Comment In these days of rolling news across all platforms, it’s impossible to ignore the social, political, environmental and ethical issues affecting all of our lives, both professionally and personally. Only this week, Iceland mourned the loss of its first-ever glacier to climate change, and today news broke of more massive rainforest fires in the Amazon – aka the lungs of the world which provides around 20% of the earth’s oxygen and is a key carbon store that slows the pace of global warming. According to the National Geographic, there are over 74,000 fires burning in the Amazon across the north-west of Brazil, an 80% increase on 2018 – NASA can even see these fires from space. Observers say that deforestation is to blame, fuelled by a business agenda from Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro. I like to believe that the overwhelming majority of all furniture and woodworking businesses in this country source their materials from reputable sources, with some stipulating a complete FSC and PEFC supply chain – but what else can businesses do? Well, for those that do not have an environmental policy, they can think about it now and put a plan in place and begin to execute it. For those who already have a strategy, can this process be sped up or fast-tracked? And for businesses which are confident their environmental credentials are intact, can they tackle the ultimate challenge to become completely carbon neutral? And before dismissing this as unnecessary or undeliverable, there are companies out there we have all have heard of, such as Starbank Panel Products (featured in this issue) which have fully engaged with this forward-thinking philosophy and making it a core issue. I firmly believe that in the near future, factors such as raw material consumption, cradle-to-cradle resource management, ethical business trading and a long-term sustainable model will begin to be the business norm. To the point, I believe, that there will be carbon credits, or something similar, which reward environmentallysustainable business models – indeed, the United Nations environment programme has labelled the green economy as “one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.”

Apprenticeship standard at risk without urgent support The Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) is urgently appealing to UK furniture manufacturers to financially support vital work needed to renew the level 2 Furniture Manufacturer Apprenticeship Standard. The current level 2 standard is the mainstay of apprenticeship training for the UK furnishing industry with around 1000 apprentices having been trained through the 10 pathways since its launch in 2016. The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IFATE), the controlling authority on apprenticeship standards, has said that the current Furniture Manufacturer standard must be reviewed before the end of 2019 as it does not meet its new guidelines. This means that the existing single standard with pathways must be replaced by separate standards for each specialist occupation if government funded skills training is to be maintained.
Based on demand for the existing apprenticeship standard, FIESTA is proposing to rationalise the current standard, phasing out five pathways and creating four new level 2 furniture standards that will meet the new criteria laid down by IFATE: 1. Fitted Furniture Installer 2. Furniture Manufacturer 3. Modern Upholsterer 4. Wood Machinist (incorporating Furniture CNC Specialist) The approximate cost of creating the original standard was around £90,000, but the cost of deriving the four new standards is £5000 each. FIESTA is calling for manufacturers to contribute towards the cost to develop the standards. The organisation is asking for a minimum of £250 from a manufacturer but would like larger businesses to consider inputting greater amounts. Gary Baker, chairman of FIESTA, says: “This represents a significant allocation of resource and
FIESTA is asking for industry support to make sure that these new standards can be developed before the deadline at the end of 2019. “The occupations of fitted furniture installers, cabinet makers, modern upholsterers and wood machinists will be impacted most without a replacement, because employers will no longer have access to funded apprenticeship training, which would inevitably increase the skills gap in the furniture sector.” If manufacturers are able to support this initiative and want to get involved in the working groups, they should contact Jeremy Stein by calling 01494 896790 or by emailing Jeremy@ thebcfa.com. www.fiestalearning.com

New loose-fit stretch trousers for maximum mobility
Combilift is a finalist in the Design4Safety Award Combilift’s talent for designing innovative products that enhance safety has once again been recognised, this time by BITA (British Industrial Truck Association). It has named Combilift as one of the finalists in the Industrial Vehicles Category of this year’s Design4Safety Awards, which take place during the IMHX show in the last week of September. The product which impressed the judging panel is Combilift’s unique, patented multi-position tiller arm which is a feature common to all its pedestrian models. It was designed to ensure maximum safety for the operator and other personnel who may be in the vicinity where the trucks are operating such as busy production plants, whilst enabling productive picking and placing of products in narrow aisles. It can be turned to the left or right of the truck and enables push button rotation of the rear wheel parallel to the chassis and back again. It allows the operator to remain in the safest possible position when working in narrow aisles – at the side of the truck rather than at the rear. This reduces the risk of the operator being crushed or trapped between the truck and racking. The sight line is not impeded by having to look through the mast, guaranteeing full visibility of the load, the forks and the surroundings, for greater awareness and therefore safety. The tiller arm also incorporates a monitor which clearly displays the rear wheel position at all times. Models incorporating the multi-position tiller arm will of course be on display at IMHX on one of Combilift’s four stands, based around stand number L125 in hall 18. www.combilift.com

Kite Packaging South Coast donate to Children with Cancer UK The team at Kite Packaging’s South Coast Regional Distribution Centre in Portsmouth has made a £1000 donation to the Children with Cancer UK charity. Children with Cancer UK funds groundbreaking research to help children with cancer as well as raise awareness to inspire others to help. They have a mission of improving the survival rate of young cancer patients as well as improving their quality of life and preventing cancer in the future. Neil Hopkins, managing partner of Kite’s south coast base, says: “The team at Kite Portsmouth have chosen a fantastic charity that does amazing things in its fight to help young children with cancer, we are all very proud to be

able to support this wonderful cause.” The charity was set up when Eddie and Marion O’Gorman lost two children, Paul and Jean, to cancer. In February 1987, leukaemia claimed the life of their 14-year-old son Paul and within
weeks of his death, Eddie and Marion started fundraising. Just nine months later, the next devastating blow struck the family when Paul’s sister, Jean, also died from the disease. In November 1987, just days after Jean’s death, Eddie and Marion O’Gorman, met Diana, Princess of Wales. Deeply moved by the double tragedy, she personally helped to establish this charity. A spokesperson for Children with Cancer says: “We are very grateful to Kite south coast for choosing our charity and for making this very generous donation.” To make a donation to Children with Cancer UK or for more information on the charity, visit childrenwithcancer.org.uk

Around 85% of the public don’t know the correct name for a balustrade! People who wish to replace the balustrade on their staircase may find it difficult to source the correct part. This is because many of the public are incorrectly referring to it as a bannister, research shows. A survey carried out by stair part specialist Jackson Woodturners, highlighted that only 15% of the public is aware of the correct term. When shown a diagram of a balustrade – a structure made up of a combination of stair parts, including a handrail, base rail, spindles and newel post – 68% of respondents wrongly thought it was called a bannister. A further 8% described it as a railing and 7% referred to it as a handrail. This suggests online shoppers may struggle to find the parts they are looking to buy, and suppliers unable to attract customers. Lucie Jackson, director at Jackson Woodturners, comments: “In theory, sourcing stair parts online should be very straightforward, however, it’s a whole different matter if customers are searching for the wrong terms. As a result, we have included detailed diagrams on our site, explaining the combination of stair parts needed to construct a balustrade.” Respondents aged 45 and above expressed far greater knowledge of the terminology than younger respondents. This may show that the correct term is being used less than it used to be. This also explains why 85% of 18-24-year-olds are unaware of the correct name. According to the Construction Industrial Training Board (CITB), just over two-fifths of construction workers aged over 45 are set to retire in the next 20 years. This highlights the importance of teaching industry terminology to apprentices, but also making these terms clear to customers.
FP311_Pages.indd 14
Survey Data This survey data was gathered via Google Surveys in July 2019 amongst 1018 members of the UK public.
‘What do you call this part of the staircase?’
Bannister – 68.1% Balustrade – 15.3% Railing – 8.4%
Handrail – 7.2% Support – 0.8%
Interim chief executive of CITB, William Burton, warns: “Almost one in five workers is set to retire from the construction industry over the next 5-10 years, so not taking action now to encourage young people to join the industry – and investing in the training to up-skill our existing workforce – is no longer an option.” www.jacksonwoodturners.co.uk

Kite Packaging ranked as a top business
A recent report features the top ‘Owner Managed Companies’ across the Midlands – and Kite Packaging is proud to have been recognised for its achievements. Established in 2001 as a true employee-owned company and with the original management team still at the forefront of the business, Kite has seen impressive growth throughout its history.
Recognition of Kite comes after a very successful year for the packaging distribution company, who in 2018 invested in further geographical expansion by extending their network of regional distribution centres to include the North East of England. 2018 also saw the launch of Kite’s Mobile Testing Facility, the first of its kind in the industry, allowing Kite to bring solutions and
expertise directly to customers own sites. At the start of 2019 Kite launched a company-wide initiative to reduce their own, and their customers, use of plastics by 120 tonnes following using the mantra of reduce, re-use, recycle and replace – a goal the company achieved within the first six months of 2019. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

AMS’ new heavy duty straight-line edger and multi-rip range Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) is one of the few companies in the UK that is offering a straight line edger and multi-rip saw range for the industry. The company is both excited and enthusiastic with its new additions to the Wadkin Bursgreen range. “For many years, there had been a gap in the market for a heavy-duty straight-line edger,” says AMS director Steve Foster. He adds that his previous employer, Wadkin, had put hundreds of the PU range into the UK market, but they are now becoming very old and expensive to keep. When the opportunity came along some 12 months ago to become the UK’s and Ireland’s sole distributor of this new range AMS grasped it with both hands. AMS director Steve McGloin says: “We were aware of machines out there but we’re looking for a top-quality heavy-duty range of saws and multi-rips. AMS placed orders straight away. The whole range is available to view in its Leicestershire showroom, where visitors will be able to see, touch and try – and ask all the questions that you want.” AMS has also developed – along with the manufacturer – special training courses to enable its customers to use the new machines confidently and to speed-up the setting process. The company’s engineers are fully trained on the new range and can confidently store and commission your equipment. At Eurofit, we’re proud to have over 25 years’ experience in supplying hinging and sliding solutions to the UK market. Amongst our extensive portfolio of products are Tutti – who specialise in sliding door systems and functioning hardware accessories, which includes soft close hinges.
The demand for soft-close hinges within the UK market has risen substantially within the last year. As a leading supplier we are able to respond to UK demand and have provided soft-closed hinges to both industry professionals and UK consumers. We have recognised that Tutti soft-close hinges are popular amongst our customers for creating a professional finish to kitchen cupboards and similar applications prone to slamming. The damper mechanism reduces the impact when the door meets the frame,
protecting your cupboard doors and allowing a smoother, quieter movement. Integrated soft close hinges are offered in 105° and 165° opening (as shown above). Along with 30° and 45° angled, Blind Corner and Frame hinges, as well as hinges for glass doors and doors up to 30mm thick. This allows furniture manufacturers to standardise on the one range. Meanwhile, integrated soft close hinges reduce labour time by not having to retro fit soft close devices, and also eliminates the risk of such devices
being accidently knocked off. A combination of soft close and non-soft close hinges can be fitted to a door using the same mounting plate to save cost. As well as holding large stocks in East Yorkshire, we are able to manage the supply chain directly from the manufacturer. Trade customer or wish to learn more? Our sales and technical team are available for any further product advice you may need.

Growing with Weinig Cheshire Mouldings & Woodturnings’ relationship with Weinig began over 30 years ago. Furniture & Joinery Production met ts MD, John Carney, who asserts that it’s these long-term partnerships which have provided strong foundations for the company to be in the position it is today. John Carney, Cheshire Mouldings & Woodturnings MD, isn’t a man to mince words. He’s to the point, sharp, intuitive and has an overwhelming appetite for success. Yet, as the interview progresses, whilst it’s clear he is the driving force behind Cheshire Mouldings & Woodturnings, and he relishes the challenges that come with his position of managing director, you get the feeling he really doesn’t enjoy the limelight much. He deflects questions, shifting attention to those who helped him along the route to success and stressing the partnerships he’s fostered. While most bosses in John’s position might gloat over the company’s achievements,
Founder, John Carney with Jacquie Capper, national sales manager
he remains remarkably modest – despite conquering the giants of the DIY and independent merchants market, pushing turnover to just shy of £40m, and achieving recognition as one of the London Stock Exchange’s Top 1000 Companies To Inspire no fewer than four times. That’s no mean feat for a company that was established in 1988 and didn’t even have a workshop to call its own when it started out. Much of that success John attributes to the strong partnership he’s developed with the Weinig Group and the advice, expertise and technology he has accessed through them over the years. “Weinig supplied me with my very first
moulder over 30 years ago when I was working out of some old converted sea containers in Warrington,” recalls John proudly. Running alongside his father’s merchant business, John’s head for business was clear from a young age as he saw a gap in the market and began manufacturing stair spindles, newel posts, dado rails and architectural mouldings for the merchant trade. “I wanted my business to be a success and I knew if I was to be taken seriously, I needed to invest in good quality equipment. Weinig’s seven-headed Unimat 22 was the perfect fit for my business and our relationship has stood the test of time.” It was winning a Howden’s Joinery contract to supply stair parts in 1997 that sparked a shift in the company. “Back then, Howdens only had 27 branches – they now have over 700 – but this was big business for us,” admits John, who still remains one of the original suppliers to the nationwide joinery supplier. Within 10 years, the business had reached a turnover of £980,000 and the decision to move to bigger premises in St Helens meant a substantial additional investment in new machinery. “From the moment I started using Weinig’s machines, I knew it was a brand worth investing in. Their ongoing technical support and service packages are simple and effective and their customer service is second to none. In fact, our original Weinig salesman, David Hill, who has now retired, is still on hand to help us if we need him. “You wouldn’t get that kind of service anywhere else. As a result, we don’t look anywhere else and our manufacturing site is filled with Weinig kit, including five moulders, BK band saws, a CNC router and a new finger jointing line.”
“ We know what we want to achieve but that doesn’t mean we always know how to achieve it. Weinig are the experts – we’ve seen that first hand. They have the knowledge and understanding to make our vision a reality”

Weinig Powermat moulders are the key to quality and productivity at Cheshire Mouldings
As the business continued to grow year on year and multimillion pound contracts were confirmed with well-known DIY chains in 2012 and 2015, Weinig was challenged to put the necessary infrastructure in place to fulfil large-scale contracts that would inevitably see Cheshire Mouldings increase its turnover from £17m to £26m in one year alone – an impressive figure for a business owner whose ultimate goal was to reach a turnover of £3m before retirement age. The new machines not only needed to offer a continuously high level of accuracy and precision, they also needed to assist in deskilling the production lines, reduce down-time and increase production. “In the months after winning one big contract, we invested in two new machines – a finger jointing line and a cross cut line – that we installed in a new, dedicated factory. There was never any doubt that we would use Weinig,” says John. “By this point, they knew our business well and, more importantly, when dealing with a multimillion pound contract, we knew we could trust them to create a solution that worked. We saw immediate results. The original finger jointing line required four men and produced 2000m a day. The new line requires three men and produces 20,000 metres a day. These kind of figures excite me and wouldn’t have been achievable without Weinig’s help. “We have always looked to the future and Weinig are like-minded in that respect,” says John, who openly admits to favouring innovative companies that are fluid in their response to change. “We know what we want to achieve but that doesn’t mean we always know how to

achieve it. Weinig are the experts – we’ve seen that first hand. They have the knowledge and understanding to make our vision a reality.” This approach has often seen Cheshire Mouldings taking the lead and becoming the first company to put Weinig’s latest technology to the test. It was among the first companies in the UK to install Weinig’s clever Power Lock system and the first company to buy a R1000 CNC grinder. “I still believe the R1000 was the best thing we’ve ever bought,” says John. “We make quads and dowels that go from 6-20mm but thanks to this Weinig grinder, we only need one person working in our tool room, even though they are grinding for five moulders. The accuracy is absolutely superb and the blending is perfect. “Yes, it comes with a price tag but modernising our production in this way has helped us to put £20m onto our turnover in the last five years and reduced our labour costs.” Automation is a key area of development for the Cheshire-based business and John’s constant hunger to push the boundaries of manufacturing and increase turnover is one of the reasons the company has won a string of industry awards. “We might be close to reaching a £40m turnover but how do we get it to £50m? How do we take our business to the next level?” John put these question to Weinig UK’s MD, Malcolm Cuthbertson, who presented a complete overhaul of the current manufacturing processes. Weinig’s ‘Blue Sky Thinking’ concept involves looking at its customer’s complete manufacturing cycle – from raw materials to packaging – and suggesting an improved factory layout that offers a clear and concise endto-end solution that allows for the more effective use of existing machinery and puts the disciplines in place to expand the facilities at a later date.
The R1000 CNC grinder is the ‘beating heart’ of Cheshire’s mouldings production

“Because we’ve grown rapidly, our production areas are slightly disjointed, with our stock, cross-cutting, finger jointing, prep, moulding and packaging areas bolted onto each other,” admits John. “Weinig has looked at our current practices and created a plan that will help us to reach our end goal of becoming a fully-automated factory in the future. “We currently run 35-45,000m of inbound board a day and our machines run for no more than 6.5 hours a day. Now imagine the time and cost saving possibilities if we introduced rollers to move the wood from A to B instead of using forklift trucks, the integration of production planning software and installing intuitive machinery that can manage stock control, handling and optimise machining automatically. “Our eyes have been opened to these possibilities and it’s an exciting time for us. “The industry is constantly evolving and I honestly believe you need to invest in the future if you want to stay ahead. Take the woodturning part of our business as an example: in the last 10 years, we’ve gone from producing 23,000 stair spindles a day to just 6000. We’re also seeing a trend for primed and wrapped products emerging, so we are having to change elements of our production to respond to this.
FP311_Pages.indd 31
Cheshire Mouldings’ complete line has been designed to offer a continuously high level of accuracy and precision whilst also de-skilling the manufacturing processes, reducing down-time and increasing production
“But if we’re looking at the here and now, it’s our small section mouldings where we see major growth. We predict a growth of £4m in the next four years and because of this, we will continue to work with Weinig in this area of manufacturing and start to implement their plans into our factory over the next 12 months.” John concludes: “Having strong relationships with suppliers who have the same forward-thinking attitude and flexibility in their approach to business is a must for us. That’s what makes Weinig a great fit for Cheshire Mouldings. They’ve been by our side for over 30 years and with the introduction of new technology, design services and their commitment to maintaining high levels of customer service, Weinig will continue to be an important ally going forward.” www.weinig.co.uk www.cheshiremouldings.co.uk

DAMS Furniture celebrates more than 30 years partnering with Homag UK DAMS Furniture began life in Liverpool in 1967 as the Dictating & Adding Machine Services company repairing business machines. The company then started selling filing cabinets which led to an opportunity to supply office desks to Liverpool Council. Unable to find any suitable products, DAMS made the decision to manufacture the desks themselves! “From this acorn,” explains DAMS Furniture’s managing director, Chris Scott, “has grown a £44m turnover business employing just shy of 300 people and occupying a quarter of a million square feet of manufacturing and storage space. As the company continued to grow and became more successful, we began investing in top end woodworking machinery to enable us to produce high quality ranges of office furniture. “Our relationship with Homag began over 30 years ago and has developed into a strong and
Homag Sawteq B-400 – a high performance saw for processing large volumes of panels
FP311_Pages.indd 32
extremely successful partnership. As the leading global woodworking machinery brand, Homag sets the benchmark for the rest of the industry. Its heritage shines through its products; German engineering skills are world renowned and you can clearly see how this manifests itself with Homag equipment – it really is in a class of its own.” The need for a new edge bander and beam saw “Over the years we have made a considerable investment in Homag equipment which has all, without exception, performed reliably and delivered excellent quality results. Consequently, when it came to changing our 15-year-old edge banders, Homag was top of our list for a suitable replacement. “Despite our faith in the Homag brand, however, it wouldn’t have been prudent if we didn’t carry out due diligence to ensure we get the right solution for the business. After all, advanced equipment like this is
a significant investment. “The choice for high performance double-sided edge banders is fairly narrow and after researching the market we opted to order an Edgeteq D-610 double sided edge bander from Homag with a feeding table and rotary system. This new edge bander underpins quality and capacity for DAMS. “We elected to have a semiautomatic feeding table that queues up the panels and a rotary system that rotates the panels to the correct orientation as required. This helps the operators keep up with the speed of the machine and delivers maximum throughput capacity.” Making sure the new saw cuts the mustard “The decision on which beam saw to get was less straightforward. We evaluated a number of brands and carried out site visits around the UK to see various solutions in action. The requirement for a new saw came about because of a shift in customer demand towards a wider choice of products and smaller batch size production. This meant the need to cut high volumes of different-sized panels quickly and accurately using a variety of different board types. “Long-term, we not only wanted the right beam saw, but one that would also integrate with an automated storage system that
could manage a large stock of boards and deliver them to the saw automatically as and when required. This need narrowed down our search and after visiting Homag in Germany and carrying out site visits there too, we were convinced that the Sawteq B-400 with an integrated lifting table was the ideal solution for DAMS. “Not only is this model a high quality and extremely efficient beam saw, it will also integrate seamlessly with the new automated Homag board storage system that we will be installing soon.” Edgeteq D-610 double-sided edge bander from Homag The Edgeteq D-610 profiLine edge bander formats, profiles and edges furniture workpieces on two sides in a single run. It is ideal for producing medium to large series at a high performance level with few changeovers. The precise edge processing produces first class results which are enhanced by the enclosed frame design that delivers vibrationfree operation with optimum trimming patterns. In terms of edging technology the Edgeteq D-610 is extremely flexible, offering the use of hot melt glue, PU or zero-joint technology. It also features optimised chip and offcut disposal which helps minimise machine downtime and reduces servicing requirements.

33 Sawteq B-400 with integrated lifting table The Sawteq B-400 is a highperformance saw for processing larger volumes of panels in finish cut quality. The saw works reliably and precisely at high speed and delivers high throughput. It features a high saw blade projection which provides flexibility for cutting books or individual panels. With this model a high degree of customisation means the saw can be configured exactly to requirements. DAMS Furniture specified the model with an integrated lifting table which automatically feeds boards thus speeding up the production processes by a considerable margin. This is particularly beneficial for frequently cut panels made from the same material or those cut in books. Even in standard trim, the Sawteq B-400 offers the full range of technical features and can be used either as a standalone machine, interlinked with other machines or as part of a production line. Equipped with the latest CADmatic 5 control software, the Sawteq B-400 is extremely energy

Support and training that deliver results Chris Scott again: “Throughout the specifying and purchasing processes we were supported extremely well by both Jon Lawman (Homag’s area manager) and the entire Homag team in the UK and Germany. “Homag’s after-sales service is first class with excellent technical support which has developed
considerably in recent years. Their external diagnostics, spare parts service and engineer support for maintenance are excellent, mirroring the superb German engineering of the machinery. “Training on the machinery was very thorough. For the edge bander it was all done on site. For the saw, however, we sent three of our team to Germany for several days’ training two weeks prior to the installation of the equipment. In addition, the Homag UK engineers trained our operators onsite to ensure that we maximise the machine’s potential going forward.
“In terms of the impact the new edge bander and saw have had on the business, we’ve seen a significant uplift in output, a reduction in direct labour costs, lower wastage and a general overall efficiency improvement. We’ve also seen a quality enhancement, as we’re achieving a much better edge quality using the new Homag machine,” concludes Chris. 21st Century upgrade for historic manufacturer Dust Control Systems (DCS), now part of Absolent Group, have completed a major upgrade of the dust extraction system at the premises of one of the UK’s premier kitchen furniture manufacturers – a company steeped in manufacturing heritage. Coventry-based manufacturer, Burbidge & Son Ltd, has been involved with the production of wooden kitchen furniture since the early 1970s, but the company’s history in woodworking manufacture dates back over 150 years, and five generations of the Burbidge family. It all began with Henry Burbidge, back in 1867, primarily manufacturing turned wooden products for a variety of diverse industries; bobbins for local textile companies, bannisters and newel posts for the building trade, and

sports goods such as cricket stumps and croquet mallets for a customer list that included Slazenger. Over the decades to follow, the company developed strong connections with the region’s motor vehicle industry; manufacturing components for the likes of Morris and MG, as well as a brief period of manufacturing plywood components for the Black & Decker Workmate. Other strings to the company’s manufacturing bow have included goods for the musical instrument market, with items such as recorders
and drum sticks, and even more offbeat with the production of stiletto heels, wooden handles for electric kettles, and even solid wood toilet seats for Harrods. By the 1990s however, Burbidge had grown to be one of the UK’s leading kitchen furniture manufacturers and now, almost 30 years later, the company is still drawing on its rich woodworking heritage, still family-owned, and headed by Ben Burbidge; Henry’s great, great grandson. With previous first-hand knowledge and experience of the capabilities DCS had in the design and installation of dust extraction systems for the woodworking industry, and especially in the kitchen furniture manufacturing sector, Burbidge’s operations director, Mike Procter, had no hesitation in contacting them to evaluate the company’s requirements and to explore possible options for bringing the system up to date. “We had decided the time was right to review the whole extraction system with a view to improving its overall efficiency, as well as ensuring optimum safety standards were being achieved, and I was also keen to explore the possibility of including Ecogate technology at Burbidge to, hopefully, make some cost savings,” says Mike. “Over the years, the company’s expanding
23/08/2019 15:19
35 collection of woodworking machinery has inevitably led to the situation where we had multiple fans and filter units, serving all areas of the factory, and all working at full power, all day, every day.” A site visit by sales director, Andy Hives, to review and appraise the existing extraction system confirmed that, although the system’s capacity was fully meeting all statutory health and safety criteria, there was considerable scope to improve efficiency and the potential to realise significant cost savings as well. Fume extraction from the company’s Cefla paint line was still required on an almost continuous basis but, in common with most furniture manufacturers, the Ecogate energy survey carried out at Burbidge revealed that only a small number of the dust-producing woodworking machines in the factory were ever in operation at the same time, and so dust extraction was only required on a partial basis. “Excluding the paint line,” Andy explains, “the survey showed that the maximum extraction volume required, at any given point in time, was only two thirds of the volume currently being extracted to the three externally-sited filter units. Effectively, one of the three filter units was surplus to requirement, and could be removed altogether.” DCS decommissioned the redundant filter unit and reconfigured the extraction system; instantly reducing power consumption by 120,000kW hours per year by the removal of two 37kW fans. Although some existing ductwork was retained, new FastClip ductwork was installed throughout the factory, and automatic Ecogate motorised dampers were installed to serve each machine. In addition, extraction was provided at a further six ‘push-to-run’ machine clean-up points. Ecogate greenBOX units constantly monitor and control the motorised dampers; opening the dampers to enable extraction whenever
A new 5.5kW bag filter unit, installed to serve the accessory manufacturing area, provides extraction for a variety of small machine tools which have been fitted with extraction hoods manufactured by Gallito
machines come online, and closing them again as a machine shuts down. The greenBOX units also control the Ecogate PowerMASTER Variable Speed Drive units (VSDs), which in turn control the extraction fan speeds. An Ecogate system exploits the laws of physics, and a relatively small reduction in fan speed can generate disproportionately larger reductions in power consumption. At Burbidge, the new extraction system is capable of removing just over 85,000m3 of dust-laden air every hour, which is over 30,000m3 per hour less than the previous system, and it’s this reduction in volume that translates into reduced energy use and cost savings. The predicted savings to be made by installing Ecogate technology on the reconfigured system add up to a further 122,000kW hours per year; giving a total saving of over 242,000kW hours in the first year following installation, which represents a 55% reduction in total annual power consumption.
Installing the Ecogate technology has delivered more benefits than simply reducing the company’s electricity bills, confirms Burbidge’s production manager, Tim Foreman: “The Ecogate system and extraction installation work has made a significant difference to the factory environment; there’s much less air being removed from the building now, and we also have warm, filtered air returned to the factory, so it’s much easier to keep the place warm and, with fewer fans in operation it’s also much quieter.” In conclusion, Mike Procter added: “Our spend on electricity has reduced, and the new ductwork has smartened up the appearance of the factory, but I was also very impressed with how DCS managed the project; they stuck to the agreed plan, which was detailed on a chart showing the work schedule for each day, and ensured the least possible disruption to our production.” 0800 040 7116 www.DCSlimited.co.uk

Software changes business model Lean Manufacturing for BSG with Cabinet Vision and Alphacam An award-winning Irish furniture manufacturer producing quality, bespoke joinery, kitchens and furniture for high end office fitouts, says introducing Cabinet Vision and Alphacam into its company, completely changed its business model. BSG Design was founded by brothers Barry and Stephen Goulding, at Trim, County Meath, in 2013. Three years later they reached the final of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur, and in 2017 won the Meath Best Small to Medium Enterprise and Overall Best Business. Barry attributes their success to attention to detail in their design and planning, and short project timescales. “Using Alphacam and Cabinet Vision has pretty much doubled the size of the business by improving efficiency in the production processes.” The majority of their work is bespoke high-end office and kitchen fitouts including reception counters, wall panelling and tea stations for prestigious customers such as PayPal, IBM, Ernst & Young, Irish Life, Northern Trust Bank, and Gourmet Food Parlour, with the remainder being domestic kitchens and cabinetry. Prior to investing in its four-axis SCM Pratix CNC nesting machine, the company operated with a panel saw, but now 70% of their work goes through Cabinet Vision, and 30% through Alphacam, with an overlap of around 20% of jobs being handled by both. Barry first used the software while studying at the GMIT Letterfrack College in Ireland for his Design and Manufacture qualification and Furniture Design degree. “After graduating, I worked in the industry for around 10 years, for furniture companies, and could see how much
FP311_Pages.indd 36
more efficient they’d be if they used Cabinet Vision and Alphacam.” So, when he started his own company, it was always the plan that CNC machinery and the CAD/CAM software would be introduced. He now carries out CAD drawings and 3D renders in Cabinet Vision, and uses its powerful Screen to Machine tool to communicate all the engineering data directly to the Pratix. A number of bespoke programs to manage aspects such as Keku clips and locks have been set up via the software’s User Created Standards (USCs). “These bespoke USCs write specific code for us to enable the software to do exactly what
we need for particular individual tasks.” And, as BSG manufacture cabinets to suit customer requirements, they use the software to set different construction methods. “For example, we may be working on an inframe unit, and the next job could be a slab door with a chamfer back handle detail and a checkout in the carcass for the handle rail. Or switching between rafix and dowel jointing, as details vary from project to project. So it’s invaluable to be able to vary the construction methods on how each item is made, quickly and simply.” Barry describes how BSG originally used 2D software for its panel saw, and that ‘huge’ time
23/08/2019 15:19
37
savings have now been achieved by drawing a 3D model in Cabinet Vision, as all the toolpaths for the CNC are generated automatically. “Screen to Machine sends accurate NC code for everything we’ve put on the model, out to the machine tool. For example, if we put drawers or any cabinet fittings on the model, all the mounting holes are machined in the various positions correctly, without us having to do anything else.” Barry says with Cabinet Vision taking care of standard shaped cabinets, it was a natural progression for the company to bring in Alphacam to tackle more complex components such as curved reception counters, and other items that could not be cut with Cabinet Vision. The two software brands from the Production Software stable of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence have played a major contribution in overcoming BSG’s biggest challenge, which was meeting the extremely short deadlines required from customers. “Basically, once the CAD drawings are done and approved, we’re almost there, because getting the CNC program, the saw cutlist, assembly sheets and labels with manufacturing information from the 3D model is very fast.” While they tender to main contractors, they are often recommended by architects and interior designers, who are impressed with their speed, efficiency and the high quality product finish. “Once we’ve tendered we get a set of drawings, usually as a PDF, and build our Alphacam and Cabinet Vision designs from those. Those original drawings from the client usually just show a general design idea and we need to incorporate accurate measurements and technical details for our own production, and for other trades such as plumbing and electrical,” says Barry. BSG’s designs regularly must take into
FP311_Pages.indd 37
account items which are not found in standard kitchens, such as large commercial fridges and commercial coffee machines. “And we frequently have to begin manufacture before walls are even built, to keep within the project timeline. Therefore, we often agree measurements with the contractor without going on site to get drawings approved, and then change the dimensions again just before production. But it’s so easy to modify the Cabinet Vision models by dragging and dropping them, and changing their dimensions, so that the final NC code produces perfectly accurate cabinets for the room.” In conclusion, Barry says the software has also enabled BSG to implement a degree of lean manufacturing within the company, which has helped change its business model. “We saw considerable benefits as soon as we started using Cabinet Vision,” says Barry. “As it creates each bespoke NC file from the CAD model in the office, there is a lot less downtime on the Pratix, as the manual input has been greatly reduced. “These efficiencies have made the process considerably faster. And the way parts are presented has improved with labelling from Cabinet Vision’s Label-IT, which means that nothing is forgotten once it has been inputted into the model. Anyone in the workshop can see a complete overview of the job. “The manufacturing booklet created in Cabinet Vision shows what’s required for each project,” says Barry, “and the labels ensure an accurate flow of information from the office to the workshop, and finally for the fitters on site to see everything that’s required for the installation, even down to the number of hinges and handles, and that all the fittings are there.” www.hexagon.com

The Homag SAWTEQ B-300 – high performance in a compact space offering first-class quality cuts every time
ROK European Kitchens selects Homag UK for new business venture ROK European Kitchens is a new venture that brings together a dynamic team with combined experience of over 100 years in the UK contract market. This positions ROK at the forefront of contemporary kitchen specification and design. The company works closely with architects, designers, developers and house builders to deliver high quality products and exceptional service. “From the start, our aim was to create a state-of-the-art production facility in Essex,” explains ROK’s managing director, John White. He continues: “Although it is a new company, the senior team has a vast amount of experience in the industry. Our aim was to create a manufacturing facility that would give us a mix of automation, for speed and efficiency, blended with the flexibility of traditional craftsmen’s skills. “The search for an equipment partner originally focused on a nesting machine. We looked at two suppliers, both of which we had had previous dealings. Initially, we felt that either of these two companies had the machinery that would do the job. “Being 100% honest, we always wanted Homag equipment, but we didn’t think we could afford it. But in actual fact, the deal Homag offered us was better than that of the other supplier. So, having seen the machinery in action at the W18 exhibition, we worked closely with Charles Smith, the Homag area manager, and the Homag UK team to specify the machinery that would best suit our needs.” The ideal manufacturing cell “The goal was to create the ideal manufacturing cell to meet our development plans. This included a beam saw, CNC machining centre, edge bander, a drilling and dowel inserter, and a

39 feature for ROK Kitchens which has used this method of edging since its inception. CNC-drilling and dowel-inserting machine – Drillteq D-500 With a heavy and sturdy machine bed made of Sorb Tech, the vibration-free Drillteq D-500 delivers accurate drill holes and precise positioning of dowels. It also features vertical drilling in the border area, ideal for connection fittings or hinge drill holes. Workpieces are held firmly via the use of up to eight clamping cylinders, variable to length and thickness. In addition, the adjustable centre stop allows for flexible handling of workpieces, thereby ensuring an optimum two-field operation. Case clamp Cabteq S-250 When it comes to building kitchens, manufacturing bathrooms or producing office furniture, cleanly pressed cabinets are a key sign of quality in pre-assembled furniture. The Cabteq S-250 is a robust assembly aid for pressing of carcass furniture. It has two speeds: ‘approach’ (rapid) and ‘pressing’ (slower). At the touch of a button, the plates move from their starting position to the pressing position at rapid speed just before hitting the cabinet. The speed then automatically switches to a lower pressing speed. This dual speed function allows for more cabinets to be pressed per shift. Each cabinet is pressed centrally and over the entire surface giving a solid, square finish. Attractive finance deal removes financial constraints John White again: “Being a new company, cash flow is extremely important and when Homag offered us an attractive finance package through Homag Finance we jumped at the chance. The five year deal will enable us to focus on building the business without having to worry about the financial commitment. We estimate the equipment will have paid for itself well within that time frame. “The installation was spread over a four week period and went extremely smoothly. Prior to the machines arriving we sent some of our

operators to Homag UK for training. Homag then gave our team onsite training to ensure we would get the most out of the machines: it was a very comprehensive package. “The set-up we have is really efficient and we are confident that it will prove to be an extremely productive manufacturing cell in the months and years to come.” German engineering excellence “Homag’s heritage gives us tremendous peace of mind. The Germans are renowned for producing well-thought out, technically-advanced and totally reliable machinery. These factors are
extremely valuable to us as a business. With this reassurance we can forge ahead safe in the knowledge that our manufacturing capability is not only cutting-edge, but also100% dependable. “From the operators’ point of view, these new machines are very intuitive and so it hasn’t taken them much time to master the day-to-day running of the equipment. Obviously, as we get more experience under our belts, we will extract even more out of the machines,” concludes John. To touch, its feel is just as authentic: the high-gloss surface is just as smooth as it looks - it is endlessly smooth, even when lightly rubbed. And the super-matt textured product feels emphatically flat, with visual and tactile appeal in equal measure. PET laminates combine their design qualities with excellent formability and durability. They are scratch-resistant, fingerprint resistant and easy to clean. These material properties make it possible to create furniture fronts and caravan interiors which can withstand bumps, whilst retaining their beautiful finish for a long time. Patent-pending procedure for protecting pores during open-pore coating by roller application in the parquet and furniture industries. Hesse GmbH & Co. KG from Hamm has filed a patent for a new roller application to coat porous woods with UV lacquers. The difficulty when coating porous woods by roller application is that the pores either take on an unnatural appearance or are not adequately wetted. The desired aesthetic of the pore pattern is lost in the first case. The second case can result in soiling of the pores during use, for instance as parquet. This soiling cannot be remedied using normal cleaning methods. Such issues can lead to costly complaints in the most unfavorable circumstances. The parquet industry in particular has been seeking solutions to this problem for many years.
A patent application has been filed for this developed solution. The procedure does not in principle require any new coating materials or system engineering. Albeit there are proposals for the best equipment in terms of machinery and lacquers to obtain perfect results.
Solid oak wood greatly enlarged under light microscope.

Hesse has now developed a fitting solution. This enables the pores to be coated using a special roller application which retains and protects the natural pore pattern.
Hesse-Lignal markets the procedure under the name POREGUARD. Interested companies from the parquet and furniture industries can conclude a license agreement with Hesse to enable them to use this new technology for their own purposes. Hesse GmbH & Co. Unfinished business – the plywood furniture trend Leeds-based boards and panels firm, Lawcris, embraces the current trend for plywood furniture with its impressive stock offering and rapid delivery service. Plywood, as a material, exemplifies the great manufacturing advancements of the 20th century. Thin sheets of veneer – glued in layers with grains running in opposite directions – create a material that is both incredibly strong and incredibly lightweight, even when compared to solid wood. And the benefits of plywood don’t end there – an inherent flexibility makes plywood the ideal material for furniture manufacturing. Although wood veneers have existed since ancient Egyptian times, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that designers started to exploit the versatility of plywood. Since then, this humble board has been used for everything from aircrafts to prosthetic limbs. As the modernist movement swept across the globe in the early 20th century, furniture manufacturers also embraced plywood for its mass production capabilities. Using press moulds, designers could create beautiful furniture in curved forms like never before. Now, with CAD and CNC technology, the possibilities are almost endless. Continues on p60

60 DECORATIVE PANELS, SURFACING & COATINGS Once derided as an ugly construction material, plywood – like other raw boards such as OSB – has seen a huge surge in popularity in recent years, as the trend towards raw, natural materials has permeated the market. Like its fancier cousin, veneer, plywood embraces the beauty of the woodgrain with its organic grains and florets. Wood stains can elevate the appearance of plywood, enhancing the natural beauty of the grain, but whether you prefer stained or natural, raw plywood has become a mainstay of the furniture industry. This trend shift has led to a huge demand for different varieties of plywood within the industry, and Lawcris is determined to ensure its customers’ needs are met.
At Lawcris, one of the UK’s leading panel distributors, raw boards are the company’s bread and butter. Offering a wide variety of plywood, including long and short grain, bendi ply, birch, hardwood and more, in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, Lawcris has got plywood covered. The company keeps a huge stockholding in its vast Leeds-based facility, giving it the ability to provide stock products on a rapid next-day delivery. If the unfinished look isn’t for you, Lawcris even offers plywood bonding – along with a huge range of other core boards – on a speedy lead time. Visit the Lawcris website to view the full range of products. www.lawcris.co.uk

Engineered lifting solutions for industrial wood processes and ATEX areas
Palamatic is a leading supplier of vacuum tube lifting systems to the woodworking industry. With 35 years’ experience, thousands of the company’s solutions are in use on a daily basis. With recent changes in the construction industry, Palamatic’s range has developed to offer solutions to keep up with the demand. As a proven health and safety solution, a Palamatic Vacuum Tube Lifter offers increased operator safety and performance allowing efficient use of labour, and reduced injuries and claims. “Our systems are very robust, built to last and designed to endure the vast requirements of the woodworking industry,” explains Matt Bennison, Palamatic’s marketing and customer relations manager. Woodworking facilities are at a high risk of fires and explosions due to the unavoidable presence of flammable material in the form of wood and wood products, sawdust, etc. Ignition sources can range from potentially faulty electrical wiring, cutting and welding operations, sparking tools, propellant actuated tools, to even operators (eg smoking). There is also the potential for static electrical discharges and lightning. In response to this risk, Palamatic has developed a range of ATEX-suitable (atmospheric explosibles) lifting systems and upgrade packages for existing vacuum lifting equipment to give companies the peace of mind and confidence to operate safely within hazardous environments.
FP311_Pages.indd 64
“Some of the ATEX safety measures offered include earth continuity certification, ATEX components, use of suitable materials, etc, dependant on the specific hazardous rating of the area and process.,” explains Matt. “For additional support on this contact our experts at our HQ in Chesterfield. “Applications we regularly provide equipment for include loading and unloading vertical panel
saws, beam saws, dimension saws, flat-bed CNC stations edgebanders and laminators, paint lines, tilt tables. “The most common wood materials handled by our lifting systems include Trespa Jumbo boards, Spandrel panels, MDF, MFC, chipboard, wood, plywood, Sterling board, plasterboard and Polycarbonate. Weights up to 350kg can be picked up.”

Wood products handled include fire doors, panel doors, furniture, staircases, planks, timber sections, laminate surfaces and cabinets. “We are also often asked to rotate boards through 90° or 180° for loading and unloading purposes. Another request we get is to grip doors by their edges, instead of using suction on the flat face, for example to avoid wet paint/glue, which our systems can do with ease. “Our philosophy is to provide equipment fit for the purpose, so all applications will be looked at by our engineers to design the correct solution.” The gantry that the lifting systems are suspended on are critical to offering an ergonomic solution that works for the operator. “We can provide H style gantry systems to cover large areas, but our smaller swing jibs and low headroom centre posts can fit in to areas where space is an issue and work perfectly well. “With our 22,000ft2 factory based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, we are well placed to visit customer sites, and for customers to send us samples to test prior to us manufacturing their vacuum tube lifter. We have a skilled field engineering team to install the systems and come in to train your operators,” says Matt. “Due to the high demand on lifting systems in the woodworking industry we recommend companies take up a service contract to ensure their systems are kept in good working area. “If you have an application you would like us to come and look at, please visit our website.” 01246 452054 sales@palamatic.com www.palamatic.com

Massive time savings and improved efficiency with Combilift at RH Wilson RH Wilson (Lakes) Ltd, situated as the name suggests in the Lake District, is an independent privately owned timber importing company, run by joint owners Ann and Rodney Dalton. When they took over the business in 2013, one of Rodney’s priorities was to improve the efficiency of storage, handling and stock location procedures. Thanks to a combination of Combilift multidirectional forklifts and racking in the 40,000ft² warehousing areas, some startling results have been achieved. The company specialises in grading timber for specific end use, whether it be redwood and hardwood for joineries making doors and windows, or whitewood for pallet and packaging manufacturers. It delivers its wide range of products “from Guernsey to Glasgow” from its base in Kirkby Stephen and also offers bespoke sawing, cross-cutting, grading, planing and moulding facilities. Packs of products were previously block stacked and moved around with two-directional sideloaders or counterbalance trucks. “We did a detailed study of how long it was taking us to retrieve a specific pack and were alarmed at the figures,” said Rodney.

“We were spending a substantial amount of time a day moving packs around and needed at least two employees to do this so it really added up in terms of hours and manpower. My first thought was out with free stacking, in with as much racking as possible and then find a manoeuvrable forklift capable of working in tight spaces.” Following advice from Steve Tomlinson of Combilift and racking specialists, the new system was installed in October 2018. “The time saving has been enormous,” says Rodney. “We are down to five minutes per pack – or four minutes 23 seconds to be precise! – which makes a huge difference when dealing with the four to seven artics a day that we typically load or unload. Quick stock location enables us to adhere to just-in-time delivery schedules. A knock-on bonus is that we now only need 30 minutes for the monthly stocktake compared to around two and a half hours previously.” The new racking enabled three extra working aisles to be created, with widths of 2370mm – down from over 3000mm needed with the old system – and going to a height of 5.5m also created more vertical storage. 300 packs of timber with lengths ranging from just over 2m to almost 6m can now be accommodated.
The 4t capacity of the newest of the two Combilifts on site, a C4000 diesel powered model, copes easily when the heaviest 3.5t loads need to be lifted to the top bays. It is fitted with guide rollers for guided aisle operation, making it quick and easy for drivers to access and travel down the aisles. This system also enhances safety procedures as well as reducing the risk of product damage. Rodney was familiar with the Combilift brand as he had a C3000 model at a previous business and was impressed with its reliability as well as the engineering, quality and the general ethos of the Irish manufacturer: “I like the relative simplicity of Combilift’s products – more high tech can just mean more problems in my experience – and our local service engineer finds the truck straightforward to maintain. “The racking and the Combilift were not the cheapest options on the market, but as I have found out over many years it can cost money trying to save it, so we are extremely happy with the way this has worked out. So much so that we are looking at another Combilift when we embark on the next phase of our planned expansion.” www.combilift.com www.rhwilsontimber.co.uk

Renowned bed and mattress manufacturer, Relyon, has taken delivery of a fleet of six new Mitsubishi forklift trucks and four ancillary machines from local dealer Bristol Forklifts. With a 150-year pedigree for creating high quality beds, Relyon supplies a range of prestige products with the focus on natural fillings and bespoke options. The company distributes through a number of channels, from independent stores to national retailers. To meet high demand for its products, the Somerset-based manufacturer consulted local Mitsubishi dealer Bristol Forklifts for a handling solution. Laurie Farley, logistics manager at Relyon says: “As one of the biggest ownbrand manufacturers in the UK, we wanted to expand our fleet of trucks to meet the demands of our busy working environment.” Having surveyed the site in detail, Bristol Forklifts recommended three different models to accommodate the different working environments. For indoor-outdoor duties the three-tonne, FD30N GRENDiA diesel truck was an obvious choice — in this case fitted with the manufacturer’s rigid VersaCab panel cabin. The package supplied by Bristol Forklifts also included three PBPL15 lithium-ion powered hand pallet trucks. Extremely agile and able to work in the most confined spaces, these new machines bridge the gap between hand pallet trucks and conventional – far more expensive – powered pallet trucks. Two PBP20VN flip-down platform powered pallet trucks were also supplied, both with 1600mm long forks to accommodate the customer’s longer loads. Relyon also took delivery of a new pedestrian reach truck, an electric scissor lift, a foam clamp attachment and a bespoke weighing platform – 2000 x 2500mm – for weighing bales of foam. 0845 371 3048 info@red-diamond.co.uk

Masterwood opens new showroom On 15th July 2019 Masterwood GB started operating from its new offices near Gatwick Airport with facilities for our first showroom. The specially-designed and built offices will allow the company to grow and take on more office staff to deal with servicing of machines, spare parts and training. This is an exciting time for Masterwood GB coming after the company achieved 10 years of trading in February this year, although many of our staff have been connected with Masterwood Spa for up to 30 years. The company is now working on the showroom which will start to be operational from the end of September 2019. Once all the facilities are set up, various open days will be arranged to demonstrate the full capabilities

of the latest CNC machines and all software packages that Masterwood has to offer. Bespoke product demonstrations will also be available for existing and new customers. Dedicated software packages for stairs, windows, cabinets, doors, furniture, and 3D are all available through Masterwood as a complete package – what the company says is a unique situation in this industry. Masterwood will be offering bespoke training packages to suit all levels and abilities for both CNC and software with its experienced technicians. With the uncertainty of Brexit and how imports into the country will be affected, the extra space will allow Masterwood to keep a larger stock of more vital spare parts, so in the event of a break
down, the company will be able to get a machine up and running in the quickest time possible. A large supply of tooling, cones and collets – as well as second-hand parts that are no longer obtainable for the older machines – will also be kept on site. While Masterwood GB has always helped customers who have brought second-hand machines elsewhere and will be pleased to continue doing so, it will now be able to deal directly in more second-hand Masterwood CNCs. For an updated list or information on available CNC machines, contact the office by phone or by email. 01293 402700 www.masterwood.com/en

Freud’s new outperforming solutions for nesting applications in competitive markets Nesting is a very efficient and versatile method of producing components out of large, raw boards. Rather than using a beam saw and a CNC, the nesting CNC allows the operations to be performed on a single machine, with an optimisation of the production time and results. Consequently, the demand for CNC nesting application tools is continuously growing, being particularly useful to speed up the manufacturing of shaped parts that normally require cutting, drilling, grooving and sizing. In order to support a large base of users, including kitchen manufacturers and furniture makers, with a solution that enables them to thrive in a highly demanding market, Freud, the world-leading manufacturer of premium cutting tools, has expanded its superior quality product portfolio, launching new ranges dedicated to a variety of CNC applications. Freud’s new Solid Carbide Cutters and Spoilboard Surfacing Cutters – counting hundreds of products – are the result of the finest raw materials, an expertise acquired over nearly 60-year experience in the cutting industry, continuous investments in R&D as well as the best-in-class manufacturing machines. Thanks to a new, dedicated and premium Titanium Cobalt Carbide formula, in-house manufactured by Freud’s new premium ranges for the CNC nesting applications
Freud and specifically formulated to achieve a high level of hardness and tenacity, these newly designed nesting tools guarantee the greatest resistance to wear and impact and a lifetime prolonged by 50%. The exceptional durability is but one of the main benefits offered to the users. According to the company, both ranges deliver, in fact, remarkable cutting performance and vibrationfree cuts, due to tight mechanical tolerances and tool dynamic balancing, combined with new flute designs and geometries, for the Solid Carbide Cutters – a result of Freud’s partnership with the main CNC machine manufactures – and with extraordinarily precise knives, for the Spoilboard Surfacing Cutters. Additionally, these cutting tools, engineered to deliver a flawless finishing, leverage special helix designs and geometries (Solid Carbide Cutters) and the shear angle positioning of the knives (Spoilboard Surfacing Cutters). Freud’s new ranges for CNC nesting applications are, therefore, a recommended choice for users which demand superior cutting performance, impeccable finishing and exceptional durability and which aim to maximise production, while reducing manufacturing costs. The optimum solution to be always competitive! www.freud.it

Italian saw blade manufacturer puts its trust in Vollmer
The Vollmer machine at Moreschi
Good business is typically founded on trusting relationships. The Vollmer and Moreschi companies have worked together for more than 25 years creating a strong and mutually beneficial partnership. Steep mountain passes and narrow winding roads. This is how the first Vollmer sharpening machine found its way through the Northern Italian Alps more than 25 years ago. Its destination was saw blade manufacturer Moreschi in the small town of Vilminore di Scalve. A strong partnership has linked these two companies ever since. Moreschi relies on the Vollmer CHD, CHF and CM model of grinding machines for sharpening carbide-tipped circular
saws with precision and the Loroch KSC-710 series of machines for sharpening HSS circular saws. Brothers Marco and Luciano Moreschi founded Moreschi in 1987 in the Alpine town of Vilminore di Scalve. Starting out as a grinding centre for small workshops, the company soon began specialising in the production of custommade circular and band saw blades. Moreschi now employs more than 40 staff and supplies its products to customers in Italy and beyond. The

saw blade manufacturer also runs a grinding centre in Poland. Founded on family values and reliable partners Despite its growth and international focus, tradition and family play a major part in the company’s success. Moreschi shares close ties with its home in the Bergamasque Alps, where it was founded. Now, the second generation of the family is involved in the business, with Marco Moreschi’s son Mattia and daughter Gloria Moreschi, also working for the family-run company. “For us, what matters is not only continuing our family tradition; it is also essential to have reliable partners so we can offer our customers the best saw blades available,” explains Marco Moreschi, CEO of Moreschi Srl. “This is why we have been relying on the grinding machines from Biberach since 1991. We are currently using more than 15 Vollmer and Loroch machines at our company.” Vollmer precision – from small to large Moreschi mainly uses grinding machines from the CHD, CHF and CM model series. They allow for precise sharpening without the saw blades having to be clamped in more than one position. This makes it possible to machine a wide range of saw blades with different diameters and tooth

77 geometries. What particularly impresses staff is how efficient and simple the machines are to use, as well as the reliability they offer. Eight CNC-controlled axes and measuring equipment make the CHD 270 from the Swabian sharpening specialist ideal for automatically machining carbide-tipped circular saw blades with an outer diameter of between 80 and 840mm. Thanks to a fixed grinding unit and its solid structure, the CM 300 grinding machine achieves outstanding precision for circular saw blades with a diameter between 200 and 1440mm. When it comes to extremely large dimensions, right up to circular saw blades with a diameter of 2200mm, Moreschi uses Vollmer’s CHM and CHMF 400 grinding machines. These two models, with five CNC axes each, grind the tooth face and tooth top of the saw teeth, as well as their sides. Custom-made saw blades for a wide range of applications Moreschi’s international customer base includes numerous companies from the steel and metal alloy industry, meaning that the saw blades are used for saws produced by large manufacturers, as well as in saw mills. Since customer requirements can differ greatly, Moreschi provides advice that is tailored to each individual customer with custom-produced saw blades. The saw blades cut materials that require exemplary precision and the materials being cut

include steel and metal alloys as well as wood, plastics and composite materials that all vary in their hardness and dimensions. To ensure a high standard of quality, Moreschi performs several trials before the final product reaches the customer. The company is also always working on further developing its products and technologies to find ideal solutions for its customers’ various application areas. Moreschi does this by exchanging knowledge and ideas with Italian universities. “Medium-sized manufacturers of saw blades, such as Moreschi, help their
customers by providing consultation, production and maintenance services. For this, they require automated sharpening machines that offer high precision while being easy to use, even for small quantities,” states Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the Vollmer Group. “The fact that Moreschi puts its trust in Vollmer makes us proud and we are hopeful that our sharpening machines from Biberach will continue to find their way to Vilminore di Scalve in the future.” 0115 949 1040 www.vollmer-group.com

The easy way to rip timber The MZ LC heavy-duty rip saw has been designed for the accurate and safe cutting of primarily solid timber boards, planks, sheet material or SIP panels, plastics and composites. Unlike many old-style straight-line rip saw saws, where the timber is fed through the machine and the blade stays stationary, on the LC, the timber stays stationary whilst the blade moves. This gives it a number of distinct advantages including easy loading with one-man operation, enhanced operator safety, high cutting precision and more flexibility. The LC is available with a range of cutting lengths from 2.2m to 6.2m. Standard features include a presser clamp along the full length of the machine, a laser line, motorised rear fence with 300mm saw-to-fence capacity, vertical lifting of the fence to allow for larger material to be loaded or to use the machine as a cross cut (optional). The saw carriage movement is on precision linear slides with heavy-duty rack and pinion drive and variable speed. It is also possible to select the cutting height – which is 145mm maximum – using a 500mm diameter blade, making it ideal for cutting even the biggest timber sections. Operation of the machine is very safe with finger guards covering the complete front side of the pressure beam, whilst on the rear side there are mesh guards. The eye level colour touch screen control unit gives the operator the possibility to store a number of required cut

sizes, or just manually enter a size to be cut. Options include idle or driven front/rear crosscut tables with the choice of either mechanical or pneumatic flip stops, the facility to increase the rear fence to saw capacity to either 600 or 1300mm, and lastly, a built in conveyor to take away cut waste parts. The Schelling LS1
Schelling – something for everyone At the recent Ligna event in Germany, Schelling demonstrated that innovation and product development are top of the list in its values. The successful Austrian panel sizing saws and plants business has completely revised the circular workcell concept of its Lot Size One panel cutting cell, for batch size one production. The redesigned compact circular workcell concept integrates new and innovative solutions into one overall solution that’s highly attractive, both from a technological and an economic viewpoint. Not only does the new system include leaner processes, it also fits into a smaller floor space, offers reduced cycle times, and consumes far less energy than its predecessor. The new gantry-free circular workcell concept permits almost uninterrupted saw activity. The vacuum manipulators move the strips, without lifting them, from one circulator trolley to the next, using a brush table, facilitating a narrower return conveyor system. Schelling says the new design of the LS1 really is the next step in automation for panel cutting, and is showing it off with pride.

Something a little smaller? Schelling has a vast product range. For smaller manufacturers who cannot justify the use of a large plant, or for a more bespoke solution, Schelling can offer something to get the job done perfectly. Single cuts or large packages? The fh4 accomplishes any task quickly and efficiently. An additional Duplus2 infeed carriage permits simultaneous cutting of strips with different cross sectional areas. In combination with a separate sweep-off carriage, the production capacity of the
saw can be increased by up to 20%. The s45 performs mitre cuts of 0-46° effortlessly with the panel sizing cut. All of this is possible up to a length of 5800mm. Also, mitres with glued PVC edging and flat mitre joints can be processed perfectly up to that length. In this process, CNC axes control the height adjustment and the panel infeed with a precision of 0.05mm. 01937 586340 sales@schelling.co.uk www.schelling.co.uk

Omega and Grass to jointly shape the future of home living
Omega’s Chippendale kitchen brand
UK kitchen manufacturer Omega plc and fittings specialist Grass have agreed a longterm brand partnership. Urbanisation, housing shortages, changes in purchasing behaviour, the growing importance of online business, price pressure, digital transformation, the smart home, batch size one manufacturing, increasing competitive pressure and, not least, Brexit – the challenges facing the European furniture industry are many – reason enough for these two companies to combine their strengths, utilise synergies and work together to tackle the changes. In addition to joint marketing activities, the development of new sales concepts will be a major focus. Omega and Grass have announced a wideranging collaboration. The goal is to strengthen the competitiveness of both companies and, in times of rapid changes in the furniture industry, to combine strengths and jointly master the challenges that lie ahead. “Albert Einstein once said that sharing knowledge is critical for progress. Forming the right alliances for progressive furniture concepts is therefore a logical and appropriate step,” says Grass Group CEO Albert Trebo, commenting on the background to the forward-looking partnership. “Omega’s key competence is crafting quality kitchens. Our key competence is developing functional movement systems. Together, we’re a unique team of furniture specialists who can herald a new era in furniture making and marketing.”
FP311_Pages.indd 82
The brand partnership is aimed at enabling both companies to develop new furniture concepts, to ensure the manufacture of optimally matched furniture elements and functional components, to create the perfect offer for the relevant target groups, and to explore new sales channels – while preserving their unique brand attributes. Two companies invest in the future “Growth is only possible if you create the right conditions,” says Albert. In this respect, both brand partners are equally well prepared. Over the past seven years, Omega has invested some £25m in the automation and expansion of its manufacturing base in South Yorkshire. In addition to an in-house paint-spraying facility and a wide range of new automated manufacturing equipment, a new 76,000ft2 warehouse has been built, enabling capacity to be doubled. Grass also recently invested around €100m in the future: in mid-2018, the foundation stone was laid for a new distribution and logistics centre covering 43,000m2 in Hohenems, Austria. For the company belonging to the Würth Group, this is the biggest investment in its history, marks a clear commitment to its Vorarlberg location and reflects the fact that the specialist for movement systems is setting its sights on growth. The way we live is set to change How will we be living in 15 years from now? Futurologists agree on one thing: by 2030,
70% of the world’s population will be living in megacities. Today’s metropolises will grow into megacities within a few years. Housing will become a scarce and unaffordable commodity. It is therefore inevitable that the requirements to be met by architecture and furniture will change completely. Where will we buy furniture in 15 years’ time? Will we actually still be buying it, or will it be hired or shared? Will the furniture showroom in the industrial area be the first port of call, or will we order our kitchens and furniture online? Perhaps it will all be entirely different. For many years, Grass Global brand manager Harald Klüh has maintained an ongoing dialogue with trend researchers and other experts worldwide on the topics of the home, work and life in the future. He envisions the following scenario: “I could imagine home living in the future as being like staying at a hotel. We shall be using fully equipped homes, rather like today’s holiday apartments.” The question that arises with this vision is who will decide which furniture is placed in these ‘apartments’? Who will be the customers of Omega and Grass in the future? The two companies intend to explore this and many other questions, and look for new solutions. Project business as growth driver In the next five years, Europe can already expect to see a growing demand for fully furnished properties. What has long become the norm in Asia, the Middle East, North America and the UK will also establish itself in Europe as a whole –
23/08/2019 15:20
83 large residential projects that are handed over to the purchasers or tenants on a turnkey basis. In contrast with today, fully equipped homes will be offered in the future. Kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedrooms will all be fully furnished and fitted, and ready to receive the occupants. Even the TV set, sound system and coffee machine will be included in the price of the package. “Housing projects of this kind have their own set of rules and their own particular requirements,” says Harald Klüh. “Omega is optimally equipped for this business and is the ideal partner for Grass.” Omega supplies high-quality British-made cabinetry and certainly ranks amongst the most ambitious kitchen manufacturers in the UK. Since its foundation in 1992, the company has evolved into a major player in the sector and is regarded as a pioneer in the areas of design, computer-controlled manufacturing and marketing. Its branded kitchens are sold through specialist retailers throughout the UK. Flat-pack or pre-assembled – Omega is one of the few furniture manufacturers that offer both options. This special feature makes the Yorkshire-based kitchen specialist an expert when it comes to providing advice and support for national and international property clients. 1+1 = 3 … the whole is greater than the sum of the two brands Harald Klüh regards collaborations as the key to success and sees the new brand alliance as a huge opportunity for both collaboration partners. He knows that collaboration between brands has established itself as a highly successful business model. Brands can mutually energise each other and together grow their business. Brand partnerships of this kind are always of particular interest when two areas of expertise harmonise and form a consistent and complementary combination. “When, for example, Recaro seats are fitted in the new Ferrari model or Grass movement systems in the new Omega kitchen, then both Grass Group CEO Albert Trebo
FP311_Pages.indd 83
brands can profit from each other,” explains the brand expert. In addition to the reciprocal transfer of brand attributes, the highlighting of brand-name components raises awareness, enables differentiation and creates additional selling points. Omega moved by Grass The importance of movement systems in the assessment of kitchens and furniture can be observed very precisely at furniture trade shows. When consumers step up to an item of furniture on display, their first reaction is always the same: they touch the exhibit and open a drawer, a door or a flap. Furniture can only be experienced by opening and closing it. Movement systems bring furniture to life. “Strictly speaking, what we contribute with our drawer, hinge and flap systems is not only superlative functional technology but also, and in particular, an emotional experience,” says Harald Klüh. “And to ensure that the value of this emotional experience is perceived by the consumer and understood as an added value, it’s important to draw attention to the special qualities of our movement systems. This is precisely what we hope to achieve through our brand partnership with Omega.” Grass global brand manager Harald Klüh
Anyone who buys Omega should know that Grass movement systems are inside Grass supplies to the world’s top-notch furniture manufacturers – be they Italian star designers, luxury craftsmen, fully automated volume manufacturers or the innovative cabinetmaker around the corner. Fittings from Grass make the difference, ensure perfect movement and have been proven millions of times over. Worldwide, 30 million households have kitchens with Grass fittings. “We’re the leading global developer and manufacturer of functional movement systems for exclusive furniture,” adds Albert. “We shall be contributing this expertise to the brand partnership with Omega.” The UK kitchen manufacturer has long recognised Grass products as highly reliable, innovative functional components. Omega has been using movement technology from Grass for almost 20 years. Leading this long-standing partnership towards a successful future is the goal of the agreed collaboration. Despite the uncertainties of the UK’s upcoming departure from the European Union, the companies Omega and Grass have decided in favour of a long-term collaboration. “Working together will enable us to master whatever the future may bring,” says Albert. www.grass.at Omega plc chairman Sir Bob Murray

Eight rising stars complete Young Professional Industry Experience
Back row from left: Hattie Speed, Jess Bowyer, Kieran Gunn, Emily Nickless, Ryan Goddard, Carl Sunderland, Oliver Clegg and Josh Stancer Front row: senior warden David Woodward, master Dids Macdonald OBE, third assistant Debbie Johnson
Eight of the best and brightest junior employees in the furniture industry have completed The Furniture Makers’ Company’s unique Young Professional Industry Experience. The Young Professional Industry Experience was launched in 2014 to give companies the opportunity to invest in the development of their employees and send future leaders of the sector on a course of continuous professional development like no other. This year’s participants were Jess Bowyer, sourcing and corporate social responsibility manager at Ocee Design; Oliver Clegg, junior quality assurance analyst at Camira Fabrics; Ryan Goddard, operations graduate at Herman Miller; Kieran Gunn, technical support at Ercol; Emily Nickless, digital marketing manager at Parker Knoll; Hattie Speed, design engineer at Ercol; Josh Stancer, business development/ trainee veneer specialist at Mundy Veneer; and Carl Sunderland, development CAD technician at Parker Knoll. The group spent three weeks across June and July travelling around the UK visiting 21 companies to learn about the furniture supply chain, including raw materials and components, manufacturing, retailing, buying, pricing, marketing, merchandising, intellectual property, consumer law, after sales and customer service. The group presented their collective findings to representatives of the host companies as well as other industry dignitaries at Furniture Makers’ Hall, London on Thursday 25 July. During the presentation, the group identified five themes – Brexit, an ageing workforce,
FP311_Pages.indd 84
sustainability, online retailing/changing consumer habits and employee engagement – that were having an impact on the sector and put forward solutions to the perceived threats. Dids Macdonald OBE, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “The culmination of this unique three-week intensive programme of zig-zagging around the UK was a wonderful celebration of learning. The excellent presentation, reviewing the key issues within the sector and possible solutions, provided food for thought for us all. The experience would not have happened without the commitment of our corporate members and supporters.” Oliver Clegg, junior quality assurance analyst at Camira Fabrics, said: “To pinpoint one single thing that I’ve gained the most from the programme is a very difficult task, but it would have to be how much my eyes have been opened to the industry. If you think you know everything about it, you don’t! This really is an unrivalled insight into the furniture industry.” Hattie Speed, design engineer at Ercol, said: “I found the programme an incredibly enriching experience that taught me a lot about the scope of this industry and the role I can play within it. Meeting other young people also starting out on their career pathways was one of the most beneficial aspects of the course because it made me realise I am not alone in some of the difficulties I am facing, and it gave me a better insight in how to overcome some of my own individual challenges.” Kieran Gunn, technical support at Ercol, said: “I am so pleased to have had the chance to
take part in this course. One of the highlights for me was meeting the other candidates and learning about their roles. Visiting the wide range of companies was very exciting. Being able to see how they work and ask questions about challenges they face was very helpful.” Josh Stancer, business development/trainee veneer specialist at Mundy Veneer, said: “The most notable aspect of the course was the exposure to a vast array of companies within the furniture industry. The number of different environments we visited and different process we got to experience really shows the depth of the furniture industry. This exposure will be crucial within my personal development and more growth within my own company.” Emily Nickless, digital marketing manager at Parker Knoll, said: “I found the programme to be a very enlightening and fruitful experience. I personally gained so much out of visiting other manufacturing facilities given my marketing background, which will allow me to have a more holistic approach to my role.” After the presentation, the Master, Dids Macdonald, awarded each candidate with a certificate of completion. To support their continued development, each of them will be paired with one of the Company’s members to act as their mentor. For those interested in sending an employee on the programme in 2020, contact Anne Sampson, educational events and campaigns manager. 020 7562 8523 anne@furnituremakers.org.uk

“I can’t understand why all wood waste generating businesses don’t have one…” The Cheshire Kitchen Company has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating. Matthew Smith, director at The Cheshire Kitchen Company had heard good things about wood waste heaters, so started to undertake some research. He soon realised that, by investing in a wood waste heater, he could burn all the wood offcuts generated from the joinery workshop, plus all the packaging and cardboard waste, so he would no longer need to hire a skip each week, saving the business between £600£800 a month. Plus, the business would save money on heating, as the 5000ft2 workshop had to be heated by electric heaters in the cold winter months. Matthew says: “Once we started to crunch some numbers, we realised it just made sense. The combined cost of heating and waste disposal could cost the business almost £2000 some months, and we realised that this expense could just disappear if we invested in a wood waste heater, so we found and contacted Wood Waste Technology to organise a site survey and quote…” After reviewing costs and performance, the business purchased a WT10 heater, giving enough spare capacity should a decision be made to extend the business premises at some point in the future. The heater was installed into The Cheshire Kitchen Company’s manufacturing unit by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Matthew says: “Having now experienced life with a wood waste heater, I can’t understand why all wood waste generating businesses don’t have one. The heater makes the workshop lovely and warm, so we’ve gone from working in multiple layers to being able to work comfortably in tee-shirts even during the coldest months, plus we’re saving a huge amount of money by reducing our waste disposal and heating bills. “There aren’t many things you buy that deliver everything that the salespeople promised, but our wood waste heater certainly has! The whole

process has been hassle-free, from getting a quote to the installation and delivery. We would highly recommend the products and team at Wood Waste Technology!” Kurt Cockroft says: “Whatever the primary reason for purchase – heat or waste disposal – a wood waste heater is a cost-effective and productive solution for companies that generate waste wood, and some companies get payback on the investment in less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions has helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey,
design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

90 ADVERTORIAL
Solid biomass combined heat and power (CHP) with hydrogen storage and fuel cells After leading the way in the promotion of biomass heating and combined heat and power systems throughout the UK since 2012, AFS Biomass is now proud to announce the latest technological advance, the generation and storage of hydrogen to be used to generate electricity from hydrogen fuel cells. Hydrogen is the most abundant fuel source on the planet and when used to generate electricity the only emission is water. The most eco-friendly form of energy available which, in combination with a SyngaSmart solid biomass CHP unit, will dramatically reduce your carbon footprint. Most companies in the woodworking industry have very large electrical consumption, with high peak demand during working hours and low demand at night and/or week-ends. The normal solution for CHP users has been to export excess electricity to the grid. This can often involve an expensive DNO connection and a reduced payment for the electricity exported. By using the excess generated in low demand periods to generate and store hydrogen, this can be used to generate extra electricity in high demand periods, saving money against the high cost of electricity. Solid biomass CHP, the generation of both heat
and electricity from biomass, also qualifies for the RHI scheme. Designed to reward businesses which contribute towards the UK’s carbon reduction targets and payable for 20 years for all the metered eligible heat generated from biomass, it provides a very welcome additional income stream. AFS Biomass is proud to offer the SyngaSmart co-generation system. Manufactured in Italy to exacting standards the SyngaSmart offers an integrated solution for heat and power generation through pyro-gasification, the use of high temperatures in a low oxygen environment to convert biomass into a gas called syngas. This is used to fuel standard internal combustion engines which turn the syngas energy into electric and thermal power. It is ideal for the woodworking industry which

FP311_Pages.indd 90
SyngaSmart 120kW solid biomass CHP plant
inherently suffers from the punitively high cost of electricity to run CNC machines and more, often in poorly insulated factories requiring space and process heating. All solid wood waste can be used, either as wood chip or as briquettes from poorly shredded waste, sawdust and shavings. So why choose a combined solid biomass CHP and hydrogen system; • Huge, ever-increasing savings against current fossil fuel and electricity costs which continue to rise. • Wood waste disposal savings – create energy from waste rather than pay for its removal. • Mitigate against future carbon taxes. • Enhance green credentials – claim almost carbon neutrality for heating and electricity. • Eligible for the Government RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) scheme. AFS Biomass Ltd are leading the way in the promotion and implementation of all forms of biomass and hydrogen energy generation. A major partner with SyngaSmart, it is one of the most respected and reliable biomass CHP manufacturers in the market today. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers in the UK, AFS Biomass offers the design, installation and ongoing maintenance to many diverse sectors including furniture and kitchen manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies and more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients. Whether looking for a traditional biomass heating system or for the latest state-of-the-art technology in the field of solid biomass combined heat and power and hydrogen fuel cells, now is the time to act for maximum benefit. Fossil fuel costs continue to rise, carbon taxes become evermore punitive and the RHI is, for the time being, extremely attractive. Why not join the ever-increasing number of businesses helping themselves and the environment through the adoption of biomass for future energy needs? AFS Biomass are in prime position to help you achieve those goals. 0161 302 2851 info@afsbiomass.com www.afsbiomass.com

A no-compromise solution in listed vicarage conversion When a bespoke joiner was called on to create a door to replace an existing heritage window, as part of the restoration of a listed former vicarage in York, it was clear that no element of it could be achieved with an off-the-shelf solution. The door not only had to be specially made to function in the original brickwork that had housed the window but it also had to match perfectly with an existing door nearby – and both the archetypally classical setting and the building’s listed status meant this had to be achieved without compromise. A large part of that challenge was to find a paint not only durable enough to maintain appearance and weather resistance but from a manufacturer with the capacity to create a bespoke colour and perfect visual match. The solution was Modifica QD from Mighton Ankerstuy, a quick drying coating that was designed with factory finishing in mind for Accoya as well as conventional timber. The door itself had to be designed from scratch to function in what had been a window frame, as Robert Bailey-Hague MD of BaileyHague Joinery explains: “The frame had to be made specially in sections for the doors to open out fully without protruding brickwork getting in the way. It also had to match the existing door,
including making the Georgian bars so that they were aligned with each other. Mighton chairman Mike Derham says: “Mighton Ankerstuy QD is ideal for factory finishing because it can be touch-dry within an hour in the right conditions. That is a significant advantage over conventional coatings, especially with such a bespoke design. “We also take great pride in our colour
matching facility and this application clearly shows that there is no need for a coater to compromise with an off-the-shelf colour if it would not provide the perfect end result.” To learn more about Mighton Products or to order a catalogue, visit the company’s website. 01223 497097 www.mightonproducts.com www.baileyhaguejoinery.co.uk
No job is a bridge too far for Morris Joinery
An enterprising Shrewsbury joinery business has put its considerable skills to use to construct a bridge for a rural Shropshire estate. So big was the timber-clad, steel structure that it was made at Morris Joinery’s base at Bicton Business Park then disassembled so that it could be transported 20 miles away, craned into position and then rebuilt in its permanent position. The bridge was commissioned for a privately-owned south Shropshire Estate to replace an ageing wooden bridge with one strong enough to accommodate the largest tractors and farm vehicles. The replacement bridge, 14m long, 4.6m wide and PBSOct18.indd 1
FP311_Pages.indd 92
weighing 26 tonnes was crafted from timber and galvanised steel. Joinery team members clad the steelwork in prime grade European green oak to give the appearance of a rustic wooden bridge. They spent 10 weeks working on the project at their Bicton Business Park base and a further six weeks on the agricultural and shooting estate, with the foundations and civils works carried out by Morris Property. Morris Joinery offers a full range of commercial and domestic services. It is part of a fifth-generation family business group which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. www.morris-joinery.co.uk
