Comment As we begin to feel the coming summer’s warmth, those of us who can suffer with Seasonally Affective Disorder (SAD) or ‘winter’s depression’ will hopefully be finding the longer, warmer days more appealing. And then you watch and listen to the depressing and distressing news – and it can all seem quite disheartening. But you don’t have to look far to witness things that will warm the heart and cheer us all up: it was two years ago in March when the last pre-pandemic trade show took place, KBB Birmingham. This year’s cheery report from KBB presents a picture of positivity which seems to have underpinned many businesses – both suppliers and manufacturers – in our sector which have benefited from changing circumstances and perspectives. Elsewhere in this issue, and another reason to be cheerful! We hear from the 100-yearold German machinery manufacturer which has been designing and producing what it describes as ‘market-shaping, high-quality woodworking machines’. We look back over the decades with Martin to understand what keeps this classy outfit in such fine fettle. This issue also delivers on an aspirational level too as it bears witness to one of the world’s, finest bespoke furniture designers and manufacturers, Silverlining Furniture. Fresh from opening its training academy, we take a special look at how to design furniture for yachts with their expert opinion. Throughout the magazine, and on our website, you will find hundreds if not thousands of positive reads to provide inspiration in terms of materials and machinery. On browsing this month’s issue, I sure your eye will fall upon a promotional message regarding The Furniture & Joinery Conference, a new, and in my opinion, much-needed event where delegates can come together to discuss key issues of the day, celebrate the best in our sector, network with peers and catch up on the latest trade news – this one-day event in October is already garnering strong support. I hope you enjoy the read.

REHAU invests in the future with Decorative Panels Lamination REHAU’s furniture division has adapted its business strategy to circumnavigate the fallout from Brexit and Coronavirus and ensure its UK customers continue to receive its high-quality edgeband, surface and tambour door solutions. 2021 was another successful year for REHAU as the company continued to build awareness around its innovative and on-trend kitchen, bathroom and furniture solutions. With its diverse product portfolio, the company expanded its reach in the market, working with large original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), small and medium and manufacturers, design workshops and fitters. To further address this demand in 2022, REHAU is now collaborating with reputable manufacturer and distributor Decorative Panels Lamination, based in the North of England. This new partnership will allow REHAU to grow its UK presence and facilitate the more efficient supply of materials across the country. “We’re thrilled to be working alongside Decorative Panels Lamination who have long established themselves as leaders within the sector,” comments national sales manager, Scott Williams. “Having been in the industry for over 100 years, manufacturing and distributing laminated sheet materials throughout the UK,

the company are the ideal choice for REHAU’s furniture division. “Decorative Panels Lamination will be holding large amounts of our stock, including our popular and award-winning Rauvisio noble matt range, meaning the supply will be readily available for UK-based manufacturers and fitters.” Although some businesses have suffered because of the pandemic and the UK’s exit from the EU, REHAU was able to defy the odds and grow its UK furniture business significantly last year. This was against a backdrop of general trade decreasing by 23.1% in the first quarter of 2021. enquires@rehau.com

Homag and Heesemann agree to partnership

Homag Group AG and Karl Heesemann Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG have already been working together successfully for several years and in many markets. Now the two companies have agreed on an even more extensive cooperation. Homag’s goal is clear: to continue to provide customers with highperformance solutions and an integrated sanding machine portfolio. End-to-end sanding machine portfolio to be retained The scope of Homag’s product portfolio has grown considerably in recent years. At the same time, high demand from a large number of customer segments and growth

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 12

areas requires a bundling of resources in the areas of R&D and production. For this reason, Homag has decided to discontinue inhouse development and production of wide belt sanding machines. However, the strategic goal of Homag to cover the entire process chain in wood processing, which naturally includes sanding, remains constant. Therefore, instead of Homag’s own solutions, those of Heesemann will now be made available. “Covering the entire process chain and the associated satisfaction of our customers is our focus,” says Frederik Meyer, Executive Vice President, CNC Processing Business Unit. “In Heesemann, we have found the ideal partner to

Christoph Giese, MD Karl Heesemann Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG (left), and Frederik Meyer, Executive Vice President, HOMAG Business Unit CNC Processing (right)

continue providing our customers with end-to-end solutions for sanding and to cover the entire process chain.” In order to continue covering the entire process chain, Heesemann will expand its sanding machine portfolio and offer end-to-end solutions for all segments in the future: from entry-level to highend solutions. For the entry-level machines in particular, Heesemann will be drawing on Homag’s expertise. Homag and Heesemann will also be working closely together in the sales and service network. “We at Heesemann are very excited about this great prospect for both companies,” says Christoph Giese, MD, Heesemann.

“It is a unique opportunity to take our long-standing partnership to a new level and once again demonstrate our expertise and innovative strength for the benefit of our customers.” Service for Homag sanding machines will continue to be provided Homag will of course continue to provide service (hotline, on-site service and spare parts), for the sanding machines supplied under the Bütfering and Homag brands. For the sanding machines supplied by Heesemann in the future, Heesemann will take over the corresponding service. www.homag.com www.heesemann.de/en/

Containing your investment Chris Franklin, MD of Ranheat Engineering Ltd, continues his series of articles exclusive to Furniture and Joinery Production Magazine. February 2022 will go down in history as to Russia invading Ukraine. It also marked the highest fuel prices at the pumps and highest $ prices for decades for oil per barrel. There has never been a better reason to invest in the utilisation of your own industrial wood waste in a boiler or heater. Having made the investment, you need to protect it from the weather. Ranheat has offered “turn key” solutions for Biomass plants for over 40 years. In Denmark they were known as “transcons”; literally “transportable containers”. Depending on the size of the combustion equipment they may or may not fit a standard shipping container, but a “high cube” version can be used. As you can see from the photo, extra doors and apertures can be added. If a good solid concrete foundation is in place, then a steel framed building without a built-in floor can be used. Ranheat designs, builds and installs a wide range of purpose made buildings to house its extensive range of equipment. So, having made the decision to go with a biomass fired system, how much waste is needed to make it economical to burn? There

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 16

are two main factors to consider when looking at savings to be made: • How much am I going to spend on heating my factory in the winter of 2022/23? Chances are it could be six times what you paid in 2021/22. • How much waste am I sending to landfill? £96.70 per tonne is the current tax rate, plus gate charges, plus transport, say £150.00 per tonne. Other influencers are reaching carbon neutrality, demonstrating a green front to your customers and moral responsibility for your waste and your product. The yield on wood waste is generally accepted as being 3,200kW hours per tonne (this takes into account a boiler’s efficiency). So, if you produce five tonnes per week, it’s 16,000kW hours per week. Let’s take as an example a cost of 8-11p (projected as being 50-60p per kW hour). Four tonnes of wood waste is 16,000kwh or £640 per week at 40p for gas. Over a heating season of 30 weeks that’s a potential saving of £19,200 per year. Four tonnes per week, 50 weeks of the year @£150.00/tonne = £30,000 per year. Add to this labour savings through not handling the dust and you can easily make savings of close to £50,000 per year.

So what size heater or boiler do I need? Well a 150kW unit can dispose of six tonnes per week, allowing for down time and routine maintenance. How much would a 150kW plant cost? Depending on the level of automation, significantly less than £100,000. For more information on how to start saving, call 01604 750005, email sales@ranheat.com or visit www.ranheat.com.

New format sees BFM Fabric Show London get the seal of approval

The quality of enquiries from buyers, coupled with a significant increase in exhibitors, saw the BFM Fabric Show London 2022 move up a gear at its new location. The British Furniture Manufacturers made the decision to move the premium B2B show to the ILEC Conference Centre, near to Earls Court, to offer increased capacity and space, as well as greater opportunities for more fabric suppliers to showcase their

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 18

very latest products. Initial feedback from both the buyers within the international furniture community, and the 40-plus exhibitors in attendance, points to a successful reception for the event’s new format, according to BFM. The move to make it a hosted, invite-only show enabled exhibitors to showcase their products to a key, professional audience, while the 30% increace in exhibitors

ensured that buyers were offered an unrivalled exhibition experience to source high quality, contemporary fabrics for upholstery, bed, and soft furnishings. The show ran for two days from 8-9th March, attracting UK and international prestigious fabric suppliers, drawing in worldrenowned manufacturers and suppliers from Belgium, as well as Italy, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Germany and the UK. Fabrics on show includes wools, tweeds, velvets, cottons, linens, chenilles, silks, leathers, faux leathers, backing fabrics and FR treatments. The latest fabric protection and cleaning treatments were also presented. “We are very pleased with the feedback from exhibitors and buyers and feel the new format has really hit the mark,” comments Sean Holt, BFM MD. “We await more details from the post-event survey, but initial feedback is very positive. “There was more opportunity

than ever and we are glad we took the decision to press forward with plans to invigorate the event, after the challenges of the last few years due to Covid. “We are committed to re-investing in the show for the future and now look forward to delivering further growth next year, attracting more exhibitors and a wider audience of international buyers for the 2023 event.” The next date in the BFM calendar is the first in its new series of regional industry events, developed for the furniture community to network and share best practice. Taking place on Thursday, May 26th, at Ercol’s manufacturing headquarters in Princes Risborough, the event’s theme is the ‘Workforce of the Future.’ Free-to-attend for BFM members and £25 for non-members, it is being held after working hours, from 6pm to 9pm, and includes a tour of Ercol’s factory. www.bfm.org.uk

KBB Birmingham review Innovation underpins software expert Celebrating thirty years in the business of developing software for the KBB industry, ArtiCAD continues to demonstrate that constant innovation remains at the heart of the company with the launch of seven new products. At the KBB event this year, the company showed its products to an eager audience from what was probably the busiest stand at the show. First amongst these is ArtiCUT, which is now available for the first time in the UK and Republic of Ireland, having already established a large number of customers in South Africa where it has been supplied for several years. The new UK version of this production and cutting system for furniture manufacturers is fully integrated with ArtiCAD’s design software to provide a seamless operation. ArtiCUT is quick and easy to use, producing cutting lists, costing and quotations – and ensuring optimal use of materials. At the recent KBB show in March, ArtiCAD’s ArtiVR virtual reality solution proved to be one of the biggest draws for visitors. In its latest version, ArtiVR now supports an innovative Virtual Online Meetings option. This allows designers to host a meeting with their client within the actual design itself. Designer and client thus meet, for example, in the new kitchen design where the designer can take the customer on a tour of the room, introducing all aspects of it, in as much detail as is required. Designer and client can collaborate and optimise the design, in real-time within the design, as Virtual Meetings is enabled for both camera and microphone. A major factor in the strength and speed of ArtiCAD’s software solutions is that furniture manufacturers are able to choose between more traditional desktop versions or Cloud-based options. The latter approach ensures that all processing and rendering of detailed 3D designs is handled in real-time in the Cloud, without requiring any additional, potentially expensive, processing power, and without the time delays which can so disrupt a client presentation. Rounding up the package of new products in this thirtieth year are new versions of ArtiCAD’s industry-leading CAD software, ArtiCAD-Pro, the company’s 2D and 3D planners and visualisers which drive leads into the sales process, plus

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 20

costing, quoting and management solutions from ArtiCAD’s Smart Systems operation. Theresa Turner, a director of ArtiCAD, is looking forward with optimism. “This year has got off to a great start. The KBB show felt like a real celebration of a return to normality with the opportunity to meet face-to face with all our colleagues in the industry. We saw a huge amount of investment in tech during the lockdowns and this trend seems to be continuing. “Although there have been problems with the supply chain for many suppliers and manufacturers, we see signs that this is easing considerably, which is clearly good news for all in the industry. I think that there will be a real focus on making showrooms a true destination, offering good reasons for customers to visit, and providing a hands-on alternative to choosing and shopping purely online. Being able to offer customers as much choice as possible in how they interact with the industry will be key, I believe, to success this year” 01923 888101 www.articad.com

Improving quality and productivity with cabinet hardware Titus’ furniture hardware solutions have been improving homes around the world for decades. They increase the quality and facilitate assembly of furniture, giving a significant competitive advantage to manufacturers and improving the consumer experience. Their most popular components are the T-type concealed hinge that has a tool-free 3Way snapon mounting and the TeraBlack range that offers an attractive black matte hardware finish to enhance the appeal of cabinets. T-type – the fastest hinge on the market Titus offers a comprehensive range of hinges for every door. The latest innovation, the T-type, enables time-savings at cabinet assembly and assures a lifelong consistent performance on a wide range of doors. The T-type hinges with integrated soft closing assures above-average consistency of performance with no bounce effect and reliable closing at all closing speeds. A unique solution that works on doors of different dimensions and weights, with no rebounce. The 3Way snap-on mounting system makes them exceptionally easy to install, with an intuitive hinge-to-plate mounting in three directions (from the front, the back and the top). Mounting cabinet doors - even on large heavy doors with multiple hinges - has never been this easy. The range has recently been extended to include pie-cut (bi-fold) hinges for corner cabinets, which fit standard drilling patterns and feature convenient ‘double lock’ opening. This means users can either open just one door leaf to get excellent access into the cabinet interior or they can fully open the doors by locking the hinge cup and make the door leaves work as one. T-type is a high-performance hinge that allows for misalignments of drilling patterns up to 0,6 mm. Even in case of misalignment drillings, the hinge performs at its peak capabilities and always ensures smooth and perfect close in every cycle. T-type with ConfidentClose, creates the consumer preferred way of damping, based on results of Titus research made in UK, Germany and Slovenia. It is characterised by fast closing, late start of deceleration action and quiet landing with SoftTouch. The damper is placed in the

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 23

hinge cup with its positioning transversal to the hinge cup, and can be easily adjusted to suit different types of doors. TeraBlack is much more than a colour option With a close eye on emerging trends in the international furniture market, Titus has developed TeraBlack versions of many of its most popular products, including its hugely successful T-type hinges, TL5 ‘full metal jacket’ dowels, shelf supports and its push latches. The new Tera (Titus Enhanced Resistance Application) versions feature an exceptionally attractive non-reflective black finish, which is not only visually appealing but also highly resistant to corrosion, uniform and consistent. The T-type TeraBlack hinge has a smooth, uniform surface with a velvet feel which absorbs light and reduces reflection. Particularly well suited to applications in high-end premium kitchen furniture, Titus TeraBlack products fully meet the requirements of designers and consumers looking for unobtrusive yet attractive cabinet hardware. They have highly uniform surfaces and a velvet feel that complements their quality and enhances consumer appeal. “At Titus, we put a lot of effort into monitoring developments in the furniture sector and recently we’ve seen a growing demand for matt black cabinet hardware,” said Phil Beddoe General Manager at Titus UK. “We weren’t satisfied, however, with the idea of responding by simply offering another colour option – we wanted to offer a market leading solution that combined a visually appealing dark matt finish with genuine and valuable product benefits. And, drawing on our unique expertise in cabinet hardware development and manufacture, that’s exactly what we’ve done with the new TeraBlack versions of our products.” The new TeraBlack products are Titus engineered solutions supported by tightly controlled, repeatable and efficient processes that provide a high level of corrosion resistance and consistency throughout the lifecycle of the product. TeraBlack complements all — standard and trendy — furniture designs in kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, bathrooms and offices. www.uk.titusplus.com

Saviola Saviola were the first company to produce a 100% recycled particleboard and are the leading post-consumption wood processor in the world. Their production philosophy is based on the twin notions of recycling and upcycling, that is to say the salvaging and re-using of post consuming wood to give it a second life, without the need to cut down trees, by way of an environmentally sustainable cycle.

Häfele showcases latest trends, products and research at kbb 2022 Global manufacturer and distributor, Häfele, presented its most innovative and immersive KBB show yet with its largest ever stand for guests to explore the latest products, services and research set to influence the industry. Artfully split across four zones, Häfele’s stand showcased how its vast range of products can be used in combination to help the KBB market optimise functional living spaces – those which maximise the usability, flexibility and value of a space, while balancing it with personal style and design trends, to improve the day-today lives of users. Underpinning what was on display was the company’s brand new research, conducted by Häfele in partnership architect and designer Laura Jane Clark, of the BBC’s ‘Your Home Made Perfect’, which helps determine how kitchen design impacts people’s wellbeing and quality of life.

Super storage As part of Häfele’s research, 32% of respondents said that when it comes to storage, they simply don’t have enough, 17% said their storage is located too high for them to reach or that they find it difficult to reach things in corner cupboards. To demonstrate how the market can help customers overcome this challenge, Häfele showcased its latest wirework and storage innovations to make the best use of space in a kitchen. For example, Häfele’s Matrix Box range presents more usable space within the drawer due to its slim design, while the award-winning Free Space flap fitting is designed to create more storage room within cabinetry, by eliminating the need for current fittings with large cover caps. Additionally, Häfele also cleverly integrated a Concepta folding system to a compact kitchen, to demonstrate how the products can be used to close off smaller spaces when not in use.

Loox lighting When it comes to desired features in the home, useful lighting is highly sought after. According to the research from Häfele, 79% of people with lighting built into cabinetry find it invaluable; 32% of home owners would like to have lighting built into their cabinets, while a further one in seven said they would like a lighting design which can change to create different moods and atmospheres, depending on their activity. Häfele’s Loox Van was packed out with the new Loox 5 lighting range, explaining how both these things can be achieved. Loox 5 includes upgraded internal components and an improved distribution style compared to its predecessor, making it suitable for a wider variety of applications. Guests at the show had the option to receive their own personalised immersive lighting experience in the Loox Van to demonstrate how different lighting products, colours and brightness levels affect our everyday lives, with Häfele’s team of experts on hand to discuss the latest lighting trends and design advice. Accessories and appliances Attendees were presented with new Smeg appliances to explore which are exclusively distributed to the trade by Häfele. Of partucular note to the cabinet makers was the company’s full Metalla hinge range and brand new digital handle visualiser, both of which were on show for the first time ever. Häfele also offered visitors an interactive play area of products, packed out with a mix of worktops, splashbacks, lighting, handles and cabinet doors which guests were able to play with and configure into a variety of different styles and trends to suit any kitchen design. Alusplash Häfele’s research also showed that almost a third (32.35%) of respondents wished for a more colourful kitchen – the latest tones from the bestselling AluSplash collection, Elements, were on show on Häfele’s stand to provide options in this regard. The aluminium-based splashbacks range has been expanded with eight new colours plus a marble finish. The Elements collection features a hand-picked selection of earth, air, fire and water inspired shades available in a luxurious, premium matt design.

Häfele launches new Metalla 310 hinge Häfele is renowned for supplying a broad range of hinges to the UK furniture market, helping manufacturers produce high quality designs that are built to last. But against ever changing market conditions and evolving customer needs, spring 2022 will see the fittings manufacturer and distributor launch a new range of its own-brand hinges that make it easy for producers to find what they need. Metalla is a collection of hinges of varying functions and price points, all created with quality and long-term performance in mind, based on three years of global research and development within Häfele. The Metalla 310 hinge is the first to launch to the UK market, and has been specially designed to give furniture manufacturers a high quality choice, whatever the application. The 310 offers a large assortment mid-range hinge suitable for wide angle openings, post hinge, and 30 or 45° opening. .It’s available in soft-close or a non-soft close variant and is ideal

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 28

for standard installations such as common 110˚ angle openings. In the development of Metalla, Häfele UK came together with its counterparts in all other global regions to explore the varying needs, differences and commonalities of customers when working in different territories. While in the UK residential and commercial hinges need to meet BS 6222-2:2009+A1:2017 Level G and Level H respectively, Häfele has ensured its Metalla 310 hinge – regardless of application – has also been tested for at least 40,000 cycles and 48 hours against corrosion resistance in accordance with EN 15570 level 2 / LGA quality certification. Justin Crofts, Category Manager for Furniture Construction at Häfele, said: “We’ve always been known for the quality of hinges we supply. But on a global scale, we saw an opportunity to improve what we offer to furniture makers and part of that was creating a range of Häfele branded hinges that you can’t get elsewhere. “We wanted to put all our knowledge and

experience of distributing hinges into our own-brand so three years ago we began an international project to overhaul the range, with the aim of enhancing what’s available, but also streamlining the portfolio so it’s easier for furniture producers to choose what’s right for them and the project. “A lot of scrutiny goes into our production and testing processes to make sure what we sell meets, or exceeds, the standards our customers expect. With hinges, for example, there’s on-site testing where they’re made, testing by our headquarters in Germany and we have then tested the Metalla 310 to FIRA standards in the UK too. We also provide a 25 year guarantee, giving furniture makers that extra peace of mind. “Ultimately, in using the Metalla 310, furniture manufacturers and installers can be confident they’re getting complete reliability, ease of use and long-term quality.” For updates on the launch of the Metalla range, subscribe to Häfele UK’s newsletter at hafele. co.uk/metalla

REHAU in full bloom at KBB Located on an impressive statement stand at KBB, Rehau continues to flourish with its outstanding product philosophy, sustainability integrity, creative market vision and a renewed vigour to further develop a its relationship with the UK furniture manufacturing market. In terms of products, this year marks 50 years since the launch of its popular RAUKANTEX polymer edgebanding range, and REHAU unveiled two new additions with sustainability at their heart, at KBB. RAUKANTEX eco and RAUKANTEX evo form part of REHAU’s holistic sustainability strategy and impressively demonstrate how sustainability can be applied to furniture edgebands. Composed of 50% post-industrial recycled material, RAUKANTEX eco offers a green solution, while maintaining high quality levels. The product is available as the RAUKANTEX

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 31

pure primer edgeband or RAUKANTEX pro invisible joint edgeband and is a straightforward replacement for conventional edgebands, as no change in machine parameters is needed. The RAUKANTEX evo edgeband is based on renewable raw materials. Using this edgeband instead of a conventional polypropylene (PP) one ensures the use of non-fossil primary raw materials rather than crude oil. This is known as renewable feedstock as it is waste production from other industries. Furthermore, the edgeband can be processed in the same way as a conventional PP option and has the same quality characteristics of any alternative – also matching the surface of the well-known RAUKANTEX product lines just as flawlessly. Both products are available in a wide range of colour and decorative design matches, as well as precise specifications and tolerances.

Jonathan Heginbottom, national sales manager OEM for REHAU Furniture Solutions, comments: “We’re proud to be celebrating the 50th birthday of the RAUKANTEX brand this year, with the impressive milestone demonstrative of the ongoing quality and design of the range. “When you look back at its history, you can see how the range has been continuously adapted to stay at the forefront of edgebanding design. With sustainability and the protection of natural resources being among some of the most important issues we currently face, it was important that we could play our part in reducing our impact on the environment, as well as future proofing edgebanding for years to come.” As part of REHAU’s sustainability strategy, it ensures recycling of production and processing waste, as well as the use of 100% carbon-neutral >> electricity for production.

Elsewhere on the stand, REHAU made a strong impression with its tambour doors. These offer a space-efficient storage option and while these are typically associated with 80s office furniture, they are being reintroduced in stylish ways throughout the KBB environment as well as elsewhere in the domestic and contract market applications – a truly versatile product. Tambour doors also have various safety benefits given the lock systems available and the lack of doors left open obstructing passageways. REHAU also used its confident and cohesive KBB platform to launch two new colours – Laguna and Atlantico – to its RAUVISIO crystal glass laminate surface collection. Inspired by the magic of Iceland, Laguna and Atlantico are elements of a subdued colour palette that will accentuate furniture and ornaments in the Scandinavian style. “KBB proved a great opportunity for us to show the latest editions to the Passion for Colour range, following its initial success in 2020,” comments Scott Williams, national sales manager. “We’ve been closely monitoring customer interests as they develop and wanted to expand the collection further. “We noticed the earlier Hygge lifestyle trend had evolved into Lagom, with people wanting a mixture of minimalist furniture without compromising on homely effects. Thus, our aim with Laguna and Atlantico was to give people the chance to decorate their homes with colours that would act as an accent, rather than overshadowing, their personal belongings. “For instance, Atlantico can be used with other shades of blue in a holistic approach. While an air of sophistication comes when using it in juxtaposition with the colour gold, or alongside concrete for a minimalist, industrial kitchen look. We anticipate Atlantico being popular with homeowners, following Pantone’s announcement that blue is the colour of the year. “Our other new launch, Laguna, is a subtle greyish-blue that encapsulates the Icelandic

>>

geography when in situ against the earthy tones of greenish-grey and aged wood.’” Last year, REHAU’s Designing Different research campaign discovered that 60% of homeowners prefer calm and neutral tones with the addition of vibrant accessories to introduce character into their living spaces. “In search of more tranquil colour inspiration, we looked to the enchanting Icelandic landscape. For Laguna, we were drawn to the bodies of water – each lake and lagoon unique in shape, colour and appeal – nestled within the island’s rugged terrain. While with Atlantico we channelled the Atlantic Ocean’s connectedness. The vast Ocean encompasses Iceland, connecting the island to the rest of the world through its seas, covering a fifth of the earth’s surface,” Scott concludes.

Available in either high-gloss or matt, the RAUVISIO crystal range offers a versatile alternative to real glass without compensating on style or quality. The sheets are 50% lighter and ten times more break-resistant than glass. Able to be cut to size with standard woodworking tools, RAUVISIO can easily be milled or inlaid, resulting in less waste or costly breakages. Offering complete design freedom, there are multiple applications across the home, with thicker sheets used as front panels and utilised in recesses and wall panels. Martin – a family success story spanning a century Discover the fascinating history of Martin – a prominent and highly-respected brand whose legacy spans the golden ‘20s, WWII and the ever-shifting march of technological innovation over the course of the 20th century.

Otto Martin

This year, Martin celebrates a monumental milestone. For 100 years the company has represented the very best of premium woodworking machinery, honouring the legacy begun by company founder, Otto Martin Sr, in 1922. What began as a collection of basic, yet solid machines, has grown exponentially over the following ten decades to set a benchmark for quality and functionality in the industry... Origins The economic upswing of the golden ‘20’s provides the backdrop for Martin’s origins. In the wake of this boom, and a period of remarkable prosperity in German culture, art and science, machine builder Otto Martin and his stepbrother, the carpenter Heinrich Drexel, registered their business at the mayor’s office in Benningen on February 4th 1922. Together, they had set up a workshop in a barn on their parent’s property in Benningen. The first woodworking machine was built with a wooden worktable and base, with iron and cast iron only gradually emerging for these parts. The innovative concept of building the machines on a concrete base was said to have “come to the brothers in a dream”. From that day forward, the machines were given a concrete base, laying the foundations for the composite stand used today. Towards the end of the ‘20s the first slurry pumps were manufactured, multiplying to the hundreds over the ensuing decades.

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 36

Consolidation The 1930s was a period of consolidation for the company. In 1930, Otto Martin became sole proprietor and the company was given its present name – Otto Martin Maschinenbau. His bride, Maria Guggemos, was now keeping the books, a role formerly occupied by his brother. Following his marriage to Maria, Otto built his own workshop at his father-in-law’s house, moving the business in Autumn 1930. As the mid-1930s saw increased mechanisation in agriculture, the opportunity arose to develop a MARTIN tractor with 20hp power. This MARTIN tractor, named F22, was produced from 1936 onwards and became increasingly popular as a particularly powerful machine in its time. In 1938, pressure from the Berlin government led to an agreement with the company, Xaver Fendt & Co., in Marktoberdorf on the joint construction of the standard type F22. The first tractors of this type, based on MARTIN designs, were delivered in 1939. 1939 saw another key step as, after many years of purchasing castings from suppliers, the company was able to secure a foundry of

its own. Though not necessarily the perfect article, this marked a crucial first step toward independence. As the decade drew to a close, the work force numbered 15 employees, with a workshop area that had more than tripled in size. Shadow of wartime Just as Martin had really started to build momentum, the Second World War – as for so many – had a staggering impact on the company and its employees. Although tractor production flourished, restrictions cast by the war increasingly impacted upon the supply of materials. Perhaps the most devastating impact, however, were the call-ups, which resulted in a dwindling workforce. It was only the take-over of so-called subsupplies from armament companies that provided some protection from draft calls for the predominantly young workforce. The increasing difficulties led to the cessation of tractor production in 1942, and in the following year, the workforce was reduced to just 90 employees.

As the war rumbled on, the production of agricultural pumps – which were manufactured bypassing the controllers of the armament command – was the only real means of survival for the company. However, April 1945 saw the majority of the employees dismissed, and the company came to a standstill. June 1945 saw a spurt of reemployment and, by the end of 1946, 197 pumps had been delivered. Driven by his affection for tractor production, Otto Martin decided to take to the drawing board again and designed the S11 tractor, an 11 hp farm tractor. A slump in agricultural sales in 1949 dealt another blow to the company, leading Otto to contemplate his earlier success in the construction of woodworking machinery. As cities destroyed by the war began a lengthy process of repair, the construction industry boomed, and a combined spindle moulder was developed in record time ...

“As cities destroyed by the war began a lengthy process of repair, the construction industry boomed, and a combined spindle moulder was developed in record time” A new course The 1950s was a crucial moment in the company’s history, for it saw the company’s focus set decidedly, and enduringly, upon the manufacture of woodworking machines. It was Martin’s participation in national exhibitions that truly laid the company’s foundations for success. First in Frankfurt and Munich, then from 1951 in Hanover, these trade fairs played a vital role in establishing the Martin name in new professional circles, and growing its foreign customer base. Relationships with its core trading partners, some which still exist today, were also integral. Austrian trading house, Schachermayer, is the company’s oldest trading partner, dating back to this time, alongside Papenbroock in HamburgRellingen and Dr. Keller in Freiburg. The remainder of the decade saw many positive milestones for the company as the workforce grew to over 130 employees; the production halls were constantly enlarged and expanded; an exporter in Hamburg began selling its machines in the US and the T75 sliding table saw was introduced – a milestone machine for Martin and for its customers, and which remained a staple in its portfolio for a full 20 years.

Passing on the legacy As new export countries opened up in the 1960s, the popularity of the Martin brand grew year on year. The company’s product range now included table saws, sliding table saws, combined machines as well as surface and thickness planers. The idea of replacing the steel transport rollers on thickness planers, which were common at that time, with the rubber transport rollers that are predominantly used today, also dates back to this time. This caused quite a stir, particularly amongst Martin’s competitors who, because of its registered design – could not easily reproduce the solution. In 1963, Martin’s production exceeded the 1,000 mark for the first time while, in 1966, the legendary T23 was introduced for the first time as a tilting arbor spindle moulder. It is fair to say that this spindle moulder, which was very popular with carpenters, made a significant contribution to Martin’s reputation and status. On April 14th, 1964, Otto Martin Sr sadly passed away and his sons Otto Martin junior and Max Martin joined the company. Since this point, the company has been titled – Otto Martin Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG. >>

Technological advancement The 1970s saw something of a sea change in the technology available to Martin. The automatic typewriter was introduced, while its sliding table saws were equipped with scoring aggregates that could be adjusted while the machine was running, which was unique in the market. In 1972, the production of horizontal panel saws and pressure beam saws was started. The T80, as the machine was called, could already tilt the saw blade to 45°. In the second half of the 1970s, the T83 pressure beam saw was introduced. In this machine, a steel-concrete composite column was used again for the first time, borrowing from the company’s own development from 1924. Also in the second half of the decade, the first machines were equipped with an automatic DC brake. In 1979, production of the T75 was discontinued. The machine was produced with great success for exactly 20 years, and many a joiner’s workshop still has one of these machines. The successor to the T75, the T70, was the first standard machine with a composite column.

Martin’s modern headquarters in Ottobeuren, Germany

Progress At the beginning of the 1980s, the first “real” computer, a Nixdorf, was purchased. It initially had three screens and a printer. The purchase price was, from today’s point of view, an astronomical 70,000 DM, which corresponds to €35,800. The T71, which had replaced the T70, was “the first machine in the world that could be equipped with a so-called parallel cutting device”, the company is proud to claim. With the help of

>>

“A key product milestone came in the form of the T60 PreXision, “the world’s first sliding table saw” whose saw blade can tilt up to 46° on both sides”

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 38

this special equipment it was easily possible to cut panel formats lying on the left side of the saw blade. With this equipment, the format saw could almost be regarded as an intermediate between a format saw and a panel saw. A licence agreement was signed with Swiss company, Samvaz, in 1985, which secured Martin exclusive distribution of the patented TERSA System planing tools and knives in Germany. The licence agreement also meant that it supplied TERSA planing shafts to competitors if they wanted to offer a machine with this technology. Big developments over the pond The 1990s see a four-sided planer with the designation T90 introduced, which is initially only intended for four-sided, smooth planing. The machine is quick and easy to use and gains a large following, even receiving an award for “humane workplace design”. As production progresses, the T90 is equipped with up to three additional shafts, which then allow profiling. Another key development is the widescale introduction of electronics into Martin’s machines. The adjusting axes of the machines are equipped with electronic displays or even controls. while electronic controls for tool speed or feed are now also available at extra cost. In the mid-90s, the T25 CNC is introduced. With this machine and its control system, Martin offers “the first machine with what was then a very powerful electronic control system for up to five axes”, it claims with pride. As well as expansion in its product offering, Martin also has access to the southern European markets following its first participation in the Xylexpo exhibition in Milan, in addition to establishing its subsidiary, Martin Woodworking Machines, in Charlotte, USA. This enables the company to serve the increasingly important US market directly for the first time. Relatively soon, its colleagues in the USA are able to land one of the largest single orders in the company’s history. Almost 30 machines are sold to a manufacturer of kitchen fronts.

25/03/2022 16:56

39

The 2000s This decade marks the consolidation of France as one of Martin’s most important export markets – remaining its number one market even today. A key product milestone came in the form of the T60 PreXision, “the world’s first sliding table saw” whose saw blade can tilt up to 46° on both sides. In 2006 and 2007, Martin achieved record order intakes of up to 1,700 machines p.a., and succeeded its market share significantly in many markets. In 2010, Martin introduced the T75 PreX. This machine was particularly innovative due to its 92° tilting angle and 205mm cutting height. With the introduction of proAlpha in 2011, Martin now works with a so-called ERP system – an enterprise resource planning system – across all its operations. With proAlpha, every process – from quotation to material requirements and production planning to invoicing – is mapped with one software. Moving forward to 2015, Martin enters a completely new market segment with the introduction of the Q-FIN, a special sanding machines for the wood-working industry. Thanks to sophisticated technical solutions, continuous window parts are first processed on the top and bottom side, and now also on the glass neck with the quality finishing process. The secret of the machine is the defined cross sanding of the surfaces, which leads to an almost complete elimination of intermediate sanding. Numerous customers in the window manufacturing industry at home and abroad are now enthusiastic users of this machine, which won gold in the German Innovation Award in 2018. In response to ever-increasing direct demand from its customers, Martin decided to establish its sales and service branch in Hanover in 2017. Covid 19 hits After the widespread industry slump triggered by the lockdowns of March-May 2020, Martin was able to recover in the ensuing months, containing its losses over the course of the year. Since mid-2021, the company has experienced an “excellent order intake”. Initially believed to be a catch-up effect from the lockdown months, this momentum has continued, but with an undesirable wave of price increases from its suppliers. Though physical celebrations have been dampened somewhat by the pandemic, Martin will nevertheless see numerous changes and additions to its product range in its anniversary year. The most obvious will be the change of the machines to the new colour, papyrus white. 25 years ago, during its 75th anniversary, the colour water-blue was introduced, first as a special

Commemorating its 100th anniversary, the company and its products have a new look, befitting today’s spacious, bright workshops. For more than two years, Martin has been developing a sliding table saw under the name “Neuform”, which will replace the models T65, T70 and T75. This machine will be marketed as T77. With numerous special features, for example an infinitely variable speed control already in the standard version, and the completely new operating concept, ConnectControl, this machine will set new standards. The T60A and T60C models will be replaced by a machine based on them, the T66. The ConnectControl operating concept will also set new standards on the T66, as on the further developed T14 and T29 spindle moulders. An old acquaintance will come back on board as the T32, only this time from Ottobeuren manufacture. This combined thicknessing and surface planer has been thoroughly developed

on the basis of the TP300. Last but not least, the company’s Q-FIN has also recently undergone a decisive further development with the newly developed chamfering unit and the motor-adjustable side brushes. Looking to the future The past century has proven quite a journey for Martin, filled with abundant success, and a number of bitter failures and testing times. Martin is proud of its heritage, and the challenges that have made it the illustrious brand it is today: “We can say that fate has been kind to us for the most part and that we have mastered these 100 years very successfully with Swabian creativity, a dashed measure of luck and the unconditional desire to always be better tomorrow than we were yesterday. We can look to the future with confidence.” sales@martin.info www.martin.info

INSIGHT 41

Whilst working on yacht projects offers endless possibilities, it comes with a host of challenges. Silverlining Furniture’s head of design, Jim Birch, shares his top tips for designing furniture fit for the world’s most prestigious yachts, such as Artefact, Bravo Eugenia, Lady S, Kaos and Moonsand 3. Soft corners Despite the yachts we work on being spacious and the movement when on the water gentle, we still must consider sharp corners on our furniture. Our proposals do normally have soft radiuses so there isn’t the risk of bumping into a hard corner when walking on board. It can be tricky but always consider this from the start so that the final shape of the piece isn’t an afterthought or a last-minute addition. Sea catches These are integrated into most storage furniture so that doors or drawers don’t jump open when the vessel is on the move. Again, design these into the piece from the outset, so that they are considered and either disappear within the body of the piece or are subtly detailed.

Proportions Remember ceiling heights are normally low on yachts - it affects how you will proportion the furniture. Lighting Consider the lighting at day and night – it varies a lot. There is always a huge amount of natural ambient and sometimes direct sunlight in the day and then very controlled atmospheric artificial light settings at night. The finishes, colours, reflectivity of a surface or textures will behave quite differently in the different light levels so try and foresee this.

Storage Storage is always a big factor. Our furniture has to look beautiful, whilst having as much storage within it as possible. We will purposefully engineer pieces to have slim builds for the carcase and doors to maximise internal storage. We like to know the storage requirements in detail before we start to design our pieces – working closely with the captain or chief stewardess is often the best way to get this information. Yacht furniture is often adaptable to different requirements e.g., a dining table might need to extend in length to accommodate more diners, so the additional components needed for this have to be stored in the table base.

solutions can take a long time to develop and engineer so if the conversations are happening early in the design process it allows the correct time to come up with a good solution to often a challenging request.

Technology Integration of power and electrics and technology is thoroughly considered. Make sure you get a clear brief from the start about integrating tech as it will force your hand in terms of the design and proportions. Bespoke

Be adventurous Yacht projects are a great opportunity to propose something unique and creative. Be inspired by the wider world, art world and other design disciplines. www.silverliningfurniture.com

Collaborate Be considerate to all the other specialists working on the project. Building and fitting out a yacht is a huge team effort, and clear communication and working well with all parties is crucial. It can be a huge logistical challenge so be prepared for bumps in the road and respond to them positively and respectfully to your colleagues on board. They will thank you for it and return the favour.

Essentially superior products created with Quasar veneers Based in Castledawson, Northern Ireland, Essential Design Group (EDG) is a forward-thinking, dynamic supplier to the construction industry in the UK and Ireland. Established in April 2001 by Oliver and Mandy Higgins, the group comprises three distinct but integrated divisions, Essential Fire Doors, Essential Glass and Essential Joinery. Essential Fire Doors is a leading distributor of fully finished fire doors in the UK and Ireland, working for a prestigious list of clients in the construction, fit-out, public, corporate and retail markets. Essential Glass is one of the leading installers of aluminium framing to the fit-out, construction and residential industry socialising in glazed shop front facades, bi-fold/patio doors, balustrades and balconies and other glazed solutions. Essential Joinery manufactures bespoke joinery solutions for a wide range of clients and applications, from hospitality to corporate and retail applications. Being a highly important performance element, fire doors and door sets have very strict certification standards and EDG is 100% compliant in this regard. “As members of the BWF Fire Door Alliance Scheme, we have committed ourselves to a rigorous certification programme requiring a considerable investment in time and money,” explains Rebecca Higgins, Essential Design Group marketing manager. “This commitment to fire door/fire door set performance and quality will ensure these life saving products achieve their aim of protecting lives and property. “Our design and manufacturing process is assessed for an ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, which is also a requirement of the BWF Fire Door Alliance scheme. This requirement helps to ensure that standards are consistently maintained for every fire door or fire door set manufactured, should it be a 30-, 60- or 120-minute fire rating. “The BWF-CERTIFIRE label and new Fire Door Alliance Label provides traceability through the supply chain, ensuring we, Essential Design Group, can be contacted if further information on the fire door is required.

In terms of materials used in the construction of the fire doors and door sets, there is a plethora of suppliers a business could turn to, in EDG’s case, an experienced and conveniently located supplier is but a few miles from EDG’s production site. “When looking for suppliers of raw materials we need bespoke sizes and high quality products supplied on time every time, which we have found with local veneer and panel supplier, Quasar,” says Rebecca. “We have a fantastic relationship with Quasar and orders are received without question. We also need new products coming to the forefront to keep us ahead of our opposition and Quasar readily fulfils this requirement. “We use Quasar’s veneers for door core finishes. Different species are used, oak for instance, in both grain directions, depending on client specification. Paper backing is also an option and their quality is always superior. “Quasar is a very easy company to work with,” says Rebecca, “we can place orders via phone and email to any member of their very capable team. Every order is processed professionally and on time with a friendly service. Quasar has a showroom which is ideal for us to meet clients to view multiple products – and Quasar’s managing director Alan Dickson is always available for any technical advice. Concluding Rebecca says: “We would highly recommend Quasar as a high-end supplier of veneers.” 02879 659694 www.wearequasar.com

“What we want, when we want it, how we want it” Stoneywell Kitchens, a kitchen retailer based in Staffordshire, was the first company in the UK to invest in Blum’s Minipress top. With over 20 years of trading, Paul Durrant runs Stoneywell kitchens, but he also benefits from the help of his daughter, Hollie, and family dog, Benson. In recent years, Stoneywell has made the change to start manufacturing parts of the furniture itself. The company began with the recent acquisitions of an edgebander and a vertical power saw, however there was still one element required to have the level of control it wanted for Stoneywell Kitchens – the horizontal and vertical drilling points for fittings. Blum’s Minipress top fit the bill. The third generation of the Minipress series of machines, Minipress top provides its user with a solution for drilling and insertion requirements. Coupled with Easystick, the machine will dramatically increase the rate at which the board for a cabinet can be prepared or have Blum components installed. Furthermore, it is all contained in one machine, useful if space is a premium. Minipress top completed the trio of machines that Stoneywell Kitchens needed for its next step as a business. However, buying a Minipress top isn’t as simple as a Universal drilling template or an Ecodrill – it is a complicated machine. Paul’s journey started with a complimentary tour around the Blum Experience Centre with his daughter so that they could understand the Blum ethos, which Paul felt matched with the approach he wanted for Stoneywell. The tour culminated with a demonstration of a Minipress top. To be able to take customers into his showroom and demonstrate to them the manufacturing process was the level of quality he wanted for his customers. The lifetime guarantee Q card from Blum means Stoneywell’s customers can have full confidence in their new kitchen. “I just want to give clients a really good product

in every respect, from the edgebanding to the fittings, and the technical support I get from Blum is second to none,” says Paul. The Blum technical team swung into action to support Stoneywell Kitchens through the next steps. They helped Paul through the requirements with the machine, ensuring he had all the accessories necessary for his purposes, including the extended five-metre ruler and range of drilling heads. Once the machine was delivered, the last piece of the puzzle was for the Blum Technical Team to complete the machine commissioning service for Stoneywell. As the latest technical service from Blum, the purpose is to ensure that all new owners of a Blum machine have all the training they need to be able to confidently use their machine from day one. Blum machine specialists, Andy and Nathan, paid Paul a visit. As a tailored service, no two commissionings are the same, but the Blum experts were able to complete the installation, identify where Stoneywell needed help with the machine, and make any adjustments they felt would benefit the user. Finally, they needed to ensure all the software for both the Minipress top and Easystick was up to date. After a few test runs with members of the team, Blum’s experts confirmed that the Minipress top was ready to go, down to knowing the boss depth of 13mm was set and that the horizontal drilling height was in the middle at 9mm. Hollie has worked with Blum’s Cabinet Configurator, so the team are confident they can build up their range of templates on Blum’s

supporting software to help simplify their manufacturing capabilities down the road. The ease of transferring designs from Cabinet Configurator to creating them with the machine was a big draw for the family. After running through any last questions Paul and the team had about the machine, they were ready to begin the real learning with hands-on experience, safe in the knowledge that Andy and Nathan are only a call away if needed. There is a standard follow up service in a year, to see how Paul and the machine are getting on with one another, meaning Stoneywell Kitchens is confident that this is a long-term relationship, and its new manufacturing capability will remain on track. For more information on what the Minipress top can do for your business, or if you already own one and would like the support of the Blum Technical team, call 0800 230 0898 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 12pm Saturday. 01908 285700 www.blum.com

Joinery company makes big savings on heating and waste disposal A company that offers bespoke joinery and carpentry in Norfolk has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs. Catton Windows in Norwich has been designing, manufacturing and installing bespoke handcrafted hardwood doors, windows, conservatories, orangeries, garden rooms and extensions since 1987. The business originally started with one small factory unit, but, as it grew, more adjoining buildings were acquired, and the company now operates from four adjacent factory buildings. Having heard about the benefits of wood waste heaters and having researched some of the environmental grants available, Director of Catton Windows, Matt Woodford, started making enquiries with reputable wood waste burner suppliers to find out more, and contacted Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology for a survey and a quote. Matt was impressed with the range of heaters manufactured by Wood Waste Technology at its headquarters in Staffordshire. Catton Windows purchased a WT15, which was installed at Catton’s 8000ft2 premises by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers last summer. The heater was installed in one of the factories, but the engineers planned the installation to allow the heat generated to be piped through to all the other buildings too. “The wood waste burner provides muchneeded heating for the factory buildings in winter, but also free disposal of the large amount of waste wood and sawdust generated as part of the manufacturing process,” says Matt. “We previously had to rely on oil-based heaters to warm the factory, which were proving to be really expensive to run in the cold winter months. We’ve calculated that the investment will save us around £6000 a year on heating and waste disposal, which is a fantastic reduction in our operational costs!” Having previously invested in a briquetting machine, Catton Windows also has the ability to recycle some of its wood waste and sawdust

into briquettes, which the company stores in a container over the summer to use in the winter, giving the business the option to burn or sell them, depending on requirements. Matt says: “The team at Wood Waste Technology has been fantastic – so helpful and knowledgeable. We’re delighted with our investment – it makes disposing of wood waste so easy whilst conveniently heating the factory for free! Our only regret is that we didn’t invest in one sooner! We’d recommend any business that generates waste wood or sawdust speak to Wood Waste Technology – it just makes sense!” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft adds: “We’re always happy to help businesses find out more about wood waste heaters, to

save them money on waste disposal on heating, but also to help a business become more environmentally friendly by recycling waste rather than sending it to landfill”. Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. machines utilising seven Homag software platforms. Recent growth prompted Omega to invest in an additional Homag Centateq P110 CNC processing centre in November 2021, and a Homag Sawteq B-400 panel dividing saw in March 2022. This has allowed for more efficient cutting of melamine-faced chipboard (MFC) for both doors and carcasses, increasing the company’s production capacity still further. A long-standing and vital partnership Commenting on Omega’s relationship with Homag, Alastair England, purchasing and operations director at Omega, stated: “Homag is a vital partner of Omega, and its solutions are fully integrated into the business. Over 95% of the machines in our factory are made by Homag. “We believe that this strong partnership helps us to achieve our goals, as it ensures that we have the best possible plant list to meet our quality and future growth plans. This is all backed up with Homag’s top-class customer support package.” Expanding on the selection process for the new machines, Alistair went on to say: “When selecting a supplier of new equipment, good value for money, product reliability and customer service are our key drivers. “Our projects engineer, Paul Robinson, is involved in the selection of our shop-floor

machinery. He has worked for Omega since 2016 and, at his previous companies, has gained vast experience of operating many other woodworking machinery brands. “Over the years, Paul has developed a wealth of product expertise. Since joining Omega, he has visited the Homag UK Open House and German manufacturing facilities many times to further expand his knowledge. Many of our machine operatives have also attended Homag’s training courses in Germany. The training has been particularly useful if the new machines they are operating have more advanced manufacturing capabilities.” Collaborative and trusted solutions Commenting on the purchasing process, Paul said: “When investigating options for new wood processing machinery it often involves in-depth discussions with the Homag sales representatives. This helps us to select the best solution for our exact production requirements. “Homag never attempts to sell us features that would be superfluous for our production needs. This makes the buying process easier as we have complete trust in the sincerity and integrity of all the team at Homag.” For a demonstration or more information on Homag’s machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

There is an individual edging solution available for each processing technology. The service includes fast delivery, competent advice and continuous development of products. In addition to the polyolefin-based functional layer quality that has been used for years, an even higher quality solution based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has been available for some time. Furniture makers who want to process boards with hot air, laser or near infrared (NIR) technology can obtain the right edgings from Ostermann. All three solutions – TPU Airtec, TPU Laser and TPU Infratec – are available for the entire range of materials, colours, and decors. During production, the stock items are provided with a functional layer specially designed for the respective technology. They can be coated in a great number of standard colours, such as white, natural, beige, brown,

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 54

grey and black, as well as in other new colours. This means that all edgings, colours and decors are available for processing with zero bondline technologies within a very short time. Find all information on the products by typing in the search item “TPU” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu Advantages of TPU zero bondline edgings TPU is the abbreviation for thermoplastic polyurethane. The material is highly resistant and is characterised by a very high shear strength. TPU zero bondline edgings provide an industry-comparable solution for edgebanding. The functional layer of the TPU edgings consists of 100% plastic, which leads to a hard, yet permanently elastic joint with a strong bond. The functional layer cures quickly, which prevents smearing at the units during postprocessing, even at high feed speeds. The bondline does not shrink when drying out. Due to the hardness of the functional layer, the joint will not deteriorate over the longer term. This results in excellent continuous use properties of the finished workpieces.

Numerous in-house tests have shown the high water resistance of TPU zero bondline edgings, in addition to a heat resistance of up to 150° C. Fast delivery of small quantities TPU Airtec, TPU Laser and TPU Infratec edgings from Ostermann are available from just one roll. For ABS edgings with 1mm thickness this means a minimum purchase of only 225m. For ABS edgings with a thickness of 2mm, the minimum order is only 150m. The edgings are supplied in any width from 16 to 60mm and ready for dispatch in four working days. Competent partner for the trade More than 10 years of experience, an in-house machine park with the various edgebanding machines and zero bondline technologies, as well as permanent tests to guarantee the high quality of the products. Thanks to the close exchange between Ostermann’s own application engineers and the processing customers, the zero bondline edgings are also subject to continuous further development. www.ostermann.eu

Website evolution for a simpler service Cadre Components, a popular edge banding company, has recently launched a revamp of its website. The ongoing evolution of the industry and the customer craving for sleek simplicity prompted the upgrade. Customers visiting the new website will find a userfriendly, modern design that’s easily navigable and places UX at the forefront. Cadre’s website has been a staple for many in the industry for years, a one-stop shop for all edge banding needs. However, with its new interface, customers can now find what they need even more efficiently, with a broad range of edge banding and accessories, including colour matches and glue waxes, at their fingertips. The goal in creating the new website was to reach more clients and ensure the delivery of a swiffer service that minimises customer effort and maximises client satisfaction. The move isn’t surprising, coming from a company that has always been committed to providing exceptional customer service. New products, improved services We live in an ever-complex world. As a result, consumers are increasingly hungry for brands that allow them swift access to whatever they want with a few clicks of the mouse (or swipe of the finger if they’re on mobile devices). Cadre’s newly revamped website also features a more extensive product range which is rapidly growing, with new products added each week. In addition, the site also showcases the company’s innovative colour matching service, which allows them to deliver the perfect match for customer’s needs every time.

If it doesn’t already exist within their catalogue, Cadre can create it for you. The silver lining in the wake of the pandemic In the wake of the COVID crisis, it’s heartening to see an edge banding provider look at how they can improve the customer experience. Low workforce availability and rising labour costs have driven up prices; finding room for innovation and evolution in the services provided is an excellent way to offset the pandemic’s negative impact.

A fine resource for the edge banding industry Overall, the new Cadre Components website is an excellent resource for companies looking for high-quality edge banding products. Customers can easily find what they need and place orders with just a few clicks. In addition, the website features a blog with helpful tips and tricks for using edge banding products. So, if you require edge banding products, check out the new website 01942 716600 www.cadre-components.co.uk

Edging Supplies – an experienced and committed supplier to the UK furniture market Discover more about the ethos and offering of this popular UK supplier of edging materials and accessories. Founded by Kal Sandhu and Derrick Gray in July 2018, Edging Supplies specialises in the supply of edgebanding and ancillary products to the furniture manufacturing industry. With more than 25 years’ experience under their belt, the Worcestershire-based team has amassed a solid customer base and a stellar reputation in the market. Having a good supplier base has been crucial to Edging Supplies’ growth. Its chief supply partner and supporter since conception is TECE, a Turkey-based business established in 1987, and now a major producer and supplier of edgebanding worldwide. It is suppliers like TECE, and many others, that allow Edging Supplies to provide high quality service and support to its customer base. “Our ethos of quality, service and reliability is closely aligned with our suppliers in this ever-demanding world,” says Kal. “Edging Supplies has a comprehensive range of edgebandings and ancillary products which we stock at our warehouse in Malvern. There

are over 400 product lines, comprising two million+ metres of edgebanding, all available on a next-day delivery. “The pallet carrier and parcel carrier the company uses delivers the service our customers need to keep their production running smoothly – this in turn gives the end-customer the product they want in the timeframe agreed.” Customers can make their orders by phone, email WhatsApp messaging, and via the website as an enquiry. Deliveries can be arranged on a timed delivery or the standard next-day service. For special colours, Edging Supplies has the ability to match from an extensive selection held in its office, or it can arrange a colour match directly from TECE. This process can be completed within two weeks, with production and delivery about four weeks from order. The company holds an impressive range of products, from ABS, PVC, melamine and veneer edgebandings, to ancillary products such as self-adhesive cover caps, repair waxes, edgebander

adhesives and panel cleaners. “We are committed to working closely with our customers, so as to customise their individual needs regarding the range of products and sizes,” says Derrick, “and specific stockholding to ensure reliable continuity of supply – even as customer usage fluctuates due to seasonal variations or trend changes in the market in general. “It is our belief that our business must be proactive to meet both the customers’ needs, and what is happening in the market as a whole – staying one step ahead is crucial to the future of the business.

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 62

“Moving forward, we have plans to expand our warehousing capacity on our existing site in line with our projected growth over the next three years,” concludes Kal, “and this will help us to increase both our stock range and quantities held in Malvern for express availability to our customers.”

IMA Schelling UK looks ahead to 2022 and beyond Historically IMA (Germany) and Schelling (Austria) have always been close players in the industry and have worked under a network umbrella for many years until, some six years ago, Schelling Anlagenbau of Austria bought IMA in Germany to form the IMA Schelling Group. Since that time, ISG – as it is commonly known – has been working on a global basis to consolidate the separate IMA and Schelling

companies into one company, demonstrating a united front to customers as one group. Since the merger earlier last year into IMA Schelling UK Ltd, the company has expanded its range of Schelling cut-to-size saws and complementary equipment, available from its head office in Wetherby, as well as its established collection of throughfeed singleand double-sided IMA Combima edgebanding

machines running at up to 120 metres per minute feed speed. IMA Schelling UK is the manufacturer of the world-famous IMA BIMA range of CNC machining centres, both with and without edgebanding and finishing facilities. It is also the designer and manufacturer of the IMAGIC range of throughfeed point to point drilling and dowel insertion machines. >>

J & C O’Meara – the story so far The formation of J & C O’Meara Ltd back in 1990 was a natural decision by father and son team, Joseph and Carl, to go independent having already notched up a combined 30 years’ experience as service and installation engineers. The original activity was purely as a servicebased company specializing in the repair, maintenance and service of woodworking machinery but quickly evolved into the supply of used followed by quality new machinery. To date, the company has taken a steady approach and become an independent national supplier of woodworking machinery, yet despite

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 68

this growth, the very roots of the business have not changed. Says MD Carl O’Meara: “We are still the same family owned company we were over 30 years ago, albeit a little busier these days. Our aim has always been to offer the best quality machinery along with the best level of service, no matter what size your company is.” Consequently, over the years the company has naturally benefitted from the continuation of supply of machinery to many customers as they have grown. Typical of this are several manufacturers who have started out using one of our Genisis sliding

table panel saws and have progressed into CNC where a nesting machine has been supplied along with the Parametric Cabinet CAD, all delivered with full training and fully supported for peace of mind. Over the last few years there has been an increased demand for more automation, where, due to the lack of availability of skilled labor, manufacturers needing ‘on demand’ and ‘just in time’ solutions have moved from manually operated machines to CNC where the productivity and accuracy of production far exceed manual production techniques. Says Carl: “One of the areas of constant growth >>

over the last few years has been the AES CNC machines. For the panel processors, both the CNC drilling machines and flat table nesting machines have proved to be fast and reliable solutions as have the Alpha beamsaws. There has also been a strong demand for the pod and rail style machines for processing fire doors and stair parts.” To compliment the nesting and panel sizing machines we also now have a series of high-quality, heavy-duty edge banding machines available with features such as pre milling, anti-adhesive spray, corner rounding, nesting solution, profile and glue scrapers. There is also the option of a separate PUR gluepot with the heavy duty 2RTF machine also having CNC control for automatic setting between different thickness tape and board. Carl says: “For over 30 years we have been supplying and supporting our customers and introducing them to new manufacturing techniques. We believe we have one of the best ranges of machinery available and give unrivalled support if and when required.” For further details on J&C O’Meara’s range of products go to www.ukwoodworkingmachinery. co.uk or telephone them on 01704 893109.

Adhesives Maximising the efficiency of adhesive application in the wood industry Meler offers complete solutions for thermoplastic and reactive adhesive application in the furniture industry. Each installation is unique, but all manufacturers share common production challenges for which the know-how of Meler offers a solution. Adhesive application technology in the wood industry allows significant improvements to be made with regard to moisture and temperature, and also improves the mechanical resistance of materials. However, attaining an installation for the efficient application of industrial adhesives is not always easy. Meler, a specialist in the manufacture of complete bonding systems, highlights the key aspects for achieving profitability within this business. Easy-clean technology to reduce maintenance costs The production capacity of the work lines and the quality of the final product largely depend on good maintenance. It is vital to facilitate

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 72

“in-situ” cleaning tasks through full accessibility to the interior of the machines, offering greater modularity in the design of components to guarantee usability and the autonomy of the line operator. Meler easy-clean technology arises from the user experience to optimise daily work in a 100% safe environment. Energy efficiency and care for the adhesive The right technology allows the bonding temperature of the adhesives to be precisely controlled, as well as the necessary quantity for each application. We are talking about “on demand bonding”: a technology that guarantees minimal energy consumption, and which also keeps the adhesive in perfect conditions, avoiding costs associated with poor maintenance. The Meler range of fusers offers this functionality even in high production demand situations thanks to its non-stop design, which allows the adhesive to be reloaded without the need to stop production.

Specific solutions for each application The needs of manufacturers depend on the characteristics of their production processes. While some opt to use more economical adhesives, such as EVA for bonding edges, others prefer to use PUR due to its resistance to water and heat. In recent years, Meler has seen demand for closed systems with lamination applicators grow due to their advantages in terms of maintenance and cleaning. The market is evolving and the key lies in knowing how to assist clients in their production challenges, offering them a full range of specific solutions. Focke Meler is a business group founded in 1988 that is present in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the UK and the US and is dedicated to the design and manufacture of solutions for the application of hot-melt adhesives and sealants in numerous industrial sectors. +34 948 351 110 / +34 616 103 194 www.meler.eu

necessary for the cross-linking reaction and outstanding bonding performance. Depending on the concentration, diisocyanate carries a health risk when emitted as a vapor. Containing less than 0.1% monomeric diisocyanate, Technomelt PUR Micro Emission adhesives have no hazardous label, do not require specific professional training for operators, and offer an easy and safe handling in production. Nobody likes warning labels, and the fact that these can now be eliminated has huge benefits not only to the company but for end users, whilst still providing them with a PUR adhesive used for bonding all commonly used edging materials; PVC, ABS, veneer and solid wood to core boards. A tailor-made suit for furniture panels

Panel and profile lamination have become increasingly sophisticated in the furniture market. Over the years, various players throughout the whole supply chain have continuously created new materials and new finishes; the goal being to transform an unprocessed material like a simple raw panel into an appealing finished product, like furniture fronts. Taka has always followed these trends, developing new innovative adhesives capable of working with any new material introduced to the market. Starting from a wood derivative such as chipboard or MDF, Taka can either laminate the flat surface alone or including the shaped edges. There is a vast range of decorative foils on offer, such as paper, PET, Polypropylene or PVC, with both glossy and matt finishes. For all these materials Taka has specially formulated a single adhesive, the TK 2308.38P, that can be applied by means of a slot nozzle on the foil or by a roller coater on the panels. In both cases a perfectly even glue line is obtained, able to create a mirror surface finish with high gloss plastic foils. Thanks to its hardness after cooling, it allows handling without risk of dents on the flat

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 76

surface of the panel. This is only the first step of processing, improving the aesthetic appearance of the flat surfaces. Now, after the laminated panel has been cut to size, it is time to close and seal the edges. Depending on the shape of the panel there are either four sides or in the case of a soft-formed panel, two or three sides to edge band. Edgebanding is another very important process with two purposes: To embellish the grained edge of the • panel To seal the small gap between the edge • and the top to prevent the penetration of water or steam, which is of essential importance in the case of products for kitchens or bathrooms Taka offers suitable Hotmelt Polyurethane Reactive adhesives (HMPUR) for this application. This type of adhesive, compared to traditional non-reactive hotmelt glues based on EVA and PO, gives the finished product a superior performance compared to any other type of hotmelt adhesive in terms of heat resistance of over 150°C and water resistance to D4. There are different adhesives with particular characteristics available. For example, TK 3308.5

adhesive with a transparent glue line is suitable for processes where many different edge colours are used. Thanks to the transparent glue line and the low application weight (100-120g/ m2), the colour of the edge band reflects and reduces the visibility of the glue line. The traditional and most versatile adhesive is the TK 3308.20 for all types of panels such as MDF, multilayer chipboard, solid wood and many more. It also helps to reduce the glue consumption to 100-130 g/m2, depending on the type of roller installed on the machine. Finally, Taka has developed a monomer reduced version, the TK 3308.20ME PUR hot melt adhesive with a content of free isocyanate of less than 0.1% that meets all current legislation. After foil lamination and edgebanding, the transformation from a raw panel to a highly appealing quality product is completed. For advice and consultancy on the use and application of Hotmelt Polyurethane adhesives the WPR-TAKA Academy is always available at academy@wprtaka.it. Celebrating 25 years of Hybond Adhesive specialist, Hybond, has entered its 25th year of business. A quarter of a century has seen this family firm grow from suppliers of technical adhesives, to modern day technical bonding specialists who supply not only adhesive products, but innovative bonding solutions and services to a variety of sectors. Hybond’s focus is to provide full solutions to its customers’ bonding requirements, including consultation, application trials, and bespoke solutions to complex problems. Whilst a reliable source of technical adhesive products, the company also has the ability to test goods to industry standards in its fully-equipped laboratory, provide bespoke productions lines with Hybond Machine Systems, plus its customers benefit from provisions such as its free of charge Process Review Service. Another popular service is the Hybond site audit. At the time of writing, members of the Hybond technical team were visiting a customer’s site to carry out a bonding line audit on their large-scale furniture production operation, which includes a significant edgebanding installation. The day’s audit involved various tests to ensure that everything happening within the customer’s edgebanding works was within the correct parameters. Hybond’s technical director, Adrian Dalrymple, explains some of the checks carried out, such as applying reversed edging to a panel which can then be deconstructed with ease, allowing for careful examination of bond line characteristics. “Such examinations provide us with essential

information, and can show if the adhesive coating weight is perhaps too high or low, maybe the guide plate setting is incorrect with the roller touching the panel or too far away; there are many factors that the experienced eyes of our technical team can identify and correct to optimise output,” he says. Application of adhesive is critical; if applied at the wrong temperature, the customer is likely to encounter bond failures and quality issues. During their audit, the Hybond team checked the adhesive tank temperature using a non-

contact infra-red thermometer. They checked the application roller too, as experience has taught that RTD sensors (Resistance Temperature Detector) can become faulty over time, and although systems may be reporting correct levels, the critical application temperature at the roller might not be optimum. For today’s customer, Hybond were happy to confirm ideal parameters were met, due to the success of a regular auditing schedule. Back at the lab … The team will complete their audit by returning to the Hybond Laboratory, with sample edged panels from the customer which will be put through a series of tests such as high temperature exposure in one of the laboratory’s climatic chambers. Technical manager, Dr. Karl Kaye, explains that “Following exposure to heightened temperature and other climatic variables during a typical climate chamber cycle, we would expect to see failure of the component parts prior to failure of a successful adhesive bond”. Within the Hybond laboratory, a wide variety of tests are run to industry standards, such as those laid out by FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association). Adhesion testing and treatments routinely carried out by its team include: climate, peel, and surface energy testing, plasma treatment, high intensity UV treatment, digital data logging, and digital microscope analysis. Edgebanding – how to make it perfect Technology in edgebanding machines is becoming increasingly complex, but no matter which edging, which machine, which adhesive system and which technology a company works with, some rules must always and fundamentally be observed. The Ostermann edging experts give seven useful tips everyone should follow. The be-all and end-all of edging processing is regular and professional maintenance of the machine. A perfect edging result depends on a perfect coordination of all parameters. It is important, above all, that the scraper is always sharp. The correct adjustment of the pressure rolls should also be checked during maintenance. In addition, a few tips can be used to optimise results on the edgebanding machine. Tip No. 1 – Clean Transport Tracks If you are often processing high-gloss or super matt surfaces, you should clean the machine parts and in particular the transport tracks with a suitable product. That prevents dust and dirt from settling in the still fresh glue joint. In practice, cleaning with REDOCOL greenline Teclinex One For All has proven to be effective. The cleaner is based on sustainable, plant-based raw materials and can be used for both surface and machine cleaning.

The gluepot should be cleaned routinely. Adhesive incrustations on the edge of the gluepot should always be removed immediately.

Tip No. 2: Clean Gluepot Always remove adhesive incrustations at the edge of the gluepot immediately. After applying PUR hotmelt adhesives, use a flushing agent, such as the REDOCOL PUR cleaner. The product is suited for EVA hotmelt adhesives as well, e.g., to make a quick colour or material change. If you exclusively apply EVA hotmelt adhesives, it is advisable to use a special cleaning agent such as the Acmosol 130-102 for hotmelt gluepots.

Tip No. 3: Use a Test Edging You can best test the adhesive application with a transparent test edging, such as the Ostermann PVC edging Transparent without Primer. If you see the glue roll’s application pattern in the glue film on the board, it might be a sign that the pressure rolls are not adjusted correctly, that the glue has become too cold, or that the distance between workpiece and glue applicator roll is too small.

Sure – there is no such thing as a dust-free workshop, but that is precisely why the machine should be regularly maintained and cleaned

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 80

25/03/2022 16:57

81

Be careful in winter: boards that are stored outside or come directly from trucks are too cold for processing

Tip No. 4: Check Temperature Temperature is one of the most important factors when processing edging on a machine. If the adhesive is at the wrong temperature or cools down too quickly – in summer due to draughts or in winter in a workshop that is too cold – the edgings cannot adhere properly. The temperature should therefore be checked regularly and at various points during the processing procedure. Ostermann’s thermometer is of good service to check the temperature in the gluepot. For the glue application roller and the board temperature, the Ostermann experts recommend the infrared thermometer. Tip No. 5: Measure Wood Moisture If the board material is too moist, faulty bonding will occur. The water in the board sweats out towards the warm side of the board. A film of moisture is created which prevents an optimal bond from forming between the furniture board (chipboard or MDF) and the adhesive film. Here, too, it is important to measure regularly. The ideal wood moisture content for chipboard is approx. 6%. Tip No. 6: Manually Tighten the Radius If adhesive residues or small chatter marks are still visible on the edging after machine processing, you can subsequently remove

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 81

Trust is a good thing, but control is a better one. Often the temperature display for the hotmelt gluepot does not show the actual temperature.

them with the REDOCOL scraper for radius. The scraper for radius has three different cutguiding recesses for edgings of 0.4, 1 and 2mm thickness. Tip No. 7: Remove Stress Whitening If the edgings still need to be smoothed after machine processing, the REDOCOL sisal brush

is the product of choice. Due to its special sisalcloth combination, the brush is the perfect tool to remove processing traces, material residues and stress whitening. Stress whitening that has occurred in extreme inner or outer radii can be easily removed afterwards with a hot air dryer. sales.uk@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Hot-melt glue switching on Homag edge banders made easier than ever Homag has developed an interchangeable hot-melt glue feature on select edge banding machines. The new system enables the rapid change of glue types, eliminating time-consuming cleaning issues. EVA and PUR hot-melt glues can now be conveniently dispensed separately using the same universal application melting unit. Fast, clean change between EVA and PUR hot-melt glues The new glue feature permits two types or colours of glue to be changed over in a matter of minutes. The unit features two interchangeable containers – suitable for PUR cartridges or EVA granulate – which enable the glues to be conveniently switched. A programmable glue application and gravity feed system ensure that the unit delivers just the right amount of glue for each application. There is no mixing and cross-contamination of glues or time-consuming cleaning required on the unit. Quick and easy maintenance Ergonomically designed handles allow the containers to be removed from or inserted into the melting unit quickly and easily. The application unit can either be replaced without cleaning the machine or simply emptied and refilled in the machine. A self-purge function to

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 82

Polyurethane (PUR) hot-melt adhesives are ideal for edge banding furniture to be used in humid rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens and laboratories. EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate), a copolymer adhesive is, however, the carpenter’s preferred lower-cost choice of adhesive for other applications where these humidity resistance properties are not necessary. To cater for all edge banding applications and manufacturing requirements Homag has created three versions of the glue processing unit: One for processing both EVA and PUR alternately (new), one for exclusively processing EVA (new) or – as before – one for exclusively processing PUR. These options are available on Homag’s customisable Edgeteq S-240/S-300 and S-380 profiLine series of edge banding machines. Sanding Automation and innovation put Mirka ahead at KBB

Mirka UK focused on tooling automation and innovation at KBB, with the UK show debut of the new Mirka® AIOS 353CV on stand T60. Throughout the event, Mirka ran live demos of this new electric sanding head designed for Cobot usage to highlight how it makes the toughest jobs look easy. The new Mirka® AIOS 353CV with its 81x133mm head has been engineered for finessing to ensure consistent quality, while increasing efficiency and productivity. Its rectangular design makes it suitable for industrial processes such as furniture, door, and window manufacturing, where a rectangular sanding solution is required. The sander is built inside a lightweight aluminium housing, which features an ISO 9409-1 compatible flange for mechanical robot coupling. This tool also offers the end user

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 84

maximum flexibility because the flange can be adapted to fit all mechanical couplings. To complement the Mirka® AIOS, a comprehensive range of hand sanders will be spearheaded by the Mirka® DEROS sander, which has been developed to deliver a rapid, efficient, consistently powerful performance even under a heavy load. It also puts the user first with an ergonomic design that minimises vibration levels and reduces arm fatigue, which decreases the risk of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome. The Mirka® AROS battery sander and Mirka® DEOS will also be on display. The AROS-B is a brushless, battery-driven cordless sander that has both orbital and random orbital movements. It has been developed for use across multiple solid surface sanding operations including finessing, and Corian® sanding applications. It allows the user to maximise productivity, while

producing the high quality and consistently smooth finish expected from Mirka tools. The DEOS has been designed to get closer to the surface, easily accessing hard to reach areas and delivering a flawless smooth finish quicker than other sanders. In addition, it is the only electric orbital sander on the market that has been optimised for net abrasives by incorporating more than 45 holes in the pad. “Over the last few years, we have seen businesses investing in automated manufacturing processes and our R&D team has been hard at work developing tools to meet this demand,” says Pete Sartain, national sales manager – Industrial of Mirka UK. “An example of this development is the AIOS, which we demoed throughout the event to highlight its versatility across multiple applications.” www.mirka.com

and switches to adjust, on first glance the control panel may look somewhat minimalistic compared to other manufacturers. However, there are actually two ways to operate the machine, either through the new touchscreen or by the manual control elements which gives direct access to all the machine movements. The Kundig Perfect also utilises the patented and renowned oblique sanding technique, which puts the last sanding head at a 10-degree angle to the travel of the material being sanded. As has been proven in so many cutting applications, this gives a far superior finish and in the case of sanding, eliminates the snake like oscillation marks – an inherent flaw of straight-line sanding whereby any defect of the abrasive is transmitted directly on to the surface. This system also increases the life of the abrasive whilst giving a less fibrous surface finish. Other features of the new Kundig Perfect include automated setting of the contact roller to the grit abrasive being used; automatic setting of the machine over the whole width of the material to be sanded; automatic and programmable pressure control for the segments and for sanding the edges; high efficiency vacuum bed, and pivoting control panel for operator comfort.

The Perfect is available in either 1350 or 1600mm working widths and is offered in various combinations, having two or three sanding heads with contact rollers, segmented

pads and cross belts. Further options include structure brush, infeed and outfeed tables etc. 0845 833 0565 www.kundig.co.uk

Products The new Combi-MR4 with Dynamic 360° ™ steering

Since Combilift launched its first C4000 model in 1998, multidirectional capability has been one of the major hallmarks of the company’s wide range of handling solutions. 24 years and thousands of R&D hours later, its latest product takes multidirectional capability to the next level. The Combi-MR4 is a four-wheel electric-powered multidirectional reach-truck, which incorporates Combilift’s new Dynamic 360° ™ steering, which provides rotation on each wheel, enabling seamless directional change of the truck while on the move. The system allows this extremely agile forklift

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 90

to work in forward, sideward and crab steer mode, guaranteeing swift operation and excellent manoeuvrability. Hence the full name of the new model – the Combi-MR4 Dynamic 360. The impetus for the development of this latest addition to Combilift’s portfolio was to develop a multidirectional truck, with a very low platform to maximise storage density within racking. The CombiMR4 is available in two unique models, with capacity ranges of 2,500Kg - 3,000kg and 3,500Kg - 4,500kg respectively, and can operate in aisles as narrow as 2265mm when guided (based on 1200mm deep material).

“The system allows this extremely agile forklift to work in forward, sideward and crab steer mode, guaranteeing swift operation and excellent manoeuvrability” To maximise all storage space in racking systems, the wheel configuration of two drive wheels at the rear and two sets of smaller dual front wheels provides a platform height as low as 380mm, allowing otherwise redundant areas towards the floor to be used. In keeping with Combilift’s common overall design ethos, the highly versatile Combi-MR4 can handle long loads as well as palletised goods with ease, and

can load and offload from delivery trucks. Driver comfort and safety are also major considerations, and this new truck definitely delivers the goods from an ergonomic point of view: a high visibility operator cabin, multi-function control joystick, ACelectric power steering and joystick operated hydraulic mast functions all make for a smooth ride and straightforward operation. The articulated rear axle with two rear rubber drive wheels provides

25/03/2022 16:58

optimum traction for outdoor use, while still ensuring nimble and accurate truck placement. To achieve this level of manoeuvrability, Combilift utilised its newly developed-in-house Dynamic 360°™ steering. This novel steering concept enables operators to manipulate the truck’s positioning and orientation without the need to stop and change driving mode. Intuitive and easy-to-operate, this is achieved by simply twisting the control joystick right or left to adjust the wheel positions simultaneously – providing crab steering and allowing direction change on-the-go. Combilift always likes to ensure that any new product has been thoroughly tried and tested in the field to make certain that it is 100% fit for purpose. Following the initial operation of 3,000kg CombiMR4 units, a 4,500kg model was developed after receiving a request from Combilift’s dealer in the BeNeLux region – Mabo BeNeLux, for a larger capacity unit for their customer TABS (Timber and Building Supplies Holland). One of the Netherlands’ leading

suppliers of timber products and building materials, with 104 outlets across the country, TABS has partnered with Combilift and operated its multidirectional trucks for more than 15 years. It now has MR4 trucks at several locations in the Netherlands and is about to take delivery of its 15th and 16th trucks, which will work at its distribution centres in Zaandam and Bleiswijk. “TABS are delighted with the ongoing successful implementation of their Combi-MR4s and the

improved levels of efficiency thanks to the overall design and features such as low platform height as well as the advanced Dynamic 360° ™ steering system,” comments Combilift CEO, Martin McVicar. “I have no doubt that this new additional electric model will grow Combilift’s customer base. We are looking forward to showcasing the Combi-MR4 to our existing dealers, and potential new customers during the LogiMAT Intralogistics exhibition in Stuttgart at the end of May.” www.combilift.com/combi-mr4/

Advanced material processing with the Elcon vertical panel saw Elcon vertical panel saws provide safe and accurate cutting solutions not only for wood-based panels, but also advanced materials including plastics, non-ferrous metals and composites. Croylek Ltd of Croyden recently invested in an Elcon 155DS wall saw to provide an in-house precision cut-tosize service. Phenolic boards, epoxy glass panels and other insulation materials are processed on demand to customers’ exact requirements. Previously Croylek had outsourced the cutting or used CNC machines to route material to size, but this proved slow and inefficient. “The Elcon certainly gives us a much quicker turnaround on jobs,” comments general manager, Gary Bowyer. “That in itself makes the work more economic so we can

F&JP338_Pages (1).indd 92

offer better pricing for the products to our customers. It’s also a clean and relatively quiet operation compared to other sawing operations we run elsewhere in the factory.” The Elcon DS model includes double cut scoring, automatic frame adjustment and repeat strip cutting facility as standard. As part of the specification, Croylek opted for electronic digital scales to the vertical and horizontal cutting positions, allowing for repeat cutting accuracy between operators of just 0.1mm. Gary enthuses: “Daltons Wadkin have been very attentive to our needs and requirements. They were proactive in helping us with the part exchange of an existing machine as part of the purchase package, which we were very happy about. “The after sales service has also

been very good, particularly with regard to the training of our staff.” Daltons Wadkin, sole distributors for Elcon in the UK and Ireland, provided a turnkey installation package including delivery, offloading, commissioning and certificated operator training. Ongoing support is provided for the lifetime of the machine through regionally-based service engineers.

Optimise experience and innovation with Salvamac’s SalvaPush_2000_TT

SalvaPush_2000_TT

Longstanding experience in the business of woodworking machinery, over 250 installations in the UK and Ireland, an export share close to 85 percent and revenues growing exponentially as a result of strong focus on products and on the peculiarities of each market, and even more on the real needs of users. This is an up-to-date profile of Salvamac Group, an international network with four production units based between Italy and Poland. The company has succeeded in acquiring a leading role in woodworking solutions, offering a wide range of machines from entry-level models to sophisticated automation, all sharing the

same mission: increasing the speed, accuracy, profitability and safety of wood cutting and dust extraction. This is the approach Salvamac adopted to enter the UK market, where it has been operating for many years. “We always pay great attention to this market, a sign of our determination to achieve success in a very important market”, says Christian Salvador, founder of Salvamac Group. “A positive balance for Salvamac, with results that – after the start and the inevitable “calm” of recent years – have been improving again, thanks to restored market stability and most of

all to the increasing market shares acquired by Salvamac Group.” With this personal and company philosophy, the business finds continuous space for innovative new ideas, products and production systems. The leading product within Salvamac’s optimising saw range is the SalvaPush_2000_TT – an optimising saw equipped with a pusher characterised by maximum flexibility, that has recently been equipped with a new system for the automatic unloading of cut pieces. The three-axis heavy duty ejector pushes the complete sequence of the cut pieces during

the phase of retraction of the pusher, before unloading the cut pieces on a special collecting area. The new system can also select the single cut piece and eject it to maintain the cutting sequence. The automation is completed by a new trap door system that, thanks to the innovative solution that allows the trap door to open and close, is fixed on the cutting machine unit, in a unique system with more accuracy and bigger capacity. Beyond automation, recent developments have focused on a brand new version of software which allows anyone to manage it simply and completely like a smartphone, with website graphics and all the practicality for setting data of a large touch screen, in digital communication among all electronic components. Not only that, the recent developments in barcode data import and the relative “just in time” management systems (from the development of the customer’s order to the finished product) make it a unique solution on the market for production processes, even in single batches. Flexible and cutting-edge technical solutions make it possible to communicate both upstream and downstream with company software management, thus creating fundamental

Christian Salvador, founder of Salvamac Group

principles of industry 4.0. The cutting range is also complemented by the Classic cutting saws, characterised by the 3S of Salvamac’s philosophy – Solid, Simple and Safe. Solid, because they are designed and made to work even in difficult conditions and with heavy wood. The structure is made entirely of hard painted steel, very thick and very resistant. Safe, thanks to the two-hand safety control in

an ergonomic position and the blade protection cover. Simple, because the ease of use is increased by the new successful Salvastop 100 device; the evolution of the numerical control length positioning and stop system. This solution saves on labour costs, increases productivity and decreases the occurence of human error. www.salvamac.com

HIMACS lends luminosity to The Paradise Now bar in Düsseldorf Düsseldorf restaurateur, Walid El Sheikh, joined with Moritz von Schrötter and Charles Bals from design agency, Parasol Island, to bring this versatile mix of restaurant, bar and club to life. The centrepiece of the bar is its spectacular custom-made counter, which measures an impressive 16m long and can seat around 30 guests. HIMACS solid surface material in the colour ‘Arctic White’ was used for the work surface at the back of the counter, while ‘Ispani’ from the LX Hausys Marmo collection was used for the visible part of the countertop, and the front and side elements of the counter. The designers took full advantage of the one-of-a-kind visual properties of the solid surface material, which align perfectly with the current trend of a high-quality marble aesthetic. When the bar is lit up in the evening, the marbling of the solid surface material shines

through even more. Stylish wall panels, also in backlit HIMACS, with inset elements at different depths, cover 10m of the back wall behind the bar. Walid El Sheikh was highly impressed with HIMACS’ versatility

and flexibility, including the extensive colour range available and the ease of processing and thermoformability. “The first time I saw HIMACS was in a hotel bathroom, and I was immediately taken by the unique

look and feel of the solid surface material,” comments owner, Walid El Sheikh. “It’s like stone, but with a smooth, non-porous surface and consistency of colour that put it in a superior class!” www.himacs.eu/en

Manufacturing and engineering SMEs expect staff to return to the workplace

Most of the UK’s Manufacturing and engineering SMEs are expecting their employees to return to the workplace full-time, and while resistance is expected from some, many business owners are prepared to take disciplinary action to ensure their return, according to the latest independent research from Close Brothers Asset Finance.

Key findings • 64% of Manufacturing and engineering SMEs expect employees to return to the workplace full-time now that restrictions have been largely lifted, while 25% are offering hybrid working; only 8% have stated their employees can continue to work from home • 58% anticipate employees currently based at home will resist coming into the workplace, compared to 28% who won’t; 10% are ‘unsure’ • 47% of Manufacturing and engineering firms are prepared to start disciplinary proceedings against employees who refuse to return to the workplace, against 36% who will not When asked, “with Covid restrictions easing across the UK, will you expect

your firm’s employees to be back in the workplace?” there were subtle differences in response when it came to company size and location. For companies who employ 11-60 and 60-250 people, the expectation of full-time return to the workplace is 71% and 73% respectively, against the UK average of 57% (Manufacturing and Engineering – 64%). From a regional perspective, Greater London (71%) and the South West (66%) firms are the most likely to want to see their employees back in the workplace permanently. At 47% and well below the national average, female bosses are far less likely to insist their staff return fulltime than their male counterparts (63%). When asked, “do you anticipate employees currently based at home to resist coming into the workplace?” manufacturing and

engineering firms (58% v 49% UK avg.) are well ahead of general UK sentiment, while from a regional perspective, it’s Greater London (65%), North West (63%) and North East (61%) who anticipate the most resistance from workers. “Based on the lessons from the pandemic, it’s likely firms will take a more flexible approach, particularly with operations and support staff who, for the most part, successfully transitioned to a home-based work environment,” comments Steve Gee, CEO of Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Industrial Equipment Division. “For many, there are multiple benefits to having their teams back in the workplace and seeing each other in person, including the ability to build real relationships and have more opportunities to network, learn, collaborate, and share skills.” www.closeassetfinance.co.uk

HPP and Egger partner on sustainability initiative Sustainability is a partnership in action between board, doors and furniture fittings manufacturer and supplier, Hill’s Panel Products (HPP), and chipboard maker, Egger. The two businesses are working in tandem to ensure that their respective plants and products the greenest they can be, with their efforts documented in the latest HPP catalogue for its trade customers. Oldham-based HPP makes and supplies an expansive range of full and processed sheet material, vinyl wrapped furniture doors and fittings, while Egger is one of its major suppliers of melamine faced chipboard products – all made from wood from PEFC and FSC accredited forests. “Chipboard from Egger is a carbon positive material, it stores more carbon than it releases,” says HPP’s business development and marketing director, Dan Mounsey. “Chipboard has a 10 to 20-year lifecycle and then you can recycle it again afterwards. We are both keen to get that message through to our customers and their consumers, and we are doing everything we can to support it.”

Egger, which has been supplying HPP throughout the majority of its 30-year history, has created a dedicated area on its website showing how its teams sustainably source the materials used to make its wood-based products. Its founder, Fritz Egger Senior, is famous in the timber-based product industry for his comment: “Wood is far too valuable to just throw away”. Dan Mounsey adds: “We are taking account of sustainability with everything we do; from our vehicles, to our processes and packaging, to day-to-day operations. “Our operations are certified as zero landfill which means that less than 1% of waste from our plant went into landfill last year. We recycle as much as we can; we burn our offcuts; we have our own boilers that heat various buildings, and we have multiple solar panel installations. “We have moved from polystyrene corner protectors on our doors and worktops to pulpbased protectors and all of our deliveries are now paperless. We are already doing a lot, but are also conscious that moving forward we can and need to do more.”

HPP has also just added the first all-electric car to its sales fleet with more to follow and is investing in eight new HGVs that meet clean air zone regulations. Egger UK, meanwhile, is amongst the largest users of recycled wood in the industry, with 40 per cent of one of its chipboard panels being made using recycled wood. Its other sustainability credentials include: • Over €500m invested in its 20 plants worldwide to make its technology the most efficient available. • Sustainable water systems that cleanse surface water from its plants before it is released into local rivers. Egger is also raising awareness of its four recycling plants operated by subsidiary company, Timberpak. It saved 71,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2020-21 by burning unusable wood residue to create heat rather than using natural gas. www.hpponline.co.uk www.egger.com

A HIMACS kitchen island as a functional work of art Architect, Trix van der Mark, from Interieurwerken Bone Solid in the Netherlands created this unique kitchen to bring an unexpected spin on sleek, elegant design. HIMACS proved the perfect fit for the project, with its play on shapes and curves. The customer wanted an original kitchen, with organic and fluid shapes that create more of a work of art than a kitchen, all while maintaining the functionality. The specifications required a versatile, robust, hygienic material and a flawless design. “In the quest for an innovative material, the customer came to us following a recommendation from Baars & Bloemhoff, a HIMACS distributor in the Netherlands,” says Trix. “She was looking for a company that could tell her

more about HIMACS in terms of its possibilities, treatment and design. She was immediately thrilled by the way the material could blend into a space and become its centerpiece.” To preserve the space’s modern look, the façades and worktop of the island were created in HIMACS to produce harmonious, perfect curves. The result is a seamless design with a HIMACS sink, a hob, three drawer units, a cupboard, an open space for towels and a dishwasher. This innovative island demonstrates not only how versatile HIMACS is: infinitely thermoformable and nonporous with no visible seams, but also how a clear vision and understanding of the material by the designer means that there really are infinite possibilities. www.himacs.eu
