Comment Here we are again – it’s W Exhibition and Elements showtime. I don’t know about you, but I find the biennial gathering at the NEC a mix of excitement about finding out what’s going with the industry’s key manufacturers and suppliers, combined with catching up with colleagues and friends to see how they are faring in this challenging marketplace. Oh, and there’s also the fact that the show reminds us we’re all two years older than the last time we all got together!

One of the highlights on the machinery and equipment side of things that I will be most interested in this year will be the progress of Industry 4.0 options and increased adoption of automation in manufacturing. On the fittings and materials side of the show, there will be a plethora of new designs and options to add freshness or improve productivity in your manufacturing. Another key issue at the show this year is the continuing educational stance of the event – new this year is The Education Zone, a place for companies and individuals to meet with experts to discuss ways of improving their business and sourcing new talent. Everything from apprenticeships, retaining talent and getting your head around funding as well as practical advice all designed to help you and your business. And finally, from our stand at the show this year, we will be launching Connect, a classic trade directory in printed form as well as online. Among issues discussed around the halls at this year’s event will of course be Editorial director Brexit and what it could mean for a market which is heavily reliant on products manufactured overseas. Judges confirmed for 2018 Elements of Innovation Awards The Elements of Innovation Awards are back for 2018, taking place during the UK’s only dedicated furniture components show, Elements and woodworking machinery and materials show, the W Exhibition. The awards will see pioneering product entries from the show’s exhibitors shortlisted to be in with the chance of winning a prestigious Gold, Silver or Bronze award. The independent judging panel – which has been chosen to represent key areas of the furniture design and manufacturing industry

– will be made up of members from the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers’, the Institute of Carpenters, Buckinghamshire New University, the British Woodworking Federation and joinery and interior fit-out company, Edmont Ltd. The final products will be shortlisted by the judges before the event, and will be available to view in the show’s dedicated Elements of Innovation Zone. The awards will be presented to the winners on Monday 1st October at 3pm. The presentation is open to all visitors and will

offer the audience a unique opportunity to see the best products new to the market and talk to the winners about their award-winning products. Elements and the W Exhibition will be taking place from the 30th September-3rd October 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham. So, who’s who on the judging panel? Helen Hewitt, British Woodworking Federation A textile designer by trade, Helen Hewitt is a self-proclaimed creative design junky with a scrupulous eye for detail. Transferring her skills into the manufacturing sector more than 15 years ago, Helen is now acting CEO of the British Woodworking Federation. Helen brings a wealth of experience in both design and manufacturing to the judging panel and with a clear passion for encouraging young talent and empowering originality. She wants the awards to be a platform to inspire the industry and celebrate its achievements. Helen adds: “There is something very special about being part of something that champions the industry. I have a great respect for people that can create something from nothing. It’s a real skill and one that needs to be recognised. “Being a judge at the Elements of Innovation Awards is about honouring this achievement and giving both the company and the individuals the recognition they deserve. I’m excited to see how each entry has gone through the production process – from the initial concept to the final product – and to see the final product first hand.”

Gary Smith, Institute of Carpenters With almost 40 years of experience in the furniture production sector, Gary Smith is no stranger to the world of design and manufacturing. Following a lengthy career as a carpenter and machinery programmer, Gary now specialises in commercial CAD design, working on a whole host of well-known shop fronts including Chanel and Patek Philippe. A board member of the Institute of Carpenters and a true advocate for the industry, Gary brings a great understanding of the complete manufacturing cycle to the judging panel. Gary adds: “I have a great interest in how things are made. I have been attending the W Exhibition for may years and for me, it has always been a hive of activity. To be asked to join the judging line-up is a great opportunity for me to immerse myself in an area I have great enthusiasm for and to put the latest innovations to the test.”

Paul Lighterness, Buckinghamshire New University Paul Lighterness studied at the Royal College of Art and spent 15 years working in product design. From 3D model-making to product visualisation, Paul’s’ creative skills and passion to inspire talent led him to his current role as Kitchen Design Course leader at Buckinghamshire New University. The course, which was the first Kitchen Design course in the UK, works closely with the industry and has gained huge support from the likes of Blum, ArtiCAD and many other industry leaders. Paul adds: “I’ve always had a great interest in design and innovation. I’m a firm believer in pushing the boundaries of design and adapting traditional techniques to create new and exciting products. To be part of the judging process means that I can gauge a true understanding of the design process, whilst appreciating the work and craftsmanship that goes into each entry.”

Hayden Davies, The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers’ Former CEO of FIRA (the Furniture Industry Research Association) and Master of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, Hayden has had an active role in the furniture industry for over 20 years. With a degree in Civil Engineering - which he gained from the University of Birmingham – Hayden has become a successful entrepreneur and an advocate for education and excellence in the furniture industry. Hayden adds: “Supporting innovation and encouraging talent goes right to the heart of what the Furniture Makers’ Company does. I believe if our industry is to survive and prosper in the modern, global world, innovation must play a critical role and we need to shout about our achievements. “We should encourage innovation and celebrate its success wherever possible. I believe my time as CEO of FIRA gave me a broad experience of the furniture industry and the disciplines of impartiality, integrity and independence that I will endeavor to bring to the judging panel.”

Luke Parry, production manager at Edmont Joinery Starting his career as an apprentice in the joinery and construction industry, Luke’s natural interest and honed skills have seen him work on a range of projects from period home restoration to bespoke, cutting edge furniture design. Bringing a sense of practical application to the judging panel, Luke is not averse to testing unique products before they are put into production and, with experience in a wide range of manufacturing techniques, he appreciates the knowledge and commitment it takes to develop a groundbreaking product. Luke adds: “We are an industry that relies on highly skilled individuals and because of this, we need to reward talent wherever possible. Innovation can sound like a buzz word but pioneering techniques and original product design can make a huge difference to our industry and the way we create and design furniture.

Gowercroft celebrates 20 years of high end joinery Gowercroft Joinery is celebrating 20 years of manufacturing premium quality timber doors and windows for new build, renovation and heritage projects. Formed in 1998, the Derbyshirebased company, has gone from strength to strength from a modest three-man joinery team, using second-hand machinery, to an award-winning manufacturer with a reputation for quality and innovation and a string of high profile projects to its name. The company was originally formed when David Brown, a skilled joiner, joined forces with Chris Madge, an East Midlands business adviser, with a vision of being a topquality manufacturer of high-end joinery products. The early years were difficult, with the small team operating from a workshop in Wirksworth, fitting security doors in London and supplying windows and doors to a laminated oak products marketing company. “In those days, we were reliant on old 1960s machinery plus a lot of grit and determination. We worked long days, often amounting to 100 hours a week, just managing to break even and pay all the wages,” recalls Chris. However, by focusing on the development of its own high-quality product range, the company was

able to expand its client base and, with David spearheading the sales, soon gained a reputation for outstanding customer service and the ability to take on very challenging bespoke projects. With its meticulous “It’s got to be right” perfectionist approach, the Gowercroft team won major London contracts from developers, who had previously been let down by other suppliers, leading to a number of lucrative projects including a major development on Bishops Avenue, reputedly the most expensive street in the capital. “Our resilience, flexibility and determination to deliver top quality

enabled us to punch well above our weight in those early days, as we took on ambitiously large and demanding projects. It is an approach which has stood us in very good stead ever since,” says Chris. In 2008, the move to its current larger premises in Alfreton, Derbyshire marked another step forward with the company investing in a better-equipped factory, whilst benefiting from the area’s excellent road network and access to a skilled local workforce. Then, with the appointment of now managing director, Andrew Madge, in 2011 and production director Darren Young in 2013,

Gowercroft started to develop into the streamlined operation that it is today with a highly motivated team of 46 committed to delivering industry-leading performance, design innovation and service. Last year the company launched its revolutionary new Winston and Richmond Heritage windows, specifically designed for Listed properties. With a combination of traditional joinery, ultra-thin Pilkington Spacia vacuum glazing and a bespoke micro-porous paint system, they it not only wowed the conservation market but scooped a 2017 Build It Award for Best Windows. Recognition of the company’s expertise has continued to increase with a number of prestigious projects including Winston Churchill’s former home and the high profile Photography Studio for Juergen Teller, which was shortlisted for the 2017 Stirling Prize. “We are so proud that by persevering through the hard times and remaining true to our core principles of quality, innovation and service, we have transformed a small local business into a highly successful national enterprise with an industry-wide reputation and we are confident of a bright future ahead,” says Chris. www.gowercroft.co.uk

Young designer Felix Smith on the merits of Hi-Macs Felix Smith, who graduated from Northumbria University in 2017 with a degree in 3D Design has recently started using Hi-Macs in his designs. He has just completed an innovative portable table and bench set, using HiMacs in Lucent Sapphire. Immediately after graduating, Smith found his ideal job at Raskl Design Studio in Newcastle, where there was a project for the Sunderland Fire Station, which required eleven module display cabinets. These needed to be robust enough to withstand dayto-day wear and tear, but also look attractive and be easy to manufacture in high volume. HiMacs fitted the bill perfectly. “I love Hi-Macs because of its excellent finish.” Enthuses Smith, “Although it feels like stone it is

manufactured in the same way as timber, but with less finishing processes making it more efficient for mass manufacture. This was an important consideration for this project.” Having enjoyed working with the solid surface material, Smith was quick to employ it in his next project – a portable table and chair set. “I saw its potential for an application in furniture due to the stability of Hi-Macs and the durability of the material. It is perfect for a table and bench surface which has to be capable of withstanding everyday scratches and all the accidents a busy life throws at us.” The Nomad Table and Chairs were made from HiMacs in Lucent Sapphire, but can be custom made in any shade. It has a painted beech solid wood

frame. Hi-Macs is an acrylic stone mix, which is highly resistant to daily wear and tear. It is very hygienic due to the ability to join it with virtually seamless joins, and also extremely easy to clean. It can also be thermoformed into almost any

Wilkins Joinery expands workshop, with increased work space, Smart Spray and 1Stop service from Quest Hardware Wilkins Joinery has been operating for over 30 years as a family-run business, with Neil Wilkins and his two sons, plus a committed workforce. The company’s workshop in leafy Weston on the Green, Oxfordshire works on a wide range of timber-based projects locally and further afield, producing high quality bespoke joinery including windows, doors, staircases, furniture, kitchens and other timber structures like conservatories and orangeries. As the business has grown, Wilkins Joinery has expanded its facilities to incorporate an increased workshop, spray booth area, larger offices and a show room. The increased work space provided room for a 1Stop service

from Quest. This is a lockable cupboard that stores all the consumables that Wilkins Joinery needs to run its workshop on a daily basis. Wilkins Joinery only

Franco says the Point K2 TOP is very productive, simple, accurate and flexible. “It’s absolutely affordable and you can also square pieces as in conventional nesting. While the machine is making the four pieces, the operator can edgeband them and assemble them. “We can say that, roughly speaking, every four minutes a cabinet comes out of the machine, already assembled. If you have multiple cells like this with an edgebander, it will substitute the router, the saw, the drilling machine and the profiling machine. Carl O’Meara, managing director of Ormskirk-based woodworking machinery agent J & C O’Meara

J & C O’Meara, the Ormskirk, Lancashire-based woodworking machinery agent blessed with many good old fashioned values fosters a simple and direct approach with its customers. This has seen the business evolve successfully over three decades from refurbishing old machines in a garage, to representing not only its own impressive Genisis range , but also representing leading international manufacturers and its latest agency, leading full range CNC machinery manufacturer, the AES Group, here in the UK market.

From little acorns… The story of a thoroughly decent and professional machinery agent Established in 1990, Joseph and Carl O’Meara began acquiring used machines, one at a time at first, refurbishing them and then moved on to batches of machinery to upgrade and resell. “The very first machine we bought was an old Dominion morticer,” explains Carl, “we picked it up in our van, took it back to my dad’s house, and at the back of his garage, we did a bit of a refurb on it, and we sold it on. By 1992, this had developed into acquiring surplus machinery and equipment from auctions and liquidations which the company traded out of its first premises in Southport, Merseyside – a rented unit of 3600ft2. From the start, the business ethos was always to offer a quality product and service, complimented with a no-nonsense warranty, ensuring customer’s total peace of mind. The business model grew steadily over the ensuing five years and it continued purchasing and refurbishing used machinery for resale until 1998, when the PUWER98 regulations were

introduced. This added complexity and costs to refurbishing old machines, and along with discounted new machinery incentives, meant there was less demand overnight. The company needed to adapt and Joseph and Carl started to source and supply new machinery. Today the business is at least 90% new machine sales. Into the new millennium, the company had outgrown its premises and needed more space due to the expansion of the new machinery sales as well as new machinery agencies which had been agreed, such as Sedgewick, Casadei and Altendorf at that time. This led to the company moving into a larger unit in Banks, Lancashire on the outskirts of Southport. By 2003, the company once again needed more space and better facilities largely because around 75% of the company’s activities had switched to the supply of new machinery which was compliant to both CE and PUWER98 safety standards.

In 2003, J & C O’Meara moved again to a modern industrial premises, centrally-located with easy access to Manchester, Liverpool and Preston. The premises offer a 5000ft2 showroom with one of the largest displays of sliding table panel saws in the UK. Over the years, the company has built up a loyal and successful customer base and enjoys the benefit of repeat business from loyal customers both far and wide. In 2005, the company agreed to work with Kündig, the leading Swiss sanding machinery manufacturer, to set up a sales network and oversee its activity in the UK. The next year started with the sad news that Joseph O’Meara, Carl’s father, had passed away. In the same, year, the business parted company with one of its biggest suppliers, Altendorf – which it duly replaced with its Genisis sliding table panel saws. In 2007, the company added an additional

25 “We decided that it was time for us to invest in ourselves, our products and our brands … that spurred us on to develop the Genisis brand” 1100ft2 and in 2008 the company introduced briquetting machines to the Genisis range and showcased the products for the first time at the W8 woodworking machinery exhibition. Thanks to its loyal customers and dedicated staff, J & C O’Meara survived the 20082010 recession intact. In 2014 the company introduced the Genisis 512S edgebander, giving the small- to medium-sized manufacturer an affordable PVC/ABS machine with pre-milling and corner rounding. In 2016, J & C O’Meara took on the agency of the impressive AES Group – Turkey’s leading CNC machinery experts – and started by introducing its smallest CNC, the throughfeed Sirius drilling and routing machine. In 2017, the first AES Sirius machines came into stock – necessitating a re-organisation and refurbishment of the premises and once again, the company extended and upgraded the premises to 7500ft2. Bringing the time line up to date, in 2018 J & C O’Meara invested in a dedicated customer support vehicle, and, at the time of writing, are valiantly getting ready for the W18 Exhibition

From bandsaws to briquetters, shredders to spindle moulders and wall saws to wood burners, the Genisis range is a substantial offering – and fully supplied, warranted, serviced and maintained by J & C O’Meara. The evolution of the company’s Genisis brand dates back to the early 2000s when it parted company with two of its then main agencies:

“We decided that it was time for us to invest in ourselves, our products and our brands. That spurred us on to develop the Genisis brand – effectively a badge-engineered collection of products from suppliers that J & C O’Meara has built up a working trust with over the last 20 years. “Strangely enough, it was the products which were being manufactured all around the world with European logos stuck on them that motivated us to look into getting something sorted out that we felt our clients could trust in and rely on – thus Genisis was born. “With Genisis, our take was that from the very start it would be a clear and transparent brand,” explains Carl. “Fast forward 20 years, and everybody knows where our stock comes from, the quality is recognised and we sell and service a large number of Genisis machines which have proven themselves very well in the marketplace. Essentially, there’s nothing wrong with badge engineering, it’s just a little disappointing that some companies operating today find it difficult to be clear and up front with customers regarding its product sources. J & C O’Meara has come a long way since that first Dominion morticer, it’s clear that the business is continuing to evolve in a positive manner whilst being true to the principles established by Joseph at the company’s inception in 1990. Looking at the impressive AES Group products (which have been featured in these pages – see this month’s Woodbuzz article on page 142) I’m pretty sure Joseph would feel that the business could not be in finer fettle with the current team, led adroitly by his capable and committed son, Carl. Carl concludes: “When most people set out in business, they may have key objectives and goals, as we indeed do. But typically, as you progress, the goals tend to move further on, your expectations of where you want to be are always getting higher. Making strong connections with Intelligent Fixings Stand P505 London-based company, Intelligent Fixings has simplified furniture manufacturing by inventing the Peanut 1. This exciting innovation, designed by managing director Luke Thomson, is a self-clamping, single component solution that has been receiving unprecedented attention since its soft-launch at the Inside Biesse UK 2018 show, in July. As one impressed observer states: “I haven’t seen anything like it before!” Luke and Hazel Thomson are the owners of the London-based bespoke furniture-making and refurbishment company, Thomson Brothers (London). The Peanut 1 enables production on their CNC machine to be quick and efficient, as the connector requires just one machining

process, creates a very strong joint, can be preinserted by furniture manufacturers and then packed flat and shipped. It is very intuitive for the end user to assemble the cabinets – one tester stated: “It’s instantly obvious how it works.” Other connectors rely on a screw that inserts directly into the panel, but the Peanut 1’s main body is seated in a T-slot, which means that it pulls one panel face together with the other panel face. Fundamentally, the Peanut 1 does not rely on a screw. Intelligent Fixings was fortunate to have Biesse and tooling expert EMST’s help with the development of the Peanut 1. According to the company, all recent testing by FIRA International of ‘if’ kitchen base and wall cabinets built with the prototype Peanut 1, passed with flying colours – proving that something so easy to fit, can also be strong enough to surpass British Standards testing. There seems to be no end to Luke’s ideas for improving connections – Peanut 2, a dowel version suitable for end-milling machines, is currently in development. The Peanut 1 will be available to buy from November, in six colours. Woodwise Academy closing the skills gap Stand G600 The Woodwise Academy in Bristol is making a significant contribution to closing the skills gap in the industry by offering youngsters the opportunity to develop hand skills in woodworking and furniture. In 2008 the team at Didac, which is most widely known for its work-based training programmes delivered throughout the UK, decided to take the next step in the development of its furniture and woodworking development business model, by opening a skills academy in Bristol. Elaine Stanley, operations manager at Didac comments: “It took two years to get the project

off the ground, but in 2010 Didac opened the Woodwise Academy, located three miles to the east of Bristol city centre on the banks of the river Avon, making it a comfortable place in which to learn.” She went on to say: “Throughout our 21 years in business, Didac has always worked on a roll-on-roll-off basis, which means learners can start at any time of the year, rather than being limited to the academic year. This approach is helping us to recruit learners because we can start their training programme at a time to meet their personal needs.” Elaine works alongside Shane Stenning, workshop manager and lead instructor, ably supported by two further instructors and a workshop technician. Didac’s strengths is its ability to call on any one of its work-based trainers to deliver specialist skills training – in CNC machining, for example. Elaine continues: “We currently have six groups working in the academy. The study programme for 16-18 year olds, a bench joinery and shopfitting group of apprentices, who take day release from their employment. This programme is supported by CITB, which approached Didac in 2015 to assure

training capacity in the Bristol area. “It was in 2011 that we started our study programme for 16-18 year olds as Didac is passionate about igniting interest in school students and working with the local community in Bristol. “The course offers an alternative to sixth form or college and works with smaller groups of students interested in this industry. We also work with local hospital schools supporting those students that have the skill set but not always the confidence to approach further education easily. “Thus far, this has been a huge success and in 2017 we were able to double numbers due to the high interest and that resulted in several students being placed with local companies on apprenticeships and on progression programmes with us. “We also introduced a schools programme to work with local secondary schools and those students that are home-schooled, to assist them in returning to peer environments.” Not only is Didac helping youngsters develop practical skills, which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives, it is supporting the schools in the delivery of their wider curriculum because students often re-engage. Elaine says: “It’s been a wonderful partnership between us and the schools, which will continue to benefit many youngsters who would otherwise miss out on the opportunity.” www.didac.co.uk

Bringing innovation to manufacturing Stand A405, A510 & A610 Automaction is the new concept that supports Biesse’s participation at the W Exhibition, bringing innovation to manufacturing; based on automated, interconnected production that enables customers to obtain greater value from machines to increase efficiency, either within a specific process or in an entire factory. Visitors will see how automation can help increase Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE). The Viet Opera R robotised sanding machine automates the hand sanding operation, offering greater consistency and higher output. There will also be an unloading system utilising a collaborative robot that can also be used in many other applications. In addition, a Stream A edgebander and W4 panel return system will combine to create a semi-automated cell, demonstrating automated panel management offering increased output and reduction in damages when compared to standard edgebander cells. The Brema Vektor 15 throughfeed machine centre includes a panel return system that allows the same panel entry/exit point and can automatically process all six sides of a panel. This provides better space utilisation and means only one operator is required. Automating offloading can also help increase production capacity. The Rover K Flat Table CNC will include an offloading table and sweeping/transfer arm that ejects a processed charge of panels, allowing the operator to load new sheets in masked time. As well as increasing capacity, it also allows greater utilisation of operator’s time during the nesting process. In addition to the Twin Pusher system on the Selco WN6 beam saw that dramatically increases machine output, the embedded software tool demonstrates that automation is not always mechanical. The software guides how to sort the panels produced into stack locations, enabling

efficient handling of finished components. Integrated into all machines will be IoT Sophia, the Biesse IoT (internet of things) platform that offers an overview of machine performance, with remote diagnostics, machine stoppage analysis and potential fault prediction that helps to increase machine availability. Sophia also sends automated notifications when maintenance tasks or stoppages occur. The platform also includes Parts Sophia, an e-parts system that shows availability of parts and streamlines the quoting and ordering process. “Intelligent systems are connecting the world,” says Robbie O’Neill, UK commercial director. “This allows businesses to adapt more quickly. This adaptation is done either by physical automation or connected facilities. Why Thorpes needed a new/ upgraded dust extraction system The control of dust and the wellbeing of its employees is of utmost importance to Thorpes. With the requirement to design a purpose-built manufacturing space and a blank sheet of paper, it was important to integrate the dust control systems within the infrastructure of the building to utilise space and maximise efficiency. Why Thorpes chose Air Plants Thorpes Joinery chose to use Air Plants because of the company’s unique turn key systems and the fact that it offers a combination of extraction, collection and integration with a biomass boiler. This was important for the environmental credentials of Thorpes and in the minimisation of running costs of the new facility. It is also part of Thorpes’ ethos to facilitate the services of local suppliers and manufacturers whenever possible. Zero glue line – by hand Stand A710 & A750 FEN UK will be demonstrating the new portable HIT-M Zero glue line machine, which is perfect for applying edgebanding to both straight and shaped panels, all without requiring any adhesive application whatsoever. Thanks to the hot air injection technology, this machine can be used to apply “laser” co-extruded edging or specially pre-coated materials quickly and easily. It is a real step forward for edgebanding difficult shaped panels, but at a realistic budget.

When considering that there is no need for a glue pot at all, which due to the very low feed speed required when applying tape to shaped panels, in the past shape edgebanders have always been baking the adhesive in the machine leading to degradation of the glue line and overall finish. When used in conjunction with the very robust support table, even panels with an angle up to 55° can be edgebanded easily, without any glue line and without any hassle. The HIT-M can also be used as a portable edgebander, for example it is very handy to carry along

onsite to quickly repair panel edges perfectly. Heat up time is only 30 seconds, so the machine is always ready when needed. When equipped with

Hoffmann – ‘‘We’re found in the best joints!” Stand H910 Hoffmann Machine Co will again be demonstrating its many machines using the versatile Hoffmann double-dovetail-jointing system and its technicians will be showing visitors the many advantages of time-saving, improved joint quality, and increased production which can be achieved when using the Hoffmann Key. The combination machine, Hoffmann MS35SF with integrated chop-saw, will be of particular interest to door-set manufacturers. Developed from one of the company’s standard machines, this bespoke machine will produce completed door-architraves in series production from bar length, profiled material (either MDF or solid wood). Each architrave set is produced with square ends and mitres where appropriate and can be, when required, simultaneously routed for jointing with Hoffmann Keys. Each architrave set can be prepared in less than 1min. Hoffmann also offers an alternative method for producing the joints in door frames. Door frame joints can be simplified by mitring same profiles and joining with dowels and Hoffmann Keys. Machinery for this process (Hoffmann PP-2 NC ) and samples will be on display at the W Exhibition for customer inspection. The new generation Hoffmann bench-top machines MU-3 and

MU-3P will be demonstrated throughout the duration of the show to illustrate the simplicity of this jointing method. Vision panels, picture frames, mitred cabinet doors, stretcher frames, beaded face frames, cornices, window and door casings, jewellery boxes, hand rails, architectural work, post and beam construction, curtain walling and roof lanterns are just a few of the many applications which regularly use Hoffmann Keys to secure the joints. Numerous examples of application for the Hoffmann Keys will be displayed and demonstrated for customers’ scrutiny, advice and for additional applications. Customers wishing to evaluate a specific application can have their own profiles processed by Hoffman technicians at the exhibition. This year, the company will introduce its new Hoffmann CBM end profiling machine for processing the joints on Georgian style window bars. The machine is a bench-mounted, manually operated machine which simplifies this essential joint. New to the range of Hoffmann Keys is the W-0 Key. This delicate Key enables cabinet makers and framers to joint profiles as thin as 7mm thickness. Hoffmann is initially manufacturing them in lengths of 10mm, 22mm and 35mm and are available ex-stock. Samples and demonstrations of this tiny joint will be available for visitors to inspect and assess. The Hoffmann/Morso solution for the manufacture of beaded face-

frames will also be demonstrated. Cabinets with beaded face-frames immediately convey a high level of quality and craftsmanship. Designers and consumers have rediscovered this style and, according to Hoffmann, demand for beaded face-frames is on the rise. The Hoffmann Beaded Face Frame System offers furniture and cabinet makers of all sizes a fast, precise and efficient way to manufacture beaded face-frames,

whether it’s one or one hundred frames per job. Starting with beaded moulding, the stiles are notched and the rails are coped on fixed-blade, guillotinestyle notching machines. For a standard stile-rail connection, this operation takes about five seconds with Hoffmann’s manual notching machine (the automatic model is faster still!). A second step takes place on Hoffmann dovetail routing machines equipped with special fixtures for beaded material. Dovetail keyways are routed in all mating parts and the frames are assembled by simply applying some glue and inserting Hoffmann Dovetail Keys. No large clamping tables or bar clamps are required, the frames can be sanded and finished immediately upon assembly. At the W Exhibition Hoffmann technicians will demonstrate how beaded face-frames can be made accurately and with all the flexibility as required for bespoke cabinets. JMJ Woodworking’s extended showroom and what’s in store at the W Exhibition Stand D710 JMJ Woodworking Machinery, the well-known new and used classical machinery supplier, has just completed an extension to its existing showroom. This has allowed the company to increase the range of machines on display. Already an established SCM main dealer, JMJ Woodworking Machinery now has specific dedicated areas for panel saws, edgebanders, throughfeed sanders, spindle moulders, drills and planers, stocking the SCM Class, Formula and Nova ranges as well as Minimax machines. The company has brought into stock Houfek sanding machines which come in various forms including horizontal and vertical belt machines, oscillating bobbin sanders and through feed sanders. According to Mirka, these robust abrasives have been designed and developed by the R&D team to provide users with easy-to-use products that offer increased efficiency and productivity, a consistent high-quality finish and a dust-free environment to work in. The new abrasives on display will spearhead a wide range of complementary abrasives and tools, including Abranet Max, Abranet Ace and Abranet Ace HD ranges. Abranet Max’s innovative symmetrical net structure allows effective stock removal while minimising the risk of overheating the sanded surface area or burning the belt. Economic order and fast access in the smallest space Stand N410 Increasing and changing customer requirements are determining the workflow in the wood composite and wood processing industry, especially regarding quality, costs and time. Different materials in different dimensions, colors and weights must be stocked today to meet customer requirements and ensure fast delivery. As a manufacturer of racking and storage systems for almost 40 years, OHRA from Kerpen, Germany has specialised in the storage of wood and wood composite. The racking systems are specifically configured and can be adapted to changing requirements without time and effort. The robust cantilever racks made of solid steel profiles, in particular, are a standard in every joinery or in furniture production companies. Cantilever racking systems consist of vertical support profiles with punched holes for holding cantilever arms. These are hooked in the punched holes, in an almost horizontal position. As a result, storage levels can be achieved, which can accommodate very long and bulky goods, without disturbing intermediate supports. Particularly noteworthy is the lock of the cantilever arms in the upright profile. The arms are not bolted but secured with forged backing plates. Thanks to this patented system,

the cantilever arms remain mobile and avoid unintended bumps with the forks of the truck. Both the cantilevers and the stored goods remain undamaged. Another advantage of this system is the quick height adjustment individual storage levels. The cantilever arms can be put in and out very quickly without tools. Ohra designs each individual racking in accordance with the customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s requirements. The height of the uprights and the length of the cantilever arms are freely selectable. The use of hot rolled steel profiles for the main components requires less surface area for the construction compared to cantilever racks made of optimised sheet metal profiles â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the solid profiles also prevent hidden rust. In addition to the proven and tested cantilever racks, Ohra also offers additional storage systems. These include mezzanine floors or robust chipboard racking, where the panels can be stored vertically in compartments. Roller conveyors in front of each compartment facilitate the handling of the heavy plates. As standard, the compartments are 400mm wide, 2,200mm high and available in depths of 2,500mm, 4,000mm and 5,000mm. This system can be extended at any time. The vertical racking from Ohra are well-known in the wood and wood composite industry. They

are suitable for the storage of strips, pipes or bar stock. These racks may be set up directly at the workplace, so that the different materials are in direct access. This means a tremendous amount of time and money savings. More and more in demand are the load-bearing mezzanine floors from Ohra. With this kind of storage system, you can double the existing floor space. Depending on the height of the warehouse or the production site, several floors can be realised. Ranheat’s ceramic flue gas filtration systems Stand B410 New legislation came into force in December 2017 covering wood burning installations from 1MW up to 50MW known as the Medium Combustion Plant Directive MCPD. The new legislation sets lower limits for new installations from December 2018 and by 2025 for existing plants.The legislation sets new lower limits for NOx and particulate for medium-size combustion plants. Historically, wood combustion plants within the woodworking industry came under guidance note PG1/12 (13) but this legislation was not applicable to existing installations (plants installed pre 2013). The new regulations MCPD will apply to all installations. The new limits can only be met using ceramic flue gas filters or electrostatic precipitators. Ranheat Engineering produced its first ceramic flue gas filter in 2012 and has been installing them on all sizes of boiler since the new lower limit was made a condition of acceptance of the

Renewable Heat Incentive in 2013. The filters consist of a number of ceramic filter elements – known as candles – that are mounted in a plate and have suction applied to the centre of the tube. The particulate adheres to the outside of the elements and forms a ‘cake’ on the element. As the cake builds up so does the resistance to air flow. When this reaches a pre-set level the elements are cleaned using a rapid pulse of compressed air down the centre of the element which blows the cake away from the element which falls down and collects in a bin. Using this method particulate emissions as low as 1mg/m3 – the new limit is 50mg/ m3 – can be achieved. According to Ranheat Engineering, traditional cyclones and even multicyclones cannot achieve these limits. Essetre helps Glosford set the pace in the SIPS market

An Essetre Techno Fast features a high speed five-axis milling head

Stand H410 Essetre Srl was established in 1979 and since then is manufacturing highly specialised and high-tech CNC woodworking machinery. The company is well known for its ability to create new solutions for customers’ needs. Glosford Timber Solutions is one of the many UK-based businesses which have successfully benefited from a professional relationship with Essetre. The company is now improving again its production plant with an additional working centre bringing the total Essetre equipment and machinery at the Glosford facility to four. Glosford is a leading company designing and building SIPS for projects across the UK. With a fully-equipped factory and its own CAD design office, Glosford delivers quality, fully-engineered off site solutions for both residential and nonresidential customers. To meet the production requirement during the eight years of operation, Glosford MD Ken Jones has maintained a high level of investment in people and machinery which when combined manifests a great ability to adapt to the market and creating a winning production process. Nowadays, the company relies on its Essetre Techno One for the glulam beams pre-cutting, on a Techno PM five-axis dedicated to processing the SIPS on the most recent and dedicated Techno PM-Sips – shortly, Glosford will take delivery of a Techno Fast which will back up the Techno One which processes the

timber/glulam beams. The Techno Fast is a CNC working centre, characterised by a heavy monoblock structure with neat, reduced dimensions for a relatively compact footprint, easy transportation and installation without the need to disassemble the machine. The Techno Fast machine can process beams with a remarkable speed by a five-axis milling head featuring double exit motor: one equipped with HSK 63F tool connection allowing an automatic tool changing and one equipped with a flange connection for the blade – standard diameter of 600mm. The workable beam section is 250 x 620mm. This machine will be used to process the glulam beam structures to support the roof and all the internal lintels to sustain the external structural walls and roof in 142mm or 172mm Kingspan TEK (SIPS). Some steel might be required to help transfer roof loads or upper wall loads where a more contemporary open plan design is requested. Demystifying asset finance for the furniture and joinery sector Stand C410 With its reliance on machinery for production, the furniture and joinery sector is perfectly positioned to take advantage of asset finance to fund the tools it needs. If you haven’t heard of it before or don’t know how it works, here’s all you need to know. What is asset finance? Asset finance is an alternative form of funding used by businesses to obtain the equipment they need to grow. In effect, it utilises the residual value in an asset to either pay for or put down a deposit on another piece of kit. It usually involves paying a regular charge for use of the asset over an agreed period of time, avoiding the full cost of buying outright. Common examples of asset finance products are: • Refinancing: The finance company purchases the asset and finances it back to you.

Repayments are calculated in line with the income stream that will be generated by the asset; at the end of the refinance term, you own the asset • Hire purchase (HP) allows the customer to buy the equipment on credit. The finance company purchases the asset on behalf of the customer and owns the asset until the final instalment is paid, at

which point the customer is given the option to buy it • Finance lease: The full value of the equipment is repaid to the finance company, plus interest, over the lease period. At the end of the term, the company can choose to continue to use the asset by entering a secondary rental period, sell the asset and keep a portion of the income from the sale, or

return it. • Operating lease: An operating lease may be more appropriate if a company does not need the equipment for its entire working life. The leasing company may retain responsibility for maintenance and is likely to take the equipment back at the end of the lease period Types of assets financed The beauty of asset finance is its flexibility – it can be used to fund any asset, from spindle moulders and jointing machine sets to band saws and routers. It makes the otherwise unaffordable affordable because it gives businesses access to the equipment they need without incurring the cash flow disadvantage of an outright purchase. Reactive stains – full of surprises

Dear reader, Are you proud of what your company does? What are the highlights that keep you motivated day in, day out? It’s worth taking some time to think about it.

Colours can appear on oak due to the effects of tannic acid. They’re a curse for some, but a blessing for others. Tannic acid is generally seen as something to be avoided. This substance is frequently responsible for unwanted discolouration of stained and lacquered wood. However, we can turn this characteristic of tannic acid into an advantage by treating the wood with Hesse reactive stains.

Of course I am proud of what happens in our company every day. But what exactly is it that we can all be proud of at Hesse-Lignal? When Hesse reactive stains are applied, the stain reacts with the tannic acid, which causes colours to appear on the stained wood. The colours are produced in the cell walls of the oak, producing a very intense colour on the wood. The colour tone which is finally produced depends on the amount of tannic acid present in the wood. As every tree contains a different amount of tannic acid, staining the wood with reactive stain produces a unique colour tone, which can differ from one piece of wood to the next.

Campe, one of Hesse Benelux’s dealers, was inspired by the attractive range of colours, and took up the challenge. This is how this magnificent flooring came to boast such natural and varied colour tones. The parquet manufacturer was particularly struck by how easy it was to work with Hesse reactive stain. Despite the fact that it was being used to cover relatively large surfaces, the stain could be applied and used immediately without the need for any preparation. Hesse has put together a range of colours for you to choose from. These stains are not part of the Stain Mixing System (SMS), because the final colour tones can only be controlled to a limited extent. The colour range we have put together will give you an idea of what to expect, but the final colour tone depends on the amount of tannic acid in the wood. The stains have been given some apt names, including Ginger, Swamp and Black Olive.

How can I make sure the mix is just right?

Mixing ratios given by volume or by weight. Added thinner and other additives. Learning from daily practical experience or long, nerve-shredding calculations? Here is a brief description of the procedure for mixing Hesse 2-part lacquers. Before the lacquer can be used, the two parts, the lacquer and the appropriate hardener, must be mixed together. This should be done in accordance with the mixing ratio given on the lacquerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s label or in the technical details. But what does a mixing ratio (by volume) of 10 : 1 actually mean? For a mixing ratio of 10 : 1, you need one part hardener for 10 parts lacquer. As the mixing ratio here is given by volume, the component parts have to be measured according to volume too (i.e. in litres). Obviously, a suitable measuring container will come in useful. If you want to harden 5 litres of our HYDRO-PUR MATO water-based lacquer, you will need 0.5 litres of hardener.

But what if your Hesse product is very dense, and is sold in kilograms rather than litres? You can still use a suitable measuring container to measure out the correct volumes of lacquer and hardener. Alternatively, mixing ratios can also be stated gravimetrically, or in terms of weight. Accordingly, for 7kg of FANTASTIC-FILL lacquer with a mixing ratio (by weight) of 100: 7, you will need to weigh out and mix 0.49 kilograms of hardener. This equates to 7 parts hardener for every 100 parts lacquer. Once the hardener has been added, the lacquer has to be stirred well. The hardener has to be stirred in especially thoroughly when using our 2K water-based lacquers, because the solvents in the hardener cause

the 2K HYDRO lacquers to thicken. Only once you have done that can you adjust the viscosity of the final product. A range of thinners are available depending on the lacquer and how it is being used. For 2K HYDRO lacquers, which can be diluted with water, water or optimiser is used. For other products specialist thinners are used with various different characteristics. The maximum amount of thinner which can be added (state as a percentage) depends on the lacquer/hardener mixture used. This limit should be observed carefully, especially when using water-based lacquers. For example, adding 5% water to a HYDRO-PUR lacquer/hardener mixture of 5.5 litres would mean adding a maximum of 0.275 litres of water. The quantity of Hesse aids and additives to be used, such as our ring-proofing additive, can be stated as a maximum percentage or in terms of a mixing ratio. What are these stated quantities of additives actually based on? As a rule, the amount of aids and additives which can be used is determined before the lacquer is hardened and is based on the pure, standard lacquer.

Using Hesse HYDRO-PUR MATO for real In the last issue of lacktuell we introduced our new HYDRO-PUR MATO HDU 54200. The dull matt surface stands out thanks to its added soft-feel effect. HYDRO-PUR MATO also boasts high chemical and outstanding mechanical resistance.

But the key feature of this range of materials is its ‘self-healing’ properties. Should a minor scratch or soiling appear despite the highly-resistant surface, simply wipe it with a damp cloth, then gently wipe it dry - job done! Any marks or minor damage will have disappeared. A single spray application on a real wood surface with a clear base coat or a surface with a coloured lacquer base coat is sufficient. Then allow it to dry at room temperature. The original colour tone of the substrate will be largely retained when HYDRO-PUR MATO is used as a top coat on coloured surfaces, despite the dull matt gloss and the outstanding surface properties. For the fifth time, raumPROBE, based in Stuttgart’s Feuerbach district, has recognised outstanding innovation in the industry at its materialPREIS awards ceremony. The judge’s task was to identify the best of the best across seven different categories and from a total of 118 entries. Hesse was declared the winner of the Collection category. For more than 13 years, raumPROBE has been acting as a service provider, agent and adviser for materials used in architecture, interiors and design. In their showroom, home to Europe’s largest materials database, designers can get their hands on 50,000 materials as they plan and research their latest ideas. The materialPREIS is awarded every year for outstanding materials. Winners include manufacturers, young designers, renowned architects and design offices. The judging panel was made up of 6 specialists representing design, architecture, industry associations specialist institutes. Winners were chosen in the following categories: Design, Collection, Ecology, Innovation, Procedure, Study and Classic. Hesse entered the competition in the ‘Collection’ category with its new pattern

samples and CREATIVE METALLIC colour range. We submitted our new Metallic range. It includes 112 classic metallic colour tones, but incorporates some more unusual ones too. These colour tones are lacquered onto membranes. This has the advantage that the front of the membrane shows the original gloss of the lacquer, whereas the rear features the sheen of a high gloss or reverse glass coating. Hesse CREATIVE-METALLIC is formulated as a 2-component, polyurethane-based lacquer material, which is suitable for wood, glass and plastics depending on the type of hardener used. Most polyurethanebased finishing and brilliant lacquers can be used for the top coat. Hesse CREATIVE-METALLIC is also available as part of a mixing system. The full range of colour tones can be mixed using five base lacquers and ten pigments.

45 Years of British Yachting Expertise

Redwood Innovations had been supplying Oyster Yachts with glue for almost a decade when they approached Redwood for interior coatings for their yachts. As a supplier of Hesse Lignal fully tested and IMO certified lacquers both Redwood and Hesse Lignal were confident they had the right products to meet Oysters needs. Richard Albon of Redwood Innovations said: “Redwood has always strived to improve the working environment and efficiencies of our customers so when Oyster approached us for coatings solutions for their yachts interiors we had no hesitation in supplying Hesse IMO certified coatings.” Oyster Yachts was looking for coatings that met stringent marine regulations but in turn were aesthetically right for their clients. In particular they had an issue with the colour of their oak changing over time and wanted something that would keep this look. Using their state of the art facilities, Hesse used climate chambers to assess the effect of UV on the varying substrates. This analysis provided them with their basis for recommending their DG 4717-0005 as a base coat ideal for closed-pore substrates with additional light fast properties. The DE 4259x clear two component multicoat acrylic PU lacquer was successful in trials for the required top coat finish. This high spec did not mean compromising on finish – the lacquer is resilient, achieves impressive results and is universally applicable.
