Comment In this issue, we feature an interview with the recently appointed Homag UK MD, Simon Brooks. Alongside that, a slew of informative Installation articles with a number of suppliers new to these pages. We also take a look at the important issue of training, including Didac’s Woodwise Academy project and an update from Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance chairman, Gary Baker. Training will once again be on the agenda at the W Exhibition and Elements John Legg event soon. With three months until the industry’s top UK event for furniture Editorial director and joinery manufacturers, we’ve already got stuck into our plans for the show: exhibition stand design, tick; marketing, tick; hotels booked, tick, drinks and food, tick! We’re all set for another super event where the industry gets to discover the latest technology and materials from suppliers first hand. Most of the exhibitors will befamiliar names to many, but at this year’s event there’s a healthy number of first-timers I’ll be looking to meet. A marketing note for exhibitors at the show – once again we are producing the official show catalogue on behalf of the organiser and we are accepting bookings for that. In addition, we provide our readership with impressive previews in our August and September issues – they both are key pre-show marketing options. And lastly, don’t forget to follow up, perhaps with an HTML email to our readership? Do enjoy the issue, and also refer to our website (www.furnitureproduction.net) and our widely followedTwitter feeds – @FurnitureProdEd and @FurnitureProdAd – for further information and updates.

Masters Degree to target skills shortage finalised The content of an International Masters Degree, designed to tackle the furniture industry’s skills shortage, has been finalised. The IM-FUTURE project, which involves seven European partners, including the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM), has now developed its key learning pillars into manageable training modules and units. “IM-FUTURE is coming up with
ways for companies to ensure their workforce is in step with changes in technology, along with ways to make it financially worthwhile for companies, organisations and authorities to move along with these changes,” comments Florin Ioras, research professor of conservation sustainability and innovation, who is leading Buckinghamshire New University’s team.
Kite Packaging named Packaging Distributor of the Year Kite Packaging continues to make an impact on the packaging sector as it is awarded Packaging Distributor of the Year in the GHP Pharma Packaging & Manufacturing Awards 2018 for the second year running. “From the moment Kite Packaging was founded, we established it as an employee-owned business so that every single employee could share in the benefits that come from giving great customer service,” comments Kite’s Managing Partner, Gavin Ashe. “With our employee partners, our customer partners and our supplier partners there is the simple truth that what is in the long term good of one has to be in the long term good of the other. This has allowed us to invest in our business to build a truly great platform from which to service our customers, support our suppliers and grow our employees. “The pharmaceutical market has for many years been sheltered by high margins from the need to minimise packaging, but we think that economic pressures and far greater awareness of the environmental impact of wasteful packaging will encourage a more proactive approach, and we aim to be at the forefront of this as we look towards a bright and exciting future.”
SATRA test consumables sales The demand for SATRA reference materials and test consumables has grown over the past two years, with sales during the first four months of 2018 rising 30% than the same period 2016. This growth is seen as evidence that many test laboratories around the world acknowledge the importance of using high quality reference materials and consumable items that satisfy relevant test methods. ‘The importance of using the appropriate reference materials and
FP297 Pages.indd 6
consumables is often overlooked,” says SATRA chief executive, Austin Simmons. “SATRA has identified a global need for properly certified and traceable reference consumables, and has extended its range and customer base accordingly. It’s not enough to have a correctly calibrated test machine if the reference materials used for the testing are of poor quality or do not meet the specification called up in the test method, as these could mask a serious safety issue,” he adds.
Weinig creates new business unit
Weinig continues to press ahead with digitisation and, in a further step, has established a new business unit – Automation & Digital Business. “With this decision, we are strategically and organisationally aligning our company to the future, which will be characterised by a greater significance of project business and digitisation,” explains CEO, Wolfgang Pöschl. “Consequently, the new company
unit will be positioned in Weinig Concept GmbH & Co KG, which bundles Weinig’s engineering activities. Jochen Ganz, who is currently head of the product unit Service, was appointed managing director of the new business unit. As part of Concept, he will act as the second head alongside Dr Otto Leible, who will continue to head Engineering, his traditional field of responsibility.”
Morris Joinery wins in Shropshire Business Awards
A local joinery manufacturer has won a prized Shropshire Business Award for its commitment to growing skills through apprenticeships. Shrewsbury’s Morris Joinery was presented with the trophy by Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, at its annual awards ceremony at Telford International Centre. It was judged best in the county for its dedication to the employment of apprenticeship schemes. The business is known for its quality and craftsmanship in producing a variety of commercial and domestic work, from windows and doors to staircases and bespoke furniture. It passes on the skills needed by developing and nurturing the talents of young people who join as apprentices.
Steve Granda, joinery manager at Morris Joinery, says: “We are so pleased and proud to win this business award. It recognises our talented apprentices, who work hard, are keen to learn and make a positive contribution to our business and also recognises the commitment we have to apprenticeships. “It is important we attract young people to our workforce and teach them skills while maintaining the traditional and quality standard of work we produce.” The company has taken on six apprentices in the last seven years, with three currently gaining hands-on experience in its Bicton workshop. Each apprentice is assigned a dedicated mentor and given the support they need to succeed.

Two thirds say “Give us US-style window safety week!” Two out of every three businesses asked have backed a call by Angel Ventlock window restrictor manufacturer Mighton Products for the UK to launch its own US-style National Window Safety Week. “The figures speak for themselves,” says Mighton chairman, Mike Derham. “Not just in our poll but in the massive disparity between accident figures here and in the US, it is clear that more must be done to highlight this issue. “It seems incredible that we are spending millions designing windows that stop intruders getting in yet give barely a second thought to preventing children and vulnerable people from falling out. “The USA has had a Window Safety Week for many years and they have only one sixth the number of accidents per capita than we have here – there are actually fewer in total for a

population that is five times the size of ours*”. Mighton asked more than 3000 people one straightforward, direct question via email: Do you think we should have a national window safety week that highlights the risk and dangers associated with windows?’ The reply came loud and clear with more than two thirds of respondents saying yes. Mike Derham concludes: “Of course, it was only a relatively small survey sample but when it returned such a clear majority, that tells me we have found a strong mandate for action. *An estimated 3300 children aged five and under are treated in hospital emergency departments every year in the USA – which has over 320 million people – compared with over 4000 equivalent accidents in the UK, with a population of only 66 million.” www.mightonproducts.com

10 NEWS SCM celebrated an outstanding edition of Xylexpo with big figures for international attendance, innovative technologies and highly specialised training.
SCM celebrates a record-breaking Xylexpo The Italian Group, a long-standing, reliable partner for the entire woodworking industry, with a high-impact exhibition booth of over 3000m2, was one of the main attractions at the impressive event held in May. Among the many visitors, from all over the world, an upward trend in orders was recorded. Negotiations and contacts involved about 500 customers – half of them Italian, with a majority of Russian and French international customers – for an expected turnover of at least €30m. SCM confirmed once again its leading role in Italy and in Europe, not only for its range of industryspecific technological products, but also for its ability to innovate and educate, opening the way to future scenarios in woodworking. Innovation leaders Research and development has always been a key asset for SCM – absorbing 7% of its turnover each year. The three awards received at XIAXylexpo Innovation Awards 2018 – the highest number of awards won by any single exhibitor at this edition of the show – are evidence of this commitment. Three very different technologies were awarded prestigious prizes confirming SCM as a standard-setter for the industry, from joinery workshops to the largest industrial businesses. In the Tooling Machine category, the winner was the Minimax Me 35 combined edge rounder-trimmer unit – presented as a world première at Xylexpo. Indeed, the judges explained their thinking: “It combines edge rounding and trimming features in a single tool, allowing compact-sized machines with minimised footprint to be developed.” This suggests that the Minimax Me 35 edgebanding machine is ideal for smaller joinery businesses. For the Finishing section, the award went to SCM’s spindle carving unit for unique threedimensional finishing effects on panels. “With two routing units integrated into a sanding

machine,” commented the judges, “a wide variety of embossed elements can be achieved.” Maestro Smartech also made the podium: recognised for being among the most innovative solutions in the Maestro Digital Systems platform, it can supply technical assistance through remote connection and direct interaction between end users and expert technicians back at the manufacturer’s headquarters – also through smart glasses.” Increasingly customised, integrated high technology ‘Work simple. Work digital’ was the key motif from SCM at the exhibition, and was most certainly the theme of all the technological and digital innovations that were introduced. Of keen interest to visitors was the impressive Maestro Digital Systems platform, and in particular, the innovative IoT solution of SCM Maestro Connect, which, in response to Industry 4.0 requirements, makes the most of the potential of the Internet of Things concept to create a system for collecting and analysing data from SCM machines. In doing so, operators are able to increasingly monitor and optimise production processes, offering full control of production performance
by the customer and, on the other hand, a number of micro-services such as prompt, smart maintenance and optimised spare part management. Xylexpo visitors were also able to experience the potential of the new IoT equippable machining centres, such as Accord 42 FX, which raised considerable interest among door, window and stair manufacturers, and the Morbidelli M220, a new furniture milling and boring machining centre. The technologies with the best outlook in terms of business opportunities in general are the Morbidelli boring equipment, the Olimpic and Stefani edgebanding machines and Gabbiani cutting machines. The latest additions to the product range were equally as successful: these included the Celaschi p40 squaring machine ,

12 NEWS the Balestrini range for solid wood machining and the new, integrated SCM range for surface treatment, which includes, in addition to finishing, pressing and sanding. A steady, strong growing trend for the group SCM says that its success at Xylexpo is the crowning achievement of what it describes as an outstanding year – characterised by impressive figures. After an introduction by managing director Andrea Aureli, who emphasised the exceptionally positive trend shown by the SCM Group, with a stronger, more widespread presence in the woodworking industry across all five continents, the director of SCM, Luigi De Vito, presented an up-to-date SCM business overview – from the steadily increasing turnover figure, now close to €700m, to the 3600 people employed in Italian and international production facilities. De Vito also mentioned successful case histories such as, among others, the support given by SCM to the opening of the largest door manufacturing plant in Central Asia – the Binket Group in Uzbekistan – and the major investments made in recent months to support Italian-made products in over 40,000m2 production areas: from the new Superfici factory, in Monza created to strengthen and expand the surface treatment product range, to a new manufacturing area in Zogno, near Bergamo, created to further develop the production of special CMS machines, the go-to Group designs for the processing of other materials (composites, plastics, stone, glass and metals). The head of the Italian subsidiary, Luca Bergantini, also mentioned that Italy has now once again become an important, strategic market for SCM worldwide. “Europe today

initiatives both in Italy and abroad. In the last few years alone, SCM has supported the upgrading of 11 vocational training centres, four of which in the past two years. Among these, the new Federlegno Arredo school in Lentate sul Seveso attended by over 300 students, which starting from September, will host training centre courses becoming the most important training organisation for the industry nationwide. “We are very happy with this edition of Xylexpo: it was an opportunity for us to once again confirm our global leadership and, at the same time, to strengthen our partnerships in Italy and Europe,” comments Luigi De Vito, SCM division director. “With the three XIA-Xylexpo Innovation prizes that we were awarded, we proved that our manufacturing technology has not only set an acknowledged standard of excellence worldwide, but is also a primary innovation benchmark throughout the wood product supply chain. We are certain that our networking efforts at the show will further expand our market, which has continued to show double-digit growth figures also in the first few months of 2018. “This 50th anniversary edition of Xylexpo was important for SCM,” continues De Vito, “also because it was a chance for us to show hundreds of partners from all over the world around our new, exclusive headquarters of Superfici in Villasanta, Monza, with its Technology Centre designed to apply SCM business strategies to strengthen the whole surface treatment sector.” www.scm.com

14 INTERVIEW / SIMON BROOKS Homag is an internationally-recognised leader in advanced wood processing technology for SMEs and the large, high performance manufacturers – there can be few in the industry who remain unaware of this impressive business. The recently appointed managing director of its UK subsidiary, Simon Brooks, spoke with editor John Legg about the current state of affairs and his vision moving forwards.
Brooks’ pledge – to deliver an even better Homag experience There can be few furniture and joinery manufacturers who are unaware of Homag – the world’s leading wood processing machinery firm. The company’s expertise and know-how is typically in the vanguard of our industry and its consistent, professional approach to delivering innovation sets benchmarks across the wood processing sector. Based in Castle Donington, Homag UK is responsible for the sales and after-sales support for all machinery and software from the German parent company. Following on from a few robust

years commercially-speaking for the business, Homag UK’s recently-appointed managing director Simon Brooks comes to the hot seat with 18-years’ experience of the business which bodes well for the company’s performance and future outlook. “At Homag, we pride ourselves on being an honest, professional business with our customers’ interests at the forefront of our activities. Our sales team is not only extremely knowledgeable on our product range, but also has extensive manufacturing experience,”
explains Simon. “We are in a highly competitive market place and we are striving to maintain our position as the world leader – the research and development we put into the latest technology and innovations for the wood processing market are at the forefront of our thinking and bear testament to the company’s ambition. Homag’s passion for innovation, staying one step ahead of the game, such as with its new tapio platform for instance, is a strong element of the Homag DNA. Simon explains: “tapio is really significant, I believe it’s a game-changer in the woodworking industry. Of course, there has been a lot of talk of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things over the last few years and we are now demonstrating what this is and what it means for our customers. We launched the platform at Ligna last year – it’s now live and customers are already using the system, as are third party suppliers as well. “All manufacturers, suppliers as well as the customer base can use this central platform to share information, fault-find, trouble-shoot, prevent downtime and improve productivity. Homag is always looking to take the technology to the next stage and we are very excited by that. We’ve got a lot of interest in the UK on the concept and we’re already using the principles. All our machinery coming through the factory now is tapio-ready, free of charge, to embrace this and learn about what it really means.” Behind Homag’s impressive product offering its commitment to service and its welltrained staff, a point Simon values highly as a cornerstone of the UK business. “We pride ourselves on our relationship with customers, for example, the stance of our sales people is that we work with customers with an open mind, we give honest, professional advice and support for businesses looking to make an investment and seeking to understand in depth what the customer is looking to achieve. “For us it’s not about just selling a machine, it’s about providing a solution. It’s about building long term relationships – we enjoy great customer loyalty and we support customers with not just the machine, but the full solution on many levels. Our teams are dedicated to

15 delivering the very best service we can – our spare parts availability is excellent, many issues are resolved with a simple telephone conversation and we have a first-class team of field technicians out on the road as well covering the whole of the country. “Even though in my view we are doing the best job in this area, we are looking to strengthen the team and are actively recruiting on the after-sales side at the moment. As part of a continuous improvement agenda creating further efficiencies, we are determined to take our service ethos to the highest level possible in our industry.” This is quite a clarion call – the leading provider which already sets impressive standards is driving forward to better serve its customer’s in the field. This will help the company set new benchmarks for after-sales service and proactive customer relationship management. “Looking forward to the W Exhibition, we are launching new products at the show both in terms of hardware and software,” says Simon, “it promises to be an excellent event and we’re really excited about welcoming customers who don’t travel to the international events and offering them the opportunity to see our latest

innovations, to see where the technology is going, and demonstrating how it has become more affordable over the years.” Homag’s current product portfolio really has something for everybody. The company is rightly well-regarded for its capability at the top end of the market, but it has also worked tirelessly to develop products for SMEs – something it has achieved in a convincing fashion. Homag has for some time become a much more approachable company and potential customers need not be put off by the dominance of the brand. As Simon says: “Just because we are the largest manufacturer in the world, it doesn’t mean that we are only interested in the bigger players. We actively encourage relationships with smaller businesses. Alongside our smart new branding first seen at HolzHandwerk earlier this year, our stand at the W Exhibition will present a balance between smaller and larger business, plus of course we will formally
introducing the tapio concept to our UK customers.” In general terms, the key agenda for any managing director assuming the post of MD in an already-successful business is to continue to build on that success. Simon reiterates his agenda: “We are dedicated to delivering exceptional experiences for our customers and a positive long-term relationship. To achieve this, we scrutinise our internal processes, on a daily basis, examining the way we interact with our customers. “The whole Homag business is focused on continuous improvement, improving relationships and making it easier to work with Homag. We are strengthening the team in the UK because we are determined to be even more customer-friendly and improve on all aspects to deliver what we call the Homag experience.” 01332 856500 homag.com

16 INSTALLATION Aquapac Furniture is currently going through a major expansion programme and has partnered with Homag for woodworking machinery and software.
Homag’s woodCAD|CAM software revolutionises Aquapac Furniture Aquapac Furniture, founded in 1996, is one of the biggest manufacturers of flat pack aquarium cabinets and vivariums in the UK. In addition, it produces other wood-based products such as POS display stands and offers a simple cut and edge panel service for local tradesmen. The company, led by managing director, Stephen Connachan, is currently going through a major expansion programme and has partnered with Homag for woodworking machinery and software. Aquapac has recently moved from four leased units in Maryhill in Glasgow (which amounted to 22,000ft2) to a new single 50,000ft2 facility in Cumbernauld that the company has bought outright. This has enabled it to expand and offer products to a new marketplace, bespoke kitchens. Stephen Connachan takes up the story: “The move was the first stage in a long-term plan to grow the business. We first invested in Homag equipment in 2007
and recently we’ve bought the woodCAD|CAM software and are using it with several Homag machines including the BHX 500. “The machines we had prior to Homag coming on board just weren’t up to the demands our increased business was putting on them, they simply couldn’t keep up. We were experiencing more down time than anything else and that’s why we decided to move to Homag who offer the bigger, more powerful and reliable industrial machines. These models have had a significant impact on our business and now enable us to process millions of panels a year.” Modernising and automating our processes “Before we moved into our new facility the system to cost and quote jobs for customers was about a ten step process. This often started with the customers giving us a verbal brief or a ‘back of a fag packet’ sketch of what they wanted. “From this rough sketch we would
Homag’s woodCAD|CAM software - detailed planning with CAD model drawings
FP297 Pages.indd 16
have to draw up plans and turn them into a CAD model. If they liked the model we would then have to cost it out and, if the price was right, we would need to generate technical drawings for each of the panels before having to physically go down and programme the machines for each panel. As you can imagine, this involved a lot of human intervention resulting in not only a high work load, but also a great deal of time. “Now, the software allows us to quickly create the CAD model concept to present to the customer; then, once the customer is happy with it, the software automatically programmes our machines for us. It performs the cutting list, and also allows us to print off barcode labels for each panel with information such as batch numbers. This enables us to process smaller batches through our factory. “The main reason for us buying the BHX 500 and the software was to allow us to quote on more contract furniture work, but we also wanted to enter the batch size 1
market for bespoke kitchens. “Previously our business model was large batch production; we were making anywhere from 50 to 500 cabinets of the same type. Today we can produce maybe 3040 bespoke kitchens a week which was unthinkable before. “With the software we’re able to put a barcode label on every panel we produce which enables us to follow each panel through the manufacturing process before collating them into kitchen carcasses further down the line. In the new facility we’ve set up three assembly stations where everything is flat packed and ready to assemble.” Deciding on the best solution “Selecting the right partner for the software was a big, big decision for us, so we were mindful to carry out thorough due diligence before making the investment. “We looked into most of the parametric based systems in the

is more efficient; it enables us to do more quotations whilst at the same time changing the aesthetics of our quotes, which not only look better, but they are also more informative for our customers. “Of course, there’s a lot to learn with such a sophisticated piece of software, but as we understand it more we’re finding little nuggets that empower our processes. We’ve been able to develop new markets for our business since we invested in the software. Previously we weren’t able to economically produce bespoke kitchens, now we’re doing 30 or 40 kitchens a week thanks to woodCAD|CAM.” market place and profiled a variety of companies’ software to find out which would work best for our needs. After some serious soul searching, the solution that stood out was woodCAD|CAM. Coming from Homag we knew it would be good (after all, we’d had years of experience with them to back up our belief), and the fact that 99 per cent of our machinery is also Homag, it made sense for us to invest in its bespoke software solution. “Before making the final decision we visited Homag UK and the Homag Treff in Germany to see the software in action. Despite the fact that it was perhaps a larger investment than some other solutions, we bought the full package (bar one module) to give us the maximum benefits and flexibility for our production. “The Homag woodCAD|CAM has enabled us to go from a ten step process down to a CAD model drawing which takes us minutes
FP297 Pages.indd 17
compared with hours previously. It then automatically programmes the machines, does all the barcode labelling, helps schedule the cutting lists and has reduced our quoting from days to hours. “Looking ahead, our plan is to add more and more automation in the plant and this software is the enabler for us automating our production line. Over the next three years we’re looking to spend a considerable sum with Homag on more new machinery to help us achieve this goal. “Naturally, we were tempted by cheaper options from their competition; however, we felt that keeping loyalty with the Homag brand would pay dividends in the long run. We were very confident that Homag would look after us better than if we bought the machinery from one company and the software from another. That would have given us a real headache trying to add more machines and tie it all together to
make it work successfully. So the long-term strategy of sticking with Homag made sense to us.” A reliable system delivering quality products “With Homag you have certainty in the quality of the panels you produce. Previously, with the level of human intervention, there were always high risks of mistakes. Once you’d completed all your technical sheets, you’d have to go and programme the machines and if an operator enters in a measurement of 1225 instead of 1125, the programme wouldn’t work. “With the woodCAD|CAM, you’re creating an article (a cabinet) and it automatically takes care of all the details, lining up all the holes etcetera, so the software’s actually doing all the programming of the machines for you. The result means we get the production right, first time, every time, and that is so beneficial to our business. “As a consequence, the company
A solid recommendation “Homag machinery is, in our opinion, the best in the market place; it provides the very best quality results. The German parent company invest heavily in technology and when you buy Homag technology you know it is going to be at the forefront of the market for the next five or six year at least. With competitors’ technologies they seem to be maybe two or three years behind. “The other massive benefit with Homag is the machines’ reliability; they operate consistently with very little downtime compared to other brands we’ve had in the past. They really are almost bullet-proof,” concludes Stephen Connachan. For a demonstration or more information about Homag software and machinery, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. 20 INSTALLATION Galaxy Interiors is a young business focussed on kitchen, bedroom and office furniture manufacturing. Using a traditional multi-borer to drill cut and edged panels was becoming problematic – the solution came in the form of an AES Sirius 950M point to point boring machine from AES distributor J & C O’Meara.
Galaxy Interiors’ drilling pains solved with Sirius solution
Ian Makinson and son Alex with their AES Sirius 950M CNC drilling and milling machine
“Our business began through necessity,” explains Ian Makinson, managing director of Leylandbased Galaxy Interiors, “my wife and I were looking to furnish our own home. We found affordable furniture but the quality was poor and with limited choice of colours and styles – whereas the furniture we liked was far too expensive. So I set out to do better myself!” Ian established the business, initially in his garage, then to a

small unit and now to a 3000ft2 premises with room to grow. With 23 years served as a bricklayer, Ian used his network from the building trade and is now fast developing a reputation for good quality replacement doors and full kitchens. Currently a lot of his contacts are using Galaxy Interiors as a local, reliable, quality-oriented designer and manufacturer. In the 18 months since he started, Ian naturally had to evolve the
operation.“In terms of equipment, I have an Altendorf panel saw, a Robland edgebander, and my latest machine, an AES Sirius 950M CNC drilling and milling machine.” Supplied and installed by Burscough-based J & C O’Meara, the AES Sirius 950M point to point boring machine is a high quality machine designed for flexible drilling and routing applications. It provides a cost-effective solution for kitchen and bedroom furniture
manufacturers who can typically cut and edge panels efficiently but then bottlenecks develop because of having to use traditional boring machines or manually marking out, drilling and screwing – slowing the process down and increasing the potential for errors and quality issues. “Before I bought the Sirius, I didn’t realise Carl (O’Meara) was only down the road in Burscough – they’re only 12 miles away. In

21 retrospect, I think I paid over the odds for a machine or two in the early days, and the after-sales on those has been quite poor. Whereas with the Sirius working with Carl and the guys at J & C O’Meara has been really superb, first class!” Ian says that the multiborer he used before getting the Sirius was slow and quite a challenge: “There were so many settings to do and you had to remembered them for the interlocking – it was quite mind-blowing at times. I really needed to upgrade this part of my business as it had become a chore. By comparison the Sirius is so easy to use – it has speeded up our work dramatically and has made the product much better too because it’s so precise,” he explained. The Sirius machine has a heavy

The machine has a large industrial based 17in colour windows based PC with both USB and remote file transfer. With the addition of the optional router head, a range of tasks can be easily resolved such as grooving for solid backs on carcasses, routing out for cable management, pipes or skirting and shaping for corner units. Ian sees his Sirius investment
as extremely worthwhile: “We really needed to change how we were getting this part of the job done,” he says, “we had to achieve a better drilling option than what we were doing before. With the brilliant Sirius it’s done in a fraction of the time and the quality is spot on and it’s easily repeatable. I would definitely recommend one!” 01704 893109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery. co.uk

Even large panels are loaded and move through the machine with ease thanks to the air flotation tables and are firmly held for positioning by the pneumatic gripper. The machine has a generous 950mm working width and is equipped with 10 vertical drills, which drill from below to ensure the working surface and all holes are kept dust free whilst also having the benefit of increased accuracy as the drilling depth will always be correct despite any tolerances in the thickness of the workpiece. The machine is also equipped with horizontal drilling to all four sides and a grooving saw for the X axis.

24 INSTALLATION How Ultima Furniture, a leader in kitchen manufacturing, has grown to a fully automated factory with Modesta.
From garage to automated factory with Modesta Ultima Furniture started over 30 years ago in the garage of CEO Alf Ellis, who decided to build his own kitchen. Last year, the company’s DIY kitchens beat IKEA in the quality test of British consumer magazine Which. Since its acquisition of a new building in 2010, Ultima Furniture has been keeping its factories clean with Modesta filters. Ultima Furniture designs and crafts complete kitchens, manufacturing everything in-house and producing on average 3000 cabinets a week in one of its plants. Next to its brand Ultima Furniture, Ultima Furniture owns DIY-kitchens. com and Innova Kitchens. Ultima’s products are made to order and supplied with all parts fitted to prevent visible fixings and holes. This way, its customers can design the kitchen they want exactly. Furthermore, Ultima’s stateof-the-art automated machinery ensures high efficiency rates and affordable prices.
FP297 Pages.indd 24
Although the end product is produced in Britain, the machinery and materials come from all over Europe. Since the start of its collaboration with Modesta in 2010, all dust extraction in Ultima’s production plants is done with the Dutch filter systems. “Comparable machines can be found in the UK, but none of them offer the same quality as Modesta”, says Ultima’s CEO, Alf Ellis. “That’s why we decided to buy our filter systems on the other side of the North Sea. Nowadays, we don’t even ask for quotes from competitors because there’s no competition for Modesta.” DIY kitchens In 1983, Alf and his wife Clare bought a new home but struggled to find a good, affordable kitchen that they liked. “I decided to build my own kitchen in the garage – not knowing this would be the first ever Ultima product,” says Alf. After building a kitchen for a

friend of his sister’s and using the money to buy more equipment, he decided to open their first business premises. Ultima began to attract multiple trade customers and after several big investments and upgrades to bigger plants, the company is now operating from several units, capable of producing more than 9500 cabinets a week. Ultima’s automated cabinet assembly line is one of the most advanced in the UK, automatically inserting hinge plates, worktop brackets, different types of drawer runners and leg bosses. Starting out as a family business, Alf still works together with his wife, son, and daughter. Nowadays, he prefers to be involved in business development and logistics. His children focus mainly on the online presence of Ultima and the use of new technologies to manufacture their products. Next to the Ellis family, Ultima has around 310 employees.
02/07/2018 15:10

Co-operation with Modesta When Ultima Furniture was looking to move its kitchen door, accessory and painting production to a new unit in 2010, it acquired the first Modesta filter. “The technology of their machines is fantastic,” says Alf. “They’re energy saving and have a quick installation and repair service.” The modular set-up of the filter systems ensures energy efficiency. Thanks to the use of several smaller motors as opposed to one big one, the customer can arrange the desired output without performing out of the motor’s ideal range. Should a defect of one of the
FP297 Pages.indd 25
fans occur, the rest of the fans can keep running and production is not interrupted. If this happens, a self-managing team of mechanics makes sure the system is fully operative again without any downtime for the production. With the first filter (installed in 2010) still up and running with barely any interruptions, Modesta delivered a brand new filter system to one of Ultima’s renovated factories last year. It was the first time it didn’t just supply the machine, but also took care of the pipes and assembly. Since the summer of 2010, Modesta has carried out five filter projects at Ultima production locations in South Kirby and Sherburn. “In the past 10 years, Ultima grew a lot,” comments Wyboud from Modesta. “I’m happy to say that we can still offer them the continuity they need. We’re a good match.” www.modestafilters.com

“What’s the point of throwing wood away and then paying for heating?” The owner of a furniture manufacturing company is delighted with his purchase of a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology, as it delivers everything promised regarding its provision of free heating and reduction in waste disposal costs. Barn 6 Furniture is a high-end bespoke furniture manufacturer that has been trading for around
22 years. No stranger to biomass technology, the company already owned two wood waste heaters. However, when Richard Bullock, MD of Barn 6 visited another business and saw a heater from Wood Waste Technology, he decided that when the business moved to its new 5300m2 workshop in Letchworth he was going to invest in a new one… Richard explains “Having seen the heater from Wood Waste
Technology whilst visiting another business, I couldn’t believe the difference between the wood waste heaters that we’d got from one manufacturer, and the ones produced by Wood Waste Technology. “So, I decided it was time to replace and upgrade. The whole investment in biomass technology just makes sense – what’s the point of throwing wood away then
paying for heating!” Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT10 wood waste heater into the furniture workshop at the end of last year. Richard says: “We’re very impressed with the new wood waste heater – it definitely seems to burn better than our previous ones. It does exactly what Wood Waste Technology promised it would do. We especially like how cleanly the new heater burns, as that was one of our worries being situated in such a populated area.” Kurt Cockroft, managing director at Wood Waste Technology says: “Businesses with a significant amount of wood waste can get payback on their investment in a wood waste heater in as little as 12 months because of the savings that can be made by reducing heating and skip hire bills.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

Although the current business would be unrecognisable to Charlie, its roots as a family concern are still at the heart of the company and, over the years, several generations from a number of families have been employed by the South Yorkshire-based firm.

C W Fields & Son is an industryleading manufacturer, supplying high-performance security and fire doors, acoustic and hygiene doors, wall panelling, and bespoke joinery. Under the patronage of chairman Toni Dalla-Riva, the business is now forging ahead with a senior management line-up that embraces a new generation of family ownership; with daughter Francesca and son Marc Dalla-Riva, son-in-law and commercial director John Cowx, and Nigel Fields, who started as an apprentice joiner nearly 40 years ago.
To satisfy growing demand for the company’s products, a new 12,000ft2 extension to the current building has significantly increased manufacturing space – facilitating a major reorganisation of the factory layout to deliver a more efficient and streamlined production path, as well as accommodating the installation of a new five-axis CNC machine; just the latest addition to C W Fields’ existing armoury of hi-tech machinery. To enable the relocation of machinery it was obviously necessary to re-structure the dust extraction system, and Messrs Dalla-Riva and Cowx had discussions with Ray Townley, area sales manager for Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS), regarding design and installation of a complete new ductwork system and, with the expected increase in demand being placed on the dust extraction system, Toni and John had also anticipated the need to replace the existing fan sets and filter unit. Having completed a full survey of the site, Ray Townley prepared proposals for DCS to install a complete new FastClip ductwork system throughout the factory. However, Ray was convinced that DCS could circumvent the need, and the cost, of replacing the existing fans and filter and, in addition, significantly reduce the extraction system’s power consumption. As Ray Townley explains: “I
02/07/2018 15:10
31 discussed the project with Ian Rayner, sales manager at Ecogate Ltd, and we both agreed that the planned reorganisation presented C W Fields with the ideal opportunity to benefit from the implementation of Ecogate extraction-on-demand technology.” After further discussions with Fields, Ian Rayner undertook a full evaluation of the extraction requirements; gathering detailed data on usage, running times, and volume requirements of all the production machinery. “ By taking account of all machine downtimes, such as loading and unloading, tool changeovers, as well as operator break times, and the infrequent running of some more specialist machines”, says Ian Rayner, “DCS were able to present a proposal to Fields that showed a significant reduction in total extraction volume could be achieved if an Ecogate system was installed.” In fact, the data collected at Fields revealed that the expected average reduction in extraction volume requirement, across the complete extraction system, would be around 20% with Ecogate installed, which meant the existing extraction fans and filter unit could continue to operate well within their capacities. The existing system is powered by three independent fan sets rated at 30kW, 37kW and 45kW. With all three fans in operation and running at 90% of full load – all day every day – the total power consumption would be over 100kW per hour; equating to around 225,000kWh per year. With Ecogate installed, it was calculated that power consumption could be reduced by around 100,000kWh per year – yielding a saving of over 40% on electricity bills, and a return on investment in under four years. The Ecogate system installed at Fields comprises: 20 Ecogate dampers, which automatically open as an individual machine starts to process material and require dust extraction; three greenBOX 12 controllers, which monitor machine usage; and three PowerMASTER variable speed drive units which, as instructed by the greenBOX controller, independently adjust the speed of each of the main fan sets, in real time, to exactly match the continually fluctuating extraction requirements as machines come on- or off-line. There are currently 16 machines
FP297 Pages.indd 31
requiring dust extraction but, with each greenBOX 12 capable of controlling up to 12 machines, and the flexibility of FastClip ductwork, there is still plenty of room for expansion at C W Fields. “We were very impressed with DCS throughout the whole process,” comments John Cowx. “The company provides a truly professional service and, from the
outset, it was clear that both Ray and Ian were keen to ensure that Toni and I were provided with all the relevant information we needed to make an informed decision on this key capital purchase.” As well as the significant cost savings predicted for C W Fields’ electricity bills, the expected reduction in power usage equates to a staggering reduction in annual CO2 emissions of over
57 tonnes, and the installation also fulfils the necessary prerequisites for a Green Business Fund grant application. DCS is a fully accredited supplier with the Carbon Trust, and is able to assist with a grant application and provide all the necessary documentation required to support an application. 0800 040 7116 www.DCSlimited.co.uk

32 INSTALLATION Kitchen company Baker and Baker says investing in Cabinet Vision has slashed the working time needed to produce its cut lists by around 20 weeks a year.
Cabinet Vision slashes cutting list working time by 20 weeks a year “It wasn’t until we sat down and looked at how the time added up, that we realised just how much we were saving,” says Baker and Baker designer Sam Thornley. Before Cabinet Vision, the Essex-based company designed everything in a 2D CAD package, with elevations being produced once they had won the contract. “The workshop manager would use those drawings to create the cut lists. It’d take him at least three days a week to work out every component size and put it into an Excel document, which was prone to error,” says Sam. However, saving that incredible amount of time on cut lists was an added bonus. Their investment in Cabinet Vision was actually prompted by a need to speed up their initial drawings. “Using Cabinet Vision means we can also create the elevations and rendering now in the same amount of time,”

continues Sam. And how it produce its renderings is set to change, thanks to a major update in Cabinet Vision Version 11, which it has recently installed. The latest release of the software contains a powerful new photo rendering engine geared specifically towards the design market. It provides a massive enhancement on the rendering capabilities in previous versions, and now gives Sam almost photo-like images which can be used as a sales tool. He says good renders are a vital part of converting a quote into a job. “Some customers can’t visualise the finished kitchen from
FP297 Pages.indd 33
a 2D plan drawing. It’s so important to show something that’s visually impressive. I’d say a render wins us around 20% more work.” Previously, they were producing renders in a different computer program, and is now undertaking full training on how to use Cabinet Vision’s new high-end photo rendering capabilities. “It means we can manage every step of the design process without having to transfer data between systems,” says Sam. The combination of creating cut lists in Cabinet Vision along with its design capabilities means the software is an integral part of his working day. “It’s as important a
tool as we’ve got anywhere in the business ... if not more so,” he says. Producing around 15 large kitchens a year, along with two or three smaller ones, mostly delivered within a 15 mile radius of its showroom which is in neighbouring Suffolk, means that it prefers to manufacture everything in the traditional way, rather than use CNC machines. The process begins when Graham Baker, who jointly owns the company with his wife Marie, takes laser measurements of the customer’s room, plotting the points. Sam then draws the room, and builds the kitchen design,
producing renders and quotes. “I work through everything, ensuring we have the correct materials, and that the corner mechanisms and doors will fit and work. As long as I put everything in the right place, Cabinet Vision does the rest,” he says. When the company was established around 20 years ago it predominantly focused on joinery, mainly manufacturing windows and doors, but progressed into high end kitchens, along with some bedroom, home office, study and library work, and now operates with 12 employees. “Every component we make goes through Cabinet Vision. The reason we invested in it was to speed up the design process, and to get the cutting lists directly out of the drawings instead of having the workshop manager hand writing them for two or three days a week. “I design everything in Cabinet Vision, and once the cut lists have been produced, I’ll print a door cutting list, panel stock cutting list and drawer cutting list along with the technical drawings and a plan drawing, and take it to the wood machinist on the shop floor.” Using an Altendorf F45 panel saw and spindle moulder, all the cabinetry is machined and spindled to the correct sizes ready for assembly. He says its biggest challenge is that nothing is standard; everything is bespoke. Up to around 1000 individual components go into its average kitchen. All carcass material is oak veneered MDF moisture-resistant board, and solid lippings generally comprise tulip wood, oak or maple. “Many kitchen companies have a drag and drop catalogue of cupboards they use, but with us everything is made to measure. So the fact that Cabinet Vision lets us select a cupboard and readily edit its height, depth and width, is so important. There’s nothing it can’t do in terms of creating our bespoke cabinet quickly and accurately every time,” says Sam. He concludes: “In the past, we had to produce the elevations and cut lists after the customer gave us the order. Now, with Cabinet Vision, the cut lists are produced with the original drawings, so we’ve already got them, and can start work as soon as we win the contract.” www.cabinetvision.com www.bakerandbaker.co.uk

34 INSTALLATION Founded in 1978, Daval Furniture is an innovator in the creation of luxury fitted furniture for homes. Located in the picturesque landscape of Yorkshire, Daval is a family owned business with British furniture design and manufacture at its heart.
Homag doubles production capacity for Daval Furniture Daval Furniture has enjoyed considerable success, however future growth was being threatened by the changing cost base for the industry as Daval’s managing director, Simon Bodsworth, explains. “Over the last few years we have seen costs such as labour, raw materials, transport and energy rise dramatically,” he says. “These costs are mainly out of our control and have become disproportionate within our business model. Consequently, we have had to look at changing our approach to adapt to these significant cost rises.” Thirty per cent rise in sales “At the same time, rapid growth in our sales – 30% in the last 12 months alone – put pressure on our production capacity. Our process of cellular-based manufacturing on CNCs just didn’t have the capacity to grow at the necessary pace.
“We were handling raw materials with a standard forklift truck, placing full size panels onto the bed of a CNC. When you multiply this activity by the number of machines we have, it’s clear to see that this process is incredibly time consuming and error prone. “The technology from a cut, edge, drill scenario has changed significantly. You can now produce made-to-order products on a much more volume orientated scale and this led us to the decision to invest in machinery and software that would help us achieve our future plans.” Finding the right partner “We’ve been a fan of Homag machinery for over 20 years. With such a major investment, however, we decided it was vitally important to carry out a thorough evaluation to ensure we partnered with the company that was right for the future of our business. “So in 2016 we began the process
Homag TLF 411 - total stock control, storage and retrieval system
FP297 Pages.indd 34
of seeing what equipment was out in the market. Our first port of call was Ligna where we were able to get a good overview of the market. Following this, we visited a number of machine manufacturers who offer similar solutions and talked with independent consultants to get their view on how the industry is changing. “Our research focused us on investing in a number of solutions for made-to-order, made-tomeasure furniture on a volume scale. The first stage was a storage and retrieval system linked to a beam saw. This was to be followed by an edge banding line due in May this year and a drilling cell in September. The completed solution will give us a fully functioning line.” Homag wins the business “Selecting Homag as our partner of choice was driven predominantly by the excellent levels of service, both pre and post sale, which they have always provided. And, of
course, with Homag, you know you are getting the very best machines money can buy; they are reliable and do exactly what it says on the tin. “Determining the specification of all the machinery was critically important and Homag played a major role in making sure we invested in the right models to achieve our goals. We had numerous meetings with them over a period of time, but they were always focused on understanding what we wanted to achieve, not what they wanted to sell, which was very refreshing and reassuring. “This approach meant we ended up with an optimum line, rather than a collection of individual machines. Much credit must go to Homag’s John Shepherd and David Gildea for their guidance, knowledge and help in achieving this. And, by purchasing all the machines from the one supplier, we knew we’d have a one-stop solution.” Understanding the production process “Perhaps the best accolade you can give Homag is that they have always gone out of their way to make sure they have the best understanding of our production process. This is absolutely vital from our perspective. “It means they know the knock-on consequences of what they are telling you about which means they can give you the best advice either way. “The first stage of our investment is a Homag TLF 411 storage and retrieval system linked to a Homag HPP 300 beam saw. This forms the foundation of our end-to-end solution. The automatic board storage and retrieval system gives us total control of our stock of raw

materials and eliminates damage caused by manual handling. “On delivery, full size boards are loaded directly into the system and when required are automatically supplied to the relevant saw for sizing. Any unused part-panels are put back into storage for use at a later date. “The overhead PC system has total control of our stocks, it can reorganise our materials according to demand and it automatically notifies us when stocks need reordering. All of the guess work has gone. “The quality of cut and the speed of the new HPP 300 saw are fantastic and give us a solid base to produce first class finished
products. Using this new Homag cell, our board conversion area has become much more efficient and organised. “With the new system we will double our production capacity which, as you can imagine, is incredibly significant. The connected technology, the barcoding solutions that run behind it and our Option-i software that interlinks with it, mean we can offer more flexibility to our customers. “We have better traceability of the production system and so can provide more communication back to our customers and internally. We naturally have better quality because the latest machines consistently produce better
products. They are also more functional with different finishing stations which allow a higher quality ‘box ready’ product. “The connectivity back to our Option-i software is really key. It gives us this end to end production approach which we’ve been working on for three years now.” Help with financing “With such a major investment we were looking for guidance on the financing side and Homag were more than willing to help. They introduced us to Homag Finance who were able to put together a very attractive deal for us. “Looking ahead, we would expect that on average, the return on our
£1.1m investment will take five to six years. “The great thing with Homag is that they never over promise and under deliver. Our new business model will double our capacity, significantly reduce waste and the automation it allows will give us the end-to-end solution that will deliver better, more cost effective products for our customers,” concludes Simon Bodsworth. 36 INSTALLATION Doig Furniture is a manufacturer of luxury bespoke furniture and cabinetry for the high-end residential market. The team of experienced cabinet makers produce beautifully crafted furniture using both traditional hand skills and modern CAD techniques from the Oxfordshire workshops.
Kündig’s quality delivers significant time saving for Doig Furniture Backed by a support team of designers and project managers, Doig Furniture works collaboratively with award-winning architects and interior designers on large scale projects, as well as working directly with private clients on smaller individual commissions. Doig Furniture can provide everything from a single piece of furniture, a fitted room scheme or all the furniture elements required in large, new build and renovation projects, all with the same attention to detail and exceptional craftsmanship. Late in 2017, Doig Furniture purchased a Kündig Uniq S edge sander from Kündig agents, Markfield Woodworking Machinery (MWM) Ltd. Doig Furniture managing director, Duncan Doig, explains: “Kündig as a brand is the go-to for high end sanding equipment. Everybody is using the sander and everyone is pleased with it.” The Kündig Uniq S has proved a significant time saver. “It has enabled us to carry out processes we were previously doing by hand in a much quicker time frame,” says Duncan. “It gives a consistent finish on every panel and is a much more efficient way of working. The
FP297 Pages.indd 36
machine is versatile, is double sided and tilts. We have some optional extras, and will probably add to them down the line.” Among the options selected Duncan identifies the power feed as something which drew him towards Kündig: “The machine was designed to do the process we were looking to do.” He may also add the bobbin sander attachment in the future, the advantage of which is it allows work on curves to be carried out. “We typically use the sander to edge sand boards or components in general. The main reason we bought the machine was the edge sanding capabilities. Equally, the reverse of the machine is an open belt sander, so we use that for shaping as well. The ability to shape is an added bonus, which you would expect from that kind of quality machine,” said Duncan. When the need for the edge sander arose, it was natural for Duncan to go to MWM. “We have used MWM previously, having bought three or four machines from them, which we are very pleased with. Most of the key machines we buy are the best we can source, and typically they come from Germany or Austria. Kündig is another one of the brands MWM supply. “We typically deal with Gavin.
We have been to his showroom and met him at exhibitions. All the service we have received has been excellent, and we have a good long standing relationship with MWM. “I have also seen Kündig sanders in other workshops and my understanding is that they are one of the leading brands in the industry. When you see cheaper sanders, the build quality of Kündig really stands out.” Gavin comments: “We are proud to be Kündig agents, which allows us to offer premium products to customers like Doig Furniture who are looking for the best in the market.” The Kündig Uniq-S handles throughfeed sanding of small or large workpieces thanks to the integrated feed system, and can operate manually or with automatic feeding. With a table size of 1180 mm x 325 mm, the sander comes with two guide-pulleys for long
workpieces. Pressure rollers hold the workpieces against the feed belt. The solid frame construction features heavy cast iron tables. The belt width is 150-200mm, and the belt length is 2000mm. The working level is approximately 830mm on the sanding side and 900mm on the side for veneer sanding. The net weight is 490kg and the floor space required is 1150mm x 800mm. When asked if he would recommend the sander and the service he has received, Duncan replied: “Yes, that’s easy. On the whole it is a great machine, and the build quality is fantastic. It does exactly what we want it to do. Overall we are really pleased with the machine and the purchase. And when the time comes to update our current wide belt sander, we will definitely be looking for a Kündig as well.” 0845 833 0565 www.kundig.co.uk

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

40 INSTALLATION After the service that AMS gave to Chris Sandercock two years ago, the company has put its trust in AMS once again to replace its old planer moulder.
Chris Sandercock puts its trust in AMS again Leicestershire-based Chris Sandercock was formed in 1991, producing windows, doors, stairs and furniture, as well as joinery mouldings in solid timber. The business was set up by husband and wife team Chris and Colette Sandercock, after studying at Leicester College. Their first contact with AMS was in 2016, when they bought a fully Rebuilt Resaw. AMS always has a range of used machines in stock at Skeffington, Leicestershire. More recently it has acquired a Wadkin Bursgreen M523EL five head planer moulder. “We chose AMS to buy our new machine because when we visited their showroom we could see that their engineers were experts and they really know how to fully operate the machine,” Chris and Colette comment. “By having a demonstration on the machine at AMS we could ask about how to use it, what it could do, and what capability it has, and we got a professional answer from the AMS team.” AMS has a large range of planer moulders available for many different types of workshop. “The installation process was
AMS sales manager Brett discussing Sandercock Joinery’s new planer moulder
smooth and professional and the training given by the AMS engineer was first class,” says Chris. Chris Sandercock uses the Wadkin Bursgreen M523EL– five head moulder to produce windows, doors and pretty much any job that requires accurate planing and moulding. Without it, Chris and Colette couldn’t complete the sequence of operations required for high class
joinery production. AMS is a service company that sells machines, something that Colette can attest to. “Their repair service is fantastic,” she says. “We have never had any problem with their engineers; they come back to us very quickly and resolve any problem. Furthermore, we have resolved issues over the phone.” “It has been a great pleasure to help Sandercock Joinery with their
latest purchase from us,” affirms AMS sales manager, Brett. “AMS specialises in the supply of industrial woodworking machinery, service, tooling and spare parts. “If you are looking for a woodworking machinery service company or you are looking for new woodworking machines, AMS is the best choice!” 08448 449949 www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

45 The Woodwise Academy in Bristol is making a significant contribution to closing the skills gap in the industry by offering youngsters the opportunity to develop hand skills in woodworking and furniture. In 2008 the team at Didac, which is most widely known for its work-based training programmes delivered throughout the UK, decided to take the next step in the development of its furniture and woodworking development business model, by opening a skills academy in Bristol. Elaine Stanley, operations manager at Didac comments: “It took two years to get the project off the ground, but in 2010 Didac opened the Woodwise Academy, located three miles to the east of Bristol city centre on the banks of the river Avon, making it a comfortable place in which to learn.” She went on to say: “Throughout our 21 years in business, Didac has always worked on a roll-on-roll-off basis, which means learners can start at any time of the year, rather than being limited to the academic year. This approach is helping us to recruit learners because we can start their training programme at a time to meet their personal needs.” Elaine works alongside Shane Stenning, workshop manager and lead instructor, ably supported by two further instructors and a workshop technician. But one of Didac’s strengths is its ability to call on any one of its work-based trainers to deliver specialist skills training – in CNC machining, for example. Elaine continues: “We currently have six groups working in the academy. The study programme for 16-18 year olds, a bench joinery and shop fitting group of apprentices, who

– closing the skills gap take day release from their employment. “This programme is supported by CITB, which approached Didac in 2015 to assure training capacity in the Bristol area. “It was in 2011 that we started our study programme for 16-18 year olds as Didac is passionate about igniting interest in school students and working with the local community in Bristol. “The course offers an alternative to sixth form or college and works with smaller groups of students interested in this industry. We also work with local hospital schools supporting those students that have the skill set but not always the confidence to approach further education easily. “Thus far, this has been a huge success and in 2017 we were able to double numbers due to the high interest and that resulted in several students being placed with local companies on apprenticeships and on progression programmes with us. “We also introduced a schools programme to work with local secondary schools and those students that are homeschooled, to assist them in returning to peer environments.” Not only is Didac helping youngsters develop practical skills, which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives, it is supporting the schools in the delivery of their wider curriculum because students often re-engage. Elaine says: “It’s been a wonderful partnership between us and the schools, which will continue to benefit many youngsters who would otherwise miss out on the opportunity.” www.didac.co.uk

46 TRAINING Furniture & Joinery Production talks to Gary Baker, chairman of the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA), about the group’s new partnership with the Apprentice Management Group.
You’re hired A lot has been happening at the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) since its formation last year. A new collective body of organisations, FIESTA was created to address the skills gap issue within the furnishing industry. The need for a dedicated industry organisation was proposed at The Furniture Makers’ Company’s Bridging the Gap conference in May last year. The conference followed the 2015 Mind the Gap report and event, organised by the Company and the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA), which identified that a skills shortage is developing within the furnishing industry.
FP297 Pages.indd 46
FIESTA marks the first time that trade associations representing every single sector within the furnishing trade have come together to address the troubling skills gap, with its members including: The Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF), the British Contract Furnishing Association (BCFA), the British Furniture Manufacturers Association (BFM), The Furniture Makers’ Company (FMC), the Kitchen, Bedrooms, Bathrooms National Training Group (KBB NTG), the Kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA), The Kitchen Education Trust (TKET) and the National Bed Federation (NBF). Since then FIESTA has been working on a solution to support businesses to recruit and up-skill staff by utilising the apprenticeship levy and other funding reforms, which came into effect in April 2017. The FIESTA executive has recently approved the entering into of an agreement with the Apprentice Management Group (AMG) to establish Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus, which has a specialist apprentice recruitment agency and Apprentice Training Agency (ATA) at its core. Gary Baker, chairman of FIESTA, says: “For the very first time the furniture and interiors sector has a centralised organisation with the focus, contacts and services to attract talent into the industry.” ATAs are a well-proven mechanism for supporting businesses to recruit apprentices, linking them with the best training providers, and funding. The distinctive feature of the ATA model is that it is the ATA that acts as
02/07/2018 15:11
47 the apprentice’s employer, working alongside the host employer with the goal that the apprentice joins the employer’s permanent staff at the end of the apprenticeship. The benefits for the employer, include support with recruitment, responsibility for the wages, tax, National Insurance, supervision of the apprentice during training and links with an approved training provider. For this service the employer pays the ATA a fee, which is based on the wage agreed for the apprentice. Gary says: “We are delighted to be working with the Apprentice Management Group. Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus will be a pathway for employers to recruit and develop the skills of the next generation. Companies that sign up to the Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus will receive advice and guidance on the best training that is available to the sector.” Gary adds: “Using Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus, Micro and SME non-levy paying employers will be able to access a much wider selection of funded skills training, while large employers can outsource the apprenticeship management to obtain best value for money and real time monitoring from their apprentice levy digital accounts. Micro businesses, SMEs and large companies like the fact the detail of employing and apprentice is managed by a specialist service provider.” FIESTA has launched a dedicated website, www.fiestalearning.com, to support its mission of addressing education and training issues within the industry. The easy-to-use website features useful information for employers and people wishing to pursue a career in the industry, case studies, the latest news from the organisation and an events section, in addition to more information about the Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus. www.fiestalearning.com

48 PANELS & PANEL PROCESSING Exciting times at Decorative Panels Components as the company is installing a fully-automated edgebanding line at its state-of-the-art factory in Elland, Leeds. Purchased from Biesse and measuring a staggering 59m, this new line will focus primarily on high quality fascia production, processing tapes from 0.4 to 2mm thick.
For the perfect edge finish – look to dp-seamless Replacing three manually fed and stacked high speed edgebanding machines, the line further increases the overall quality of Decorative Panels products while also greatly adding to the efficiency of the factory. Panels are automatically fed into the machine, then sized and edgebanded all round through linked first- and second-pass machines, grooved if required, cleaned and then automatically stacked at speeds of up to 32 parts per minute. As a result, Decorative Panels’ edgebanding capacity is significantly increased while manual intervention is eliminated. The main aim of this investment was to introduce the very best edgebanded panels technology has to offer. The line is equipped with three different glueline technologies therefore allowing the company to offer good/better/best categories at very affordable price points:
sngised d yreve rof f elyts s
EVA glue EVA is the most common glue available and allows us to provide a suitable glueline for price sensitive product. 2x PUR glue The use of PUR allows for absolute minimal visibility of a glueline. The company has equipped the line to distribute PUR glue in two colours, either natural or white subject to panel colour, to further minimise any sight of the glueline on the panel. Of course, on lighter colours, for example, white glue would be selected. dp-seamless To achieve the very best finish available on the market, Decorative Panels introduces the new dpSeamless edgebanding standard. The new line is fully equipped to process Rehau Raukantex Pro zero joint technology edgebanding tape which cleverly creates the perfect invisible joint by means of a colour co-ordinated functional layer on the reverse. This layer acts as the bonding agent once heated with the Biesse Airforce technology.
FP297 Pages.indd 48
It is important to note that in order to obtain the best results, Decorative Panels recognises that it is not only essential to have the latest bonding technology, but also the very best specification of sizing, trimming and finishing systems installed. Every aspect of the new line has been specified with full NC control allowing complete fine tuning to ensure the finished tape profile glides seamlessly up to meet the panel fascia. All of this technology pulled together guarantees a truly spectacular finish that revolutionises the panel market. The additional advantage of course

50 PANELS & PANEL PROCESSING Homag has extended its Sawteq range with a host of innovative technologies for panel dividing. These products have been developed to automate batch size 1 production, increase operator accuracy, reduce production times and maximise machinery performance. From robotic technology to cloud-based software, Homag is consistently leading the field with its innovative technology.
Homag extends Sawteq range with innovative solutions for panel dividing Sawteq B-320 flexTec – mass scale production for batch-size 1 workpieces As part of Homag’s range of innovative panel saws, the Sawteq B-320 flexTec has revolutionised batch size 1 production with its robotic workpiece handling technology. Batch size 1 production was previously seen as expensive and time consuming. The B-320, however, is highly flexible; it can easily handle the increasing production pressures of bespoke customer orders. This innovative cutting cell is designed specifically for automatically processing single panels. It completely redefines the flow of parts, whether used as a standalone solution or interlinked in a production line. With its unique design, the B-320 is optimised down to the last detail for cutting single panels. The addition of an automated labelling system for all workpieces guarantees 100% accuracy throughout the ongoing production process. Designed with a smaller footprint, the B-320 flexTec features only one saw body, one program fence, one machine table and one waste removal system. This allows for powerful production and higher throughput for even the smallest of workshops. Capable of handling up to 1500 parts per shift, manufacturers can produce high volumes of bespoke pieces. In addition to all this, the B-320 flexTec also features Homag’s latest energy saving systems to keep running costs low. The B-320’s robotic technology sets new standards in terms of reliability and quality, delivering virtually error-free production. With unlimited recuts and flexible

cutting patterns, the B-320 flexTec has re-imagined the panel dividing process. The Sawteq B-320 flexTec can also be coupled with a Storeteq storage system for a fully automated solution. This reduces bespoke production down to just a one-man operation and allows for staff to focus on other areas of production. intelliGuide – innovative machine assistance Homag’s intelliGuide is the first operator assistance system in the history of panel dividing technology. It enables saws to respond to the actions of the machine operator in an intelligent manner. The intelliGuide software packages range from basic, to advanced and then through to professional level. Each of the packages is made up of modules which can be used individually or combined to create an intelligent
system that reacts interactively to the operator: • CADmatic 5 – This is the foundation package. It features new assistance graphics that guide the operator through the cutting process step by step via a 3D model on the monitor. This means there are virtually no errors and the operator is always in full control. • LED strip lights – The addition of different coloured LED strip lights at the cutting line ensures efficiency and safety for the operator. The machine operator can immediately see when the saw is ready for new material (yellow lights), if a part has been fully processed (green lights), or if waste parts are about to come off the saw (white/orange lights). Even when two strips are being cut to length simultaneously, the LED lights clearly show each work step for each strip, so no mistakes are made. • intelliGuide advanced – The
addition of a camera system allows the machine to deliver images from the front machine table for production monitoring. This means the saw can always see and know which part or strip the operator is inserting and if it’s in alignment. Consequently, the machine is able to react and correct any operator errors. • intelliGuide professional – The laser projection system displays self-explanatory pictograms on the workpiece to provide the operator with clear handling instructions. Direction guidance and rotation arrows are projected onto the workpiece so no errors can be made. The intelliGuide module options provide compatible Sawteq models with completely intuitive machine operation that verifiably leads to significantly shorter throughput times, increased output and reduced errors.

Homag’s intelliDivide software – real time updates on production
intelliDivide – software as a service To further improve panel dividing efficiencies, Homag has enabled manufacturers to link Sawteq products to intelliDivide highperformance software. The intelliDivide software provides real time updates on production times, material usage and machinery status. The software uses the collected data to provide the operator with suggestions on how to improve the efficiency of the production process. These suggestions can include the shortest machining time, how to reduce material wastage or the simplest handling routine perfectly adapted to production requirements. Operators can access intelliDivide either through permanently installed software or directly from the tapio cloud. This means no additional hardware is necessary so users do not need to worry about maintenance or software updates. With an easy to view comparison of suggested optimisation results, intelliDivide provides a low cost introduction to optimisation. Power Concept Practive – Increases saw output by up to 40% Homag’s Power Concept Practive allows several workpiece strips with different cross cuts to be cut to length together. This concept is available for all Homag single saws without a lifting table and
FP297 Pages.indd 51
with a saw blade projection of up to 80mm. At the heart of this technology is a clamp that can be moved separately. Using this clamp, several strips with different cross cuts can be cut to length together, considerably increasing material throughput. With the ability to cut several workpieces to length at the same time, the Power Concept solution can increase saw output by up to 40%. With much shorter work cycles and improved material flow, the Power Concept is a potent addition to any workshop. The system is an attractively priced high-tech solution with minimum space requirement that lowers the costs per cut. module45 – innovation for the craft sector With its new module45 unit, Homag is moving towards an even more efficient future for cutting processes. This world’s first innovation allows all bevel cuts to be completed directly on Homag saws. It is fast, simple and the bevel angle is continuously adjustable. Whether you are looking at shopfitting, joint work or interior fittings, bevel cuts are an integral part of everyday woodworking production. After cutting has been completed on a panel saw, bevel cuts are usually dealt with on a separate sliding table saw. This not only increases the cost of production
and takes up more foot print, but also ties up operators as it increases the amount of manual handling needed. Another costly disadvantage is that materials can easily be damaged when they are transported from one machine to another. However, module45 eliminates such manual handling errors. With a stationary saw carriage, the module45 tilting saw blade can be seamlessly adjusted to angles of 0 to 46°. Furthermore, for changing saw blades, the table plate can be opened, allowing easy access to the saw carriage. Additional benefits include dedicated systems for contact pressure and dust extraction, plus a fold-down right-angled fence for maximum flexibility at the front of the saw. module45 allows bevel cuts to be completed directly on a Homag beam saw and reduces the process to a one-man operation. The module45 unit also creates less waste and provides a higher quality finish thanks to less transport damage as the material remains on
the one machine. Now available for many Homag saws, module45 can be retrofitted to compatible Homag machinery. With a low initial investment cost and a whole host of benefits, module45 has an unbeatable costbenefit ratio. Homag Finance – affordable solutions for all Sawteq’s range of innovative technology is more accessible than ever before, irrespective of the size of business. With solutions suitable for entry level businesses, right up to industrial-sized manufacturers, there are production enhancements for all companies. Additionally, Homag has a range of finance options available to enable any manufacturers to invest in this advanced technology to automate their facilities. If you would like to see a demonstration of any Homag machinery or receive further product information, call Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

52 PANELS & PANEL PROCESSING CompacMel Plus, the innovative material from Spanish manufacturer, Finsa, provides the benefits of a compact grade laminate but at a more budget-friendly price. Designer Alexandra Izeboud found out why this product was the perfect choice for her project.
CompacMel Plus – once again in the spotlight for Lawcris In the world of furniture production, it is common that certain applications may have high demands of the materials used. Finding a product that is consistently reliable can be hugely beneficial to designers and manufacturers alike. Products which are versatile, strong and interesting can be hard to come by, but once discovered, they can become firm favourites. This is exactly what furniture designer Alexandra Izeboud was looking for when she was commissioned to produce a hard-working bookcase for her client, Edwin Pelser, in May of this year. The objectives of her design were to create something that was sleek yet strong, capable of holding her client’s vast book collection, and that created interesting interplay of geometric shapes and colours for an aesthetically pleasing, functional piece of furniture. Additionally, Alexandra wanted to ensure that the bookcase used minimal fixings, and instead used a clever method of slide-in connections to create a piece that was strong and sturdy, but also modular, flexible and easy to dismantle. Alexandra chose CompacMel Plus for a number of reasons. At 13mm in thickness, it was the perfect option for the slim and sleek design. Additionally, the black core meant that an accent edging effect was achieved, creating the playfulness of colour contrast the client wanted, as well as saving time and money on edging. CompacMel Plus is also renowned for its exemplary machinability. The CompacMel Plus performed as desired, cutting like butter, without breaking the melamine layer on top. Made of high-density-fibreboard, the core of CompacMel
Plus is incredibly strong yet versatile. Holding a load of 25kg over only a 70cm span, the strength of the material was a huge asset to the design. The project was a huge success thanks to CompacMel Plus, both for Alexandra and her client, resulting in a piece of furniture that is both a visual and an engineering triumph. Available in 18 decors, the whole CompacMel Plus range can be found on Lawcris’ website, where brochures and free samples are also available. www.lawcris.co.uk

Sophisticated drawer systems from Ney StarBox StarBox, the flagship Eco drawer system from Ney boasts a premium soft close drawer programme with affordability in mind. The unique selling point for manufacturers is that the drawer has been designed to take 18mm board. For many smaller producers this can make production quicker and cheaper because 18mm board does not have to be routed down to 16mm to fit, saving a process. By the same token 16mm board does not have to be purchased specifically for drawers, allowing optimisation of the board with previously scrap material able to be used for drawer bases and backs. StarBox has many different possibilities that cover all aspects of perceived value. For the contract market manufacturers tend to use just a gallery rail for their pan drawers and for the higher end a glass side panel is the choice. The current market trend is to have internal drawers with aluminium front panels in tall larder units and with StarBox, glass front and side panels can be added for the top end of the market.
Again the unique selling point for Ney’s customers is that the drawer has been designed, just like StarBox, to take 18mm board. The impressive design feature of KuBox is that you do not require a gallery rail to go to a higher drawer; Ney has three different drawer height options – 90mm, 128mm and 175mm – giving a very modern contemporary finish. However there is a retro-fit gallery rail if you do require a higher drawer front. Ney has seen the trend of the KuBox to work particularly well in bedrooms simply because
it is a natural upgrade to a single wall metalsided drawer and the iron grey finish works very well with the woodgrain boards that have been flooding the bedroom market. The Eco drawer range truly allows customers to be versatile with their product offering as this options can meet all aspects of price – but even more importantly, when opting for Starbox or Kubox as a soft close drawer partner, confidence in reliability, quality and longevity will quickly be realised. www.ney.co.uk

Finsa launches its new UK range of special veneers Veneers connect us with the essence of wood, creating a decorative surface that we can see, feel and touch. Wood veneer is a versatile material that adapts to new trends without losing its essence. Finsa’s Studio Natur range includes nine brand new veneers that move away from the standards, offering a closer approach to high-end design. The selection includes exotic species as well as more traditional ones, either in natural tones or treated through dyeing or sophisticated fuming processes. As stated in Finsa’s Trendbook for 2018-2019, tinted greys are increasingly inspired by natural references that help to calm the mind. This is why the company has included two grey veneers in the collection. The Grey Vintage Oak has an aged grey tone with cracks and open knots over a black background. The second option provided by Finsa is Grigio Oak, which also has a grey tone and is characterised by homogeneous and straight grain. The result is a very versatile and elegant surface inspired by high-end design. Soft-effect veneers like this one lift the colours into another dimension and can be combined with deep and soft melamines to discover the perfect light and dark balance. When talking about statement pieces, Mumbai Rosewood will be a great choice. It is a refined reconstituted design characterised by the arrangement of the dark, almost black veins of authentic rosewood over a mid-tone brown background. This veneer combines natural woods to create a sustainable alternative to the endangered Asian rosewood. For more neutral looks, Studio Natur includes best-selling oaks such as the Rustic Oak or the Nature Vintage Oak. Full of character, the look of these oaks includes knots, natural cracks and light colour contrasts that allow the creation of calm rustic spaces. Natural wood surfaces are known to add interest and are the perfect base for colour combinations. The Studio Natur collection is available on top quality 19mm MDF in the standard format of 2440 x 1220mm. Other formats and thicknesses are available upon request. www.finsa.com

Osmo’s seamless surfaces With the famous spring clean season amongst us, professional decorator, JG Decorator was contracted to renovate and refresh a composite oak kitchen worktop and shelving area in a family home. Thanks to its hard-wearing properties and aesthetically pleasing finish, Osmo UK Polyx®-Oil was the ideal choice to rejuvenate the high traffic surfaces. The kitchen has a classic countryside look to it, so the client requested a natural finish that wouldn’t distract from the design of the room. Jonathan Graham, a partner in JG Decorator, recognised that the traditional oil-based finish that Osmo supplies would meet these requirements, while also providing a durable and protective finish that is essential in the kitchen. Preparation of the project began by degreasing the existing surfaces. JG Decorator then sanded the surfaces achieving a level finish, before thoroughly vacuuming to remove the residual dust before applying the finish. Jonathan then applied the premium finish with a synthetic brush, achieving a deep and long-lasting penetration, emphasising the wood’s natural beauty. Due to Osmo finishes being very viscid and containing both oil and wax, the wood absorbs the finish to provide a smooth surface, resulting in the extra level of sanding not being required. Once dried, the finish achieved a rich semi sheen, completing the country kitchen look. “I was extremely happy with the finished project,” comments Jonathan, “I knew Polyx-Oil would provide a long-lasting, hardwearing and natural appearance, perfect for the well-used kitchen surfaces.” www.osmouk.com

Makita’s Twin 18V (36V) Brushless LXT Plunge Saw now comes with AWS technology In 2017 Makita launched the in-demand DSP600 Twin 18V Brushless Plunge Saw. Now, the same model, but featuring a 36V motor and the Makita Auto-Start Wireless System (AWS) has landed. AWS technology allows the new DSP601ZJU plunge saw to automatically connect to the compatible Makita dust extractor, saving the effort of manually switching it on. A unique chip is supplied with the new plunge saw that enables the user to pair it up with the selected dust extractor. Once paired, the dust extractor will automatically start once the trigger on the saw is pulled. This plunge saw is powered by two 18V lithium-ion batteries in series to supply energy to the 36v DC motor drive system. It generates as much power as the AC mains machine that can drive the 165mm blade up to 6300rpm, and provide a maximum cutting depth of 56mm with the vertical blade setting. The bevel range is -1° to +48° and the position of the cutting line
is always the same regardless of the bevel angle. Splinter-free cutting is achieved by engaging the depth stop which enables a 2mm preliminary groove to be cut before the full depth of cut is made. As with the DSP600 the new DSP601 is equipped with a variable speed control dial, soft start and electric brake, and the innovative Automatic Torque Drive Technology
(ADT), which automatically changes the cutting speed for optimum operation; effectively by sensing the load conditions on the blade and adjusting the power supply will maintain drive shaft speed. Makita has also introduced a new 1m Guide Rail which is sure to be a popular choice for use with this new plunge saw as well as other
tools in the Makita woodworking range. It has a replaceable splinter guard, anti-slip strips on the underside and top running strips for a smooth glide. A new Guide Rail Bag is also now available which is designed to hold two guide rails, up to 1.5m in length, and a connector, all designed to provide ultimate protection for these high performance accessories. The new DVC864LZ Twin 18V (36V) Brushless L-Class Dust Extractor is the first extractor to feature the new AWS technology. It has maximum sealed suction power of 9.8kPa with the powerful 36V motor system producing a maximum air flow of 2.1m³/min. This is a dry type vacuum with HEPA filter that removes 99.0% of dust with Limit Value for occupational exposure >1.0mg/ m³ which means this extractor can be used for processes involving mica, china clay and gypsum. Up to 10 tools can be paired to the DVC864LZ via AWS at the same time. www.makitauk.com

IP Ownership and the importance of getting it right Simon Haslam of Abel & Imray, a firm of UK and European patent attorneys, explains on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) how your business can avoid pitfalls associated with the ownership of intellectual property (IP) in the fifth of this series of six articles looking at IP. Why is it important? It is becoming increasingly important for many furniture businesses to be able to enforce their IP rights to stop third parties from ripping off their ideas. Such IP rights include copyright, unregistered and registered design rights, trade marks and patents. As a brief reminder, copyright protects drawings, paintings, company logos, website content and works of artistic craftsmanship – such as iconic furniture designs, like the Eames DSW chair. Unregistered and registered design rights can protect the outward appearance of a product. Patents can protect technical inventions, and registered and unregistered trade marks protect branding. If your company does not own its IP then it cannot sell or license the IP, or stop others from unauthorised use of the IP. Your company may infringe the rights of third parties who own the IP. When do ownership issues arise? IP ownership issues often rear their heads when least wanted. When you are trying to sell a business, a due diligence exercise will typically take place which will find out who owns the IP. You will have to show who owns the IP when trying to assert IP against third parties. Unsurprisingly, IP ownership disputes often arise when IP becomes valuable, and they are then often difficult to resolve. Several IP ownership scenarios are discussed below which highlight some possible pitfalls. “We developed a chair ages ago. Do we own the IP?” For any IP right, you first need to identify all of the people who made some intellectual input to the IP (the designer(s), creator(s) of the copyright work or the inventor(s)). Each of those people will be the first owner of the IP, unless
TOP TIPS FOR AVOIDING IP OWNERSHIP PROBLEMS • Keep good records of how new designs or other copyright-protectable works are created. • Ensure that any agreement on IP ownership is in writing and preferably signed before any IP is generated • Ensure that you have agreements with employees, contractors, designers and directors, and anyone else generating IP • Take advantage of the advice of your patent attorney or trade mark attorney.
FP297 Pages.indd 72
the IP was generated during the course of their employment, in which case the first owner will automatically be that person’s employer. It is therefore vital that you identify who made what contribution to the IP. Once the contributors have been identified, you need to assess the relationship of each contributor with the person or company which wants to own the IP, and any agreement in place between the contributor and the person who wants to own the IP. If the company does not own the IP, then additional agreements may need to be signed. It is vital that good records are kept as to who made what contribution and who owns each of those contributions. It is advisable to have IP ownership agreements in place before work starts. Contractors, directors and consultants may well not be employees and therefore you cannot rely on the IP employment provisions. Appropriate agreements should be put in place with those people. “I’ve paid for a designer to design my logo and website. Surely I own the rights?” If there’s no other agreement in place, any rights (such as copyright and unregistered design right) in the logo and the website will be owned by the designer (or their employer, if the designer created the logo and website content during the course of their employment). You may have an implied licence to use the logo and website by virtue of the commissioning of the design of the logo and website, but you would not own the rights. “The company cleaner has developed a great looking cabinet in his spare time. We’re looking to make it” Assuming that the cabinet was not designed during the course of the cleaner’s employment, it is likely that the cleaner will own the rights in the cabinet. They could stop you making and selling the cabinet without their permission. Maybe you should come to some sort of agreement with them?
“As a one-off, we jointly designed a new highend kitchen unit with the assistance of a local kitchen business we were in touch with. We’re a small company, but one of our UK contacts is now interested in mass producing the units for export to Europe and wants to buy the relevant rights off us. We are keen to sell the design of the kitchen unit on to them as it’s not part of our core business. However, the local kitchen business has now been taken over by one of the big players and we’ve been unable to get them to engage with us on the matter. What should I do?” Unless there is an agreement to the contrary both your company and the local kitchen business (or possibly the business that bought them out) will jointly own the rights in the kitchen unit (unregistered design rights). You cannot sell the rights in the unit without permission from the co-owner of the relevant rights. Your patent attorney or trade mark attorney will be able to advise you on how best to protect your IP outside the UK and what routes you might take to achieve that and on how to ensure that IP ownership issues are dealt with properly before they cause problems for your business.
For further information on any of the points discussed, or have a query on any intellectual property matter, Simon would be happy to assist. Email him at – simon.haslam@abelimray.com. A local patent attorney can be found via CIPA’s website – www.cipa.org.uk/find-a-patent-attorney/

Hesse’s flame-retardant coatings offers EN 13501-1 and IMO certification The increasing demand for coatings that are certified and tested to recognised fire standards has ensured that Hesse Lignal developed its PU Multicoat lacquer to meet this requirement. Hesse Lignal offers a comprehensive range of fully tested and certified lacquers that meet multiple fire standards. Their ranges carry certificates from DIN 4102 B1, IMO, French M1 classification and on their Fantastic Fill Primer and Fantastic Colour ranges EN 13501-1. The DE 4259x is a two component multi-coat acrylic PU lacquer that boasts a three-day pot
FP297 Pages.indd 74
life. This multi-coat lacquer meets the EC-type examination certificate IMO-certification, flame-retardant coating agent for seagoing vessels, which puts it at the forefront of marine coatings. In addition this product meets the French M1 classification as well as the test certificate for flame retardancy to B1 according to DIN 4102. This high specification has not meant any compromise on finish – the lacquer is resilient, and formulated with additional light protection. It is a coat-on-coat system that achieves impressive results and is universally applicable. The product can also be used on
bleached wood and boasts high flow and levelling characteristics. The stringent testing criteria means the Hesse PU Multicoat is ideal for high-stress environments such as restaurants, kitchens, bathrooms or any area demanding the highest levels of both chemical and mechanical resistance. It can also be pigmented to suit almost all colour tones and a wide range of gloss levels. The Fantastic Fill primer takes this a step further. It boasts the certification for EN 13501-1 and has the ability to coat MDF in one coat. The Fantastic Colour also carries the same certification and goes over the top of the primer again with one coat or can be used directly on MDF.
As to be expected from Hesse, safety does not stop with the fire testing. Their coatings are free of wood preservatives, toxic-heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers, formaldehyde, and volatile aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. Hesse Lignal “will not compromise on its customers’ health at any cost”. Hesse is using its partnership with Redwood Innovations to distribute this product in the UK. Customers wishing to try the various fire rated systems can call Redwood and benefit from strong technical back-up over the phone, and on site if required. 02392 233310 E sales@redwoodinnovations www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Due to its extra thick composition, the 5x5 pallet wrap has a superior holding force and its high grade quality will enable businesses to reduce consumption. The company has also introduced its new, cost-effective paper mailing sack range which offers an environmentally alternative to traditional polythene mailing sacks. The recyclable water-resistant

a secure bottom and generous gusset to support a wide range of products Kite Packaging has also extended its postal and envelope range by adding two new ranges to its business envelopes and vibrant, metallic bubble-lined envelopes. Each of the designs provides packaging solutions for opposite ends of the spectrum. The kaleidoscopic, metallic bubble envelopes are sure to stand out in the post, leaving a lasting impression on customers. The bubble linings ensure the ultimate cushioning solution for maximum postal protection and the vibrant collection is available in four colours; gold, silver, red and black. The cost-effective business envelopes are an ever-popular choice in the everyday business world and a useful postal agent in the busy home. They provide the ideal packaging solution for a range of documents and are available in brown and white with three different sizes to choose from. Their classic wallet style design means they are able to secure and protect documents with ease. Lastly, Kite has announced three new product additions to its sealing and strapping ranges. The new range of cable ties, additional strapping kits and polypropylene twine have just been added to Kite’s leading website, broadening the company’s extensive product range. The new polypropylene twine is a strong, durable solution that is water, oil and abrasion resistant, equipping it for a wide range of industries. Businesses can secure

goods during transportation by simply wrapping the twine around the packages, securing a strong outer bind. A further eight strapping kit sizes have also been added to cater for a wider range of individual preferences for businesses. These are available in a range of specifications including steel strapping, polyester strapping and corded strapping. Kite is also offering multicoloured cable ties to allow for colour coded organisation in the workplace whilst also ensuring secure closure of domestic and commercial packages. The ties are ideal for implementing a clear, concise system in the pick and pack process throughout a range of industries and their vibrant appearance makes packages eyecatching to the end user. 02476 420065 www.kitepackaging.co.uk
