We look forward to seeing how this plays out when faced with what is still a fairly conservative design outlook from most manufacturers. Noteworthy for adding incredible design choice among James Latham’s product pantheon are XylyoCleaf, Losan and Shinnoki which we feature in this issue. All three clearly add significantly to the outstanding design choices which furniture designers and manufacturers have at their fingertips today. So it has to be said, creating dull, unimaginative furniture in this day and age has to be considered an appalling missed opportunity – it’s time to move on from me-too, beige interpretations of what’s gone before, and get truly creative in 2017!

Biesse Group continues to invest in key international markets Biesse Group continues to focus on the Russian market, indicating the company’s belief in the high potential of the region. Against this backdrop of renewed confidence, the new General Director of the Moscow subsidiary has recently been presented. Matteo Vaglica, a young professional who already boasts a wealth of experience in a number of leading positions in the industrial sector in Russia, expressed his enthusiasm for his recent appointment: “I’m delighted to be joining a Group which is pursuing a number of major investment programmes in this area - in spite of the recent uncertainty of the Russian market, Biesse has chosen not to overlook the region. The company’s commitment has been demonstrated through the consolidation of the new subsidiary in Moscow, and further reiterated by the recruitment plan which is set to be rolled out in the short to medium term. It is my belief that this is exactly the right path to take, in order to exploit the full potential of a market like this one, which has so much to offer,” concludes the new subsidiary director. Elsewhere, following the launch of the multi-functional technological campus facilities in Pesaro (Italy), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia),

Charlotte (USA) and Sydney (Australia), Biesse Group has just announced that a new campus will also be opened in Dubai (UAE). This site will represent the headquarters of the Biesse Group Middle East subsidiary, as well as serving a number of other functions. The company is due to settle into these new premises in the first quarter of 2017, and in the spring, a grand inaugural event will be held, in conjunction with the Dubai Woodshow trade fair. The Group’s investment in this new space serves to further strengthen Biesse’s firmlyrooted presence in the Middle Eastern market, and will undoubtedly bring many benefits for the customers in the area. The multi-purpose exhibition spaces span a total of 1000m2, the largest (and only) permanent operational showroom in the entire region dedicated to machinery for processing wood, advanced materials, glass and stone. The modern building, equipped with a range of cutting-edge technologies, will be located within the brandnew, prestigious Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority. This ‘free-zone’ was specifically built to house some of the region’s most innovative companies, with a view to creating a proper technology park. “We strongly believe in the potential of the Middle Eastern market – indeed, having already

demonstrated exceptional performance, it is expected to grow even further. This will no doubt be enhanced by the Dubai International Expo in 2020, an event that will bring benefits both for our industry and for the region as a whole,” asserts Federico Broccoli, Biesse wood division sales director: “for Biesse Group, the Middle East is a key hub within the context of the company’s global operations. For this reason, we have invested in a campus which boasts the latest Biesse and Intermac technologies. “In addition to this, the facility is also equipped with a classroom for training, a dedicated software space, and a service and spare parts area. This allows us to offer a comprehensive experience to our customers, in order to meet all of their needs.” concludes Broccoli.

An eye for design at PWS PWS has announced the appointment of Jennifer Todd as its showroom and set designer. Jennifer’s background is in interior design, spanning show home, residential and commercial projects, including care homes, restaurants, hotel and domestic schemes. Applying her interior design degree and five years’ experience, she is proficient at spatial planning, concept design, creating moodboards, technical drawing as well as furniture design and product specification. Jennifer will work under the direction of Graeme Smith, PWS’ Senior Designer, who says: “With our packed programme of product development our customers are eager to replicate our new designs in their showrooms. Jennifer will play a pivotal role supporting them to help maximise their display space with the latest kitchen ranges from PWS.”

Mereway kitchens wins Best Product Supplier award Leading British kitchen manufacturer Mereway has won a prestigious industry award from the trade organisation, The Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association – KBSA. Mereway Kitchens was awarded the KBSA Best Product Supplier at the awards dinner that followed the recent AGM and conference. Sales and marketing director, Graham Jones, says Mereway is pleased and proud to be recognised by its peers and colleagues. “This is a special award for us because the votes come from the industry and not a panel of judges,” says Graham. “As a family business we strive to deliver exceptional service and it is

fantastic to have that recognised with this award.” Mereway is a long time corporate member of KBSA and also sponsored the Kitchen Designer of the Year (over 30K) award which was won by Chris Smith from In-toto Kitchens, Southport. “The content at this year’s AGM and conference was excellent,” says Graham, “brilliant speakers that were entertaining and positive about the future of our industry. “The KBSA also made some significant changes to their membership criteria which will be good for retailers. There is now a more flexible framework that could encourage many more retailers to join and enjoy the benefits of KBSA membership.”

Daltons Wadkin equips Wood Trades Workshop Leicester College celebrated the opening of its new £1.6m Construction Technology Centre in November at its Freemens Park Campus on Aylestone Road. A breakfast reception was arranged which was attended by college personnel, sponsors and suppliers and Verity Hancock, the college principal, addressed the gathering stressing the importance of the new development to the people and city of Leicester whilst at the same time acknowledging the contribution from investors, contractors and suppliers as well as teachers and heads of department, all of whom had been essential to the completion and success of the project. She says: “The opening of the new Construction Centre is vital to the college’s plans to invigorate this important industry in Leicester and Leicestershire, enabling us to better support existing and future learners while meeting the growing demand for construction-based training and education.” The mayor of Leicester, Sir Peter Soulsby, was also on hand to cut the tape and declare the department officially open. Daltons Wadkin was chosen as the supplier of equipment for the wood machine shop which was immaculately presented and set out. A Kimla CNC router was put through its paces during the event to great interest from the visitors, this being installed and commissioned by Daltons Wadkin in addition to new sanding, planing and bandsawing machines by Wadkin and machines for moulding, crosscutting and ripsawing.

The company also supplied a complete new dust extraction system, operator training and a

full delivery and installation service. The machine supply project was handled by Alex Dalton who was impressed with the new facility and delighted with the opportunity of reinforcing Daltons Wadkin’s connection with Leicester College, adding: “It is a superb workshop in a high profile situation and something we can be proud to be associated with.” 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

A new dimension to soft close drawers Crofts & Assinder scoops export award

Hettich has added a new dimension to the modern kitchen experience with a drawer system which combines the features of soft close and Push-to-open. This awardwinning revolution in furniture technology is now available in the UK. Push-to-open Silent is now offered for Hettich’s premium ArciTech drawer system. This entirely mechanical solution – no power supply required – is ideally suited to handle-less kitchens. It can be viewed and tested at the company’s prestigious and newlyremodelled showroom in Salford. A gentle push on the front panel is all it takes to open the drawer, and another gentle push closes the drawer quietly and smoothly. Push-to-open systems typically

require more forceful closure to override the opening mechanism. However Hettich’s innovative Pushto-open Silent means no more compromise – the opening and closing action for drawers can be equally convenient and satisfying for the user. Opening force can be adjusted according to user preference and to allow for different drawer weights. The system is hidden from view under the drawer, and can even be retro-fitted with no modification. “This is such an impactful way to add value to a kitchen,” says Hettich UK marketing manager Colin Patterson. “Push-to-open Silent is sure to impress customers in the showroom, provides a real talking point, and represents a great solution for modern handleless kitchens.”

Crofts & Assinder, one of the UK’s premium handle and architectural fittings producers, has won the Export Award at the Birmingham Post Business Awards 2016 – a ceremony which shines a light on the region’s successful businesses. The Birmingham-based business was recognised for its substantial growth overseas and fought off tough competition to take home its award at a ceremony held at The ICC in Birmingham. The company, which has a long history in design, manufacture and global distribution of high-quality products, has seen a surge in overseas wins over the last year. Its client base expands to Japan, Australia, America, Canada, Bulgaria, Italy, The Nordics and France, with export sales now representing 37% of the business. The Birmingham Post Business Awards were set up in 2012, and aim to highlight the companies that are putting the city on the map by boosting the economy, while making a positive contribution to the local community. Alex Crofts, CEO of Crofts & Assinder, says: “Winning the export

Left to right: Richard Crofts, senior account manager; Sharon Crofts; and CEO of Birmingham Airport and sponsor of the export award, Paul Kehoe award is testament to the hard work of our team who have gone above and beyond to grow our international presence. “Our overseas sales are stronger than ever and our aim is to continue expanding into new markets, meet customer demand through product diversification, and invest further in our team and design services. New moulder for ES&W Knowles

ES&W Knowles of Birmingham has been in business since 1923 supplying quality joinery and mouldings to the construction industry. Recent increases in orders forced managing director Steve Horner to reassess his moulding capacity. Steve contacted Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) that had supplied service and spare parts previously for him to discuss its Wadkin Bursgreen range of four-sided planer moulders. Having discounted other manufacturers Steve worked closely with AMS’s Brett Pruce to specify the Wadkin Bursgreen M623S six-head moulder to replace its existing six-head moulder Steve was impressed with the cast construction of the machine, the chrome beds and heavy duty gearboxes. Ease of use was very important and full width, driven bed rollers and intermediate feed rollers ensured a smooth finish on the company’s products. Steve and company chairman Martin Wright visited the W16 exhibition at the NEC in October and after seeing what was available ordered the Wadkin Bursgreen M623S moulder. Advanced Machinery Services delivered and installed the machine and full operator training was given by the company’s highly skilled engineers. Steve commented the service from AMS from start to finish was fantastic from the initial meeting through to installation and training. “We would without doubt go back to AMS for future purchases.” Following on from this, Knowles has now engaged AMS to service the entire mill on an ongoing basis. 0844 844 9949 sales@advancedmachinery.co.uk

Alphacam – EMP’s gateway to impossible projects

EMP Furniture is a bespoke fitted furniture specialist offering a complete service from design through to the full turnkey solution. Alphacam software allows the company to undertake projects EMP could not have attempted previously. Established in 1980 and based in Williamstown, Co Galway, Ireland, EMP Furniture has become a market leader in the residential, education, healthcare and hospitality sectors manufacturing bespoke furniture tailored to specific client requirements. All components manufactured on its Comac MF four-axis CNC router are designed and machined through Alphacam from Vero Software. CAD/CAM supervisor, Noel Mullarkey, says: “Alphacam is a crucial part of our business. Not only is it allowing us to save materials giving cost savings, we are also undertaking projects which we would otherwise be unable to do.” Three examples of projects completed which he says would be impossible to manufacture without utilising Alphacam: Galway County Council Chamber (oval desk): “This large desk was manufactured utilising various materials, delivered to site in several sections which were either fixed or movable, and contained integrated services such as cable management for microphone and data points. The project required pinpoint accuracy during manufacture so that all components fitted in a seamless fashion when they were assembled on site, which would not be possible by traditional means.” Allergan Biologics 2 (Trespa units): “We manufactured a large number of clinical units entirely from Trespa. Due to the compact nature of the material and jointing methods to be utilised we knew from the outset that this project must be manufactured using Alphacam. Machining

FP278.indd 12

included operations such as countersinking, drilling holes, pocketing, grooving, jointing, chamfering and nesting – all of which were viewed in a simulation prior to manufacture.” IT Sligo Extension (Trespa worktops): “This very large project involved the machining of worktops from the original sheet form. All services were required to be machined prior to delivery to site which included grommets, data points, sinks and integrated drainers. We imported our Autocad drawing into Alphacam and nested to quantify materials. Waste was reduced and joints were seamless when installed.” Noel Mullarkey says the vast majority of its products are processed on the CNC machine at some stage of the manufacturing process for routing, drilling and nesting operations. “It’s so easy to import a drawing from Autocad into Alphacam. “We find the simulation feature is particularly valuable as it shows the finished component in a real-life environment before we commence

machining. We also use the nesting functionality to quantify materials and show the products on the sheet material.” On occasion, the Alphacam support portal has helped EMP with queries about the software, as well as advising on machining strategies, tools, feeds and speeds for specific projects. “Updates in the last couple of years have focused on automation, making it even easier and quicker to use, therefore we always keep up to date with the latest twice-yearly releases.” This philosophy is in line with EMP Furniture’s policy of regular investment in state-of-the-art machinery, allowing it to transform seemingly impossible projects into a physical reality. Its continuous improvement schemes have led to EMP bringing many functions in-house which were previously outsourced, giving it greater control over lead times and quality which have improved client satisfaction. alphacam.com verosoftware.com empfurniture.ie

Operator training at a new high – Daltons Wadkin puts safety in the workplace top of its agenda A PIABC quality-assured centre for woodworking machine operator training, Daltons Wadkin is expanding its activities in this sector and has now opened a fully equipped training workshop and classroom at its Nottingham headquarters in order to provide an alternative to its regular on-site training. The workshop is equipped with a range of classical machines with full extraction and tooling and is permanently available for use by students either singly or in groups. Training courses can be arranged on specific or individual machine types or across the full range of equipment. A dedicated classroom is available for further study and participants can take advantage of comprehensive and fully illustrated training manuals for each machine type. Daltons Wadkin has recently appointed two new fully qualified and experienced training personnel who will interchange between the in-house facility and their day-to-day training on-site at customers’ premises. Equipped with transport and a range of tooling to suit different training requirements, and of course their by-now well-known ‘red tops’, the trainers cover the whole of the UK and Ireland providing certificated operator training for individuals or large groups on site using the machinery they employ on a

day-to-day basis. Courses are individually tailored and cover a diverse range of needs with the common objective of achieving safe and best use of woodworking machinery. Training covers most types of machine from small classical models up to CNC and schemes are available both for beginners and more experienced operators as well as refresher training when required. Clients range from small businesses with limited workshop facilities to high production joinery and furniture manufacturers, aerospace and automotive industries, public authorities and government departments. Francis Dalton comments: “Demand is on the increase for these services and as a major supplier of woodworking machinery we regard it as an obligation to be able to provide top class operator training wherever it is required. Our customer base is expanding and we are going to need more trainers to keep up but importantly we go to great lengths to ensure that every training session, large or small, is conducted professionally and efficiently by our own fully qualified personnel. As part of the service we also provide health and safety information in order to help our customers keep up with the latest regulations and to ensure that their machinery is PUWER

Trainers Nigel and Lee prepare machines for a training session compliant and also carry out risk assessments when required. We are aiming high but whether provided as a stand-alone service or an add-on benefit to our machine sales, we plan to both expand the operation and continue to drive up standards and expertise in this area.” Daltons Wadkin worked hard to ensure that its training activities meet the most professional standards and was rewarded by receiving the coveted PIABC Quality Approval in 2015. Further information concerning Daltons Wadkin operator training and also its machine sales and servicing activities can be obtained from the company’s website. daltonswadkin.com 0115 986 5201

On reflection – it’s got to be Fibraplast Lucent

A new dimension for decorative surfaces is being offered by Timbmet, which now stocks the new Fibraplast Lucent range of high gloss melamine-faced boards from Finsa. Fibraplast Lucent, available in a range of 15 muted solid colours and classic woodgrains, creates a tremendous variety of possibilities in furniture, interior design and shopfitting. Breakthrough technology used in the manufacturing process gives the boards a superb scratch- and UV-resistant surface quality. The resulting high gloss finish works perfectly with current furniture and interior design trends. For projects requiring a matt finish with the same standard of quality, a Supermatt option is available for selected colours. The first class quality of the MDF core also makes for excellent machinability and consistent mechanical properties. Paul Thatcher, panels trading director at Timbmet, says: “Our customers are increasingly looking for higher technical performance and ontrend décors. The new Lucent collection gives a cost-effective option, and is the ideal addition to our existing range of decorative panels.” All boards are PEFC certified and come in 2800 x 1220 x 18mm sheets. timbmet.com

Decorative Panels introduces dp-limitless

Close up of the smoothing roller The Decorative Panels Group has always been innovators in the latest materials and technologies and 2017 will see this tradition continue with the launch of the new dp-limitless range by Decorative Panels Lamination. Commissioning of the brand new laminating line is well underway within dp-lamination’s 140,000ft² manufacturing facility which is located in Elland, West Yorkshire, with the first trial materials due for lamination imminently. The laminator will utilise a high bond strength PUR glue line which will ensure a superb overall finish on sheet sizes up to 3660 x 1430mm, (although 2440mm x 1220mm and 3050mm x 1220mm will make up the majority of the offer) in quantities from one sheet upwards. The range of surface finishes currently available from Decorative Panels Lamination under the banners of dp-decor and dp-specialist is already one of the largest and most diverse in the UK. Comprising over 100 woodgrain and solid colour designs within dp-decor and exceeding 200 surfaces designs within dp-specialist including; high gloss and matt acrylics, PVCs and PPs, it could be argued that Decorative Panels already have all the bases covered – so why launch dp-limitless? Group managing director Guy Metcalfe takes up the story: “dp-limitless is a logical extension of our offer and one that we have been researching for some time now. Decorative Panels Lamination has always been known as a business that offers a wide range of products on very quick lead times to a very wide

FP278.indd 18

marketplace. “We have been innovators in terms of substrate as well as surface materials, being the first people in the UK to offer a sheet light weight hollow-core board solution and surface finishes such as BioCote Quartz, the first commercially available anti-microbial sheet material. We wanted to continue this innovative approach and address an area of the market that we had never been near before – that is the manufacture and supply of a range of specialised deco-rative and high performance products available without commitment to bulk quantities and deliverable from single sheets up to full load quantities – from stock. “It is our intention to offer exactly what the brand says, a limitless offer of surface finishes bonded to the substrate of choice, available in quantities as low as one sheet. We will of course have some products that will form a core range within the dp-limitless offer including; high pressure laminates from two of the worlds most recognised producers, the full range of Senoplast acrylics, 2mm Senoplast Acrylglass, Real Stone Veneer, Faux Leather, Wood Veneer, Technical surfaces, and of course, one-off, oneof-a-kind surfaces. It has always been our intention to be able to offer absolutely everything within the field of lamination, dp-limitless along with our existing brands gives us the final piece in the jigsaw.” For ideas and inspiration, arrange a visit to the impressive Decorative Panels Group marketing suite to see the brand new dp-limitless display. 01484 658341 decorativepanels.co.uk

Medite deliver on innovation and quality

© Richard Baker Furniture

As acknowledged as a pioneer in its field, Medite is used to breaking boundaries. With a legacy going back over 40 years, the company’s ideas are as fresh now as they were when Medite first broke into Europe. Before 1976, medium density fibreboard (MDF) was unknown in Western Europe. In that year, Medite made its first shipments to this side of the Atlantic. Now, over 12,000,000m3 of MDF is sold annually in Europe. Medite is Europe’s leading brand of MDF, recognised as a benchmark for quality, consistency and performance. Medite has changed perceptions of timber products and led to a revolution in design, construction, and related applications, including furniture, mouldings, shopfitting and the home improvement market. This same vision has allowed Medite to lead the market in technical innovation, introducing such advances as moisture-resistant, flame-retardant, exterior grade, zero-added

The Medite facility in Clonmel

formaldehyde and flooring-quality MDF varieties. Thanks to this policy of continuous innovation, the Medite range is constantly updated and re-profiled to provide relevant solutions to users’ changing needs. Medite probably spends more time listening to, talking and working with specifiers and end users than any other MDF manufacturer. This keeps the company in touch with the markets of tomorrow. It also means that today’s Medite users benefit from technical support that it believes to be unrivalled in the industry. Currently, the production of Medite takes, as its raw material, over 200,000 tonnes of forest thinnings from its own sustainable forestry industry resources. The Medite manufacturing facility in Clonmel, Ireland is one of the world’s largest and is designed to produce over 400,000m3 per annum. But the company is not stopping there. An intensive, multi-million euro investment programme in production technology and in research and development is in place

to keep Medite at the cutting edge for the 21st century. Medite has been highly commended at the Sustainable Energy Awards 2016 in the large energy category. The event, which took place in November, brings together leading innovators and companies that demonstrate a proven track record of going beyond best practice in integrated energy management. This award, in part, is a result of the Medite Smartply Operation Excellence programme that began in 2013. The programme initiatives consisted of product and process flow optimisation, variable speed drive monitoring, controls, lighting, ISO 50001 certification, electric transport, and a steam turbine generating onsite electricity driven by its own biomass steam boiler. In addition to demonstrating excellence in energy, Medite also remains at the forefront of technical development with the industry shaping Medite Tricoya Extreme Durable MDF – a product that combines all the design flexibility and working benefits of regular MDF, but with a guarantee in use externally of up to 50 years! This ground-breaking product undergoes a proprietary process of acetylation to physically alter the structure of the wood fibres, therefore making them resistant to decay. This process also makes the board incredibly stable dimensionally, therefore increasing decoration intervals of up to 10-12 years. A real groundbreaking product! It’s been a long time in the making, but the company’s reputation for innovation, consistency, customer focus, and above all quality, is as strong now as it’s ever been. 01322 424900 mdfosb.com

Ex-stock range offers with a great deal of choice Tactile textures and warm woodgrains are high on the design list for furniture manufacturers and designers, as the current interiors trend focuses heavily on mixing materials and colours. There is a diversity of styles that are fashionable, ranging from the Scandi-look with lighter woods to richer woodgrains with grey base tones. For furniture and interior projects the appeal of woodgrains is that they combine so readily with a wide range of colours, from simple white to organic hues. Grey in all its shades is the design colour of the moment and this is spurring the development of woodgrains with a complementary base tone which can create sophisticated interiors with kitchen cabinetry, office and hotel furniture, as well as in retail and leisure environments. The One World Collection of decorative panel products from Swiss Krono offers an extended palette of over 250 designs, with more than 30 woodgrains which are completely attuned to these trends. One World also includes the innovative Touch range, with the latest registered embossed technology which expertly recreates the natural look and feel of real wood and stone. The overall aesthetics of any project are important and for panel products to deliver realism and high performance, sophistication of printing and texture is crucial. Swiss Krono has invested heavily in its advanced inline registered printing and perfectly matched surface texture embossing. Six surface textures are available, each in many different tones and shades, and every one offering a different tactile look and feel. Each texture is designed to deliver an authentic look by highlighting individual characteristics, graining and tone. All of the One World woodgrains are available as a melamine or a laminate (including all registered embossed décors), with matching ABS edging as standard. They can all be combined with a variety of different substrates including chipboard, MDF of all types (including both fire and water resistant) and compact density fibreboard (CDF). Paul Mullings, export sales director for Swiss Krono, says: “The woodgrains featured in the One World collection have been developed with such an attention to detail that they are hard to tell from the real thing.

Barcelona Walnut from the Swiss Krono One World Collection is a popular choice for kitchen cabinetry and panelling. Its warm grey base tones give it the design flexibility to partner with a wide range of colours and materials “Furniture manufacturers have access to a wealth of design choice that reflects the current trend for the warmth of woodgrains in homes and in commercial settings, with the flexibility to choose from different substrates to suit their manufacturing needs. Plus our decorative panels are made from 100% virgin core which gives them excellent machining results and a perfect finish every time.” The comprehensive One World Collection includes a creative choice of 253 options in total, drawing inspiration from its international markets. One World brings together the most popular décors from around the world, with a wide selection of new designs and surface textures in metallics, abstracts, concretes and plain colours in addition to woodgrains. The One World Collection is exclusively available in the UK through International Decorative Surfaces (IDS) which has 13 branches nationwide. With its extensive stockholding and rapid product availability, it is geared to meet the just-in-time needs of furniture manufacturers. Each of the décors is available in five working days from order and has no minimum order

quantity, offering unrivalled flexibility. IDS is also holding the most popular-selling décors, plus a selection of bespoke designs, ex-stock which can be delivered to a customer’s door in just 24-48 hours. Dave Huggins, business development director for panel products at IDS, says: “IDS has a 35year distribution partnership with Swiss Krono and their products are renowned for being exceptional to machine with and for producing a superior finish. The One World Collection brings together everything that is good about Swiss Krono in terms of design, innovation and quality and we are delighted to be working with them to service furniture customers in the UK.” To allow furniture manufacturers to see and feel the quality of all the products in One World, Swiss Krono has produced a premium quality Design Box for the collection. This includes three distinct swatch fans for woodgrains, colours and metallics to see and appreciate every décor, plus a lifestyle brochure and fold-out swatch chart offering the full range to view. 08457 298298 idsurfaces.co.uk

SCA Timber Supply UK celebrates health and safety awareness SCA Timber Supply UK has been busy celebrating the recent Health and Safety Awareness this week in an event organised by the wider SCA Group. The week of safety action across the entire group aimed to raise awareness of safe working practices and its safety first culture in order to drive down workplace accidents. The SCA Group is a leading global hygiene and forest products company. The group develops and produces sustainable personal care, tissue and forest products. With sales conducted in about 100 countries the group has about 44,000 employees. SCA Timber Supply UK comprises of three business streams located over four sites – Stoke, Welshpool, Melton and Cumbernauld. They supply a range of timber and associated products to the home improvement and building material sector. Several activities have taken place across all four of SCA’s UK sites with the main focus on changing behaviours. A Fork Lift Truck (FLT) awareness activity provided an opportunity for non-FLT drivers to operate an FLT within a safe environment. Safety walks were conducted by senior management visiting from Sweden and the UK to identify any risks or hazards that could cause an accident. Fresh fruit was provided at all sites to encourage staff to eat healthily. SCA also issued goody bags to all colleagues. Each bag contained a pedometer, Safety First

Reface Scotland gains an edge on the competition with new Brandt Highflex 1230 from Homag UK

The Brandt Highflex 1230 easyTouch edgebander – increased quality and productivity for Reface Scotland Reface Scotland has more than 25 years of skills and experience in bedroom and kitchen transformations. Initially the company specialised in making quality custom-made kitchen cabinets. When fitting kitchens it became apparent that fitters were constantly forced to throw away perfectly serviceable existing units, most of them high quality items with many years of life left in them. This is when the idea of recycling these units was thought of and the ‘refacing’ focus was established for the business. Since then, the world has become more eco-

conscious and, as a company, Reface evaluates the waste produced at its manufacturing plant to ensure it is, if at all possible, recycled. Today, Reface Scotland has grown to become the market leader in kitchen refacing. The company manufactures in its own facility, allowing it to keep a close eye on quality as well as offer unrivalled flexibility. Reface’s carcasses are hand made and engineered to the highest quality with a thickness of 18mm rather than the common 15mm. “Our old edgebander was costing us time and money,” explains Malcolm Graham, production manager for Reface Scotland. He continues: “We used it for eight hours a day and it kept breaking down. It wasn’t delivering the standard of results the business needed and we felt that given the cost of repairs and downtime, a new machine would be more cost effective and quickly pay for itself. “Many members of staff at Reface have been in the industry for over 40 years and during that time German engineering has always been second to none in terms of quality and excellence. So when it came to drawing up a shortlist of companies to talk to about a replacement, Homag was top of our list. The corner rounding unit on the Brandt 1230 “In terms of Highflex was essential for Reface Scotland what we needed

FP278.indd 23

the new edgebander to do, corner rounding was essential. We also wanted a machine that we could set up quickly and do fast edge changeovers to improve productivity.” Brandt Highflex 1230 – impressive speed with excellent quality and reliability “Although we looked at other brands, nothing came close to the all-round superiority of the Brandt Highflex 1230 which we saw demonstrated at AWMS Engineering, the official agents for the Homag Group in Scotland. “Once we’d ordered the machine, everything went very smoothly. The delivery was spot on time and the machine was installed in less than a day. The installation engineer, Andrew Carson, also trained our team on the Brandt, doing an excellent job here in our factory. “Since the Highflex 1230 has been commissioned, I can’t speak too highly about its performance. The machine is absolutely reliable and does everything we had hoped it would. As a consequence of installing the edgebander, there has been a significant improvement in both quality and productivity. With the Highflex we can easily produce all our flat doors in-house, including high gloss finish styles.” Quick payback “The Brandt Highflex 1230 is the first machine the company has bought from Homag, but I’m sure it won’t be the last. We’ve had the edgebander for just over six months now and it has been totally reliable and truly cost effective. “Unlike its predecessor, we can run the Brandt for seven or eight hours a day, with absolutely no issues or concerns. Given this level of productivity, our expectation is that the Highflex 1230 will have easily paid for itself within two years,” concludes Malcolm Graham. For more information or a demonstration of any of the Brandt range of edgebanders, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

In the section Segmented Belts, Klingspor offers the abrasive paper PS 38 G ACT and the abrasive cloth CS 538 Z ACT. Both are special products for the wood-based material industry and eminently suitable for sanding particle boards, oriented strand boards / wafer boards and fibre boards. Those woodbased materials arose from the idea of using wood more efficiently. Wood-based materials today are very important in the whole wood industry. Constant development of the materials also places increased demands on the quality and performances of abrasives. And after all, sanding is the processing step that gives surfaces the decisive finish.

26 SANDING & FINISHING

www.furnitureproduction.net

Educating with wide belts Abrasives have been designed from the ground up to provide users in a wide variety of industries with a product that is suitable for multiple applications. However, with the evolution of wide belt sanders and the increasing number of businesses adding them to their workshop, abrasive manufacturers are working on providing a range products that meets the demands of the jobs, while also engaging with the user to educate them on what is available on the market and how the abrasives will assist their business’ short, medium and long term goals regarding productivity, efficiency and profitability. Previously, there was a time when one belt in the workshop covered a multitude of applications. However, those days are long gone, but there is still demand for the universal semi-open coat belts for hardwoods and softwoods, although these are slowly decreasing as the market place demands a variety of alternative finishes to wood and lacquer. This evolution has led to the belts becoming as important as the most hi-tech pieces of machinery and, over the last five years, Mirka has challenged the status quo with a range of innovative products:

Abranet Max belt

Ultimax

Abranet Max Gold

FP278.indd 26

Abranet Max Gold, and in use in a machine • Ultimax abrasive belts are manufactured using a pioneering production process called ‘Selective Coating’ technology. The belts feature a series of tiny cavities that are designed into the abrasive to prevent clogging. This innovative technology works alongside the special abrasive grain to produce a material that delivers aggressive performance with excellent edge wear resistance, while keeping the sanding surface cool. • Abranet Max is a universal product suited to a broad variety of sanding applications. Due to its net structure, it does not easily clog up on resinous wood types or soft materials and the sanded surface stays cooler and avoids burning. The tough aluminium oxide grain delivers a high cut rate on harder wood types and materials. The symmetric net structure enables an efficient cut and stock removal. Lower pressure is needed and a more consistent surface finish means minimal quality variations in the process when sanding. • Gold MAX’s blue fired aluminium oxide grains enable it to achieve a high cut rate even on harder paints. Its innovative anti-static E-paper provides the abrasive with added strength and stability to offer efficient sanding and a smooth surface finish while the semi-open coating minimises the dust loading on the abrasive so that it can be used on a variety of intermediate and fine sanding applications. Pete Sartain, national sales manager of Mirka UK, comments: “These innovative products can be traced back to the R&D department in Jeppo, Finland. This is the hub for the development of all

Mirka’s lines. The team is never complacent and is always looking at the next steps the industry will take. “As a business, we have a dynamic system where we can feedback the success stories and work we do with customers, which will assist them in in the development process moving forward, while also providing them with a clear idea as to what specific requirements there are for the markets worldwide, which allows Mirka to stay as the market leader within multiple industries. “These procedures ensure that each piece of information collected is available to use in the formation of innovation abrasive technologies that provide the versatility and high quality finish the Mirka brand has become synonymous with. “Businesses are investing large sums of money in hi-tech finishing machinery, the abrasive belts are a vital part of the sanding process within the machine, they contribute to streamlining the production process, while providing a consistent high end finish and an extended life span, which in turn reduces product down time and potentially increases the profitability of the business.” Pete adds: “I would urge end users to contact Mirka regarding finishing solutions we are happy to offer on-site technical expertise from our team of sales people to ensure that businesses are matched with the correct tools for the job. We can visit a site and provide a full written report detailing current products and processes along with recommendations to change and simple process charts to ensure the workforce all follow the same process this ensures that business’ productivity is on a par with what is expected from the tools in use. “We know that not all sanding belts are the same and long gone are the days when the weight of paper and grain type were the only options available. We all know the cheapest option is rarely the most economical, and a better finish, longer life and uninterrupted production are key factors when considering the right belt to use.” mirka.com

Saving time and improving quality with Felder

The team at Burlanes Interiors have improved quality and become more efficient Burlanes Interiors, founded five years ago and managed by owner Danny Wood, design and create bespoke handmade interiors of the highest quality in Essex and Kent including free-standing kitchens, bespoke bathroom design, home offices and handmade furniture. Burlanes Interiors offer a bespoke, personal design service to consult you throughout the process, helping you plan your unique interiors whilst their workshop team bring your project to life before delivering and fitting your completed bespoke interior. Every item of furniture is crafted in their Kent workshop using only the finest materials, traditional techniques and a range of Felder Machinery. Last year Burlanes Interiors decided to improve its workshop, reducing the time it takes to produce its bespoke furniture and increasing the quality of the work by purchasing four new Felder machines. The company specified a Felder FW 950 Classic widebelt sander, a Format-4 kappa 400 x-motion sliding table panel saw, a Felder G 330 edgebander, and a Hammer FS spindle moulder. Danny Wood says: “One of the main reasons I chose to buy from Felder was the ability to buy all of the high quality machinery we needed from a single supplier. “We have invested in Felder machinery to make sure that our customers’ furniture is of the highest quality it can possibly be. The machines we bought all work well together and the finish we can achieve from the FW 950 classic is second to none”.

Not surprising really, as the company has been producing widebelt sanders for over 70 years, and with over 1000 installations in the UK, a satisfied Boere customer is never very far away. Boere are one of the few specialist producers of sanding machines left, whilst others have been diluted into groups, Boere still remains a family company producing only sanding machines. Boere not only produce machines for wood they also offer machines for metal, rubber, foam and plastics. When you ask Paul Boot Boere sales manager what is the success of the Dutch company his reply is simple “We produce very good quality machines, that’s all we do, every day” The design of all Boere machines is based on four basic rules, the machine should be strong and reliable, not expensive to maintain and easy to operate. “We want our machines to operate for decades not years.” adds Paul “With great customer service, we don’t want our customers waiting for service when they need us” Boere are distributed by Calderbrook Woodworking Machinery Ltd in the UK, who have a network of specialist trained engineers on Boere machines. Tony Hoyle managing director has been selling Boere machines for over 40 years “I installed the first Boere sander brought into the UK” he says “in 1974, and it’s still in and working!” One of the major leaps forward by Boere in the last 10 years has been the introduction of new technology Tony explained, “We have technology where needed, no fancy gimmicks that are not necessary. The touchscreen V8 control is easy to use very graphic much like a modern tablet, it gives a platform to run basic machines and add modules for options for more complicated machines such as segmented pads etc. Another popular addition welcomed by the users is the Vision Window and LED lighting,” the operator can really see what is going on in the machine and understand the process.” adds Tony. “its no longer a magic box!!”

For almost 70 years, the Bütfering brand has stood for high performance wide-belt sanding machines and innovative surface finishing.

The all-new Bütfering SWT 200 Series sanding machines – compact high performance The all new Bütfering SWT 200 Series carries on that tradition offering highly flexible and compact sanding solutions. Machines in the range efficiently perform calibration and fine sanding of solid wood and wooden materials as well as veneer and lacquer sanding up to full panel widths of 1350mm. The Bütfering SWT 200 Series models are all constant pass line machines which means the feed table height is constant providing a more heavy-duty and reliable solution. Each machine in the range is controlled via a 7in colour touchscreen with a user-friendly graphic interface. As with all Bütfering machines the attention to detail is extremely high, for example, the machines have earthing straps to eliminate static which can have a negative impact on dust extraction and sanding performance. Advanced workpiece thickness measuring The machines all feature automatic thickness adjustment from 3-200mm (previously 150mm) and a constant working height (900mm) via adjustment of the upper frame of the machine. Workpieces are fed into the machine on a variable speed (3-15m/min), high quality multi-ply conveyor belt. The parts are guided through the machine with spring-loaded rubberised pressure rollers positioned close to the sanding heads.

Twin-head R + C configuration on the SWT 225 RC

Designed for flat surfaces, the combination L-Head uses a contact roller for calibration and an air cushion sanding pad system (acp) for fine sanding applications. This pneumatic pressure pad system delivers the right pressure over the entire working width. In the same way, the combination C-Head Comprehensive selection of head types The SWT 200 Series offers a choice of four heads also features a contact roller for calibration but with the addition of the electronic pneumatic which can be specified in single and twin head pad system (eps) for sanding. The machines’ configurations to give seven different machine electronics ensure the optimum sanding types. All the heads feature a simplified head pressure on all areas of a workpiece. locking system which enables quick and simple The pressure pad consists of separate changing of sanding belts. segments which are applied to match the workpiece shape. Offering thickness tolerance compensation of up to 2mm, the system is perfect for intermediate and fine sanding of solid wood, along with veneer and lacquer sanding. The R-Head has been designed for calibration and preparation of surfaces to provide a mechanical key for gluing. It is very efficient with high stock removal rates whilst avoiding the The new BÜTFERING SWT 225 so called ‘wash-out’ Optimat – compact high performance effect.

Oscillation marks are a thing of the past A new addition is the inclusion of an H-Head which leaves no oscillation (snake) marks and sands at lower temperatures to increase the lifetime of the sanding belt. Featuring a chevron belt, the H-Head delivers a smooth and extremely consistent surface finish making it most suitable for veneer, lacquer and filler sanding. It also offers a wide range of useful grit sizes up to P1200 grit. Quick change brush system A useful option for the SWT 200 series is the quick change cassette brush system with cleaning and texturing brushes available. The glazing brush is recommended to smooth and to emphasise pores on lacquered surfaces whilst the wire brushes create that in-vogue weathered or distressed look. “Yet again, with the SWT 200 Series, Bütfering has come up with a great range of machines,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for Homag UK. He continues: “Whilst it may not look that different from the outside, the engineers at Bütfering have started with a clean sheet to ensure that every little detail of this powerful wide-belt sander is perfect. “Taking this fresh approach has enabled them to create a flexible, reliable, high quality sander all within a very compact footprint. The range and combinations of heads to choose from allows every machine to be tailored to each customer’s specific needs and I am certain demand for this SWT 200 Series will be high,” concludes Simon. 01332 856500 homag-uk.co.uk

Viet sander, the smooth choice for high-end joinery An historic joinery business has installed a Viet wide belt sander as part of its commitment to the continual improvement of product quality. J Seamer & Son can trace its origins back to 1875, making it one of Britain’s longestestablished joinery businesses. The extremely successful company is owned by managing director Richard Latham, who joined the firm as an apprentice joiner in 1981 and acquired the company after the last member of the Seamer family retired in 2014. A team of highly skilled joiners at the Derby factory produces a wide range of handcrafted bespoke pieces, everything from fine furniture to windows and doors, for domestic and commercial customers. Seamers may be over 140 years old, but its success is due partly to the fact that it makes full use of the latest woodworking technology throughout the manufacturing process. Richard Latham says: “Because we produce joinery for the very top end of the market we are always looking to maintain and improve our product quality, which as far as I am concerned means investing in the very best woodworking machinery available.” Its new Viet S1 sander is delivering the twin advantages of improved sanding quality and time saving. The sander is used for finishing both softwoods and hardwoods, chiefly oak, walnut and mahogany, as well as sanding veneered boards to extremely fine tolerances. The S1 is a popular and well-proven 1350mm twin-head wide-belt machine that offers a winning combination of high precision, versatility and a tough build quality to give it a long working life. It’s the ideal sander for use where high levels of throughput are required at an affordable cost with its two sanding heads making it the perfect choice for both calibrating and fine sanding.

Seamer’s Viet S1 wide-belt sander is delivering improved quality.

FP278.indd 38

The Viet S1 sander at J Seamer & Son Featuring a thick anti-wear steel work bed that guarantees precision for any job, it has a wide range of sanding units allowing customisation to suit a range of applications. There’s a choice of push button or touch screen controls with automatic positioning for thickness setting, while adjustable pressure rollers guarantee the stability of items placed on the work bed. Richard Latham says: “We had bought a Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw from TM Machinery, which we were extremely pleased with, so when I learned that they also handled the Viet range I talked to them about the sanders. After having a demonstration we decided to look no further and ordered the S1. This was the model most suited to our line of business and was in line with the budget we had to spend.” He said he was delighted that the Viet has lived up to its reputation for delivering a consistently high quality of sanding and calibration, as well as being a valuable time saver. Other models in the Viet artisan range include the entry-level S211, the perfect solution for

workshops looking for an efficient wide-belt sander to handle low to medium volume calibration and sanding applications. The S2, which features three sanding heads, offers outstanding flexibility in a single machine. Described as the ultimate in surface finishing, the addition of an extra sanding head allows for more sanding elements to be combined. This enables users to obtain the most suitable configuration for difficult applications or for multiple applications to be carried out on the same machine. Viet’s latest Opera model is described as a modular finishing centre with up to six heads which offers unrivalled customisation. The Opera delivers the ultimate technological solution to today’s demands for faster and more complex processing needs. Machines can be fully customised depending on individual requirements and deliver a constant high finish product quality coupled with outstanding productivity. 0116 271 7155 tmmachinery.co.uk

Exhibition company turns to WWT for replacement heater Exhibition company DD Exhibitions needed to find a replacement wood waste heater when its existing one started to fail, so looked to find a different manufacturer that had a reputation for quality and reliability. The team at DD Exhibitions did some research into new wood waste heaters, and liked the excellent reviews on the products designed and manufactured in the UK by Wood Waste Technology. With its current wood waste heater failing, the team was especially pleased to hear that all the wood waste heaters ever sold by Wood Waste Technology are still operational today. The North-west company, which creates exhibition stands and other display solutions from various woods, including MDF and plywood, desperately needed to replace its old, redundant wood waste heater, due to the amount of waste wood generated from manufacturing client exhibitions stands. With winter approaching, a new heater was also needed to help warm the team working in the

20,000ft2 workshop. Following a quote and site survey, the business ordered a WT15 heater that was quickly and easily installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Project manager at DD Exhibitions, Melissa Colton, explains: “We’ve been so impressed with our new heater, the service we’ve received and the benefits we’re experiencing. The wood waste heater is very easy to use, keeps the workshop warm, and saves us a large amount of money on waste disposal. The whole purchase and installation has been hassle free, and we’re delighted that we’ve got a great product, with fantastic service, at a good price.” Managing director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “Once a business experiences how much money can be saved using biomass technology, they don’t ever want to lose those benefits. We’re delighted that DD Exhibitions selected Wood Waste Technology to provide its replacement wood waste heater, so they can once again enjoy free

heating in the workshop and lower waste disposal bills.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official

distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

Alphacam – Felder’s preferred CAD-CAM solution for complex programming

Woodworking machinery specialists Felder UK are partnering with Alphacam software and cutting tool specialists to give customers a preferred one-stop solution for all CNC machining needs. Chief executive Matthew Applegarth says its Format 4 branded CNC machines are supplied with proprietary Woodflash software which is an ideal introduction to CNC machining, for creating simple programs and basic cabinet panels. “But as we’ve expanded our CNC range, we’ve seen the need for more advanced software to provide our customers’ complex programming and nesting solutions. And this is done through Alphacam. We consider ourselves to be an

FP278.indd 48

industry leader for CNC machining centres, and as Alphacam is part of the world’s number one CAM vendor, Vero Software, we know it’s a proven CAD-CAM solution used extensively in the UK woodworking market, so the partnership works very well.” Felder also collaborates with cutting tool suppliers Leitz UK and Cruing. “As Leitz tools are of the highest quality they’re ideal for our machines. And Cruing’s Aerotech tool is perfect for nesting, providing a good solution for panel production. Overall, this three-way combination of machine tool, cutting tool and software, gives our customers the best overall package from just one supplier.” Operating out of recently refurbished 20,000ft2 premises in Milton Keynes, Felder UK provides a wide range of machinery in addition to CNC, including bandsaws, panel saws, spindle moulders, edgebanders, planer-thicknessers and material handling solutions. Felder’s customer base is predominantly involved in furniture and panel production – fitted furniture and kitchen suppliers, through to cabinet makers for intricate and fine furniture, and general joinery companies making staircases, doors and windows. The CNC range starts with the small H08 1325 8x4 flatbed router for three-axis machining, going up to the H10 heavy industrial machines with automatic loading, offloading and through-feed

production, along with three-, four- and five-axis pod and rail machining centres. And it offers Alphacam as the preferred CAD-CAM solution across all levels. Matthew Applegarth says they have had “a great deal of success” with providing each of the three Alphacam modules – Essential, Advanced and Ultimate – as part of a complete package which also includes tooling, giving the customer a onestop-shop solution. “It means furniture companies can really hit the ground running when investing in a CNC machine from us, rather than having to go to the CAD-CAM and tooling vendors separately.” CNC product manager Richard Hird says customers who are new to Alphacam undertake training on both the software and the machine, and quickly learn the simple technique for importing different file types and getting them ready for machining. “Then, on a day-to-day basis, many of our customers will have a concept or idea from their own customers as what they need to design, create and manufacture for them. Once the file is imported into Alphacam they simply put the toolpaths on, along with all the information needed for machining, and it then goes straight through as a TCN file all ready to run on the Format 4.” felder-group.co.uk verosoftware.com alphacam.com

Celebrations for JJ Smith at W16 This year’s woodworking machinery and materials exhibition, W16, marked a series of milestones for JJ Smith employees. The familyrun woodworking machinery supplier, which is now in its third generation, presented three members of staff with a long-standing service award to celebrate their continually commitment to the business. Kevin McGlone and Alan Reid, who are both celebrating 40 years with the business this year, were first to receive thanks from managing director, Martin Smith. “I never thought I’d be celebrating 40 years of service when I started at the company in 1976,” explains Alan. “It’s a huge achievement and I’m very proud to

be part of the team.” Kevin adds: “It certainly doesn’t feel like we’ve been with the company for 40 years. I think I’ve got another 40 years left in me.” Paul Parker was also presented with an award for 25 years of service. Paul says: “I started on a trainee scheme in the late 80s. The team took me under their wing and I’ve never looked back. Here’s to many more years to come!” Martin adds: “JJ Smith is a family business and it’s our mission to continue training and investing in the next generation. Our long-term commitment to our employees can be seen here today. We’re proud to have such loyal staff working within our team and it is fitting to mark their career milestones on our W16 stand. Well done team.”

Liam Martin wins W Challenge Bristol-based woodworking apprentice, Liam Martin, 19, has been crowned the winner of W16’s very first woodworking and joinery competition, the W Challenge. Run by training provider, Didac, the talented finalist was given four-days to follow a strict brief that would see him and three further students put their skills to the test to create a curved door panel. The brief, which was kept under wraps until the first day of the competition, was designed to challenge the students and get them to use a wide range of skills that they had learnt during their apprenticeship training. The judging process – which was headed by BWF’s Dave Campbell and Didac supervisors, Paul Stevenson and Shane Stenning – looked at the whole manufacturing

FP278.indd 50

process and assessed the students throughout the competition. Sean explains: “Whilst the students understanding of the brief was a crucial factor, they were also marked on their house keeping skills. Safety, time management, conservation of timber and planning were all essential and marked accordingly. Each finalist had to show their efficiency in the work place and meet the brief in its entirety. It was a big ask but after seeing them in the heat stages, we knew they were more than capable.” Shane adds: “The camaraderie between the finalists was brilliant and the skill set was very high but Liam maintained a high level of accuracy throughout the competition. He was very proactive and had a clear plan from start to finish. We couldn’t fault his work and I wouldn’t think twice about employing him. Liam has a very bright future ahead of him.” On winning the competition, Liam adds: “Curved work is always a challenge and you have to be painstakingly accurate. If you don’t follow the measurements to the millimeter, your design won’t work. The brief wasn’t easy but I concentrated on the job in hand and I’m so pleased I won. I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet!”

Record Cabinet Vision and Alphacam Sales at W16

“Alphacam can make our machine sing… Cabinet Vision has transformed our business… We can very quickly and easily supply cabinetry exactly to our customers’ specifications…” Those are comments from just a few of the hundreds of visitors to the Vero Software stand at W16. Over 340 strong leads were taken across the two brands, and both of them reported record sales, with Cabinet Vision and Alphacam signing orders with new customers not known to them before the show. Cabinet Vision Product Business Manager Marie Cassidy says visitors went to the stand with specific queries and looking for specific solutions. “They were interested in the number of different applications that the software can be used for…and the fact that their designs can be integrated seamlessly with virtually any machine on the market.” And Michael Pettit, Alphacam’s EMEA Sales Manager, says: “Behind every efficient CNC machine is a good CAM system – and Alphacam is that system for woodworking companies who want to exploit the full potential of their machine tools.” Alphacam works closely with a number of machinery OEMs, and W16 was the perfect venue to show manufacturers how those partnerships work in the ‘real world,’ with several joint live demonstrations. Both brands used W16 to highlight features in their forthcoming releases – with Cabinet Vision showing Material Manager and Screen to Machine links for quick and easy solutions to producing machine-ready code; and Alphacam focusing on its ability to optimise and automate CNC programming to increase a company’s productivity. “While CNC routers are now commonplace in woodworking companies, they

are under-utilised in a lot of cases, due to the inability to program efficiently,” says Michael Pettit. “Alphacam is a powerful and easy-to-use tool, enabling manufacturers to fully exploit the potential of their CNC investment.” He says considerable interest was shown in Alphacam’s automation tools for automatically processing CAD files, whether 2D or solid parts and assemblies. “Many joinery companies use more than one CAD system, and want Alphacam to be the CAM link to their CNC machines.” For Cabinet Vision, Marie Cassidy says W16 is a significant exhibition, showcasing them amongst all the machinery brands, and reinforcing their position as part of the Vero Software stable – the world’s number one CAM vendor. “There were live demonstrations on the show floor, with machinery partners recommending us and directing their customers to us.” Additional visitor comments about Cabinet Vision: “I didn’t know Cabinet Vision could do that” (during a demonstration showing its ability to move cabinet parts and operations dynamically); “Cabinet Vision makes changing our manufacturing style very easy – we can change from assembled cabinets to flat pack furniture with one click, with no mistakes.” Additional visitor comments about Alphacam: “I’ve been using Alphacam for 25 years, and we’d be out of business without it”; “We have a number of CNC machines from different suppliers and Alphacam allows us to be extremely flexible with respect to which machine we choose to run. The Alphacam file can be exported to any machine depending on capacity at that given time”; “We’ve had a CNC for years, but we only really started using it when we got Alphacam.” verosoftware.com

Make room for Kindred Bedrooms Kindred Living, a new company within the Danesmoor Group, has launched Kindred, a complete bedroom furniture brand that aims to redefine the fitted bedroom offer to be simpler, more flexible and relevant for today’s ever-more demanding consumer. Kindred sits alongside other brands in the Group within PWS Distributors Ltd. Borne out of two years’ research and product development, Kindred recognised the need to challenge the out-of-date fitted bedroom market to offer retailers a more commercial range entirely focused on modern consumers. Crucial to the collection is the ability to create flexible designs that suit real room footprints and thus deliver immense versatility within the range. This in turn allows varying room shapes and sizes to align seamlessly with the look and style consumers demand. Comments David Burchnall, director at Kindred: “Kindred has been robustly researched to deliver a highly commercial bedroom furniture collection that perfectly matches the discerning tastes of the modern consumer. We have challenged the application of fitted furniture within realistic and typical rooms in British homes, introducing free-standing chests alongside fitted robes to offer an extensive and extremely adaptable range of furniture combinations. “Kindred will bring significant sales opportunities for retailers, and judging from the incredibly positive and enthusiastic response to the recent unveiling of the brand at our Northern Design Centre in Co Durham, it is exactly what the market has been waiting for.” The Kindred portfolio unites form and function, featuring a carefully conceived balance of door styles, with four modern and two classic designs. The colour palette is timeless, yet on trend, and in the classic portfolio includes partridge grey, porcelain and stone in a painted woodgraineffect finish with anthracite, cashmere, dove grey and white in the modern offer, in gloss and mattpainted options. To further personalise contemporary schemes,

Sculpt Anthracite and Heritage Stone

feature doors in glass, mirror or walnut are available while the classic collection includes matching or accent oak chest of drawer tops for further tailoring and customisation. A clever, flexible internal accessory range will maximise storage plus a lighting offer with a choice of 40 handles adding the finishing touches to the design. Quality is at the core of Kindred. The product is manufactured in Italy with premium finishes, supported with a five year warranty.

The sales and branding message for Kindred is simple. The ranges are structured and easy to understand. There is a transparent pricing strategy, including RRPs, that is both easy to work with and competitive. Kindred has the family home at its heart, designed to engage the consumer to buy into the brand values with a focus on real-life scenarios that instil a sense of trust, reliability and pride. Kindred is backed with a full suite of marketing materials, including; lifestyle literature, website, technical manual and display offers. The Kindred customer services team is on hand and ordering is easy whether online, by email, phone or fax. The collection is supported with Articad and EQ CAD catalogue packages. Ex-stock from a new, dedicated 25,000ft2 warehouse, Kindred is readily-available, so much so, if required, the design, order, delivery and installation can realistically be achieved within a week. kindred.co.uk 01325 329000

New tesa tape enhances mounting applications tesa® has introduced a new double sided tape for mounting applications that offers a powerful bonding solution for interior trims, especially those made of wood. Investment decision further vindicated When the decision was made to purchase two Hoffmann machines to add to The Port Gallery’s machine portfolio collection, the business owners instinctively knew that they had made the right choice. Its Hoffmann MS35 double mitre saw trims two clean precision mitre cuts to an exact length, with the greatest of ease and accuracy in one machine cycle, creating a perfect join for the best quality picture frames. Additionally the Hoffmann MU-2P dovetail router assists with tight and secure dovetail joints especially for deep and floating box frames which can be converted with great speed and efficiency. The Port Gallery at Auchinstarry Marina in Kilsyth is situated near stunning surroundings at the side of the Forth & Clyde Canal and is quickly being recognised as one of the best quality, yet affordable art houses in Scotland. Owned and personally run by John Clelland and his team of Dot, Amy, Lynn and Maureen, it is clear to see their passion for all the art and artists work displayed in beautiful quality frames. John Clelland says: “The new equipment will allow us to streamline and create speed and efficiency in our rapidly-extending workshop without compromising quality. We are all very excited what we can offer to our customers as we strive to extend our service. “The back-up and support that we have received from Hoffmann director, John Galvin, has been superb. John commissioned both machines and fully demonstrated their capabilities. “The quality of workmanship is unsurpassed, giving us a leading edge as a recognised player in the production of the best quality picture frames in Scotland.” The Port Gallery, which is a member of the Fine Arts Guild, displays a variety of original paintings and prints by talented local artists and its giftware, Yankee candles and handmade greetings cards have been immensely popular. Gallery owner Dorothy Clelland says: “We have created great interest from local people and beyond as we offer an extensive range of bespoke products and services which includes personalised gifts, scanning, photography, giclée and banner printing. “The picture framing service has been extremely busy and we have been highly complimented by returning customers. Our client list has soared over the last six months as we continue to receive client recommendations.
