Comment Italy’s proud machinery manufacturing and component sector has been under considerable pressure for some time, but in recent years, that tide has begun to turn and the industry is on the up, things are much more positive and John Legg recent financial results appear to show Editorial director increased demand both domestically and overseas for many of its businesses. So I hoped that a trip to Milan to the biennial Xylexpo fair would show more signs, for Italian firms and for the industry at large, that this positive turn of events would continue. And it was certainly the case – the event had that buzz, perhaps not on full throttle just yet, but it felt good. The atmosphere, the exhibitors, the technology, the ideas – all seemed really positive for the visitors. Important events such at Xylexpo, HolzHandwerk and Ligna are clear bell-weathers as to the underlying health of a business sector. Based on the evidence from Milan, there are definitely reasons to be cheerful. Many of the key machinery brands were either introducing or underlining their Industry 4.0 platforms with VR, IoT, AI, cloudbased solutions and various other acronyms and monikers being bandied about. This is a subject I will return to in the near future, but in basic terms, these new platforms by the likes of SCM, Homag, Biesse and others gather information from networks of devices to provide users and technicians with more control over their machines. Already, billions of ‘things’ are connected and this is rapidly increasing – confirming that Industry 4.0 is a viable pathway for manufacturers looking to improve efficiency and productivity. Looking forward to September, our industry’s own W Exhibition and Elements looks set to amplify that Spring confidence for the domestic market. Speaking to event director Lisa Campagnola over a wet lunch in Milan, I understand that the event is almost sold out and well on track to be the best in recent memory. Familiar exhibitors and brands are returning to the fold as well as a roster of new entrants, from the UK and overseas, will be there for visitors to meet – as indeed we will be on our traditional stand in the middle of the show. 2018 is shaping up to be a milestone year, for all the right reasons.

Mentor: what the new LEEA standards mean for you Mentor FLT Training, a leading national provider of workplace transport training, has revealed what the new LEEA standards for electric overhead travelling crane operators course mean for operators and businesses alike. The new standard, which was developed in response to inconsistencies in the accreditation system, limits the number of delegates on the course to four. In addition, the new minimum course length has been set as two days; courses shorter than this will be considered ‘refresher’ training. Prior to the introduction of the new standard, courses were assessed on a case-by-case basis – per training provider application. Stuart Taylor, managing director of Mentor FLT Training explains: “Previously, it was down to the trainer to recommend the duration, as well as the maximum number of delegates on

FP296 pages.3.indd 4

each course. At some companies, this resulted in classes as big as six people…” While some companies will require significant changes to course content, Mentor’s high training standards mean that its crane operator course – which exceeds best practice guidelines – will remain unchanged. Like other courses from Mentor, the maximum number of delegates on the twoday course will continue to be capped at just three – ensuring the time and one-on-one engagement necessary to maximise learning retention. Stuart concludes: “We’ve always believed in setting the highest standards with each of our courses, so with this new LEEA standard, it just means that more and more delegates will benefit from the level of training we demand of ourselves.” www.mentortraining.co.uk

Bureau Veritas UK, a leader in testing, inspection and certification, has won two gold accolades at this year’s prestigious RoSPA Health and Safety Awards 2018. The company achieved the Gold Medal award for the sixth consecutive year and the Fleet Safety Gold award in the internationally-renowned annual scheme run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Key to securing the award wins, Bureau Veritas has been commended specifically for its role in consistently sustaining high standards of health and safety across the organisation for a number of years. Promising to be a prestigious affair, the business will be presented with the awards during a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel on Thursday 5th July. Kyle Veitch, Bureau Veritas’ technical quality risk director for north west Europe, says: “To win not just one but two Gold RoSPA awards for the sixth consecutive year in a row is fantastic recognition of Bureau Veritas’ commitment to delivering the absolute best in health and safety.”

New online categories for this year’s Bed Industry Awards With new online retail categories, this year’s National Bed Federation Bed Industry Awards are set to be bigger and better. Taking place at the Bed Show Gala Dinner – on 18th September – for the eighth consecutive year, the Bed Industry Awards are a credible celebration of what’s good about the industry and provide a great opportunity for manufacturers, suppliers and retailers of all shapes and sizes – from big brands to small niche players – to highlight their fantastic achievements. Bed Manufacturer of the Year (split into two awards – over £10m turnover and less than £10m turnover) and Bed Component Supplier of the Year categories remain the same. This year bed retailer entrants will be split across Large/ Online Large Retailer (bed turnover over £5m) and Small/Online Small Retailer (bed turnover under £5m). “We have run the Bed Industry Awards for eight years and over the years the retail selling market has changed,” says Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF. “We have reintroduced an online retail category but have differentiated between large and small and online versus traditional bricks and mortar.

“Retailers will only be able to enter one category. Larger retailers should choose the category that best describes where most (50% plus) of their sales take place. Smaller retailers may choose either category, depending on where they think their strength lies for the 12 months being considered for the award.” The independent judging panel remains in place – Peter Mallinson, AIS; Roy Beagent, Minerva; Bernard Eaton, Greenwood Retail; Richard de Melim, Furnishing Report; and Jessica Alexander, NBF. Once again, the judges will be looking for companies that have excelled in the past year (June 2017 to June 2018) and the data that backs that up. Closing date for entries is Friday 20th July. www.bedshow.co.uk/awards

Trade association elects new president The National Bed Federation (NBF), the trade association for British and Irish bed manufacturers and their suppliers, has appointed a new president following election at its AGM. Tony Lisanti, CEO of Airsprung Group plc, will take over from Simon Spinks, managing director of Harrison Spinks, who has served a year as NBF president. An NBF council/board member for some 16 years, Tony has seen the trade association transform itself into a modern, forward-thinking and highly ambitious organisation. Tony, who also sits on the NBF Quality and Standards committee and chairs the Recycling committee says: “I am genuinely honoured to be the next NBF president. I aim to continue the sterling work of past presidents on raising standards in the industry and making further significant progress on how the industry handles waste and recycling.” A new director was also elected to the NBF executive board: David Moffitt of Kayfoam Woolfson.

New dedicated website for Mighton’s Ankerstuy customers As the range continues to go from strength to strength since its first introduction to the UK joinery market, Mighton Products has launched a dedicated website for its Mighton Ankerstuy range. The new site, which acts as an information hub for the paints and coatings range, has been designed to reflect the recently-rebranded Mighton Ankerstuy style, and the wider Mighton brand aesthetics, as marketing director Jim Herrington explains: “The satellite website goes hand in hand with the new Mighton Ankerstuy branding, including the new paint catalogue launched earlier this year and the updated paints and coatings section on the main Mighton website, where customers are redirected to from the new site for placing all orders. “With feature-rich sections including Mighton’s core paint values, technical advice and of course user-friendly navigation, it will be the one-stop-shop for our joinery customers looking at the exterior, interior and specialist paints we offer.” In addition, Mighton has made the full extended range of standard colours available on its main website for customers to order, as well as promoting its renowned colour match service. Since the broader range of paints came online in February the company has reported a definite upsurge of interest. Customers now have access to ordering not just exterior finishes but also interior and specialist products, including both opaque and transparent types with colour matching available across the range. www.mightonankerstuy.com

Getting greater value from machines Biesse Group’s SOPHIA platform enables customers to access an extensive range of services to streamline and rationalise work management processes. Biesse’s latest service platform, SOPHIA, launches in the UK in July 2018 and will provide users with the possibility of improving overall equipment efficiency of their Biesse machines as well as offering a cloud-based e-parts system that allows a registered user to see in-stock items, prices and ordering with just a few clicks. This is Biesse’s initial offering for Industry 4.0 and the IoT (Internet of Things), creating a digital infrastructure to underpin modern manufacturing. The platform has the ability to collect and send real-time data on connected machines, offering the possibility for customers to analyse and optimise overall performance and productivity. Additionally there is functionality that will help in detecting potential malfunctions and assisting customers in maintenance operations, as well as ordering replacement parts, ultimately helping to improve the up-time of machines.

Over the past five months, connected machines have registered a 60% growth in productivity and the platform has highlighted that Biesse has handled more than 2,000,000 events of various types. “The results registered over these first few months demonstrate how the services we offer our customers help increase the operating time of a machine and promote a proactive approach by reducing diagnostic times by 80%,” states Stefano Calestani, the Group’s new service innovation director. “It may have only been on the market a short while but SOPHIA is improving the quality of relations with customers who have benefited from using the tool. It is a quick and decisive support, which minimises waiting times previously required to deal with problems, and responds with effective and immediate solutions. This is the substantial opportunity SOPHIA offers our customers,” Calestani continues. 01327 300366 www.biesse.com

Jim Pearson of of UK and European patent attorneys, Abel & Imray, explains on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) how the enforcement and/or infringement of IP rights can be handled by a business in the fourth of this series of six articles looking at IP.

Enforcement and infringement of IP rights Intellectual Property rights provide monopolies. The owner of an IP right can exclude other parties from doing something if it falls within the scope of the IP right. Successful companies act to minimise the risk of infringing the IP rights of others when launching a new product or offering a new service, as well as protecting and enforcing their own IP rights. Roper Rhodes, one of the UK’s leading independent suppliers of bathroom furniture and products, has experienced both sides of the issues of infringement and enforcement, as is illustrated in the two case studies below.   CASE STUDY 1 – being the enforcer when no rights have been registered Roper Rhodes became aware that a competitor was offering for sale a bathroom cabinet that looked suspiciously similar to one they had designed – Roper Rhodes’ Ascension Cabinet. The cabinet is a sleek-looking mirrored doubledoor Aluminium cabinet with vertically-extending fluorescent strip lights on either side of the cabinet. The competitor’s product looked so similar that the only logical explanation was that there must have been copying – the Chinese manufacturer being suspected as the source of copying. Two factors stood out: • the exact correspondence between the external and other dimensions of Roper Rhodes’ product and the competitors, and • the reproduction of a wholly redundant aspect of the early version of the cabinet (which Roper Rhodes’ designer had wanted to remove, and which appeared to have been slavishly copied). Roper Rhodes had not sought to register this particular design of cabinet so, on this occasion, had to rely on their Unregistered Design Rights. The case for proving copying was strong however, and Roper Rhodes succeeded in getting complete capitulation on the part of the accused: • product withdrawn • remaining stock returned to China • £6k contribution to costs • list of customers supplied with the product to date – not that many as it happened. This was all achieved without the case getting anywhere near a court, which after all is how many IP disputes are handled. IP attorneys and solicitors handling disputes will weigh up the strength of a case, look for solutions or workarounds and will in the vast majority of cases resolve a dispute long before the threat of court proceedings needs to arise. Had the shape and appearance of Roper Rhodes’ Ascension cabinet been registered as a design beforehand, the above case might

FP296 pages.3.indd 10

Roper Rhodes’s Ascension cabinet

Competitor’s product

have been settled even sooner. With so many different products being designed it can be difficult to decide in advance which products make it worth investing in registered protection. Roper Rhodes has however registered the important design features of other cabinets as Registered Designs in the EU. By choosing which parts of the shape of a cabinet are important, it is possible to tailor the protection afforded by the design registration.

For example, some of Roper Rhodes’ EU designs for cabinets have been filed such that the depth of the cabinet is not a feature that limits the scope of protection, nor is the type or location of the hinges of the cabinet. Another advantage of registered design protection is that subsequent independent creation is no defence to infringement of a registered design – there is no need to prove copying to succeed in enforcing a prior-registered design.

How do you determine what infringes? Types of activity Importing, selling, making and/or using a product, performing a process and offering to do any of those things, can all be stopped by the owner of a relevant IP right. Patents The claims of the patent specification (in the country where an “infringing activity” is taking place) are the primary guide to whether or not a product or activity falls within the scope of the patent. The wording of the claims will be critical. Registered Designs and (Unregistered) Design Rights The test here is whether the appearance of the product (or ornamentation/pattern on the product) provides the same “overall impression” as the design as registered. The images chosen to represent the design will be critical. A similar test is used to determine whether an unregistered design is infringed, but in the case of unregistered rights there needs to be proof of copying. Registered Trade Marks If a similar brand is being used on goods or services that are the same or similar to those for which the trade mark is registered, there will be infringement to the extent that there is a likelihood of confusion on the part of the consumer. The choice of trade mark, how similar it is phonetically, visually and conceptually to the brand being used, and the types of goods/services concerned can all play a part in assessing whether or not there is infringement. Copyright Reproduction (copying) of a substantial part of a copyright protected work (whether that’s a photo, an original piece of writing, or a pattern or other graphic work) can be prevented by the owner of the work. It is important to be able to prove authorship / ownership of the work and to show that there was – or must have been – copying of the work.

NEWS 11

www.furnitureproduction.net

CASE STUDY 2 – being accused of infringement Roper Rhodes have also experienced the enforcement of IP rights from the other side – as the alleged infringer. They had been selling a toilet seat with a quick-release soft-close hinge mechanism. Unbeknown to Roper Rhodes, the particular features used in their hinge to provide its functionality were protected by a European patent owned by a German company. The European patent was granted and in force in the UK as well as other European countries.

A study of the validity of the patent was conducted and an opinion provided on the likelihood of being held by a court to infringe the patent. Negotiations then followed. The case settled by means of Roper Rhodes paying some modest compensation for past sales, switching

suppliers and agreeing to use a different non-infringing design for future products. There were a few products in Roper Rhodes’s range where it was not so easy to design around, but as a result of taking a conciliatory and amicable approach, the deal reached gave concessions to Roper Rhodes in relation to those products. Again, a decent settlement was reached without the need for court proceedings. Roper Rhodes had innocently fallen foul of a patent, but once alerted to this news was able – by taking positive action soon enough – to find a solution that was satisfactory for all concerned.   Lessons to learn • Enforcement of IP rights can be swift, successful and doesn’t need to involve court proceedings. • Registering IP rights at the right stage can assist in later enforcement against copy-cat infringers. • Investing in getting strong protection for your company’s IP rights will pay-off later if and when there is undesirable/unfair competition at a later date. • Unintentionally infringing the IP rights of others happens. But there is often no need to panic or for the matter to escalate out of control. Your patent attorney or trade mark attorney will be able to advise you on matters regarding the enforcement and/or infringement of IP rights. For further information on any of the points raised, or if there is a query on any intellectual property matter, Jim would be happy to assist. Email him at jim.pearson@ abelimray.com.

Independent British furniture manufacturer Whitemeadow is set to launch its own sewing school to help address the challenge of finding the next generation of skilled upholstery sewing machinists.

Whitemeadow launches sewing school designed to address skills gap The Nottinghamshire-based firm will shortly be on the lookout for its first 12 new recruits to join the school, where they will receive onthe-job training in all aspects of sewing fabrics required to make Whitemeadow’s range of sofas and other furniture. Founded in 1990, Whitemeadow employs around 500 people across six sites within a two-mile radius of Huthwaite. It has more than 170,000ft2 of manufacturing space. It is one of the few remaining independently-owned British upholstery manufacturers. The company is also trusted and wellrespected and is a key supplier to the UK’s largest blue chip and independent furniture retailers. It has struggled in recent years however to recruit skilled sewing machinists, which has prompted the company to try and develop its own in-house talent instead. Ian Oscroft, the firm’s MD, says: “This area is famed for its rich tradition and heritage in sofa manufacturing. There are several major upholstery manufacturers in the area, ourselves included, but there is a definite skills shortage currently which needs to be addressed. “There are loads of opportunities for employment in the sector, but the problem we’ve got is that working as a sewing machinist is not seen as a glamourous career choice, a perception we need to change. “The idea behind our sewing school is to encourage people to pursue a career in upholstery manufacturing and equip them with the technical skills and experience they need to make a go of it.”

Ian says that the key to finding more skilled sewing machinists is by making people aware of the opportunities on their doorstep. At Whitemeadow, sewing machinist roles are dominated by females, and this is representative across the sector. Although applications are welcome from men, the lack of men choosing sewing machining as a career has sparked action, as it is believed more can be done to redress the gender imbalance and Whitemeadow intends to champion this change in mindset. “We have seen a great deal of focus recently on the need to attract more women to maledominated roles but encouraging men into female- dominated roles is equally important,” Ian explains. “We need to tackle stereotypes about men not being suitable for traditionally female roles.” Whitemeadow is set to open a new state-of-

FP296 pages.3.indd 13

the-art showroom in the summer and the sewing school will be housed in the space created by moving its design and development department into the new facility. The aim is to have a rolling programme of 12 recruits who will join the school on an informal training programme and move into permanent employment with the company if they successfully complete their training. Ian adds: “We need to get more people coming through and equipping them with the skills they need to perform these roles. “If we don’t it will mean that we’ll have to outsource overseas and to me, that’s a great shame. Having workers with the skills we need is better for our business and will also have a knock-on effect on the economy as a whole.” To apply for a place at the sewing school, email recruitment@whitemeadow.com www.whitemeadow.com

impact of Combilift on the border region. “As one of the most significant employers in Monaghan, the positive impact that Combilift has on the county, the border region and Ireland cannot be under-estimated. Perhaps above all, the company is living proof that you don’t have to be in a big city to achieve global success. “As Minister, I am focused on ensuring we have the right conditions in place to encourage job creation right across country, so supporting ambitious companies like Combilift is hugely important. I am delighted that the Government, through Enterprise Ireland, has part-funded the manufacturing facility, which paves the way for this exciting business to double its output and create new jobs in the region. Today is a wonderful day for Monaghan and Ireland.” Speaking at the opening of the new manufacturing facility, part-funded by Enterprise Ireland, Julie Sinnamon, Enterprise Ireland CEO said “Enterprise Ireland has worked closely with Combilift from the outset of their incredible journey as a start-up to a global leader today, exporting to 85 countries. Combilift’s success is a testament to the hard work of the team, and to an unrelenting focus on market-led innovation. “These achievements represent the strength of Irish businesses who are achieving global scale and are positioned as global leaders in their own right. Their success has been built on being innovative and being the best in their field. Enterprise Ireland has worked intensively with Combilift to achieve their ambition, scale and phenomenal international growth.” New factory The new 46,500m2 purpose–built factory is set on a 100-acre site with room for future

expansion when required. With 11 acres of roof space, it is one of the largest manufacturing operations under one single roof in the Republic of Ireland. Incorporating the latest manufacturing processes with a focus on sustainability, the new factory will enable Combilift to double its output in a single shift across all production lines. Four 90m moving assembly lines produce a finished truck every 15 minutes. There are 60 welding bays, two plasma cutting machines, three paint lines which use sustainable water-based paints and three automatic shot blasters to cater for different sized products. 12,000 pallet locations ensure ample storage space for parts and

components. The facility also includes a 50-seat cinema training room, 5000m² of office space and a dedicated R&D development and testing centre. Creating an light and airy interior working space, 23% of roof space is covered in skylights, enabling staff to work in natural daylight without the assistance of artificial lighting. Other lighting is provided through 1100 LED light with individual PIR sensors. Solar panels supply 185 kW of energy with a 1mW Biomass plant fuelled by recycled wood (pallets etc) to heat the spraying booths and assembly area. Some 110,000 litres of rain water are harvested for jet washing and bathroom facilities.

More than 50 truckloads of finished products are dispatched from the factory each week, and spare parts are shipped across the world to the dealer network. Certified to international quality and safety management standards, the new headquarters and manufacturing facility has been awarded ISO 9001 international quality management system, ISO 14001 Environment Management and OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. Growth of Combilift Established by Martin McVicar, managing director and Robert in Moffett, technical director, in 1998, Combilift is a privately held and fully capitalised company. It developed the world’s first multi-directional all-wheel drive internal combustion engine-powered forklift in 1998. In the first year of operation it produced 18 units,17 of which were exported. The company has more than doubled in the last five years and now has 40,000 units in operation in over 85 countries. Combilift’s product portfolio has expanded way beyond its first multi-directional model according to Martin: “Combilift has always focused on a number of niche market segments and has a proven track record of launching one or two new products annually. In the first 10 years we focussed on the long load material handling sector with the multidirectional range which revolutionised the handling of long materials, allowing customers to handle long products in less space more safely.”

Between 2008 and 2018 Combilift diversified its product ranged by developing a number of innovative space saving warehouse and heavy load handling products; the Aisle Master articulated truck and the Straddle Carrier (CombiSC) respectively. Pedestrian products were introduced into the range in the last five years, enabling Combilift to gain a foothold in this growing market. The Combi-WR, Combi-WR4 and the Combi-CS all incorporate Combilift’s unique patented multi-positional tiller arm technology. “There is a growing demand for pedestrian trucks, driven by safety concerns where customers and/or employees are in the vicinity of operating forklifts,” said McVicar. “It is our intention to significantly expand this range, as can be seen with the launch of the new high lift capacity Combilift Powered Pallet Truck (Combi-HC-PPT).”

Mass customisation Martin McVicar attributes the company’s impressive growth and its status as an acknowledged world leader in the material handling sector to mass customisation. “Combilift has set the benchmark for the mass production of customised innovative products. Mass customisation is the new frontier for both the customer and the manufacturer as customers are increasingly expecting products to be tailored to their requirements. We listen to and take feedback on board from our customers and dealers to identify solutions that best match their individual specific needs.” Combilift invests 7% of its annual turnover in Research and Development to enhance its customisation capability and to maximise ROI for its customers. “The flexibility in our new facility means that we can continue to accommodate any request for a customised material handling solution. We also see ourselves as much more than a forklift manufacturer and are transforming the transport and logistics sector with our innovative, space-spacing products and our services.” Combilift offers a free logistic and warehouse design service which enables customers to see the benefit that its products will bring to their business. “Our engineers proactively design, plan and produce material flow analysis and 3D animations – 150 to 200 per day for our worldwide customers – which clearly illustrate the capacity potential as well as the optimum flow of materials on their site.” say Martin. Combilift was a business that was already in rude health expanded its customer base steadily for 20 years. This investment is strong statement of intent and serves to underline the company’s ambition – and capability – moving forward. As the final frame of the company’s video commemorating Combilift’s 20th anniversary and the opening of its magnificent new facility says: “This is only the beginning!” www.combilift.com

A helathy roster of Italian and international brands gave visitors plenty to peruse, but many of the larger brand name manufacturers including Homag, SCM, Biesse and others made a major play on the software side of their business operation. Bid ‘hallo’ to Tapio from Homag, ‘ciao’ to Sophia at Biesse and ‘come va’ at the Maestro from SCM. These and other software platforms are designed to take advantage of the IoT, the internet of things and the advent of Industry 4.0.The Internet of Things has become a reality thanks technological convergence. IBM descibres it thus: “A ‘thing’ is any object with embedded electronics that can transfer data over a network — without any human interaction.” So machinery in factories, and the tooling and materials being used can all be connected to deliver intelligence for operators, managers to monitor and adapt processes as required. Another area which contributes to and uses to this information is the increased adoption of robotics, especially in high production environments. Visitors will not have seen so much automation and so many advanced systems in a show before marking Xylexpo 2018 out watershed event in many ways. Indeed, in the show preamble, the organiser was promising plenty of technology for panels and solid wood processing among other things. The exhibition attracted over 17,500 operators, up 2% on the previous edition. Of those, 5032 came from abroad. “With these figures we can say that Xylexpo has found its place in the more and more crowded and sometimes messy landscape of industry exhibitions,” comments Dario Corbetta, director of the exhibition. “We have made a clear choice, namely to be a stage for high technology, and this approach has increased the participation of an even more selected and qualified audience, with decision-making power and adequate expertise.” By adding the fourth hall in this edition, the organiser had created a better, more easily navigable layout for visitors to find which of the 425 exhibitors they wishd to visit. The dates of the next Xylexpo have have been confirmed as Monday 25th to Friday 29th May, 2020, changing the traditional Tuesday-to-Saturday timeframe.

Working in concert for effective high performance sanding solution Biesse has come up with an innovative sanding solution for panels that combines the advantages of the automatic robotised sanding with the ever higher process productivity required by the market. The technology of Opera R1, which already offers impressive levels of repeatability, precision and quality, has now been doubled to create Opera R2 – the automatic sanding machine with two high-precision robotised units. With Opera R1, the sensitivity of the artisan’s touch when manually sanding with an abrasive has been successfully reproduced; the result is a control force patent applied to the work unit. Constant machining quality is guaranteed by the use of industrial robots to control the processes. The evolution of Opera R2 has brought these technologies together, making it possible to double the process productivity level. Each robotised Opera R2 unit uses dedicated technologies for the autonomous and independent control of every operation. The machine, in fact, is fitted with

two magazines for tool change operations and two cleaning boxes for removing the abrasive material. In addition, the management of the working area using two separate feed mats (that can slide on the work table at the same speed or at two different speeds), combined with the automatic recognition of the incoming panel dimensions using a twin, dedicated 3D laser scanner, allows the diversified use of the two robots according to the type of panel to be machined and the required result. In particular, increased productivity is obtained with the new machine when the robots work independently on the piece on the respective feed mat. The resulting process is the same as when carrying out machining operations on two machines with a single robot, but with clear benefits in terms of a reduced initial investment cost and reduced overall dimensions. The major advantage of Opera R2 compared with its twin, Opera R1, concerns the machining of large panels. In fact, the effective work area can be extended by using both

The high quality of the robotised smoothing operation now increases productivity two-fold

robots, each working on one half of the panel. The last innovation with this new technology relates to the mobile stop for the incoming piece, which facilitates the profiling – smoothing or brushing – of the piece with the aid of specific tools. It therefore becomes possible to work the outer

profile of shaped pieces with vertical and/or chamfered edges. The innovative Opera R2 combines the big numbers of the assembly chain with personalisation and the added value of traditional handcrafted skill. 01327 300366 www.biesse.com/uk

Automaction – pragmatic solutions for factory automation Automaction is a new Biesse concept that represents the practicality of the new technological innovations developed by the company to create new business models based on automated, interconnected production. The success of the Biesse’s design and production of systems and plants is been confirmed after the company stated that its target of 100 projects in a year have been set up within the year and that over 1000 systems are currently operating at Biesse customers across the world. After the huge success obtained with the Winstore automatic magazines, which allowed Biesse to offer a flexible loading solution for managing job orders in the first production process – sectioning and nesting – the company is now supplying technologies for managing panel handling during all the production processes. The new company strategy is based on the development of smart machines that perform repetitive

FP296 pages.3.indd 24

cycles to reach top production efficiency. The company’s spirit of innovation is taking an step forward in the evolution of robotised systems for moving panels – machines guided by software to manage the various needs, and able to carry out the work in predetermined times and to a repeating quality standard. The robots and can easily be inserted in the production flow, optimising the machining cycles. Robots are a solution that combines versatility, efficiency and high investment returns. Technologies that are easy to use and extremely precise, and that can work autonomously. “We’ve created BiesseSystems, an internal structure made up of highly specialised technical and commercial personnel, to offer our customers specific solutions for their own specific production needs” says Mauro Pede, BiesseSystems sales manager. 01327 300366 www.biesse.com/uk

Successful Bristol-based training business, Didac, is recognised as the UK’s national provider of specialist training to the furniture, timber and merchant trades. In the first of a series of articles, Didac’s managing director Jon Gibson and commercial director, Martin James talk exclusively to Furniture & Joinery Production about how the business began and how it continues to evolve at a time when acute demand for skilled staff is clear.

Providing solutions for the furniture industry’s skills shortage Didac directors Jon Gibson and Martin James first met in 1996, when Jon borrowed a Rye CNC router for the apprentice stand that he was running for the Woodmex show. By coincidence, three weeks prior to the exhibition, the board of Rye Machinery had decided to set up a training company, which culminated in the formation of Didac in June 1997. At that time, Martin was managing director of Rye Machinery. He recalls: “After talking to Jon for three minutes, I knew he had the educational skills in furniture, woodworking and wood machining to lead the training company, so we teamed up from there.” From the outset, Didac’s mission was to improve the skills, productivity and safety in the furniture and woodworking sectors. That same mission is still the same today, but it’s achieved in an increasing number of ways. Jon and Martin have seen the evolution of sector initiatives, having sat on a variety of wood sector training committees including Wood Industry Forum, Shopfitters Independent Training Forum, Wood Industry Group, Qualifications Reform Group, Proskills Wood Industry Board, Wood Safety Group (made up of trade associations) and the HSE – and more recently the Furniture and Interiors Skills Training Alliance. Over the years, they have seen faces and organisations come and go, but either Jon or Martin has been a constant presence around the table. This has given them an unrivalled vision of skills development in the sector. They are still very much involved in sector initiatives including those being worked on by Wood Industry Training Forum and the Furniture and Interiors Education Skills Training Alliance, which is on the cusp of setting up what Martin describes as a major initiative in skills development in the furniture and interiors sector, which takes advantage of the new funding rules for apprenticeships. The Wood Safety Group is also taking a new direction, with the group taking more proactive ownership of health and safety in the sector.

“Around 90% of our training is delivered in the workplace – this means Didac learners receive direct instruction and are assessed on the equipment, materials and products they work with day in day out.”

FP296 pages.3.indd 27

As an indication of Didac’s impact on the sector, in the last 12 months, Didac has trained around 3000 individuals in wood machining skills on its short-course programme; and has trained a similar number in plant equipment and vehicle movement training. Didac currently has a team of 25 trainers located throughout the country delivering their extensive range of training programmes including wood and furniture skills, health and safety, plant equipment, vehicle movement through to management training. Currently, Didac has approximately 200 apprentices in training. All are employed, and all follow a minimum 12-month training programme, with the average length being around 16 months. And training is not just for younger trainees either. Jon’s view of wood machine training for senior wood machinists is robust: “I don’t believe in that old chestnut that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks – oh yes you can!” he asserts. Jon explains that some employers are concerned about how external trainers will be received by timeserved wood machinist. “We understand that, but we know from experience that everyone gets something out of the training sessions we deliver. “The fact of the matter is that bad habits and shortcuts become second nature and without refresher training, which should be undertaken every three to five years, it can often become embedded behaviour, which becomes even more dangerous if it’s passed on to the next generation of wood machinists, as can frequently be the case.” Didac’s business model intrigues many, because most training providers are either 100% short-course training or 100% apprentice training. Didac has a healthy split of around 50/50, which means it can offer the right course for the right situation – from a few days for short-courses, three to six months for NVQs, practical on-the-job training – and typically 12-24 months on a full apprenticeship programme.” “Around 90% of our training is delivered in the workplace,” explains Martin, “this means Didac learners receive direct instruction and are assessed on the equipment, materials and products they work with day in day out. Jon says: “There is no hiding place for our trainers when they are in the client workshops, so it’s very important to us that we employ trainers who not only have the right skills, but they also need the right occupational experience as well, so they have bench speed in what they do. This provides confidence on the training we deliver. “In 2011 we started our study programme for 16-18 year-olds as we are passionate about igniting interest

Background • In the early noughties, Didac piloted training materials and a competency qualification in woodworking machine training. This was an EU-funded project facilitated by the HSE, but on completion of the project the industry couldn’t fund the continuation project, so Didac went ahead and developed the Woodwise Certificate of Competency Scheme, and investment that over the subsequent four years went well into six figures • In 2010, Didac opened the Woodwise Academy in Bristol, which has since become a centre of excellence for furniture, joinery and wood machine training, with a highly successful study programme for 16-18-yearolds that chose not to stay on at school or college but must be in education • Around the same time, Didac started delivering industrial plant equipment training, which has grown to six full time trainers located delivering training to 3000 learners in the past 12 months Commercial director Martin James (left) with operations manager Elaine Stanley and MD Jon Gibson

in school students and working with the local community in Bristol. The course offers an alternative to sixth form or college and works with smaller groups of students interested in this industry. “We also work with local hospital schools supporting those students that have the skill set but not always the confidence to approach further education easily. “Thus far this has been a huge success and in 2017, we were able to double numbers due to the high interest and this resulted in many students being placed with local companies on apprenticeships and on progression programmes with us,” says Jon. “We also introduced a school programme to work with local secondary schools and those students that are home-schooled, to assist them in returning to peer environments.” When it comes to running the business, Jon and Martin have always agreed on strategy, because they have a very good understanding of the skills gaps in the furniture and woodworking sectors, which stems from their background when at the age of 16 and 18 respectively they first joined the furniture industry. Martin explains: ”We have always consulted and listened to industry’s needs; and helped close the skills gap through partnership working to help develop executable action plans.” He adds: “We don’t always agree in the more detailed execution of our plans, but over the years we have worked out that’s what makes us a good team. We are always trouble-shooting,

trying to improve; and reinventing ourselves to make sure we match our business services and delivery models to the needs of our clients. Our ultimate mantra is to be the best – as judged by you, which means anyone using our services or auditing. “Talking of teams, we have recently expanded our leadership team with the appointment of Elaine Stanley as operations manager. Elaine joined Didac in 2008 and has been a critical support for Jon and myself ever since.” Elaine describes her role as far reaching: “The most challenging element is being the umpire when Jon and Martin can’t agree, but an accommodation is usually achieved in good spirits – only joking!” “When I joined Didac, I had no idea of how complicated the compliance side of training can be,” Elaine explains: “Some is self-imposed so that we are absolutely certain that our training is up to standard, but we are externally audited almost once per month throughout the year by a whole host of organisations. “Didac is not only unusual because it delivers a mix of funded training and short-course commercial training, but because we insist on applying the same quality procedures to commercial training as well as funded training. I don’t know of another training provider who does that. “ ‘You’ is the key variable,” she says, “clearly the learners are the most important ‘you’, but we are also judged by their employers, trade associations; the awarding bodies who control

“There is no hiding place for our trainers when they are in the client workshops, so it’s very important to us that we employ trainers who not only have the right skills, but they also need the right occupational experience as well, so they have bench speed in what they do. • In 2011, Didac took over the Apprenticeship Training division of the Builders Merchants Federation, which has been modernised and developed under Didac’s tutelage to probably the biggest merchant apprenticeship programme in the country. It continues to work with BMF members as well as those through EDA recruitment, which is itself a highly successful apprenticeship programme for electrical distributors • In 2015 Didac became a CITB centre for bench joinery, furniture and wood machining

the qualifications we deliver, right the way through to Ofsted who is the ultimate judge of training quality. “In 21 years we have had the equivalent of seven Ofsted inspections. On all occasions, our training provision has been judged as good or outstanding. We are very proud of that.” As for the future, Martin comments: “Opening another academy somewhere else in the country is not out of the question, but the work-based skills development model we have developed is so versatile and convenient for employers, so that’s our focus in the short term to make sure we help furnituremakers take advantage of the new flexibilities in apprenticeship training, wherever they are located.” He adds: “We would like to increase our presence in the upholstery and sewing sectors, where we know there is demand from employers, but a shortage of learners and training providers to support their skills development, so look out for a fresh initiative there.” www.didac.co.uk

When Principal Doorsets decided it was time to expand its business and move to new premises in Barnstaple, Devon, it selected Air Plants Dust Extraction to supply and install the dust extraction system serving a Talbott’s Biomass Energy Systems MWE300 boiler plant.

Air Plants open the door for Principal

In excess of an accumulated 550 years in the interior performance timber doorset supply market, Principal Doorsets is extremely proud of its position as one of the country’s leading doorset manufacturers. Having developed its expertise from a broad understanding of joinery and cabinetmaking industries, Prinicpal Doorsets offers beautifully finished, high performance interior products in most finishes and designs. The company seeks to deliver outstanding service and quality to its clients and taked pride in delivering on its commitments. Prinicpal Doorsets is a rapidly growing business with innovation and continual improvement at the heart of what it does. Investing in a partnerships for mutual benefit, with honesty and integrity whether that is to its customers, workforce or supply chain. At the new Barnstaple site, state-of-the-art

FP296 pages.3.indd 30

woodworking machinery is employed in cutting, processing and finishing large quantities of timber based panels which, in turn, generates high levels of woodwaste. Stan Bond, director of Principal Doorsets, invited Air Plants to come up with a system that would cater for the relocated and additional machines, whilst keeping the overall costs to within their budgeted allowance. After careful consideration of Principal’s requirements, Air Plants came up with a scheme that involved the use of two refurbished modulair filters, along with new fans, ductwork and transfer system to the storage bunker of the Talbott’s boiler system. The installed system has a total airflow capacity of 57,000m3/hr, which is 50% greater capacity than the original system’s 37,000m3/ hr. The two new fans extract 37,000m3/hr and 20,000m3/hr each.

The filtered air is returned to the factory to provide replacement air for that being extracted. It also helps the boiler plant run more efficiently. The solid woodwaste created during cutting processes is dealt with by an Untha LR630 shredder, which reduces the waste to a chip that’s suitable for the boiler plant to handle. This waste is then transferred to the boiler via the extraction plant. The control system supplied links a number of control panels together, with sequencing of the system start up and shutdown processed through a PLC. Stan Bond goes on to say: “We went out to completive tender on this latest project looking both separately and system-based. There were not many that offer the joined-up solutions that Air Plants/Talbott’s do so the selection process was not difficult as there were only three suppliers that were of the quality we sought. “The communication and offer front end was exceptional. Staff from both Air Plants and Talbott’s worked on the optimal solution and convinced us that we ought to future-proof the installation with the appropriate boiler. We took on board their recommendations of boiler and extraction configuration and placed our order. “The product was on time as promised – the lead time was short as we wanted to get ready

FP296 pages.3.indd 31

before moving in plant and equipment that would have hindered access had it been in place. The extraction filter boxes where fully overhauled and new filter sleeves fitted. We had a new fan and motor with a frequency controller fitted to optimise the running of the unit. The electronics were overhauled and linking of the two fan sets with stop, start and emergency stop circuits. The system runs really well and does precisely what was specified. “We now have a system that captures all of our process waste, whether that is directly extracted off the process or via a chipper that is connected into the woodwaste extraction system. There are signals to show when we are making too much that prompts us to slow the chipping of waste. “We have been running the boiler system now 24/7 mainly to manage our waste stream. This has been tremendously helpful to our processes and we have benefitted from quality improvement and process waste reduction – oh, and the workforce are comfortable too, we have hot air heat in the factory when required, hot water and hot water piped to our radiators keeping us all comfortable.” www.airplants.co.uk www.talbotts.co.uk www.principaldoorsets.com

Brooks Joinery was started in 1981 by Colin Brooks where he mostly worked on fitting out and restoring narrow boats. Colin built his first boat at age 11 and his passion for woodworking has developed from there. Colin first came across the Felder Group at Woodmex whilst looking for a spindle moulder, Colin comments: “Felder were the only ones, at that time, that had a spindle moulder that tilted the correct way and since then we have purchased a panel saw which has now been upgraded to a kappa 450, a dual 51 planerthicknesser and upgraded our original spindle moulder to the profil 45 Z all from the Format-4 range.” He adds: “All our machines now have the electrical Power-Drive controls giving us much greater accuracy and you can just look at the scales to see where they are set.” “When buying a machine we look for quality and versatility, I have always said when we buy a machine it needs to do everything we could possibly ever want to do and that is what we have got with the machines from Felder. “Our profil 45 is the first spindle moulder we have had with a sliding table, which has been great even with our lack of room within the workshop, it’s helped with tenoning and angle tenoning. Talking about his experience of Felder, Colin says: “We have not had any problems with Felder, you feel that the Austrian work ethic is more conscientious than some of the other

brands that we have previously purchased. The service has always been very good and very quick and over the 10-15 years we have never had a problem; they come back to us very quickly and resolve any issue. Having got through the recession with the help of its Maka five-axis machine run on Alphacam software, Allwood Architectural Joinery has improved throughout considerably with Alphacam getting the very best our of both its Maka five-axis and Biesse nesting machines.

Alphacam slashes joinery firm’s manufacturing process for CNC – from a day to an hour “Alphacam is one of our energisers – it’s definitely helped us get where we are today.” Those are the words of Gerard Magee, director of family-run Allwood Architectural Joinery, which celebrated its 21st anniversary last year. Based at Ballymacken, Portlaoise, in the Irish Republic, the company originally focused on hotel and bar fit-outs, but diversified when the recession hit. He says their five-axis Maka PE 70 pod and rail machine programmed with Alphacam helped them to stand out in the recession, by providing the ability to produce complex components. “It showed our capacity to do something different for clients, which was instrumental in getting us through the recession.” One of those clients was Newbridge Silverware, and the ‘something different’ for them was an Art Déco cornice, based on a 1950’s ladies’ fan. “They loved that piece, and we did several shop fit-outs for them throughout the recession. I firmly believe that without Alphacam driving our five-axis machine the company would not have survived at that time.” And production manager Connor Magee explains how Alphacam continued to make a huge difference to them as the effects of the recession subsided. “It’s helped us grow and control our processes to produce parts, including complex components, much quicker, and expand our services to the commercial sector.” Nowadays Allwood’s customer base includes a number of big-name clients and have completed three fit-outs for Google, along with Twitter’s Dublin operation, and Zendesk. As well as the Maka five-axis machine, Alphacam also drives a three-axis Biesse Rover 10 x 5 nesting machine. Workshop manager Eoin Byrne says: “While we’d always used Alphacam Ultimate Router with the Maka, when we got the Biesse and started nesting, we quickly realised we needed the post to include that machine, too, to speed up the programming

FP296 pages.3.indd 36

process. “That, in turn, has speeded up our overall production time, meaning we can turn jobs around much faster.” He says Automation Manager has taken a ‘crazy’ amount of time out of programming, and the company could never go back to manual programming and remain competitive – a point echoed by Connor Magee: “Previously, we’d spend a minimum of six minutes optimising a single sheet. But with Alphacam we can have 30 sheets with up to 200 nested components, complete with labels and reports, at the machine in ten minutes. It takes the manual part out of the process by importing CAD drawings automatically, inputting directly to the machine. “We design our products in Sketchup, as many of the architects we work with like its final 3D visual. Once the drawings are approved we simply click a button to explode it, and the DXF files go down to the shop floor, run through Alphacam’s Automation Manager, and the individual components are nested.” He says Automation Manager has revolutionised their production process. Previously, while a cutlist add-on to their

Sketchup software nested the sheets, it all had to be done manually, and the machining was also applied manually. “Breaking down a typical kitchen ready for the CNC machine tool used to take us a full day. But with Alphacam’s Automation Manager that’s down to an hour – in some cases just half an hour.” He says the process is quick and simple. “We break down our Sketchup drawing into separate files, and all components are nested in the sheet materials that we’ve listed.” Rules are set up for drilling, so all the tools and styles are applied automatically and everything is sent out to the machine with layouts. They also use Alphacam’s labelling system, so the machine operator only has to pull up the sheet, and when the parts come off they’re labelled and stacked on the trolley for forwarding to assembly. “It means everything’s tracked and organised on the system.” Concluding, Connor Magee says it is important to keep up with each of Alphacam’s twice yearly releases. “Every update contains new or enhanced functionality that speeds up our process, making it easier and better. Alphacam is a huge part of our company now and is absolutely integral to the manufacturing process with our two CNC machine tools. “We certainly wouldn’t be able to hit our targets without it, especially on the number of large scale jobs we undertake on a regular basis. And in the future we’re likely to invest in a larger nester with offloading capabilities, and maybe a dowel drill/inserter. Alphacam will definitely be programming that, too.” www.allwood.ie www.alphacam.com

Since installation of an AXYZ 4008 CNC router in January of this year, Newton Abbot, Devon-based RC Motorhomes, a specialist manufacturer of bespoke motor homes, has according to director Richard Churchill “revolutionised its manufacturing capabilities”. This has led to a huge increase in production, shorter lead times and a superior quality of end-product which collectively have contributed to a growing list of satisfied customers.

AXYZ router boosts production at leading motor homes manufacturer Established in 2004, RC Motorhomes has always looked for ways of streamlining production without compromising the quality founded on traditional craft skills for which the company has become renowned. Richard Churchill comments: “Too often in the past we have installed equipment that failed to live up to expectations. Although representing a sizeable investment for us, purchase of the AXYZ 4008 router has been an entirely different and more satisfying experience and well worth the outlay. The machine has already proved to be the best, the most productive and the most reliable piece of capital equipment we have ever purchased during the 14 years we have been in business.” Part of the AXYZ 4000 series, the 4008 router incorporates a seven-station AXYZ Automatic Tool Change (ATC) facility to increase both the flexibility of the machine and its speed of production. The router, which runs on VECTRIC design and production software, has a standard processing width of 1524mm and an expandable processing length of 2438mm. It is used to process a wide range of materials,

FP296 pages.3.indd 38

including plywood, MDF, composites such as DIBOND, solid surface materials like Corian and aluminium and plastics. A big part of the production carried out at RC Motorhomes involves interior furniture such as cabinets and shelving, the quality of

which had to reflect the high standards already established when traditional hand-held methods of production were employed. In common with all AXYZ routers, the AXYZ 4008 is available with a host of optional machine tool enhancements. In particular, these include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/cutting cycle and the latest A2MC machine control system that has a massive 16Gb of memory for program storage and network connectivity to enable error-free program transfer. Further options include the AXYZ AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for precise material alignment and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system featuring a multiple gear teeth configuration. This helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to faster throughput speeds, greater accuracy, reduced material wastage, quieter operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. In conclusion, Richard Churchill adds: “Purchase of the AXYZ 4008 machine has proved a satisfying and eye-opening experience. We have been particularly impressed by the on-site training provided by AXYZ International and the technical support that was readily given prior to, during and following installation of the router which has operated flawlessly from day one.” 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk 01626 854472 www.rcmotorhomes.co.uk

Dust Control Systems (DCS) has completed the installation and commissioning of a complete energy-saving dust extraction system for Seamers Specialist Joinery – renowned manufacturer of beautiful bespoke joinery for the high end residential market, with several notable and prestigious private commissions in its portfolio.

DCS ensures peak performance at Seamers Established in 1875 by John Seamer, J Seamer & Son Ltd has recently taken occupation of brand new 17,000ft2 premises on the outskirts of Derby, within 20 miles of the beautiful southern dales of the Peak District, the second most-visited national park in the world. The relocation was masterminded by managing director Richard Latham, who took over the reins at Seamers four years ago. Richard actually joined the company as an apprentice joiner in 1981 and is obviously passionate about the company, its products, and services. The new facility became a practical reality with assistance from the Derby Enterprise Growth Fund, and the company is expecting to increase its current workforce of 28, providing employment opportunities for local people. Seamers’ highly skilled workforce utilises an eclectic collection of specialist woodworking equipment, ranging from classical machinery through to a state-of-the-art six-head planer moulder, enabling the manufacture of joinery items in all shapes, sizes and quantities, and all finished in-house to ensure optimum quality control. The company manufactures to customers’ specific requirements, working with most timbers and sheet materials, including specialist veneers, and also offers its own comprehensive design service.

Seamers operates a wide range of machinery from classical to a high tech six-head planer moulder

DCS re-installed Seamers’ existing Ecogate system at the new premises

Seamers is a long-standing customer of Dust Control Systems, and Richard Latham contacted Andy Hives, company sales manager at DCS, to survey the new site and provide a quotation to install a complete dust extraction system at the purpose-built factory. Initially, the relocation plans included removal and re-installation of the company’s existing filter unit and Ecogate Extraction-on-Demand system. However, the imminent acquisition of additional high-speed machinery dictated the need for a replacement filter unit with increased capacity. Dust Control Systems installed an NFSZ3000 3HJLR filter unit, and the total scope of supply included installation of all new Gallito FastClip ductwork throughout, plus reconfiguration of the Ecogate system. The externally-sited modular filter unit is mounted at ground level, and twin rotary valves discharge waste, pressure-free, into a closedloop waste transfer system; delivering collected waste to an enclosed skip. DCS re-used Seamers’ existing 11kW waste conveying fan, but a new 30kW direct drive main dust extraction fan provides a total extraction capacity of 18,500m3/hr. Although the anticipated total extraction capacity requirement, with all machinery in use at the same time, would be over 26,000m3/hr, inclusion of the energy-saving Ecogate system, with automatic motorised gates fitted to all machines in the factory, means that extraction is only required when individual machines are in operation. With the diverse range of machining operations available to the craftsmen at Seamers, it was determined that the maximum extraction requirement at any one time would be just 18,500m3/hr. Ecogate motorised damper gates signal the Ecogate greenBOX 12+ controller to adjust

extraction fan speed to continually match the changing extraction requirement as machines come on- or off-line. Based on Seamers’ average production time of around 2000 hours per year, running the extraction at full power would consume over 50,000 kilowatt hours of electricity – with Ecogate continually optimising fan speed, consumption will be around half of that, saving the company in the region of £2500 per year on electricity bills. Return air ductwork is also included, allowing cleaned air to be returned to the building in winter, or be discharged to atmosphere in summer, by the manual operation of summer/ winter dampers. The filter unit is fitted with patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and the system also features a reverse air filter regeneration fan for filter cleaning. Explosion relief panels are fitted to the unit in compliance with ATEX requirements and, as recommended by ATEX regulations, a CARZ explosion isolation flap valve is also included in the system, preventing the effect of pressure wave and flames, in the event of an explosion, from travelling upstream in the ductwork in which it is mounted. “The service we received from Andy Hives and the team of engineers from DCS helped to ensure the relocation of our machinery was undertaken as smoothly as possible,” says Richard Latham. “We had invested in a new manufacturing facility that was fit for purpose, but we also needed to be able to maintain efficiency as our customer base grows – the extraction system we have now provides that assurance, and DCS conservatively predict that the installation will realise power savings of over 50%.” 0800 040 7116 www.DCSlimited.co.uk

The shop fitting industry is notoriously competitive, and when working with big names like Harrods, Selfridges, TopShop and Addidas, you need to be able to design and manufacture high quality products efficiently and within a short timeframe. To help achieve this, Hampshire-based commercial interiors specialist, Oakwood Shopfitting, has invested in its second Striebig vertical panel saw from machinery distributor, TM Machinery.

TM Machinery provides the right fit “Our vertical panel saw is the most used piece of equipment on our factory floor, running for up to 10 hours a day,” begins Steve Oliver, workshop manager at Oakwood Shopfitting. “We have between 12 and 14 joiners working on the floor at any one time and every single one of them favours the Striebig when cutting materials to size. “We even invested in a table saw in a bid to stop anyone waiting to use the vertical panel saw but with simple one-man handling and guaranteed accuracy, the Striebig is always the go-to machine in our workshop.” It’s this continual use and the company’s widening portfolio that has led to Oakwood Shopfitting replacing its 15-year-old Striebig ‘Compact’ with the very latest model. “The company has evolved in recent years, which has seen us build strong relationships with leading names in the commercial, retail, food and beverage sectors,” says Steve. “We’re not mass producers but we attract business because of our skill set and bespoke joinery

offering. So, when faced with replacing our favoured wall saw in order for us to keep up to date with the latest technology, it was an easy decision to swap the existing Striebig with a likefor-like model.” The new Compact 5207 – which boasts a cutting size of 4600 x 2070mm and a cutting depth of 60mm – has been installed to work primarily with Perspex, Plywood, MDF and solid timber. Featuring a digital readout, the new addition continues to save the company time and money. Steve explains: “Whist the Striebig comes with an upfront cost, it has paid for itself over a short period of time. A good example of this is the amount of skirting and architrave we produce with the saw. Many joiners would buy this from a merchant but because of the wide range of sizes we use and the sheer amount we need available to use, it’s considerably cheaper to produce it on the Striebig.” It’s also changed the way the company works. “It’s hard to say what we did before we owned

Prezzo Bournemouth

Greystar Nottinghill

FP296 pages.3.indd 43

a Striebig because we now use it on every project we win,” says Steve. “From working on Prezzo and Chimichanga chains to Next clothing stories, the Striebig has an important role to play. Even when we make doors, we cut panel holes out of the design using the vertical panel saw. “Years ago, we used to route out holes, which took a lot of time and it relied on a very accurate eye. Now, we can cut straight out of the middle with minimal fuss. And, as we’re able to cut materials four metres long by two metres high, we’re never restricted by the machine’s capabilities.” Oakwood Shopfitting also takes advantage of TM’s servicing package. “We invest heavily in our machinery and in order for them to run smoothly and efficiently, we service every piece of equipment annually. TM’s engineers specialise in traditional woodworking machinery so they take care of our edgebander, table saw, cross cutter, spindle moulder, sander and planers. This extra care pays for itself over time. “Unlike other companies we’ve worked with, they know the machines inside and out and can help us with even the smallest of problems. Having gained more than 20 years’ experience in the solid wood industry with CNC machining centres and supporting equipment, Homag announces its further expansion into this market sector with the launch of an exciting new range of industrial four sided planer/moulding machines.

Solid timber technology – a global first for Homag The new Mouldteq M-300 planer moulder for solid wood

The introduction of this genuinely unique profiling solution represented a real milestone in the company’s history and enables Homag to offer a full range of solid wood processing machines to the joinery sector. Simon Brooks, Homag UK’s managing director explains: “The launch of the Mouldteq M-300 series (previously known as LPP 300 series) emphasises Homag’s dedication to offer high quality machinery for every stage of the solid wood processing chain. “The ever-increasing complex designs of window profiles, intricate machining details of door frames and the demand for smaller batch sizes are significant

challenges manufacturers face. Remaining competitive is centred on the sheer quality of the finished product and the ability to produce it efficiently. That’s why it’s so important that the solid timber is planed to the highest possible standard, creating the perfect quality foundation ahead of the next stage of production. “The Mouldteq M-300 series is a real game changer for small- to medium-sized manufacturers. Homag has taken what is considered a very traditional piece of machinery and created a solution that combines stateof-the-art technology with solid mechanical engineering.” Offering a high level of flexibility,

“The introduction of planer moulders to the Homag range is a clear indication to the growth strategy for the company” – Simon Brooks

FP296 pages.3.indd 44

Homag’s Mouldteq M-300 planer moulders deliver not only variable feed speeds from 6-24m/min but also variable spindle speeds. Each spindle can be individually programmed between 40008000rpm. This particular design feature is driven by the singular motors dedicated to each spindle, whereby operators can control each head to create optimal workpiece quality. The Mouldteq M-300 series for solid wood focuses highly on profile processing, offering various performance classes throughout the range which are equipped with five, six, seven or even eight spindles. Each model is equipped with tool management and Homag’s own proLock spindle clamp system, allowing for quick set-ups and efficient machine operation. In keeping with the Homag standard, the Mouldteq M-300 series is powerTouch-operated – a truly unique feature in the moulder industry. Established as the

operating philosophy of Homag, this system unites design and function in a new generation of control systems. Easy, ergonomic and user friendly – with just a few touches, the operator can efficiently load and select processing programs on the 21.5in widescreen interactive monitor. Simon Brooks concludes: “The introduction of planer moulders to the Homag range is a clear indication to the growth strategy for the company and its continuous commitment to offer customers all solutions for wood processing from a single source – for both the joinery and panel sectors. Since the launch of the Mouldteq M-300 series, they have attracted great interest from the crowds and we have since received countless enquiries for the new Homag range.” For more information on the Mouldteq M-300 series range or to arrange a demonstration, call Homag UK on 01332 856424. homag.com

Latham’s latest décors have the X factor James Latham, UK distributor of the exclusive, high-end decorative panel Xylocleaf, has just announced the addition of 13 brand new décors to its range. Already available in more than 80 different styles and finishes including wood grains and linens, this latest collection has seen the range of laminate décors bolstered to 52, offering an even greater choice to architects, interior designers, furniture makers and specifiers looking to add dimension, depth and texture to projects. Xylocleaf is already extremely popular for premium commercial, retail and leisure specifications as it is strong, durable and highly scratch and chemical resistant, so as well as looking great, it is particularly well suited for high traffic areas.

FP296 pages.3.indd 46

These features also make Xylocleaf a popular choice for residential applications as it can be used to manufacture all kinds of interior furniture from worktops and cupboard doors in kitchens and bathrooms to tables, desks, shelving, wall panelling and even internal doors. Because the surfaces are made in the form of panels, laminate sheets and matching ABS edge banding, textures, finishes and colours can be blended, allowing different parts of a commercial or residential design scheme to feature matching or contrasting items, creating a fluid and contemporary finish throughout. Paul Morson, James Latham’s group product champion for melamine says: ”Xylocleaf represents a new generation of panel product for us and one which offers extraordinary potential,

delivering a complete solution of innovative products to suit all decorative tastes, trends and applications. “Created and manufactured in Milan and unlike anything else on the UK market, it has quickly become a real success story for James Latham. Our customers really love working with it and the end result is outstanding. “And with the addition of 13 new décors, I can see even more interest and specifications coming through from our A&D customers.” The new collection sees the addition of such distinctive and striking finishes as Ares, Matrix, Maloja, Esperia and Concreta. Samples can be obtained by contacting your local James Latham depot and details can be found online. www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Tests on the new nesting engine, unveiled in Alphacam 2018 R2, show a 17% improvement in material yield.

Best-in-class results from Alphacam’s new nesting engine Using proprietary technology to deliver what brand manager, Hector Henry, says are bestin-class geometry, toolpath optimisation and part handling, the new nesting engine also provides faster calculation times, along with improved feedback and graphics. And he says the overall theme of the latest release is to save time and improve productivity. Parametric Rules have now been migrated to C# and have an enhanced GUI and functionality, allowing for greater control, improved UX and simpler, more streamlined, logic statements, which he says has improved productivity and reliability. The Face Milling Cycle has been enhanced, and is now part of Alphacam’s Core Functionality, creating intelligent toolpaths, allowing user-to-face (surface) mill irregular and multiple geometries. “This improves productivity, as the user doesn’t need to create several operations to achieve the same result,” says Hector. Productivity has also been improved through the new Order by Intersecting Geometry function which saves significant time when ordering the sequence of a complex job. It works by letting the user select a previously created geometry to define the order of geometries or toolpaths, based on those which intersect the selected geometry first.

The Parametric Sketcher is now considerably more powerful, thanks to an updated UI, meaning the window can be resized. “This provides greater visibility over the Parameters and Actions list, which will be essential for managing complex projects,” says Hector. There are also improvements to the Sketcher’s geometry creation tools, for creating fillets and chamfers as part of the Geometry creation tool set. This improves productivity as it does away with the need to calculate those points. Enhancements to Alphacam’s dimensioning system provide greater clarity when printing and

presenting information. User-defined suffixes for both the primary and alternate units – as well as a scale factor – mean that two separate values can now be displayed. Importing CAD models has been updated through the support of SolidWorks configurations. “Alphacam now has a new interface for users to select which configuration of an assembly to import, without the need to ascertain that the last version saved in SolidWorks matches the one they want,” says Hector. www.alphacam.com

Better is the enemy of good Until now dull matt and extremely scratch resistant lacquer surfaces could only be achieved through laborious drying methods (high-energy UV or EBH radiation, baking, etc.). We have now changed that. Our Hesse HYDRO-PUR MATO HDU 54200 makes it possible even at room temperature, i.e. without extra drying effort. A single spray application on a real wood surface with a clear base coat or a surface with a colour lacquer base coat is sufficient. Then allow it to dry at room temperature and it’s ready. MATO can be applied both manually using a cup gun and by sprayer (airless or air-mix). Its dull matt surface is also convincing due to a soft-touch effect combined with high chemical and mechanical resistance. It not only scores well due to its looks, but the feel of this new lacquer system is so persuasive it adds extra value in and of itself. >>more on page 2

Hesse COLOR READER Do you know the situation from a customer conversation: having to choose colour tones at short notice to match a sample? For instance your customer would like a component to be coated in the colour of their carpet. The difficulty here is finding the right tone from a multitude of colour tone templates. Hesse now has a very smart colour search device – the COLOR READER. It fits into every handbag or trouser pocket. The device measures the desired sample within 1 second; this equates to a time saving of over 90 % compared to conventional colour tone searches using colour cards. The data is then transmitted via Bluetooth to an Apple or Android smartphone. The app then searches through the Hesse database and the best match of colour tone is displayed on your smartphone with the Hesse product number. The colour data is stored in the Hesse Cloud and currently contains around 5000 colour tones including RAL Classic, RAL Design and NCS S. The app also provides a timeline and the option of creating a file structure. Hesse currently offers the COLOR READER as a small compact colour search device with very good measurement results at a recommended retail price of 279 euros plus VAT. It is a superb aid in finding colour card tones.

An informative and humorous video has been produced dealing with the use of the COLOUR READER. It can be found on the Hesse video channel at YouTube or via the Hesse website: www.hesse-lignal.de > COLOR READER. Or even directly via this QR code:

2018 marks a milestone in the history of Mighton Products. Founded in 1983 and led by chairman Mike Derham, the window and door hardware specialist has come from humble beginnings and seen some incredible highlights during the past 35 years.

Mighton celebrates 35 years Beginning his career as a joiner himself, predominantly refurbishing and producing timber sash windows, Mike Derham quickly became aware of how poor the quality of hardware seemed to be in the industry. With an aim to right the wrongs, Mighton Products was born, and as Mike explains, continues to evolve and build on its strengths. “Throughout our 35-year history, Mighton has always remained committed to continual investment into research and development and the company’s growth. Our product ranges have diversified greatly over the years and following significant investments we have expanded in to new areas, including workshop machinery for our professional joiners, such as the Mighton X-Cut and Scribe-It machines. Additionally, through a solid partnership with Netherlands-based paint specialists Anker Stuey Verven BV, we have developed and brought the Mighton Anker Stuy paints and stains range to the UK market, which has, so far, received glowing reviews. “Growth is not only evident in our products, but our people and premises too. The steadily growing Mighton team is made up of many long-standing employees and we remain as close knit today as when the company first began. “Our investment in our team has seen the recent appointments of marketing director Jim Herrington, who is helping to take the Mighton brand to the next level through an updated website and new catalogues as the product offering expands, and David Lambert joined the company last year as warehouse manager. David’s appointment came following our significant investment in a new on-site warehouse facility, constructed to support and

meet our growing product range and customer demand. “Of course, without our loyal customers we wouldn’t be celebrating this milestone, and we are proud to work alongside such specialists in the joinery industry, some for many years.” A customer of Mighton’s since the early days is Malton-based Norton Joinery, which believe Mighton is a stand-out brand in the window ironmongery market. “Mighton do not stand still and over the years have continued to improve and develop products, earning their reputation as a market leader in the industry, predominantly with their sash window hardware,” explains director Mark Fairweather. “With 43 years in the industry, we like to think we manufacture a quality product and believe using ironmongery from Mighton complements our product.”

Another industry leader keen to congratulate Mighton is British Woodworking Federation (BWF) chief executive Iain McIlwee. “The wood products manufacturing sector has evolved from providing wood components to fully finished construction products, and the supply chain and companies such as Mighton are intrinsic to this transformation. “The BWF has enjoyed a long relationship with Mighton, who regularly get involved in our technical meeting, contributing to the debate and sharing their considerable knowledge. They learn from the challenges that the industry faces and develop solutions and services to support the modern woodworking business. We very much look forward to working with Mighton for the next 35 years to ensure that our sector continues to go from strength to strength.” www.mightonproducts.com

Phillipson sanding for industry – smooth transition for specialist UK manufacturer The Phillipson Sanding machine range, designed and originally built by the former Phillipson family business in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, was transferred some years ago to the Daltons Wadkin manufacturing facility in Nottingham. Other than that, little has changed. The range which incorporates disc, linisher-belt and contour-belt sanders, initially supplied largely to the pattern making industry, are now marketed far and wide by Daltons Wadkin to a diverse cross-section of manufacturers which include the Aerospace industry, Formula 1 racing teams, several prestige car makers, the London Underground, high profile vacuum cleaner production lines and a host of other engineering processes, as well as the more traditional pattern and other wood trades. It is the heavy duty build quality and precision which marks these sanders out from the general run of imported alternatives – the machines using the same heavy base designs and matching or even improving on the same strict tolerances achieved by Mr Phillipson in Gainsborough. Sanding disc machines are currently manufactured in sizes 16- 24- and 30in diameter in single- or double-disc modules and a combination disc/belt configuration is also offered incorporating a 16in disc and 6in wide horizontal/vertical belt. The contour belt model features a vertical belt travelling at selected speeds over a choice of flat or rounded radius profile bars supported by a heavy cast iron base and worktable. Daltons Wadkin build the machines to order but full details and specifications reference all the models can be obtained from the sales team or from the company’s website 0115 986 5201 www.daltonswadkin.com

Homag’s complete range of finishing solutions for all manufacturers As part of Homag’s large catalogue of innovative technology, it has developed a range of automated solutions which handle the complete finishing process from start to finish. Simon Brooks, managing director, Homag UK explains: “Homag’s range of automated finishing solutions has been designed to shorten production times, increase finish quality and lower production costs. “We have spent the last few years building a finishing range which starts at entry level size but then leads up to high end industrial lines. Now, even the smallest of manufacturers can change their processes from hand spraying to automated production in a very cost-effective way. With easy payment terms available through Homag Finance, we now have high quality finishing solutions accessible to all sizes of manufacturers.” Sandteq W-200/300 models – high performance sanding with a selection of heads The Sandteq W-200/300 models are high performance wide-belt sanding machines which produce a first class surface finish within a compact footprint. The machines efficiently perform calibration and fine sanding of solid wood and wooden materials as well as veneer and lacquer sanding up to full panel

Sprayteq S-100 spray coating machine – consistent high quality finish

widths of 1350mm. The Sandteq SWT 200/300 are constant pass line machines which means the feed table height is constant providing a more heavyduty and reliable solution. The machines all feature automatic thickness adjustment from 3-200mm and a constant working height (900mm) via adjustment of the upper frame of the machine. Workpieces are fed into the machine on a variable speed (315m/min), high quality multi-ply conveyor belt. The parts are guided through the machine with springloaded rubberised pressure rollers positioned close to the sanding heads. The Sandteq 200/300 models

FP296 pages.3.indd 64

offer a choice of four heads which can be specified in single- and twinhead configurations to give seven different machine combinations. All the heads feature a simplified head locking system which enables quick and simple changing of sanding belts. Each machine in the range is controlled via a 7in colour touchscreen. This makes the operation of the Sandteq 200/300 models simple and quick for operators. Sprayteq S-100 – consistent high quality results The Sprayteq S-100 was specifically designed with both small- and medium-sized companies in mind. Equipped with a reciprocating arm and four spray guns, it features a fully automated vacuum conveyor belt to transport workpieces for ultimate flexibility and throughput efficiency. The Sprayteq S-100 can be used as both a stand-alone spray machine or as part of an extensive finishing line. The integration of an automated paint application system ensures that a high quality finish is continuously achieved. It also reduces the amount of overspray waste and offers a significant costsaving investment for businesses. The cost efficiencies are also boosted via the Sprayteq S-100’s intelligent workpiece detection system. A high resolution light grid accurately identifies the contours of each part, precisely controlling the paint flow of the individual spray guns.

The Sprayteq S-100 can provide consistently high quality painting or lacquering for up to 2400 parts per shift. It not only reduces paint exposure for operators, but also eases workload pressure produced when using a traditional manual paint applicator. Equipped with a complete throughfeed transport belt, workpieces are effortlessly fed into the spray booth on individual trays. Once the spraying process is complete, the parts continue to be conveyed out of the machine to the end of the belt. Designed to transport even the smallest of parts, this model expands the opportunity of production possibilities. Furthermore, the largest of production volumes can be achieved on the Sprayteq S-100 by doubling both the automated concepts of loading and unloading. The use of a two-way loading function at both sides of the machine delivers an almost selfsufficient concept, significantly increasing production efficiency. Simon concludes: “Here at Homag, we pride ourselves on being able to offer our range of innovative solutions to companies of all sizes. Our knowledgeable sales team is always available to discuss our range of finishing machines and will help you determine the best fit for your production needs. “For more information or a demonstration of either machine, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424.” www.homag.com

KundigJ

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

Lauren Anderson, group marketing manager of the Saveheat Group comments: “As a leading UK manufacturer, high quality is extremely important to us, therefore we require wood coatings that we can trust to provide excellence and longevity for our customers.” She went on to add: “The AkzoNobel Sikkens range of products we use more than meets the high benchmarks we constantly set.” The varied manufacturing and installations undertaken by Blairs throughout the year creates an on-going need for a wide-ranging selection of quality coatings that can provide the overall standards and finishing required. Therefore it’s no surprise that Sikkens high quality joinery products are used by Blairs for a host of projects. It’s a supply partnership between AkzoNobel Sikkens and Blairs which works extremely well. A shining example of a project using AkzoNobel Sikkens products – that ultimately went on to win an award for Blairs – was the transformation of the Dunlop Estate

Manor House in rural Ayrshire, Scotland. The ancestral home of Clan Dunlop, it was built in 1834 and stayed in the family until the last direct descendant passed away. It eventually fell into disuse and was listed as a Category A building by Historic Scotland. In 2014, Laurel Homes began the task of restoring the house and estate to its original splendour. The manor house underwent major renovations and was refurbished into nine luxurious apartments. Douglas Anderson, business development manager at Blairs Timber Windows comments: “The restoration included Blairs’ sash and case windows to reinstate the original window types and configurations and be a key feature in returning the building to its former glory. Blairs’ client opted for windows factory finished with AkzoNobel Sikkens coatings to ensure a durable and quality finish.” The development was awarded Renovation of the Year at the Scottish Property Awards. The AkzoNobel Sikkens ranges used by Blairs includes some well-known products and includes Sikkens Cetol WP 566 – a waterborne, translucent primer for wooden constructions made of pine and hardwood. Perfect for exterior and interior applications with good run-off properties, great colouring characteristics and providing high levels of UV protection, it is a boon in assisting the longevity of certain projects. Translucent, colour tints come from the Sikkens Joinery Colour Classics collection. A key benefit is that all translucent colours can be mixed with each other. Sikkens Cetol WF 952 with Duraflex Technology is a

waterborne, translucent, satin matt mid- and top-coat spray application for wooden constructions which provides high UV protection for exterior and interior applications. Sikkens Cetol WF 952 virtually eliminates blocking, is quicker hard drying and has improved impact resistance. It also delivers excellent adhesion to suitably base-stained timber and as an added bonus, is moisture vapour permeable and provides superb bright translucency. Sikkens Cetol WF 952 also has good mechanical and weather resistance with long-term elasticity and durability. It’s tested according to DIN EN 71 Part 3 Safety of Toys. Translucent, colour tints come from the Sikkens Joinery Colour Classics collection. It’s ideal for stable and semi-stable and wooden components. An integral element of this topquality quartet of products is the Sikkens Rubbol WP 198 (Aqua Primer 205) waterborne sprayable white primer. The company says it is ideal for mid-coat applications for wooden constructions made of pinewood and delivers isolating properties against discolouring wood extractives and that it is suitable for exterior and interior usage. It provides high filling properties with low-odour and has good sanding values. The AkzoNobel Wood Coatings Exterior collection of high quality products also delivers a highperforming topcoat collection with Sikkens Rubbol WF 382 which has Duraflex Technology, delivering optimal durability whilst demonstrating long-term elasticity. It also provides high resistance to cracking, premium UV protection through innovative new light stabilisers and has excellent resistance against the impact of extreme weather. Lauren Anderson ended by saying: “We have always found AkzoNobel’s Sikkens wood coatings to be a perfect fit for the high standards our business requires and have been using their products for seven years with highly positive results.” Further details on the company’s products and specifications and to see the list of UK and Ireland distributors can be found on the company’s website. 01254 687950 www.sikkens-wood-coatings.co.uk

SANDING & FINISHING 69

The DMC Eurosystem has been upgraded compared to the previous Eurosand L model, with the choice of fitting high range sanding and thicknessing technologies on machines which require less demanding investments. The new solution is fitted with a crossways unit that can be positioned at the infeed, to pre-sand the unfinished piece, or at the outfeed for precision finishing.

DMC Eurosystem, the innovative solution of the Finesand orbitating pad The resulting machine is extremely flexible, completely modular and can house the units required by the user. All the modularity, all the technology and all the possibilities of top-of-the-range machines are made available to a wider public, bringing extremely efficient technology to less mature markets. The Finesand orbitating pad is the innovative solution for the precision finishing of crossgrained products and composite materials. The machining unit uses a sanding pad with a very large contact area, that operates on the panel with an orderly movement, resulting from the combination of two rotations that eliminate crossways scratches, rendering the abrasion homogenous across the whole sanding area. Moreover the combination of the action of the Finesand unit with the action of the units on the DMC System, in particular with the Planetario unit, ensures excellent finishing results on an industrial scale.

FP296 pages.3.indd 69

The exclusivity of finishes thanks to the carving unit In order to compete in today’s market it is essential to provide customers with products that have superior specifications enabling them to manufacture exclusive products. In the furniture sector, quality and aesthetic components require a strategic position to achieve success. DMC has, since its beginning, focused on this target with continuous research and development aimed to improve products’ quality for the System range of flexible sanders and it has created a series of technology innovations, unique to the industry, enabling customers to produce high quality textures and surface finishes. Recent technologies aimed at texturing solid wood and related materials are some examples of development and research: these new technologies allow users to achieve finishes found in artisan products that will enhance

the raw nature of wood by introducing surface textures such as Band Saw Cutting Effect, Worm-Hole Effect and the Carving Effect, longitudinal and transversal Waves Effect, as well as the widest variety of distressing and brushing effects. The carving unit is the super advanced technology developed by DMC (patent requested), a multifunctional solution creating the look of a truly carved surface on solid wood, veneer and MDF. This technology can be applied to many application sectors such as parquet flooring, home furniture and internal wall manufacturing. The innovative carving unit, allows the reproduction on an industrial scale of the artisan finishing effects obtained with a hand scraping tool. This highly in-demand finish emulates manual woodworking processes and provides an authentic and valuable characteristic to wooden furniture.

70 SANDING & FINISHING

www.furnitureproduction.net

The system of vertical and transversal tool movements allows users to freely reproduce unlimited carving effects that differ in depth, direction and shape of the pattern grooves. Any effect can easily be achieved due to the translation system which is controlled by brushless servomotors, that guarantee fast and precise movements, and the Hydra-PC control that allows for simple and intuitive programming of the machining unit.

For the finishing of cabinet doors or MDF internal walls, the machine is programmed with synchronised movements of the various operating units which grants the reproduction of repetitive trajectories. In this way, real drawings can be realised even with the 3D effect that is much appreciated by the market. Inside a single machine, the carving units can be paired with abrasive brushes units. It is possible to realise configurations that, in just one step, allow the creation of 3D surfaces, followed by sanding, making the panel ready for painting, laminating, papering or veneering.

The complete modularity of the System range allows end users to freely combine machining units to achieve the most varied effects and to replace them quickly and economically to adapt the machine composition to market requirements. The innovative range of DMC System sanders has been designed and constructed as a veritable technological container capable of housing up to 10 machining units in a single machine, resulting in an extremely advanced solution that can meet even the most complex surface effect requirements. www.scm.com

Hranipex joint optimisation

Hranipex has over 20 distinct types of hotmelt EVA and PUR adhesives

Hranipex is working closer than ever to help furniture producers achieve the perfect finish on their work, and we understand the importance of delivering perfect furniture without excessive costs. Hranipex UK has recently appointed Jamie McKendrick as their business development manager for adhesives and cleaners, providing the company with an advantage in the field: “We can help improve the overall quality, support with regular hints and tips, and most importantly, we can take away the fear of change.” Hranipex retails its own range of hotmelt EVA and PUR adhesives, and with over 20 distinct types it says it can provide the perfect solution for any edgebanding machine. The focus is not purely on the quality of

the finish – Hranipex can also support with estimating how much glue is needed for each project which prevents customers from overordering helping to save costs. “We have discovered that many edgebanding users are not working with the best glue for their machine,” says Jamie, “perhaps it is what was delivered or recommended at the time, but have never tried something new. We look at very specific areas to ensure the perfect solution.” As well as EVA and PUR hotmelt there is also a full range of dispersive adhesives relevant to the furniture manufacturing industry. These range from standard PVAc D3 to expansive PUR, spray contact adhesive, double-sided tapes and also silicones. With all the glue, there is usually some mess,

and Hranipex has got that covered with what it says is an exceptional cleaner offering. With Riepe cleaners for the edgebander itself in 10- to 30-litre containers, Hranipex also has its own range of manual cleaners, the Hraniclean 01 for routine use and the impressive Hraniclean 08 for use on gloss and sensitive surfaces. All products can be delivered within 24 hours from our Birmingham-based warehouse. Customers can place orders 24/7 via its online shop at www.hranipex.co.uk and the office in Birmingham is open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, or feel free to contact Jamie on 07713 566927, jamie.mckendrick@hranipex.com. 0121 767 9180 uk-hranipex@hranipex.com www.hranipex.co.uk

All wrapped up When wrapping wood-based profiles – anything from MDF to pine – with paper, vinyl, or decorative materials, it’s worth catching up with a brand new development from Kleiberit that can help cut costs as well as maintaining product quality, even with difficult-to-wrap materials and challenging profiles. PUR HM Kleiberit 702 range of profile wrapping adhesives is well proven, and for several years, 702.5 in particular has been a core product for manufacturers from around the world working with anything from architraves to skirtings and profiles used in kitchens.

Kleiberit’s new PUR HM adhesive has very good processing characteristics that works well with many materials like paper, PVC and other foils

FP296 pages.3.indd 74

The 702 range includes viscosity grades for demanding materials that are perfect for more delicate materials with a very low softening point, or vinyls with a low overall thickness that can easily stretch during manufacturing. But with its new 702.8 grade – launched at HolzHandwerk, Germany, and promoted strongly on the stand at Xylexpo in Italy – Kleiberit has come up with a winning formula that it says will really appeal to those servicing the most costconscious sectors of the profiles market. “We have just released a new product called 702.8.08,” comments Kleiberit’s Wolfgang Hormuth. “It’s a new PUR HM adhesive which has very good processing characteristics that works well with many materials like paper, PVC and other foils. This product has good application characteristics at a very attractive price, but we’ve managed to achieve that without any reduction in the performance of the product. It has been run through industrial processes and has performed extremely well from high gloss foil wrapping up to veneer wrapping. “In the past, we have always offered different products for foil, paper and veneer. The new 702.8.08 product will work with many types of substrates and works on wrapping machinery from single profile wrapping machines to complete surface lamination lines that are equipped with slot nozzle technology.”

Aside from the attractive price, the key advantages you’ll benefit from with Kleiberit 702.8.08 include a very high green strength with pronounced tackiness, heat resistance to over 150 degrees celcius and cold resistance down to -40°. “The 702.8.08 product is also sustainable,” adds Bradly Larkan, Kleiberit’s general manager for the UK, Ireland and South Africa. “The supply chain, availability of raw materials and our stock holding around the world means everything is geared for customer satisfaction, allowing us to meet the requirements of the marketplace whilst offering manufacturers an economical, costeffective option. We pride ourselves on being able to offer a specific technical product offering and this product is no exception. Kleiberit’s new 702.8 grade was launched at HolzHandwerk, Germany, and promoted strongly on its stand at Xylexpo in Italy

“Every market is looking for a product that performs at the highest level for the decorative materials they are wrapping. However, in the UK, most manufacturers want to achieve standards set by the FIRA Institute. In order for us to fully service this market, the new 702.8.08 range complies with the test methods used to meet the requirements set by FIRA.” Like the other products in the 702 range, Kleiberit’s 702.8.08 is available in 1.8kg, 20kg and 190kg packaging options and is already available for immediate delivery from Kleiberit’s Coalville warehouse. For more technical information, contact Kleiberit UK 01530 836699 www.kleiberit.com

Ney adds to its EBM range of edgebanders Many of the Ney’s smaller customers have always admired and aspired to its range of EBM machines, but due to space considerations, were forced into alternative choices. The new KDP 100 machine now fits the bill. Measuring only 2500mm long, it is ideally suited to the smaller workshop. Whilst smaller in stature, the KDP 100 does not compromise on quality and performance borrowing the glue pot, end trim saws and top and bottom trim stations from the KDP 200 and 400 machines. Even the tape table is full-sized meaning a full roll of 2mm edging can be used without problems. With pre-sets for fast changeover from thick to thin tape and EBM’s legendary build quality it’s well worth a visit to Ney’s InHouse Show where the machine can be seen demonstrated. In terms of quantities sold, the EBM KDP 400 edgebander is proving to be the most popular EBM machine built at the moment. With premilling, end-trim saws top and bottom trim, corner-rounding, scraping and buffing, the 400 represents excellent value for money and adheres to the EBM mantra of attention to detail, and most importantly for edgebanders, consistent quality of finish. With about half of UK manufacturers either currently nesting panels – or moving towards that process – the ability to edgeband the pre-drilled panels perfectly is becoming more important. The nesting option on the KDP 400 eliminates the risk of the trimmers and scrapers dipping into the edge and producing an inferior panel. So whether manufacturers are nesting already or planning to go that way in the future, this exceptionally well-specified machine is a worthy option – and comparing the results, price for price with any other machine on the market, Ney believes buyers will not find it lacking. Ney asserts that it is no exaggeration to say that the EBM 110 series edgebanders lead the class in terms of reliability and performance. Countless machines are running throughout the UK and Ireland with what the Coventry firm says is an unprecedented degree of customer satisfaction. The new Airtronic Excel machine combines all the best that EBM has to offer in one machine, with pre-milling, end trim saws, double top and bottom trim with flat and profile scraping and buffers. Sounds good so far? Now add panel protection and cleaning sprays – and it just gets better! Then add the Airtronic seamless edging option, which gives a perfect joint every time, and it gets exciting. To top it off, the Airtronic Excel is all enclosed in a new, roomier hood with vertical sliding access doors and a motorised pressure beam. www.ney.co.uk

84 EDGEBANDING

www.furnitureproduction.net

Since 1962, when Homag introduced the world’s first edge banding machine based on the hot-cold process, the advances made in technology and production have been incredible. These developments have resulted in extremely high demands from customers who now expect to get invisible joint quality edging on all their furniture.

Invisible joint edge banding solutions from Homag Simon Brooks, managing director at Homag UK explains: “For over 55 years the Homag Group has been at the forefront of edge bander product development. During that time, it has launched many ‘firsts’ into the market including laserTec and more recently airTec. Now, we can offer invisible joint technology for any size of manufacturing business, from entry level through to high volume industrial production.” The airTec system Following on from the success of laserTec (first seen in 2009), Homag introduced the airTec technology in 2015. The airTec system uses hot air and special edge material to form an invisible or zero-joint. The special edge material consists of a hard décor layer backed with a meltable functional layer. This functional layer is melted by the hot air and then pressed onto the panel edge. The airTec process is very clean and cost-effective and results in perfectly crafted products, where

joints are no longer visible. The airTec system is available across Homag’s full range of edge banders allowing even the smaller business to compete in the invisible joint market where frontals, such as doors and drawers, need to be of a very high standard. Entry level airTec solutions The Homag Edgeteq S-240/300 models are robust entry level edge banders that offer a high performance solution for bespoke workshops. These compact, affordable models provide a high degree of automation with minimal footprint. They handle workpieces up to 60mm thick and can bond coil edge tapes up to 3mm thick or 8mm in strips. All the models use the intuitive powerTouch control system and offer highly flexible configurations to enable the tailoring of the machines to exact requirements. The Edgeteq S-240/300 models come equipped with a pre-milling unit for optimum edge joint quality,

Homag’s in-house manufactured airTec system, end snipping saws front and rear, a trimming unit with DFC tool technology for maximum dust extraction, a contour trimming unit for optimum corner rounding as well as scraping and buffering units for the perfect finish. and can be used with or without a joint trimming unit. The extensive range of modules, meanwhile, makes tailoring the machines for specific requirements easy. For automation, the Loopteq return systems provide the ideal complement to the Edgeteq S-380/390/500 profiLine machines, increasing productivity, eliminating damage from handling errors and allowing time for quality control. Industrial airTec solutions The Homag Edgeteq S-500 series edge banders offer comprehensive equipment as standard, providing

higher performance with and without empty slots. The feed speeds range from 16-30m/min and all the models deliver a high level of flexibility processing high-gloss, melamine, PVC, nesting workpieces with, for example, hinge holes, solid strips and, in the case of some models, veneer edges. With a steel belt-type top pressure unit, the Edgeteq S-500 series edge banders guarantee precise workpiece guidance at high feed speeds. Automation and further functionality can be added on an individual basis for these machines. As with the ProfiLine series, Loopteq return equipment provides a productivity boost by making it easy for a single operator to run the machine. Alpha Tape Zero PP sales continue to grow for Warwick Edging Having made the decision back in 2016 to invest into stocking a new range of purposeproduced edgebandings for the zero joint seamless edge markets, Warwick Edging now has over 115 décors in stock available in a variety of widths (14 to 400mm) and thicknesses (1.2 and 2.2mm) all of which are a true co-extruded zero joint technology edgebanding, unlike others available where a traditional ABS edgebanding is used and then post-coated or post-extruded. The key to Warwick Edging’s success in this market has been the harder co-extruded functional layer MKT has created as well as the time and care taken in ensuring all the UK’s popular décors are perfectly colour matched and held in stock here in the UK. The advantage of the harder co-extruded PP functional layer is that it truly eliminates any existence of what could appear as a glue line giving a completely seamless edge. For example, dirt cannot penetrate the harder functional layer as it can in soft versions, the functional layer is perfectly matched to the top layer, there is no primer between the layers, and both layers have the same milling properties. All of MKT’s Alpha Tape Zero is produced by the calender method and then supplied to Warwick Edging in jumbo rolls 405mm wide, which can then be slit on site in Warwick to the desired width between 14mm and 400mm. All stock décors and dimensions – as with all of Warwick Edging’s other edgebandings – are available in quantities of 1m+, and if ordered before 4pm can be delivered next day. For more information on Warwick Edging’s Alpha Tape Zero PP edgebanding or any other edgebanding types, contact the office. 01926 408954 info@warwickedging.com www.warwickedging.com

Why PP over ABS? • Hot air technology uses extremely hot compressed air to activate the functional layer and fuse it onto the board. Polypropylene (PP) does not shrink during cooling like other plastics • PP uses less energy in production and when burned produces only carbon dioxide and water • PP has almost no stress whitening and a very high colourfast

What’s the difference between a used and Ferwood Approved machine? You’ll be forgiven for thinking they are the same thing but for used machinery specialist, Ferwood, rigorous processes and stringent attention to detail transform their reconditioned machinery into a class of its own. Proving it’s really what is under the paintwork that counts, Ferwood has lifted the lid on its unique ten-step process to show what it really means to buy a Ferwood Approved machine.

Lifting the lid on used machinery Based in Pollenzo, Italy, Ferwood’s premises span over 200,000ft2, with each section stringently categorised by its function and machine type. As well as an impressive showroom which homes completed machines, separate areas have been designed for handling, cleaning, sanding and painting, edgebanding, cutting, drilling and routing. Each area plays a vital role in the machine’s restoration process and guarantees each machine, regardless of its make or model, benefits from an intensive programme. The 10-step process begins with an evaluation of the customer’s technical and manufacturing requirements. Kelvin Wilkins, sales and marketing manager at Ferwood Group explains: “For us, this involves us using our technical knowledge and industry know-how to find the best possible solution for our customers. What does the company need to achieve from its Ferwood Approved machine? What budget has been allocated and what timeframe does the customer need to work in? “These are really important questions, especially when faced with a busy factory floor. But for us, listening to our customers is second nature and by working together, we can source and install the best machine for them in the most efficient way.” Step two takes place in the Ferwood factory. Here, it’s disassembled, thoroughly cleaned and painted. Step three and four follow, as engineers replace any worn parts and check all mechanical, electrical, electronic and pneumatic components. The fifth stage sees a thorough inspection and upgrade of safety devices is carried out. Then, in step six, any software upgrades and technical changes required by the customer are made.

FP296 pages.3.indd 88

“It’s at this stage, step seven in the Ferwood ten-step process, that we ask our customer to supply samples in order for us to complete a test run,” explains Kelvin. “This is a fantastic way of showing our customers exactly what they can expect from the machine. By using their own panels and components, we can create an exact replica of their product in real time. This highlights the machine’s capabilities and the results they can expect from a Ferwood Approved machine on their factory floor.” Step eight is delivery to the customer and step nine is a final check to ensure the machine has been provided with appropriate software, tools and manuals – and these are often written or sourced by Ferwood’s maintenance team. But, in true Ferwood style, there is one final step to complete in order for the machine to be Ferwood Approved. Once the machine is installed by Ferwood’s technicians on your factory floor, a final inspection takes place to ensure the machine is running smoothly in its new environment. A final test run, using the customer’s materials, and employee training completes the tenstep process.

“This demanding step-by-step plan proves that Ferwood Approved machines offer you much more than a lick of paint – something you may not have been expecting to hear from a second-hand machinery supplier,” explains Kelvin. “We have every confidence in our machines and that’s why we offer a six-month warranty absolutely free with every Ferwood Approved machine we sell. We actively promote trips to our factory because we know that by seeing the process for yourself, you can see just how dedicated we are to supplying high quality, reconditioned machines that are designed to last.” 0113 286 6689 www.ferwoodmachinery.co.uk Twitter @WoodMacSol

New all-in-one CNC crosscut and drilling machine from JJ Smith Camam, part of the Comec group of companies, has recently introduced a new model of angular CNC controlled crosscut saw equipped with a vertical point-to-point drilling head and vertical hopper feed loading system. JJ Smith says this machine is ideal for cutting and drilling of furniture rails, chair corner blocks and parts for children’s outdoor play equipment. In addition it can be used for aluminium window/ door profiles and working with recycled plastics. What use to be two separate operations of cutting and drilling are now combined and integrated on one single machine. The TAC CNX 1U as standard has a sawblade that can angle automatically through the program +/-60°, and in addition has a five spindle point to point vertical drill gearbox, which is controlled in three axis by the CN. The result

Camam model TAC CNX 1U combines automatic cross cut saw with NC point-to-point drilling

FP296 pages.3.indd 90

Examples of some drilled and cut parts – straight or angled cutting

is that the machine can be programmed to cut different length, different angled parts with different hole configurations from one length of timber. Thanks to the vertical hopper feed loader with a length capacity of 3m – or longer on request – the machine has a fully automatic cycle of feeding, drilling, cutting and ejection of the piece. This means the TAC can be part of a production cell with the possibility of just one operator running two or three machines together. The saw has a 4kW motor with the cutting speed adjustable through an inverter up to 4000rpm, while the advancement speed of the feeding pincers is also adjustable up to 60m/min. The machine can accept workpiece sections 10-200mm wide and 10-80mm in thickness. For programming, the TAC is equipped with dedicated software loaded on the latest generation 12in colour touch screen controller with graphic operator interface. Thanks to the cutting/drilling area being totally enclosed in a cabin with electrically interlocked doors and clear vision panels, the operator is afforded a high level of safety, whilst still being able to clearly see the main working area. On request, the TAC can be supplied with a horizontal loading system and outfeed ejection and sorting system, configured to suit customers’ individual production requirements. 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

Business discovers the nuts and bolts of saving money on its heating bills A Redditch company that distributes nuts and bolts has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating bills. In2Components was founded in 1999 by Paul Caswell and Richard O’Hare to source and supply local businesses with fastener requirements. Having moved premises in August 2017 to a building with no heating, the business found itself relying on portable electric heaters to warm the factory when the weather turned really cold. Consequently, when director Paul Caswell saw the resulting electricity bill, he decided to find out more about a wood waste heater that he’d seen at a client premises, and was recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology (WWT). Paul says: “Investing in a wood waste heater seemed an obvious solution to help us dispose of some of the broken pallets and other burnable waste whilst providing us with free heating to keep our seven employees warm. Although we don’t generate much wood waste internally, we calculated that we’d still save money on our heating bills even if we ended up buying in some wood to burn!” Following a site survey and review, a WT5

heater was purchased and installed earlier this year by WWT’s experienced engineers. Paul continues: “We need not have worried about not having much of our own wood to burn,

as word soon got round about our new wood waste heater, and we’ve now got lots of other local businesses giving us their waste wood. It’s inevitable that some of the companies will end up purchasing their own wood waste heater though, as lots of them have already taken photos of it and asked us for contact details for WWT as it’s such a good investment, and is a great product.” Kurt Cockroft, MD at WWT says: “Although most of our customers generate their own wood waste to burn, it’s great to hear that our heaters are still appealing to other businesses in industries that don’t predominantly deal in wood manufacturing. Most of our sales come through referrals from other businesses, so we’re extremely thankful to In2Components and all our other clients who voluntarily recommend us to their contacts.” In addition, WWT is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

Hesse Lignal says it has revolutionised the paint industry with the launch of its Fantastic Fill primer, a primer that can save up to 50% in coats and processing times.

Hesse Lignal unveils Fantastic Fill, its impressive new primer Fantastic Fill is a polyurethane isolation primer with excellent body and remarkable surface smoothness, which in parallel optimises sanding characteristics and shortens the sanding process. It is a thixotropic application-friendly primer that facilitates application on edges and vertical components without negatively impacting levelling on horizontal surfaces even on MDF. Thomas Feldmann, product manager for Hesse-Lignal, asks: “Why spend a fortune on primers which then require laborious sanding?” This was the question posed at the beginning of the development process. The Fantastic Fill sets new standards for its ability to stay on vertical surfaces – its filling power and levelling effect significantly reduces the need for sanding. The rapid intermediate drying time of two hours is a big step forward in the marketplace. What this means for finishing is significantly reduced processing times, allowing for greater production but without compromising on quality. It provides the perfect base for the Hesse Colour systems.

The benefits of Fantastic Fill are one coat; 20% less sanding required; can be sanded after two hours; eight hour pot life; no thinning required; and an impressive filling power and levelling effect. Hesse strives to be at the forefront of wood coatings, and once more it claims to have surpassed standards for heat-, chemical- and scratch-resistance with Fantastic Fill. The lacquers are independently tested and certified, resulting in a system which meets the IMO

standard for seagoing vessels as well as Class B1 fire certification to DIN 4102. In respect of the well-being of sprayers and end users, Hesse’s Fantastic Fill formulation is free of wood preservatives, toxic heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers and formaldehyde. Following the successful launch of Fantastic Fill in Europe, Hesse Lignal has utilised its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute the product in the UK. The highlytrained staff at Redwood can answer queries on applications over the phone and on site if required. To book in for a demo of the Fantastic Fill primer contact Redwood Innovations, open Monday to Friday from 7.30am-4.30pm. 02392 233310 www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk
