Comment At the time of writing, the Brexit issue has still not been resolved. As a divided nation with a divided political establishment, with millions of people marching and protesting and schoolchildren taking the streets campaigning, these are unsettling times for our nation. The House of Commons is currently looking at a range of eight options to help break the Brexit deadlock so we can begin the process of leaving the EU – or not. Hopefully the country can move forward from this embarrassing impasse and we can return to a reasonable, more positive business environment. Against this backdrop of tumult, the business of making furniture and joinery continues – but there is no denying that this period is a frustrating time for many businesses, partially because of a slowdown in larger contracts and projects such as hotels, restaurants and the like, and partially because consumer confidence is at such a low ebb.

Some commentators are confident that the upper tiers of the market will be more resilient, but the volume level is where consumer confidence is at its weakest. How long this will last is anybody’s guess, but there appears to be a widely-held belief that there will be a decent retail bounce, and hopefully, UK furniture and joinery manufacturers will be well placed to take advantage of the opportunities. In this issue, we look forward to the great German gatherings in Cologne and Hannover for Interzum and Ligna respectively. From fittings, fabrics and furniture components to machinery, materials and equipment, these two shows are pivotal events for the furniture, panel and joinery production sectors. Elsewhere, there are features on dust extraction and woodwaste management, sanding and abrasives, and adhesives. I hope you enjoy the issue.

Closing the Gap conference to showcase solution to skills gap The Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) is organising a conference in April to launch Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus (Skills Plus) – a service that is setting out to help close the industry’s skills gap. Since the Bridging the Gap conference in 2017, FIESTA has been working towards a solution that will enable furniture and interiors businesses of all sizes to easily train and recruit employees for all job functions. FIESTA will be presenting this solution, Skills Plus, to industry on Friday 26th April 2019 (10.30am2pm) at Furniture Makers’ Hall, London. Skills Plus offers businesses a specialist apprentice recruitment service, Apprentice Training Agency (ATA) and Levy Management Company. Through Skills Plus, micro and SME non-levy paying employers will be able to access a much wider selection of funded skills training, while large employers can outsource the apprenticeship management to obtain best value for money and real time monitoring from their apprentice levy digital accounts. The conference will include an overview of the training and education landscape since the release of the Mind the Gap report in 2015, which identified a skills gap was emerging. In addition to learning more about Skills Plus, delegates will hear from companies from industry that have introduced

After the decision to bring the exhibition time frame to four days – Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th May 2020 – a new more modern logo has now been launched, 20 years after the rebranding from Interbimall to Xylexpo.

SCA looking to expand capacity SCA is applying for a new environmental permit for the Tunadal Sawmill. Instead of the currently permitted maximum of 600,000m3 of solid-wood products per year, SCA wants to continue expanding the sawmill’s capacity to a maximum of 900,000m3 per year. The application also includes new driers, more storage space and the possibility to generate energy.

Admission to the conference costs £13.19 and this includes refreshments and lunch. To book a place: http://bit.ly/FIESTA

successful apprenticeship programmes. At the end of the conference, delegates will be able to have confidential one-to-one discussions with the Skills Plus team to discuss their training requirements. Managers with responsibility for recruitment and skills development within furniture and furnishing companies as well as existing training providers and educational institutions are strongly encouraged to attend the conference. Gary Baker, managing director of CD (UK) Ltd, and chairman of FIESTA, says: “We are delighted to be working with the Apprentice Management Group to provide Skills Plus as a service, and look forward to showing this solution to the industry. If you have an ageing

workforce, or find it challenging to recruit and retain new or existing workers, this conference is a mustattend event. “Companies in the furniture and interiors industry are coming up against increased competition from other sectors to attract the best school leavers and graduates, which along with an ageing workforce is creating a perfect storm. Researching training providers that have funding for your training needs and understanding how to access funding all takes time. The Skills Plus solution will handle all of this and offer companies advice and guidance on the best training that is available to the sector.” John Henry, director at the Apprenticeship Management Group, explains: “Skills Plus will enable employers in the sector to fill their skills gaps and look to establish training and progression plans both now and well into the future. “Young people entering the furniture and interiors sector and existing employees wishing to up-skill are looking for learning opportunities and career progression, which is precisely what Skills Plus will help them achieve. “I am confident that they will be delighted at the outcomes the Furniture and Interiors Skills Plus team will achieve on their behalf.” www.fiestalearning.com

YTM ceases trading, all jobs lost Bespoke furniture maker YTM Group, based in Castleford, ceased trading in February after being placed into administration. As well as suffering from strong competition, YTM Group had lost a major contract last December leading to severe cash flow problems and making it financially unviable. All 117 staff have been made redundant. Joint administrators Lee Lockwood of Begbies Traynor and Ray Claughton of Rushtons are working to realise the company’s assets, including marketing the company’s large freehold industrial unit in Castleford, along with other sundry business assets.

Dr Mario Kordt strengthens the Weinig management board Following the appointment of Gregor Baumbusch as CEO as of January this year, the supervisory board has appointed 46-year-old Dr Mario Kordt as chief technology officer. Together with chief financial officer, Gerald Schmidt, Dr Kordt will complement the management board which will then consist of three members again.

Building Crafts College students use American red oak for The Useful Table project The Building Crafts College (BCC), a specialist carpentry, stone masonry and construction college in East London, has collaborated with the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) to challenge students with creating a table with sustainable American red oak. AHEC donated two cubic feet of American red oak for each of the 20 students. The students were tasked with using the material to create a ‘useful table’ that had to be considered functional for a particular task within the home environment. The students had creative autonomy over their projects within the broad guidelines, ensuring a wide variety of final projects. “American red oak is the most prolific wood in the American hardwood forests and AHEC would like more designers in Europe to get to know the material, and to experiment with it,” says David Venables, European director of AHEC. “So, we were happy to donate timber to these talented students. Their feedback is very useful to us, and we feel their pieces are a real credit to their hard work and great training at the British Crafts College.” Student Hamish Cock was influenced by the architecture of bridge structures for his low coffee table, reflecting this in the precise angles of the geometric red oak legs that form the base for the glass top. The glass top for Bridge is attached using UV activated glue which dries completely transparent, allowing the grain detail of the red oak to show through the glass. Matthew Hensby has designed a console table, Carve Console, that uses American red oak for the majority of his piece. He also chose

to incorporate American cherry drawers with walnut handles, hidden within an invisible compartment to aid functionality. Matthew used a traditional method of hand carving with a gauge to add a tactile finish to the table. Paul Wones designed the Companion Table as a response to his experience living in a smaller dwelling and having to maximise on space. In order to fulfil his brief, he created a multi-functional table with two removable trays, allowing the table to be used as both a coffee and a dining table. Adam Whitfield created a solid American red oak console table with a wengu insert through the centre. Adam’s Eclipse concept developed from a desire to ‘disrupt’ an otherwise traditional style of furniture. The table is made using solid American red oak with a clever veneer detail along the inside of the slits, to show a contrast between the two different timbers. Matthew Dawson designed a standing desk in response to its rising popularity and a perceived gap in the market for a robust and beautifully crafted option. The Standing Desk has a z-shaped, ergonomic profile with a rounded footrest for added comfort and a slot in the back to work as an integrated cable tidy. Rachel Elston wanted to explore furniture used in the entrance to a home which acts as a transitional point between inside and outside. The indentation at the top plays a functional role as a place to put keys whilst shoes can be stored in the bottom section. Rachel’s Jove is made using solid American red oak with a delicate American soft maple weaving at the base to add contrast.

Sapphire Hales was influenced by the traditional Tansu cabinetry, native to Japan, for her Glade side table. The table’s purpose is to store and serve tea, creating a twist on a traditional coffee table. The hand-crafted brass fences add to the aesthetic of the piece whilst also acting as a functional barrier. The middle shelf is veneered whilst all the other elements are made from solid American red oak.

Jack Bibbings created a coffee table influenced by traditional 1960s’ furniture, with a beautifully crafted rolling tambour, made using solid American red oak interlocking slats. Jack’s T table has a playful nature whilst remaining useful and functional, including a bold blue storage compartment, concealed by the tambour, for tidying away remote controls and books. www.americanhardwood.org

AMS Spring Fest is coming soon!

Advanced Machinery Services is frequently adding new machinery to its range and improving its services, showroom and support for its customers. To that end, over the 15-16th of May, the company is holding its annual AMS Spring Fest at its showroom in Skeffington. During these two days, all companies from the woodworking industry are welcome to the AMS showroom where they will find more than 35 machines on display, with experts on hand demonstrating how the machines work, with customers trying the machines, tooling exhibitions, and experienced staff available for questions, special discounts vouchers and free bar and food all day for all visitors. New heavy-duty multi rip saw The most recent addition to the company’s impressive Wadkin Bursgreen range is a new heavy-

duty multi rip saw – ready to demonstrate to interested visitors. AMS director Steve McGloin says: “We are delighted to show all our visitors our new SJ 95/120 multi rip saw because it was a suggestion from our customers. We like to listen to our customers and ask them what they need in their workshops to have success, and then we try to get it for them.” There will be a large range of planer moulders, high speed

crosscuts, panel saws, many Wadkin classical machines and much more on show. All the machines on display will be available to purchase so it is an advantage for visitors that they will be able to get them in their workshop only days later – and not have to wait for ages, which sometimes happens in this industry. Steve says: “We like to organise at least two exhibitions in our showroom in Leicestershire every year, because we like to invite our customers to our home to thank them once more for trusting us and to show them all the new machines and services that we are adding to our range. It’s always nice to see them and have a chat, face-to-face, not always through email or phone – we like to take care of customers and offer them the best engineers, services and support.”

A Liskeard-based furniture manufacturer is the latest company to be supported by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Investment Fund (CIOSIF). Peadidit, set up in 2018, has successfully secured £25,000 in funding, which will allow the company to increase production capabilities with the purchase of new equipment and will also enable it to scale-up its team, in order to meet the growing demand for its products.

Thirsk furniture makers’ trail A trail following a route of the Yorkshire town’s seven furniture makers has been created in Thirsk. The trail takes in seven woodworking businesses around the town. The businesses featuring on the trail include Treske, Coxwold, Beaver, Carthouse, Graham Duncalf, Old Mill and Squirrel Justin Bartlett, MD of Treske (pictured) says: “The area is rich in cabinet making skills and has a wealth of furniture making companies with workshops and showrooms. The concentration of woodwork skills in our area is special and we need to look after it.” The Trail was originally started in 1990 and is supported by Hambleton District Council’s vibrant market towns initiative.

Big Shots is celebrating 25 years in 2019 Big Shots, The Furniture Makers’ Company’s annual clay pigeon shoot, is celebrating 25 years of raising money for the furnishing industry’s only dedicated charity in 2019, and this year’s event is going to be bigger than ever before. For the first time in eight years, the fundraiser is returning to Holland and Holland, Middlesex, one of the UK’s premier shooting destinations, on Wednesday, June 12th this year. Big Shots is once again being generously sponsored by Furniture Village and organised by Charlie Harrison, director of multi-channel. In addition to the much-loved shooting competition, guests can pay to shoot in Holland and Holland’s indoor rifle range which uses the latest Schiesskino cinematographic technology – a UK first and exclusive to Holland and Holland. There will be an auction, raffle, games and the organiser promises a surprise or two! Charlie Harrison, director of

multichannel at Furniture Village, says: “Over the past 25 years Big Shots has become one of the most popular events in the industry calendar, bringing together friends and industry colleagues from around the country to enjoy a funpacked day of clay shooting with just a hint of friendly competition. “The day never fails to entertain, while highlighting the importance of raising money in support of

Derek Statham, works and service manager at Leitz Tooling UK, passed away on 21st February after a short illness.

Nic Snow, advertising account manager at Gearing Media Group who worked on Furniture and Joinery Production, passed away on 17th February following an extended period of illness.

Derek was dedicated to a quality and service from which both Leitz Tooling UK and its customers benefited over his 38 years with the company. He was a major part of the Leitz UK expansion and smooth operation across the country and was highly respected by managers and employees alike.

Although the staff at Gearing Media Group only came to know Nic for the last two years of his life, such was the spirit and character of the man, he will live long in the memory.

“Nic was a determined individual, who was keen to lead as full a life as possible. He clearly loved his partner and children – and his passion for impressive motorbikes was a passion

John Legg, editorial director at Gearing Media Group, remembers Nic fondly: “Nic’s short tenure provided a contribution that was both professional and personal. His working life before he joined the company was across a range of media and tech companies and his notable contributions included sharpening our focus on our data and the digital side of the business.

our industry charity so that it can encourage young people to pursue careers in our sector and help those people who have worked alongside us and fallen on hard times. As always, Furniture Village is delighted to support Big Shots and we look forward to celebrating this milestone.” Jonny Westbrooke, CEO of The Furniture Makers’ Company, says: “Big Shots has been a highlight in

the furnishing industry calendar for 25 years. That’s a quarter of a century of raising money for the industry charity and we’d like to thank our corporate member Furniture Village for once again supporting it. “We fully intend on this year’s event being the most enjoyable and well-attended in its history and planning has been under way for some time. Big Shots is perfect for entertaining clients and suppliers or treating employees. Whether you’re an expert shot or a complete novice, every Big Shot in the furnishing industry should be there.” The price of an individual shooter is £250 + VAT with a team of four costing £995 + VAT. he indulged regularly.” Lisa Williams, advertising account manager on Furniture & Joinery Production, worked closely with Nic and recalls her colleague: “Nic was a big character, a kind-spirited man always looking for the upside in life, despite his considerable health issues. In fact, he was one of the happiest unwell individuals I’ve ever known! His zest for life was reflected in his humour, maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but he knew how to find humour in any situation.” Sam Horscroft, who works on Furniture News, also recalls Nic’s fun personality: “Nic was a vivacious character, whose sardonic sense of humour and lust for life will be sadly missed. He was a valued member of our team.”

Simon Liddell, Leitz Tooling UK managing director said: “Derek was a remarkable man. He was dedicated to the success of the company and, in particular, to the service side of the operations. He was held in high regard by senior management at our Head Office in Germany as well as the UK staff. Our UK-wide team gave Derek a standing ovation during his acceptance of his long service award at our sales conference in January – an emotional experience for all, especially Derek. Knowing him personally, he made a difference in the lives of many people, both here in the company, and in his private life.” Brian Maddox, national sales manager for Leitz Tooling UK added, “I worked with Derek for nearly four decades and knew him not only as a great work colleague, but as a friend. He was passionate about everything he did, helping many of our staff develop into the valued members of our team we

have today. He believed in them when many would not have. On personnel development, he was a truly inspiring person.” Derek’s team is committed to build on the foundation he laid down and will continue to grow its success as a tribute to him. Simon concluded, “Derek helped us develop a culture that we are proud of, and one that is unrivalled in the industry. He will be missed, and the workshop and offices seem empty without him. Our sincere sympathies go to his wife Yvette and their family on behalf of the whole company.” Please contact Leitz’s Harlow office regarding condolences and charity donations in Derek’s name.

AXYZ International unveils its rebranding initiative Leading CNC machinery supplier, AXYZ International, has announced a rebranding and restructuring initiative. It embraces a change in company name, a new corporate identity and realigned marketing strategy. Implemented by the parent company in Canada, the rebranding programme follows acquisition of the US-based waterjet cutting

1/2 page landscape.indd 1

FP306_PagesMike.indd 12

systems company WARDJet in 2018. This signalled AXYZ International’s entry into the waterjet cutting sector and precipitated the decision to carry out a total rebranding programme. In consequence, since the beginning of February, AXYZ International has been trading as AXYZ Automation Group, a name that recalls the company’s inception in the 1990s when it was known as AXYZ Automation. More significantly, however, the rebrand serves as an indication of how the company has evolved over the years, with a much expanded product offering, greater market diversification and a high receptivity of the AXYZ brand by the many industries it supports. President of AXYZ Automation Group, Luke Hansen-Macdonald comments: “The rebrand reflects our commitment to realigning manufacturing output in line with the demand for increased automation and the need to provide alternative solutions to

traditional CNC routing systems where these are deemed to be more appropriate. The name of the company and its corporate identity may have changed but its values remain the same.” Supporting the rebranding programme is a visually stronger and more distinctive threedimensional logo and tagline, rendered in an equally prominent dark blue and light blue colour combination. This will give AXYZ Automation Group a new, stronger and readily identifiable corporate identity within the industries it operates and those it plans to exploit in the future. In welcoming the rebrand, UK managing director Mark Sweeney comments: “These changes will enhance the strong presence that the AXYZ brand has built in the UK and Ireland over the years and help the shared objectives of developing new market opportunities for future business growth and prosperity.” Endorsing these sentiments, vice-president (market development) Robert Marshall adds: “The rebrand will help both existing and potential new customers to better understand and identify with what the AXYZ Automation Group now represents and how it will continue to support their business objectives by enabling access to a much wider product offering and new technologies.” www.axyz.co.uk

Wood Waste Technology working hard to maximise RHI payments for customers Wood Waste Technology has recently installed one of its biomass hot water boiler systems into a company in Essex that was looking to reduce its waste disposal and heating bills whilst benefiting from the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. A state-of-the-art wood waste boiler was installed into Anglian Vehicle Linings Ltd, a specialist ply-lining vehicle and accessory company that has been operating in Clacton-onSea since 1998. When Anglian Vehicle Linings moved to new larger premises in 2017, managing director David Byatt realised it was time to look into a biomass boiler, to heat the new workshop and reduce some of the business waste disposal costs. David explains: “As well as the ply-lining kits we supply and fit to vehicles, we build a lot of plywood racking systems for vans, so end up with a substantial amount of waste wood, and the amount of waste increases the busier the business gets. “I’d read about the benefits of biomass boilers, then realised our business could qualify for some of the Renewable Heat Incentive payments. That’s when I got in touch with Wood Waste Technology, to find out more about its biomass boilers that provide space heating for the factory, plus heating and domestic hot water for the rest of the building.” The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) offers substantial financial benefits to companies that invest in new biomass technology. For example, companies with successful RHI applications could earn around £11,500-£17,500 a year (with a cost of living increase each year) for 20 years, dependent upon a number of other factors. Wood Waste Technology’s impressive boiler, the WWT199/209 is Enhanced Capital Allowance listed, and remains one of the most efficient wood waste boilers available in the UK, having been designed and tested to BSEN3035-2012, the highest standard for efficiency and emissions. The boiler has been independently tested at 92.4% efficiency, allowing it to qualify for the Energy Technology List (ETL). Businesses that purchase products listed on the ETL benefit from 100% first year enhanced capital allowances on their expenditure. The WWT199/209 was also the first in the UK to be declared fully compliant with the RHI scheme without the need for additional flue gas filtration equipment (significantly reducing the investment and on-going maintenance costs of an RHI compliant boiler). The boiler offers the largest possible heat output under the Environment Agency’s U4 and D6 permit (under 50kg/hr) plus it does

FP306_PagesMike.indd 14

not require a local authority part B permit (England & Wales) which saves money on the initial investment as well as the yearly testing requirements. More information available at www.gov.uk/local-authority-environmentalpermit. As a Carbon Trust Accredited Supplier, Wood Waste Technology’s boiler can also operate in clean air zones under the Clean Air Act, as it meets the two highest standards in emissions regulations, so is able to be used in even the sternest of jurisdictions in the UK. Wood Waste Technology also has a 100% success rate in RHI applications for companies burning chipboard and MDF. The high efficiency of the boiler helps it provide up to 20-25% more heat from your wood.

of the waste we produce, saving us over £30,000 a year on skip hire. The guys are happy in their nice warm workshop, and we’ve already received around £13,000 in RHI payments to date. I’d definitely recommend this to other businesses who generate a significant amount of wood waste, it just makes financial sense. “We can’t thank the team at Wood Waste Technology enough for how they helped us maximise the financial benefits available from the RHI scheme. They’ve been brilliant to deal with all through the process, from quotation to installation. “They’ve always been there to answer any questions we’ve had, and we were so impressed how they were able to access our boiler remotely through a team viewer, which was very helpful

Companies with successful RHI applications could earn around £11,500-£17,500 a year

After a site-survey and quote from Wood Waste Technology, David realised that with the benefit of free heating for the workshop, the chance to save on waste disposal fees by being able to burn the majority of his waste, plus the generous RHI payments, it was a sensible business investment. However, the race was on to purchase, as at the time a decision was made, a drop in the RHI tariff was imminent. Although it was tight, Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers pulled out all the stops to finish everything by the deadline, to allow Anglian Vehicle Lining to claim the highest rate of RHI possible. David and his team are delighted with the new boiler, especially its flexibility and user-friendly features, such as how the boiler can run from 30% up to full capacity, so can be turned down when the factory is empty to make better use of resources and give the company a greater return on each kilogram of wood waste. David says: “Our waste disposal costs have reduced dramatically, as we can now burn 80%

and re-assuring in the early days whilst we were getting to grips with the new system.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions has helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

Surface Design Show 2019 This year’s Surface Design Show, which took place at London’s Business Design Centre from 5-7th February, provided a unified platform to more surface material and lighting specialists than ever before. More than 150 exhibitors from across Europe put their products on display and over 5200 architects, designers and specifiers from 47 countries visited to explore the variety of interior and exterior surface materials, lighting design, development and innovation. Over the course of the show, there was a packed schedule of panel discussions, CPDs and talks, as well as trend forecast. Presenters included: New London Architecture and RIBA who hosted the Opening Night Debate; Chris Dyson who presented the PechaKucha Evening; Hannah Malein of Colour Hive; Oliver Heath of Oliver Heath Design and Daniel Hopwood representing Design Guild Mark – all kept visitors engaged as they illuminated on ways of thinking about materials, current industry issues and trends. According to the organiser, 80% of the 2019 show’s visitors hail from the architecture and design sector, with 20 of the top 30 AJ100 architectural firms represented and around a third were visiting with a live project in mind. Since 2013, the show has hosted the Surface Design Awards, now recognised as one of the most respected events in the design calendar. The 2019 awards received 197 entries from 22 countries, including America, Italy, China and India. In a ceremony held over breakfast, the beautiful new Maggie’s Centre St Barts, London was declared the Supreme Winner, capturing the hearts and minds of

FP306_PagesMike.indd 16

the stellar panel of judges from the world of architecture and design. A beacon of design in the charity sector, the building by Steven Holl Architects was shortlisted in the Public Building Exterior category, gaining acclaim from the judges, including architect Christophe Egret of Studio Egret West, who stated: “You really feel that a person dealing with cancer might feel elevated in this space.” Of course, most visitors went to the show to discover new trends and ideas. Trend expert Sally Angharad presented Surface Spotlight Live, a mini-exhibition titled One Of a Kind featuring a series of thought-provoking and innovative materials that go beyond aesthetics to promote meaningful experiences. Exhibits included tiles made

of 90% atmospheric carbon (madeofair.com) and a terrazzostyle board made using waste woodchip (foresso.co.uk). Significant trends identified by Sally Angharad include: immersive colours, charred effects, weathered metals, nurturing surfaces, clay pinks and marbling techniques. Both Stone Gallery, supported

by Stone Federation GB, and Light School, supported by the Institution of Lighting Professionals, provided dedicated forums for visitors and designers to touch, and compare and learn about innovative lighting and natural stone products. New at this year’s Surface Design Show was the New Talent area curated by chief creative director at Trendease International, Jennifer Castoldi. The exhibitors here included Enis Kiev, whose plastic tiles are made from post-consumer plastic warmed then compressed into multi-coloured marble and PHEE, who turns sea grasses that wash up on Greek beaches into a beautiful, organic material that can be used to make both surface materials for furniture, floors and accessories. New Talent exhibitor, Tanya Vacarda, of Vacarda Designs, summed up her experience as being a wholly positive one: “The show was great. I have got a few custom orders already and lots of interest so far. More importantly, and more exciting than anything, I have met awesome people, made contacts and got tons of ideas for future projects, material uses and collaborations … fashion, table surfaces, fusion wall coverings, kitchen units … the sky’s the limit!“ www.surfacedesignshow.com

18 New products In a world that is moving towards flexible and batch one production, nesting technology is certainly a focal point for furniture manufacturers. The possibility to carry out a great number of machining operations and also to manage also shaped pieces, allows producers a greater flexibility to carry out most operations on a single numericallycontrolled machine.

The NeXting Generation has begun With the benefit of nesting there are some limitations to traditional nesting machines. The three main issues that are strictly connected with the nesting process are spoil board management, productivity – when compared with beam saws) and holding capacity on small pieces. SCM has designed, developed and tested innovative solutions to overcome these issues for the customers and gives them the opportunity to improve their productivity and flexibility at the same time. The results of work done in recent years is reflected in the new NeXting CNC machines Morbidelli x200 and x400. A spoilboard is a necessary requirement for nesting as it would not be possible to work directly on the machine’s table without damaging it. However, this brings with it a series of complexities that must be managed by the operators – starting from the skimming, up to the change of spoilboards that have ended their useful life, or the removal of the spoilboard, when there is a need to work with pods or jigs that must be fixed on the machine’s table. The NeXting Generation of SCM machines has exclusive and innovative features which allow the customer to manage the spoilboard in the easiest possible way, simply not removing it as previously required: executing horizontal drilling on the panel or placing vacuum cups on the table are operations which are involving nothing else but dedicated units with a great saving of time in managing the machine thus increasing flexibility and productivity. Other important innovations introduced concentrates on the ability of the machine to hold down also the smallest workpieces while machining. The optimisation of the vacuum holding capacity has been, for SCM, one of the main focuses during the development of the new Morbidelli series.

FP306_PagesMike.indd 18

Like many other nesting machines, the new Morbidelli x200 and x400 can be equipped with a zoned worktable that enables suction areas to be closed when not in use. These are the only machines where it is possible to have the new X-Vacuum system, a real dynamic vacuum activation development, an innovative and automatic feature that carries the vacuum right where it’s needed. A new labelling system and cutting speed up to 50m/min will allow SCM customers to reach a productivity like never seen before on a nesting machine. And that’s not all: like the cars many people drive every day, it is possible to use the new Morbidelli series in smooth, neutral or dynamic mode – the equivalent of comfort, drive and sport – in order to quickly customise the execution of programs. Years of development and investment have led to the new Morbidelli x200/x400. Very high performance, great configurability and a competitive price allows SCM to create a machine tailormade for each customer. 0115 977 0044 www.scmgroup.com

Movac and Sayerlack – the future is green – what colour is yours? For 65 years Sayerlack has been at the forefront of development of innovative wood solutions and for over 25 years Movac has used its expertise in the wood finishing industry to supply UK customers with these high technology products backed with premium levels of technical support. As the challenges for coatings requirements change with greater emphasis on sustainable products

FP306_PagesMike.indd 20

with less environmental impact, Sayerlack is at the forefront of coatings developments as well as assessing the impact that its activities and products have. With its GAIA initiative, Sayerlack has created an integrated programme of environmental sustainability consisting of three segments: AIR – by using the most advanced technologies Sayerlack is reducing environmental impact by using raw materials that are from non-fossil sources. This approach focuses on specially allocated bio-resources and specific bio-renewable sources that are clearly defined and traced via the C14 method. AQUA – Sayerlack has created a range of odour-free, low hazard products containing low monomer content isocyanates or based on alternative isocyanate-free NOT-ISO PU technology. EARTH – this project has developed ready-to-use, high solid/ dry residue products that have a low volatile organic compound content as they do not need to be diluted. It also encompasses the Hydroplus range of water-based coatings. Aesthetical appearance is key

when coating furniture and the Sayerlack Hydroplus range of water-based coatings can be used to produce finishes where appearance and tactile properties are indistinguishable from those traditionally achieved with solventbased coatings. These high technology products also ensure the same kind of mechanical strength and chemical resistance as two-pack polyurethane finishes. With the drive towards a higher level of environmental responsibility from users and end clients alike the call for furniture to be coated in a

more environmentally-harmonious way is becoming paramount both during the coating stage and the final installation phase. Specifiers and applicators are choosing coatings with as few harmful substances as possible to meet this need, and as always, Sayerlack remains at the forefront of this research. Make fuss free RTA assembly a reality Cabinet hardware expert Titus has launched a new service dedicated to helping manufacturers of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture make their products faster and easier to assemble, thereby enhancing customer perceptions and boosting sales. The groundbreaking Titus CAF Service uses a simple formula, developed after painstaking research by Titus, to assign a Consumer Assembly Friendliness (CAF) score to items of furniture. This not only allows ease of assembly to be accurately quantified, but also reveals areas where improvements can be made, often at little or no cost to the

furniture manufacturer. “RTA furniture has a lot to recommend it, but it suffers from having a reputation for being difficult and time consuming to assemble, which undoubtedly holds back sales,” said Gary McMahon of Titus. “Our CAF Service has been specifically developed to help furniture manufacturers overcome this problem, thereby upgrading the public perception of RTA and allowing sales of them to grow to reach their full potential.” The Titus CAF Score takes into account the total number of parts needed to assemble an item, the number of actions it

takes to assemble the parts, and the number of different types of parts. Scores can be produced for complete items of furniture, for subassemblies and even components themselves, allowing simplicity of assembly to be examined at every level. The new Titus CAF Service will help furniture manufacturers to calculate the scores for their own products, or can even calculate scores on behalf of the manufacturer. In either case, the service will also provide detailed recommendations for improvement. A typical recommendation might be to replace a conventional

dowel-and-cam connection with a single-part integrated connector. This would reduce the number of types of parts needed and also the number of actions needed to assemble the parts, so this small change would provide a significant reduction in the CAF Score. Titus is offering its new CAF Service to all manufacturers of RTA furniture, whether or not they are existing users of Titus products. Further information about the service, including a detailed explanation of the CAF scoring process, can be found on the company’s website. https://cabinet.Titusplus.com/ uk/en/caf/

At the cutting edge for over 50 years

Raukantex pro edgeband with 100% polymer functional layer – for a true zero joint finish

From the introduction of mass-produced plain white edgeband in the 1960s, designed to simply cover the open sides of chipboard, through to recreating wood-effect décors in the 70s or multiplex- and glass-effect profiles in the 90s, it is easy to see how edgebanding has come a long way over the past 50 years. As a polymer specialist, REHAU has moved with these transitions every step of the way, pioneering with design and developing cuttingedge technology. Today, REHAU is one of the leading edgeband manufacturers in the world. Through working closely with all leading board and machine manufacturers, REHAU has created the Standard Stock Program – an expansive range of edgeband, which consists of over 1800 colours and décors in thousands of variants and all available from stock. This has made REHAU the ideal, innovative partner, offering flexible solutions for all setups, from independent carpenters and joiners to the large-scale industrial-size furniture manufacturers. REHAU’s Raukantex edgeband range has been developed for all commonly-used processing methods, whether you are using a handheld edgebander and require a primed edgeband for use with hot melt adhesive, or a top-of-the-range laser, hot-air or NIR machine for a true zero joint finish. The Standard Stock Program has the perfect edgeband for every requirement –

FP306_PagesMike.indd 30

without compromise. Today the trend in furniture design is moving towards individuality and character, especially in areas such as living spaces and kitchen interiors. REHAU is able to produce digital printed edgeband designs with a long print repeat: whether in matt, soft-touch, high-gloss, and metallic or in a textured surface finish.

Rehau Standard Stock Program

REHAU’s polymer glass surface material, Rauvisio crystal, has undergone continuous development over the past couple of years. Originally a small collection of gloss colours, it has grown to an extensive range of on-trend designs. With décors that imitate natural materials such as stone, it is now possible to bring any design vision to life. Of course all colours and décors are available in gloss and matt finish with matching edgeband – for that seamless finish. So whether the requirement is just for edgeband or complete components, designers and manufacturers can find it all in one place. REHAU can offer all this and more from an extensive product portfolio. Visitors to Interzum are invited to the company’s stand to check out the latest trends and additions to its product ranges, including new edgeband collections, new surface colours and a brand new roller shutter system. There is also the opportunity to take a sneak peek into the apartment of the future in an exclusive area on the stand where REHAU will be showing new developments in digital printing and design development of edgeband, surface material and a joint venture in the world of solid surface materials with a new partner. Talk to one of REHAU’s UK product experts at Interzum – or simply to get inspired. Visit REHAU on stand E030, F031 & F030 in hall 8.1. www.rehau.co.uk/furniture

Pytha presents version 24 at Ligna With Version 24 of its 3D-CAD System, Pytha will present a full solution for all needs of the woodworking industry. Pytha has been enhanced by many powerful functions, providing a faster and more efficient workflow. The Pytha modeller now offers a faster plot sheet function, which allows users to rotate details and an explosion view, without actually exploding the 3D models in the design. Panoramic images can now also be calculated in the Pytha modeller. Without further editing, users can view the resulting image file on a computer, smartphone or tablet using the standard panoramic apps. Version 24 sets standards with a new Pytha parametric design. It is significantly more powerful and flexible. Another new function is the Pytha Rib Function, allowing frames for counters, curved walls, round seating areas etc. to be created very quickly and conveniently in the Curves menu. The Smart Equalizer function will let users easily adapt doors, shelves and drawers of different widths to match. Users can now personalise the whole user interface. MyPytha previously allowed you to compile your own menu. To simplify the Pytha interface, simply hide individual functions, that are not needed. Last but not least: it is now possible to switch languages while constructing a scene – without restarting the software. It is a great tool for the collaboration of multilingual teams. Giardina Group unveils its Excimer technology at Ligna After the success obtained in the laboratories of all the most important international paint manufacturers, Giardina Group is set to present the first GST ZeroGloss dryer, ready to enter the most severe production processes.

FP306_PagesMike.indd 34

Thanks to the Excimer technology, Giardina says it is possible to obtain super matt surfaces, a much higher chemical and mechanical resistance, a perfect adhesion of the varnishing product to the

support, and the maximum ease in cleaning operations on any type of surface. In recent years, matt finishes are becoming highly successful, but the traditional systems to obtain

them, or the use of silica particles, made the final result particularly sensitive to scratches, abrasions, shocks, and a fragility directly proportional to the amount of matt product present in the paint. The Excimer technology makes it possible to solve this long-standing problem – thanks to paints with special characteristics and to the use of special lamps that act in a nitrogen-rich environment, the surface structure can be reticulated to obtain a zero gloss surface, resistant, without damages to the support. Giardina cites its many advantages: an extremely matt surface (from 1.5 to 5 gloss), a softness to the touch, an increase in abrasion resistance up to five times that obtained with traditional painting systems, a higher chemical resistance, an anti-fingerprint surface, resistance to yellowing, and a possibility to obtain surfaces with a smooth and uniform threedimensional effect. Advantages involve the production of furniture, kitchens and floors in general but also different materials, including building components, cement, fibre cement, glass, plastics or composites and metal. 0039 03178 30801 www.giardinagroup.com

Storage expert OHRA racks up 40 years As a manufacturer of storage and racking systems, OHRA specialises in the storage of long and heavy warehouse goods. OHRA is a European market leader and recognised as an key specialist for cantilever racks today. The company says that its pallet and cantilever racking systems have established the industry standard, particularly in the construction materials trade and in wood processing. Thanks to a pronounced customer focus and individual special solutions, OHRA shelving solutions are meanwhile found in opera houses as well as in automobile recyclers and marinas. In 2019, the company celebrates its 40-year anniversary with the

FP306_PagesMike.indd 46

slogan: 40 years of OHRA – we will rack you! The company’s roots reach as far back as the 1960s, when the company founder Ottokar Hölscher complemented his lift truck dealership with sales of racking manufactured by third parties. Soon the company began producing its own racking systems. This included cantilever racks, which covered the market demand for racks storing long goods. OHRA patented the hook-in, self-locking cantilever arm, which is standard in cantilever rack systems today. Thanks to this development, the height of the cantilever arm is adjusted quickly and without the

need for tools; the cantilever arm yields under impact, protecting the racking, the lift truck, and, above all, the goods. In 1979, Ottokar Hölscher hived off the racking division into an independent company – the birth of OHRA

Regalanlagen GmbH. Today, all load-bearing components of the OHRA racks – whether pallet or cantilever racks – are manufactured from hot-rolled steel plate girder profiles. This allows for high load capacities while keeping the design slim. With these efficient racking systems, OHRA has taken root particularly in industries such as the construction material trade or wood processing. “In addition, we have always offered special solutions for diverse industries – also thanks to our comprehensive accessories programme, which equips our racks for the most diverse tasks,” Thomas Jerschkewitz, the OHRA sales manager for Germany, points out. Thus, OHRA racking solutions are found in opera houses as well as in automobile recyclers or marinas (for winter storage of yachts). OHRA also meets the trend towards building rack clad buildings and automatic solutions with its own project department which accompanies larger construction works. “With this customer focus we offer a decisive advantage in comparison to our competitors,” says Raymond Wolsey, export sales manager. OHRA has an optimistic outlook for the future. If the economy should cool down, Dr Andreas Hölscher, son of the company founder and current director of OHRA, views this with confidence: “Thanks to our market position, we have always emerged stronger from crisis. The markets always reduce and remove the unsuccessful, but we stand on solid foundations.” 00 49 2237/64-0 info@ohra.de www.ohra.de

Dust extraction and woodwaste management 49

Wood Waste Control reports strong interest in shredder and briquette press ranges Wood Waste Control (Engineering) Ltd has reported a strong response from the market to its new range of shredders and briquetters. Wood Waste Control is one of Europe’s leading dust extraction system specialists, and managing director Reg Gareppo says: “They are proving a winner with customers. The shredders are designed to shred all kinds of waste material, including hard and softwoods, chipboard, OSB and plywood panels, as well as construction timbers. “We can even tailor the shredder to deal with other materials such as papers, cardboards, metals and rubber.” As standard the new WWC shredders include fast hydraulics, profile rotor, a second row of knives, control cabinet with Siemens plc, automatic star/Delta switch, automatic stop when the hopper is empty, removable exhausting channel, and performance-enhancing pacing of hydraulic sliders. A wide range of models are available, from 0.4m3 hopper capacity with 15kW motor, through to a model with 2.5m3 hopper capacity and 30-75kW motor. The sturdy steel construction of the WWC grinders guarantees constant quality in continuous operation. WWC shredders are fitted with a slowly rotating profile solid steel rotor (260mm or 360mm diameter) which is mounted on the sturdy machine base. Reg Gareppo adds: “The shredder knives are available in various designs for all kinds of material. They feature low wear and can be rotated several times before they have to be replaced.” The company’s new range of briquetting presses offer a choice of

throughput from 30-350kg/h. All models feature energy-efficient operation, a coolable sleeve, low wear and tear costs and an endless briquette line. 01628 525290 www.woodwastecontrol.co.uk

Is your business’s waste management giving you optimal economic results? Employee-owned packaging supplier, Kite Packaging, has taken its environmental waste management a step further thanks to the business’s new waste compacters. Kite’s new additions allow businesses to effectively sort waste at its source, bundling and downsizing waste levels in-house which has a knock-on effect for UK waste management as it reduces the environmental impact from businesses through minimising the waste sent to landfill. These innovative systems are the ideal economical solutions to save time, money and space for industries across the board. With four compact balers to choose from, organisations can find the machine that’s most suited to their operational requirements. The versatile range of waste balers offers efficient compaction for different volume day-to-day

FP306_PagesMike.indd 49

operation and thanks to their innovative features such as an integrated kicker, that extracts the bale out once it is formed, companies can reduce costs and increase profits whilst allocating

less time for the job. Workforces can eradicate manually flattening and cramming waste into bins, as these balers compact the waste in one swift movement, therefore removing time-consuming inconsistencies that manual, disjointed waste management brings. They can effectively compact cardboard, plastic, paper, textile and even food waste, all into one small, compact bale which can be disposed of efficiently and in the right way, therefore also encouraging recycling in the workplace. These new waste compactors give a substantial return on investment as they can bring significant cash savings on landfill taxes and waste collection as well as reducing the manual labour costs. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

52 Dust extraction and woodwaste management Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has installed a complete dust extraction system, including external filter unit and energy-saving Ecogate system, for Lincolnshire fit-out specialist NH Shopfitting & Interiors.

DCS filter for top shopfitter Located on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, NH Shopfitting & Interiors provides a tailored service to clients across the retail, commercial and leisure sectors, but the company has become recognised for its specialist work in the fit-out of petrol forecourt shop interiors, food outlets and washrooms. Established over 20 years ago by MD Nicholas Hunt, the company has enjoyed exceptional growth over recent years, and has partnered with key site operators to meet the growing demand for customer-focused convenience and food service outlets at UK filling stations. Joinery manufacture is at the heart of the company’s activities, and the growth in sales has necessitated investment in both machinery and premises. NH Shopfitting now operates from a 4000m2 site, with workshops and offices, a generous parking and loading area, and a joinery production space that has increased by 50% since the business moved there in 2014. Ray Townley, area sales manager for DCS, visited the site to discuss NH Shopfitting’s growing dust extraction requirements with project manager Stephen

Jordan and, as Ray explains: “Dust extraction was previously provided by several stand-alone bag filter units located adjacent to production machinery but, as the production area expanded and new machines were installed, the ageing bag units had finally reached their limitations.” The system design for NH Shopfitting was going to be relatively straightforward. The old bag units would be scrapped and replaced with a high-efficiency, externally-sited and ATEX-approved filter unit with a 30kW direct drive extraction fan, new FastClip ductwork system routed to all the machines and, as recommended by the ATEX regulations, a CARZ back-pressure isolation valve which, in the event of an explosion in the filter unit, prevents the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling from the filter, back along ductwork, and into the factory. NH Shopfitting operates a typical range of high-powered machinery including a number of saws, an edgebander, a heavy-duty widebelt sander, and a high-speed HolzHer CNC machine. However, and again typical of fit-out joinery manufacturing, constantly varying production demands dictate that all the machines are never in operation at the same time.

DCS installed an NFSZ3000 2HJLR rotary valve filter unit with 18,345m3/hr air volume capacity

“Having surveyed the premises and reviewed the extraction requirements with Stephen, this installation appeared to be a shoein for the inclusion of an Ecogate

controller and automatic dampers,” says Ray Townley, “so I agreed with Stephen that I would visit again with Ian Rayner, Ecogate’s sales manager.

“As anticipated, Ian Rayner was able to demonstrate that incorporating Ecogate technology into the system would significantly reduce the amount of electricity consumed by the extraction fan; effectively halving the extraction system running costs.” Ian’s calculations showed that including Ecogate in the system would generate sufficient savings to recover the additional capital expenditure in less than three years and, in addition, installing the Ecogate system negated the need to include Star-Delta starters; reducing the base cost of the extraction system. “Installing Ecogate technology optimises fan speed, in real-time, to

exactly match extraction demand,” says Ian. “At NH Shopfitting, the maximum air volume capacity requirement is almost 15% less than the total air volume would be with the fan extracting continuously from all machines – as it would be without Ecogate – and the average volume requirement is reduced by a minimum of 22%.” DCS installed an NFSZ3000 2HJLR rotary valve filter, with patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and a reverse air regeneration fan provides efficient filter cleaning. Side access doors, reached via an elevated gangway, allow access to the filter media for inspection and maintenance, and the waste dust is delivered

pressure-free from the filter unit, via rotary valve, into a covered skip. “We were impressed by the professional service DCS provided from start to finish”, says Stephen. “We’ve now got an efficient, cost-effective system that we

can virtually forget about; we’ll be making savings on electricity costs for years to come and in winter we can heat the factory with clean, warm air from the filter unit.” 0800 040 7116 www.dcslimited.co.uk An elevated gangway gives access for maintenance, and clean warm air is returned to the factory in winter

56 Sanding and abrasives

Mirka DEOS Delta is flawless from corner to corner Mirka is expanding its revolutionary Direct Electric Orbital Sander (DEOS)* range with the addition of the new DEOS Delta. Its ergonomic and innovative iron shape design allows the user to access hard-toreach areas easily and efficiently, while reducing the stress on arms and hands, and delivering a flawless smooth finish from corner to corner.

FP306_PagesMike.indd 56

The Delta’s low profile, of only 10cm, ensures it is closer to the surface at any angle allowing for increased control of the sanding process, even during long periods of use. With the Delta weighing less than 1kg, the research and development team in Jeppo, Finland has ensured that there is less strain on the user’s muscles, leading to a reduction in the risk of arm fatigue.

The sander also incorporates a powerful brushless motor and 3mm orbit for more effective removal of stock, while keeping vibrations at a low level to minimise the risk of HAVs. Additionally, when the DEOS Delta is combined with Mirka’s net abrasives and a dust extraction unit, it provides a consistent scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment. The Mirka DEOS Delta also includes Mirka’s innovative digital solutions that run through an integrated vibration sensor and bluetooth connectivity that enables the user to access the vibration, speed and usage data easily through the myMirka app. This means users can understand how the tool is being used on a day-today basis and the ways in which it can be utilised more efficiently. Pete Sartain, national sales manager industrial of Mirka UK, says: “The research and development team is in constant communication both internally and externally to understand what the market is looking for, so this addition is the next phase in the

evolution of the DEOS product range. The addition of the new Mirka DEOS Delta meets a gap in the market as users are looking for a lightweight, powerful and versatile delta sander and we are confident customers will benefit from its technological, health and safety and performance attributes from its first use.” www.mirka.com

58 Sanding & abrasives When Alfreton-based Sylmar Technology came to replace its ageing wide-belt sander, the £14.5m turnover company left no stone unturned in its search to find the very best machine for its requirements. The evaluation process included all the leading brands in the sander market and Sylmar ran lots of tests on the machines to see how they performed.

Sylmar Technology selects Homag Sandteq W-300 wide-belt sander Sylmar’s managing director, Peter Holt, takes up the story: “For us, a quality sanding machine is a vital part of our production process. We sand a large volume of solid surface sheet material and both the finish quality and speed of manufacturing are critically important to the success of our business. “Consequently, when it came to sourcing a replacement wide-belt sander we wanted to take our time and ensure that we found the very

best solution for our operation. In the end, the decision to invest in a Homag Sandteq W-300 was unanimous. It’s the first time we’ve bought machinery from Homag, but from the word go their professionalism, knowledge and positive attitude won us over.” Homag Sandteq W-300: a first class solution “The machine itself is first class. Of all the brands we tested it clearly outperformed the competition. The

W-300 is a superbly engineered machine, as you would expect from a German manufacturer. The finish quality we achieve with this machine is far better than anything else we tested. “From the first time we saw the machine at LIGNA, to sending product for testing in Germany and visiting the manufacturing plant out there, Homag couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating. Their expert engineers worked closely with us to

agree the specification that would give us the precise performance we needed. We settled on a cross belt Q-Head, a wide belt H-Head and an additional cross belt Q-Head for premier finishing. “When everything was agreed, they also sorted out a three year finance deal through the company’s own Homag Finance division; it made life very easy for us. Not surprisingly, given its high performance and engineering standards, the Sandteq W-300 wasn’t the cheapest solution. Delivery time was also a little longer than some of the other manufacturers; the wait and additional cost, however, have been well worth it. “As you’d expect from the Germans, the installation went like clockwork. The machine was installed and commissioned within three days and the Homag engineer then spent another three days providing comprehensive training for our operatives.” The Sandteq W-300 wide-belt sander The W-300 series offers an all-round solution for small and medium-sized carpentry and joinery companies. It is ideal for calibration, high gloss, veneer and paint sanding. With seven sanding units to choose from, you can specify a configuration of up to three heads to suit your precise needs. The Sandteq W-300 offers a 1350mm working width and boasts a heavy, stable machine frame designed to provide exceptional smoothness and torsional resistance. The sander is controlled using Homag’s powerTouch operating panel which features a 21in HD multi-touch display screen.

The right heads for your tasks Depending on the focus of the application and the volumes to be processed, machines can

be specified with one to three heads. If you need to machine large quantities of solid wood and calibrate to full width with high removal rates then the R-Head with a profiled steel roller is ideal. The cross belt Q-Head ensures smooth, very high-quality surfaces with the cut direction rotated by 90°. It is ideal for high-gloss paint finishes up to grain P2500. And finally, the X-Head is a multifunctional single-head all-rounder

ideal for calibration sanding (P80120), fine sanding (P120-320) and paint sanding (P320-1200). If versatility is more important than high volumes, and you need calibration and fine sanding, then the universal two-in-one L-Head is right solution. For the added security of the segmented pressure beam at lower volumes, the C-Head will calibrate and fine sand. To obtain a premier quality finish for veneer, paint and filler sanding

the H-Head will provide the utmost in surface quality. For intermediate sanding of veneers, varnish and fine wood sanding, the E-Head prepares surfaces for an H-Head. For high accuracy finish sanding, the eps® system developed by Homag has individual segments (25mm wide) which automatically adjust themselves to uneven sections in the workpiece within a tolerance range of 2mm (max) to ensure that each part of the workpiece always receives the correct sanding pressure. For increased accuracy, the mps® segmented pad system uses a super sensitive 12.5mm grid for workpiece detection; this very fine detection, coupled with Homag’s rapid and frictionless magnetic pressure beam system delivers a guaranteed quality finish. Manufacturing results Peter Holt again: “Since we’ve had the Sandteq W-300 we’ve seen not only a very significant improvement in finish quality, but also a faster throughput of work in the factory. “What’s more, the machine looks the part and that’s very important for creating the right impression

when potential customers visit our manufacturing facility. As they say, you never get a second chance to create a first impression – the Homag machine takes care of that beautifully.” Homag – professionals through and through “Throughout our dealings with Homag, they’ve continued to impress us with their open, honest and transparent approach. They are true professionals whose knowledge and experience is a fantastic benefit when it comes to specifying the right machine for a task. “It is not, therefore, surprising that we have put our faith in Homag again and are now investing in a second wide-belt sander from them. Being German engineered and manufactured we know it is going to be technically advanced, reliable and above all else it will deliver a premium quality finish,” concludes Peter Holt. Wide range of adhesives for every application TAKA and WPR are two leading companies in the wood and furniture sector offering what it says is a unique, complete and advanced service in the field of profile wrapping and panel lamination. The strategic and innovative synergy between an adhesive manufacturer (TAKA) and a machine producer (WPR) started in 2003 and today has reached a high level of specialisation allowing a quick, professional and exhaustive set-up of the production lines from the simplest units to the most complex systems. This close collaboration and the positive interchange of information among WPR, TAKA and their clients have also allowed a continuous fruitful process of improvements and innovation. An example of such evolution is illustrated by the following list of HMPUR adhesives, each of them developed for specific applications or needs. 2308.25PV Specifically developed for the profile wrapping with particularly rigid foils like CPL, it presents a fast and strong initial adhesion even at high temperatures, considering that CPL must be heated above 90°C to be properly folded onto the profile. 2308.28P Adhesive for profiles and panels, especially when high glossy surfaces are required, WPR has developed a new laminating line called NWM for the production of glossy and matt panels up to 2200mm wide.

FP306_PagesMike.indd 65

2308.20 Hot melt polyurethane adhesive specific for panel lamination when glossy and high-quality surfaces are required. 2308.1T For the lamination of flat panels with PVC and PET foils without primer. This innovative adhesive also allows cutting operations at low temperatures like those reached immediately after the production. 2308.40 Formulated for the lamination of panels using the roll coater applicator, it allows the application of low weights, starting from 35g/m2 and being also free from the undesired formation of adhesive cords. 2308.75 For the lamination of panels, including honeycomb boards, using the roll coater applicator when a high initial adhesion is necessary. 3308.20 Hot melt polyurethane adhesive for edgebanding. It shows an excellent open time with a strong initial adhesion at ambient temperatures even during the hot season (25-30°C). Moreover, this product guarantees a high storage stability which is useful especially after prolonged stops (eg weekends) of the production lines. Vitap upgrades Blitz CNC drilling machine

Y

Available in the UK from Ney, the Vitap Blitz has undergone a transformation. The original Blitz would drill and insert glue and dowels but only in the edge of the panel. Customers loved the machine and its price but wanted to be able to face drill for a cam fitting. Vitap listened and has now developed and released the latest version of the machine. With a working width of 1300mm which splits into two, allowing both left- and right-handed components to be drilled simultaneously, three horizontal drills and a glue and dowel insertion head, the Blitz 2.0 is capable of achieving high volumes of production for a very reasonable cost. It has a 19in TFT monitor, and Albatross TPA software. Programs can be either created on the machine, in the office and downloaded via a memory stick or the machine can be equipped with a barcode scanner to maximise production and eliminate operator error. Contact Ney for further information and visit the company’s Coventry showroom for a demonstration. 024 7630 8100 www.ney.co.uk

Improving your manufacturing bottom line with Hesse’s Fantastic-Color According to Hesse Lignal, its FantasticColor meets the highest lacquer demands and provides surfaces with up to 60% more coverage in one application, helping manufacturers to improve their bottom line efficiency. Improving bottom line efficiency is a key priority for many of its customers in the shopfitting, furniture and marine industries. However, with production costs rising and industry growth stalling amid current economic uncertainty, improving bottom line efficiency can be easier said than done. But if there’s one rule of thumb to follow, it’s to never become complacent in the manufacturing materials and processes. Excelling in manufacturing requires innovation and embracing new ideas. Looking at processes through these eyes can help elevate a business and increase profit. With this in mind, for those who have not already explored Fantastic-Color range, Hesse says it’s worth a closer look. It is a natural choice for those looking to improve their bottom line, helping to reduce manufacturing processing

FP306_PagesMike.indd 70

times and material costs. Hesse says its pigmented, light-fast and very well balanced two-component PU acrylic resin lacquer covers up to 60% more surface area in one application compared with the leading alternatives. It says it has an outstanding ability to stay on vertical surfaces, as well as excellent

levelling on horizontal surfaces. What’s more, the German company claims, the lacquer can be applied directly to MDF edges without using special primers and fillers. As a result, it says, the desired finish is achieved much faster; thus reducing processing times, without compromising on quality. For those not already aware of Hesse products, they enjoy an outstanding reputation among manufacturing professionals. Not only do all of Hesse Lignal’s products meet the IMO standard for coatings and Class B1 fire certification, but Fantastic-Color is also free from wood preservatives, toxic heavy metals, phthalate plasticisers and formaldehyde – ensuring both the wellbeing of the sprayers, as well as the end users. Fantastic-Color is suitable for all interior surfaces, making it an ideal choice for manufacturers working in different industries – from kitchens and bathrooms, to coatings for marine interiors. 023 9223 3310 sales@redwoodinnovations.co.uk www.redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Kite introduces new hand pallet wrap bundle offer Kite’s 5x5 pallet wrap system, one of the UK’s safest ways of reducing health and safety issues associated with hand wrapping pallets, is now available to buy in bundles from the Kite Packaging website.

The employee-owned business has introduced new hand stretch bundles which will help save its customers’ time and money thanks to their operational efficiencyboosting qualities. This hand wrapping system is particularly useful for businesses looking to boost their green credentials and reduce their use of plastic as it reduces the amount of pallet wrap used by up to 60%. The 5x5 pallet wrap dispenser, which was previously only available on a rental basis, can also now be purchased as a permanent addition, meaning businesses no longer have to enter into a contract. Ergonomically designed to improve comfort and efficiency, these hand-held pallet wrap systems allow operators to walk forward around pallets in order to dispense the film in a natural position with no bending or stretching required. This, combined with its pre-stretch gears that release film at the optimum elastic point, ensures a reduced risk of any

health and safety issues that can arise. The bundles are each made up of a 5x5 shrink wrap dispenser and nano technology pallet wrap,

with a wide variety of pallet wrap specifications to choose from so businesses can find the right pallet wrap for their business. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

MZ Project CNC bandsaws – a new way to cut shaped furniture parts

Walk in to the factory of almost every UK chair and sofa frame manufacturer and there will be anything from one to four manual, traditional bandsaws cutting solid wood shaped frame parts. Each machine will have its own skilled operator, and each different piece cut will require its own template for manual marking out. The cutting operation then commences, which for many parts requires the operator’s hands to be in very close proximity to the bandsaw blade. So the complete operation is labour intensive and requires maximum concentration from the operator to avoid errors or even accidents. Many furniture manufacturers have probably always thought that for this type of work the manual bandsaw is the only option. In fact this is no longer the case thanks to the MZ Project range of CNC bandsaws that have been specifically designed for cutting shaped furniture parts. The unique feature on all the MZ CNC bandsaws is that the blade will automatically angle +/- 90° through the program, thus replicating how the operator has to move the

FP306_PagesMike.indd 74

part on a manual machine. This means parts with complex shapes can be produced. Another big advantage is that the blanks to be cut are loaded and clamped on a moving carriage which runs on linear precision rails. The blank then stays clamped in position whilst the bandsaw and table move together to enable the shaped part to be cut. The cut piece is then ejected at the rear side of the bandsaw on to a fixed table or conveyor. The machine table then automatically returns to the operator ready for the next blank(s) to be loaded, with the possibility to load/stack pieces up to 100mm in height. In the resident IMAGO software part drawings in DXF format can be imported, and a program is then created for each different part required. A library of parts is built up and it is then just a case of the operator recalling which one he needs to run – no templates or manual marking out required. The only operation the operator may have to undertake is to manually adjust the workpiece clamps for different-sized blanks. Not only is there a big safety benefit as the operator’s hands are kept well away from

the cutting area – this type of machine helps deskill the job. Also the fact the machine is CNC controlled and works off computer-generated programs means the user always achieves repeat machining accuracy. The three models of machine available, the Basic, Universal and Hopper can be supplied with carriages either 1300mm or 2000mm in length – longer options on request as a special order. Each machine is configured slightly differently depending on the type of material being cut, its dimensions and if it has to be defect or knot-free for show wood. Not only can these bandsaws be used for cutting furniture parts, they are also popular for cutting different types of insulation material, gun headstocks, composites or parts for specialist packing frames. Special configuration machines are available on request. Exclusive UK agent JJ Smith believes this range of MZ Project machines can finally move bandsawing in to the 21st century. 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk
