Comment A report from the CBI of 397 manufacturers says that manufacturing remained “well above long run averages” in the three months to February, despite weakening somewhat. Expectations for output price inflation remains above the historical average while stocks were considered to be above adequate levels, but below the long-run average. The CBI expects similarly John Legg Editorial director subdued growth to persist. However, demand in the manufacturing sector should continue to be buoyed by the lower pound and strong global economy. Perhaps offering more detail for our sector, a new report by the British Furniture Manufacturers trade association says that British exports are climbing, up by nearly 20% on 2017. In addition, it also states that imports have also risen, which widens the trade gap from £4.3b to £4.6b. Another challenge for furniture and joinery manufacturers today is the impact of the growing skills shortage, and how it affects employers. This is an unrelenting dilemma for our industry, and the Government’s Apprenticeship Levy, designed to tackle this issue, is not being adopted by as many as was anticipated, especially smaller businesses. Those who browse our website will be aware of FIESTA – the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance – a new trade organisation that is setting out to address the industry’s current and future skills needs by encouraging talented new workers to join the industry, and ensuring relevant training and qualifications are in place to support them. An initial Q&A piece with the FIESTA chairman is featured in this issue on p4, and we will follow developments over the coming months to see how its agenda progresses. I would welcome hearing about your staffing issues, your trainee programmes and anything to do with this vital issue. Lastly, I’d like to draw another matter to your attention. The furniture industry faces a number of challenges – not least of them, the long-term impact of a growing skills shortage. Last year, FIESTA was formed – a new trade organisation which aims to address current and future skills needs by encouraging talented new workers to join the industry, and ensuring relevant training and qualifications are in place to support them.

FIESTA – facing up to a growing skills shortage Given the likely impact of Brexit, coupled with new apprenticeship legislation, the formation of the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) is a timely one. Gary Baker – the MD of Corian distrubutor CD (UK), and FIESTA’s chairman – tells Furniture & Joinery Production more about the organisation… Why was FIESTA formed? The UK has a thriving furniture and interiors sector, with more than 8000 businesses employing over 250,000 people and contributing £11b to the UK’s GDP. It is a design-led industry that contains many world-beating businesses. For the sector to continue to grow, it is essential that we continue to attract the very best school leavers and graduates. FIESTA was formed to unite and inspire furniture and interiors businesses, helping the industry become a sector of choice within the UK by facilitating internationally-recognised skills development. Who is involved? The key to FIESTA’s viability is that we are employer led – we have therefore brought together the key trade associations and affiliates which represent manufacturers and designers in this sector, together with the sector’s charity, The Furniture Makers’ Company. FIESTA’s members include the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF), the British Contract Furnishing Association (BCFA), the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM), The Furniture Makers’

an annual pay bill of more than £3m to spend 0.5% of the total to help fund apprenticeships. The impact of the levy so far has been disappointing. Recent research by the Education Apprenticeship Service has shown that almost half of eligible employers haven’t signed up for an account with the Apprenticeship Service. Just 10,500 accounts were set up by the end of August – barely half of the 19,150 predicted by the Department for Education. There have been 34,700 ‘commitments’ to take on an apprentice using the new service since May – of these, 8000 are still pending approval. FIESTA chairman, Gary Baker

Company, the Kitchen, Bedrooms, Bathrooms National Training Group (KBB NTG), the Kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA), The Kitchen Education Trust (TKET) and the National Bed Federation (NBF). FIESTA will also work with the British Furniture Confederation (BFC) to communicate education and training needs to the Government. FIESTA was formed off the back of The Furniture Makers’ Company’s conference last year, which focused on the apprenticeship levy. What impact has the levy had on the industry to date? The apprenticeship levy came into effect in April 2017, and is part of the Government’s commitment to creating three million apprenticeships in England by 2020. The levy requires all employers operating in the UK with

How can furniture manufacturers make the best of the new apprentice environment? Despite the disappointing start, it is essential that companies do not see the Apprenticeship Levy as just another tax, but instead make the most of the new levy funding to put in place a well-planned apprenticeship programme. The training costs for large employers can be funded from the levy, so it is in their interests to maximise their training in line with their growth plans for the future. Meanwhile, companies ineligible to pay the levy can benefit from Government support to fund apprenticeship training, with the charge being a fraction of what it costs to train each apprentice. Take the opportunity to review your current and future skills requirements, identify gaps, and plan the best way to prepare your workforce for tomorrow’s challenges. What is FIESTA doing to help manufacturers access the levy? FIESTA is working to set up an approved Apprentice Training Agency (ATA) for the furniture and interiors sector. ATAs recruit, employ and arrange training for apprentices on behalf of employers, and are designed and regulated to support both large and small members who wish to take advantage of the many benefits of the new training environment. We will provide more details of this initiative shortly. How can people find out more? FIESTA has launched a dedicated website to support its mission of addressing education and training issues within the industry. The new, easy-to-use platform features useful information for employers as well as people wishing to pursue a career in the industry, plus case studies, the latest news from the organisation and an events section. fiestalearning.com

In conversation with: Ian Myring, Advanced Machinery Services Ian Myring, an experienced engineer who works within the AMS Engineering Workshop, talks to Furniture & Joinery Production about his background in the woodworking machinery industry, his experience and the changes that he has seen in the industry in the last 50 years.

How many years have you been working in the woodworking industry? When did you start and why? I first started in 1965 as an apprentice, so that is over 50 years ago. I started at the main Wadkin Factory in Green Lane Road, Leicester, and really I worked most of my working life at Wadkin and in the woodworking industry. I don´t know why I chose this industry. Nobody in my family was working there but when I finished at school the apprenticeship seemed a good opportunity. I came through an interview at Wadkin and they liked me, I liked them and so I joined. What are you doing in AMS? I work on refurbished machinery and rebuilds as well as servicing machines at more local customers. I also use my experience to carry out installations and commissioning on the new Wadkin Bursgreen equipment, plus customer demonstrations of the new machines in the

FP294.indd 6

showroom – now I’m a teacher as well! We have five apprentice in the workshop and I like to help them and teach them what I know. I have 50 years experiences in the woodworking machinery industry, so they ask me a lot of questions and I try to answer and help them. It is fantastic to see that AMS is totally committed to training these youngsters, and it is very satisfying to see them develop and gain these new skills. Do you think that the woodworking industry has changed in the last 50 years? How? Why? When I first started, the machines were all the same colour. They were green machines and they weren´t very user-friendly. Health & Safety was also not taken seriously, with very few guards in place. The customers used to say: “You weren’t a proper machinist unless you had lost part of a finger” … not a very good test of anyone’s ability. If you look at the machines nowadays, they look really colourful. They are definitely safer

and easier to operate, and produce a consistent quality of product. You can’t even open the machines if it is working – keeping the operators away from danger – and there is more attention paid to the look of a machine rather than merely its functionality. In this respect, safety, design, colour, and quality of output are the ways the industry has progressed greatly. Can you help advance AMS’ future? AMS is constantly working to expand in all the areas of the business. I think it is excellent that we continue to train our own apprentices, so we pass over our years of knowledge about woodworking machines to the next generations. Now, we are also looking for field service engineers in the south of England, so if you are an engineer or wood machinist looking to move into a wood machinery support role or you would like to learn a lot about the woodworking industry, don’t delay and contact us on 08448 449949 or sales@advancedmachinery.co.uk.

Significant developments at Masterwood Masterwood has been producing woodworking machines for over 50 years, helping the furniture and joinery industry with its passion and professionalism. The Masterwood brand was born in 1990 out of the merger of two companies that wrote the history of the industry: Muti, a leader in the production of oscillating chisel mortising machines; and Zangheri & Boschetti, a specialist in the production of automatic multi boring machines. Under the new moniker, the dedicated development and building of CNC machinery has flourished in recent years. The synergy of experience and know-how brought in by both partners soon led Masterwood to become one of the reference companies, producing numeric control machining centres for both panels and solid wood production – exporting more than 80% of its production to all six continents. Following extensive negotiations, Masterwood Spa is announcing a new partnership with a leading Chinese woodworking machine manufacturer, Guangzhou KDT Machinery Co. All the Masterwood ranges of machines will continue to be designed and built at the Italian facilities, and Masterwood remains an Italian company. The company will still be using its engineering plant and parts from leading suppliers around the world – Beckhoff, Yaskawa, HSD, THK, and Schmalz.

FP294.indd 9

The new partnership will allow Masterwood to sell its products into the Chinese market with the help of KDT. Investment into the Masterwood Group will allow it to develop new technologies. Work has already started at the Rimini site where a large unit is being added to the current manufacturing works; this will give greater space for producing not just the standard CNC machines, but the growing demand on special production machines, many of which are with automated feeds

Italy’. Our first thought was to keep the employment and the Italian technology. “We believe this is great news for everyone connected to Masterwood, our staff and customers around the world, as it will allow us to keep them busy and support all their manufacturing requirements now, and for the future,” he states. Matteo Muti, CFO at Masterwood Spa, says: “This operation gives us the opportunity to reinforce our international dimension and

soon for door frame and window production markets, plus the ongoing software developments that makes Masterwood stand out in the market by supplying not just the machines, but a full range of software solutions to cover panel and solid timber work. Developments continue with Masterwood’s own software house – Tecnos – and other leading software companies that are closely connected. A busy year for Masterwood is already under way following

and are often designed and built to suit a customer’s bespoke manufacturing requirements. The new agreement retains Giancarlo Muti as the company CEO and Matteo Muti as CFO. “Masterwood’s DNA does not change,” explains Giancarlo Muti, “the future aim will remain to design and produce a highly technological product leveraging on quality, customisation and ‘Made in

compete more efficiently with the major players. “This partnership will greatly facilitate us, not only in the markets where we are present today, but in the potentially huge market of South-East Asia exploiting the synergy derived by the product range.” Further developments are already under way regarding new machines, with specials

exhibitions in Lyon and Valencia during February, Holz-Handwerk in Nurembergalong in March and an open house for all the Italian dealers. Ahead are the larger shows of Xylexpo (Milan), Drema (Poznan), Awisa (Sydney), Formobile (Sao Paulo), BIFE (Bucharest), W Exhibition (Birmingham), Tuyap (Istanbul), Lesdrevmash (Moscow), and Prowood (Ghent).

10 BUSINESS

www.furnitureproduction.net

In the second part of our series of articles exploring IP law, Jim Pearson of UK and European patent attorney firm Abel & Imray, on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), explains how a business can benefit financially from its IP …

How to make money from IP All businesses own tangible and intangible assets, but the successful businesses are often those that recognise and exploit fully both types of assets, which includes being on top of getting the most out of the business’ existing and prospective intellectual property (IP) rights. There are various financial advantages to be gained from holding intellectual property rights, ranging from being able to charge a premium for your goods or services to reducing your corporation tax bill. In this article, I will explain five ways in which IP can attract, make or save you money. Charging higher prices One of the principal features of intellectual property rights is that an IP right grants the owner exclusivity over certain subject matter for a period of time in certain territories. For example, if a worktop manufacturer creates a number of distinctive images for use as surface decoration on worktops and registers those as design registrations in the UK, no other party can then make or sell in the UK identical or similar designs without infringing the design registrations. Competition in relation to the suite of distinctive designs can be limited as competitors are deterred from producing something similar, creating greater demand and enabling the owner of the registered designs to charge a premium for the related products. Licensing revenue If the IP right covers subject matter that others wish to exploit and the right holder is willing to do so, the IP may be licensed to third parties in exchange for royalty payments. An owner of a patent covering innovative technology – whether that is a product, process or even a new software – may wish to keep an eye open for unwanted competition in relation to the subject matter covered by their patent and look out for licensing opportunities, or alternatively actively encourage licensing of their technology. Patent box The patent box tax regime has been operating for several years now, enabling owners of patents covering innovative technology that they have developed to pay corporation tax at lower rates. The patent box provides for lower tax rates for profits taxed in the UK relating to revenue from sales of patented technology, whether such sales occur in the UK or abroad. Obtaining a patent solely for such purposes can be very straightforward because the focus can be on

FP294.indd 10

what is going to be sold by the patent holder, not on seeking a scope of protection so broad that it will cover all of the workarounds that the competition might try to employ. Attracting investment and raising finance When a company is seeking new investment or looking to sell off a part or whole of the business, the protection afforded by the intellectual property rights owned by the business can be seen as valuable assets. If the company has created innovative technology or distinctive brands or exciting products, an investor will typically want to see that such innovative and creative work is properly captured and protected by strong IP rights. Some financial institutions will lend money using IP assets as security, effectively allowing IP owners to mortgage their IP. IP rights featured as a significant part of the pitch behind Ammique’s mattress-less sleep system

Example of IP helping to raise finance Ammique recently succeeded in crowd-funding the next stage of their business. The company’s research has shown that there is a gap in the market for a superior bed, their work resulting in a mattress-less and precision-engineered Ammique sleep system. They were seeking £500,000, but ended up with over £800,000 in crowd-sourced funding – see www.crowdcube.com/ammique and www. crowdcube.com/companies/ammique-ltd for further details. It will be seen that their IP rights featured as a significant part of their pitch, and investors will have been reassured that Ammique has secured valuable protection for their innovations, providing exclusivity over branding, as well as the technology behind their product. Showing enhanced value in the business It will be seen from the above that IP can attract, make or save a business money. It should therefore be no surprise that many businesses place their IP assets on the company’s balance sheet. While obtaining accurate valuations of IP can be a time-consuming and difficult exercise,

Jim Pearson

many accountants are taking advantage on behalf of their clients of the ability to show the value captured by IP on the books. An example within the furniture industry is Ikea. You might wonder how Ikea could achieve patent protection, when their designs are usually very simple. Actually, Ikea has at least 130 different ideas currently captured in granted or pending applications, and a suite of registered designs. Ikea seeks to patent manufacturing processes and tools, rather than individual products. An example is the Wedge Dowel, otherwise known as patented click technology, for enabling customers to more easily assemble the pieces of their furniture flat-packs. Ikea thus ensures that whilst a competitor could devise a similar design, they cannot replicate the same success. No doubt the IP rights features as assets of the business in their accounts and company reports. Conclusion Obtaining and registering IP is not always a cheap process, but can pay dividends in the long-term. If an IP asset is not going to enhance the value of your company, you shouldn’t be maintaining it. On the other hand, if you want IP in your business to be one of the valuable assets of the company, you should be looking to invest now to reap the rewards in the future. It is no surprise to learn that some of the most successful businesses in today’s economy are those that have historically invested in their IP, and continue to do so. For further information on any of the issues raised, or for queries on any intellectual property matter, Jim would be happy to assist. jim.pearson@abelimray.com For a local patent attorney, see CIPA’s website. cipa.org.uk/find-a-patent-attorney/

The unfortunate Italian football team may not be at the World Cup this year, but Xylexpo, the country’s impressive event for woodworking technology and components for the furniture industry can certainly be descibed as a world-class event.

Positive Xylexpo anticipated

Continuing its path of improvement since the global recession, Xylexpo is now once again recognised as an unmissable event on the calendar. In May, every other year, an increasing number of visitors is being challenged by new technologies, new techniques and solutions by visiting Xylexpo in Milan this May. The roster of exhibitors features not only the major but also the less well-known Italian brands, it is also increasingly an international platform which features companies and products from all over the world. This year – and in line with an approach that Xylexpo adopted several years ago before other exhibitions – each hall will have a focal point represented by one or more industry giants. In hall 1, this role will be played by Biesse and Barberan, whilin hall 2, it will be the SCM Group.

The woodworking industry is big business and has an estimated worth of £3.8b in the UK alone. With figures from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) suggesting an annual requirement of more than 3000 new positions needing to be filled every year to support the sector’s continual growth, the requirement for fresh new talent has never been more fundamental to the success of the industry. But, when faced with a challenging new apprenticeship levy, common misconceptions of the industry and strict Health & Safety legislation restricting work experience, how do businesses attract and retain young talent?

Championing young talent with the W Exhibition and Elements This year, the W Exhibition and sister show, Elements, are continuing their pledge to help champion the industry’s future and promote new talent in the furniture manufacturing industry. Lisa Campagnola, event director for the W Exhibition and Elements, explains: “When I joined Montgomery in 2014 and took over the running of the W Exhibition, the first thing I did was go out and speak with the industry. Unanimously, there was one area that exhibitors and visitors alike wanted to hear more about – apprenticeships. “It quickly became apparent that apprenticeships were vital for this industry but people were left feeling baffled by jargon and lots of questions were being left unanswered. Where do you find the talent? How do you pay for this talent? And, more importantly, how do you retain that talent?

FP294.indd 14

“We’ve addressed this problem, and this September, the W Exhibition and Elements will be launching its first Education Zone. With the support of our show partners – Didac Ltd, the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the National Association of Shopfitters – we will be introducing an area within the exhibition that will be specifically dedicated to apprenticeships and careers within the furniture and joinery manufacturing industries. “Whether you’re an employer looking to offer an apprenticeship, an employee looking for your next step in the industry or a student who is interested in the sector, industry specialists, career advisers and business gurus will be on hand to answer questions and offer sound advice.” Taking part in the Education Zone, BWF’s Iain Mcllwee says: “It is critical that we do everything we can to promote apprenticeships in the

woodworking sector. The industry relies heavily on a skilled workforce, with apprenticeship figures around seven times higher than the national average. “The introduction of a dedicated careers area means that we can help to support the industry, highlight the benefits of working with young talent and promote the importance of businesses engaging with students who are considering a role in this industry. It’s a fantastic opportunity and one the BWF are proud to be a part of.” Jon Gibson, MD at Didac, adds: “As a national training provider that is deep rooted in this field, the new Education Zone will give us an opportunity to focus our attention on education. Over the last 12 months there have been a lot of changes to the apprenticeship programme and it is our job to guide employers and students through this and show them how we’re able to mould the new system into something we know will work in our industry. “We’ll be able to answer any

FP294.indd 15

questions or queries you may have about apprenticeships and offer advice on our latest training programmes and new legislation that is being announced later this year. I believe that the introduction of the Education Zone is a positive step forward for the show and will help to promote the industry further.” Lisa adds: “The woodworking industry is a community and the introduction of the Education Zone will give everyone an opportunity to invest in the industry’s future. KBB 2018, the best year yet for BA

KBB Birmingham delivered a record number of visitors to this year’s show, which proved to be the busiest year yet for many exhibitors, especially for award-winning BA Components. Once again, the best show for connecting BA with the lifeblood of its trade – the men and women that work in the KBB industry who visit from the length and breadth of the country. According to BA Components, the KBB event keeps getting bigger and better, with more exhibitors, more products, and more visitors. With a stand of 120m2 displaying recentlyreleased products, BA Components certainly grabbed the attention of trade professionals. With 10 distinctive kitchen displays, the exclusive BA Diamond Club enclosure, a new storage solution called ClicCube and its elegant Glidor bedroom system all complemented with new teaser colours and styles for 2018, BA gave an impressive, personal experience for visitors to remember. David Caulfield, sales and marketing director, comments: “The response was unbelievable

during the four days at the KBB. We received an abundance of interest spanning all our products, and comments were all so positive. The opportunity to showcase our product and spend quality time with our dealers make this an important strategic event.” Brian McCracken, MD, says: “It was great to meet our customers as it’s not often I get to sit down and have a proper chat with them about all our products and future developments. Looking towards 2018/19, we used KBB as the perfect opportunity to gather market research before we decide on which colours and styles to launch next.” With new potential colours such as indigo, metallic copper and brushed bronze on display at the stand, customers could directly provide feedback to BA – what they felt their own customers would like, being a part of that decision-making process. The BA team provided a friendly vibe and were all approachable, sharing their knowledge on an eclectic mix of kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture. BA launched its ClicCubes – the latest stackable storage development in the world of tool-less flat pack furniture designed for the British consumer market. ClicCubes by BA are a simple, modern and practical storage solution offering durability as well as being stylish. Freely movable and incredibly versatile, they are suitable for all types of environments including the home, schools, offices, retail outlets and more. ClicCubes by BA in tower format can be bought in stackable configurations and complemented with storage baskets to provide an eye-catching modular storage solution. Users can even opt for no backing or wall-hung to create an attractive display when filled with accessories. Break up a neutral scheme with over 16 colours from which to choose for a contemporary twist. The response to this new product drew interest and curiosity with lots of retailers requesting more information.

David also says: “KBB Birmingham truly made our trip worth the time, plus the hard work, and the money spent to be part of the biggest UK trade show for our industry. From all here at BA Components we would like to thank all who visited our stand and we look forward to being of service.” bacomponents.co.uk

Häfele enjoys record success at KBB Furniture fittings and architectural hardware specialist Häfele is reporting its most successful year to date at KBB, the UK’s leading trade fair for kitchen and bathroom design. During the four day event, which took place in March, hundreds of visitors attended the company’s two-storey stand to take a handson look at the latest innovations in kitchen functionality and design. Visitor figures from the stand demonstrate record interest this year, with over 700 pieces of Häfele literature requested and 181 new customer visits organised on the stand during the course of the event. The company presented a diverse mix of industry-leading designs from Häfele-manufactured brands, as well as its trusted partners Smeg, Grohe, Grass and Vauth Sagel. Product highlights included Häfele’s stand-out range of statement pendant lighting; a new range of six well-crafted pendant styles, inspired by both vintage and ultra-modern designs; and the

innovative Axilo plinth adjusting fitting system, exclusive to Häfele, which has been specially designed to enable perfect plinth alignment easily and comfortably. Häfele stand partners Vauth Sagel and Grass also displayed a wealth of must-see products, including the former’s showstopping Cornerstone Maxx, with its beautiful new lava grey finish and planero drawer design, and the latter’s award-winning Nova Pro Scala – a high quality and expertlydesigned movement system that offers a harmonious, transitional style and gives maximum scope for creativity. As well as the stand-out products on display, the Häfele stand offered a range of exciting additions – the interactive Loox lighting room, which allowed visitors to experience the simple technology and striking effect of Loox lighting for themselves, was particularly popular and led to over 120 requests for Loox information. The Häfele Pitstop, supported by Smeg, included a café and seating area where visitors could

relax with refreshments and view an assortment of Smeg products, including Smeg fab fridge freezer, dishwasher and stand mixer. Visitors to the stand even got

the chance to take part in a competition to win a luxury spa break for two, by having their photo taken in Häfele’s #LooxAtMe frame and sharing it on social media. Chloë Thacker, marketing director, Häfele UK, comments: “It was a very busy few days on the Häfele stand, and we were thrilled to see so many new and existing customers excited about our new product innovations. “A huge thank you to everyone who came to see us, and got hands-on with the products – whether that was in the demonstration zone, the Loox lighting room, the Smeg café or the Grohelounge. We can’t wait to see how 2020 will top what was our favourite KBB yet!” hafele.co.uk

Lamello’s successful KBB debut

Lamello’s products are ideal for the sleek, clean designs currently in vogue with kitchen designers

Wood and panel fixings specialist, Lamello, made its KBB show debut in March presenting its extensive product to the UK market. The Swiss manufacturer showed its recentlylaunched Cabineo connector at the show. This unique cabinet fitting, which can be installed in a drilled or routed shape that requires no edge drilling, offers faster installation, greater reliability and a higher clamping force when compared with a traditional cam and dowel fitting. It makes wooden dowels a thing of the past. Moreover, Cabineo is the ultimate panel fixing for flat-pack furniture as it can be fitted prior to packing without risk of damage during transit and makes in-home cabinet assembly extremely simple for consumers. A range of other fixing technologies for applications as diverse as invisible shelving and frames were also being shown alongside a selection of power tools and Lamello’s pioneering biscuits joining system. The stand also included the P-System and invisible magnetic joining element, Invis. At the show, Lamello also featured an interactive area where visitors were able to explore the various ways Lamello can make

assembly tasks easier. The company put on live demonstrations throughout the four-day event, allowing all the benefits of Lamello products to be seen first-hand. Shaye Chatfield, Lamello area sales manager comments: “Our stand was a combination of

traditional know-how and modern, effective, customer-oriented solutions. We showed visitors just how much time and money they can save by using our innovative panel-joining products.” lamello.com

As its business grew, NAW Interior Solutions’ faith in the Felder Group proved well placed.

Felder edgbander at NAW Interior Solutions NAW Interior Solutions, founded and run by Neil Wallwork, based in Bolton, produces bespoke kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and custom cabinet solutions. After learning his trade whist working for other people, Neil decided he could do this on his own. In 2012 Neil purchased his first machine from the Felder Group, a Felder G300 edgebander, and with his business becoming more and more successful, in 2016 it was time to upgrade his machine to cope with the higher capacity of work. “When we needed to upgrade our edgebander we visited a range of manufacturers and Felder really stood out to us. They did a site visit, they listened to everything I wanted and took the time to discuss the various options to make the machine do exactly what I wanted and needed. “It didn’t stop there either – with the after sales support, if there are any issues with the machines, you can call the service desk who can talk you through fine adjustments and minor repairs. It is a good service!” NAW Interior Solutions purchased a G480 with a heat lamp as well as pre-milling and buffing aggregates. “I needed a heat lamp to pre-heat the edging as the workshop is quite cold during the winter and it makes a big difference to the quality of the finish,” says Neil. “After seeing the edgebanders in the Milton Keynes showroom, I decided to purchase the extraction from them as well.” 01908 635000 felder-group.co.uk

MK Ply Lining, a Milton Keynes-based specialist in bespoke vehicle storage systems for over 20 years has, for a second time, invested in a new Elcon vertical panel saw from Daltons Wadkin.

MK Ply Lining upgrades with Elcon vertical panel saw From its production facility in Bletchley, MK Ply Lining manufactures and installs a wide range of plywood van racking and storage solutions for the vehicle industry. Established in 1996, MK Ply Lining’s precision, in-house manufacturing facility now boasts state-of-the-art equipment including CNC routers, sanders, table saws, and now an Elcon 155DS wall saw. MK Ply Lining director, David Ruck, had the pleasure of owning an Elcon vertical panel saw in the early stages of the business. However, after years of reliable production, the machine was replaced with an alternative brand of wall saw. After using the replacement saw, David Ruck quickly came to the conclusion that it just did not make the cut! David comments: “We had very recently invested in our second CNC router just as it was time to replace our first Elcon wall saw. Hence the decision was made to

FP294.indd 24

purchase a less expensive model to replace the Elcon, as the second CNC router would help with the workload. Almost instantly, we all realised how much we missed the Elcon. The strong build quality and ease of use make Elcon stand out as our preferred brand of vertical panel saw.” David contacted Daltons Wadkin director, Alex Dalton, to discuss part-exchanging the replacement vertical panel saw against a new Elcon 155DS. Discussions with Alex swiftly resulted in the part-exchange of MK Ply Linings’ existing machine. A new Elcon 155DS wall saw complete with digital readouts to both the vertical and horizontal axes to ensure fast and accurate setting was specified. David also opted for the heavy-duty flip-down stop extension to the measuring scale – an indispensible feature considering the machine is in a heavy production environment. Key benefits which the entire

Elcon range share are a robust modular welded frame to ensure accuracy throughout the machine’s lifetime and the ability to precision cut to 0.1mm. This guarantee is achieved by Elcon’s patented resincasted guidance system. The Elcon 155DS vertical panel saw has the capacity to cut up to 55mm deep, allowing multiple panels to be cut at a time. MK Ply Lining finds the repeat stop for strip cutting particularly useful as repeat size horizontal cuts are needed frequently for the ply shelving. Transport rollers for handling heavier sheet material are also a standard feature. Daltons Wadkin provided a turnkey installation. Specialist HiAb transport removed the existing wall saw and at the same time delivered and positioned the new Elcon vertical panel saw before a factory-trained engineer installed and commissioned the machine ready for use. As part of the commissioning process, a group of

operators received familiarisation training to safely set, operate and maintain the machine. A production machinist from MK Ply Lining comments: “The entire team are so glad to have got rid of the old saw and have an Elcon back. “The digital read-outs are the best feature. They save us time setting the machine and now because of the precision, we only need to make one cut.” Daltons Wadkin is the exclusive distributor for Elcon vertical panel saws in the UK and Ireland. The Elcon 155DS is an increasingly popular model in a variety of industries across the UK that require a robust machine, with accuracy and ease of use by multiple operators. Introducing Axminster’s Sauno wood kilns by Logosol

T

E a H D

C •

• Axminster Tools & Machinery’s Sauno is a range of wood kilns made by Logosol, offering a time-saving, cost-effective solution for hobby and professional woodworkers. Incorporating new Swedish drying technology, Sauno wood kilns make wood drying achievable and affordable for even the smaller scale woodworker and will produce better results. In most cases, air-drying the timber outdoors is the best method. In certain instances joinerydry timber is required, and for that a wood drying kiln will be required. A Sauno wood drying kiln is recommended by Axminster if users want to avoid finished products cracking or warping, or would like the opportunity to get hold of unusual wood types to use when doing woodwork or are making

doors, furniture or windows. A major problem when drying timber is the wood retaining the water it holds. However, Sauno overcomes this problem by using a method called relax drying. This method is frequently used in large sawmills for their best timber, thereby reducing the risk of cracking and other damage caused by accelerated drying. The wood kiln heats and steams the timber at high temperatures, changing the cell structure of the wood and making it possible for water to move outwards from inside the wood. The next step is to dehumidify the timber. Sauno offers woodworkers, requiring timber with a consistent moisture content, a choice of three kiln kits – VT1, VT3 and VT5 – depending on the scale required, ranging from shorter

pieces and low volume right through to larger sized pieces and bigger volumes. These kits consist of just the dry control unit and thermostat. Once the kit arrives, customers will need to construct an insulated kiln box. Two plans are included – one using an insulated wooden frame, the other using structural floor insulating panels. This DIY solution lowers investment costs compared to other drying solutions. The Sauno kiln will shorten the maturing process from years to weeks. It produces timber with less cracking and more stability than other drying methods. The drying process is quick and economical – a large benefit for all woodworkers. axminster.co.uk

Whether you’re in the panel processing industry, door, window or stair market, produce flooring or interior fitting elements, Homag has the perfect solution for any business looking to completely transform their manual spraying process and step up into the world of automated painting and lacquering.

New Stenner resaw options from Daltons Wadkin

UK-based and world-renowned manufacturer Stenner has designed new versions of its popular resaw in order to increase the scope provided by the already-established ST100R. The 100R machine is widely installed and has become very much the resaw of choice for scores of timber suppliers, fencing and garden furniture manufacturers and joinery producers in all parts of the country. The resaw incorporates a cast iron table, pneumatic saw tensioning, a 15kW motor drive, HMI control system and photocell-activated feed with foot pedal override. The new kids on the block are the RB and RS models introduced for 2018. The ST100RB maintains many of the features of the 100R whilst being priced at a level which should have appeal across a wide spectrum of timber users. The machine shares the same

FP294.indd 32

capacity and build quality as the 100R but has manual controls to the feed roller and fence movements, thereby representing more traditional operating methods. The ST100RS in contrast builds on the features of the 1OOR by adding variable saw pulley speed as standard, increased motor power to 18kW, auto programmable fence settings and remote control pedestal incorporating full colour touch screen. This version has been designed to meet and in many ways exceed the performance levels formerly only associated with larger capacity machines. DaltonsWadkin director, Francis Dalton, is delighted with the new range enthusing: “The versatility provided by the new range gives us the opportunity to reach a wider cross section of the timber, using trades by

34 DUST EXTRACTION & WOODWASTE

www.furnitureproduction.net

Over the past decade or so, there has been a significant change in the way tools have been made to meet the needs and requirements of the user. This has led to a significant investment in R&D by tool manufacturers to design and develop durable products that can deliver an efficient overall process and a high-quality finish on a variety of surfaces, while protecting users against the dangers of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVs) and dust particles.

Safety in the user’s hands HAVS, which affects the blood vessels, nerves, muscles, and joints of the hand, wrist and arm, is becoming a bigger issue for workers as it is a condition they cannot see or are maybe unaware of that is affecting them until it is too late. The reason for this is basically that each worker may have different tolerances for the amount of vibrations they can handle or they may not realise there’s a problem until they try a different tool or do not use their own one for a while. For Mirka, the fight against HAVs starts with putting the emphasis back on the user and this has been achieved with the introduction of the myMirka app (applicable in the Bluetooth enabled tools within the Mirka product range). The app provides the end user with the vibration levels from the tool on a colour graded scale, and advises on how to lower the vibration if required. Additionally, the speed the tool is being used at can be visualised in a real-time graph. Furthermore, if more detail is required, there is an in-app purchase that tracks the daily vibration levels in relation to European standards for a comparable scale of the pressures being put through their joints on a daily basis, which will allow the business to see how the tools are being used and potentially assist in the implementation of measures to protect the workers. The App is available to download through Google App and Apple App store. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – Industrial of Mirka UK, says: “This app is one part of the re-education process that the user should go through alongside being instilled with the best practices when using tools. We advise the importance of working closely with either their foreman or health and safety co-ordinator to ensure that their tools meet the necessary requirements that reduce the risk of injury.” Extraction systems may seem like they take up a lot of space but dust particles can be a major health issue for employees and could possibly lead to respiratory problems. This is why more and more businesses or single users are investing in systems to allow them to work in a dust-free work environment. Laboratory tests have shown that without dust extraction, dust in the air per kilogram of sanded material is over 200g per kg, and dust on surrounding surfaces is almost 800g per kg. These may not seem like large quantities but when they accumulate over a long period, they could potentially turn into both a fire and health hazard for the business. However, investment in a suitable mobile extraction system is not a short-term injection

FP294.indd 34

of the business’ cash, it should be viewed as a long-term commitment, so that it can provide an effective solution for a cleaner work space, a reduction in prepping and tidying up at the end of the day, and the potential dust contamination of other tools and surfaces. The smaller systems are more often used in workspaces because they are equipped with a local air supply and extraction, and are easy to move and store. Mirka’s Pete Sartain comments: “A dust-free environment ensures control of the sanding process and allows for multiple work phases to be undertaken in the same room, delivering efficiency both for the business and in terms of tool usage. “It also reduces the risk of ‘dust pills’ and clogging as the dust can no longer collect in lumps on the sanding discs to the same extent and there is no longer a danger that sanded dust will build up and create grooves on the sanding surface and fill up the disc reducing its sanding capacity. The abrasive maintains its aggressive properties over the entire surface much longer than traditional paper materials that have long wilted and faded, making sanding more even and efficient.” Here are some top tips to achieving a dustfree environment and protect from HAVS: 1. An increase in vibration can cause damage to the tool, so be aware that any variation in the weight of pad other than when using P180 paper discs can cause it to vibrate more. 2. Always use a genuine Mirka backing pad on Mirka tools, as it has been specifically designed for certain machines (a DEROS/PROS 150mm backing pad is engineered to weigh exactly

130g). However, if you use a generic non Mirka pad it may alter the vibration of the tool and, in turn, cause damage to the bearing and other aspects of the tool. Mirka tools returned with non Mirka pads fitted are not covered by the Mirka warranty. 3. If intending to use an interface pad (5mm/10mm), you should remove the backing pad and insert the grub screw that comes in the box with the tool inserted into the remaining threaded hole beneath the pad. This will counterbalance the weight of the interface pad and reduce the vibration of the tool when in use. 4. The grub screw should also be used if coarse or heavy weight discs (P40/60 etc) are on the sander. 5. Using a pad saver will protect the backing pad from wear. However, if used when sanding plaster it often reduces the efficiency of the dust extraction. If P80 to P120 discs are used with a pad saver, Mirka recommends the insertion of the grub screw. 6. Ensure that the product is regularly serviced for optimum performance. 7. Make sure the fleece bag in the mobile extraction unit is not full and does not have any rips or holes. If it does, replace it. 8. Periodically remove and clean the motor filter. This can be done by placing it in a bag and gently knocking the dust out of the filter. Or better still, use another vacuum or extractor to clean the filter. Once it is clean, replace the filter in the machine. 9. Make sure the seal between the tank and upper section of the extractor is clean and not damaged. mirka.com

Dust Control Systems has supplied and installed a new externally-sited dust extraction filter unit for longstanding customer David Urquhart Joiners.

DCS filter upgrade for David Urquhart Located on the north-facing coast of Aberdeenshire, just a couple of miles to the west of Portsoy and opposite Glenglassaugh Distillery, the company specialises in the manufacture of custom-made doorsets, for both internal and external application, and bespoke or standard specification staircases. Established almost 30 years ago, the business continues to be managed by owner David Urquhart, along with his son Wullie, and employs a skilled team of joiners

and installers for projects ranging from residential work to complete commercial fit-outs. Back in 2005, Dust Control Systems was commissioned to supply and install a complete dust extraction system at the workshop and then later, in 2009, DCS engineers returned to retro-fit energy-saving control equipment to the system. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems, comments: “It’s always a pleasure to be invited to return

to a customer’s premises to re-configure or update an existing dust extraction system – it’s generally a sign that our customer’s business is doing well, but it’s always an affirmation that we are doing our job right.” To cope with increasing levels of production, David Urquhart commissioned DCS to install a new high-efficiency filter unit, along with a replacement for one of the three existing fan units. The new 37kW direct drive fan replaces a 15kW unit, is inverter controlled,

and provides an extraction volume of 21,350m3/hr – bringing the system’s total extraction capacity to almost 50,000m3/hr. Additional auto-dampers have been fitted to machines in the factory and, as machines come on- and off-line, sensors detect the changing extraction requirement and the main fan speed is regulated to match demand – optimising extraction and minimising energy consumption. The new NFKZ3000 modular chain filter unit has reverse air regeneration for cleaning the patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and pressure-free disposal of collected waste is achieved via a rotary valve. A waste transfer fan then delivers the waste material through a closed-loop system into an adjacent storage silo and, in the colder months, warm air can be returned from the filter unit to the factory. The return air system, controlled by a manually-operated summer/ winter gate, also includes a fire damper with fusible link and microswitch. “Another safety feature that DCS incorporated into the extraction system at David Urquhart’s are the CARZ explosion isolation valves which, in line with current ATEX recommendations, are installed in the ductwork between the fans’ outlets and the filter unit,” explains Melvyn. If an explosion does occur, the isolation valves are designed to prevent the effects of a pressure wave and flames from travelling upstream in the ductwork, and back into the factory. In conclusion, David Urquhart adds: “Despite the relatively remote location of our factory, we are always impressed with the sales and service response, and the efficient project management provided by Melvyn and the team at DCS – they dismantled the old filter unit on a Friday, installed the new filter in its place over the weekend, and commissioned the system on the Monday.” 0800 040 7116 DCSlimited.co.uk

Leicester-based dust extractation and control expert, Air Plants, has created a new extraction system for UK Timber which tailors the volume and waste type of each application and delivers a total, low maintenance solution saving on time and space.

Air Plants delivers a cleaner, more efficient system for UK Timber Based in Corby, Northamptonshire, UK Timber is a leading supplier of both hardwood and softwood materials and products. The company was looking to improve its levels of extraction and to eliminate the time required to empty its various extractors, ideally being able to discharge waste into a container or trailer for easy disposal and utilise limited space to locate a new filter and fan sets. There were notable problems with the exisiting set-up. Temporary extraction solutions were no longer fit for purpose and were very labour intensive to empty and maintain. Staff faced the arduous and dirty task of changing over-full bags of waste twice a day. Several dozen oneton tote bags were taking up room in the yard. Solution provided Air Plants specified a Modulair filter and a Baghouse dust collector with 48 500mm diameter XL filter sleeves. The longer sleeve length enables the unit to be located on a smaller footprint without compromising the overall filter area. The 500mm diameter sleeves are designed to handle the high volume of waste produced, which is predominantly oak with fairly high moisture content.

FP294_revised.indd 38

A 30kW main fan is connected to the new suction main, onto which all machine connections, bar one, are fitted with blast gates. This ensures that the suction is directed to the machines in use, eliminating the need for a bigger than necessary main fan. The extracted waste is transported from the filter by a 300mm diameter rotary screw, which is more reliable than a chain conveyor – this will cope with high volumes of waste in concentrated bursts, and is virtually maintenance free. A rotary valve releases the waste into a loading fan and then into a trailer with a closed loop transfer system. This returns the air from the trailer, resulting in a sealed system with no leaks to atmosphere. The whole system is run by a control panel, sequencing the start-up and shut-down procedures and greatly reducing the risk of blockages on restart. On commissioning, the control panel is set up to the individual requirements of each application to ensure the system is tailored to the volume and waste type of each individual application. In case of a delay in changing the container over, a secondary closed loop divert has been

fitted so that waste can be diverted into a chip store in the interim period and avoid production losses. The store is connected to the suction main via a duct fitted with a blast gate, which enables the chip store to be emptied back into the main trailer once it has been changed over. 0116 283 3581 airplants.co.uk

Furniture manufacturer saves money with woodwaste heater West Midlands furniture manufacturer, Lugo Group Europe, has eliminated unnecessary heating and waste disposal bills for its 30,000ft2 factory in Walsall and increased its environmental credentials by investing in a new woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT). For over 15 years Lugo Group Europe has designed and manufactured high quality, bespoke, environmentally-friendly furniture for the hospitality industry. The decision makers at Lugo Group Europe realised investing in a woodwaste heater would help it freely dispose of wood waste whilst also saving money on heating, as it no longer needs to run the current gas heaters that the business relied on to keep the factory warm during the cold winter months. With the business situated in a smoke control area, head of group production, Martin Williams, searched the internet to find out more about clean air-friendly biomass solutions and discovered the range of heaters on offer from WWT. Following more information and a site survey, WWT’s specialist engineers installed a WT15 woodwaste heater into the factory late last year. Martin Williams explains: “Kurt Cockroft and the team at Wood Waste

Technology provided us with really helpful advice regarding our factory being based in a smoke control area, and how to comply with these guidelines. We’re delighted with our wood waste heater. It’s perfect for our business needs, and the team at Wood Waste Technology delivered everything promised.” MD of WWT, Kurt Cockroft, says: “It’s been a pleasure helping Lugo Group Europe save money whilst further reducing its carbon footprint.” WWT offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand, fired units to larger fully automatic systems and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. In addition, WWT is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk lugoeurope.com

The trend towards dull matt surfaces and those that appear untreated has become more widespread in recent years, suggests Redwood Innovations, UK distributor of Hesse Lignal coatings.

Invisible Hesse coatings offer invaluable safeguard

Surfaces with a bare wood effect are increasingly in demand, writes Redwood – especially as a design counterweight to high gloss furniture and coloured fitments. This is unsurprising, writes the company, because the look and feel of these surfaces appeals to the senses in general, and lend furniture a timeless attractiveness. “Untreated wood surfaces have limited suitability for decorative use,” says a company spokesperson. “Most bare and unprotected surfaces become soiled by the environment and use, and quickly become significantly less appealing. Hesse have a solution for preventing this – Invipro-Oil.

“Invipro-Oil offers the ideal conditions for achieving a bare wood effect on woods with coarse pores – especially oak. This nonaccentuating oil leaves the surface appearing completely bare and uncoated, yet it reliably protects against damage with normal-tomedium use. “Its dull matt surface makes the exclusive natural wood continue to appear untreated. There is nevertheless the certainty of an invisible protective shield on the apparently bare surface, since Invipro-Oil makes the surface resistant to water and liquid, and thus also easier to clean and scratch resistant.” Redwood says that Invipro-Oil should be applied thinly to the surface, depending on the type of wood and desired protection level, then rubbed in and the excess subsequently removed. This process is repeated after

FP294.indd 42

brief intermediate drying and the surface is consequently invisibly protected. “If it’s the ease of a sprayed lacquer finish that the customer is looking for, then the Natural Wood Effect DE 42900-0003 delivers impressive surface protection but no trace of coating to the naked eye,” says Redwood. “Natural Wood Effect is a two-component PU scratch-resistant, dull matt lacquer, formulated with special light protection – a multicoat system for priming and final coating for openpore lacquer coatings. The product can be used on bleached wood – particularly applications on maple, oak, conifers and softwoods.” To book a demo of Hesse Lignal’s invisible look coating, contact Redwood Innovations, open Monday to Friday from 7.30am-4.30pm. 02392 233310 redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Automated material handling is key for manufacturers looking to remain competitive and reduce costs.

Success flows with Homag’s automated solutions Once considered to be exclusively for larger industrial businesses, material handling solutions are now available to manufacturers of all sizes helping them to reap the benefits of integrating conventional machinery with automation. Homag Automation’s wide portfolio of material handling equipment is designed to help furniture manufacturers maximise productivity via the use of machinery and intelligent data flow. From automatic board storage systems through to the final stages of packaging, Homag Automation’s range is focused on supplying businesses with cleverly configured concepts to achieve optimal material flow. Delivering more potential with a Homag storage system Managing the challenges of storing, tracking and handling large flat panels is something all kitchen, bedroom and office furniture manufacturers face. Keeping track of exactly which boards are in stock, the volumes being used and the space required to store them is hard enough, but ensuring the right quantity of the right board is delivered at the correct time, adds another level of complexity to the challenge. Providing the perfect foundations for efficient production, Homag’s TLF horizontal board storage concepts are highly intelligent

systems which offer huge efficiencies at the very beginning of the manufacturing process. Logistically optimising the flow of panels with ultimate precision, the TLF range can completely transform production economies. Maximising productivity, minimising downtime as well as saving valuable factory floor space, the TLF storage system proves to be a real money saver. For companies specialising in low batch, make-to-order production, using various board types, colours and sizes, these systems can revolutionise the manufacturing process. Homag’s TLF storage systems are also capable of being interlinked to a beam saw, a CNC nesting router or a combination of both creating a truly intelligent solution. A seamless link from the software to the storage system provides faultless stock control. The system notifies the user when boards and even part-boards have been used. It knows where all the boards (full sheets or off-cuts) are in the system and alerts the user when stocks are running low. The system also knows which boards are needed at which machines and delivers the correct quantity just in time, so production is optimised. The system is also capable of generating barcode labels so that once the boards are cut into parts, they can be easily identified as they progress through the factory.

Boomerang return systems to revolutionise material flow To complement production further down the manufacturing process, Homag offers a range of automated return conveyors. These Boomerang concepts can be paired to almost any throughfeed machine achieving higher productivity and increased efficiency. With the use of a return system, the flow of workpieces is automatically optimised and enables one man operation of the machines. Whether requirements are batch size 1 or serial production, an automatic return conveyor from Homag simply streamlines the manufacturing process. Within the range, Homag offers three key models which between them can process workpieces at feed speeds of 8 – 36 m/min. The TFU 120, TFU 140 and the TFU 521 editions have all been designed to offer an automated solution to maximise productivity for all levels of the industry. With the integration of a Homag return conveyor the handling of parts is decreased meaning that the risk of damage to workpieces is significantly reduced. The TFU 120 and TFU 140 are ideal for manufacturing facilities where space is limited due to their compact footprint while the TFU 521 offers a higher degree of automated handling thanks to a de-stacking facility at the

rear of the line. Existing users of Homag’s TFU return systems have reported excellent return on investment enjoying a reduction in quality issues, higher throughput and reduced labour costs. Efficient high class carcass assembly With the continued increase and demand for individualisation, furniture manufacturers wanting to remain competitive need to ensure that their production facilities house the most efficient, flexible technology available. This is true not only for the machine shop, but also for the final assembly area of the factory which is often overlooked. Developed specially to overcome this challenge, Homag Automation offers a range of machinery from entry level upwards for the assembly area taking efficiency to the next level. The MDE 120 automatic throughfeed carcass clamp is Homag’s mid-range solution for flexible, efficient carcass assembly. Designed to provide consistently high quality, the MDE 120 skilfully combines its electronic weight measure and high sensitivity to regulate the power required for each type of carcass that passes through it. Using its integrated intelligent sensors, the machine is also able to automatically determine the size of the pre-assembled carcass and adjust itself accordingly, drastically reducing set-up times.

FP294.indd 45

Homag carcass clamps can be used as standalone machines or as part of a sophisticated assembly line. Various model choices are available for manufacturers producing in batch size one, make-to-order or high volume production. Equipped with Homag’s powerTouch controller, operators can easily and efficiently program the required settings, offering an innovative automated solution which not only saves time but also energy within production. Taking the headache out of packaging Recognising that higher throughput rates of batch size one production can cause considerable packaging headaches for manufacturers, Homag has created an automated, versatile solution to remove the need to stock pre-made boxes and expensive filler pieces. The VKS 250 produces bespoke cardboard packaging on a just-in-time basis effectively putting cash back into the business. Able to cut boxes exactly to the size of the product to be packaged, this machine can save up to 30% in material usage. Operated as a stand-alone box making machine or used inline, the Homag VKS 250 provides an on-demand box-making facility for any production line. This highly flexible automated solution produces boxes of all sizes, from as small as a 20mm x 20mm x

20mm, up to a 1m x 1m x 10m box. Robustly yet accurately processing all grades of single and double-wall corrugated board, the VKS 250 seamlessly handles material thicknesses from 2.5mm to 6.5mm. Homag’s powerful powerTouch controller provides the machine with the required packaging dimensions. These can be fed via simple manual operator input, master data – which uses a barcode to gain the product’s dimensions – or a highly intelligent volumetric scanner whereby the product is three-dimensionally scanned and data is automatically transmitted back to the hub of the VKS 250 for instant packaging generation. Data is systematically stored within the system so that various product sizes can be easily retrieved for future use. Intelligent yet affordable solutions Homag’s automated solutions are available for all levels of manufacturing offering significant gains in productivity and efficiency as well as providing labour saving opportunities. Investment in automation is made easy with a range of flexible finance solutions that are available from Homag Finance which is able to create tailor-made finance packages to suit any budget. A variety of new designs has now been chosen to update the dp-limitless offer. The latest additions include: Rehau Crystal Mirror, a versatile acrylic which gives a clear mirror reflection but with added benefits – it is lighter than genuine glass and can be processed with conventional woodworking tools, its durability is higher than glass, and it is a much safer product as it does not shatter; Alpi Veneers, a range of seven decorative composite wood surfaces which replicate the colours and grains of natural wood; Aecore, a line of eight thermoplastic decorative laminates for use in furniture design and the architectural sector; and Malone Fabrics, a vast selection of artificial leathers to add to the company’s faux leather range, which convey a feeling of comfort and elegance and are, says Decorative Panels Lamination, second to none in terms of sustainability and ease of care. 01484 658341 decorativepanels.co.uk

Since its arrival on the scene in the Sixties, the MDF market has grown rapidly – and Lawcris offers one of the most comprehensive ranges of MDF products available in the UK.

Lawcris points MDF users in the right direction Many people will remember the days when blockboard was all the rage, and the ideal product for kitchen manufacturers – aside from the fact that it spelched/splintered when cut, was not that stable, and the uneven surface would cause issues when veneering/ bonding. So, there was widespread relief when lightweight MDF came to the scene and revolutionised the woodworking industry, and MDF has continued to grow in strength over the years. Lawcris has always been known for its diverse melamine and laminate collection, but its portfolio extends much further than this. Selling raw board is where it all began 35 years ago, and, since then, product knowledge and customer trends have determined how Lawcris’ MDF offering has been shaped, helping make it one of the most comprehensive ranges of MDF products available in the UK.

FP294.indd 48

Dean Carrol, head of procurement at Lawcris, says: “We have always kept a huge stock of MDF on the ground. It is easy to get carried away with the decorative boards, but most industry sectors that we service need these functional MDF boards as well.” It may be unusual to think of MDF as having trends, but there are definite fluctuations in the market for variations of this strong and versatile material. Standard MDF will always have a place in most joiners’ hearts, and, with this knowledge, Lawcris offers over 50 alternative lengths, widths and thicknesses from 2mm up to 60mm. As the world gets more environmentally sensitive, Lawcris recognises that zero-addedformaldehyde MDF is becoming increasingly popular in applications where formaldehyde emissions need to be kept to a minimum, such as in museums, laboratories, art galleries, nursing homes, hospitals, nurseries and schools. Recent unfortunate events documented in

the media have meant fire-rated products are rightfully becoming more prominent in the market. There are many variations of MDF, so whether standard, lightweight, fire-rated (class B and C), moisture resistant, zero-added-formaldehyde, deep-rout, external, bendi long or short grain, butt and bead, black throughout or hardboard MDF is required, Lawcris can provide it – all FSC or PEFC certified. Further to this, Lawcris’ Creative CNC department also offers popular feature panels that have been routed out of MDF to create a patterned finish. These come in three attractive made-to-order patterns – Short Wave, Long Wave and Cestino, a favourable basket weave effect. All patterns are good for feature walls, wall panelling and counter fronts, and the Long Wave and Short Wave also look particularly good on drawer fronts and doors, reports Lawcris – samples are available on request. Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

Furniture craftsmen can choose from a wide range of Ostermann handles to bestow numerous characteristics – from classical and playful, to modern and subtly restrained – on their pieces. With such a wide offering available, Ostermann’s customers are spoilt for choice …

Ostermann’s guide to effective handle selection The choice of handles has a big influence on the effect a piece of furniture evokes, reports Ostermann. For example, hidden recessed handles or delicate furniture knobs unobstrusively put emphasis on the surface, while rod handles give a linear structure to the front. On the other hand, with classics such as mitred, bow or segmented bow handles, the focus is on functionality. No matter which handle variant is chosen, Ostermann offers an appropriate solution for every style and demand. Redocol collection The new Redocol furniture handle range features all the classics, with different hole spacings and in various lengths and finishes. All products within the Redocol brand umbrella satisfy the highest standards of professional craftsmanship, while at the same time guaranteeing value for money with an economic benefit. Aluminium handleless system With 10 different aluminium handleless systems, as well as many accessories available to the carpenter/joiner, this Ostermann

range contains many forms and surfaces for horizontal and vertical mounting. The attractive handles are stocked and supplied in lengths of 5000mm – but Ostermann also offers a cutting service on request. Aluminium handles (cut lengths) The carpenter/joiner can choose from 24 different models in various colours. Ostermann supplies aluminium handles in lenths of 2500mm, and, again, offers a cutting service on request. Aluminium handles for cabinet widths Made of high quality aluminium, these elegant handles are designed for the most common door widths. The cutout sides are already machined and polished. Aluminium handles (made-tomeasure) Ostermann can now personalise and customise the popular handles and recessed grips from its stock range for frontal designs. The profiles are cut and processed, and the customer receives a ready-to-fit product. W ostermann.eu

Whether you’re in the panel processing industry, door, window or stair market, produce flooring or interior fitting elements, Homag has the perfect solution for any business looking to completely transform their manual spraying process and step up into the world of automated painting and lacquering.

Homag GSF 100 – revolutionising surface finishing for the future As one of the latest additions to Homag’s product portfolio, the GSF 100 range was specifically designed with both small- and medium-sized companies in mind. Equipped with a reciprocating arm and four spray guns, these machines feature a fully automated vacuum conveyor belt to transport workpieces for ultimate flexible, throughput efficiency. The GSF 100 can be used as both a standalone spray machine or as part of an extensive finishing line. The integration of an automated paint application system ensures that a high quality finish is continuously achieved whilst reducing the amount of overspray waste, ultimately proving to be a true cost-saving investment for businesses. The cost efficiencies are also

boosted via the GSF’s intelligent workpiece detection system. A high resolution light grid accurately identifies the contours of each part, precisely controlling the paint flow of the individual spray guns. In the standard specification, the large machine filters are easily accessible and replaceable for the simplicity of cleaning and general maintenance. This feature reduces the effort required from the operators in terms of the upkeep of the machine. In addition to this, the introduction of automatic spraying within production significantly increases the working conditions for employees. The GSF 100 can provide consistently high quality painting or lacquering for up to 2400 parts per shift therefore not only does it reduce

paint exposure for operators but it also eases workload pressure produced when using a traditional manual paint applicator. GSF 100 S – automated spraying with an added throughfeed alternative The GSF 100 S has been specifically developed to offer the market an efficient alternative to manual spraying. Enhancing the automated spraying application process, this model has been purposely built to require low operating costs at an affordable investment level. Equipped with a complete throughfeed transport belt, workpieces are effortlessly fed into the spray booth on individual trays. Once the spraying process is complete, the parts continue to be conveyed out of the machine to the end of the belt.

The Homag GSF 100 range offers automated painting and lacquering solutions for all workpieces

Especially designed to transport even the smallest of parts, this model widens the opportunity of production possibilities. GSF 100 SH – enhancing spraying technology with automated efficiencies With the GSF 100 SH, Homag offers an automated workpiece handling concept for the loading and unloading of parts. Based on the standard GSF 100 range of features, the SH model is capable of one-man operation. Using an innovatively designed infeed system, components are gently guided into the spray booth. Once the spraying process is complete the parts are then reloaded back on the workpiece loading trolley. This concept provides an easy flexible and reliable finishing solution that requires low personnel and due to its compact design, low production space. The GSF 100 SH can be adapted and individually specified to meet the production demands of the manufacturer. Specific functions can be incorporated to the standard model to offer increased flexibility. Combining a two-way loading function provides uninterrupted operating cycles. Subsequently, this doubles the amount of workpieces within the machine, since one loading rack can be changed whilst the other batch is in operation.

FP294.indd 53

Furthermore, the largest of production volumes can be achieved on the GSF 100 SH by doubling both the automated concepts of loading and unloading. The use of a two-way loading function at both sides of the machine delivers an almost self-sufficient concept, significantly increasing efficiency in production. Success flows in automated finishing The launch of the GSF 100 range at Ligna 2017, represented a real milestone in Homag’s history of finishing technology. Already proving to be a roaring success within the market, Homag has completed a number of installations and are continuously receiving a high level of enquiries for their new automated spraying solution. Opening up the possibilities for cost effective automatic spraying technology to all levels of industry, the GSF range can be coupled with flexible payment plans from Homag Finance making these machines more affordable than ever! Growing global coverage driven through an unwavering entrepreneurial passion sees Salvador automatic crosscut saws continue to gain market share and reach record results – and Daltons Wadkin echoes this with increased UK demand for automatic crosscut saws.

“Salvador crosscut saws – we never stop”

Christian Salvador, sales manager of the company that shares his surname, summarises the past, intense year. “We had an extremely positive 2017 that has confirmed, even to those who still had some doubts, that the crisis is over,” explains Salvador. “We never stopped believing that new opportunities were still there – we’ve chosen to never stop working hard on it. And we were right – within the last few years we’ve doubled our turnover, broadened the range of crosscutting solutions, raised the technological level of our machines, and started new entrepreneurial experiences”. Located in San Vendemiano, in the northern province of Treviso, Italy, Salvador specialises in the production of automatic, programmable crosscut saws that, at its very core, reduces cutting times, increases safety, reduces waste and boosts productivity and efficiency across a wide range of industries. “We’re pleased with the work done on all markets, worldwide, remaining faithful to our commitment to become ever-more global,” says Christian. “The facts have proven us right – for several years now our turnover has kept growing, thanks to, and above all, having strengthened our position in many countries. We’ve had very good returns on our investments in Eastern Europe, and positive signs on the former Soviet Union countries and Ukraine markets. The Balkan market area is going well and Scandinavia even better, returning to levels of high interest. The Romanian market is an area of great excitement and we’ve got excellent news also in North America. All this has helped us become who we

FP294.indd 56

are today – a lean company, having about 20 employees and a turnover close to €6m.” Alex Dalton, director of Daltons Wadkin, sole agent and distributor for Salvador in the UK and Ireland, comments: “A pattern of demand has clearly emerged over the past few years. Customers are seeking higher productivity machines, solutions that allow them to reach ever-higher levels of quality in a shorter time. “The most forward-thinking business leaders in the woodworking sector are taking advantage of Salvador crosscut saws, allowing them to increase their flexibility and boost their production rates.” The strategy chosen by Salvador is to follow the market by analysing customers’ requests and feedback. Rather than translating this information into special machines, or tailormade solutions, the company has chosen instead to enrich and refine its entire product range creating an industry-leading portfolio of high-tech crosscutting machines. Testament to this philosophy is the success of Salvamac, the Polish manufacturing facility for semi-automatic crosscut saws set up just 18 months ago, which has already exceeded the targets set by Christian Salvador. The Salvamac range allows even the smallest crosscutting requirements to be met with an innovative solution for decreasing labour skill, increasing safety and speeding up production. It is not only the products that have evolved, but Salvador’s philosophy, too. “The times demand us to look beyond, to combine, for example, the internet and more traditional sales support, by setting ever-more rapid and effective supplier-customer relationship models,” adds

Christian. “We need to create relationships, to act as catalyst – we must be network makers. I strongly believe in our next evolutionary step.” In the meantime Salvador is looking forward to the 2018 trade show calendar. Daltons Wadkin will be exhibiting the latest line of Salvador croscutting machines at this year’s W Exhibition in Birmingham at the end of September. Alex comments: “We have taken our biggest stand yet at this year’s event to help showcase our range of high technology woodworking machinery, including Salvador programmable crosscut saws and smaller Salvamac semiautomatic machines. Our team is already getting excited about the prospects and opportunities to meet new and existing customers.” The two major international events of the year, in which Salvador intends to invest more, are Xylexpo (8 -12th May), the trade show held in Milan, which has changed gear, transforming a difficult moment into an opportunity to review their role and target. “We’ve always believed in this appointment in Milan. This year we’ll have a large booth that will show four of our most successful machines – the Superangle 600 with a drilling unit, our flagship, alongside a Superpush 250 and a Superpush 200, in addition to a Supercut 500,” declared Christian. “We were also be present in Nuremberg, in March, at the Holz-Handwerk trade, where showed a Superpush 200 equipped with loading and unloading system, a Superangle and a Classic 50, one of the solutions bearing the trademark of our Polish Salvamac.” 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com daltonswadkin.com

Vollmer’s band saw business changes hands Grinding and eroding machine specialist Vollmer will transfer its wood-cutting band saw business to Swiss sharpening machine manufacturer Iseli on 1st January 2019. With the agreement, Iseli will obtain the rights of use and marketing for this product area, while Vollmer will continue to perform service and maintenance activities for the machines delivered up to the acquisition date. According to Vollmer, the disposal of this product segment is part of the company’s long-term corporate strategy – the business plans to focus on its growing CNC-controlled grinding and eroding machines, investing more heavily in circular saws and rotary tools, and equipping itself with additional resources in order to develop new technologies, services and machines. 2.vollmer-group.com

Manufacturers urged to monitor radon levels amid new exposure rules With new rules recently introduced on radon exposure, global testing, inspection and certification firm Bureau Veritas is advising UK manufacturers to review monitoring of the carcinogenic radioactive gas following a new lower limit of radon permissible in the workplace. As part of Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17) UK, businesses must adhere to a revised radon exposure limit of 300Bq/m3 in the workplace, replacing the previous 400Bq/m3 threshold. Under the reforms, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has also introduced a threetier system, known as the graded approach, requiring organisations to either notify, register or get consent from the watchdog for certain work relating to unsafe levels of exposure. As a result, manufacturers will need to pursue testing and remediation in the first instance, and will only be required to notify HSE once remediation shows that levels cannot be reduced below the new limit. Ian Mitchell, a principal consultant at Bureaus Veritas, comments: “We hope the new rules coming into force this month will finally put

FP294.indd 60

Radon risk assessment

radon on the radar for many organisations, which despite being the second leading cause of lung cancer in the UK, has long been overlooked. “Manufacturers are now compelled to ensure they have a robust and effective strategy in place to protect employees. “This starts with a radon risk assessment and monitoring, which is essential in order to meet the new lower radon exposure limit of 300Bq/m3

permissible in the workplace. “For many manufacturers these new regulations will be hard to decipher as so much is dependent on individual circumstances such as property type, sector and location. The good news is that it’s simple and cost effective to measure radon levels and relatively straightforward, depending on the potential level of risk, to manage and mitigate the risks.”

As the Mighton Machinery range from Mighton Products continues to gain momentum following its 2016 launch, it has earned the company high praise from a number of skilled joinery firms across the country, with the latest review coming from Swift Joinery Manufacturers …

Mighton Machinery range packs a punch The Castleford-based joinery specialist was quick to commend the speed and quality of Mighton’s X-Cut glazing bead jointing machine, as the comapny’s Steve Greenwood explains: “We purchased the machine 18 months ago due to high demand for plant-on Georgian Bars, and by far the most beneficial feature of the machine is its speed. “It’s proven to be a tremendous time saver on production without compromising on accuracy – we cannot fault the quality of the manufacture of the joints.” Drawing on significant personal joinery experience, the Mighton Machinery range came about following months of research and development by chairman Mike Derham and the Mighton team. The range of machines is designed to make joinery production quicker, easier and more efficient for both the small- or large-scale operator. The popular semi-automatic Mighton X-Cut machine produces cross joints on glazing beads, coming complete with tooling to suit the timber profile of the user’s choosing. Accurate and consistent, it allows for simple tool changes

FP294.indd 64

and no lengthy manuals, meaning it is quick to set up and easy to operate – something for which Steve can vouch. “We took advantage of a visit from the Mighton Mobile Demo Van, which we found incredibly helpful,” says Steve. “We were able to see first-hand just how straightforward the X-Cut machine was set up and operate.” With 16 years in the joinery industry, Steve and his team of 20 have been buying Sash Lift and Eyes, Angel Ventlock Window Restrictors and Securefitch Fasteners from Mighton for 10 years. Mike Derham adds: “With many years’ combined experience between the team, Swift Joinery has grown to become a true specialist in the manufacture of bespoke timber windows and doors. “Manufacturing and building 95% of their products at their Castleford site, they are able to oversee every aspect of production, ensuring that their bespoke design and hand-crafted products are built to each customer’s exacting standards. We are pleased to hear that the X-Cut machine has contributed to the speed

and accuracy of their production, as one of the foundations of our machinery range was built on was saving our joinery customers both time and money by simplifying and speeding up the manufacturing process. “As the Mighton Machines range continues to pique interest, we are thrilled to announce that a dedicated catalogue has been introduced this year, packed with product info, case studies and information on the free demonstrations that we offer.” 01223 497097 mightonproducts.com

The machines are comprised from 70% sustainable raw materials and 100% renewable energy resources, making them the perfect addition

to busy operations utilising an environmentally friendly process. In order to cover the wide range of storage space that companies have available, the new range includes six models – five freestanding and one desktop, portable unit. Cardboard Shredder CP333 – Desktop This savvy, compact shredder is a convenient table-top size desktop which is ideal for packing operations where space is limited. This model ticks all the boxes with its high quality, technical

functions meeting the demanding requirements of busy pack rooms. Cardboard Shredder CP316 and CP320 These free standing units are designed to suit a variety of warehouse operations and pack rooms and are proving to be popular cardboard shredders that can create void fill from thicker cardboard. Cardboard Shredder CP422 (single phase) and CP422 (three phase) These industrial machines are built to create up to six cubic metres of void fill per hour and are available with either a single phase or three phase plug. It proves particularly useful for businesses require high volumes of parcels to be filled. Cardboard Shredder CP430 This freestanding unit is the largest shredding machine in the range and is therefore suitable for larger packing operations. Its capabilities include producing the most cubic metres of void fill in an hour – shredding up to 20mm of thick cardboard. kitepackaging.co.uk

A good home for Aisle Masters at Gallery Direct Gallery Direct’s growing business with increasing product lines is putting greater demand on its storage and handling system. Working with Gallery Direct’s handling consultant, Locators, Combilift’s Aisle Master forklifts helped deliver the goods. Gallery Direct was established in 1973 as a small family business and is now a leading British-based designer, manufacturer and worldwide distributor of home décor, furniture and accessories. It has experienced a period of exceptional growth in recent years and has extended its warehouse in Sittingbourne to cope with ongoing global demand. The 130,000ft2 facility houses over 1600 product lines which range from pallets of vases to king-sized beds, all of which need to be offloaded, stored and reloaded for despatch with the ultimate efficiency. Five Aisle Master articulated forklifts look after the majority of the handling and storage procedures, and work round the clock from Monday to

Friday to keep pace with Gallery Direct’s tight schedule. “We got our first three Aisle Masters a couple of years ago and were impressed with their reliability and versatile indoor and outdoor capabilities compared with reach trucks which struggle outside, so it made sense to go with the same brand when we were looking at enlarging the site,” says warehouse manager Richard Swann. “The trucks are manoeuvrable and nifty, the drivers love them and their narrow aisle ability has enabled us to get maximum storage density.” Gallery Direct’s materials handling consultant, Locators, and the manufacturer of the Aisle Master brand, Combilift, worked together to configure the racking which comprises a mix of 2057mm wide aisles for standard UK pallets and 2650mm where oversized products are handled. This enabled 8000 pallet spaces to be accommodated in the extension, making a total of 11000 in all. Richard points out that this is at least 25% more than would have been possible when

using less manoeuvrable forklifts. The two new Aisle Masters, delivered in the autumn of 2016 to coincide with the opening of the new facility, are heavy duty 20SWE models with large 930 amp batteries and are on five year contract hire with Locators. The two tonne capacity is more than adequate as very few of the loads handled by Gallery Direct weigh more than one tonne. An 11m three-stage mast was specified as the top beam is two bays higher than in the original storage area at 10.5m. Three charging stations and a spare battery for the smaller Aisle Masters ensure constant availability for the 24/5 operation. An in-cab camera aids drivers when storing and picking from the highest beams and shorter than standard forks were also fitted to prevent them from protruding to the other side of the racking. Gallery Direct’s operations manager, Ciaran Aldous comments: “Growth has mushroomed in the last year or so and we have

furthered our expansion by incorporating Dreamworks Beds and Frank Hudson Furniture Makers into our portfolio, so it was crucial to find a system that promised forklifts with optimum flexibility and the best possible use of every inch of space, and Aisle Master and Locators made this happen.” aisle-master.com locators.co.uk

Keep security in mind with Dial Locks

ENG_JAN18

The need to keep valuables and personal belongings safe in homes, offices, shops and locations with public access such as leisure centres has never been greater, says Unico Components, which has introduced the Dial Lock, from furniture lock specialist Lehmann of Minden, Germany, to the UK market. The Dial Lock offers a solution for keyless access to desks, lockers and all types of storage cabinets where valuable items or documents are stored. Dial Locks offer a high number of possible combinations and have been designed with an integrated scramble feature that automatically resets the dials when a door is opened or closed. This range of high quality, four-dial combination locks, which are easy to programme, are available in cam, slam, push bar and espagnolette versions, and are simple to install on hinged, tambour or sliding doors. They can also be fitted to pedestals with drawers – left and right-hand versions are available and are complementary to anti-tilt systems. In addition, there is also provision for an emergency opening procedure offering a code-find function should the user’s code be forgotten. Dial Locks can be supplied in both Freecode and Fixcode styles. The Freecode Dial Lock is best for once-only use of storage such as guest lockers or for lockers in public areas, while the Fixcode model is ideal for users who retain the same storage for some time. Dial Locks can be installed on a range of materials from 0.8-21mm thick, including metal, glass and wood. 01483 237621 sales@unico.uk.com unico.uk.com

Cutting edge plug-and-play co-generation plants manufactured in Italy to exacting standards, the SyngaSmart CHP systems are housed in 20 ft insulated and sound proofed modular shipping containers, enclosing the whole generation process, from biomass loading to power generation. SyngaSmart solid biomass combined heat and power systems are carbon negative with no waste. Emissions are limited to the engine exhaust gases which comply with all emission standards and restrictions. The “no waste” production cycle only generates energy and a small amount of biochar, a powerful natural fertilizer and water treatment additive. SyngaSmart systems are eligible for the Government RHI scheme, (Renewable Heat Incentive), which rewards businesses that adopt biomass heating systems for all the metered heat generated for 20 years. A welcome additional income stream.

Kite expands its foam protection range Protecting items during transit is critical for many businesses as it ensures the items do not arrive to customers damaged and unable to use. It is also just as important to protect items in storage. Foam protection is an extremely versatile product and is used to protect a wide range of products. Kite Packaging has extended its foam protection range and has improved its pricing across all foam products, making them highly price competitive. Ideal to protect from shocks and vibrations Kite’s newly-launched range consists of the following: Foam blocks – Protective blocks that prevent goods from movement and damage. They are self-adhesive and stick to the inside of boxes or containers and fit around the goods in any voids. Available in two different strengths the blue blocks are low-tack making them removable and the white blocks are high-tack for a permanent fixture. Foam sheets – Providing a protective layer between surfaces, foam sheets are extremely lightweight. Kite’s range of foam sheets is the ideal solution when used on delicate surfaces to protect against scratches and marks. Foam pouches – Lightweight foam pouches are ideal for protecting a variety of goods. They

FP294.indd 72

are produced from non-abrasive 1mm thick, high-quality foam to protect against scratches, vibrations and shock. Net foam – Perfect for cylindrical-shaped items and for a range of industries, the sleevelike design simply slips over goods for instant protection. W corner protectors – Designed to protect vulnerable areas that are easily knocked or scratched. W corner protectors are manufactured from heavy duty foam and simply slot on to 90° corners and will remain in place. Kite has also extended its range of gift packaging by adding wood wool to its range This latest option is ideal for presentation purposes. It is a fully bio-degradable, environmentally-friendly solution that does not cost the earth. Commonly used where presentation is important, Kite’s light shredded timber-based wood wool is used for bottle packaging, giftware packaging, product display and gift and hamper packaging. As well as looking presentable, it is perceived as a high-end finish and it is widely used for protecting items and acts as a great void fill for products such as antiques, glass, crockery and much more. kitepackaging.co.uk
