CLEANING AGENT LP163/93 ® Range of application: before buffing wheels Container: 30 litres / 200 litres By the application of the cleaning agent in front of the buffing wheels, the previously applied release agent will be removed, together with any excess glue residue. The edge and the glue joint are also cooled. The edging material radius is polished to regain its sheen and match the colour of the surface. Result: An absolutely clean edge.
Range of application: machine infeed Container: 30 litres / 200 litres Application of the special agent to the upper and lower surface prevents emerging glue residue from adhering to the work piece.
RELEASE AGENT NFLY ® Range of application: pressure roller, sliding shoes, tools, edging, protective film Container: 30 litres / 200 litres / 500 ml Spray Application of this release agent onto the pressure roller prevents glue from adhering to it. The release agent is then transfered to the edging and carried to the sliding shoes. It can also be applied to other tooling to prevent glue residue adhering. The NFLY release agent can be sprayed directly onto the edging material to avoid damage to the material surface (Acrylic/Aluminium). In addition, it will also prevent any damage to the protective film on the edging material.
ANTISTATIC-COOLANT LP289/99 ® Range of application: following the edge, band application Container: 30 litres / 200 litres The edge banding material is statically discharged by the application of the antistatic-coolant, and the glue joint cooled at the same time. Tracer rollers and work pieces remain free from milling ships. The glue cures more quickly. Glue build-up on the tools is considerably reduced.
More RIEPE ®quality-products on request The spraying units will only operate maintenance free and ensure the success of your production if these original fluids are used. This is underlined by our experiences. Consumption per fine nozzle: less than 1 litre for 5,000 running meters. Lacquers can be used without problem on surfaces treated with our products. (waterbased paints on enquiry)

March 2016 #269 News / Events Dust Extraction Installations / Updates New products / Trade services
www.furnitureproduction.net
The recent windy, wet and generally inclement weather seemed to echo the overall business sentiment as we begin to get into the 2016 trading year. Compared to FTSE350 business, SMEs and privately-owned firms are reporting a progressive easing of confidence and reports of spare manufacturing capacity, very little sales growth in Q3 and Q4 of 2015 and only very modest investment planned for Q1 2016. But every month, we find examples of companies who are achieving exactly the opposite – reports are plentiful of companies who, with right planning and investment, can surge to new levels of output and efficiency by providing products and services which people actually want to buy – and that is the real challenge. Whether it’s manufacturing bespoke and contract furniture for the hospitality, leisure and office markets or high performance timber windows and joinery, there are sectors where demand remains robust and critically, where there are proven technical solutions to enable businesses to tackle that situation head on. It might seem trite, but in the words of Mr Ocean, ‘when the going gets tough, the tough gets going’.

And talking of events, we are again on our travels over the next few months with the F&JP team taking in Nuremberg, Bergamo and Milan at HolzHandwerk/Fensterbau Frontale, IDEA and Xyelxpo respectively. This might sound like a bit of a journalistic jolly, but this activity enables us to deliver the most up-to-date information from the widest possible range of suppliers across the industry in our magazine, website and newsletters. In my opinion, now is absolutely not the time to ease off from difficult decisions regarding investment, it’s the time to be focused on seeking out advantages using the quite incredible array of technology enhancements and impressive&new products available for furniture and joinery firms and Machinery Equipment try to eke out an advantage over your competition. £95m reinvestment in Norbord’s Inverness OSB mill Norbord has announced a £95 million modernisation and expansion of its oriented strand board mill in Inverness. The investment will upgrade the mill to continuous press technology and nearly double its production capacity, positioning it to meet growing demand for OSB in markets across the UK and Europe, as well as securing the long-term future of its employees and the indirect jobs it provides across the region. The investment is further supported by a development grant from Highlands and Islands Enterprise of up to €15 million. “Demand for OSB is increasing rapidly and this investment will ensure we can continue to meet customers’ needs and remain at the forefront of the European industry,” said Karl Morris, managing director, Norbord Europe and a senior vice president of the company. “Our SterlingOSB product manufactured in Inverness is the UK’s leading OSB brand, and with direct road, rail and port access the reinvested mill will be in an even better position to efficiently serve our customers across the UK and in continental Europe.
“This investment underscores Norbord’s long-term commitment to Inverness and the Highlands region, and we look forward to continuing to play an important role in the community.” Built in the early 1980s, the Inverness mill – at Morayhill, on the outskirts of the city – was the first in Europe to manufacture OSB, and was also the first OSB plant in Europe to receive Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation, reflecting its commitment to the environment. The expanded mill – which Norbord expects to come online in the second half of 2017, with no disruption to production in the interim – will continue its commitment to sustainability, including generating its own heat energy from the biomass wood residue that is a by-product of the production process. Peter Wijnbergen, Norbord’s president and CEO, adds: “This strategic investment reflects the importance and growth potential of our European operations, and will make our already strong European business an even more meaningful part of Norbord’s financial results.” “We have been working very closely with Norbord on their
Karl Morris, MD of Norbord Europe development plans and are delighted to be supporting the company to invest so substantially in its Highland base,” said Alex Paterson, chief executive of Highlands and Islands Enterprise. This development will put Norbord’s Inverness plant on a sustainable footing for decades to come, and is a huge vote of confidence in the company’s Scottish workforce, explains Peter. “It’s worth noting that the positive impact of today’s announcement
will be felt well beyond Inverness and the Inner Moray Firth. Norbord is not only a significant local employer in its own right, it also plays an important strategic role in the region’s forestry sector and is a major user of haulage companies and port infrastructure.” OSB is an engineered woodbased structural panel designed for construction and other industrial uses, as well as for DIY use and in specialty products like furniture. Sika UK appoints new GM
Maker SMEs lack ethics policy
Schattdecor closed the 2015 fiscal year with annual sales of over €600m, breaking the record mark set last year. Across 14 locations, the group processed more than 2b m2 of paper last year, affirming its position as a world market leader. While sales in central Europe and North America remained stable in the previous fiscal year, the group recorded positive market trends in Asia and the Pacific, southern and eastern Europe, the Middle East, and South America.
Global building product manufacturer, Sika, has appointed Dragan Maksimović as general manager, a role that will see him build on the continued growth of the company across its multiple UK markets. The new appointment will see Dragan Maksimović build on the already well established Sika and Everbuild brands in the UK. In 2016, the company is aiming to achieve 6% growth in net sales whilst maintaining profitability levels.
Close Brothers says that half of UK SMEs in the manufacturing sector, or 137,783 businesses, do not have an ethics policy in place in their organisations, with one in ten not knowing if they have one at all.
€40b opportunity A report by Jaakko Pöyry report calls for a recarbonisation revolution of global material flows by increasing biomass materials over nonrenewable ones in the movement of global trade.
Available free to professional tradesmen and women around the UK, Hultafors’ latest product catalogue comes packed with details of the company’s most innovative hand tools and accessories for working effectively – wherever you are on site. Laminating the future Top surfacing firm, Abet Ltd, reports that it has just obtained single site certification for the chain-of-custody standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This follows on from Abet Laminati which was awarded both FSC and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC) in January 2014. As environmental awareness increases, the demand for FSC Certified Chain of Custody material has increased greatly over recent years and the ability to prove that the material has come from well managed forests is a key factor when specifying timber and paper products Abet has worked with BM Trada, an independent third-party certifier of

FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established to promote responsible forest management practices worldwide to meet the social, economic, ecological, cultural and spiritual needs of present and future generations. The Chain of Custody follows the path taken by raw materials from the forest to the consumer. This includes each stage from procurement, processing and manufacturing through to distribution and sales of certified goods where each stage of the supply chain involves a change of ownership. MP Robert Halfon praises “outstanding” Leitz Tooling In response to Leitz Tooling’s local recruitment and apprenticeship drive, capital investment in state of-the-art equipment, and its ongoing charity work, in February, MP for Harlow, Robert Halfon, visited the company’s Harlowbased UK head office to find out more. Leitz Tooling UK is the UK’s largest supplier of tooling to the British woodworking industry with all its tools safety tested to BS EN 847 standards. A privately-owned German manufacturer with locations worldwide, the company has service and sales centres covering the whole of the UK and the Harlow head office is a centre of excellence for diamond tool servicing in the UK. Talking with Robert Halfon MP, managing director Simon Liddell said: “As a global company, the decision to locate our UK head office in Harlow 26 years ago was based on its excellent transport
Left to right: Tony Kumm, engineers supervisor and Brian Maddox, sales manager demonstrate Leitz’s state-ofthe-art tooling service to Robert Halfon MP for Harlow
links to the rest of the UK and into the Continent as well as the pool of skilled personnel on its doorstep. Our purpose-built centre houses not just administration and sales but is our main tooling service facility, and we host seminars and training here most weeks for customers from all over the country.” Mr Halfon congratulated sales manager Brian Maddox, and engineers supervisor Tony Kumm, two of Leitz’s intrepid team along with Dave McCann, who completed the epic Three Peaks Challenge last year raising over £5000 for children’s charities. Always looking to the next challenge, Brian Maddox is running the London Marathon on 24th April this year for Action Medical Research and Haven House Children’s Hospice is campaigning for as much support as he can muster: “The training hurts! I’m probably too old, too fat and surprisingly I’m not the athletic type, but I am fully committed. Every donation helps, not just the kids charities but my motivation too, and at 4am before a 12km training run I need all the help I can get!” Every seminar held by Leitz, be it on tool optimisation and productivity or A+ energy rated timber window
Left to right: Brian Maddox, sales manager; Simon Liddell, managing director; Robert Halfon MP for Harlow, and Tony Kumm, engineers supervisor at Leitz Tooling UK production, has a booking fee of £15 per person which is donated in full to the charities. Mr Halfon said: “It is so wonderful to visit this Harlow-based company Leitz today. It is an outstanding company which employs many local Harlow residents. It is a manufacturer of high quality tooling and what is particularly good is they have actually employed more people over the last few months; another example of why jobs and businesses are coming back to our town. I congratulate everyone – the staff and the company as a whole – I am very proud that this business is in my town.”
Leitz has an open policy to recruitment across every level of the company, from technical sales and service representatives to apprentice engineers and office administrators. “We continue to grow and improve our capability, capacity, productivity and customer lead times,” said Simon Liddell. “Part of our succession planning includes local recruitment and building the skill set needed to satisfy the industry of tomorrow.” To sponsor Brian’s London Marathon for Action Medical Research, visit: https://www.action. org.uk/sponsor/BMaddox1. Save Brian … from himself. Please. Cue the music. You remember The Lonely Man theme from The Incredible Hulk? That music. Brian is a grandfather, close to his family. As sales manager for Leitz Tooling he is passionate about his work and driven to bring smooth and efficient productivity and maximum profitability to as many companies as he can. He also likes to raise money for charity. But this is Brian. This means that we’re not talking 24 hours in a comfy bath of baked beans. Oh no. Last year Brian was the driving force behind the Leitz team’s fantastic Three Peaks Challenge achievement, which raised over £5000 for Action Medical Research and Haven House Children’s Hospice which offers amazing services and support for life-limited children, and now, he’s running the London Marathon. Did I mention he’s a granddad? I’ll let Brian explain. “I admit, the marathon was on my bucket list...” Hold it right there. Who puts the London Marathon on their bucket list? Sorry, go ahead Brian. “... so I thought WHY NOT. Well, there are many reasons I am finding out WHY NOT. The training hurts … a lot. I am too old ...” I did mention he’s got grandchildren. “... I’m too fat, have a dodgy foot and now (after some
FP269_pages.3.indd 10
painful physio) a dodgy back and even manky arm which may or may not have something to do with falling out of a loft and driving zillions of miles.” Don’t worry Brian, self-driving cars are no longer a fantasy! “And you might be surprised to hear ... I am not really the athletic type.” The point is, Brian – and two brilliant children’s charities – needs support. Every donation helps not just the charities, but his motivation too, and at 4am before a 12km training run he needs all the help he can get. Since the beginning of December, Brian has run 8 x 8.5km, 9 x 10km, 2 x 12km and 2 x 20km, and he is still going. The race is just over 42 kilometres (26-and-a-bit miles), which is a very long way, even in a car. Exhausted yet? Let me tell you – he isn’t. Is he committed? Yes. But not in the men-in-whitecoats way he should be. If we can raise enough money for his London Marathon, he might be happy that he has made a difference to the lives of the children who benefit from these charities and finally hang up his trainers to spend more time with his grandchildren.
Camera-shy Brian Maddox equally good at fighting off the paparazzi and exhaustion! Completing the Warrior Adrenaline Race (WAR) 2015 There is a rumour that if you sponsor Brian and are in London to support the event (and Brian survives), the beers are on him. What’s that, Brian? You’re looking at signing up for the Kilimanjaro Challenge? Step away from the computer Brian, step away. Please help us save Brian from himself, and help as many children as we can in the process. FIRA installs new chairman The furniture industry’s largest furniture association has announced the appointment of a new chairman, Charles Vernon. Charles, who has worked in the industry for over 38 years, will be taking the lead at the Furniture Industry Research Association. Charles takes over from Michael Powell, who is stepping down as chairman after five years with the association. Michael says: “I have been honoured to lead the association and be part of the great work it delivers to the industry over the last five years, but I have decided that the time is right to step down. I believe that a strong association is representative of a strong industry and I am sure I am handing the leadership of the association over to the right person in Charles who I hope will enjoy his tenure as chairman as much as I have.” Charles entered the furniture industry in 1977 when he joined Parker Knoll in its computer department. He moved from computing through production and sales responsibilities. In 1985 he was appointed MD of Nathan Furniture and chairman of Lock of London and joined the main
board of Parker Knoll PLC. In 1993 he moved on from Parker Knoll Group to run Gloster Furniture and, with his colleagues, took Gloster Furniture from being a small UK manufacturer of teak benches into a leading global brand of high quality outdoor furniture. Gloster manufactured in Asia and marketed its products in over 50 countries with its own companies on three continents. He retired from being group CEO of Gloster at the end of 2014. Charles was Master of the Furniture Makers Company, the furnishing industry’s charity, in 2012/13 and now leads its education and training activities and initiatives. He has been a Liveryman since 1988. Charles is also chairman of the Pathways Group that owns the Right to Dream Foundation, a West African football-based organisation founded by his son Tom, and the Danish Superliga football club Nordsjaelland FC. Charles says: “Having been part of the Furniture Industry Research Association Council for some years now, I am really excited about becoming chairman and guiding the association forward. Michael
Charles Vernon, chairman at the Furniture Industry Research Association will be a hard act to follow and I would like to thank him for his contribution to the success of the association over the last five years. I will be working with my fellow Council members and the team at FIRA to ensure that the association remains a potent
force within the furniture industry.” The Furniture Industry Research Association provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry. W fira.co.uk
No management training given at a quarter of SMEs in the manufacturing sector The Close Brothers business barometer revealed that a quarter (22%) of SMEs in the manufacturing sector do not provide management training for their employees, despite an overwhelming majority (93%) or 256,275 businesses*, believing that having strong leadership capabilities contribute to success. The Close Brothers Business Barometer, a quarterly survey of UK SME owners and senior management from a range of sectors, also revealed that three quarters (77%) of firms in the manufacturing sector believe that SMEs need to have leaders throughout the company, regardless of level. A fifth (20%) of SMEs in the manufacturing sector believe that leadership is a quality that only senior people should have. Commenting on the figures, Steve Gee, managing director of the Industrial Equipment Division at Close Brothers Asset Finance said: “It comes as a surprise that a significant amount of businesses do not offer management training, despite a firm belief that leadership is linked strongly
FP269_pages.3.indd 12
with success. Leadership is a quality that helps direct, motivate and inspire others and it must be taught across all sectors of business. The results also revealed that just under half (48%) of SME owners in the manufacturing sector received appropriate levels of either on the job or formal leadership training in their career. This is compared to just over a fifth (22%) who say they did not receive the appropriate leadership training but still became business owners. Mr Gee added: “An effective leadership training programme will most certainly help in creating a winning atmosphere within any business. Those who have responsibilities for managing others need to be properly trained in order for their business to run smoothly and increase the chances of success. “We urge all business owners and managers to understand the importance of leadership and realise it is vital in business. Despite smaller companies having shorter chains of command, the ability to successfully manage and inspire other members of staff is equally as important.”

The Recarbonisation Revolution: Pöyry reports details €40b opportunity Pöyry reports calls for a recarbonisation revolution of global material flows by increasing biomass materials over non-renewable ones in the movement of global trade. A new Point of View by Pöyry calls for a recarbonisation revolution of global material flows, representing a multi-billion euro business opportunity for the forest-based industries. Moving just 1% of global business in packaging, plastics and fossil based material flows would equate to roughly €40b in annual revenue for the sustainable economy, whilst also helping the world tackle climate change. To give an idea of the opportunity possible through recarbonisation, the report applies a modest 1% transition to some core markets: • Packaging: moving 1% of the packaging market from fossil plastics to biopackaging equates to €6b in turnover. • Plastics: moving 1% from fossil plastics to bioplastics equates to about €3.5b of new biobusiness. • Material flow: substitute 1% of the global volume of fossil fuels with biomass, and process that biomass further in the forest industry would equate to roughly €30b of annual
new biobusiness. The Recarbonisation Revolution details how the world is facing the profound issue of climate change and, at the same time, witnessing new developments in technology and materials sciences. This convergence makes the recarbonisation revolution both desirable and possible. Quantifying the exact benefits of biobased solutions and recarbonisation is complicated but environmentally a renewable biobased solution beats a fossilfuel-based one. The carbon in recarbonised flows is CO2-neutral as part of a closed loop as long as the loop functions well. As an example of the potential carbon savings possible through recarbonisation, eliminating plastic bags globally would reduce the equivalent of the UK’s total annual CO2 emissions by 5%. Petri Vasara, head of biofutures at Pöyry and author of the report, says, “Recarbonisation is already a global business with a turnover in the tens of billions of euros and major players
across the globe. For example, where the old Airbus A340 consisted of about 10% composites, the new A350 is made of more than 50% – this gives an idea of the potential for new biocomposites. “Despite this growth however, the exact roles of players remain unclear and the rules are still being determined. We are all now in the process and are able to influence what is going to happen. “In fact recarbonisation in materials is very much driven by brands, as the pull of a brand promise is a powerful incentive for the whole value chain, such as IKEA’s promise to have 100% renewable or recycled plastic in its products by 2020.” Four material platforms stand out as examples of the possibilities of recarbonisation: lignin, sugar, nanocellulose and graphene. The first three are carbon-based and graphene is pure carbon. Together they have the potential to radically change the materials world. When lignin, sugar, nanocellulose and
graphene are mixed with each other and/or other materials into biocomposites, there is a great deal of possibilities in materials production. To read more, download Point of View: The Recarbonisation Revolution from the Pöyry website. W poyry.com

Since Panorama Kitchens first met Schelling in 1997, the relationship has gone from strength to strength and Panorama’s investment in Schelling is a resounding vote of confidence.
Panorama invests in Top Floor Solution Roy Rotheram, Panorama Kitchens’ managing director explains that for modern manufacturers, the warehouse has become a critical component to achieving manufacturing excellence. He says that the most competitive companies are learning to synchronise material movement between the warehouse, production and other operations. “Material storage and production synchronisation leads to considerable efficiencies, quality improvements and cost savings and this is why we have recently invested in a new Schelling fh4 cutto-size saw and VS12 board storage system. Now we are able to link our storage facility and production with our order processing via EQ software which delivers a seamless integration of data processing,” explains Roy.
Against a background of limited ground floor factory space the importance of organising the cutting solution was vital – there was only one solution which meant going upwards onto a mezzanine floor. This meant designing a bespoke scissor lift infeed solution on the ground floor to perfectly meet up with the board lift carriage mechanism on the mezzanine floor. Markus Freuis, managing director of Schelling UK, comments: “Let’s face it, it’s been a challenging project with limited space so it has been very satisfying when the same factory space delivers over 30% more production.” The design and operating concept of the fh4 saw and VS12 board storage system places the focus on ease of handling, ergonomics, safety and most importantly, the independent functioning of the saw and board
storage system. Even though the two areas are separated by protective grids, they will continue running even if the other side is switched off. Boards can be continuously cut by the saw while the board storage system is collecting and loading the next batch onto the infeed table. For Panorama, even further productivity was achieved with HPO and XBoB software. This optimisation and remainder management software ensures a high material yield and that no remnants go to waste. All remnant pieces are recorded in XBoB and labelled before storage. For each new job, the optimisation system detects immediately whether there are suitable leftover boards in the area storage system and plans these into production accordingly. The project was fully 12 months in the planning and Schelling assigned
a dedicated project manager to act as a primary point of contact following the sales, engineering and commissioning of the system. During the design phase, a considerable amount of steelwork, requiring structural calculations and other engineering issues had to be considered before the best solution was signed off. To assist with the design solution, Schelling uses in-house design software to simulate material movements within the building. This enables the company to design tailor-made concepts suited to every specific situation. Markus comments: “All projects face challenges, but our in-house experience and strong installation team resolve these problems. But Schelling support doesn’t stop when your system is installed: we remain at your side to help ensure that it continues working efficiency › › ›
This Schelling installation delivers over 30% more production using the same factory space

throughout its life cycle.” With VS storage zones of up to 16m wide and 100m long with only 10cm between each stack, it is no wonder that Panorama is over the moon with its purchase – with over 40 different kitchens to choose, the automated board storage system copes effortlessly with this vast quantity. Gone are the days of a forklift driver searching and splitting a stack of boards to get to the desired panel, after which the panel has to be man-handled back to the production area, which is not only time consuming but boards can be damaged during transit not to mention the health and safety issues.

The Schelling board storage system knows exactly where every panel is located and delivers the panel to the saw, saving time, reducing the workload for employees, eliminating the possibility of damages and improving the productivity of the saw.
In part this is delivered by the 150m per minute travel speed in the X and Y axes while in the Z axis (up and down) it is 60m per minute. Also thanks to powerful servo motors, the trolley runs smoothly and quietly on vulcanised high performance running wheels. This is why we say “the trolley really shoots off”.
Roy Rotheram says: “Looking back we are about to celebrate our 50th anniversary next year and based on our recent production machinery investments, what better way to ensure that we will be around for many more years to come.” T 01937 586340 W schelling.co.uk

Pyramid Display Materials, the UK’s leading supplier to the sign and display industry, has bought a Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw for its newly-opened depot in Castleford, as well as investing in a second machine to replace a 10-year-old model at its Manchester site.
Two more Striebig saws for sign industry supplier Both saws are used to size a variety of plastic sheet materials including foam PVC, a range of composites, including aluminium, and acrylics. They arrive in sheets of up to 3m x 2m in size and ranging in thickness from 3mm to 10mm, before being converted to the sizes specified by customers. The Swiss-made Striebig Evolution features numerous automated functions making it the most efficient manually operated saw available. The model 5224

model chosen by Pyramid is one of nine different sized versions in the Evolution series. It has a maximum cutting size of 4300 x 2240mm and a maximum depth of cut of 80mm. Featured as standard is Striebig’s user-friendly “touch and saw” operating system which delivers easy and convenient machine control through a touch screen panel that operates all of the machine’s functions.

Features that are optional extras in other saws are included as standard. They include a digital measuring system, accurate to 0.1mm, and an adjustable precision display that can be set to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1mm, according to the thickness of the panels being sized. The Evolution has a fully automatic roller locking function, an auxiliary stop section with its
own tape measure, three additional auxiliary stops for repeat cuts and small work piece support, and automatic moving backing support. Striebig’s highly effective TRK extraction keeps users well ahead of all European legislation, with the panel support system offering support for the thinnest of panels. Pyramid’s group logistics manager Peter Richardson explains: “Because we were totally satisfied with the Striebig saw we had been using in Manchester for the last 10 years we had no hesitation in replacing it with the latest version, as well buying one for our new Castleford operation. “It’s been a totally reliable saw which always gives us a perfect quality of cut, which is why we didn’t see the need to look for an alternative. When you know something’s good, why change it?” Striebig’s sole UK supplier TM Machinery provided full operating training at both sites as well as supplying a stand-alone Al-Ko dust extraction unit for use with the Evolution at Castleford. Pyramid Display Materials’ new Yorkshire site brings to four the number of depots operated by the company, which was set-up in 2002 and now employs more than 100 people. A third Striebig saw, a Standard TRK model, is used at the company’s Gateshead depot. T 0116 271 7155. W tmmachinery.co.uk

Deuco Bathroom Furniture Ltd is now offering a top finish without the old fashioned visible glue line. Based in north London, the company manufactures madeto-order bathroom furniture and supplies nationwide to retail showrooms. Its range of 21 different finishes offers a wide spectrum of bathroom furniture design, with a focus on a top quality engineered cabinet. The company has very recently installed a new edgebander from specialist supplier FEN UK, based in Derby. Deuco sales director, David Windsor, says: “We pride ourselves on making some of the best furniture in the UK. We have been building the business for over a quarter of a century and we pride ourselves in looking after our customers.” He goes on to say: “At Deuco it has always been our aim never to stand still and always strive to improve further. In the past few months, we have noticed a huge increase in demand for our products. Since the installation of the new machine our edging quality has been significantly enhanced.” The new machine supplied by FEN UK features Combimelt, Paul Ott’s patented, fully-electronic glue application system. This, as well as the rest of the machine, has been designed for the application of PUR adhesive and enables a virtually maintenance-free use in production. The finish is considered by Deuco as the best zero glue-line finish due to it being able to match materials perfectly by having no restriction to source the correct colour match due to limited edging material options. Using the Combimelt system, FEN UK says there is no need to purchase special and more expensive edging tapes.
FP269_pages.3.indd 23
After carefully considering all options available from other suppliers over the past year, Deuco made the decision to buy a new Paul Ott edgebander. The machine Deuco specified is Paul Ott’s new STORM model which features an edgebanding process of panels completed at an efficient 20m/min feed speed for all programs. Also included in the installation is the Transcompakt panel return system enabling one operator to run the machine, whilst still efficiently feeding panels. The machine is fully automatic in operation and even the tape is set automatically in its guide. All panels are fully finished, thanks to the patented LCM
cleaning systems installed on the new machine. All cleaning fluids are available from FEN UK and supplied the next day. Deuco’s Paul Terroni says: “Over the years we have had a total of five edgebanding machines, all from the Paul Ott company, and all have been brilliant. After seeing the zero glueline finish, it was an easy decision to upgrade our existing machine to the new STORM edgebanding machine.” He adds: “The panels that are coming out of the machine are all perfectly finished, which is very important to us.” The new machine was supplied in January this year and the brief was to keep any production delays due to installation and training to an absolute minimum. In order to achieve that goal, FEN UK suggested completing the set-up of machine and panel return at its own premises in Derby. That included preparation and testing
of all of the bespoke operating programs required and only then to deliver the machine to the customer’s site. That resulted in an absolute minimal disruption to the customer’s production schedule. On the day of the delivery, the old machine was removed in the morning and the new machine was already in position by lunch time. That enabled electrical and pneumatic supplies to be completed next. Included in the supply was also a new powerful extraction system, which was fully installed and connected in only one day. The result was that both the new STORM edgebanding machine and Transcompakt panel return were fully production-ready the very next day. Paul Terroni says: “The installation was brilliant and the machine was running in no time. The support by FEN UK has always been brilliant.” T 01332 516557 W fenuk.com

Combined with sliding doors, Atira is part of the trend for minimal lines and the merging of spaces
Based on the renowned Quadro runner, InnoTech Atira offers the perfect entree into double walled drawer systems with options for full extension, soft close Silent System or Push to Open solution
What modern interior design is all about: clean, minimal lines and the merging of spaces
The benefits of choice with the efficiency of a platform concept define Hettich’s latest drawer system, InnoTech Atira.
Hettich’s Atira builds on InnoTech’s pedigree This month, Hettich brings its latest double-walled drawer system, InnoTech Atira, to these shores. It will be complemented by Hettich’s ArciTech, which is already successful in the UK in the premium segment. InnoTech Atira already has a strong pedigree behind it as it builds on the reputation of the globally-successful InnoTech drawer system. It has also received a Special Mention 2016 in the German Design Council Design Awards’ Kitchen category along with its stablemate the InLine S sliding door system which received the same accolade in the Furniture category. The German Design Award is presented for outstanding products that are ground-breaking in the German and international design landscape. The InnoTech Atira drawer system won over the jury with its straight lines, clean contours, colour choices and the versatile interior organisation solutions. It is the perfect evolution of InnoTech, bringing a fresh, contemporary appearance to this cabinet interior classic. Production efficiency and choice Various side elements are offered such as railing, TopSide, which goes under the railing, or the full DesignSide. With choices of colour, rear panel width and guides, there is a flexible and simple route to achieving a huge variety of individual solutions. But InnoTech Atira combines these attractive options to create differentiation
FP269_pages.3.indd 24
with high cost efficiency thanks to its platform concept. So, for example, easy upgrades from railing to TopSide or DesignSide do not affect drilling positions or the front panel. It is a recipe for complete design freedom. From the partial extension runner offering the perfect entree into double walled drawer systems to a full extension, soft close Silent System or Push to Open solution, the functional aspects of InnoTech Atira based on the renowned Quadro runner follow the same flexible pattern. Less is more interiors We are in the era of the “less is more” interior according to Hettich. The more we merge our living spaces, the more consumers want a kitchen that stands out without shouting out and furniture which complements the kitchen rather than feeling at odds with it. Hettich believes sophisticated drawer systems, combined with sliding doors, one of the company’s other key product areas, will dominate. This is what modern interior design is all about: clean, minimal lines, the merging of spaces, and technology which is both discreet and satisfying. InnoTech Atira is perfectly-paired with Hettich’s sliding door solutions, because when the cabinet is open, the story of clean minimal lines continues: form and function in harmony. Interprint sets visual accents for decor trends in 2016.
Interprint develops a new Six Pack With busy lives, nothing is more valuable than time. The decisive moment is now – less is the new more. Interprint features this trend with the latest incarnation of its Six Pack. From the wealth of textures, colours and wood types, the Interprint designers selected six trendsetting decors with international success potential for 2016. Interprint says that its research is unique in the sector in that the recommendations are based on the feedback from 200 companies of the furniture and derived timber products industries during the Interprint Furniture Days 2015. Authentic, strong in character, experimental – that is how the six favourite decors of the new Six Pack present themselves. Striking: the overall picture, texture and colour give much greater distinction to the look and feel than the wood type. An easy change of context, for example through different colouring, is possible at any time. Eureka: what a discovery! Oak with the potential to become the urban trendsetter. The natural, authentic character of the decor is deepened by a distinctive porosity and accentuated knots. A real transformation of the new elegance. Pordoi: as clear as a mountain stream is the grain of this fine Swiss stone

pine. Does it smell of forest? The calming aura of the decor is no imagination: multi-faceted play of colour with knots as contrast points. Altendorf: heroic epic of a tree. It is really hard-wearing: the cutting blades of a circular saw. Sand-blasted finishing. And finally the rising up like a Phoenix from the ashes as if nothing had happened. Experimental decor art at its best. Veneto: the high flyer. A marble structure like an aerial view: river arms and mountain ranges. A lively cloud effect of the grey and brown shades in large unobtrusive repeats. It does not have to be the renaissance villa in Florence. It also fits elsewhere. Ravello: the handsome unknown: takes any room by storm. Colour and texture remind you of planks faded by the sun, a change of context dared and won, exotic wood becoming European. People and furniture can only feel comfortable with this decor. Clark: this maple stands its ground. Robust, independent, mad. Persistent on the way to great success: definitely ideal on large furniture fronts. A decor that also knows how to put the cuts into the limelight. With its focused selection of trendy decors, the Interprint design team again provides valuable guidance for the design of a nice home ambiance. W interprint.com/sixpack2016

Progressive Makor finishing lines incorporate ‘new way of thinking’ In co-operation with its UK dealer Schubert Technical Services, Makor has recently installed and commissioned a radical new type of line to paint between 1600 and 2000 window components per day. The new high-speed line incorporates a totally new way of thinking for the window industry; each individual window component is painted in water-based primer in two passes at a line speed of 40mtmin, all around the product. The paint line has the ability to accept product of random length, height and width, either in batches or individual pieces. This new approach gives the line complete flexibility with zero set-up time
between products. Makor says the coating is dry within 10 minutes with laminar air movement and windjet, hot air modules. Once coated on the four sides, the window components are assembled and then top coat paint is applied on overhead conveyor system. Makor is a worldwide leader in finishing technologies and has been a major player in this field for the last 50 years, designing and manufacturing turnkey systems for the woodworking trade. Recently, Makor has also designed and installed a highly automated plant for the finishing of tables and high quality furniture components, extremely flexible and for just-in-time production.
Makor has installed a highly automated RFID plant for the finishing of tables and high quality furniture components, extremely flexible and for just-in-time production
Makor’s StartONE machine includes a control panel and provides a flexibile, reliable, easy-to-use solution for JIT production with paint or glue Each work-piece processed on the line has a Radio Frequency ID with all the information related to the coating cycle. In the various stages of processing along the line, the different control systems, with a radio frequency antenna, recognise the piece and perform the various set-up required on each machine, such as the choice of the coating colour and the appropriate cycle. Other highlights from this installation are Robospray Twin, able to coat through-feed at a
speed of 5m/min, and, in robotmode, complex 3D shapes, as well as the flexible storage at the end of the line where the pieces are stored according to the varying drying times for each type of finish and then taken out based on the packing requirements. Turning solutions From Intorex
Based just outside Barcelona, Intorex is recognised as a world leader in the design and manufacture of CNC woodturning lathes and associated equipment. The company now produces three different models of CNC lathe, each suitable for different levels of production and working capacity. To date there are over 20 Intorex CNC machines working in the UK producing a wide range of turned stair parts and furniture components. The most popular models of CNC lathe are the heavy duty CKI and CKX which have three controlled axes. The CKI features a semi automatic loading system along with three cutting gouges, one hydraulically controlled for rounding the other two for turning, independently CNC controlled for roughing/finishing. Working length capacity can be either 1500 or 2500mm.
FP269_pages.3.indd 36
The CKX model has the same cutting gouge configuration, but is equipped with an automatic hopper feed loading system for continuous production with an optional internal conveyor belt to transport the finished turned component to the end of the machine. Working length capacity is 600, 1300 or 1600mm. Both models use the same dedicated intorEDIT software for the simple and quick design of the components to be turned, with the facility to program at the machine controller or on an office based PC with transfer via USB key. Other standard features include hydraulic back knife units for dowelling that automatically operate through the program, infinitely variable and programmable spindle speed through inverter and a maximum turning diameter of 300mm. Key options include a pneumatic overhead automatic roller steady to
give extra support when turning thin components and/or a pneumatic steady device to hold turned components when being fluted or twisted with the milling head or router head. The CNB model is the entry level machine that can be supplied with either one or two CNC controlled gouges. In all cases the main advantages of CNC lathes over old traditional hydraulic copy lathes is quick and simple set up times as no sample or template is needed, repeat machining accuracy and excellent quality and definition of the turned components thanks to the CNC control. On request, both the CKI and CKX can be supplied in the PLUS version. This is basically a fourth CNC controlled axis that gives the machines an even greater level of flexibility and versatility. The PLUS version allows the machine to be equipped with
either a router or milling head for twisting/fluting that do not require removing as it in addition to the two CNC-controlled cutting gouges. Alternatively, instead of fitting a milling head or router head, a narrow flat sanding belt can be fitted meaning a component can be turned and sanded in one operation. In addition to producing CNC lathes, Intorex also manufactures a range of programmable small component lathes for knobs, handles etc and has even supplied a machine to make car gear knob handles for a luxury brand car manufacturer. Other equipment includes automatic rotary sanders along with specialist machines for boring/ inserting of fixing screws in furniture feet along with dedicated dowel rounding and sanding machines. Discover why automated storage solutions provide the perfect foundations for efficient production If a business uses large flat panels which are processed to produce furniture for kitchens, bedrooms, offices and the like, manufacturers understand the challenges of storing, tracking and handling these unwieldy boards. They are the cornerstone of the business, but the storage, retrieval and handling of them is no easy matter.

“Whether you’re cutting 20 panels a day or 20 per hour, the storage and handling of these panels is critical to the success of your business,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag UK. He continues: “Keeping track of exactly what boards you have in stock, the volumes you are using and the space required to store them, is hard enough, but ensuring you deliver the right quantity of the right board to the required machine at precisely the right moment it is needed, adds another level of complexity to the challenge. “On top of this, there are the health and safety issues for your staff of handling large, heavy boards and the financial losses due to damaged boards through mishandling. “This is where an automated storage system comes into its own. With over 25 years’ experience and knowledge in designing and producing such systems, the Homag Group is ideally placed to provide the perfect solution for both small and large manufacturers.” A truly integrated system “Unlike some of the competitive systems in the market, the Homag Automation division’s automated storage solutions are totally designed and manufactured inhouse. This enables the storage systems to be fully compatible with other machinery produced by the Homag Group. “The Homag Automation products are truly intelligent systems which communicate with Holzma saws or Homag and Weeke CNC nesting machines to create efficient working cells in your manufacturing process. TLF storage systems can be used in conjunction with a beam saw, with a nesting CNC or, with a
Homag’s automated storage solutions – accurate and efficient raw board storage and retrieval
FP269_pages.3.indd 41
The storage systems communicate with saws and CNC machines to create efficient manufacturing cells combination of both. “Alternatively, they can be used as a standalone system to handle stock, then create rainbows stacks on demand and distribute them to subsequent processes or to different factories.” Size isn’t important “There is a perception in the market that automated storage systems are expensive and only for the big boys, but that is no longer the case. Even small start-up companies will not only benefit from, but also can afford to invest in, an automated storage system. “What’s more, the benefits they bring to a business in terms of efficiencies, cost savings, stock control and safety far outweigh any short-term cash-flow issues which can easily be overcome with backing from our specialist financial team. “The efficiency gains come from many areas, but the main driver is that it is the automated system which governs the output rather than
the operator, thus delivering a more controlled and consistent workflow.” Automated stock control “There is a seamless link from the software to the storage system which provides far more accurate stock control. The system notifies the user when boards and even part-boards have been used. It knows where all the boards, whether full or part-used, are in the system and alerts the user when stocks are running low. “The system knows which boards are needed at which machines and delivers the correct quantity just in time, so production is optimised. The system can also generate barcode labels so that once the boards are cut into parts, those parts can easily be identified as they progress through the factory. “The very nature of the boards makes handling of them difficult and even when fork-lift trucks are used they are unwieldy and very easily damaged. The storage system puts an end to all these problems.
“Once the boards have been unloaded off the delivery vehicle and placed in the storage system’s in-bay, the system’s robot takes control, lifting the board and storing it in the right location. When required for production, the same robot arm picks the board and delivers it to the in-feed of the machine where it is wanted. “If required, Homag Automation can also supply robots that will take the machined parts off the saw or CNC and place them on a conveyor system to be transported to the next work cell. “This means that your workforce are no longer at risk of sustaining injury through mishandling of the large boards, And, from a wastage standpoint, damaged boards are virtually a thing of the past, saving significant sums of money in the production process.” Advice on which system is best for your business “Homag UK is the leading supplier of automated storage systems in the British Isles and the most popular models are the TLF 211 for small- to medium-sized businesses and the TLF 411 for larger volume manufacturers. The TLF storage systems are surprisingly affordable and have a very short return on investment. “If you are a kitchen, bedroom or office furniture manufacturer and you haven’t already considered an automated storage system, then I would strongly recommend you at least talk to us. You will be amazed at the difference it will make to both your production processes and your bottom line,” concludes Simon Brooks. Mirka’s Abranet Perfection campaign raises issue of air quality control
A new marketing campaign designed to raise awareness of airborne dust emission associated with sanding is being introduced by Mirka this month. Abranet Perfection is being communicated across print, social media and digital platforms through a series of compelling imagery to highlight the importance of air quality control to minimise occupational exposure to airborne dust in a variety of sanding operations.
FP269_pages.3.indd 42
The marketing campaign is being supported with a beautifully designed coffee table style book that features pre and post Abranet imagery and data to reinforce the abrasive’s ability to deliver clean, virtually dust-free working environments. The data is founded on research conducted by Durag Group, a leading independent environmental monitoring and data management company, in laboratory conditions, supported by the Finnish Work
Environment and Mirka. The aim was to determine airborne dust emission in sanding with a ventilated manual sanding machine, comparing Abranet products with perforated paper. The results showed that sanding with the abrasive net reduced the airborne dust emission per the removed mass at between 99.96 and 99.99 per cent depending on the material, compared to between 97.05% and 99.76% for perforated paper.
When sanding gypsum plaster, the removed mass per unit time was 2.6 and 1.4 times higher with the net abrasive than in sanding without extraction and when sanding with paper incorporating six holes respectively. While the surface of the paper sanding material became clogged, the Abranet abrasive with extraction improved the effectiveness of the sanding by preventing clogging and increased the removed mass per unit time. Craig Daycock, managing director of Mirka UK, says: “The laboratory tests conducted in Finland revealed that by using Abranet in conjunction with modern sanding systems occupational exposure to airborne dust in sanding operations can be decreased to acceptable levels, especially when combined with well-designed sanding machines equipped with local extraction and air supply. “The Abranet Perfection campaign is designed to highlight the benefits of sanding using Mirka’s Abranet range of abrasives in terms of producing virtually dustfree results as well as a consistent, smooth, high quality finish across a range of applications.” W mirka.com

standard machine configurations to meet multiple applications. Included in these options are the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/cutting process for optimum accuracy and quality of finish and the latest A2MC machine control system. This offers a massive 16GB memory for program storage as well as providing network connectivity for error-free program transfer. In operation, the A2MC can adjust the motion of the cutting head/s at a rate approaching five million times per second. Other machine options include a radically expanded (up to 33 stations) ATC (Automatic Tool Change), the AXYZ Vision System (AVS) for enhanced routing/cutting accuracy and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system facility. This latter facility incorporates a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to greater cutting accuracy, faster throughput speeds, reduced
material wastage and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. The Pacer series of heavyduty routers are renowned for their outstanding build quality, continuous and reliable performance under the most testing production requirements likely to be encountered and optimum routing/ cutting accuracy of a wide range of different materials. They offer a choice of three machine options, ranging from the 4008 with a processing area of 1524 x 2438mm to the top-of-the-range 6010 with a processing area of 2159 x 3048mm. All of the routers are built on a single-piece and stress-relieved heavy-duty steel frame incorporating a fully-zoned aluminium vacuum bed with either manual or automatic switching. The steel gantry runs on high-quality linear bearings and is driven on both sides of the router by servomotors coupled via planetary gearboxes together with the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. Mindful of how important selection of the correct tooling is to the performance of a chosen router
for specific applications, AXYZ International also offers the 24/7 online CNCRoutershop facility. This recently expanded technical support facility provides a wide range of tooling options, including collets and cones, special-purpose routing/engraving tools, oscillating and tangential knife-cutting blades, accessories, software and spare parts, all of which are compatible not only with AXYZ and Pacer routers but also virtually any other make of machine regardless of type or country of origin. Lending further support to this facility are wall charts and product literature to assist tooling specification and to determine the correct cutting speeds for different materials, breakdown cover and on-site training for AXYZ International machine owners. This can be carried out either at the customer’s own premises or at the new facility in Telford where selected machine options can be viewed and demonstrated. T 01952 291600 W axyz.com

Green solution gives red hot performance at Welsh bar fitting specialist An environmentally-friendly wood waste extraction and heating system supplied by Wood Waste Control (Engineering) is delivering a red-hot performance at the new South Wales factory of PD Morgan. PD Morgan is a fast-growing bar fitting and joinery specialist with customers across the UK including KFC, Wetherspoon, Premier Inn, Punch Taverns, Enterprise Inns and Greene King. To cope with growth the company has moved from its factory in Ogmore Vale, Bridgend to a larger 12,000 sq ft purpose-built unit nearby. Dean Morgan, managing director of PD Morgan, said: “The new factory has much higher ceilings, and also delivery access is much better suited to our growing business.” As well as metal and plastic, PD Morgan works with a variety of wood products including solid timbers, plywood and MDF. Dean Morgan said: “We have 21 different machines that need dust extraction and when we moved into the new factory we researched suppliers of dust extraction and heating equipment. We chose Wood Waste Control from a shortlist of four suppliers because they offered the best value for money.” Wood Waste Control is one of the UK’s leading dust extraction and heating equipment specialists for the woodworking industry. Its modular silo
and chain filters meet a wide range of extraction requirements and from simple stand-alone bagging units through to complex integrated systems, the company provides a comprehensive service. The products include the Whisper range of silenced fans and fine dust filter units. The company is based in Bourne End near High Wycombe and has hundreds of successful installations across the UK and aound the world. For PD Morgan’s new factory Wood Waste Control specified, manufactured and installed a WFS/13/1.5J silo filter with 33 inch pressure blower and 30HP fan motor. Discharge from the unit is through a one metre rotary valve mounted beneath the hopper section to allow the waste to fall under relatively pressure free conditions into the waste container beneath. Due to the modular construction of the WFS range, the system has the flexibility to be extended to cater for future expansion. In addition, Wood Waste Control supplied its WT15 wood-fired warm air heater, rated at 145kW/500,000 Btu’s output. Dean Morgan said: “WWC sent a good team to install the system, which is now live and doing its job very well. The extracted wood dust is sold to a local farmer for turning into wood pellets for biomass heating there, while wood offcuts are fed by hand into the heater to provide space heating.
Wood Waste Control’s highly effective extraction solution at PD Morgan The heater is very good and much better than the model we had in our previous factory. “It’s a very eco-friendly solution, which will reduce our landfill burden and associated costs, provide free heating for our factory, and generate income from the dust we produce while also enabling a local farmer to benefit. “All our wood waste is now disposed of efficiently and in an environmentally friendly manner. We are very happy with the new system – and with Wood Waste Control.” T 01628 525290 W woodwastecontrol.co.uk

Established in 1986, Kelvin KBB employs more than 300 people at its modern 106,000ft2 facility at Cumbernauld, Glasgow, from where it provides leading house builders and developers with an integrated capability in design, manufacture and installation of kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Kelvin KBB is a long-standing customer of Cades Ltd and, when Cades was appointed as an authorised Ecogate installer, it was keen to explore the potential of the acclaimed computerised extraction optimisation system. Kevin Lumb, facility and maintenance manager at Kelvin KBB, explains: “When the company decided to invest in a new Biesse Stream edgebander, we called in Steve Rhodes of Cades to discuss the changes in our dust extraction requirements. The existing dust extraction system was installed a number of years ago and employs four main extraction fans, with a total power rating of 180kW. “Adding the new edgebander was going to significantly exceed the capacity of our existing extraction system which meant we were faced with the prospect of having to purchase a whole new system.” As is the case with most workshops, the four fans had been installed to run continuously, at full load, all day long. However, following a thorough site survey and energy appraisal, Cades was able to
determine the extraction demand for every single machine in the workshop, and from this it identified how the four fans could be adjusted for volume and duty cycle, with the aim of lowering the average total volume and, therefore, reducing the overall power consumption of the system. Steve Rhodes, sales director at Cades, says: “All machines in the workshop are now fitted with motorised Ecogate damper gates, which automatically open and close as machines are turned on or off. By installing Ecogate Power MASTER variable speed drive units, with integral greenBOX 12+ controllers, the speed of each fan is continually adjusted as the individual machines come on or off line. “Retrofitting the Ecogate extraction-on-demand system means that the existing filter and fans can now cope easily with the demands of the new edgebander and, in addition, Kelvin KBB is saving around £20,000 a year in electricity costs.” Kevin Lumb adds: “Installing Ecogate obviously made sound business sense and Cades’ engineers carried out the work with little or no disruption to production. We now have a much more efficient, automated extraction system and, as well as the economic advantages, we are also benefiting from having a very much quieter workshop.” T 0845 838 6166 W cadesltd.co.uk

When David Waldron, MD of GP Cases in Wiltshire, began researching new dust extraction for its wooden packaging business to upgrade an old and rather tired system at its 20,000ft2 factory in Royal Wootton Bassett, the company knew it needed specialist help.
Meticulous planning pays dividends for Dustraction at GP Cases
No. 27 RV four-section modular filter by Dustraction is mounted on a steelwork support and discharges all waste at GP Cases via a Dustrax No 33 floor-mounted, heavy-duty fanset
GP Cases had been running an old, labour-intensive layout for years and towards the end of 2015 the company wanted to combine a new dust filter and extractor with the installation of a biomass heating system. So Steve Matuska made a number of visits from Dustraction to assess the requirements on a site where dust extraction and waste wood fuel needed to be chipped, integrated and conveyed into a purpose-built storage silo to feed the biomass boiler manufactured and supplied by Wood Waste Technology. Heat is generated from wood fuel and used to supply hot water to radiators throughout the factory buildings and offices.
FP269_pages.3.indd 54
“The old extraction system was inefficient and very labour intensive,” says David Waldron. “Filtered waste was discharged into plastic bags which, as they were filled, were taken off outflows manually, the bags replaced and the waste then taken outside to a skip for dumping to landfill. “This, together with the disposal of offcuts, represented at least five man-hours per week so the new automatic layout brings a significant reduction in manpower that can now be redeployed more productively.” Waste is now converted into fuel by a chipper and transported along Dustraction’s ductwork, runs to its filter system and up the inclined

conveyor to a new purpose-built storage silo. GP Cases has a very good website – www.gpcases – explaining the range and extent of bespoke timber packaging it can design, manufacture and supply. It is a successful family business which has been based in Royal Wootton Bassett for the last 50 years. Dustraction replaced all ducting mains throughout the GP Cases factory for the fully automatic transportation of dust and woodchip fuel from all existing drops serving band-, panel- and cross-cut saws plus the range of timberdimensioning machinery in use at any one time, and transporting waste via noise reductive, aerodynamicallydesigned branch ducts on tapered sections. Steve Matuska reports that a new fully-sequenced control panel services around a dozen individual machines via fully enclosed fans on anti-vibration mounts, using flexible isolation sleeves and outlet attenuators to reduce break-out noise to an absolute miniumum. A No 27 RV four-section modular filter by Dustraction is mounted on a steelwork support gantry and discharges all waste via a Dustrax No 33 floor-mounted, heavy-duty fanset to an inclined conveyor and an externally mounted silo that is now also feeding a new biomass boiler by Wood Waste Technology fully automatically. This is the latest 199kW boiler which generates 92.4% heat from fuel waste burned compared with 68% by Wood Waste Technology’s 150kW model that it supersedes. Dustraction’s filter system comprises more than 1000ft2 of cloth with a filtration velocity of around 2.38m/min and an automatic shaker system which is designed for periodic removal of cake dust from the filter areas during manufacturing and also on shut-down. “I must give all credit to the men from Dustraction for their help, expertise and sensitivity in providing us with what is to us a revolutionary new extraction and conveyor system,” says David. This was a difficult job for various reasons, Steve adds, but the planning and attention to detail was meticulous from the outset and that made a major difference when it came to the Installation. “We had very little margin for error because of constraints on height and length but it all came together in the end; we are very pleased with the new system and, more importantly, so is Mr Waldron!” T 0116 271 3212 E steve@dustraction.co.uk W dustraction.co.uk

Briquetters are quickly becoming a standard item in a typical manufacturing environment.
Turn costly problems into practical and commercial benefits Among the number of reasons why specifying a briquetter is becoming more popular is the ever-increasing costs of both sending waste to landfill and the cost to provide warmth within the working environment. What previously was seen as wood waste, is widely being recognised as a fuel source for heating the workspace – or even a commodity which could provide an additional income – turning what can be seen as a problem producing waste into a benefit. The choice of briquetter is just as important as any other machine in the workshop and there is currently an array of machines on the market to choose from, all with different levels of processing and compaction. However, common to all hydraulically-operated machines is that they work on a given number of cycles per minute and therefore the actual output in kg/h is dependent upon the density/weight of the material being processed. Therefore, specifications usually give a working parameter of production, for example between 15 and 60kg/h, or may say maximum output 60kg/h. The fact is hardwood is heavier than softwood and given a fixed number of compression cycles per minute will give different levels of production.
The E55 touchscreen
The Nano
FP269_pages.3.indd 56
The Vertical The compaction of a briquetter is very important and again some machines offer a higher compaction than others. The reason this is important is that if the briquettes are to be bagged and sold, they must be solid enough to keep their form during packing and transport. Just as important is that the briquette must stay compact when used as a heat source otherwise it will smother the flame instead of burning. For these reasons, Lacashire-based woodworking machinery specialist, J & C O’Meara, has selected 16 different models to make up its range of briquetting machines which can cater for a huge range of requirements, including the possibility of briquetting MDF dust and having a briquetter directly linked to a dust extraction system, offering a closed circuit from extracting dust to producing briquettes. This also has the benefit of saving labour costs in transferring the waste and also eliminates health and safety risks of manually carrying the large dust bags and the inevitable airborne dust produced during handling. J & C O’Meara’s series of briquetters are available in three different configurations: Nano – the compact briquetter; Traditional – a series of machines which are gravity-fed, the smallest
producing up to 60kg/h and the largest upto 210 kg/h; and Vertical – very similar to the Traditional series, but where the closing cylinder has been mounted in a vertical position, hence changing the shape of the machine to allow easier integration when used directly below a dust unit. The Vertical machine also has an auger screw to feed the waste, which, coupled with the sensor at the output, will automatically increase/decrease the waste being fed to maintain a consistent size of briquette whilst maximising the efficiency of output. Machines rated to produce from up to 60 kg/h to 220 kg/h. Carl O’Meara says that he has been selling the company’s Genisis range of briquette machines since 2008 and has a number of successful installations around the country. Along with the traditional joinery machines, the company has been involved with the following projects; a shoe maker, a cardboard recycling company, a shopfitting a couple of recycling companies and a paper processing company. • A leather company producing 12 bags of leather dust every day was paying in the region of £1000 every month in landfill costs. After installing a briquette machine, the result was a reduction in waste volume of 70%, resulting in a massive reduction in landfill fees. • A recycling company with an abundant supply of cardboard shredded and converted this waste into a usable fuel. • A shopfitting company who processes all types of material including raw MDF linked one of the vertical machines directly to his dust unit and now has free fuel for his wood burning space heater whilst also benefitting in lowered costs in sending waste to landfill. • A recycling company purchased one of our machines who shreds secure documentation which is then briquetted along with other materials. • Another installation was where a company was producing a quantity of paper dust along with traditional sawdust. Using an extractor fan to mix the waste which was then blown directly into a briquetter fitted with a filter housing hence there being a closed system. T 01704 893109 W ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

Nederman introduces its most flexible dust collector ever To ensure a perfect fit into virtually any manufacturing application that generates dust, smoke or fumes, Nederman has now introduced its new L-Series, a modular and fully configurable dust collector. In manufacturing facilities where dust, smoke or fume is generated during the production process, the primary objectives are to create a safe working environment for the workforce whilst achieving low emissions to atmosphere, to meet increasingly stringent environmental and health and safety regulations. Since no two facilities are the same, Nederman has designed its new L-Series dust collectors to be fully flexible and configurable to match a wide range of needs in the collection and recycling of dust, smoke and fumes. The core of any dust collector is the filter media. The Nederman L-Series dust collector offers a wide portfolio of filter media in bag or cartridge format, which ensures that performance and filter life is optimised, whatever the contaminant. After selection of the correct filter media, the dust collector is configured to match the required airflow and application characteristics. The L-Series is modular and assembled from a limited set of stocked panels. This panel stocking enables Nederman to offer very low lead times for all the range, with some standard pre-configured filters available in just two working weeks. Nederman’s wide expertise in extraction as well
as collection of dust, smoke and fumes, helps ensure not only a perfect fit, but also efficiency and a future-proof solution. The new L-Series can be expanded to adapt to future process changes or new regulations. New filter modules can easily be added whenever increased filter capacity is required. The L-Series offers low total cost of ownership due to low power consumption, minimum maintenance needs and extended filter lifetime. It can be supplied either pre-assembled or be fully built on-site for those occasions where
access requirements prohibit the installation of an assembled filter. This may also generate considerable savings on shipment costs. The Nederman L-Series is available in ATEX-compliant configurations for safe handling of combustible dusts, as well as with a variety of ancillary components and equipment for configuring the dust collector and system to match all facilities operation and maintenance needs. These options include pyramid- or troughtype hoppers, a no-hopper venting version, dust discharge valves, dust storage bins with 50 or 100l capacity, integral or floor-mounted fans and fan silencers. The portfolio of filter media options and configurations available makes the L-Series suitable for a wide variety of applications, including crusher extraction, spray dryers, foundries, mixers, grinders, kilns, welding, plasma cutting, shot blasting, thermal spraying, biomass, mining, metallurgical, food and other processes. Nederman has built the L-Series to be suitable for rigorous environments and applications. It is robust, resilient and weatherproof, and whilst the modular method of construction makes the air flow capacity virtually unlimited, there are standard sizes which cater for flows of approximately 5000 to 300,000m3/hr, dependent on the application and the media selected. Prime solution for one of the oldest shop fitting companies Kiddie started in 1869 as a small cabinetry business that has evolved through time to become a modern manufacturing base with services including shop fitting, bespoke joinery and aluminium curtain wall and window fabrication and installation, for commercial clients as well as schools, hospitals, medical healthcare practices and care centres. The new wood waste boiler was installed into Kiddie’s 25,000ft2 factory in Southport, which is based in a residential area, with 40 employees working under its roof. When Kiddie’s existing wood waste boiler, bought many years ago from another manufacturer was starting to fail, the management decided it was time to invest in a new one, so contacted Wood Waste Technology because of its reputation for quality, reliable biomass solutions. Wood Waste Technology’s revolutionary boiler is one of the most efficient wood waste boilers available in the UK, having been designed and tested to BSEN3035-2012, the highest standard for
efficiency and emissions. It was also the first in the UK to be declared fully compliant with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme without the need for additional flue gas filtration equipment (significantly reducing the investment and ongoing maintenance costs of a RHI compliant boiler). The team at Wood Waste Technology (WWT) designed a complete system for the Kiddie factory, to give free heating to the factory area just as the old wood waste heater did, but also to send heat to radiators in the office area. As the office previously had to be heated separately by a gas boiler, the management at Kiddie are delighted to be saving around £1500 in heating bills each year, in addition to the money being saved on heating the factory and waste disposal. Stephen Holmes, managing director at Kiddie says: “The new system is fantastic. It gives out so much more heat, is far more efficient than our old boiler and offers more functionality too. Unfortunately our old boiler failed before we had the new one installed, which made us
realise how much money a biomass boiler saves us each year, as all of a sudden we had to hire skips to take away our wood waste, and were spending around £1000 every few months just on waste removal! “It was such a relief when we could burn our waste wood again, to heat the factory, offices and also provide hot water. The team at WWT has given us excellent service, and they even helped us in our application for the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which now generates extra income into the business.” Kurt Cockroft, MD of WWT, says: “Our engineers were the first to use purely primary methods to reduce emission levels in a biomass heating solution, which allows customers to maximise their return from the RHI scheme by getting more money from every kilogram of fuel burnt. Kiddie has also invested in a Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning system from WWT, allowing them to quickly and easily clean the boiler, to help keep it running at maximum efficiency. WWT’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many
companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. More than ever on offer at leading German manufacturing events Two of Germany’s most impressive trade events – Holz-Handwerk and Fensterbau Frontale – take place at the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre from 16-19th March 2016, and according to a number of industry sages, Nuremberg is fast-becoming the international event they would not miss, at any cost.
Every two years, these two symbiotic events set new benchmarks for their markets: HolzHandwerk for the woodworking and wood processing sectors, and Fensterbau Frontale for innovations in the wondow, door and facade construction sector. In 2016, this towering twosome will again become arguably the most important platform for the industry in Europe. “As well as the comprehensive and innovative range of products on display, visitors can enjoy an exciting supporting programme that explores the latest topics and developments,” reveals Stefan Dittrich, event director at Holz-Handwerk. The lack of skilled personnel is an issue that continues to affect the sector. The show’s organisers hope to go some way towards resolving this problem with the introduction of the Holz-Handwerk Campus. This dedicated forum of leading technical and vocational colleges and academic institutions provides a point of contact for recruits to the industry and informs exhibitors and visitors alike about opportunities for training and ongoing skills development. Over 500 exhibitors are confirmed for HolzHandwerk and among them Homag, Weinig,

Festool, Biesse, Häfele are among the stellar line up. Among the catgories of product on show are woodworking machinery, tools, finishing technology, software and organisation, extraction and disposal technology, fixing equipment and hardware, components, semi-finished materials, finished components for furniture making and interior finishing, wood and wood-based materials and environmental protection and industrial safety. To help visitors around the event, a neat app has been created for both events on the Android and iOS platforms. Exhibitors and products can be bookmarked in a wish list, while a dynamic
floor plan helps users navigate around the exhibition. In addition, app users receive push notifications if anything on their personal wish list changes. This year, the events have new opening times: from 10am to 7pm, Saturday closes at 5pm. Hopefully, this will avoid the transport issues which has beset previous events. Holders of exhibitor passes or online tickets can travel free of charge in Nuremberg. Fensterbau Frontale 2016 will present worldwide innovations in windows, doors and facades. Architects, carpenters, window and facade manufacturers, and the specialist trade will update visitors on the latest profile systems, glass in architecture, fixing equipment, safety equipment, machines, installations and many more products. A healthy UK pavilion, hosted by Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) is presenting some of the UK’s top organisations co-exhibiting on a new and shared space at the world’s largest international trade fair for the window industry. Hoffmann shows thought-provoking innovations and solutions at top German trade event
Hoffmann demonstrates the improved efficiency of CNC
Hoffmann MS 35-SF 2011
At the forthcoming HolzHandwerk event in Nuremberg, Germany, Hoffmann will be highlighting its CNC Flex Control machining centre, the automatic routing and drilling machine PP-2 NC and the MS 35-SF mitre sawing/routing machine. One of the strongest arguments for CNC machine processing is efficiency, economy and improving the use of existing processing sequences at every stage of production. However, it is often more economical to use a specialised machine for certain machining operations rather than an existing CNC . Hoffmann Maschinenbau GmbH advises exactly when this approach is the most practical and when its processing techniques are deemed preferable. The main emphasis here, is for use in the furniture industry in general and in particular components for production, as well as construction parts generally, post/beam structures, canopies, carports and wooden floors for terraces etc. The essential factor for these components is the tensile and compression strength of the joints. The integrity of its application is paramount whilst the type of fixing is secondary. Largely the standard version with Hoffmann Keys plus dowels, is the most popular method for jointing. Lamello biscuits, cam and dowel or other brand name fasteners are also possible for preparation on Hoffmann machines. The style and profile geometry of the wooden components are irrelevant. Designated machine technology: NC machining centre Flex Control With its flexible working processes, automated machine cycles and customised variants, the
FP269_pages.3.indd 64
Hoffmann S22-01
NC machining centre Flex Control is optimised for routing, drilling and dovetailing. Hoffmann says the multitude of applications in the efficient production of structural, high-strength wood joints is assured. Workpieces with the dimensions X = up to 600mm, Y = 300mm, Z = 150 mm can be processed. This compact and space-saving machine performs all machining processes with precise three-axis NC technology and a powerful 4.5kW motor with accurate repeatability. The intuitive 10.4in colour monitor with touch screen interface, designs the processes and accesses the parameters of the working axes. The machining cycle is actuated by pressing a button. The machine control panel can also be integrated into existing operating networks. Likewise, data can easily be transferred from the customers’ network via a USB stick. The working function is complemented by the eight-fold tool magazine and automatic tool-change with quick-change function. For customers who require even more efficiency, the Flex Control with an automatic workpiece feeding and/or larger capacity tool magazines is offered. Hoffmann PP-2 NC automatic routing machine For the preparation of corner joints with Hoffmann Keys plus dowels, the automatic routing and drilling machine PP-2 NC is the ideal choice. All geometries of profiled sections in wood are possible. Two workpieces are machined simultaneously with each machine cycle. The dovetail slot and/or drilling positions – horizontal, vertical or a combination of both directions – can be easily determined. In addition, a free positioning over the entire
cross-section of a workpiece is possible. The drilling and dovetail-slot positions can be freely distributed over the entire cross-section of a workpiece. Processing capacity allows for workpiece cross-sections in X-direction up to max 165mm, in the Z direction up to max 140mm. Combination double mitre saw/router Hoffmann MS-35 SF The combination double mitre/router MS-35 SF is pneumatically operated with two saw-motor units and two additional router motors. It is designed for the simultaneous production of two exact 45° mitre cuts followed by routing of either one or two dovetail slots in each side of the cut mitres. The workpiece cross-section capacity of the machine is 90 x 90mm. It is supplied with a digital length measuring/stop system and can be equipped with extended fences up to 4000mm for long window profiles. It isuitable for cutting wood, plastics and aluminium alike. Similarly, composite materials and material combinations in a common profile can be cut and routered. It offers numerous applications in the furniture industry as well as the windows/ doors and construction industries. A wide cross-section of Hoffmann’s machines, including the legendary bench-top machine Hoffmann MU-2, will be demonstrated, and of course the Hoffmann Dovetail Keys. The range of application is enormous – from fine delicate work to large robust sections. For elegant ornamental picture frames from 8mm width up to constructional sections with large dimensions. Accordingly, there are four different sizes of Dovetail Keys available in various lengths, each one to suit a particular application. W Hoffmann-schwalbe.de

Changing perceptions with W16 It’s one of the most momentous decisions we ever have to make: at the tender age of 16, we have to choose a career path that will inevitably shape our lives for years to come. But, with a widening skills gap emerging in the British woodworking sector, what is being done to entice talented students to work in the woodworking industry? W16 is pleased to announce its own solution to help address the issue of attracting much-needed new blood to our industry. For Jon Gibson, managing director of Didac Training College, his first tentative steps in the woodworking industry were part and parcel of a wood machinist apprenticeship. “Like so many teenagers,
FP269_pages.3.indd 66
when asked what I wanted to do when I left school, I had a vague idea. I liked the idea of working with wood but I didn’t know how I could turn this interest into a career, or what my options were. “Thankfully, I left school in the 80s and I had the support of a careers advisor to guide me in the right direction. I become an apprentice and learnt the skills I needed. This is what forged my interest in promoting the importance of apprenticeships in the industry.” For many students today, the presence of a career advisor in their school is somewhat of a novelty and with the demise of governmentfunded career groups, students have to look for career advice and support in other ways. The leading woodworking machinery and materials
exhibition, W16, has teamed up with specialist woodworking training provider, Didac Training College, and skills development body, Proskills, to create a networking hub for students who are interested in working in the woodworking industry. Promoting the industry to students and potential employers alike, it offers insight into apprenticeships and the tailored training schemes offered by training experts, the qualifications available to them and the opportunities that exist within the industry. “The woodworking industry is fragmented and needs a diverse skill set,” says Jon. “No one course can deliver generic manufacturing training because students in this field could end up creating anything from kitchens and bedrooms to windows and coffins. It’s my job to work with the industry to create challenging training schemes that will develop skills in the student that will prove vital to the industry.” The biggest challenge faced by industry training experts is changing the perception of the students and their parents, whilst promoting the importance of a wider skill set in schools. Jon explains: “The woodworking industry requires a very similar skill set to the engineering sector but we haven’t been as good at promoting ourselves. This could easily lead to a sharp decline in the number of skilled workers entering the industry. We need to attract young students who want to learn and invite employers that see the potential. That’s why W16 is the ideal setting to promote our work.”

Chris Lake, apprentice, G S Haydon & Son Ltd:
“Unlike many college courses, an apprenticeship in the woodworking industry has allowed me to learn my skill in the workplace. I enjoy working with my hands, that’s why I wanted to become a joiner. I was able to learn on a number of different machines and wasn’t limited to what a college had to offer. I also had the added advantage of working with a team of skilled joiners.”
Lisa Williamson, apprenticeship and qualifications development manager, Proskills:
“Working alongside W16 will help us raise awareness and show employers just how important students are to the industry’s future. Events like W16 will raise the industry’s profile. It offers so much potential, we just need to shout about it.”
Graham Haydon, director, G S Haydon & Son Ltd:
“Every craftsman has to learn his skill and an apprenticeship scheme offers a structured approach to training. I started my career as an apprentice and I appreciate the importance of on-the-job learning. The industry needs to use the scheme to nurture new talent. We do exactly that and as a result, are team of joiners are really talented.”
To put things into perspective, in 2014-2015, there were 499,900 apprenticeship starts in England, 14% more than the previous year. However, look deeper into these figures and you’ll see the furniture, furnishings and interiors industry only took on 460 apprentices and the wood and timber processing and merchants industry only filled 30 apprenticeship roles. In an attempt to increase these numbers and show W16 visitors exactly what the industry has to offer, Jon and his team will be heading up the exhibition’s Competition Zone at this years W16 exhibition. Winners from regional heats will compete live at the show to win valuable work experience with one of the industries biggest names. “Unlike furniture or bench joinery, woodworking machinery doesn’t get represented in the UK’s skills competition so it’s a great opportunity for students to show the industry exactly what they can do. It’s also a great example to show students and parents what students could do if they went on to complete a woodworking apprenticeship,” explains Jon. Support for tomorrow’s industry doesn’t stop there.
FP269_pages.3.indd 67
The four-day event will also feature a Best Practice Zone that will offer visitors practical advice relating to the industry, including specialist recruitment agencies for those already working in the industry and those interested in a career in the sector. Informative seminars will also be taking place and leading skills development body, Proskills UK Group will be offering a training and educational advice hub for visitors. Lisa Campagnola, event manager of W16 adds, “We understand the importance of manufacturing and we know the industry needs to invest in people in order for the industry to flourish. We want W16 to champion the manufacturers of tomorrow and become a driving force behind the industry’s future. By working together, we’re confident we can make a difference and continue to see the industry grow.” W16 will be co-located with the UK’s only furniture components show, Elements, and will take place from the 2nd-5th October 2016 at the NEC, Birmingham. A single source for the furniture Industry Take a closer look at furniture trade shows in the UK and what do you see? You are sure to find the latest tools and machinery on the market, experience new and innovative technology first hand and be given an opportunity to talk to some of the leading industry experts in the field. But aren’t we missing something? The answer to this question can be found in the details. You can’t create an end product without using machinery and components in tandem. Each has its own unique purpose, but without one, the other is rendered indifferent. So why does the UK not offer a dedicated components exhibition? Cue Elements, the new furniture components show for furniture and KBB manufactures, designers, fitters and specifiers. Running alongside the UK’s leading woodworking machinery exhibition, W, which will takes place from the 2nd-5th October at the NEC in Birmingham, Elements is the missing link in the British furniture manufacturing industry. It completes the manufacturing cycle and, by working alongside a long-standing manufacturing and materials exhibition, provides a single source for the furniture industry.

Ostermann, stand K410 “We’re working to create a show that is truly innovative and an asset to the industry,” explains Element’s events manager, Lisa Campagnola. “Elements boasts its own strong identity and crucially, its own marketing message, giving us the ideal opportunity to create a show that will offer a lasting legacy in the furniture sector.” To create a show that will prove invaluable to the industry, London-based organisers, Montgomery, have conducted market research and actively spoken to a wide range of industry professionals to create a show that will prove successful in aiding the industry’s growth and development. “In recent years, furniture components have been overlooked – but they are vital to design and application,” explains Nicola Swaisland, regional sales manager at Tente UK. “We cover a variety of industries so for a company like Tente UK, attending a new show that targets a wider audience will allow us to make our presence greater in the market.” Predicting more than 8000 visitors over the four-day event, the dynamic visitor range and unique, design-led identity have proven beneficial when attracting exhibitors.

‘Keen to create a fresh approach to trade fairs, the show’s three interactive zones will promote the industry in a new light’ Elements event manager, Lisa Campagnola
“By creating a dedicated components show that will run alongside W16, it offers attendees a one-stop-shop approach to furniture design. This is a great advantage for companies like us that have many strings to our bow. Elements will give us an opportunity to increase our exposure to the whole UK market and allow us to show the industry what we have to offer.” Keen to create a fresh approach to trade fairs, the show’s three interactive zones will promote the industry in a new light. Situated alongside the Best Practice Zone and Competition Zone, the show’s Innovation Zone will showcase newly-launched products and innovative design concepts, offering visual stimulation to its visitors and a unique way to engage in the beauty of furniture products. Ronan Haslette, managing director of wood veneer specialist Merenda, adds: “This new take on a furniture show is guaranteed to bring ideas to life and show visitors just how dynamic wood can be. An exhibition like this will open up endless design possibilities and bring the beauty of wood to life. Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of it?” The Elements exhibition will be taking place from the 2nd-5th October 2016 at the NEC. W elements-expo.co.uk

74 EVENTS IDEA
View further content at furnitureproduction.net
Nearby location to Milan Furniture Show should be a good IDEA for new Begamo supplier event The organiser claims that at the new biennial IDEA event, the furniture of tomorrow can be witnessed by looking at the technology, sustainability and new market visions.
At Fiera di Bergamo, from April 12-15th, at the same time with Milan spring exhibitions and events about design and furniture – Salone del Mobile, Salone del Bagno, Eurocucina – the big players of the furniture industry will meet at IDEA Innovation Design Expo Area. The profile of the event is an exhibition for machinery, new technologies, components and materials for the furniture industry. 2016 will be the first edition of the event created to see, design and plan the future of the furniture sector through, according to the organiser, a collaborative exchange of knowledge between manufacturers of woodworking machines, component suppliers and designers, all strongly inspired by the great opportunities deriving from technological innovation, the growing demand for sustainability and positive international market forecasts. The thinking behind the event, organised by Romano Ugolini’s Ecoarea company, is indeed progressive and demonstrates a clear understanding of the key issues which cutting edge companies will be interested in. What remains to be seen is, how much there is on offer for the mass middle market with perhaps less ambitious attitudes, not to mention budgets.
Event organiser Romano Ugolini
FP269_pages.3.indd 74
The Bergamo Fiera – a free shuttle bus runs between the IDEA fair and the Milan events
Innovative machinery and components will be on show courtesy of the organiser’s ‘innovation rule’
Ugolini references the way which Ikea wishes its furniture to be made, a close to zero emission furniture production philosophy. Other ideals include sustainable production as informed by Associazione Nazionale Verniciatori, high tech laser technology, 3D printed parts from FabLab and Lignum Consulting’s view of effective alignment of all processes – or Industry 4.0 as it is termed. One of the key principles of Ugolini’s precept is that the future of furniture will be a combination of technology and care for the environment. He maintains that all operators can get in touch with this agenda at IDEA. One of the primary objectives of IDEA is to concentrate the latest developments and new applications of the furniture industry in an efficient business and communication platform. The
exhibition space is a limited area of 30,000m2 meaning the focus is on high-quality exhibitors only. IDEA decided at the outset to create what it describes as an innovation rule which obliges every exhibitor to present at least one innovative product at IDEA. IDEA is holding a rich programme of conferences, continually updated on the IDEA website, and indeed, Ikea is one of the marquee names that will offer stimulus and interesting perspectives to the audience. The SCM Group, Koch Technology and Igus are just a few of the exhibitors who will anchor this event which runs from 8am-6pm each day with a free shuttle bus running between Bergamo and the Milan fair. Makita’s new random orbit sander has fine and coarse sanding modes The new Makita BO6050J random orbit sander has two modes of operation. In the traditional random orbit mode for fine finish sanding and buffing, the motion of the pad is orbital action plus random action or freerotation. This stops when firm hand pressure is exerted on the tool. The alternative roto-orbit mode is ideal for stock removal, coarse sanding and polishing. Here the motion of the pad is a combination of orbital action and power-driven rotation. This mains-powered sander, with 750W motor, will run the 150mm pad up to 6800 orbits per minute and deliver up to 13,600 sanding orbits per minute. The maximum orbit eccentricity is 5.5mm. The soft-start system smoothly
FP269_pages.3.indd 76
accelerates the pad when the machine is switched on for operator protection. Variable speed settings can be selected by the dial which is conveniently located on the slim-line body. This narrow body with soft grip gives excellent machine control, and the forward hand-mount enables accurate pressure to be applied directly to the pad. Once the machine is switched off, the electronic pad brake swiftly stops rotation. The pad has a hook and loop fixing to make abrasive changes quick and simple, and the pad can be changed without the aid of tools. It weighs just 2.6kg and is available in 110V or 240V. Dust extraction is a firm requirement in any sanding operation and the new Makita BO6050J has through-the-pad extraction, and a neat,
slim connection tube below the body which is positioned so it is not intrusive for the operator and simply connects to a vacuum dust extractor. A new design of narrow depth skirt above the pad, where the drive is housed, enables the pad and abrasive to get under items to improve access performance. The skirt also acts as a front bumper so that the sanding disc doesn’t graze any adjoining vertical surfaces during operation. For instance, when in use in automotive body shops, this slim pad feature enables the abrasive to get under a door handle to complete the sanding – this would otherwise be missed and have to be finished by hand. This versatile sander will become the core choice for cabinetmakers, joiners and automotive repairers. W makitauk.com
