Smart-manufacturing is becoming a reality

ADVERTISING MANAGER Paul Field Tel: 01424 776102 paul.field@gearingmediagroup.com Twitter: @FurnitureProdAd

One of the key themes from the ever-impressive Ligna event in Germany last month was the harnessing of the digital aspects of manufacturing to help manufacturers gain an up-to-the-second overview of operating efficiency, remotely via Cloud-based, realtime analytics. Platforms are being launched, such as Homag’s tapio solution, which enable manufacturers (and suppliers) to take a step into a digital future, to create highly-efficient workflows with real-time monitoring. We have all become more used to a digital world with our smart phones, social media, fridges that know when we’ve run out of milk, self-driving cars, wearable tech and the like – so it is no surprise really that the furniture manufacturing sector is, eventually, finding ways to harness data to deliver greater production efficiency. This is a topic we intend to address in more detail in forthcoming issues... so watch this space. In this issue, Hannah Frackiewicz profiles British bespoke manufacturer Valdivian Furniture whose meticulous attention to detail, combined with an eco-friendly outlook, has stood the exotically-named company in very good stead for the last three decades.

Along with our ever-popular case studies where manufacturers tell us what tech they have invested in and how it has helped their business, plus a multitude of company updates, this issue features articles on sanding and finishing, adhesives, training, service and maintenance. And don’t forget there’s more content available online at www.furnitureproduction.net and on our Twitter accounts. As a small number of online newsletter readers whose computers use outdated Outlook 2013 software will not get the full experience and some images will not be in proportion – we recommend that you update your Outlook to fully appreciate the latest design. I hope you enjoy the issue.

AkzoNobel introduces new design app Architects, designers and specifiers can now research and create a full coatings specification from a mobile device following the launch of a new app from AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business. The design app allows users to develop a bespoke technical specification in a matter of minutes by offering a choice of filters at each stage of the decision process. These filters range from type of construction material, geographical location of project and durability requirements, to liquid and powder coating options, colour choices and finished look. The new app is the latest addition to the rapidly growing selection of innovative digital solutions provided by AkzoNobel across its businesses. “We realise it is time consuming going through colour cards, and then checking

that products meet the necessary requirements of durability, toughness and weathering,” explains Russell Deane, AkzoNobel’s global specification manager for the powder coatings architectural segment. “Our new app short-circuits the whole process, but without any compromises to the level of detail that a specification can demand. And it can be done from anywhere in the world, whether you’re on the road, out in the field, or in your client’s office.” As well as showing the company’s complete range of colours and finishes – including metallic – the app also allows users to colour match. Simply upload a photograph of the chosen colour (the blue of a swimming pool for example) and the app instantly searches for the closest matches.

Hotshots score another big hit at Northern Big Shots Hotshots from as far afield as Belgium gathered in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales for the annual Northern Big Shots event in aid of The Furniture Makers. Organised by furnishing industry stalwart Victor Giannandrea, the 2017 shoot-out was held at the Coniston Hotel and country estate

near Skipton. It was the fourth clay-shooting event to be held in the North and featured a novel new challenge – a flying ‘gnat’. 15 teams took part, competing for a total of 12 different trophies. Victor says: “It really was an amazing day, which saw industry leaders from around the country come together for a great day of shooting and networking. “I was also thrilled that my original shooting partner, Ian Peel, an Olympic silver medallist at clay shooting was able to join us for the day as my personal guest to present the prizes. “Our raffles alone raised more than £2000 and thanks to a number of very generous sponsors we were able to boost the amount raised to even more than last year, ensuring the day was both enjoyable and very worthwhile.” The 2018 Northern Big Shots will be held on 26th April. furnituremakers.org.uk

Blum UK to support Milton Keynes fundraising event The Dragon Boat race in Milton Keynes is one of the main fundraising events of the calendar, and this year will be raising money for Age UK Milton Keynes. One of Blum’s main interests is to help kitchen companies make ‘future-proof’ products, so this seemed a perfect fit for the fundraising event this year. With a crew of 16, covering every area of the business, it’s also a great way to get the whole company involved in a fun event. Blum is looking to raise £1000 by the end of June. Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest-growing water activity in Britain today – as well as the most fun! Up to 16 people paddle each 40’ boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. Apart from uniting the 16 members of the race team, Blum UK hopes it will help local participants and visitors understand what Blum can offer locally. “Blum in Austria is very well known for supporting local causes, and we aim to do the same here in Milton Keynes,” explains Emma Fletcher, who has organised and cajoled the various members of the team. “We entered the festival primarily for a bit of fun, and to raise money for a very deserving cause, but have steadily become more competitive – we hope the rest of the company will be out, cheering for us on the day – Go the BUK-aneers!” The Dragon Boat Race is on Sunday 25th June at the Willen Lake in Milton Keynes. 01908 285700 blum.com

As a successful and influential business, Kite Packaging believes it has the responsibility to support the development of the next generation and understand the importance of technology and to the extended capabilities technology can lead to. The equipment donated by Kite Packaging will greatly support Adventure Plus in allowing it to build up its ‘back office’ capability and enable its organisation’s primary focus of providing adventure holidays and training for young people throughout the UK. The company says it was an honour for Kite to donate its end of life IT equipment to such a great charity. kitepackaging.co.uk

Gerber appoints new CEO, Mohit Uberoi Gerber Technology, a world leader in integrated software and automation solutions for the apparel and industrial markets, has announced, as part of a succession plan, the appointment of a new CEO, Mohit Uberoi, to succeed retiring Mike Elia. BWF sets blueprint for safe common timber stairs The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Stair Scheme has launched a new guide to assist stair designers, manufacturers and building professionals involved in the design and specification of common timber stairs for the UK market. The new Design Guide 2: Common Timber Stairs was launched at the Stair Flair with Due Care CPD seminar in London last month. It is estimated that there is a fall on stairs every 90 seconds in the UK, and a further estimated 250,000 non-fatal accidents which are serious enough to merit a trip to A&E. An understanding of tiny details and dimensional limitations within the design of the stair is critical to ensuring that it is safe for all users and compliant to relevant regulations. The launch event at the Building Centre, London, featured BWF Stair Scheme manager Hannah Mansell and structural engineer Dr Luke Whale, managing director of C4Ci, presenting on the key findings of the new guide, covering regulatory compliance and the design of safe timber stairs for communal settings such as blocks of flats or non-domestic buildings. Design Guide 2: Common Timber Stairs is available to download on the BWF Stair Scheme website at www.bwfstairscheme.org.uk/stairdesign

Joining an industryleading company, that is financially strong with innovative product roadmaps driven by customer insight, is truly a blessing,” says Mohit Uberoi. “My vision for Gerber is to continue to help customers ‘Embrace Their Digital Reality’ with products that accelerate speed to market.”

Liam O’Donnell, expert furniture craftsman and director of Valdivian Furniture, talks to Furniture & Joinery Production about the team’s passion for developing bespoke British-made pieces whilst offering a truly unique service.

Best of British After years trading in the hospitality furniture industry as a family business, Liam and his team realised that they weren’t truly marketing the company for what it really was – a British-made furniture specialist that maintained an unrivalled commitment to the environment. A brand overhaul was considered vital in order to convey the true ethos behind the company, as Liam explains: “We decided to rebrand with our core values as part of our message and Valdivian Furniture was born – a name derived from an eco region on the west coast of South America in Chile and Argentina.” Liam adds: “The British branding of Valdivian Furniture gives the company a competitive edge, with all designs being developed and manufactured in our UK factory. With Britishmade furniture becoming less common, this makes Valdivian exclusive and has proven the popularity of both in-house and bespoke, handcrafted furniture pieces.” The company has a USP like no other – the ability to undertake large-scale projects

F&JP_284pre.indd 10

with incomparable quality finishes while still maintaining a personable service from a familyrun company. “Each client gets a truly unique experience,” comments Liam, “with visibility and communication through all stages of design, manufacturing and fitting.” This commitment to customer relationships has been significantly bolstered thanks to a recent move of premises, which enabled Valdivian to employ more staff with expertise in both upholstery and joinery. The Valdivian team has an unrivalled passion for furniture and a unique eye for craftsmanship and design, which showcases the creative talents behind the business. Moreover, the company’s close-knit character enables team members to work together in a highly productive manner, thus driving the business forward. Liam continues: “We have and always will see our workforce as family. Without their constant hard work and support, our dream of being an eco-friendly British manufacturer wouldn’t be possible.”

As customers strive to become more sustainable and implement their corporate social responsibility schemes, Valdivian has found its environmental initiatives fully meet these needs, as Liam explains further: “All of our woods are carefully sourced from sustainable forests and will always be FSC or PEFC certified.” The company’s product portfolio is extensive; one of the many reasons hotels and restaurants continue to source their furniture from Valdivian. However, the company’s greatest asset is its ability to manufacture bespoke pieces to the exact design requirements of the client, demonstrating its flexibility as a company. “Alongside our bespoke service, we are finding The Savannah, Albertine and Malayan ranges to be extremely popular.” At busy times, the company utilises a strategic in-house production system, which all staff are responsible for keeping updated in their various departments. Liam comments: “This way, everyone knows the stage they are at and, in turn, we can keep our finger on the production at all times.”

To maintain its high-quality product offering, Valdivian keeps up to date with the latest innovations in woodworking machinery and spraying systems available in the UK. Recent investments include planer saws and sanders manufactured by Felder, and a bespoke-designed spray booth prodocued by L and B Norwich. Liam comments: “We, as a company, believe in making furniture by hand. Our traditional machinery saws and planers, plus full extraction systems, increase efficiency and ensure customer lead times are met and completed to a high standard.” CAD software has also become integral to the company’s operations. “It would be difficult to run efficiently without it,” explains Liam. “The software allows us the freedom to design

“We have and always will see our workforce as family. Without their constant hard work and support, our dream of being an eco-friendly British manufacturer wouldn’t be possible.” furniture and create full-scheme layouts, which has been invaluable for the business and opened new doors for Valdivian.” On the factory floor, reduction of waste and recycling are important issues. Liam explains: “We run an in-house recycling programme, which involves us working with local schools to recycle our off-cuts of material and foam. The remaining waste is then split up and recycled accordingly.”

F&JP_284pre.indd 11

Valdivian’s commitment to the environment alongside its unique service has earned the company a suite of prestigious clients in the hospitality sector. Liam recalls the business’ most notable commission to date: “Antipodea restaurant is a true mark of our bespoke design skills and demonstrates Valdivian’s unique attention to detail and creative aptitude. “This is our greatest achievement in furniture design and manufacturing and there isn’t a single piece of furniture in the setting that we didn’t have a hand in creating in-house. We worked closely with the project designers to develop the bespoke pieces that complement the space, with the mixture of natural woods and materials being specifically chosen to capture a natural aesthetic.” Liam continues: “The exposed brick walls and solid oak tabletops also bring together the elements for a truly stunning finish, which reflects the grounded vibes of the Australian outdoors. For us, the Antipodea project really tested our ability as a manufacturer, but in a positive way.” With the company’s recent investment in new spacious premises and increased manpower, growth is certainly on the horizon for Valdivian. Liam concludes: “We are currently working on new furniture ranges that we hope to launch by the end of the year, so there are lots of exciting new pieces and designs in store. “With restaurant openings on the rise and hotels investing 57% more on refurbishments, the future is looking promising for those manufacturing and supplying furniture to the sector. Owners are becoming more aware of the importance of surroundings in completing a full service offering and with new trends setting in, we hope to use this to our advantage over the next 12 months. “We have in-depth knowledge of the industry and can offer our insight and designs to those looking to update, open or re-design.” valdivianfurniture.co.uk

INTERZUM REVIEW

www.furnitureproduction.net

With Interzum over for two years, visitors and exhibitors alike are taking the time to reflect on the experiences encountered during the always-impressive materials and fittings event.

Shaping tomorrow’s spaces According to the organiser, Koelnmesse, this year’s edition of interzum proved fruitful, witnessing record results in attendance. A total of approximately 69,000 visitors from 152 countries attended the world’s largest trade fair for furniture production and interior construction between 16-19th May. “It was the best interzum ever yet,” said Katharina C. Hamma, chief operating officer of Koelnmesse GmbH, who is delighted with the results. “With this year’s interzum, we offered the industry a unique event. interzum has reached a new level with the rises in visitor figures, the growth in exhibitor numbers and the increase in floor space combined with measures to enhance the event’s quality.” Interzum this year not only attracted more international exhibitors, it extended its reach to international visitors too. Overall, more than 51,000 visitors came from outside Germany. Presence from the UK was also considerably up from the previous edition. Interzum addressed some very exciting themes and ideas for trade visitors. It demonstrated that outstanding innovations in furniture production and interior construction are constantly being developed. New materials, technologies and design approaches were just some of the key

areas that the trade fair focused on. The products on display ranged from fittings, surfaces and decors to textiles, glass and lighting all the way through to innovative materials. The wide-ranging special events at the trade fair examined global trends such as sustainability, digitalisation and mobility. The special Mobile Spaces event area explored how a new understanding of mobility will influence vehicle interiors. With events such as this, interzum underscored its focus on groundbreaking ideas and highlighted their importance to exhibitors. Further themes included urbanisation and individualism. Due to ongoing urbanisation, living spaces are becoming increasingly smaller,

and more expensive. Merging spaces using innovative space-saving concepts became a focus for many leading fittings and components specialists, Blum, Grass and Vauth-Sagel to name but a few. Meanwhile, in the lighting sector, suppliers demonstrated the importance of offering a customisable range that can enable customers to pre-programme their preferred lighting – be it relaxing or awakening – within each area of the home. Using simple remote control technology, the home can be lit up at the touch of a button. Be sure to grab your copy of Furniture & Joinery Production next month, where you’ll find a full review capturing all the highlights. interzum.com

INTERZUM REVIEW

www.furnitureproduction.net

On the impressive 600m2 Egger stand, the international audience at the recent Interzum were ‘Simply Inspired’. Under this motto, the wood-based material manufacturer presented highlights from its in-house exhibition Eggerzum 2017, alongside new products and services from the Egger Decorative Collection 2017-2019. At Interzum in Cologne, Egger offered inspiration and ideas for trend-oriented designs to a huge number of visitors. The company’s trade fair motto Simply Inspired covered all of Egger’s new introductions and included new decors and products from Eggerzum 2017 – the wood-based material manufacturer’s in-house exhibition for the furniture industry – as well as premium surfaces and the 9 Grid system from the Egger Decorative Collection. Both areas were united by the central theme of inspiration. “Our customers know us as a future-oriented provider of ideas for design and material. We lived up to this expectation with this year’s presentation at Interzum in Cologne,” says Hubert Höglauer, head of marketing and product management furniture/interior. Eggerzum 2017 For more than 20 years, Egger has been successfully organising EGGERZUM, an inhouse exhibition for its customers in the furniture industry, in various locations belonging to the corporate group. The décor and surface novelties presented – also shown at Interzum – are inspired by social trends such as mindfulness, value and balance. They are reflected in interior design in the deliberate combination of a wide range of materials and colours. The mindful handling of accents and contrasts, light and saturated uni colours, plain and striking woodgrain décors, as well as diverse material reproductions, leads to balanced, but at the same time, exciting décors. Since the introduction of PerfectSense Gloss and Matt lacquered boards, the wood-based material manufacturer has been working hard to develop this premium product further.

With its new matt concept, Egger offers integral solutions for matt surfaces. The various products can be used for furniture elements, as well as worktops.

“Our customers know us as a future-oriented provider of ideas for design and material. We lived up to this expectation with this year’s presentation at Interzum in Cologne.” In addition to the 18 decor variants of the Egger Decorative Collection, Eggerzum 2017’s exciting decor innovations for woodgrain and material reproductions in gloss and matt, were also presented in Cologne. With a new matt concept, Egger offers a complete PerfectSense Matt solution for the furniture industry. There have also been changes for edging: at Interzum, Egger presented woodgrain and material reproductions as polypropylene edging in digital printing with embossed texture. This

means that the full-range supplier provides a suitable edging for almost every surface. The Egger Decorative Collection for specification and shopfitting The wood-based material manufacturer also highlighted its new Egger Decorative Collection 2017-2019 at Interzum. Introduced successfully across the world in January, the collection is aimed at architects, distributors, and fabricators. The collection is an interconnected system with 300 décors, seven new surfaces, and an expanded product range for established décor and material combinations. Comprehensive services provide support in every project phase and make fast, reliable, and successful activities possible. Moreover, Egger has developed a system that provides orientation in this décor diversity: the innovative 9 Grid system, in which decors are ordered into compact nine grids, allows for fast, direct comparison between colour tones and also groups wood types and materials by character. Décors for projects can be defined easily and efficiently. Another key element of the collection is the nine style worlds: they incorporate defining international trends, on whose basis Egger has developed its décors. 01434 613359 elliott.fairlie@egger.com egger.com

The latest release of Alphacam, from Vero Software, continues to intuitively automate key CAD/CAM operations, improving manufacturing productivity and efficiency.

Latest Alphacam features new key automation capabilities Automation Manager includes enhancements to simplify the workflow, including Multi-drill control, new Styles functionality, and further support for additional CAD file formats. The introduction of Automation Manager Plus across all levels of Alphacam allows advanced automation to support the processing of constrained drawings and parametric sketches, and part grain direction through sheet grain direction and alignment vector options. It also includes the Cabinet Door Manufacture (CDM) module. Alphacam 2017 R2 also sees the first release of its integration with robot simulation software, meaning that output toolpaths generated within Alphacam can be passed directly to RoboDK’s Offline Programming (OLP) to simulate robot kinematics, along with a range of applications and activities such as robot milling. RoboDK then outputs the OLP to the robot controller. As part of the Vero Customer Experience Improvement Program, Alphacam integrates Microsoft Analytics to gather software usage statistics. A new reverse cut direction option has been added to rough/finish, creating toolpaths in the opposite direction to the tool direction on the geometry. Alphacam’s brand manager, Simon Mathias, says this is particularly useful when creating multiple passes around a shape which needs to go in alternate directions, such as polishing and sanding profiled edges. Sawing has been enhanced by controlling how

F&JP_284pre.indd 18

the foul avoidance is applied. It can be applied to none or all of the selected machining geometries. Alternatively, a separate selection can be made for the avoidance geometries. Foul avoidance geometries appear in a new branch of the operation tree, where geometries can be added or removed, and the selection remade. In Alphacam’s powerful nesting function, offcuts generated from nested sheets are now written to the new sheet database. Sheets may have been created from the database or just-as-drawn in the active drawing. The offcut will be created under the correct sheet, matching the material and thickness, which can be viewed as attributes on

the sheet. The new release also continues Alphacam’s theme of improving user experience, by updating many dialog boxes, including profiling, 3D machining, lathe turning cycles and stone, providing a more intuitive and consistent approach across the modules, to include new images, tooltips and help links. Support for 4K monitors has been improved with the addition of scaling options, to make the icons larger for higher 4K dpi settings – accessed from the appearance section in the ribbon bar configuration. The input CAD extensions add-in now supports all imported file types. Simon adds: “The dialog will only be displayed if the CAD file imported something that can be processed – for example, at least one instance of geometry, text or spline. Otherwise the dialog won’t be shown.” There is also a new tool which he says is useful for tidying up imported geometry from CAD formats such as DXF and DWG, where the designer may have created several overlaying entities which are used in design, but are not required for manufacturing via CNC. “This is the common line removal option which has been added to the dialog, enabling it to run automatically on CAD import. It will be particularly valuable when batch processing CAD data through Automation Manager.” In conclusion, Simon Mathias says: “The automation enhancements in Alphacam 2017 R2 assist manufacturers to improve productivity and profitability by speeding up their manufacturing processes.” verosoftware.com alphacam.com

Vero Software has issued Version 10 of its industry-leading solution for cabinet and casewoods manufacturers.

New Cabinet Vision: “Milestone for productivity and efficiency” The latest release of Cabinet Vision is designed to help woodworkers take their businesses to the next level. Product Business Manager, Marie Cassidy says Version 10 represents the next milestone in continuing on its goal of delivering the most powerful and flexible software on the market, while retaining ease of use, both in the design module, and Screen-To-Machine (S2M) which sends accurate, optimised NC code to the machine tool. “From entry level cutlist packages to fully integrated Screen-To-Machine solutions, this latest release has been developed specifically to give woodwork companies even more productivity and efficiency.” A major asset in Version 10 is the ability to export entire rooms and import them into another job. “This allows users to save time by capitalising on the work they’re already done.” Another completely new feature is the ability to set and save camera angles and viewpoints when viewing rooms in 3D mode. “These viewpoints mimic the way the eye creates depth and perspective, based on the location and height of the observer, giving a more realistic and creative look at the rooms.” There is no longer any need to type the name of an object when creating CAD leaders, saving time and effort. Cabinet Vision now gives the ability to select any object in any view to quickly create a CAD leader to identify it. These ‘smart’ CAD leaders know what the selected object is and automatically add its name in the text. An enhanced light editor is displayed in its own resizable dialog box, giving more space and flexibility when working with lighting. “This is better for users when setting and adjusting

lighting for renderings,” says Marie Cassidy. And a new ghost rendering feature means varying degrees of transparency can be set when rendering jobs, meaning both the inside components and outside features can be shown in the same view. Cabinets can now be copied and mirrored, reversing all the sectioning both inside and out. This new feature saves time, as users no longer have to manually recreate a perfect mirror image of an assembly, piece by piece. Version 10 features a complete hatching overhaul, with the use of vector hatch patterns supporting the .pat file format, allowing the use of industry standard hatch patterns when creating submittal drawings. When working on sliding or pair doors, each door can now be independently sectioned, giving more scope for design creativity. The Bid Centre’s reporting capabilities have been completely enhanced in the Solid Ultimate module, and for Solid Advanced users with the Report Editor add-on. This new feature gives more power and flexibility when creating customised bid reports. There is now the ability to layout mouldings around curved arches, making it easier to ‘dress up’ a room or object, enhancing design. The S2M Centre automatically processes part geometries and produces machine ready G-Code to send straight to the workshop CNC machinery, eliminating time and costly errors. Amongst a number of new features: • Using the Machine Set feature, users now have the ability to create a Workflow process streamlining the process for parts to flow through production, including information for labels and reports. This leads to better utilisation of both

labour and the machine tools. • Machine operations which have been generated through the S2M Centre’s machine links can now be simulated, meaning users can visually check the operations before machining. • Perimeter Nesting is an innovative S2M Center start point methodology. “It maximises the part hold on the sheet during cutting, reducing movement on the nested sheet,” says Marie Cassidy. “This decreases the amount of rework needed, and machine time.” In conclusion: “Cabinet Vision is used extensively by companies designing and manufacturing kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and furniture for schools and offices, along with bespoke case goods. Every user will find many of the updates in the latest release invaluable in improving their processes even further, whether they have manual cutlists or use CNC equipment.” cabinetvision.com

“From entry level cutlist packages to fully integrated Screen-To-Machine solutions, this latest release has been developed specifically to give woodwork companies even more productivity and efficiency.”

Working hand-in-hand with some of the world’s leading laminate suppliers, distributor Lawcris identifies the need to offer an extensive choice of panels and boards to the market. In this issue, Furniture & Joinery Production explores the company’s popular Lucent Gloss surface range from Finsa.

Lucent takes surfaces to a new dimension

High gloss surfacing continues to be a leading option for manufacturers and designers looking to create a sophisticated and dramatic finish. Spanish firm Finsa certainly broke the mould when it created its exclusive Fibraplast Lucent Gloss range surfacing. The unique breakthrough technology used in the manufacturing process has paved the way for a new dimension in high gloss material and the result is an ultra-smooth surface with a clear and highly reflective, mirror-like finish. Fibraplast Lucent is one of the most innovative products included in the portfolio of Finsa, opening up a wide variety of possibilities for furniture, shopfitting and project applications. Lucent takes surfaces to a new dimension, outpacing other glossy products available in the market. The exclusive breakthrough technology used in its manufacturing process is the reason for its great surface quality, its high gloss level and its unrivalled scratch and UV resistance. Besides, the quality of its MDF baseboard offers an excellent machinability and consistent mechanical properties. Apart from all these advantages, while other alternative high gloss products available in the market are more expensive and even require additional industrial processing, Fibraplast Lucent offers a cost-effective solution and it is ready to use.

All these attributes and the wide range of surfaces included in the Fibraplast Lucent collection make this product an excellent option for home interior decoration as well as for hospitality applications and shopfitting. For instance, at home, the kitchen would be the ideal place to show these surfaces, a current trend in the industry. Nonetheless, Lucent is also a suitable option for bedroom and living room furniture, where the mirrored surfaces bring radiance and luminosity and the matt surfaces add coziness and delicacy. In addition, there is no doubt that Lucent has a place in the hospitality sector. The trend for gloss and matt surfaces is growing in hospitality venues with increasing demand. It is one of the most effective ways for modern restaurants,

bars, clubs and hotels to offer a special atmosphere, with guests considering this kind of surface an element of style and luxury. Additionally, in the field of store decoration and shopfitting, in many occasions the sumptuousness is also the main idea that the project needs to convey. For these purposes, high gloss Lucent seems to be the best option for letting the products excel and speak for themselves, beautifully surrounded by a radiant surface. The range of designs allows for making combinations of all kinds. In fact, the colour chart includes basic décors such as black and white and an array of neutral tones such as grey or cream. The range also displays a great variety of woodgrains, including several very different oaks among them, some pines and also exotic species such as ebony or zebrano. Lucent is available in 16 colours in the standard range. Hesse Lignal’s RS System lacquer delivers on performance and safety

Hesse Lignal’s RS System produces outstanding smoothness

With over 100 years at the forefront of wood coatings, Hesse Lignal has worked tirelessly to build trust, deliver quality and progress during this period. This continual product development moved wood coatings forward again when the company set its research and development laboratory a goal to develop a lacquer free from the hazards of acid-curing lacquers. The RS System is built in a radically different way compared to traditional acid-curing lacquers. Hesse does not use aromatic solvents in its lacquers – such as xylene, toluene and methanol – which can cause headaches, dizziness and nausea. With more serious exposure, these compounds can be life-threatening. These chemicals have been removed from the RS system in order to secure customers’ well-being; Hesse will not compromise on its customers’ health at any cost. Free from methanol, Hesse Lignal’s RS System does not compromise health

F&JP_284pre.indd 24

The RS System is affordable with an excellent cost/benefit ratio

Hesse continually reacts to research on chemicals including classification of formaldehyde as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer over a decade ago. Classic acid-curing lacquers release 10-25 times more formaldehyde than the Hesse RS System where it is far below the E1 limit of 0.1ppm. Formaldehyde was classified as Carc 1B (may cause cancer) and Muta Level 2 (shown to induce DNA mutations) by the European Parliament on the 1st April 2015 – implanted on all labelling and packaging from 1st June 2015. As well as health and safety, Hesse has given equal attention to the quality of the finishproducing a system that is a fast-drying multi-

coat with high build and an elegant surface feel. The RS System comes in varying gloss levels in both clear and colours and is suitable for almost any kind of interior wood surface. Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. The uniquely close relationship between Hesse and Redwood ensures that customers buying this system have the benefit of strong technical back-up answering queries on applications over the phone and on site if required. It was back in the late 1970s when James L Taylor manufacturing from Poughkeepsie, New York State, sold its first rotary clamping systems in the UK to what was then one of the largest joinery manufacturers in the country, Magnet & Southern. The machines were installed by a young, fresh-faced engineer from Taylor by the name of Michael Burdis.

Taylor Clamping Systems – still ‘gluing’ strong

Some 38 years later, Michael is still at Taylor, now in the role of chief executive with the other constants being its long-standing cooperation with JJ Smith as UK agent and its continued success in supplying clamping equipment that has been specifically designed for solid wood edge and face laminating. The basic principles behind the design and general operation of the machines has also remained the same, following Taylor’s philosophy that they must be well built, well engineered, simple to use and, above all, be reliable. Because of this, there are some Clamp Carriers still working in the UK that were originally supplied 30-plus years ago. More recently, machines have been supplied to a number of well-known companies producing a range of laminated components such as stair parts, joinery sections, block gluings for turning, worktops, tabletops and panels. The use of engineered timber sections is increasingly becoming more common due to the

F&JP_284pre.indd 26

cost of some timbers coupled with stability advantages laminated material gives. Room temperature PVA glues and the Taylor Clamp Carrier have long been recognised as the most versatile and reliable edge/face gluing process ever developed for the woodworking industry. While machinery in the woodworking sector, year on year becomes more sophisticated, it is in some ways refreshing that Taylor machines have remained largely unchanged, in particular the construction and design of the clamp arms which Taylor says “can not be bettered” for the job they are required to do. They incorporate a number of important features not found on other types of mechanical clamp that help ensure a quality glue joint is produced. However what Taylor has done is continued to design and update the method of clamp tightening/loosening to make the cycle times of the machine as fast as possible. The systems now available are standard pneumatic (entry level), semi automatic pneumatic or hydraulic (mid level), fully automated hydraulic or super

automated hydraulic (top level). Each machine is spec’d up to suit customers’ individual production requirements with working lengths ranging from 2.5 to 6.3m and section numbers ranging from 6 to 40. As standard, the clamp arm maximum opening is 1015mm but larger sizes are available on request. Material up to 150mm in thickness can be laminated when using the optional rocker plates, while the special heavy duty 402 type clamps can laminate up to 250mm in thickness. Taylor also manufactures a range of PVA glue applicators that can offer an even and metered spread of the adhesive on to the lamel prior to clamping.

For lower level production of laminated components, there is the popular JLT range of static Clamp Racks. They use exactly the same type of clamp arm as on the rotary system with all the same design features, the only difference is the clamps are manually tightened/loosened and are mounted on a static rack which has five levels. Unlike sash clamps that take up valuable bench/floor space, JLT Clamp Racks can be positioned against a wall with the facility to hang the clamps vertically when not in use. There are two frame sizes available, 2.4m with 18 clamp arms and 3.6m with 30 clamp arms. The clamps easily slide from side to side or hook in on any level. For laminating longer length material two racks can be bolted together. In addition to being able to produce laminated parts, the JLT systems can be used to clamp up frames, doors etc. JJ Smith always carries in stock the JLT range and so they are available for immediate delivery. In addition, it usually has a Taylor rotary machine set up and available for demonstration/testing in its Liverpool showroom. Sales director, Guy Stanley, comments: “Like a lot of American manufactured machinery, the Taylor JLT equipment may not be as pleasing on the eye as the equipment coming from Europe.

However, it is extremely well engineered, robustly built and designed to do a job. As the saying goes it does what it says on the tin. “We feel it is quite an achievement to be partnering a company for close on 40 years and this has only been possible due to the excellent working relationship we have with Taylor and the fact that the equipment they manufacture is

still the number one choice for companies who have a requirement to produce edge and face laminated components.” Michael Burdis comments: “We are proud of the fact that our clamps are still as popular today as they were 40 years ago, not just in the UK but worldwide. The new minimax circular saw represents not only an important development within SCM Group technologies, but also a unique project of its kind.

SCM Group introduces the new Minimax SiX circular saw with tilting blade SCM’s new Minimax SiX circular saw is a squaring machine with +/- 46° tilting blade and powered-programmed movement, which positions itself in a technological level where there is no competition. The double blade tilting technology brings many important advantages compared with other circular saws. The tilted cut in both angles (positive and negative) is carried out without having to flip the panel – in this way the exposed face is safeguarded. There is also the possibility of a tilted cut in both panel angles with shaped and profiled upper face. Options available include adding specialist machinery which will allow jointing grooves on tilted angles. Operators can work even more safely. They can work without the necessity of shapes or non-conventional and unsafe solutions, thus avoiding changing the work routine. It is no longer the responsibility of the operator to adapt to the machine and there is no longer the necessity to lift and turn heavy pieces to be cut, but it is the machine that adapts to the needs of its user. Individual craftsmen and small manufacturers can no longer do without the new Minimax SiX.

F&JP_284pre.indd 28

A small innovation with minimal investment, it offers the opportunity of more efficient and effective machining with the result of a higher comfort, precision and quality. The Minimax SiX circular saw highlights include: • Saw-blade unit with blade up to Ø400mm with installed scoring unit, tilting from +46° to -46° • Programmed saw-blade unit movement (lifting/tilting), controlled by NC

• Adjustable scoring unit (lifting and movement) from outside the machine • 150mm scoring blade diameter • Electronic digital readouts for blade tilting and lifting from control panel • Overhead blade protection with manual adjustment for machining with tilted saw-blade unit • Optional mobile control panel 0115 977044 scmgroup.me.uk

Cheshire Custom Kitchens was launched in 2013 by Les Sutton, and has gone from strength to strength. Offering quality kitchens in a range of colours and styles, including painted style doors, gloss, country and Shaker, the company has a strong customer base in the north-west of England.

Superior quality with J & C O’Meara’s Genisis 512S edgebander Purchasing his machinery and equipment exclusively from J & C O’Meara, Les upgraded his edgebander to a Genisis 512S in October 2014. Les has purchased all his woodworking machinery from J & C O’Meara. When he was just starting up, he could only visit the showroom on a Saturday and Carl O’Meara was willing to open up for him. That, and the service that Les received, have earned his loyalty. The first edgebander Les bought was, as he says, “the only one that we could afford at the time. As we started making a bit of money we were able to upgrade the machine”. He is delighted with the quality of the Genisis 512S. When asked about the advantages of the new machine, Les particularly quoted the pre-milling station. This allows the operator to reference the edge prior to edgebanding, removing any scorer marks or chips caused during handling. Les reports that the superior quality this produces has led to considerable repeat business, and to new business coming to Cheshire Custom Kitchens through word of mouth. Another advantage of the Genisis 512S was the option to use PVC. Les says: “With the PVC edging, we can do our own doors as well. When we first started up we used to buy in our doors, then we thought, we can do it ourselves!”

He continues: “Made-to-measure doors often attract a high premium, but for us it is just a board cut to a certain size that we can edge.” Les is also considering moving into worktop production, made possible by the Genisis 512S edgebander. The new machine has brought the ability to apply 1 or 2mm edges as opposed to 0.4mm on the original machine: and while the original only worked at 5m/min, the Genisis 512S runs at 12m/ min. Time had also been lost as the trimming stations had to be permanently kept clean due to having to also machine away the soft glue on the excess of the tape. This problem has been eliminated with the Genisis 512S. Now, the scraping, solvent spray and buffing stations restore edge quality after trimming, and the edge pre-heating station assists bonding of the edge, particularly during the colder months. Les comments: “On the old edgebander, we would have to clean and sand after edging, now it goes into the machine one side and comes out the other, clean. It cuts the time to produce a kitchen by half!” Before purchasing the Genisis 512S, Les would allow a day and a half to produce each kitchen. Since then, he has gradually increased production so now he can produce two kitchens a day, or in other words up to 10 kitchens per week. “At first we had little niggling problems, as you always do, but through speaking to Carl we were able to solve them. He talks you through any problems, and so we have speeded up the process while we have had the machine, as we learn how to adapt and change things,” Les says.

“Since we have had the new machine from Carl, it has just had so much repeat business and recommendations by word of mouth that we have been kept very busy. People are being recommended to come to us because of the quality of the cabinetry.”

When asked if he would recommend the edgebander, Les comments: “Yes, I would definitely recommend the edgebander as well as the company. And I would definitely recommend the pre-miller as well – it saves you so much time and the work goes out in so much better quality. “We have never advertised our business, and yet since we have had the new machine from Carl it has just had so much repeat business and recommendations by word of mouth that we have been kept very busy. People are being recommended to come to us because of the quality of the cabinetry.” He concludes: “The edgebander has made our lives an awful lot easier. It can do everything for us.” 01704 893109 info@ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

Arbor Forest Products chooses Salvador

The company has long established supply agreements with some of the finest sawmills in Scandinavia and Russia, and its adjacent mill facility at New Holland North Lincolnshire can process more than 35 million metres of timber per annum. In spite of its existing capacity however, the company recognised the need to further update and increase its cross-cutting performance, subsequently approaching Andy Walsh, sales director at Daltons Wadkin, for information concerning the renowned Salvador range of high-speed cross-cutting systems for which Daltons Wadkin is the sole UK distributor. Andy put forward a Salvador Superpush 250 Optimus push-feed fully-programmable optimising saw with automatic loading system, which met all of Arbor Forest’s requirements. Accordingly, the new Salvador was delivered, installed and commissioned by Daltons Wadkin at Arbor Forest’s New Holland mill and has been in full production ever since. The Salvador replaced an existing saw, which required four operators for loading and unloading, but the new crosscut being equipped with chain loading, waste trap door and automatic outfeed/ejection has enabled one man operation. Andy said: “It was a privilege to supply a very significant and high-profile business like Arbor Forest and we are confident that the Salvador Superpush 250 will have a very positive impact on their production facility.” 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

Established in 2011, Hertfordshire based Quest Joinery has become a leading provider of high-quality joinery for both commercial and residential clients. An increase in workload and orders, however, saw the company need to expand its workforce and production facility to keep up with demand.

Quest Joinery becomes first UK company to invest in a Homag Venture BMG 114 “It has always been in our business plan to invest in a CNC and the need for expansion meant we decided to automate production processes ahead of our original timeline,” explains Allan Jackson, production director at Quest Joinery. “Once we agreed it was time to invest in new machinery, we spent a couple of months researching the market thoroughly.” Making the right choice with Homag “Of the brands we evaluated, Homag was the most accommodating. They arranged for us to visit another of their customers, East Coast Fittings. There we were able to experience the Homag Venture 109M CNC in a working environment. In addition, we received a full CNC machine demonstration at Homag UK’s Castle Donington showroom. “The concept of having a CNC machine was new to us, so it was essential that we picked the right model for our facility. With our prior knowledge and experience of CNC technology

being limited, it was fantastic to be able to speak to the machine operator and ask any questions we had. This all helped to give us the confidence we needed to make the right decision. “The Homag team were very professional and had a lot of time for all our questions. They displayed the same caring approach to business as we give to our customers. This was very reassuring and made the decision to purchase a Homag BMG 114 CNC machine easy. “The confidence we had in Homag and its machinery meant we were excited, rather than nervous, to be the first company in the UK to install the new Venture BMG 114. Naturally, we thought we might experience some teething troubles, but actually we didn’t encounter any issues at all. The BMG is proving to be a fantastic addition to our facility.” The Homag BMG 114 CNC – superior technology “Homag has a reputation within the market for being a step ahead of the competition. This was

clearly evident as the BMG 114 has no limitations compared to some of the other CNCs we viewed. Although it wasn’t the cheapest machine we looked at, the BMG 114 was a much higher specification than we were originally looking for and the additional features have been a welcome bonus, more than justifying the investment. “As a bespoke joinery company, the versatility of the machine was really important to us. On a daily basis we produce a mix of work, including doors, wall panelling, reception desks and units. So, we chose the pod and rail system because we do a lot of solid work as well as bespoke intricate projects which require high levels of precision. “In terms of tools, we started with a basic set, the idea being to add more tools as we progressed. We initially invested in cutting tools and an aggregate head; this gave us the ability to cut shapes and carry out complex work, such as cutting locks out of door sets and producing intricate joint details. “Our products use a wide variety of materials including leather and brass, and the BMG 114

HOMAG Venture BMG 114 – designed to allow operator access from all four sides

ensures accurate cut outs for these inserts. “What really impressed us about the BMG 114 is the ability to operate it from all four sides. It means you don’t need to worry about where you place the machine, as it’s accessible from every side. This is great for a smaller factory, especially as the machine itself already has a 15% reduction in footprint size. So even placing the CNC in a corner space is no longer an issue. “In addition to this, the Bumper Safety Rail technology means the machine automatically stops itself if the moving gantry is about to come into contact with operators or any other obstruction. If the machine does come too close and it stops, there are no delays in production. “Once the obstruction has cleared, it instantly restarts itself after a couple of seconds without the need for any re-programming. The technology removes the need for any fencing or matting which means you can work all round the machine. “The BMG 114 is running Homag’s woodWOP software. Our operators visited Homag UK at Castle Donington for software training and thought the training course was comprehensive. Despite having a few weeks gap between completing the training course and the installation of the machine, the operators were still able to get to grips with it really quick. It is very clear that the software has been designed with the user in mind and has been kept simple and intuitive.”

35% increase in production for Quest Joinery “The CNC has not only increased production output by 35%, but it has also allowed us to expand our product offering. It has enabled us to be able to take on larger projects and we are now completing work in-house, such as sign writing and engraving which we previously outsourced. Without this new machine, we simply would not be able to turn over what we are doing today. “Previously, parts of our production were carried out by hand, but the CNC has reduced manual labour levels for us. As a result, our repeatable accuracy and quality has increased which in turn has led to a lower volume of waste. We are producing the same items before in a fraction of the time and the quality is in a totally different league from where we were. “In terms of paying for the machine, we used Homag finance to arrange a five-year payment plan. They came highly recommended within the industry and the terms were simple and easy to understand. Now the BMG is operational, we predict it will pay for itself within 30 months. “As part of our expansion, we also invested in a Homag Ambition 1650 edgebander with both hotmelt and PU glue options. This was to replace our smaller and older existing edgebander. It will provide us with the capabilities to further expand our product range to include fire-rated doors,” concludes Allan Jackson. 01332 856500 homag.com

A new CEHISA Pro-12 edgebander from leading distributor Daltons Wadkin has increased product quality and workflow efficiency at Somerset-based Intrafit.

CEHISA – a perfect fit for Intrafit

Founded in 2000, Intrafit specialises in the design, manufacture and installation of custom cabinetry for dental and medical establishments. The company has built a strong reputation for delivering the highest quality products using superior grade components built by experienced craftsmen. 17 years on and the company is expanding into kitchen manufacturing, now accounting for some 25% of the production. Director Hugh Boswell and his team visited the W16 exhibition to vet possible replacements for their existing edgebander. “We needed to produce a higher quality edged door than we could produce on our existing egdebander. We went to the W16 show with an open mind. After looking at several machines we narrowed it down to the CEHISA and two others,” comments Hugh. “When we looked into the finer details, build quality and general effectiveness, the CEHISA fitted the bill perfectly. “We mainly use EVA glue switching between

white and black colours depending on the job,” Hugh continues. “It was essential that we could quickly and efficiently swap between colours without having to spend hours purging the glue pot of the old glue colour – a particular problem when going from black to white glue.” The CEHISA Pro-12 was supplied with two DUO-MELT glue pots, each capable of operating with EVA or PUR glue. One is kept for white adhesive, the other for darker colours. Swapping the pots takes just 15 minutes. Set-up for short runs or replacement panels can now be done quickly, reacting to site demands keeping the installation on schedule. The unique DUO-MELT unit developed by CEHISA offers a number of advantages over traditional units. Alex Dalton of Daltons Wadkin explains: “The main advantage of the DUO-MELT is the ability to quickly and easily swap between EVA and PUR adhesive using the same glue pot. A quick drain function empties the contents of the pot in a just a few minutes before the next glue type can be added.” Of course, the CEHISA Pro-12 offers far more advantages beyond the glue pot. Working with coiled edging from 0.4 to 3mm, and solid edging up to 8mm, the Pro-12 is equipped with premilling, end trimming, top and bottom trimming, corner rounding, radius scrapers, glue scrapers and buffing unit. The corner rounding unit features separate

working heads for the top and bottom corners for a superior finish even at higher feed speeds. An intuitive 10in touch screen control provides the operator with quick access for setting the powered rise and fall (for panel thicknesses between 8 and 60mm), engagement of working units, fault diagnostics and more. For ultimate efficiency, the CEHISA Pro range offers optional automatic setting between either two or five pre-set tape thicknesses. The operator can switch between saved programmes using the touch screen and the machine automatically sets the working units. “We have been operating the CEHISA for around five months now. Before the CEHISA we had to spend a significant amount of time finishing the doors by hand. Now, the product comes off the CEHISA and it is ready to fit,” enthuses Hugh. “It has streamlined our production and assembly area completely.” You can see the CEHISA range of models, including the Pro-12, on demonstration at the Daltons Wadkin purpose-built showroom in Nottingham. “In the competitive world of joinery, you need the latest equipment to survive,” begins Lee Summers, managing director of Summers Joinery. “As a bespoke joiner, I sell skill. That’s why it is crucial for my team to work with the very best machinery in order to create the very best results.”

Summers: selling skill

Summers Joinery was established in 1973 by Lee Summer’s father, Lawrence. It now has 13 joiners and six office staff located at its Coventry premises.

Specialising in bespoke, fitted furniture and no stranger to working on large commercial projects, the Coventry-based joiner purchased Striebig’s Control 6224 vertical panel saw from machinery supplier, TM Machinery. But why was the Striebig the right machine for Summers Joinery? Lee explains: “For me, the saw brand was a nobrainer. I knew Striebig was the best saw in the world but we needed TM Machinery’s knowledge to specify the right machine for us. They visited us on site and took an interest in what we did, offering practical advice along the way. We talked though a number of options and together, we chose the right machine and accessories that would work for us. The team was refreshingly honest and had experience in the sector that was second to none.” The growing business, which has recently acquired a further joinery business to expand its product portfolio and workforce, was using a 30-year-old saw that was proving unreliable when working on large-scale projects requiring high levels of accuracy. To maintain the highest product standards, Lee needed a saw that could offer on-going reliability

F&JP_284pre.indd 40

and continual accuracy on a wide range of projects. He also wanted the facility to work with jumbo sheet sizes, so he opted for the longest bed available, but he also wanted flexibility and increased speed when working with short batch runs and one-off designs. “Seeing the machine in action at W16 sealed the deal for me. The team went through the saw in fine detail and the results spoke for themselves. It was this demonstration that made me add the electric vertical cut stop to my order. I saw how it simplified the cutting process further and reduced potential errors. It was worth every penny.” De-skilling the job was a big factor for the family-run joinery. Lee explains: “We’re homegrowing tomorrow’s joiners with apprenticeships but it takes a long time for someone to become a skilled joiner, especially at the level we work at. This in mind, we were keen for junior staff members, who don’t currently possess the level of skills our joiners need, to help further in the manufacturing process. By introducing a Striebig, an unskilled team member can accurately and confidently cut the materials to size with minimal training thanks

Summers Joinery added an electronic positioning system and scoring saw to its ‘Control’ 6224 vertical panel saw to increase productivity and limit errors.

to the simple touch screen display, automatic positioning system – which is featured in both directions – and built-in scoring system. Similarity brings knowledge, so the team has quickly grown in confidence and we have effectively gained a man thanks to the machine’s fool-proof operation.” The Control vertical panel saw’s début performance was one Lee admits would not have been easy with the old machine. “We were contracted to help with the restoration of some offices in Bristol,” he recalls. “It was a tightly priced contract and it would have taken considerably longer with our old saw. We also wouldn’t have been able to achieve the same level of accuracy without the Striebig. “The project saw us working with a lot of birch ply, which is notoriously difficult to work with because of the break outs you often get on the back face but, thanks to the Striebig’s fully automated system and programmable control system, the whole process was streamlined. It would have been extremely challenging to have completed the job in the time frame we were given without the Striebig and it would have certainly eroded our profit margin.”

Oxford Dining Room Project

Striebig’s ‘Control’ vertical panel saw features an automated cut cycle with panel end detection and a laser-assisted indication for horizontal cuts. It also boasts a simple touch-screen operating system and an accuracy of 0.1mm on every cut.

F&JP_284pre.indd 41

The saw is now continually being used to complete time-sensitive projects commissioned around the world. Lee explains: “Many of our overseas projects have tight deadlines. A cargo plane or ship won’t wait for late deliveries. I don’t think the team and I fully appreciated just how fast processing would be with the Striebig. It has the potential to open a lot of doors for us.” As well as daily panel processing, the Striebig’s next big project will include a large shopfitting exercise for a well-known electrical components chain and on-going commercial contracts in the UK. Lee adds: “If we had to specify a machine again, there is nothing I would add or take away and this is down to TM’s product knowledge and guidance. Thanks to the introduction of the Striebig, we’ve been able to increase our productivity by 40-50% and we’re on track to see a return on investment within the next five years. “We have plans for growth and we need the right equipment to do this. We’re confident that by introducing such a high calibre machine into our business, we’ll be able to reach our target of a £2.5m turnover in the next 18 months.” 0116 271 7155 tmmachinery.co.uk

The Chinese furniture manufacturer’s transition from a manual to an automated, digital cutting process yields lower operational costs, increased flexibility and consistent quality.

Trayton Group launches into the digital era with Lectra

From its beginnings 20 years ago as a small sofa workshop, Trayton has grown to a three-factory, 2000-person enterprise, manufacturing fabric- and leatherupholstered furniture for some of the world’s most famous brands such as Ikea and BoConcept. In 2005, company founder and CEO Simon Lichtenberg’s vision of making well-designed, high-quality leather furniture accessible to everyone became a reality when Trayton launched its own furniture brand, Simon Li. The company’s manual fabric and leather cutting process necessitated heavy reliance on operator knowledge for accurate cutting and quality control. It also hindered the manufacturer’s production flexibility. Difficulty finding skilled operators and rising labour costs in China, as well as stronger pressure on prices and delivery times contributed to making this production method impractical. Getting answers through in-depth analysis A Lectra customer since 2012, Trayton executives did not need to look far for a knowledgeable, trustworthy partner to guide their transformation from a manual to an automated process. “We were looking at the industry as a whole and, in particular, Lectra’s background in research into this industry and the way these details are reflected in their equipment,” explains Thunder Chen, COO, Trayton Group. “However, equipment is only aspect of automation. The real issue is the entire proces – from product development to manufacturing to final sale – and how to connect the whole process together,” Thunder adds. After an initial on-site analysis of the plant,

F&JP_284pre.indd 42

production tempo and KPI data from certain operations, Lectra proposed the Vector and Versalis solutions, for fabric and leather cutting respectively. “This preparatory work and analysis allows us to gain a rapid and accurate understanding of the areas that are causing the customer problems. We can then provide them with the optimal business and improvement plan,” explains Pan Chunjian, account manager at Lectra. The Lectra and Trayton teams then worked together to re-design the company’s processes based on best practices and implement the solutions in a way that allowed Trayton to quickly experience the benefits.

two to three percentage points,” says Thunder. Adopting Versalis and Vector has also enabled Trayton to simplify its staffing needs. “Now, we require a much lower level of leather cutting. Operators mainly need basic computing skills; it is much easier to find workers with this skill set,” Thunder explains. With the help of Vector, two operators can manage the work that required eight operators when using a manual fabric-cutting process. Greater production flexibility has opened up more opportunities for business growth. “In the past, we would have felt that producing short runs was too difficult. Now all of these orders can be handled by the machine so we are happy to do them,” continues Thunder.

A seamless transition from tradition to technology Lower operational costs, consistent quality and an accelerated production flow are the main advantages Trayton has attained with digitalisation. By automating its cutting process, the company has eliminated unnecessary material waste and ensured a stable quality of cut pieces. “Since we have started using this equipment, there have been no more mistakes. As a result, our material consumption rate has improved by

Continuing collaboration brings continuous improvements Co-operation between the two teams extends beyond solution implementation and into continuous improvement activities. During a follow-up visit to the site, the Lectra support team realised that there was room for improvement in terms of the leather-cutting efficiency rate. Working together, the Trayton and Lectra teams performed an in-depth optimisation of some of the Versalis parameters. “In terms of improvements relating to patterns and standard adjustment of our techniques, we were able to increase the overall yield of cutting efficiency by over two percentage points within around two months,” declares Thunder. “Lectra has been a very good partner for us. Solution implementation, training of our employees, improved material use rates and cutting accuracy, everything has been great,” concludes Simon Lichtenberg. lectra.com

“Since we have started using this equipment, there have been no more mistakes. As a result, our material consumption rate has improved by 2-3%.”

Howard Brothers Joinery is a bespoke sub-contract joinery specialist. The business has an enviable reputation for the manufacture and installation of all aspects of bespoke joinery and associated trades including metalwork, glass, marble, granite and a wide range of technical materials. The company’s work can be seen in many of the leading commercial and domestic buildings in the UK and globally.

HOMAG delivers total machine interconnectivity for Howard Brothers Joinery Howard Brothers Joinery has one aim: Building Better Lives. This mission requires not only the attention to detail for which the business is widely known, but also commitment and a need to ensure it has the very best tools for its work. Over the last two or three years, the company has been on a journey to lay the foundations for the future growth of the business. As part of the process, Howard Brothers Joinery has evaluated the opportunities afforded by advances in both software and machinery. “We do a lot of projects in the high-end commercial and residential fit-out markets,” explains director, Tim Hedges. He continues: “The work is bespoke and time frames are always very tight so it is important for us to have the systems in place to cope with the pressures these factors exert on the business. “Our overall plan is to take advantage of the interconnectivity of our machinery via software,

so that we can maximise the efficiencies this brings to our production. To do this effectively we believe that it is important to have machinery from the same manufacturer as this eliminates any potential incompatibility issues. “We have had Homag machinery for around 20 years and it has always performed to a very high standard, both in terms of reliability and quality. Our portfolio from Homag now includes a Highflex edge bander, a BHX 200 CNC and, our most recent addition, an HPP 300 beam saw which was bought to replace an aging beam saw.” Bottleneck in production “Our old beam saw from Homag UK had done us proud. We bought it back in 1999 and it has certainly been put through its paces in the last 17 years, emerging with flying colours. Technology, however, has moved on, particularly on the software front and we began

to experience a bit of a bottleneck in production with the saw not able to keep up with the significantly increased volume of work we now handle. “The decision was made, therefore, to invest in a new saw and in line with our agreed policy to stay with one machine manufacturer, we talked to Homag about a replacement. The saw we set out to buy was significantly less specified than the one we ended up buying. “Charles Smith from Homag UK was leading us on the specification of the machine and we were happy with the spec we finalised with him. Having placed the order, another machine then became available at a significantly improved lead time, so we decided to upgrade. “This model has some additional features that we didn’t think we needed, however, now it’s installed and operational we are really pleased we made the decision to go for the higher specified saw, despite the increased price tag.

30% efficiency gains for Howard Brothers Joinery with the new HPP 300

“Whilst our MagiCut software was able to talk to the old saw, it was limited in its capacity. We were not able to collate all the cutting parts and it required a lot more user intervention, whereas with the new HPP 300 and optimisation software, we are able to send batch manufacturing sequences direct from the office down to the new saw. The saw then generates the best cutting plans enabling us to be more efficient in both material usage and time on the saw.” 30% efficiency gains “Because we had a similar saw before, it wasn’t such a transformational leap for us, so we weren’t expecting a significant gain in throughput. Since we’ve had the HPP 300, however, we’ve been pleasantly surprised at the speed in terms of how we are able to process work through that department. “This is a consequence of two things: firstly, the machine itself is 10-15% quicker than the previous saw. The more significant benefit, however, has come from the software integration that allows us to optimise directly onto the saw. It then orientates the cutting plans and allows us to plan ahead in terms of material delivery to the saw. “Overall, we believe we have made about a 30% efficiency gain out of this set up. In addition, we have eliminated any downtime that was occurring due to the ageing of the old saw. “The Homag HPP 300 has exceeded our expectations. We knew we were going to get a benefit, but it’s better than we had expected. As a result of these unforeseen productivity gains, we now expect the new saw to pay for itself earlier than we had planned.” Homag – professional, friendly and efficient “As a company to deal with, we find Homag very clear and transparent; we pay a premium

F&JP_284pre.indd 45

to have its equipment, but we can easily justify the extra cost because of the interconnectivity of the machinery and software it offers. We know we can buy cheaper products out there, but we believe Homag products are a fair price for what they deliver to our business. “Charles Smith always bends over backwards to help us, whilst Adele Hunt and the team at head office are always very professional, supportive and help us whenever they can. “We are very happy relying on Homag products to give us the results we want. They are enabling us to follow through on our promise to deliver solutions right first time, from design to delivery of the finished product and to help us in our commitment to Building Better Lives,” concludes Tim Hedges. HPP 300 – panel dividing saw The HPP 300 beam saw is equipped for a wide range of cutting applications and is ready for networked production. It offers high performance in a compact space and is suitable for producing in batch size 1 as well as in smaller series. For those looking to automate storage and retrieval, the saw is ready for connection to automatic horizontal storage systems. The HPP 300 has an 80mm saw blade projection as standard; customers, however, can select 95mm as an option. The saw is easy to operate, reliable and efficient and comes with an ergonomic table height of 920mm. The rugged pressure beam guarantees first-class cut quality whilst the program fence delivers precision and dimensional accuracy. Its newly-designed saw carriage provides for exceptionally smooth running, high precision and low energy consumption. 01332 856500 homag.com

Wiltshire-based Jonathan Rose Fine Furniture was founded in 1997 to provide a professional furniture-making and engineering service to designers and private clients alike. The company’s determination to maintain quality craftsmanship has never wavered, and the highly skilled team of craftsmen is dedicated to the efficient manufacture of individual pieces of furniture.

Kündig keeps things running smoothly at Jonathan Rose Fine Furniture The care that managing director, Jonathan Rose, takes in ensuring his furniture is just right extends to his choice of machinery. Last year, he took delivery of a new Kündig Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L sander. “We make high-end bespoke furniture and we do lots of veneered work,” comments Jonathan. “It requires a top-of-the-range sander that my staff can rely on.” Jonathan had previously purchased a Kündig Uniq-S edge sander from Carl O’Meara of Kündig. “We had had it for maybe about 10 years, and it has proved to be a very good machine. Carl was very helpful when the edge sander was installed, so I was very happy to return to him for a quote for the wide-belt sander, when I knew our existing wide-belt sander was reaching the end of its useful life.” Jonathan uses the sander on his full range of unique furniture pieces. “We use it for veneer sanding and calibrating. It is designed for lacquer sanding as well and, while we have not used that facility much, it is good to know it is there.”

He continues: “One advantage is greater precision with veneer sanding – the sander is less likely to sand through the veneer, which is very thin and expensive. Marquetry as well: you might have a marquetry veneer pattern worth thousands of pounds, and you have to be confident you are not going to sand through.” The Kündig Brilliant sander gives Jonathan this confidence. Jonathan’s sander has two heads, and can sand workpieces 1350mm wide. He has taken up the oblique sanding option, and has noticed the improved quality that this option will provide. With oblique sanding, one head is slightly offset to the direction of travel. As a result, the slight defects that will appear on any sanding belt over time are not transferred to the workpiece, resulting in significantly improved quality, with consequent savings, both in time and expensive materials. The Brilliant is the mid-range Kündig widebelt sander. It can be supplied in a variety of configurations. Kündig sanders are manufactured to the highest standards within Europe, and new sanders come fitted as standard with an energy-saving mode: if no workpiece has been sanded for a given period of time, the energy-saving function kicks in.

F&JP_284pre.indd 46

Kündig wide-belt sanders are designed for ease of use. The working heads rise and fall automatically, rather than the work table, making life easier for the operator. The company estimates that this can save a workshop about 10-15% of the electricity that would otherwise have been used. Kündig wide-belt sanders are designed for ease of use. The working heads rise and fall automatically, rather than the work table, making life easier for the operator. The control panel has been designed with ease of use in mind – simple to read and to operate, while allowing complex instructions to be stored for future reference. When asked if he would recommend the sander, Jonathan replies: “Yes, absolutely. We have had good service. Carl is very easy to get on with: he has supplied me with other equipment as well!” 0845 833 0565 info@kundig.co.uk kundig.co.uk

AkzoNobel, in partnership with Symphony Coatings, has launched its new Duracid Formaldehyde Free wood coatings range in the UK. The products provide a great alternative to traditional acid curing products and are safer for spray shop workers, and end customers.

Formaldehyde Free partnership with AkzoNobel Akzo Nobel developed the Duracid FF range in response to the growing concern over poor air quality and the presence of airborne pathogens in homes and cities around the world, together with increasing regulation in the industry. In 2014, formaldehyde was reclassified as a Carcinogen Category 1B. As a Category 1 carcinogen, the use of formaldehyde is now regulated by the Carcinogen and Mutagen Directive in EU workplaces. The central concept of this prime directive is ‘protection of workers against risks to their health and safety, including the prevention of such risks, arising or likely to arise from exposure to carcinogens or mutagens at work’. AkzoNobel’s Duracid FF range can greatly reduce the risk to human health by removing the formaldehyde carcinogen whilst still providing a system with the same high-quality attributes as traditional Acid-curing and PU Alkyd coatings required in the industry, with no yellowing. It provides excellent adhesion, drying, and stacking properties together with providing simple cleaning routines for the production line and equipment. Providing clean air that we can all breathe safely means air that is free from particulate matter, pathogens, smoke and dangerous gases. It takes the desire of industry and the various partnerships between manufacturers, suppliers and customers to ensure that the products used are as safe and clean as they can be. AkzoNobel launched the Duracid FF range in the UK in partnership with Symphony Coatings at the W16 Furniture and Joinery Exhibition and Elements show in October of 2016. The range was a finalist in the ‘Elements Award for Innovation’. Carl Circus, UK distribution manager, AkzoNobel Wood Coatings said: “Our strong partnership with Symphony Coatings provides us with the opportunity to really showcase the unique coating solutions we have to offer. Their scale and expertise means we can launch the Duracid FF range UK-wide and know that customers will get a first-class service and full technical support.” Daniel King, marketing manager for the Symphony Coatings group said: “Through our partnership with the world’s leading paint manufacturers, we are able to supply the latest innovative paints and coatings. We are delighted to have been chosen to launch the revolutionary new Duracid FF range from AkzoNobel in the UK to give our customers a safer alternative.” Symphony Coatings is a leading UK supplier of professional paints, lacquers and coatings, supported by market-leading capital equipment

and consumables. It provides a local service with full technical guidance and support from 10 sites across the UK. Daniel King added: “We have had a great response to the range with many new and existing customers switching to the Duracid FF range to remove formaldehyde from their spray shop coatings and prevent formaldehyde release for end users. Often switching from traditional AC products, customers demand fast drying and durable surfaces and find the Duracid FF range gives them the same performance with lower risk.” B2BExhibitions, a design focused Production Company discovered the Duracid FF range and its benefits at the W16 show. Greg Shire, managing director at B2BExhibitions said: “Before I heard about AkzoNobel’s formaldehyde-free paint supplied by Symphony Coatings, I had been using standard paint for the jobs that came through my business, CNC Warehouse. During a research trip to the W16 and Elements Show in Birmingham I decided to start using the new Duracid FF range.” He added: “After a very productive meeting with Symphony, I was completely taken with the Duracid FF paints, they sounded perfect for Storytime Beds, my new company that provides beds and bedroom furniture for children.” A set of comprehensive trials with Symphony

Coatings ensued with trials going so well that B2BExhibitions put the range into full-time production for all coating jobs. Greg Shire further commented: “The new Duracid FF paint looks and feels as good as, if not better, than the previous paints we’d been using. We now use it for every job that comes through the business. I am very happy with this high-performance paint and would recommend it to anyone working in the woodwork industry.” Daniel King finished by saying: “As a group we have been supplying AkzoNobel’s excellent Sikkens Wood Coatings range for over 10 years, providing full technical support and guidance. We are continually strengthening our partnership and are pleased to have extended this to include supplying and supporting their Duracid FF and Quantum PU Acrylic ranges across the UK.” sikkens-wood-coatings.co.uk

Dominic Ash specialises in high-end joinery and interiors. It produces premium quality designs in hard wood and contemporary materials for both the trade and general public. The company, based in Gloucestershire, has extensive experience in designing and building bespoke kitchens and in creating individual pieces of furniture for interiors.

Homag SWT 124 raises the quality bar for Dominic Ash Kitchens Founder and director of the business, Dominic Ash, trained for six years with a Quaker furniture maker in Somerset, before working on boat restoration in the Caribbean. His experience led to the development of his individual practice, with an emphasis on attention to detail, simple design and the use of quality materials. He opened his own workshop and established Dominic Ash Ltd in London in 1994. The company’s skilled team of joiners work on a wide range of commissions, from complete kitchens to individual pieces like teak basins. “Our business is focused on first class quality and individualism,” explains Ash. “The projects we undertake are bespoke and finishes range from solid wood and veneers to painted surfaces. Whatever the finish, however, we have to be absolutely certain that each piece we produce is sanded to give the perfect surface finish.” The search for a new sander “Last year, we decided that the time was right to replace our old sander which was getting very long in the tooth. As a small business, we have to make sure that every piece of machinery we invest in not only does the job required, but also offers value for money. “The woodworking exhibition at the NEC in October was the ideal place for us to see all the manufacturers under one roof. It enabled us to evaluate the wide-belt sanding machines on offer and get a feel for each supplier. “In terms of our manufacturing requirements, we were looking for a simple- and easy-tooperate sander that could handle solid wood and veneers with equal proficiency. Our existing sander was only 950mm wide and ideally we were looking for a machine that would allow us to process larger parts.” Homag fits the bill “Having seen the various wide-belt sanders in action, the one that impressed us most was the Homag SWT 124. With an 1100mm width capacity, simple operation and the ability to handle both solid wood and veneers, it was the perfect solution for our business. “Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for Homag, was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. He didn’t try to sell me the machine; he was straight-talking and very confident that the SWT 124 was the right model for our needs. “It was a refreshing approach as others had tried to sell us machines with ‘bells and whistles’

Homag has given us the right machine at a competitive price. It is an excellent all-round sander perfect for our bespoke work.” First class installation and training “As one would expect from a brand with the pedigree of Homag, the delivery, installation and training went exactly to plan. Our operators found the training very informative and were able to get the best out of the sander almost immediately. “Naturally with a new piece of equipment we experienced the odd teething issue, but hats off to Homag, these were sorted quickly and efficiently. All in all, our experience with Homag has been excellent and they will certainly be at the top of our short list when it comes to replacing other woodworking machinery,” concludes a delighted Dominic Ash. Homag SWT 100 Series The space-saving design of the Homag SWT 100 Series includes easy access to all functions to make changing sanding belts quick and easy. The 100 Series includes single- or twin-head options with either the air cushion sanding pad (acp), perfect for flat workpieces or the electronic

pneumatic system (eps) which, due to the small segment width of 50mm, provides optimal pressure across non-uniform workpieces. Dependent on the head combinations, the machines can execute sanding tasks including calibrating, fine solid wood sanding, veneered panels as well as intermediate lacquer sanding. Single-head models feature a combi-head with profiled steel contact roller and a workpiececontrolled air cushion sanding pad. The twin-head models feature a calibration head with profiled steel contact roller and a combi-head with profiled, rubberised 60° shore contact roller and a workpiece-controlled air cushion sanding pad. The twin-head machines offer sanding in a single pass with a two- grit sequence plus optional lacquer sanding. Both single- and twin-headed machines provide a working width of 1100mm, variable feed speed controlled by frequency inverter, a colour touchscreen operator terminal, a maintenance-free DC braking system, independently-driven sanding heads and poly V-belt drives. 01332 856500 info-uk@homag.com homag.com

Mirka cleans up with outstanding dust extractors Today, health and safety issues are becoming increasingly important and sanding tools and abrasives are made more and more efficient, with focus on dust-free applications. This development places higher requirements on the dust extractors. To meet these demands, Mirka is introducing three new high performance dust extractors to address the latest health and safety demands for low (L) and medium (M) class models: Mirka Dust Extractor 1230 L PC (Push & Clean) 230V, Mirka Dust Extractor1230 M AFC (AutoFilterCleaning) 230V and the Mirka Dust Extractor 1230 M PC (Push & Clean) 110V. The extractors have been designed to handle multiple sanding applications and surface sizes with ease. The new range comes with a 30-litre container, easily accessible flat filter, a high performance 1200W motor and one-stage turbine that creates 250mbar of suction with an airflow of 4500l/min as standard to assist in the efficient removal of particles

from the area being worked on. The extractors’ innovative features include an auto start function, which ensures they only run when the tool is in use, increasing the lifespan of the product and reducing the amount of noise produced. For extra space in the work area, the flat top of the extractor can be turned into additional storage with the ability to fasten the Mirka cases to the top of the machine, providing a complete sanding solution. The L class 230V and M class 110V models come with a push and clean filter cleaning system that is easy to use and provides a

simple process to maintain a clear filter. The M class 230v extractor is fitted with an automatic filter cleaning system, which cleans the filter every 15 seconds for increased performance as standard. It also has an airflow sensor that indicates when the suction is below optimal levels (below 20m/s) and excess dust might be in the air. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – Industrial of Mirka UK, says: “We are aware of the health issues associated with dust produced from a variety of sanding applications and we believe it is important that we offer users the

right tool for the job. In addition, our continued commitment to invest in our products is to ensure that they not only meet the standards expected by users but also assist in safeguarding their health and provide a dust-free environment to work in. “When purchasing a dust extractor, we always recommend a full risk assessment is carried out by an independent third party professional or specialist to ensure any dust extractor is fit for the purpose intended by the customer before they buy.” mirka.com

The knottec system from Power Adhesives is now available with the option of a brand new, battery-powered glue gun.

New applicator for unique knot filling system This unique repair process for knot defects and other forms of deep wood damage can now be used with the fully portable b-tec 807. The b-tec 807 has been designed to use the widely-available RYOBI 18V 1.5Ah lithium+ battery and charger, which can achieve recharge times of around 60 minutes. This battery includes an on-board four-stage fuel gauge to indicate how much charge is remaining, making it easier for users to know when a charge is required. It can also be used to run a range of RYOBI power tools. Knots and deep scratches in wood can be filled quickly and easily using a special knot-filling adhesive developed by the company, with the help of a 12mm hot melt glue gun like the b-tec 807. The system also includes a pair of handy heat-sink blocks that can be used to create a ‘form’ around any knot holes that go through, or are on the edge of, areas of wood that need repair. Once the damaged area has been filled, the knottec knot-filling adhesive takes just minutes to cool before the excess can be trimmed with a flush plane tool, such as the Mouseplane. The repaired area can then be sanded, painted or treated as normal, achieving a high-quality finish to the restored wood. Because it’s so tough, knottec is perfect for repairs to things like wooden doors, window frames, furniture, floors and more.

Knots and deep scratches in wood can be filled quickly and easily using a special knot-filling adhesive developed by the company, with the help of a 12mm hot melt glue gun like the b-tec 807 This knot-filling adhesive is also available in six different colours to help users achieve the best colour match possible. Power Adhesives offers a choice of two additional mains-powered 12mm glue guns for use with the knottec system – the light industrial tec 305 and the professional tec 820 – as well as the Mouseplane tool for trimming away excess glue. All Ney Hot Melt (EVA) adhesives for edgebanders are specially formulated exclusively for the company by some of the most eminent chemists in the industry. Feed speeds, viscosity, open time and application method all contribute to the quality of the bond and its aesthetic appearance. There is no such thing as ‘one size fits all’.

Ney offers an unrivalled bond With all its experience in this field, Ney is able to recommend precisely the glue that should be used on any given machine. It is false economy just to select an EVA based on price. The cheaper glues have less adhesive strength and contain more filler content which can burn or cook brown in the pot causing poor adhesion, an unsightly glue line and expensive maintenance costs to clean or repair the gluepot – not to mention the additional time spent cleaning the panel. PUR application is also becoming more and more popular, particularly when water ingress to the joint is a concern. Polyurethane glues are impervious to water admission and heat reactivation and give a stronger bond. The lighter application gram weight also reduces the glue line and goes some way to offset the increased cost of the glue. Ney provides a range of solutions from a completely sealed system using nitrogen as a blanket to prolong pot life, through to combimelt systems for occasional usage whereby the user can readily change between EVA and PUR application without inconvenience.

Ney recommends Technomelt PUR 270-7 and Technomelt PUR Cleaner 2 for its EBM and Fravol edgebanding machines. With fast-curing PVA for assembly work, different formulas for veneering and dowel insertion machines along with its Spray Safe adhesive for membrane pressing and Mitre-Tite contact adhesive – Ney really does have it pasted. Complementing these products is its panel wipe for effortless removal of adhesive residue, glue streaks, marker pens, pencil marks and other impurities on all kinds of plastic surfaces such as ABS, PVC, melamine, polypropylene etc. • Dries quickly without leaving streaks or film residue on surfaces • Suitable for use on ABS • Possesses a pleasant citrus aroma due to a natural lemon extract • Does not contain chlorinated or fluorinated hydrocarbons • Less consumption compared to traditional cleansing. 024 7630 8100 sales@ney.co.uk ney.co.uk

Leicester-based Advanced Machinery Services’ (AMS) new purpose-built showroom and training facility at its Skeffington Mill site is now in full swing.

New showroom and training facility for AMS The new low-carbon-footprint building has 28 new and refurbished machines in the showroom, all powered up and fully operational with extraction. This is a truly professional well-lit modern facility designed to deliver both training courses and demonstrations to its customers. The facility will also be constantly updated with the lastest technology available in the market. “Our business has seen tremendous growth over the last few years and this new showroom, training and retail facility is a major investment in our future,” claims Steve McGloin, a director at AMS. He continues: “We recognise the demands of the market are changing all the time. Customers want a choice, which is why we have just held our third very successful in-house machine festival

F&JP_284pre.indd 64

where over 90 companies have visited over the last 12 months. “Our new showroom and training facility will reflect this need, with both new and refurbished equipment on display. Also, from our point of view, having money tied up in stock is expensive, consequently, we want to fully utilise the showroom machinery by using it for training purposes as well. We offer training courses every month on different machines and they are always well attended.” For the training, AMS has extended its association with training company Didac. Over the last five or six years, AMS has developed close ties with Jon Gibson and Didac. Our companies share similar philosophies, so it was a perfect fit for us to develop a partnership with Jon

and his team.” Jon Gibson comments that when the opportunity arose to become part of this exciting new venture with AMS, the company jumped at the chance. He says: “AMS is centrally located in the UK and therefore ideally suited in terms of it being a convenient place for companies in the Midlands and the North to send staff for training.” Steve Foster, one of the directors at AMS, summarised that it is good for the industry to have a new modern open-plan facility that has state-of-the-art technology and the staff to operate it. 0844 844 9949 training@advancedmachinery.co.uk advancedmachinery.co.uk

TRAINING, SERVICE & MAINTENANCE

www.furnitureproduction.net

When properly maintained in accordance with the guidelines provided by the manufacturer or supplier, a CNC router will function continuously to its full potential for many years. Noel Archie, product manager at AXYZ International’s parent company in Canada, provides some useful hints as to what form this maintenance should take and how it should be implemented.

What you should know about CNC router maintenance Every CNC router will come with its own recommended maintenance programme and whilst this may be conscientiously followed, companies can sometimes fall short on what is actually required to ensure trouble-free operation. This shortcoming can often be attributed to an innocent oversight caused by a rushed production schedule or a temporary shortage of manpower. For example, it can be the result of a failure to ensure adequate lubrication of machine parts or incorrect specification of the routing spindle, both of which will create problems and lead to a shorter than predicted machine life. Murphy’s Law claims that anything that could go wrong will do so at the worst possible moment. This is especially true of routing when recommended maintenance guidelines are not adhered to at the specified times. Occasionally, machine downtime can be due to something unrelated to maintenance procedures such as an electrical failure caused by extensive dust particles in the production environment. This would be avoided if recommended maintenance guidelines are followed. It is important never to cut corners in order to speed up production or save on manpower costs. It should also be recognised that maintenance is a relatively short process, with the greasing of racks and bearings requiring only a few minutes of an operator’s time. It is the technology that goes into the construction of a CNC router that helps simplify maintenance. Routers now incorporate automated logs that provide machine updates on daily activity and remedial measures for any malfunctioning detected. This reduces the possibility of unexpected complications that could lead to machine downtime during a critical production run. A recommended maintenance schedule Many of the more advanced CNC routers include an entire maintenance log covering daily, weekly and monthly inspections. Contingent upon the type and make of router, maintenance schedules tend to vary but the following five guidelines apply to all machines: Cleanliness: Routers invariably operate in a dusty environment and it does not take long for bearings and controls to become polluted and this is a sure recipe for operating problems if not rectified on a daily basis. Manufacturers and suppliers recommend hand-sweeping of the router, while an air gun can be used to blow debris away from the bearings. Another fairly standard recommendation is to lower the air pressure during the cleaning process.

F&JP_284pre.indd 66

Change filters: If this sounds like an instruction found in an automobile manual there is a reason for the similarity. Just as clogged filters reduce engine efficiency, the same applies to a router’s controller, vacuum pumps and air lines. The frequency with which filters are replaced will vary, depending on the type of material being processed and environmental factors like the presence of dust and dirt. There is no standardised maintenance protocol but as a rule of thumb filters should be checked weekly and replaced as considered necessary. Lubrication: This is a fairly basic consideration that can sometimes be overlooked. Generally, routers do not require extensive lubrication but as with all production machinery breakdowns are inevitable if adequate lubrication is not carried out. An important consideration for router owners is that if it is found that a machine malfunction was caused by a failure to lubricate sufficiently the manufacturer’s warranty would be voided. Bearings, pumps, router spindles and knives need regular lubrication, but the frequency with which this is carried out will again be influenced by the type and make of machine, the extent of its use and the work environment in which it operates. Air supply cleaning: Most routers operate using air that has to be clean, dry and maintained at a steady pressure exceeding 80psi or six barometric. Damage to the router is likely in the short term if air pressure is not checked regularly and maintained at the recommended level.

Safe and appropriate electrical power: The caveat for electrically-powered machines applies equally to CNC routers, with the power connected safely as required by local regulations. Router failure is likely to occur in cases of poor electrical grounding, low voltage or insufficient capacity. As with all computer-operated machinery, power spikes will cause serious damage. Daily and weekly maintenance protocols invariably come with every CNC router. They include times for logging operation hours, general cleaning, air pressure readings and lubrication. Monthly inspection protocols include greasing of the racks, pinions and bearings, repair or replacement of the vacuum table gasket should this be necessary and cleaning of all filters. In addition, bi-annual maintenance protocols include replacement of all filters, vacuum performance testing and inspection and tightening of timing belts and transmissions. In conclusion, the best way to ensure optimal router performance is to rigidly follow the recommended maintenance guidelines. Failure to do so will result in premature wear and tear and owners left with an expensive but non-functioning piece of equipment as well as a drain on their balance sheets. Proper maintenance devoid of short cuts is imperative because routers are invariably an essential component of many manufacturing companies. 01952 291600 axyz.co.uk

In a world of ever increasing demands on time and quality it stresses the importance of doing the job right first time and with the right product.

When the going gets tough – use Sayerlack TU38** Range Lacquer! Movac Group Ltd as always is at the forefront of coating innovation with its partner Sayerlack and are always looking to give the correct solution. Sayerlack TU38** Polyurethane lacquer range is one such example. A Polyurethane for interior wood finishing, this self-sealer coating from Sayerlack provides excellent performance and achieves a ‘severe’ rating when tested to FIRA Standard 6250. Where performance and easy application (whether by conventional, electrostatic or robotic) are required TU38** meets the demand. This high build, thixotropic Polyurethane technology ensures very good vertical hold and pore wetting. TU38** provides fast drying and a smooth finish, making it suitable for many applications for example: chairs, veneered and solid wood furniture, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms whether used for the home or office. As a coat on coat system this minimises stock holding and the right product is always ready to be sprayed whether the technician is applying the first or second coat in the production run. Under the slogan “Tools as new”, leading tooling manufacturer, supplier and service specialist Leitz Tooling is putting the quality of its tool servicing at the forefront.

Tools – good as new As the largest supplier of tooling to British manufacturing, all Leitz tools are safety tested to BS EN 847 standards. From using the right tool for the right job for the best results, to the impact of poor or undermaintained tooling on noise, health and safety, finish quality or helping customers maximise their profitability. Leitz’s product spectrum includes the entire range of machine-driven precision tooling for machining solid wood, manufactured wood products and plastics and customers range from industrial manufacturers to small workshops in every manufacturing sector, be it window and timber construction, panel processing, advanced materials or furniture making. “We hear about all sorts of different production and manufacturing issues, from a poor finish right through to noise,” said Leitz Tooling’s national sales manager, Brian Maddox. “In many cases, the solution can be as simple as the tooling.” Leitz Tooling hears this from customers time and time again. “Looking at your true production cost per widget, product or panel can really help identify what potential issues might be. If you’re changing saw blades twice a shift, having to check for clogging up or have expensive rectification issues, take a closer look at the tooling and servicing you’re using.”

Precision service Leitz believes that when serviced tools leaving one of their services centres, they should be ‘as new’. Each of their service processes have been optimised for original producer quality. Cutting-edge service techniques enable Leitz to give like-new performance throughout the lifetime of the tool, and reliable pick-up and delivery is tailored to the demands of the customer. Derek Statham, Leitz Tooling’s national service manager said: “Even the best quality tool can only maintain its optimum performance if it is regularly maintained by specialists. At each of our eight UK service centres across the UK, we pride ourselves knowing that our attention to detail, in-house training and cutting-edge equipment gives the customer the best result time and time again.” Leitz uses the same machinery and programmes for its tool service that it use for its tool production, thus providing the best possible quality therefore giving the customer consistent tool performance.

huge drain on their businesses. With our tooling and support, they can get the right finish on the material first time, and in many cases save extraordinary amounts of money. “Companies can become fixated on the purchase price of tools, but correct, quality tools can have a positive impact on other costs. Quality service back up and monitoring are also crucial to reducing overall costs.”

Run the numbers The cost-effectiveness of a tool increases proportionally with the number of times it is resharpened. Not only is the number of service lives important, the consistency of the tool life is important too. All customers want is extended production runs, reduced down time, improved surface quality and less wasted material to increase their profits. For a true comparison, Leitz suggests businesses factor in the cost and frequency of their tooling servicing, the cost of downtime and running the business. Brian Maddox said: “The results are different for each business but customers continue to prove to us that buying cheap inferior tools is a

Diamond Leitz From a material profile sample or sketch, Leitz Tooling is now manufacturing polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tipped tools in-house. Derek Statham, Leitz Tooling’s UK’s national service and works manager, said: “Our modular design for shank tools solves most router machining needs reliably, quickly and economically, with ground shanks to a tolerance engineered for utilising in shrink technology. “Our customers are already seeing the benefits of the efficiency of high quality diamond as a cutting material, the low-price and fast delivery of this new service”. The tool’s performance can be further enhanced when used together with Leitz’s thermal Shrink-Fit system which, by eliminating

the need for collet system, makes tools essentially ‘mono-bloc’ ensuring even tooth wear, longer tool life and enhanced workpiece surface finish. By selecting the optimum PCD grade for the respective application, Leitz produces tooling with exacting quality standards dedicated to the customer’s requirements. A re-sharpening area of 3mm gives on average nine+ lives, further proving value and cost efficiency. Full support for the life of Leitz tools Leitz Tooling’s customer service and relationship building is at the heart of the company. When customers work with Leitz, they tap into the company’s unrivalled knowledge base. Leitz offers service and support for the life for every tool and system it manufactures, and the support does not stop there. Leitz offers tooling and production troubleshooting consultations at every exhibition. For the last three years, the company has run a series of seminars across the country on A+ energy rated future-proof timber window production demonstrating Leitz’s ThermoTech Window System. Fork Lift Truck Association endorses F-TEC The Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) has given a ringing endorsement to F-TEC – the Forklift Training Engineering Centre. Launched in July 2016 as a joint venture between the FLTA and the British Industrial Truck Association, F-TEC is the UK’s only dedicated fork lift training centre for engineers and technicians and addresses widespread concerns that too many courses were being delivered by individuals or organisations, neither accredited nor monitored for quality. “By any measure, F-TEC has proved a huge success and continues to surpass expectations,” says Peter Harvey, chief executive of the FLTA. “Apprentices already on FLTA courses have transferred seamlessly from colleges to F-TEC and all have given really positive feedback on the courses and the way they are taught – resulting in 100% satisfaction ratings in feedback questionnaires. “Similarly, F-TEC has successfully incorporated our programme of 19 different short courses for engineers, covering everything from electronics to LPG fuel systems, hydraulics to Thorough Examination, delivering them using state-of-the-art facilities in Swindon. Importantly, these courses are reviewed typically twice a year to ensure they meet the precise and changing needs of our industry.” Since opening its doors, F-TEC has increased the number of apprentices joining its courses by introducing an additional intake that is not restricted to the academic year. The success rate among apprentices is a very impressive 95%. 01635 277577 fork-truck.org.uk

Lamello’s Marco Ress to demonstrate in the UK Marco Ress, international demonstrator and area sales manager with Lamello, will be visiting five Axminster Tools & Machinery stores in early June. He will be demonstrating the wood jointing ingenuity of some of Lamello’s products.

Lamello is renowned for manufacturing a joining system that saves time and money with outstanding results, and is highly regarded amongst cabinetmakers, specialist joiners and kitchen fitters. Marco’s main focus will be on demonstrating

wood joining using the incredible Lamello P-system which includes use of the Zeta P-2 biscuit jointer together with connectors Clamex-P, Tenso-P and Divario-P. The system can be applied to kitchen fitting, bespoke interiors and any situation that requires the joining of panels and installing worktops, cabinets, shelving and more. The P-system is fast, precise and quick to set up with the final fittings either visible or barely visible. Where, when and what time Marco will be demonstrating at some of the Axminster stores: Thursday 8th June 10am-4pm – Valegate Retail Park, Cardiff CF5 6EH Friday 9th June 10am-4pm – Cressex Business Park, High Wycombe HP12 3FF Wednesday 14th June 10am-4pm – Gateway 49 Trade Park, Warrington WA2 8NT Thursday 15th June 10am-4pm – Bermuda Trade Park, Nuneaton CV10 7RA Friday 16th June 8am-1pm – The Trafalgar Way, Axminster EX13 5SN. Cabineo, the connector of the future – simple, fast and strong The NEW Cabineo time-saving furniture connector requires no edge drilling. Machining occurs solely on the surface and the connector is used with all types of CNC machines. Cabineo offers more efficient production, faster installation and a higher clamping force than the traditional cam and dowel fitting. The Cabineo fitting is inserted into the routed shape on the surface. The pre-installed screw inside the fitting is then secured into the 5mm drill hole. The speed of a cordless drill joins the workpieces together quickly and powerfully. Cover caps in various colours can be clipped onto the Cabineo within seconds.

New engraving service available at Probox Drawers Probox, based near Buckingham, is a leading UK supplier of solid timber drawer boxes. Probox has installed a CNC machine which allows clients to have engraved artwork on their drawer boxes such as branding or a logo. Other creative options for engraving could be labelling drawer fronts or box lids with words such as Bread or Cutlery in kitchens or Socks etc for bedroom furniture. Daniel Wells, director at Probox drawers, comments: “Engraving is a sought-after service with our clients, allowing them to apply branding to drawers and add a point of difference.” Probox installed the CNC engraving machine in a new warehouse built for extra storage and to allow for this extra process. Daniel adds: “End customers like to have the kitchen supplier’s name on the side of their drawer boxes. It can be seen as a mark of quality, showing that the kitchen was handcrafted. It is also great advertising for the kitchen company, promoting more word of mouth leads as friends and family see the name.” From artwork supplied as a solid black vector file, Probox can engrave a variety of designs from solid logos to intricate patterns. The computerised CNC engraving machine offers the precise positioning of engraved artwork, allowing large batches of drawer boxes to be produced with complete uniformity. The depth of the engraving can be varied within a design as desired. A popular finish is the main logo with a deeper engrave and smaller additional text with a finer effect. 01280 825776 proboxdrawers.co.uk

New online visualiser showcases countless worktop combinations Laminate and wood panel manufacturer, Egger, has launched an online visualiser to help kitchen manufacturers and retailers explore the potential of what is now Europe’s largest range of coordinating worktops and décor panels. With the launch of the 2017 Egger Decorative Collection, there are 6460 possible combinations of worktops and frontals and Egger is keen for customers to get the maximum benefit from what is available. The new Egger worktops visualiser is free to use, and allows customers to create their dream kitchen in minutes. It enables users to view countless combinations of worktops, splashbacks and upstands and explore how they work with doors, shelving and drawer fronts. “As the decors are instantly applied to room sets, it’s a quick and easy way for you to create the type of look you want,” said Elliott Fairlie, Egger UK’s head of décor development. After navigating to www.egger.com/ worktopsvisualiser, users can select from a range of room sets. Clicking on various elements brings up a chart of available decors that can also be viewed full size. Once the main elements of the new design have been selected, plinths and flooring can be dropped into place – and more than 2,700 colours of paint help to bring the ‘virtual room’ to life.

“The worktops visualiser even has a ‘compare’ feature that allows you to set two different decor combinations side by side with a slider allowing you to move seamlessly between the two and decide which you prefer. “This feature will instantly speed up the process of deciding which decors are your favourites and which decors just don’t work together. Once the room set is complete, you can save or print the design you have created or share with colleagues or customers via email for their comments,” continued Elliot Fairlie.

Egger’s newly-launched decorative collection for the UK and Ireland furniture manufacturing sector is not just its biggest-ever, but also showcases the company’s unique ability to match its MFC, MDF, melamine and complementary products. Central to the new décor collection is a range of ever-more-realistic, deep-textured surface decors for furniture makers. This innovative approach is also demonstrated in its worktop range – where it was the first wood-based panel manufacturer to offer synchronised pore worktops. egger.com

Weatherfast turns up the heat Weatherfast turns waste wooden pallets into free factory heating with help from Wood Waste Technology. A manufacturing company will no longer have heating and waste disposal bills going through the roof since buying a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Weatherfast manufactures and supplies a wide range of high-performance Fatra PVC membrane steel in sheet or coil form for use in the roofing industry. Set up five years ago, the business is run from its 8000m2 factory in Great Barr, Birmingham. The directors at Weatherfast started to research the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater once they realised the business was spending around £500 a month to heat the factory during the winter, and about £300 a month to have its wood waste, including redundant wooden pallets and packaging, removed. Director Orry White explains: “We soon realised that investing in a wood waste heater would pay back really quickly, as we could burn the waste wooden pallets to provide free factory heating – saving the business around £800 a month.” Orry searched the internet for wood waste heater manufacturers and contacted Kurt Cockroft, managing director at Wood Waste Technology, who arranged for Orry and the team to go and visit a neighbouring company

F&JP_284pre.indd 86

that had already invested in one of Wood Waste Technology’s biomass systems. Following more information and a site survey, the team at Weatherfast purchased a WT15 towards the end of last year, and Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed it a few weeks before Christmas. Orry says: “We’ve been really impressed with the wood waste heater so far. We have to walk through another factory to enter ours, and the difference in temperature is really noticeable, as you leave their cold factory and walk into our lovely warm area. I can highly recommend Wood Waste Technology’s products and service – we’ve definitely made the right decision with this investment.” Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted to have customers who are so pleased with their wood waste heaters and boilers that they’re happy for other businesses to visit them to see our biomass technology working in situ. We’re really proud of the good reputation our heaters have developed, as every wood waste heater we’ve ever sold is still in operation today, and it’s been a pleasure helping Weatherfast save money on its business expenses.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey,

design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new wood waste heaters and boilers, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com
