Following on from the Rose Quartz and Serenity duo, the global colour authority, Pantone, has prescribed Greenery 15-0343 as the 2017 colour of the year. This announcement, of course, chimes well with what continues to be the overarching design direction of the last three decades – the beauty and simplicity of natural tones. Since the 1980s, when acid tones, black ash and pop design swept all before them, we have embraced the natural palette with all manner of references from nature, usually with a dynamic twist and highlight colours to keep things fresh. Furniture and interior design now encompasses a myriad of natural shades. From white to the darkest mocha and everything in between, there are countless tones to lay under the highlight colours of the day – and there is none better than apple green. Wood has been the material of choice for design and production since man first started to fashion furniture, and its naturally-restricted palette, with either a clear or coloured finish, remains a mainstay today. This natural beauty has long been mimicked by paper, foil and laminate manufacturers. So, in addition to the enormous variation of natural tones, developments in printing technology and grain-matching capability, the new level of hyper-realistic, coloured woodgrain effects are almost impossible to differentiate from the real thing. The designer’s box of options has never been so plentiful!

First mattress recognised by FIRA for its ergonomics excellence A mattress range developed by AVA Sleep, which is due to launch at the January Furniture Show, is the first to be recognised by FIRA International for its ergonomics excellence. FIRA’s Ergonomic Excellence Award recognises companies that design and manufacture ergonomically outstanding products, especially those that meet and generally exceed the requirements of British and European standards. To achieve the award, products are independently assessed by FIRA’s ergonomics department. Areas of assessment include ergonomic qualities; ergonomic design; whether the product is ergonomically and structurally fit for purpose; level of comfort and wellbeing for the user; compliance with relevant health and safety regulations; and ensuring the manufacturer has high quality standards and a good environmental policy. Speaking on the award, Dr Ilyas Ansari from AVA Sleep says: “It was critically important for AVA Sleep to receive the seal of approval from FIRA for our new Science to Sleep mattress range. The range, which encompasses four collections, is innovative and body-adaptive, offering comfort and support to the user. “Whilst we were all aware internally about the mattresses’ ergonomic performance and benefits, we wanted independent verification and analysis so we could give confidence externally to the consumer. As a result of this award, and independent sleep research from Professor John Groeger at Hull University, our mattresses now stand out within the marketplace. We’re looking forward to the January Furniture Show, where,

Left to right: Levent Calgar, Dr Ilyas Ansari and Phil Reynolds, deputy manager, FIRA after two years in the making, we will launch these ergonomic mattresses to the industry.” Levent Caglar, head of the ergonomics unit at FIRA International, says: “As this was the first mattress to receive FIRA’s Ergonomic Excellence Award, we had to develop new ergonomic criteria for mattress products. When we consider that on average we spend eighthours a night on a mattress we had to ensure the product, and future ergonomic mattresses, would provide users with comfortable sleep and in the longterm help maintain the health of their back. “Dimensions had to ensure consumers could use the mattress comfortably and safely, with anthropometric data supporting tests. In terms of comfort, pressure maps were produced and analysed to check pressure distribution throughout the body, postural analysis was undertaken alongside subjective assessment from users taking part in controlled trials.

“When considering use, we wanted to ensure handles were designed in such a way that 90% of the population could achieve a comfortable and secure grip. For safety, it was critical to ensure mattresses were tested against British Standards for durability and flammability.” AVA Sleep’s Science to Sleep range joins over 30 products with a FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award, spanning desks, IT accessories, task seating and storage holders. Levent continues: “Until now, workplace products have been the main recipients of the FIRA Ergonomics Excellence Award, as focus has traditionally been driven from employers who understand the benefits of ergonomics for workforce health, wellbeing, morale, retention, attendance and productivity. However recently we’ve been seeing a shift to, and more interest from, the domestic market as consumers are seeking ergonomically-designed products within the home. The domestic market can exploit the excellent work of the office sector and FIRA can help manufacturers and designers bridge this gap.” Those within the furniture supply chain who are keen to understand the ergonomic effectiveness of their products, or interested in working with FIRA to develop new best practice standards should email info@fira. co.uk, call 01438 777 700 or visit www.fira.co.uk/ ergonomics – which also includes a list of all current excellence holders. January Furniture Show attendees can see AVA Sleep’s ergonomic Science to Sleep range on stand D70 whilst FIRA, which is a show partner, is on stand B90. fira.co.uk

Positive signals from SICAM A great edition of SICAM ended in Pordenone: four days of intense work for operators coming from 102 countries, a record for the event, crowding the halls and bringing a business atmosphere full of strategic planning in all stands. According to the organiser, over 7000 companies visited, of which, 64% were domestic and the remainder from the rest of the world. The internationality of the trade fair continues to grow and confirming the Made in Italy strategy. It would seem clear that SICAM is becoming a more notable furniture components and accessories event in the calendar. For the 2016 event, SICAM registered an increase in the presence of designers and architects: the 560 exhibiting companies showed a very large range of products. Attractiveness and the value in terms of business relations of the event have been both reconfirmed: the number of applications for 2017 already collected during the show demonstrates this clearly. SICAM 2016 witnessed visits from several countries of continental sub-Saharan Africa and also Middle East were registered, countries representing new frontiers for the next decades.

FP279 V2.indd 4

Germany confirmed itself as a target market once again, ranked first among the foreign visiting countries. Numerous visitors also attended from France and Great Britain, always at the top for the Italian export in the furniture sector. Also buyers and

industry professionals from other emerging countries were again in Pordenone, facing this market thanks to SICAM. The next edition of SICAM will be held in Pordenone October 10-13th, 2017. exposicam.it

Makita UK celebrates 45 years in UK power tool market 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the UK sales, training and distribution centre for global power tool manufacturer Makita Corporation. An unbroken record of annual sales growth confirms that today the Makita brand is market leader in the UK’s competitive professional power tool league. Just two years ago Makita worldwide celebrated a century of growth since the Company’s foundation in 1915 at Anjo, Japan. Since 1972 Makita UK has delivered a consistently successful and ever expanding range of power tools for the professional tradesman. Today, there are more than 600 tools in the Makita UK range and unrivalled innovation has become the hallmark of the brand, constantly improving performance and capability to make many tasks in the construction world more productive, safer for operators, achieving faster, more efficient, completion. Exceptional product innovations such as the valuable AVT™ – Advanced Vibration Technology – which dramatically reduces HAV risks for operators; Brushless motors for cordless tools that increases motor power output, expands run time and lengthens tool and battery life; and the brilliant MM4 mini four-stroke petrol engine that produces more power, consumes less fuel, cuts noise and emissions of grounds maintenance machines, are just three examples of the constant flow of product science and technology that makes Makita the market leader. Today’s Makita range includes cordless

machines which now rival some mains powered variants for impact power and torque. The popular 18v Lithium-Ion battery platform, introduced in 2005, has expanded to more than 110 different products and recently the Twin 18v (36v) machines, powered by two of the ever popular existing 18v batteries, along with a range of domestic and professional cordless garden tools that further expands the powerful cordless range. Pneumatic tools include nailers and staplers whilst there are ever more petrol engine machines for construction and outdoor equipment, and horticultural machines for grounds maintenance and landscape professionals. An equally broad inventory of high quality accessories, such as drill bits, blades, abrasives and diamond cutting wheels, further enhances the ultimate performance of Makita tools. “The Makita philosophy has always been customer service first and foremost and to meet the aspirations of the end user first, then our dealers and then finally us as the manufacturer,” explains Barry Smart, national sales manager, Makita UK. “Our market has evolved since 1972 when it was 100% mains until today where it is 60/40 in favour of cordless machines. Our forecasts are for continued growth in cordless; our Twin battery 36v machines meet end user requirements for power and performance and this is expanding quickly in our horticultural range. Opening our new training and customer service centre in Glasgow is further illustration of

our commitment to giving our customers the very best possible backup to make their business successful.” Makita’s ISO-accredited facility at Telford in Shropshire is one of 18 worldwide production plants. Here more than 1.25 million individual power tools are manufactured annually, of which 80% are exported to the worlds markets. Two further factors are the cornerstones of Makita’s market success in the UK. The establishment and continuous development of the strongest national network of professional distributors, backed by a skilled sales and demonstration force, is coupled with the ethos of correct training. This enables the selection of the most efficient tool for the job and the correct and safe use of the tools in active conditions. This belief is borne out by the major investment in the established training course facility at the Milton Keynes HQ and the new centre in Scotland. makitauk.com

Mitsubishi nominated twice in FLTA awards The Fork Lift Truck Association, the UK’s leading authority on fork lift truck operations, has recognised not one, but two Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks products in its annual Awards for Excellence shortlist. As a finalist in the Safety and Innovation categories for two of its newest products, EDiA EX 80 volt electric and the SENSiA reach truck cold store cabin, Mitsubishi will compete among

many of the industry’s leading names for a highly prized Archie statuette. The manufacturer is not a stranger to accolades like this. Its product design has earned it several red dot design awards for its warehouse and electric ranges and it was the first company to win an Archie in each of the four FLTA product awards categories (Environment, Ergonomics, Safety and Innovation). This year’s finalists were decided by the FLTA Technical Committee, which assesses entrants against the awards’ strict criteria. In the Innovation category, the Mitsubishi EDiA EX has been recognised for its unique steering geometry that delivers four-wheel-drive in even the most demanding of turns. Where a typical forklift may achieve 90° turning by putting exceptionally high pressure on the tyres and rims, the latest EDiA EX 80V, is equipped with counter-rotating drive wheels and unique 100° turn rear axle, mean it can effortlessly turn on a tighter lock than its rivals. Its dual drive allows the truck to smoothly turn within its own dimensions, maximising manoeuvrability, reducing wear and, ultimately, improving safety. Sitting proudly alongside EDiA EX on the FLTA’s prestigious shortlist is the SENSiA cold store reach truck. A finalist in the Ergonomics category, it features the world’s largest and most

EDiA EX’s unique steering geometry impressed the FLTA Nominations Committee efficient cabin. Uniquely, the design features an outwardly curved door profile which delivers spacious accommodation for drivers of all sizes. Generously insulated against noise and vibration, every aspect of the design has focused on ensuring operator space is clear and uncluttered, while keeping controls in easy reach to reduce the risk of driver fatigue. Further driver protection is offered by SENSiA’s revolutionary rest on its fingertip control console. By supporting the operator’s palm – minimising strain on the elbow – it helps eliminate a common source of repetitive strain injury associated with intensive reach truck operations. In addition, the cold store cabin benefits from a unique hi-vis polycarbonate roof that provides excellent upward views while safeguarding operators against falling debris of all sizes. mitsubishi-forklift.co.uk

Hero Award for PWS & Blood Sweat & Gears’ fundraisers Blood Sweat & Gears, the team of endurance cyclists spearheaded by Mark Stephenson, PWS’ chief executive, has been recognised with a Hero Award, thanks to its recordbreaking success. Blood, Sweat and Gears successfully undertook a 500km cycling challenge across South Africa which it was hoped, through sponsorship, would raise £250,000 for Help for Heroes, of which Mark is a long-term supporter. However, thanks to donations, the tally grew to an incredible £314,000, making it the highest amount in 2016 of any singular, third-party fundraising challenge donated to Help For Heroes. In recognition of this phenomenal achievement, Blood, Sweat and Gears has received the Charity’s Hero Award for Extraordinary Teams. The money raised by the team will fund three additional wellbeing advisors over three years for the charity’s psychological wellbeing program. The programme delivers early intervention mental health support for wounded, injured and sick veterans and their families.

The Hero Awards were launched in 2010, by Help for Heroes’ co-founders Bryn and Emma Parry, as a way to thank the extraordinary supporters for voluntarily going above and beyond and giving up their time to assist the charity in delivering life-long support to wounded heroes. Bryn Parry, CEO and co-founder of Help for Heroes said: “For those suffering an injury or illness due to service, their recovery can last a lifetime. Knowing they have remarkable organisations like PWS standing beside them, willing to do amazing things, will make a huge difference on their recovery journeys. Together we are rebuilding lives, so thank you and please keep doing your bit for ‘the blokes’.” Mark was proud to accept a Hero Award in 2013, when he was recognised for his generous donation of four purpose-designed self-help kitchens to Phoenix House, the new Recovery Centre at Catterick and three further kitchens to the Endeavour Recovery Centre at HMS Drake in Plymouth. PWS is committed to ongoing support

The focus of the visits is to offer opportunities to appreciate not only the types of employment available but also to gain a wider understanding of both the differences and similarities between military and civilian employment. bloodsweatandgears.cc helpforheroes.org.uk

New group to promote joinery and fit-out specialists A new Wood Interiors Group to benefit and support those involved with interior joinery products is being launched by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF). The group will discuss the core issues that face the industry and develop solutions for the advantage and promotion of members. Iain McIlwee, BWF chief executive, said: “Studies on timber interiors have shown that wood has many benefits to building occupiers: improvements to our emotional state, reduced blood pressure, heart rate and stress, calmer learning environments and improved air quality through humidity regulation. “The BWF wants to promote these benefits more widely, and to represent the interests of our many members involved in domestic and commercial interior joinery projects. Essentially,

this group brings a bit of focus to our work and will support us growing the use of wood in this arena.” The first meeting of the BWF Wood Interiors Group takes place on 24th January 2017 and will include discussions on business and technical topics such as contract and project management, market analysis, materials and design trends, skills and training, and the best ways to promote the indoor air quality, materials health and sustainability of timber interiors. The meeting will also feature presentations from two distinguished guest speakers, Oliver Heath and Ed Suttie. The meeting will take place in the Michael Rose Room at the Building Centre, from 11am to 3pm. Those who wish to attend the meeting should register their interest by emailing jon.gorf@bwf.org.uk. bwf.org.uk/toolkit/interiors

FANTASTIC-COLOR comes to the UK

In 2016 Hesse Lignal raised the standard once again with the launch of its FANTASTIC-COLOR system. From its stateof-the-art laboratories in Germany, Hesse developed a product that in just one single step uses up to 60% more material applied to vertical surfaces in comparison to other similar coloured lacquer systems. Hesse FANTASTIC-COLOR is a pigmented, light-fast and very well balanced two-component PU acrylic resin lacquer with impressive opacity and a fast drying time. Its increased opacity achieves greater coverage than competitors and a rapid intermediate drying time of two hours is a big step forward in the market place. The product’s particular distinguishing features are its outstanding ability to stay on vertical surfaces together with excellent levelling on horizontal surfaces. The lacquer can be applied directly to MDF edges without using special primers and fillers.

FP279 V2.indd 12

The desired result is therefore achieved much faster, saving both time and effort. What this means for finishing is significantly reduced processing times allowing for greater production but without compromising on quality. Hesse strives to be at the forefront of wood coatings and once more it has surpassed standards for heat, chemical and scratch resistance with the FANTASTIC-COLOR. The company’s lacquers are independently tested and certified, resulting in a system which meets the IMO standard for coatings applicable to sea going vessels as well as Class B1 fire certification. In respect of the wellbeing of the sprayers as well as the end users, Hesse’s FANTASTICCOLOR formulation is free of wood preservatives, toxic heavy metals, phthalate plasticizers, formaldehyde, CMRs category 1A + 1B and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds.

The result is a first class coloured lacquer finish with an impressive feel. Its surface invites the touch and the senses are simultaneously stimulated with colour and smoothness. Following the successful launch of FANTASTIC-COLOR in Europe, Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute the product in the UK. The uniquely close relationship between Hesse and Redwood ensures that customers buying this system have the benefit of strong technical back up. The highly trained staff at Redwood can answers queries on applications over the phone and on site if required. To find out more about FANTASTIC-COLOR and take advantage of Hesse Lignal’s latest technological advancement, contact Redwood Innovations, which is open Monday-Friday from 7.30am – 4.30pm. hesse-lignal.de redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Perfect packaging on demand with the VKS 250 Previous packaging solutions have seen companies mass producing cardboard packaging in large volumes leading to both storage and waste problems. Manufacturers are left either with wasted, unused boxes or struggling to find the considerable volume of storage space needed to hold such stocks. In addition, there tends to be high wastage of cardboard and packaging materials, as often boxes that are too big for the products have to be used with filler materials to provide secure packaging. Not only is this costly and wasteful for the manufacturer, but it also doesn’t create a great first impression with customers. “On-demand box-making machines are not a new concept,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for Homag UK. He continues: “Homag, however, recognised that the packaging machine solutions already available were not sufficiently flexible or technically advanced enough and so it decided to design and produce its own. The resulting machine, the Homag VKS 250 powerTouch, has caused quite a stir in the packaging market.” Perfectly sized packaging The VKS system is controlled with Homag’s powerful powerTouch controller and packaging dimensions can be fed in via either the volumetric scanner, master data (which uses a barcode to gain the product’s dimensions) or manual operator input. The scanner measures the dimensions of

FP279 V2.indd 14

each item which needs to be packaged, this data is then automatically sent to the VKS 250. The system also stores packaging data so various product sizes can be easily retrieved. The VKS 250 then cuts the box to the required size from two-fold cardboard and feeds it to the operator. The operator is then able to assemble the box, position the product inside it and then place it into the gluing machine which securely seals the box. Operators can even specify whether there needs to be a packaging allowance for protective materials such as bubble wrap; the VKS 250 then recalculates the dimensions as necessary. More flexible than ever before The VKS 250 can be operated as a stand-alone box-making machine or used inline to provide an on-demand box-making facility on any production line. With just-in-time production, manufacturing and stock-keeping costs are drastically reduced. Highly flexible, the machine will produce boxes of all sizes, from as small as a 20mm x 20mm x 20mm, up to a 1m x 1m x 10m box. It will process all grades of single and double-wall corrugated board in thicknesses from 2.5mm to 6.5mm. The intelliCut program controls up to six tools, as well as any additional tools, which allow the VKS 250 to handle complex cutting. The VKS 250 can be specified as a sheet or a continuous fan-fold corrugated board-fed machine, whichever the production process demands. The cardboard feeding system offers the

flexibility of using up to eight feeders for quick material changes. Being German-designed and engineered, it is not only robust and reliable, but also very safe. The built-in safety systems mean that operators cannot get too close to areas of potential danger, such as cutting elements, without the machine automatically shutting down until the danger is removed. An essential machine for manufacturers Simon Brooks concludes: “The VKS 250 is an extremely versatile piece of kit; whatever size packaging you need to produce, the VKS 250 will make it. That is what makes it unique. “It provides significant savings in manual labour as the VKS 250 eliminates the need for mass product packing by a team of staff. In addition, there is no requirement for forklift drivers transporting cardboard boxes around the warehouse. “By removing the necessity for manufacturers to stock pre-made packaging and simply producing bespoke cardboard boxes as and when they are needed, it puts cash back into the business. “It also prevents any product or packaging damage whilst saving up to 30% in material usage alone.” For more information or a demonstration of the Homag VKS 250 automated box-cutting machine, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on: 01332 856424 homag-uk.co.uk

Daltons Wadkin finds window of success in the Irish market

The Salvador effect crosses the Irish sea

Damien Grimes (left), mill manager Joost and Declan Grimes (right) with the new Superpush 200 Kells Windows, an award-winning family-run business specialising in the manufacture, reproduction and restoration of periodstyle windows and doors situated in County Meath, is the latest company to choose Salvador in order to transform its crosscutting production and output. After discussions with Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin, and a visit to the W16 exhibition at the NEC where they saw Salvador machines put through their paces, the company decided on a Superpush 200 Optimising Automatic System which incorporates 6200mm infeed tables, twin electro pneumatic aligners and a barcode label printer amongst its

numerous features. The machine has been installed at Kells Windows by Daltons Wadkin engineers and is now revolutionising performance in the mill. On only the second day of installation the Salvador processed one and a half day’s work in just two hours. Advice on improving performance Brothers Declan and Damien Grimes, who have worked on many prestigious projects not only in Ireland but also in UK and US markets, approached Andy Walsh for advice with regard to improving crosscutting performance. Andy subsequently visited Kells Windows in Ireland

and was delighted with the outcome. “Kells is a family-run business similar to our own. They believe above all in quality of manufacture and are leading suppliers of window design and technology, particularly in the Irish market. We were delighted to have the opportunity of putting in yet another Salvador and even more so as the installation is in Ireland. “We will shortly have Salvadors installed in both the North and South and are confident that the popularity of this top end product will spread this side of the Irish Sea as it has throughout the UK.” 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

DCS cyclone clone for Arbor Forest Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has recently completed installation and commissioning of a second dust extraction system for Arbor Forest Products’ MDF mouldings facility at the company’s New Holland headquarters in North Lincolnshire. DCS installed the extraction plant for Arbor Forest Products’ first MDF mouldings unit, which started production in early 2014, and the addition of this new £2.8m mill will double production capacity – furthering the company’s aim of become a leading supplier of MDF mouldings to the UK market. The state-of-the-art, high throughput manufacturing plant inevitably produces high levels of MDF waste and the success of the previous extraction installation was a key factor in the decision to award the contract for a second system to DCS Ltd. At the heart of the new system is a clean side inverter driven 75kW main fan which extracts to a DCS cyclonic filter with the capacity to clean up to 45,000m3 of air per hour. Standing 10m high and around 4m in diameter, its robust welded steel construction and six ATEX-certified explosion relief panels ensure the DCS cyclonic filter can safely handle potentially explosive dusts. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems, explains: “Cyclonic filtration is highly-suited to continuous operation processes where large volumes of heavily dust-laden air are produced. The model installed at Arbor Forest is capable of collecting up to 1000kg of dust per hour, with the initial cyclonic separation removing over 95% of the waste, which drops into the conical hopper.” The remaining dust is filtered from the circulating air by a patented array of tubular filter bags. The efficiency of the polyester anti-static The DCS installation provides a virtually dust-free environment at Arbor Forest Products’ MDF mouldings facility

75kW main fan extracts to a 45,000m3 capacity DCS Cyclonic filter, delivering MDF waste to a 50m3 silo or directly to a sealed bulk collection trailer

needle felt bags is maintained by a powerful reverse jet cleaning system, with automatic online management of cleaning cycles. This two-stage collection process enables very high filtration efficiency and the cleaned air, which can be either diverted back into the factory or discharged to atmosphere, contains a maximum

of 0.1mg of dust per cubic metre. All waste collected at the bottom of the hopper section is discharged pressure-free, via a rotary valve, from where a closed-loop transfer system feeds the waste directly to a bulk collection trailer or, when required, waste is manually diverted to an adjacent 50m3 capacity storage silo. Mirroring the previous installation, the silo is 4m in diameter, with a conical base, and features twin rotary valves; the main valve feeding a closed-loop transfer system directing waste to the collection trailer, and the second discharging to an emergency screw conveyor. Commenting further on the installation, Melvyn Bathgate added: “DCS will never compromise on safety and always incorporate a CARZ backpressure flap valve before the filter inlet. CARZ valves are ATEX-approved and, in the event of an explosion, are designed to prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames from travelling back along the ductwork in which it is mounted and into the factory.” Arbor Forest Products’ MDF manager, Gwyn Tuxford, who has been with the company for 20 years, commented: “The extraction system that DCS installed for MDF Mill 1 has been troublefree since the day it was commissioned and provides us with a virtually dust-free environment – we’re now looking forward to the same working conditions in the new mill.” In conclusion, Mr. Tuxford added: “Melvyn and the team at DCS deliver a first class service – from specification through to commissioning – installation of the extraction system for MDF Mill 2, including the complete ducting system, was completed in just 10 days.” 0800 040 7116 DCSlimited.co.uk

With the growth of its business, CNC routing specialist, AR 18, turned to Homag with its knowledge and experience to help multiply the firm’s performance and broaden its capabilities

AR 18 doubles production, improves quality and reduces waste with Homag UK

Homag Venture 200, Homag Automation TLF 411 and Weeke BHX 055 at AR 18 AR 18 has been in the CNC routing trade for around 15 years, producing high quality retail furniture and display stands, reception desks, feature walls and cladding panels for shopfitters. It also provides a full service offering to small joinery companies and sign makers without in-house CNC facilities. “Over the years, we’ve amassed considerable experience in CNC machinery,” explains Antony Cockerell, managing director of Uxbridgebased AR 18. He continues: “With the business expanding rapidly, we realised it was time to invest in new equipment that would drive our business to the next level. “Obviously, as global market leader, the Homag name was known to us and so we short-listed them alongside a couple of other well-known brands as we began our search for equipment ideal for multiple shift production. It didn’t take us long to narrow down our search to just two companies, one of which was Homag. “To be honest, there wasn’t a huge difference between the qualities of the machinery on offer. After visiting shows and seeing machine demonstrations, however, we made our decision. Homag came out on top in terms of cost, reliability, service, support, build and finish quality, but in the end it was my gut feel that swung the day.”

FP279 V2.indd 18

Homag UK – trust, knowledge, patience and understanding “The refreshing quality about Homag UK is that all the people there seem knowledgeable and willing to help. The Homag manager for our area, Roger Wilks, is a case in point; he has been a real champion for us. From the word go, he clearly wanted to find out exactly what we were looking to achieve so he could help us configure the best solutions. “He was very patient with us as we reconfigured our needs several times before settling on the ideal solution. The space available was quite awkward; we had a lot of height restrictions and building infrastructure to contend with. Roger, however, remained calm and relaxed throughout. He kept us up to date with how the changes would affect lead times in the build-up of the machines whilst ensuring we still hit our target date for production. “Throughout the sales process, I never felt pressure from Homag to ‘sign on the bottom line’. This was markedly different from the approach of the other potential supplier who was hard sell from the word go. Their priority seemed to be on getting my signature on the contract, rather than developing the right solution for our business. “Both in Germany and in the UK, Homag

handled the sale and installation process superbly; it all went to plan and was completely drama free. From my perspective, it couldn’t have gone any better. They dealt with all the other trades including Indusvent who did an excellent job on the dust extraction.” Investing in a quality edgebander delivering invisible joints At the end of 2015, AR 18 invested in four machines from Homag UK – a Brandt Ambition 1440 airTec edgebander, a Weeke BHX 055 vertical drilling and routing machine, a Weeke Vantage 200 CNC processor and a storage system from Homag Automation, the TLF 411. Antony Cockerell again: “Prior to our deal with Homag, we didn’t have any edgebanding facilities in-house. Our business was a relatively low production run environment, manufacturing a lot of one-off high-end production pieces, so we’d always found it beneficial to hand-finish or sub-contract the edgebanding work. “With the business growing, however, we had started looking at some higher volume jobs where it would be expedient for us to have our own edgebander. One of the advantages of the Brandt Ambition 1440 that we particularly liked, was the airTec system for invisible joints. That gave us the ability, even on high volume jobs,

09/01/2017 15:27

INSTALLATIONS 19

www.furnitureproduction.net

to get the quality of finish we were looking for, especially with white finishes.” Weeke machines save time and improve quality “Another issue we needed to address with our old machinery set-up was the ability to do edge drilling. We didn’t want to tie up the new Weeke Vantage 200 CNC processing centre with basic edge drilling tasks, so we decided to handle the edge drilling as a secondary process. It was this function that attracted us to the extremely good value for money Weeke BHX 055. “The other benefits of the BHX 055 are that it takes up very little floor space and is a great back-up machine to our other routers. If the routers are all busy or have maintenance issues, the BHX is able to handle 90% of their work. Not only is it is a very reliable machine, but also the quality of the drilling and routing is first class, making it the ideal complementary machine. “As part of our expansion plans for the business we linked up with Brunel University to carry out some time and motion studies on our existing processes. Results showed that one of the slowest areas in our work flow was the manual loading and unloading of the routers. With this in mind, we wanted to invest in a new CNC that could alleviate this issue. “This objective led us to the Weeke Vantage 200 CNC processing centre. The beauty of the Vantage 200 is it has self-loading and off-loading options. I’d seen a couple of other machines do self-loading and unloading very badly, but the Weeke Vantage 200 was the first machine that I’d

witnessed that looked like it would consistently work properly. “I was very impressed with it and I am happy to say that, on the loading and unloading side alone, we have doubled throughput. What’s more, the Vantage 200 has enabled us to replace two of our existing routers with just the one machine.” Automatic stock control and handling – the unsung hero “The last, but by no means least, addition to our plant was the Homag Automation TLF 411 stock control and handling system. This is just an incredible piece of equipment. “As someone interested in manufacturing and processes, when I first saw it, I was amazed. The TLF 411 quietly works away in the background like an unsung hero. It organises all the board stock and mitigates issues that can become problems down the production stream, such as marked or damaged boards. “The love and care of the boards is now entrusted to the machine rather than having to rely on a forklift truck operator or an employee dragging the boards across the factory floor. “We now QC (quality control) the raw boards as they arrive in from the supplier; from that point on, I know everything about each board we have in stock. I know where it is stored, I know when it came in, what size it is and what colour it is, so in terms of knowing what’s what, I have all that information on hand. “When I first saw it, I said to my management team that if we don’t invest in this technology, in Weeke Vantage 200 CNC processing centre

five years we’re going to be struggling to keep up with the competition. Since its introduction into our production facility I can safely say that the TLF 411 stock control and handling system has transformed our business.” Ease of operation with fingertip controls in a calm working environment “Another big advantage is the ease of operation of the Homag Group machinery. All the models we have added to our plant use the Homag PowerTouch screen, making it very easy for the operators to switch from machine to machine. “It’s not the same interface necessarily, but it looks and feels very similar. Consequently, for the shop floor machinists it provides a familiar operating environment, so they are very relaxed and keen to get on another machine and try it out. “All in all, the investment in Homag Group machinery has had an extremely positive impact on our business. Not only has the volume of production more than doubled, but also we’re able to take on larger jobs than we could previously. We can now service a more costconscious sector whilst maintaining our ability to handle our one-off and high-end production pieces at a higher quality standard. “In terms of stock control and management, the TLF 411 has made a huge difference. It has helped speed up production whilst at the same time giving us more control over our stock than ever before. In turn, this means we are achieving over 50% less stock wastage than before. “The stress and pressure we used to work under have gone and consequently reworking has been dramatically reduced, as have the need for overtime and weekend work. Overall, we are producing more finished goods in a calmer, safer environment and our turnover and profit margins have both increased. “As a company, Homag is very proud of what it does and that really comes across. The quality of their products speaks for itself so they don’t have to resort to the hard sell approach. With Homag, there is a real sense of building a longterm relationship for the future and that is very comforting,” concludes Antony Cockerell. Brilliant surfaces with DI-NOC Architectural Finishes from 3M Designers, architects and manufacturers of commercial and domestic furniture and associated fittings now have access to a wide range of surface finishes that faithfully replicate the appearance of natural materials. In addition to enabling a raft of new creative ideas, DI-NOC Architectural Finishes from 3M can be used to refurbish virtually any worn or outdated surface without the need for full replacement of the original constructions and at a fraction of the cost. The PVC films can be applied to all kinds of furniture, including work and table tops and doors, as well as columns, walls, ceilings, floors and partitions. Available in over 900 distinctive and visually stunning finishes as diverse as wood and wood tones, metal, marble, stone, leather, carbon fibreeffect and stucco, DI-NOC offers a number of key benefits in application. In addition to radically reducing the cost of replacement, the films can be applied to both flat and complex convex/ concave surfaces and purposely removed to meet any future changes in design requirements. The films are also highly durable and have an effective lifespan of up to 12 years. They are also resistant to the ingress of water and dirt, the effects of impact wear and abrasion and meet the latest IMO flammability requirements. In most cases, the films also carry a Class O + 1 fire rating and require no harsh chemical cleaning agents to maintain their original pristine condition. DI-NOC has already been used extensively in a number of high-profile refurbishment projects. Among the most notable of these was its use by the Kew Green Hotels Group to refurbish the curved main reception desk at its Ibis Styles Crewe outlet. Luxury wood tones created using DI-NOC transformed a rather ordinary-looking

desk into a sleek and aesthetically pleasing feature that complements the overall ambiance of the hotel. As part of the re-branding of leading healthcare and insurance provider PruHealth to Vitality, DI-NOC films were also used to transform the main reception area at the company’s primary location. The films were also employed for new interior wall signage and a complete reworking of the furniture. In further similarly high-profile refurbishment projects, DI-NOC was used by the Post Office

FP279 V2.indd 26

to refurbish the counters at 6500 main and local outlets and more recently for the refurbishment of the bar counter of the Guinness Dugout at the Thomond Park Stadium in Limerick, Ireland. In each case, all of the design and ID requirements were faithfully met with brilliant design-led solutions using DI-NOC. Most significantly, however, these were achieved without any loss of visual appeal or design differentiation and at a fraction of the cost of replacement. 01344 858000 3M.co.uk

The trend for realistic, textured-woodgrain kitchen surfaces first seen in high-end German and Italian ranges is now firmly established in the UK market.

Innovation is the watchword in Egger’s product range Demand for MFC panels with deep synchronised textures, and the look and feel of rustic raw timber, has soared – leading Egger to invest heavily in additional production facilities at its Northumberland site. In recent years, the company has introduced synchronised pore décors, where print and texture align to create a perfectly registered finish. Characterised by knots, saw marks and planking it gives the board a natural feel almost indistinguishable from real wood. Egger UK’s head of décor developments, Elliott Fairlie, says: “Within our Zoom range, what we describe as our Feelwood textures have been extremely popular. These authentic new designs feature a double paper layer and highly-realistic gloss levels, creating a depth and realism previously only available from a veneer or solid timber. Demand from manufacturers for its Feelwood designs has also led Egger to launch a new, carefully-curated collection of its most authentic, deeply-textured, melamine-faced chipboard panels. And by bringing the 10 premium MFC décors together with perfectly-matching laminates in the standalone Feelwood collection, it believes it will make it easier for designers and specifiers – with new marketing and point-of-sale materials. “Whether it’s an on-trend kitchen, a hotel bedroom or an office interior – demand for something that looks and feels like real wood continues to grow,” Elliott says. “But the advantages our products have, apart from price, is that you get surfaces that are durable, sustainable, main10ance-free and offer colour continuity now and in the future. Egger is the first wood-based materials manufacturer to offer synchronised pore – where the textured finish aligns with the grain itself Grey Beige Gladstone Oak

– across all of its boards. The new Feelwood collection includes hardwearing laminates and sleek compact laminates as well as melaminefaced chipboard. Feelwood is available in 10 décors, some brand new introductions and others a fresh take on popular classics – including Halifax Oak and Sepia Gladstone Oak. Available double-sided with both surfaces deeply textured, the Structure 27 and Structure 28 décors also have a single-sided option with a non-synchronised reverse for where a lower-cost product is required. Egger’s quest for ever-more-realistic, innovative products for furniture manufacturers is also amply demonstrated in its worktop range – where it was the first supplier to offer synchronised pore worktops combining the natural look and feel of solid wood with all the durability, care and main10ance benefits of laminate. Launched last autumn, its revamped worktop range has had a major impact on the sector. “The role of the kitchen is changing, with home owners increasingly looking for open plan spaces that are co-ordinated to create the right look and feel for multifunctional living,“ adds Elliott. “Creating that co-ordinated look requires materials that either match or complement the worktop. “And because Egger supplies the materials

that are made into doors, carcasses, shelving, end panels, upstands and plinths, the resources exist to bring the co-ordinated look together.” The decision to retain a tight postformed edge in the Contemporary range rather than move completely over to the even more-fashionable square-edge profile, reflects feedback from customers and installers that shows there remains a strong demand for this type of worktop. Using a high-density protective layer along the front of the core board creates an edge that is less susceptible to damage from impact, a vulnerable spot on some postformed worktops, whilst the tight 3mm radius on the postformed edge gives a contemporary look. For those looking for something even more on-trend, the new square-edge Premium range has a sharper, fashionable look and is available in 12 décors. The woodgrain and gloss décors are all 38mm, whilst the six stone and ceramic décors are available in a sleek 25mm thickness. As well as offering the sleeker, thinner worktop look that is growing more popular, it gives the opportunity to better-replicate the unique visual appearance of granite and stone. Premium tops are available in 4100 x 650mm single edged or 4100 x 920mm double edged, using 1.5mm ABS edging instead of 2mm to create an even more realistic look. egger.co.uk

Starbank’s total commitment to HPL

The bonding of high pressure laminates has been at the core of Starbank Panel Products since the company’s incorporation forty years ago. It’s fair to say, Starbank loves laminate. Over this time Starbank has built up an unrivalled wealth of knowledge in fabrication of this impressive material, which has developed incredible properties in terms of surface finish and performance over the last decade. The pace of product development in high pressure laminates (HPL) was further replicated at Starbank culminating in the launch of its own decorative lightweight core panel: STARlite® for example. As a major sub-contract fabricator for the interior fit-out and fire door industry, Starbank partners with all the major manufacturers and distributors to provide an almost unlimited choice of specified and non-specified decorative surfaces and core material options in the UK.

FP279 V2.indd 30

Starbank was also the first company in Europe with BM Trada to obtain an integrated management system together with FSC and PEFC chain-of-custody, way back in 2004. Environmental credentials have been further enhanced recently as part of an major factory move to a 16 acre, 116,000ft2 manufacturing facility. With on-site biomass and solar energy recovery, Starbank says it will maintain its position as an ethical and responsible manufacturer in the UK marketplace. Starbank business development manager, John McCaffrey, comments: “It’s really encouraging to see that more and more of our customers are demanding chainof-custody certified products from us too, and high pressure laminate is now a very real part of that

under the controlled wood standard. Currently our decorative panels are laminated using high quality PVA D3 adhesive as standard, or alternatively with a more specialist D4 glue line for demanding applications where required. “We are currently producing 1100 high pressure laminate panels per week on average in a variety of sizes up to 3660 x 1525mm. It’s a testament to our production department who are able to achieve this capacity year on year. Its fast approaching 2.5mft2 of decorative HPL in a combination of single and double sided finished product, or if we put it another way, an area larger than 30 football pitches per annum!” Once bonded, panels are automatically stored by job or size within Starbank’s Schelling VS16 robotic retrieval system which directly feeds two Schelling FH6 beam saws. “It is an amazing system and there to protect the boards more than anything – delivering them quickly and efficiently to the saws without damage, even to sensitive gloss surfaces,” explains John. “Further fabrication with cutting and optimisation, edgebanding using high performance PUR adhesives, contour edgebanding, CNC drilling and machining and throughfeed postforming are all at our customers’ disposal. “We have always made a commitment to our customers that we will endeavour to achieve the highest possible quality at the best value price that we can. Part of this promise involves us continually investing in both our technology and our skilled fabricators. 2017 will see us once again invest heavily in our plant and machinery, with major plans within our laminating department. “We are genuinely excited at the opportunities ahead and are confident that the quality and technology at Starbank has never looked better.” 01925 223965 starbank-uk.com

Pantone, a global authority on colour for the design industries, has announced Pantone 15-0343 Greenery as the Pantone colour of the year selection for 2017; a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals individuals to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.

Greenery unveiled as Pantone’s colour of the year 2017

“While Serenity and Rose Quartz, the Pantone colour of the year 2016, expressed the need for harmony in a chaotic world,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape. “Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate, revitalise and unite, Greenery symbolises the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.” A constant on the periphery, Greenery is now being pulled to the forefront – it is an omnipresent hue around the world. Pantone 15-0343 Greenery is a life-affirming shade and is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality. “The tangy yellow-green speaks to our desire to express, explore, experiment and reinvent, imparting a sense of buoyancy,” says Leatrice. “Through its reassuring yet assertive vibrancy, Greenery offers us self-assurance and boldness to live life on our own terms, during a time when we are redefining what makes us successful and happy.” pantone.com

The Swiss Krono One World Collection offers a range of woodgrain finishes that meet customer needs and market trends – pictured on the tall storage units are St Moritz Walnut and Barcelona Walnut in the One Wood texture

Timber is the material of the moment in interior design, driven by its ability to combine well with any colours and materials. There is growing consumer demand for woodgrain finishes in every room of the home, with applications including kitchen cabinetry, shelving and bedroom and bathroom furniture.

Swiss Krono’s One World woodgrains offer realistic looks and easy maintenance The warmth, depth of colour and tactile properties of woodgrains also mean they are a strong trend in furniture and interior fit-outs for commercial, retail, hotel and leisure projects. Oak is enduringly popular because of the wider interior design trend for warm neutrals and its perception as a timeless classic. At the same time, grey continues to be the base

tone of all the major colour and material trends, from light through to dark, and this is evident in woodgrains, natural stones and solid colours. Responding to this trend, Swiss Krono has developed new woodgrains such as Barcelona Walnut and Dublin Oak which are modern and warm in character and can work well across a range of furniture applications. Advances in print and surface technology

mean that these days, it is possible to have the best of both worlds when you want woodgrain finishes. Laminates and MFC mirror the natural beauty and warmth of timber yet offer the benefits of UV-resistant hard-wearing materials that are easy to maintain. The products are very easy to machine and work with compared with natural timber, with no need for sanding, sealing or re-sealing.

and colours and making each sheet a unique piece. Each sheet is extremely light, weighing just 1.5kg per m², allowing a real stone finish to applications that would nearly be impossible with a traditional stone. Thanks to the polyester resin and fibreglass, which is applied to the back of each sheet, Decostone is extremely strong and flexible – exactly like a laminate – and it can be easily fitted to curved surfaces such as furniture, pillars and walls. The changing colours, vivid patterns and unique textures combine to make each sheet a wonder to the eyes. Each one among the 16 different available varieties has its own unique beauty in look and texture, boasting a particular design that can be both classic and modern. Decostone is not just an innovative product, it’s the ideal choice for creating a world-class finish on furniture or an eye-catching furniture door, making it a special and distinctive part of the room. Being a 100% waterproof stone, thanks to the special coating applied to the surface, Decostone is an innovative choice for kitchen and bathroom furniture: not only does it ensure a great durability and resistance to humidity, but it also provides an amazing impact in terms of aesthetics, conveying a luxury and valuable sensation. For these reasons, and for its light weight, Decostone is widely used not only for homes and offices, but also in hotel and yacht fitting. 0203 769 6682 london@decolan.ch decolan.co

44 CNC MACHINERY

www.furnitureproduction.net

For many years JJ Smith Woodworking Machinery has offered specialist, bespoke equipment to suit customers individual production requirements. Rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach, the company has carefully selected a number of partners to work with each of whom are specialist in different, but associated sectors of manufacturing.

Specialist CNC machining solutions This is highlighted by the co-operation JJ Smith has established with three leading manufacturers of CNC equipment, Comec Group, Intorex and MZ Project. The Comec Group and JJ Smith have been working together for over 20 years, initially offering a range of mechanical drilling, slotting, shaping and cutting machines mainly for use in the solid wood furniture industry. As the company grew and expanded it entered into the design and manufacture of a range of specialist CNC machinery that can be adapted and used to produce a wide range of components. The Frontal series of machines consists of a vertical automatic hopper feed loader, with a step-by-step throughfeed system which delivers the component to different machining stations which can include saw units, horizontal/vertical drilling, routing and end/face milling. This particular model of machine can be used for producing general furniture components, rails, tenoning/slotting window and door parts and also for machining drawer fronts. The MD series of CNC machining centre, are available in three different versions – MD Classic MD Top and MD Jamb. All of these can be configured with a number of different machining heads, including vertical and/ or horizontal milling heads and NC drilling groups which can be specified to work on all the faces/ends of a furniture rail. In addition a C axis can be added meaning it is possible to cut components to size, with either straight or angled cutting. Another unique feature of the MD is that it can be equipped with an automatic hopper feed loading system to offer continuous production. The MD Jamb model is specifically designed for the volume production of door components and door linings, with the possibility to have

FP279 V2.indd 44

automatic infeed and outfeed loading systems. While Intorex is probably best know for producing woodturning lathes, four and five axis between centres CNC machines now account for over 50% of its annual production with sales being made worldwide. These machines

can produce a wide range of traditional, contemporary-or complex-shaped furniture parts along with stair spindles and newel posts. A unique feature is that they all incorporate CNC controlled sanding heads, which allow for the components to come off as finished

sanded items. In addition, thanks to the automatic hopper feed loading it is possible to set up for continuous, uninterrupted production. The TC1000 model is equipped with a CNCcontrolled milling head for shaping and then either one or two vertical/horizontal router heads that can perform other machining operations. The TMC model has five interpolated axes with a total of eight CNC axes that control the shaping head, sanding head, the sawblade for turning and overhead router with eight-position rotary tool-changer. The working length capacity is either 1500mm or 3000mm while blanks with a section up to 300mm square. can be loaded and machined. On request the TMC can be supplied in the DB configuration meaning it is equipped with either one or two flat bed matrix tables that can be fitted with either vacuum or pneumatic clamping. This gives the machine an even greater level of versatility allowing for standard four axis machining to take place using the router head. The latest addition to the range is the TKC1500 which can be supplied with up to six different heads for shaping, sanding, milling and turning. All machines are supplied as standard with the intorEDIT 3D design software, while the TMC now also comes complete with the Solidworks and Solidcam software package. The sawblade that is used for turning on TMC

FP279 V2.indd 45

and TKC models has been specially designed for Intorex to its exact specification thus ensuring the very best possible results in terms of detail and finished quality of the turned part. Another unique feature that is available across the range is the patented eccentric tailstock which gives the facility to load and machine timber blanks that are off centre, which is particularly useful for producing table or chair legs. Lastly one aspect of the machine design that Intorex feels is of great importance is the actual build of the main machine frame. On all models it uses solid steel, electrowelded basements with a plate thickness of 35mm. Only by using this type of structure can vibration-free, accurate machining be achieved. To date, size machines have been sold into the UK, with one customer recently installing his second machine. Finally from MZ Project there is a complete range of CNC-controlled bandsaw machines, which eliminates the need for manual cutting, marking out and jigs, meaning the operation is much quicker and safer than when using standard manual bandsaws. They can be specified to cut either solid wood and/or flat panel material with the top-of-therange Pluris model being fitted with router and drill heads meaning it is possible to cut nested sofa/chair frame parts from 2.5 x 1.2m sheets,

with the possibility to cut up four boards high thus making the machine very productive. 0151 548 9000 jjsmith.co.uk

Based in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, Willow Joinery designs and manufactures bespoke joinery tailored to the customers’ needs – the business prides itself on attention to detail no matter what size the job. But how could Willow Joinery react to growing demand without merely extending its lead times and potentially losing grip on its quality threshold?

Creating a new level of joinery performance with Temac Over the last couple of years, Soukup’s window production machinery has been selected by an increasing number of joinery firms across the UK. As one of the fastest-growing brands in the country, demand for Soukup’s range of solutions for window production is growing strongly – so much so, Soukup has invested in a new manufacturing plant near Prague to help cope with growing demand from here in the UK. Dan Raymond is a director of Willow Joinery and he first became aware of Soukup at the W14 exhibition. There he met Jaroslav Soukup, the owner of Soukup Woodworking Machinery and Ian Brown, MD of Soukup’s exclusive UK dealer, IWM Ltd. “Although we were very impressed by all the machines Jaroslav and Ian had on display, we thought such a machine wouldn’t be financially achievable for a small joinery firm,” explains Dan. “In late summer of 2015 with growing demand

Willow Joinery director Dan Raymond is delighted with the performance of his Temac

for our windows and doors, we made the decision to invest in some modern machinery to speed up production. We searched all the wellknown firms but couldn’t find a suitable machine for our budget. “After reading that Soukup was releasing a new CNC tenoner – designed with the smaller workshop in mind – we got in touch with Ian who invited us to visit another joinery firm which had recently a Temac machine. After seeing the machine in action, and having a chat with Ian and Jaroslav, we realised that this was the right machine for us.” Willow Joinery, as is typical for a small joinery firm, started out using only a range of classic and traditional equipment to create its windows and assorted joinery work. Of course, there is nothing essentially wrong with that, other than it is inherently time-consuming and it becomes a considerable challenge when a firm’s demand begins to increase. Soukup’s Temac machine has been

Both IWM MD, Ian Brown, and Soukup owner, Jaroslav Soukup, were onsite to oversee the installation at Willow Joinery

developed particularly for the small joinery workshop wishing to compete effectively and efficiently in today’s highly competitive market. A typical joinery workshop mainly uses manual spindle moulders to produce windows by making single operations. The Temac tenoning machine can, with the guidance from its WinCreator software, move production to a different level altogether. “Before the Temac was installed we used a number of machines to produce our windows. These included a three-head tenoner, a mortise machine and a spindle moulder,” explains Dan. “Needless to say, this trio took considerable time to set up and pass the window components through. The company needed to find a solution. “Once the tooling had been selected to suit the windows we wanted to produce, it took six weeks before the Temac was delivered – and both Jaroslav and Ian promptly made the journey for the installation. After day one, the Temac was up-and-running, ready for training. “The WinCreator software is simple to use as is the Temac. After making a few sample windows we started on our first job list which consisted of eight oak flush casement windows which we completed in a matter of hours, cutting our production time greatly. I would highly recommend the Temac for any company with growing demand for their products – the service we received from Jaroslav and Ian is second to none and will be the first company we call for future purchases.” 01869 244943 07944 108747 iwmachines.co.uk

Whether looking for a through feed machine or a stand alone machine for routing, drilling or both, NEY can offer the right solution.

Impressive CNC options with NEY The Vitap Point has been designed and built to be a small footprint CNC machine capable of face drilling, edge drilling and grooving by blade in the X axis. With the addition of the optional router, cutting and shaping operations can be carried out with ease. The Point 2 boring machine, is an intelligent solution at a very competitive price. It is a CNC controlled point to point boring machine with through feed, panel boring from the bottom and automatic panel return to the operator. The Point 2 is the affordable automatic through feed drilling machine that combines flexibility and high productivity, with no lost time on set up between jobs. Thanks to the belt drive system, processing of long panels is seamless, with no clamp or unclamp delay. Double Zero Reference is a standard feature and the fact that the panel is drilled from the bottom means that hole depths are more accurate and assembly holes are perfectly matched as the drilling takes reference from both the leading and trailing edges of the panel. In addition to the Point 2 (max width 920mm) and the Point K2 (max width 1100mm) Vitap also offer the Point Acoustic which is designed for the acoustic panel sector and is capable of drilling 54 holes every four seconds in a through feed cycle. Alberti is one of the most respected names in the industry and has been involved with the production of CNC solutions for drilling, routing and grooving for many years. The T-Flight machine is in a class of its own with respect to speed and ease of use. With its compact footprint and intuitive software it allows medium to large size manufacturers to put in place a batch one philosophy. A standard laser allows for exact measurement of the panel length which in turn

Alberti’s T-Flight

will automatically compensate for dimensional errors in the panel. Whilst the machine is essentially a vertical and horizontal drill, aggregates such as grooving and routing can be added to enhance production. Programming and management of the machine is via Albatros TPA-ED32 software. The programming system enables individual programs or work lists to be selected and, if required, recalled by reading a label containing a bar code thus enabling production per order one part after the next, going directly into assembly

or into a flat pack area. No time is lost between job changeover, saving time and increasing productivity. For traditional pod and rail and flat table nesting technology Cosmec has all the solutions. Since 1960 Cosmec have been producing CNC routers and can supply solutions from a standard 2440 x 1220mm flat bed entry level machine up to twin shuttle table routers and five axis technology. The Fox range of machines has been designed to suit the small to medium size manufacturer due to its compact footprint and ease of use. Available in three bed sizes, with face drilling, horizontal drilling, automatic tool change and 10Kw router spindle all as standard. The bridge type construction makes for a solid stable machine which is capable of machining MDF, MFC, Corian, acrylics and plastics as well as other materials commonly used. The software included comes complete with the Aspan nesting option to enable easy nesting of components when required. A tool length pre-setter comes as standard for ease of tool setting. The Conquest Range of machines has been designed to suit medium to large size manufacturers. The machine can be supplied in nesting cell format, which would include automatic loading and unloading. The machine is ideally suited to large production of kitchens and cabinet doors whilst is flexible enough to cope with most other production types. Standard features as contained within the Fox series but

having a higher operating speed, pressure sensitive mats and perimeter guarding included as standard The Smart 30 machine is a pod and rail machine which has been constructed in a modular way to allow for easy modification when bespoke or special equipment is required outside of the standard specifications. In its most basic format the machine has the ability to face drill, horizontal drill (all four edges), groove and rout and is ideal for both flat panel and joinery products. With the addition of options such as five axis or aggregates the machine can easily manufacture stair parts or external doors and window profiles. The easy to use Aspan software, whilst extremely powerful and intuitive in its own right, will work alongside third party software to ensure seamless programming either in the office or directly at the machine. A recent acquisition to NEY is TOP Srl. This Italian manufacturer produces vertical through feed solutions for drilling, grooving, routing and insertion of hardware furniture elements. TOP Srl was born in January 2006, with the co-operation of two associates formerly with Bre.ma and with the participation of TPA Spa – a leader in the sector of software automatisation and numerical control machines. The original aim of TOP was to help the machine manufacturers to

introduce important technological innovations into the market, to help some machine users to increase production and quality to a maximum level and to help TPA spa test and certificate electronic and information solutions for industrial use. But now since 2008, TOP has been designing and producing CNC drilling and inserting machines for all the elements of furniture. TOP design and manufacture special vertical CNC machines for drilling, milling, routing and insertion of dowel pins and fittings in all the elements that make up the furniture. The fundamental characteristic of TOP machines is the high degree of customisation which makes them suitable to meet the specific needs of the customer. Thanks to its experience in the field TOP also provides service, spare parts for boring-inserting machines by different manufacturers and retrofits for second hand machines. 02476 308100 ney.co.uk

Established in 2008, Trade CNC prides itself in offering the complete package that any customer could want from a CNC routing business. Its ever-increasing reputation has been built on the solid foundations of quality, professionalism and innovation driven by its founding directors.

Homag UK provides Trade CNC the helping hand for increased production “Our passion is to ensure we provide our customers with over and above what they expect. We’re not just any manufacturer, we’re a design-led manufacturer,” Paul Dodd, MD of Trade CNC explains. “When customers come to us, we’re able to completely transform their timber work into great products. We design, fully assemble and arrange the complete logistics of their products – we offer the full package.” Setting the stall for a productive future “2014 was a milestone year for us. After careful analysis by the company directors, it was clear that if we were to keep up with the demand and potential opportunities within the market, we needed to automate the most time-consuming of processes within our production.” “Of course when investing in new machinery we instinctively did our research to ensure we acquired the best in the industry. For us this wasn’t difficult. Renowned for their well engineered, flawless German-quality built machinery, the brand name of Homag alone sets them head and shoulders above the rest – it was an unquestionable decision. “Our initial investment saw the introduction of a Brandt Ambition 1110F and Weeke BHX 050. Right from the off they opened the doors to greater opportunities. Trade CNC began winning contracts that we never would have even considered nor been able to manage before. From using desktop edgebanders to having flexible production at our fingertips, the transformation in the quality of edgebanding was priceless.

Brandt Ambition 1110F – flexible entry level edgebanding “Prior to the BHX, we had to drill certain items by hand. One contract alone required 16,000 holes to be produced all of which were done manually. However, as soon as the BHX 050 was introduced to our production, it became a whole different ball game. The process became remarkably quicker and the accuracy of the results were second to none. “The time saved by automating both the edgebanding and drilling processes gave the business the expansion and business openings we could have only have dreamed of before.” Taking the next step… “The following year, we once again took to the drawing board to see how we could enhance the technologies at Trade CNC further. Having considered the cost implications to upgrade and

FP279 V2.indd 53

improve our existing flatbed nesting machine, it was evident that not only was the machine outdated but we simply could not justify an expenditure only in hope that it would keep up with the production levels we intend to achieve. “Even though our original machine is still in production, we decided to invest in a brand new CNC processing centre that had the capacity to fulfil our wildest expectations.” “Our decision to stick with Homag for this investment was purely down to a number of key factors – one of the main driven reasons to continue our loyalty was based on the support we receive from both sales and service. “When we call, we can always speak to the hotline. Any problems, questions and queries we have, are always answered and solved efficiently. The importance of a seamless flow in production is vital when manufacturing – we need to know we’ve got someone to rely on. This is when Homag steps in – they’re our lifeline. “We also wanted to remain consistent with our software programming and Homag provides just that – its woodWOP software application is so easy to use and as it is compatible with other Homag equipment, it meant we would be able to reap even more benefits within the manufacturing process and our existing machinery. “Investing in the Weeke Vantage 100 instantly propelled Trade CNC into new dimensions. Straightaway we had the facility to machine 10ft sheets, increasing our scale in production dramatically. The introduction of a 14-place tool changer and FLEX-5 axis took the flexibility of our production processes to new levels, achieving and creating intricate 3D work to a standard and detail we’ve been unable to offer before. “We also opted for the automatic push-off device for the Vantage 100. This conveyor belt removes all the machined parts from the matrix table allowing the operator to load another sheet ready for the next batch to be processed immediately. Overall this facility has increased our production by 53%.

“Previously the loading and offloading responsibility was down to our operators – we were experiencing at least 10 minutes loss in production due to manual handling whereas now the same process takes a matter of 30 seconds.” Support when it’s needed most… “Homag Finance make it easy. Naturally for a small company like ours, purchasing new machinery is no small commitment. Homag Finance has been involved with all three of our purchases and having the support from a team who not only understand our business but also our financial needs, is very reassuring. “The future for Trade CNC looks very positive and the decision to automate the key processes that the business relies on couldn’t have been more successful. With the helping hand of Brandt and Weeke, they’ve allowed us to outstrip certain costs and achieve results we could only have imagined. By the end of the year we aim to have achieved a complete return on the Vantage100 investment and for a small company like us, that’s a fantastic achievement.” Seal of approval “We always invest heavily in products that we believe will be most beneficial to achieving above and beyond what our customers expect. Ensuring we have top end design software and manufacturing facilities, however, is one of our key priorities in guaranteeing this happens. “At Trade CNC we offer our visitors the opportunity to see our factory where subsequently their products are made – it’s a regular occurrence for visitors to comment on our Homag Group machinery and its distinguished high quality results. This gives us great pride in knowing that we really did invest in the best,” concludes Paul. In 2016, Alderwood Joinery relocated production to larger 550m2 workshop premises, situated just five miles northwest of Newcastle city centre – a move that was precipitated by the need for additional space following the company’s decision to invest in a new CNC machining centre from SCM Group UK.

SCM Accord nesting at Alderwood Alderwood Joinery began trading in early 2014, initially specialising in bespoke joinery for the construction industry, including custom-designed staircases, doors, and other architectural joinery. During this time, however, the company has broadened its customer base, and established a reputation for supplying quality joinery for the shopfitting sector, including work for a major high street coffee brand, as well as manufacturing bespoke reception desks for customer-facing office environments, and for production of furniture used in care and residential homes. However, as business owner Wendy Cronin explains: “Much of the work being undertaken for this newer clientele often necessitates the production of multiples of the same components

FP279 V2.indd 58

and, in order to service this market effectively, it soon became apparent that some investment in automated machinery was required to increase production speed and repeatability.” A key factor in the decision to proceed with investment in a CNC production unit was the timely appointment of workshop manager Mark Clennan. Having previously worked with CNC machinery, Mark was ideally placed to advise on the production capabilities of a CNC machine, and to put together an outline brief for the machining facilities Alderwood now needed. Having had experience of working with SCM machines in the past, Mark was aware of the wide range of CNC models and options available from SCM Group, and had discussions with SCM’s area sales manager, Lee Gibson, to assess the company’s requirements.

After meeting with Alderwood, Lee had no hesitation in recommending the SCM Accord 25 FX-M CNC machining centre, with specifications tailored to handle the variety of work Alderwood Joinery was now regularly undertaking. “We did have discussions with other CNC manufacturers,” says Mark Clennan, “but the proposal from SCM Group ticked all the boxes for us, and the machine has continued to meet our expectations in the months since it was commissioned.” The Accord 25 FX-M CNC installed at Alderwood is a five-axis machine, and is equipped with the high-performance SCM multi-function extruded aluminium worktable. It is capable of highly flexible production and provides exceptional precision and finish quality regardless of component shape and dimensions.

TecPad allows the operator to monitor and adjust machining operations remotely

The aluminium worktable is fixed directly to the machine’s steel base, ensuring maximum stability and rigidity, and preventing vibration during machining. Holes in the worktable, spaced 120mm apart, provide suction from the integrated vacuum circuit, and the provision of two independent vacuum pumps allows the use of two discreet working areas when required. A matrix of T-shaped grooves, at 40mm spacing, allows optimum positioning of rubber seals and locking of support fixtures, such as suction cups or jigs. To meet Alderwood’s production requirements, Lee proposed a worktable with ‘X-Y’ machining area of 3650 x 2120mm – this represents the shortest and widest machining area available with the Accord 25 FX-M, which can be specified with a maximum worktable length up to 6170mm,

and a minimum width of just 1320mm. In the Z axis, this model allows passage of components up to 250mm in height. The Prisma KS machining head is equipped with a 12kW high-speed electrospindle, capable of rotation speeds from 600 to 24,000rpm, and features a quick release tool holder. To guarantee maximum strength and torque during routing, the head is fixed directly to the mobile gantry, facilitating high levels of stock removal, when necessary, and achieving the highest quality finish. During machining operations, the gantry travels the length of the bed at a top speed of 60m/min, and operator safety at Alderwood is ensured by the installation of horizontal photocells, fitted around the machine perimeter, which cut machine speed to 25m/min if the

Trainee operator, Ryan Robinson, is tutored by Alderwood’s workshop manager, Mark Clennan

SCM Accord 25 FX-M makes light work of nested components for furniture framework at Alderwood Joinery operator steps within a metre of the machine. In addition to the standard mobile console control unit, the machine specification for Alderwood also included a TecPad – a handheld 7in touch screen remote control unit which provides truly mobile control of electrospindle rotation speed and speed of axes adjustment, and allows the operator to constantly monitor progress throughout machining operations. Lee Gibson comments: “During initial discussions with Mark Clennan, it was clear that Alderwood needed to carry out nesting operations as well as machining individual workpieces, and switching between the different

FP279 V2.indd 60

tasks needed to be fast and efficient.” Installation of the SCM Accord has also provided Alderwood with another diversification opportunity – as well as machining wood and timber, the company now machines Corian®, and is manufacturing reception area desking and storage systems destined for customers such as Nuffield Hospitals. In conclusion, Lee adds: “The SCM Accord 25 FX-M provides Mark with all the flexibility he needs to meet the challenging demands of Alderwood’s diverse production schedule.” 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.me.uk

BFC publishes its 2017 Manifesto – an action plan for Government The British Furniture Confederation (BFC) is the UK’s furniture industry’s representative body which seeks to ensure all Government policies and initiatives support a thriving furniture, furnishings and bed sector. The organisation has published its 2017 Manifesto calling for strong action from Government. The Manifesto has been sent to ministers across Government, as well as shadow ministers and key members of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group, with clear, implementable calls for action to bolster the furniture, furnishings and bed industry. “The BFC’s mission is to sustain a strong and influential dialogue with Government, ensuring that its policies support a thriving UK furniture industry,” says BFC chairman Jonathan Hindle. “Our Manifesto examines the key issues that affect our industry and highlights the clear actions the Government should take to ensure it thrives in the years ahead.” The BFC Manifesto has been developed in response to an industry-wide survey it conducted soon after the EU referendum was held. The survey, completed by almost 150 companies, identified a number of key challenges as well as opportunities for the industry. Some of the challenges identified in the survey include: • Between one third and one half of respondents across the board, from low end to high end retail, commercial and public sectors, had experienced a slowdown in business. • 63% had experienced a material increase in costs. • 88% expect further cost increases over the coming months – however only 40% expect to pass these on to customers. • 59% have difficulty recruiting high calibre, welltrained staff. • Only 28% use current industry apprenticeship schemes. • 68% of exporting companies say that access to the single market is essential or important to their business. • 80% are unable to access EU or UK Government funding for new investments. However, there were also a number of opportunities the Government ought to be aware of which could make a real difference to furniture manufacturers – and these are among the areas on which the BFC plans to focus its efforts. These include: • Greater liaison with the industry to fully understand market conditions and requirements

FP279 V2.indd 62

the industry needs to protect, develop and grow • Clearer improved advice or a central knowledgeable resource about specific export markets and their legal requirements • Ensuring competitive trade agreements are in place • More financial encouragement for export – such as tax breaks • Continued access to the Single Market and to European labour markets for skilled workers. The Manifesto outlines the BFC’s specific action plan for 2017 across four key areas: skills and training, exporting, the flammability regulations, and sustainability. On exports, the BFC is looking for a clear, five year, sector-specific support strategy so businesses have sufficient confidence to plan ahead, together with more powers and funding for Trade Challenge Partners. It also wants the Government to recognise furniture manufacturing as an important part of the economy in its own right and not just as part of the creative industries.

Bearing in mind the importance of trade with Europe, the BFC will urge the Government to provide as much information about its plans as soon as possible and to prioritise tarifffree access to the Single Market in its Brexit negotiations in order to preserve confidence and ensure a stable business environment in which businesses can plan. On flammability, the BFC will continue to raise the major concerns still remaining over the proposed amendments to the flammability regulations. The BFC supports the Government’s desire to see a reduction in the use of fireretardant chemicals, so long as it does not

compromise safety. However it does feel that the current proposals could have the opposite effect, as well as being more difficult to police or to achieve consistent results in comparison to the current state of affairs. While the BFC welcomes the Government’s support for apprenticeship schemes, it is keen that the emphasis is on quality and not just quantity. It is keen to ensure there is a long term strategy of support to make both employers and potential apprentices aware of the benefits. At the same time there are concerns that the Government’s focus on core subjects, as expressed in EBacc and Progress 8 performance measurements in schools, are in danger of marginalising design and technology on which the industry’s future depends. The BFC will continue to press for equal recognition for these more practical skills. The BFC will also be warning the Government not to follow immigration policies which widen the skills gap or which disproportionately harm SMEs. The BFC’s fourth platform for action is on sustainability, embracing product End of Life (including recycling) and resource efficiency as the country moves towards a circular economy. The confederation recognises the need to transform the British economy to one with sustainability at its heart. It will be looking to engage with the Government from the earliest stages to jointly address the considerable challenges involved. Jonathan Hindle states: “We must keep on reminding the Government of the importance of British furniture manufacturing to the economy – an industry of around 8000 businesses employing upwards of 106,000 people across the UK and producing more than £10b worth of product.” britishfurnitureconfederation.org.uk

The latest edition of Alphacam, from Vero Software – the world’s number one CAM developer – is rich with new features ranging across the modules, making it easier to use and improve productivity.

Alphacam 2017 R1 enhances simulation and automation Amongst the new and enhanced functionality are user interface improvements, new 3D machining command, updates to machining cycles, sawing enhancements, simulation updates, Automation Manager improvements and new CAD files and versions. The overall user experience has been augmented in a number of ways, including restyled dialogs to provide a more intuitive layout, with images and tooltips included to help the user. An example is the new 3D Machining dialog which provides the interface to multiple machining strategies in a consistent manner. Strategies available in the 3D Machining command are: Along Intersection; Constant Cusp; Cylindrical Parallel; Cylindrical Profiling; Drive Curves; and Z Contour Roughing. The Work Plane Properties option in the Project Manager displays a window with a grid containing details of the workplanes in the active drawing, such as the name and offset number, which can also be edited in the grid. Additionally, it is now possible to rename the move clamp/ fixture operation in the Quick Edit window. A new option in Drawing Notes means the Add-ins dialog will only be displayed if the opened drawing file already contains notes. In Machining, the Cylindrical Parallel strategy now gives the option of setting the width of cut as a distance, and when editing settings, the Drawing Area will update with a preview of the tool and holder, if applicable. The machining area is indicated by a transparent shaded region around the part that is automatically updated when settings are changed in the dialog, allowing the user to visualise the effect that a change has on the operation. Alphacam Router now includes improved foul avoidance for sawing. Previously when using a saw to cut parts, the risk of fouling other parts was increased due to the size of the blade. Alphacam 2017 R1 sawing operations now checks for fouling against all geometries

selected for the same operation, resulting in toolpaths being trimmed, if necessary. This means that parts can be laid out on a sheet and all sawn as the same operation, using the automatic fouling check. The operator can use the new path extensions tool with options for extending saw paths by either, Distance, to Boundary or Pick Point, with reversing options. For Simulator, the new release sees XY configurations supported on both the head and table. The transfer of five-axis toolpaths between Alphacam and the simulator has been optimised, meaning that complex operations containing toolpaths comprising thousands of individual elements are much faster. Furthermore, if program stops are included in the operation, they will now be recognised. All these improvements make the user experience more realistic and speed up the simulation process. Automation Manager sees several new options that provide flexibility and performance improvements. These include: Feature Extraction – From Faces, an option that enables the user

to extract the solid body outline of the part; for non-nested job files the From Job option is now available in the Machining Order drop-down menu in the Processing Tab. This is now set as the default selection for non-nested job files. In addition, Alphacam 2017 R1 gives the ability to copy and paste styles in the layer mapping set-up tree by right-clicking and selecting Copy or Paste on the menu. Settings are retained when copying, which enhances efficiency by removing the need to re-apply settings each time a style is applied to a layer. It is also possible to copy and paste a complete set-up, if required. General enhancements Work Volume support has been added for the Parametric Sketcher – useful with many post processors that require the work volume dimensions for the NC controller. User configurable Default Layer Setting – useful when creating designs with set layer configurations. Improved Solid Model Assembly Splitting Support for SolidWorks and Solid Edge

assemblies. The Area Estimate routine has been improved to take account of drilled holes. Alphacam’s Network License Profiles allow users to save their own selection of system and module licenses as a single profile, making it quick and easy to select pre-defined license options. For example, all network licensing users can create their own set of License Profiles and copy them to a shared folder on a nominated network PC, ensuring that all users can access the same ones. A particular profile can be specified when Profiles are being configured, or an option can be checked to select one from the list displayed when the licensed application is run. verosoftware.com alphacam.com

An East Yorkshire staircase manufacturer has purchased a second wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT), after the team was so impressed with the quality and efficiency of the first heater.

Staircase maker steps up investment by purchasing two WWT heaters TK Stairs is one of the UK’s largest direct to customer staircase manufacturers, supplying to both trade and public since it started in 2003. The business moved to its larger current premises last year, and immediately invested in a WT15 from WWT to heat its machine area, one of three main areas in its 30,000ft2 premises. A year on, and the company has been so impressed with the heater that it has purchased another WT15 for the assembly area. MD, Kevin Parsons explains: “We already had a wood waste heater, from a different manufacturer, which worked fine in our old premises when it had a much smaller area to heat – but it just wasn’t up to the job when we moved to our new larger premises, so we re-utilised it by moving it into the assembly area and bought the new WT15 to use in the machine area instead. “However, once we’d seen how efficient the heater from WWT was, we realised it would be better to invest in a second WT15 for the assembly area, rather than rely on our existing heater, as there was simply no comparison in quality and efficiency.” The investment in wood waste heaters will save the business money on both waste disposal and heating bills. Before moving to biomass technology, the company was spending

FP279 V2.indd 68

around £150 a week on skips to remove its wood offcuts and other wood waste. The business tries to be as economical with its wood waste as possible, by also compressing its sawdust into briquettes, which burn well in the wood waste heaters.

Kevin says: “We’re delighted with the service received from WWT, and think the company’s products are second to none. We’re not surprised to hear that all the wood waste heaters they’ve ever produced are still in operation today. We’d have never guessed that there’d be that much difference between the quality of manufacturers machines, and are so glad that we’ve purchased our latest ones from WWT!” WWT offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, WWT is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor of Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

Parlour Farm’s perfectly finished handmade kitchens using Teknos coatings

Cotswolds-based company Parlour Farm has been working with Teknos GBI for almost 15 years. It offers bespoke, handmade kitchens and expects its coatings to offer a superior finish to complement their products. MD Dino Mussell explains further: “We design, sell, manufacture and install totally bespoke cabinetry. Our factory is based in Cirencester along with our showroom, which is one of the largest in the country.” As well as kitchens, Parlour Farm also manufactures boot rooms, studies, wine stores, bedrooms and utilities. Its products experience some intense usage after installation, meaning that any finishes have to withstand tough conditions to protect the materials underneath and keep the products beautiful for years. Dino adds: “One of the principal reasons we use Teknos coatings for industrial wood is that they are some of the most hard-wearing external paints on the market. Stunning, tailor-made furniture has to be functional too and we apply Teknos products, confident that our customers will love the finish as much as we do.” A key feature of Teknos paints, is their ability to expand and contract as ambient temperatures vary. Many of Parlour Farm’s products are constructed from oak which is particularly sensitive to moisture and UV discoloration, making the protection of this material all the more important for the company. Furthermore, the flexing of timber over the seasons is especially incompatible with solvent-based coatings, as they embrittle with aging. Water-borne coatings like those in the Teknos range however, can accommodate the natural movement of timber. To ensure a perfect finish to its products, Parlour Farm Kitchens uses Teknoseal 4000, a clear, water-based end grain sealer for its raw timber. The company then applies a spray primer – Aquaprimer 3130 – which provides excellent grain filling and sanding, a high film build and can be used on
