Comment Back to the future is quite the theme for us at the moment having launched our Connect project, a combination of an online and printed directory, at the same time as we’ve reached 300 issues of Furniture & Joinery Production. With fortuitous happenstance, this all comes neatly together at the industry’s top trade event, the W Exhibition and Elements. We duly invite our loyal readers, advertisers and industry colleagues to visit stand J600 during the show to enjoy our customary hospitality, meet the team and discover how the magazine, together with Connect – plus our other marketing assets – can help your business discover new opportunities and customers.
Stand-out features this issue are two profiles saluting the respective journeys of machinery and equipment suppliers with 25- and 40-year pedigrees. Both businesses, from different roots, have established themselves with British furniture and joinery manufacturers to become widely-respected operators, each with their own strengths and styles. I should also mention an heroic installation this month, focused on Wetherby-based firm, Event Prop Hire. Gallito, part of the DCS Group, recently installed a finishing department solution there, and the article can only be described as out of this world … Do enjoy the read – and if you’re at the show, do come and meet us on stand J600.

UK exports up, Chinese imports down, says BFM UK exporters improved sales but showed an increasing reliance on EU deals during the first six months of 2018 according to the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) review of furniture overseas trade. It also showed a decline in Chinese imports across all furniture sectors. Traditional furniture sectors (as opposed to the all-furniture category which includes products such as motor and aeroplane seats) showed exports up in all sectors to EU countries, with the only declines seen in countries outside of the EU. For all countries, export sales rose as follows: upholstered seats (7.4%); non-upholstered seats (6.7%); kitchens (6.3%); wooden bedroom furniture (40.5%); wooden dining and living room furniture
(6.8%); office and shop furniture (4.9%) and mattresses (32.4%). The Republic of Ireland regained top spot from France as the major EU recipient of all types of UK furniture and for all sectors. It received £157m of imports, up by over 12% on the same six month period in 2017. £121m was exported to France (-27%) and £103m to Germany (+15.9%). The USA, however, remains the major destination for UK companies with exports to the value of £285 million, down by 19.1% compared to 2017. The second major non-EU recipient of UK furniture is China and here exports fell by 31.8% to £58m, although for upholstered seats, exports rose by 171% to near £950m. When it comes to imports,
China continues to dominate the all-furniture category in all sectors, reaching a value of over £1b between January and June 2018 – but that was down by over 7% on the same period last year. In fact, in every furniture sector, China saw import values fall: upholstered seats (-16.3%); non-upholstered seats (-4.6%); kitchens (-31%); wooden bedroom furniture (-13.1%); wooden dining and living room furniture (-7.1%); office and shop furniture (-3.2%) and mattresses (-1.6%). Imports of all furniture to the UK hardly changed in the first six months of 2018 compared with the same period in 2017, with imports from the EU increasing and imports from outside of the EU falling. There were some notable falls in import values in some sectors such
as upholstered seats (-6%); nonupholstered seats (-7.8%); kitchens (-8.3%) and wooden bedroom furniture (-7.4%). The sector that saw the largest percentage rise in imports was wooden dining and living room furniture (16.4%), followed by office and shop furniture (13.5%) and mattresses (8.3%). Of the top three EU furniture importers to the UK, Poland saw the biggest increase in values sold; up by over 8%. Italy remains at the top with Germany third. All three countries imported over £300m-worth of furniture in the first half of this year. The USA remains the second largest importer to the UK, outside of the EU, seeing its share of the market increase by 15% to £167m. www.bfm.org.uk

BFC welcomes launch of export strategy The British Furniture Confederation (BFC) has welcomed the publication of the Government’s export strategy, with an expressed hope that its words will be met with effective action. Jonathan Hindle, chairman of the BFC says: “I welcome the strategic approach that has been set out by the Department in the Export Strategy. The concerns identified are the same ones that the BFC has found again and again, and so I hope this strategy marks a stepchange in providing solutions. The BFC supports the ambition to make exports 35% of GDP – while it’s always a risk for Government to put a number on targets, it hopefully means that action will be taken to meet it.” International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox MP launched the Government’s Export Strategy in
August, setting out how it will boost UK exports through better use of its overseas network, new online tools and building an extensive business to business network. The strategy states that last year £620b of goods and services exported by British companies accounted for 30% of the UK’s GDP, representing a record high. However, the Department for International Trade estimates that 400,000 businesses believe they could export but do not. Dr Fox set out the Government’s long-term ambition to go further and increase total exports as a proportion of GDP to 35%. The key elements of the strategy to support companies selling overseas are to: • encourage and inspire more businesses to export • inform businesses by providing information, advice and practical

assistance on exporting • connect UK businesses to overseas buyers, markets and each other • ensure that businesses take full advantage of the £50b-worth of export finance and insurance support from UK Export Finance It is encouraging that the Export Strategy acknowledges the past success of the Trade Access Programme (TAP), which provides grant funding for eligible businesses towards the costs of exhibiting at overseas trade shows, and is looking to build on this success. “The Government is rightly placing itself at the heart of the solution by highlighting the work it needs to do to encourage more businesses to export, to provide more practical advice, and to provide the financial assurances
which can make or break a deal,” says Jonathan. “As an industry, we’re very interested to learn more about how exemplar companies can join the network of Export Champions to share best practice – a crucial step in supporting SMEs into the export market.” Jonathan continues: “We must keep on reminding the Government of the importance of the furniture and furnishings industry to the economy. At nearly £17b and rising, it’s a substantial growth industry for the UK, supporting over 327,000 jobs across 50,000 registered companies. “Manufacturing of furniture and beds in Britain is one of the top three divisions driving manufacturing growth in the UK, with an output of over £11b, emanating from 8390 companies and employing 118,000 individuals.”

Lebus Upholstery becomes first independent manufacturer to gain Certified Company status under fire compliance scheme The Furniture Industry Research Association has confirmed Lebus Upholstery as the latest company and first independent manufacturer to gain Certified status under its Compliance Scheme for the Fire Performance of Upholstered Furniture. Lincolnshire-based Lebus Upholstery, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of sofas, suites and corner units, passed a comprehensive audit to become a Certified Company under the scheme.
The audit demonstrated that Lebus Upholstery has robust processes and procedures in place to demonstrate due diligence compliance with the UK’s Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations (FFFSR). This included checking its process management systems, control of materials, traceability, compliance testing,

Speaking on its new Certified Company status, John Brewster, operations director at Lebus Upholstery says: “At Lebus we’ve always placed a very strong emphasis on safety, and through our Certified Company status we’re able to demonstrate this further through this independent verification. Retailers will be reassured that our processes and procedures relating to flammability are vigorous, which in the long-term benefits their consumers. “The audit itself was very thorough and it gave the opportunity for many colleagues from across the business to work together with the aim of satisfying all the elements which we had to display. It also gave us the opportunity to be confident that we are meeting the requirements of the FFFSR.” Full details on the FIRA’s Compliance Scheme for the Fire Performance of Upholstered Furniture are available from www.fira.co.uk/ compliance.

Forty years’ service in the woodworking industry I
n May of this year, Neville M Oldham Woodworking Machinery celebrated its 40th anniversary. The company – more recently referred to as NMO – has a well-respected reputation for supplying new, used and re-conditioned woodworking machinery.
The company was established in 1978 by Neville Oldham, who had enjoyed many years of success in the woodworking industry since starting in 1959 at Multico Woodworking Machinery, selling its machinery all over the North of England and Scotland. Neville, who has now been retired for nearly 20 years, is enjoying his retirement. He plays
golf on a regular basis and spends a lot of time gardening – for himself and his neighbours. He is still actively involved in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and in service in the community. It was through joining the church in 1959 that he was offered the job at Multico, working with his close friends, Ken Poole and Neil McEwen.
Gareth Tomlinson, Neville’s son-in-law, joined NMO in 1985 – this year celebrating 33 years in the woodworking industry – and left in 1997 to work for one of the largest woodworking machinery suppliers in the UK as sales manager. He took on various roles, with responsibility for UK direct sales, UK agency sales, and also export sales manager. Gareth returned to take over NMO in 2003. One of the first calls made was to the organisers of the international woodworking show at Birmingham – what is now the W Exhibition. A stand was booked for NMO show in the following year where they exhibited a large range of both new and used woodworking machinery. The show has played a big part in the development of NMO. Also, for the last 14 years, Neville Oldham has had continued success exhibiting at the North of England Woodworking & Power Tool Show at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate. As a supplier of new and used machines, the majority of the machines the company sells are used. Its warehouse in Cleckheaton stocks around 90 machines as well as accessories and tooling. All its stock is listed, with pictures, on its website: www.n-m-o.com. It has also established good links, over our many years of service, and work closely with a number of other UK and European suppliers of new and used woodworking machinery. As well as UK sales, Neville Oldham has enjoyed much success in supplying machinery to the overseas markets. It currently supplies used machinery, on a regular basis, to its agent

Biashara Master Sawmills in Kenya as well as exporting machinery to other African countries, all over Europe, the USA and Canada, Asia and the Middle East. NMO’s current project is for the well-known furniture manufacturer, Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen in Kilburn, North Yorkshire. NMO is re-building a 20in rip saw and 18in crosscut, as well as supplying an Inventair extraction unit to Thompson’s. “We thank all our customers of the last 40 years and look forward to continuing to serve in both the joinery and panel industries for many years to come,” concludes Gareth Tomlinson. 07709 131249 gareth@n-m-o.com www.n-m-o.com

Built to last – still going strong after 25 years I
t’s 25 years since Biesse UK was founded and throughout the last quarter of a century, Steve Bulmer has remained a constant presence at the machinery manufacturer’s Daventry headquarters. Helping to establish the firm when it was set up in 1993 as a UK subsidiary of the Italian Biesse Group, Steve began as sales manager then became sales director, before taking up the position of managing director in 2009, a post he still holds today.
Steve’s trajectory could be said to have mirrored the fortunes of the company itself; starting with just three employees, it doubled its turnover in the first two years and now Biesse UK boasts a turnover of £30m+ and employs 100 members of staff. As Biesse UK celebrates its milestone anniversary, Steve reveals the ‘four Ps’ that have helped him to sustain a successful business – people, products, partnerships and progress.
PEOPLE POWER Behind every successful business is a team of great people and Biesse UK is no exception. As well as Steve, another of the original three employees is still at the heart of the firm; John Adamson is now the service manager for the glass and stone division. This commitment and
Pages FINAL.indd 16
loyalty is not unusual within Biesse. Despite its global reach – the Italian parent company has 40 subsidiaries – at its heart, it’s still a family firm and operates with a ‘one team’ mentality. “We describe ourselves as ‘glocal’ – a global company operating at a local level,” explains Steve. But like many manufacturing firms, retaining and recruiting good talent can be a struggle. “The biggest challenge facing the engineering industry today is the skills shortage,” acknowledges Steve. “Technician skills are in particularly high demand, not least because technology is moving at such a rapid pace – it’s now less about mechanical competence and more about software and electronics. To fill the gap, we recruit a regular stream of junior technicians, providing them with ongoing in-
house training to enhance their skills.” Developing a team is something that Steve feels passionately about. “The thing of which I’m most proud during my 25 years at Biesse is seeing the team around me grow,” he states. “The value of our company lies not in the bricks and mortar, but in our staff. People matter.”
PREMIUM PRODUCTS While good people are crucial, a good offering has also been central to Biesse’s success. The company’s product range has stood the test of time because it delivers what customers need – high quality, reliable and flexible machinery at a competitive price point. “Machinery is an expensive investment so equipment that can adapt according to demand is really important,”
24/09/2018 12:01
The team at Biesse UK, Daventry
says Steve. “Whether the client is a nationwide manufacturer or a regional SME, it’s essential that they can offer their customers the latest industry trends, and these can change frequently.” Like people, machinery is an investment but Steve has noticed that Biesse’s clients are now less concerned with initial purchase price and are more aware of total cost of ownership. “Today’s customers understand the importance of efficiency and capability,” he reveals. “The overall quality/cost/performance ratio is now key. Our machines offer fantastic value for money – they’re high quality, well equipped, offer the latest technology and are built to last.” This is no empty statement: hundreds of Biesse’s machines are still in operation in the UK more than 20 years after they were first installed. In fact, the company is so certain of the reliability of its machines that in 2011 it introduced an industry first – its Total Care five-year warranty and maintenance programme, which comes as standard on all core products. “We’re still the only company in our sector to offer this,” says Steve. “It sets us apart from our competitors and provides our customers with a clear cost of ownership.”
PERFECT PARTNERSHIPS Prioritising customers’ needs has clearly paid dividends. Biesse UK is rightly proud of the fact that four of its original clients are still with them today and Steve believes these partnerships have reaped mutual benefits. “Decorative Panels, The Richmond Cabinet Company, BA Components and Rixonway Kitchens have all been with us from the beginning,” he reveals. “They’re now major industry influencers but in the early days they were small firms, just like us. likewise, their custom has been instrumental in our success.” “Over the last 25 years, our DNA has remained the same; from day one, our focus has been on building relationships, not just selling machines,” Steve adds. “It’s a small industry and word travels fast. Despite the investment required to purchase a machine, we’ve received continuous repeat business – as companies have evolved, moved into new sectors, increased their output and diversified to meet changing consumer demands, they’ve required new solutions. Being considered a consultative supplier, we find customers continually request advice and support that they may not find elsewhere.”
PRIORITISING PROGRESS In fact, as their customers’ demands have altered, Biesse UK has not just followed suit but has in fact helped drive industry change. “The Biesse Group is known for innovation; over 300 people are involved in our R&D activities and customers often visit our UK Technical Centre in Daventry for trials and testing of the latest technology,” says Steve. “The fact that our parent company is Italian is also a benefit for our customers. Italian kitchen and home design is a few years in front of the UK, which means that we’re ahead of the curve domestically in terms of upcoming design trends and manufacturing methods. Over the 25 years, these insights have made an impact on the industry thanks to early adopters.” Biesse’s product range has expanded significantly in recent years. Although originally a manufacturer of Rover machining centres, Techno drilling machines and Selco beam saws that are still synonymous with Biesse today, the portfolio now includes innovations such as: Skipper, the first machine to offer simultaneous
machining and drilling of two panels; a twin pusher solution available on the current range of Selco saws which delivers payback within just one year; Viet Opera R, a robotised sanding machine; and Nextstep, a flexible cutting centre which offers ‘batch one’ just in time production. No discussion around progress would be complete without mention of the 4th Industrial Revolution, however. The digital revolution has been the biggest change to happen in manufacturing during Biesse UK’s lifetime but the company has kept pace. “Our IoT platform Sophia connects us to our customer’s machines 24/7 so we can proactively monitor their condition, check component parts, and take preventative action as necessary to minimise downtime and faults,” explains Steve. “It also allows customers to monitor OEE and machine performance from their smartphone or tablet, and receive an alert if anything unexpected occurs. It includes an e-parts online portal too, and we’re continually expanding its functionality. We’re only at the start of the digital journey but technology is already making things easier for our customers.”
PROMISING PLANS So, what do the coming years hold for Biesse UK? “Brexit may bring some challenges, but overall, I feel the market will remain buoyant,” states Steve. “Following our acquisition of boutique advanced material machine manufacturer Uniteam, we’ve industrialised their product range and now have a great offering for composite materials, such as carbon fibres and resin – this has the potential to be an even bigger market for us than wood. Our next ambitious UK business plan is well underway and we’re targeting further growth.” www.biesse.com

18 Installation The staircase is the heart of any property – that’s what Paul Elkin of Excel Stairs will tell you. He should know – he’s been designing and building them for 40 years.
Excel Stairs delivers dreams using Staircon Excel Stairs is a traditional family business that has pushed its way to the forefront of digital design, and the top step of the luxury staircase market. Today it can create almost unlimited designs, turn artistic concepts into perfect and practical staircase geometry, and help exacting clients to interact with their evolving designs in 3D. Staircon from Elecosoft helps it deliver at every stage of the process from design through to production. From some of the biggest and most complex staircases in the world, right down to the plain old straight domestic flight, Excel Stairs can and does produce it all. The company is increasingly known, however, for its designs for the high-end, luxury – and often celebrity – market. One reason it has been so successful at penetrating this lucrative niche is the fact that its design and production processes are supported by Staircon, augmenting the core skills of trained craftspeople. When it comes to staircases, Paul and his team help make their clients’ dreams come true. “There’s nothing we cannot do!” he says. Staircon not only helps the delivery but also supports engagement with the client, right through the process. Paul explains: “With the aid of Staircon, we’ll make an outline presentation to catch initial interest. Then the client may come in or go online to interact with the design process. We allow them to make changes, and they can see a fairly accurate visualisation of what we’re proposing. Staircon enables them to get involved in their project and shows them a model that is truly realistic.” He believes that the software helps clients to feel that their ideas are achievable, saying: “Clients find it an awesome challenge to design a staircase, and getting hands-on helps make them feel relaxed that I have the solution to their problem.” www.elecosoft.com

20 Installation Advanced Machinery Services has installed two High Speed Production lines for Murdock Builders Merchants in Newry, Northern Ireland. This project has been the biggest-ever that AMS has installed and has been a big improvement for the company.
AMS installs its biggest project ever for Murdock Builders Merchants in Northern Ireland
Murdock Builders Merchants is currently recognised as a leading supplier of building materials and timber in the Irish marketplace. It was originally established in 1982, and today has 14 builders’ merchants branches plus two timber sites in Ireland. Last year, Murdock’s Newry branch was looking for a reliable supplier for its new machinery. It needed another high speed production line in its company. During that search, the company suffered a fire, and after that needed not one, but two huge installations – and it needed to be started urgently. Paul says: “After our fire, we were looking for a redesigned and changed set-up. When we contacted AMS, their team helped us quickly and professionally, no matter what
Pages FINAL.indd 20
the problem or question.” The two huge seven-head heavy duty moulders – running up to
120m per minute supported by a complete turnkey handline operation – was installed by AMS
engineers over Christmas 2017 and into the early part of 2018. Paul says: “I have had a very good working relationship with the AMS directors for 17 years and we knew that they were a reliable company, just what we needed in that moment. “Another key factor in choosing AMS was their partnership with the handling company. AMS works very well with this company and were taking care of sourcing and contracting of the handling. I didn’t have to deal with two companies – AMS handled everything for me.” This is a huge milestone in the short history of AMS, a service company that can provide high speed production lines as well as a wide range of other products and services to companies in the UK and overseas. www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

Homag’s quality, reliability and service win the day for Thomas Johnstone Thomas Johnstone Ltd is a renowned specialist fit-out contractor with an annual turnover in 2017 of £47m. Established in 1868, the company has earned a reputation for delivering high quality, cost-efficient projects on both a tendered and negotiated basis. It moved into its current head office in Inchinnan Business Park near Glasgow Airport in 1994. The 30,000ft2 manufacturing facility is part of the head office complex and it has recently been modernised with new Homag machinery to bring it into the 21st century. Thomas Johnstone’s manufacturing manager, Michael Hillman, explains how the changes came about: “We realised that the business was starting to lag behind the UK market with regards to technology – we were doing a lot of work by hand which was time consuming and inconsistent. “Initially, we were only looking for a new beam saw as the one we had was 35 years old. When it broke down, we were struggling to get parts for it so we knew it was ready for replacement. At the same time, however, we were experiencing increasing levels of unreliability with our edge bander, so we decided to bite the bullet and replace that too. “Later in the evaluation process, Homag suggested we consider a BHX 050 drilling machine as it could make a significant impact to automating our production process. So we added the BHX to our wish list too.” An unusual machine evaluation process “Rather than the board of directors specifying a budget for the acquisition of new equipment, our Manufacturing Director, Billy Hynes, tasked Bespoke reception produced by Thomas Johnstone at the Principal Hotel, Edinburgh
The Homag BHX 050 with woodCAD|CAM software reduces hand labour and improves efficiencies
an estimator of ours, who used to be a machine operator, and the machine shop supervisor to go and find the right machinery that would enhance our business and bring it into the 21st century. “These two employees went to the Ligna show in Germany to look at the different brands who could supply the machines we were looking for. They also visited various companies in Scotland and the north of England who were operating similar machines. “Once they had also visited different suppliers including Homag, I became involved in the buying process. It was my job to pull together all the information and costs and present them in a written proposal for our board of directors. “Homag was our preferred choice, because we felt they offered the best overall solution, but they weren’t the cheapest, so I have to say we were very nervous about making the recommendation to the board.
“After careful consideration, the board concurred with our evaluation and approved the Homag proposal. They saw the lifetime value of opting for Homag and they liked the complete package that Homag offered which included the warranty, training and commissioning so they knew there were no hidden extras. “The key factors that led us to choose Homag were driven by the initial evaluation team. They felt that the Homag build quality was second to none; some of the alternative brands were a bit ‘plastic‘. They just didn’t look or perform like industrial machines, whereas Homag’s are solid cast metal machines that are robust and extremely reliable. “Secondly, the service from Homag was excellent – they always came back to questions we asked with considered answers that clearly demonstrated they understood our business. Our previous experience of Homag gave us added confidence too. We have had a Homag BOF CNC which is over ten years old now and has never really let us down.” A close working partnership with Homag “John McKay, Homag’s man on the ground in Scotland has always been extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He guided us through the process and arranged for us to see similar machines in action at various companies. “He also encouraged us to talk to Homag customers who had already invested in these machines. Interestingly, whilst doing this we were getting poor feedback regarding other brands, so this added to the belief that Homag was the company to trust. “The specifying of the machines was done in conjunction with Homag who were able to

recommend various options that suited our production process. What was impressive is that they never tried to push any features or extras on us that we didn’t need or want. We never felt we were being forced into a corner; they understood our business and that really stood out. “The final package we agreed with Homag included an HPP 300 beam saw, and KDF 650 edge bander and the BHX 050 CNC drilling machine. We also decided to go down the barcode route and purchased the woodCAD|CAM software once we had the machines installed and running.” Transforming our production facility “The HPP 300 beam saw is a great machine. We’re cutting a lot faster and more accurately with it. We’ve got a better optimiser, a grooving package which we didn’t have previously and the saw blade projection is higher at 80 mm, so we can cut up to four or five boards at a time. “The difference with the new Homag KDF 650 edge bander is night and day. It actually runs slower than our previous edge bander, but it saves us time which sounds contradictory, but the difference is in the finish quality. “With the old machine when the parts emerged from the edge bander we had to do a huge amount of hand finishing which was time consuming and costly. When the workpieces come off the Homag machine they are perfectly finished. The machine has corner rounding and surface scraping which means the parts are all ready for the next stage of production without any hand finishing. “With our old edge bander machine set-up was slow. You had to get into the back of the
Pages FINAL.indd 23
machine with a spanner and a hammer to reset elements, moving the heights up and down or moving the glue gauge. With the Homag KDF 650, however, it’s all automatic; you use the touch screen to tell the machine what you want and it does it all for you so you’re good to go at the touch of a button. “The Homag BHX 050 is an extremely clever machine at a very attractive price point. Not only does it enable us to process so much more than we could by hand, but also it can do it a lot quicker and more reliably. “These three machines link with the existing Homag BOF CNC to give us an extremely flexible manufacturing facility. The new machines use the same touch screen operating system which makes it very easy for the operators. Also, because everything is pre-programmed, we can use less skilled machine operators. There is very little programming done on the machine itself, it’s all automated which speeds up the process and eliminates human error. “The addition of the woodCAD|CAM software has helped our drawing department become more efficient. Previously, we would spend a day doing an Autocad drawing, a day creating a cutting list and then a day using Alphacam to programme the CNCs. With the new software this is condensed into one day. Whilst you are doing the drawing, woodCAD|CAM works in the background preparing the cutting list and creating the programmes for the CNCs; there’s no human programming, it’s all done automatically. “The software also enables us to optimise and cut panels on the saw, then print off a barcode label for every workpiece. Each label holds all
the information for that individual panel in terms of which machine it is to go to next and what has to be done to on a machine by machine basis. Then, when it arrives in the assembly area, the joiners know which panels are required to construct each piece of furniture. Not only does this barcode system reduce material waste, but it also eliminates human error.” A bright future “These days whilst bespoke products remain very important to our business model, it is also necessary to have a cost-effective mass production capability. The market is looking for more commercial solutions, and with the new machinery and software we can still create the bespoke hotel reception area, but we can also manufacture all the identical furniture for 190 rooms, for example. Also, with the mass production work we can now send furniture out flat-pack which is a huge advantage, saving space, time and money in both production and transport costs. “We’re delighted with the Homag equipment; it has performed better than we expected. With the beam saw things like blade changes are a lot quicker and the quality of the cuts is outstanding. The performance of the edge bander has eliminated the need for manual finishing and the BHX has removed the need to drill holes on a bench or by hand,” concludes Michael Hillman. Felder quality shines through for furniture school Peter Sefton runs the Peter Sefton Furniture School, which offers a wide range of woodworking and furniture-making courses. The main course is 35 weeks long and covers hand skills, machining and a lot more, it also offers specialist short courses and three-day machining courses on using bandsaws, planer thicknessers, table saws and spindle moulders, all carried out on a range of machinery from the Felder Group. For the last 15 years Peter has been using machines from the Felder Group and is still using three of his original machines today. When he first started the school Peter purchased an A3-41 planer thicknesser, an N4400 bandsaw, an F3 spindle moulder and a K3 panel saw from Felder’s Hammer range. Since then he has added two AF 22 dust extraction units, upgraded his K3 to a K700 Professional as well as adding a second planer – the A 741 from the Felder range. Commenting on why he chose machines form Felder, Peter says: “I had known of Felder for over 20 years and it’s great to see how they have progressed. I went to the headquarters in Milton Keynes and it gives you a great confidence seeing their set up, and the range is safe which is essential when running a school.” Speaking about his machines, Peter says: “The N4400 bandsaw is essential; it has so many uses. We swap the blade two or three times a day: a little narrow blade for
Pages FINAL.indd 24
tight curved work, a wider blade for ripping, a medium blade for making tenons and dovetails. “As the school became more popular, a queue for the A3-41 started to develop so I decided to add another planer, taking the step up to the Felder A 741.” “The quick-change knives on both the planers are easy to set up; I can teach someone in 15 minutes and be confident that they could go back to their own workshop and set it up.” Regarding his panel saw, Peter says: “The Hammer K3 did well and I had that for 12 years but we were ready for an upgrade. The bigger and more robust Felder K 700 has allowed us to do such accurate work – fine cutting for inlays/veneers and a selection of different tasks that I can show the students, but most importantly is the increased safety.” Peter then went on to say: “I wouldn’t have a workshop without a spindle moulder. In the past, they have had a reputation for being dangerous but the technology has improved so much and now it is much safer – as long as it is set up correctly – and you can do some really nice work.” Peter now makes DVDs and digital downloads on each of the machines to spread his knowledge and experience and to keep people up-to-date with the safety regulations. 01908 635000 www.felder-group.co.uk

The route to manufacturing success, a relationship spanning 40 years What is the mantra that is always drummed into every business person, especially those involved in capital equipment sales? It’s all about the relationship and long-term relationships are the key to building future business. It’s a massive influencing factor in winning new customers as well as keeping existing customers. When that association extends to more than 25 years, it transcends the usual person-toperson relationship and becomes a companyto-company alliance based on mutual trust and values. Gary Tootell, managing director of Richmond Cabinets reflects those principles in his own business. “We bought our first Biesse machine in the mid 1970s. It was a second-hand drilling machine and we ran it for over 30 years. Biesse were renowned for drilling machines and as they grew, we grew with them.” Since those early days Richmond has bought several Biesse solutions, including one of the first Insider drilling and assembly lines to be installed in the UK. By way of background, the Richmond Cabinet Company is an established, privately-owned family business renowned for the quality of its superior kitchens. Since its establishment in 1987, with roots dating back to the mid 1940s, Richmond has grown a solid reputation as a provider to the specific needs of the contract kitchen market, supplying specialist ranges for the public housing sector, private developer market and trade merchants. Richmond also produces a Studio Living Accommodation range of products designed to provide functional and durable living spaces without compromising on style. “The key for us is flexibility,” explains Gary, “Our business has gone through several

transformations over the past 40 years or so. Like most people, we’ve ridden a roller coaster ride and the critical thing now is to be able to provide our customers with as much product diversity as possible in an efficient and timely way. Most of what we do is relationship based and we understand the value of those relationships with our suppliers.” Richmond has the ability to mass produce panels and furniture as well as the more flexible batch one approach. “We purchased our first Biesse Selco saw in 1997 which is still running strong today, shortly followed by a Selco angle plant and latterly a Rover B nesting cell. Now we have a full capability. We can cut, edge and drill for high volume production runs, as well as nest for small to medium production runs.”
Richmonds’ first Selco beamsaw was installed in 1997 and is ‘still going strong’
Pages FINAL.indd 26
Factory manager James Blackburn, also explains that the purchase of a Skipper 130 throughfeed NC boring machine has had a remarkable impact on the business. “We now drill to order,” enthuses James. “We have improved our efficiency massively by reducing our levels of stock whilst still maintaining high levels of customer service with short lead times. We can manufacture 35,000 panels per week, as well as 1500 flat-pack and 2500 assembled units. “Biesse’s optimisation software has also helped us to reduce material waste, both on the nesting cell and the beamsaws, but the main benefit is the flexibility which the machines give us.” Gary continues: “The reasons why we chose and stay with Biesse are many and varied.

“As a business we’ve been through a few ups and downs, but the Biesse team have been with us every inch of the way. They are reliable and dependable, giving us the business confidence which helps us succeed in a highly competitive market.”
Nothing is ever perfect, but the sign of good service is how fast things are fixed when they go wrong. Biesse have always delivered in that respect. “It’s also about the people and culture. Biesse go that extra mile and listen to what we want and then help us to achieve it. They even modified a machine to make it do what we wanted which has definitely influenced our production techniques. “We are a medium-sized business and any investment we make needs to be justified and absolutely demonstrate value for money. We have confidence in Biesse’s machines and in recent years, this confidence has been further enhanced by their five year warranty and service package. “We bought our first new machine in 1995, which was a Biesse Techno boring and insertion machine and we have expanded this to include cutting and routing. “As a business we’ve been through a few ups and downs, but the Biesse team have been with us every inch of the way. They are reliable and dependable, giving us the business confidence which helps us succeed in a highly competitive market.” www.biesse.com

Redocol – brand quality, versatile and economical Ostermann‘s own brand Redocol has been enjoying tremendous popularity since 2009. The brand now encompasses over 500 products. These comprise articles for workshop needs, an own collection of furniture handles and various well-established glues and adhesives. Typical of the ownbrand philosophy, the focus is on an outstanding balance between price and performance. The brand name Redocol is composed of the parts Red-O and col. Red-O stands for the well-known red Ostermann edging roll, the hallmark of Ostermann. The syllable col stands for collection, being thus an acronym for the whole product range of Ostermann’s own brand programme. Redocol – that is the Ostermann collection with the red O. Every product marketed under the Redocol name satisfies the highest standards of quality demanded for professional applications. The private-label products are closely connected with the name Ostermann. At the same time, they guarantee value for money with an

economic benefit. Only products that meet both requirements – best quality and favourable price – find their place in the Redocol family. Adhesives and cleaners Products such as the hotmelt adhesive Kantomelt, Kantol greenline and the D3 PVAC glue Kombicoll Super-N have become well-known products in every workshop. Furthermore, the range includes all-important glue types for the joiner’s/carpenter’s

workshop and because glueing and cleaning always goes together, tradesmen will find the matching Redocol cleaning agents as well. Worth mentioning are, for example, the proven surface and machine cleaner Teclinex One For All that has been developed by Ostermann, or the popular Finish Cleaner 61. Tip: Redocol hand pump spray bottle The Ostermann experts’ recommendation for a perfect dosing of all Ostermann cleaners is the Redocol hand pump spray bottle made of plastic. The light-weight, extremely robust and versatile spray pump bottle is comfortable to hold and the spray head ensures an exact dosing. It can be filled with most solventbased liquids. Furniture handles and heightadjustable legs With the popular Redocol handles, Ostermann offers tradesmen valuable inspiration and the right
handle solution for all kinds of taste. Less visible, but nontheless practical in kitchen construction, are the Redocol height-adjustable legs. Quality, an easy assembly, versatile accessories as well as the favourable price are the advantages that count here. Workshop needs Sometimes, it’s the small things that matter in the workshop routine. The Redocol assortment comprises practical helpers as for example the popular birch or beech jointing biscuits, as well as dowels, hook and look tapes or edging clamps – products that no workshop should be missing. Specially for mitred bonds, the Ostermann experts recommend the particularly strong and tearresistant PVC adhesive tape, extra strong. 40 CNC machinery and equipment With over 50 years of experience manufacturing made-to-measure bedrooms and home offices in the UK, Sharps Bedrooms is one of the most established brands in the KBB market. When producing over 170 bedrooms a day, production has to be slick to maximise output and maintain high standards, so when faced with an ageing angle plant that was proving unreliable, Sharps Bedrooms turned to reconditioned machinery supplier, Ferwood UK, to find a solution.
Stay sharp with Ferwood “We’d never worked with used machinery before,” admits David Lloyd, factory operations manager for Sharps Bedrooms. “In the past, when a machine needed replacing, we would go directly to the machinery manufacturer and purchase a new machine.” It was following a chance encounter at the woodworking machinery and materials show, the W Exhibition, that Sharps started to take a greater interest in the Ferwood Group and its Ferwood Approved service – a service that sees second-hand machinery follow a strict ten-step process to ensure each one is stripped and rebuilt to the highest standard. “It was the cost-saving element that first attracted us to the idea of a second-hand machine, but it didn’t take us long to realise that we weren’t just talking about a used machine that had been given a quick clean with an oily rag. We
Pages FINAL.indd 40
were talking about a machine that had been rebuilt from the ground up and reconditioned to within an inch of its life. We didn’t expect this from a second-hand machinery supplier and we were kicking ourselves that we hadn’t looked into this market sooner.” Sharps knew what it wanted: a like-for-like Holzma angle plant that could continue to work with five 2.8m sheets at a time for up to 15 hours a day. Thanks to its vast global machinery inventory, a replica was sourced within three weeks and ready for David and his team to view in Ferwood’s 18,600m2 showroom in Pollenzo, Italy. “The team flew us out there to see it and took us through each step of the reconditioning process,” explains David. “From the initial handling, cleaning, sanding and painting to disassembling the complete machine and checking
every component, the lengths Ferwood go to when reconditioning a machine is phenomenal. Seeing really is believing and it certainly made us re-evaluate our thoughts on Ferwood’s approach to used machinery. After experiencing this for ourselves, the decision to work with Ferwood was inevitable.” Once rebuilt, Sharps Bedrooms was invited to view the Holzma angle plant in action and run its own materials through it. “We shipped our materials to the factory so we could see how the machine would work with our board,” explains David. “We cut over 2500m2 of board a day and, as a result, we can’t afford to be let down by our machines. Ferwood’s approach left nothing to chance and the team were on hand throughout the process to answer
any questions we might have had. It’s simple actions like this that gave us confidence in both the machine and Ferwood.” To limit downtime, work planned to be carried out on the old machine was subcontracted, giving Ferwood time to install and test the machine in the factory. David adds: “Sharps Bedrooms work direct with the public so we have to work to a given time scale and delivery dates must be met. Ferwood took this into consideration and worked around us. Their engineers also didn’t leave until we were happy and the operators were confident using the machine.” David concludes: “This experience has opened my eyes to Ferwood Approved machinery and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another machine from them. I’ve already recommended them to somebody else. I couldn’t fault the service and the team is always on hand to help. The machine is also exactly what we needed. In fact, it’s a higher spec than our old machine – thanks to the addition of a wood chopper – but purchased for a fraction of the price. This has allowed us to keep investing in our manufacturing facilities and new machinery.” 01132 866689 www.ferwoodgroup.com @FerwoodGroupUK

44 CNC machinery and equipment Masterwood Spa is one of the leading suppliers dedicated to CNC solutions, supplying machines all around the world to meet customers manufacturing requirements.
Masterwood – solutions for all and Made in Italy Over 50 years ago the companies of Muti and Zangheri & Boschetti began manufacturing machines for mortising and drilling, in 1990 the two companies joined forces and became Masterwood Spa which allowed further development of its range of CNC machines for all applications. The three families are still heavily involved in the company. In 2003 the leading software house of Tecnos was acquired allowing Masterwood to develop software packages to meet the growing demand for one shop packages. Today Masterwood are one of the leading dedicated designers and manufacturers supplying CNC packages in over 50 countries around the world.
mortising, and extra tooling positions for the bespoke markets. A full range of matrix bed machines for nesting and special applications have been developed over many years, these are available in three-, four-, and five axis versions. Automatic loading and unloading systems are available too. Masterwood also provides options for the smaller workshops such as the TF range of drilling machines that can also include routers and dowel inserters. Nesting with CAD+T An efficient nesting process starts with software, ends with ready parts and offers a faster and more efficient material handling within the production process. CAD+T offers – for more than 28 years – complete software solutions for the interior design and furniture manufacturing industry. One of the main topics for manufacturing is nesting. Nesting is a key operation for machining of board materials like MDF, plywood or particleboard. The goal is to achieve an ideal machining result, marginal wastage and the improvement of production flow. Nesting can be done with CNC machines, beamsaws or with advanced tools 3D nesting. Using CNC machines allows users to cut and run all further successive operations only on one machine. So far the digital part data could have been loaded to the machines’ software but needed to be aligned manually by an operator in order to run the nesting. CAD+T now offers a nesting tool which takes the CNC programs directly from the shop floor drawings, nest them and send the correct machine data in the right format directly to the machine. The software recognises automatically material and grain
Pages FINAL.indd 48
directions and chooses the right tool as well as the production process. This data can directly be used on the machine and doesn’t require any manual check. Advantages of CNC machines with more than one processing head is the possibility to manufacture 3D pocket cutouts using different broaching strategies, the speed-up of tools for long operations and the selection of the right tool to achieve the highest quality of the surface. Using nesting sometimes leads
as well to rethink your construction principles. What used to be done with drillings and dowels, can now be done with groove and rabbet. CAD+T offers different options for your production process and post processors for any established three- and five-axis CNC machines. Next to the nesting on CNC machines, CAD+T offers a solution for nesting on beamsaws. An intelligent sequencing, automatic shredding of material offcuts to achieve short processing times for wastage materials, handling of
several jobs at the same time and the highest cutting quality, mark the software. Powerful, configurable post processors cater for optimal performance of your machine for 3D Nesting. The software also supports as well robot systems for feeding and allow you to define 3D cut-off regions. CAD+T presented its latest developments and products at the W18 in Birmingham and would like to say thank you to the visited its stand. www.cadt-solutions.com

How the right tooling helps you get the best return from your CNC investment CNC machines are a significant capital investment for any company. Small but expanding joinery and furniture manufacturers, right through to international production companies with world-class manufacturing facilities turn to CNC machines to streamline their business, and increase production and profitability. So, with easy-to-use modern technology helping fill the skills gap and increase flexibility, why isn’t it going quite to plan? “We hear about all sorts of different production and manufacturing issues, from poor finish right through to noise,” says Leitz Tooling sales manager Brian Maddox. “Companies large and small rely heavily on their CNC machines, so issues like short tool life and product rectification can become serious problems which affect their bottom line.” Working with Leitz, two market-leading British caravan manufacturers, Coachman and Elddis discovered it was the tooling on their CNCs which was holding them back. Both Elddis and Coachman had been experiencing increasing pressure on production and needed to get product to the assembly departments faster to meet demand. This could be considered a ‘good’ problem, but it is one both companies recognised as a serious issue which had to be resolved. Coachman Caravans has a reputation for producing high quality, well-built products. Steve Marsh, Coachman’s machine shop manager says: “The diamond nesting routers on our CNCs were lasting two or three working days. We had to constantly check the boards and tool for clogging. The frequent down time alone was a big problem.” The diamond nesting routers from Coachman’s previous tooling supplier were less than half the price of the equivalent offered by Leitz, but once the whole production cost was evaluated, the solution was clear.
Pages FINAL.indd 49
“Leitz diamond nesting router is very impressive. Its first run lasted 37 days on the machine and we got through almost 12 times the number of sheets with no clogging, vastly reduced noise, a great finish and double the feed speed. With more diamond edges giving an up and down cut, it’s just a far superior product.” Elddis started life as a manufacturer in 1964. In the 50 plus years since, the company has expanded and today includes some of the UK’s most well-known and
best-selling brands. All caravans and motorhomes are manufactured in the company’s County Durham production facility, which employs 350 skilled staff. Both Elddis and Coachman have similar CNC routers, but used tooling products from different suppliers. Brian Jackson, production manager for Elddis says: “To try and help with the finish we were running the previous diamond nesting router. It was noisy, and after the first service, the tips were coming off. We went
to Leitz for a solution, and they delivered on everything we needed.” Brian Maddox says: “This experience isn’t just limited to caravan production, or CNC manufacture for that matter. We solve issues like this across the spectrum of manufacturing of all scale and type every day.” Leitz works with companies before they make individual or additional machine investments, looking at the products the customer makes, through to the right tooling for the jobs. This helps the company decide on the right specification for the machine so they are well informed and prepared before they seek proposals from machine manufacturers. “Our tools give an excellent finish, which means less sanding and rectification, less coating and ultimately, lower costs. Companies can become fixated on the purchase price of tools, but correct, quality tools can have a fantastic positive impact on other costs,” continues Brian. “You have to ask yourself, what would you pay for 12 times the productivity from the same tool?” Coachman’s Steve Marsh says: “Buying quality makes all the difference.” Leitz Tooling UK Ltd. is an ISO 9001:2015 certified company. Every tool from Leitz is manufactured to BS EN847 1-3, which means every tool is tested to a high standard of accuracy and safety, helping prolong the life of the tool and, ultimately, the machines on which they are used. 01279 454530 salesuk@leitz.org www.leitz-tooling.co.uk www.shopuk.leitz.org

State-of-the-art technology is used in this machine to precisely control the speed, height and tilt. This gives the user optimum accuracy with every profile that is moulded. The CNC spindle moulder runs off an innovative Siemens control system to make it exceptionally easy to adjust the speed, height and tilt giving an optimised accuracy and enabling the ability to achieve perfect results. The touchscreen control makes it easy to adjust the machine, while the eye-level position of the screen makes it clear to read. A high performance motor of 5kW drives the machine and gives extraordinary torque to the cutter block enabling clean and accurate cuts. The robust, finely ground, cast iron tables allow for easy workpiece travel whilst also reducing any chances of corrosion. This spindle moulder centres around a laser-cut steel chassis, robotically welded giving a strong, stable shell. The strong material
increases the lifespan of the machine as it protects it from knocks and absorbs any vibration. Additionally, the use of steel improves the accuracy of the machine in that a good stable base is very important. Steel also has a natural frequency of oscillation and therefore reduces any potential vibration. A sliding table, measuring 1250mm x 310mm, comes with the spindle moulder. With a travel of 1500mm, it is equipped with a large support table. The sliding table also has a telescopic fence with a maximum length of 2850mm, twin length stops and a digital display of angle settings. This machine not only represents superb build quality but it also delivers engineering excellence to the workshop, able to take on virtually any task in a large workshop. The innovative features and unprecedented technology make this spindle moulder simple and easy to use. 0800 371822 www.axminster.co.uk

62 Surfacing and coating Gallito Ltd, a member of the DCS Group of companies, has recently installed a comprehensive product finishing facility for the UK’s premier manufacturer and supplier of themed props and accessories.
Hero’s welcome for Gallito MD Based at Thorp Arch Estate, near Wetherby in West Yorkshire, Event Prop Hire provides a (literally) incredible range of goods on hire for any kind of themed event; ranging from indulgent private parties, to glamorous corporate events, new product launches, and have even adorned the sets of Strictly and X-Factor. Event Prop Hire was founded 15 years ago by co-directors Matthew East and Rosie Ellis – the duo had studied together through university, graduating in 2002 with degrees in Entertainment Design and dreams of setting up in business designing, building and selling props. Within a couple of years, those dreams had become reality and the business, originally
called Scenecraft, was operating from a 150m2 workshop and selling props ranging from alien costumes to giant sets of teeth. Many of the company’s clients were involved with the events industry and, from early on, it became apparent that the themed props they were being commissioned to build would generally be used just once… and then scrapped. It occurred to Matt and Rosie that it would be much more cost-effective for their clients if they were able to hire the props, certainly much less wasteful, and potentially a much more lucrative business model. The upshot of this inspired notion was a relocation of the business to larger premises, employment for an extra pair of hands, a
company van… and a reincarnation of the business as Event Prop Hire. Event Prop Hire rapidly acquired a reputation for exceptional quality and service within the industry and, over the next few years, as the company’s client base grew exponentially, Event Prop Hire grew to meet the demand. Utilising 3D scanning and the latest engineering design software, Gallito created detailed drawings and a virtual 3D representation of the proposed facility before any construction work commenced
Gallito’s sales manager, Mike Lodge, handled the initial enquiry and, following site visits and discussions with Matt to assess the requirements, was able to present a proposal to Event Prop Hire which fully met the company’s needs for a range of different sized enclosures; providing a series of clean, safe areas for carrying out a multiplicity of manufacturing and maintenance tasks – but all with the same common requirement for efficient and effective extraction of potentially harmful fumes and particulates. “Matthew knew what he wanted to achieve from the installation of new spray booths and enclosures, and it was then our job to interpret
Pages FINAL.indd 64
those requirements and come up with a design that fulfilled all his needs, and provided an extraction capacity that would cope effectively and easily with the many and varied demands of the manufacturing and maintenance departments,” Mike Lodge explained. Before commencing on any design work for the new facility Gallito undertook three-dimensional scanning at the warehouse and, utilising this scanned data within their professional engineering design software, the team’s designers created a virtual 3D environment in which to develop a design layout for the structure – ensuring precision in manufacture and guaranteeing a perfect fit when the
enclosures were installed on site. The result is an imposing two-storey construction, providing a total floor space of around 800m2, with nine individual enclosures, utilising 12 separate belt-driven axial fans, sized at 710mm and 813mm diameter, from 5.5kW to 7.5kW, and capable of extracting a combined total of over 280,000m3 of air per hour. In addition to a ventilated paint storeroom, there are seven enclosures on the ground
In the largest enclosure, with a working height of 3.5m, Event Prop Hire has over 100m2 of floor space available – allowing finishing work to be undertaken on multiple items at the same time

floor; including four identical enclosures, used primarily for sanding operations, sized at 4.5m x 4.5m x 3m high, each with a dedicated extraction fan, double-width sliding access doors, and a series of interconnecting personnel doors to permit unrestricted access from one room to another. On the opposite side of a 20m long covered access corridor are two further enclosures; each with a floor area of around 40m2 and vertical filtration area of approximately 12m2, again serviced by independent extraction fans – one 5.5kW and the other 7.5kW, and capable of extracting over 50,000m3 per hour. The paint store is centrally-located for easy access from all areas, and is situated adjacent to the largest enclosure in the facility. With a personnel access door directly into the paint store, and two further double-width sliding doors providing access to 112m2 of workable floor space, this enclosure provides filtration across an area of around 45m2; with one entire wall fitted with filter media, and extraction being provided by four separate 7.5kW fans – capable of extracting over 90,000m3 of air per hour from this large open space. The mezzanine area is accessed from either end of the structure via steel staircases, and a gated loading area on the first floor landing area allows items to be forklifted up and down as necessary. This area provides two further independent spray booth enclosures, each having a filtration area of around 15m2. These enclosures have three metre high ceilings and each room has independent extraction

provided by two 5.5kW fans. ““This has been an interesting and novel project for our team at Gallito,” commented Mike Lodge, “and you can’t help but smile when you walk through the warehouse at Event Prop Hire. The close geographical location of the two businesses ensured excellent communication and collaboration throughout the design and construction process and, with our manufacturing plant on-hand just round the corner, any minor design modifications requested by EPH were executed swiftly and efficiently.”
“This installation by Gallito has achieved what we asked for and has fulfilled all our expectations” Everyone involved with the new finishing department is complimentary about the installation which Gallito’s team fitted in just 20 working days. “We supply products on hire for over 2000 events every year,” says Matthew East, “including corporate events for some of the biggest brands and blue-chip companies and, to maintain our reputation for excellent quality and service, our production facility must be able to cope with anything and everything we throw at it, in an efficient and timely manner. This installation by Gallito has achieved what we asked for and has fulfilled all our expectations – from first
enquiry through to the day of commissioning, Mike Lodge and the team of Gallito designers, engineers and fitters have performed outstandingly.” Mark Carson, who took over the reins as Gallito’s managing director in January, following the retirement of former MD, Ian Ward, has been instrumental in the company’s expansion since joining the company in July 2017. The business now occupies almost 3000m2 of manufacturing space at Thorp Arch, and traditional metalworking skills are supported by a plethora of automated machinery, including advanced laser cutting technology. Gallito has the capacity to manufacture high quality bespoke spray booths and enclosures, in a range of materials, to just about any shape and size, employing dry filter or water wash filtration systems, along with a standard range of booths, paint kitchens, drying ovens, associated conveying equipment and ancillaries. The company also manufactures the FastClip Ductwork System – a complete range of cliptogether ductwork sections and components, made from high quality galvanised steel, and available in a wide range of sizes. “I was delighted with the end result our engineers have achieved here,” says Mark Carson. “It was terrific to receive such excellent feedback from Matt and the team at Event Prop Hire and to observe the plant being utilised as intended.” 01937 844698 www.gallito.co.uk

VELiA EX: scale the heights of productivity Always one for a challenge, Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks have responded to the demands of an ever-increasing market, that demands higher lifts with greater capacities. Mitsubishi has now developed the new VELiA EX, its new range mid-to-high-level order pickers. Engineered to drive productivity, while saving time and money, VELiA EX includes a heavy-duty, 48v model which offers an unbeatable over 12m pick height and 1250kg capacity. Like every Mitsubishi order picker, the VELiA EX benefits from the crucial features which impress operators and employers alike – as standard. Decades of fast-picking experience have gone into the development of the range’s spacious operator’s compartment. It’s been designed to keep pickers picking – even through the longest of shifts. With its wide entry and ultra-low step height – just 215mm – it offers virtually effortless access. Easy grab handles offer added security when entering/exiting the platform. To minimise the risk of slips and falls, designers have covered it in a super-grip material. Further protection is offered by VELiA EX’s Operator Presence Sensor (OPS). Set in the platform, it removes the need for a dead man’s switch, a common trip hazard. Because OPS covers a wide area, operators have freedom of movement within the cabin – reducing risk of fatigue and delays. Visibility plays a significant role in safe, productive picking. Recognising this, Mitsubishi designers looked for new ways of maximising the operator’s field of vision. This work resulted in the development of the MaxVision mast and overhead guard. With clear-view forward panels and roof, it extends VELiA EX’s visibility for precise, damage-free operations. VELiA EX’s powerful AC motor ensures high drive speed and acceleration – even when fully laden. An ECO mode allows employers to reduce their energy consumption by 12% – without affecting the machine’s performance.
Pages FINAL.indd 74
Because the mid-to-high-level order picker’s operation is so smooth, quiet and controlled, VELiA EX owners benefit from extended shift length and lower maintenance requirements. Upkeep is further reduced through easy access to key components, such as the motor. The battery offers exceptionally easy access for quicker changeovers. Further savings are made in this area thanks to a battery discharge indicator which keeps operators continuously informed. 0845 371 3048 www.mitsubishi-forklift.co.uk

Kite Packaging launches latest website update As a company known for its innovative thinking, Kite Packaging is always looking for opportunities to make its brand and business better. Kite’s team of ecommerce specialists has just completed its latest project – to redevelop and evolve key features of its B2B website. As the business-to-consumer online market grows, the world of B2B has existed in a relative adolescent state. Although traditional, online transactions are typically thought of in a consumer capacity, the value of online purchasing for B2B is growing all the time. With global business magazine Forbes’ recent statement on the expected spend per B2C customer being considerably less than B2B, it puts greater emphasis on the B2B space to focus more on better automation and efficiency in their online presence. More and more businesses are seeing the value of taking their brand into the online market even if they still maintain a bricks-andmortar business. The shift from bricks-to-clicks can often prove challenging but nevertheless rewarding as Kite discovered when it became the first in its sector to launch a fully-fledged ecommerce website. The focus of Kite’s latest ecommerce project is on improved user experience including elements such as better navigation, design advances and improved on-site functionality, all of which further enforce the strength of the Kite brand. A particularly useful design element of Kite’s new website is its enhanced usability for those accessing the site using a handheld device. With the concept of responsive design surfacing in website development in recent years, organisations have been expected to produce an
Pages FINAL.indd 76
interface in which customers can navigate across with ease irrespective of the smart device they are using. Kite Packaging has had a responsive website for several years and the newlyenhanced version gives an even greater customer experience for those customers using the Kite website on a mobile device. The ecommerce site’s high quality videos in the form of demonstration videos and explanatory company information videos now give customers a deeper insight into the Kite brand and products. As these are a highly successful visual element in the online world, and with marketing predictions of 2019 suggesting video popularity is only set to increase, their inclusion is becoming an integral part to executing successful, online business platforms. As well as a market-leading ecommerce website, Kite’s strength also lies in its existing network of regional distribution centres of which the latest site includes expanded details. Users can now access a more in-depth analysis of the Kite Packaging Group services and solutions division, exploring its capabilities and viewing case studies. Carving a name in surfboard shaping with Festool The surfboard industry is going back to its roots – quite literally in the case of Lignum Surfboards. The company crafts wooden surfboards and skateboards and hand planes in its workshop in South Devon using Festool’s high-quality power tools. By using traditional materials, superior craftsmanship and the best-in-class tools with a passion for the ocean, Lignum is creating some of the most sought-after surfboards. Founded in 2016 by Alen Van Rooyen and Harry Robinson, with backgrounds in boat making and traditional carpentry, the two have turned their surfboardmaking hobby into a successful business with a small skilful team. Every board is made and designed from scratch, taking between six to eight weeks to complete. With so much going in to each board, using the right tools to get the best possible finish is critical. Asked how they chose their tools, Harry comments: “We are passionate about creating fine, handcrafted wooden surfboards. Festool tools are used to build the boards from start to finish to ensure we can capitalise on the precision that modern technologies offer. I was
Pages FINAL.indd 78
introduced to Festool by Alen and I just can’t imagine using any other make of power tool now.” Alen continues: “Festool tools play a part throughout every build, from the raw material to the last sanding we do before our boards go out the door. The quality of the tools reflects the quality of the work that we can produce. We are after the highest standards and I am confident Festool offers that.” Echoing Alen’s comments: Harry adds: “Every tradesman will tell you that the two biggest enemies are dust and sanding. The dust gets everywhere and sanding does takes a long time. Any little marks or scratches you leave on the board before you’ve finished will always come back to haunt you. “The Festool range is brilliant because the choice of sandpaper is second to none. We can use a variety of backing pads for different
stages of the board, together with different hardness and grits. Now we’re able to sand our boards in half the time compared to when we started. It really saves us time, makes a better product and keeps us healthier thanks to the integrated dust extraction system.” Although the Lignum team is leading the market, it is always keen to learn more. Its relationship with Festool continued way beyond the initial sale, as Harry explains: “We thought we knew a bit about sanding before, but after talking to the Festool experts we learnt that the boards can result in a much better quality. “Some of the first boards were verging on uneconomical and we were really concerned. Paul Kirby at Festool introduced us to the Granat sandpaper and that was revolutionary. Festool turned that around with one phone call.” www.festool.co.uk Images Brahma Studios

New wood waste heater for furniture manufacturer A North-west bespoke furniture manufacturer has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology (WWT) to get the money-saving benefits of waste disposal and heating. Rothwell & Thomas was established 34 years ago and supplies high quality custom-made furniture from its headquarters in Manchester. Having already owned a wood waste heater, the company has already experienced the benefits, so when its current wood waste heater needed replacing it wasn’t a question of should they replace it, but just a question of what model they should replace it with. The company already used Wood Waste Technology to service its original wood waste heater, so managing director at Rothwell & Thomas, Tom Shaughnessy, contacted Wood Waste Technology for a quote for a new one. MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, visited the 10,000ft2 premises to undertake a site survey, following which Rothwell &

As Wood Waste Technology serviced our old heater even though it wasn’t one of their machines and was from a different manufacturer, we knew the company was good to deal with and had a reputation for producing quality, reliable wood waste heaters. “With the amount of wood waste we generate, we wouldn’t want to be without a wood waste burner as it saves us a significant amount of money on waste disposal bills. Similarly, in winter, it’s great to not have to worry about rising oil or gas costs, and just enjoy the free heating generated.” Tom continues: “We’re delighted with our new wood waste heater. It saves us a fortune and is extremely economical, so we’re looking forward to a swift payback on our investment.” Kurt says: “Like our business, Rothwell & Thomas combines craftmanship with modern

technological advancements. We’re delighted the company chose one of our wood waste heaters as a replacement for its old heater, as all the wood waste heaters we’ve ever sold are still in operation today.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. AFS Biomass in partnership with RESET, Renewable Energy Solutions Environmental Technology. AFS Biomass are proud to announce the UK launch of SyngaSmart, an international patent-pending integrated solution for power and heat generation through biomass pyro-gasification in a carbon-negative and no-waste production cycle. Cutting edge plug-and-play co-generation plants manufactured in Italy to exacting standards, the SyngaSmart CHP systems are housed in 20 ft insulated and sound proofed modular shipping containers, enclosing the whole generation process, from biomass loading to power generation. SyngaSmart solid biomass combined heat and power systems are carbon negative with no waste. Emissions are limited to the engine exhaust gases which comply with all emission standards and restrictions. The “no waste” production cycle only generates energy and a small amount of biochar, a powerful natural fertilizer and water treatment additive. SyngaSmart systems are eligible for the Government RHI scheme, (Renewable Heat Incentive), which rewards businesses that adopt biomass heating systems for all the metered heat generated for 20 years. A welcome additional income stream.

Damaged products in e-commerce With the fast-evolving technological climate of today, the audacious online sphere that has transformed the businessto-consumer relationship is now raising the bar for brand reliability. The traditional shopping experience has been revolutionised in recent years – with the average shopper now turning to the internet to find their desired product. Due to powerful influences like Amazon, bricks-and-mortar shops have been left with no choice other than to develop an online presence at haste. The changing landscape has instigated the downfall of certain well-established high street stores, forcing them into liquidation whilst the e-commerce sector flourishes –so how is this swift move from bricks to clicks impacting brand reliability? This monumental growth in e-commerce sales has meant businesses having to focus heavily on ordering and delivery processes in order to maximise profit. When

a consumer purchases something online, it acts as a trust exercise between the business and the customer, one that has a direct impact on brand reputation. Out of the millions of products ordered online, an average of 30% are returned in comparison with the 8.89% in bricks-and-mortar stores,
which begs the question, where exactly is e-commerce failing? In a recent report, it was determined that over half of Britons have had a parcel arrive damaged or late which has inevitably had a detrimental effect on the business to consumer relationship. Let’s be honest, if someone orders a

product and it arrives damaged, what sort of impression does it give of the company? When receiving broken or damaged goods, it leaves the customer dissatisfied and the likelihood of that customer then ordering from the business again is reduced, making it vital to minimise the chances of goods arriving

88 Updates So how is the problem < damaged. being addressed? One answer to this conundrum lies in the whole pick, pack and despatch process. All e-commerce companies should be investing into the pick, pack and delivery process, as this is a foundation for an assured operation and by extension a successful brand. Focusing on the fulfilment of the order ensures the maximum effort is being put forward to counteract damaged goods in e-commerce businesses and this can be executed in multiple ways. One of the first avenues that should be targeted is the packaging of products. This enables a greater guarantee of products being delivered intact and without harm and today the importance of utilising good packaging can often be overlooked. However, suppliers such as Kite Packaging focus heavily on ensuring choice and range availability are at the heart of its protective packaging offering. If done right, the packaging process can elevate a company above its competitors as the right product presentation sends the right
KestevenMar18.indd 1
Pages FINAL.indd 88
message to the consumer. Incorporating high quality packaging material lessens the chance of damage in transit, therefore reducing the cost of replacing and resending products for suppliers. With the rise of social media and other online platforms, brand image is becoming central to the online business world and effective, aesthetically-pleasing packaging is an integral part of the modern day, virtual shopping experience. And then there is the issue of equipment – an element which is key to accommodating the current technological, industrial workplace. As more companies see growth and an increased volume of orders, it introduces the need for automated systems which provide consistency and reliability. Implementing an automated and meticulous working environment
speeds up the pick, pack and despatch process meaning businesses can boost their efficiency and productivity levels, ultimately boosting their consumers’ trust in the brand. By integrating automation technology, companies can reduce their manual costs at the same time as meeting client demand for speed and consistency. Another pivotal part of the pick, pack and despatch process is the actual delivery and so investing in the right third party courier is a fundamental factor in minimising damaged goods. One thing to remember when it comes to choosing the right one for you is that you might need to consider different couriers for different products. They don’t all deliver all profiles of parcels or freight, therefore picking a specialist courier to distribute
your stock, entails higher quality safeguarding and thus minimal damage. For e-commerce businesses, reducing the number of damaged products has a massively positive impact for brand reliability and is important for profitability by reducing unnecessary cost. Investment into the pick, pack and despatch process is paramount to tackling the issue of damaged goods, although there is an initial upfront cost, the return on order fulfilment is highly beneficial for businesses. By implementing automation combined with high quality packaging and delivering products using specialist couriers, companies can bridge the gap between the e-commerce 30% returns and bricks-and-mortar’s 8.89%. Kite Packaging provides packaging expertise, solutions and products. With a unique employeeownership model and a key focus on alternative, effective packing solutions, Kite is continuously evolving to protect products around the world. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Viessmann wood combustion systems – innovative wood firing systems up to 8000kW The global energy situation is characterised by limited natural gas and oil reserves as consumption increases. In addition, increasing CO2 emissions heat the earth’s atmosphere and thus lead to climate change. This forces a responsible use of existing resources and requires more efficiency and the increased use of renewable energies. Biomass plays a special role here. It provides most of the renewable energy, is steadily available and can be stored as needed, unlike wind and solar energy. Wood as a fuel remains costeffective in times of unpredictable energy prices, burns CO2 neutral and, in conjunction with sustainable forestry, helps to implement environmental and economic goals. As a specialist for biomass boilers and power plants in the power range up to 8000kW, Viessmann Holzfeuerungsanlagen
GmbH is one of the leading fullservice providers in this industry. Viessmann Holzfeuerungsanlagen focuses on the conception and implementation of biomass plants for industrial, commercial and municipal customers. With an export share of around 88% of sales, the company is internationally oriented, with more than 4000 plants in operation in Europe alone. Viessmann Holzfeuerungsanlagen (MAWERA) was founded in 1975 as MAWERA and currently employs around 120 people at its location in Hard am Bodensee in Austria. From boilers through fuel delivery systems to exhaust gas cleaning, the products are suitable for all wood fuels. An essential feature are the different firing systems, which are individually planned for each project and tailored to the needs of the customer.
Depending on the heat demand, hot water-, steam- or thermal oil boilers are used. Viessmann supplies the tailor-made system turnkey and provides also the necessary accessories. Services such as conception, service and assembly organisation, emission measurements and the renovation of old plants complete the offer. As the leading international supplier of heating technology
systems, the Viessmann Group offers a complete programme for all energy sources and performance ranges. Founded in 1917, the family-owned company employs 12000 people worldwide. With 23 production companies, sales organisations in 49 countries and 120 sales offices worldwide, Viessmann is internationally oriented. www.mawera.co.uk

Small is beautiful – Vecoplan develops new energy-efficient singleshaft shredders Vecoplan’s newly-developed and compact VAZ series are durable and sturdy single-shaft shredders which enable joiners and carpenters in particular to process wood leftovers in a dependable way. The series is equipped with energy-efficient drive technology. Wood processors benefit from its very low operating costs. With single-shaft shredders, companies have universal and frequently-used machines which in most applications can manage without additional feeding systems. With the VAZ series, the user can feed in the collected materials directly and without a feeding system. The hydraulic-powered slide feeds them quickly and easily into the shredding mechanism. Since the rotor turns particularly slowly, it makes little noise or dust during vertical feeding. The VAZ 110 XL for example has a rotor diameter of 370mm and a material outlet of 1075mm. Wood-processing companies can use this sturdy shredding solution

to process chipboard, hardwood and solid wood waste, bark, cardboard or softwood, turning them into wood chips and material suitable for making briquettes. The special feature of these compact units is its patented ESC drive: with a drive capacity of 11 to 37kW, the asynchronous motor with its powerful frequency converter is energy-efficient, inexpensive and economical in operation. Compared with competitors’ products, it allows users to save up to 25% in energy thanks to its improved efficiency. The belt drive features sophisticated slippage control plus extraneous material detection – and fast reversing and restarting makes the ESC drive very dynamic. The cutting unit consists of a profiled rotor with easy-to-change counter-knives that can be used on both sides. The rotor is mounted inside a solid steel housing. 0049 2661 62670 www.vecoplan.de Images Vecoplan AG
