Comment The state of the industry is something I am regularly quizzed about on my travels. Once upon a time, this country and our neighbours manufactured the overwhelming majority of furniture consumed here. Moreover, we were a global furniture manufacturing powerhouse, exporting to all parts of the empire, and the rest of the world. Today, many would have you believe that the UK is just stuffed full of imports and makes precious little any more – but this is most definitely not the case. The most recent figures published by the British Furniture Confederation (BFC) say that the turnover of UK furniture and furnishings manufacturing reached £11.83b in 2017, a YoY increase of +4.8%. Of that, furniture was the largest proportion at £8.76b – emanating from 8500 companies employing some 120,000 individuals. And what of the level of imports domestic manufacturers compete with? Imports of furniture into the UK also increased in 2017 to £6b, but are looking as though they will be falling from that high point, as the impact of Brexit becomes apparent – so potentially some good news there. Of those imports, China takes top billing (33%), followed by Italy, Poland and Germany at around 10% each. In 2017, kitchen manufacturing had registered a return to form, more than doubling since 2011 from £1b to over £2.3b. Mattress production has also flourished, up +29% from 2014 to £0.85b in 2017 – possibly fuelled by the recent growth of mattress-in-a-box concepts.

Imports from the European Community stood at £2.73b in 2017, an increase of +10.6% and +23.8% on previous years. In terms of exports, the overall trade gap is £4.87b, but the signs are that this is shrinking. In conclusion, the figures evidence the impressive resilience of the British furniture manufacturing sector, and, despite Brexit concerns, we have an industry that is in reasonable health and provides opportunities for smaller, flexible manufacturers and well as the larger concerns – so, unward and upward.

Mighton applauded for security innovation Mighton has been officially presented with a certificate from the British Standards Institution (BSI) in recognition of achieving the Government’s Code of Practice for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) security for its Avia Apple HomeKit smart lock – the first product of any kind to receive the ETSI TS 103 645 accreditation. The Code of Practice, which is recognised internationally, was introduced by the UK Government in October 2018 in response to growing concern about the cyber security of smart enabled devices in the home. Not only does the standard help to ensure the privacy and security of consumers when using their smart home products, it is also designed to prevent the threat of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks that are launched from poorly secured IoT devices.

Mighton’s chairman, Mike Derham, and marketing director, Jim Herrington, received the award from the BSI’s global digital and connected product certification director, David Mudd, BSI UK & Ireland MD, Anne Scorey, and IoT business development manager, Stephen Thomas. David Mudd comments: “Well done to Mighton Products for achieving compliance to the first globally-applicable standard
for consumer IoT security. Best practice is more than just good encryption, strong passwords and addressing other system design issues, it’s also about responsible disclosure, software support and effective user guidance. It’s great to see companies taking this fully on board.” Avia – which carries PAS 24 accreditation and features 256-bit data encryption for enhanced security – is the first Apple
HomeKit lever-operated smart multipoint lock. Available to UK trade customers exclusively through hardware distributor, Mila, it is a full-function lock that can be controlled using iPad, iPhone, Apple Watch, keypad and fob, combined with the peace of mind of a traditional key and TS 007 three-star cylinder. Access via facial recognition is a further impressive innovation that can be activated by an optional accessory. Once connected to the secure and stable Apple HomeKit platform, homeowners can check on the status of their entrance door via the Avia app, including a full audit trail that records all activity, and can also extend and control access to additional users – for example service providers – from anywhere in the world. www.mightonproducts.com

On the leading edge 7-9th November SCM Technology Centre, Thiene
An event dedicated to the new range of flexible edgebanding systems is scheduled this November at SCM’s impressive Technology Centre in Thiene, Italy. The three-day On The Leading Edge will focus on the latest edgebanding solutions for batch one and Industry 4.0: Stefani rocket H, Stefani cell H, Stefani cell E. State-of-the-art technologies for the furniture industry which combine the highest levels of productivity and quality with endless possibilities. An increasingly more sophisticated productivity is now available thanks to the integration of the edgebanding machine in cells and plants fitted with rollers, panel return devices, automatic loading and unloading systems, assisted by robots and fitted with IoT sensors to control the machine functions in an instant.
FP312_Pages.indd 10
At the same time, unique machining accuracy and quality on any kind of panel is reaily achievable, even the most delicate ones and more complex materials, thanks to a new Round 2 Servo rounding unit and RT-X grinding unit and the latest optimised devices for a perfect line of glue. These are the main new entries for SCM edgebanding taking centre stage at the up and coming open house event entitled On the Leading Edge, due to be held from 7-9th November 2019 at the Technology Centre in Thiene – key point of reference for industry companies, to test the best edgebanding solutions directly on site, with the aid of trained technicians. Stefani cell H: high productivity, maximum customisation and excellent quality Stefani cell H is the new edgebanding cell and square-
edging cell fitted with an automatic panel feeder system, designed to guarantee both production volumes at industrial level as well as a maximum diversification of the production batch. Stefani cell H provides fully efficient machining of components for furniture items for every part of the home –(kitchens, living rooms, sleeping areas, bathrooms, wardrobes and studies – with considerable advantages. • Instant production and financially advantageous both for batches with single panels as well as for average standard stacks, without the need to stop production for a change of format, thickness, ornamentation and gluing quality that occur on a regular basis during
a machining shift • No errors and a guarantee the panels will always be fed in the right direction, thanks to the Side Finder technology, which, via a display in the operator’s area, shows how to position the panel so that it can be correctly machined • Instant availability, even on mobile devices, of the machining information relating to each single panel, wherever it is in the cycle, thanks to the continuous tracking provided by the supervision software • Optimisation of the panel flows and movements which are managed and synchronised by the data sent to the company network: this allows you to choose the best machining quality, gluing quality
27/09/2019 12:21
11 and tool change flexibility within the limited space and with a single operator, thereby considerably optimising production costs. Stefani cell E: the batch one production experience at its simplest Stefani cell E is the new synthesis in entry level edgebanding cells that combine the advantages of a customised production and large volumes with a compact overall design and, above all, with an accessible investment even for SMEs. • Numerical control high technology in line with future market scenarios. Type, colour, edge thickness, position and mortise depth, handling of the protective film and panel dimensions: the highly versatile Stefani cell E allows you to continually feed in and change all these parameters as part of the production flow without it being interrupted. • Simple, integrated and versatile: the multiple configurations available (reloop with robot, or reloop with motorised belts) mean all specific needs in terms of production and machining are met. Feeder, robot or additional movements can be combined to offer maximum flexibility • Whether it be in self-learning mode, with Bar Code/QR code or with supervisor, Stefani cell E is standard programmed for any level of logical and physical integration one wishes to set • New automation to speed up business: the new pickback bridge system for the automatic return of the panels guarantees simple, justin-time production management. This way, the operator can focus solely on feeding the panels back into the edgebander, as simply and ergonomically as possible. Stefani shape technology: the best in softforming for any type of profile As part of SCM’s edgebanding, considerable focus is also being placed on market demands in matters of softforming and JShape, areas in which SCM has led the way for some time now as a genuine specialist in providing simple solutions for use but ones that produce top quality results. The new J-Side kit, in particular, has been designed to solve the problem of complex profiles so
FP312_Pages.indd 11
that the straight edging lines up perfectly with the shaped edging without gaps or projections. There is no longer any need to carry out this machining manually or with an additional procedure thanks to the new SCM solution. Everything is much simpler, faster and more efficient thanks to a new unit that can be fitted on a standard edgebander and completes all the essential stages for an all-round edgebanding, even this finishing. An edgebander equipped like this means any kind of edgebanding problem can be resolved while work continues, without any interruption, precisely as though it were working on a normal straight edge. This is a significant step forward in being able to extend the creative potentials of softforming to a growing number of companies, a solution which is effective with any kind of edge and with different thicknesses that can be applied and worked without interruption. Maestro Active Watch: total control of the process, from the office to the machine The main role during the open days in Thiene will be played by the new supervision and control system Maestro active watch, thanks to its perfect match with the flexible edgebanding lines. Maestro active watch presents a wide range of functions: • Real-time control of the process: it sets and detects the status of the different machines, monitors their production and records their history • Display of the plant layout: SCM software is optimised according to the plant to be supervised, thus allowing the synoptic view of the plant, a visual check in real time of the process in all its production phases, with monitoring of the progress of the pieces along the line • Zero errors in the insertion of the panels in the cell: it always
guarantees the panel insertion introduction with the correct side thanks to the Side Finder technology that shows the operator which edge to insert in the cell next • Simulation of machining times for productivity checks of the cell for checks on production times • Maximum efficiency: it guarantees immediate availability of the machining information relating to each panel, regardless of where the panel is in the cycle thanks to the continuous tracking provided by the supervisor system. Maestro active watch also performs a check of machining
feasibility for each component • Report generator to improve production performance: it allows you to generate production reports by operator, working shift, program etc and send them to the company management software • Maximum productivity for each program launched thanks to the possibility of managing the line by area. 18 INSIGHT
There are many reasons businesses choose to manufacture in the UK. Matt Deighton, managing director of British sofa manufacturer Timeless Chesterfields, explores some of the environmental and ethical benefits of British-made furniture.
The ecological and ethical benefits of manufacturing furniture in Britain
With the British public becoming more ethically and environmentally conscious, many consumers are choosing to buy British as often as they can. As a result, many furniture retailers are stocking more products made by UK manufacturers to keep up with demand. Not only can it lead to increased profits, but UK manufacturing is socially responsible and good for the planet. Below, I’ll be outlining just some of the benefits of manufacturing your furniture right here in Britain. Reducing the use of fossil fuels Fossil fuels that are used in the transportation of materials and goods are significant contributors to greenhouse gases and global warming. If you manufacture goods or buy materials from overseas, ships, planes and trucks will all be needed to get your items to you. Manufacturing and buying materials locally means these items don’t have to travel very far, and the distance you’ll need to deliver your furniture to the customer will be a lot shorter too, reducing your carbon footprint and helping to save the environment. Sourcing sustainable materials Buying materials locally also gives you the
FP312_Pages.indd 18
opportunity to find more sustainable and ethical sources. Here in the UK, most handmade items are produced to meet the high standards that our industry demands. And, while this may create more hoops to jump through for furniture makers, it does mean that consumers can purchase a piece that they know has been held up to more scrutiny than other parts of the world known for cut-price production. A prime example of this can be found in the FSC-certified timber that most quality British furniture makers will use, including ourselves here at Timeless Chesterfields. This certification guarantees that the wood is sourced responsibly from sustainable forests, giving customers peace of mind that they are being less impactful with their purchasing decision. Supporting the British economy and furniture trade Buying your materials from British sources, rather than trading with companies overseas, means you’re helping to support local businesses and provide jobs for those in the area. Then, when people buy from you, they’re helping to support your company and livelihood. It’s a constant cycle of putting money back into the UK economy to protect the future of the
27/09/2019 12:21
19 country’s businesses and jobs — especially after the Brexit deadline. As well as the economical benefit of buying from the UK, this decision also supports the British furniture industry by keeping quality craftsmanship alive. While money is important, without the demand for our furniture, the traditional skills and manufacturing base we have in this country will decline. So, whether you’re in the supply chain or a consumer, deciding to make exclusively British buying decisions means that you are doing your bit to support a trade that is hundreds of years old and ensure that it can thrive. Making quality pieces built to last To satisfy the demand for stylish pieces at lower prices, a lot of furniture is made overseas in factories that could be operating under working conditions that are less regulated and to a lower standard than in the UK. This cheap, low-quality furniture is also a large contributor to landfill waste as it breaks easily and has to be replaced more often. Last year, around 22 million items of furniture were sent to UK landfill sites, according to recent research from the North London Waste Authority (Wise Up To Waste). Plus, the cheap materials they’re made from also risk leaking pollutants back into the environment as they break down, so they continue to have an impact even after they’re thrown away.
On the other hand, the UK has a culture of quality that’s known around the world. Our stricter manufacturing regulations mean that British furniture is more likely to be made from high-quality materials using techniques that deliver durable pieces. As a result, British-made furniture is designed to last, rather than as a disposable item to be replaced. Plus, we have a reputation for fair working conditions, so you can be sure pieces made in the UK are produced ethically. And, because buying British means that consumers will likely be in close proximity to the manufacturer, it means that they can return for repairs further down the line. Not only does this provide an additional revenue stream (provided the service is offered), but it makes it much more convenient for repairs to be made for the consumer. This means pieces are much less likely to be disposed of, where they would contribute to landfill. Offering repairs locally also means that consumers don’t need to ship their furniture long distances, contributing to a larger carbon footprint. These are just some of the environmental and ethical benefits of manufacturing your furniture right here in the UK. Sourcing responsible materials, reducing your carbon footprint and making high quality pieces can all help to reduce our impact on the environment and can help the British economy, too.

The family-run Florian business has grown strategically over 45 years to become one of the most capable timber resources in Europe

21 As one of the UK’s most distinguished timber and timber products resources, James Latham needs little introduction, but what of its suppliers? Editor John Legg travelled to Italy and then Croatia alongside the company’s timber sales development managers, Justin Hayward and James White, to better understand the character and capability of its key timber supplier, Florian.
James Latham and Florian – the perfect fit Although an Italian business, the growth and development of Florian is based in Croatia. Politically, Croatia’s history is more complicated than most – with marauding armies and changing empire rule, being broken up and put back together in differing forms, echoes of the past still resonate in this part of the world. But from a forestry point of view, the value of its natural resource has long been understood. Croatia has a proud 250-year tradition of organised forestry. According to state-owned Hrvatkse Sume (Croatian Forests), almost half the land is covered by forest, and of that 2.7m hectares, 2.1m is state-owned and 581,000 is privately-owned. In 2002, Croatian Forests was awarded FSC certification. Hrvatkse Sume’s annual allowable cut for
commercial purposes averages at 5,800,000m3, and for timber businesses that encourage more upstream processing in Croatia – rather than plain lumber exports – the greater the access to the raw material becomes. Federico Florian began in 1950 as a small woodworking concern and he steadily developed his business until 1974 when Florian Legno was established at Riese Pio X in Italy. Federico’s son, Elvio is now the long-standing president and CEO of the business. Along with a family team, Florian has become one of the most capable and powerful timber processors in Europe. Florian today is a substantial business and one of James Latham’s key suppliers. And amongst almost 3000 customers, James Latham is Florian’s single largest customer.
Twenty years after Riese Pio X was set up, the company established Elda Drvo Doo, in Zagrabia, Croatia to co-ordinate the local timber supply and to manage the sawmill manufacturing, ensuring a local presence. In 1998, Magyarplan was set up in Hungary to make solid wood panel and laminated profiles. Two years later, Iskralegno was set up in Monfalcone, Italy to focus on beech for use in the furniture and construction markets. French and Czech sales offices then followed in 2011, and a year later a flooring and cladding production site, Flo.it, was set up in Riese Pio X. A transport management facility was also opened in 2011 in Barcs, Hungary. In 2012, another Croatian mill was acquired, one which it was decided would become a blueprint for Florian’s modernisation programme. Lipovljani Lignum Doo Flo.it, Vazzola, Italy has been subjected to considerable investment and reorganisation by Elvio and the team to become a
highly-efficient mill with world-class goods inward stockyard, primary processing, kiln drying, secondary manufacturing, further processing and finishing techniques – all boosting its capability, capacity and commercial value. Elvio says the Lipovljani site is the benchmark standard Florian is rolling out – in different ways for different mills – to all his manufacturing and processing plants over the coming years. Interestingly, with Florian’s increased focus on increasing upstream processing to provide more value-added product in the country of origin, Elvio has been able to secure greater access to the raw material, courtesy of the decisionmakers who grant the permits to access the forests’ resource. Florian’s calm authority has been built on steady, organic growth allied to a drive to expand whilst always focusing on delivering a quality product to its customers. Today the emphasis is still on selected European wood of the finest quality, primarily oak, beech, ash and walnut.

27/09/2019 14:18
22 PROFILE The company currently enjoys a 310,000m3 timber supply and makes over 10,000 customer deliveries per annum. The company’s main output is sawn and finished timber, an increasing offer of semi-finished products for furniture and joinery applications. Florian also has an impressive range of flooring and it also manufactures several ranges of finished furniture items to certain markets, including hotel and office furniture. To deliver a consistent quality timber product offer, Florian has an impressive overall drying capacity of 19,000m3 with over 120 dryers, some mills having energy capture systems. At its Iskralegno plant in Italy, the company has invested over €11m in recent years to expand the property by 20,000m2, quadrupling the number of drying cells including dryers and evaporators – all capped off by an impressive co-generation plant to deliver hot water and electrical power. Thankfully for UK manufacturers, James Latham has unfettered access to Florian’s impressive resource. Currently that offer primarily extends to oak, walnut and beech, all of which is available from stock in the UK and Ireland through its 12-strong network of distribution depots. Latham’s has access to Florian’s lime and poplar too. The positive relationship between the two firms extends to regular training and insight programmes at Florian’s mills for members of James Latham‘s timber academy as part of their commitment to improving knowledge of its products and supply chain.

Having spent time in the company of Florian and James Latham personnel on this trip, visiting four different facilities ranging from the business-like to the world-class, it is clear to see that Elvio and the family team has executed an impressive master-plan to become a European timber powerhouse – achieved with guile, entrepreneurial insight and a no doubt a tremendous amount of hard work and a bit of luck here and there.
And as supply chain partners go, with Florian’s resourceful production capability allied to James Latham’s market intelligence and highlyeffective distribution model, this partnership is very much a symbiotic relationship founded on integrity and strong family ideals: Florian and James Latham – a confidence-inspring partnership. www.lathamtimber.co.uk www.florianinc.com

Don’t come unstuck – stick with Rakoll
Once bonded with Rakoll ECO 3, product stays bonded, says Kenyon Group
A D3 PVAc–polymerised adhesive, manufactured in Dukinfield, Cheshire, HB Fuller’s Rakoll ECO 3 is widely respected in the marketplace, with a proven track record in delivering results from assembly to hot/cold pressing across woodworking sectors. What separates Rakoll ECO 3 from other products available in the market? James Hamilton, sales manager at distributor Kenyon Group, explains: “Polymerising and manufacturing this adhesive in the UK is a huge and unique advantage in the PVAc D3 market. “We see many competitor products on the market that are simply imported in bulk and then repacked with a new badge/label. With Rakoll ECO 3 we have total control and transparency of the product at all stages, right from its manufacture in Dukinfield up to delivery. This is why we can so proudly shout about buying British! “Rakoll ECO 3 is a British-made product which we hold across three UK warehouses, meaning that our customers have no lead times – we deliver the goods when they need the goods. There’s nothing worse than a failed delivery – it stops production and costs money. With Kenyon’s, our customers tell us when they want delivery and we will deliver the goods! We also pride ourselves in putting in the time and effort to ensure we help our customers achieve the best solution, whatever that may be! “Delivery is important – very important – but you have to back it up with a quality adhesive product at the right price, offer technical support/advice and solve adhesive problems. There’s little point in receiving the delivery
FP312_Pages.indd 28
on time if the adhesive doesn’t do what you require it to do! “Offering technical on-site support, training and advice is a win-win. We like to make sure everything is running smoothly and efficiently with Rakoll ECO 3 adhesive – from providing advice on storage during the colder months to reducing coat weight, making the finished product a little bit more competitive. The main feedback from customers using Rakoll ECO 3 is the product’s ability to spread smoothly and evenly via roller coaters or hand rollers, plus deliver exceptional bond strength. “In the current market we are seeing more and more that the delivered price doesn’t appear to be the dominant deal-breaker. The importance has switched to the ability to deliver the right product at the right time without any possible delays at borders or asking the customer to stockpile, plus at the same time supporting British manufacturing. “On-time delivery, made in Britain, normally now outweighs a few pence a kilo in savings over an imported grade – it’s a proven fact, just ask any customer whose production line has been halted due to a failed delivery or product not fit for purpose. “The name Kenyon has been synonymous with adhesives since 1979, yet we glide under the radar of the multinational competitors by delivering an impeccable service to the end

user. We are a family company, with strong family values, celebrating 40 years in the adhesive world. From our base in Oldham, Lancashire, we supply UK woodworking, furniture, caravan, insulation, mattress, window and door manufacturers with a range of high-quality adhesives. “We like to solve adhesive problems and we have solved many ‘sticky’ problems! Nuts to problems with castors, says Jet Press Here is the problem. Sofas and other furniture is sent out to customers with the castors, legs or feet separate – it makes sense, because delivery is easier and there is less risk of damage in transit. But it is very easy to make a mistake screwing a leg into a T-Nut. If the customer does not get it quite right, then the sofa can break when they sit on it and the T-Nut is forced out. This leaves the supplier with unhappy customers, plus the cost of repairing or replacing the furniture. Rivet T-Nuts are almost impossible to push out, states distributor Jet Press. They also offer a lead-in so they are less likely to be crossthreaded. Throughout the furniture industry, they are being used for legs, feet and castors, as well as headboards and for joining divan bases. The team at Jet Press has built up a great deal of experience, working with furniture manufacturers to select the right T-Nut and insertion machine to deliver the best result. The company can also recommend the best combination of barrel length, flair pin and pressure for optimum results. Demos and trials are all part of the service.

Jet Press supplies a range of T-Nut insertion machines, starting with tabletop machines that can achieve up to 1000 insertions an hour through to drill, drive and rivet machines for highvolume, high-accuracy applications. Delivery in the UK is free, along with training and full technical support. Jet Press will maintain the machine annually as long as the client only uses Sigma T-Nuts. Jet Press holds large stocks of a wide range of sizes of T-Nut, so can arrange deliveries to meet clients’ production needs. 01623 551800 www.jetpress.com

The founding partners, Henry Goodwin, Robert Scarfone and Alessandro Belgiorno-Nettis, established the studio as a vessel to explore and create a built environment that feeds off their passion for machines and movement.
Its Two Fold product is ideal for a range of applications including hospitality and leisure, education, office, the property rental market and multi-residential living. In a restaurant for instance, Two Fold allows for venues to transform from a seated, table-service space to a standing bar-like area. Two Fold overcomes the awkwardness of other folding chair and folding table assemblies by utilising a neat, single counter-balanced movement. Initial feedback in Australia has been positive from a number of designers as well as on social

media locally. This prompted the Sydney business to submit an Australian Patent Application. “Now that the furniture is Patent Pending, we are looking to partner with a manufacturer who is interested in further developing Two Fold for use in education, multi-residential living and other areas of design and construction,” explains Alessandro. The company’s website features clear images of the product’s attributes and a GIF video showing its clever transformational quality. 0061 0481 348568 www.gsbnstudio.com.au

Live in harmony with Alby Blue
Kronodesign introduces Alby Blue, one of the key new colours from Kronodesign. The company’s trend forecasters state that this is a shade that is going to be seen in all the right places for years to come … A sophisticated variation on contemporary grey tones with a touch more individuality, Alby Blue is versatile, too, as a complementary colour which excels in bringing out the true nature of character woodgrains and the subtle varieties of stone finishes – and as a contrast colour it is a bold counterpoint that can effortlessly handle extremes of pattern or texture.
FP312_Pages.indd 36
Alby Blue is one of a fresh palette of shades inspired by the New Nordic look – simplistic and functional, with a feel for nature and the colourwashed effects of the Scandinavian light. Within the palette, carefully chosen hues combine with natural and weathered woodgrains, or can be mixed and matched for a gentle muted look or a modern contrast with a hint of Scandi Noir. Alby Blue is available with either a BS texture – a pleasing mottled appearance that creates a diffused sheen – or in the Grained Color (GC) finish, a realistic textural woodgrain surface that has the look and feel of painted wood. Kronospan’s high-quality boards are manufactured in the UK and use only sustainably-managed or recycled timber. They are environmentally friendly and extend the lifecycle of wood. Kronospan has also created an app to help users experiment with looks and moods. The company says it is an essential tool for planners, specifiers and interior designers, and allows them to select and try out ideas and options digitally. The app is customisable, and also gives access to Kronospan’s new image gallery and moodboards. Pre-assembled Hettich drawers from Ney Ney is now the official manufacturer and distributor of Hettich pre-assembled drawers for the UK and Northern Ireland. The Coventry distribution business now stocks the InnoTech Atira drawer in Silver and the ArciTech drawer in an Anthracite finish. Manufacturing a drawer box can actually be more hassle and time-consuming than people think, and often the indirect costs are not always considered. It may be more beneficial to buy a pre-assembled Hettich drawer box that is ready to fit straight into a cabinet than buying component form and putting a drawer together oneself. For those who do not manufacture themselves, but are buying kitchens from various different suppliers, buying pre-assembled drawers from a specialist drawer manufacturer is a more cost-effective option than buying drawers with cabinets. Usually, cabinets can be purchased pre-drilled to suit the drawers being used so fitting the drawers can be relatively easy and quick. Make a connection with Lamello’s new Cabineo
Swiss fixings specialist Lamello has launched its Cabineo 8 M6. Now available in the UK from Lamello distributors, the new connector can be used to join hard materials like aluminium, steel and HPL. Available in a black or white finish, the new Cabineo 8 M6 boasts the same impressive credentials as the existing Cabineo family. The one-piece connector is quick and easy to install into a drilled or routed shape and requires no edge drilling, making it suitable for use on simple three-axis and nesting machines. It also requires no dowel holes, which means less drill holes per connector and a high clamping force so the user can wave goodbye to long curing times, the pre-installation of screws and dowels and wobbly joints. Where this new fitting does differ from its predecessors is its impressive wear-free design. Made to withstand vigorous use, it can be connected directly into a range of hard materials that have been pre-drilled to accept the M6 Cabineo. What is more, where the thread hole cannot be cut directly into the substrate, the new fixing can be partnered with a steel insert for an even stronger joint. This is an ideal option for those creating detachable corner and dividing panel joints with a heavy load. Its hardy design also makes the insert an ideal solution for those looking to assemble and reassemble products multiple times without
FP312_Pages.indd 42
compromising on the products’ strength – and, with two insert nuts available to work with 14-16mm- and 17-25mm-thick materials, the new Cabineo 8 M6 brings a wealth of design opportunities to the table. “The Cabineo 8 M6 is a game-changer,” says Shaye Chatfield, Lamello area sales manager. “The original Cabineo has become a firm favourite among furniture designers and manufacturers thanks to its ability to significantly reduce the production, transport and assembly time needed without jeopardising the strength and aesthetics of the design, but they’ve only ever been suitable for panel-onpanel joining. “The new Cabineo 8 M6 has changed this. Now, you can connect hard materials and panel products together quickly and efficiently with only one tool change from a 5mm to 15mm drill. “The design possibilities are endless. I’ve already seen it being used to join metal legs onto wooden tabletops and the results have been fantastic. Plus, with the added reassurance of an insert nut, it offers a discreet, fast and effective solution to join heavy-duty materials without compromise.” s.chatfield@lamello.com www.lamello.com

44 ADVERTORIAL
Extraction Solutions goes back to school Brunel Construction Centre, Huddersfield, part of Kirklees College, specialises in construction-based courses such as plumbing, bricklaying, carpentry and joinery. Kirklees College’s woodwork department inherited an impressive array of industrial machinery from the previous tenants, and has since invested heavily, installing new woodworking equipment including spindle moulders, planers, and a state-of-the-art five-head moulder.
To further improve the facility, Extraction Solutions was invited to survey the workshop, with the intention of replacing its aging extraction unit with a new, energy-efficient, ATEX-compliant installation. The existing system was installed before the ATEX regulations came into law in 2003, and the duct system has since been heavily modified, resulting in low efficiency and reduced dust capture. “After a discussion with Daniel and Peter from Kirklees College, it was clear that only a percentage of the machines would operate at any one time, with students intermittently using machines throughout their projects,” explains ESL’s design engineer, James Parkes. “By correctly sizing the duct system it enables us to use dampers to select between two or more machines, which has the added benefit of reducing the plant size. We coupled the fan with a smart inverter which constantly optimises the fan speed depending on the required duty.”
FP312_Pages.indd 44
During normal operation this could save the college over 7kW per hour, greatly reducing running costs and offering flexibility throughout the system. Extraction Solutions aimed to keep the system as simple as possible to prevent any potential disruption to students’ education, and opted to install a modern NFPZ3000 3HJ filter unit complete with reverse air regeneration fans for cleaning the patented antistatic superbags. This type of filter delivers extracted waste directly into bins, which is then collected by local farmers and equestrians for use as animal bedding. Both filter and fan comply with current ATEX regulations, with the filter utilising explosion relief doors to safely vent any flame or pressure wave. The fan includes both temperature and vibration sensing to reduce any potential risk by shutting down the fan before it reaches the ignition temperature.
27/09/2019 12:21
45 Kirklees College spared no expense in protecting students, opting to include a CARZ isolation backflap, which is an ATEX recommendation always offered by ESL. This device prevents pressure and flame travelling back upstream through the ductwork into the workshop, protecting students and staff in the unlikely event of an explosion in the filter. Integrating the new system into the workshop came with certain challenges. With a ceiling height of only a few metres and 20 machines to connect, the main duct routes needed to be designed without being overbearing or intrusive. “This had to be undertaken carefully as not to create an oppressive appearance in the workshop – we opted to split down main ducts to serve only a few machines each. Our excellent team of installation engineers ensured that ducts were installed as close to the ceiling as possible,” says James. Daniel Bedford, head of estates and facilities for Kirklees College, comments: “Extraction Solutions recently completed the installation of a replacement wood extraction plant at our Brunel Construction Centre in Huddersfield. From start to finish, the project was designed, installed and commissioned seamlessly, to budget and on programme. The system was value for money,
FP312_Pages.indd 45
with the tender being the lowest of the three prices returned. “The design of the new dust extraction plant has created additional space externally, whilst the operating noise levels and energy consumption are significantly lower than the previous dust extraction plant.
“The Extraction Solutions team, both onsite and in the initial stages of the project, were professional and informative. I would recommend Extraction Solutions for similar projects.” 01909 772969 info@extraction-solutions.co.uk

Intrinsic Works invests in Dustraction When it comes to the furniture manufacturing industry, investing in the right equipment is crucial for any start-up business – the choice of machinery, extraction system or software can determine whether a new business will sink or swim. For high-end bedroom and office furniture manufacturer, Intrinsic Works, an ambitious business model and sound investment plan led it to the door of extraction specialist, Dustraction, and the consequent installation of a new woodwaste extraction system earlier this year.
“No business can afford to start production on the back foot,” begins Steve North, MD of Intrinsic Works. “Starting a new business is risky and we’ve invested heavily in it, but for us, it was essential to build our company on solid foundations in order for it to achieve its full potential.” The investment for Intrinsic Works included a purpose-built 6000ft2 factory and over £500,000 of new, top-of-the-range Homag machinery. “When it came to commissioning a dust extraction company, we needed to be confident that they could supply us with a system that would work seamlessly with our machines and withstand future growth,” continues Steve. “I toyed with a number of extraction companies, but my decision to work with Dustraction was confirmed after receiving positive feedback from door manufacturer, East Coast Fittings. They had used them before and were really pleased with the results. A meeting with the Dustraction team sealed the deal for me, and shortly after our first meeting they presented a few different design options with different price points for me to consider.” It was agreed that a Dustrax No 27 RV woodwaste filter was the ideal option for the new manufacturing plant. Utilising a tubular sock type filtering system fitted with an automatic shaker cleaning mechanism that removes surplus dust from the filter sleeves on plant shutdown, the bespoke system was built to work with five machines on the factory floor – a nesting cell, edgebander, panel saw and
FP312_Pages.indd 46
two slotters – each with their own air volume requirements. The steel design, which offers a filtration velocity of approximately 1.8m/min, can also be easily modified if new machines are introduced to the factory floor. Steve explains: “An extraction system that offered longevity and flexibility was important to us. We are predicting a turnover of over £1m within 12 months and we are confident this will rise to £1.2m within 24 months. “Everything has been designed with expansion in mind, and this extraction system is no exception. The filter housing is slightly over-sized to allow for growth in the short term, whilst a second heavy-duty fan, specifically designed for handling woodwaste, can be incorporated at a later date, with the same low-level noise impact, when we outgrow the original design.” The woodwaste filter’s components were built off-site and transported to the site to coincide with the delivery of machinery. “A site visit before the work began gave the team an opportunity to dot the i’s and cross the t’s,” says Steve. “ It was clear the team knew exactly what they were doing, and they kept me in the loop throughout the process. They talked me through the different installation stages so I could see the progress for myself, and the system came fully COSHH tested. It was great to work with a company that simply got on with the job. I had every confidence in their abilities, and I would recommend them to any business looking for a new extraction solution.”
F C N
With the extraction system now complete, Intrinsic Works is one step closer to opening for business. Steve adds: “We’re now in a position to start testing our production facilities. It’s the very last step before we start working on our first contracts. We need to make sure we’re 100% happy with every aspect of our production cycle, but so far, so good. We’re excited to see what the future will hold.” 0116 271 3212 www.dustraction.co.uk

Cutlist puts its trust in Homag UK for new spraying solution When Oxfordshire-based group, Cutlist and Langstaff-Ellis, was looking to invest in an automated spray solution for its businesses, one of the companies it turned to was Homag UK. Cutlist wanted a reliable, high quality automated spraying machine to offer its customers additional services, whilst Langstaff-Ellis was looking to gain control over previously outsourced spray finishing. “Cutlist was founded in 2014 to meet a demand for panel processing,” explains Alex Langstaff-Ellis, joint owner of the business. He continues: “My business partner Edward Birks and I set up Langstaff-Ellis Ltd as a bespoke cabinetmaker in 2009. Fast-forward ten years and we’ve had multiple workshop moves driven by rapid growth to the point where we are now. “At Langstaff-Ellis, we serve a lot of high-end private individuals, but also some developers and commercial clients too. About five years ago we set up Cutlist as a panel processing supplier. This business cuts panels to size, edgebands them and sends them out as a kit for trade-based clients, including carpenters, joiners and cabinetmakers. “Cutlist has experienced rapid growth too and
FP312_Pages.indd 48
it became clear that a spray machine would be advantageous to both companies.” The need for an automated spraying solution “The reason we considered an in-house spray solution was to gain control of our entire manufacturing process at Langstaff-Ellis. At that time, we were spending a lot of money on a third-party, traditional, hand-spray service. “Not only was it expensive, but also it was difficult getting the parts to and from the supplier without damage occurring. In addition, it was very time-consuming; we were reliant on his capacity and his ability to get things done to our timeframes. So we just weren’t in control of the process in the way we wanted to be.
“The volume of business we were putting out meant that investing in our own spray solution started to look a more effective solution. In addition to this, we recognised that there was a significant demand for Cutlist customers to have access to a primer and lacquer service for finished boards. “Our competitors weren’t offering that service with an automated machine so it made sense for us to fill the gap. For Cutlist, it’s now a unique selling point over the competition and it gives us the control we were looking for, not to mention a new profit centre for the business. “We didn’t want to go down the hand-spray route because as a company, we are focused on automating as many of our processes as we can. Automation gives us consistency, reliability and ultimately, improved profit margins.”
27/09/2019 14:00
49 The decision to buy from Homag “When it came to investing in the spray machine we looked to see what the market had to offer. We’d previously invested in a Homag beam saw and CNC machine, both of which have given us tremendous confidence in them as a company. Despite this, we weren’t just going to roll over and pick Homag as the solution. “From our point of view it was vitally important that we carried out due diligence to ensure we chose the right long-term solution for our business. With this in mind we singled out Homag and one other potential supplier. We then supplied some test sample panels to both companies and visited each, scrutinising the outcomes to see which delivered the best results for us. “There wasn’t a big difference between the performances of the two machines. Where Homag did score, however, was their open and honest approach to the sales process. In addition, there were some aspects of the other party’s offer that we didn’t warm to, so that automatically swayed our decision towards Homag’s favour. “With Homag, we just had every confidence that they would deliver and support us for the years ahead. Whereas with the other company, we felt the future service support may not be as good. Specifying the right machine “As we were completely new to spraying, we had to put our confidence in Homag to work with us to specify the right machine for our business. Paul Mosley, the Homag area sales manager, was a great support throughout the purchasing process and all the advice that Homag gave us turned out to be spot on. “The throughput of the Sprayteq is superb. It’s a conveyor-fed machine so you can process high volumes of product very quickly, all with
the same high quality finish. The continuity is excellent; you just can’t get that level of consistency with hand spraying. “Another advantage is that although we were effectively novices at the spray game, the machine allowed us to learn how to program and set it up without having ten years of tradesman’s experience behind us. With a modicum of basic training, anyone can operate the machine and get identical quality results. “In addition, because the panels are running through the machine on a conveyor you don’t get any over-spraying on the underside of the panels. For traditional hand sprayers, this is a major issue; they would have to mask up the back of the panel before they sprayed the top side. “With our machine, we don’t have to do that because every panel is laid flat on a paper conveyor so the spray just doesn’t reach the underside. Consequently, not only does it save time, but it also saves paint – we’re told that the Sprayteq S-100 is 20% more efficient than hand spraying.” The Sprayteq S-100 from Homag “The Sprayteq S-100 is owned and operated by Cutlist. Once the panels have been cut and edged, they are sent to the spray machine for a coat of primer or lacquer. At this stage, we haven’t offered a colour top-coat service to our clients, but that is definitely something that we might add in future. “This facility is proving to be very popular with Cutlist customers; on top of this, however, Cutlist also serves our Langstaff-Ellis bespoke kitchens and furniture business. Here we do the whole package including top-coat colours and finish work. “With Langstaff-Ellis, we design kitchens and furniture using Cabinet Vision and, of course, the Homag machines ‘talk’ to Cabinet Vision very effectively. So the designs are sent through the
computer system to the Homag HPP 300 beam saw where the panels are cut and then a label is printed out for each panel with a barcode and product details for ongoing edgebanding and CNC processing. “Our goal was to achieve as much automation as possible and we’ve made sure that, no matter how people order, whether through Cutlist or Langstaff-Ellis, the system works for both feeds of work.” A new partnership for Homag “One slight concern we had about going forward with Homag was we were fully aware that this was a new partnership triad between Homag, Makor and the Durr Group who supply all the pumps and guns. “Looking back, we needn’t have worried; everything was very open and transparent which really impressed me. The energy and positivity everyone has put into the deal has been great, we can’t fault it. “Operationally, the machine is both straight forward and intuitive. Our operator is from the automotive industry with no real woodworking experience, but within a month he was able to completely get to grips with the Sprayteq. He can trouble-shoot and make adjustments to solve any issue pretty much straight away. It is also very easy to clean and maintain which is another significant bonus. “Usually, when you buy a new piece of equipment, there is always something that the salesman tells you it will do, but in reality it won’t; I have to say, however, the Sprayteq has delivered everything Homag promised – it is a superb piece of kit which has added a whole new dimension to both our businesses,” concludes Alex Langstaff-Ellis. For a demonstration or more information about Homag Sprayteq solutions, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

Kudos to Daltons Wadkin for providing crosscutting solution Kudos started out 20 years ago under the name Advanced Timbercraft. Over the years, the Northern Ireland firm realised its position in the market for expertly producing smart timber frame homes, focusing on energy efficiency and atmospherically-controlled dwellings. The rebrand in 2016 to the name Kudos allowed the company to grow and find new opportunities. Encouraging people to take a fresh look at timber frame, and a fresh look at its brand, Kudos prides itself on using the finest timber frame technologies to create bespoke, high performance and low energy properties. As one may expect, Kudos being at the forefront of sustainability and growth, already owned some automated machinery. Kudos’ Andrew Eves told us: “We already had an automatic crosscut, for almost 18 years, so it was a case of upgrading. We knew we needed it.” Andrew explained that the company was able to receive funding, in the form of a grant for diversified farmland. This encouraged the team to look further afield for its crosscutting solutions and explore the market in more depth. Kudos didn’t hesitate to get in touch with Daltons Wadkin sales director, Andy Walsh, about Salvador automatic crosscutting solutions. After speaking with Andy, Andrew said: “We were very impressed from the first phone call that Andy wanted to come and visit our workshop. The customer service was exceptional.” Following the visit, Andy Walsh explains that: “Meeting face-to-face with the customer is vital to identify their production needs. The Salvador
FP312_Pages.indd 50
SuperAngle S600 was an obvious choice to provide accuracy and performance for the timber frame business, and also the capacity and orientation to minimise disruption to their factory layout – offering a left to right feed version.” Compared to traditional crosscutting methods a Salvador SuperPush 600 can increase yield by 15% or more, reduce labour by over 50%, reduce operator skill levels and increase productivity while providing a 100% safe working operation. However, for a company such as Kudos which already owned an automatic crosscut, how would the Salvador compare to what it previously used? Andrew Eves explains: “With the old automatic crosscut a designer did the cutting list optimisation on their own PC first, the Salvador S600 automatically optimises on the machine which saves about four hours per job, and it saves waste.” He also noted that the speed and accuracy of the S600 were also among the key benefits. Another reason for choosing the Salvador SuperAngle S600 was the ability to minimise waste, which would reduce impact on the environment as well as reduce cost Last year saw the third highest percentage rise in UK
timber prices in the last 35 years, with costs increasing by 46.2%. Whilst timber prices are known to fluctuate, being able to make the most out of the timber one has is a top priority for the industry. The Salvador S600 automatically calculates the cuts on any size timber loaded, making the most of each piece of timber. Andrew Eves was very impressed with the Daltons Wadkin engineer’s level of knowledge, and how keen he was to answer any questions. He comments: “At one point we were talking about cutting rafters, and within minutes Sam was demonstrating how to do it.” When asked if Andrew would recommend Daltons Wadkin for Salvador crosscuts, he said: “In terms of customer service we were very happy. Daltons Wadkin are just on the other end of the phone and any software problems can be accessed by Daltons Wadkin engineers remotely. The Salvador saw is robust, it’s clearly designed for prolonged use. We would recommend it.” For more information on the Salvador range of automatic crosscutting solutions contact Daltons Wadkin. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

Gallito fits out finishing studio Gallito has recently installed a bespoke paint spraying and drying facility for The Finishing Studio in Thame, Oxfordshire – a recent new venture established by furniture designer and manufacturer Duncan Doig. Oxfordshire-based Doig Furniture manufactures bespoke cabinetry and luxury fitted and freestanding furniture for the highend residential market. With an experienced team of designers and cabinet-makers, the company produces beautifully crafted furniture, employing the skills of traditional craftsmanship in tandem with the best that CAD technology can offer. As well as individual commissions for private clients, Doig Furniture works collaboratively with architects and interior designers and, over the last 15 years, has undertaken a wide variety of bespoke projects ranging from residential kitchens for palatial homes across Oxfordshire and the surrounding home counties, to a walnut reception desk destined to cut a dash on Savile Row, and from arts and crafts restoration work to cabinetry for a luxury yacht. Before the company made the decision to invest in an in-house department, all finishing work was being sourced from outside suppliers and, as Duncan explains: “Because all the furniture we manufacture is bespoke, our requirements for spray finishing are as diverse as the designs we create, and the nature of our
FP312_Pages.indd 52
work means they are almost always short-run projects, which tends to make all aspects of subcontracting a costly exercise.” Goods would also have to be packed for dispatch to outside suppliers, re-packed for return to the factory, then checked and packed again before delivery to the client – the multiple handling involved was time consuming and also very costly when an item sustained damage in the process. “We finally made the decision to bring all our finishing work in-house”, says Duncan “but, to ensure the new facility would be kept busy, and financially self-supporting, we established The Finishing Studio, a facility that was designed to meet all the demands Doig Furniture could throw at it, but also able to accommodate specialist finishing work for other manufacturers.”
Having previously had dealings with Gallito’s sister company, DCS, for dust extraction requirements in the factory, Duncan was already aware of the capabilities the company could offer and invited Gallito’s sales manager, Mike Lodge, to review the location earmarked for the new facility and to put forward proposals for a cost-effective facility that would meet the company’s specific needs. Gallito, now part of Absolent Group AB, a world leader in the development of process-air cleaning equipment for industrial applications, has, for over 40 years, provided everything from standard spray booths and surface preparation equipment, through to paint finishing systems and complete turnkey industrial process packages. “To make best use of the space available,

“Because all the furniture we manufacture is bespoke, our requirements for spray finishing are as diverse as the designs we create” and to meet all the requirements Duncan had asked for, our engineers designed a bespoke facility which would be manufactured to sit neatly within the shell of the existing building,” Mike explains, “and the primary objective was to provide a facility that would be fully capable of undertaking all the finishing work generated by Doig Furniture.” Manufactured from laser-cut mild steel panels, which fit together perfectly to give a smooth internal surface, the dry filter spray room and the drying room each provide a working floor area of 16m2, with 2000 x 2000mm doorways, and an internal ceiling height of 2250mm throughout. An array of eight equally-spaced, flush-fitting, twin fluorescent units gives an excellent all-round work light, and the double-skinned, fully-glazed doors allow easy access and good visibility. The spray room is fitted with 8m2 of replaceable filter media through which a belt-driven centrifugal fan, powered by a 4.0kW motor, has the capacity to extract over 16,000m3 of contaminated air per hour. The adjacent heated drying room is of similar mild steel panel construction, but is designed for operation at temperatures up to 40°C, with heat provided by a fan-assisted 56kW gas burner unit. Externally, the roof is covered with a 50mm layer of mineral wool insulation, faced with aluminum foil, and the roof construction also

forms an explosion relief area so that, in the unlikely event of an explosion, the effects will be vented vertically to prevent injury to personnel. The burner is located above the drying room and warmed air is recirculated four times a minute by a 5.5kW centrifugal fan. The heating system includes various safety features, including a purge timer and cool down timer, over-temperature
thermostat and airflow pressure switch to monitor recirculated airflow and bleed fan airflow – 10% of the recirculated air is exhausted to atmosphere to prevent any accumulation of solvent fumes. “We are delighted with the new facility,” says Duncan. “The quality of the construction is excellent and Gallito’s installation team delivered a professional service. We are now up and running and fulfilling the finishing requirements of our furniture design business – our next step is to offer the service to other local manufacturers who need a bespoke finishing service.” 01937 844698 www.gallito.co.uk

Ferwood’s speedy solution When faced with a broken-down CNC machine, the options very quickly narrow down. You can’t afford to halt your production line, so do you take a gamble with your quality and outsource your work, or do you revert to manufacturing by hand while you wait for a spare part to arrive? Either way, it’s going to cost you – but, for established fabricator, Seamless Solid Surfaces, the first port of call was reconditioned machinery specialist, Ferwood UK – and within four days, a Ferwood Functional CNC was sourced, financed and installed …
“We’d just found out that our old CNC machine had an electrical fault and the spare part was going to take up to three weeks to arrive,” begins Gary Wade, MD of Seamless Solid Surfaces. “We couldn’t afford to be without a CNC for three weeks. It would have cost us up to £2000 for every week the machine was out of action.” The Wakefield-based business needed to find a solution, and quickly. “The engineer that came out to try and repair the CNC suggested that Ferwood might be able to find me a replacement machine quickly. They talked me through a suitable machine on the Tuesday, I saw the CNC in action on the Wednesday, and it was delivered and fully installed on the Friday. All I had to do was make room for the machine in the workshop and supply some wires. It was unbelievable. I’d never experienced anything like it.” The CNC needed to work effectively on acrylic and solid surfaces such as Corian, Staron, TriStone and Hi-Macs and work seamlessly with an existing template laser. It would also need to work quickly and effectively on commercial batch orders and a growing number of domestic worktops each week. The four-axis, 12-tool SCM Record 100 AL ticked all the boxes, and after being function-tested by a Ferwood specialist, it was ready to be installed. Once installed, an engineer spent three days training the team on the machine’s features. “Training was a must for us,” explains Gary. “I needed my team to hit the ground running and there was a lot of kit on this machine that we hadn’t used before. “We predominantly use a 12mm cutter on our most popular materials, but the level of training we received gave us a greater insight into the machine’s capabilities, the jobs we could complete and the speed it performed at. A job that would have taken us 30 minutes can now take us just five minutes.” It has also allowed the fabricators to approach jobs differently. Gary explains: “We’re now cutting plywood kitchens that, in the past, we would
FP312_Pages.indd 54
have cut on a saw. The CNC lets us pre-drill holes for dominos and shelf pegs, massively speeding up the process and limiting the chance of mistakes being made. We’ve also recently made a curved jig on the CNC which will be used as a mould. Previously, we would have had to do this by hand, which would have caused a lot of material to be wasted.” On top of that, it has made the company’s production more efficient. “We can now supply our fabricators with everything in kit form,” says Gary. “They no longer have to look at a drawing and mark everything out. It reduces errors and makes each job quicker. I can now get an extra half job a week out of each member of the team – that’s a huge return for the company, and has made the new CNC a worthy purchase.” In fact, it has made such an impact on the business that Gary is now looking at buying
another CNC machine. “This CNC was a big investment for us, but we are now reaping the rewards,” he states. “A second CNC could well be on the cards soon. I will certainly be contacting Ferwood when I’m in a position to buy another. “I thought Ferwood were brilliant, and they reacted so quickly. The whole process has been crazy. I would never have thought it possible to see a machine demonstration, organise finance, arrange transport and install a machine in the same week. “Knowing that they can also offer fully refurbished machines is also a huge plus point and, with an experienced team behind them, I wouldn’t think twice about using them again. I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the whole experience.” 0113 286 6689 www.ferwoodgroup.com

Origin is a leading UK designer and manufacturer of bespoke aluminium bi-folding, sliding and residential doors and windows. With manufacturing facilities in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, Origin sells through partners with showrooms nationwide. The company’s continuous growth and diversification since it was founded in 2001 has necessitated an ongoing need for more warehouse capacity – and along with this, the requirement for more efficient handling and storage procedures … Origin’s latest acquisition in one of the warehouses which holds material ready to go to production is a Combi-STE, a multidirectional, stand-on narrow aisle forklift from Irish manufacturer Combilift, which has greatly improved the storage of incoming aluminium extrusions compared to previous methods. Together with newly installed cantilever racking, an increase in overall storage capacity of around +30% has been achieved. Other multidirectional Combilift models, chosen for their versatility and manoeuvrability, have been hard at work at Origin for a number of years now – two 3t capacity C3000 trucks offload deliveries outside, and a 2.5t Combi-CB compact counterbalance design truck is used to
FP312_Pages.indd 56
pick stillages of materials and take them to the manufacturing facilities. “Before we had the STE and the racking, we were stacking boxes of profiles on top of each other, up to six high, which meant we were constantly having to move them around to find the ones we needed,” says Origin’s supply chain director, Oliver Ginger. “As well as not making the most of our available space, this was obviously time consuming as it entailed a lot of lifting and manoeuvring with the forklifts.” Enhanced safety was a further issue, and Oliver and his team worked closely on the project with Combilift and racking supplier Wickens to identify the best forklift model, racking type and overall layout for the job. With the new system in place, once the
offloaded packs have been deposited at the entrance of the warehouse with the C3000, the STE takes over to put them in the racking. “It was quite a long job to make sure we had everything 100% right in the planning stage,” says Oliver, “but as we deliver around 3500 profiles a week to production, streamlined handling and storage is a vital element of our business. We are now in a position to keep up with the demanding schedules.” Aisle widths between the bays are just 2.3m, and guide rollers fitted to the electric-powered STE enable it to travel smoothly and quickly down the guided aisles with no risk of product damage. The depth of the racking arms was set at 1400mm, and the platform of the STE was also customised to this size in accordance with

the requirement to store two packs on each arm for maximum storage density. This has enabled 264 boxes to be accommodated in the eight lines of racking. The truck’s 3t capacity copes easily with lifting the heaviest 900kg packs two at a time to the top racking height of 5.5m. Further features include blue spot safety lighting and a camera which assists operators when they are placing or picking in the top racks. According to Oliver, the operators love the new STE and find it easy to drive. Combilift’s stand-on range was designed
specifically for handling long loads in confined spaces, and as such was the ideal choice for Origin, where products range in length from 5-6.5m. It is a popular choice for companies where a lot of picking is required as it is quicker and more convenient for operators to enter and exit the low level cab compared to ride-on forklifts. An available option in the range is a sit-down cab with a diagonal seat, which offers enhanced driver comfort if long shifts are required, without compromising on aisle widths. www.combilift.com

Kuka Home embarks on digitalisation journey with Lectra
Kuka Home is a trailblazer in the Chinese upholstered furniture industry
To maintain its leading position in China’s fast-growing furniture market, Kuka Home turned to Lectra for digital transformation of its design, development and production processes … Kuka Home’s innovative spirit has made it a trailblazer in the Chinese upholstered furniture industry. To cement its place at the forefront of the industry and manage the impact of rising material and labour costs, the company chose to undergo a digital transformation of its product development and leather-cutting processes. Lectra proposed a smart manufacturing process incorporating DesignConcept, its virtual prototyping and product development solution, and Versalis, its automated leather cutting solution. Lectra also provided its professional services, based on 30 years of expertise, to ensure the success and continuous improvement of Kuka’s production process. Digitalisation allows Kuka to virtually design and develop a significant part of its products, and evaluate prototype feasibility and product quality in the early stages of product development. With an automated leather-cutting process, Kuka achieves consistently high-quality cut pieces without relying on operator skills, optimises leather consumption and boosts efficiency. Founded in 1982 by Gu Yuhua, Kuka Home has become one of the biggest furniture manufacturers and brands in China. The company supplies a wide range of products,
FP312_Pages.indd 60
including leather and fabric sofas, upholstered beds and mattresses to over 2500 branded stores. It also exports its products to over 120 countries and regions. Kuka was one of the first companies in China to pursue the digital transformation of its production processes, replacing its manual processes with innovation-driven product development software and smart cutting technologies. “Digitalisation and automation have become major trends in the upholstered furniture industry. The whole industry is pursuing higher efficiency and process optimisation,” says Tu Jiahui, Kuka’s director of product development. Kuka reached out to Lectra in its pursuit to put digital technology at the heart of its operations. “In the last few years we have been in discussions with many equipment manufacturers and carried out various trials. Lectra was more mature and more aligned with our current business model,” explains Pan Chaoping, lean production and planning management director at Kuka. Implementing digitalised processes also enables Kuka to resolve a challenge experienced by many companies in the industry. “As labour costs have spiralled, we are looking to increase the cost competitiveness of our furniture and
increase manufacturing efficiency,” says Pan. DesignConcept, Lectra’s 3D design and product development solution, allows Kuka to connect product development and production processes, and address any feasibility or quality issues. “With a digital process, we combine product engineering and design phases, followed by evaluation and confirmation. This method has enhanced our development capacity,” says Tu. Modernising its leather-cutting process with Versalis, Lectra’s Industry 4.0-ready leathercutting solution, reduces Kuka’s dependence on operator skills for productivity and product quality. “Adopting digitalised cutting techniques has boosted our manufacturing efficiency. We are now able to handle smaller batches and reduce costs. The resulting products are of a better, consistent quality, in keeping with Kuka’s requirements,” says Pan. In addition to its new solutions, Kuka has benefited from consulting services concerning training, best practices and process optimisation, provided by Lectra’s professional services team. “Kuka Home and Lectra have a strategic relationship. I hope that we can continue our valuable, win-win collaboration,” concludes Tu. www.lectra.com/en/furniture

62 WINDOW NEW PRODUCTS & DOOR PRODUCTION
Speeding the process at Southern Fire Doors Southern Fire Doors & Joinery was set up in 2011 by Tony Ellingworth and his son, Tom. Working from a good-sized unit the company produced door-sets and bespoke joinery using classic machines such as a mortiser, tenoner, vertical spindle, and various hand tools. In 2016 they decided to scale down the factory size and removed the ‘joinery’ element from the business name to concentrate on doorsets. These were produced mostly with hand routers and jigs for the apertures, locks, hinges, handle holes and other ironmongery housings. The company started to look at second-hand CNC machines to see if this could help with production, but they soon turned their attention to a new machine consulting with numerous suppliers, including Masterwood, which demonstrated its basic CAD/CAM software, MasterWorks, showing Southern Fire Doors various doors and frames being fully machined.
An order was duly placed for a Masterwood Project 250, an entry-level machine but fully suitable for the work required and within Tony and Tom’s budget. The machine features a full drilling head, main heavy-duty router, a dual exit direct drive horizontal router and a patented Schmalz vacuum pod and rail bed system. The machine was delivered to the Southern Fire Door’s workshop on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire in August 2018. Masterwood GB provided technicians to set the machine up and provide on-site training for the software and machine, showing how to create parametric programmes for their doors and frames. Tom did most of the training, and said: “At the time it seemed a very daunting task, but with the technicians’ support and help we soon found we could create programmes on our own.” Within five months of the installation Tony said: “We are now looking at jobs with various

companies that we could never have considered pre-CNC. This is a new world for us but Tom has grabbed it with both hands and not only speeded up our doorset production, but has found time to design various products that were sold off before Christmas for charity.” Having called in at their works in January 2019 to see how they were getting on, Masterwood GB director, Dave Kennard, said: “I am impressed with the way Tom has approached the CNC and the results it can give them. “He has looked at ideas and moved forward and in such a short time has produced some very good work” Owner Tony summed it all up when he said: “What used to take us about two hours to produce a door and frame fully worked is now taking 15 minutes, or less.” Southern Fire Doors join a large group of Masterwood customers who specialise in door production using a vast range of machines from entry level CNC like the Project 250 through dedicated machines like the Project Door and DoorLine and up to fully automated production lines. www.masterwood.com www.southernfiredoors.co.uk

66 WINDOW & DOOR PRODUCTION
Door frame processing from JJ Smith In the UK, the traditional construction of timber or MDF door frames has been two legs/jambs with a notched header. Now, with the introduction of high-quality profiled frames that can be PVC-, vinyl-or paper-wrapped, a precision mitre joint has to be used. For ease of assembly either in the factory or on-site, the mitre joint is firmly secured by screws or dowels. JJ Smith offers a range of solutions to these challenges … JJ Smith offers a full range of machines that are able to produce either notched or mitre-type joints, from entry-level manual or automatic notchers and semi-automatic twin-mitre saws with in-built drilling units, right up to fully CNC-controlled machines with automatic loading, unloading and QR code reading. In addition, some also have the option to machine the lock keep, hinge recesses and hinge screw holes. For the combined cutting to length, mitering and drilling operation for mid-size companies there is the Doormaster range of machines, which can be configured to cut one or two frame legs simultaneously, and then the head. The saw units, together with the drilling units, can be moved from 90° to 45° at a flick of a switch. It is then just a case of loading the frame component, then pressing the two-hand safety control, and the cutting/drilling cycle takes place in sequence. The result is a precise mitred joint, with a series of two, three or even four drill holes that allows for either plastic or steel male/female screwed fasteners to be used to secure the joints together. Alternatively, dowels can be used, meaning no drill holes are visible. For setting the required length, the right sawing/drilling shoulder is moved by hand with a scale and pointer to read the position. On request, a digital length readout can be fitted, or the movement is motorised with the ability to program set lengths that are regularly used.
FP312_Pages.indd 66
For higher volume production, or where there is a requirement to carry out additional machining operations for, perhaps, the latch plate or hinge recesses, a CNC jamb would be specified. This machine range can be configured to suit customers’ individual production requirements, with infeed and outfeed loading, and barcode or QR code reading systems. Thanks to the CNC control, set-up times are extremely short, meaning it can be used for both batch and volume runs.
A full-spec machine to carry out all the required frame machining operations could produce, on average, an impressive six pieces per minute. With these dedicated framing machines, coupled with its range of CNC double-sided door machines, JJ Smith feels it is now able to offer customers either individual or complete turnkey solutions tailored to their individual production requirements. 0151 548 9000 www.jjsmith.co.uk

68 SOFTWARE
Cabinet Vision enables kitchen plan creation in just 20 minutes
Chris Sharp Cabinets’ Paul Kettleborough and James Graves
Stage one – designing a 20-unit kitchen for a developer took a matter of minutes with Cabinet Vision. Stage two – the material was ordered at 4.55pm the same day. Stage three – the following day it was cut, drilled, edged, assembled and delivered by 12.30pm. According to Paul Kettleborough, MD and owner of Chris Sharp Cabinets, Alphacam’s Cabinet Vision software has radically streamlined kitchen production in his business, and has created so much more potential … “I did that simply to prove a point,” says Paul Kettleborough. “I wanted to know just how quickly we could produce a kitchen. Although we had to machine multiple panels, our CNC machine was running at up to 80m a minute.” Employing a dozen people at its 15,000ft2 workshop and showroom in Lincolnshire, the company generally produces two kitchens a week for end-users, with a number of others for property developers. Having recently invested in Cabinet Vision software to complement its Alphacam package, the business has capacity for designing and manufacturing around 20 a week. With a long-standing history of making both softwood and hardwood furniture, the company decided it needed to diversify as cheap imports
FP312_Pages.indd 68
began to have an effect on business, and moved into the purely bespoke kitchen market. Three years ago, having worked there for over 20 years, Paul bought the company from Chris Sharp, and decided to concentrate solely on kitchens. Alphacam had been the main software for furniture production there for many years, and the company continued to use it to design and manufacture the cabinetry components for its kitchens – Paul admits that it was not the optimum tool for casework assemblies. “It was taking a long time to programme our three-axis SCM Ergon machine tool,” he says. “We’d have a standard 600mm base unit with the holes and toolpaths – but if a customer wanted a 550mm unit, for example, I’d have to take it down by 50mm.
“So, in time, my Alphacam program had up to 150 different units. And if a kitchen contained 600, 500 and 400mm units, I’d put them on a separate sheet and nest them through Alphacam, which was a long-winded process when compared to Cabinet Vision, because it’s not optimised for that type of work.” So, the natural progression was to invest in Cabinet Vision for carcass work. Design manager James Graves now receives each customer order as an ArtiCAD drawing from its external designer, and imports it into Cabinet Vision. “As I’ve got a library of the 60 or so cabinets that we use regularly, I create the rooms by dragging and dropping the units into the project, and then editing them. The ArtiCAD file is
27/09/2019 12:22
69 often just a plan with dimensions on, usually in increments of 50, but with Cabinet Vision’s parametric capability and the parameters already set up, if I drop a 600mm unit in and change it to 587mm, all the relevant sizes and joins are all changed accordingly. Each one literally takes just seconds, and I can complete a full kitchen plan in around 20 minutes.” Being able to customise each unit is particularly valuable when he is working with the company’s handle-less cabinets. “We prefer to have these carcass-pressed, so we can choose that the jointing technique is all dowelled rather than KD-fitted. However, I can have KD fittings if required, and I have full control over their location and orientation. I can make all fittings on shelves up to a certain height face down, and the ones above it face up, so when the customer looks at it they don’t see where the fixing joints are.”
Each customer order is received as an ArtiCAD drawing and is imported into Cabinet Vision

Cabinet Vision’s powerful communication tool, with the CNC nesting machine, S2M (Screen-To-Machine), sends the NC code to the Ergon, which includes all the cutting and drilling instructions for the machine. Alphacam comes into play with the handleless units, notching out the areas on the side of the panels for the profile to fit into, by sending machining code to the company’s Homag Weeke CNC. Paul explains that this operation cannot be performed on the Ergon. “As it’s notched out, we wouldn’t be able to put the panel through the linear movement on an edgebander,” he says, “it just wouldn’t accept it. So we put it through as a rectangular piece which gets edgebanded on one edge, and as it’s neatly notched out for the profile on the Homag, the edgeband stays intact. “Alphacam is also used to produce any curved, complex shape and hardwood doors. All these programs are done solely with it.” And Alphacam also indirectly drives a Koch machine tool, by working in tandem with Cabinet Vision. “As the Cabinet Vision files go to S2M, it stores the programs in Alphacam, along with the position of the holes that need to be drilled horizontally. All holes – both on the main faces of the panels and the edges – are designed and placed there by Cabinet Vision. “I pull up the nested program in Alphacam, and those on the face are drilled by the Ergon. But I can also get the same file in a different format, which gives the hole sequence for that individual panel, and the horizontal holes are drilled on the Koch.” Concluding, James Graves says another advantage of using Cabinet Vision is that it means the company can give an accurate price for the job. “All materials and their price are in the system, so I can see at a glance how much each unit costs, and the price for the whole kitchen, right down to the screws. We can come in with a bottom-line figure to stay competitive. It’s a bespoke kitchen, but not a bespoke price.” www.alphacam.com www.cabinetvision.com

72 SOFTWARE
Tailor-made software from CAD+T Nick Hudson Fine Furniture has built its reputation on designing and manufacturing high-end, bespoke furniture for celebrities, well-known interior designers and respected architects for over 25 years. But, faced with increasing demand, stiff competition and a software package that was slow and laborious to use, Nick Hudson, owner of the Isleworth-based company, knew he had to find the right solution to move his business forward.
Front aspect kitchen design using CAD+T software
“There were serious limitations to the software we were using,” Nick Hudson begins. “We had been using a version of AutoCad for several years but it restricted us to simple 2D drawings and manual CNC programming. We had to create a DXF image file and relay that information to the CNC. “We were physically programming what drill bits we needed to use, along with the speed, rotation and depth required, as well as instructing the machine on every hole and cut-out that appeared on the design. It was extremely laborious, not to mention time consuming.
But more importantly, it was causing a bottleneck in the office because of the amount of work we needed to do before any material could be cut and assembled. “We couldn’t afford to keep our customers waiting and didn’t want to be in a position where we might have to turn down work because of our outdated software. We needed to find a software package that could simplify this process and help the company move forward.” Following a chance meeting at last year’s W Exhibition, Nick was given a demonstration of CAD+T’s highly customisable software packages. “I had spent a lot of time looking into other software options but I got the impression that they were very much cabinet-based and required some programming at the beginning of the process,” says Nick. “This is fine if you’re producing a lot of one
thing, but our business is based on a bespoke offering that requires flexibility and freedom to design a whole host of things. CAD+T’s approach was different. It was customisable and adaptable. It immediately caught my attention. “Another big advantage for us was the software’s framework. It was based on AutoCad, the same software my team and I were used to using. It allowed us to have a firm understanding of the software’s basic functions whilst offering us a whole host of new features that could benefit the business massively.” A big draw for Nick was CAD+T’s customised CAM interface. It generates CNC codes for one or more three- and five-axis machines easily. “Previously, we had to make the parts and cuttings lists ourselves on an Excel spreadsheet and manually type in the size, thickness and materials needed for each drawing,” says Nick. “It was an extremely drawn-out process and it was easy to miss something.

73 “If you happened to make a mistake, you’d have to trawl though the whole spreadsheet again to try and find out where you’d gone wrong. Worse still, if you decided to add to the design in any way, the whole list would have to be reworked and a new DXF file would have to be translated back to the CNC.” This was not only time consuming for the team but it also meant that the designers needed to have an in-depth understanding of both the product’s construction and the machine’s engineering. With CAD+T’s software, every part of the process works together to streamline manufacturing processes, whilst optimising machine running time. “In many ways, our new software has de-skilled our job,” says Nick. “Now, our new CAD software works directly with our CNC machine and the machine’s existing Masterwood program so we don’t have to spend our time compiling lists and manually programming the machine any more. Instead, we draw our designs in 2D and the software automatically creates a 3D drawing and automatically creates the parts and cuttings list ready for production.” Nick and his team were also keen to create detailed 3D drawings when pitching ideas to new customers – something their old software could not produce. Nick says: “When working with a simple wardrobe or table, it’s easy to understand a 2D front, side or plan view, but when you’re creating a made-to-order curved bar or a selection of concave units, it’s often challenging to sell the design to the customer with limited graphics. “With CAD+T, we can generate 3D views from any angle which, as well as giving the customer the ideal vantage point, brings our designs to life. It also gives us the opportunity to modify the design where we see fit – something we couldn’t often see clearly when working solely in 2D. “Everything about the software has been designed for convenience. As well as a bigger library, we can build designs significantly faster thanks to the software’s ready-to-use elements and its drag and drop templates. This is particularly useful when we’re recreating popular items like cabinets as they can be automatically selected, edited and saved for future projects.
Kitchen plan using CAD+T
FP312_Pages.indd 73
Kitchen model using CADT+T
“Previously, each cabinet would have to be created manually, but now parametric objects can be manipulated and reused whenever necessary. “The introduction of CAD+T’s software has impacted massively on our production. Now, a job that would have taken us five days can be completed in three, and even our most intricate designs can be created in the exact same way as our more straightforward designs. This has given us the ability to increase the number of jobs we take on and the level of complexity we are confident we can achieve in a shorter timeframe. In fact, we’ve already seen turnover increase this year whilst maintaining the same number of employees.” It has also future-proofed the furnituremaking business. “Just like our phones, our CAD software now updates itself automatically so it’s always being worked on to maintain its effectiveness. The framework also gives us the flexibility to add to the software package at any time. So, if our business model changes or we want to grow the business in any way, new features and software modules can be added
Kitchen design created using CAD+T
without a brand new software package needing to be bought, installed and learnt all over again. “On this occasion, we’ve had to spend time learning the new software, and it took some careful planning to integrate the new software without having to halt all production, but we knew that it was important to get the right software in place if we wanted the business to continue to be a success in the future. We had one week of intense training with a CAD+T specialist, and no stone was left unturned. They also came back to fine-tune everything when our production was fully up to speed. “CAD+T also offer ongoing technical support, which has been a great help to us as we continue to learn how to take full advantage of the features available to us. Because our software has been customised just for us, the team at CAD+T has a greater understanding of our products and can even log into our system remotely to direct us if we need it. “CAD+T has helped us to simplify our processes massively and has allowed us to continue doing our job well. Clever features and automation have massively improved efficiency both in the design department and on the factory floor, and as time goes on, I can only see this getting better.” office@cadt-solutions.com www.cadt-solutions.com

74 SOFTWARE
On the way to a smart factory with Homag’s digital assistants cabinetCreator – Powerful internet-based design software which turns ideas into finished furniture pieces
A key focus for Homag over the last few years has been based on the development of an innovative range of tools designed to simplify the daily workings for machine operators, whilst supporting production processes. While intelligent working has been at the forefront of developments within the woodworking industry, Homag has remained sensitive to ensuring its solutions are accessible for all levels of manufacturing. Simon Brooks, managing director at Homag UK explains: “One of Homag’s core focuses has been on developing a set of intuitive tools that simplify the daily working life of machine operators. The new range of digital assistants demonstrate Homag’s commitment to providing the market with innovative, practical solutions to both simplify yet revolutionise production for the future.” Homag’s range of digital assistants begins at the most important stage of production – planning, design and order management. Homag’s cabinetCreator is a web-based application which enables users to quickly and easily configure 2D/3D furniture visualisations. Via an easy step-by-step process, operators can choose from a library of pre-defined basic furniture shapes, which intuitively adapt to specific inputted parameters or alternatively create their own library of designs. Aiding the fast generation of production data, the application also provides individual part drawings and 3D assembly diagrams.
FP312_Pages.indd 74
Supporting with both planning and designing stages, cabinetCreator can be accessed easily on any internet device such as computers, smartphones or tablets – meaning operators can have an overview of the job status in the office, at the machine or on the go. Once the design has been finalised, cabinetCreator produces a bill of materials required for cutting, whilst generating CNC programs which can then be exported for use. This design software offers a fast yet simple solution for turning customer requests into finished furniture pieces. To efficiently collate all the order data related to each job, such as information from cabinetCreator, Homag has created a digital assistant called productionManager. When it comes to order management, traditional handwritten lists are still commonly used throughout businesses, proving not only to be time consuming but a method that poses the potential threat of inaccuracy. productionManager however, simplifies the
transition from paper to a more efficient and secure order system. Flexibly importing data in different formats from different systems, productionManager summarises all production-related data, providing users with a transparent status overview of all orders. This app also enables users to effortlessly import the files to a digital job folder which can be accessed easily at any given time via smartphone or tablet. At the same time, productionManager corresponds with further digital assistants which have been specifically designed for the latter stages of manufacturing. This includes applications such as productionAssist Cutting, otherwise known as intelliDivide, a cutting optimisation software which offers real time updates on production times, material usage and machinery status. Encompassing key elements of the manufacturing process, Homag’s range of webbased digital assistants will transform business processes, helping manufacturers speed up
27/09/2019 12:22
75 production, improve efficiencies and reduce costs. productionAssist: Sorting – eliminating the time-consuming search for components, this digital assistant simplifies the sorting process. Organising production to a high degree of accuracy, data collated from individually barcoded workpieces helps users to quickly identify parts correctly via the app. Users are also able to visibly distinguish missing parts or confirm the completeness of orders, thanks to the intelligent part recognition on the sorting shelf via LED signals. productionAssist: Assembly – illustrating both complete and exploded part drawings, as well as a 3D view feature, this digital assistant is specifically designed to aid the assembly process. Providing all information concerning a specific job straight to the user’s fingertips, productionAssist Assembly delivers detailed lists of all required fixtures, a bill of required materials as well as list of required hardware. Within the application users can also display all of the furniture designs which can be assembled with the selected parts. productionAssist: Edge – edgeband inventories can easily become disorganised if not managed carefully, however with Homag’s productionAssist Edge application, these can be handled in a simple yet efficient system. Using the internet device of your choice, the management software in combination with intelligent edgeband shelving offers users
1/2 page landscape.indd 1

Homag’s productionAssist – helps users quickly identify and find workpieces
direct access to stock and availability. Thanks to the clearly arranged LED display on the shelf, operators can quickly identify the edgeband they need eliminating any unwanted unwinding and damage. Simon Brooks concludes: “Revolutionising the industry with digital solutions, these new technologies from Homag enable us to assist manufacturers with all aspects of enhancing their facility to future-proof production processes.
“Increasing production efficiencies, reducing downtime and eliminating errors, these tools which are now available to the market bring a large range of production benefits to all manufacturers regardless of size.” For more information on Homag’s latest digital assistants or any of the smart production products, call Adele Hunt on 01332 856424. info-uk@homag.com www.homag.com

78 SANDING & ABRASIVE TECHNOLOGY
Mirka UK – 40 years’ expertise and experience in the UK sanding marketplace
The late 1970s was an important period for Mirka – it built its first production halls in Jeppo, Finland where the current group HQ is still located. At the end of that decade, in 1979, Mirka UK was established which marked the launch of a systematic internationalisation of the Mirka organisation, which still continues today. With 2019 marking the 40th anniversary of the Mirka UK business, John Legg met with the company’s sanding expert, Pete Sartain, at the firm’s Milton Keynes HQ. What was the motivation behind starting the Mirka UK business? What were the company’s initial objectives and key milestones? Access to the international market was an early priority for Mirka. The domestic Finnish market is small, so Mirka UK became the first daughter company of the Mirka group being established in 1979, followed by Mirka Germany the year after. Mirka initially served the market through
FP312_Pages.indd 78
an importer but saw an opportunity to move more into industrial processes from early hand sanding applications. The UK has been a leader in industrial trends and industry development and was an important early market for Mirka. John Hirons was recruited from the importer company to be MD of the newly-formed Mirka UK business, and good organic growth followed over the years.

How would you describe the essence of the Mirka business? What are the key values of the company? We are a clear, open and honest company with high operational and social standards and we are a company that trades well and treats all customers fairly – large or small. I believe we are well respected in the market and we are constantly motivated by looking to satisfy customer needs, and we are prepared to say no if things are not right. The Mirka business has good quality people working well as individuals and as a team heading in the same direction and I think Mirka is a positive and friendly company, an ambitious company too. The company takes sustainability seriously – environmental, social and economic – and we are committed to investing in new products. I believe Mirka listens to the customer, the market and company employees and we are always looking to improve. We are focused, committed and energised and one of the guiding principles is to never be satisfied; being better never stops!
We have had three locations in Milton Keynes over the past 40 years, the first two involved a distribution warehouse and offices. But for the past seven years we have been based in Saxon House, Furzton Lake where there are offices and now an impressive training and meeting centre for customers and staff. Product distribution comes via our group warehousing facility in Belgium, which offers a very fast and efficient customer order delivery service.
We have become a more solutions-based, customer-focused organisation and Mirka UK has a clear focus on improving customer production, output and profitability. What have been the company’s most impressive accomplishments? In my opinion, it’s our strong customer relationships. Aside from that, I believe we are a confident and strong organisation that is focused around the customer journey. We deliver innovation as a result of the business providing significant and regular investment into research and development in Finland – and this has led to some exceptional market-leading products such as Abralon, Abranet, Iridium, Novastar, Mirlon and electric power tools.
How has the UK business grown over the past 40 years? I feel that strong organic growth is the key to any successful and sustainable business. Mirka dedicated itself to thorough annual business planning to develop and deliver our staged fiveyear strategy.

27/09/2019 14:07
80 SANDING & ABRASIVE TECHNOLOGY In detail, how has the furniture and woodworking side of Mirka’s interests developed? Our business in the furniture and woodworking sector has grown in double digits for many years now. We believe it’s important to maintain contact with the customers that use our products on a dayto-day basis. This policy has served us well and we have gained the respect of the furniture and joinery companies in the UK by offering effective products and the expertise on how best they are employed. I feel that too many competitors are fixated on what’s being offered in the marketplace rather than what’s required; its only when you understand the needs of the customer that you can truly develop products that challenge the status quo and drive innovation at its best. We offer solutions not just products, a complete package to do the job and the expertise to ensure great results. Our distributors have also grown over the years enabling customers to buy from a multitude of sources. Coupled with this, there is also a distributor training programme to ensure the correct advice and product selection is always first class. What’s in store for the Mirka business in the UK over the next ten years? That’s easy – we will continue business development and we will take advantage of new market opportunities. We will drive to continuously improve customer satisfaction and we will launch more new products into the market that improve production, output and profit. www.mirka.com/uk/uk/

Movac and Irurena – fired up for success
Through dedicated research to develop the best wood coating – whatever the customer’s requirement – Irurena is always at the forefront of new technological advances. One such product recently developed by its experienced R&D team is the new Irufire B-s1,d0 fire-retardant coating system, which is based on two component PU acrylic-aliphatic coatings. This system has been developed to coat wooden surfaces which need to comply with the UNE-EN 13823:2012 Standard of reaction to fire SBI (Single Burning Item) test, and be classified according to UNE-EN 13501-2007 + A1:2010 (Euroclasses). The system comprises a combination of two main products – Irufire Primer IP-1 and Irufire Topcoat IT-1, which can be used to create coating systems that either maintain or upgrade to Euroclass B-s1,d0 classification. For use as a maintenance system for coating walls and ceilings made from wooden substrates that are flame retardant
and already certified as B-s1,d0, only one coat of Irufire Primer IP-1 (at 80-100g/m²) is required, followed by one coat of Irufire Topcoat IT-1 at the same film weight. The only variance for the upgrading coating system is the application of two-to-three coats of Irufire Primer IP-1, which is required to achieve a film weight of between 400-480g/m². In either system, following application and drying of the clear Irufire Primer IP-1, it is lightly sanded with 240-320g abrasive, and the sanding dust is removed prior to application of the chosen version of Irufire Topcoat IT-1. The upgrade system has been tested on the standard substrate as defined by EN13238: Reaction to fire tests for building products, conditioning procedures and general rules
for selection of substrates. As such, the B-s1,d0 classification obtained by this process can be extrapolated across any substrate of wood or wood derivative with a density equal or higher than 510kg/m³. The Irufire B-s1,d0 system has been certified for application in both clear coatings of any gloss level and pigmented coatings in any gloss level and any colour, giving the user ultimate flexibility to ensure that the client’s requirements are fulfilled. To further assist customers, Movac has developed an easy-to-use calculator which works out the quantity of coating that is required – of both primer and topcoat – based on the area (in m2) that requires coating. 08445 610070 www.movac.com

Prevent fire and explosions with Modesta
The fire originated in the wood storage of this particular doors and windows company. In this case, the safety equipment worked to preserve the filter
With the high risk of fire and explosion being an obvious hazard in the woodworking industry, it is not easy to keep up with both the latest legislation and increasing HSE and insurance checks on proper dust extraction equipment. Modesta often receives questions on ATEX or EN standards – but what do these regulations mean, and why are they necessary? Imagine it is the end of the working day in your factory, and everyone is about to head home. While the last door is being sawn, a hot particle is sucked into the dust extractor and reaches the filter installation, where it starts to smoulder. By now, all the staff have actually gone home, and a fire could spread quickly without anyone noticing. As harrowing as the idea of a filter installation burning down overnight might be, it would be even worse if the fire spread to the factory itself. There are so many aspects of the production process involving fire and explosion hazards, and just as many measures one can take to minimise these risks as far as possible. But it is just as important to have the right fire-
FP312_Pages.indd 86
regulating measures in case a fire or explosion does actually occur. This is what happens several times a year in woodworking factories across the country – a filter that complies with legislation prevents flames or an explosion from spreading to the rest of the factory. Minimising fire and explosion hazards is vitally important in a working environment where all the elements needed for a fire to ignite or an explosion to occur are naturally present – heat, an inflammable substance (such as sawdust), and oxygen. A factory also has to comply with European and local legislation. Wyboud Kloppenburg, MD of Modesta Filters, says: “We understand that keeping up with all these different regulations
is complicated, and it’s not the first priority of a woodworking professional. That’s why we would like to offer our expertise and years of experience in dust extraction to provide a clear overview of the rules, potential hazards and possible solutions.” To understand legislation like the DSEAR, one must first take a look at European regulations. All machinery used in the EU needs to bear the CE mark, which testifies that the machine has been designed in accordance with any equipment-relevant safety guidelines. ATEX, the name used for European directives covering explosive atmospheres, comes into play in industries where combustible dusts or fuels are used or produced during production.
27/09/2019 14:21
87 To make ATEX easier, several institutes have designed harmonised EN standards that offer the machine designer and user a more practical way of dealing with the legislation. A few of these EN standards apply in the wood and interior industry: EN 12779 for the safety of woodworking equipment and dust extraction; and EN 16770, which specifically covers extraction units for indoor use. Note that ATEX focuses mainly on the safety of personnel, limiting the damage and containing the fire or explosion when it happens, but it does not necessarily consider the prevention of fire and explosion hazards. Units designed in accordance with EN 12779 are the way to go if one wants to make sure that the system complies, states Modesta. In Great Britain, the requirements specified in ATEX were put into effect through the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (DSEAR). “In a woodworking factory, every part of the production process comes with its own specific fire and explosion hazards,’ says Wyboud. “It’s important to be able to identify these and come up with a fitting solution.” For starters, a woodworking machine can be a fire hazard in itself if dull tools are used, or if its parts are jammed or not running smoothly, resulting in sparks. That is why regular and thorough maintenance is vitally important when minimising fire and explosion hazards. Even when machines are properly maintained, sparks can also occur due to small metal pieces and hot particles being sucked into the extraction system. Sawdust from wood production is extracted into a ducting system before ending up in the filter itself. The sparks can set leftover sawdust on fire in the ducting system. Wyboud says: “This can be prevented by always ensuring that your filter system has a sufficient extraction capacity for the size of the factory you’re operating, to prevent dust accumulation in the ducting.” Factory plans and production capacity can change over the years, resulting in a different set-up or a higher extraction need. “When the system isn’t operating within its ideal range, this doesn’t just mean a loss of energy, but it’s also a potential fire hazard,” explains Wyboud – which is why it is so important to reassess the capacity of the dust extraction system regularly, especially when changes occur on the factory floor. A periodic Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) test is mandatory and essential in maintaining a safe
The QEX quality mark guarantees the installation complies with all legislation and (local) requirements
FP312_Pages.indd 87
Dust extraction with an explosion panel on return air, in accordance with ATEX
working environment. But this test assesses the extraction capacity of a system, not the risk of sparks within it. Although not mandatory according to ATEX regulations, a spark detection system, combined with an automatic fireextinguishing system, will prevent fires in the pipes. The filter system itself can also pose a danger, as any ignited sparks in the ducting system will be sucked into the filter itself. Fire valves offer the solution here, states Modesta – they make sure the fire is contained in the filter, and prevent further damage to the rest of the factory. “Fire hazard should be considered at the very beginning of setting up a factory,” says Wyboud. For instance, the positioning of the filter system itself can prevent major damage if a fire or explosion occurs – installations over 8000m3/h should be positioned outside the factory walls and have the right fire-extinguishing connections for the fire brigade. According to ATEX regulations, the explosion’s pressure wave has to be able to leave the installation safely. To guarantee this, explosion panels must be installed in the filter itself, and in the return air ducts going back into the building. Positioning storage spaces for wood and sawdust is also important – they should be as
far away as possible from the filter installation and factory buildings (preferably in a separate building) to minimise the risk of a transient fire. Filter systems with a capacity up to 8000m3/h can be installed inside the factory, but among other things, they should have their own extinguishing system, according to EN 16770. Units for indoor use need to be able to withstand an explosion. Fire and explosion safety is not just about preventing risks within a specific system. Wyboud says: “We would like to raise awareness in every aspect of the factory, as we believe the factory’s safety is more than the sum of its parts.” From woodworking machine positioning to a ducting system, absolutely everything should be considered when setting up a safe and hazard-free factory floor. Modesta can help manufacturers in taking both fire-prevention and fire-regulation measures, considering their entire set-up critically, and advising the steps to take towards a safer working environment. Lastly, Modesta applies the QEX Quality Mark certification, which simply means the installations meet all legislation and (local) requirements. www.modestafilters.com

Striebig stands the test of time For over 16 years, family-run timber merchant H Nordstrom & Son has been cutting over 150 panels a day on a Striebig vertical panel saw. The saw has become a fundamental part of the supplier’s business and a valued workhorse – but with almost 900,000 cuts to its name, growing demand for cut-to-size timber and the addition of a bespoke in-house joinery service, the independent merchant has worked with Leicester-based machinery supplier, TM Machinery, to find a suitable replacement.
“Since my grandfather founded the company in 1953, we have focused heavily on quality and service. It’s what we are known for, and it’s why we’re the largest independent timber merchant in Sunderland,” begins David Nordstrom, general manager at H Nordstrom & Son. “When our old Striebig vertical panel saw started to show signs of aging, we knew we had to find a suitable replacement in order to minimise any disruption to our day-to-day business and the quality of cuts we were producing. “Our old saw had served us well, and it had showed us just how robust and reliable a Striebig saw could be – but new machinery always involves a big investment, so I had to do my homework before settling on a new saw. I looked at several vertical panel saw brands, but the quality of the Striebig’s build was a huge selling point for me. “Could a different brand work tirelessly for over 16 years to the same high standard, and would the ongoing service and aftercare be as good as what I was already getting? I knew what to expect with both Striebig and TM Machinery, and I had confidence in both companies. It didn’t take me long to realise a new Striebig was the best option for Nordstrom.” David’s requirements were clear – the saw needed to cut upwards of 100 MDF, plywood and chipboard sheets accurately every day, and have the capacity to work with jumbo sheets. Any additional features that could simplify the job and reduce errors were, in David’s eyes, not essential, but a welcome addition.
FP312_Pages.indd 90
Within six weeks, a Striebig Standard S TRK1 vertical panel saw was installed, and David chose to integrate the saw’s Comfort Package into the build process. This included several accessories including a TRK dust extraction system, pneumatic clamping motor carriage, pneumatic brakes and laser indicator for horizontal cuts. The saw was also built with a digital measuring system for both X and Y axes, offering a display accuracy of 0.1mm on every cut. “Stripped of the Comfort Package, the old and new saws are extremely similar, and, just like its predecessor, the new Standard S does the job very well – but the added digital read-out stops and laser indicator have not only simplified the cutting process, they’ve guaranteed an extremely high level of accuracy on every cut,” says David. “The brakes and rollers have made handling even easier and the repeat cutting gauge has also proved very useful when we have had lots of strips to cut. We can simply set the machine to repeat the cuts as many times as we want, saving the operator a lot of time and increasing the number of cuts we can do in a day. It’s certainly been a welcome addition to our machinery line-up and allows the operators to precision-cut sheets and panels to size quickly and effectively. The machine does all the hard work and the results speak for themselves. “Working with TM Machinery on this installation has been seamless, but if I’m honest, they’ve always been an easy company to work with. The team are always on hand to give us expert advice, and their knowledge of the
Striebig range is second to none. “What I can’t stress enough is the build quality of these machines. Striebig saws are built to stand the test of time, and our experience is proof of this. If this machine runs as long as our last saw, it will have been another worthy investment. Here’s to another 16 years of service!” 0116 271 7155 www.tmmachinery.co.uk

TFS launches enhanced door processing service A leading processor of coated and laminated wood-based products, Trade Fabrication Systems (TFS) has expanded its pre-finishing service for doors to include pre-machining, following recent investment in a state-of-theart door processing machine. The machine, which was installed in March, has the ability to accurately pre-work doors, before they are pre-finished to client specification. Replacing works previously completed onsite, the machine will precision rout spaces for lock mortises, hinge plates, letterboxes, viewing slots and numbers or even room names. Accredited to ISO 9001:2015, TFS has established a leading service offering to the highest quality standards. Howard Morris, managing director at TFS, comments: “At TFS, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to expand our service offering. “Understanding how to improve traditional methods within the construction industry, this was the next logical step for us to become the one-stop-shop for timber products and an integral part of the supply chain for builders’
merchants and housebuilders.” Doors can now arrive on site precision cut, factory finished and protective wrapped, helping to streamline the site sequencing between joinery and finishing trades. Decreasing the time spent onsite by a joiner to complete these detailed works can help save the team valuable time prior to installation, reduce potential damage and increase quality. One regional housebuilder that is already benefiting from TFS’ pre-finishing paint processes is Melrose Homes. Not only achieving the advantages of site efficiency, TFS’ ability to individually wrap prefinished doors and deliver to site just-in-time has had a massive impact on the quality finish of the doors. Howard concludes: “It is important to us that we offer our customers the very best in terms of quality. We can now factory pre-finish to any RAL colour or lacquer, pre-machine, individually wrap and deliver to site just in time, saving the contractor time and money whilst improving overall efficiency.” www.tradefabricationsystems.co.uk

SR Timber sees solid panels growth SR Timber – a leading importer of specialised timber products, and best known as the UK’s largest importer of roofing batten – is reporting that its diversification into timber panels is paying dividends as that side of its business continues to deliver solid growth. The company – which is based in Suttonin-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire – grabbed the opportunity to expand into the timber panel sector by offering a range of products that are used in the manufacture of bespoke wooden kitchen and furniture products. It has focused on one core product type – solid wood edge-glued panels, which originate from wood species including European oak, North American white oak, Scandinavian pine (knotty pine), knotless pine, European beech, European ash, tulipwood (yellow poplar) and American black walnut. It is introducing some new products to the range: 100% FSC teak that uses D4 glue so it can be used inside and outside in finger-jointed and full-strip modes; poplar in full strips of 12– 30mm thickness (suitable for painted furniture); and three-layer solid wood panels in oak and American black walnut, which are a very stable product for kitchens and tabletops. In developing its collection, the company is focused on supplying bespoke kitchen and furniture manufacturers, as well as carpenters, joiners and general builders looking for new or alternative supply chains. SR Timber’s trading director Shaun Revill says the company is offering high-quality products, a consistent supply of stock, quick turnaround times on deliveries and very competitive pricing. “Our edge-glued timber panel products have been an exciting development for our business. We have clearly tapped into a sector where furniture manufacturers appreciate what we bring to the market, and our growth over the last couple of years is testament to that,” says Shaun.
FP312_Pages.indd 94
“Offering reliability of stock quality and supply, as well as responsive customer service, is what we do best in other parts of our business, which is why we have become the number-one supplier of roofing batten – and that now applies to the panel side of our business. “We work closely with leading panel producers across Europe, South America and Asia, regularly receiving shipments into our warehouse in Sutton-in-Ashfield, resulting in the continuous availability of fresh, high-quality stock.” All of SR Timber’s panels are sourced to the same exacting standards of quality and sustainability, with all timber being purchased in accordance with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR).Its panels are available in full-length stave construction (full strips), and its worktops are finger-jointed. Each hardwood panel is
individually plastic-wrapped for protection and is supplied with square edges, allowing it to be machined to any profile. Shaun adds: “Our panels are manufactured at carefully selected third-party production plants, and we only work with suppliers who demonstrate robust working practices and have years of experience in manufacturing, which allows us to offer the highest-quality panels. “Our dedicated staff, led by Simon Cunnold, trading manager of our Engineered Timber Division, have more than 25 years’ experience in importing timber panels, which means that our wealth of knowledge allows us to source the best wood available from a global network of manufacturers who have proven track records in supplying timber panels.” 01623 446800 www.sr-timber.co.uk

Wood Waste Technology helps Stoke Fire Doors save money Stoke Fire Doors offers a complete range of fire door services, and operates from a 10,000ft2 unit in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Its existing mains gas heating was proving expensive to run, costing between £6000-7000 a year, and the company was hiring skips each week to take away manufacturing waste, so its management decided to invest in a new woodwaste heater. Director Mark Daniels looked online for recommendations and discovered Wood Waste Technology, based locally.Mark was impressed with the range of heaters manufactured by Wood Waste Technology and especially liked the ability to add a summer heat dump, to allow waste wood to continue to be burnt throughout the hotter months. After a quote and site survey, Stoke Fire Doors ordered a WT15 heater, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers into a dedicated unit outside, with the heat piped into the main building. Mark says: “This is by far the best investment we’ve made in our
business to date! The team at Wood Waste Technology is extremely knowledgeable, providing us with much needed guidance and advice. Our unit is placed near a residential estate, but because Wood Waste Technology is a Carbon Trust Accredited Supplier, they checked out that there would be no problem having one fitted. “We’ve definitely made the right decision for our business buying the WT15. It’s great that we can burn all our waste wood and other suitable rubbish, so need to send less waste to landfill. Our waste disposal bills have reduced tremendously, saving us around £5500 a year, plus we no longer have any heating costs. Would highly recommend that any woodrelated manufacturing businesses investigate the benefits of investing in a woodwaste heater.” Wood Waste Technology is also the UK distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a manufacturer of precision engineered shredders and briquetters, and for Putzmaus’ boiler tube cleaning systems. www.woodwastetechnology.com

Enhancing Heritage With Lamello Tenso P-10 : la solution rapide et invisible pour l’assemblage de matériaux fins “Lamello is giving value to our customers and adding value to our business through enhanced quality and efficiency. What more could you ask for? ”
Artichoke's pursuit of enhanced quality and improved efficiency has led it to the door of Swiss fixings specialist, Lamello.
Lamello’s Zeta profile biscuit jointer is at the heart of Artichoke's workshop “Our company is about keeping traditional skills alive and embracing new technology,” begins John Hampton, Production Manager at Artichoke. “We specialise in the design and build 88 Lamello.indd 8
of super high-end furniture for large period homes. It’s our job to add value to architecture and create bespoke pieces that not only stand the test of time but are seen as part of the property’s heritage. To achieve this, we have to work with the very best consumables on the market and continue to push the boundaries of design.”
Lamello. Following a detailed demonstration of Lamello’s Zeta profile biscuit jointer by one of Lamello’s UK distributor’s, Axminster Tools, John and his team were given six weeks to put the jointer and a selection of connectors though their paces.
“It was an opportunity we couldn’t refuse,” admits John, who looked thrilled with the idea of his team putThis clear vision has led the Somer« Des Idées contre les normes », telle C’est lors du salon HOLZ-HANDWERK ting the Zeta to work. “When you’re set-based business to invest heavily in est la devise de l’atelier Gross. “Take the Tenso for example. The glue-assist connector has simplified the way we glue our mitres on our more contemporary-styled kitchens. We apply thick profile edges onto internal shelves which, in the past, would require a lot of time setting-up and removing sash claps. Then there was the long gluing process. Now, thanks to the Tenso and its self-clamping design, we simply apply the glue at any angle and leave it to dry.
The Clamex offers Artichoke a strong and reliable alternative to using cams and pins when transporting items
used it on a couple of smaller projects to get an understanding of its capabilities and to see if it was a good fit for our company. It got the green light within hours of the team getting their hands on it. “Our industry is very traditional and many of the techniques we use today have remained unchanged for centuries. My team take great pride in these mastered skills and are sticklers for detail and quality. This has made them shy away from modern methods more than once, and rightly so, but the Zeta had a very different response. They saw the potential straight away and it’s been in constant use ever since.” Before the introduction of the Zeta, Artichoke’s cabinet makers would join frames onto carcasses using traditional cams and pins. “To avoid disruption on-site and to be certain of the quality of each piece of furniture, we like to transport our furniture as complete as possible and put a small parts kit together in order for the installation team to complete the job. The downside to using cams and pins in this is way is that you can’t insert the pins into the back of face frames before they leave the assembly area in case they damage the item. They are also notorious for coming out of the frames during the build. Lamello’s Clamex offered us the perfect alternative for this application.
low profile that reduces the risk of damage when being transported to their new home. Its clamping system also gives us the option to temporarily or permanently fix the face frames to work around the different stages of each build. Plus, we have the added flexibility of being able to swap Lamello’s consumables to best suit the application we’re working on. These decisions can be made during the installation process which, when working only on bespoke projects, helps us solve unforeseen complications that may arise on site.” The team has gained valuable experience working with Lamello’s complete range of fixings, including the Clamex, Divario, Bisco and Tenso. “Each connector brings its own unique benefits to the table,” explains John, as he shows me an example of a large kitchen his team is assembling in the workshop with Lamello connectors.
John concludes, “I firmly believe that if there is a better way of doing something, you shouldn’t be afraid to try it. Buying into the Lamello product range is a clear example of this. It’s important to build relationships with companies that share your company’s values and if you build relationships with the right companies, it makes you stronger. Lamello and Axminster Tools do this. They have a fantastic reputation and that gives us confidence to invest in them. There is an upfront cost involved when purchasing the kit but we’ve seen a return on this through the speed of application and the ease in which it’s been integrated into our methods and processes. It’s giving value to our customers and adding value to our business through enhanced quality and efficiency. What more could you ask for? “We’ve recommend Lamello to a number of cabinet makers in a bid to build industry knowledge and if you’re reading this and wondering if this could be the product for you, why not ask for your own demonstration and see the results for yourself?”
Lamello’s Clamex makes on-site installation quick and fuss-free
“As well as being designed as a strong, temporary fixing, which has helped us reduce assembly time, they also have a 99 Lamello.indd 9

Highlights from our partner network Automated Cabineo assembly with the Homag Centateq N-600 At this year's Ligna, Homag presented the Centateq N-600 – the first CNC machine that automatically press-fits the Cabineo connector. This makes Homag the first provider to offer a unit for automatic connector placement on nesting machines as standard. The triple drill hole is made in a single stroke with the Multi V3 Cabineo unit from Benz and pressed into the support plate fully automatically by the CNC machine. A robot handles the transportation of the finished pieces at the outlet.
For customers, the manufacturing process is paramount. The new “Centateq N-600 is Homag's response to this focus on process, offering

Quick, simple, professional: Gannomat Most Gannomat machines are suitable for working with Lamello connectors – both in trade and in industry. The Basica Variabel drilling and insertion machine is the universal drilling machine for the Cabineo, allowing even the 5 mm counterbores to be drilled with ease. The Express RTA can drill and insert two Cabineos in around five seconds. CNC machines from Gannomat follow the motto "ONE-4-ALL". The complete P-System and the Cabineo can both be processed on the Protec. The milled recess is introduced into the surface for the P-System using 3-axis movement and the shaft tool. The Index machine enables full insertion of the Cabineo and the P-System connector into the edge.
The entire P-System and the Cabineo can be processed with the Gannomat ProTec.
OS Datensysteme GmbH – Lamello's New CAD Partner Lamello’s new partner, OS Datensysteme, offers an extensive CAD/CAM product range, including the OSD Corpus+ carcass generator. Technical data for the Clamex P, as well as the Cabineo, can be adjusted individually when required in OSD’s industry-specific program, with the help of a graphical input mask. Cabineo and Clamex elements are available in the OSD Corpus+ carcass generator for both straight and mitre joints. The OSD CAD/CAM solution uses data supplied to create instantly executable CNC programs. In the case of the Clamex P, machine control is based on macros from the machine manufacturer, allowing OSD users and Lamello customers to enjoy maximum utility and enormous time savings.
