Comment Following the considerable effort extended by exhibitors at the the recent W Exhibition and Elements show, a natural lull in activity follows as all who were involved ruminate, digest, process and act on the myriad conversations and exchanges during the event. Some go on a welldeserved break, from my part, suffering as I was with a range tedious postshow oral maladies, a forced reflective period was what the doctor ordered. Of course, this cogitative state echoes the nation at large as we and our dear politicians wrestle with ongoing Brexit issues. At the show, the overwhelming majority of exhibitiors told myself and my John Legg team of a very positive exeprience, with many pleasantly surprised by higher Editorial director than expected enquiry levels saying they had never done so well at a UK trade show, ever! It should be said that many thanks should go to the event director, Lisa Campagnola, and her team for, a terrific 2018 event. The 2020 event was announced during the show and it will be held in halls 18, 19 and 20 – so we can look forward to a renewed and invigourated event that should look and feel slightly different. Looking to the new year, we take our customay stride into 2019 by taking a look at what’s in store for the industry and the key suppliers. Further forward, in May we will be looking at one of the most interesting aspects of manufacturing at the moment – known as Industry 4.0, with the Internet of Things, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and the like. As a special supplement to the May issue, we will provide insight and analysis for forward-thinking manufacturers discussing how the adoption of these technologies and methods can benefit and we will also examine the best-conceived options available today.

Buoyant Upholstery gains Certified Company status under fire compliance scheme Leading UK upholstery manufacturer, Buoyant Upholstery, has been confirmed by the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) as the latest company to gain Certified status under its Compliance Scheme for the Fire Performance of Upholstered Furniture’ Despite being in place since 1988 the Furniture & Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations (FFFSR) are complex and require sophisticated management to demonstrate compliance. The Furniture Industry Research Association scheme aims to offer reassurance that a manufacturer, retailer, upholsterer or supplier of upholstered furniture has suitable processes and procedures in place to demonstrate due diligence compliance with FFFSR. In order to become a Certified Company of the Compliance Scheme, Buoyant Upholstery’s manufacturing site was audited to ensure due diligence procedures covering all facets of production were not only in place, but were robust enough to meet the requirements of the FFFSR. This included checking its process

North-west to usher in UK’s next industrial revolution with £20m Made Smarter programme Industrial digital technologies (IDT), including robotics, artificial intelligence, 3D printing and the Internet of Things (IoT), that could revolutionise manufacturing processes are the focus of a new £20 million initiative to help the North-west’s manufacturing sector. Officially launched in Liverpool in November, and backed by government and some of the world’s biggest businesses, the Made Smarter North-west programme is set to engage with 3000 SME manufacturers based in Cheshire and Warrington, Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and the Liverpool City Region to boost productivity. Companies that get involved in the project will get the chance to access match-funded support and advice regarding how these IDTs could revolutionise their manufacturing processes and reap the benefits of more efficient production. Around 600 North-west manufacturing SMEs will also qualify for more intensive business support, gaining access to match-funded grants, bespoke consultancy, mentoring and other resources which will help them to accelerate commercial growth. It is anticipated that by becoming a test-bed for new types of technologies and advanced processes, the region’s manufacturing sector could generate a 25% increase in productivity and add £115m to the North-west economy. This follows an announcement in the recent Budget that up to £121m of additional Made Smarter programme funding would be made available across the country as part of the Government’s £1.1b Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. As well as through the Made Smarter commission, a partnership has been established between the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the private sector, to oversee delivery of Made Smarter. Co-chaired by Business Secretary Greg Clark, and CEO of Siemens Juergen Maier, the commission includes representatives from 17 leading

FP302.indd 8

UK manufacturers, technology companies and business representative bodies As well as Siemens, which employs 2000 people in the North-west, other members of the commission with a major presence in the North-west region include Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Airbus and Jaguar Land Rover. Juergen Maier said: “Made Smarter has the potential to kickstart a new industrial revolution for our manufacturing sector and be a catalyst for new investment in the latest digital technologies. At its core will be helping local businesses to innovate, creating new opportunities and technologies in the process. It’s a hugely exciting time for the North-west, and I believe this is truly a once-in-agenerational opportunity to boost productivity and create the high value, highly paid jobs of the future” Business Secretary Greg Clark said: “From pharmaceuticals to aerospace, the North-west manufacturing sector has earned a global reputation for excellence and expertise, with manufacturing jobs accounting for one in 10 of the region’s total workforce. With Made Smarter North-west we are giving 3000 manufacturers across the region advice and grants to give them the tools and resources needed to transform the way they do business and pioneer technological innovation in manufacturing. “Through our modern Industrial Strategy, we are boosting

opportunities for UK manufacturing to continue to grow, and the Northwest can lead the way as the UK seizes the economic benefits of digital technology.” Made Smarter will be delivered across the North-west through the Growth Hubs. Its regional roll-out will be co-ordinated by Donna Edwards, managing director of Business Support and Business Finance at the Manchester-based Growth Company. Donna Edwards says: “Growth Hub advisers across the region regularly engage with manufacturers who are interested in adopting new hi-tech processes but are unsure how to go about it. There are also worries about how much to invest and deciding which tech will bring the greatest benefits. “Made Smarter North-west has been developed specifically to address these needs, and through fully-funded advice, support and a programme of match-funded grants, it will offer thousands of local companies the chance to tackle existing challenges, explore new ideas and drive economic growth.” The Made Smarter Northwest launch took place as part of Digital Manufacturing Week and the Manufacturers Leaders’ Summit. The summit is a national conference hosted at Liverpool Arena dedicated to the latest digital manufacturing technologies. At the event Juergen Maier and Donna Edwards were joined by Liverpool’s metro mayor

Steve Rotheram, together with representatives from Cheshire and Warrington, Cumbria, Lancashire and Liverpool City Region LEPs and local Growth Hubs. Also present were several Northwest SMEs who already have developed or deployed IDT within their own processes. These included Rochdale’s Crystal Doors, a vinyl door manufacturer which uses robotics, 3D modelling and hi-tech dust extraction technology across all their operations. Richard Hagan, Crystal Doors managing director, says: “When I tell people we make doors, many of them picture a sawdust-filled workshop, tins of wood stain and boxes of door handles. However, when they visit our facility and see the level of automation we utilise, and the precision technology which we apply to production, they are genuinely stunned. “The efficiencies such processes bring also impact massively on our bottom line, and I would encourage any manufacturer in the region, from any sector, to explore how an initiative like Made Smarter North-west could change the way they work through the adoption of highly advanced manufacturing techniques.” North-west manufacturers that would like to register an interest in taking part in Made Smarter Northwest should contact their local business Growth Hub or visit the Made Samrter website. www.madesmarter.uk

Homag launches new Sawteq B-300 and B-400 flexTec machines Live at Homag Treff 2018, the world market leader unveiled the new additions to its Sawteq range – the B-300 and B-400 flexTec models. The new generation of Homag robotic saws offer unlimited flexibility as they are capable of complete automated production with robotic handling as well as reverting back to manual operation. Highly efficient batch size one production The new B-300 and B-400 models offer complete robotic handling from positioning and loading parts through to unloading and stacking finished workpieces. Previously, saw technology relied on manual handling and workpiece loading which was not only time consuming but also put great physical strain on employees. This is especially evident during batch size one production where machine operators are required to feed and remove parts at high volumes. However, the B-300 and B-400 saws are highly efficient at producing batch size one workpieces at volumes of up to 800 parts per shift. With robotic handling, the saws are able to

carry out unmanned batch size one production in automatic mode. This allows manpower to be used elsewhere in the production process, free-ing up resources for an extremely efficient workflow. Flexible production During the production process, manual operation is occasionally required for some facilities and the B-300 and B-400 models are capable of switching to manual mode as needed. This allows manufacturers to cut shaped materials that cannot be moved by the robot or the storage system such as thin parts or profile workpieces. The option of being able to change between automated handling and manual operation allows for flexible production and reduces the need for multiple machines. It also keeps production lean as machine operators are only required for certain tasks, allowing them to assist in other areas when needed. A further benefit of the new saw models being able to revert to manual operation is that it is possible to cut books of panels for faster, more efficient, production.

The Sawteq B-300 and B-400 models offer complete robotic handling including the loading and unloading of workpieces

It also makes the saws capable of dividing thin panels and carrying out special functions such as panel grooving for maximum versatility. An adaptable solution With a variety of available options and add-ons, including feeding and de-stacking facilities, the new saws are customisable for individual solutions. The Sawteq B-300 and B-400 models are compatible with a range of Homag feeding and de-stacking options for maximum production efficiency, The new Sawteq models can be paired with Homag lifting tables for a variety of bespoke combinations

from side tables for use with robot automation through to highperformance storage systems. The B-300 and B-400 models can also be paired with Homag’s range of lifting tables for automated pallet de-stacking. De-stacking options can be used both in manual mode for the unloading of pallets and workpieces or with a robot to create finished workpiece stacks. Both the Sawteq B-300 and B-400 flexTec models are available with up to five lifting tables in various combinations for automatic batch size one production. intelliDivide – intelligent machining solution For maximum efficiency, the Sawteq B-300 and B-400 saws can be paired with Homag’s intelliDivide software. The software offers optimisation on demand as it displays information that proposes the best machining method to reduce production times, waste and part handling. Available directly from the tapio cloud, intelliDivide doesn’t require any software installation and can be used anywhere with Internet access. Furthermore, customers only pay for what they use; there is no upfront investment cost. 12 Profile This year marks the 70th anniversary of PUR specialist, Kleiberit. Grown to become a global leader and innovator of PUR adhesive systems, Kleiberit’s impressive milestone coincides with the company embarking on a ground-breaking 10-year vision: a €40m investment plan that will see Kleiberit double its capacity and increase both the speed and flexibility of its operation. Furniture & Joinery Production spoke with Kleiberit managing director, Achim Hübener.

Seventy years of Kleiberit Kleiberit began trading in 1948 in Ebenhausen, Germany. Its primary focus was on classical white glue for the woodworking market. The advent of plastic windows prompted a move into adhesives for use with PVC, then, in the 1980s, the focus shifted towards polyurethane hot melts – and it’s this niche that Kleiberit has really made its own. “You don’t lose your history. A big share of our business today is the woodworking industry, and it’s the main part, but we do not see ourselves only as a woodworking company,” explains Achim Hübener, managing director of Kleiberit Germany. “We have outstanding expertise in polyurethane adhesives – hence our slogan, Competence PUR – and this is where we believe we can add value to the business of our customers because we understand polyurethane chemistry.

FP302.indd 12

“For the last 20 years it’s been the key focus of our development. Rather than looking at a particular market segment, we would rather look at the chemistry behind it so today, we manufacture polyurethane hot melts for the automotive industry, for the textile, bookbinding, building and, of course, the woodworking industry.” The adhesive specialist – that has had a subsidiary in the UK since 1992 – openly admits to not striving to be ‘all things to all men.’ “We only supply B2B,” says Achim. “We start with small carpenters but we also go to the big companies in the industry. Our strength lies in the development capabilities we have here, in the manufacturing capabilities we have and in the technical expertise we can offer our customers. These are our three main cornerstones.” Its focus on PUR could be seen as a missed

business opportunity to some but for Kleiberit and its 18 daughter companies situated around the world, its continual commitment and expertise in this area continues to drive the business forward and has seen Kleiberit’s worldwide share of the polyurethane adhesives market reach almost 20%. Achim attributes much of Kleiberit’s success to the hands-on experience of its sales engineers, who spend much of their time working alongside production staff in the factories of Kleiberit customers. “They are not only able to give you a price, or discuss a package that works for you, they are able to run the machine in your factory,” he says. “They will run our glue on your machine and demonstrate what, in our opinion, are the best settings to get the best mileage out of the product, the best coating out of the product and the best adhesion performance out of the product. At Kleiberit’s headquarters in Weingarten, it also has a large scale application centre with industrial-size machinery – a resounding nod to the company’s ongoing investment into research and development. Achim explains: “If you want to put your foil on a full 8 x 4ft sheet of the type you are using, we can do that here. We will not ask you to cut it down to A4 so we can show you the glue works.

07/12/2018 14:31

13 “We ask for a pallet of your boards and we will cover them in industrial conditions using industrial scale machines. It alleviates a lot of trialing on your machinery and prevents any interruption to your production. There is no need for up-scaling because we have proven the production on an industrial scale.” Keen for Kleiberit’s customers to get the most out of its product range and benefit from its team’s exceptional experience in adhesives, customers can also visit the application centre with new materials where Kleiberit’s experts will work with them to find the perfect solu-tion for their manufacturing needs. Achim adds: “This is a real benefit of Kleiberit as a partner. Customers can come here and get good support, good service and a good product.” The close relationships Kleiberit has with machinery manufacturers around the world also aids its continual success. “You cannot produce products in isolation,” says Achim. “We work with major machinery companies who let us participate in their innovation so when they bring out a new machine, we already have the glue that works with it. An example of this is the hot coating story that we developed with Barberan: we had the PUR to provide a perfect bond to melamine; Barberan had the machinery to provide the benefits of a perfect optical finish. “That was the idea behind hot coating: it combines PUR technology and lacquering, and the result is a finish with very high abrasion resistance – enough to use on dance floors – but a softer, more elastic feel from the PUR when you walk on it.”

FP302.indd 13

This insightful approach to business was behind the acquisition of Dekora PUR in 2014. The Hot Coating company can now conduct full scale production trials and technology demonstrations at a moment’s notice, whilst also producing panels for would-be investors who might want to start supplying product ahead of installation of a line of their own. The company is manufacturing for several regular kitchen clients in Germany who want the Hot Coated product, proving the point that Dekora PUR isn’t just a demonstration facility that’s polished meticulously for visitors and opened on demand – it’s a fully fledged production business that’s running two shifts a day. Being pro-active in developing new packaging options for smaller users has also helped Kleiberit open new markets for its products. “With quality becoming more important in the market, we are seeing more demand from small companies who are interested in using PUR, but many don’t have the volume, or the people to run their edgebanders in three shifts,” says Achim. “They are not interested in buying 200 litre drums but they want the quality to compete, so we developed different packaging that fits their requirements. We have developed different formats for use with specific machines, but we also have something that’s easy to use and can be left in an open gluepot without the need for nitrogen blanketing, pre-melters, or drum unloaders,” he continues. The new blister tablet pack is one of a range of alternative packaging options like stand-up pouches and others. “We don’t just look for the chemistry of the product, we look for the

application and try to solve problems with the packaging,” Achim says. “In effect, we’re creating new markets. The small packages are even ideal for people who have machines that take 2kg in a pre-melter when they need a little extra at the end of a shift but don’t want to start a new 20kg drum.” The innovations don’t stop there. Kleiberit has also been instrumental in driving the market towards Isocyanate-free products with its Micro Emissions range. Social responsibility is becoming a fundamental part of manufacturing and the demand for ‘green’ products amongst furniture manufacturers has led to the development of a whole range of Micro Emission, which are now available through Kleiberit UK. It’s exciting times for the global adhesive brand and with its new investment plan set to commence in the second quarter of 2019, it’s full speed ahead for Kleiberit. Achim adds: “Tailor-made products are around 85% of our business and customers want one week from order to delivery. That’s easier if you have your own warehouse for raw materials and finished products, and can control your own logistics. “We will soon be able to run the quantities with a turnaround of 6000 pallets every 10 days thanks to our latest investment plan. Whilst we can look back over our 70 years and feel proud of what we have achieved and the boundaries we have broken, now is the time to look forward.” And what of Brexit? Achim’s pragmatic approach reflects the company’s seven decades of experience that has seen it work through countless global hardships and financial crises. “The UK is a developed and advanced market in terms of manufacturing technology and it’s a good fit with our strengths in industrial applications. It’s been very successful for us and whatever happens with Brexit, we believe in the market. It will be business as usual and no interruption to supply. “Support, working in partnership with customers, that will stay the same. As for the exchange rate, we are used to currency fluctuations. As soon as you decide to become global – and more than 80% of our business is outside Germany – fluctuation in exchange rates is a normal part of your business. You can’t predict it, so you deal with it.” 01530 836699 www.kleiberit.com

14 Installation PDS is on its way to achieving its stated ambition of becoming the leading manufacturer of quality Timber Doorsets, Timber Windows and high volume made-to-measure joinery in the UK.

SCM helps PDS takes a step forward to success From humble beginnings in a small industrial unit in 2003 PDS now operates from substantial purpose built facilities in Littleborough, Lancashire. Mike Bratt, site director of PDS explains: “When PDS was established in 2003, it was with the clear understanding that we would be a UK manufacturer of quality products. Since then the business has evolved into a bespoke timber manufacturer, satisfying not only the needs of our customers, but the stringent legislative requirements of the UK construction sector.” Right tool for the job Getting the right tool for the job has become a key requirement of the leadership team at PDS, which has over the years built up a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of all things joinery, whilst developing andunderstanding of modern manufacturing lean methodologies. With principles based on safety, quality and repeatable improved effective, efficient and economic performance, the abilities of the original long serving moulder were analysed, followed by understanding the benefits an additional modern machine should provide. Potential suppliers were selected and invited to submit specifications. It soon became apparent that the machine will not work in isolation, that in order to get the best outcome, a combination of suppliers and technical knowhow must be involved. With the consent of PDS, Lee Gibson of SCM invited Paul Jennings of Vivaldi Tooling UK to assist in providing a comprehensive solution, ensuring harmony between machine and tooling. Vivaldi Tooling is able to bring to the table extensive knowledge of the industry and its varying production methods and processes used by its numerous customers throughout the world. Expectations and requirements Vivaldi acted to bridge the gap in terms of expectations and requirements when it came to specifying the machine by defining precisely what was required and expected by PDS and conveying this by means of detailed drawings and explanation directly to the technicians at SCM, even down to detailing the position of the feed rollers on the workpiece. Pedigree is all important when choosing the right machine and when it comes to machines

FP302.indd 14

for manufacturing joinery SCM has it. SCM says it has for many years quietly led the field in moulder design. SCM was the first manufacturer to produce a moulder with HSK tool holder technology. SCM pioneered moulder body design by producing them from welded steel arranged in cells to ensure rigidity, a system which was at the time derided by other manufacturers working in cast iron but now adopted by them. With such features as the patented SET-UP system and CNC technology for control and process integration, SCM moulders are second to none and the choice of many top companies.

Working in partnership Complete confidence in the right specification by working closely in partnership and combining the knowledge and experience of SCM, Vivaldi and PDS, PDS had absolute confidence that the machine would do the required job and could only exceed expectations. Due to the nature of the batch of one production philosophy at PDS it was decided to further equip and complement the machine with a return conveyer to enable operation by a single operator. This decision was taken once it was established that down time due to tool changes and set-up had all but been eliminated and throughfeed rates would be massively increased relative to the old machine still used in production. Superset NT Comp 5 was the machine chosen to fit the bill. The machine has five heads, a long 2.5m straightening table ideal for door sets, 15hp top head big enough to tackle the largest of moulds in the toughest of timbers and is capable of taking tools from 100 to 200mm in diameter, electronic positioning of the height and thickness and the T-set quick tool-change

device – simple and fast – which some argue very convincingly is better than HSK. SCM’s patented Set-Up system changes the position of the feed rollers, presser bars and spindle in one adjustment, slashing set-up time and eliminating the likelihood of operator error. The powerful Control 10 programing system which uses simple recognisable icons to guide the operator through programing make it ultrauser friendly. Control 10 can be linked in the company’s network to back up programs and remote diagnostics. More and more a standard option with moulders nowadays, the machine is fitted with a workpiece return conveyer. Vivaldi tooling part of the key to success Paul Jennings of Vivaldi Tooling UK says that in this case it was not just a question of reducing the need for down time because the machine is not affecting capacity. Rather, it is reducing the amount of skilled operator intervention required during the process, the aim being to free up resource to be more effective in other direct value-adding areas. When recommending a tooling system, we at Vivaldi Tooling take an overview of our customers’ entire production/manufacturing process. Tools are not just tools and quality of tooling is not just about how much you paid for it and how shiny and nice it looked when it came out of the box, it is more about its efficiency, effectiveness and overall economy,” he says. In a simple illustration of this point, Vivaldi has supplied a range of tools for various applications for use with the Superset NT – most commonly used are the straight knife blocks. Recommended was Vivaldi High Efficiency planer heads which have easy-to-change tungsten knives. One of the features that set these tools apart from others available on the market that would seem similar, is that the design incorporates a large streamlined gullet area which means more stock cab be taken off at one time. The knives last longer because the chip can escape which in turn means you get a better surface finish and there is less pressure on the head so the machine draws less power. So now instead of taking the blocks off once or twice a week to change the knives, with the Vivaldi system PDS turn the knives over about every six weeks. www.scmgroup.com

16 Installation Less than a year after starting to use Cabinet Vision daily, a furniture manufacturer says the software quickly became an integral and vital part of its design process by saving a considerable amount of time and effort, and will play a big role in its future growth plans.

Cabinet Vision future-proofs Jane Cheel Furniture Before commissioning Cabinet Vision, all Jane Cheel Furniture’s drawings were done with 2D CAD. “Every single line had to be drawn manually, which was extremely time-consuming,” says CAD draughtsman Robert Nagy, who was hired by the company in April 2018 because of his extensive knowledge of the software. “Jane Cheel recognised Cabinet Vision’s potential for growing the company through speeding up the process, meaning we have faster turnaround times and can take on more work. And we now include fully photo-rendered images with all plans, drawings and elevations that go to customers,” he continues. He says customers are pleasantly surprised when they see the rendered images showing what the furniture in their rooms will look like, with real colours. “It’s so realistic that it’s turning into a good sales tool for us.” Working mainly with timbers such as Oak and Walnut, along with veneered MDF boards and plywood, the five-year-old company currently cuts all its components with beam saws and manual drilling. But Robert says he is likely to invest in CNC machinery in the future, using Cabinet Vision’s powerful ScreenTo-Machine module to generate NC code to program it,” he says. While full kitchen kitouts are its core business, the company also manufactures some bathroom and living room furniture, along with dressing rooms, wardrobes and

FP302.indd 16

tables. “We now use Cabinet Vision for designing everything, including table components,” he says. As well as design, Cabinet Vision also produces essential cutlists for the shopfloor. “This is another big time-saver for us, as most full kitchen fitouts comprise between 30 and 40 separate pieces of furniture. And taking everything into account – sides, tops, bases, backs, shelves, and doors – the number of individual panels to be cut on the beam saw can run into the hundreds for each job.” Robert Nagy explains how creating cutlists fits into his daily routine with Cabinet Vision. “When I start working with the software on a new project, my first task is to ascertain what material we’re going to use, and ensure it’s in our Cabinet Vision material library. Then I check the cabinet sizes and texture required, before going into the modelling area and designing the individual pieces of furniture and the full room. It’s so beneficial simply being able to drag and drop similar sized cabinets into the job from the library, and parametrically edit them to the right size. “I generate cutlists via the Report Centre. They’ve been set up to suit our needs, so a click of a button and they’re printing. Previously, we had to prepare cutlists manually, by calculating the size and quantity of each of those individual parts.” It also helps the company estimate the amount of material it needs to order for the job.

“Overall, Cabinet Vision has made an impact on how we work at the moment in terms of speeding up our processes, meaning we’ve been able to take on new clients. And we’re already looking at how it can help in the future … not only with generating NC code when we invest in CNC machine tools, but I’m considering putting our prices into Cabinet Vision to create estimates and quotations with it,” he says. Robert Nagy is one of three

employees working directly with Cabinet Vision Ultimate, but as well as using it for design, he is also responsible for maintaining the cabinet and material libraries. Concluding, he says the gulf between 2D systems and Cabinet Vision can be likened to a notebook. “2D CAD is one page in the notebook. Cabinet Vision is the whole notebook.” www.cabinetvision.com www.janecheelfurniture.com

18 Installation The shop fitting industry is notoriously competitive, and when working with big names like Harrods, Selfridges, TopShop and Addidas, you need to be able to design and manufacture high quality products efficiently and within a short timeframe. To help achieve this, Hampshire-based commercial interiors specialist, Oakwood Shopfitting, has invested in its second Striebig vertical panel saw from machinery distributor, TM Machinery.

TM Machinery provides the right fit “Our vertical panel saw is the most used piece of equipment on our factory floor, running for up to 10 hours a day,” begins Steve Oliver, workshop manager at Oakwood Shopfitting. “We have between 12 and 14 joiners working on the floor at any one time and every single one of them favours the Striebig when cutting materials to size. “We even invested in a table saw in a bid to stop anyone waiting to use the vertical panel saw but with simple one-man handling and guaranteed accuracy, the Striebig is always the go-to machine in our workshop.” It’s this continual use and the company’s widening portfolio that has led to Oakwood Shopfitting replacing its 15-year-old Striebig ‘Compact’ with the very latest model. “The company has evolved in recent years, which has seen us build strong relationships with leading names in the commercial, retail, food and beverage sectors,” says Steve. “We’re not mass producers but we attract business because of our skill set and bespoke joinery offering. So, when faced with replacing our favoured wall saw in order for us to keep up to date with the latest technology, it was an easy decision to swap the existing Striebig with a like-for-like model.”

FP302.indd 18

The new Compact 5207 – which boasts a cutting size of 4600 x 2070mm and a cutting depth of 60mm – has been installed to work primarily with Perspex, Plywood, MDF and solid timber. Featuring a digital readout, the new addition continues to save the company time and money. Steve explains: “Whist the Striebig

comes with an upfront cost, it has paid for itself over a short period of time. A good example of this is the amount of skirting and architrave we produce with the saw. Many joiners would buy this from a merchant but because of the wide range of sizes we use and the sheer amount we need available to use, it’s considerably cheaper to

produce it on the Striebig.” It’s also changed the way the company works. “It’s hard to say what we did before we owned a Striebig because we now use it on every project we win,” says Steve. “From working on Prezzo and Chimichanga chains to Next clothing stories, the Striebig has an important role to play. Even when we make doors, we cut panel holes out of the design using the vertical panel saw. “Years ago, we used to route out holes, which took a lot of time and it relied on a very accurate eye. Now, we can cut straight out of the middle with minimal fuss. And, as we’re able to cut materials four metres long by two metres high, we’re never restricted by the machine’s capabilities.” Oakwood Shopfitting also takes advantage of TM’s servicing package. “We invest heavily in our machinery and in order for them to run smoothly and efficiently, we service every piece of equipment annually. TM’s engineers specialise in traditional woodworking machinery so they take care of our edgebander, table saw, cross cutter, spindle moulder, sander and planers. This extra care pays for itself over time. “Unlike other companies we’ve worked with, they know the machines inside and out and can help us with even the smallest of problems. Nine times out of 10, they can explain how to resolve a problem over the phone but if needed, they arrange an engineer to come out quickly. “That’s what makes TM Machinery stand out. They know how important it is to get a machine up and running quickly and efficiently. I have every confidence in TM’s sales and servicing team and couldn’t recommend the team or the Striebig brand enough.” 0116 271 7155 www.tmmachinery.co.uk Twitter @TM_Machinery

22 Installation Successful control room furniture manufacturer LundHalsey realised its production capacity was not keeping up with demand. Working with Biesse,’s experts, the Aylesbury manufacturer was aiming to significantly improve production throughput.

Biesse supports LundHalsey’s business growth driving a 50% manufacturing efficiency increase What if your business was a roaring success? From the outside, the order book is full but frustratingly from the inside, you’re finding it difficult to cope with that demand, maintain customer service standards and return a healthy profit. By combining the desire to prosper with the courage to radically change the way a company operates, business transformation has never been more meaningfully applied than at LundHalsey. Operating in the highly professional market of control room furniture, operations director, Rob Parker reveals: “We had a history of continuous growth, especially in export markets but we reached a point where we didn’t have enough capacity. Success was grinding us to a halt.” LundHalsey had to re-model the whole business and that began with the brave move to re-engineer its product. “We made the key decision to change from timber based products such as MDF and MFC to Compact Laminates, in an attempt to really hit the market with quality and style. The benefits were less space requirements, maximum quality and reductions in the volume of component parts and product variations. “Our drive for efficiency was focused on our ability to produce quickly. Using Compact Laminate, we could produce a finished

component in one operation, eliminating the need for secondary operations such as edgebanding.” “Working closely with Biesse to prove the processes and material viability, we purchased a nesting cell – a Rover A flat table CNC machining centre with loading and offloading tables – as well as a Winstore 3D K2 automatic board storage and retrieval system. “The results are astounding. We have seen an increase in efficiency of over 50%. Our team can’t believe what we can now achieve in terms of output. We’ve now transitioned from a highly skilled labour intensive operation to an assembly environment and we have re-deployed people to achieve those efficiencies. “Biesse’s bSolid software is also excellent – it does exactly what we want it to do and we now use that exclusively, saving around £45k in postprocessing software.” There were several other key factors in LundHalsey’s decision to choose a Biesse solution. “We’ve had a couple of Rover ATS machines for over 10 years,” Rob continues: “so Biesse’s reliability was a given. Total Care was also an influencing factor with the peace of mind that a five year warranty and service plan provides, especially now that the Rover A and the nesting process is business critical.

“However, I believe the main factor was that Biesse listened. They seem to work on the principle of ‘tell us what you want to achieve and we’ll help you to realise it’. The Winstore has been a revolution for improving the efficiency of our handling, storage and loading and we instantly saw the benefits when Biesse took us to one of their customer’s sites to see the

solution for ourselves. We now have scalability. “All in all the sales process was very consultative and installation was slick and professional, with excellent support. We’ve put a massive amount of effort into transforming our business and the knock-on effect has been tremendous. “Not only have we been awarded the Queens

Award for Enterprise in Export Growth, as 95% of our product is exported, but we are also proud to welcome customers to our new facility. In fact we obtained the contract for the Mercedes Motorsport control room because the environment here works on so many levels, especially with Biesse’s automated solutions.” www.biesse.com

26 Decorative Panels Woodgrains never go out of style, but is there a more cost-effective alternative to timber and veneer?

Woodgrains better than the real thing Colour trends tend to come and go year on year, but, as furniture manufacturers know, wood never goes out of style. Solid wood and veneers can be more costly than laminates and melamines, but the Feelwood range, from panel product expert Lawcris, bridges the gap as a popular alternative. Convenient and cost-effective, the Feelwood range represents a new generation of incredibly realistic wood replicas so convincing that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing. Superlightfast and incredibly durable, the Feelwood range requires no ongoing maintenance meaning it looks new for longer. Offering a more affordable pricepoint than solid timber or veneer, manufacturer Egger’s closed loop production cycle means these boards don’t cost the earth in more ways than one. Through effective waste management and recycling, Egger saves on average 1.56million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. Using synchronised pore technology – a patented technique that uses cameras to match the intricate knots and lines of the woodgrain décor with the pressed texture below – Egger has created a range of beautiful melamine products that will lend elegance and authenticity to any design. Available as single- or double-

sided MFC, with some decors available as worktops and laminate, Feelwood features six woodgrain structures (also known as textures), intricately created by Egger’s inhouse creative designers. 22 stunning décors create a selection of woodgrains that range from rustic to contemporary. Warm oak decors with authentically deep knots and cracks sit alongside more contemporary, cooler woodgrains such as ash and larch.

Lawcris also offers matching edging for every board, in a variety of thicknesses that can be cut to bespoke widths with its popular edge-slitting service. For an extra touch of authenticity, Lawcris offers

the impressive end-grain edging, giving the impression of sawn wood. The Feelwood range is available from the Lawcris website. www.lawcris.co.uk.

AkzoNobel passes testing industry standard with flying colours Blackburn-based AkzoNobel knows that an industry-recognised standard assessment which tests various common problems and challenges faced daily by its furniture lacquers is crucial in determining quality and longevity. In undergoing a Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) testing programme for a range of its products, AkzoNobel can provide an unbiased, holistic and pragmatic set of results. AkzoNobel has had some very positive results regarding FIRA testing on six of its most popular interior paint coating systems. In each product type, FIRA tested a clear and opaque system with the AkzoNobel products achieving a full house of six passes. The coating systems submitted for FIRA testing were based around three of AkzoNobel’s most popular and innovative systems: the Duracid Formaldehyde-Free Acid Catalysed Quantum and Aqualit systems. Duracid FF from AkzoNobel is a series of acidcuring products delivering high-quality results without the use of formaldehyde. It’s a system that’s formaldehyde-free, and isocyanate-free with no odour to the end user on either coated furniture or fittings. www.sikkens-wood-coatings.co.uk

surfaces such as high gloss and matt.” Hraniclean 08 comes in standard liquid containers, but also as a 600ml and 200ml aerosol to suit everyone’s needs. “The aerosol gives a better coverage and overall you use much less of it. Along with the Hranicloth they work harmoniously together to produce great work.” There is a full range of cleaners that Hranipex offers. The 01 and 08 are standard items, but there are also specialised cleaners for PUR glues, and seeing how much PUR use is growing within the industry these are a must for all PUR glue users. Within the range are also some granulate and cartridge-based cleaners for EVA and PUR glue pots. Peter comments: “By using the EVA or PUR cleaners it keeps the glue pot well maintained and can save a lot of money getting this replaced or refurbished in the future. We are happy to come along and demonstrate these cleaners where we can and give you all of the technical and safety data sheets so you have peace of mind that what you are using is right for your business.” For further more information on any Hranipex cleaning products, contact the local Hranipex area sales manager. 0121 767 9180 www.hranipex.co.uk

Zero glue line now for any bespoke panel shapes During the recent W Exhibition, Fen UK demonstrated the new HIT-M zero-glue line machine, which is ideal for applying edgebanding to both straight and shaped panels – without requiring any adhesive application whatsoever. According to Fen UKmanaging director, Felix Ney: “Thanks to the hot air injection technology, this machine can be used to apply laser co-extruded edging, or specially pre-coated materials quickly and easily. These edges are all readily available in the UK. It is a real step forward for edgebanding of more difficult shaped panels. And all at a realistic budget! “When considering that there is no need for a glue pot at all, which in the past, due to the very low feed speed required when applying tape to shaped panels, shape edgebanders have always been baking the adhesive in the machine, thus leading to degradation of the glue line and overall finish. “Thanks to the latest hot air injection technology, the edgebanding is heated and the tape materials flow easily into internal radii’s, without tape edges popping away again and leaving an unsightly gap after.” Felix continues: “The finish is superb and the bonding

FP302.indd 32

performance is first class, there is no comparison to tape edges applied by shape edgebanders using a glue pot design. “The new Hit-M is supplied with a very robust support table, allowing processing of angled pieces, too. Even panels with an angle up to 55° can be edgebanded very easily,

without any glue line and without any hassle. “The HIT-M can also be used as a portable edgebander, for example it is very handy to use when applying tape edges to bigger panels and even can be carried along onsite to quickly repair panel edges on site leaving a perfect finish.

“Heat up time is only 30 seconds, so the machine is always ready when needed. “When equipped with the option for extra thick panels, it is even possible to apply edging materials up to a height of 105 mm.” 01332 516557 www.fenuk.com

W Exhibition & Elements 2018 - final report 39

What a fantastic event! But don’t just take our word for it, read what a cross-section of exhibitors thought of the show of leads we’ve had from our latest software solutions for the interior design and furniture manufacturing market. So much so that we’ve booked an even bigger stand for 2020.”

Luke Thomson, MD, Intelligent Fixings: “The W Exhibition been completely off the scale for us. It’s surpassed any expectations we had. We’re a very new fixings company and we had originally decided to make 10 million components to start with but we’re now looking at producing between 50 to 80 million components because of the interest we’ve had at this show alone. It’s been unbelievable.” Matthew Applegarth, MD, Felder UK: “The show has been brilliant for us. We’ve sold almost every machine on our stand and at least two thirds of our showroom. We still have orders to work through and we’ve made some fantastic leads – this is what we have come to expect from exhibiting at the W Exhibition. Every year our stand is getting bigger because the return is there for us. In 2016 our stand was 600m2. We increased this number to 900m2 for 2018 and we have already provisionally booked over 1000m2 for 2020.” Matthew Glanfield, technical team manager, Blum UK: “There’s been a real buzz surrounding the show and the volume of visitors has been very satisfying. The Blum cinema was a rather abstract concept and one that was new to us but the whole concept has been really well received. It’s been a great way of getting visitors to learn about Blum and what we offer and, after watching our film, it has led to people talking openly with us about our products and how we can work together. It’s been a great success.” Andy Walsh, sales director, Daltons Wadkin: “This year the show was been reassuringly profitable for us when Brexit is looming. We’ve taken a new slant on stand design for 2018. We wanted to create a really eye-catching stand and visually it’s very appealing when faced with

a sea of machines. The light open space, trees, artwork and greenery on the stand have proven very welcoming and we’ve engaged with more people because of it. It’s been a superb show and we’re looking forward to 2020.” Gabrielle De Col, MD, SCM UK: “We’ve been really pleased with this year’s show and the feedback we’ve been given from visitors. Demand to see our latest machines and new digital system in action has been very high. We now have to collate the data and follow up on the success of the show.”

David Thompson-Rowlands, MD, RW Machines: “2018 has been a great show for RW Machines. From the initial build process through to the doors opening on day one, the organisation has been superb. We’ve experienced high quality visitors on our stand every day and as well as sales, we’ve got some fantastic leads. We’re already looking forward to 2020.” Steve Bulmer, MD of Biesse UK: “The show has been a great success for us this year and our decision to invest in a larger stand has been a good one. It’s been our best show ever. We were also immensely proud to win the Elements of Innovation Award for our VIET Opera R robotised sanding machine. We are also celebrating our 25th anniversary in the UK, so it’s been great to see both new customers as well as those that we have been working with since the UK subsidiary was founded.”

Matt Pearce, managing director, TM Machinery Sales: “The W Exhibition has always been an important event for us. Footfall on our stand has been continuously high throughout the show and the interest we’ve received on our range of Striebig vertical panel saws and ALKO dust extraction systems has been strong. We’re looking forward to the show being in new halls in 2020 and we’ve already booked our new stand space.”

Raffael Gomez, sales manager, Lamello AG: “This is the first year we have had a dedicated Lamello stand at the W Exhibition and it’s certainly paid off. Our team have been performing tool demonstrations continuously throughout the show because of the interest our joining systems have recieved from visitors. Lead generation has also been really strong and we look forward to exhibiting in 2020.”

Martina Schwarz, international sales and marketing manager, CAD+T: “We exhibited for the first time in 2016 and we had a great response from the UK market. This year, we have been blown away by the number

John Wilson, MD, Ferwood UK: “The show has been good for us. We’ve constantly been talking to customers – including some of the biggest names in the UK – so the calibre of visitors has been very high indeed.”

What some of the visitors had to say: Mick Barskyj, Jaguar Land Rover: “We are here with a specific aim and we are looking at products from the Elements side of the show to help with prototype development. The car manufacturing world is continually evolving, not only in the engines but also the aesthetic finish. The show is well laid out and everyone has been really informative.” Richard Carleton, Creative Event Support: “We are really enjoying the show. We work in live events and we are looking at CNC machines and edgebanders and the like that can help us create live stages and sets. This

FP302.indd 39

is our first time here. It was recommended by some carpenters we work with. They suggested that this was the only place to look for new equipment. There are not any shows specific to our industry that give us access to such a large range of machinery and equipment in one area.” Phil Dalton, group operations manager, Decorative Panels Group: “Not only do we get to see some excellent new machinery coming to market but the W Exhibition is a great opportunity for us to network with our customers, suppliers and fellow industry professionals.”

Book your stand soon... The W Exhibition and Elements 2020 will be taking place from the 27th-30th September at the NEC, Birmingham in halls 18, 19 and 20. Book your stand now, see overleaf.

40 W Exhibition & Elements 2018 - final report

It’s time to book your 2020 stand for the W Exhibition & Elements Think it’s too early to book your stand at the W Exhibition or Elements 2020? With half the space already booked, there’s never been a better time to reserve your stand at the UK’s only woodworking machinery and materials show, the W Exhibition and dedicated furniture components show, Elements. From the 27-30th September 2020, the W Exhibition will take place in halls 18, 19 and 20 of Birmingham’s NEC and it’s set to occupy almost 24,000m2. Some 50% of the floor space has already been sold but with 20% more available for 2020, there is still chance to sign up and present your products to the UK’s furniture design and manufacturing markets. Need a stronger incentive to book your stand? For 2020, there will be a new show format. Elements – dedicated to décors and edgings, surface trends, KBB components, hardware and materials – will have its very own exhibition hall and dedicated entrance. Co-located with its sister show, the W Exhibition, the pair provide the ideal platform to present your products and prototypes to over 9200 industry professionals. Keen to hear from the visitors themselves before confirming your stand? For open and honest opinions on the four-day event, why not check out independent show reviews, browse comments on social media and read 2018’s visitor feedback? Then you can make your booking in confidence, knowing that there is no better place to show machines or components in the UK. But we quick – once it’s gone, it’s gone! The W Exhibition and Elements Event Director, Lisa Campagnola adds: “We can already confirm that 50% of 2018’s exhibitors have re-booked their stands for 2020 as we continue to build on

FP302.indd 40

the show’s solid reputation in the industry.” Lisa adds, “The W Exhibition and Elements are the only events in the UK dedicated to the furniture design and manufacturing industry. Increased demand has seen us grow both shows for 2020 and with visitor numbers climbing year-on-year, the future of the two exhibitions has never looked stronger. We’ve had a surge of enquires from new companies looking to take advantage of the increased hall space and we urge potential exhibitors to get in touch to see how exhibiting could benefit their business.” For more information on exhibiting and booking your stand, contact Lisa Campagnola. 0207 886 3116 lisa.campagnola@ www.montex.co.uk

Help For Heroes raises over £1,200 at the show The W Exhibition and Elements official charity partner, Help for Heroes, has raised £1,217 at this year’s leading woodworking machinery and materials show and dedicated furniture components show. The charity, which offers support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses whilst serving our country, teamed up with the four-day event for a second time to promote awareness for its #TheForceForGood campaign and to raise money for its much needed woodworking shops and recovery centres. Dean Williams, Central England Area Fundraising Manager for Help for Heroes says, “I’d like to thank everyone for the immense support they gave us during the W Exhibition and Elements. The support received from the event organisers, exhibitors and visitors was overwhelming and together we raised £1,217 in donations. This is thanks to bucket collections and donations from our amazing Band of Brother craftsmen, sales of desk tidies and tool boxes plus

FP302.indd 42

raffles at the show. We’ve also had a huge amount of support for our Phoenix House woodshed and we’ve received offers of new tools, equipment and financial support. A special mention should also be given to Axminster Tools & Machinery for their loan of tools and lathes; Didac Training College and Trend for making and selling desk tidies and toolboxes on behalf of Help for Heroes plus Masterwood UK for raffling off a giant dinosaur at the show.” Dean continues, “When we talk about a ‘force for good’ this is what we mean. Everyone really pulled out all the stops to ensure Help for Heroes were extremely well represented. It really made our recovery team stand out and attracted visitors.” Lisa Campagnola, event director for the W Exhibition and Elements adds, “It has been a great honour to have Help for Heroes as our official charity for a second consecutive show. It’s been a privilege to meet some of the people whose hard work and dedication has made this happen and to promote the

amazing success stories that have come from the charity’s wood workshops and recover centres. To raise over £1,200 over four days has been a great achievement and we’re pleased to hear that more companies exhibiting and visiting the W Exhibition and Elements have now stepped forward to help the charity raise money in the future. A big thank you to all that took part.” The W Exhibition and Elements 2020 will be taking place from 27-30th September at the NEC, Birmingham. www.wexhibition.co.uk

44 Software TopSolid’Wood is an integrated CAD/CAM system that has dedicated design and manufacturing functionality for companies working in the furniture and joinery sector, meeting the needs of designers, manufacturers and subcontractors.

Design to manufacture in a 3D modelling environment The process of designing in TopSolid’Wood is to automatically build manufacturing technology into the individual parts and assemblies by adopting the design to build approach, therefore, saving time and errors between the drawing office and the workshop. Offering unlimited creativity, TopSolid’Wood is a system that provides the flexibility and parametric capability to design any component or assembly in a friendly 3D environment: automatically generating production documentation that lists hardware, material requirements and assembly documentation. Designs are based on the fittings of the largest manufacturers (including Blum, Hettich) and personalised libraries of parametric hardware and components, such as furniture and subassemblies. TopSolid’Wood offers flexible and parametric design capability in a 3D environment and there are no restrictions on materials, shapes and technologies during design. Using TopSolid’Wood, any change in the 3D model can result in the automatic updating of the 2D documentation and CNC programs. It also automatically generate production and assembly documentation which includes hardware and material requirements lists. TopSolid’Wood features advanced rendering via Redway and it collaborates with other CAD systems and has the ability to exchange data in both 2D and 3D formats, DXF, DWG, STEP, IGES and others. It also allows BIM IFC Import/Export and the ability to control machining centres from two to five axes.

FP302.indd 44

3D CAD for both mass production and custom joinery and furniture TopSolid’Wood allows users to produce complex projects with no restrictions on shapes or technologies. It also allows users to quickly create complex projects with a number of different design functions such as 2D sketch, free formations, and library items with related machining information There is a box construction wizard (free form), a connector wizard (moulding, cam and dowels, screws, mortise and tenon, lamellas), an edge creator, and it allows users to define multilayered elements (veneer board, veneers, edges). It also facilitates the preparation of photorealistic renderings of designs with the Redway 3D module. TopSolid’Wood can output DXF format files to other CAD/ CAM systems and

directly into the machine interface of the leading machine suppliers such as SCM/Xilog/Maestro, Homag/WoodWop and BiesseWorks/BSolid. Programming of CNC machine tools TopSolid’Wood, combined with the TopSolid’WoodCAM machining module, allows users to control CNC machines from leading machine suppliers This combination offers complete CAD/ CAM integration– the model is analysed and automated processes are performed, such as milling, drilling, pocketing, control of aggregates, saw cutting; and also control of 2.5D centres for milling, drilling, control of aggregates, suction heads and saw cutting. In this iteration, the CAD/CAM software provides three-axis fluid routing for sculpting and free-form machining. It also offers indexing routing of rotary axes, for drilling and milling on bevelled edges, at any angle. It is ideal too for complex machining in four and five continuous axis mode. During 3D machine simulation, the tool path can be viewed and checked. Tool collisions are also highlighted and the nesting of components for optimum use of boards also features. 07985 425739 www.cncsoftwaresolutions.co.uk

50 Sanding and finishing According to Gary Tuddenham, managing director of Parabola Workshops: “Quality is everything.” His company, founded in 2013, is a specialist furniture manufacturer, working predominantly with the superyacht industry and residential homes. Based just outside Carlisle and working with designers in London, his work comes in through recommendation.

Kündig sanding solution specified by workshop with high-end bespoke work “Our work is bespoke, one-offs: we very rarely do anything twice,” Gary explains. “We can be working on a project for up to three to four months on a single item.” To maintain the high standards of quality, Gary recently invested in a made-to-measure Kündig Uniq-S edge sander. Gary first saw the Kündig range of sanders at a W exhibition, at Birmingham’s NEC. The team from Parabola took full advantage of the opportunities at the show to view a wide range of woodworking machinery in action, including Kündig sanders demonstrated by Carl O’Meara of Kündig UK. Regarding the edge sander, Gary says: “We ummed and ahhed about it: then, after a visit to Carl at his showroom in Burscough, near Preston, we felt that we should definitely get the sander – it made

sense.” The edge sander provides significant production advantages. “We have machines that sand the faces of panels, but always spent a lot of time by hand sanding the edges. It just does not make sense when there are a lot of drawerboxes and carcasses. The Uniq-S takes the donkey-work out of everything: it is efficient.” Gary talk of choosing Kündig: “It’s because of the build quality and the reputation. There are a couple of other manufacturers that do a similar machine but it wasn’t quite the same. For the accuracy we were looking at the sander had to be built correctly, with tiny tolerances. It had to be a rigid quality machine. “It is very convenient. We have the edge sander in the hand workshop rather than the machine workshop. It is there when you need it, right next to the work benches.” While space was not an issue, Gary adds; “It is a nice compact machine.” Gary selected various options, including a grooved infeed platen to allow the sanding off of veneers that have been over laid after edging; a second transport belt to allow sanding of the ends of narrow panels; a two speed motor to allow finer grade abrasives to be used; a bobbin attachment allowing internal and external curves to be sanded; and a semi round table allowing the sanding of shapes using the rubber coated drive roller on the machine.

FP302.indd 50

The Kündig Uniq-S handles throughfeed sanding of small or large workpieces thanks to the integrated feed system, and can operate manually or with automatic feeding. With a table size of 1180mm x 325mm, the sander comes with two guide-pulleys for long workpieces. Pressure rollers hold the workpieces against the feed belt. The solid frame construction features heavy cast iron tables. The belt width is 150-200mm, and the belt length is 2000mm. The working level is approximately 830 mm on the sanding side and 900 mm on the side for veneer sanding. The net weight is 490 kg and the floor space required is 1150mm x 800mm. Asked if he would recommend the Uniq-S edge sander, Gary replies: “Yes, definitely. It does everything we expected it to do.” He added: “Carl is perfect: you can talk to him, no problem, and he will give you good advice.” 0845 833 0565 sales@kundig.co.uk www.kundig.co.uk

Homag Sprayteq S-100 – revolutionising surface finishing for the future Whether in the panel processing industry, door, window or stair market, produce flooring or interior fitting elements, Homag has the ideal solution for any business looking to completely transform their manual spraying process and step up into the world of automated painting and lacquering. As one of the latest additions to Homag’s product portfolio, the Sprayteq S-100 range was specifically designed with both small- and medium-sized companies in mind. Equipped with a reciprocating arm and four spray guns, these machines feature a fully automated vacuum conveyor belt to transport workpieces for ultimate flexible, throughput efficiency. The Sprayteq S-100 can be used as both a standalone spray machine or as part of an extensive finishing line. The integration of an automated paint application system ensures that a high quality finish is continuously achieved whilst reducing the amount of overspray waste, ultimately proving to be a true cost-saving investment for businesses. The cost efficiencies are also boosted via the Sprayteq’s intelligent workpiece detection system. A high resolution light grid accurately identifies the contours of each part, precisely controlling the paint flow of the individual spray guns. In the standard specification, the large

machine filters are easily accessible and replaceable for the simplicity of cleaning and general maintenance. This feature reduces the effort required from the operators in terms of the upkeep of the machine. In addition to this, the introduction of automatic spraying within production significantly increases the working conditions for employees. The Sprayteq S-100 can provide consistently high quality painting or lacquering for up to 2400 parts per shift therefore not only does it reduce paint exposure for operators but it also eases workload pressure produced when using a traditional manual paint applicator. Automated spraying with an added throughfeed alternative Enhancing the automated spraying application process further, the Sprayteq S-100 can be equipped with a complete throughfeed transport belt where workpieces are effortlessly fed into the spray booth on individual trays. Once the spraying process is complete, the parts continue to be conveyed out of the machine to the end of the belt. Especially designed to transport even the smallest of parts, this model widens the opportunity of production possibilities. Not only was this option developed to offer the market an efficient alternative to manual spraying but purposely built to require low

Sprayteq S-100 spray coating machine – consistent high quality finish

operating costs at an affordable investment level. Enhancing spraying technology with automated efficiencies Homag also offers an automated workpiece handling concept for the loading and unloading of parts. Based on the standard Sprayteq S-100 range of features, this model is capable of oneman operation. Using an innovatively-designed infeed system, components are gently guided into the spray booth. Once the spraying process is complete the parts are then reloaded back on the workpiece loading trolley. This concept provides an easy flexible and reliable finishing solution that requires low personnel and due to its compact design, low production space. The Sprayteq S-100 can be adapted and individually specified to meet the production demands of the manufacturer. Specific functions can be incorporated to the standard model to offer increased flexibility. Combining a two-way loading function provides uninterrupted operating cycles. Subsequently, this doubles the amount of workpieces within the machine, since one loading rack can be changed whilst the other batch is in operation. Furthermore, the largest of production volumes can be achieved on this Sprayteq model by doubling both the automated concepts of loading and unloading. The use of a two-way loading function at both sides of the machine delivers an almost ‘self-sufficient’ concept, significantly increasing efficiency in production. Success flows in automated finishing Already proving to be a roaring success within the market, Homag has completed a number of installations and is continuously receiving a high level of enquiries for the new automated spraying solution. Opening up the possibilities for cost-effective automatic spraying technology to all levels of industry, the Sprayteq range can be coupled with flexible payment plans from Homag Finance making these machines more affordable than ever. Q&A Pete Sartain, national sales manager, Mirka UK We talk to Mirka’s abrasives expertabout the company’s outlook for 2019 and the issues, challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

How has 2018 been for Mirka and what are its plans for 2019? It’s been a great year, with double digit growth. We’ve launched some innovative tools and abrasives, which, combined, provide effective solutions for our wood sector customers. In 2019, we have further plans to launch new tools and abrasives in quarters 2/3, Our continuous new product development will enable us to maintain our status as a market leader. What are the key trends that they see leading the way in the wood sector? There appears to be higher investment in machinery to increase production and provide a dust-free environment for the workforce, and a greater emphasis on quality rather than quantity in products. The UK manufacturers cannot compete with foreign imports and therefore the product portfolio has changed to a much higher level of craftsmanship. Why was the training centre brought online and what benefits will it bring to customers? We understand that the sectors we work in are constantly evolving in terms of the processes and products required to improve production, output and profitability, whilst still reducing cost and waste. As a brand, training is essential for our customers to achieve this, so to take our onsite customer training to the next level we made the

decision to invest in our own training centre. We look forward to ensuring those users who come through our doors will leave knowing they have developed and learned new skills and techniques that will assist them in their jobs and enable their companies to expand their business opportunities. What areas of the wood sector will Mirka be potentially looking to supply new solutions to? We perceive bespoke manufacturers of kitchens

Iridium collection

FP302.indd 54

07/12/2018 14:33

55 and bedrooms to be on the increase and will develop tools and abrasives to assist in what is a multiple array of applications, eg doors, worktops etc.

Mirka Iridium, DEOS 81x133 mm

What issues in the wood sector have been brought to Mirka’s attention and how have/ looked to solve them? Dust control is still at the forefront for many customers and we continue to develop tools and abrasive solutions to assist with health & safety regulations. HAV (Hand Arm Vibration) is again a key factor when purchasing tools and Mirka is leading the way in the development of technology to monitor vibration using its Bluetooth connectivity and MyMirka App. What is Mirka’s plans for wide belts in 2019? We will continue to promote our Ultimax range of wide-belts, which for many is still new technology and resolves many of the issues that arise during the sanding process. Further development of our film range of belts for lacquer finishing will take place during 2019 as the machine manufacturers sell more widebelt sanders for lacquer sanding. What were the key takeaways from the recent W Exhibition? Finally, customers are acknowledging that the way to provide cost downs is not to buy the cheapest product. Products that cut quicker and last longer with additional health benefits are a key part of saving time which for many is the biggest saving to be made. Can Mirka UK safeguard itself when it comes to Brexit and any of the eventual outcomes? As with many companies, the outcomes of Brexit are multiple and we cannot plan for every eventuality. However, we are

confident that with the plans we have in place we can continue to provide an A1 service to our customers whatever the outcome. Has Brexit affected the wood sector or has it been business as usual? It would be fair to say customers are a little cautious about committing for the future. That said, Mirka is growing in what might be termed a stagnant market. Has Mirka seen more companies come to them asking for solutions to be created for specific jobs within the wood sector? We continually liaise with our customers both in the UK and our colleagues in Finland

to create solutions that are led by demand and not what we perceive to be required. I also think that listening to what the customer wants and developing solutions that meet their expectations has driven Mirka’s continued success over the years. How will the training aid the development of new processeses? It’s important to our brand that every customer touch-point is of a high quality and our training centre will enable us to train all our distributors on Mirka products and processes to ensure that they are giving a consistent message and experience to the market place. www.mirka.com

Family business Trade Mouldings has been a household name in the UK’s furniture industry for years. After working with Dutch dust extraction company Modesta since 2013, the Cookstown, Northern Ireland firm recently opted for a new filter system.

Trade Mouldings raises capacity while saving energy with new Modesta filter

“The biggest challenge was finding the correct place for the new filters, keeping the old ones running and then moving everything without disruption to production”

59 The latest addition to Trade Moulding’s collection of Modesta filters is currently being installed; the respected kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturer needed a complete system, including dust extraction, piping, filters and of course installation on site. “It was a joint effort,” says director Austin Mac Oscar, “there was an existing system in place, but once we had seen the improvement the initial installation had made, we decided to upgrade the remaining systems.” Trade Mouldings was also happy with the minimal period of downtime needed to install and get the new system running. “The biggest challenge was finding the correct place for the new filters, keeping the old ones running and then moving everything without disruption to production.” Modesta came up with a solution so as to keep machinery going so production could continue, “ explains Austin, “we lost just one day of production, but we knew it was coming. Now

“The installed dust extraction capacity at Trade Mouldings has increased by 60% to 500kWh in the past years, while the anticipated total energy consumption of the filter installation will drop which is a great benefit”

all we have to do is switch the piping to the new filters and remove the old one.” Two new chain filters had been installed seven months ago and the results were that efficiency, cleanliness and energy use in the factory all improved. The workforce is also happy about the new system: thanks to the more efficient set-up, maintenance engineers have less to worry about, and workers are happy having a dust-free working environment that makes their job easier. Austin says: “Modesta is easy to work with, supplies a good system and installs it with very little disruption. I’d recommend that other factories put them at the top of their lists.”

“The installed dust extraction capacity at Trade Mouldings has increased by 60% to 500kWh in the past years, while the anticipated total energy consumption of the filter installation will drop, which is a great benefit,” points out Wyboud Kloppenburg, director of Modesta. “We achieve energy savings like these by using cascading fans driven by our ECO system, built into every filter by default. This allows Trade Mouldings to manufacture reliably, saving tens of thousands of pounds annually on energy while growing to meet future needs.” +44 113 8680 247 www.modestafilters.co.uk

Bringing together a wealth of industry knowledge, skills and experience, the DCS Group of companies provides the UK woodworking sector with a ‘one-stop-shop’ for wood waste extraction and fume control equipment, spray booths and paint finishing systems, energysaving extraction optimisation technologies, bespoke process control panels and cabinets, as well as ongoing support through comprehensive maintenance and LEV testing programmes. “The reputation that DCS has achieved in this industry has been earned by our desire to provide the most efficient solution, both technically and commercially, for any dust or fume extraction problem,” says managing director Philip Oldfield, “and we are able to offer solutions that are tailored to meet the specific needs of our individual customers; whether it’s for a small standalone spray booth or a mobile dust extraction unit, a complete paint finishing system or a turnkey waste-to-energy installation, we have the necessary resources within the DCS Group of companies.” Andy Hives, sales director at DCS, adds: “Although we are proud to be the sole UK distributor for Schuko, one of Europe’s leading extraction technology experts, the DCS Group’s commitment to providing the most cost-effective and efficient system for any given application means that we also partner with renowned global manufacturers such as Nederman, Donaldson and Camfill.”

This Schuko Ecovar Validus filter, installed by DCS for fit-out specialists Cardinal Group, provides an airflow capacity of 47,000m3/hr.

Examples of installations designed and commissioned by DCS, Ecogate and Gallito feature regularly in this magazine, and the Group’s client list includes many well-known and respected furniture manufacturers. In fact, whatever the manufacturing process, there will almost always be a previous installation that can be referenced to demonstrate the capabilities available from the DCS Group of companies to provide a bespoke extraction solution to fulfil the customer’s brief – C W Fields & Son, industry leading manufacturer of high performance doors; Event Prop Hire, the UK’s premier manufacturer and supplier of themed props and accessories; and leading retail and contract kitchen furniture manufacturer Omega PLC, are just a small selection of the many companies continuing to benefit from a DCS Group installation. It’s now eight years since DCS introduced Ecogate® energy-saving technology to the UK,

As part of an impressive installation undertaken for C W Fields & Son, DCS installed three PowerMASTER variable speed drive units to control the main fan sets and three Ecogate greenBOX 12 controllers which can monitor extraction on up to 36 individual machines

and this proven ‘Extraction-on-Demand’ system has been reducing energy costs for customers ever since. Equally suitable for use on new or for retrofit installations, Ecogate continuously adjusts extraction fan speeds, in real-time, to match machine usage – dramatically reducing electricity consumption and typically generating savings of at least 50% off extraction system running costs. A more recent addition to the group’s technology portfolio is the XS Automation brand of control panels and cabinets. The company designs, manufactures and installs bespoke process controls for a multiplicity of industrial applications ranging from basic panels to advanced controllers – including HMI panels and Programmable Logic Controllers, as well as programming and remote telemetry. Gallito has been designing and manufacturing spray booths for joinery and furniture manufacturers for over 40 years but, as managing director Mark Carson explains: “Over the last couple of years we have dramatically expanded the manufacturing side of the business and, as well as dry filter and water wash spray booths, paint mix rooms, ovens and drying rooms that we have been known for in the past, we now manufacture the FastClip Ductwork System – an extensive range of high quality, clip-fit extraction ductwork and accessories.” The company manufactures ductwork sections up to 710mm in diameter, using high quality, smooth and durable galvanised steel, and all FastClip components have rolled edges, allowing sections to be simply clipped together; reducing initial assembly time for new installations, and facilitating cost-effective reconfiguration to accommodate changing extraction requirements. 0800 040 7116 www.dcslimited.co.uk

All galvanised panels for Gallito spray booths and enclosures are laser cut to size, then folded and formed to give a perfect fit and seal. This imposing two-storey construction includes nine individual enclosures with a total floor space of around 800m2

Air Plants installs upgraded extraction to cope with Hill’s Panel Products’ growing workload Hill’s Panel Products was formed in 1991 with the sole aim of supplying components to the furniture industry. Since that time, both the company and product range have expanded greatly to cover a huge range of full and processed sheet material, vinyl wrapped furniture doors and furniture fittings. Although the original area of operation was Greater Manchester, this has expanded greatly to include virtually the whole country and it remains Hill’s Panel Products’ ultimate goal to be the best supplier in the furniture industry. Hill’s Panel Products employs 220 staff and now has more than 200,000ft2 of floor space across two sites. Continued investment means its production processes use the latest technology, offering quality manufactured products in short lead times. Hill’s Panel Products asked

renowned Leicester-based Air Plants Dust Extraction to replace the company’s original cyclone system for a larger one, due to the increase in workload. The new cyclo filter with high efficiency, low noise fans handles

Big savings for Big Production House since purchasing a wood waste heater Sutton Coldfield-based company, Big Production House, creates bespoke stages, stands, catwalks and other event, festival and exhibition display solutions. Whilst the business tries hard to minimise its wood waste, there is inevitably a large amount created, and MD at Big Production House, Gordon King was understandably keen to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Gordon explains: “We realised that purchasing a wood waste heater could solve our wood waste disposal problem whilst also helping solve the issue of our freezing cold workshop, which is like working in an icebox in winter.” Situated on an old industrial estate, the freezing temperature in the brick-built workshop was uncomfortable for the team to work in during the winter months. The cold also caused issues with production, when the wood was

damp or if it was too cold for the paint to dry. After some research, Gordon contacted Kurt Cockroft, managing director at Wood Waste Technology. The company ordered a WT15 heater, which Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers installed earlier this year. The investment has made many positive differences to the business. The wood waste heater keeps the workshop warm, even on really cold days, and the business is also saving money on skips. Instead of ordering a new skip every two weeks, one skip can now last up to two months, as all the wood waste can be burned in the heater. Gordon explains: “We’ve been very impressed with the heater, plus the service we’ve received and the benefits we’ve experienced. The heater is very easy to use, and the team at Wood Waste Technology

has made it a completely hasslefree process for us. We’re thrilled with our purchase, and, being a UK manufacturer ourselves, we especially like the fact that all Wood Waste Technology’s heaters are manufactured in the UK.” Kurt says: “We’re delighted that the wood waste heater is helping the Big Production House reduce its waste disposal bills and get free heating in the workshop. We have many event and exhibition companies interested in wood waste heaters, due to the amount of waste wood these industries naturally create.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all

types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various sizes and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

Woodtech Joinery can now better manage its heavy loads In 2016, Palamatic received an enquiry from Woodtech Joinery in Middlesbrough. The company needed help lifting boards and doors in two different areas in its workshop. In the saw shop they were lifting up to 5.4m panels weighing up to 200kg which required rotating 90° on to its sides. In the door shop, they were lifting doors weighing up to 100kg, and once again needed to rotate these doors 90° as part of its processing procedure. Upon receiving the enquiry, Palamatic arranged a site visit to take a closer look at the area and the product to be handled. This visit gave us a better understanding of Woodtech Joinery, how they operated and how we could integrate into their workshop without compromising the space they were working in, alongside solving their manual handling problem.

FP302.indd 65

Space was the trickiest thing to deal with as the fully-functioning workshop had quite a low ceiling. This can be enough to put off some vacuum lifting suppliers, but Palamatic was confident it could find a way to deal with it. To successfully rotate the boards and doors, and to meet Woodtech’s desired lifting heights, Palamatic needed to find a way to work with the low headroom in the area. The Chesterfield-based handling solutions provider created a answer to this by engineering a raised bridge beam H-style gantry which allowed the vacuum lifters to run above the main gantry rails – this gave Woodtech the full area coverage it needed as well as the ability to rotate the panels. Palamtic says it revisited Woodtech Joinery in July and was lucky enough to talk to one of its operators and take some videos and photos of

the system in use. Their operator made using the door-turner look second nature to him. He had worked for Woodtech for many years told us of the daily struggles he encountered before, and how happy he is now that he can carry out his job without the strains of heavy manual lifting. R&J Machinery – an expert in second hand panel processing machinery The team at R&J Machinery travels far and wide to source what it describes as the best quality second-hand machinery suitable for a wide variety of applications and end-users. “When purchasing our second-hand stock, we ensure the machines are in good condition, fresh and suitable for our customers,” explains sales manager Gerald King. “Our experienced buyer carefully inspects each machine for signs of wear that could be detrimental to the machine’s functionality. If the machine is not suitable, it’s simple – we don’t buy.” Following the agreed purchase of the machine, the experienced R&J Machinery engineering team is sent in to decommission and remove the machine. “Efficient and professional removal means minimum disruption for the seller and ensures that the machine is correctly removed and carefully prepared for transport,” points out Gerald. “Once the machine arrives back in our facility our skilled engineers are able to clean, run, service and test the machine ensuring it is in full working order prior to sale. Once the machine has been delivered to its new customer we can commission and give the operators full training and support in the operation of their new machines. “We stock a wide range of beam saws, CNC machining centres and edgebanders. We also have the capability to source machines from our partners if there is a particular machine that we don’t have in our current portfolio. We look forward to receiving your valued enquiries.” 01455 840224 enquiries@rjmachinery.co.uk www.rjmachinery.co.uk

Camco reinventing the plywood look PVC plywood-effect edgebanding has been in the market for a long time. It imitates the edge of a plywood board and transfers that effect onto a particleboard. “At Camco, we have improved the current PVC plywood edgebanding to get a more realistic effect on melamine boards,’ explains Camco sales manager, David Phillips. “We offer a traditional plywood PVC edgebanding that imitates the edge of real plywood made of wood. Our collection also includes PVC edgebanding with metallic colours: copper and aluminium. “All of our references are perfect to create contrast with plain-coloured melamine, wood, marble or concrete designs,” says David. “Customers can find this product in different versions. These references are available with soft or embossed textures, with different grades of gloss and with two directions of the grain.” Camco’s PVC plywood edgebanding is available ex-stock in 0.8mm thickness – other thicknesses upon request. 0289 264 6688 www.camco.uk/edging

What about OSB? Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is a man-made product created from poplar or from yellow pine wood bits, which are pressed and bound together by adhesive resin and glue. This modest material is mostly used as a substrate during construction projects, leaving other materials to stand in the limelight. Some prefer prettier laminates, but others have managed to use OSB as an alternative and visible material for superb modern furniture design. From flooring to wall décor and everything in between, unfinished OSB is the latest trend in modern interior design circles. The unfinished look takes advantage of the rich texture and pattern that OSB provides to add a little flair. Plus it’s cost-effective and

eco-friendly. Is it for you? No doubt, OSB is a unique material that has its place in many décor styles. That’s why Camco has created OSB edgebanding: 0.8 mm thickness PVC, three versions are available: smooth, rough embossed and high gloss. From now on, it is possible: – to edgeband a plain coloured melamine in a non conventional way, creating designs which are rich in contrast – the OSB inlay banding products will compliment any decorative panel – to edge band OSB panels, so that the panel will look as close as possible to a piece of hardwood lumber – simply add the OSB look to your designs www.camco.uk/edging

NBF announces policy on mattress and components reuse and sets 10 year recycling goal of 75% The National Bed Federation (NBF) has published its first policy document on the use and sale of used mattresses, components and materials. The policy aims to provide guidance on best practice, based on current processes. Simultaneously the NBF, the trade association for UK manufacturers of mattresses and beds and their component suppliers, is also publishing a report commissioned earlier this year from environmental expert Oakdene Hollins, looking into recycling rates of mattresses by component part and announcing an ambitious goal of 75% diversion from landfill of old mattresses by 2028. “Oakdene Hollins has been working with the NBF on measuring mattress recycling rates since 2014 but we realised breaking it down into component parts would give us more insights,” explains NBF president Tony Lisanti. The report indicates that of the currently estimated 15-20% of mattresses that are diverted from landfill to recyclers, 96% of spring units, 85% of foams, 42% and 31% of polyesters and woven textiles respectively and zero non wovens are being recycled, but it also confirms that both 4% of spring units and 5% of foam are being sold on for re-use – in many cases back to the bed trade – supporting the NBF’s belief that a policy was needed. Says Tony Lisanti: “Finding markets for the component parts of used mattresses is one of the challenges we need to overcome if we are to succeed in our goal of seeing 75% diverted from landfill by 2028. But the solutions must be acceptable to all concerned and certainly not deceive buyers or jeopardise their health and safety. “We also felt clear guidance was needed to address the returns from today’s increasingly popular comfort trial guarantees. There is a challenge to distinguish between mattresses of unknown origin or age and those which are more easily identifiable as returns on the

FP302.indd 70

back of comfort trials.” The NBF policy attempts to address what the federation believes should be a best practice approach with regard to fitness for purpose and compliance with health and safety requirements. The policy seeks, at the very least,

for any re-usage of components to be clearly declared. “The more information a supplier can give, the better,” says Tony Lisanti. “Consumers have no way of knowing if that used spring unit is one month, one year or 20 years old. We also understand

that ‘clean’ foam is in some cases being cut out of larger pieces for use in smaller mattresses. But currently there is no way that foam can be guaranteed to pass either flammability or cleanliness requirements.” The policy also proposes fillings that have gone through a remanufacturing process which involves appropriate cleaning, testing or mixing with other materials – and could hence be described as a new material – do not need to be identified as containing used components (unless the supplier deems it desirable from a marketing perspective!). The new policy will form part of the next phase of the NBF’s Code of Practice – which since its introduction in 2014 has included requirements for cleanliness of fillings. “We are simply extending the current policy to clarify its application to used spring units and used mattresses as well as fillings,” says Tony.. “Our goal is not to ban their re-use or resale – but to ensure it is done in a responsible way and with full transparency for the buyers of these products.” The NBF’s target of 75% diversion from landfill by 2028 has been proposed by the federation’s Circular Economy Committee, after close consideration of the current recycling rates by the industry and local authorities. “Since we started measuring the rates of mattress recycling in 2014 we have seen the level fluctuate considerably, as companies capable of processing mattresses for recycling have come and gone” says Tony. “We believe the proportion has increased in the past couple of years – our new report, due out at the end of the year should confirm that – but considerable joint effort by the bed and waste industries, local authorities and policy makers will be required to reach our goal in the next 10 years. The NBF is more than happy to continue to be a catalyst to make that happen.” www.bedfed.org.uk

AMS to support two charities this Christmas Advanced Machinery Services (AMS), one of the leading suppliers of service and machinery to the woodworking industry, will collaborate with two charities from Leicestershire this Christmas, helping them with Christmas-themed wooden items and financial donations. Everybody knows that Christmas is a wonderful period when everybody is happier and excited, especially

children. Unfortunately, not all children have the same opportunities. With that in mind, AMS wanted to support them and give them encouragement in this festive period and open the door to new possibilities. One of the charities is Nether Hall school in Leicester. The aim of the school is to deliver education of the highest quality possible to children with learning difficulties by offering a wide range of motivating learning opportunities. AMS is going to give them hundreds of AMS Christmas wooden reindeers made at the AMS showroom in Skeffington to sell at Christmas and raise money for the charity. The second charity is Rainbows, a hospice for children and young people in Loughborough. It welcomes referrals from

young people who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. AMS is going to sell its Christmas wooden present and the money it collects will be presented to the charity. An AMS director says: “Everybody deserves a good Christmas, and if we can contribute our bit, we will do it. Our marketing manager

suggested to my partner and I that we could collaborate with these charities; we thought that it was a fantastic idea straight away. “The AMS team wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year full of new opportunities, happiness and dreams.” 0844 844 9949 www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

Operational efficiency with low profile packaging machine With product demand rising and the emphasis on efficient practice increasing, businesses are striving for the ultimate packing operation to maximise their return. When it comes to the pick, pack and despatch process, palletising goods can be a deal breaker in terms of efficiency for the warehouse and in transit. Employee-owned business, Kite Packaging, has introduced a new low profile range of machines to allow for a swifter pallet wrapping operation. The Masterplat and Rotoplat ranges, offer reliability thanks to their lowered, patented, disk rolling system that makes manoeuvring products onto the machine more straightforward. Each model comes with a ramp which fits around the machines turntable, enabling high flexibility and space saving when loading warehouse goods thanks to the possibility of access from every side on a reduced slope. Another useful feature of the low profile machines is their 60%

FP302.indd 72

reduced thickness which minimises frequent accidental bumps caused by forklift trucks. Kite’s team also has access to R connect, a revolutionary monitory system which connects to the machines, enabling complete control of machine operation and support to the customer. This pioneering innovation can be installed directly to the machine or installed at a later date, allowing the end user to see how efficient their machine and film are operating. These efficiency boosting systems can help businesses monitor and reduce waste and costs www.kitepackaging.co.uk Kite Packaging has introduced new low profile additions to its machine range – the Rotoplat LP708 (right) and the RotoPlat 508 (inset)

Keeping an eye on value for money the company commissions worldwide and manages the entire build and delivery process. “We’re in the business on being on our customers’ side,” he says, “and we’re proud of our ability

to understand precisely what’s required, suggest ideas and source the right equipment. That means our customers are best placed to achieve a return on their investment. Their success is our success.” The new range of CNC routers is the most flexible, and robust, in ATA’s arsenal of woodworking machines. Recommended for businesses producing a wide range of wood and other products, (metal, plastics and composites), ATA’s CNC routers come in both standard and bespoke specifications. Likewise, ATA’s popular Castle Pocket routers are known for reliability and flexibility. Used widely by kitchen and bathroom fabricators, these machines

represent excellent value for money and are also ideal for retail display and interiors fabrication. To ensure customers’ machines are kept working for their keep, ATA stocks a comprehensive range of solid carbide, HSS and carbide tipped router cutters. thickness, and is available in both permanent and knock-down versions. It is also compatible with leading high-end materials, such as high pressure laminates, composite material and solid woods. Ovvo was also displaying a PantoRouter, in collaboration with the woodworkers workshop –

www.woodworkersworkshop.co.uk. The PantoRouter is a precision copy-milling machine able to cut a wide variety of wooden joints. Designed with the mechanical linkage of a pantograph in mind, the PantoRouter operates in all three axes. Other than the positioning of the workpiece on the X and Y axis, users can set the exact plunge depth of the router cutter on the Z axis, making the PantoRouter a

highly versatile jointing machine. The PantoRouter uses templates, which allow users to accurately trace tenons, dovetails, distances, drilling patterns, or free-hand contours and easily replicates the milling needed to rout out and use the Ovvo connnection system. New cordless impact drivers from Bosch for professionals Flexible and efficient in confined spaces and hard-to-reach areas is what the new 18V cordless impact drivers from Bosch Professional stands for. Bosch says its GDR 18V-200 C Professional and GDX 18V-200 C Professional have the best performance-to-size-ratio compared to competitor models in the same category. Both tools have a maximum torque of 200Nm and feature short head lengths of 126 or 147mm respectively. Therefore, they are more powerful and compact than their predecessor models, and are designed for all connections in installations and in metal and wood work. In this area, they offer considerable advantages over cordless screwdrivers. The cordless impact drivers tighten common screws of size 6 x 60mm faster, and also work recoil-free – the torque at the bit or screw is decoupled from the handle. Installers, carpenters or scaffolders can therefore operate the tools conveniently with one hand. This is particularly an advantage when working in small or confined spaces. The cordless impact drivers differ by their toolholders, the new generation of the Bosch GDX 18V-200 C Professional also has a combined hexagon/square toolholder where both screwdriver bits and nutsetters can be used, increasing the versatility of this tool.

The app also enables repair orders to be sent faster, anytime, anywhere. Connected power tools and services from Bosch Professional provide the user with added value.

Connectivity for easy personalisation and maintenance Both the GDR and GDX 18V-200 C Professional and the 18V-200 C Professional can be adjusted by the Bosch Toolbox app via Bluetooth to users’ personal settings. This includes functions such as soft start that enables a particularly wellcontrolled and precise tool positioning when screwing in wood. Maintenance has also become easier, tradespeople can receive information about the status of their tool straight to their smartphone.

Fast and efficient screwdriving – with pre-set speed settings Both cordless impact drivers have three pre-set speed settings meaning tradespeople can now work faster, and more efficiently. The preselected speed minimises the risk of over-tightening and snapping screws. The first setting is designed for small screws, the second for medium and the third for large screws. This corresponds, to driving screws in sheet metals, wooden boards and metal profiles. Further control is provided by the accelerator switch, which regulates the power individually. Both models are equipped with brushless motors for a longer lifetime and are operated by powerful 18V lithium-ion batteries. Those who place a value on light weight with a high output can turn to the new compact high-performance battery ProCORE18V4.0Ah. With to new highercapacity cells, it is single-layered and is thus considerably smaller and more compact than the two-layered standard battery with 4.0Ah. www.bosch-professional.co.uk

Mighton broadens its sash security offering To many people, changing the clocks at the end of October signals the onset of cosy evenings, comforting casseroles and months of Saturday night singing. But the various upcoming festivities can also mean empty houses containing expensive gifts, and darkened evenings during which it’s easier not to be seen. Amongst everything else, it’s the perfect time of year for burglars. Launched back in January, the Mighton Security Range complements beautiful sash window units with affordable, specialist hardware that would challenge even the most determined intruder. Many of the products were existing offers, the launch bringing the entire selection together and promoting it as a complete range catering for all security needs. Now, Mighton Products is announcing the addition of two further items: Securibead Plus and the Latching Sash Lift. The Securibead Plus is affixed

to the window frame with Torx screws, an additional safety feature in itself due to the irregular shape of the screw head. Unlike traditional timber parting beads, its metal components prevent it being levered off with force. It also forms part of a larger SBD (Secured by

Design) kit. The Latching Sash Lift is operated from the inside of the property and features a spring-loaded lock, which automatically secures the window on closing. Both products meet the expectations of customers who are looking to modernise their homes,

as chairman of Mighton, Mike Derham explains: “With so much choice available to consumers who are quite literally ‘window shopping’, it is vital that we can provide them with an all-round service, which includes options for enhanced security. Timber frame units are a conscious aesthetic investment – now we can match the high quality preferences of our customers with the Mighton Security Range. Products like the Angel Ventlock system have been enormously successful in preventing children from getting out – these new additions are designed to stop people getting in.” The products are all SBD approved and meet PAS 24:2016 requirements, an accreditation that not only ensures they meet the minimum UK enhanced security performance standards, but through testing, means they are suitably wet weather- and draughtproof. 0845 0945 215 www.mightonproducts.com
