Comment On the eve of Xylexpo, expectations are high and this year’s event boasts the major and less well-known Italian brands. The key brands will of course be taking centre stage: Biesse and Barberan in hall 1, SCM in hall 2, Homag and Cefla in hall 3, IMA Schelling and Weinig in hall 4. I will be reporting on the new ideas direct from the show in next month’s issue. Don’t forget to tune into my Twitter account (@FurnitureProdEd) for on-thescene updates. John Legg Looking further into the year, we have the UK industry’s dedicated event, the Editorial director W Exhibition & Elements, being held in September/October. The latest update from the organiser tells says that plans are well advanced for an exciting and engaging show, and that this year’s event will be its biggest to date! As usual, we will be providing unrivalled news and information prior to, during and after the event. We’ll also be exhibiting there, and we’re once again creating the show catalogue on behalf of the organiser. With only four months to go, it’s time to get organised! Speaking of time – specifically downtime – the adage that time is money is so true. Just simply going without emails can prove a nightmare – but when production facilities struggle to cope, for whatever reason, it can have a serious financial impact on a business. A recent global study showed the majority of companies have experienced at least one ‘unplanned downtime outage’ over the past three years, costing a staggering average of £183,000 per hour across all businesses. In an article from Northern Industrial in this month’s issue, David Lenehan argues how both soft and hard policies are of equal importance when it comes to keeping things up and running. Enjoy the issue.

AXYZ enters waterjet cutting industry following new company acquisition AXYZ International has recently acquired American firm WARDJet, a waterjet cutting systems specialist. According to AXYZ president, Alf Zeuner: “The synergy of the two companies and the complementary technologies now available will result in a huge increase in manufacturing, technological and manpower resources, with the latter adding close to 100 new employees to the AXYZ International team.” Both companies will continue to operate independently from their respective locations, with WARDJet co-founder Richard Ward remaining as the company’s president and Alf Zeuner acting as overall president. Welcoming the acquisition, Richard Ward comments: “With immediate effect, we now have a much larger and global footprint in the waterjet cutting
industry, not to mention the huge increase in manpower and marketing resources from which we will benefit as a result of the partnership now forged with AXYZ International.” Explaining the logic of and motivation for the acquisition, AXYZ International’s UK-based vicepresident of market development, Robert Marshall, comments: “Contingent upon the materials to be processed, waterjet cutting technology can provide a more appropriate solution to CNC routing and cutting technology. “The availability of the two complementary technologies from a single manufacturing and supply source will greatly enhance the capabilities and global reach of both companies and lead to increased mutual growth, enhanced manufacturing capabilities and
commensurate profitability.” Established in 1991, AXYZ International now has 13 owned and operated global outlets. The company manufactures, markets and services machines direct to customers, with no intermediate supplier intervention. This has led to a high level of reliability and consequent customer satisfaction. In conclusion, Robert Marshall
Blum expands its UK warehouse Blum UK is once again expanding its UK warehouse – nine years after building the 3000m2 automated warehouse in 2009. The new extension will add a further 2000 stock locations, and will also increase the speed of picking, as there will now be two picking locations. The new facility is scheduled to be live by November this year, and will continue to add to Blum’s One Experience initiative which is to provide exemplary customer satisfaction. blum.com

Modern apprenticeships boost from partnership with college A new Modern Apprenticeship programme has been created at Norbord, Inverness, to develop skills that are focused on the technical and manufacturing aspects of the process at the mill. The new Technical Manufacturing (TM) Modern Apprenticeship is an 18-24 month programme consisting of a combination of theoretical learning and practical hands-on experience within the production process, and results in an SVQ2 qualification. Emma Eadie, HR assistant, says: “We have always supported Modern Apprenticeships and take on two apprentices every two years
Matthew Glanfield joins Blum
Blum UK has appointed Matthew Glanfield as its new technical manager. It is quite a career change for Glanfield, who was previously a sergeant with Bedfordshire and then Thames Valley Police. However he feels that his past experience sets him up nicely for his future role. “I have valuable experience and insight into customers, and how various industries work together.” Matthew explains. “In Blum, I saw an opportunity to change careers, which, while meaning I face new challenges, means I also get the satisfaction of helping develop the Technical Support team, and learning a whole new industry.” “Blum has a great ethos regarding staff training and care, which fully aligns to my own character. The opportunity to work with a small focused team really appealed as well.”

to be trained in either mechanical or electrical engineering to help support our maintenance teams. “However, we’ve also been keen to support the production side of our operations and we looked at putting a training package together that both met our operational needs and for it to also qualify for a Modern Apprenticeship status.” Emma worked with production manager, Mark Reilly, quality assurance technician, Jennifer MacDonald, and alongside Inverness College to develop a suitable programme. Emma adds: “The college is very familiar with
our operations from our past work with them with our existing apprenticeships and they were very helpful in looking at our production roles and developing an educational package that would support a new apprenticeship programme.” 01786 812921 norbord.co.uk
Dawn of a new age in customer service Customer service used to be about answering telephones and responding to written requests, but our fast paced, social media-driven society has put this function firmly in the spotlight. Consumers now post on a variety of social media platforms about anything from a positive experience with a product to an issue with an item being out of stock. With the rapid evolution of these channels and the immediacy of the content, we have started to see the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram become customer service portals as well as places where people can publish selfies or thoughts on the job at hand. This change is a good thing for the customer service side of the business, as it allows organisations to see what consumers are saying about their products as well as providing them with channels through which they can build relationships, educate, advise and highlight key messages to a large and engaged audience. At Mirka, we use Twitter not only to promote our products but also to direct customers to other areas such as customer services. Sometimes 280 characters are not enough to provide all the information required, so we aim to drive traffic back to our website, where users can find out more detailed information and where they can potentially look at other solutions. We also point users to our added value services such as our approved service centres and we use social media to ask for feedback to help us continually improve what we are offering. While some companies may view that there is a downside to these channels, as they offer an immediate way to get in contact with the brand, often in a negative way, they have a strong upside if handled correctly. A good customer service team would respond to comments or questions within 30 minutes to one hour of receiving them. Even if the posting is negative, the person should feel warmer towards the company because he or she is being listened to. With Twitter, businesses should think carefully
about the tone of the response. At Mirka, we aim to answer in a more conversational voice, as it humanises the brand and makes people feel as if they are talking to a real person instead of an automated system that churns out generic answers. We prefer to direct message (DM) or take the query offline so we can make contact and provide full details as required. For Instagram, the platform is used more as a customer service tool to educate users through product imagery shown in its natural environment, as well as provide them with relevant information. For example, where to find products or how to register a warranty. The advice and information posted on social media is starting to play a bigger role as part of the customer service strategies of businesses, because having a good online presence shows your customers that you care about them and are willing to listen to their queries or issues and are accessible. This, in turn, will lead to a greater rapport being built with them, leading to goodwill towards the brand, the end result of which is usually increased sales and greater profitability. mirka.com

More young lives could be saved, says Mighton boss

Mike Derham, chairman of Angel Ventlock window restrictor manufacturer, Mighton Products, has made a further call for the UK to follow the US in intensifying legislation and educational efforts to prevent young children falling from windows. Mike highlighted National Window Safety Week, an initiative of the National Safety Council, which has linked with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to raise awareness about the dangers of children falling from windows in a campaign that took place during the first week of April. This is to further reduce the estimated 3300 children aged five and younger, who are treated each year in US hospital emergency departments. Sadly, an average of eight deaths are also recorded annually. In the UK, more than 4000 such accidents happen each year. “In the US there is far greater awareness of the dangers posed to young children of falling from windows than here in the UK,” says Mike. “Legislation is tougher but this is supplemented by public awareness initiatives including the National Safety Council, which
Karl Horsley, Mirka’s national accounts business development manager, and Mark Rimmer, technical sales development, from the automotive division, will be participating in the MK to Amsterdam cycle challenge from 21st-24th June 2018 to raise money for Willen Hospice, Mirka’s chosen 2018 charity. The inaugural event will take both men, along with 38 other participants, 300 kilometres from Milton Keynes to the centre of Amsterdam over the course of three days at an average speed of between 12 and 16 miles per hour. In preparation for the ride, Karl and Mark have developed their own bespoke Team Mirka training programme that includes running five kilometres, riding on a turbo trainer indoors, local bike rides and playing football. During the event, Karl and Mark will be providing regular updates on their progress as well as insights into the various cities, towns and villages they pass through or stop at via Mirka’s social media channels.

even has a Window Safety Task Force that provides important information on how effective window safety practices and hardware can help reduce the amount of injuries.” Roto Frank of America, the US distributor of Mighton’s award winning window restrictor, has a representative on the Window Safety Task Force. “Despite the work of the Child Accident Prevention Trust and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) legislation in the UK is comparatively poor. “Legislation in the US imposes the ASTM [American Society for Testing and Materials] standard which helps prevent falls, educates parents and carers about window safety and defines standards for safety devices, especially those that prevent falls without interfering with emergency egress. ASTM standards are used in the UK for other products so this is something that could so easily be remedied and without significant cost implications to anyone,” adds Mike. mightonproducts.com
Karl Horsley says: “Mark and I decided to challenge ourselves this year by signing up to this ride and I have definitely been putting in the miles for it. My main aim is to cross the finish line and feel as fresh as I did at the start, while ensuring donations keep rolling in, like the peloton in the Tour de France.” Mark Rimmer adds: “This is something I have never done before, so I have no idea what to expect but the training has been going well so far. The thing I do know is that I will be having fun and probably laughing a lot with Karl during the kilometres we are cycling across the UK and northern Europe, while raising money for such an amazing local organisation.” To donate, visit www.justgiving. com/fundraising/mirkauk

Call for entries for BWF awards The call for entries for the 2018 British Woodworking Federation (BWF) awards has now been launched, giving joinery sector businesses a fantastic opportunity to showcase their finest achievements from the last year. From hand-carved craftsmanship to high-tech innovations, the awards give great projects, products and people the recognition they deserve, helping businesses benchmark their progress against the very best of the industry. The closing date for entries for this year’s awards is 22nd June.
BWF chief executive Iain McIlwee began this year’s call for entries: “With wood taking over as the architectural wonder material of this century, the awards are a chance for UK joinery businesses to prove that they cannot only build it better with wood, but build it in a way that is more sustainable, more productive, healthier and safer than the rest. “We urge all UK woodworking businesses to spare a minute and think about what, or who, they might want to put forward as an entry.” The winners will be announced at the BWF’s Annual Awards Dinner in November with the shortlist to be revealed in October at the W Exhibition, which is the national show for the joinery and furniture industries. All shortlisted entrants will receive a free place at the dinner and will have their achievements promoted through a high profile marketing and social media campaign. Entry is free and open to all, including non-members of the BWF so long as they are from the UK joinery and woodworking sector. The deadline for entries is 5pm on Friday 22nd June 2018. Entries for this year’s awards can be submitted at www.bwf.org.uk/ choose-wood/awards. The BWF awards 2018 categories are: The Product Design in Wood category, sponsored by Teknos; The Woodworking Project of the Year, sponsored by Whitehill Tools; Process Efficiency, sponsored by W Exhibition; Health & Safety Hero, sponsored by Didac; and Apprentice or Trainee of the Year, sponsored by CITB.

A recent global study showed the majority of companies have experienced at least one unplanned downtime outage over the past three years, costing a staggering average £183,000 per hour across all businesses. David Lenehan of Northern Industrial argues how both soft and hard policies are of equal importance in keeping things up and running.
Hard and soft approach to avoiding downtime “Downtime is, in short, a nightmare. But in such a physical business as furniture production, a common error in the hair-tearing stakes is to concentrate primarily on hardware problems, where sometimes the real issue is software. Before I carry on, let’s get something straight. Northern Industrial is not a software company. We work in multiple sectors, worldwide, specialising in spares and repairs for obsolete equipment. We buy up used equipment and keep it in stock for the day someone across the world has a breakdown and needs an obsolete part or repair to get them going again. So, while our focus as a company would initially seem very much on hardware, good software management by our customers can often be critical in how quickly we can get them back online. As an example, a furniture production client recently had a problem on a machine that puts the laminate edging on the cabinets. The machine runs 12 intelligent Berger Lahr stepper motors all run from a main computer. Six of the 12 motors had lost communication with the main computer and so were not running. Our engineer went to site to diagnose the fault and managed to make the computer see the motors but the computer could not operate them. He decided to take the six faulty motors off, readdress the six remaining motors and change their position so that they could resume some production at least. The six faulty motors were brought back with the engineer into our workshop where we did further fault-finding and discovered that they were not able to communicate with the motor as the memory on them had been corrupted. Luckily, we had had a previous motor from the customer at our workshop in the past and had taken a back-up of its program. This meant
we were able to reorder new chips and install the back-up program onto their motors before full testing. This was able to be done over a 48 hour period where the customer was able to resume full production after our engineer reinstalled them back at site. Had we not taken the back-up of their program earlier as standard procedure, the engineer would have had to remove one of the six working motors to bring back to Northern Industrial and copy the program. This would have meant the client would have had no production on that machine at all, as it required six motors minimum, and would have taken significantly longer. The lesson is that looking after your software is as important – if not more so – than looking after your hardware. Hardware can almost always be found somewhere in the world and shipping only takes so long – 24 hours or less with a good supplier. But lost software can be much harder to resolve quickly. Backing it up should be part of your obsolescence strategy. If you don’t have an obsolescence strategy, we recommend you get one. A good obsolescence strategy will ensure you get the maximum value from previous or new capital investments in terms of ongoing performance, performance improvement and energy efficiency. All hardware wears out at some point – the clue is in the name. So have a strategy that takes a head-out-of-sand view on when things are likely to go wrong and have plans in place to mitigate the risks, the key components being Repairs, Upgrade and Spare Parts. Taking a holistic approach encompassing both your hardware and your software will save you time, stress and money in the long run. nicontrols.com/uk

Simon Haslam of Abel & Imray – a firm of UK and European patent attorneys – explains on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) how your business can obtain IP protection outside the UK in the third of this series of six articles looking at IP.
IP issues abroad Furniture exports from the UK have been growing over recent years and look to exceed £1b in 2018. For many businesses international trade is becoming increasingly important and being able to obtain and enforce IP rights outside the UK is crucial to this overseas strategy. If you’re currently only protecting your IP in the UK/EU, would your business be bothered about a Chinese manufacturer supplying their own domestic market or exporting to the US? If there are plans to expand your business outside the UK/EU in the next five years, are you taking the right steps now to protect your future business opportunities? Free protection Some IP rights (such as copyright and European Union unregistered design right) exist when something is created without any need to register those IP rights, either in the UK or abroad. Copyright protects drawings, paintings and works of artistic craftsmanship (such as iconic furniture designs, like the Eames DSW chair, the E1027 side table and the Egg chair). EU unregistered design right can protect the 2D or 3D outward appearance of a product, or part of it including for example the colours, shape, texture, pattern and/or materials of the product or its ornamentation. Obtaining these unregistered rights is automatic and therefore free but while such rights are enforceable in countries other than the UK, there are some aspects of this free protection that you should bear in mind. When wanting to assert or enforce the rights against others, you will have to be able to prove that you own those rights. Keeping good records of authorship and design evolution is key here. There is also no infringement of such rights, unless it can be shown that there has been copying; you cannot stop someone from trading a copyright work if they made the copyright work independently, ie, without copying your work. Registering rights abroad Registered IP rights (such as patents, registered trade marks and registered designs) allow you to take action against third parties without having to show copying, and independent creation is no defence to infringement of those registered rights. Registered IP rights are territorial and so only provide protection in the territories in which they are registered. For example, you cannot enforce a French patent in the UK. However, it is possible to obtain registered protection in many countries through one application.
FP295.indd 14
Julius Blum GmbH has over 4000 patents and patent applications
For example, you can register both trade marks and designs in all of the countries in the EU via a single design or trade mark application. Post-Brexit, the protection afforded by these EU IP rights will still extend to the UK. Protection can be obtained outside the EU, and may be obtained for some countries in one application by making use of the International trade mark (Madrid) and design (Hague) systems. Kartell has made use of the EU registered trade mark and design systems, obtaining registered trade mark protection for the Kartell word mark to stop third parties from using the same or similar names, and registered design protection for the shape and appearance of many items of furniture to stop third parties from making products which give the same overall appearance as the designs which are registered. Under the European Patent Convention (the EPC – note not an EU treaty), it is possible to get a European patent which can be put into force in up to 44 countries including all those presently in the EU and more. Brexit will not have an effect on the European patent under the EPC nor your patent attorney’s ability to file and prosecute them. Julius Blum GmbH has over 4000 patents and patent applications, filed in many different countries – USA, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Europe for example – for furniture, particularly in relation to the mechanisms which facilitate movement of different parts of the furniture. Where, when and how to file/get protection? Obtaining IP protection outside the UK can cost a good deal. You therefore need to make sure that any IP protection you obtain is proportionate and pays its way. There are many ways of making money from your IP and these are discussed in https:// www.furnitureproduction.net/resources/ articles/2018/04/593211214-how-makemoney-ip.
In assessing how to balance the cost of IP protection versus potential gain, you will need to consider your markets and potential markets, those of your competitors and those of your licensees. Sometimes it will make sense to obtain IP protection in those countries where competing manufacturers will be based. Other times you might want to get protection in those countries where most sales occur. And sometimes, both will be advisable. It is important to apply for patent and design protection in advance of making any sales or other non-confidential disclosures, as the options for getting protection can be limited. In some cases – such as registered designs in the EU or US – there may exist a grace period of, say, 12 months, allowing a company to still obtain valid protection The first step to obtaining foreign protection is to file a UK application, which can secure a filing date – a priority date – for the basis of a future foreign right. UK applications can be relatively cheap, even with professional advice, because of the very low official fees payable at the UK Intellectual Property Office. For most businesses in the furniture/joinery industry in the UK, the most valuable form of IP protection abroad will be rights that cover Europe. Obtaining European-wide IP rights can be surprisingly cost-effective. Even with professional advice and assistance included, an EU-wide registration of a design can be obtained for around £1000 providing for years of monopoly rights across all of the EU – renewable for up to four further five-year periods. Your patent attorney or trade mark attorney will be able to advise you on how best to protect your IP outside the UK and what routes you might take to achieve that. Simon Haslam

The Italian woodworking giant SCM strengthened its position as a strategic partner for the German industry at Holz-Handwerk with a 35% growth in orders and 20% growth in new technicians.
Record turnout at the SCM stand during the Holz-Handwerk show A great success and a record number of visitors were reported at the SCM stand during the four-day Holz-Handwerk show in March, one of the the leading events for the woodworking and door and window processing industries, which attracted this year over 111,000 visitors. SCM’s white-and-blue, 1300m2 stand was widely acclaimed for its elegance and look, and was among the most popular and most crowded during the event, recoding an exponential increase in the number of visits by business professionals and wood enthusiasts, including many young students who were eager to discover the latest industry trends. The number of orders, contracts and new contacts has increased considerably over that of the 2016 fair, in line with the incredibly positive trend seen lately by SCM in the internationally very important market of Germany: a 35% increase in the orders portfolio during the last year alone, as Uwe Kosok, SCM Germany director, explained during the press meeting at the show. “SCM, which has been operating in Germany for 30 years, is now experiencing a solid growth in this country,” Uwe shared with the dozens of journalists who had arrived from all around the world. “The German woodworking and door and window industries are currently going through an exciting booming moment, and SCM, the world-leading producer for these industries since the 1960s, still leads the way thanks to its ability to offer the widest range of products, from machines designed for small carpentry shops to numerically controlled machining centres for processing both solid wood and panels.” SCM’s extraordinary growth in the German market has also led to an increase in hiring. “In 2017, we welcomed 20% more new technicians than in 2016,” Uwe said, “always intent on being fully qualified partners to our customers, not merely their suppliers.” At Holz-Handwerk, SCM held masterclasses around its crowd-pleaser Digital Hub, where it introduced the new Maestro Digital Systems, demonstrating that woodworking and door and window
FP295.indd 20
processing could become smarter, faster and easier, regardless of the operator’s knowhow, and always providing high quality, high versatility and high precision. The major draws were the 3D glasses for remote technical assistance, the Maestro Smartech, and the new Eye-M multi-touch operator panel, which is perfectly integrated with the SCM machines. Other popular machines among the dozens on view at the SCM stand were the machining centres for door and window frame manufacturers, especially the new Accord 42 FX and the Morbidelli all-in-one line of solutions, first and foremost among them the M100 and M200 drilling and milling machining centres and the P200 which also includes an edge-bander, a model without parallels in the world market. The Morbidelli p200 with the integrated Maestro edge module is one of the most high performance and easyto-use machining centres and the best solution to optimise routing, drilling and edgebanding processes. This module guarantees
unmatched performances and a considerable machining time reduction. Extremely compact, morbidelli p200 stands out for an unbeatable price-quality ratio. It represents the sequel of morbidelli’s All-In-One Technology range. Unique advantages on this new generation include a compact and reliable edgebanding unit which allows the edge application up to 84mm high for panels up to 80mm thickness. In addition, space optimisation in the factory improves thanks to the PRO-SPACE solution without external safety fences, optimising the company’s logistics and allowing the operator to move around the whole machining centre. Morbidelli’s p200 also stands out because of its flexibility and innovation thanks to HE-PODs, the 3D worktable and the alternate lifting of single workpieces during machining operations allows a single panel positioning and no subsequent displacement. This solution takes advantage of the whole working area with a cycle time reduced by 30%. Additional major attractions that appealed to the international public flooding to the Nuremberg show included the new range of presses introduced by SCM to fully meet the needs of all market sectors. Also included were the Superfici finishing solutions based on the use of a sprayer robot. scmgroup.com

A high-end interior design and furniture company says Cabinet Vision software plays a vital role in its recentlyintroduced automated manufacturing process, contributing to its growth.
Cabinet Vision saves time and labour for Langstaff-Ellis Langstaff-Ellis describes itself as a full design and manufacture house, splitting its work around 50:50 between end-user clients, and a range of designers, architects and developers, handling concept and design through to the installation of bespoke carpentry for a full home interior. Managing director Ed Birks says it works in a substantial number of high end residential and commercial properties, creating everything from kitchens, wine rooms, libraries, and dressing rooms, catering for a range of styles including ultra-modern minimalistic, and a more ornate look. The company, which has been in business around eight years, began investing in CNC machinery and software in 2016. “We felt there was a huge amount of ground to be gained by automating the processes. Our Homag beam saw and drilling and routing centre came first, but we found that programming each individual pattern was taking several days for a large project, so we brought Cabinet Vision in to overcome that.” The original 3D models are designed in SketchUp. Once the files are imported into Cabinet Vision, the specialist woodworking software then produces the component list
for everything that needs to be manufactured. “Cabinet Vision creates all the CNC files for our flat panel material and carcasses, internal components and drawer boxes, along with worktops where necessary, and cutlists for all the solid wood components.” He says the biggest challenge in the past has
been the amount of time and labour required to produce technical drawings and CNC files, and the associated risk of human error. He continues: “Cabinet Vision now produces all our technical drawings in half the time, and as the sales team also use it, our technical design costs have reduced significantly.”

The Cabinet Vision journey for each project begins after the quotation and specification. “By that time we already have the agreed materials and style, so the technical design department inputs the material data and hardware schedules … essentially setting up a jobfile, ensuring every element for the next stage has been imported.” The sales designers then produce a complete set of designs, which Ed Birks says are all fully technical, including hardware: “This means that only marginal tweaks are ever required when they go back to the technical design team, ahead of a final check before going into production. From the point of sign-off, layouts and technical drawings are produced for the workshop, and Cabinet Vision’s Screen-ToMachine module is used to transfer the NC code to the machine tools.” Langstaff-Ellis works closely with a company called Cutlist, which is located in the same building at Chinnor in Oxfordshire, and whose managing director is Ed Birks’ business partner, Alex Langstaff-Ellis. Cutlist provides a cutting and edging service, supplying cut-to-size panels and edgebanding for the woodworking, interior and furniture industries shipping throughout the UK. “The partnership began when Langstaff-Ellis had expanded to the point that it needed to increase output without larger premises or additional staff,” says Ed Birks. “Cutlist was created to serve this demand, and is now a thriving business in its own right, working with carpenters, joiners, cabinetmakers, interior designers, builders and developers.” Langstaff-Ellis optimises all its projects in Cabinet Vision and sends the cut file through to Cutlist, which then reoptimises the file before forwarding it to the Homag beam saw. “Langstaff-Ellis are currently developing a CNC flat pack service whereby their clients can submit a design of their own, and we’ll input this data into Cabinet Vision, finalise the
FP295.indd 25
technical design, and then machine the panel components for the project using their CNC router. This means the client can receive a bespoke flat-pack kit for their project,” says Ed Birks. In conclusion, he says: “Cabinet Vision brings all aspects of our operation together, and means we can produce our CNC files quickly and accurately.” cabinetvision.com langstaff-ellis.co.uk

Upgrading from a combination machine to separate and higher specification machines from Felder UK help bespoke furniture manufacturer Hide and Stitch improve accuracy and reduce waste – all of which saves valuable time for a growing business.
Hide and Stitch upgrades with the Felder Group
Hide and Stitch is a Cambridge-based company with over 25 years’ experience making bespoke furniture in leather, cowhide, wood and metal for individuals and commercial customers across the country. All of its work is created at the company’s fully equipped workshop where it is able to do leatherwork, upholstery, woodworking, metalwork or paint finishes on the impressive pieces it creates. In 2004, managing director David Motley was running his company from his garage at home when he decided to visit Felder’s in-house exhibition with a view to purchasing a horizontal mortiser. David comments: “I went to purchase a Felder FD 250 horizontal mortiser and whilst I was there I saw all the other machines and decided to buy a Felder CF 731 combination machine, which was great when we started out.” He continues: “As the company developed, the way we decided to move forward was to get a bigger unit and buy separate machines, so we bought the premises we are in today and upgraded to separate Format-4 machines.” Since then David has gone on to purchase 10 machines from the Felder Group including a Format-4 kappa 550 e-motion panel saw. Recommending some of the features David added to his saw, he says: “When you are working with manually-indexed woodworking
FP295.indd 28
machines there is more room for error, when you have a digital read-out on the outrigger and rip fence, its brilliant. When you are doing really accurate work, like mitre work, it has to be perfect or you are going to get a gap, so I would recommend upgrading to anyone. Within a month you will realise it is the right choice and it saves so much time, which is your biggest asset within your business. If you can save a minute here or 10 minutes there, over the course of a year that’s a lot of money.” Speaking about his experience of Felder UK,
David says: “I’ve not had a problem with one machine, I will buy a machine from Felder because I want the machine. Even though there isn’t anything I need, I still have a look to see what I can buy. The only reason I change machines is because I like to have a new model, it’s not down to the fact a machine wears out and they have such an amazing residual value as well. If you invest well at the start you will get your money out at the end.” 01908 635000 felder-group.co.uk

SOLID WOOD PROCESSING 31
Weinig, the technology leader in standard machines for planing and profiling, has created a new conventional moulder with its Powermat 700 Classic.
A classic from Weinig: the Powermat 700 Classic Configured as Weinig UK’s entry-level moulder, the Powermat 700 Classic has been developed as a reliable, affordable moulder specifically for small to medium sized business, and with a starting price of just £40,000, it is well priced to fit small business budgets. Based on Weinig’s highly successful Powermat 700, which provides the highest standards for four-sided processing with the most user-friendly moulder on the market, the Powermat 700 Classic offers the same German engineering, solid build quality and ease of use as the original moulder. Weinig’s extensive manufacturing experience has selected the tailored range of key options offered on the Classic, ensuring reliable day-to-day production of window components, stair components, mouldings and profiles. The Classic has different configurations for joinery or milling operations, and is equipped with 40mm spindles, an optional working width up to 260mm, and the Memory Plus control system making dimensional or profile changes possible from previously stored settings for perfect ad hoc repetition of products.
To date, 12 Powermat 700 Classic machines of five-head and six-head configuration have been recently installed across the UK, and Chilworth Timber Company in Oxfordshire has two of them. Rob Wilbore of Chilworth Timber says: “As a young dynamic business, we understand that technology plays an essential role in improving quality and productivity. It has always been a key strategy of ours to update our machinery on an ongoing basis. We have many years’ experience of Weinig machinery and it was a natural choice for us to continue our relationship. “We chose the Powermat 700 Classic for its compactness and ability to produce a finished product of equal standing to some of the bigger more expensive machines on the market. >>

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

Since its launch in 2012, Button-fix has built up a phenomenal following within the construction and joinery trades.
To design a great product, first find a worthy problem
UK shopfitting project
Button-fix Type 1 with marker
The Button-fix concept is simple but ingenious – durable nylon buttons are attached to the back of one panel and the mating fixes are attached to the other. Bring the panels together and slide until the Button-fixes click. Manufactured in the UK, Button-fix has an extensive network of distributors throughout the UK and overseas, including IronmongeryDirect, Häfele and SDS London. The Button-fix story began when joint creators, Tony Wills and Brian Watson developed Buttonfix in response to a customer specification for flush invisible mounts to fix washroom panels. Finding that the fasteners on the market were awkward to align and difficult to disengage for panel replacement, their design practice created and developed the Button-fix concept which offers a really quick, easy-to-use and reliably accurate way of attaching panels to walls and other surfaces. Tony Wills says: “Completing projects as quickly as possible, but without sacrificing quality is a constant challenge for those operating in the joinery and construction trades. Button-fix is gaining traction in the market because it helps tradesmen working in domestic or commercial settings to meet that challenge. “With Button-fix, all sorts of panels can be aligned and installed much more quickly and with a higher degree of accuracy than old-style
FP295.indd 34
fixings and connectors. What’s more, the fix is both incredibly strong and completely invisible – with no unsightly bolts or screws on show.” Part of the success of Button-fix is due to the fact that its use goes largely unnoticed. It is the
invisible fixing behind a truly diverse range of projects across many sectors – from furniture production, large retailers, landmark office receptions, hotels and housing. button-fix.com

Lansdowne Boards integrates OVVO to launch innovative Systomatic cabinet range South Africa-based Lansdowne Boards, distributors of premium quality manufactured components of wood-based panel products for the furniture, manufacturing and shopfitting industries has been on a mission for 20 years to remove the hassles of traditional carpentry while assuring its customer a premium product. Based in Cape Town, Lansdowne Boards has recently completely replaced traditional cam and dowel joints in its products with the OVVO connection system. Reaction to the recently-launched Systomatic cabinet range from industry professionals has been extraordinary, according to Gavin Higgins, managing director Lansdowne Boards. “We believe this assembly method facilitates flat pack cabinets finally being delivered that have the same strength and durability qualities that traditionally would have been associated with rigid cabinets, he says, highlighting also that the significantly reduced amount of time required to complete a project has more than doubled average customer capacity. Gavin also mentions the ease and convenience of working with the OVVO system as being a key selling feature that appeals highly to customers. The combination of flat-pack suitability and incredible ease of assembly for the end user afforded by integrating the OVVO connection

system has allowed Lansdowne Boards to make significant headway in the merchandise display sector for a number of reasons: assuring a quality product at an affordable price, while simultaneously eliminating the need for skilled assembly, coupled with minimisation of shipping and logistics costs as products
can be transported in flat-pack form, are key advantages that have driven increased demand from large retail chains across South Africa for merchandise display units that incorporate the OVVO connection system. ovvotech.com lansdowneboards.co.za

New Clip top Blumotion 155° wide angle, zero-protrusion hinge for added convenience Blum extends its comprehensive range of hinges with the new Clip top Blumotion 155° wide angle hinge; now available in the UK The new Clip top Blumotion 155° wide angle hinge by Blum offers enhanced convenience without taking up more space, as the tried and tested soft-close Blumotion has been integrated in the hinge arm. This means that now even cabinets with internal pull-outs, like the popular Space Tower larder solution, can use the award winning Clip top Blumotion technology. The use of all the existing storage in the unit, larder or wardrobe for example, means no more wasted space, and the wide angled opening access is much more convenient. Boss and hinge arm cover caps are symmetrical so they can be used both left and right, making assembly impressively easy. The new wide angle hinge offers the usual advantages you’ve come to expect from Blum such as a boss drilling depth of just 11.5mm and three-dimensional adjustment. There is also a deactivation ability for the Blumotion function should that be required. Its wide opening angle and zero protrusion make it perfect for cabinets with inner pull-outs, such as Space Tower. 01908 285700 blum.com

Titanium: past, present and future, all in one finish The Titanium story is one of ongoing success – introduced by Salice in 2011, Titanium has matured to establish itself as the defacto standard, distinctive and refined hinge, favoured by many architects and designers for its aesthetic appeal and functionality. Used for furniture hinges and now extended to numerous other products in the Salice range, Titanium integrates perfectly with most applications and is in total harmony with the latest trends; hightech materials that reproduce the natural effect of stones, metals and marbles and polished textures. In addition, Titanium’s finish delivers superb corrosive resistance which is considerably enhanced compared to the classic nickel-plated finish. Walter Gosling, branch director of Salice UK, says: “Since its first appearance, Titanium was the future, and today it continues to lead the way in terms of performance, reliability and sophisticated design. It is a shining example of the premium quality and performance that Salice are so renowned.” 01480 413831 saliceuk.co.uk
Eco-friendly solution for ergonomic workplaces A new Ketterer crank lifting system 3053 is now available from SD Products – the green solution for vertical adjustable worksurfaces. It allows for stepless adjustment of working heights from 590mm to 1250mm in less than no time with minimal required installation space, all without electricity. The new, purely mechanical crank lifting system from Ketterer allows a maximum lift of 660mm. Tables can be adjusted quickly, because each crank rotation creates 40mm of height difference. Thus any table height between 590 and 125 mm can quickly and easily be set with just a few turns. The new crank lifting system meets the European sit-stand norm DIN EN 527-1 for ergonomic workstations and even provides an individually ideal working height for taller people. The Ketterer lifting system runs extremely smoothly even under loads. Working surfaces can be easily and effortlessly adjusted up to a recommended load of a maximum of 40kg. The lifting system is selfbraking and holds a table in its fixed position up to a maximum table load of 120kg. Installation and adjustment of the table height takes place without electricity, only manpower is required. Here too, the smoothly running crank lifting system from Ketterer is extremely economical, because it can be easily operated without much effort. Ketterer meets the individual requirements of its customers during construction and assembly. The Ketterer system is faster and easier to install than comparable products on the market. In addition, it is modular. An advantage of this design. Is that vertical adjustable tables can be sent with minimum packing dimensions. The high-quality production and material selection makes the Ketterer crank lifting system extremely durable and suitable for everyday use. Gear

ratio, spindle pitch, and gas spring force are perfectly matched – spring assemblies or counterbalances, as used in comparable systems, are unnecessary. This is how Ketterer creates the sleek design and hence small packaging units of the fast crank lifting system. 01623 655 265 sdproducts.co.uk

New product introductions from Kite Packaging
Kite Packaging has become one of the UK’s largest packaging distributors and now boasts six sites around the UK which are fully integrated into its national and international supply chain. Among its latest introductions is its new Extra Heavy Duty Polythene Bags to market. This exclusive range can ensure security in the packing process thanks to the bags’ extremely strong, clear polythene composition. The bags are an invaluable addition to many working environments as they can support and protect heavier, sharper goods and for any companies who need to store weighty engineering parts or office goods, they offer the ideal solution. The thickness of the bags makes them perfect for warehouse operations and they provide the ultimate protection from dust, dirt and moisture. These extra strong clear plastic bags are available in a variety of 16 sizes in order to suit a wide range of requirements in the workplace and are manufactured from 100% virgin quality, high clarity, density polythene. The company continues to build on its diverse
FP295.indd 46
product range by adding four sizes to its everpopular Double Wall Box range and releasing a new range of Bubble Wrap retail packs. Due to the increase in demand for its Double Wall Boxes, the company has added four new sizes which will help cater for a wider variety of packaging needs in the industry giving customers a wider choice of boxes. Kite has also introduced two new boxes to its online store which comply with Royal Mail’s pricing in proportion. One is a Single Wall Carton and the other is a Double Wall Carton. Along with this strategic product extension, comes an exclusive range of Bubble Wrap Retail packs. These single packs of premium bubble wrap are suited to consumers and retailers as well as traditional business customers. Kite is also now providing businesses with new, cost-effective protection for ferrous metal and wooden exports providing long term protection with VCI and Kraft Union Paper. Kite’s latest protective additions are designed to assist in the long term protection of goods in transit and storage. Kite’s VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) paper
ensures ferrous metals can stay clean and rust free without leaving a greasy, waxy residue. Its advanced design eliminates the need for any cleaning of protected products before use and it significantly slows the process of corrosion. VCI paper is commonly used for the protection of metal parts in engineering, engines, drills and large iron items such as gates and railings. The recyclable properties of the paper means it can be treated as normal paper waste and Kite recommends businesses re-wrap the contents after two years to maximise the period of protection. Kite has also brought to market a range of Kraft Union paper rolls. This medium to heavy duty paper is the ideal protective agent for heavy components such as engineering or metal spare parts. It is also a very popular choice for lining wooden export cases and crates. The primary use for Kraft Union paper is driven by its moisture-resistant nature that can help to keep water out as the laminated Kraft paper and bitumen composition. kitepackaging.co.uk

Owners of prestigious new holiday lodges on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast can expect them to keep their pristine looks in the face of the area’s legendary weather and salt spray, thanks to a factory coating of Woodstain TP from the Mighton Ankerstuy Specialist range.
Luxury lodges create seaside showpiece for Mighton Ankerstuy
The lodges are the first in Siberian larch cladding to be installed at the park but, as Mighton technical coatings director, Graham Avery, says, they now form a superb shop window for other prospective owners to see them at their best. Mighton provided an audit of the factory finishing of the Siberian larch in association with Mike England Timber for Prestige Homeseeker Park & Leisure Homes, which manufactured the lodges for the Highland’s End Holiday Park, Bridport, owned by West Dorset Leisure Holidays. Mike England’s Colin Bennet explains the choice: “We wanted the natural look of larch but with a coating that would sit in the wood as well as on top, to provide maximum weather resistance. When the site is only 500m from the sea, it is prone to both rough weather and salt spray.” Graham Avery continues: “Ankerstuy coatings have been tried and tested all over the world, in every extreme of hot, cold, storm and drought. With such a prestigious location as this, the appearance of the timber is almost as crucial as its performance so the choice of coating is an important one.” He adds that the purchasers of the properties
FP295.indd 48
are also offered a maintenance package, ensuring their pristine appearance is maintained with a consistency of colour and materials used. Mighton chairman, Mike Derham, concludes: “These superb cabins are not just a showpiece to prospective buyers. “Prestige Homeseeker makes units like these
in a number of exterior finishes and, while this project involves only a few in the new Siberian larch, they will let everyone along the supply chain gauge what kind of demand there may be for them.” 01223 497097 mightonproducts.com

It’s always good to look back on products and understand their value in the modern world. Veneer is one such product which has a fascinating background. Lawcris tells the story…
Lawcris – a brief history of veneer Once upon a time – or so the story goes – in a land awash with desert, circa 3000 BC, there was a grand place called Egypt. Surrounded by landscapes of sand, wood was valued as a rare resource, often treasured higher than precious gems. Due to its scarcity, there was a necessity to utilise this valuable material in the most economical manner. The Egyptians began to cut thin sheets of wood to cover less precious surfaces, and so, veneer was born. Back then, veneers were handcrafted by cutting wood from the stem. This was an extremely demanding and time-consuming process. The production of a small quantity of veneer was often difficult to achieve in a set time frame. Even up to the Renaissance, this veneer method was only used for decorative purposes and commissioned for the wealthier class. During the Renaissance, especially in Italy, Germany, France and England, veneer styles were emerging. Intricate marquetry took shape and carpenters soon developed unique styles of their own. Entering the Industrial Revolution, furniture

production became automated. This transition permitted veneer production in large quantities and soon after, veneered furniture became a widely affordable option, dominating home interior design.
Expert in panel products, Lawcris, has over 30 years of experience in specialised veneered products. With close links to leading veneer mills in Europe, it offers one of the UK’s biggest selections – a colossal variety, including 14 different wood species and cuts, with different thicknesses, board sizes and core boards available. New techniques for veneer are constantly being explored and updated, meaning veneer is still very much relevant and kept at the forefront of furniture design. The popular fleece-backed veneer option, Easiwood, is a great example of this. Fleece backing allows for optimum flexibility, even more than paper-backed veneer, but without the disadvantage of glue leaching and air bubbles forming between the veneer and substrate. Great for furniture manufacturing and a whole range of other applications, veneer truly is a versatile material with an interesting and reliable past which cements its credibility. 0113 217 7177 lawcris.co.uk

Hesse Lignal says it has revolutionised the paint industry with the launch of its Fantastic Fill primer, a primer that can save up to 50% in coats and processing times.
Meet Fantastic Fill, Hesse Lignal’s remarkable new primer Fantastic Fill is a polyurethane isolation primer with excellent body and remarkable surface smoothness, which in parallel optimises sanding characteristics and shortens the sanding process. It is a thixotropic application-friendly primer that facilitates application on edges and vertical components without negatively impacting levelling on horizontal surfaces even on MDF. Thomas Feldmann, product manager for Hesse-Lignal, asks: “Why spend a fortune on primers which then require laborious sanding?” This was the question posed at the beginning of the development process. The Fantastic Fill sets new standards for its ability to stay on vertical surfaces – its filling power and levelling effect significantly reduces the need for sanding. The rapid intermediate drying time of two hours is a big step forward in the marketplace. What this means for finishing is significantly reduced processing times, allowing for greater production but without compromising on quality. It provides the perfect base for the Hesse Colour systems. The benefits of Fantastic Fill are one coat; 20% less sanding required; can be sanded after two hours; eight hour pot life; no thinning required; and an impressive filling power and levelling effect. Hesse strives to be at the forefront of wood coatings, and once more it claims to have surpassed standards for heat-, chemical- and scratch-resistance with Fantastic Fill. The lacquers are independently tested and certified, resulting in a system which meets the IMO standard for seagoing vessels as well as Class B1 fire certification to DIN 4102. In respect of the well-being of sprayers and

end users, Hesse’s Fantastic Fill formulation is free of wood preservatives, toxic heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers and formaldehyde. Following the successful launch of Fantastic Fill in Europe, Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute the product in the UK. After sterling service, the venerable 25-year-old Hoffmann MU-2 routing machine is being relaunched to suit today’s and tommorrow’s industrial needs.
Ingenious and smart As a multi-functional and economical construction connector for the assembly of two parts, the Hoffmann Key itself was a brilliant discovery – so too was the development of the basic Hoffmann MU-2 routing machine. Now, after almost a quarter of a century in service, it is being relaunched – enter the new MU-3. This thoroughly revised machine has been reworked, updated and adapted to suit the current and future needs of the industry, with many new additional features. Ergonomic, user-friendly as well as up-to-date, the new MU-3 is available in four versions. MU-3 Basic version for the quick and precise routing of dovetail slots. MU-3 D Digital version, with electronic two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. It is ideal for high precision work. MU-3 P Pneumatic version for series production and high throughput. Pneumatic workpiece clamping and controlled router feed. The MU-3 P
is operated by foot-pedal control. MU-3 PD Pneumatic/Digital version – the top machine with the highest operating comfort for a wide range of requirements. Functional features are similar to MU-3 P with a digital two-axis display for the adjustable routing depth as well as the positioning of the centre fence for the routed slot location. The MU-3 and the MU-3 D have a workpiece thickness capacity of up
to 140mm – in the versions MU-3 P and MU-3 PD this increases to 170mm. Infinitely adjustable routing depths up to 95mm and protection against break-through of the finished surface. Also new is the two-function hand lever for even faster machine cycles when routing smaller workpieces. The scale tapes in the table and now also in the rear fences assist the quick and precise positioning of the workpieces. All versions of the new MU-3 routing machine are equipped with a motor carriage which has vernier adjustment for the fine setting of the router cutter and hence the tension of the joint. As an option there are extension tables for the support of longer
workpieces as per customer requirements. Furthermore there is a laser line for positioning the workpiece to pencil marks. Good to know, even more so nowadays, that the new cutting edge MU-3 routing machine is 100% Made in Germany. The new Hoffmann MU-3 is available for delivery usually ex-stock. The MU-3 and MU-3 D with all accessories as well as the MU-3 PD has been the main focus of attention at several trade shows and the customer response has been very satisfying. 01524 841500 hoffmann-uk.com
Small in size but huge in application.
The Hoffmann W-0 – the latest key size from Hoffmann The world of creative design is constantly demanding finer and more delicate wood profiles. These finer details are the highlights of modern times and design. These profiles are finer and more discreet, especially in the field of furniture and interior design. But that means, the machining processes for these workpieces will be much more difficult – or a corner joint of such profiles almost impossible ... that was until the new Hoffmann W-0 Key arrived. The new Hoffmann Key W-0, is approximately 1/3 smaller than its legendary and proven key size, W-1. The W-0 now opens a completely new field of application throughout the woodworking industry. With

a cross sectional size of just 3.3 x 4.4mm it will draw together even the smallest of frame profiles – 7mm upwards – with startling strength. Using single or multiple keys, extremely narrow and very high profiles can be jointed. The new W-0 Hoffmann keys are now available in lengths of 10-, 22- and 35mm. Hoffmann Keys are now available in five standard sizes in terms of cross section. Within each cross sectional size, different lengths are available. Thus, for each application, the best possible secure strength is established, to correspond with the expected tension or pressure loads on a joint and hence is totally reliable.

Since the addition of its Interior and Specialist coatings to the already-established Exterior paints range, the Mighton Ankerstuy collection continues to attract interest from new and existing customers, along with rave reviews.
Bespoke kitchen company achieves first-class finish with Mighton Ankerstuy Fife-based, The Painted Kitchen started using Mighton’s primers and interior top coats in September 2017, after a local spray shop recommended the brand, and haven’t looked back since. Director Terry Turpie explains: “They couldn’t talk highly enough about the Mighton range. After such a glowing review we decided to get in touch with Mighton to try it out for ourselves and were certainly not disappointed. We specialise in bespoke and hand-painted kitchens where only the best materials will suffice, and this is where the Mighton range fits in perfectly. “We pride ourselves on the feedback we receive from customers, and to ensure we retain the highest standard of customer satisfaction, we source the best quality materials and dedicate many hours to hand-crafting our offering. “On every kitchen job we use the Mighton primer, which we spray and de-nib between coats here in our own workshop booth. Once the kitchen is installed it is then followed up with two coats of the interior top coat which has a slight sheen to it and leaves our cabinets with a perfect finish. “Even our customers comment on the finish; believing the cabinets have been completely finished on site – that’s how good the result really is! The topcoat colour-matching service from Mighton really is superb and

Mighton Ankerstuy is the only paints and coatings range we will use on our bespoke kitchens now.” Along with The Painted Kitchen, Mighton has recently seen an upsurge in new customers following the company’s investment in its Mighton Ankerstuy range, including the launch of a new dedicated paint and stain catalogue showing the much-extended offering. With an added palette of exterior colours and the new addition of its Interior and Specialist coatings, Mighton has more than trebled the size of the Ankerstuy range. As well as colour charts of all product types and finish options, the 48-page catalogue now includes far greater technical and usage information, plus more details on the key products in the range. Mighton’s chairman Mike Derham comments: “With 35 years’ experience between them, Terry and his business partner Gavin Robertson have quickly grown The Painted Kitchen to become a leading provider of bespoke cabinets since the company was launched just 12 months ago. We are pleased to have helped them achieve such high quality results for their customers through the use of our Mighton Ankerstuy range and colour matching service.” 01223 497097 mightonproducts.com

Thanks to the ultra-efficient extraction system installed by Dust Control Systems (DCS), employees at Aquapac have an enviably-clean working environment – even with high-speed woodworking machines in continual operation.
DCS optimises extraction at Aquapac ATEX-approved 40,000m3/hr capacity NFKZ3000 filter unit at Aquapac – supplied and installed by Dust Control Systems
Dust Control Systems has supplied and maintained dust extraction plant for Scottish furniture manufacturer, Aquapac, for over 15 years and, when the decision was made to relocate the business from Glasgow to Cumbernauld, managing director Stephen Connachan had no hesitation in asking DCS sales director Melvyn Bathgate to survey the new premises and put forward proposals for design and installation of a new dust extraction system. Established in 1995, Aquapac is geared to panel production, and manufactures readyto-assemble, flat-pack furniture for a growing customer base that extends throughout the UK and Europe, and as far afield as North America, Australia and New Zealand. In its early days, the company specialised in the manufacture of bespoke cabinetry for the pet industry and today, although Aquapac also produces wooden panel furniture products for hotels, offices and student accommodation, a
FP295.indd 56
large part of the business is derived from the manufacture and export of bespoke aquarium and vivarium cabinets. Investing in the Cumbernauld property has provided Aquapac with a workspace of around 50,000ft2 – ample space for its arsenal of high speed machinery; including a beam saw, three edgebanders and three CNC machining centres. The facility also provides space for storage of raw materials and a packing line where sets of panels and associated fittings are boxed and palletised ready for dispatch. And, with plans to build turnover through continued development of the niche pet furniture market, as well as gaining a growing share of the domestic furniture market, the company also expects to increase staffing levels appreciably over the next couple of years. Although Aquapac operates a double-shift system, with panels in continuous production, loading and off-loading panels, switching machining programs and other inevitable
pauses in the manufacturing cycle, means that different machines are constantly coming on- or off-line. Traditionally, an extraction system will run at full power from the start to the end of the day; constantly extracting from machines whether they are in use or not. To optimise extraction efficiency, and maximise energy savings for Aquapac, the DCS proposal included the installation of an Ecogate extraction-on-demand system. With hundreds of installations in operation around the world, the proven Ecogate technology controls power output to the fan – automatically adjusting fan speed, in real time, to exactly match the factory’s changing extraction requirements throughout the working day and, when all machines are powered down at the end of the day, Ecogate automatically shuts down the extraction system. At Aquapac, the extraction fan is powered by a 75kW direct drive motor with a maximum speed

protected by a fire damper with fusible link and micro-switch. In addition, and as recommended by ATEX equipment regulations, a CARZ back pressure valve protects the factory and its occupants from the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling upstream in the ductwork, and back into the building, in the event of an explosion occurring in the filter unit. “At Dust Control Systems we will not compromise on safety,” says Melvyn Bathgate, “and CARZ explosion isolation valves are always included in our system designs.” 0800 040 7116 DCSlimited.co.uk
Motorised Ecogate blast gates, integrated into the FastClip ductwork system, operate automatically as individual machines come on- or offline and signal the Ecogate PowerMASTER unit to adjust the fan speed accordingly; optimising extraction and maximising energy savings
of 1500rpm. Operating the fan at full power, for five days a week, would consume in excess of 300,000kW of electricity in 12 months. “By installing Ecogate technology, DCS have calculated that our energy usage will be less than half of that,” comments Stephen Connachan, “and the savings generated will be sufficient to recoup our outlay on the system in less than two years – then those savings just continue for the lifetime of the system.” Filtering the dust-laden air is an externallysited NFKZ3000 chain filter, with patented antistatic superbag filter media; integrated regeneration fans provide reverse air cleaning of the filter bags. This compact, cost-efficient modular unit is manufactured from galvanised steel, is virtually maintenance-free, and has the capacity to filter an air volume of around 40,000m3/hr. The unit comprises one inlet module and five filter modules, and filtered waste dropping to the base of the hopper section is continually directed by a chain and flight conveyor towards the rotary valve. From here it is discharged, pressure-free, into a closed-loop transfer system, and a 15kW waste transfer fan delivers the waste to an adjacent sealed collection skip. The NFKZ3000 filter unit is ATEX-approved and ideally suited to handling the large volumes of waste dust material typically generated in panel manufacturing environments. From each clean air outlet on the filter unit, the

warm discharged air can be re-directed into the factory during colder weather, or extracted to atmosphere when not required. Airflow direction is controlled by a manuallyoperated gate and the return air system is

BCF and BASA seminar helps industry prepare for Brexit at the halfway mark In April, the British Coatings Federation (BCF) and the British Adhesives and Sealants Association (BASA) joined forces to host a Halfway to Brexit seminar at the Doubletree by Hilton in Nottingham to highlight the economic and political implications of Brexit on the global coatings and adhesives industries. The seminar was attended by over 80 delegates, including representatives from both industries, the press and several Government officials. The seminar marked the halfway point to Brexit, and with the October deadline for an agreement between the UK and the EU looming, speakers and attendees highlighted the need to have a good deal for industry, which works both for the UK and European business community. Speakers Richard Rumbelow (EEF) and Julie Girling, MEP, opened the seminar with a compelling look at the politics of Brexit and the impact it could have for chemical-using industries. Ms. Girling gave a unique insight into negotiations as a working MEP, and the repercussions on industry of the UK not staying within the EU chemicals regulatory framework. Peter Smith from CEFIC highlighted the significant contribution the UK chemicals industry had made towards REACH, whilst Jean-Marc Barki (FEICA) and Martin Engelmann (VdL) gave overviews of how Brexit will affect the coatings and adhesives industries in their countries and the EU, and all three participated in a panel discussion taking questions from the audience. A second panel discussion featured members of BCF and BASA including U-POL, Centre Colours, Jotun Paints, FSi, Hodgson Sealants and BASF. Elizabeth Shepherd (Eversheds Sutherland) and Richard Collin (BSI Group) also contributed with views on how Brexit might impact their business, standards and compliance and how they are working to prepare for March 2019. Ellen Daniels, head of public affairs and policy at the BCF comment: “As time progresses with the Brexit negotiations, more will become known with regard to the impact of Brexit, but until then the talks and discussions held at the seminar left delegates with food for thought in preparation for businesses within our sector. Many of our European colleagues highlighted that the UK is seen as one of the most pragmatic voices in the EU relating to chemical regulations, and the loss of the UK from the bloc will be felt across the Continent.” Lorna Williams, secretary of BASA said: “For BCF and BASA members, Brexit is hugely important, given the effects it could have on the UK industry as well as the global reach

of trade. A key theme that emerged was to communicate regularly with supply chains, particularly as our industries have a significant amount of trade with the EU, both import and export. Our European speakers highlighted that Brexit is not just contained to the UK and has
its impact that will be felt by the EU economies. The seminar has provided a better picture for delegates of the key negotiating deadlines for the UK’s departure from the EU and we heard about some of the preventative measures that could be put in place to counteract some of the potentially negative impacts on businesses.”

AXYZ highlights importance of correct router tool selection Good quality routing and cutting tools are essential in order to get the best out of any CNC router. Purchasing cheaper but invariably inferior quality alternatives often proves a false economy, leading to a sub-standard finish, a significant decrease in tool life and a corresponding increase in material wastage. The most common reasons for tool failure include selecting the wrong tool for the material to be processed, using a tool well past its predicted lifespan, failure to use an appropriate coolant or lubricant and not changing toolholding devices such as collets within the recommended time scale. Tooling is a continually developing area of routing/cutting technology, fuelled by the availability of new and frequently more complex materials, coatings and geometries and the need to process widely differing materials to accommodate multiple applications. As a leading supplier of high-performance routing and cutting systems, AXYZ International claims to have comprehensively addressed these requirements via its 24/7 online CNCRoutershop division. This regularly updated facility provides both general-purpose and specialist tools that support not only machines in the extensive AXYZ International portfolio but also those from virtually any other supplier regardless of make or country of origin. The choice of tools and accessories available includes not only routing/cutting devices but
also blades for oscillating, tangential and dragknife cutters, collets and cones, accessories such as cutting fluids and a wide range of spare parts. These are constantly supplemented with new devices to further extend the performance capabilities of CNC routers. New devices currently being tested include a high-power routing spindle that is said to represent a major advancement in high-speed routing/cutting technology by providing twice the power and speed of a standard spindle and a kiss-cut knife-cutting tool that will further extend the capabilities of CNC routers by enabling a much wider range of materials to be processed. Subject to the success of these product tests, both of these devices will be available in the near future. A typical example of the specialist tools supplied by AXYZ International is the Marathon Compression Tool. Designed for use on solid and particle woods and laminates, it features an advanced cutting geometry and a special coating to protect the cut edge of the materials being processed from the high temperatures generated during the routing/cutting cycle. The combined upwards and downwards
spiral geometry of the Marathon Compression Tool ensures a clean and perfect finish to the top and bottom surfaces of the materials being processed, a function that is of special significance if chipping of double-sided laminates is to be avoided or when using natural woods where edge-finishing might prove problematical if alternative standard spiral tools are used. 01952 291600 axyz.com cncroutershop.com

When the heat is on Where end use involves hot or steamy conditions, it’s clear there is nothing to beat a PUR adhesive for prevention of water ingress, or peeling of edgebanded panels. As a smaller manufacturer not running its edgebander continuously – even though it makes sense to switch from EVA for some products – people have probably been put off the idea of using PUR because of the unavoidable clean-down procedure after use. At Holz-Handwerk, the adhesive specialist, Kleiberit, showed it is firmly on the manufacturer’s side by introducing an innovative polyurethane formulation which canbe used, left in the melting pot, and reused up to 24 hours later. “Companies are becoming more quality conscious,” comments Kleiberit’s Wolfgang Hormuth on the Holz-Handwerk stand. “We are seeing many companies make the first step from using cost-effective EVA products to polyolefin products because some polyolefin products provide a higher heat stability compared with EVAs. We are introducing two new polyolefin co-polymers here at HolzHandwerk that offer a step up from EVAs in terms of performance. “However, there is no substitute for a PUR adhesive, and this is where we have been doing a lot of development. We know there is resistance in the market to PUR, especially among smaller users. For this reason, we have formulated a brand new PUR for this very important segment of the market because we want to help small and midsize companies gain benefit from the increased product quality it provides. “Our newest offer in the polyurethane area is 707.6.40, a natural coloured PUR, and 707.6.41, a white PUR. What’s different about them? This new PUR allows the manufacturer to
FP295.indd 64
keep it in the melting pot for up to 24 hours without having to clean either the rollers, or the melting pot. If a small- or medium-size company consumes only half of the glue in the melting pot, they can switch off the machine after a couple of hours use without cleaning or dumping the remaining adhesive. A couple of hours later, or even the next day, they can switch on the machine and run it exactly as they did before. The glue will perform just the same. “The nice part of this product is, despite its good stability in the melting pot, after the application and after the processing, once it is cross-linked it will have the same performance as standard PUR. That means heat stability of up to 150°C and very good water and steam resistance. It will perform exactly like you expect of a PUR, so you can almost run the handling like a thermoplastic product but still enjoy the properties of a polyurethane product.” Kleiberit 707.6.40 and the white version, Kleiberit 707.6.41, promise excellent green strength with no stringing as well as very good temperature resistance, running stability and final strength. Moisture-, water- and steam
resistance are exactly as you would expect of a polyurethane product that bonds the edge of the substrate. Both can be used with polyester edges, melamine resin edges, PVC, PP and ABS edges with prepared backing, non-compacted resin paper edges, solid lippings and veneer edges. “We think it’s a very good step to enable smallto midsize-companies to run PUR without it having a significant negative impact on their machine if they forget the cleaning,” adds Wolfgang. “Up to 24 hours, you can run the machine with no cleaning at all, but afterwards, it is recommended that it is cleaned. Like any other PUR, after 24 hours it will start to cross link. However, you can extend that period. If you run it one day, run it the next day within 24 hours.” In cost terms, Kleiberit 707.6.40 and 707.6.41 sit within the range of a standard polyurethane glue, so you get all the advantages – plus a significant time benefit. It’s also available in a range of packaging options that’s designed for smaller users. 01530 836699 kleiberit.com/en/home/

Investment in wood waste heaters saves company money on heating and waste disposal A UK building and timber merchant has purchased two wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology (WWT) to save money on heating and waste disposal bills. Bolt Building Supplies is an independent builders’ and timber merchant with specialist roof truss manufacturing that has been trading since 1977 and operates from an eight-acre site in Halstead, Essex. The business joined the Harlow Brothers group of merchants in 2015, so when Bolt Building Supplies decided to purchase wood waste heaters the team immediately contacted WWT which had supplied Harlow Brothers with several wood waste heaters over the years. Simon Burgess, MD of Bolt Building Supplies says: “Once we decided we needed to replace our inefficient gas heating with wood waste heaters we contacted WWT and arranged a site survey. The team at WWT was really helpful and we purchased a WT15 for our roof truss factory and a WT5 for the Ibeam factory area. We’re really pleased with the heaters and excited about how much money they’re going to save us on heating and the waste disposal of our timber offcuts.”
Kurt Cockroft, MD at WWT says: “Most of our sales come from the good reputation our heaters have in the market, with every heater
ever sold still being in operation today. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to help Bolt Building Supplies save money on its business running costs.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions has helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, WWT is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 woodwastetechnology.com grossuk.co.uk putzmaus.co.uk

Automation is a hot topic for 2018 within the woodworking industry and Homag’s latest digital innovations and announcements are set to make a mark. With its motto, ‘YOUR SOLUTION’, Homag has created a range of automated solutions based around its customers and their individual production requirements.
Homag’s latest digital innovations bringing automation to all workshops Recognising that all workshops need flexible and efficient solutions, Homag’s machinery range has been developed to shorten throughput times, maximise stock and board usage and lower production costs. With a range beginning at entry level and leading up to industrial-sized machines, even the smallest of manufacturers can have access to the latest automated solutions to ensure they remain competitive. New Homag product names: simple and easy to understand Making history at Holz-Handwerk 2018, Homag unveiled its updated brand identity to the woodworking industry along with a new product structure and modern machine re-design. The new Homag brand identity not only consists of a new company logo but also a complete restructure, branding and design of all its machinery. After initially combining all of the Homag Group brand names under one single ‘Homag’ name in spring 2017, Homag is continuing its focus on making its machinery range straightforward for all. Homag has now restructured its product names so that each machine clearly states its function. For example, Homag edgebanding machines are now under the name EDGETEQ and machines using saw technology are all labelled as SAWTEQ. The new machine names will ensure that Homag’s product range is consistent for both the sales team and the customer.
The new machine generation from Homag As well as a new name structure, Homag’s machinery range has a fresh new look. The modern machinery design reflects the company’s transition with the digital generation. The design features a crisp white machine body with a new dark grey Homag logo with blue accents. Whilst the outside of the machines have had a modern uplift, the outstanding technology which has made Homag a pioneer in the woodworking industry is better than ever. Design meets digital – a new technology era Homag’s focus for 2018 onwards is based around Industry 4.0 and the digitalisation of technology to bring the benefits of automated solutions to all trade and manufacturing companies. This digital focus has seen Homag build upon its catalogue of innovative machinery by designing solutions which are even more intuitive and unique for users. At the heart of Homag’s digital solutions is tapio, the digital platform launched to make networked production even more accessible to all workshops. It provides live machine status updates across the whole production facility and not just for Homag machines. The data tapio produces allows companies to monitor their entire production process, ensuring they are maximising their equipment’s performance at all times. It also reminds the operator when future maintenance needs to be facilitated or sends a
warning when a critical value exceeds or falls below a certain level. This reduces any possible downtime and ensures peak production times are not compromised. Accessible through an app on a mobile phone, tablet or even smart watch, tapio is suitable for the small workshop right up to global corporations. Simon Brooks, managing director at Homag UK concludes: “The digitalisation of production is a big topic driving Homag forward this year. Providing innovative solutions for the customer has always been at the forefront of our developments and the recent launch of tapio, our digital production platform, really emphasises this. “We are set on making digital automated solutions more accessible to customers than ever before, whether they are an entry level or industrial sized workshop. Our focus is to find a personalised solution to each individual’s production challenges as Homag continues to move forward with our customers. Not only do we pride ourselves on being able to find the right solution for each customer, but also on offering ongoing support as a knowledgeable and reliable partner to assist with any production queries.” For a demonstration of any Homag machinery or to receive further product information, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. homag-uk.co.uk

As a furniture manufacturer, there is an urgent need for additional machinery to keep pace with orders, but the lead times for building new equipment sometimes just don’t fit with your production demands. What can be done?
When time is of the essence
Juggling availability and the demands of production is often a balancing act, and one that has brought many furniture producers to the door of used machinery specialist, Ferwood UK, including many of the UK’s largest manufacturers. With an experienced team, skilled engineers and a global machinery inventory at its fingertips, Ferwood UK is able to come up with a credible, timely solution when suppliers of new machinery have been unable to offer production slots, or meet budget requirements. “We’re not talkers, we’re listeners,” explains John Wilson, managing director of Ferwood UK. “No two companies are the same, so unless we can hear what our customers want, we will never be able to understand their needs or solve their production problems. It’s our job to listen to our customers’ requirements, absorb their issues and transfer these into a viable solution for their business.” To do this, Ferwood sources and reconditions machinery from leading woodworking machinery manufacturers including Homag, Biesse, SCM and IMA. As well as its impressive 10,000ft2 Leedsbased premises, which plays host to as many as 15 or 20 machines at a time, the company has access to a vast global inventory through its worldwide subsidiaries. And, for customers looking for something specific, Ferwood’s large sales network can go the extra mile to source a machine – or even a complete production line – that ticks all the boxes. For customers keen to incorporate the latest technology into production lines, Ferwood has a solution for that, too. John explains: “Thanks to our skilled engineers, we have the ability to modify most of the machines we have in stock. For example we’re seeing a continual trend for PU and hot air technology on edgebanders.
FP295.indd 70
“This facility is not always available on machines over a certain age, but we are easily able to solve this by offering the option of retrofitting this bonding technology onto our reconditioned machines. This is a huge selling point for us and allows our customers to have the latest technology at a fraction of the cost of buying it on a brand new machine.” It’s not just edgebanders that Ferwood can bring up to date. Machines from beam saws to CNC machining centres and drilling lines to finishing systems can be modified to suit the customer’s specific requirements– and it’s likely to be delivered a lot sooner, and for a lot less than specifying new. It’s often said that to fully appreciate
something, it’s crucial to understand the process it goes through – and Ferwood UK believes the same can be said when selling reconditioned machinery. “We actively encourage our customers to visit our headquarters in Pollenzo, Italy, and to see the lengths we go to in order to recondition our machinery range first hand as for many, only seeing is believing. This dedication and attention to detail gives us the confidence to offer a six months parts and labour warranty on Ferwood approved machines. “As part of the process of ensuring our machinery fits its intended purpose we encourage our customers to send us their sample materials, glues, tooling etc in order for us to recreate their products on a test run prior to dispatch. It’s a great way of testing the machine and it shows the customer the exact results they can expect from one of our reconditioned machines. Once the machine is complete, we arrange the logistics and get it shipped directly to you.” John adds: “For us, it’s not about trying to fit a square cog into a circular hole. We have the advantage of selling a wide range of machinery from the very best manufacturers. Solutions are not always straightforward, but we’re confident that with our experience in the sector and our comprehensive inventory, we can work with you to find the right machine to fit your business.” 01132 866689 ferwoodmachinery.co.uk Twitter – WoodMacSol

A good basis for further growth in 2018 “It has not been an easy year for Catas, but we have been able to react and implement a series of measures to maintain the high level of all our activities; and the result at the end of the year has been really impressive.” Bernardino Ceccarelli, president of Catas, the Italian furniture and wood industry testing, certification and research business, smiles while observing the data related to the activity carried out in the past year ended a few weeks ago. Twelve months that had not started under the best auspices, in light of the fire that at the end of 2016 destroyed the furniture testing laboratory in San Giovanni al Natisone, that led to the thinking that it would be a very difficult year: everything indicated that it would be even a suffering year but, the cohesion of the entire Catas team and the measures put in place to manage the emergency have allowed to close 2017 in a very positive way. “A dynamism that has surprise us first of all allowing us to realise
how much Catas can count on a network of relationships that have proved to be fundamental in this last twelve months,” says Bernardino. In fact, in 2017, Catas did something like 43,785 tests, a record, compared to 43,205 of the previous year. A total of 146 different products have been certified for woodderived panels (formaldehyde emission), coating systems for exterior wood, coating systems for domestic furniture, glue-lam beams for window profiles, and playgrounds. All such activities have been possible thanks to the creation, in few months, of a new laboratory of over 2000m2 for furniture testing. Moreover, it has been fundamental the role of the Catas Brianza laboratories should be further enhanced and equipped with new testing equipment. In order to guarantee an appropriate service to its customers, five new technicians have been employed during

2017, bringing the total of Catas personnel to 51 people. A positive balance is also recorded for Catas Engineering, being the division providing test equipment for components, seating, tables, beds and storage units, as well as turnkey laboratory projects. The activity includes, of course, the training of technicians in charge of managing these divisions, an activity that in year 2017 was further consolidated with requests received from both Italy and abroad. During the year, Catas proposed numerous training opportunities – perhaps the activity of the institute that showed the most dynamic trend, and one that also demonstrates how the wood and furniture sectors are facing a new international economic scenario. One of the direct consequences is the increasing need of knowledge. In the San Giovanni al Natisone and Lissone offices, 43 training events were organised, on average three per month – seminars, workshops, webinars and courses for individual companies on specific subjects. In particular the latter shows a rapidly growing demand that indicates the need of tailored events with a specific focus on individual companies. In all, over 260 hours of training were provided to around 600 users. “All this,” continues Bernardino, “has allowed us to reach a good turnover that we estimate is even higher than that of 2016. The most important part of the tests (over 95%) comes from our reference sector (wood- furniture) within which the tests on surfaces, chemical analyses and tests on the finished product represent the lion’s share.” It is interesting to note that the partial decrease of the tests on furniture at the San Giovanni site, which was affected by the alreadymentioned fire at the end of 2016, was offset by the strong growth of the Lissone site. This team game by the Brianza headquarters was fundamental in absorbing the needs of the furniture-tests laboratory of San Giovanni and further developing its specific role inside the reference territory. “And once again it does not surprise us how great is the
18/04/2018 14:16
number of tests commissioned by foreign companies,” adds Bernardino, “which now exceeds the 40% of the total”. Some data for the most curious: 80% of Catas’ activities in Italy are concentrated in Veneto, FriuliVenezia Giulia and Lombardia regions; in first place, in order, the provinces of Udine, Treviso, Milan, Pordenone, Vicenza and Mantova. Looking across the border, 76% of the tests are carried out for European companies, 16% for Asia, 5% for America and 3% for Africa. The top ten countries, as best customers, shows the following ranking Poland, Romania, China, Slovakia, Portugal, Germany, Lithuania, Russia, United Kingdom and Belarus. Marketing activities have also increased, which have led Catas to enhance its visibility in the reference markets: “For some years we have decided to invest more on this side, proposing us with greater evidence both in our traditional sectors but looking also for new opportunities”, was the comment of Franco Bulian, deputy director of Catas responsible for marketing and communication activities. “We have greatly strengthened our training activities and resumed our active participation in trade fairs of primary importance for the wood-furniture supply chain, such as Sicam in Pordenone and Xylexpo in Milan; we have also completely renewed our website to make it a simple, useful and practical tool, enriching our communication processes both to customers and partners, through monthly newsletters, and also to the Italian and international press.” “The year started under the best auspices”, confirms Andrea Giavon, director of the institute. “We are proceeding well with the construction of the new furnituretest laboratory, which will be ready after the summer of year 2019: it will be the best way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Catas which was founded in 1969. “Meanwhile, every day we are enriching our offer, guaranteeing concrete services to companies and demonstrating on the ground the many skills acquired over the years.” catas.com

Sharps Bedrooms improve with Maxoptra Since introducing a new technology to automate the routing and scheduling of its delivery fleet, Sharps Bedrooms has realised around 600 man hour savings and significantly reduced the need for third party transport contractors, saving £12,000 a year. The cloudbased Maxoptra software, which is used by a centralised team supporting 400 Sharps installers nationwide, is also helping to boost customer service. With around 650 installations of bespoke fitted bedrooms and home office solutions every week, the West Midlands-based support team receives around 65 calls per day requesting advice, additional parts or equipment. 90% of requests require a call out with the vast majority of jobs fulfilled the following day. “Our bespoke fitted furniture is designed to exactly meet customers’ requirements in terms of design, functionality and fit, so following a home design visit and detailed technical survey, the installers cut and fit onsite,” comments Andy Turner, national installer support manager. “It is therefore possible that additional equipment or parts may be required.” If support is required, a call is placed by the installer between 7am-noon. Requests
are logged and communicated to the factory or warehouse to confirm availability. Once confirmed, the planning team uses Maxoptra to prepare routes, schedules and delivery manifests for the support team, which are communicated directly to Android devices. “Prior to the introduction of Maxoptra a year ago the planning of deliveries took about three hours every day,” continued Andy. “This has now been dramatically reduced to just half an hour with a record set at 10 minutes. This resource, 600 man hours in the first year alone, has been reinvested in other areas of the business. In addition, due to the effectiveness of Maxoptra’s planning algorithms, we have been able to reduce our reliance on third party transport, resulting in a saving around £12,000 per annum.”
Armed with optimised routes, Sharps drivers are more efficient and productive and real time traffic alerts help keep them on schedule whilst on the road. Customers are kept informed with automated ETA notifications, which has in turn resulted in a drop in the number of calls requesting updates, and installer time is better utilised as they are not having to wait around for deliveries to arrive. Once on site, the Maxoptra POD app, which captures a signature from the installer or customer confirming delivery and transmits it, in real time, back to the office, is further boosting operational efficiencies. maxoptra.com
Mighton adds quick-dry range for factory finishers Mighton has answered the call from joiners and factory coaters with the creation of a quick-drying exterior paint with the potential to be touch-dry for recoating in as little as 30 minutes in ideal conditions. The water-based formulation, named Modifica Quick Dry – or Modifica QD – is suitable for all exterior wood types including Accoya, and offers the same no-compromise performance and finish as all other Mighton Ankerstuy coatings. It was designed in response to growing demand for a quick-drying finish, especially among factory finishers. Mighton technical coatings director, Graham Avery, explains: “The move towards production line manufacture and factory finishing is still growing at apace and more and more joiners told us they needed quicker drying paints to speed up their processes. “We worked very hard with our partners at Ankerstuy to develop a formulation that would live up to their demands without compromising on performance or finish. “The result is a coating with a typical touchdry time of as little as 30 minutes where the
FP295.indd 73
correct recommended drying conditions are implemented. “This not only means faster and more efficient throughput for anyone who is factory processing, but it’s also a great boost for any other joiner who is in a hurry; whether it’s to recoat, mask an edge for two toning or simply get a finished piece ready to take to site.” Modifica QD is available in all the same opaque colours that are offered with other exterior paints in the Mighton Ankerstuy range. Its introduction comes shortly after the company launched its new and extended paints and stains range with three times the colour choices as well as the addition of Interior and Specialist coatings. Mighton chairman, Mike Derham, says: “We are always ready to listen to what joiners and coaters want from a paint to help them do the best job they can, as cost-effectively as they can. This is the thinking that led to the creation of Modifica QD and we are sure it will give them exactly what they want.” 01223 497097 mightonproducts.com
