Comment The twin powerhouse events of innovation in furniture and joinery production – Interzum and Ligna – are drawing ever closer. In this issue, we take a final look at some of the key protagonists with our final preview in this issue. On the ground in Germany we will have our biggest team to date reporting from both shows. At Easter, we welcomed Hannah Frackiewicz back to the editorial team after a couple of years away and Interzum will be her first port of call before getting out and about in the coming months. In this issue, we feature a fascinating collection of installation articles looking at companies which make, amongst other things: doors and door linings, fine furniture, medical cabinetry, windows, theatre sets, kbb furniture and timber framing; and examine how they successfully tackled a variety of issues needed to strengthen their businesses. Two other pleasingly strong elements of this particular issue are the Cabinet Fittings and Solid Wood Processing features. Fittings development does seem to have been relatively quiet in recent months but it now seems as though a lot more innovation is materialising into products and creative solutions. We look
at some of the best new introductions in the Cabinet Fittings feature. As always, our Solid Wood Processing feature delivers a tranche of insight and innovation from top suppliers. In our Profile this month, we meet up with Lawcris, the wood-based panel products, laminates and edgings specialist based in Leeds, which celebrated 35 years of independent strength in March. We talk to chairman Chris Hopton about where and how it all began, today’s set up and the outlook for the business. Enjoy the issue.

OSB in the lead Latest statistics have highlighted that sales of OSB in the UK have exceeded those of imported softwood plywood for the first time. This indication is derived from Norbord’s own production and sales figures of SterlingOSB, plus OSB statistics available from EuroStat and data on plywood imports from HM Revenues & Customs. “Our latest analysis, based on year-to-date November statistics, shows a definite rise in OSB substitution over plywood,” says Theresa-Marie McConnachie, Norbord’s business intelligence manager. “The latest monthly update from the Timber Trade Federation, Timber Statistics February 2017, backs up our view that OSB has overtaken plywood in the UK as it highlights how year-to-date November softwood plywood imports are down.” In the 11 months from January to November 2016, softwood plywood imports have decreased by 2.5% compared to the same period in 2015. In comparison, OSB imports dropped during the January to November 2016 period, posting over 5% decrease in volume compared to the same period in 2015. The TTF Statistics also highlights that OSB exports increased by over 19% in the same period. norbord.co.uk/products/sterling-osb

FIRA-CMA’s capabilities grow in the Far East FIRA International’s testing facility in Hong Kong has been bolstered by an accreditation to test storage furniture, specifically the performance of cabinets to BS 4875-7: 2006 and ISO 7170: 2005. “Broadening the scope of testing solutions offered by FIRA-CMA brings wider benefits to UK retailers, importers and specifiers with business interests in the Far East,” says Phil Reynolds, general manager at FIRA International. “Utilising the local Hong Kong lab saves time and costs in shipping products over to the UK for testing. PWS is celebrating after scooping two awards in two weeks, in recognition of its manufacturing expertise and contribution to the local economy. At the North East Business Awards, PWS Worksurfaces received the Manufacturing Award for the Durham, South Tyneside and Sunderland region. Facing strong competition, including Siemens, the application process was stringent. Once shortlisted, three judges visited all finalists, and spent an afternoon in PWS’ Worksurfaces factory and Design Centre, to fully appreciate and endorse the application. The North East Business Awards take place across three regions, so PWS Worksurfaces will now go forward to the North East Area
Awards event at the end of April. The company’s second accolade is the Company Of The Year, at the recent Make Your Mark Awards. With over 250 companies operating from Aycliffe Business Park, this award honours the impact and contribution PWS makes to the local Durham economy. John Lennon, managing director at PWS, comments: “We are delighted to be Company Of The Year. It is a great honour to be recognised for our manufacturing expertise, contribution to the local economy, and our commitment to investment, not forgetting the wonderful support of our staff who helped to raise a record-breaking £314,000 for Phoenix House, the Help For Heroes Recovery Centre at Catterick Garrison.” pws.co.uk

Lawcris has an enviable reputation as one of the most successful independent companies supplying panels and panel services to the UK market – Furniture & Joinery Production editor John Legg visited the Leeds business to find out how the company continues to define itself, 35 years on.
Lawcris’ independent strength still the key after 35 years Since the 1960s chipboard and MDF in myriad forms have become the go-to materials for furniture manufacturers. In the decades that followed, the growth in sheet material popularity fuelled by lower prices made conditions ideal for independent panel distributors to flourish – Lawcris was one such business. Across the UK, in practically every house and every workplace, furniture and fixtures made from wood-based panels are ubiquitous. In almost every room or space, panel-based furniture has become the norm. But in the 1940s and 1950s, a particle-board kitchen was something only the very wealthy could dream
of owning – in the same way that some of the high-end solid surfacing options were a few years ago. Roll forward to the 1980s, and as chipboard manufacturing output grew, market prices fell and a realistic mass-market option had become a reality. Against that backdrop, companies such as Lawcris established themselves to supply panels to manufacturers. The flexibility and diversity of chipboard and other wood-based panels – when shaped, edged and formed – is undeniable, making it today one of the most popular and efficient ways of creating a vast array of furniture types. Wood-based panels really are the unsung
heroes of our industry and an incredible success story – and companies such as Lawcris are pivotal as a bridge between furniture manufacturers and the board producers. Where it all started Back in March this year, Lawcris celebrated its 35th year. The company we know today started in a modest manner by Chris Hopton and Simon Hall in a small house and 3000ft2 rented warehouse in Burrell Street, Wakefield.
“35 years on and Lawcris is a successful, strong and growing business, uniquely placed to meet the diverse, ever-changing needs of the market.”

Chris Hopton, Lawcris chairman, says: “When we first started the business, my big gest dream was to expand the company to ten staff members and two delivery lorries, with the ultimate goal of turning over £1m. 35 years on and Lawcris is a successful, strong and growing business, uniquely placed to meet the diverse, ever-changing needs of the market. We have 215 staff, over 40 delivery wagons and last year the company turned over £72m. “I think if someone had said 35 years ago that Lawcris would someday become one of the UK’s largest panel product suppliers, we would have laughed out loud! When starting out back in 1982, where we operated out of a two-up, two-down house on Peterson Street in Wakefield and a small rented warehouse – we just wanted to make ends meet.” By 1992, Lawcris had outgrown three premises and in the same year, decided to make a move to Leeds. In the late 1990s, Leeds was fast becoming G Main image: The current Lawcris premises at Cross Green Industrial Estate in Leeds Above: Lawcris’ impressive Panel Depot

a key economic hub of UK industry. The company’s growth reflected the economic inflation of the time and in 2001, Lawcris moved to Cross Green Industrial Estate. This logistically lucrative location, with close access to the M62 and M1 proved a wise decision. In 2014, the company made its latest move to its current location, a 156,000ft2 premises within another area of the Cross Green Industrial Estate. Customer-oriented business Today, Lawcris stands as one of the most respected and trusted businesses supplying a broad range of panel products, accessories and services with over 215 employees, operating out of four facilities which combine to more than 200,000ft2. The main facility holds around £4m-worth of stock. One of the key strengths of the business over that last 35 years has been their positive, customer-oriented stance – the business runs an effective 24-hour site, with a sales team which operates from 7.30am until 6pm throughout the week. There is also a next day delivery promise for orders placed before 6pm to an area covering a large part of the UK mainland. The company’s forty-plus fleet of trucks travels to around 500 customers per day all across the UK, and all vehicles are fitted with a TOMTOM system which enables the company to track vehicles in real time keeping customers accurately informed about deliveries.

Lawcris services From an early stage, Lawcris realised that just providing raw boards was only going to take the business so far – and by providing a range of in-house services was a huge gain for its customers. Known as Creative CNC, Lawcris’ cut and edge department has been a key asset for more than 30 years providing a precise cutting, machining and edging service for a wide range of customers. This area of the business has undergone a £750,000 investment with brand new, state-of-the-art machinery including two new beam saws and a new edgeband slitting machine. “Whether its single panels or large production runs, Lawcris’ highly experienced team allied with the most up-to-date technology provides a highly efficient resource for designers and G

manufacturers, whatever the application. The company’s Bonded Boards service offer rapid turnaround of bonded laminate panels from its impressively stocked and beautifully clean warehouse environment. Panel sizes of up to 3660 x 1525mm can be pressed onto boards of up to 60mm in thickness and the company works hand-in-hand with the world’s leading laminate suppliers including Egger, Kronospan, Resopal and Pfleiderer. While some suppliers may have ordinary trade counters, Lawcris, as one might hope, has a singularly impressive option to help fulfil customers’ requirements for accessories and complementary products – essentially providing a one-stop-shop for designers, manufacturers, local tradesmen and DIYers – a superb facility. The Panel Depot is a relatively recent introduction – it’s a grand showroom which houses the biggest range of decorative surface samples in the area in a really clear and easy-tovisualise manner. The extensive range of products in store at the Panel Depot includes worktops, flooring, doors, slatwall boards, wetwall panels, fixtures, fittings, adhesives and a really full variety of products on special offer plus invaluable trade advice from Lawcris professionals.
The recently commissioned edgeband slitter enables total customer flexibility
Independent thinking One of Lawcris’ strengths is its independent stance which allows the company to react quickly to market requirements and update its products and services to benefit its customers. “We pride ourselves on our independent strength. We have the opportunity to make quick decisions to revise our product offering and change our services to benefit our customers instantaneously, which in turn, really gives us the edge,” explains Chris. “Our unique ability to stand on our own two feet is paramount to our survival and thoroughly secures the future of Lawcris.” The company’s success has been commended in the annual Timber Trades Journal awards, winning Panel Trader of the Year, not once, but twice in recent years. Furthermore, after the release of their new
website, Lawcris was awarded the accolade of Website of the Year in 2016 – an acknowledgment of the company’s endeavour to keep up with a changing technological landscape. Over the last 35 years, Lawcris has successfully developed its business to remain not just relevant, but as an indispensable resource for our country’s many furniture manufacturers. Spend an hour visiting the Leeds business and it is clear to see that the spirit which began the business and drove its formative years, is very much in evidence all across the company. Lawcris today is a strong, independent, dynamic and customer-oriented business whose sole aim is to provide an exceptional range of products to its customers in a highly efficient manner – something it does with aplomb. 0113 217 7177 lawcris.co.uk

A joinery company has developed a specialist subcontract horizontal routing service on doors and door linings for property developers, architects and builders.
Joinery company finds horizontal routing niche with Alphacam Sylwester Przybylski, owner of Tomasz Valentine, relies on Alphacam, from Vero Software, to ensure it always meets its twoto-four-day turnaround, nationwide. He says: “It would take a skilled cabinet-maker or joiner around 45 minutes to route out the holes for locks and hinges by hand. With Alphacam, it takes around five minutes to program them and another five minutes for the machining. When we’re working on a number of doors, each one only takes five minutes, as the program is already set up.” And he says the corresponding routing on the door linings is a perfect match every time. “Using Alphacam is not only much faster, but we know it’s always going to be completely accurate.” The company also provides an assembly service, where clients send their doors and ironmongery to them. “We carry out the horizontal routing, install the locks and hinges and send the completed doors and linings to site.” He decided to set up what he believes is the unique service after experiencing first-hand how long it takes to route out mortise locks and hinges on site. “As a joiner myself, I know how tedious the process is, and when I began to research setting up a system to carry out the work as a sub-contractor for builders and architects, I couldn’t find any other company doing it. “Large building companies carry out the cutting for themselves, but I’ve not come across anyone other than us providing it as a subcontract service.” He says successful horizontal routing requires considerable experience, as it involves pinpoint accuracy at a position that is floating off the bed of the CNC router. He continues: “But with Alphacam we can program the height of the horizontal position to get an exact finish.”
F&JP_283pre.indd 18
“Using Alphacam is not only much faster, but we know it’s always going to be completely accurate.” His choice of router also speeds up the process – the company has a three-axis Italian Tornado Bulleri 3721 machine tool with carousel toolchanger. “We needed a machine with a large bed as we work with 2050 x 2800mm MFC Jumbo board.” The router is currently programmed with Alphacam Standard, but Tomasz Valentine is intending to invest in a five-axis router later this year, which will mean upgrading the software to Alphacam Ultimate. Sylwester says the company would not be able to provide the service without Alphacam. “In fact, without Alphacam, we wouldn’t have a business at all. It’s so quick and easy to program. The old saying ‘time is money’ is very true, and Alphacam saves us both.” As well as the horizontal routing service, it also produces a range of cabinetry and staircases, and nests all its kitchen and bedroom furniture using the software’s powerful nesting functionality. “Alphacam cuts each full MFC Jumbo sheet in eight minutes, with all the cam and dowel holes and features, so what’s coming off the CNC machine is ready for the edgebander and assembly.” Tomasz Valentine also uses Alphacam Aspire for engraving
and signwriting, and, again, he says it could not provide that part of the service without Alphacam. “We can see the transitions immediately on screen, along with the machining simulation, which helps us achieve our goal quickly and accurately.” Another of the company’s aims is to move purely to manufacturing, as Sylwester says Alphacam carries out the work of several employees in its niche market. “We can produce 60 doors in eight hours, whereas a cabinetmaker could perhaps do 12 doors in a day at a push. And we can guarantee 100% accuracy every time, which is impossible by hand.” The software also helps produce an accurate quote for its full range of woodworking products. “When we receive an enquiry, I program the component in Alphacam, which gives an accurate machining time.” In conclusion, Sylwester Przybylski says Tomasz Valentine – operating with eight employees out of a 600m2 workshop in Park Royal, London – shows that Alphacam is not just for big manufacturers. Sylwester adds: “As a small company, it makes a massive difference to our profitability, and actually makes the difference that keeps us in business. We need to be accurate, fast and competitive. And that’s what Alphacam gives us.” alphacam.com verosoftware.com

When The Theatre Royal Plymouth grew tired of receiving faulty-manufactured set pieces from an outsourced company, it decided to take the process in-house, with its very own CNC machine. Felder was on hand at every step of the way . . .
It’s on with the show for Theatre Royal Plymouth
Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) produces and co-produces with some of the best artists and theatre producers nationally and internationally, bringing the best performances and shows to the South-west. Alongside putting on its own shows, the Production and Learning Centre at TRP also does a lot of work in the local community running classes in more than 50 schools as well as afterschool classes and production workshops with over 500 members. It also runs the People’s Company, which offers playwriting and one-off summer productions for people that would not otherwise have any access to classes, as well as the Voices Choir and Our Space, which assists people with drug- and alcohol-related issues, as well as homelessness.
“The highly versatile machine is perfect for our team of designers. The speed of getting people working on the machine has been fantastic and what we have been able to achieve so far has blown me away.” In the past, TRP would pay for another company with a CNC machine to create parts of its sets, but was finding on occasions that there were mistakes in some of the pieces that it had ordered. This meant they would have to be sent back and done again, causing delays in TRP’s already-strict production timelines. To solve this problem, TRP decided it was time to purchase its first CNC machine. Head of workshop, Brendan Cusack, says: “To achieve everything we wanted, we needed a machine that runs and runs. We needed a tank and that is exactly what we got!” After a lot of research, the company decided that the profit H08 from Felder’s Format-4 range was the machine for TRP. Brendan comments: “From

the very beginning, Felder got us – they took the time to listen to what we wanted and tuned into what we needed.” He continues: “The highly versatile machine is perfect for our team of designers. The speed of getting people working on the machine has been fantastic and what we have been able to achieve so far has blown me away.” Since getting its profit H08, TRP has not only been able to build its own sets, but has been able to work on commercial set-building projects, like building palm trees and store fronts for West End shows and bespoke art pieces for the Tate. felder-group.co.uk 01908 635000

A new CEHISA Pro-12 edgebander from leading distributor Daltons Wadkin has increased product quality and workflow efficiency at Somerset-based Intrafit.
CEHISA – perfect fit for Intrafit
Founded in 2000, Intrafit specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of custom cabinetry for dental and medical establishments. The company has built a strong reputation for delivering the highest quality products using superior-grade components built by experienced craftsmen. 17 years on and the company is expanding into kitchen manufacturing, now accounting for some 25% of the production. Director Hugh Boswell and his team visited the W16 exhibition to vet possible replacements for the company’s existing edgebander. “We needed to produce a higher quality edged door than we could produce on our existing egdebander. We went to the W16 show with an open mind. After looking at several machines, we narrowed it down to the CEHISA and two others,” comments Hugh. “When we looked into the finer details, build quality and general effectiveness, the CEHISA fitted the bill perfectly. “We mainly use EVA glue switching between white and black colours depending on the job,” Hugh continues. “It was essential that we could quickly and efficiently swap between colours without having to spend hours purging the glue pot of the old glue colour – a particular problem when going from black to white glue.” The CEHISA Pro-12 was supplied with two DUO-MELT glue pots, each capable of operating
F&JP_283pre.indd 20
with EVA or PUR glue. One is kept for white adhesive, the other for darker colours. Swapping the pots takes just 15 minutes. Set-up for short runs or replacement panels can now be done quickly, reacting to site demands keeping the installation on schedule. The unique DUO-MELT unit developed by CEHISA offers a number of advantages over traditional units. Alex Dalton of Daltons Wadkin explains: “The main advantage of the DUO-MELT is the ability to quickly and easily swap between EVA and PUR adhesive using the same glue pot. A quick-drain function empties the contents of the pot in a just a few minutes before the next glue type can be added.” Of course, the CEHISA Pro-12 offers far more advantages beyond the glue pot. Working with coiled edging from 0.4 to 3mm, and solid edging up to 8mm, the Pro-12 is equipped with premilling, end trimming, top and bottom trimming, corner rounding, radius scrapers, glue scrapers and buffing unit. The corner rounding unit features separate working heads for the top and bottom corners for a superior finish even at higher feed speeds.
An intuitive 10in touch screen control provides the operator with quick access for setting the powered rise and fall (for panel thicknesses between 8 and 60mm), engagement of working units, fault diagnostics and more. For ultimate efficiency, the CEHISA Pro range offers optional automatic setting between either two or five pre-set tape thicknesses. The operator can switch between saved programs using the touch screen and the machine automatically sets the working units. “We have been operating the CEHISA for around five months now. Before the CEHISA, we had to spend a significant amount of time finishing the doors by hand. Now, the product comes off the CEHISA and it is ready to fit,” enthuses Hugh. “It has streamlined our production and assembly area completely.” Customers can see the CEHISA range of models, including the Pro-12, on demonstration at the Daltons Wadkin purpose-built showroom in Nottingham. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com daltonswadkin.com

Weatherfast turns waste wooden pallets into free factory heating with help from Wood Waste Technology.
Weatherfast turns up the heat A manufacturing company will no longer have heating and waste disposal bills going through the roof since buying a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Weatherfast manufactures and supplies a wide range of high-performance Fatra PVC membrane steel in sheet or coil form for use in the roofing industry. Set up five years ago, the business is run from its 8000m2 factory in Great Barr, Birmingham. The directors at Weatherfast started to research the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater once they realised the business was spending around £500 a month to heat the factory during the winter, and about £300 a month to have its wood waste, including redundant wooden pallets and packaging, removed. Director Orry White explains: “We soon realised that investing in a wood waste heater would pay back really quickly, as we could burn the waste wooden pallets to provide free factory heating – saving the business around £800 a month.”
“I can highly recommend Wood Waste Technology’s products and service – we’ve definitely made the right decision with this investment.”
Orry searched the internet for wood waste heater manufacturers and contacted Kurt Cockroft, managing director at Wood Waste Technology, who arranged for Orry and the team to go and visit a neighbouring company that had already invested in one of Wood Waste Technology’s biomass systems. Following more information and a site survey, the team at Weatherfast purchased a WT15 towards the end of last year, and Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed it a few weeks before Christmas. Orry says: “We’ve been really impressed with the wood waste heater so far. We have to walk through another factory to enter ours, and the difference in temperature is really noticeable, as you leave their cold factory and walk into our lovely warm area. I can highly recommend Wood Waste Technology’s products and service – we’ve definitely made the right decision with this investment.” Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted to have customers who are so pleased with their wood waste heaters and boilers that they’re happy
F&JP_283pre.indd 21
for other businesses to visit them to see our biomass technology working in situ. We’re really proud of the good reputation our heaters have developed, as every wood waste heater we’ve ever sold is still in operation today, and it’s been a pleasure helping Weatherfast save money on its business expenses.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new wood waste heaters and boilers, the company also services all types
of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com

A recent major investment plan has taken place at Harmony Timber Solutions, which has resulted in the phase one purchase of two new Stromab Fast 500 programmable cross cut saws from JJ Smith.
Double investment for Harmony Timber Solutions Harmony Timber Solutions is proud of its reputation within the timber frame industry as both a practitioner and innovator, supporting developers, self-builders and specialist builders. It assists with development and construction of timber frame houses, buildings and other construction projects, even down to the final timber roof truss or metal web floor joist. From its manufacturing facilities in Canterbury, Kent and Wicklow, Ireland, it is able to supply its products throughout the UK and Ireland. Due to the company’s continued growth, and to help maintain high levels of quality and service, a recent major investment plan has taken place which has resulted in the phase one purchase of two new Stromab Fast 500 programmable cross cut saws from JJ Smith. While both the Canterbury and Wicklow factories already had cross-cutting capabilities, it became clear to the management team headed up by managing director Garret Dempsey, that it needed to dramatically increase production of cut parts to keep up with demand. As a result of visiting a UK trade show, production manager Martin Williams contacted JJ Smith to discuss Harmony’s production requirements. At this point, it was suggested that Martin and his team should visit JJ Smith’s Liverpool showroom to view the various different cross-cutting solutions it could offer. Martin comments: “From our initial conversations to the visit to see the machines in operation, it was clear that JJ Smith had a full understanding of what we needed and their vast experience in the timber frame sector was a major contributing factor.” Following various tests and demonstrations, it was decided that the correct machine would be

a Stromab Fast 500 with a 6m loading capacity. This is one of the latest additions to the Stromab range incorporating an optimised clamping and cutting cycle, innovative variable geometry cutting system meaning production output can be 20% more than on standard saws. Other key features include heavy duty rack and pinion drive of the pusher fence to give precise, repeat positioning accuracy, pneumatic side and top pressures, a cutting capacity of up to 390mm wide x 150mm high and the latest generation user-friendly 12in industrial high resolution, colour graphic touch-screen controller. Options that were added include JJ Smith’s own Design2wood timber optimisation software that gives Harmony the facility to download
drawings directly to the machine. In addition, it also provides information for an outfeed monitor which displays the cut length and actual part identification. An order was confirmed for two machines, one for each factory, and both were delivered and installed on schedule in just four weeks. Martin Williams says: “From the point of order right through to delivery and installation everything was handled in a professional manner by JJ Smith. The machines are working extremely well and have significantly increased the production of our cut parts. Also the Design2wood software has provided us with the facility to pre-optimise our jobs and order our stock timber to minimise the waste.” Phase two of the project is already well under way and involves the installation of an MBA Mobi One combined timber frame assembly station for walls, along with a Butterfly Table which have also been ordered from JJ Smith and will be installed in early June. JJ Smith’s sales director, Ian Stanley, comments: “The UK housing market has not been delivering enough houses in the last few years, with commentators suggesting that we have an annual shortfall of around 100,000 units a year. “This, combined with the challenges of a tight and ageing market for the construction trades, means that the benefits of off-site construction including increased productivity, reduced time on site and higher quality, are being sought out by more housing developers. This is benefiting established companies, such as Harmony Timber Frame, who we are delighted to be partnering on this project.” 0151 548 900 sales@jjsmith.co.uk jjsmith.co.uk

Leading dust extraction specialist Dust Control Systems (DCS) has recently completed a major installation for J & J Ormerod, one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture . . .
JJO praises DCS for festive service
A section of JJO’s production line with newly installed ductwork and Ecogate dampers
With a history stretching back almost 150 years, JJO (J & J Ormerod) has developed from its roots as a small family joinery business into a multi-million pound operation, with over a million square feet of production and warehousing facilities. Although JJO now employs around 400 staff at its bases across Lancashire’s Rossendale Valley, the company still retains its family business ethos and counts many third-generation employees amongst the workforce, including joint managing directors Stephen and Lee Greenhalgh whose grandfather, Ellis Greenhalgh, was apprenticed to the original Ormerod brothers, after whom the company was named. JJO’s production facility, in Bacup, houses the latest in specialist production machinery and manufactures furniture for over 900 kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms a week. For many years, JJO has operated an ongoing environmental policy to minimise waste, maximise recycling, and to reduce energy consumption. The company’s environmental
diligence has been recognised on many occasions with industry awards and, in December 2015, JJO completed its registration for ISO 50001 which requires an organisation to demonstrate that it has improved its energy performance. The main objective of ISO 50001 is to continuously improve energy-related performance and energy efficiency, and to identify energy reduction opportunities. “One of our key objectives was to improve the efficiency of the dust extraction system,” says Bob Myers, production director at JJO. “DCS has maintained our dust extraction plant and taken care of LEV testing for many years, and we invited them to put forward a proposal to design and install a completely new system which would extract efficiently from the whole site.” Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, continues: “Over the years, JJO has increased production capacity with investments in new machinery, and additional dust extraction equipment has been incorporated as necessary.
“Reliable, efficient extraction is essential to production, and this latest investment not only offers us reduced running costs, but will also cope with future requirements for increased levels of extraction.”

As a result, independent installations – with an assortment of extraction fans varying in size from 7.5kW to 45kW – were serving multiple woodworking machines and associated equipment.” In 2009, DCS installed energy-saving variable speed drive units to reduce energy consumption by controlling fan speeds, and JJO had benefited from significant savings on energy costs. However, as Melvyn Bathgate confirms: “It was clear that investment in a state-of-theart, centralised extraction system was now required to generate the energy efficiencies required, and it was also important to JJO that a new installation should accommodate further expansion in the future.” The proposal put forward by DCS was in fact for two identical modular extraction systems, located in a relatively confined space between two factory units, and adjacent to a 500m3 storage silo. Wood waste stored in the silo feeds a 2600kW Mawera biomass boiler which was installed in 2011, with support and financial assistance from the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The boiler provides heat for the whole site and, depending on the ambient temperature, can consume up to 70 tonnes of wood waste per week. Following site visits, and discussions with

INSTALLATIONS
Bob Myers and maintenance manager, Tony Devereux, JJO placed the order with DCS in October last year. As the short days of late December beckoned, the modular units arrived in Bacup, transported directly from Schuko’s factory in Germany. “We had allocated a three-week window for DCS to remove redundant equipment (which was to be recycled) and install the complete new system”, explains Tony Devereux. “Work started the week before the Christmas shutdown, continued through the festive period, and the installation was commissioned as we re-opened in January.” The bespoke system comprises two Schuko ECOVAR VALIDUS modular filter units, approximately 8m in height, 14m long and 2.5m wide, each capable of extracting over 95,000m3hr. These highly efficient units, fabricated from galvanised steel, are designed for negative pressure operation and incorporate an integrated, flow-optimised configuration of four 37kW fan units which are located ‘clean-side’ of the anti-static, polyester needle-felt tubular filter bags. The filter units are designed for 24/7 operation, and dust deposits are removed from the filter media by a regeneration cleaning train – continually traversing across the top of the filter bags. An arrangement of four 4kW cleaning fans generates a reverse airflow to remove dust from the filter media, and a pneumatic-mechanical shaker system releases any remaining deposits. All waste dust drops into the lower hopper section where a chain conveyor maintains a consistent flow of waste to the transfer fans which deliver the waste to a new cyclonic filter. From here, the material is transferred by a bucket elevator to the storage silo. In warmer months, when the volume of collected wood waste becomes surplus to the boiler’s requirements, material is automatically diverted from the filter

units directly to a bulk collection container. JJO normally operates a five-day, two-shift production schedule, but switches to 24-hour working as and when demand dictates. However, whatever the shift pattern, dust extraction is not required for all machines, all of the time. This variation in extraction requirement is, of course, commonplace in the woodworking industry and JJO was keen to maximise the efficiency of the new system by incorporating Ecogate Extractionon-Demand technology. DCS engineers installed new main ductwork throughout the factory and Ecogate dampers were fitted at all primary extraction points. The two extraction systems are both managed by identical control panels and, as well as electrical circuitry and controls for ancillary equipment such as rotary valve and chain conveyor, each cabinet includes an Ecogate GreenBOX 12 which constantly monitors machine use – automatically opening or closing the Ecogate dampers and adjusting extraction fan speeds, in real time, to match the continually changing volume requirement. As part of an ongoing £750,000 investment plan, which also includes the installation of a centralised compressor system, the new dust control measures will ensure that JJO continues to operate efficiently, and more than satisfy Health & Safety and Environmental legislation for the foreseeable future. “Reliable, efficient extraction is essential to production, and this latest investment not only offers us reduced running costs, but will also cope with future requirements for increased levels of extraction,” concludes Bob Myers. “As for DCS, I cannot fault the service from start to finish. The engineers were just brilliant – even working with helmet lights to ensure the project was completed on time, despite the short winter days.” 0800 040 7116 dcslimited.co.uk

Boere goes live at Ligna Customers see Boere as a leading company when talking about the perfect sanding solution. Whether it concerns calibrating of solid wood or finishing of thin veneer, Boere understands the customers’ wishes and translates them perfectly-manufactured machines. This not only goes for the processing of wood, but certainly also for non-wood materials, such as plastics, composite materials, insulation, imitation teak decks, HPL, rubber or fibre cement. These materials can be found among others in the automotive, façade, yacht-building and aerospace industries. It is exactly these industries which require very high-quality standards to its products and expect from Boere’s machines that they meet these quality standards as well. This enables Boere not only to develop new machines for new markets, but to bring to perfection its existing machines as well. A very good example is Boere’s wide-belt
sanding machine type, Sandrite. This machine was originally only meant for the sanding of solid wood. Now, this machine has been further engineered in such a way that, by using different options, the machine can be multi-functionally deployed. Equipped with two segmented sanding pads – integrated in the so-called combi unit: contact roller and sanding pad – among others, a very high-quality surface can be obtained when denibbing. Moreover, by using these (segmented) sanding pads in just one pass, a high finish can be obtained on veneered panels. Of course, this machine is also apt for calibrating by using its two contact rollers. Boere will demonstrate these versatile applications at Ligna by giving live demonstrations. Boere will also be performing a live demonstration of its renewed texturing brush machine, Select X-Line. Solid wooden and veneered panels can be worked across the woodgrain (scarved) and textured
either separately or in just one pass. In this way, the wood structure and its character will show up optimally. By playing with the adjustments of the different units such as the brushes or the cross-grain sanding unit, the depth of the texturing can be changed. New are the different scarving patterns, which can be set through the PLC touch screen of the machine. Thus the surface will be turned into the personal taste of
the customer or end-user. The result is a powerful, distinctive rustic look and feel of the product! Of course, Boere will also show the many other non-wood materials which have been sanded with a Boere wide-belt sanding machine. Boere is the specialist in delivering custom-made quality wide-belt sanding machines fully adapted to the customer’s wishes and needs. boere.nl/en
Striebig on show at Ligna Vertical sawing facilitates more than just the sizing cut of wood-based materials. This year, Striebig’s Ligna stand (hall 12, stand B29) will present this concept for itself and focus on the brand’s ‘diversity’. As well as presenting brand new innovations that are yet to be announced, the stand will also feature Striebig’s comprehensive range of vertical panel saws and customised solutions, highlighting the company’s ability to supply sawing solutions for the most demanding of projects. Sitting alongside the Compact, Control and Striebig 4D, Striebig will also be displaying optional equipment available to its customers. This will include the VSA scoring saw unit – a must for extending the service life of a saw blade and for ensuring damage to the edges is prevented – and Striebig’s grooving accessory (NVV) which enables hassle-free grooving and routing work to be performed on the vertical panel saw. Live demonstrations will also be taking place using a variety of panel materials in a range of sizes and thicknesses. Engineers and technical salesmen will also be on the stand to assist visitors further. Ardis finds the balance between nesting and sawing
Ardis Optimised Parts Production looks to align a whole production process with existing and new machinery. Serious attention is given to efficiency in both office preparation and production. Modern 3D CAD programs, used in the office, give the possibility to work out projects in every detail.
The result from design is taken over by the Ardis parts production software. Each part geometry is analysed for machining options. The optimisation chooses the best production strategy while looking for the right balance between material yield and machine efficiency. In addition to this Ardis

“Ardis provides the balance between sizing parts on the beam saw and completing the drilling process as a secondary step on a CNC drilling machine” provides the balance between sizing parts on the beam saw and completing the drilling process as a secondary step on a CNC drilling machine, as opposed to nesting the parts on a CNC and as a secondary step completing the drilling process using a drilling and dowelling machine. Top efficiency is ensured, thanks to the optimisation process automatically produced by Ardis. Ardis Optimisation from Belgium has been active in flat sheet optimisation since 1989. For many years Ardis exclusively developed sheet optimisation for saw cutting. In the past decade developments were oriented towards best material use and production time. Ardis Optimised Parts Production manages material availability (standard sheets and rest pieces); parts geometry (normal size, too big or too small for standard machining); production tools (saw cutting and nesting machines, edgebanders, routers, dowelling machines, carcass presses); work in process limitations (available workspace, transport and sorting); and shipment planning (due date for assembly).
Cloud solution for cut-to-size parts The dream of many cut-andedge contractors is to receive orders automatically over the internet – typically, a customer knows what he wants and would prefer to order whenever required 24/7, 365 days of a year. But how can he bring this dream to reality? ArdisWeb – described as a world first – will be unveiled at the upcoming Ligna event in Germany. Ardis says the web application can be fully integrated with the contractor’s website. The service centre can offer boards cut-tosize, edgebanding and basic machining. Orders are received ready for production, avoiding own service centre mistakes. The cloud application works on a computer, tablet and smart phone from Microsoft, Apple and Android. Bring an Excel file with board sizes and edge material along to Ardis’ booth – B83, hall 12 – and be surprised seeing how quick a complete set-up of a personal web application can be demonstrated. Very much in the spirit of the THINK WEINIG strategy, HOLZ-HER is presenting itself for the first time at LIGNA 2017, along with the Weinig Group in hall 27.
Perfect solutions right from the start
A complete range of machining – for both solid wood and derived timber products – will be presented by HOLZ-HER and the Weinig Group to Ligna’s specialist audience on a stand of around 4000m2. In the area of machining for derived timber products, trade fair visitors can not only find out about machinery using modern production techniques for wood machining, but in fact also experience for themselves what the advantages of a smart workshop means in furniture production. The new industry for ACCURA/LUMINA The new ACCURA and LUMINA Industry machines are equipped with the new Glu Jet PUR 2K for use with 2kg PUR glue sticks on the newly-developed changing station. Highquality furniture production starts with selection of the right machine. ACCURAte, professional edgebanding with no compromises, that is the benchmark of this new series. As an ACCURA Industry version, in addition to fully automatic operation, the machine also offers the Glu Jet PUR 2K glue station as standard, which enables the processing of large 2kg glue sticks that are available commercially from all leading glue manufacturers. The new glue station is designed as a changing station based on technology from the LUMINA series with HSK adapter.

The station can therefore easily be removed via a change-over carriage, which makes cleaning the glue application nozzle even easier. In addition, further Glu Jet stations can also be exchanged on the same machine and even combined with LTRONIC on the LUMINA Industry version to activate laser edging. With the Glu Jet PUR 2K, users can process 2kg PUR glue cartridges, which are significantly more economical than conventional PUR granules. The investment is worthwhile for customers who exclusively process PUR glues. With average usage in this area, the saving in terms of glue purchasing is at least 50%. The new vertical SECTOR 1255 and 1260 The new vertical panel saws from HOLZ-HER combine proven technology based on over 50 years of experience with a basic, solid design. Professional cutting technology could not be more space-saving. With a footprint from as little as 5m², this vertical panel saw is unbeatable in this area and saves you the cost of additional space. The SECTOR 1255 pro and the automatic model, the SECTOR 1260 automatic, are available with cutting lengths of 3300 to 6300mm. The cutting heights are between 1900
and 2200mm, depending on requirements. Their cutting depth is up to 60mm. The horizontal cut is set via a digital display with electrical microadjustment of measurement, which is included as standard. The sawing unit has automatic interface detection which means it can be automatically engaged at the touch of a button – a unique feature in this saw class. A pneumatic shift grate prevents sawing into the support strips, moving the support grate automatically, as required. The automatic version of the SECTOR 1260 is also available, offering even more efficient handling. In addition to all the features on the manual SECTOR 1255 machine, the SECTOR 1260 automatic can also plunge cut, saw, retract and return to the operator at the touch of a button. CNC nesting – the other way to saw In hall 27 at this year’s LIGNA, HOLZ-HER is showing what modern nesting technology has in common with high-precision gantry design. With the new DYNESTIC 7505, 7507 and 7532 gantry CNC machines, HOLZ-HER is moving the frontiers of nesting technology to completely new dimensions. Solid machine construction and technology at

the highest level ensure high production capacity and precisely produced workpieces. In addition to the individual machine in the ‘classic’ design, the new DYNESTIC models also fit into different automation environments very well. The ‘push’ version pushes the finished nest onto the conveyor belt and cleans the machine table for the next machining process. The ‘automatic’ version is ideal for high performance – even for lot sizes of one – in combination with the automatic HOLZ-HER STORE-MASTER 5110 panel handling system and the DYNESTIC 7532 lift and standard elevating table enable highly efficient machining of complete stacks of panels. Cabinets on CNC machines without any programming – is that possible? Yes, that will be possible in the future at HOLZHER with the new NEXTEC models. Derived from Next Technology, users can produce furniture even more easily and quickly with this new nesting technology – and all this without programming. Visitors to Ligna can experience the new NEXTEC for themselves. Select – position – ready – that’s the way to build furniture today! holzher.de

The SCM Group presents an impressive collection of new products on view in Hanover.
SCM Group at Ligna 2017 At Ligna 2017, SCM Group is to present more than 60 products out of its wide range, able to meet the needs of any type of company, from small local carpentry shops to large multinational corporations. In particular, following their extraordinary success during the Open House event held at the beginning of the year in the group’s headquarters in Rimini, Italy, the new Morbidelli Author M100 and M200 machining centres will be presented, ready to start the AuthoR-Evolution, along with additional new products shown in a world première and various other upgrades of the entire product line. At Ligna, SCM Group is to present a cell system that meets the needs for customised industrial production, implementing Industry 4.0 concepts. The chosen practical example is a cell system that produces furniture parts. The system’s capacity is approximately 8-10 sets per shift. It is an automated system, where control over the entire process – from raw panels to the finished piece – is absolute. It is a solution that stands out for its low operational costs, as it requires only a single operator; its minimum handling requirements, thus preventing production defects; and its ‘lean’ flow, with no interruptions, bottlenecks and extraordinary maintenance. It is a system that ensures high quality at low costs, extremely easy to run, even by an unskilled operator, and provides smart solutions, capable of producing a great variety of pieces, from the mass production of panels ready to be assembled to batch one production. All this is thanks to the use of standard machines, totally reliable, high-performing and easy to use and configure.
F&JP_283pre.indd 42
Showing a production of excellence SCM Group is to exhibit a large part of its products, from cell systems to classic machines, with plenty of new and upgraded products. For the first time, the group has chosen a single large stand to display its entire collection, in order to demonstrate the group’s strength. Machining and drilling centres On view for the first time will be the Morbidelli Author M100 and M200 machining centres, which have enjoyed great market success since their introduction. These are two machining centres featuring all-in-one technology, which offers companies of all sizes all that is necessary for the processing of wood and advanced materials.

High technology is used also in the SCM Accord 50 FX, a five-axis machining centre designed for multiple and innovative applications and thus granting the freedom to process workpieces up to 500mm high and made of various materials – solid wood, plastics, composites, resins and light alloys. Door and window frame solutions Also on display will be the SCM Accord WD, the flexible machining cell used in the production of door and window frames, and which, being fully automated, does not require the constant presence of an operator. Completing the collection is the SCM Superset NT throughfeed moulder, in a seven-heads composition and with new electronic control. Timber frame and SIP machining centres For the wood construction industry, SCM Group will exhibit the six-axis Routech Oikos machining centre, used for processing structural beams and wood elements of modular walls and a musthave for companies in this industry. Oikos can perform complex machining of beams with the kind of high precision offered only by numerically controlled machining centres. It also comes with a software application that allows intuitive programming for processing the most complex workpieces. Also on show in Hanover will be Monofast, a CMS exclusive and winning solution for automated production of complex objects such as gunstocks, pistol grips, eyewear and other small objects. Some space will be given to the TurboPower innovative array of gantry-type machining centres, offering high flexibility in performing a wide variety of ever-more complex processes
in the woodworking industry. The machines’ compact size poses no limits on their power but facilitates worktable handling when changing machining types. TurboPower is perfectly suitable for any furniture production sector, as well as for the production of stairs and musical instruments. Machines for small carpentry shops A large space within hall 13 is set aside for machines for small- and medium-sized companies. In this case as well, SCM Group introduces new products. The spotlight will be on the new Minimax Si 400 X circular saw with tilting blade. To be unveiled for the first time is also the Minimax ME40 edgebander, which accepts all finishing units and runs at high speeds ensuring productivity levels that are uncommon among machines intended for craftsmen and small carpentry shops. Large space will also be given to the entire range of the classic Invincible machines. Surface treatment Superfici machinery will be displayed, offering advanced solutions for painting panels, furniture parts and window and door frames, and focusing on flexibility and the use of latest-generation painting cycles. Heading the collection is Bravorobot, a painting robot system with a three-dimensional control of workpieces, for quality spraying of panels and even of custom shapes and complex edges. The Maestro robot is a first-rate complete solution for painting door and window frames. Especially noteworthy are the UV Led Matrix systems, marking the new frontier of UV curing, a smart choice in terms of energy consumption savings. 0115 977 0044 scmgroup.me.uk

Egger’s newly-launched decorative collection for the UK and Ireland furniture manufacturing sector is not just its biggest ever, but also presents the company’s unique ability to match its MFC, MDF, melamine and complementary products.
Worktops are a key part of Egger’s major product overhaul Central to the new décor collection is a range of ever-more-realistic, deep-textured surface decors for furniture makers. This innovative approach is also demonstrated in its worktop range – where it was the first wood-based panel manufacturer to offer synchronised pore worktops.
Launched last autumn, its revamped worktop range has had a major impact on the KBB industry – combining the natural look and feel of solid wood with all the durability, care and maintenance benefits of laminate. “The role of the kitchen is changing, with home owners increasingly looking for open plan spaces that are coordinated to create the right look and feel for multifunctional living,” says Egger’s head of décor development, Elliott Fairlie. “Creating a coordinated look requires materials that either match or complement the worktop. And because we also supply the materials that are made into splashbacks, doors, carcasses, shelving, end panels, upstands and plinths, the resources exist to bring that coordinated look together from a single supplier.” The decision to retain a tight postformed edge in the Contemporary range, rather than move completely over to the even more fashionable square-edge profile, reflects feedback from customers and installers that shows there remains a strong demand for this type of worktop. Using a high-density protective layer along the front of the core board creates an edge that is less susceptible to damage from impact, a vulnerable spot on some postformed worktops, whilst the tight 3mm radius on the postformed edge gives a contemporary look.
Launched last autumn, Eggers revamped worktop range has had a major impact on the KBB industry – combining the natural look and feel of solid wood with all the durability, care and maintenance benefits of laminate. For those looking for something even more on-trend, the new square-edge Premium range has a sharper, fashionable look and is available in 12 decors. The woodgrain and gloss decors are all 38mm, whilst the six stone and ceramic decors are available in a stylish 25mm thickness. As well as offering the sleeker, thinner worktop look that is growing more popular, it gives the opportunity to better-replicate the unique visual appearance of granite and stone. Premium tops are available in 4100 x 650mm single edged or 4100 x 920mm double edged, using 1.5mm ABS edging instead of 2mm to create an even more realistic look “This really is an area where details matter,” adds Elliott. “To provide an authentic look, the exposed ends of some of our woodgrain worktops can be finished off with end-grain edging to achieve the look of sawn timber. Or you can make a bold design statement with accent edging – a trend destined to really take off in 2017.” 01434 613359 elliott.fairlie@egger.com egger.com

GRASS will present a cross-section of its elegant/functional product portfolio, with individualisation being the key focus …
GRASS focuses on individualisation at interzum Individuality is the common denominator that links the different trends in modern home furnishing. Just as in fashion, consumers nowadays want to express their personality in their choice of furniture as well – whether they opt for the cool industrial look or a more inviting Scandinavian style. In order to meet these style requirements, furniture manufacturers need flexible and versatile components. GRASS movement systems are an ideal choice in this situation. A typical example is Nova Pro Scala, the drawer with individual configuration options, which was one of last year’s success drivers and will again be popular at interzum. However, the main focus of this year’s presentation at interzum remains a secret. But one thing is certain: in the setting of its unusual new exhibition stand, GRASS will present new products that are sure to be popular. The interzum exhibition takes place in Cologne from 16 to 19th May. The exhibition is the world’s leading trade exhibition for furniture makers and for interiors, and this year, again, new developments will follow one main theme – individuality. In addition to good functionality, furniture and interiors nowadays must also be capable of expressing a user’s personality. For a long time, the movement systems produced by GRASS have been designed exactly for this specific purpose. With its elegant and convenient drawer systems, GRASS offers furniture manufacturers the opportunity to design flexible products which continue the external

In addition to Nova Pro Scala, there will also be other highlights at interzum. “We have a wealth of new products – from dividing systems and new designs for hinges and flaps, through to additional individualisation options for existing products,” says Andreas Marosch, head of marketing at GRASS. Both the completely newly-developed exhibition stand and the product portfolio on display reflect what GRASS stands for: design, the option to individualise products, functionality and quality – these are all characteristics for which the company has been setting standards since its formation almost 70 years ago. Visitors to interzum will be able to visit GRASS and discover the systems’ unique selling points at stand E20/E21 in hall 7.1. grass.eu

In an age when we are experiencing more and more of the environment through screens and touchpads, the notion of ‘touch and feel’ is playing a growing role in the way we design our own four walls.
O
A Fi
Edging you won’t be able to keep your hands off The touch and feel on furniture edges is becoming increasingly important. We ‘grasp’ our environment, we have ‘everything at our fingertips’, but we also have ‘fear of contact’. Figures of speech show how important touching and feeling is to us. While our hands are gliding over smooth mobile displays more and more frequently – both at work and in leisure time – we love our homes to have furniture which is exciting and unusual to the touch. What customers want It is no coincidence that almost all board manufacturers offer their furniture surfaces in a variety of different textures. As such, there are many different types of embossing to match the board decor. After all, panels with a realistic stone look are also supposed to feel like real stones as much as possible. And the same goes for wooden-finish panels – the texture should be noticeable under the fingertips wherever possible. Realistic feel – even on the edges For Ostermann, it is always a challenge to make the ABS edging material as similar as possible to the furniture surface in terms of look and feel. “The best edge is always the one you don’t see!” is one of the edging specialist’s most important guiding principles. And a perfect look, of course, also always means the right feel. Only when edging and panel match do you get furnishings “cast from the same mould”. Five different wood textures Wood as a material represents nature, authenticity, high quality and a unique feel. However, solid wood is not suitable for all furnishings or applications.
And price also plays a role. The realistic wood patterns on the decorative furniture surfaces display an almost identical look and feel to real timber. Ostermann provides the edges in five different wood textures to ensure the perfect finish – from delicate wood pores and subtle ash pores, to an intense wooden structure and Linea structure, to the tangible effect of the Meandra finish. 17 different surfaces Ostermann offers a specific stone embossing finish to ensure the edges adapt to the stone decor. But classic surfaces such as smooth, high gloss and minipearl also blend harmoniously into the different panel finishes. A semi-rough Satin finish, a Textile structure, and a number of different glosses – from Supermatt to Excellent Gloss – round off the many different surfaces Ostermann offers for edging. Ostermann edging: the perfect panel ending The Ostermann experts are always striving to offer furniture edging as close as possible to new furniture surfaces in terms of look and feel. But only where it actually makes sense. Minipearl embossing and the classic Satin finish or Velvet structure continue to be the first choice when it comes to simple carcass edges or robust office furniture. Carpenters/cabinet-makers can visit the Ostermann online shop any time to see which edging is available for which embossing. ostermann.eu

After much speculation regarding the continuation of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in Great Britain, it has been confirmed that the tariffs will continue from June 2017, albeit it with an amended structure.
Ongoing commitment to the 20-year Government RHI scheme confirmed This is great news for the woodworking industry which remains in a prime position to benefit financially for many years to come. Paid for 20 years, index linked, the scheme rewards businesses which contribute towards the UK’s commitment to generating 15% of energy needs from renewable sources by 2020. Payments are made quarterly for 20 years for all the metered eligible heat generated from RHI-accredited biomass boilers. It makes for a very welcome additional income stream. And should the scheme be terminated in the future this cannot apply retrospectively. All accredited boilers will continue to benefit for the full 20 years. So strike while the iron is hot!
Of course, the RHI is not the only reason to adopt a modern, state-of-the-art biomass system. Most businesses in the woodworking industry create huge amounts of waste material, whether off-cuts, shavings or sawdust. Why pay to have this waste removed when you could be paid instead to burn it? How much is being spent on fossil fuels at present? If the factory or offices are heated using fossil fuels, this would be an unnecessary cost when free fuel is easily available from the manufacturing process. Are you already, or will you soon be paying ever-increasing carbon taxes? Added together, these costs can be a hefty burden to the business.
F&JP_283pre.indd 54
They could easily be substantially, or even completely, removed. Gas, oil, LPG or electricity would no longer be required for space heating, hot water or process heating needs. The thousands of pounds spent annually on skips and landfill could be dramatically reduced by using the waste wood as heating fuel. Reducing the use of fossil fuels reduces your carbon footprint, which is the only way to avoid paying carbon taxes. AFS Biomass is in the vanguard of the promotion and implementation of biomass heating systems. Working in partnership with ETA, the Austrian manufacturer of what many consider to be the most respected and reliable systems in the market today, AFS offers the design, installation, maintenance and emission monitoring of bespoke biomass heating systems throughout the UK. As one of the few Carbon Trust accredited suppliers in the UK, AFS Biomass has successfully installed systems nationwide from 50kW to 1mW, covering many sectors including furniture and kitchen manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies and more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients. AFS Biomass can also advise on the most suitable UNTHA wood shredders with which to prepare wood fuel. Now is the time to act for maximum benefit. Why not join the ever-increasing number of businesses adopting RHI-accredited biomass boilers and make the all-important investment decision possible for your business? afsbiomass.com

Mirka AOS-B cordless sander knows how to set standards Mirka’s AOS-B cordless sander, the smallest battery-driven spot repair sander on the market, has been awarded the Product Design prize at the prestigious Red Dot design awards. The award recognises the ergonomic, high performance and longevity of the product, delivering tangible benefits to end users in the automotive industry. This is the second time Mirka has won a Red Dot design award after its Mirka DEROS sander,
which launched in 2012, was awarded the Red Dot Industrial Design Award in 2014. The judges for this year’s award were particularly impressed with several of the Mirka AOS-B’s features including its lightweight ergonomic design that allows the tool to be moved easily from job to job and to be used for long periods of time without experiencing fatigue, and the sander’s consistent performance for the duration of its battery life, which can last up to 16
hours when used for spot repair applications. Craig Daycock, managing director of Mirka UK, says: “We’re delighted that the AOS-B has been recognised with the Red Dot design award. This win highlights our continued commitment to invest in the design and development of tools at our R&D department in Jeppo, Finland to provide our customers with the highest levels of performance, productivity and versatility.” mirka.co.uk

Matching the standards seen in similar window accessories, the Abberley range of internal door furniture is forged in high quality brass. It includes both traditional and modern designs in a wide range of colours to offer plenty of choice, with styling that corresponds precisely to Reddiseals’ sash and casement window components. This offers a significant advantage to joiners and property developers, who generally look to source products from a small number of reliable suppliers whilst trying to match the colours of all furniture required. The Abberley door furniture range includes eight different styles of handle including Swirl, Swirl Deco, Arch, Wedge, Dorsal, Dome, Tempo and Scroll, available on a variety of carefullychosen plates including rose, bathroom and lock plates. Victorian and beaded door knobs are also in the range, alongside a useful selection of colour-matched accessories such as latches and hinges. Internal door handles from the wellknown From the Anvil brand are also available from Reddiseals. Teresa Humphries, Reddiseals’ director and general manager, comments: “Having led the sash window component market for a long time and introduced a huge range to cater for casement windows five years ago, it’s a natural progression to now focus on providing internal

door furniture to perfectly match our window ranges. “We’re well established in the joinery market and known for the personable and knowledgeable service that we give joiners and developers on a daily basis. The Abberley door furniture range will be a welcome addition for our customers, making us a one-stop-shop for good quality window and door accessories that will colour match precisely.” 01905 791876 reddiseals.com

Hettich’s ArciTech – a new dimension
With Push-to-open Silent, opening and closing actions are equally convenient and satisfying
Hettich’s ArciTech premium drawer system has added a new dimension to the fitted furniture experience – from kitchens to living areas. With its build quality, smooth action and unparalleled range of options, it really stands apart. A single space is a much more flexible storage solution than several smaller spaces of equivalent volume. This is why wider drawers make sense, particularly in the kitchen. Combined with well-made and designed internal organisation, a wide drawer can transform the user’s experience. The technical challenge has been to create wide drawers which can handle the capacity and still perform. ArciTech has set the standard for wide drawers with its incredibly smooth action and stability, based on the Actro runner with industry-leading loading capacity up to 80kg. Larder units are another great solution to optimise the use of cabinet space – ArciTech internal drawers are ideal for this. There is no doubt that wider drawers attract more attention when open, and internal drawers are frequently on show, so it is vital to consider the internal aesthetics.
F&JP_283pre.indd 63
With this in mind, Hettich has added a champagne finish to the existing anthracite, powder-coated steel and stainless steel across all its ArciTech drawer formats. There is a strong move to metallic finishes such as copper and gold in the kitchen, and storage solutions need to keep pace. Champagne complements this new look particularly well. A choice of drawer heights and side options are critical if the kitchen is to offer that allimportant, custom-made factor. Hettich therefore offers various drawer side choices from railing to DesignSide (including glass) and a full suite of internal organisation solutions for all scenarios. A further point of difference is that ArciTech is now offered with Push-to-open Silent, which means the opening and closing actions are equally convenient and satisfying, no matter how wide the drawer or heavy the load. Push-to-open systems have, until now, required extra pressure on closure to overcome the opening mechanism, but Push-to-open Silent puts paid to that. From wide drawers to larder units, ArciTech ensures that high standards of design apply to the whole installation. hettich.com/uk_EN

The Grass Nova Pro brand has become synonymous with exceptional quality, stability and smooth-glide, double-wall drawers. Nova Pro Scala builds on this reputation for excellence, bringing yet more quality and versatility to customers. A number of innovations set the Nova Pro Scala system apart, demonstrating why the solution was recently recognised with a German Design Award: Space optimising to the maximum Whilst still retaining the proven technology inside the drawer, Nova Pro Scala with its straight inside surface and minimum construction width maximises the use of space on offer like never before. Gain a competitive advantage with award-winning OVVO® system As OVVO® celebrates being awarded a Best of the Best Award at Interzum 2017, we take a look at how this truly innovative connection system makes assembling cabinets easy beyond belief, and brings significant competitive advantage to manufacturers already incorporating it into their product ranges… OVVO®, the world’s first totally invisible connection system that doesn’t require the use of tools, screws or glue, has been awarded a Best of the Best Award at Interzum 2017 for the highly innovative V-0930 which was launched in Europe in March this year. The Interzum 2017 awards, hosted by Koelnmesse in collaboration with Red Dot, emphasise the significance of design as a valueadded factor, and is a reliable label by which winners can be set apart from their competitors. Five respected and independent international experts from design and architecture assessed products’ design quality against five criteria: degree of innovation, functionality, material quality, design and sustainability. The quality of a product is borne out in its everyday use: a well-thought-through design and smart details play an equally important role for the aesthetics of the product as well as its functionality. Only products that stand out through their quality and clarity are awarded the
This TV unit requires no tools or glues and can be completely assembled, from flat-pack, in less than two minutes
Interzum award: intelligent material and design. The original OVVO® 1240 connector won this award in 2015 – however, only outstanding design achievements that set new standards for form and function in their industry receive the distinction, Best of the Best, from the jury – only innovations that feature ground-breaking design, as the V-0930 does, receive this top prize. The efficiencies in construction and superior end-user experience that the OVVO® Connecting system brings are becoming increasingly widely proven. One example is how OVVO® simplifies the construction techniques of standard cabinet and furniture construction. Using OVVO®, manufacturers can offer customers and end-users a much simpler, easier cabinet assembly experience by implementing simple panel construction methods that make easy-to-assemble pieces of flat-pack furniture. One such example is
the TV unit pictured, which requires no tools or glues and can be completely assembled, from flat-pack, in less than two minutes. Visit ovvotech.com/videos for further information on how manufacturers can incorporate OVVO construction methods into their processes to gain competitive advantage in their cabinet assembly. OVVO® will be exhibiting in hall 5.1, at stand D-089 at Interzum 2017. Limited admission vouchers, worth €25, are available at ovvotech. com/interzum2017, and the OVVO® team would be delighted to meet prospective customers to discuss how they can integrate the Best of the Best award-winning invisible connection system into their products and processes. ovvotech.com sales@ovvotech.com 00353 429 370070

Sugatsune has long been heavily engaged with the furniture industry. Its philosophy is to have a portfolio of essential commodities peppered with innovative products that redefine the way we approach cabinet hardware.
Distinct design appeal Recent innovations from Sugatsune include the J95 concealed hinge. In the catalogue, it looks like any other but a quick glance reveals it is bigger and much stronger. Despite looking and working in the same way as a normal concealed hinge, three will handle a hefty 40kg door measuring up to 900mm wide with two taking 25kgs at 800mm. This makes it ideal for the larger doors that are now fashionable such as pantry doors fitted with shelves on the inside. Larger doors have a distinct design appeal but do set manufacturing challenges, not just hinge durability but the stability of the door itself. To keep the weight of the door manageable, manufacturers use substrates that can have a tendency to warp. One fix for this is the use of straightener bars such as the OMM TN401 pictured. By stressing the door with a tensioned steel rod, the straightness of the door is assured, rather like the reinforcement bars in prestressed concrete, only a lot lighter. Sugatsune supplies a family of straightener bars, which can be engineered into the door or surface mounted in smart aluminium housings. One of the strengths of Sugatsune is that, as a company, it bridges multiple industrial sectors allowing a good measure of cross fertilisation. The HES3D architectural hinge with full threeaxis adjustment and a seven-link articulation has always given architects goosebumps with its smooth engineering. They asked if they could use it for interior doors and cabinets and Sugatsune said “wait a minute and came back with a range of miniature hinges. The HES3D70 and HES3D90 are exactly like larger architectural hinges in functionality, yet they can be used on doors as slim as 18mm or 22mm respectively. They are a delight to behold and bring a note of distinction wherever they are used. sugatsune.co.uk sales@sugatsune.co.uk 0118 927 2955

Open software architecture means that no ongoing licence fees are needed which might restrict future choice and company development. The perfect processing centre for any business that needs flexibility combined with economy; the Multirex is unique in its price category. CNC processing means that traditional methods requiring significant skill and individual tolerances can be created today with ease. Just a few clicks of a mouse are needed to start the process and, with the utmost precision, bespoke work – such as mortised door frames or dovetail joints – is created with production efficiency. Its unique capabilities enable customers to develop products for the market, rather than having to work to the limitations of a machine. Weinig’s solid wood processing solutions bring economy and craftsmanship back to CNC manufacturing, be it for batch size 1 or mass production. Four-sided planing has never been so easy In day-to-day work, companies need machinery that is both robust and simple to operate. The Cube Plus delivers precisely this for easy planing up before CNC production. The Cube Plus is the latest version of Weinig’s easy-to-use four-sided planing solution. With nearly 100 of the original Cubes sold in the UK, the additional advantages of the Cube Plus make this simple processing machine a must-have for every workshop and production line. Exceptionally simple setting is supported by automatic adjustments, and the MoulderPreView green and red lasers clearly show exactly how much will be planed off before the timber goes through. The Cube Plus creates straight, dimensionally-accurate, 900 right-angled workpieces in a single pass. New developments for the CubePlus include a larger 10in touchscreen, improved chip extraction, noise reduction, and The EasyLock knife change system enables the operator to change the knives without dismounting the cutterhead. weinig.co.uk

Established in 1983, Browns 2000 is a family-owned and managed business with a manufacturing facility of over 300,000ft2 in Northumberland. To keep ahead of demand, Browns 2000 turned to Homag for a significant investment . . .
Browns 2000 selects Homag for new 60m laser edgebanding line
The cut panels are placed onto the start of the 60m laser edgebanding line
Browns 2000’s state-of-the-art factory is equipped with the latest machinery to provide high-quality doors and components to the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom trades. “We currently manufacture over 25,000 made-to-measure doors and glass splashbacks every week,” explains Graeme Brown, son of the founder. He continues: “The popularity of our Glacier range has been increasing since its launch and the number of colours and finishes on offer continues to expand year on year. “As with any successful business, our aim is to stay one step ahead of the demand from our customers. Our philosophy of investing in the best machinery on the market has put us in good stead with our customers who appreciate that we put our money where our mouth is and buy the best equipment available. This gives them confidence and peace of mind that we will always deliver a quality product on time and at a competitive price.” Investing in a new laser edgebanding line “To keep ahead of demand, we made the decision to invest in an advanced laser edgebanding line. We had been using Italian laser edgebanders for some time, but it was a manual process which
F&JP_283pre.indd 80
was time-consuming and expensive. We wanted to automate the process, speed it up and yet at the same time improve the quality of the finished products. “When faced with such a significant investment there is a temptation to fall back on what you are familiar with. At Browns 2000, however, we take a different stance. We always approach such capital expenditure decisions with a completely open mind, the aim being to find the right long-term solution for the business – we refuse to take the easy or perceived ‘safe’ route. “Consequently, we evaluated all the options on the market to see which would best suit our needs. The quality of the machinery out there is very high and most solutions would probably do an OK job. We, however, wanted more – it was vital that this investment would deliver from the word go in every sense of the word. “The equipment had to be reliable, leadingedge technology that would future-proof our manufacturing to keep us competitive in the years ahead. It had to perform to the exacting quality standard our customers demand. It also had to be able to run at high speeds so we can maintain our record of meeting demanding lead times. “Also, the relationship with the supplier
had to be one of trust and openness. We expect fast responses if issues arise and with technologically-advanced machinery they always will. From the outset, we found Homag to be truly professional. Simon Brooks went out of his way to make sure we were happy with the specification of the laser line. He is extremely knowledgeable and willing to help, so it really is a pleasure doing business with him.” A smooth and well-orchestrated installation “The installation procedure was very thorough and everything went smoothly. Our production manager, Richard Jenkins, went over to Germany to see the line when it was built and make sure it was going to do exactly what we wanted it to. Homag builds and tests its lines completely at its factory prior to delivery, which enabled us to be absolutely certain that the machinery did everything we required before it arrived. “He was extremely satisfied with what he saw and so the installation was planned for December 2016 when we closed for the Christmas period. Once the machinery arrived, the engineers from Germany just got on with the job and we were fully operational by the end of February this year.

“They gave our operators three days training on site, which went very well. Although it was a new software system for them and, hence, a steep learning curve, they found it very intuitive and were able to get to grips with it quickly. “The edgebanders have been 100% reliable and are easy to use, so it has enabled us to improve the finish of our doors and yet increase the volumes we are producing. This is key for our business and takes the pressure off us. Quality is vitally important, service is important too, but lead times are critical these days and this laser line just eats through work and makes our lives a lot easier.” A fast, reliable, automated laser edgebanding line “Previously, we had seven laser edgebanders in total and the work was put through those machines. But there were a lot more manual operations, it took longer and we knew we had to improve the quality to remain competitive. “The new laser line consists of four Homag KAL 370 profiLine laserTec edgebanders with a feeding table at the front of the line and a rotary transfer unit in the middle. The transfer unit rotates the panels in the middle of the line so all required sides can be edged

This is key for our business and takes the pressure off us.” Each door or drawer component that requires edging on all four sides, passes first through the edgebander situated on the left and then is immediately cross-transferred to the edge-bander on the right where the opposite edge is applied. “As each door exits the second edgebander, it goes onto a rotary transfer unit which turns it 90° ready for the next edge bander which is again on the left. After that, it automatically goes through the last edgebander on the right, so at the end of the line some 60m from where it started, each component has had edging applied automatically to all four sides. The beauty of this line is that every single panel can be of a different size and the line can handle them all without the need for stoppage or adjustments. “With the new line we can produce 10 bespoke doors a minute, which is significantly faster than we could achieve before. The high-gloss and super-matt finishes on our Glacier range of doors demand a premium quality finish and the new line is exceeding expectations on this front. “We could have an order from a customer which has 30 different colours and 30 different sizes on it, so we have to be able to produce these items quickly and with a high quality finish; the Homag laser line allows us to achieve this without slowing down production. The new laser line is so fast compared to our previous edge banders, it has released an incredible amount of production capacity which has allowed us to offer our customers an even better service.
“It was a big decision to step away from an existing supplier, but going with Homag has proved to be the right decision. The quality, reliability and speed are impressive; it’s been a tremendous investment for the business and we are looking forward to it paying for itself sooner rather than later,” concludes Graeme Brown. Homag KAL 370 profiLine laserTec edge bander The KAL 370 profiLine laserTec edgebander is equipped for a wide range of edgebanding applications and is ready for networked production. It offers high performance in a compact space and is suitable for processing of all kinds of edge materials including solid wood, coil and strip material, melamine, PVC, ABS, aluminium, acrylic and veneer edges. It delivers optimum ‘zero joint’ edge quality with the edges and panels joined using an aligned laser beam whose oscillating action melts a wafer-thin function layer of the edging material. The Homag KAL 370 is maintenance-friendly and offers a greater economy due to minimised extraction output, low energy requirement and the best possible cost-to-performance ratio. With a wide choice of equipment, the KAL 370 provides a high degree of flexibility and can be tailored to meet specific manufacturing requirements. 01332 856500 homag.com

“Two forward-thinking UK kitchen manufacturers have already placed orders for the Anderson Linear GS 710, both realising the advantages this new technology will bring to their respective companies.” Traditional CNC routers have relied on ball screw and rack and pinion systems, limiting the axis movement and speed, and with the obvious maintenance requirements with metal-to-metal contact. The GS 710 now uses the very latest linear drive system which, in essence, floats on a cushion of air, eliminating wear and with obvious maintenance saving. Traditional CNC routing speeds are usually between 8-24m per minute, but during the Atlanta exhibition, the GS 710 reached an impressive 90m per minute under trial conditions! Back home in the Anderson factory, perfect panels have been produced at the speed of 60m per minute. Very simply, with a linear drive and the ability to produce instant forward momentum, opposed to standard motor drives, which have to ramp up and ramp down, Anderson says it has produced a machine to triple the routing speeds of its competitors. With both large and small manufacturers moving towards nesting-based production, the Anderson GS 710 nesting line, which is equipped with auto-loading, auto-labelling and automatic expulsion of the finished nest, envisages an even greater shift in this direction. RW has announced that two forward-thinking
F&JP_283pre.indd 85
UK kitchen manufacturers have already placed orders for the Anderson Linear GS 710, both realising the advantages this new technology will bring to their respective companies. Unitech, based in Banbury, Oxfordshire, was a very early convert to nested manufacturing and its MD, Kevin Crouch was very aware of Anderson’s reliability and performance. Unitech’s first Anderson Stratos Pro line was installed in 2010, and Kevin was faced with purchasing a second nesting line to meet greater requirements due to Unitech’s success and increased business volume. Accepting that a second machine requires additional factory space and additional operators, the choice of an Anderson GS 710 was very easy due to the double routing speeds. Kevin is convinced that this purchase will give him the increased volume Unitech’s success requires. Getley Kitchens, based in Stafford, has seen amazing growth over the last five years, and with sales forecast for 2017/18 increasing even further, Mark Getley was forced with the possibility of having to purchase a larger manufacturing space. He too was also an early convert to nesting, having purchased an Anderson Stratos Pro Line in 2009 and a second
identical line in 2013 – achieving superb levels of production in excess of 1200 cabinets per week from these two lines. With Getley’s order intake increasing week by week, Mark was very aware that to increase volume by purchasing another traditional router would not only require more space and operators, but also new extraction and additional auxiliary services. When introduced to the new Anderson GS 710 and the increased output potential, Mark quickly calculated that the purchase of two new machines to replace his traditional routers would facilitate a 40% growth within his current factory, without any additional costs. Both Unitech and Getley are looking forward to the new installations schedule for April/May this year and are excited by this new technology, and of course, a significant increase in manufacturing output. Companies looking to invest in new CNC machinery, would be strongly advised to contact RW Machines to fully evaluate the company’s high performance options. 01869 244943 dgtr@rwmachines.co.uk sales@rwmachines.co.uk rwmachines.co.uk

With clients and designers continually seeking fresh and innovative looks, Hesse Lignal has risen to the challenge with the development of its range of glass lacquers.
Hesse’s impressive finishes unlock creative glass coating opportunities
This trend runs throughout the entire range of living spaces, including bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and children’s furniture. Polyurethane glass lacquers are easy and safe to work with and, after sufficient hardening time, can be secured using natural adhesives and adhesive tapes. The benefits of glass coating stand out in a number of respects, the most important of which being cost effectiveness. The necessity to outsource low volume production such as glass coating can involve specialoty films and high expense.
Not any more. With Hesse manufacturers can produce an unparalleled range of decorative and functional surfaces at a fraction of the cost in-house. Furthermore, being light fast and with exceptional chemical and mechanical resistance, all Hesse glass lacquers are designed to withstand the most demanding of conditions. This means Hesse can offer surface solutions for interior areas such as kitchen splashbacks and critical areas such as shower screens. The product appeals to designers because it offers vibrant looks for glass partition walls and reverse coated table tops and furniture parts. Further innovative and individual options are also possible by using stencils and pictograms. For additional flexibility the Hesse EL additive can be used in conjunction with compatible PU

products to produce customers’ very own glass coatings. This is an excellent option for those times when a new batch of material is not warranted by the size of the job. Two component polyurethane clear and coloured lacquers are available in any gloss level and almost all colour tones. Hesse glass lacquers are also suitable for the direct coating of metal and plastic. Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. Both Hesse and Redwood strive to provide high-quality solutions. Over the last 60 years, the Bütfering brand has established itself at the pinnacle of high performance wide-belt sanding machines and innovative surface finishing solutions.
Homag provides the finishing touch for all levels of the industry Recently rebranded, the newly-named Homag wide-belt sander portfolio includes a wide range of models starting at entry level, specifically designed for small workshops, through to high-throughput machines for advanced manufacturing plants. The impressive portfolio includes models for calibrating and finish sanding as well as lacquer sanding. All the models boast German technology and engineering – world renowned for its quality, reliability and innovation. The compact entry level SWT 100 series The Homag sanding range starts with the compact SWT 100 series. These entry-level, wide-belt sanders are equipped with up to two sanding heads. This ensures perfect sanding results from calibrating and fine sanding on solid wood and veneered panels to easy lacquer sanding. The SWT 100 series offers a working width of up to 1100mm with a sanding belt length of 1900mm.
The Robospray Twin – a flawless finish every time for both matt and high-gloss coatings
Moving up – the SWT 200 series The next in the range is the versatile SWT 200 series for sanding solid wood to veneer and intermediate sealer sanding. It uses either Homag’s air cushion sanding pad (acp) or electronic pressure system (eps) intelligent pressure pad systems. The acp system senses incoming workpieces and activates the rise and fall pad system to give an anti-dubbing facility at both leading and trailing edges of the part. It is ideal for use on solid wood or thicker veneers. The eps technology ensures the optimum sanding pressure on all areas of a workpiece, guaranteeing a perfect sanding result. The eps works with a segment width of 50mm (optional 25mm) and is suitable for applications such as solid wood, veneer and lacquer sanding. The individual segments ‘float’ on the part surface with a constant pressure to protect veneered or lacquered surfaces within a tolerance range of 2mm. It is also possible to add or subtract edge segments to modify edge pressure.

For those looking for high-quality sanding across different surfaces, the H head is ideal. It is also designed for lacquer sanding with very fine grits and solid wood sanding, especially frame parts. For fine sanding of wood and wood materials, Homag has developed the E head. This is also good for lacquered surfaces and improving the sanding results of pre-sanded processes. Perfect sanding is about applying the right pressure at the right time and in the right place. On the Homag SWT 300 series, the eps ensures the optimum sanding pressure on all areas of a workpiece, guaranteeing a perfect sanding result. The SWT 700 and 900 series – heavy duty production These heavier models are available in both 1350 and 1650mm working widths and can be equipped with any head type in any order to suit special applications and higher production speeds. “Exterior wood can often look jaded and old after being exposed to the external elements for a long period,” comments Steve Grimwood, Managing Director, Osmo UK. “In particular, high UV rays can bleach exterior wood, giving the timber a greyed and lifeless appearance. Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel has a deep penetrating effect that allows professionals and end users to achieve remarkable results that will bring exterior wood back to its original condition in just 30 minutes.” Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel is ready to apply straight from the tin. After generously applying the product along the wood grain, the solution requires just 20 minutes to gently work into the wood’s surface before being scrubbed with a hard bristle brush. Once rinsed with plenty of water, it is recommended to allow 48 hours drying time before applying a finish, such as Osmo Polyx-Oil, Decking-Oils and Country Colour. On average, one litre of Osmo Wood Reviver Power Gel will cover a 10m2 area. 01296 481220 osmouk.com

Renolit Armouren, the innovative and robust PVC film developed to provide superior impact protection to furniture components and interior fittings, is now enhanced with an antimicrobial surface finish.
Antimicrobial impact-resistant film from Renolit
Anti-bacterial additives within the lacquer, work to inhibit or prevent the growth of bacteria on the substrate which delivers a reduction in antimicrobial activity. In independent tests, Renolit Armouren was proven over a 24-hour period to reduce two of the most common bacteria, e-coli and MRSA, found in hospitals by more than 99.8%. The product is available as a 12-item stock range that includes eight realistic woodgrain prints and four contemporary solid colours. It is targeted to meet the requirement for a decorative surface film suited to furniture and interior applications in areas of high traffic and where antimicrobial properties are beneficial. Typical areas of use include for example, healthcare, shopfitting, hotel and hospitality, or public buildings. In addition to its excellent physical characteristics, Renolit Armouren benefits from being offered in small minimum order quantities and with short lead times, which are essential for markets that rely on fast turnaround times for contracts. Product characteristics Renolit Armouren is a 0.7mm-thick material, ideal for either flat lamination or thermoforming. It can be processed on a wide range of substrate materials, such as MDF and chip board. The product can be manufactured using typical conditions on all standard industry equipment. This means that anyone with experience working with products from the company’s 2D offer or 3D global stock ranges Renolit Covaren or Renolit Alkoren can confidently use Renolit Armouren. Product group manager Grant Swan, based at

Renolit’s UK manufacturing facility in the north east of England, states: “We have been asked by a number of companies for a durable impact film that is easy to process, fit for purpose, and readily available in a wide range of designs.” Renolit Armouren has been independently impact-performance tested to BSI and NEMA accreditation standards. In the UK, the product was tested according to BS3962-6: Ball impact resistance and in USA according to NEMA LD3 –2005, Ball impact & Dart impact resistance. Product range Renolit Armouren is launched as a stock range of 12 items supplied in 100 linear metre rolls. It contains a variety of eight popular woodgrain designs, including ash, walnut, oak and maple, plus four modern textured solid colours. Renolit Armouren products are completed
with either a classic Finegrain emboss or matt Suedette texture to create beautiful surface finishes. An additional selection of the current woodgrain or solid colour 3D stock range items are also available on a make-to-order basis. Renolit Armouren offers a high level of flexibility to designers and contractors as all designs and solid colours are also available in Renolit’s standard 3D and 2D ranges. This allows different products to be matched, according to the application, within the same environment. Coordinating melamine-faced chipboards are also available from leading industry manufacturers. UV curing for smaller joinery businesses
Pendle Doors recently installed a Bürkle rollercoating UV curing system and haven’t looked back
As technology allows the manufacturing world to achieve ever-faster production times, it’s often the larger joinery businesses that are the main beneficiaries of these improvements. Cost and availability of space are frequently cited as reasons for smaller joinery businesses missing out. High tech lacquer Recent advancements in UV curing equipment and lacquers have changed all that. Not only has the available equipment reduced in size and price but the lacquer itself has changed. Teknos’ UVILUX Sealer 1453 combines a sealer and lacquer in one. This gives the UV process two advantages; no cleaning down equipment between primer and topcoat, just coat and go again; and with UV curing the product is dry in under a minute. There are other advantages to the UV curing system. With traditional drying systems, there is some evaporation whether using solvent or water-based coatings but the immediate solidity of UV-cured joinery puts a stop to this. And since the coating is 100% dry when it emerges, the joinery can be processed immediately. Competitive advantage Lancashire-based joiner Pendle Doors recently installed a Bürkle roller-coating UV-curing system and haven’t looked back. Managing director Steve Anderson explains: “We used to have racks of our doors taking up valuable production space while they dried.
F&JP_283pre.indd 94

SURFACE FINISHING
www.furnitureproduction.net
Now our products go through the Bürkle machine, get flipped over and then immediately fed back to coat the other side. Combined with the Teknos UVILUX Sealer, this system has had a massive impact on production times and expenditure.” Cost savings from roller coating Products have no risk of dust contamination since the unit is sealed and the joinery is not wet when it comes out. Liam Whelan from MPS Machines – which represents Bürkle in the UK – adds: “The amount of lacquer used in the Bürkle roller coating system is, on average, one tenth of the amount used by the spraying method.
Despite UV lacquer being typically twice the price of PU-based lacquer, this means the cost of UV is still one fifth that of PU.” Of course, less spraying makes for a better work environment for employees as well. Good things in small packages Like so many technological developments, one of the main changes to UV curing systems has been the reduction in unit size. The floor space required is deceptively modest and although the initial outlay may seem out of reach for some smaller joinery businesses, the payback is said to be fast – and prices are coming down. Lacquer technology has been keeping up
95
with this fast-paced change. Teknos now offers an antibacterial additive for its combi lacquer, expanding the suitability of UV-cured joinery to specialist locations like hospitals and doctors’ surgeries. With paint technology and UV curing machinery developing rapidly, the opportunities for smaller manufacturers are wide open. Businesses excited by 3D printing potential, but relaxed about risks New research from law firm DMH Stallard has found that while many companies are excited by the use and potential of 3D printing, they currently don’t see it posing much of a threat to their intellectual property (IP). This is despite the fact that 3D printing can make counterfeiting goods easier. The qualitative research spoke to companies working across such areas as using 3D printing to produce prototypes as well as finished parts, and those developing software relevant to 3D printing, design protection and data logistics. Robert Ganpatsingh, partner at DMH Stallard and one of the researchers, says: “Of the companies we spoke to, who all operated in a business-to-business environment, the majority believed that their IP would be safe if sensible precautions were taken to protect it. Although they did acknowledge that there was more danger to them at the bespoke end of the scale, where very small numbers of highly customised products are made. “While this attitude may not cost them today, as 3D printing improves, so does the ability of counterfeiters to rip off IP which is hugely valuable to organisations. Companies need to take steps now to ensure that they are protected in the future as the technology develops.”
“One of the most attractive things about 3D printing is that manufacturing businesses need only move data to the printer to enable local manufacturing”
The report from DMH Stallard
F&JP_283pre.indd 102
Robert Ganpatsingh, partner at DMH Stallard
The research found that the major motivations for companies to use 3D printing fell into four main categories: – Supply chain disruption. It allows companies to take back control of their supply chain by producing their own parts; – Mass customisation. Being able to customise products without the need for expensive and dedicated tools; – Reverse engineering. Not only does 3D printing allow the design and creation of customised products, it allows models to be created from products; – Making the impossible possible. It allows the creation of products that other manufacturing
methods would not have allowed. Robert continues: “One of the most attractive things about 3D printing is that manufacturing businesses need only move data to the printer to enable local manufacturing. But this means whoever has that data has the keys to the castle. The UK develops innovative products that are the result of huge investments in research and development. Organisations need to protect their investment by making it as difficult as possible for counterfeiters to copy their products.” Robert has the following tips for businesses wanting to get the most from 3D printing while protecting their IP.
Ten top tips for making the most of 3D printing Evaluate the strategic benefits that 3D printing could bring to your business through increased agility and reduced product development time scales. Secure your data both internally and externally. If you need to share designs with third parties, use geometrical models viewed through web-based viewers. This means that you can avoid sending sensitive design files which can be rapidly disseminated and easily exploited through 3D printing. For added security, invest in your own 3D printing capability to print prototype designs in-house. Technology is constantly changing and advancements may overtake your current development and protection strategies. Keep up to date with changes in the industry to avoid this happening to you. Set up as many barriers as possible to prevent the copying of your products. Remember to follow tried and trusted strategies to protect IP, such as design rights, patents and trade marks. Place greater emphasis on determining which
parts of your products may need their own individual protection. If you are allowing customers or suppliers to 3D print finished parts of your own design, consider posting them on a site where distribution is controlled. You must have strict contractual terms agreed between you and the 3D printing bureau to give you added protection in case of any lost data, IP infringement or other legal liability. If making production parts, ensure that you have appropriate control of processes within your organisation and with any sub-contractors you may use. When making production parts, look to protect the process, not just the shape of the parts. Get advice to ensure the most important aspects of your products are properly protected. Don’t forget to look at our earlier report on protecting intellectual property. As well as protecting the process used to create products, think about protecting the materials being used and how important they are. This may be through IP or an exclusive contractual agreement with the supplier.

Weighing just 1.8kg the Makita DFS250 is available either as a body only machine or with two 5.0 Ah Lithium-Ion batteries in a Makpac case. The new Makita DFS251 machine is the TEK screw version, with offers all the attributes of the DFS250, and in addition will power a 6mm hex screw socket. TEK screws are the core fixings for cladding and panel walling systems. The new Makita DPT353 LXT pin nailer takes 23 Gauge (0.6mm) size nails and can deliver 15, 18, 25, 30 and 35mm length nails. The magazine will hold 100 nails of each

of these sizes. The finished driving depth, that is, how deep below the surface the nail head finishes, or level if required, is adjusted by the simple rotary adjuster adjacent to the nose assembly. The anti dry-fire mechanism stops the nailer operating if the machine has run out of nails. The nose tip has been redesigned for better visibility enabling the operator to get a quick and easy view of the desired firing point on the work piece. The DPT353 has a low reaction
force mechanism which enables easier nailing of long pins. Makita recommends that a trigger safety lock should always be applied when the machine is not in use. With LED job light; soft grip handle; belt clip and battery fuel gauge the new Makita DPT353 LXT pin nailer will appeal to all installers and construction trades. It is available with two 5.0 Ah Lithium-Ion batteries in a Makpac case, or as a body only machine, and replaces the DPT351 model. makitauk.com
