Comment With depressing and concerning economic news currently swirling around us, I was heartened earlier this month to spend time with two creative and determined Newcastlebased furniture and joinery manufacturers finding ongoing success in differing markets, both here and overseas.

yet they both shared almost all of the fundamentals required to carve out a successful business in our industry. Now, it may be a case of rose-tinted spectacles after two years being confined to barracks by you know what, but I am aware of a steelier resolve among From the evidence I am seeing on the ground, month in and month out, the businesses which were faring OK pre-Spring 2020, and which have managed to navigate the 24-month stronger and wiser. Most of the businesses I’ve met with recently have invested in their technical capability, as well as creating further efficiencies in so doing, making their offering more attractive than ever before. Both Damian Cronin Ltd, in this issue on page 56, and Nicklin Ltd are wonderful examples of this new breed of confident furniture and joinery manufacturers making decisive strides forward and creating new business opportunities because of what they have proactively been doing, and are continuing to do. I hope you enjoy the issue,

Introducing The Plus Norwegian furniture manufacturer, Vestre, has opened the doors to The Plus – the company’s highly anticipated new factory in Magnor, Norway. This pioneering 7000m2 furniture factory, designed by renowned Danish architectural firm, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), is the result of a significant NOK 300m investment. Said to be “the world’s most environmentally friendly furniture factory”, The Plus is a global showcase of sustainable and highly efficient production. ”The Plus is a factory for the people!” explains Stefan Tjust, CEO of Vestre. “It is a project we have put an enormous amount of soul and energy into. This is an important day for us, but also for the Norwegian mainland industry and the Scandinavian export cooperation.” The factory comprises four

production areas – the Color Factory, the Wood Factory, Assembly, and Warehouse, which are situated in four wings around the courtyard. At the property’s heart is its visitor centre, which will play host to school groups, students, companies and private individuals. Constructed from locally-sourced timber and running on local hydropower, The Plus is located at the intersection of a road and a production line, forming a big plus shape that connects all aspects of manufacturing. “To us, The Plus is a crystalclear example of Hedonistic Sustainability – showing us how our sustainable future will not only be better for the environment, but also more beautiful to work in and more fun to visit,” explains Bjarke Ingels, founding partner and creative director, BIG.

Sustainability, environmental considerations, and transparency are central tenets of all aspects of the factory. From ensuring good working conditions, to facilitating electrified heavy transport and managing the forest areas around The Plus. The building’s energy consumption is 60 percent lower than for similar conventional factories, while emitting 55 percent lower greenhouse gas emissions

than a comparable factory. On the green rooftop, there are around 900 solar panels that will generate approximately 250,000kWh of renewable energy per year. Furthermore, the factory will reuse 90-95 percent of the water used in the production. The Plus will achieve the Paris Proof target for energy efficiency and on-site energy production. www.vestre.com

Cut the cord Join the cordless revolution with Lamello. This September, the Swiss fixings specialist will be launching its first battery powered Classic X and Zeta P2 biscuit joiners in the UK. To date, the Zeta P2 biscuit joiner and Classic X biscuit joiner have remained a firm favourite amongst furniture manufacturers and a chosen hand tool for those looking for a fast and effective way to joining panels and solid wood. Now, with the launch of the Zeta P2 cordless and Classic X cordless, users can benefit from the same level of precision and flexibility without being restricted by the need for a separate power outlet. Putting speed and ease-of-use at the forefront of every application, both models offer full mobility in the workshop or on-site thanks to a powerful 18V LiHd 4.0 Ah battery pack. Cooled by a patented aircooled system, it’s been designed to offer longer service life and quick

charging time. Both ready-to-use cordless models also offer a quick and easy solution for undertaking overhead work due to their lightweight, cordless design and, with no additional attachments, eliminate any potential trip hazards. To coincide with the launch of the new cordless joiners, Lamello has partnered with the Cordless Alliance Systems (CAS), a crossbrand battery pack alliance initiated by Metabo that includes more than 300 machines from 30 reputable manufacturers. This means workshops only need to use one battery pack for multiple tools – saving time and money. “The Zeta P2 cordless and Classic X cordless offer users even more flexibility thanks to their battery drive and compact design,” says Shaye Chatfield, Lamello area sales manager for the UK and Ireland. “Performance hasn’t been impacted by the design change

either. In fact, the Zeta P2 cordless can easily perform 60 grooves into a Beech panel when using a 4.0 Ah battery or 115 if you upgrade to a 5.5 Ah battery pack, and it takes as little as 80 minutes to fully charge. Plus, when purchasing a cordless product from Lamello,

the customer gains access to an open battery pack system that can be used for multiple tools in one workshop.” The new cordless machines will be available from 5th September 2022. www.lamello.co.uk

Innovation and new trends at the centre of the SCM Deutschland Open House An open window to the future of woodworking: this was the concept behind “SCM Innovationstage”, the event organised in the Technology Centre of SCM Deutschland in Nürtingen, from 18-20th May, and dedicated to the entire DACH market. The numerous technological solutions on show were met with considerable interest by the participating customers. Thanks to the SCM team, they were able to discover the production resources which are most in line with the demands of the sector and to test them live.

Accord 500

Maestro active CNC software machine Accord 500

From furniture to the machining of door and window frames, stairs and solid wood elements, the new SCM solutions were presented live with dedicated demos that displayed the different process stages. The event offered an occasion to see the Accord 500 in action for the first time. This new CNC machining centre is designed to optimise the machining of doors, windows, stairs

and solid wood elements with a 30% increase in productivity compared to market standards, excellent levels of finishing quality and over 100 tools always easily available. For panel machining, the great protagonist was Stefani X, the new industrial edgebanding machine developed to offer the highest machining quality on all types of panels and materials and to fully meet the needs of a digital, connected and integrated factory. There was also great curiosity for the Dmc wide belt sanders and the extraordinary aesthetic and highly customised effects that can be obtained with increasingly simple and intuitive processes thanks to the new “eye-S” control panel. The same control panel was also very popular among joinery machines, as were the Group’s other digital innovations. SCM wishes to thank all the partners and customers who joined the SCM Deutschland event to discover the latest SCM innovations and give further valuable insights to its team for ever more ‘future-proof’ solutions. www.scmgroup.com

All change at HPP as it looks to future-proof operations Looking to the future has created a raft of new opportunities at board, doors and fittings manufacturer and supplier, Hill’s Panel Products (HPP). As the Oldham-based business – which has just marked its 30th anniversary – looks to the next phase of its development, it has taken steps to future-proof its sales team. Leading the moves is Chris Essex, who steps up from his current role as area sales manager for Greater Manchester to become nationwide sales manager. Following in Chris’ footsteps in Greater Manchester is Michelle Topping, currently HPP’s sales office manager. Deon Phoenix, meanwhile, is stepping up from sales administrator to sales office supervisor, and Nichola Roddy is adding customer service and internal training responsibilities to her role as sales administrator. HPP’s business development and marketing director, Dan Mounsey, says: “This is all about

laying foundations for the future development of the company. We’ve enjoyed a huge amount of success over the last 30 years, and now we’re looking to the next generation of talent to take us into the next 30 years and build on what we’ve already achieved.” Chris will be managing HPP’s sixstrong area sales team in addition to overseeing the internal sales operation. He’s been at HPP for 18 years, starting out in a temporary job in door production, before moving on to other departments when his job became permanent. After four years away from the business, he returned as an area sales manager in 2017, eventually covering Greater Manchester – HPP’s core area. “We have a great team and I’m proud to be part of it,” he says. “We’ve put together a 12-month plan to look at product groups and pushing sales forward with the area sales team, and internally we’ll be focussing on product knowledge, competitor awareness and ensuring we are doing absolutely

everything we can do – building on the great job that Michelle has done.” In addition to the changes in the sales operation, Paul Wilson is HPP’s new distribution manager while Paul Boyes has stepped up to become warehouse and logistics manager. Paul Wilson was previously fittings manager and his promotion means he is taking on responsibility for three more areas: worktop warehouse, stock doors and the carrier team, which collates and packages orders from all over the site.

Paul Boyes, warehouse and logistics manager

Paul Boyes, meanwhile, was previously warehouse facilitator and has been recognised for the work he has done improving warehouse departments and locations. One of the first priorities for both men is to look at operations in the worktop warehouse. “We are tackling the processes in there, checking how we load and unload vehicles, how products are packed, if they’re packaged well enough, and if the packaging we use is fit for purpose,” explains Paul Wilson. www.hpponline.co.uk

Sleepeezee reports major sustainability wins for 2021 British bed and mattress manufacturer, Sleepeezee, has reported another sustainable year of trading as the company releases its 2021 figures. Since 1924, Sleepeezee has been building beds and mattresses that make a real difference. Through innovation and market-leading designs, Sleepeezee ensures that its products are made to the highest quality. Made and manufactured at its factory in Rochester, Kent, the company has a team of over 300 expert craftspeople who build their bespoke beds to premium standards. Sleepeezee understands that its customers are just as conscious about the environment, which is why it has been leading the way as a carbon-neutral company since 2017. Sleepeezee has sent no waste to landfill since 2012 and continues to offset its carbon emissions by utilising newly installed solar panels and by planting trees in its local community. In 2021, Sleepeezee produced 406.51 TCO2e (location-based),

which, when measured against its baseline year of 2018, sees a 27.62% reduction in its carbon footprint. “Since 2017, Sleepeezee has been consciously making changes to our operations in order to maintain our carbon neutral status,” says Andrew Reene, Health & Safety and Sustainability Manager at Sleepeezee. “We are proud to have noted positive changes in our carbon footprint across the company, most notably following the installation of our energy saving solar panels last year.” Since the installation of 591 energy-saving solar panels in 2021, the company has generated a total of 129.59 MWh of energy. 102.38MWh was consumed by the manufacturer, with the remainder being fed into the national grid, providing green electricity for the local area. The utilisation of solar panels has also significantly reduced Sleepeezee’s demand on the national grid and by generating its own energy, the company has avoided a total of 11.84 TCO2e

Blum celebrates 70 years alongside Queen and Country As the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee marked 70 years of service, fittings manufacturer, Blum, has also been celebrating its 70th anniversary. Established on the 1st March 1952, Blum originally made horseshoe studs after the founder, Julius Blum who was a farrier, realised that keeping the horses’ shoes on with a simple stud would stop them slipping in adverse weather. Just six years later the company made its first furniture hinge; the start of a business which

would come to dominate the furniture industry with subsidiaries throughout the world, a turnover of over €2.3 billion, and over 8,000 employees, as well as a thriving apprentice programme. Blum, however, like the Queen, has not rested on its laurels. The product range has leapt to numerous hinges, drawer runners and lift systems for wall units. The brand’s services are one of the best in the industry, with a technical department which is open 12 hours a day, every weekday, as well as Saturday mornings; a retail services

department which aids retailers in showing Blum products to their best advantage and numerous aids to installation and manufacture, both online and physical. In addition Blum offers a lifetime guarantee on all its products. “Hard work and determination spawn new opportunities,” says marketing team leader, Lisa Robinson. “At the heart of it all is our commitment to improve not just our products, but the service and support we offer all our partners. It’s in our nature.” www.blum.com

Hesse Lignal to replace all solvent-based products with sustainable alternatives by 2030 Hesse Lignal is heralding a new, greener era. The surface specialist from Hamm will be restructuring its product range, and by 2030 vows to have replaced all solventbased products with sustainable alternatives, as well as making use of regenerative raw materials. “As a family-run company, we feel compelled to assume responsibility for subsequent generations”, says Jens Hesse, a managing director of coating and stain producer, Hesse Lignal. “That’s why we want to take consistent action now, and contribute to preserving an exemplary world for our children and grandchildren.” This is the motivation for him joining forces with his co-managing director, Hans J. Hesse, in deciding to develop a new sustainability

strategy that envisages replacing all solvent-based products with sustainable alternatives by 2030. Reducing VOC emissions and expanding the proportion of sustainable raw materials This shift should make it possible, among other things, to minimise the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The VOCs contained in many solvents can evaporate even at low temperatures, and form groundlevel ozone on contact with UV rays. Volatile organic compounds can also be washed out of the air by precipitation. They then hit the earth and thus cause soil pollution. VOCs from fossil sources can, moreover, oxidize in

the atmosphere through contact with oxygen. This results in the production of climate-damaging CO2. In addition, indoor VOCs pollute the ambient air when they evaporate. These compounds can then irritate the respiratory tract of those present and cause allergies. The surface specialist from Hamm will also increasingly offer products made from regenerative resources, such as water or renewable raw materials. Its product range already includes products with a bio-renewable carbon (BRC) content of up to 30 per cent, and Hydro lacquers with a renewable proportion of around 10 per cent. The proportion of sustainable raw materials in its entire product portfolio is to be expanded by 2030 to conserve resources. Meeting future market demands “The switch to more climatefriendly products is also important in meeting future market demands,” comments Jens Hesse. “Environmental awareness in society is increasing, and younger generations in particular are attaching importance to climatefriendly production methods, so sustainability is becoming a decisive competitive factor for our industrial and craft customers.” Switching to more sustainable

products could furthermore protect employees from coming into contact with substances that are hazardous to health. Production of nitrocellulose lacquers to end in 2023 The research department at Hesse Lignal is working on the development of modern lacquer systems to enable the imposed goals to be achieved. The company has set itself a tight schedule in this respect: as early as by the end of 2023 Hesse Lignal will withdraw all nitrocellulose lacquers, solvent-based stains and solvent-based, acid-hardening lacquers from its product range. Hesse Lignal will therefore no longer be offering such products from January 2024. By 2030, all other products with a high VOC content will then be replaced by more climate-friendly alternatives. The company’s equipment and technology consultants are already assisting customers to convert their machinery and processes, thus enabling coating appliers to prepare for this in good time. “We are aware that this involves a major step”, says Jens Hesse. “But we’re also convinced that this measure is imperative if we don’t want to jeopardise the future of subsequent generations.” www.hesselignal.com

Hardwood import volumes ‘highest-this-century’ in Q1 2022 According to TDUK, hardwood import volumes shot up by 30% in Q1 2022 as compared to the same period in 2021 – the highest Q1 import volumes seen for this market during this century. This growth was largely driven by lower-priced temperate hardwoods from Latvia, which saw a 15% rise in volumes compared to Q1 2021. French oak also experienced considerable increases where imports more than doubled to reach 21,300m3, accounting for 41% of all oak imports. Overall, oak import volumes grew by 38% and their value by 45% in Q1 2022, as compared with Q1 2021. In addition to France, significant

growth also came from lower-priced oak imports from Romania, which matched volumes from Italy. While Europe continues to dominate the market as the source for 75% of hardwood imports by volume, the North American share has fallen as Africa, Asia, and Central and South America increased their slice of the market. “Whereas categories such as softwood have returned to more pre-pandemic levels, hardwood has witnessed a significant boom in Q1 2022,” says Timber Development UK CEO, David Hopkins. “It is evident that the pallet and packaging trade is driving much of the growth in Latvian hardwoods,

Step 2 It raises £270,000

Furnishing industry businesses from around the UK stepped up to the challenge and helped raise a colossal £270,000 for the Step 2 It campaign, organised by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the City of London livery company and charity for the furnishing industry. The campaign, which ran from May 2021 to April 2022, encouraged companies and individuals from the industry to organise sports-based challenges and events in aid of the charity. Throughout the year, hundreds of people got involved with the campaign, helping the charity beat its £250,000 target. In addition to countless events held around the country, Step 2 It was heavily supported by several sponsors from the trade. “Step 2 It clearly resonated with the industry as the support we received was phenomenal,” comments David Woodward, Immediate Past Master. “Every month there seemed to be a

new supporter-led event going on, whether it be a staff abseil, 24-hour ping pong tournament, fun run, hike, long-distance cycle, danceathon, charity ball, canal walk – we had the lot. “Thank you so much to everyone who organised or took part in a fundraiser, or if you sponsored someone who was challenging themselves. A very special mention of thanks to our gold, silver and bronze campaign sponsors. Thanks to you all, we surpassed our target.” Steve Bulmer, managing director of gold sponsor Biesse Group UK, adds: “We felt that it was important to support the Step 2 It campaign as a gold sponsor because it’s a fun way of getting people involved with the charity while raising money for this important cause. We wanted to be part of this campaign because not only are we corporate members, but we want to fully support the industry and help those working in it.” www.furnituremakers.org.uk

with these lower-priced, more temperate species substituting typically used softwood. “The growing Latvian volumes indicate the resilience and adaptability of our supply chain as new timber sources are found to satisfy demand. “As for more French and tropical imports, the increase in volumes is a more normal variance often seen in the first quarter. These trade links will prove crucial in the coming months. “While the joinery softwood market is likely to bear the brunt of the impact of the war in Ukraine, products such as Siberian Larch cladding and Birch plywood will also

become difficult to source as the existing stock begins to be depleted. “We are working with the market and our members to communicate to specifiers what alternative products will be available in the coming months. One great resource for this is our Timber Cladding Handbook. “The global network our members have built is set to become more important than ever as the timber industry looks to navigate an increasingly complex market.” The full range of Timber Development UK statistics can be accessed via the company’s website. www.ttf.co.uk/statistics

New chair of furniture industry’s All Party Parliamentary Group Mark Eastwood, Conservative MP for Dewsbury, has been appointed Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group (APPFIG). He takes over from Mike Wood, Conservative MP for Dudley South, who has led the Group since it was newly formed in 2020, following the December 2019 General Election. Mr Eastwood was appointed at the AGM of the APPFIG, along with several other elected officers: Rosie Cooper, Labour MP for East Lancashire; Mike Wood MP, Conservative MP for Dudley South; Greg Smith MP, MP for Buckingham; Paul Howell MP, MP for Sedgefield; Steve Baker MP, MP for Wycombe; Kim Leadbeater MP, MP for Batley and Spen; James Daly MP, MP for Bury North and Conservative Peer Baroness Warsi. “I am honoured and delighted to have been elected as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group,” comments Mr Eastwood. “Having worked in the industry for more than 15 years prior to my election as MP for Dewsbury in 2019, I am acutely aware of the big challenges the industry faces as we emerge from a global pandemic. “In my position of Chair, I will

champion the furniture and furnishings industry at the highest level of government, to help overcome these challenges and ensure that this vital sector for the UK economy continues to thrive.” Jonathan Hindle, chairman of the British Furniture Confederation (BFC), which sponsors the secretariat of the APPFIG, welcomed Mark’s appointment and paid tribute to the support from Mike Wood over the past couple of years: “Mike has done a fantastic job in raising the industry’s concerns and working with the BFC to ensure ministers and civil servants are aware of the key policy issues. This was required particularly during the Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020. “I’m equally delighted to welcome Mark to the role. With his background of working in the industry and a constituency with many manufacturers from our sector within it, he is particularly well placed to understand the challenges we face. As Vice-Chair of the Group, he has already proved his willingness to be pro-active on supporting the industry and I’m sure he will continue with even more enthusiasm to help us ensure the furniture industry’s voice is heard.”

SICAM returns for 2022 with inspiring line-up

Pordenone will host the 13th edition of SICAM between 18th21st October, promising a packed schedule full of inspiration for an international furniture industry that is increasingly lively and in constant search of innovation, stimuli and relationships. The exhibition complex’s 10 halls will all be occupied, and this year the exhibition space will be expanded thanks to an extension of Hall 8, which will make it possible to respond to a significant increase in demand for participation once again. “We are looking forward to a truly significant trade fair,” comments Carlo Giobbi, organiser of SICAM, “and this is also reflected in the fact that today, with still four months to go, we have a large waiting list of companies interested in exhibiting. “We have already confirmed the participation of the major players in every product sector, and this year we are also witnessing the return of major multinationals to the exhibition. I believe that the solid

participation of all these companies at SICAM 2022 is the best response that the components and accessories sector could give after the challenges and uncertainties of the last two years”. The same data recently communicated by Federlegno Arredo on the performance of the

national furniture industry makes it easy to understand the reason for this expectation for SICAM. The first quarter of the current year closed with a 24.5% increase in sales for the entire national furniture supply chain, compared to the same period in 2021, with the domestic market growing by 27.2%

and foreign sales up by 21%. This consolidates the results achieved in the record year of 2021 for the sector, which recorded a production turnover of 49 billion (of which 18 billion was exports), with exports seeing a significant recovery (up by 9.3% compared to 2019 for furniture-lighting and up by 7.3% for >>

the entire supply chain). This year, more than ever, SICAM will be a highly attractive prospect for designers and professionals in the international furniture industry. The interest registered at the various stages of the exhibition’s foreign promotion tour has been very telling in this sense. In the past few months, SICAM has been present at all the major global trade fairs: from KBB in Birmingham, England, to Fimma-Maderalia in Valencia, Spain, and Technomebel in Sofia, Bulgaria, as well as Interzum Bogotà in Colombia and the recent Indiawood in Bangalore, India. Next stops on the tour will be Formobile in São Paulo, Brazil, Fitecma in Buenos Aires and the IWF in Atlanta, USA. On the international market front, this year SICAM will also see the presence of designers, architects, buyers and journalists from all over the world, selected by the ICE Agency, which has been put in place on four continents. From the Americas, arrivals are expected from the US, Canada and Mexico;

expected from Africa are Kenya, Mozambique and South Africa; and then there is Australia and New Zealand, and the Caucasian Republics of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

A fundamental showcase, but also a gateway to new markets and customers. For SICAM, the expectation is to consolidate the 100-plus diverse origins of furniture professionals that have already

featured for years in Pordenone, and thereby guarantee the companies attending an extensive and qualified international visibility at the highest level. www.exposicam.it/en/

“For over 54 years, an enthusiastic team has been working daily on the future of the company and that of its customers” For over 54 years, an enthusiastic team has been working daily on the future of the company and that of its customers. While Robland is a key international player, its personal contacts remain incredibly important to the business. Robland never sells directly to end-consumers and, as such, its target audience is reached via dealers and importers. The company has good relations with many of its importers and dealers and has been collaborating with most of them for over 30 years. Robland even provides training for its distributors. The company keeps the original mission – to offer products with the best quality/ price ratio on the market – at the heart of all it does. This philosophy can be found in its exceptional design, production, sales, and customer support. Approximately 5% of the company’s budget is invested in developing new products and updating the existing program. Continuous improvement of production and quality leads to good products, built in state-ofthe-art manufacturing facilities, which then fulfil exacting customer requirements. www.robland.com

HOMAG’s intelliGuide system sets new standards in guided saw and drill operation

HOMAG is proud to claim that its intelliGuide operator assistance system is the first assistance system in the history of panel dividing and drilling technology to enable saw and drill machines to interactively respond to the operator. This means that the operator has full control over production processes whilst benefiting from faster operating procedures and significantly increased production efficiency. The intelligent and flexible system has a modular structure made up of many different components. Together, they convert the saw and drill machines into intelligent systems that react to the operator’s actions. The intelliGuide system allows the operator to work more quickly, easily, ergonomically and intuitively.

The machine’s benefits at a glance • Completely intuitive machine operation that leads to significantly shorter throughfeed times and increases the output • Systematic means of avoiding errors • Fast processes: operator and machine work in tandem • The operator can work without looking at the monitor • Fluid, ergonomic processes for efficient and focused work • Smooth change of operator possible at any time Classic, advanced and premium models offer different options and features HOMAG’s intelliGuide operator assistance system

is offered in three models with differing levels of assistance technology for varying demands. It starts with the basic model – the intelliGuide Classic system – and goes up to the intelliGuide Advanced and Premium systems. intelliGuide Classic efficiently guides the operator step-by-step via a 3D model on its monitor. The machine is intuitive to operate thanks to coloured LED signals which means that the operator rarely has to look at the monitor, facilitating efficient and focused wood processing. intelliGuide Advanced raises the interaction between humans and machines to a new level. With the addition of a camera system, the operator can respond to the handling instructions from the saw, while the saw reacts to the operator’s actions.

INSIGHT 31

intelliGuide Premium works with innovative laser projections. These support the operator with additional instructions directly on the workpieces or in the working area. All handling instructions and information are shown clearly and visibly in the range of vision for processing. This means that errors due to misunderstandings or lack of attention are almost completely excluded. Drilling and fitting insertion CNC machining centre operator assistance HOMAG’s Classic intelliGuide system is available as an optional extra on HOMAG’s DRILLTEQ D-500 vertical CNC processing centre. It is a standard feature on HOMAG’s new space saving DRILLTEQ V-310 vertical CNC processing centre. On these DRILLTEQ CNC processing centres, the intuitive intelliGuide system enhances workpiece and tool change handling to increase efficiency and ensure process reliability. Tools can be transferred from the tool management system ‘toolManager’ to the picker simply with a tap of a finger. The intelliGuide system then

indicates where the new tool should be placed in the tool changer. To further support the machine operator, the loading area of the DRILLTEQ V-310 is also equipped with the intelliGuide LED assistance system. Here, intelliGuide is linked to the control system and shows the workpiece sizes and the correct positioning for loading into the machine by illuminating the LED bars in the X and Y directions. Quick visual checks guide the operator to ensure the loading of the correct sized workpiece. The intelliGuide system also performs a plausibility check to measure the length and width of the workpiece. This makes sure that drill positions are accurate even if workpieces are presented slightly over or undersized. Operator guidance for HOMAG’s SAWTEQ panel dividing saws All three models of the system are available for the SAWTEQ B-300, B-400 and B-500 panel dividing saws with and without a lifting table, in the cutting lengths 3200, 3800, 4300 and

5600mm. HOMAG’s SAWTEQ B-130 and B-200 panel dividing saws can be equipped with the intelliGuide Classic operator assistance system. Intelligent machine operation and operator assistance Enthusing about the use of the intelliGuide system on HOMAG’s panel dividing saws following its launch, Jörg Hamburger, Product Manager for Panel Dividing, HOMAG says: “Up until now, the saw determined the production sequence, expecting certain actions from the machine operator. We wanted to reverse this relationship. Our saws should react intelligently to the operator and guide them through processing in an optimal way. intelliGuide embodies this approach in an implementation that is unbeatably effective and unique worldwide. “Thanks to continuous further developments, intelliGuide has also established itself as an optimal tool for training employees. It is simple and intuitive to operate, setting new standards in human-machine interaction.” For more information, visit www.homag.com and watch the intelliGuide product video. Who regulates the regulators? Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd, continues his series of exclusive articles for Furniture and Joinery Production ... The MCPD (Medium Combustion Plant Directive) came into effect in 2018 but still many local authorities – who are the regulators for the legislation – are neither aware nor implementing the regulations, says Chris. This month, we look at explaining and simplifying the regulations so that manufacturers of wood and wood-based products don’t end up falling foul of the law and facing closure and/ or prosecution. Let’s look at the need for a wood machining process permit first. If a company processes (purchases) more than 1,000m3 of wood or wood-based products, then they need a part B permit to carry out that process. This comes under guidance note PGN 602. The part B permit is granted by Environmental Health. Regulated by them, it covers all releases to atmosphere from a wood machining process. If a company only saws timber, then this is increased to 10,000m3 per year (sawmills). So, when did this come about? Well, part B permits have been around since 1990. For 32 years now you have needed a permit. If you have a part B permit, it will cover your dust extraction system as well as any wood burning appliance you may have at no extra cost. All sizes of wood-fired heaters need a permit or an exemption. There are no exceptions and no minimum size (unless on Crown Property). If you burn waste-wood on industrial premises, even if it is kiln-dried virgin timber, it is still classed as industrial waste and needs a permit or an exemption. The following table is taken from the MCPD and denotes burn rates and permit boundaries.

Ranheat is a leading producer of industrial wood-fired boilers and heaters and wood-waste management systems.

So, up to 50kgs per hour you need an exemption from the environment agency to burn waste wood. This can be done online and currently has no cost associated with it. Over 50 kgs/hour, you need a part B permit,

up to less than 90kgs per hour. The part B permit is for a SWIP (Small Waste Incineration Plant) – this is required if you do not process more than 1,000m3 of wood and wood-based products, so you don’t need a permit for a wood machining process. All plants up to this size still come under the clean air act. This is unless the system is claiming RHI payments, then the boiler must meet the stricter emission limits laid down by Ofgem. No wood burned may contain Halogenated Organic Compound of heavy metals (basically demolition or strip-out waste). In the early days of the RHI scheme, there were three bands of RHI tariff less than 200kW less than 1MW and over 1MW. Many woodworking companies installed 199 kW boilers without being informed by the supplier that a permit for a SWIP or a part B wood machining permit would be needed as 199kW is over the 189kW limit for needing a permit. Ofgem and the BSL are currently inspecting installations and those without permits and the other conditions in place are being taken off the RHI and have had payments stopped. If the boiler is on the RHI as 199kW output, you need the SWIP permit. So, what else do I need? All chimneys attached to an industrial Furnace (read wood burner) require planning consent or permitted development in writing. All chimneys need chimney height approval from Environmental Health. 01604 750005 sales@ranheat.com www.ranheat.com

CNC Machinery

How to reduce your CNC routing costs In the current climate of huge energy price rises (and more to come), trying to reduce costs is becoming more of a priority to every business. CNC World shares its expertise on the matter ...

CNC MACHINERY 37

Running a CNC machine uses a lot of energy. Before we look at ways to reduce those costs, we need to understand the different factors that influence the amount it costs to produce a part. Material prices Material costs can vary, often in relation to demand and availability, with freight costs playing a large part. Some grades of plywood are currently 100% more expensive to buy now than they were in January this year. Much of the UK’s stock of ply came from Russia, since stopping imports the demand on other producers has meant an unprecedented cost increase, although fluctuations aren’t normally so high. Machining time This is quite simply the time it takes to machine the part. There are many factors that come into play here, including how intricate the part is and if custom finishes are requested. Set-up costs These mainly come down to the person hours involved and include setting up the tools, getting the material on the bed in the right position and setting up the design file. Set-up time isn’t just at the start, it also includes the time part way through machining if a part needs to be manually turned.

How to reduce CNC router costs It’s not about cutting corners but instead thinking about the job at hand and asking yourself “do I need to do that this time?” Let us take a look at ways to reduce the costs: 1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

Add a radius to internal edges if it doesn’t have to be a sharp corner. This reduces machining time because you don’t have to change tools to achieve the internal corner. Only specify tolerances when necessary because tight tolerances mean additional machining time. If it’s not critical and hasn’t been specified on the technical drawing, the standard tolerances of 0.125mm or better will be sufficient. Consider the material; machining time is directly affected by the materials you’ve chosen to work with. a. There are different grades of materials; it’s not always necessary to use the highest quality for each job. b. Can you buy material in bulk and save with economies of scale? c. Some materials can be machined quicker than others. It may be that the material cost is higher, but the job is completed quicker and therefore costs are reduced. Simplify the set-up. Small design tweaks can make a big difference to the time the machine is running and the man power to support it. Make sure that whoever is designing the part is on board with reducing costs because they can have a big impact on the cost of the final part. Choosing the right tool for the job means that your CNC machine can run at its optimum speed for that particular material. This will reduce the amount of time the machine is running.

6.

7.

8.

9.

If you need to change tools on a job consider installing an automatic tool changer if you haven’t got one already. The finish … Engraving and embossing looks really good but it is additional time with the machine running. When working on a prototype do you need every detail? If it is the final part, there are cheaper ways such as painting post-cutting that can create amazing effects. As with most things, there are economies of scale. If you’re doing mass production work, your set-up costs per part will be smaller than if you are completing a oneoff job. The costs of a smaller one-off job can be reduced if two jobs can be fitted onto the router at the same time. Look after your tools. Clean them down, use the right tool for the job and always check a feeds and speeds calculator before starting a job. You will get the best finish on a job and reduce the likelihood of having to use additional tools.

“To reduce overall costs, keep your machining simple where you can,” says Jason Rowe, Managing Director, CNC World. “Remember, small design tweaks can make a big difference to the set-up time and the time the machine is running; the less running time, the less energy is being used as well as reduced man power. “And, importantly, when you do have intricate parts or engraving work to complete, make sure these costs are passed on to your customer.” Over 14,000 MultiCam CNC machines have been sold. To find out more about why they’ve become one of the most popular CNC machines, speak to their UK partner, CNC World. 01953 668899 info@cnc-world.co.uk www.cnc-world.co.uk

Reduce labour and increase productivity with a furniture part production cell For many sofa and chair frame manufacturers, the cutting-to-length and drilling of rails and corner blocks can be a time consuming, labour-intensive job. This is exacerbated when you consider that some rails require an angled cut on one or both ends, as well as the insertion of Tee Nuts into some parts. Therefore, in many cases, the production of these parts is spread out across the woodmill, requiring at least two or three operators, which is obviously a costly and inefficient way of working. As a result, Italian machinery manufacturer, the Comec Group – which specialises in equipment for furniture production – has introduced its ‘lean production cell’ philosophy, to help reduce labour and increase productivity. An example of how a working cell can be configured is as below.

“Given the way machines 1 and 2 operate, it is quite feasible that a single person (subject to production requirements) could operate any combination of two, maybe even three machines at the same time”

“Italian machinery manufacturer, the Comec Group – which specialises in equipment for furniture production – has introduced its ‘lean production cell’ philosophy, to help reduce labour and increase productivity”

Machine 1 – TAC 1 CNX 3000 This machine has been specifically designed for the cutting and drilling of rails and corner blocks. The maximum infeed length capacity is 3000mm and timber to be cut can be stacked in the vertical hopper feed loading system. Thereafter, the complete feeding, vertical drilling, cutting and ejection operation is fully automatic and the only intervention required by the operator is to reload the hopper once it

is empty. When cutting small pieces, such as corner blocks, it could take the hopper feed 20 minutes before it needs reloading, thus freeing the operator to perform other tasks within the production cell. As standard, the machine has CNC control to the feeding, drilling and cutting sequence, with the sawblade having the ability to automatically angle in the range of +/- 60 degrees.

Machine 2 – MD Classic or MD TOP CNC Work Centre Depending on the design and construction of the sofa / chair frames, some parts require additional machining operations such as horizontal drilling, shaping, compound angle cutting, or cut outs. These CNC working centres can be configured with point-to-point drilling groups, vertical and horizontal electro spindles, a C axis for angled cutting and an automatic vertical loading system. Thanks to the tandem loading / unloading sequence, the machine can also be comfortably operated by one person, who is also still able to run machine 1. Machine 3 – Rivet Tee Nut Insertion Machine Many parts used in the manufacture of sofa / chair frames need to have Tee Nuts inserted to aid in the assembly process. This is done on a simple stand-alone manual machine. Given the way machines 1 and 2 operate, it is quite feasible that a single person (subject to production requirements) could operate any combination of two, maybe even three machines at the same time. Of course, any of these three machines can easily be incorporated into existing production lines, and still achieve some significant increases in output. Reviewing Masterwood GB’s Open House

Masterwood GB recently celebrated its first Open House dates since moving to its new showroom, with a great turnout of new and existing customers across the four-day event. Customers had the chance to view a full range of Masterwood machines, including the new high-speed drilling FT600s and MS320 Beam saw which are manufactured by parent company, KDT Machinery. Throughout the four days, various demonstrations were run on the showroom machines to show off each machine’s capabilities. On the Pod and rail five-axis CNC, one that grabbed a lot of attention was a full window frame and sash using Whitehill profile blocks. “Although five-axis isn’t required for window production, we were able to show customers a speed and efficiency that can be achieved with a CNC machine to produce a complete window,” says Masterwood GB sales director, Dave Kennard.

47

A traditional box window, designed using the MasterWindow and MasterWorks software packages, was also run on the pod and rail CNC, fully machining a sill, head, and a pair of pulley jams in approximately 15 minutes; a fraction of the time that a skilled woodworker would require to do the same work. TF-600S drilling machine The new TF-600S drilling machine did not disappoint. Customers were impressed with its high-speed work rate and ability to work on all six faces of a panel, producing a cabinet panel containing 30 holes, in just 10 seconds. The machine uses twin grippers to securely clamp the panel, and an air blower table to allow quick and smooth movement in and out of the working area. These machines are standard with drill heads and routers above and below and higher levels can have the option of tool changing. MS-320 beam saw The long-awaited beam saw from Masterwood, in partnership with KDT, generated a lot of interest with the speed that panels could be cut from full size sheets and the quality of cut. The basic software allows panels sizes to be set and then to be optimised into sheet sizes to get the most efficient layouts with minimum waste. MW1225KS On the flat bed MW1225KS, a popular demo from the W18 exhibition, a dinosaur 3D jigsaw. The programs are created using Master3D software, and the design is nested together to

get the maximum number of components out of sheet material. The current showroom model is a four-axis version and allows the aggregate heads required for Lamello P-System joints to be used. Speedy II The compact drilling machine demonstrated a simple cabinet being fully machined and using the Lamello jointing system. The machine is currently available as an ex-demo model. Contact MWGB office for more information. The Speedy is proving to be a very popular model. With its main drilling facilities, plus the added six position tool changer, it makes the machine very versatile for “One Offs” or for use

with larger quantities of panels where in and out feed tables help. Masterwood GB would like to thank all companies and customers who attended the open house to see the machinery and software packages it has to offer, as well as Whitehill and Lamello for their presence at the open house. The Masterwood GB showroom is available for machine and software demos on a full range of products, at your convenience. Sanding Technology & Materials

MB Fentech automatic profile sander proves a winner for David Salisbury

It all started with the demand from wooden window manufacturers for a smart solution for sanding their piece-by-piece production. But many years of development, which have brought mechanical and program updates, have made ROBA Fentech from MB Maschinenbau an all-rounder that covers the entire spectrum for sanding profiles. Many Fentech machines have thus already been installed in companies that are only indirectly comparable with window production, but all applications have in common the task of facilitating “batch size one” production in the field of profile sanding. A high level of personnel has always been

necessary here, while the variety of parts is unmanageably large and at the same time the quantities decreased. A highly automated solution such as the ROBA Fentech from MB Maschinenbau is required. Time-consuming adjustment of the Fentech is no longer necessary, which is made possible by the scanner-based parts recognition at the machine inlet and the subsequent axis-controlled adjustment of the sanding units. All professional cross-sections are recognised and implemented in a corresponding sanding program for four-sided processing.

55

The part scanning calculates the workpiece geometry and informs the units of the position to be approached in fractions of a second. When all units are in their position, the workpiece is released and sent through the machine. Extra-large sanding tools with a diameter of 400mm ensure a maximised contact surface with the workpiece, and jump control of the sanding heads ensures gentle short edge sanding and extends the service life of the abrasives. All sanding units have an oscillation stroke optimised by the PLC. Taking into account the height and width of the part, the stroke is always driven in such a way that the abrasives are always completely used. Another novelty is the vacuum transport system, which makes it possible to send all imaginable parts through the machine. Even short parts that could not previously be integrated into the sanding process do not pose a problem. This type of transport system makes it possible to dispense with any side stops and top pressure rollers, which considerably simplifies operation. The operator has the option of operating the machine as a through feed machine or activating a reversal of the workpieces in the machining program. In this case, the workpieces are sent through the machine for sanding at approx. 20 m/min and then returned to the operator in rapid traverse. One-man operation is therefore possible at any time.

Parts that require intensive sanding can even be sanded a second time in the return. Higher volume of common shaped parts can be achieved by switching off the scanner. The ROBA Fentech has now found a new customer in England, where it was recently successfully installed at David Salisbury. David Salisbury designs and manufactures quality conservatories and garden rooms which have

won many awards and are always custom built. Customer demand for exclusivity and quality make the task difficult, but highly interesting. Each conservatory is unique and therefore the individual parts are always project-related and never comparable. A typical “batch size one” production for David Salisbury, but also for the newly acquired ROBA Fentech profile sanding machine. The challenge here was to cover the profile variance from the glass profile to the profiles of the roof construction. Profile cross-sections from 10x10mm to 240x80mm, in the smallest quantities of one to a maximum of 10 identical profiles, sometimes up to 6m long, but also only 240mm short, must be sanded without any setup effort. After a long market analysis, David Salisbury decided that the exceptional qualities of the ROBA Fentech were best suited to meeting its exacting requirements. Now, once installed, just one person can sand batches of parts with wildly different profiles in a fraction of the time it used to take. All parts are sanded with consistent quality, which was a serious weakness in previous manual process. During commissioning, David Salisbury explored the requirements for the ROBA Fentech to the limit, but was able to determine that the ingenious “batch size one” principle of the machine, based on many design and programming details, is hard to rival. A profile sander that only has to be loaded and unloaded with parts, with the technology built into the machine scanner and setting deals with every profile, proved a winning concept. www.john-penny.co.uk www.mb-maschinenbau.de/en/

56

Perfect fit After winning a substantial contract for some rather spellbinding cabinetry, Damian Cronin Ltd needed to up the ante of its sanding capability to deliver the desired quality and consistency. John Legg ventured north to see how they were getting on. Based in Newcastle, Damian Cronin Ltd is a successful furniture, joinery and shop fittings manufacturer with a clear focus on achieving high standards of workmanship for its clients whose international reach sees their products installed all over the world. John Legg visited to take a look at its latest, unique investment to see what difference it makes to their busy operation.

Located on a fairly typical small industrial estate in Benton, on the northern fringe of Newcastle, the production area of Damian Cronin is a busy and energetic space with a lot of technology packed into a fairly tight but still workable space. At the time of my visit, the company was working hard creating various elements for a demanding order for one of its international clients, comprising a wide range

of units in differing formats using both plain and oak veneered MDF with painted/lacquered finishes for high-profile retail applications in Japan. Among the various CNC machinery, edgebander and classical back-up, a very smart looking sander took pride of place – a Kündig Perfect-2 1350 REd-L Bs sander to give it its full title, the first of its kind in the UK!

SANDING TECHNOLOGY & MATERIALS 57

And what a hit it’s quickly turning out to be for the whole company – by transforming a key issue within the company’s production process, a considerable amount of restorative post-sanding work has been almost entirely alleviated in one stroke. After six months’ more than proving its value, Damian Cronin’s new Perfect sander, is just that really, perfect – the ideal sanding solution for what was a critical production issue for the business. The company’s decision to purchase the machine came to pass primarily because of an ongoing contract with a major entertainment business and one of their key projects. The management team assessed options from a number of well-known suppliers, but the Kündig option, although more expensive, was undoubtedly the stand out choice. A key part of its advantage was the Perfect’s pivoting, oblique sanding head which creates a superior finish, time after time, producing considerably finer surfaces and less sanding traces when

compared to the standard parallel sanding method. Of course this is especially important when the requirement is to create surfaces ready for lacquer applications. Kündig’s Perfect-2 1350 REd-L Bs as specified for Damian Cronin is suitable for sanding solid wood, veneers, lacquer and is also equipped with a structure brush to generate a textured surface. Behind the sleek, modern design lies a multitude of innovations in sanding technology, which in combination, help this machine stand apart from everyday options in terms of ultimate surface quality. The control unit, which has been developed from scratch, makes sanding even easier and more intuitive. All the models are suitable for integration into any relevant control system and are therefore fully capable of Industry 4.0. Of course, the Perfect is completely modular and can be equipped with a large selection of sanding units and options. The machine’s key features include: fast feed

speeds, options and customisation possibilities; an advanced yet easy-to-operate control unit; the possibility of belt/work piece cleaning without the use of compressed air; automatic pressure control for segmented pad; electronic grain adjustment and stock removal distribution between contact rollers; and pattern sanding >> using the cross belt.

“We all love the new sander,” he said, “Of all the equipment in the machine shop, the Kündig is just amazing. It does what it is meant to do every time and it’s just so straightforward to operate” Stephen Ross

58 SANDING TECHNOLOGY & MATERIALS

Talking to Stephen Ross from the company’s production team, the positive adoption of the machine stems not only from the innate quality of the machine build and its amazing finishing capability, but importantly, from the user-friendly nature of the control interface. “We all love the new sander,” he said, “Of all the equipment in the machine shop, the Kündig is just amazing. It does what it is meant to do every time and it’s just so straightforward to operate. “We’ve had it now for about six months and we needed less than a day’s instruction to get to grips with it – Kündig has done a great job designing such a brilliant machine with outstanding capabilities, whilst thinking of the operator and making it incredibly dependable and very user-friendly.

Stephen says the team really appreciates the difference the new Kündig makes to the finish of the products – and the almost complete lack of refinishing required is a real boon

“For us, this machine is a bit of a game-changer actually in so far as we used to spend a fair bit of time sorting out minor imperfections in the finished surface. This was tedious to do, and wasted considerable time and money.” Focusing on the user-friendly nature, whether using Manual operation using just three convenient control elements, or in Comfort mode using its Enormatic function, all Kündig sanders can be easily, reliably and very

In addition to the easy-to-operate control panel, Stephen demonstrated the ease of changing the sanding belts – it took longer to fetch the belt from the storage rack than to actually change it …

comfortably operated – workpiece thickness measuring and starting of the sanding process is automatically executed. In Touch operation, all settings, for example the choice of sanding units, feed and sanding belt speed etc, can be selected on the touch-screen and saved as programmes for future use. Another important factor that the company has come to realise in recent months is that even though the company enjoys a good reputation locally and further afield, Damian Cronin is increasingly building awareness among a number of leading architects and designers across the country. These customers naturally have incredibly high standards so it follows that they need to partner with companies that can operate reliably at that level. With the use of quality materials to begin with, allied to premium quality technology to process it, Damian Cronin is rightly catching the eye of this lucrative and connected community. Accounts manager, Wendy Cronin, summarises the effect that the company’s new sander is having on the business: “It’s two-fold,” she says, “when we look out onto the production floor and don’t see our bench joiners using hand sanders for long periods of time, it makes us all happy. There is less dust in the work shop, less vibration from using hand tools and we are not wasting time and company money. “Secondly, we are definitely attracting more designer and architect clients. Our skill base, coupled with investment in top technology such as our new Kundig Sander, means we have the capability to deliver the highest quality for our clients – who rely on us getting a perfect finish every time. Our ongoing investment is leading to more interest from architects and designers.” 0845 833 0565 www.kundig.com

80 years’ perfection in sanding solutions Boere’s history begins with Grandpa Boere, who started his workshop in June 1942 as an escape from forced labour in the German war industry. The company was focused on sanding and, 80 years later, has retained this focus, priding itself on its expertise in creating solutions capable of sanding any material to pefection.

Boere believes that its knowledge about sanding will make the difference, that its customers “do not need machines, they need results”. The knowledge the company has gathered throughout the years has been diligently preserved and passed on through the generations, down to the current third generation of Boeres.

80 YEARS

Though a family business, Boere prides itself on sharing its knowledge with customers, and indeed anyone who represents Boere. Its customers in the UK can

schools for woodworking use Boere sanders. The company teaches and repeatedly train the teachers and the students. In a world in which craftsmanship is a rare commodity,

Saws, Blades & Cutting Technology

Freud’s LSB X: impeccable finishing without compromises

LSB X circular saw blades are available in a wide range of diameters

Precise, long-lasting and reliable, the topselling Freud circular saw blades for industrial panel sizing have it all. The LSB X design not only delivers an exceptional performance but offers exceptional value for money, for furniture makers and panel manufacturers. An ever-growing number of customers is choosing Freud LSB X to boost their production and optimise efficiency, without compromising on quality. Let’s take a closer look at the unique features that make the LSB X so valuable. Freud, a worldwide leader in the cutting tool industry and one of the biggest manufacturers of circular saw blades, has always paid great attention to the performance of its tools. For this reason, since 1980, the Italian brand has been producing the so-called TiCo Carbide in-house: a special mixture of Titanium and Cobalt Carbide at the basis of the teeth which brings about superior quality. This formula allows maximum cutting precision and ensures a longer lifetime for the product. Exceptional Freud’s Anti-Vibration slots

Freud’s LSB X range is dedicated to industrial panel sizing applications

Besides the finest raw materials, an innovative tooth feature secures extended durability. The exceptional Super Square Tooth design has been engineered to perform perfect cuts and, with the opportunity to resharpen up to 25 times, it provides an excellent, cost-saving solution. To ensure a clean cut, the resistance performed by the blade teeth plays a key role too. Freud’s Tri-Metal Brazing technology – a copper alloy sandwiched between layers of silver alloy – bonds the TiCo Carbide tips to the steel blade body, granting extra flexibility and super impact resistance. Freud’s expertise concerns the blade body as well. To limit pitch build-up, as well as excessive heat during the working process, all LSB X are equipped with the industry-first Silver I.C.E. Coating. This superior protection improves chip ejection and maintains a low blade temperature. The reduced friction results in an extended lifetime for the tool. Freud has always believed in constant

investments in R&D, and this is precisely how the tensioning ring technology was developed. A special ring on the blade surface helps the tool remain flat and, consequently, enhances cutting precision and overall saw blade performance. Last but not least, Freud’s Anti-Vibration solution represents a winning feature that significantly reduces noise levels during cutting phases. Special body slots, laser cut and filled with thermoplastic polyurethane, considerably minimises the LSB X vibrations, securing low noise and perfect finishing. The good news is that Freud’s best-in-class blades are available in various diameters, ranging from 250 to 720mm, and are suitable for different application materials, including wood, chipboard, MDF, HPL and Plexiglas. The range is also compatible with the panel sizing machines of the most popular brands. For more information on the LSB X range and on Freud’s entire product offer, visit www. freudtools.co.uk

Safe woodworking needs safe machinery The attractiveness of wood has a lot to do with its market price when compared with other materials. Therefore, efficient and cost-effective manufacturing is required. With processing techniques from Hoffmann, this objective can be easily achieved. When it comes to frames, cassettes and architraves, the focus is on the classic mitre joint, which is secured with the highly structural and durable connecting element – “The Hoffmann Key”. For safe woodworking you also need “safe” machinery. This means maximum security for the operator of the machine and safe design for the future. The Hoffmann MS-35 and MS-35-SF ensure safe working.

MS 40-SF

Process The work-piece is laid on the table and positioned for cutting. The start button is pressed to begin the machine cycle and the profile is clamped. Both saw units cycle from above to make the mitre cuts. The parts remain clamped whilst the tables open to allow the router units to rout one or two dovetail slots for jointing with Hoffmann Keys, sizes W-1/2/3. The machine tables close and the finished work-piece is removed. The next machine cycle begins. The machine safety guard closes automatically after starting the processing cycle and re-opens when complete. A Clear vision panel retains the dust and scrap end, for

MS 35-SF

better operator comfort. A Fence stop system is also available for longer profiles up to 4000mm. It can be used solely as a double mitre saw, to cut to length profiles such as glazing beads, cornices and plinths in wood, aluminium, and plastic at 45° angles, and it can also be integrated with a cross-cut saw to make the square cut and control the length. Further special improvements have been made to the double mitre combination machine, MS 35-SF. The Hoffmann design team developed technology which reduced the vibrations created on the saw blades. This resulted in an increase in the precision and accuracy of both mitre cuts so that no further work was required prior to joining. This uncompromising accuracy is particularly important when the finished surface joint is visible. A high-quality cut, as well as high quality routing, is achieved by almost vibration-free running of the machine, the body of which is extremely robust and weighs about 700kg. A chip breaker provides a chip-free cut. Another feature is the extremely low noise level which is immediately noticeable. The range has now evolved to include the MS40-SF. With a larger saw blade (400mm), the cutting width increases to 105mm and a new waste ejector automatically removes off cuts at the front of the unit. Automatic router positioning is also available via NC axis and touch screen adjustment. “We currently use the Hoffmann MS35-SF to produce glazing bead cassettes for our fire doors and glazed screens,” comments Mitch

Johnson, branch manager, Door and Joinery Solutions. “Using the Hoffmann jointing system not only improves the process by simplifying it, but it has also increased the quality of the finished joint and the speed at which it is produced. “Because the joints are so accurate and secure, there is less filling required on the joints before spraying and the cassettes can be lacquered before fitting into the door. Production of the vision panel has increased by roughly 20% since having the Hoffmann machinery installed.” Tim Doran, MD of Ahmarra Door Solutions, adds: “Over the many years of manufacturing, many of our machines have required replacing and updating as expected, but the Hoffmann MS 35SF has continued to manufacture a precision product with only routine maintenance required, and we see no reason to replace it in the near future. “This combination machine not only cuts the perfect mitres but simultaneously routers the dovetail slots for the Hoffmann Keys. Ahmarra have a long relationship with Hoffmann, and our current Hoffmann MS 35-SF has been in operation for over 20 years, and still performs with the expected accuracy and precision that it did the day it was installed.” 01524 841500 info@hoffmann-uk.com www.hoffmann-uk.com

The Elcon range of vertical panel saws

Over 35 panel saws available from Daltons Wadkin Daltons Wadkin offers one of the most diverse and comprehensive ranges of panel saws in the UK. Partnering with leading European manufacturers including Altendorf, Elcon and SCM, the company boasts over 35 different models, including sliding table panel saws, vertical panel saws and beam saws. When space is at a premium, a vertical panel saw can be the ideal solution. The Elcon range of wall saws is ideally suited for operations where a compact, safe and accurate panel saw is required. Machines cater for all standard (and non-standard) panel sizes, with cutting depths from 55 to 150mm. Options such as doublecut scoring and electronic digital readouts guarantees clean, precision cutting. For maximum versatility, the traditional dimension saw, or sliding table panel saw, has

become the cornerstone for many workshops. SCM and Altendorf are key players in the market, with a wide range of machines available. The fundamentals remain the same, with a simple choice of blade diameter, sliding table length and rip fence capacity, but CNC technology now plays a greater role. For fast and efficient volume processing of panels, a beam saw is the ideal option. SCM’s Gabbiani range is ideal for businesses looking for beam saw automation cutting single or multiple panels. For uninterrupted production, rear and side loading panel feeding options keep the machine continually fed. Putting The Big in Striebig Standing at over three metres high, Omnia CS Ltd (Omnia) is the proud owner of the UK’s tallest Striebig vertical panel saw. Capable of cutting panels up to 2700 x 6100mm, this purpose-built Striebig Evolution has been designed to make light work of cutting composite materials and thermoplastic sandwich panels to size. “For over 15 years, we’ve been manufacturing and distributing lightweight, sustainable composite materials and thermoplastic sandwich panels in the UK,” says Les Meader, MD of Omnia. “An essential part of our production process is cutting large sheets to size, but it’s always been a slow and laborious process for us. “Due to the sheet sizes we were working with and the available space in our workshop, we were having to lay each panel on a flat surface or floor, manually measure each panel and use a chop saw and guiderail to cut each panel to the correct size. We knew this wasn’t an efficient way of working and, with orders increasing, we knew a vertical panel saw could improve productivity, reduce errors and de-skill the cutting process.”

“Striebig were able to build a saw especially for us that was capable of cutting sheets up to 2700mm and 80mm deep and deliver it to our new 8,000m2 premises in Nottingham within seven weeks” Omnia’s requirements were clear. “We needed a saw with a relatively small footprint but that could still cut composite panels up to 2700 x 6100mm, as well as standard 8x4 MDF sheets and 1.5mm thick aluminium sheets. It also needed to offer simple operation, guarantee accuracy with every cut and offer a high level of operator safety,” explains Les. “We spoke to three companies, but it was only TM Machinery that were able to fulfil our requirements. They knew their product range inside out and back to front and were able to work with us to find the right machine for our business. They told us the tallest standard Evolution saw was able to cut 2240mm, but Striebig were able to build a saw especially for us that was capable of cutting sheets up to 2700mm and 80mm deep and deliver it to our new 8,000m2 premises in Nottingham within seven weeks. It was this level of flexibility that was simply not available through any other manufacturer.” Designed to simplify the cutting of panels and reduce handling, the Evolution came equipped with a wide range of standard features, including an easy-to-use 12” touch screen operating system, 5,5 kW motor, automatic locking, swivelling, plunging and withdrawal of the saw unit and support rollers for a one-man cutting operation – a necessity for Omnia, whose panels can weigh upwards of 105kg. It was also built to order with manual and digital measuring stops to provide a cutting accuracy of 0.1mm. Following the smooth installation of the Evolution and completion of staff training, the

vertical panel saw was quick to prove its worth. Les says, “The results were immediate. A job that would have taken two people a week to complete can now be completed in a single afternoon. Whilst we still need two people to lift larger sheets onto the saw, cutting a sheet to size is a one-person job, allowing us to save on labour costs and significantly reduce material handling. “We’ve also been able to utilise the machine’s 80mm cutting depth and cut multiple sheets on the saw at one time, reducing production time and increasing efficiencies. In turn, this has allowed us to fulfil larger orders and still offer a competitive lead time.” It’s also opened new doors for the Nottinghambased company. “We’re looking at offering a cutting service to local businesses to maximise our yield. This wouldn’t have been possible without our Striebig.” Les adds, “We are on target to double our turnover this year. Whilst this isn’t all down to the introduction of the vertical panel saw, it’s certainly played its part. Thanks to the speed and accuracy of the Striebig, we are able to maintain a continual workflow and not have a build-up of sheets needing to be cut at one given time. This had reduced our risk of error, reduced material waste and has resulted in greater efficiencies across the workshop. Best of all, no one is required to work on their hands and knees to complete what is essentially a simple task, made complex by not having the right tools. We couldn’t recommend TM Machinery and Striebig more highly.” www.tmmachinery.co.uk

Lathams adds Transformad®’s high-tech Tmatt and Crystal collections to its catalogue

Tmatt in Terracotta & Lignite

James Latham Ltd (Lathams), one of the UK’s leading independent distributors of decorative products and materials, has announced the addition of premium surfacing brand Transformad®’s latest, high-tech surfacing ranges Tmatt and Crystal, to its collection. Responding to an increasingly popular design preference for visually striking, sensuous, tactile and hard-wearing surfaces, Tmatt is a silky-textured surface with an ultra-matt finish, while Crystal is notable for its high-gloss, highly durable finish. Manufactured using the highest-quality MDF core and the very latest in surfacing technology, Tmatt and Crystal embody high-performance meets style. They are resistant to scratching, abrasion, moisture, and heavy impact. Designed to be used in demanding interior environments, such as kitchens, bathrooms, walls, ceilings or even furniture, they can withstand heavy use whilst retaining their aesthetic appeal. “Transformad is one of the world’s most forward-thinking materials manufacturers, and

Tmatt in Artico

these surfaces directly respond to a number of new design trends coming to the fore, particularly the desire to balance looks with longevity, and strength with sustainability,” comments Paul Morson, group melamine product manager. “We have a reputation for bringing the very

latest premium, and innovative, architectural products onto the market. When we first saw Tmatt and Crystal, we instantly knew we wanted to be the first to offer UK specifiers unfettered access to these high-performance surfaces.” Transformad’s Nicolás Villaverde adds: “Working with partners whose initiatives align

with our own is very important to us, and Latham’s dedication to innovative materials and sustainable design made them a natural choice to launch Tmatt and Crystal in the UK. “We look forward to collaborating with them to promote these high-tech surfaces, distributing them without disruption to construction and design professionals nationwide.” Furthermore, the introduction of these two unique products – exclusive to Lathams in the UK – form part of the distributor’s wider Summer 2022 Decors Campaign, which will showcase its extensive stock range of over 1400 brands, styles, textures and colours. Sensuousness on the surface Aesthetically, Tmatt is a new collection of lacquered supermatt surfaces, which achieves a delicate-looking surface that surpasses initial perceptions. Pleasant to the touch, it’s also completely smooth, with a silken texture. Produced in a range of on-trend colours, such as Smeraldo green, Terracotta red and a dark, inky blue as well as subtler white, grey, beige and black, the Tmatt range embodies understated elegance with a signature softness and warmth. Warm woodgrains in Legno Fumè, Toscano and Elba have also been incorporated into the collection, responding to a growing 2022 trend for natural timber finishes. Dialling-up the gloss factor to 11, Crystal also has a wide range of attractive finishes, from solid colours to faithful representations of Concrete and Bronze. The bright, clear definition of the collection’s

highly-reflective finish makes it easily distinguishable from other, similar products. The maximum degree of gloss, achieved with a UV lacquer coating, gives it a light, clean and contemporary feel. This treatment also gives the surface essential hardness, important for maintaining its visual appeal in physically demanding environments. The union of technology and nature Easy to work, Tmatt and Crystal are perfect for a wide variety of surfacing applications from kitchen doors to bathroom splashbacks, and even interior cladding and furnishing. Possessing superior performance qualities, both surfaces are manufactured using the latest material finishing technology to confound initial functionality expectations. Highly resistant to staining and scratching,

properties across both ranges include: antifingerprint treatment, high durability and abrasion resistance. Tmatt even possesses the ability to thermal-heal surface micro-scratches to maintain a consistently flawless finish, day-inday-out. Both surfaces are hygienic, safe and easy to maintain. Perfect for residential and commercial interiors, they are CARB2 certified, meeting the current emission standards set by CARB. Tmatt and Crystal are Lathams-exclusive in the UK, available in panel sizes of 2850 x 1220 x 18mm, as well as a wide variety of colours and tones to suit almost any design brief. RENOLIT unveils its Colour Road for 22/23 RENOLIT SE, international manufacturer of high-quality plastic films and products, has unveiled its trend colours for 22/23 for the interior sector. This year’s Colour Road is themed “Travelling into new dimensions” and is inspired by the colour worlds of the deep sea, the firsthand sensory impressions on earth and images of outer space and space travel. Since 2009, RENOLIT’s corporate design management has been

publishing the latest colour and design trends in the annual Colour Road, addressing global trends and developments and transferring them to interior and exterior design. In-house concept for colour consulting The Colour Road gives manufacturers of furniture, floors, doors, wall panels and caravans an inspiring guideline as to which colours and materials

will be in vogue. “The core of our consultancy service is personal – or digital – consulting,” explains Verena Mundle, corporate design manager. “In addition to advice, videos and a digital brochure take designers and product managers on a journey.” Monika Haag and her colleagues filtered the motto “Travelling into new dimensions” from current affairs, with the pandemic bringing our deeply rooted need to travel into sharper focus.

The blue-green colour world provides calm and clarity In search of inspiration, the Colour Road leads down into the unexplored creatures and secrets of the deep sea. The trend colours of “Deep Ocean Level” are two blue tones – Sea Pioneer and Atlantic – an intense pastel green, Nekton, and Space Glow as a golden accent. “In interiors, blue and blue-green harmonise very well with our oak decors in a subtle light and grey

79

look,” says Monika Haag. “But stone looks, too, are a great option.” Bold shades stand for joy and a positive attitude to life At eye level, the hues of “Ground Level” emerge. Inspired by lichen on mossy rocks or tree trunks, Lichen Green is a muted, calming shade, with a distinct proportion of grey and yellow. The rich, warmly vibrant Pilgrim Shell also can be found in nature, its cheerful yellow shade conveying a positive aura. Artist is a powerful red shade, while its cooling counterpart is Sphere – a shade of blue, with a

tendency towards violet, which picks up on the virtual component of travel. “These fresh, encouraging colours simply radiate a good mood in the living room,” advises the colour expert from RENOLIT SE. “They work excellently in combination with oak decors as well as ceramics and tile patterns.” Exciting contrasts for a lively spatial effect The colours of “Cosmos Level” are souvenirs of an interplanetary journey. The bold orange shade, Mars, picks up on the hopes and perspectives of space travel and

directs our gaze towards our neighbouring planet. The muted rust-red shade, Crypto, could also come from a snapshot of the Martian atmosphere. Mars and Crypto are both of mineral origin – as is Mineral Grey, which is reminiscent of the dusty surfaces of the moon. This shade of grey provides the perfect base for bold accent colours – such as the fresh Caldera. The striking turquoise complements oak decors perfectly and, like orange, is suitable as an expressive, almost luminous contrast colour for minimalist design.

“Caldera, Mars and Crypto are a perfect match for the look of rough untreated woods and raw stone surfaces,” explains Verena. “In these two areas, RENOLIT offers a wide range of high-quality decors in various qualities. For RENOLIT’s trend video, visit www.renolit.com/en/company/ trendservice-colour-road, and for more information on the trend colours, the trend collages – including explanatory YouTube videos and the Colour Road brochure – are available for download. www.renolit.com/colourroadonline-presentation

Deeper damage on chipboard or floors is usually fixed with hard wax which is melted with an electric melter and filled into the hole in the chipboard. All products – touch-up sticks, soft and hard

wax – are available at Ostermann as single items in more than 100 different colours. Yet, given this diversity, how do you find exactly the colour you need? A sample chain helps to find the right colour The answer is Ostermann’s sample chain. It comprises all available colours at a glance, so that you can hold it against the damaged furniture and compare. The samples are finished with the original lacquer of the edging touch-up sticks, and the range also includes soft wax and hard wax of the same colours. Carpenters/ cabinet makers will find the sample chain on the Ostermann website www. ostermann.eu, by typing in the search term “sample chain”.

Do you know the name of your board? If you want to mend a specific board decor, you will find the corresponding material even faster. Just type in the board name or the board number into the search field on the online shop and all items available for the board will be displayed. That includes, of course, the repair materials. Tips and tricks for surface correction If you would like to look up exactly which product you need for which kind of damage or, for example, how to melt hard wax and repair deeper damage, take a look at the “Expert Advice” sector on the Ostermann website. Besides many other tips and tricks, you will also find useful information on repairing damage in wood surfaces. www.ostermann.eu

Tekform Slimline Tacto drawers incorporate runners with an integrated Tacto activator that ensures effortless touch opening. All components remain the same as the standard version, as do drilling and fixing positions. This makes it easy to update and enhance existing designs to offer convenient and reliable opening of drawers with handleless fronts. The simple and precise installation is further supported by a non-handed Tacto mechanism that is intuitively placed into the correct position without the need for predrilling. Drawers are fast and easy to assemble, thanks to the EasyFix locking system used for the front-panel connector, which requires only hand insertion and a quarter of a turn with a screwdriver to lock the panel securely in place.

Titus Tekform Simline Tacto – inside out

Reliable life-long ‘ConfidentClose’ soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned TITUS singledirection precision engineered hydraulic dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement of the drawer as it reaches the closed position, but offer minimal resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened. Installation of the drawers within the cabinet is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to ± 1 mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable. uk.titusplus.com

AMS – the home of planer moulders, grinders & woodworking machinery training courses As specialists in supplying and supporting multisided planers and moulders to the woodworking industry for decades, it makes sense to contact Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) when you are looking to purchase a new moulder or grinder. The Wadkin heritage at AMS ensures that you will receive the best of advice from their highly experienced sales and service staff. Most of the staff are ex-Wadkin employees and have been working with planer moulders and grinders all their careers.

AMS’ state-of-the-art showroom in Leicestershire houses five models of the Wadkin Bursgreen planer moulder range, from four- to six-head models, all of which can be demonstrated using the customer’s own materials. Planer moulders are hugely popular in the joinery, furniture, sawmill and timber merchant sectors. Hardwood and softwood mouldings can be produced with a very high quality of finish at varying feed speeds. A popular addition to the range is the Easy-Set system which controls the near side and top heads/feedworks from a touch screen, reducing set-up time and saving money. The heavy-duty cast-iron body of the machine absorbs any vibration and ensures a top-class finish and longer tool life. AMS has four-, five- and six-head standard and easy set planer moulders in stock in its Leicestershire showroom but, if you need a specialist model, then the company can customise it for you and produce a planer moulder specifically for your workshop. Whether it is planed square edge material or

a complex joinery profile, the Wadkin Bursgreen range of planer moulders will suit your budget and specification. When it comes to grinders, Wadkin Bursgreen has added an auto-straight knife grinder, a profile & straight knife combination grinder and a circular saw grinder to its range. Bespoke demonstrations can be organised for the customer to see their own products being produced and cutters ground from scratch. Another update from AMS is the recent opening of the Wadkin Bursgreen Academy, where the company offers woodworking machinery training courses across the UK. Some of the most popular training courses are the general woodworking machinery training courses, train the trainer and novice training courses. If you need training certification for you or your employees, you can contact AMS (training@ advancedmachinery.co.uk) and you’ll receive a quotation in 24 hours. Søren Lund Furniture digitises cutting room with Zünd Søren Lund Furniture has been known for its proud traditions of quality craftsmanship, flexibility, and the finest materials – presented in both new and classic designs – since 1963. In this resepect, not much has changed in the furniture factory since the 60s. The focus is still on solid craftsmanship, created by local professionals. Situated east of Randers in Denmark, Søren Lund Furniture’s primary market is Denmark, but it also sells to Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Australia, and the USA. The company produces couches and armchairs, with couches making up the majority of the production. All couches are handproduced to order in the Randers factory, with customers able to choose from many models, selecting the size, pattern, color, and design details. The perfect cutting solution for leather and textiles When you enter the company’s production area, the first thing you meet is the Zünd Cutter G3

2XL-3200. This digital flatbed cutting solution is equipped with an Over Cutter Camera (OCC) and a cradle feeder for fabric rolls. The cradle feeder with edge control ensures tension free feeding of flexible, stretchy textiles onto the cutter. A cutter extension allows the operator to pick the cut parts while the machine is cutting the next sequence. The large cutting area of 2740 x 3200mm gives space for big leather hides. High expectations for the cutter Better utilisation of materials, reduction of the production time by half, and physical relief of employees: these were the expectations for the cutter when the company purchasedt it – and these objectives are well on their way to being fulfilled. “With the savings on manual labor and materials, the cutter will pay itself home in a matter of years, and with a lifespan of 15+ years, the purchase is very profitable for Søren Lund Furniture,” explains head of production, Lotte Brath. “Previously, workers could manually cut up to three couches in one day. This number significantly increased with the Zünd G3 Cutter.” Using the Over Cutter Camera (OCC) and MindCUT software from Zünd, the leather hides are captured and the pre-marked defects are automatically detected. The operator then selects the model to be cut, and in a matter of seconds, MindCUT has nested the parts the most efficient way on the hide. The operator is also able to nest parts from multiple models on the same leather hide. This optimises the utilisation of the leather hides by up to 20%. With many hundreds of hides to be cut on an annual basis, the savings become significant. It has also made a difference in terms of relieving employees from physical overload. The conveyor function of the extension table pulls the heavy leather hide up on the table, and the employees avoid lifts and stressful working positions. The Zünd Cutter reduces personnel resources Where many other furniture companies have moved production out of the country, Søren Lund Furniture takes great pride in keeping it in Denmark, using Danish subcontractors and hiring locally. In the past, finding workers for production was no problem, but today young people are seemingly less interested in the manual production processes within the furniture industry. Once found, it can take several years

for them to master the craft sufficiently. So, for Søren Lund Furniture, the manual cutting process was becoming a serious bottleneck. A person who cuts manually by hand must know each model and template to figure out how best to utilise the material. However, a cutter operator can simply select a model and let the machine handle the rest. With a minimum of training, everyone can learn to operate the cutter, making it very flexible. Digitisation and backup of cutting templates Formerly, cardboard templates used to cut furniture manually were indispensable. However, they are vulnerable to fire and theft, so there were considerable benefits in this regard to switching to a Zünd Cutter. As part of the transition from manual to automatic cutting, the templates have been digitised. For this, a Photo Digitiser from Zünd has been used. The software automatically generates a cutting curve from a photo of the template. The moment they are digitised, they are available for the Cutter and can be secured for future use. High quality, proximity, and support were essential “Zünd managed to meet our requirements by presenting a convincing and high-quality complete solution for leather and textile, combined in one Cutter,” explains Lotte. “Also, we were able to test the cutter in Zünd’s Danish demo center in Odder, and experience for ourselves how it worked with the materials we use. Together with Zünd, we chose a hard- and software solution that suits our current needs and at the same time allows for an increase in capacity. “In case our cutting needs increase significantly, the machine can be upgraded with an extra cutter extension or an ‘offline nesting’ for increased productivity. So we are ready for the challenges of the future.” www.zund.com

Five tips to streamline your engineering department

Your engineering department plays a vital role in ensuring your production runs smoothly. Here, acclaimed software provider, Microvellum, suggests five tips that will help you improve the efficiencies of your designers, engineers and drafters ... Take the time to make it right As an engineer, you are constantly watching the clock and responding to change requests. This pressure can lead many people to rush through projects, often missing the finer details or making mistakes along the way. If you slow down and take the time to make it right from the start, you will realise that your work is actually completed faster. Take the time to engineer products so that the appropriate machining, hardware and assembly drawings are built into your process up front, rather than leaving it to your factory to sort out. Microvellum’s Toolbox software, an AutoCADbased design for manufacturing platform, provides users with the flexibility to engineer intelligent products that can parametrically respond to user input to include every detail needed for production. Communicate with your team It’s important for your CAD engineering team to create a positive relationship with the builders in the factory, rather than having an “office vs factory” mentality. Consider bringing your production team’s opinion into your engineering process. Your builders can help your engineers design products that are easy to build.

An engineer should always establish the initial idea of how products are to be designed but should seek the shop’s approval to ensure that what they have designed will flow smoothly through the machining and assembly process. This helps build a strong relationship between the two departments and allows a teamwork mentality to grow within the business. When engineers and builders work as a team, the mistakes tend to be fixed quickly because they are looking for a solution rather than spending time determining who made the mistake or placing blame. Examine your workflows An engineer’s job goes beyond the initial work related to developing a product, or maintaining

catalogues or libraries of products. Your job as an engineer is also to help save time when it comes to the production and manufacturing of products. One way to determine or measure an efficiency improvement is to calculate the individual tasks related to accomplishing a project and minimise the overall total. For example, is your CNC operator spending time writing manual programs at your CNC machine? If so, they could be wasting valuable time that could be spent in other areas of production. Have you thought about the total number of applications you have in place to accomplish your overall goal of getting a project out for delivery? Far too often, woodworkers are bogged down by their process and have accumulated

multiple channels to drive their production. Microvellum software helps minimise your touchpoints and drastically improve your production, allowing for more throughput in your operation and engineering. Invest in your team Henry Ford once said, “The only thing that is worse than training your employees and having them leave, is not training them and having them stay”. Your engineering team plays a vital role in your overall production. Allowing your team to get out of touch or stagnate can cause serious problems. Successful business owners recognise this and invest in their team, seeking out training opportunities wherever they may exist. Take part in webinars, user group experiences, factory tours and education to ensure your team has the knowledge they need to be successful. Maintain a standard operating procedure Once you have your engineering and production process in place, share it with all departments and personnel. Maintaining an active Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will allow you to systematically evaluate performance goals and identify areas for improvement much quicker. When onboarding new employees, you will find that their on-the-job satisfaction is much higher when they have a documented procedure for success. The hidden value of professional product support

Salvador SuperPush 200, one of the most popular crosscut saws in the UK

The exponential growth of Salvador crosscut sales in the UK and Ireland has continued in 2022. Daltons Wadkin, sole distributor for Salvador, has gained further market share by elevating itself above the competition through continued investment in aftersales support. “Competition is fierce,” comments Daltons Wadkin MD, Alex Dalton. “Other manufacturers and dealers rely on marginal price differences to win business. Our philosophy over the past 120 years has been to supply high quality equipment from specialist European brands backed

by industry leading product support. When considering the life cycle and production impact of a Salvador crosscut saw, this formula offers exceptional value for money.” To ensure continuity of service for existing and new Salvador customers, Daltons Wadkin has made further investment in its support team with additional field engineers and office-based technicians for telephone and remote assistance through network monitoring. Consumable items, tooling and spare parts stocks have also been increased to counter any

potential Brexit import delays at customs. “Our ability to provide a professional turnkey delivery, installation and training service helps customers maximise their return on investment,” concludes Alex. “High production equipment such as this demands the highest level of product support – for us, this is equally as important as the machine itself.” For more information on the Salvador range of crosscut systems, contact Daltons Wadkin on 0115 986 5201, email info@daltonswadkin. com or visit www.daltonswadkin.com

Abies Polska increases efficiency by 30% with OHRA cantilever racks By switching from floor storage to storage in OHRA cantilever racks, Polish timber trading company, Abies Polska, was able to increase the efficiency in its outdoor logistics processes by 30 percent. In addition, the wooden goods stored in eight rows of racks – at around 26 metres long – are now protected from the weather thanks to the integrated roof and clad walls. Efficiency slowed down Abies Polska is a specialist in the trade of KVH and BSH timber. Until now, the timber packages and individual battens up to 13.5m long were stored outside on the floor at the company headquarters in Pszów. But moisture and dirt

repeatedly caused damage to the timber. Above all, however, insufficient capacity and the high time required to access the articles slowed down efficiency in the logistics processes and made it difficult to pick individual orders. Racking forms independent building Abies Polska therefore decided to replace the floor storage with cantilever racking. OHRA supplied a total of eight racks, each equipped with six storage levels. The top level is located at a height of 5m – thus the existing floor space of the outdoor storage can be utilised much more effectively. The racks each carry a roof projecting 2.7m on either side and are arranged so that the roofs overlap. Additional protection is provided by a cladding of the outer walls, which was done with high-quality sheet metal due to the specifications of the building authority. In this way, the racking system forms an independent, high-quality building.

Flexible rack construction Using a forklift, individual items can now be accessed quickly and directly. The guide rail at the cantilever base facilitates manoeuvring between the racks. Thanks to the freely suspended cantilever arms, the height of the individual storage levels can be adjusted to different package sizes very quickly and without tools. Processes 30 percent more efficient Eight 26-metre-long racks with integrated roofs form an independent building. Today, time-consuming relocation when accessing individual articles is no longer necessary with the new racking system. Abies Polska was able to increase the storage capacity by 20 percent on the same floor space. In addition, damage to stored goods – also due to weather protection – could be reduced by 70 percent. www.ohra.co.uk

Furniture transport company reduces costs with wood waste heater A furniture transport company in the North West has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating bills. F. Edmondson & Sons has a proud heritage spanning six decades in the specialist field of furniture transport, distribution and delivery, operating from its HQ in Morecambe, Lancashire and delivering furniture throughout Europe for manufacturers, retailers and private clients. As a result of its transportation services, the company acquires lots of waste pallets and crates, so the team at Edmondson started to research the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater to convert the waste wood into energy that could be used to heat the building. As part of the research, directors Russell and Sam Edmondson came across the high-quality range of wood waste heaters manufactured in the UK by Wood

Waste Technology, and contacted MD, Kurt Cockroft, for more information. After reviewing costs and performance, the decision was made to purchase a WT15 heater, which was installed in 2021 by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. “We’re delighted with our wood waste heater which has drastically reduced the amount of waste we send to landfill,” says Sam Edmondson. “It’s also helped the company save money on heating, as we no longer have to run the gas heaters in the maintenance garage on cold days. "It’s such an efficient way of dealing with waste! It not only saves us money, but has added another useful asset to the business that will provide a great return on our investment.” Kurt Cockroft adds: “We were delighted to help F. Edmondson & Son recycle its waste pallets and crates and turn them into free heating for the business. It’s not just

manufacturing businesses that can benefit from a wood waste heater, but any company that ends up with waste wood as a by-product of running its business.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation

and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. Call Wood Waste Technology on 01785 250400 and start to recoup some value from the waste in your business, or visit www. woodwastetechnology.com or www.grossuk.co.uk to find out more.

Combilift launches its new electric sideloader Irish forklift manufacturer, Combilift, has added to its extensive electric portfolio with the launch of the Combi-FSE – a four-wheeled, two directional sideloader in both 5,000 or 6,000kg lift capacity. This new launch is part of Combilift’s drive to help customers achieve their aims of more sustainable operations. Over 60% of the company’s output is now electric, with recent models such as the Combi-XLE and now the CombiFSE focusing on heavier duty

application for industry sectors such as timber, steel, tubes & pipes and builders merchants. Thanks to Combilift’s engineering and design experience, the Combi-FSE delivers on all aspects of reliability, durability, powerful performance and ease of maintenance, combined with the quiet and emission-free electric operation that customers are increasingly demanding. The patented traction system in this new product plays a major part in ensuring the optimum

performance of the Combi-FSE in all weather conditions. Sensors in the front steering axle, linked to the innovative Electronic Traction Control system, enable the two independent 15kW drive motors on the rear axle to be controlled individually, with the speed of each wheel governed by the steer angle of the front wheels to provide improved steering control for the operator, better truck turning radius and reduced tyre wear. The generous glazing of the

cab, particularly the roof to floor windscreen, allows the operator to have an excellent field of vison of the load, the machine and the surroundings. Maintenance time has been kept to a minimum due to key service features such as its quick interchangeable battery for shift work, centralised grease points on the front and rear of the load platform and removable panels for easy access to the motor. www.combilift.com/combi-fseelectric-sideloader/
