Comment Just exactly what the furniture and joinery landscape will resemble from April onwards remains to be seen, but I would venture that all forward-thinking businesses have executed policies to protect their interests and safeguard their trading options should we Brexit with no deal later this month. As I write, these are the options our politicians are grappling with: May’s deal; delay for 21 months; shoe-in another EU referendum; a general election )which would need a no-confidence vote in the PM); MPs could wrestle the Brexit process from the Government; or the grim spectre of a no-deal Brexit.

John Legg Editorial director Most businesses will agree that a no-deal scenario must be avoided, and thankfully the will for this outcome in parliament appears to be fairly subdued. Hopefully a common-sense pathway will emerge as April dawns – but it would be foolish to assume that there will any winners in the short-term. Clarity would be victory. More positively, Iast month I was invited to Rimini, Italy, to experience first-hand what factories of the future might look like at SCM’s Smart&Human Factory presentation at the company’s impressive, new Technical Centre. I have to say, I was very impressed with SCM’s event which demonstrated a clear assertion of the Italian firm’s vision moving forwards. Throughout the event, continuous the SCM team showed how to realise more efficient performance from rank and file machines enhanced with intelligent systems and software along with help from three levels of complimentary robotic solutions – it was something to behold. Read about SCM’s visionary event on p8. Elsewhere, we look at the current crop of products and ideas in decorative panels, surfacing and coatings, as well as updates, new products and installations. I hope you enjoy the issue – for further updates, refer to the website, subscribe to our email newsletter, or follow me on Twitter. Alternatively, one could write a good, old-fashioned letter...

Filtermist adds DCS Group to its portfolio Industrial air filtration and extraction specialist Filtermist International has successfully completed the acquisition of the Yorkshire-based DCS Group of companies. The DCS Group, which has a site in Dewsbury and one in Wetherby, collectively acts as a designer, supplier, installer and commissioner of fume and dust extraction systems. This is the largest acquisition to date for Filtermist which is based in Telford, Shropshire and part of the Swedish Absolent Group. Previous acquisitions include customised air movement and air pollution control systems specialist Multi-Fan Systems in 2016 and dust filtration systems manufacturer Dustcheck Ltd in 2017. Founded over 30 years ago, the DCS Group now consists of a number of specialist enterprises including DCS Ltd which has an established reputation for providing quality dust extraction systems for customers in a number of industries, including pharmaceutical and woodworking – two key markets identified by Absolent Group as offering substantial potential for global growth. “This latest deal is designed to significantly enhance Absolent

Group’s presence in the dust and fume extraction market,” comments Filtermist International CEO, James Stansfield. “We have extremely ambitious targets over the next five years and increasing our presence in all of our market sectors is a key strategic objective. We will be combining the strengths of all Filtermist International companies to offer all of our customers a complete solution for air extraction and filtration. “From initial recommendations and project management services, to equipment manufacture and supply, installation, commissioning and after-sales support – we offer a full turnkey service for customers that need to ensure the air is free from a wide range of contaminants.

Bristol Forklifts awarded FLTA audit compliance Bristol Forklifts has been presented with the FLTA audit compliance certificate following a successful on-site assessment. Beginning in April 2017, the audit reviewed 100 criteria, including safety, health and environmental procedures. “The process was very thorough, and we learnt a lot from the FLTA,” said Ian Mounce, general manager of Bristol Forklifts. “The FLTA certificate will benefit us and our customers as it brings piece of mind, and ensures a uniformity in the processes that we adhere to.”

“Traditionally Filtermist has been known for its oil mist extraction capabilities – the acquisitions we have made so far mean that as a company we are now able to offer dust and fume extraction, VOC abatement, odour control, solvent recovery and more.” The DCS business assets also include Ecogate Limited and Gallito Limited which between them manufacture a range of industry-associated products including FastClip ducting and microprocessor-controlled extraction optimisation systems designed to improve extraction efficiency. DCS’s service offering is currently limited to the UK, however, bringing these products into the Absolent Group provides an opportunity

to expand the brands’ presence to overseas markets, utilising the global experience of Absolent Group’s worldwide distributor and subsidiary network whilst creating valuable synergies within the group. In the UK, project teams comprising individuals from all Absolent Group companies work together to offer a single source solution for customers looking to benefit from cleaner, safer and more productive working environments. Filtermist International was supported by PKF Cooper Parry and Legal Clarity during negotiations, whilst the sellers were advised by the Camlee Group. Innovative materials and developments in materials technology have influenced humanity since the beginnings of time. Incremental advances lead to huge changes in technology and society. If researchers and the directors of major, successful international companies can be believed, we are on the verge of the next significant change. The exhibition is divided into four large themed areas: Biological Transformation, Resource Efficiency & Sustainability, Digital Materials & Smart Systems, and Production-Related Material Innovations. With more than 100 exhibits across roughly 400m2 of exhibition space in Hall 4.2, the Disruptive Materials Piazza is set to be one of the major attractions at interzum. In the first section, Digital Materials & Smart Systems, visitors will have a chance to view heatable textile surfaces, magnetic woods and sofas that double as carbon loudspeakers. The environmental aspect is well represented in the second section in the form of biobased materials and natural growth processes. Here Dr Sascha Peters and Koelnmesse have partnered with companies that produce leather from various plant fibres. This will be accompanied by research findings

from a number of universities in fields such as Baubotanik – using plants to build living structures. The third themed area is devoted to lightweight construction and resource efficiency. The manufacturers presenting their developments in this section include Andrea Mocellin from Italy with his foldable vehicles and the German company Lightweight Solutions, which, true to its name, will be exhibiting an extremely material-efficient lightweight construction material. The fourth and final section focuses on production-related material innovations. It will shed light on future issues such as 3D-printed houses or e-bikes made from plywood. interzum is a source of inspiration for the design of tomorrow’s living spaces, and with the Disruptive Materials Piazza, it is looking to the future. “An event that sets out to be a world-leading trade fair must meet demanding criteria. It must be international; it must enable exhibitors to make successful deals and to raise their profiles – and it must look ahead to the future,” says Maik Fischer, director of interzum at Koelnmesse. “Interzum covers all these aspects, with a strong focus on the future in the themed piazzas.” www.interzum.com

8 News The recent SCM Open Days saw more than 2500 visitors flock to the Technology Centre in Rimini to find out about the new people-friendly smart factory.

Visitors impressed during SCM’s Smart & Human Factory Open Days Over 2500 visitors from all over Europe, as well as Asia, America and the Middle East descended on the SCM Technology Centre between 31st January and 2nd February at the Rimini, Italy headquarters, for the company’s Smart & Human Factory Open House. The record attendance confirms the Italian giant as a leader at international level in technology for the secondary processing of wood and the furniture industry. Following on from excellent results in 2018 with the entire group’s sales figures in excess of €700m, SCM started 2019 under the aegis of innovation with an event dedicated to the new frontiers in the digital and intelligent factory. The vision is of a factory at the forefront where SCM state-of-theart technologies are integrated with anthropomorphous industrial robots assigned to more strenuous work and collaborative robots that work safely and barrierfree alongside operators, and interconnected by unmanned

Pages/MB.indd 8

vehicles with intelligent navigation systems. The result also creates progress on the work front, that not only means the factory can meet incoming demand from the market faster and more efficiently, but it alleviates operators of the burden of repetitive work so they can focus on more high value-added tasks. Inside the SCM Technology Centre, set up for the occasion with more than 50 display solutions and those in progress, those attending were launched into the Smart & Human Factory that in three days worked on almost a thousand panels to produce four different kinds of furniture in record time. Professionals from hundreds of companies were there to learn more about the latest innovations researched and developed by SCM, including the after-sales services offered on fully digital platforms: from the IoT Maestro Connect system which gathers and analyses data from machines for an increasingly intelligent and predictive maintenance, to the Maestro Smartech glasses

which, thanks to augmented reality technology, ensure clients always have an SCM expert by their side, wherever they are in the world. There were also more than a hundred teachers and students from professional training schools for the woodworking sector as well as technical institutes who had come to Rimini from a number of regions in Italy to uncover the secrets of the people-friendly smart factory. “The Open House,” explains SCM division manager, Luigi De Vito, “was an exceptionally important opportunity to meet with our clients directly, so they could experience the new innovations at the factory of the future, first hand. The new frontiers in automation went on display during these few days, without forgetting of course, the human factor, as the title explains Smart & Human Factory: the power of SCM of being not just a supplier, but a partner ready to support its clients in their business and tangibly accompany them every step of the way, in the era of Industry 4.0.”

The process: state-of-the-art cells interconnected by unmanned shuttle services for transporting panels During the Open House, an example of the automated system for furniture production was explained at each stage of the process – from furniture production to the generation of machine programs and from panel processing to cabinet assembly. The strength behind the madein-SCM process is to optimise cutting, edge-banding and drilling operations as much as possible, as though production were on an assembly line, and put the orders back together at the end of the process, leaving customisation to this stage. This gives the manufacturer an opportunity to resolve the critical aspects of mass customisation, by rapidly dealing with all the orders, personalising them according to demand thanks to the support of the software and simultaneously reducing waste, remains and the time taken for retooling the machines for an order change.

In the Smart & Human Factory, the state-of-the-art SCM cells can be put together as you wish to meet the different panel processing requirements, with the advantage of being able to rely on a partner which has provided its clients with wholly integrated made-to-measure and turnkey solutions, for more than 65 years. New nesting developments and other SCM introductions During one of the demonstrations given at the Open House, considerable focus was placed on the new x200 and x400 Morbidelli nesting range, previewed on this occasion and designed to apply the best features of the all-in-one technology of the machining centres for the five-axis panel – even to this kind of processing. In other words, in line with the demands from a market which is ever more focused on batch one production. From the work table to the heads to be drilled, from the space taken up, increasingly less invasive and increasingly

Pages/MB.indd 9

functional and intelligent, to the innovative warehouses – each detail of these machines, with their renewed design, has been designed extremely carefully, with a view to making all the essential features accessible, as regards efficiency, quality and business evolution. As far as edge-banding is concerned, SCM’s stefanicell impressed, the new generation of cells for batch one processing, with high-tech solutions, even with minimal investment, and the new ‘pickback’ bridge system for the automatic return of panels, that guarantees simple, just-in-time production management. In the drilling/insertion island, the panels were not only drilled in the new Morbidelli ux200d CN centre but also processed with the new, exclusive system with dual variable axis broaches, that can be adjusted according to the distance between holes. Once the working process was finalised in the operator machines, the panels were carried on a roller conveyor belt towards a KUKA anthropomorphous robot which put

the kits back together, ready for the assembly of each individual order per instructions from the Maestro Watch supervision, control and data acquisition software. On the assembly island, the operators were assisted by three Universal Robots cobots to assemble the sideboards and apply the glue to the panels. The process is completed with the passage of the pre-assembled cabinet in the action p clamp for a precise assembly and an efficient squaring of the piece of furniture, and with its transfer, again via AMR shuttle, towards the storage area. Visitors were able to see the new Smart & Human Factory model at work in the island dedicated to surface treatment where, in parallel with the production of different kinds of furniture in other Technology Centre islands, cabinet doors were worked on with the aid of a dmc system, designed to meet the needs of SMEs seeking the highest sanding and finishing quality. On exiting the sanding machine, another Universal Robots cobot further perfected

the finishing. In this island, which also included the Surfaces corner with all the latest in finishing and painting, visitors to the Open House were introduced to the exclusive integrated project for surface treatment developed by SCM with a view to presenting itself as the first and only partner in Italy capable of providing a full panorama of products and services and exclusive, sought-after finishings, to satisfy all the process and typology needs of the end product. The new Surface Tech Lab is also part of this project dedicated to sanding and pressing at Villa Mare (Villa Verucchio) that integrates and complements the Technology Centre dedicated to painting Surfaces at Villasanta (Monza). Some of the most relevant new entries that visitors were given a preview of at the SCM Open House included the new Technology Centre at Villa Mare, as well as the new Sergiani membrane 3D form press, capable of unique threedimensional effects. www.scmgroup.com

15 “Whether you’re a new venture starting out or a seasoned industrial producer, there is so much to see and learn at our Open House this March” Sandteq W-200 offers high performance levels and versatility in the processing of kitchen, office and solid wood furniture. There’s a choice of three sanding units so you can achieve the specific results you need, from calibration and fine sanding of solid wood/wooden materials to veneer sanding, lacquered surfaces and paint/filler sanding. Homag’s Sprayteq S-100 provides automated spray finishing to a very high quality with water and solventbased coatings. This compact, space-saving machine is highly efficient with exact control of the spray guns and therefore optimum paint saving. The Sprayteq S-100 offers value for money and low operating costs. This, combined with the achievable production volumes, means that small and medium-sized companies looking for an effective solution for a high-quality spray application process should visit the Open House for a demonstration of this machine. Carcass assembly For shopfitters and carcass furniture makers a reliable case clamp is essential and the Cabteq S-250 will be on live demonstration at the Open House this March. One of the key benefits of this machine is its simple operation; it doesn’t require any prior knowledge. Just place the carcass into the clamp and press the start button. The pressing surfaces have tolerance compensation. The lamellas work as a unit; they are placed on rubbers and suspended. This means pressure is very evenly distributed due to the fact that the pressing lamellas simultaneously impinge on the carcass to give a tight, true carcass. Panel dividing saws Homag has a broad range of panel dividing saws for trade and industry, but at the Open House it will be showcasing its Sawteq

B-300 model. Ready for networked production this panel dividing saw is suitable for producing in batch size one as well as in smaller series. The B-300 can be specified as a single saw fed manually from the front or with built-in lifting table for additional automatic feeding from the rear of the saw. Additionally, there is the angular saw version enabling you to select the right version of the Sawteq B-300 to meet your requirements precisely. In addition to the broad basic configuration, a wide range of optional features allow the matching of the B-300 to specific processes and tasks. For added efficiency, this compact saw can easily be connected to Homag’s automatic horizontal storage systems. Visitors to Homag’s Open House will be able to see the Sawteq B-300 in action with intelliGuide professional. The intelligent machine operator assistance system provides LED light guidance to instruct the operator through the machining process. Simple to use software and operating systems The range of Homag software is

comprehensive. It includes online sales tools for direct marketing, order processing and design, programming and data generation, and production planning and control. Live demonstrations at the Open House will guide visitors through the advantages and benefits of popular software solutions including woodWOP 7.1, CAM plugin, woodCAD|CAM 2018 and MagiCut optimisation. In terms of operating systems, Homag’s latest powerTouch system is not only simple and easy to use, it also offers a host of benefits. It enables operation of a whole system with multiple machines using a single, standardised control system. PowerTouch eliminates interface issues within a plant; it reduces the training time required for new employees, and enables the direct generation of key performance figures for a particular machine directly from the controller. If all this technology is not

enough, the Homag specialists will run through the benefits of tapio – Homag’s open eco system for the woodworking industry. So if you’re not quite sure what that’s all about, the Open House is a ‘must’ for you and your business. Talk to the experts Simon Brooks continues: “Whether you’re a new venture starting out or a seasoned industrial producer, there is so much to see and learn at our Open House this March. What’s more, our Homag Finance team will be on hand to provide you with tailored financing advice and solutions that will enable you to steal a march on your competitors straight away. “So, if you’d like to take advantage of all the live demonstrations and experts on hand to help at the Open House, we’d recommend booking a slot to avoid disappointment. AXYZ to launch enhanced machine trade-in programme Following the success of its Pacer machine trade-in programme, AXYZ Automation Group is launching a new initiative that will have a much broader appeal to potential purchasers of AXYZ CNC routers. In addition to AXYZ and Pacer machines used as trade-ins, this latest programme will now extend to any other make of machine from a third-party supplier, regardless of type and country of origin. Significantly the trade-in programme, with a trade-in allowance of up to £7500, is also available to smaller companies wishing to replace a router that had failed to perform to the required and promised standard. According to AXYZ, such machines are invariably purchased on the basis of price alone from suppliers that have limited resources and frequently change product lines to reduce their own costs. This often leaves buyers with unsupported equipment and no immediate access to essential spare parts and accessories or reliable ongoing technical support.

Invariably, this has resulted in substandard and unacceptable output, dissatisfied customers and the potential for a huge financial loss. Apart from the financial attraction of the generous trade-in allowance, owners of new AXYZ routers will benefit from a raft of production enhancements. Typically, these will include higher feed rates, smoother motion for optimum material edge finish, a much wider

choice of routing/cutting heads and accessories, improved material hold-down capability for greater accuracy and fully integrated dust extraction and workplace safety systems. Collectively, these will enable much higher levels of productivity, reduced material wastage, a longer than normal machine life and ultimately greater customer satisfaction and increased

profitability. Purchasers of any new AXYZ router will also have shared access to a wide range of both standard and optional machine tool enhancements. These include an expanded (up to 33 stations) ATC (Automatic Tool Change) and the latest AXYZ Auto Zone Management system for optimum material hold-down efficiency. These are supplemented with the latest A2MC machine controller that greatly reduces or eliminates bounce and vibration caused by sudden acceleration/deceleration frequently experienced with less technically advanced systems and the integrated AVS (AXYZ Vision System) that provides greatly improved routing/cutting accuracy. Completing the options available is the latest helical rack and pinion drive system incorporating a multiple gear teeth configuration. This enables more even distribution of the workload, faster throughput rates, reduced material wastage, quieter operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. www.axyz.co.uk

Robust training programme from AMS

A dedicated team of cabinetmakers, specialising in a range of products from kitchens to bespoke wine cellars, has strengthened its ties to the Yorkshire sporting community by forming an official Business Club partnership with Leeds United Football Club. Gaining the opportunity to showcase the Watkinson Joinery name in front of more than 30,000 fans each matchday, there is also potential for the business to be broadcasted to a national audience. By becoming Leeds United Business Club partners, Watkinson Joinery has enhanced its connections to local sporting institutions, with prior links to Yorkshire County Cricket Club through their sponsorship of England Test Captain Joe Root and Karl Carver – the brother of a Watkinson Joinery employee. Founder of the business, Ian Watkinson, is also keen to contribute towards sport at an amateur level, with the company sponsoring Sessay CC and Sessay CCFC, as well as the Hambleton Junior Cricket League.

AMS is one of the leading providers of wood machine training

AMS now offers a robust industrial training programme and it is now available to the woodworking industry. The training covers forklifts, HIAB operation and LEV testing, it’s designed to equip the joiners and carpentry teams with essential knowledge aligned to the industry As a specialist provider, AMS can provide training on a comprehensive range of machines for experienced and novice users and all courses are tailored to the requirements of the individuals and/or business needs. power and extraction. AMS says its team of industrial trainers are, in their opinion, the best in the business and all have many years’ experience with a wide range of companies and situations. The company strongly believes that quality training is not just about getting the ‘right bit of paper’ rather it is about safe and efficient workers and workplaces. AMS wholeheartedly believes that

it is important that manufactures take control of their own staff training. For that, AMS has a special training course for supervisors – the Train the Trainers course – to ensure that staff training commitments are met and that companies can control the speed of delivery. Other courses available include Refresher Trainer, Novice Trainer, Assessment of Competence, Wood Machinery Safety & Audits, Safety Training and Abrasive Wheels. All of AMS woodworking machinery training courses are tailored to compliment company’s employees’ learning needs and that the equipment being using is both legal and safe. Institute for Apprenticeships approves five Level 3 furniture standards The Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) has announced that the Institute for Apprenticeships (IFA) has approved five new Level 3 apprenticeship standards for the furnishing industry. The standards, which were approved in December 2018, are Bespoke Furniture Maker, Advanced Furniture CNC Technician, Advanced Upholsterer, Fitted Furniture Design Technician and New Furniture Product Developer. The development of the standards was cofunded by the British Furniture Manufacturers Association and The Furniture Makers’ Company and follow the launch of the Level 2 apprenticeship standards in 2016. Both sets of standards have been written with industry under the Government’s Trailblazer initiative. FIESTA hopes that the new apprenticeship standards will be available for use by May this year once End Point Assessment plans have been developed. Gary Baker, FIESTA chairman, says: “We are very pleased that the IFA has approved these new standards, which were identified by the furnishing industry Trailblazer group as the apprenticeships in highest demand. After the successful introduction of the Level 2 standards, we’re excited by the prospect of training a host

of new apprentices at the Level 3 standard.” FIESTA is now calling for industry to take part in a survey to ascertain demand for higher apprenticeships. Higher and degree apprenticeships are available at Levels 4 to 7. They combine work with study and may include a work-based, academic or combined qualification relevant to the industry. Levels 4 and 5 are equivalent to a higher education certificate/diploma or a foundation degree. Level 6 is equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and Level 7 is equivalent to a master’s degree. Typically, higher apprentices study part-time at college, university or with a training provider. The survey, which closes on 28th February, has been produced on behalf of FIESTA members, and trade associations from across the UK furnishing industry. The survey is available to access here. Gary adds: “It’s important for industry to realise that we can only develop standards when we have established demand from employers. If there is a higher apprenticeship standard required, it is essential that industry lets us know by completing the survey.” www.fiestalearning.com www.instituteforapprenticeships.org

Gary Baker, chairman of FIESTA

FIESTA membership FIESTA members include: The Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF), the British Contract Furnishing Association (BCFA), the Association of British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM), The Furniture Makers’ Company (FMC), the Kitchen, Bathroom, Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA), The Kitchen Education Trust (TKET) and the National Bed Federation (NBF). FIESTA will work with the British Furniture Confederation to communicate education and training needs to the Government.

Kite Packaging acquires £700k of stock ahead of EU exit With businesses across the country looking to prepare for the potential effects of a hard Brexit, Kite Packaging has invested in £700,000-worth of insurance stock to ensure it has what it needs for the foreseeable future. Kite has carried out extensive risk assessments across its supply base and decided to stockpile 700 pallets of the most vulnerable lines. This is where employee-owned business, Kite Packaging, is implementing its strategic plan with international manufacturing partners by purchasing the additional inventory in order to secure its stock levels ready for Brexit. Companies and organisations throughout the UK are anticipating the repercussions that Brexit will create, including extra costs and changes in compliance, business structure and trade. According to Kite Packaging, businesses have been left with no choice other than to divert

Pages/MB.indd 20

time and resources to Brexit, important elements that could have been dedicated to other pivotal strategies such as future growth. Preparing for a no-deal Brexit means the realisation of compromised stock levels as sourcing international product will become more challenging within the parameters of UK business. This investment is another example of Kite’s market-leading approach, which will inevitably put the business in good stead for the coming months of unfamiliar territory where stock may well have limited availability. Managing partner Gavin Ashe says: “No business wants to tie up capital unnecessarily but we have a strong balance sheet and take our responsibility to our customers very seriously. “It was felt we just couldn’t take the risk of running out of stock so we have made this investment to protect our customers.” www.kitepackaging.co.uk

22 Installation Established in 2010, C Workshop provides cut-to-size and edgebanding services for wood-based panels, such as particleboard, chipboard, plywood and MDF. The company offers fast, reliable turnaround and competitive prices from its 15,000ft2 north London location.

Two Sawteq B-300 beam saws from Homag deliver quality, reliability and new business for C Workshop Sales manager at C Workshop, Daniele Danese, enthusiastically explains what makes C Workshop so successful: “For us, it’s all about customer satisfaction. Our business has grown exponentially over the last few years because of the quality of our products and the reliability of our service. “Word-of-mouth is our biggest ally. So it is vitally important for us to be able to consistently rely on delivering premium quality cut and edged panels. If the cut quality and accuracy are not spot-on, then we cannot deliver a first class finished product. “This is why we selected Homag beam saws; in our opinion, they are simply the best on the market. We first invested in a Homag saw in 2015 and immediately reaped the benefits. As our business grew, we purchased a second saw in 2016 and then invested in the two new Sawteq B-300 beam saws in March 2018; these were installed in August the same year.” Panel dividing saw – the Homag Sawteq B-300 The Sawteq B-300 offers high performance in a compact space. This panel dividing saw is suitable for producing in batch size one as well as in smaller series and is ready for connection to automatic horizontal storage systems. Designed for smooth material flow and precise logistics process, it is also ideal for networked production processes. The saw has been designed to meet future expansion requirements which can be achieved thanks to the many options that can be retrofitted. With a dimensionally accurate program fence and a rugged pressure beam, the B-300 produces a first-class quality cut each and every time. To shorten cycle times it features a central side pressure device which is integrated directly in the saw carriage. CADmatic 5 – the state-of-the-art, highperformance saw control system The latest generation of the Homag saw controller, CADmatic 5, features a new assistance graphic that clearly shows the machine operator what he has to do next. This 3D assistance tool is intuitive to operate, shortening the training period and reducing operator errors to a minimum. The system has a 21in full-HD widescreen monitor with multi-touch display to tap and swipe commands quickly and easily. It provides a vast range of functions and ease of use thanks to its intuitive operating concept and clear administrative functions. What’s more,

CADmatic 5 is ready for connection to tapio, Homag’s digital platform, and also provides open communication with other machines and software solutions. Beam saws you can rely on Daniele Danese again: “One of the biggest benefits to our business is the peace of mind the Homag saws give us. When we’re running at maximum capacity we can’t afford to have machines go down. “With the four saws in our facility we can be processing up to 2000 panels a day. Irrespective of this high throughput, we have to maintain the cut quality and accuracy, otherwise we can’t deliver the high quality products and service our customers demand. “The new Sawteq B-300s have enabled us to attract bigger customers, with enquiries up to £100,000 in value. Naturally these companies demand not only high volumes of quality cut and edged panels, but also fast delivery time frames. “Even in peak demand periods, the Homag saws are able to consistently perform and thus allow us to maintain our first class customer service which is the hallmark of our business. As a consequence, our customers hold us in high regard, knowing that they can always rely on us to deliver.”

Homag brings a breath of fresh air “Apart from the fact that the performance of the machinery is exceptional, Homag’s outstanding reliability is a breath of fresh air in this industry. The certainty that we can rely on these saws day in, day out, helps C Workshop deliver on our promise to customers. “On top of this, the service back-up from Homag is first class. Although it rarely happens, if we have a machine issue, Homag’s online diagnostics system solves the problem quickly. “It has always been our company’s policy to ensure our machinists are highly trained, not only in the operation of the equipment, but also in maintenance procedures. “As a matter of course we regularly replace the blades, and clean and service the saws to keep them in first class condition. Our quality standards are extremely high and Homag has definitely added to that,” concludes Daniele Danese. Arnold Laver increase door production with new Essepigi Evolution through-feed line Arnold Laver & Co – which recently merged with the National Timber Group to create the largest independent timber distribution business in the UK – has just installed a new Essepigi high volume door processing line at its main Bradford premises. A favoured supplier for major timber infrastructure projects throughout the UK, Arnold Laver has always been at the forefront of investment in new equipment that will help increase productivity and efficiency. This is now of even greater importance as the new group will have a total of 52 distribution and processing sites, employing a total of 1300 staff. In recent years an increasingly important part of the business Arnild Laver’s been the supply of performance doorsets and doorkits. Although the company operates several conventional flatbed CNC machining centres, it became increasingly clear these could not meet current or projected demands. As a result, in early 2018, group joinery director David Oldfield, along with Bradford depot director, John Gabbat, and production manager John Lockwood, were tasked with the job of identifying how to increase production in the

constantly growing door sector. Whilst the machining of doors and frames for hinge recesses and locks etc is a relatively simple operation, the big disadvantages limiting output was the time it was taking to process an individual door, including manual loading/ unloading. It became clear to the team that the way forward was a through-feed machine, able to machine both sides of a door simultaneously. As Arnold Laver had previously installed a machine supplied from JJ Smith just for the linings, they contacted them again to discuss its new requirements. Following a meeting with sales director Paul Parker, who had recently overseen the sale and installation of a couple of door processing lines in the UK from Italian specialist manufacturer Essepigi, a visit was arranged to see a machine working on site at a large Swedish door manufacturer. As well as machining out for the hinge recesses, lock slots and drilling for handle holes and key slots, this particular model was also equipped with automatic hinge and lock insertion and linked to a separate machine for the frames. John Gabbat comments: “Straight away we could see the difference between

what we were already using compared to a line designed for exactly what we need.” A visit to the Essepigi factory near Ancona was set up a few weeks later to see the projects they had ongoing for various different door processing companies from all over Europe – basically doing similar type of work to Arnold Laver. Following further detailed discussions a proposal was put together for the Essepigi Evolution which is a through-feed, double-sided machine capable of carrying out all types of required machining on different size doors in quick succession. Key features include automatic loading transfer with automatic reference of door width and thickness, which automatically compensates for any minor difference between the programmed door size and the actual door size to be processed. For the machining process the Evolution is fitted with horizontal electro spindles and a drilling spindle on both sides for the simultaneous, quick machining of locks and hinges in one cycle. In addition there is an overhead bridge fitted with a six position

linear tool changer giving the facility to fully size a door, machine out for apertures, drop seals and door closers. Typical production time for machining an internal door with three hinges and lock would be about one minute, including loading and unloading! For sizing a door, drilling for a spyhole and again with three hinges and a lock production, the time would be approximately two minutes. Options include automatic loading/unloading systems by Robot, QR/barcode scanning and automatic inserting of the hardware. Machine programming is simple and quick thanks to Essepigi’s own dedicated DoorPro software which uses electronic macro templates. Due to their knowledge and expertise in door production processes, Essepigi are able to offer bespoke and special machine configurations, tailored to customers’ needs. Returning from Italy, Arnold Laver placed an order and the machine was delivered on schedule and is now in full production. John Gabbat adds: “From the outset both JJ Smith and Essepigi were very professional in their approach and carefully listened to what we wanted. We were very impressed with the machine we saw in operation and also with the tests that were carried out at the Essepigi factory. The installation went very smoothly and I am pleased to say the Evolution is working extremely well and is meeting all our requirements.” Paul Parker concludes: “It has been a pleasure to work with Arnold Laver on this project, and the fact they gave us such a detailed brief of their requirements helped immensely in identifying the specification of machine they needed. We look forward to partnering them again in the future.” 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

It does not contain or release any formaldehyde, has no formaldehyde content in the formulation and no formaldehyde is released during the adhesive setting due to chemical reactions. In short, this adhesive does not add formaldehyde to the total wood panel release of that substance. Rakoll Express to 50 (D2 PVAc) is used for gluing block & strip cores, surface gluing of HPL & CPL in short cycle presses, and for carcase and assembly gluing. Rakoll Express 25 universal hardwood glue is commonly used for seating furniture and other joints subjected to high load. These are just part of the extensive range of Rakoll adhesives. “Think PVAc adhesive – think Rakoll,” says Peter,

A limitless offer from Decorative Panels Lamination In 2017, Decorative Panels Lamination installed a brand new state-of-the-art laminator and launched dp-limitless. After a successful two years on the market the company continues to grow and develop this fantastic collection. The laminator uses different technology to the other Thermo-rolling lines within Decorative Panels Laminations 140,000ft2 manufacturing facility, which enables it to laminate a much wider range of products in much smaller quantities – significantly increasing its offer into the marketplace. The laminator utilises a high bond strength PUR glue line which will ensure a superb overall finish on sheet sizes up to 3660 x 1430mm – although 2440 x 1220mm and 3050 x 1220mm makes up the majority of the offer. When viewed in conjunction with the dp-décor and dp-specialist ranges from Decorative Panels Lamination, the addition of dplimitless gives both current and new customers the opportunity to develop new ranges and one-off projects in a range of materials, which have never before been so readily available from a UK manufacturer. dp-limitless offers a truly diverse range of enhanced surfaces, in quantities that make them available to a much wider market including architects, specifiers, shopfitters, exhibition constructors, the leisure industry and of course the furniture industry. dp- limitless stock range comprises the following: an extension to the dp-specialist Senoplast Acrylic offer – bringing the number of designs available to 62, including the incredible 2mm thick Acryl Glass Senoplast Acrylic. Other products available are high pressure laminates from both ABET and Egger, faux leather products, real stone veneers, technical surfaces, real wood veneers and of course anything else that can be sourced to fulfil specific needs.

Traditional kitchens – charming and elegant A traditional kitchen is one of the most popular and versatile style concepts that includes several design elements, including warm colours and symmetrical lines and which allows homeowners to feel comfortable and elegant at the same time. A modern contemporary interpretation of traditional combines new fresh woodgrain designs with plain colours in matt or supermatt textured surfaces. Keep an installation current by connecting upto-date decors with the latest trend toned solid colour doors or within the surrounding room by the use of accessories and soft furnishings. Oak remains a firm favourite in this genre. Renolit Alkoren Kendal Oak is a smooth oak with subtle details and an even uniformity of colour. A gentle linear structure flows around attractively proportioned swirling knots. The surface has a light distribution of linear pores giving it a natural look with a velvety, pleasant touch. An alternative contender, and a break from the norm, is the upand-coming Rockford Hickory. One

the latest new décor’s on offer in Renolit’s stock range, it is robust and versatile. This sophisticated design is created by light pores and contrasting cathedrals. Variation of pattern and colour emphasises its inherent beauty. Complement with the subtle tone of Stone Grey Supermatt and a fresh forest green to create a traditional effect with modern appeal. A more recent development of a traditional kitchen is the appearance of painted look woodgrain textured single colour doors that give a modern twist to conventional kitchen design. Painted timber look, such as Renolit’s 3D thermoformable Modern Ash, is particularly suited to present-day new build homes where the owner desires the quality and design statement associated with a traditional kitchen but in a smaller space where a full woodgrain décor may be domineering. Modern Ash is a deep, visual ash structured surface emboss which creates an up-to-date contemporary painted timber finish – a style which fits well with a variety of five-piece or routered door styles.

The Modern Ash emboss matches Egger’s ST27 and Renolit offers a wide spectrum of seven colours. Illustrated here are two different colourways; dark and light to illustrate how trending accessorising or a change of wall paint will have a dramatic effect on the overall feel of a kitchen. The dramatic dark colour of Onyx Grey provides a statement to any room. Needing little to lift the effect further it can be easily combined with a variety of colours to meet the individual’s preferences. Onyx Grey is shown here combined with Tin Plate, OakENDgrain Delight or Fern to create a pleasant interior. At the other end of the spectrum, the soft light tone of White Grey Modern Ash provides an ideal backdrop which can be enriched with bolder woodgrain designs such as Inedito 1 SC, or by adding warm metallic Rose Gold to provide a bright and cheerful atmosphere. 36 Decorative panels, surfacing & coatings Beginning as a supplier of components for temporary structures to the armed forces in the 1950s, F G Parker’s state-of-the-art facility provides edging, wrapping, cutting and drilling facilities, providing the flexibility and service standards required by customers all over the country.

Optimising the manufacturing process As a family business with third generation Rob Parker now managing the operation, F G Parker’s business successfully diversified into furniture manufacturing in the early 1980s providing products and services to help manufacturers find greater productivity in their businesses. The Dorset firm has continued to develop within the industry supplying a full range of furniture components, mouldings, wrapped profiles, kitchen carcasses and cabinets, cutting, edging and CNC machining services to its clients. In order to provide the flexibility and service standards required by today’s customers across the country, F G Parker’s 20,000ft2 impressive production plant is home to highly advanced CNC routing equipment, the very latest CAD/CAM capabilities and high performance edging, wrapping, cutting and drilling facilities. Drilling rails F G Parker’s specialist drilling and boring machines enables the company to offer various holes

drilled to any area of any-sized cross ties, post, mullion, front rail and back rail. Additionally, it is able to drill longer-sized rails up to three metres long – its rail drilling department is able to cope with high volume orders as well as small batches. Rob Parker points out: “As standard, we produce many colours to get the perfect posts for the kitchen design. We hold in stock 36 x 36mm and 60 x 36mm but we can make to any specification. We can add drilling and/or we can cut the lengths down to fit any carcass size required – or just supply long lengths. “Customers can also save time on their edge lines and get us to wrap small rails. We can even cut and drill them to customers’ drawings which will save significant man hours.” Wrapped profiles Wrapped profiles are typically used for cornice, pelmets, skirting boards, picture frames, small rails for kitchen and bathroom cabinets and drawer wraps.

“We can wrap many MDF and chipboard products in a variety of shapes and sizes,” explains Rob. “This process means that we can supply a post, rail and/or cornice to match any style. Additionally, the product can be wrapped all the way round giving a very tidy look to any cabinet, whilst at the same time keeping the cost low. F G Parker operates multiple PUR glue lines for a high-quality, cost-effective product. The benefits of using PUR glue on wrapped products is that it provides a high strength bond, moisture resistance and reduces the danger of humidity interlacing. This process increases the standard lifespan of all its products compared to those manufactured with other glue types. “We have a large range of foils available to us from PVC and paper coloured-matched to real wood veneered foils. Working with our foil suppliers, we can match many colours including plain, high gloss and woodgrains. Regardless of small or large order quantities we will be happy to assist with customers’ enquiries,” says Rob.

Edging “With direct trade accounts with Egger and Kronospan, we are able to source a wide range of décors and matching edging to fulfil customers’ particular specifications, meeting any size and quantity required. “All our edging is adhered using PUR glue, the benefits of which are that it provides a high strength bond and moisture resistance. Additionally this type of glue offers a minimal glue line between the

Pages/MB.indd 37

MFC and edging, but ensures the product can withstand the rigours of heat and moisture over a long period of time,” points out Rob. “We have a large range of edgings available to us from ABS to real wood veneers. Working alongside our suppliers, we can match most colours and finishes including matt, high gloss and woodgrains.” Regardless of small or large order quantities, F G Parker is able to assist with customers’ varying requirements.

Panel cutting “We are specialists in cutting MFC and chipboard/MDF raw boards,” says Rob. “On our highspeed automatic beam saws and automatic crosscut saws, we are able to meet the vast majority of customers’ requirements. “We use the latest in optimisation software to minimise waste and

optimise cutting lists so that each panel can be cut accurately and efficiently. We can source the material and décor for you, but can also provide a cutting service for materials that you have already purchased yourself,” concludes Rob. 01308 422987 www.fgparker.co.uk

NWM/NWMD is the ideal system for panel lamination The Italian wrapping machine manufacturer WPR has recently launched the NWM/NWMD, the ideal machine for single- and/or doublesided lamination of wood, MDF and chipboard panels up to a width of 2200mm with PVC, CPL, PET, PETG, PP, ABS or paper foils. According to WPR, this machine features all the advantages of slot nozzle application along with the top performance of hot melt PUR adhesives and is fully customisable with a wide range of technical extras in order to increase productivity. WPR asserts that NWM/NWMD offers all the advantages of slot nozzle application: • Adhesive is applied directly to the foil which gives a smooth surface finish • High profitability: allows precise adhesive application minimizing cost • Great aesthetic results: mirror-finish • Ideal application precision for High Gloss foils • High quality: avoids contamination since the adhesive does not come into contact with the air • Increased productivity: easy and fast cleaning that guarantees reduced maintenance time • Slot nozzle application allows post-forming This system is endowed with four independent servo motors that allow g control over speed and antistatic brushes to ensure a clean surface before the foiling. The NWM/NWD offers a simple and clean wrapping process: the initial phase guarantees a high quality of preparation and treatment of the panel surface thanks to the antistatic brushes, then during the foil application, a series of sensors gives high control of the production for a higher quality of the final product. After the foiling, the panels go through an automatic foil cutting system that separates each piece and that operates independently of the length of the workpiece, the sequence and the speed of the production process. The whole procedure can be monitored on the machine control panel, an intuitive and simple touch screen interface that allows the operator to adjust speed, panel measures and temperatures. The PUR adhesive manufacturer and WPR’s sister company TAKA offers a range of glues ideal for the NWM/NWMD machine with excellent wettability, spreadability, long open times, strong initial bond strength and high penetration. In April, WPR and TAKA will have an open day to show the NWM/ NWMD at its Italian headquarters. For further information about this system, contact Mike Dean at adhesivesolutions@btinternet.com. 01422 524023 www.adhesivesolutionsltd.co.uk

44 Software Alphacam update allows kitchen door manufacturer to make significant savings in a year.

O & D Doors says Alphacam is vital for automation and efficiencies A company manufacturing around 65,000 doors a week for kitchen cabinets says its future lies with robotics, automation and increased efficiencies. Based at Dungannon in Northern Ireland, O & S Doors uses Alphacam CAD/CAM software to drive 17 Biesse CNC routers, four Reichenbachers and one Homag. The Biesses, including two five-axis machines, and the Homag, are all programmed for full production runs, with the Reichenbachers largely used for bulk production. The company’s range includes cabinet doors and drawer fronts made principally from an MDF core with PVC or acrylic fascias, along with some solid wood doors. While recent updates to Aalphacam’s powerful nesting function have substantially improved their material yield, O &

Pages/MB.indd 44

S Doors’ projects manager Paul McCullagh says the software’s fiveaxis capability is also an important part of the equation. “Our five-axis machines give us the capability to produce the widest and most flexible range of curved doors made to order in the UK and Irish markets. Virtually every design we offer can be recreated in a curved format along with matching accessories. The use of the Aalphacam software is invaluable in this regard.” Aalphacam’s new nesting engine improves material yield by between six and eight per cent on each sheet, which he says equates to a lorry-load of board every week. “This is contributing towards offsetting increased raw material costs.” “Increasing efficiencies in this way allows us to continue investing

in other automation projects within the factory, and ultimately adds to the company’s bottom line.” It’s automation that Paul sees as being the way forward. O&S already has a robotic arm for loading boards at the start of the process where the acrylic front is laminated onto the MDF core. In addition, two Aalphacam modules – Automation Manager and CDM (Cabinet Door Manufacture) -- work in conjunction to automate bulk programming. Once the team has imported an Excel file of all the doors of mixed sizes for a production run, the software produces NC code for any machine on the shop floor. Alphacam area manager David McIntyre says: “Irrespective of how many doors they’re working on, Automation Manager takes the list and creates the code for all the door sizes. It means O & S Doors

don’t have to carry out individual part programming. So whether they’re working on 50, 150, or 500 doors, the whole batch is fully programmed in the same time it would take to program just one door. “Nowadays, a conventional OEM CAM system processes each file individually, but it won’t write 50 or 500 programs in just a couple of minutes. Aalphacam’s Automation Manager means 2D and 3D CAD files, along with solid models from third party software, can be batch processed, from file preparation right through to applying toolpaths, with the NC code automatically generated.” Alphacam has also worked with O & S Doors on several bespoke operations to improve efficiency further, including the ability to show accurate timings for producing

every sheet. Paul McCullagh says: “We found we had a number of jobs waiting to be processed on the factory floor, but no way of knowing how long they’d take . . . a full sheet could take between ten minutes and an hour.” An Alphacam engineer spent two days working with them to set up a time management project for the routers, by making bespoke amendments to the software and postprocessor, and liaising with a company that produced a web interface to monitor production on the factory floor. “We’ve now got a module to show the time each router spends on cutting each sheet. This has led to several improvements as we can now easily monitor the efficiency of every router to ensure we’re getting the absolute best we can from each one.” Operating from a 400,000ft2 factory with around 350 employees, O & S Doors says its Sage Line 500 ERP system

Pages/MB.indd 45

has been adapted to integrate with Alphacam. “Once the orders are keyed in, we take a CSV file across to Alphacam’s Cabinet Door Manufacture module, which produces our nested sheets. “On a project basis, we design our doors in Alphacam and send samples to the customer. Once they’re approved, the production run is nested, and the nested sheets go to the factory floor, while the stores bring the board to the routers ready for machining.

Alphacam creates the NC code and reports, along with labels which are then applied to the back of the doors.” Another Alphacam benefit is that it allows the parts to be fully rotated on the nes . . . or if specific grain direction is required, it locks the axis, so the boards all face the same way. Concluding, Paul says while automation already plays a key role in O & S Doors’ manufacturing process, it is continually seeking to

drive further efficiencies with fewer clicks and less manual input. “Around 90% of our products go through Alphacam, and most orders have a three-day lead time, which includes a full day from order entry, through the nesting operation, to the shop floor for machining. “We’re currently looking at ways of how Aalphacam can help us reduce that to just three hours,” he says. 01189 226677 www.alphacam.com

Customisable CNC software solutions With over 29 years of experience in designing and developing CAD/ CAM packages for the furniture production and interior design markets, Austrian software expert, CAD+T specialises in creating highly customisable software solutions for three- and four-axis CNC machines, including nesting versions. “We focus our attention on bespoke furniture design,” begins Martina Schwarz, international sales and marketing manager at CAD+T. “Our CNC software packages don’t work off a preprogrammed database system that has been designed for the massmarket. Instead, we create flexible solutions that are based on our customers’ machinery capabilities, the tools available, the geometry and materials used.” Offering the next generation in CNC software, CAD+T’s clever CAM Interface separates components and automatically generates CNC data from the customers’ construction drawings. A database of milling strategies, machining parameters and tools generate the machine files needed to complete the job, which in turn, creates a solution that doesn’t require the programming or reorganising of CNC data. In short, this means users can

Pages/MB.indd 48

wave goodbye to timely manual programming, generic system inputting and the need for an experienced software programmer. Simple to implement into a business – the only thing needed to set the software up is the material specification – the software has been designed to optimise production processes and materials output, offering timesaving benefits of around 60% per order, as well as error prevention of up to 80%. Plus, the added benefit of being able to run one software package on several CNC machines saves time and money throughout the production cycle. Martina adds: “Our adaptable approach to software design allows us to analyse the production process and create effective software concepts that work around our customers’ most challenging requirements. This is what separates CAD+T from other software developers. Around 90% of our customers work on CNC machines. We’re seeing a growing trend towards five-axis work but we’re predominantly working with three-axis machines in the UK. “It’s a very important market for us and, due to demand, we’re continuing to invest heavily in ongoing research and product development in this area. We work

closely with our customers and we’re not afraid to talk to industry to find out what they need. This approach has led us to create a wealth of problem-solving

solutions that have been proven to be advantageous to the furniture industry.” office@cadt-solutions.com www.cadt-solutions.com

it regularly provides equipment for include loading and unloading for vertical panel saws, beam saws, dimension saws, flat-bed CNC stations, edgebanders, laminators, paint lines and tilt tables. The most common wood materials handled by our lifting systems include Trespa jumbo boards, Spandrel panels, MDF,

MFC, chipboard, wood, plywood, Sterling board, plasterboard and polycarbonate – weights up to 350kg can be picked up. Wood products handled include fire doors, panel doors, furniture, staircases, planks, timber sections, laminate surfaces and cabinets. The company is also often asked to rotate boards through 90 or

51 180° for loading saws and gripping boards which its systems can handle with ease. Matt Bennison, Palamatic’s customer relations and marketing manager, explains how the company addresses each application: “Our philosophy is to provide equipment fit for the purpose, so all applications are looked at by our engineers to design the correct solution. “The gantry that the lifting systems are suspended on are critical to offering an ergonomic solution that works for the operator. We can provide H-style gantry systems to cover large areas, but our smaller swing jibs and low headroom centre posts can fit in to areas where space is an issue and work perfectly well,” points out Matt. “With our 22,000ft² factory based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, we are well placed to visit customer sites, and for customers to send us samples to test prior to us manufacturing their vacuum tube lifter. We have a skilled field engineering team to install the systems and come in to train your operators. “We recommend our service contracts with each system as we find the wood industry use their systems daily and therefore the upkeep of them is vital for production.” 01246 452054 sales@palamatic.com www.palamatic.com

Reducing processing times on wood surfaces with Hesse’s Fantastic-Fill primer Priming wood surfaces can take several hours, but with Hesse’s Fantastic-Fill primer professionals could save up to 50% in coats and processing times. For a first-class finish, primer is a necessity which should form the foundation of any woodfinishing project. When applied properly, primers improve a wood’s surface adhesion for spraying, protect against wear and tear and dramatically improve the overall surface finish. However, there’s no denying that the process can be a tedious one – with many primers taking hours to dry, depending on the type of wood you’re preparing and the type of primer you’re using. With this in mind, Redwood Innovation is shining a spotlight on Hesse’s Fantastic-Fill primer – a polyurethane isolation primer, suitable for interior wood surfaces and typically saves professionals up to 50% in coats and processing times. A modern solution for an age-old problem Using the latest technology, Fantastic Fill was developed by Hesse to deliver powerful filling and levelling effects, which naturally optimise sanding characteristics – meaning up to 20% less sanding is required and the process can

Pages/MB.indd 60

take place just two hours after application – a rarity in the current primer marketplace. What’s more, a surface treated with Fantastic-Fill can easily be lacquered shortly after the surface has been treated. This best-in-class technology results in significantly reduced processing times, without compromising on the quality of finish. Safety first As well as driving innovation

in the lacquer industry, Hesse prides itself on the safety of its products. Fantastic-Fill surpasses all current industry standards for heat-, chemical- and scratchresistance and meets the most stringent testing for Class B1 fire certification, as well as Fire performance to EN 13501-1 and IMO certification. What’s more, the FantasticFill formulation is free from wood preservatives, toxic heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers and

formaldehyde – making it suitable for a wide range of wood surfaces, including shopfitting interiors, fixtures, bathrooms, kitchens and marine interiors. If you’d like to find out more about Hesse Lignal’s FantasticFill PUR primer, contact Redwood Innovations to speak to one of its finishing specialists. 02392 233310 sales@redwoodinnovations. co.uk www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk

62 Updates Camco has a long-standing tradition of customer service and excellence in the supply of both veneer and ABS edgebanding material. The company also has other edgebanding options which can help create impressive and aspirational designs.

Edgebanding solutions for aspirational designs Working closely with its customers, Camco takes pride in meeting the ever increasing demands of a challenging marketplace. In addition to its standard edgebanding products, Camco has a range of creative and desirable options for manufacturers. “Regular edgebanding is of course a proven and highly practical way to finish the edges of furniture – but beyond the standard offerings, Camco has a number of alternative options work further investigation,” says Camco’s David Phillips. “Working with industry leading manufactures, we are able to provide the highest quality products both on time and on budget.” Veneer edgebanding – thick veneer in rolls Thick veneer rolls are constructed using several veneer layers of standard thickness (0.5mm) pressed together to form a sandwich to the desired thickness. To produce thick edges, veneers are selected based on a quality choice and colour coordination. Camco has a wide variety of finishes and veneers with widths ranging from 14 to 250mm. David explains why thick edges in rolls are seen as the ideal substitute for solid veneer strips: “First quality veneer is used on the upper layer, insuring thus the finest aspect of tonality and grain required. Also, thick veneer rolls are more flexible than solid veneer strips and continuous thick veneer rolls can be used on automatic edge banding machines. “In addition, roughened base layer ensures perfect adherence and it offers better and easier conservation and storage possibilities. Importantly, endless thick veneer rolls ensure minimum wastage during edging process.” Solid end grain veneer edgebanding By using Camco’s solid, end-grain edgeband,

End grain embossed-in register edgebanding

Thick veneer in rolls

veneer boards have the natural look of a solid wood board, where even see the growth rings can clearly be seen. For the manufacture of this edgeband Camco uses natural cross-cut veneer in 0.7mm foils. The resulting pieces are joined to form a roll. In addition, to strengthen that roll, a 0.5mm veneer under layer is added, thus obtaining a sandwich of 1.2mm thickness aproximately. The top layer of the end grain tapes is always supplied sanded. New PVC edgebands – stitch edgebanding Stitch edgeband gives components a more realistic feel with to the imitation of a double stitch. Undoubtedly, stitched leather edgeband is a notable trend with a design aesthetic of rich, unique texture and eye-catching look. It is ideal for decoration purposes conferring an industrial, rustic or vintage look and also combines well with soft embossing. Stitch edgeband designs have been created to match with melamine boards popularised by key manufacturers in the market. Camco highlights this new edgeband as an ideal complement, which will enhance the

elegance of leather and textile embossing of melamine boards. The stitch imitation embossed and not just printed on the edgeband emphasises realism in walk-in closets and wardrobes. End grain embossed-in register edgebanding Optics and haptics blend together to get the perfect match. End grain embossed-in register edgebanding gives the opportunity to Camco customers to stand out from the crowd. As a result of the new production process, the embossed surface matches the printed wood grain design, giving a realistic solid wood look. The colours of the surface are applied into the different embossing heights, in this way obtaining a realistic wood effect, where the veneer texture can be you can seen and touched in the edgeband. Camco recommend the use of this edgeband with melamine boards that have two tonalities in their surface. The company says a win-win design arises from combining this kind of melamine design with its synchronised end grain edgeband. 0289 264 6688 www.camco.uk/edging

CAMCO REINVENTING THE PLYWOOD LOOK PVC plywood effect edge banding has been in our market for a long time. It imitates the edge of a plywood board and transfers that effect into a particle board. In Camco we have improved the current PVC plywood edge banding to get a more realistic effect on melamine boards. We offer a traditional plywood PVC edge banding that imitates the edge of real plywood made of wood. Our collection also includes PVC edge banding with metallic colours: copper and aluminium. All of our references are perfect to create contrast with plain-coloured melamine, wood, marble or concrete designs.

66 Updates An acoustic panelling manufacturer looked to Air Plants to fulfil its requirements for a new dust extraction plant.

A new, modern dust extraction plant, increasing efficiency and reducing energy consumption With a client base that spans the globe and 40 years’ experience in delivering high profile projects, Woodfit Acoustics is the world’s leading provider of wooden acoustic panelling. Combining expertise in acoustic engineering and design, Woodfit turns its clients’ creative visions into reality and has earned a reputation for the highest levels of skill and craftsmanship. Starting out as a manufacturer of bespoke kitchen cabinets; Woodfit Acoustics has progressed and succeeded in becoming a worldrenowned specialist fabricator of superior wooden acoustic panels. Today the company has worldclass manufacturing facilities and almost 50 employees across three buildings.

Below: The externallysited cyclo filter plant with a 37kW high efficiency fan set

Pages/MB.indd 66

Air Plants Dust Extraction installed the original dust extraction plant in 1999. Various additions and modifications have been made over the years to accommodate the expansions that have taken place at Woodfit Acoustics.

With the addition of a new factory area, Woodfit approached Air Plants to discuss its requirements for a new, modern dust extraction plant. In 2017, Air Plants designed, supplied and installed a cyclo filter plant with a 37kW high efficiency fan set. The externally sited system has a small footprint and handles an air volume of 29,000m³/hour. Wood waste from the filter discharges into two sealed skips. The new plant is fitted with pneumatic blast gates. This semiautomated system allows gates to some of the machine connections to shut off air when it is not required. This results in a more efficient system and helps to reduce energy consumption. The cyclone dust collector boasts automatic reverse jet cleaning and 95% separation prior to bag filtration. It is also compliant with COSHH and EPA requirements. Clean air is returned to the factory. An internally-sited Untha LR630 wood shredder handles a wood waste volume of 1-7m³ per week. Off-cuts are collected from around the factory and fed into the shredder. 0116 283 3581 airplants.co.uk

68 Updates Long-established woodworking machinery specialist plans for the future

Daltons Wadkin invests for 2019 and beyond ‘Look forward not back’ is the ethos at Daltons Wadkin today, in spite of its 118-year history of supply to the timber-using trades. Diversification is another key word you will hear a lot around the company’s Nottingham headquarters as directors Alex Dalton and Andy Walsh strive to open up additional markets in the plastics and metal industries for the company’s increasingly versatile and sophisticated range of equipment. Owner of the famous Wadkin brand and IPR since their acquisition in 2010, the company not only continues manufacturing and updating some of the original Wadkin designs but has also integrated the name, and to some extent its image, into many of its activities, including operator training, servicing, rebuilding and even distribution. A new Wadkin website is currently being prepared and will be launched within the next few weeks. But whilst a significant and important contribution to its heritage, this is no more than a confirmation of the company’s engineering pedigree, as greater emphasis is placed on an ever-expanding range of high performance and CNC-controlled equipment to meet the demands of the 21st century. Alex and sales director Andy are successfully promoting the Kimla range of CNC routers, Salvador and Salvamac cross-cutting solutions to diverse industries in all parts of the UK and Ireland, and are already

seeing substantial growth in these areas. Add to this the distribution of established European brands like the highly successful Elcon vertical panel saw range, Altendorf sliding table saws, CEHISA edge-banders, Kuper planer moulders, Stenner band resaws, CML multi-rip saws, Greda CNC machining centres and a full range of Wadkin and other classical machines, and it will be seen that the company offers a range of undisputed quality equipment which it would be hard to match. Much time and resources have been spent sourcing its product range exclusively from European manufacturers. Alex and Andy have travelled extensively in Poland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Holland and the Czech Republic, successfully establishing partnerships with major suppliers. Prospective customers are flown out as required to see the various manufacturing facilities for themselves, and visits to the dedicated Kimla CNC factory in Poland and the Greda CNC and Salvador facilities in Italy are becoming increasingly regular events. Alex Dalton comments: “We are proud of the comprehensive service we provide to the industry and will continue to modify and update our activities to suit future demands. Having said that, we recognise also the significance of our 100plus years of experience and the strength this brings to our market

profile. “Our engineering team continues to rebuild equipment to the highest standards as well as carrying out installations throughout the length and breadth of the country. Our go-anywhere service operation provides customer support wherever and whenever it is required and we are enabling increased levels of operator training to organisations large and small, either on site or within our purpose-made training facility here in Nottingham.” A PIABC Quality Assured Training Centre, the Red Team of time-served machine operator trainers is being expanded to meet demand and both apprentice and experienced engineers and technicians are being recruited to support the increasingly diverse and advanced machinery range now within the company’s portfolio.

A new support team reporting directly to Alex Dalton has been set up to oversee installations of CNC and other programmable machines as well as providing a help desk to ensure that expert technical advice and information is always available. Proven engineering values shaping future technology could be said to sum up the Daltons Wadkin philosophy. To quote managing director Francis Dalton, who has personally notched up over 60 years in the industry: “Our longevity is amazing and I think quite unique amongst UK woodworking machinery distributors or manufacturers, but our business is moving with the times and Alex and his team will ensure that wherever new technology and changes to working practises take us, Daltons Wadkin will be there to meet the challenge.” www.daltonswadkin.com

70 Updates Founded in 2011, Cambian Engineering Solutions’ says its extensive project experience using engineered wood is unique in the UK. The company brings together professional engineering design and automated manufacturing to deliver complex engineered structures, joinery fit-outs and one-off bespoke items.

Delivering in the exceptional – Cambian’s high quality stand-out projects Cambian employs the latest parametric 3D CAD modelling and CAD/CAM manufacturing processes from the mechanical engineering world, and applies that to architectural and joinery projects. This enables the West Sussex-based firm to deal with very complex geometric and free-form shapes in an efficient and accurate process. The company caters for projects at any stage, including complete turn-key solutions from concept to installation, through to assisting with design or production requirements. Cambian has worked on numerous prestigious projects including Birmingham New Street Station, The Bloomberg Building and The Royal Opera House. It has also crafted one-off unique pieces of furniture for internationally renowned designers, and provided digital design and manufacturing solutions to many UK joinery firms. Cambian’s portfolio is incredibly diverse. Within the advanced engineering sector, it is creating highly complicated fabrications, where it desigs and manufactures joinery-type products that are used in place of metallic and composite structures. Using similar 3D CAD and CNC processes, its Action Sports division creates world-class leisure facilities, including the award-winning

Pages/MB.indd 70

Source Park in Hastings and Yonder in Walthamstow, delivering unrivalled level of finish on a large scale. Piers Chapman, Cambian Engineering managing director says: “No challenge is too complex for Cambian to consider. Our Engineering skills enable us to deal with many

projects that would pose a real challenge to others in the joinery market. As a result, we are commonly working with clients and contractors to help deliver exceptional quality result for stand-out projects.” 01403 752 528 www.cambian-engineering.com

Wood Waste Technology heater provides perfect solution for joinery company A Teesside joinery company is saying goodbye to unnecessary heating and waste disposal bills after buying a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Tees Tech Joinery has been established over 13 years, specialising in making quality bespoke joinery projects including kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms from its premises in Billingham. As a joinery manufacturer, the business was spending a great deal of money regularly on skips to remove its wood offcuts and other waste, and gas to heat its 4000ft² workshop during the colder months. On a trip to last year’s W Exhibition at the NEC, managing director of Tees Tech Joinery, Dean Price, learned about the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater, and how it could reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s (WWT) specialist engineers installed a WT5 wood waste heater into the factory last year. Dean says: “We’re delighted to have found Wood Waste Technology and the company’s range of wood waste heaters. Once we understood the

benefits, investing in one was common sense. “We did some calculations and realised that the wood waste heater would easily pay for itself in less than two years because of the savings we’d make on heating and waste disposal costs. In fact, we had the gas heaters removed because we just don’t need them since the wood waste heater was installed, as it generates more than enough heat for our workshop.” WWT offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, WWT is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk.
