Focus on the skills gap Having done the rounds of some of the Open House events for the machinery side of the business last month, it was heartening to see such good turnouts and strong support from across the industry sectors: from kitchen manufacturers to timber-frame house builders, from joinery firms to panel suppliers, the breadth of visitors seemed to match the variety of equipment being shown very well. There are more events planned for the coming weeks which the team will be travelling to – a full round-up will follow in the November issue. A key issue which cropped up repeatedly at all of the open house events I attended is the skills shortage our industry is grappling with. For some time it has been apparent that younger people are not coming into the industry in the numbers they were. And we’re not necessarily just talking about on the furniture and joinery manufacturing side of things, the same problem exists for many of the suppliers who often have to go all sorts of lengths to find people who are motivated and skilled enough to take on tasks such as engineering, design and manufacturing.

which is now just 12 months away. As things stand, the picture seems very rosy for Montgomery to deliver another fantastic event. It is also heartening to see that at the show continues to focus on apprenticeships and education within the furniture manufacturing industry. Once again, the team is putting on the W Challenge at the show to help focus on apprenticeships. The skills gap is undoubtedly one of the biggest issues facing our industry and I would welcome readers’ input regarding this, and I will commit the magazine’s influence to highlight all credible ventures to help address the issue – clearly, it’s in all our interests to encourage the next generation of technicians and manufacturers. Elsewhere in this issue, we look at surfacing, KBB fittings, power tools and decorative panels. Plus there are updates and installations articles featuring a variety of companies who are investing for a more efficient and productive future. I hope you enjoy the issue, but as always, there’s so much more online at www.furnitureproduction.net.

There are a few companies actively working with various education bodies and establishments to create bespoke programmes to help develop the type of people our industry so badly needs. Bravo to them, yes, but it is indicative of a considerable long-term problem which has to be addressed steadily and strategically over the coming years. In this issue, we hear from Lisa Campagnola, the event director of the W Exhibition and Elements – an event

Lectra award The Industry of the Future Alliance (AIF) has awarded Lectra with its Showcase for the Industry of the Future label for demonstrating the criteria exemplarity, innovation and commitment.

This certification is given to companies that have concretely developed a ground-breaking project to organise its production by leveraging the potential of digital. The AIF bestowed Lectra with this distinction for its competitiveness concerning cost, quality and delivery times, all obtained thanks to a lean approach and reflection around the design of its products. Furthermore, Lectra received the certification for its competitiveness regarding value, achieved thanks to mastering customer use from which new associated services have flowed.

BFM joins FIRA The British Furniture Manufacturers has joined the Furniture Industry Research Association. The new membership will allow the BFM to provide an even higher level of technical support to its members and open up new opportunities for both organisations to work together.

FIRA’s UKAS testing accreditation expanded FIRA International has seen its United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) testing accreditation expanded following a scheduled four year re-assessment.

John Smith retires from JJ Smith after 55 years and beautiful design results. Booking details for both events will be available shortly on the BWF website at www.bwf.org.uk/news/ events. Visitors to the CTI stand will also be able to find information on what BWF has been doing for the UK joinery industry and the benefits of joining BWF for joinery manufacturers and suppliers to the industry. BFM assists development of ICT skills within furniture sector The British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) is part of a pan-European push to bridge the skills gap in the wood and furniture industries. IN4WOOD is a project aimed to design and develop training content, to provide production managers and CEOs with an overview of the specific needs of the sector regarding information, communication and key enabling technologies. With Europe believed to be on the brink of its fourth industrial revolution – known as Industry 4.0 – the age of technology has the potential to transform the way goods are manufactured. With that in mind, the

Steve Moore, BFM’s director consultant services, and representative on the IN4WOOD project

project will undertake a deep analysis of the furniture sector, looking at the current level of knowledge and skills to define the needs of the market. It will also provide a training path guide for smart furniture factories of the future, promote better anticipation of information and communication technology skills,

design and develop a joint curriculum and deliver it using an e-learning platform. Says Steve Moore, BFM’s director consultant services, and representative on the project: “The BFM is in an alliance with 12 European project partners from the furniture, wood and education sectors to help equip those working within the industry with the right skills for the digitalisation of their factories. “The project will analyse the new digital benefits, explore ways in which organisations will need to invest in people, equipment, and ICT in relation to market requirements.” in4wood.eu

Well-known industry figure John Smith has recently stepped down from his role as company director and chairman of JJ Smith after 55 years of unbroken service.

Commenting on the many industry changes during his time, John recalls how UK machinery manufacturers like Wadkin, Robinson and Rye originally dominated the supply chain in the 50s and 60s. Then moving in to the 70s and 80s there was the emergence of the European manufacturing heavyweights SCM, Homag and Biesse, firstly selling through single company agents, such as JJ Smith and latterly establishing their own UK-based distribution networks. However there was, and still is, room for the independent niche machinery suppliers and as a result JJ Smith continues to successfully promote and sell its equipment in the marketplace, now with the fourth generation family members on board who John is sure will continue to steer the company in the right direction for many years to come. So, yes, as John recalls, while there has been a sea change in technology, the basic facets of working with wood, ie, sawing, planing, shaping, drilling and sanding, remain the same after all these years … its just quicker!

Business interruption insurance can protect businesses against the impact of supply chain threats to manufacturers

Mitigating supply chain risk

The supply chains of manufacturers form a vital part of the global economy. Increasingly complex and often worldwide, these supply chains provide manufacturing firms in the UK and abroad with components which are vital to the successful production of their end products. However with more complexity in the supply chains of manufacturers comes a mounting array of risks and an increasing range of environments in which these risks are present. Political instability in the Middle East, earthquakes in Japan, economic problems in China, for example – all have the potential to derail the operations of any manufacturer whose supply chain crosses those regions, rendering production impossible. Yet many manufacturers are still not covering themselves adequately against the full range of risks – neither protecting themselves sufficiently with business interruption insurance or future-proofing themselves against unforeseen circumstances with continuity planning. Natural disasters like Japan’s 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami forced the closure of some of the world’s biggest parts plants overnight. Recent political instability

in Russia and the Middle East also highlights the vulnerabilities facing these vital trade arteries. Yet manufacturing customers may still be hesitant when it comes to investing in risk management around their supply chains – not only for tier one suppliers but further up the chain, too. Today’s complex supply chains face a wide number of risks and they are evolving and changing all the time, with cyber threats and climate change adding extra threat.

One option for covering against supply chain risks is to keep inventories of parts and components high, yet many manufacturers are wary of this approach as it requires significant storage costs and capital expenditure which can impact on already tight margins. The result of not keeping high inventories is that manufacturers are even more susceptible to supply chain risks and should therefore take steps to cover

against them. Kerry London has been broking insurance policies for manufacturers since the early days of the company’s 30 years in business. In the current climate, Dean Calaz, managing director of the Corporate, Commercial and Private Clients Division of business insurance specialist, Kerry London, recommends a dual approach to making businesses resilient to supply chain risks. “Firstly, comprehensive business interruption insurance – providing financial cover which, with the help of a good broker, can protect you against the impact of being hit by situations beyond your control. “We also recommend Business Continuity Planning (BCP) as an increasingly important means of continuing trading – not only making your business resilient to risk and protecting your employees but potentially offering competitive advantage over rival companies whose supply chains may be similarly affected. “Resilience is the key here – resisting threats through planning how to avoid or contain them and recovering from instances by stabilising and returning to normal as quickly as possible,” concludes Dean. 01923 211 290 kerrylondon.co.uk

Formica Group, the world’s largest manufacturer of high pressure laminate (HPL), has invested in a Kimla CNC router as part the expansion of the group’s fabrication support unit (FSU) in North Shields.

Formica opts for Kimla CNC router Kimla CNC router supplied and installed by Daltons Wadkin at Formica Group

Launched in 1955, Formica’s FSU is still expanding and recent investment with Daltons Wadkin has created a stateof-the-art facility for testing, trouble shooting and training on Formica’s extensive range of innovative surfacing products. FSU manager, Paul Sisterson, has been at Formica Group Europe for almost 20 years and headed up the CNC project. Paul has helped countless customers around Europe with training and product support, continually pushing the boundaries with Formica laminate. “The Kimla gives us the ability to be on the same level as our customers who purchase and use our products on similar CNC machines. We needed a versatile and reliable machine that would fit within our workshop space,” comments Paul. “Daltons Wadkin took time to understand our requirements and carried out demonstrations at existing Kimla customers and in

their showroom. We could buy with confidence knowing that it was the right machine for the job.” Daltons Wadkin has seen considerable growth in Kimla CNC router sales. Company director, Alex Dalton, worked closely with Formica on the project. “Formica Group is typical of the type of customer we see investing in Kimla CNC machines, demanding well-engineered technology that is reliable and easy to use. Kimla delivers on every level. We have expanded our service team with dedicated CNC engineers and technical support staff to give customers immediate response when required.” The Kimla BPF2131 CNC router supplied included a working area of 2100 x 3100mm to accommodate Formica’s largest standard panel size, a 9kW router head, automatic tool-changer and PC-CAM software suite including CAD, CAM and nesting functions. “This is a very popular specification for us,”

comments Alex. “Crucially the Kimla has a compact working footprint to deliver large working capacities without taking valuable workshop space. The software is powerful, but easy to use and can integrate into existing work flows if customers are already using third party CAD/CAM products such as Cabinet Vision, AutoCAD or Solid Works etc.” Equipped with Dynamic Vector Analysis Control (DVA), the Kimla processes up to 15,000 lines of NC code per second for smooth regulation of the feed speed. This, in combination with Kimla’s exceptional build quality, delivers high performance results not only on wood-based products, but also on more unforgiving materials such as laminates, plastics, composites and non-ferrous metals. FSU is now in a position to have end-user fabricators of all levels attend training courses. One-day beginner courses look at various Formica products

including HPL, ColorCore, DecoMetal and Formica Ligna focusing on handling, storage, fabrication, substrates, adhesives and maintenance. Advanced two day courses are aimed at more experienced fabricators covering preconditioning, fire performance and troubleshooting. The addition of the Kimla CNC enables Paul and his team to replicate customers’ workshop conditions. “We can now talk to fabricators on issues they may have when using our products,” says Paul. “It helps us with fault-finding and problem-solving. It also gives us the ability to produce repetitive works such as sample requirements which go out to customers on a daily basis. Using the Kimla we have been able to produce unique art work projects which are now on display in our new European HQ at North Shields. It has opened our eyes to how we can use our products for future projects.” daltonswadkin.com

Shropshire based Retail Furniture is a well-respected specialist manufacturer of bespoke shopfitting solutions and display stands to the retail, leisure, health, education, finance and commercial sectors.

Retail Furniture puts its faith in Homag machinery and software Established in 2002, its reputation is based on excellence, reliability and flexibility which has led to a wide range of trade and blue-chip clients employing its services. Managing director, Neil Enefer explains the company’s philosophy, “I’ve always been a believer in ‘you get what you pay for’ and so when we set up the business we made a decision to invest in the best technology we could afford. Over the last 30 years or so I’ve dealt with all the major woodworking machinery companies and not one of them can hold a candle to Homag.” The complete package “In my opinion, Homag is the only company that offers the complete package. From the knowledge,

expertise and honesty of their area sales managers to the build quality of the machinery, the training offered, the back-up services and the company’s drive to continually innovate, they are exceptional. No other company looks after you like Homag. “Our relationship with them is a true partnership. Over the years a deep trust has developed between us and so when Jon Lawman, our Homag UK area manager, suggests a solution, we listen. That is how we came to invest in the automatic storage and retrieval system, the TLF 211.” Huge efficiencies from the Homag Automation TLF 211 storage system “For a couple of years, Jon had been telling us about how

beneficial the automated storage system would be for our business. As we expanded, the headaches of running our own warehouse for board stock just got bigger and bigger. So, in 2015 we decided to invest in Homag’s TLF 211 storage system and it is hard to underestimate the benefits it has brought to the business. “Before installing the storage system we had several storemen manually handling the board stock and it was just getting harder to manage efficiently. Jon arranged for us to go and see a couple of TLF 211 installations and when we spoke to the directors of those companies it was clear that we had to make the investment. “They gave us nothing but glowing reports on the efficiencies the system delivered to their

businesses. They also highlighted the virtual elimination of damaged boards which was an escalating problem for us because of the manual handling aspect of our process. “Since it was commissioned in March 2016, it’s been a revelation. Before, with two guys on 12 hour shifts, we were struggling to keep up with our beam sawing capacity; now, we’ve got one guy on an eight hour shift who’s more than keeping up with the saw and our five CNCs. To be honest, the system never ceases to amaze me with the efficiencies it delivers and, of course, damaged stock is now a thing of the past. “In peak periods, such as the runup to Christmas, it’s an absolute godsend if I’m honest with you, it really is. HPP 300 beam saw integrates with storage system to increase capacity

we also invested in a new Homag HPP 300 beam saw. This integrates perfectly with the storage system and thanks to its quality and accuracy has also helped us to increase our capacity.” New Homag BMG 312 gives Retail Furniture the edge “Our most recent investment has been a five-axis CNC machine. In 2002, we purchased a Homag BAZ 41 CNC with an edge banding capability built-in. As good a machine as it was, it was getting long in the tooth and starting to show signs of being a potential weak link in our production. “Consequently, we decided to upgrade that machine, partexchanging it for the new Homag BMG 312 which has the built-in edge banding facility and a five-axis head. “This head was necessary for a specialist product that we make, polyurethane edging, which is an

injection moulding around table tops. The manufacturing process requires some rebating on the underside of the panel which a standard machine can’t do in one pass, so we needed the five-axis head. “Previously, on our flatbed CNC, we had to turn the panels over to machine both sides whereas now we can do the processing on both sides without having to turn the panel over. The result is the accuracy levels are now 100%, making this machine worth its weight in gold.” The right price for the right product “The Homag product really is the Rolls-Royce of woodworking machinery. Yes, the initial outlay may be more than for other machines, but at the end of the day the life-time value is exceptional.

“For us, downtime is virtually a thing of the past; the Homag machines are so reliable. In 30 years I’ve never come across a better product, so I don’t mind paying the extra money. In the long run, it’s a more economical way of looking at it. “Another benefit is the Homag software. We use woodWOP, which integrates really well with Alphacam, and MagiCut which is great for controlling the beam saw. Both are easy to use and enable us to get the very best out of the equipment. “The training Homag provide is another aspect they do really well and that enables us to maximise the productivity of the machines very quickly. When the Homag engineers have finished with our operators they are well and truly up to speed. “All of these benefits have been reflected in our bottom line which

has increased at least 4% with the introduction of the storage system alone. The key benefits we get from our investment with Homag are the efficiency savings, the backup support and the reduction in damaged materials. “Additionally, we’ve been able to win bigger, more complex contracts; when customers visit our facility they are truly impressed with the machine shop and it gives them real confidence in our ability to deliver. The TLF 211 has probably already paid for itself in the last 18 months and the other machines will do so in two or three years at most,” concludes a very satisfied Neil Enefer. Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has installed a complete extraction system for fit-out specialist, Cardinal Group, at the company’s newly refurbished manufacturing base in Laisterdyke, Bradford.

DCS’ eminence saves Cardinal energy Cardinal has family business origins dating back over a century, and is now a thriving company with a workforce steadily approaching 200 in number. With its core business in the retail sector, Cardinal has earned a prestigious client list of top high street names, but re-locating its manufacturing facility and headquarters, along with investments in new plant and machinery, is providing opportunities to develop into new markets. Dust Control Systems has looked after the company’s dust extraction requirements for over 20 years, and sales director Melvyn Bathgate, commenting on the contract to supply and install extraction plant at the new premises, says: “In our business it’s not often we have such a blank canvas to work with – Cardinal now has around 120,000ft2 of manufacturing space and, being involved from the start, we were able to offer some guidance on workshop layout and machine positioning to ensure maximum efficiency from the extraction system design.” The overall layout of the manufacturing areas is extremely neat, providing a natural workflow and generous space for queuing

jobs and movement of product between different machining operations. As is the case for most fit-out companies, Cardinal manufactures a tremendous variety of products, utilising a multiplicity of machines; from classic spindle moulders and band saws, through to modern high-tech CNC machining centres. This diverse production requirement means that many machines are often used for short periods of time, and at irregular intervals. In a traditional workshop environment, the extraction system operates at full power, throughout the manufacturing day, even if some machines are idle but, at Cardinal, DCS have installed an energy-saving Ecogate extraction system. With Ecogate, optimum extraction is automatically provided, for every individual production machine, but only when machines are being used. DCS has installed FastClip ductwork throughout the factory and the ducting to each machine incorporates a motorised Ecogate damper which is activated when the machine comes online. The dampers open to allow extraction, and then close automatically when machines are powered down –

the Ecogate system continuously adjusts extraction fan speed, in real time, to match machine usage. “The potential for power saving is obvious”, says Melvyn. “Installing an Ecogate system can achieve an average power saving of over 60% Energy-saving Ecogate greenBOX 12 controllers automatically open and close motorised gates as individual machines come on or off line

when compared to a system with fans running all day at fixed speed.” Cardinal’s system is controlled by two Ecogate greenBOX 12 units, with each greenBOX capable of autonomously controlling extraction for up to 12 different machines – DCS engineers conservatively estimate that energy bills will be 50% lower than they would have been with a fixed speed system. Providing filtration for all the production machines is an ATEXcertified, Schuko ECOVAR VALIDUS modular chain filter, with an air volume capacity of 47,000m3/ hr provided by a flow-optimised cascade system of three 22kW fans. Dust-laden air extracted from the factory is drawn through antistatic, polyester needle-felt tubular filter bags – dust is continuously removed from the filter media by pulsed jets of compressed air, and a pneumatic-mechanical shaking system provides secondary cleaning. The waste dust falls into the lower hopper section of the unit where the chain conveyor maintains a

Production staff at Cardinal are understandably delighted with the new spacious, dust-free workspace

The installation also includes two ATEX-approved CARZ backpressure flap valves; one in each of the two main ducts. In the unlikely event of a dust explosion,

the valves prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling from the filter, back along ductwork, and into the factory. DCS have also provided additional fire

Cubby Construction is a multi-disciplined business operating throughout the UK that has been a leading name in construction, civil engineering, joinery manufacture and installation, and sustainable housing since 1968.

Cubby’s delight with Brilliant sanding solution Last year the joinery workshop purchased a new Kündig Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L sander, delivered in October 2016. Speaking nine months later, workshop foreman, Mariusz Pietruszka, expressed his delight with the performance the sander is providing. Cubby has a long-standing reputation for the manufacture of high quality domestic and commercial joinery for fitting by the client’s appointed contractor, or by Cubby craftsmen themselves. Working in both hard and soft woods, as well as modern composites and fibreboards, the company makes a wide variety of specially-designed, bespoke or short run items. Products range from specialist one-offs, staircases, doors and windows, panelling, fitted furniture and premium quality kitchens. See www.cubby.co.uk for more information. Mariusz explains that the previous sander was 20 years old, and had come to the end of its working life: “The old sander was causing more damage than sanding, so we decided to replace it with something that was flexible for veneer work, windows, doors, lacquer denibbing and denibbing for spray finishing. “I did my research, and found out that Kündig would be the right machine for us. It has some of the best reviews on the market, I also looked to see how many secondhand Kündig machines were available and was only able to find

“Our previous experience had shown that sanding along the grain leaves lines, which needed to be sorted out with orbital sanding: with our new Kündig Brilliant 2 that problem has now disappeared” one which was over 20 years old. I took this to be a good indicator of the Kündig’s quality and people buying them to keep. Mariusz listed the advantages of the Kündig sander which has saved Cubby at least 20 hours/week of labour compared to the old sander. “It has also reduced our dependency on hand-held sanders which has also saved time and the issues associated with HAVS. Now 95% of work goes through the Kündig. “It is user friendly, and it also has a fixed bed, which is very handy for our work. The extension table is

also advantageous when working with long items to keep them level and maintaining the finish quality. “It also has the shear head, which is very appealing, because you don’t get parallel lines on the workpiece. Our previous experience had shown that sanding along the grain leaves lines, which needed to be sorted out with orbital sanding: that problem has now disappeared. The Kündig definitely improves the quality of the finished surface.” The sander Cubby selected has two heads and a working width of 1350mm. It has been configured for lacquer sanding, although,

as Mariusz explains: “We haven’t tried high gloss yet, but we use a lot of the 240 and 320 grit for fine sanding, and the process works well. “We are very happy with the finish. We have had the sander for almost nine months, and we haven’t had any complaints from the joiners on the shop floor as the Kündig does what it says it can do. “The sander is used for everything. We specialise in bespoke joinery and furniture, so use it for a variety of applications: yesterday we were sanding windows, tomorrow it will be sanding doors and possibly denibbing lacquer, Monday it will be doing kitchen doors. The Kündig sander is a multi-task machine, and that is why Cubby have chosen it.” Asked if Cubby would recommend the sander, Mariusz replies: “Highly.” The Brilliant is the mid-range Kündig wide-belt sander. It can be supplied in a variety of configurations. Kündig sanders are manufactured to the highest standards within Europe, and new sanders come fitted as standard with an energy-saving mode: if no workpiece has been sanded for a given period of time, the energy-saving function kicks in. The company estimates that this can save a workshop about 10-15% of the electricity that would otherwise have been used. 0845 833 0565 sales@kundig.co.uk kundig.co.uk

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

Having already benefitted from one programmable optimising and defecting crosscut saw, Pluss has invested in a second Salvador, this time a SuperAngle 600 with drilling head for bed frame component manufacturing.

Another big Pluss for Daltons Wadkin and Salvador Over the past 45 years Pluss has helped thousands of people with disabilities and other disadvantages move into employment. The awardwinning social enterprise has a turnover of over £19m and is recognised as one of the leading national disability employment specialists in the UK. The woodworking arm of the company, based in Barnstaple, produces high quality bed frames and components for luxury bed manufacturer ViSpring. The Salvador SuperAngle 600 crosscut joins the existing SuperPush 200, reducing processing times and freeing up a bottle neck in production. Machine technician for Pluss, Kevin Williams, was involved in both Salvador installations. “Our old processes were very labour intensive and offered no chance of optimising the material. That, coupled with a second drilling process meant that production of key components was slow, inaccurate and inefficient. I already knew the potential savings in waste a Salvador could bring. “The SuperAngle 600 with drilling has now taken over from two separate machines. It’s only been installed for a few weeks but we are already matching our initial target of 2500 finished components per week with plenty of capacity to spare. Crucially material wastage has been reduced from nearly 30% down to around 10%.” New for 2017, the Salvador SuperAngle crosscut saw is now available with a drilling head that can perform boring and countersinking operations in combination with straight and angled crosscutting. Combining these two, traditionally separate processes into one operation increases efficiency with huge savings in labour, reduced material wastage and machining time while guaranteeing accuracy. The five spindle drilling unit is controlled through Salvador’s new software. A simple and intuitive operator interface allows the machine to operate in one of four

Salvador SuperAngle 600 with drilling in operation at Pluss Below: Simultaneous angle cutting and drilling operations

modes; full cutting list optimisation with or without defecting, fixed cutting, sequential fixed cutting and cut to mark. The powerful optimisation software is continually scanning the infeed material, considering material length, head and tail angle and any defects in order to reduce waste and maximise yield. Another advantage of the new software is the addition of three new ‘intelligent’ functions providing valuable operator and management data. S-Money generates statistical information and manufacturing costs, reporting on the overall productivity of the machine, separate cutting lists, individual operators or different types of material. S-Help provides

the operator with real time machine diagnosis with infographics accompanying error message. S-Excel allows cutting lists to be programmed remotely, away from the machine, taking data from third party production management software or simply from an Excel spreadsheet. David Jenkins, enterprise manager at Pluss, has been working Daltons Wadkin sales director Andy Walsh on the Salvador project. “The whole process has gone very well,” comments David. “Our company was made to feel special with the service received when investigating the machine. The Salvador met all of our requirements, the installation team were professional and dealt

with all of our questions. Since then we have received regular communication to check on our progress and have arranged for an annual service contract with Daltons Wadkin. “The machine is very safe, robust, accurate and delivers the production efficiency we as a company wanted to achieve. Its ease of use allows us to meet our vision which is to allow people of all abilities to be inspired to achieve a career,” says David. “We are now in discussions with Daltons Wadkin for other machines based upon the service, reliability and functionality of delivering this project.” The SuperAngle 600 and SuperPush 200 can be seen operating alongside other equipment at the Daltons Wadkin in-house Wood & Panel Machinery Show, from the 3rd-5th October in Nottingham. Mighton Products partner Anker Stuy Verven (ASV) has been selected as supplier of the colour stains and lacquers for the new seating as part of a prestigious yearlong renovation of Westminster Abbey that was finally completed in June this year.

Mighton partner Anker Stuy gives seating a great finish in abbey renovation As part of the interior maintenance works that took place at the iconic London landmark 2200 wooden chairs, with the Westminster Abbey Arms embossed in to each of the backrests, were commissioned and have now become the new primary form of seating distributed throughout the building. The finish for these chairs carries a series of heavy demands and therefore required an exemplary quality lacquer capable of providing long lasting protection against candle wax, as well as tough resistance against scratches and abrasions. The two-component ASV lacquer that was eventually specified complies with the EN 71-3 standard, certifying it free from heavy metals and even suitable for use on children’s toys, as well as complying with both DIN 4102 B1 and DIN 68861 B1 standards,

which demonstrates its chemical resistance. However, it was not just the technical performance of this finish that was under high scrutiny but also its aesthetic appeal. Finding the right colour stain that could give the lacquer its desired hue proved to be a challenging process with eight individual shades of brown being developed from ASV’s HD LM Color stain before a selection was finally made. Emile Stuy, export manager at ASV, said: “The finished Abbey Chair has an aesthetically beautiful appearance through the bluntmolded finish, making it perfect for the architecture and ambience of the Abbey. Being part of the process that made these chairs a reality, alongside Leon Volk, owner of our Netherlands based dealer Oxid Coatings, gave us the rare opportunity to work on such a prestigious and challenging project.”

Mighton has been distributing Anker Stuy products to its specialist joinery customers throughout the UK since 2016 with next day delivery and a simple pricing structure which has seen a decidedly positive response. Since the completion of the Westminster Abbey project Mighton has also added the full range

of specialist timber treatments, including interior finishes, to its established range of paints and coatings that are finding increasing favour with joinery manufacturers. Mighton plans to also include the addition of paints and coatings for other, non-timber, applications in the near future. mightonproducts.com

It’s just happened again … Pfleiderer, Egger and FunderMax have almost simultaneously launched new collections onto the market. At one fell swoop more than 400 new board colours and décors have arrived. Edgings expert Ostermann has pored over the new collections, and lost no time in readying the edgings to match.

Ostermann, the edgings pioneer, with a keen awareness of current edging trends Ostermann has more than 20,000 pallet spaces of edgings at its fingertips warehoused in Bocholt in Germany which represents Europe’s largest furniture edgings range. At the same time, it’s full speed ahead with the work on the expansion of the logistics centre, which will see the number of storage bays doubled. And not before time – because the variety of edgings is continuously growing – not only in relation to colours and décors, but the different grades of gloss and surface properties too. Board manufacturers offering new worlds of colour All said, board manufacturers are constantly offering wider and wider ranges to the trade. With the three aforementioned collections, some 400 new colours and décors are arriving on the market at one fell swoop. To make it easier for their customers to choose, the board manufacturers are introducing their new collections by way of “worlds of colour” (Pfleiderer), “grids” (Egger) and “décor cards” (FunderMax). Ostermann has carefully examined the new collections, and lost no time in readying the edgings to match. What are the current edging trends? Based on the observations of Ostermann’s trend experts, the new collections are dominated by realistic-looking material reproductions, such as textile surfaces, various stone finishes, as well as rust and concrete looks. And the number of edgings to go with these designs is correspondingly large. In the uniform area, the largest range features grey, blue and green tones. Oak continues to dominate in the wood reproduction area, frequently also featuring light or grey shading.

Stamp is available in black and white and in 23, 33, 43 and 100 x 2mm sizes

Inspired by Stamp printing The décor of the new Stamp edging was inspired by the ancient technique of stamp printing. The result is a monochromatic and vibrant edging surface with a metallic shine that changes according to light patterns.

Ostermann is now delivering the new collection of edgings in black and white from a length of 1m. Stamp is an English word, meaning postage stamp or stamp print. And the décor of the new Ostermann edging collection is also inspired by the traditional stamping

technique. Here, uneven rectangles, intricately stamped and seeming to overlap, with minimal variation of colours and pearly shades, lie next to, and above, each another. The result is a graphic surface which changes its appearance according to light patterns.

As the market-leading manufacturer for woodworking machinery, Homag has dominated the edge banding market with its impressive array of automated technology. With Your Solution as the prime positioning statement, the company is focused on ensuring it provides a range of machinery for companies of all sizes.

Homag shapes the future in edge banding for SMEs Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag explains: “Homag’s range of edge banding solutions starts at entry level size, specifically designed for the smaller workshops, and leads up to industrial size equipment for the large manufacturing plants. “Over the years, Homag has developed a range of solutions to specifically help entry level manufacturers grow. The Homag KTD 720 and FTK 130 provide edge banding and trimming solutions for smaller companies. Working either separately or together, they not only reduce production times but also provide new manufacturing capabilities.” The Homag KTD 720 Optimat – eliminating hand edging Designed as a flexible edge banding solution, the capabilities of the KTD 720 extend further than just being able to efficiently glue a series of formed parts. Unlike the larger throughfeed edge bander models, the KTD 720 specialises in edging both shaped and straight workpieces between 10-55 mm in thickness. This makes the machine an ideal solution for all aspects of kitchen, bedroom and office furniture manufacturing. By handling shaped components, it can help small-to-medium-sized businesses speed up production by taking away the time consuming task of hand edging parts. In addition to shaped edge banding, the KTD 720 excels at processing lower quantities of small parts. This makes the edge bander an all-round solution for entry level and specific job manufacturing. The KTD 720 uses a Homag hot melt gluing system to apply glue directly on to the edging tape which is automatically fed from the coil towards the panel. As the edging arrives, the panel is guided around the machine’s pressure roller which follows the internal and external contours of the part. The coil cut-off device is either activated by foot pedal or, for serial production, by pre-selecting

the edge length through its digital length counter. The operator simply places the panel on the height spacers which are fixed on the working table, according to the shape of the panel. This removes the need for using templates and makes the machine quick and flexible to set up for both shaped and straight parts. With the addition of an intuitive 3.5 in touch display, operation has been made simple and quick. Homag FTK 130 Optimat – automated flush trimming of shaped parts In addition to the KTD 720, Homag has produced an entry level trimming machine also targeted at smaller manufacturers. Available as either a stand-alone machine or complementary to the KTD 720, Homag’s FTK 130 Optimat has been designed for the flush trimming of shaped and straight workpieces. This compact trimming machine is capable of both radius and chamfer trimming for thicknesses from 16-55 mm. Additionally, this efficient piece of equipment makes light work of jobs as it can trim both the external and internal radii on shaped parts. The FTK 130 is fully equipped as standard to cover the entire range of trimming on different workpieces.

A centric copywheel and a fine adjustable top and bottom tracing device ensure optimum accuracy and perfect trimming results. The machine makes automated trimming affordable for the smaller manufacturers. Both the KTD 720 and the FTK 130 can be fitted with the optional EK13 end snipping saw unit which enhances the process by cutting the tails of the edging off flush with the end of the panel. Simon Brooks concludes: “The Homag KTD 720 and FTK 130 are really valuable pieces of kit for

the entry level to medium-sized manufacturer. Both machines, either used individually or together, improve processes and remove the need for messy, time-consuming hand edging and trimming. Available on finance, these machines are a great step to growing with Homag as part of your expansion plans.” For more information or a demonstration of either the Homag KTD 720 or FTK 130, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK. 01332 856500 homag.com

They include kitchen, bedroom and study furniture manufacturer DC Interiors, based in Maltby in South Yorkshire. “Quality, service and flexibility are key to our success,” says DC cofounder David Silkstone, echoing the Czech edgings supplier’s ethos.“Customer expectations are high, as are ours – it goes without saying that we expect the same from our suppliers. “The Hranipex connection started when they began to supply our ABS edgebanding. At the time we didn’t know that they actually manufactured the edging themselves!” After purchasing a new edgebander, DC Interiors

experienced some issues with the glue it had always used. David says: “We phoned Hranipex and the following morning their MD Petr Zmatlo was in our workshop, sleeves rolled up, offering expert technical advice, testing and recommending the correct glue for our machine … since then, we’ve never looked back.” According to David, DC generally places its orders through the Hranipex e-shop, and the goods are delivered the next working day. “Their website makes matching easy,” he says, “as their range of edgings is vast – as is their collection of cleaners and contact adhesives, which we also now purchase.” This strong product offer is backed up with excellent customer

service, and it’s this combination of strengths which has persuaded DC to stick with Hranipex as its edgings supplier of choice. “If we do need to call them, we know that expert advice is always at hand,” explains David. “We chose Hranipex above other suppliers for many reasons – expert technical knowledge, professional yet friendly approach, quality of product – but above all it was for their reliability and quality of service, which is second to none.” With a continually growing sales and operations team, and a wealth of industry experience drawn from the UK and beyond, Hranipex is operating from its strongest platform to date – and it’s at your service. Creating more space and convenience while enhancing aesthetics is the designer’s ambition when it comes to kitchens and furniture. With this in mind, Hettich has published The Ideas Book – Smart furniture concepts.

Transforming cabinet design with imagination and technology Hettich’s book is based on the experience that technology really can transform cabinet design – it can both inspire and enable solutions which simply allow a space to work better and make storage volumes more accessible. The Ideas Book – Smart furniture concepts is available via the Ideas Gallery on Hettich’s website. It presents various typical scenarios in the home, from the kitchen and utility room to the bathroom and bedroom, and then illustrates the transformative possibilities of fitting technology when it is used with knowledge and imagination.

is ideal either for wall units or as a splash back which doubles as utensils storage, when everything needs to be hidden. SlideLine M, with soft closing and opening, can be used for wooden, aluminiumframed and glass doors, and is available in the UK. Also on the sliding theme is WingLine L where a pair of doors folds outwards mechanically to reveal storage space within. The intrusion into the room is far less than with a single hinged door for the same opening, so it is a really practical but attractive way to ensure easy movement around the kitchen or living space. The

Space challenge The motivation behind The Ideas Book stems from the fact that the creation of space is a growing issue, particularly for urban homeowners who have a relatively high income but have to sacrifice floor area for location. Sliding mechanisms has been an evolving theme for Hettich and a two-track SlideLine M for two-door scenarios is a case in point. The two-track version Ideas Book illustrates its use in both hallway and utility room settings. Thin doors Thin doors are another attractive option which fits the modern aesthetic which The Ideas Book targets. The thin-door version of Sensys combines Sensys functionality with thinner profile doors. It is now available in the UK. While a black version of Sensys is another exciting development which is in the pipeline. The Ideas Book proves that smart functionality can open up genuine opportunities to inspire customers hettich.com/uk

significant opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint by facilitating more efficient shipping and transportation options, as items can be shipped flat-packed and

assembled quickly on-site. OVVO has also recently launched a prototyping service, working with manufacturers directly to bring to life the benefits of the connection

system, in a product already existing in the manufacturers’ portfolio. An existing product is reengineered using the OVVO connection system so that the benefits brought to the product can be readily and easily compared with the existing product. This service not only allows manufacturers see OVVO in place in a product of their choosing, it also, for a relatively small cost, provides manufacturers a high level of confidence before investing in OVVO at scale. +353 42 9370070 sales@ovvotech.com ovvotech.com

Bürkle systems have proven successful in the field of high-quality surface finishing for many years. The high degree of flexibility of the Bürkle finishing systems and the tried and- tested roller coating and curtain coating machines facilitate numerous applications: UV base coats and top coats, water-based finishing systems, solvent or water-based staining products as well as oils and waxes can be processed a completely newly developed spray coating model range.

Bürkle’s newly developed high class spray coating range From the very outset, the two spray coating series ROBUSpro and ROBUSeco have been integrated into the Bürkle Group’s outstanding system expertise. Depending on the requirements, they can be enhanced with drying tunnels, UV units and fully-automatic loading and unloading systems. Optimum coating systems are therefore created from a single source. With its roller coating machine series, Bürkle has accumulated know-how over many years in the area of surface coating. Their tried-and-tested key features – precision engineering, reliability, ease of operation and ease of maintenance – were integrated into the specifications for the extension to the range. The scope, contents and areas of application of the new Bürkle modular system for spray coating are remarkable. The product range comprises various types Close up of the Robus Pro Rotation

of machines and equipment packages, tailored to the needs of the particular user. It is based on renowned and proven Bürkle technology. Worthy of note is the easymaintenance access to all control and supply units, as well as to the components that need maintenance. Completely new developments are also included in the spray coating series. All filter units are fitted with a quick-change system. Five filter levels result in perfect air purification and ideal air quality in the spray booth and ensure high quality results. Another guarantee of quality is the air routing system in the booth, newly developed by ventilation and airflow experts. The Bürkle development team placed particular importance on the paint recovery unit and the belt cleaning system. The new spray coating machines are suitable for all types of paint. The current working width is 1300mm, and

additional widths are in the planning phase or can be implemented on a customer-specific basis. To prevent the rear side from becoming stained, the conveyor belt has a particularly wide design. Up to six plus six spray guns can be used for applying the paint. Four out/three in paint circulation systems are possible as standard.

If additional colours are to be used integrated colour mixing systems are available. “Despite this wide range of equipment, the new modular spray coating system has even more to offer. A post-filtering unit, a singledirection conveyor belt system, smaller graduation of the intake scanner strip and other features tailored to the various market requirements are also available,” explains Liam Whelan, managing director of Bürkle’s UK and Ireland’s distributor, Membrane Pressing Services. “The new machines have been designed to be reliable, high quality, user-friendly and easy to maintain.” 0116 240 1795 mpsmachines.co.uk liam@mpsmachines.co.uk

Surfacing pioneer Senosan has unveiled some impressive new options for the furniture market: acrylic glass in matt and high gloss finish, new anti-fingerprint films with a hardcoat finish and very high chemical resistance, plus transparent hardcoat acrylic films and sheets.

Senosan launches three new surfaces The Austrian based manufacturing company Senosan, renowned experts in high gloss acrylic materials with hardcoat finishing, has recently launched impressive new products for furniture applications. The hardcoated material, Senosan TopX Acrylglass, is now available in eight colours with high gloss and also matt finish. There is also a vastly improved, new, solid matt surface with antifingerprint properties. All surfaces provide very high scratch- and abrasion properties and excellent performance in terms of chemical resistance. Additionally, there is a new clear and transparent acrylic film with hardcoat surface opening new opportunities in terms of decorated or screen printed finishes. All new films and sheets are aimed for use mainly in the kitchen, bathroom, furniture and shop fitting industries, where a brilliant appearance with a deep colour effect is important. Top technology and design with visual glass appearance Besides the very elegant and optical appearance – same as real glass – today’s high tech acrylic surfaces provide numerous advantages.General processing and daily use with real glass is full of challenges, like impact resistance, shock absorbance and intensive cleaning. High gloss acrylic surfaces, which are supplied with a protective PE film, are very easy to handle, not only in terms of weight, but also in terms of processing and lamination. Even installation and mounting of fixings, hinges and handles can easily be fitted on site. During handling and

transportation, the use of high gloss acrylic panels will result in less rejects and claims. The high quality lacquered acrylic glass from Senosan is impressive regarding colour brilliance, deep colour effect and a mirror-like gloss level. The co-extruded acrylic glass material combines the aesthetic look of glass with the easy processing and handling properties of the well known Senosan films. Eight colours with gloss and matt options Gloss Level of Senosan TopX Acryl Glass is stated with 90 GLU (gloss units) and a scratch resistance of 1.1 Newton acc. to IHD-W-466 class 1. Scott Williams from Rehau talks about how its Rauvisio Crystal Mirror surfacing and edgebanding is reflecting market demand for smart glass materials.

The fairest of them all Furniture with mirrored or reflective surfaces is highly desirable, bringing light and depth to even the smallest of spaces. For manufacturers, however, working with mirrored glass can have its limitations and what customers want cannot always be achieved with this unforgiving material. The good news is that there are now polymeric alternatives available to mirrored glass which are lighter, longer-lasting and you won’t see the difference. Rehau recently added Rauvisio Crystal Mirror to its exciting range of surfacing and edge banding products as a credible alternative to mirrored glass for fabricators and manufacturers. The idea was to open up opportunities in design and production by creating a

material that was aesthetically as beautiful as real glass yet had less of its limitations. Technically known as polymeric glass, Rehau’s Crystal Mirror is one of the most advanced mirror materials in the world. It consists of a 2mm clear PMMA acrylic layer with a transparent scratchresistant coating and a co-extruded colour layer with a 2mm matching balancing sheet. The Crystal Mirror material boasts all the same flexibility, durability and quality of Rehau’s Crystal range but has the flatness and true mirror reflection of real glass. Even from six inches away, most people would struggle to tell the difference in reflection between Crystal Mirror and a glass mirror. Visually there is very little difference but when we take a

“It’s easy to work with too. Crystal Mirror is 50% lighter than real glass and it can be processed with conventional woodworking tools, including circular saws, drills and routers. This means it can be fabricated with grooves, inlays, chamfering and even backlighting.”

closer look at its properties, Crystal Mirror really offers much more compared to real mirror glass. It is ten times more break resistant than real glass with superior durability, it has a symmetric structure for stability – meaning it won’t distort over time – and it’s also colour stable, so it won’t fade under prolonged exposure to UV. These properties help to improve the lifespan of the furniture it is used on and keeps it looking newer for longer. It’s easy to work with too. Crystal Mirror is 50% lighter than real glass and it can be processed with conventional woodworking tools, including circular saws, drills and routers. This means it can be fabricated with grooves, inlays, chamfering and even backlighting. It can even withstand uneven surfaces of up to 1.5mm over a 1.5m length before any visible distortion. Rehau Crystal Mirror is available as a 19mm composite material (MDF), a 4mm slim version or as individual sheet material (laminates and balancers), giving designers and fabricators more options when using this innovative material in their furniture design and production. The standard sheet size is 2.44 x 1.22m and comes with a matching mirror edge banding if required. When considering the preparation time required to fabricate and fit a real glass surface, Crystal

Mirror can certainly be a cheaper, quicker and easier product to work with. In fact, with Crystal Mirror, many manufacturers have found a reduction in costs by reducing rejects by up to 20 per cent, which all makes a difference to the bottom line. Like the rest of Rehau’s Crystal range, Crystal Mirror polymeric surfacing can be used for a variety of domestic and commercial

applications. As the surface is waterproof, it’s a great option for bathrooms, washrooms and shower rooms, especially as it has anti-fogging properties so it won’t steam up in the same way as a standard mirror. This feature is great for homes, but it’s also big news for hotels, as they can negate the need to install costly heated mirrors. Crystal Mirror is non-porous and has a hardcoat layer,

making it easy to clean and very suitable for kitchen furniture. The surfacing’s hardcoating is scratch and chemical resistant and is built to withstand the high-stress environment of the kitchen. And should the surface be damaged, there is no danger of splintering or sharp edges which could cause injury or contaminate food. In fact, the hygiene properties of Crystal Mirror make it suitable for

any room which has a requirement for the highest level of hygiene, such as in a healthcare setting. Other applications Crystal Mirror surfacing can be used for include the leisure industry, office furniture, retail display units, correctional facilities, hospitals or even motorhomes. The list is endless thanks to its design, hygiene, weight saving and safety properties. For furniture purists, perhaps

nothing will replace real glass, but for designers and fabricators looking to free their creativity and make without limitations, Rauvisio Crystal Mirror surfacing is a clear favourite. Crystal Mirror is a premium product and part of Rehau’s Rauvisio Crystal range, which includes 10 other timeless colours in matt and high gloss. rehau.uk/crystal

Redwood Innovations strongly supported by Hesse Lignal offers quality wood coatings with superior technical back up.

Brexit presents the UK furniture industry with a unique opportunity In 2015 the UK voted to leave the EU. Dust-free sanding – are we there yet? When working on a variety of surfaces, we know that the dust generated can contain harmful particles, which can and cannot be seen. Potentially, these can cause major health issues for employees including respiratory problems. To put this into perspective, laboratory tests have shown that without dust extraction, dust in the air per kilogram of sanded material is over 200 grams per kilogram, and dust on surrounding surfaces is almost 800 grams per kilogram, so the importance of dust-free cannot be understated. As a business, Mirka has been a dust-free innovator for over a decade. As part of its ongoing investment in its innovative product ranges, Mirka’s R&D team is constantly developing products that keep pace with the on-going evolution of the industry to meet the needs and requirements of the user and offer a dust-free haven for them to work in. Furniture & Joinery Production sat down with Chris Hill, technical sales, industrial, at Mirka, to talk about dust-free sanding and to find out if we are there yet.

How do different types of users achieve dust-free sanding today? The amount of dust produced varies from job to job, so each user will look to achieve dust-free sanding and a dust-free work environment through a variety

of tools and abrasives that are applicable for use on the products and surfaces that are being worked on. This need for dust-free has led to users choosing net abrasive systems such as Abranet to enable the efficient extraction of both small and large dust particles that could potentially damage their work and health.

How important are dust extraction systems? They are extremely important but I have been asked some unusual questions from users about what they can use. However, no matter what they say, I always tell them that the efficiency of a dust-free abrasive will depend on the volume of air that is sucked through the machine. This is why Mirka introduced the new 1230 extractor that has a suction capacity of 4500 litres per minute, which, when in full flow, makes the process even more efficient. Also, it’s important to invest in a suitable mobile extraction system that can provide an effective solution for a cleaner work space, a reduction in prepping and tidying up at the end of the day, and the potential dust contamination of other tools and surfaces. However, the system is only as good as the user because it needs to be checked and serviced regularly so that it works at an optimum level. Therefore, it is important you choose the correct

extraction system for the job.

How does a dust-free environment affect the work being done? The first benefit is that with the dust being collected at the source it means less time is spent cleaning up, so overall there is a more efficient use of the workers’ time on the floor because time is money. The second is it removes particles from the work surface, which could potentially put larger scratches back into the surface that could lead to rework that will need to be done later on in the process, as users will not see the scratches until the product has been lacquered or painted.

How does dust-free assist the long-term health of the user? What we have seen is the growth in the use of the Abranet lineup across multiple sectors and applications. We have also noticed that users are now more clued up in terms of their own health and safety by ensuring they do not breath in dust particles when working. In addition to users being more knowledgeable and aware, we have experienced that businesses are now investing more time and effort into researching the tools they use in the workshop and our sales team receives many referral calls asking for information on products that companies have been recommended or may have seen at

one of the many events we attend throughout the year, which can protect the health of their workers.

How has the evolution of abrasives assisted the dust-free revolution? Abrasives are constantly changing as new processes are developed and Mirka is committed to remaining at the cutting edge of the industry. With this evolution, we have noticed that users are now asking for coarser grit abrasives that provide a dust-free environment. This led our R&D department to expand the range of Abranet products to include Abranet ACE HD, which now means users have access to a wide variety of grits, from coarse to fine, that can handle the jobs put in front of them, while offering the dust-free sanding experience that Mirka’s products have become synonymous with. mirka.com

Wood veneer remains a popular option offering a contemporary natural appeal with a minimal usage of wood. Lawcris stocks a fantastically diverse range of veneered products inspired by nature’s spectacular canvas.

Lawcris – where a little slice of nature can go a long way You don’t have to be in this industry to notice the increase of natural products in our interiors. Authentic timbers in combination with contemporary finishes is very much a strong and exciting trend. Dean Carroll, head of procurement at Lawcris, says: “Solid wood is not always an option and we are seeing more and more manufacturers searching for veneer options that give more flexibility to create that organic look they are after. This is where we can help. Amongst our diverse selection of veneered boards available for next day delivery are two very different veneer ranges, EASiWOOD and Trumatch, from one of the world’s leading companies in the veneer industry, Schorn & Groh.” It is easy to see why the EASiWOOD fleece-backed veneer is so popular. Combining the beauty of wood with the ease of use, it is very supple, has fantastic bending properties and is easier to use than other fleeced veneer.

“Authentic timbers in combination with contemporary finishes is a strong and exciting trend”

During the manufacturing process, the wood fibres are prefractured, yielding an especially flexible material composite. It can be cut with scissors or a craft knife and bonded to any dry substrate. The wood surface is also presanded and ready to be lacquered or oiled. There are 12 individual décors that can be ordered by the leaf in standard sizes of 2440 x 1220mm and a thickness of +/-0.6mm. The Trumatch range has the superior durability and handling of a high-pressure laminate. The jointed leaves of veneer are bonded against resin-impregnated papers under extreme pressure and temperature to create a semi-rigid 1mm thick sheet. Once bonded to a panel, it can be cut, edged and drilled using the same tools you would use for an ordinary HPL and due to the sturdiness of this product, it is widely used for interior decorative surfaces as wall and ceiling panels, as well as furniture applications used in hotels, shops and restaurants. lawcris.co.uk

Isaac Lord opened in 1892 as a traditional hardware shop to supply tools to the booming local furniture industry in High Wycombe. Now in its 125th year, Isaac Lord supplies the furniture and joinery industries – both locally and nationally – with kitchen fittings, cabinet fittings, hardware and tools.

Leading one-stop-shop delivers a full range of furniture and joinery supplies Furniture & Joinery Production recently spoke with Paul Mills, operations manager to see how Isaac Lord is facing the challenges and opportunities of the furniture and joinery sectors. “With a new website and sales reps providing national coverage, we are continuing our original ethos of supplying good quality products at fair prices. We have grown to become one of the leading independent suppliers of power tools, kitchen and cabinet fittings, ironmongery, abrasives, consumables and are a Landmark Retailer and Distributor of Blum Fittings. “We pride ourselves on the fact we are able to supply everything that a furniture and joinery shop could need in one place – other

than the wood!” Having been a leading national distributor of Blum fittings within the UK for over three decades, Isaac Lord has seen trends come and go, the latest of which is towards multidrawer larder units such as Blum’s impressive SpaceTower. “Blum’s SpaceTower can be ordered using one product code and delivered completely built and ready to install,” explains Paul, “additionally we have created our own range of single SKU Space Towers including sets comprised of Blum Legrabox and Antaro drawer kits. These are supplied flat packed, next day with discounts for bulk quantities. Our staff receive extensive training at Blum and are always on hand to make the configuration and ordering process

simple. The W14 and W16 woodworking shows at Birmingham’s NEC were a great success enabling Isaac Lord to meet many new and existing customers. “One of the challenges at these shows,” says Paul, “is to demonstrate to passers-by the extensive range of products that we have to offer. For the W18 show in October, we have doubled our stand size again and will be working closely with key suppliers including Blum, Mirka and Festool to reinforce the message that we are the one-stop-shop for kitchen, cabinet and furniture makers.” The Isaac Lord name is well known throughout the industry

and while Paul and his team are extremely proud of its heritage, the company is always looking to innovate. “We have invested heavily in our website and have a new catalogue showing our extensive range of products. We have over 25,000 products in stock for next day delivery and if we do not keep a product in stock from one of our key suppliers, our knowledgeable sales team and buyers will always try their best to source this for our customers as quickly as possible.” Everything considered, it’s a safe bet that Isaac Lord will remain one of the country’s premier suppliers for many years to come. isaaclord.co.uk

Jay Hounsell, a Herts-based carpenter and business owner, explains why he believes dust extraction should be the number one priority for everyone in the trade.

“Dust extraction needs to be a top priority for people in the trade” Jay Hounsell says: “I’ve been working in the carpentry industry for 20-odd years. My new company – The Hertfordshire Kitchen Company – has been going for two years and is successfully placing itself in the market for the supply and installation of quality domestic kitchens in Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas. “Working in an environment with dust extraction has massively changed my working practices. I have a lot of Festool kit as its tools and dust extractors work together really well. My work means I’m continually using routers, drills and circular saws with extractors – it makes the working environment more comfortable, cleaner and safer – I hate working in a mess! Feedback from our customers is good – on our Facebook page a number have mentioned how clean and tidy the job has been. “Dust extraction also helps with the longevity of the tools which therefore means less down-time.” Jay says that the health benefits have to be the number one reason for using Festool kit. He says: “I’ve been lucky to never have suffered from asthma or other breathing

problems. I believe this is partly attributable to the use of my Festool dust extractors and their excellent integration with their tools. “After years of working in carpentry I’m aware of the risks of working without a dust extractor and now use one whenever the tools allow. Kitchen fitting is indoor work so it’s a must as it’s not always practical or possible to do all the cutting outside. “I know people that don’t bother using them as they think they’re not necessary, are too expensive or they’re too big and bulky to wheel in and out of jobs. Some people will also use something unsuitable that’s not up to the job. I think it’s a bit of laziness from some people and lack of awareness about the dangers. “Dust extraction needs to be a top priority for people in the trade. I have two L Class extractors and, since we’ve developed our work with solid surface worktops that produce finer dust, I also have an M Class system now too. I use each one depending on the job. The system is what I like about Festool, the systainers enable easy organisation and all stack on top of each other which makes the

mobility of kit when you’re on the job so much easier.” Festool, the leading supplier of high-end power tools and accessories, including a range of dust extractors, has been speaking with business owners as part of its latest Breathe Easy campaign. The company has teamed up with the British Lung Foundation (BLF) to provide top quality cycling tops, available here: http://bit. ly/Festooltop, as a fundraising initiative and has asked business owners about their attitudes to dust extraction. According to the British Thoracic Society’s report The Burden of Lung Disease, men aged 20-64 employed in manual occupations are around 14 times more likely to die from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are nine times more likely to die from tuberculosis. Occupational lung diseases such as mesothelioma – caused by exposure to asbestos fibres – are increasing. Since 1992, mesothelioma deaths have

increased by 70% to 1862. Jon Burcham, marketing manager at Festool, says: “Festool has longbeen associated with our excellent dust extraction systems. “Due to heightened levels of understanding about the harm that dust can have on people’s lung health, we can see that dust extraction and the measures tradesmen need to take to protect their lungs will be something that will be legislated about in the near future.” Perfect for mobile use and assembly, the Festool range of safe and robust dust extractors are lightweight and compact, ideal to transport from job to job, saving time for tradespeople. Festool’s dust extractors are suitable for any job from low to high class dust, including general work to anything that is a known carcinogen including lead, cadmium and asbestos. festool.co.uk *1. Timber window beads and bars can be the cause of excessive material waste and time – post installation maintenance is also a regular problem.

Issues with timber window beads and bars

It is well known that the problems of timber window beads and bars are that they are not always straight – they can twist, and invariably contain knots. Time must be spent inspecting the profiles for defects before fabrication. Waste is inevitable before a cut is made and surface preparation for painting is very time consuming. Until now, joiners and window joiners have either made their own beads and bars, or bought them from stockists. Once straight and knot-free timber is selected, to form them on a lathe or CNC machine is labour intensive and time consuming – time is better spent on more profitable parts of the window. If sourcing from a stockist, lead times can be lengthy, putting pressure on cash tied up in

back-up stocks. A time-saving solution to these problems has been found through the development of wood composite materials. Extruded profiles in the exact shape of traditional window beads and bars are now available to joiners on a completely nationwide basis. An Oldham-based company has led the development of wood composites. Its Qwood profiles are

made using LEAN manufacturing processes that ensure profiles are available within days of when they are needed. Less waste through a reduction in lathe time or less back-up stock means better value and more bottom line returns. When delivered composite profiles are consistent and straight. They are not twisted and do not contain knots. They are cut and fixed just like ordinary timber,

and they are ready for painting without the need for any surface preparation. Both large and small joiners can save time and money when using wood composite profiles. In short, using Qwood window beads and bars overcomes all the issues associated with soft-wood timber profiles. Joiners can use Qwood – straight from the box! 0161 627 4222 quantumprofilesystems.com

When the rural enterprise team at Blenheim Palace realised money could be saved by investing in a wood waste heater, they contacted Wood Waste Technology.

Wood Waste Technology installs heater at Blenheim Palace Rural enterprise manager at Blenheim Palace, Ellie Exelby was impressed by the environmental and moneysaving potential of a wood waste heater. The team at Blenheim Palace is committed to reducing environmental impact and to working in a sustainable way by operating as a responsible business. Work done on building repairs and construction inevitably generates a substantial amount of waste wood. Instead of continuing to spend money on skips, the team realised that the business would be better investing in a more environmentally-friendly biomass solution. A wood waste burner would provide free waste wood disposal

plus free heating for some of the new buildings on the estate, such as the Forestry Department and the stables. As a result, a WT15 was ordered and installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Ellie explains: “As well as the savings on wood waste disposal, we’ve reduced our heating bills, as we no longer need to run the electric heaters in those areas. Instead, the wood waste heater now provides a lovely warm environment in the winter for the foresters plus the staff and horses in the stables.” Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says: “It’s an honour to have been asked to install one of our wood waste heaters at Blenheim Palace. As in this instance, our enquiries mostly

come through recommendation. We’re really proud of the excellent reputation of our heaters, as every wood waste heater ever sold is still in operation today. It’s been a pleasure helping such a prestigious establishment save money on its operating costs.“ Ellie continues: “The wood waste heater is great. It’s very cost-effective, and the foresters just need to add more wood when necessary to maintain the heat-flow. It’s been a popular and positive installation, providing energy and waste benefits to the Blenheim Palace estate. The team at Wood Waste Technology has been extremely helpful and always quick to respond to questions.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters and boilers, from small hand fired

units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design plus manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. It’s also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems to help increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk
