities do innovative materials offer with regard to aspects of functionality, technology and sustainability? How do technical components increase comfort and convenience in the home? How can individual pieces of furniture or whole rooms be intelligently connected? What new solutions are available for increasing mobility or for living in small spaces?

Answers to all these questions can be found at the upcoming interzum trade fair, where international exhibitors provide exclusive insights into the trends that will shape living and working spaces in future. The innovations presented at the trade fair are often on display for an international audience for the first time ever. A number of exhibitors present pioneering innovations or their own trend studies, thereby offering designers and architects valuable inspiration for their work. Product innovations from the fields of materials and surfaces, textiles,

furniture components, and lights and lighting systems play a particularly important role. The spectrum of topics connected in this way includes new function processes in the home, lightweight construction solutions for mobile and immobile spaces, and smart interior concepts. Despite, or perhaps due to, the growth of digital media, materials and feel are increasingly gaining in importance. Today, innovations in the field of materials play a key role in the design of living and working spaces. Innovative materials bring new qualities to rooms

and furnishings, they make them more functional, more flexible and smarter. This is where interzum comes to the fore, presenting a huge range of new materials and applications. Designers and architects can learn first-hand about new developments in the materials industry. Be it hightech or digitally printed surfaces, natural veneers or composite materials made of renewable raw materials – the spectrum of innovations presented at the trade fair is the most extensive you’ll see anywhere worldwide. Exhibitors will show new possibilities for furniture and interiors arising from developments in lightweight construction, and demonstrate how a new understanding of mobility is influencing the design of vehicles. The potential of recycling and upcycling is examined at the trade fair, as is that of 3D printing and other forward-looking production processes. Creativity is often expressed in the details. Components such as metal fittings or recessed luminaires also expand the range of design possibilities for furnishings. With intelligent furniture technology that

rethinks and improves traditional functions, the home becomes more comfortable and flexible. In this area too, interzum offers the supplier industry an opportunity to present its phenomenal innovative capability. Exhibitors show first innovations, from which product and interior designers develop their designs in turn – from furniture fittings for new storage solutions to LED lamps that can be controlled with speech or gestures. With international exhibitors from the furniture supply industry and interior construction, interzum covers the whole spectrum of the global market. This is where trends and innovations that directly influence the design and architecture of tomorrow are revealed. In the coming year the trade fair will continue to grow, and a new hall allocation will give it an improved structure. Interzum organiser Koelnmesse expects more than 1800 exhibitors at thism year’s show. Pioneering innovations are presented in the three segments Materials & Nature, Function & Components and Textile & Machinery. www.interzum.com

The modular filter unit installed by DCS Ltd has an air volume capacity of 18,150m3/hr and collected softwood shavings are transferred to a 30m3 storage silo

Following the company’s recent relocation to larger premises, Sampson Products Ltd, a West Yorkshire-based timber processing and furniture component manufacturer, has benefitted from the extraction expertise that Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) consistently delivers to the UK woodworking industry.

DCS saves Sampson’s shavings As Sampson Products’ managing director, Simon Banks, explains: “We were previously occupying part of an old two-storey mill, but the space was not ideally-suited to the needs of our expanding manufacturing output.” In spring last year, however, an opportunity arose to move the business to a more appropriate large open mill building just two minutes down the road, mostly on one level, but with ramps allowing fork truck access to all areas. “The layout of the old factory meant that all dust and woodwaste extraction was provided by a number of independent open-bag filter units, but the relocation presented us with the chance to investigate alternative extraction equipment and, specifically, the possibilities and benefits of implementing an integrated system.” “We invited a few companies to evaluate our extraction requirements at the new premises, but Dust Control Systems were selected to undertake the project based on their comprehensive appraisal of our needs; they took

an interest in our company and fully appreciated the challenges of our manufacturing process – including identifying and accommodating potential future changes.” Ray Townley, area sales manager at DCS, continues: “The bulk of the wood waste produced at Sampson Products comes from two Weinig Unimat planer moulders; typically generating around three to four tonnes of clean Scandinavian softwood shavings every day. “Rather than paying for disposal, Simon was keen to monetise the waste shavings and had purchased a second hand baling machine ready for installation at the new factory.” At the heart of the system proposed by DCS is an externally-sited NFKZ3000 2+1 HJLR modular chain filter which has the capacity to handle around 18,000m3 of waste-laden air every hour, and includes integrated regeneration fans to provide powerful online reverse-air cleaning of the patented antistatic Superbag filter media. Constructed from galvanised steel panels, this compact, cost-efficient unit comprises two

filter modules plus one inlet module and, with a combined inspection and explosion relief door fitted to each module, is fully ATEX-approved. NFKZ3000 modular filter units are virtually maintenance-free and are designed for continuous operation; ideal for timber processing factories such as Sampson Products where planer moulders are profiling softwood furniture components around-the-clock. Powered by a 30kW motor, the direct drive main fanset extracts woodwaste from the workshop, via 600mm diameter FastClip ductwork; delivering it to the filter unit where the softwood shavings collect in the base of the hopper section. A chain and flight conveyor continually directs the collected waste to the outfeed end of the hopper where it is discharged pressure-free, via a rotary valve, before being propelled by an 11kW transport fan, to a height of over eight metres, where the waste enters a cyclone unit mounted directly above an adjacent storage silo. From here the shavings are transferred by a

Waste exits the filter unit pressure-free, via rotary valve, and is then propelled vertically by a transport fan to the cyclone unit From the silo, shavings are discharged via screw conveyor to a rotary valve and then blown at speed to the baler From the cyclone, clean shavings are delivered pressure-free, via rotary valve, to the galvanised steel silo below

A second filter reduces the airflow speed before finally discharging shavings to the baler, pressure-free, via rotary valve

“The modular construction of the NF3000 series of filter units allows for a straightforward expansion of the system when required – effectively future-proofing the extraction system to accommodate potential growth in output” second rotary valve, again pressure-free, into the 30m3 capacity silo. Manufactured by Gallito, a DCS group company, the silo is a galvanised steel panel construction, with sight windows to visually monitor the fill level, plus a rotary paddle level switch which triggers an audible alarm as the maximum fill height is neared. Once sufficient volume has accumulated in the silo, the shavings are discharged via screw conveyor and through a rotary valve, before a second transport fan blows the material to the baler. Above the baler, DCS have installed an NFSZ 1 HELR filter to quickly slow the flow of

shavings which are finally delivered to the baler for packing into 20kg bags ready for sale as animal bedding. To allow uninterrupted production when the baler is undergoing maintenance, design engineers at DCS also included a manuallyoperated safety divert to one of the redundant bag filter units. Other machines such as the cross-cut saws and double end tenoner, which generate a finer dust waste, along with a couple of clean-up hoses, continue to utilise two of the company’s existing bag filter extraction units – as part of the turnkey project, DCS re-sited

the bag units at the new premises and installed a new FastClip galvanised ductwork system throughout. The system has been fully operational for about three months now and Simon Banks has nothing but praise for the DCS sales and engineering team: “The project was undertaken over a period of four weeks at the end of the summer” says Simon, “and I had no complaints whatsoever with the installation. We had access to the new premises before we had to vacate the old factory, so DCS were able to plan and install the complete system in readiness for machines to be re-sited. “Once the extraction was up and running, the team of engineers from DCS simply fitted in with our production schedule and, since we have two of each of our key production machines, we were able to continue production on one machine at the old site while DCS fitted extraction to the other one at the new premises.” In conclusion, Ray Townley added: “The modular construction of the NF3000 series of filter units allows for a straightforward expansion of the system when required – effectively future-proofing the extraction system to accommodate potential growth in output at Sampson Products.” 0800 040 7116 www.dcslimited.co.uk

Homag’s woodCAD|CAM software revolutionises Aquapac Furniture Aquapac Furniture, founded in 1996, is one of the biggest manufacturers of flat pack aquarium cabinets and vivariums in the UK. In addition, it produces other wood-based products such as POS display stands and offers a simple cut and edge panel service for local tradesmen. The company, led by managing director, Stephen Connachan, is currently going through a major expansion programme and has partnered with Homag for woodworking machinery and software. Aquapac has recently moved from four leased units in Maryhill in Glasgow (which amounted to 22,000ft2) to a new single 50,000ft2 facility in Cumbernauld that the company has bought outright. This has enabled it to expand and offer products to a new marketplace – bespoke kitchens. Stephen Connachan takes up the story: “The move was the first stage in a long-term plan to grow the business. We first invested in Homag equipment in 2007 and recently we’ve bought the woodCAD|CAM software and are using it with several Homag machines including the BHX 500. “The machines we had prior

to Homag coming on board just weren’t up to the demands our increased business was putting on them, they simply couldn’t keep up. We were experiencing more down time than anything else and that’s why we decided to move to Homag who offer the bigger, more powerful and reliable industrial machines. These models have had a significant impact on our business and now enable us to process millions of panels a year.” Modernising and automating processes “Before we moved into our new facility the system to cost and quote jobs for customers was about a ten step process. This often started with the customers giving us a verbal brief or a ‘back of a fag packet’ sketch of what they wanted. “From this rough sketch we would have to draw up plans and turn them into a CAD model. If they liked the model we would then have to cost it out and, if the price was right, we would need to generate technical drawings for each of the panels before having to physically go down and program the machines for each panel. As you can imagine, this involved a lot

Homag’s woodCAD CAM software – detailed planning with CAD model drawings

of human intervention resulting in not only a high workload, but also a great deal of time. “Now, the software allows us to quickly create the CAD model concept to present to the customer; then, once the customer is happy with it, the software automatically programs our machines for us. It performs the cutting list, and also allows us to print off barcode labels for each panel with information such as batch numbers. This enables us to process smaller batches through our factory. “The main reason for us buying the BHX 500 and the software was to allow us to quote on more contract furniture work, but we also wanted to enter the batch size one market for bespoke kitchens. “Previously our business model was large batch production; we were making anywhere from 50 to 500 cabinets of the same type. Today we can produce maybe 3040 bespoke kitchens a week which was unthinkable before. “With the software we’re able to put a barcode label on every panel we produce which enables us to follow each panel through the manufacturing process before collating them into kitchen carcasses further down the line.

In the new facility we’ve set up three assembly stations where everything is flat packed and ready to assemble.” Deciding on the best solution “Selecting the right partner for the software was a big, big decision for us, so we were mindful to carry out thorough due diligence before making the investment. “We looked into most of the parametric-based systems in the marketplace and profiled a variety of companies’ software to find out which would work best for our needs. After some serious soul searching, the solution that stood out was woodCAD|CAM. “Coming from Homag we knew it would be good (after all, we’d had years of experience with them to back up our belief), and the fact that 99% of our machinery is also Homag, it made sense for us to invest in its bespoke software solution. “Before making the final decision we visited Homag UK and the Homag Treff in Germany to see the software in action. Despite the fact that it was perhaps a larger investment than some other solutions, we bought the full package – bar one module – to give us the maximum benefits and flexibility for our production. “The Homag woodCAD|CAM has enabled us to go from a ten step process down to a CAD model drawing which takes us minutes compared with hours previously. It then automatically programs the machines, does all the barcode labelling, helps schedule the cutting lists and has reduced our quoting from days to hours. “Looking ahead, our plan is to add more and more automation in the plant and this software is the enabler for us automating our production line. Over the next three years we’re looking to spend a considerable sum with Homag on more new machinery to help us achieve this goal. “Naturally, we were tempted by cheaper options from their

competition; however, we felt that keeping loyalty with the Homag brand would pay dividends in the long run. We were very confident that Homag would look after us better than if we bought the machinery from one company and the software from another. That would have given us a real headache trying to add more machines and tie it all together to make it work successfully. So the long-term strategy of sticking with Homag made sense to us.” A reliable system delivering quality products “With Homag you have certainty in the quality of the panels you produce. Previously, with the level of human intervention, there were always high risks of mistakes. Once you’d completed all your technical sheets, you’d have to go and program the machines and if an operator enters in a measurement of 1225 instead of 1125, the program wouldn’t work.

The Homag BHX 500 – batch size 1 production at Aquapac

“With the woodCAD|CAM, you’re creating an article (a cabinet) and it automatically takes care of all the details, lining up all the holes etcetera, so the software’s actually doing all the programming of the machines for you. The result means we get the production right, first time, every time, and that is so beneficial to our business. “As a consequence, the company is more efficient; it enables us to do more quotations whilst at the same time changing the aesthetics of our quotes, which not only look better, but they are also more informative for our customers. “Of course, there’s a lot to learn with such a sophisticated piece of software, but as we understand it

more we’re finding little nuggets that empower our processes. We’ve been able to develop new markets for our business since we invested in the software. Previously we weren’t able to economically produce bespoke kitchens, now we’re doing 30 or 40 kitchens a week thanks to woodCAD|CAM.” A solid recommendation “Homag machinery is, in our opinion, the best in the marketplace – it provides the very best quality results. The German parent company invest heavily in technology and when you buy Homag technology you know it is going to be at the forefront of the market for the next five or six

year at least. With competitors’ technologies they seem to be maybe two or three years behind. “The other massive benefit with Homag is the machines’ reliability; they operate consistently with very little downtime compared to other brands we’ve had in the past. They really are almost bullet-proof,” concludes Stephen Connachan. For a demonstration or more information about Homag software and machinery, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. 16 Installation A joinery company wasn’t phased when an order required in three weeks’ time was suddenly doubled.

Phased by complexity and deadlines? Not with Cabinet Vision and Alphacam “We’d recently commissioned a new Anderson Spectra 510 and invested in Cabinet Vision,” says Sam Haxby, a partner at the business started by his grandfather more than 50 years ago. “We were confident we’d get the order out by designing everything in Cabinet Vision, and using its powerful Screen-ToMachine Centre to send NC code to the machine tool.” The job was completed and despatched within the deadline, and he says it’s likely that the software paid for itself with that task alone. “We couldn’t have got it out without Cabinet Vision. The benefits of the package were immediate, and, along with our other CAD/CAM software, Alphacam, it makes a major contribution to our bottom line.” BA Haxby (Barnsley) Ltd focuses on bespoke shopfitting contracts, and some heritage work such as

sliding sash windows. Alphacam Advanced Router had a major impact on a heritage job – reducing work that would otherwise have taken Haxby around 50 hours, down to just 16 hours. “The client needed a fanlight frame above a door. We originally planned to produce each curved and straight bar individually, but Alphacam made it easy to machine it in one piece,” says Sam Haxby. Cabinet Vision is used mainly for designing and manufacturing components for Haxby’s bespoke restaurant and shop products, such as cupboards and laminated shelves, many of which, he says, can be completed in an hour. Waiter-points – where cutlery and serviettes are stored – are the mainstay of its restaurant work, and Sam Haxby says every component for the company goes through Cabinet Vision. “As soon as we know we need to produce

any type of cabinet or cupboard we turn to Cabinet Vision. It’s vital that all the parts coming off our CNC machine tools assemble together with no issue. “If we get the designs, stops and tool diameters right when we input everything, we know that everything created in Cabinet Vision will be faithfully reproduced on the CNC machine. It easily shaves a full day off the time taken to produce one waiter-point.” While Cabinet Vision’s powerful Screen-To-Machine module mainly drives the Anderson for nesting – with Alphacam programming its older Busellato to cut timber – both software packages can drive either machine, which he says is vital to manage Haxby’s variety of work in an effective and cost-effective way. Before installing Cabinet Vision, Sam Haxby provided drawings to the shop floor, which produced cutting lists from them. “In the early

days of Cabinet Vision it quickly became obvious how nesting would transform our business, even though we didn’t have the flat bed machine and were nesting on the Busellato. “That wasn’t ideal, as we were having to nest on the pods, and there wasn’t enough suction to pull the sheet through. So we had to nest it, take it off, trim it, and put it back on to finish the cutting. “And while that was better than before, when we got the Spectra the difference was more noticeable.” It also means the company has been able to take on work it couldn’t have done before. For example, Sam cites a case where a customer contacted him with an order for delivery that same day. “They needed two 600mm2 bar cupboards that were a metre in height. That would have been impossible with just a dimension

saw, even if we’d had an employee free to work on it immediately, as each would have taken around six hours. With Cabinet Vision both were done during the morning.” And Alphacam makes complex ceiling rafts child’s play. “We had a job at a restaurant at Heathrow Airport, featuring 12 different circles, where the drawings came in as a PDF. I’d normally expect a dxf or dwg file, but in this case I drew a series of radiuses from scratch in Alphacam and joined the geometries together. “I drew each circle to the correct radius and offset it. Then I just needed to ensure the outside radius fitted the sheets we were using. It took a couple of hours to come up with 12 different pieces that were a repeating pattern… Alphacam makes it so easy to break each raft down into individual components and then edit those components to the required size.” Once the toolpaths were created, he says nesting the rafts took around 30 seconds on nine 8ft x 4ft and six 5ft x 5ft sheets, then by tool selection. “Everything was saved onto one program, which took the operator around a day to run.” He also says Alphacam meant the company could work on another ceiling raft where the original contractor did not have the technology to do it. “There was

a shallow groove between each panel, and detailed curves around the corners. Also, one 4ft x 4ft panel contained a complex series of 1350 holes. No problem with Alphacam.” In conclusion, Sam Haxby recalls an early job with Cabinet Vision, where the number of display cabinets for a wine shop was suddenly doubled. “We’d priced it at £25,000 and everything was ready… but when the drawings came in, it was for £50,000 worth of work.” He says four different types of oak lipped, polished, cabinets were required, either as singles or repeated into doubles. “It took me a day to set them all out, as I was quite slow then… we’d only just commissioned the Anderson Spectra, and hadn’t used Cabinet Vision much. “But when we came to create the

NC code with Screen-To-Machine, the nesting process literally took about a minute. That was on the Friday – we got the 60 sheets of MDF that we needed on the Monday and every component was fully machined by the following Friday, just working one shift. And that included slotting in a couple of smaller, urgent, jobs. “There’s no way we could have done that without Cabinet Vision. It showed us how important the software was going to be to our business, right from the start. Cabinet Vision, Screen-To-Machine and Alphacam are vital and integral elements of our process now. They increase our capacity by getting products out of the door much quicker, and make a major contribution to our bottom line.” www.cabinetvision.com www.alphacam.com www.bahaxby.co.uk

18 Installation When Principal Doorsets decided it was time to expand its business and move to new premises in Barnstaple, Devon, it selected Air Plants Dust Extraction to supply and install the dust extraction system serving a Talbott’s Biomass Energy Systems MWE300 boiler plant.

Air Plants open the door for Principal In excess of an accumulated 550 years in the interior performance timber doorset supply market, Principal Doorsets is extremely proud of its position as one of the country’s leading doorset manufacturers. Having developed its expertise from a broad understanding of joinery and cabinetmaking industries, Prinicpal Doorsets offers beautifully finished, high performance interior products in most finishes and designs. The company seeks to deliver outstanding service and quality to its clients and taked pride in delivering on its commitments. Prinicpal Doorsets is a rapidly growing business with innovation and continual improvement at the heart of what it does. Investing in a partnerships for mutual benefit, with honesty and integrity whether that is to its customers, workforce or supply chain. At the new Barnstaple site, stateof-the-art woodworking machinery is employed in cutting, processing and finishing large quantities of timber based panels which, in turn, generates high levels of woodwaste. Stan Bond, director of Principal Doorsets, invited Air Plants to come up with a system that would cater for the relocated and additional machines, whilst keeping the overall costs to within their budgeted allowance. After careful consideration of Principal’s requirements, Air Plants came up with a scheme that involved the use of two refurbished modulair filters, along with new fans, ductwork and transfer system to the storage bunker of the Talbott’s boiler system. The installed system has a total airflow capacity of 57,000m3/hr, which is 50% greater capacity than the original system’s 37,000m3/ hr. The two new fans extract 37,000m3/hr and 20,000m3/hr each. The filtered air is returned to the factory to provide replacement

air for that being extracted. It also helps the boiler plant run more efficiently. The solid woodwaste created during cutting processes is dealt with by an Untha LR630 shredder, which reduces the waste to a chip that’s suitable for the boiler plant to handle. This waste is then transferred to the boiler via the

extraction plant. The control system supplied links a number of control panels together, with sequencing of the system start up and shutdown processed through a PLC. Stan Bond goes on to say: “We went out to completive tender on this latest project looking both separately and system-based.

There were not many that offer the joined-up solutions that Air Plants/Talbott’s do so the selection process was not difficult as there were only three suppliers that were of the quality we sought. “The communication and offer front end was exceptional. Staff from both Air Plants and Talbott’s worked on the optimal solution and convinced us that we ought to future-proof the installation with the appropriate boiler. We took on board their recommendations of boiler and extraction configuration and placed our order. “The product was on time as promised – the lead time was short as we wanted to get ready before moving in plant and equipment that would have hindered access had it been in place. The extraction filter boxes were fully overhauled and new filter sleeves fitted. We had a new fan and motor with a frequency controller fitted to optimise the running of the unit. The electronics were overhauled and linking of the two fan sets with stop, start and emergency stop circuits. The system runs really well and does precisely what was specified. “We now have a system that captures all of our process waste, whether that is directly extracted off the process or via a chipper that is connected into the woodwaste extraction system. There are signals to show when we are making too much that prompts us to slow the chipping of waste. “We have been running the boiler system now 24/7 mainly to manage our waste stream. This has been tremendously helpful to our processes and we have benefitted from quality improvement and process waste reduction – oh, and the workforce are comfortable too, we have hot air heat in the factory when required, hot water and hot water piped to our radiators keeping us all comfortable.” www.airplants.co.uk www.talbotts.co.uk www.principaldoorsets.com

New Centauro ALFA Twin CNC milling machine for doors and frames

Following on from the very successful Centauro ALFA CNC milling/slotting machine, of which more than 60 have been installed in the UK to date, Centauro has introduced the all-new ALFA Twin model which is a dedicated CNC milling machine for internal doors and frames. The main advantage of the Twin over the standard machine is that a door can be simultaneously machined on both sides at the same time without having to manually move it or turn it. The result is a machined door with three hinge recesses, lock slot, face plate recess and handle/key hole in approximately two minutes. In addition it is also possible to machine two linings/jambs, again both at the same time. As standard the ALFA Twin is equipped with six adjustable vacuum cups to hold the door in position whilst it is being machined. By utilising this system it means both sides of the door can be fully machined without having to take in to account the position of mechanical or pneumatic clamps, which of course are not needed. For machining of the lock slot and drilling/ slotting for the handle hole/key slot there is a router head that automatically works in either the vertical or horizontal and has a travel distance in the X axis of 2800mm and in the Y axis of 150mm, although optionally this can be extended to 600mm. On the opposite side there is a horizontal milling head that is used for producing the

hinge recesses, again with a 2800mm X axis travel. On request it is possible to equip either one or both sides with an additional horizontal milling head that can be used to make the small pilot hole for hinge or lock screws and/or to machine a square corner hinge or lock recess. When processing linings/jambs adjustable pneumatic clamps are fitted. Programming is extremely quick and simple thanks to the latest generation 10in graphic colour touch screen controller with pre-installed electronic macro templates. Door width working capacity is maximum 950mm and minimum 650mm, but optionally this can be increased to 1100mm and 800mm respectively. Other options include motorised positioning of the door on driven belts, infeed and outfeed roller tables and an uprated router head motor of 5.6kW. Exclusive UK agent JJ Smith will have an ALFA Twin set up and available for demonstration at its Liverpool showroom from the beginning of February. The company believes this competitively priced machine will prove ideal for the many companies that need a quick, simple and efficient machine for processing doors and linings. In addition to offering the ALFA and Twin models, JJ Smith also supplies a range of throughfeed, high volume door production lines from specialist manufacturer Essepegi. 0151 548 9000 www.jjsmith.co.uk

BFM outlines possible no-deal Brexit ramifications

The BFM has summarised a recent Government publication on the trading measures that would need to be put in place in the event of a no-deal Brexit, highlighting those aspects most relevant to the furniture industry. In summary, says the association, if they wish to continue trading with the EU, businesses will have to apply the same customs rules to goods moving between the UK and the EU as are currently applied in cases where goods move between the UK and a country outside of the EU. This means that the EU would require customs declarations on goods coming from or going to the UK, as well as requiring separate safety and security declarations for imports into the EU. Duty will be payable on certain goods, and changes will occur to VAT collections. The guide identifies the steps companies need to take – whether that is when it comes to importing

materials or exporting furniture. It contains links to publications and sites where more information can be obtained, and addresses particular issues that affect certain products. Mike Dimond, the BFM’s director of membership affairs, says: “A lot of the required new trading measures cannot be put in place overnight and if companies are concerned, they need to think about taking action now to prepare for a no-deal potential. Not only in making sure they have all the right import and export registrations and documentation but are aware as well of issues such as those that relate to products that require a CE marking and third-party testing, as these will now need to receive a certificate of conformance from an EU-based approved centre if the goods are to be sold in the EU.” The guide is available to BFM members via the BFM website.

Perfect 10 for new Lamello Tenso connector The brand new Tenso P-10 connector from Lamello is now available in the UK. The self-clamp connector has been designed as a unique gluing aid that not only alleviates the need for screws, clamps and presses but also gives the user the flexibility to glue thin materials (from just 12mm in thickness) with no visible joins. The new design, which is the latest addition to the P-system family, has been developed to work with 45° mitre joints from a material thickness of 15mm and 90° butt joints from a panel thickness of 12mm. The cleverly designed clip system,

which can be used on wood-based panels, high press laminates and solid timber, also offers a high clamping force of 100 Newtons for nononsense, fast assembly, making it ideal for use on furniture that needs to be delivered pre-glued. Shaye Chatfield, area sales manager for Lamello UK says: “The Tenso P-10 is a welcome addition to the P-system family. Unlike its big brother, the Tenso P-14, the new Tenso P-10 has been designed to work with thinner materials. Made from glass fibre reinforced plastic, its robust design incorporates eight fingers – the P-14 has six – to offer superior strength when

used in a shallow cut. Being able to use the connector on thinner panels, whilst not being restricted by strength or durability, means it can be used on a wider range of applications and offers furniture manufacturers even more design scope.” The new Tenso P-10 is available in 80, 300 or 1000 pair options with preload clips from Lamello distributors nationwide. Why use one inch timber rivet tee nuts from Jet Press? Established since 1977, Jet Press supplies and supports tee nut insertion systems to many of the UK’s top furniture manufacturers. One inch timber rivet tee nuts provide a fast, deeper and straighter tee nut insertion, helping to achieve a superior quality product whilst maintaining production efficiency. However, this has not always been the case. Standard knock-in tee nuts have been around for many years. These are still widely used wherever a simple but effective thread is required in timber. Nevertheless, industry demands have prompted the humble tee nut to evolve. Jet Press’s manufacturing partner, Sigma, has been at the forefront of this evolution. During the 1960s the first four-prong tee nut with its familiar eight sides was manufactured by Sigma. Tee nuts could be fed efficiently and reliably by machine thus improving speed, accuracy and productivity. Nonetheless, furniture manufacturers faced problems in certain applications with pushout. This was costly to manufacturers as repairs, re-upholstery and scrapping of the furniture was a regular issue. There are many advantages for using 25.5mm rivet tee nuts on one inch timber applications. Greater strength and pull-

through resistance combined with a large head, results in a faster, deeper and straighter tee nut insertion. Manufactured from cold forged, thicker gauge steel, these one inch timber rivet tee nuts are typically used in the foot and castor applications, where the extra hold-in is crucial. The metal prongs prevent rotation and the unthreaded rivet portion flares to increase the holding power of the tee nut. The result is a great lead-in and better retention of the castors, legs or feet which then screw into the threaded tee nut. Additionally there is the benefit from the tee nut resisting push-out along with easier assembly and eliminating the requirement for over-stapling. Jet Press carries extensive stock in a wide variety of sizes and designs to ensure it is well placed to manage tee nut requirements along with the availability of tee nut insertion machines. 01623 551 800 www.jetpress.com

Tekform drawers

Titus launches space-efficient slimline drawer range Cabinet hardware expert Titus has launched a second-generation range of its popular Tekform double-wall drawers. The new slimline versions feature a sleek and visually-appealing design, and have 14 mm side panels that maximise efficient utilisation of drawer space. They also incorporate the precision engineered Titus hydraulic dampers to ensure a reliable and consistent soft closing action, combined with low pull-out force.

Tekform slimline drawers are available in three heights – 70, 145 and 182mm – and can be supplied in a range of visually appealing finishes that ideally complement contemporary furniture designs. A further key benefit is that they use the same drilling pattern for runners as their predecessors, which facilitates mounting in existing products and designs. Drawers are fast and easy to assemble, thanks to the EasyFix locking system used for the front-

Tekform slimline drawer with new damper

panel connector, which requires only hand insertion and a quarter of a turn with a screwdriver to lock the panel securely in place. Dependable soft closing Reliable life-long ConfidentClose soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned Titus singledirection precision-engineered hydraulic dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement of the drawer as it reaches the closed position but offer minimal

resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened. Installation of the drawers within the cabinet is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to Âą1mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable. www.titusplus.com

38 Saws, blades and cutting technology

A Striebig double act Independent timber merchant, Bates Timber, has invested in two Standard TRK2 Striebig vertical panel saws in the last 18 months from leading machinery distributor, TM Machinery. Following a move to new premises that saw the Coventry-based company more than double in size and an increased demand for cut-tosize boards, investing in reliable and accurate machinery that would stand the test of time was a top priority for the growing business. “As an independent timber merchant, we are geared towards offering a great service to our

customers,” begins Peter Bates, owner of Bates Timber. “We work with both the trade and the general public, meaning our day-to-day jobs vary massively in size. Our saws could be used to cut a single sheet of MDF or resize several thousand plywood boards for a production job. With such variation in our work, we needed to invest in a bigger and better saw that could offer us more capabilities and help us with an increasing number of orders.” Having researched the Striebig brand online and experienced live demonstrations of the

range at the woodworking machinery and materials show, W16, Peter placed his order and the saw was installed quickly and put to good use immediately in Bates’ original unit on Foleshill Road, Coventry. As well as offering Striebig’s unparalleled precision of 0.1mm, a powerful, high-torque 5.5kW motor (7.5hp), a 300/30mm carbide circular saw blade and integral TRK extraction system, the popular TRK2 model also benefits from an automatically yielding aluminium support frame with plastic supports for simple

and controlled cutting. A year later, Bates Timber purchased new premises on a 1.3 acre site. “We had been in our old unit for over 25 years and we had simply outgrown it,” explains Peter. “We were at a stage where we would have had to have turned business away if we had stayed put. The new site is more than double the size, as is our brand new machinery shop. Our processes have always run smoothly so it made sense to replicate the old unit and double-up on machinery. After experiencing our first Striebig for 12 months and seeing just how robust it was, I knew another Striebig vertical panel saw would be a sound investment for the business.” Moving to bigger premises and purchasing a second Striebig vertical panel saw couldn’t have come at a better time for the merchant, as demand for bulk production was steadily increasing. “We found ourselves having to break down the saw when working on jobs that required two or

three thousand pieces of MDF or plywood to be cut-to-size at one time in order to service walk-in customers who would want a single sheet re-sized while they waited,” admits Peter. “The introduction of a second Striebig vertical panel saw – this time chosen with a larger bed to work with jumbo sheets – gave us the flexibility to deal with these requests much more efficiently. Now we use both machines concurrently to minimise

interruptions and productivity. It’s also given us the resources we need to build on this revenue stream in the future.” Keen to work with local companies wherever possible, Peter built a solid relationship with the TM Machinery’s team. “The service we received from TM Machinery was faultless,” admits Peter. “They offered us sound advice and both machines were delivered, off-loaded and assembled with minimal fuss. I

couldn’t fault their knowledge and understanding of both the machinery brand or the industry, and I’d recommend them to anyone looking to purchase a vertical panel saw.” Operational training was given once the machine was fully installed by TM Machinery’s experienced engineers and an annual service plan was put in place in order to maintain the saw’s optimal performance. Peter adds: “The two Striebig saws were a big up-front investment for us but when you’ve got two machines that you know will continue to perform solidly year-on-year for the next decade, the investment will pay for itself. They also have the performance capabilities to grow with the company and to undertake a wide range of jobs quickly and effectively. I’m a firm believer in the phrase, ‘you get what you pay for’ and in my mind, there isn’t a better example of this than a Striebig.” www.tmmachinery.co.uk www.batestimber.co.uk

43 Excitement is brewing as Lawcris launches 12 desirable brand new PerfectSense decors to add to the existing range from Egger - a premium category of high gloss and matt lacquered MDF boards.

It makes PerfectSense – PLUS so much more Egger’s PerfectSense range has gained a lot of momentum over the years, picking up a clutch of European awards for its super-smooth MDF boards with premium matt and gloss finishes. Platinum distributors, Lawcris Panel Products, stock the whole collection, but last year saw an opportunity. Dean Carroll, Lawcris procurement manager, explains: “We are finding high-gloss finishes with contrasting matt textures very popular at the moment. The PerfectSense collection seems to be the range that everyone wants to get their hands on. “The gloss surface shows exceptional depth and has a glass-like finish, unlike anything we have seen on the market. But perhaps one of the highlights for this range is the anti-fingerprint surface of the matt boards which makes them ideal for many spaces in the home. “Whilst the feedback from the current range is very positive, the boards are so good that our customers want more options. Working hand-in-hand with Egger, we came up with 12 additional decors to add to the range which provide even more definition and interest, named PerfectSense PLUS.” Lawcris have launched a selection of grey tones, aqua shades and industrial surfaces to complement the current range. Each decor is available in the PerfectSense Matt and Gloss finish. Dean continues: “Cool, contemporary greys are gaining prominence within interior design, whilst warm, yet natural greys, such as taupe, are also starting to come through. In response, we have added five new grey tones to the collection. We have also introduced various aqua shades into this range, giving designs an often-needed injection of colour. Finally, whilst solid colours continue to dominate (particularly in the form of frontals) material finishes are gaining traction, with people looking for something a little different. Industrial materials add tactility and interest to the overall design and this is where decors such as concrete and bronze come to life for a highend look and feel - something our customers have been chasing us for.”

44 Edgebanding materials & technology Furniture made of waste wood or furniture with visible signs of usage are in line with market trends. They create ambience and give modern rooms a particular, authentic flair. Ostermann has the matching edgings for the construction of this type of furniture.

For furniture that tells a story – chosen edgings in vintage look In times in which our surroundings are changing faster, our possibilities become increasingly complex, and our reality more and more digital, we often long for something rather old, familiar and nostalgic in our home; for furniture that is telling a story. Yet, not everyone wants granny’s smelly old chest of drawers or her old kitchen cabinet in their property. With the latest surfaces in vintage look as well as the matching edgings and fittings from Ostermann, you can create modern furniture that combines the longing for nostalgia with modern functionality. Waste wood look The colour has faded or peeled off, great parts of the layer of wood below can be seen. Dark abrasion and sanding marks attest the surface’s advanced age. Ostermann’s ABS edging – Vintage wooden structured – makes new

furniture look old in no time. They are available in the dimensions 23, 33, 43 and 100 x 1mm. Rusty iron Thanks to the latest trend, rusty furniture elements can still provide service. They have quite a disadvantage, though: the rust is staining, crumbling, and sometimes continues to corrode. Therefore, there is a number of furniture surfaces with rust décors that imitate the unique look as well as the special feel of rust. Ostermann recommends the ABS edging, Rust Ceramic Stone finish. It is available in widths of 23, 33, 43 and 100mm and in thicknesses of 1 or 2mm. Oak with signs of wear For those wishing to create furniture with a little less visible signs of usage, perhaps take a look at the Vintage Oak wooden structured ABS

edging. Subtle, dark sanding marks have been added to the classic darkened oak décor. The edging does not only convince with its realistic look, but also with its special feel of a wooden structure. It is available in widths of 23, 33, 43 and 100mm and in thicknesses of 1 and 2mm. Edgings from one metre For furniture edgings with trend décors, an order per metre is always more profitable, as unnecessary remaining amounts and expensive storage costs can be avoided. For carpenters, joiners and cabinetmakers that need other than the standard widths, Ostermann can cut a 100mm edging to any desired width upon request. All stock articles ordered before 4pm are delivered within 24 hours. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu No matter if waste wood, rust or signs of wear. With these trend edgings from Ostermann, you can create modern furniture in cutting-edge vintage look

Be sure your furniture is always perfect with Hranipex Hranipex apprectiates attention to detail, this is why the edgebanding specialist is introducing its anti-metamerism edges. According to Hranipex, this will make the colour of a board and edging look absolutely identical under any light customers choose to shed on them. Hranipex says it has added a layer ensuring that its edges match the board under any light – this is its solution to metamerism. It might sound familiar – customers select the board colour in simulated daylight, however when checking it under a fluorescent lamp in their workshop, it suddenly looks different. When changing the light to typical office lighting the board will turn to shades of red and the edge will react differently, this is known as metamerism. According to Hranipex, this won’t take its customers or end-consumers by surprise again. With its antimetamerism solution, Hranipex can assure that its edges have the same colour as the board under every light condition. Hranipex says no matter what type of light there is, its new wood décors will match the furniture perfectly with any light source provided. Thanks to specially-

developed edges you can now eliminate metamerism problems. The anti-metamerism effect is available in all new wood décor edges made specifically for the new Kronospan Global Collection. Hranipex customers can now benefit from the advantages of deep co-operation between two professional businesses. CAMCO REINVENTING THE PLYWOOD LOOK PVC plywood effect edge banding has been in our market for a long time. It imitates the edge of a plywood board and transfers that effect into a particle board. In Camco we have improved the current PVC plywood edge banding to get a more realistic effect on melamine boards. We offer a traditional plywood PVC edge banding that imitates the edge of real plywood made of wood. Our collection also includes PVC edge banding with metallic colours: copper and aluminium. All of our references are perfect to create contrast with plain-coloured melamine, wood, marble or concrete designs.

52 Updates An international manufacturing company has purchased two wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology to reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating for its UK HQ in Rugby.

Two new wood waste heaters for manufacturing company’s UK headquarters PERI Ltd is a family business that was founded in 1969 and has grown steadily to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of formwork and scaffolding. When the UK head office experienced heating issues, national facilities manager, Kevin Joyce, started to investigate some alternatives. Whilst visiting a supplier and having a tour of

the premises Kevin saw one of Wood Waste Technology’s wood waste heaters in operation. The heater came highly recommended by the supplier, so Kevin took a photo of the manufacturer’s sticker on the heater and contacted Wood Waste Technology for more information. MD at Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft

provided more technical information and customer references, and visited the site in Rugby to provide a survey and quotation. Kevin explains: “As a business, we generate a lot of timber waste, which we end up paying to dispose of. The workshop was a freezing place to work in the cold months, and our heating costs were constantly rising with the increase in fuel costs. We started some calculations to work out what savings could be made if we invested in a wood waste heater. “Once we added it all up, it was a no-brainer. We calculated that we’d pay back our investment on each wood waste heater in only 18 months, so we placed an order!” PERI ordered two WT15s, one for each end of the large 20,000ft2 workshop, which were installed by Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers in 2018. Now, PERI’s UK head office is benefiting from being able to convert all its wood waste to heat, as the wood waste heater provides a free, environmentally-friendly facility to heat the factory whilst saving the company vast amounts of money on waste disposal fees. Kevin says: “We’re delighted that we chose Wood Waste Technology as our supplier. The customer service, from our initial point of contact through to the engineers who installed the heater has been excellent, and the wood waste heater certainly delivers everything we were promised. The workshop has gone from being the coldest place to being the warmest place to work, and the team are overjoyed!” Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted that we could assist PERI to help the business lower its operational costs by saving money on heating and waste disposal.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various sizes and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

West Midlands mayor visits Kite Packaging operation Employee-owned packaging business, Kite Packaging, welcomed West Midlands mayor, Andy Street, to its regional distribution centre in Coventry before Christmas. The team at Kite Packaging showed Mr Street around its day-to-day operations and give him a deeper insight into the Kite brand. The organisation, which has expanded its Coventry operation and earned a place on the Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Barometer earlier this year, is set for continued growth as it goes into 2019. With a regional branch network across the UK, this Coventrybased business also has sites in Rotherham, Swindon, Letchworth, Sittingbourne Portsmouth and Gateshead, as well as an Environmental Compliance business and a leading ecommerce offering. Coventry and Warwickshire’s Growth Hub’s strategic account manager, Phil Peak, joined staff as Mr Street explored Kite’s Coventry base and met with some of its employees. Kite’s key founding principle of a sense of partnership being at the heart of every good longterm relationship has laid solid foundations as the Kite brand has grown over its 18 year history. Kite’s hard work and dedication to its sector did not go amiss, with Mr Street describing it as “a hidden gem in the Coventry economy.” Managing partner, Gavin Ashe said: “On behalf of all the staff and partners at Kite Packaging, we’d like to thank Andy Street for the time he gave us. It was great to be able to talk about the opportunities and difficulties that we all face.”

Starting the new year with a bang thanks to new packaging solutions Kite Packaging, has introduced new heat sealers, furniture bags and attached lid containers to its extensive online portfolio. The release of the company’s new products is a further statement to the Kite brand as it continues to grow and evolve its ecommerce offering. Their new, basic table top heat sealers are the ideal solution for a range of businesses that are looking to seal plastics and polythene. Whether organisations are looking to keep items dust-free in storage, transit or instore, these sealing agents can cater for all. Their cost-effective heat sealing is designed for low volume sealing of polythene packaging, making them ideal for the smaller user. To allow for a wider range of polythene furniture bag protection, Kite has also added its new footstool and two-seater covers. When it comes to the transit stages for larger, heavier stock, finding the right packing solution is a pivotal part to ensure they get from A to B in the exact same condition

they left the warehouse. Therefore the Kite team has expanded its furniture bag range, providing the

necessary shielding from external dirt or dust. Next, the UK packaging supplier

has brought a new attached lid container to market, a heavy duty, robust plastic container which is suitable for a wide range of industries. These reusable solutions provide safe and efficient handling of goods in the warehouse and ensure space optimisation thanks to their stackable features. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Best practises for spraying in cold weather

February is statistically the cruellest month in the UK for cold weather and can present a series of issues for those who regularly use lacquers. However, developing a deeper understanding of how low temperatures affect lacquer application and storage can help professionals be better prepared. In an ideal world, lacquers should be applied in temperatures between 16-20°C for best results – but with temperatures averaging around 5°C, this simply isn’t possible. As temperatures drop, lacquers become more viscous, making it harder for them to stick to surfaces, meaning excessive thinning is often required. To compensate, finishers often spray heavier coats in an attempt to maintain a wet film. This results in a higher film build which exceeds

the recommended levels, resulting in a range of potential issues, including poor colour uniformity, to increased downtime for drying. Here are Redwood Innovations’ best practice tips for mitigating the challenges of colder weather: Preparing surfaces Cold surfaces can create further problems for lacquer effectively adhering, but there are some ways to minimise this. Specifically, be sure to give your surfaces a thorough wipe down before applying lacquer, looking out for any ice or extra moisture which may affect the finish later on. It’s also a good idea to check the surface with a thermometer prior to spraying – especially in premises that aren’t heated. This will help to minimise adhesion problems.

Preparing equipment If you’re leaving a job overnight, it is essential you check your spraying equipment before using it again the next day. In cold weather, ice can build up inside guns; which can cause jamming and clogging, or even worse, break equipment completely. Additionally, if using solvent-based products, you could consider adding pump armour to prevent potential freezing of material in your spray equipment. Proper storage In warmer months, storing your equipment and finishing products in outdoor structures, such as garages, needn’t be an issue. However, as the weather gets colder, these areas are often the least insulated and build up excess moisture – which can cause

irreversible damage to equipment and supplies. A temperaturecontrolled environment is always best – but if this isn’t possible, be sure to keep supplies away from colder areas, such as concrete floors and uninsulated walls. Always check your products are properly sealed before putting them into storage. Redwood Innovations is an established and trusted UK supplier, with extensive experience supplying to the marine, furniture and shopfitting manufacturing industries. To find out more about its extensive range of Hesse lacquers and best practise for spraying in the colder weather, call one of its technical experts. 02392 233310 www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk

2018 – another successful year for Kündig 2018 was yet another successful year for Kündig UK Ltd, with sales of both wide-belt and edge sanders to satisfied customers. The company’s appearance at the W18 exhibition also proved popular, with many genuine enquiries to be followed up. The edge sander range has proved particularly popular this year. One satisfied customer is Gary Tuddenham, managing director of Parabola Workshops Ltd, for whom “quality is everything”. Parabola operates predominantly in the superyacht industry and residential homes. “Our work is bespoke, one-offs: we very rarely do anything twice,” Gary says. “We can be working on a project for up to three to four months on a single item.” To maintain the high standards of quality, Gary invested in a made-to-measure Kündig Uniq-S edge sander. Gary chose Kündig “because of the build quality and the reputation. There are a couple of other manufacturers that do a similar machine but it wasn’t quite the same. For the accuracy we were looking at, the sander had to be built correctly, with tiny tolerances. It had to be a rigid quality machine. “It is very convenient. We have the edge sander in the hand workshop rather than the machine workshop. It is there when you need it, right next to the work benches.” While space was not an issue, Gary adds:

“It is a nice compact machine.” Gary selected various options, including a grooved infeed platen to allow the sanding off of veneers that have been overlaid after edging; a second transport belt to allow sanding of the ends of narrow panels; a two-speed motor to allow finer grade abrasives to be used; a bobbin attachment allowing internal and external curves to be sanded; and a semi round table allowing the sanding of shapes using the rubber coated drive roller on the machine. Asking if he would recommend the Uniq-S sander, Gary replies: “Yes, definitely. It does everything we expected it to do.” He added: “Carl [O’Meara of Kündig UK Ltd] is perfect: you can talk to him, no problem, and he will give you good advice.” Doig Furniture, a manufacturer of luxury bespoke furniture and cabinetry for the high-end residential market, purchased a Kündig Uniq-S edge sander from Kündig agent Markfield Woodworking Machinery (MWM) late in 2017. Doig Furniture managing director, Duncan Doig, told Furniture & Joinery Production: “Kündig as a brand is the go-to for high-end sanding equipment. Everybody is using the sander and everyone is pleased with it.” The Kündig Uniq S has proved a significant time saver. “It has

enabled us to carry out processes we were previously doing by hand in a much quicker time frame,” says Duncan. “It gives a consistent finish on every panel and is a much more efficient way of working. The machine is versatile, is double sided and tilts. We have some optional extras, and will probably add to them down the line.” Among the options selected, Duncan identifies the power feed as something which drew him towards Kündig: “The machine was designed to do the process we were looking to do.” He may also add the bobbin sander attachment in the future, the advantage of which is it allows work on curves to be carried out. “We typically use the sander to edge sand boards or components in general. The main reason we bought the machine was the edge sanding capabilities. Equally, the reverse of the machine is an

open belt sander, so we use that for shaping as well. The ability to shape is an added bonus, which you would expect from that kind of quality machine,” says Duncan. The Kündig wide-belt sanders, including both the Premium and Brilliant ranges, have also proved popular, especially at the W18 exhibition. Demonstrations included the advantages of Kündig’s unique sanding method: “The part where we have a purposely damaged sanding belt and show the difference between traditional ‘straight line’ sanding which shows the defect as opposed to oblique sanding giving a perfect finish always amazes people, especially those that have a constant struggle with their existing straight line sanders,” says Kündig UK’s Carl O’Meara. 0845 833 0565 sales@kundig.co.uk www.kundig.co.uk

Norduct – the modular ductwork specialist

Manufacturing modular clipped ductwork began in 1992 in a 3000ft2 workshop, which housed all the usual standard sheet metal working machinery. Today, the business is run by Bill Belcher, operations director, who has successfully grown Norduct to be the only complete manufacturer of seam welded rolled edged modular clipped ductwork in the UK. Some 26 years of manufacturing quality products to tight schedules and delivering on time has taught Norduct the importance of understanding customer requirements. Today, the manufacturing facility bears no resemblance to the early days with automation and a flexible labour force being cornerstones of its success. To produce quality products on a 24 hour turnaround with competitive prices, the company realised that CNC automated machinery was the only way forward and it made the decision to not rely on external supplies. The first CNC-operated machine to be purchased was an automatic roll-firming one to manufacture the connecting clips for the rolled edge ductwork. This was purchased

in 2001 together with a press for manufacturing the handles and a selection of punches to complete the process required. This investment proved an immediate success with prices being very competitive and Norduct not reliant on outside suppliers. With this advantage, several opportunities arose to supply clips to other rolled edge ductwork manufacturers, particularly in North America, where several thousand are dispatched every month to various clients in the USA. The next major step was to automate the

manufacturing of all straight ductwork to improve quality and speed up production. This proved to be a harder task than first anticipated, but after an extensive search, a manufacturer in Austria came up with the solution. Since 2007, all straight ductwork is now manufactured from a steel coil where the steel is straightened, cut to length and rolled – all automatically by CNC controlled machines – before being seam welded on an automatic welding machine. The complete process to manufacture one length of duct now takes only two and a half minutes with far greater accuracy and quality than that achieved with the old manufacturing process. All other manufactured items such as bends, taper branches, transformation pieces etc, are made on other CNC-operated machinery such as the plasma cutter and bend-forming machine. Today, from a 22,000ft2 manufacturing facility, Norduct supplies ductwork to UK and European markets, to various industries including joinery, woodworking, textile, printing, paper, food and others. 01274 693630 www.norduct.com

NBF comments on new Government waste and resources strategy The National Bed Federation (NBF) has welcomed the Government’s new waste and resources strategy. The report specifically mentions mattresses, stating that manufacturers could have to pay for dealing with those that are sent to landfill in order to encourage more recycling. Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF, says: “We welcome the announcement and the opportunity to work with the Government on reducing the number of mattresses going into landfill. The NBF has its own Circular Economy Committee which recently announced a target to divert 75% of mattresses from landfill by 2028. We would like to achieve this sooner, but the average mattress is replaced every 10 years. “We have also been working with mattress recyclers, retailers and local authorities on a Register of Approved Mattress Recyclers to ensure high standards of good practice are encouraged and followed. “We believe that, ultimately, a well-designed Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme is the most likely solution, and we are keen to work with Government on that. If we are going to increase the rates of recycling immediately (they

are currently about 15%), costs will inevitably increase and who should pay for that is an important question. “It is too early to say how much and by what mechanism, but one thing we will be looking at is how mattresses are designed and constructed, to make it easier to disassemble and recycle them – which might mean costs aren’t, in the end, any more than they are now.

And it’s not just about end-of-life management – some of our members have been working on designs with the most sustainable materials, and some even have their own sheep whose wool is used exclusively for mattresses.”
