Comment Visiting manufacturers is one of the key elements of my job, and it is a considerable privilege to get to know how different businesses set about the process of furniture or joinery manufacturing. This month, I was lucky enough to speak with two successful kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture manufacturers. Although they set about the task in different ways, the principles of quality manufacturing and customer-focused integrity had me nodding in agreement and smiling with admiration for both companies. Both share a similar endcustomer base of those who can afford beautiful, hand-crafted furniture of this type (around the £10k-£100k mark). Indeed, the pair also reported robust sales in the highly competitive KBB design and fit-out sector – one even reporting 2019 as its strongest year to date after 16 years of trading.

Elsewhere, our politicians continue to provide no clear view of what kind of post-Brexit (if we ever get there!) business environment we are likely to find ourselves working with. This ongoing lack of leadership is forcing an increasing number of businesses into a kind of stupefaction where they are wrapped up in trying not to turn left when everybody turns right. This fear – whilst understandable at some level – is typically misplaced. Business always finds a way, no matter the obstacles. In simple terms, businesses at all levels should, in my opinion, keep their progressive, optimistic principles intact, and not be tempted to sit by and wait until the dust settles. There are businesses across this great nation, which, despite the challenges, are committed, brave, talented and determined to drive onward. Therefore, for suppliers, there’s always a customer looking for your products, services and input. As this issue goes to press, it would appear that there will be a December general election for the first time since 1923. As businesses, we have to look beyond the short-term to the medium- and long-term – but whilst planning for a post-Brexit, post-general election time might for some be the stuff of fantasy and illusion, a keen 20-20 vision is, rather appropriately, exactly what we all need as we enter 2020. Today, as never before, business needs to communicate with its target audience. Thankfully, the thousands of you who visit our leading trade event, the W Exhibition, only have 10 months to wait until the next edition. In the meantime, enjoy our magazine/website/newsletter/social media platforms. As always, your comments are welcome – I hope you enjoy the issue.

Kite’s charitable approach Letchworth’s Kite Packaging has made two significant charity donations. The company’s regional distribution centre (RDC) in Letchworth nominated local charity Stars as the recipient of a £1000 donation, helping the charity continue its bereavement support service to Cambridgeshire. Stars’ service provides a high level of support and care for young people who have experienced loss. The team at Kite’s Letchworth RDC had the opportunity to visit Stars and meet some of the people who carry out this support for young people.
Kite’s Midlands RDC, meanwhile, has donated £1000 to Macmillan Cancer Support. After a member of Kite’s team experienced Macmillan’s support first-hand, the managing partner for Kite’s Midlands RDC, Justin Filby, visited the Macmillan Cancer Support team, and met Pauline Lewis, a senior fundraiser for the charity. The donation will help provide funding for a Macmillan nurse for almost one week in support of care for people living with cancer, as well as ensuring their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.
New MD at Jet Press After 31 years at engineering fastener specialist Jet Press, Andrew Mitchell has been appointed MD. He replaces Ian Barnes, who spent 25 years with the company (17 of them as MD). Oliver Guest from Jet Press Holdings comments: “Jet Press has always had a great team of highly skilled people and a track record of successful internal promotions. Andrew’s knowledge and understanding of the business,
customers, markets, suppliers and products is second to none and this, along with his strong commercial judgement, puts him in a great position to lead the business forward.” Andrew has spent most of his time at Jet Press in sales and marketing roles. He gained a marketing diploma from Nottingham Trent University in 1995, and since April this year has been Jet Press’ executive director, preparing to take on his new role.

Egger Group has implemented ISO 38200, a new global standard for the transmission of information along the supply chain of wood and wood-based products, which regulates the transmission of information from logging to delivery to the end customer. The group is known as a promoter of sustainable forestry and the responsible handling of resources. Sustainable procurement is a matter of course for Egger, as is compliance with national and European laws including EUTR. The International Organization for Standardisation (ISO) has created ISO 38200 to make the traceability of wood or wood-based products more transparent, and maintain proof of origin and legality through continuous supply chain
monitoring. In addition to general aspects of control and inspection, the standard also categorises social criteria, environmental criteria, and due diligence system (DDS) requirements. The new standard also helps Egger present its sustainability indicators in a more detailed manner. Walter Schiegl, Egger’s production and technical group director, says: “Forward-thinking action, which is also geared to future generations, is based on ecological, economic and social sustainability, and has always been our established practice. “With the group-wide implementation of the ISO 38200 standard, we are setting a further step towards promoting sustainable forestry beyond meeting all legal requirements.” www.egger.com/environment

The V&A builds for the future with Festool As part of its commitment to sustainability, the V&A museum has developed two furniture upcycling initiatives using surplus stock of its exhibition pack crates.
These initiatives demonstrate how waste materials can be given a meaningful life beyond a limited purpose. In one initiative, nine designers were partnered with clients from the 999 Club, a homelessness charity in London, to co-create a piece of furniture that can be taken into temporary accommodation. The other gathered designers to create tables and chairs, also using the waste packing crates, for a Food Waste Feast that was held at the Day of Design event. Throughout the project, Festool power tools were used. James Wilson, marketing manager at Festool UK, says: “We are delighted that Festool products were part of this sustainability initiative, that has enabled expert designers/makers to share skills with people who have experienced homelessness, and create unique pieces of furniture.” The project had a five-week turnaround time from design and creation to exhibiting at the Day of

Design Festival, which was part of the London Design Festival. The short turnaround time for the project meant that the power tools used needed to be sturdy, reliable and deliver accurate results, fast. Furniture designer and maker Tom Olesen joined the project to mentor one of the 999 Club’s clients. “It is the small innovative features of Festool tools that make life easier,” he says. “For example, on the router OF 1010 the spindle stop means that changing cutters is simple, so we can get the job done quickly.” Zoë Louizos, sustainability coordinator at the V&A, adds: “We are thrilled to have been able to use Festool products. This project makes valuable use of our surplus materials and showcases creative solutions to waste and provides a platform to support a diverse community of designers and makers, demonstrating design solutions to environmental and social issues we currently face.” www.festool.co.uk

Masterwood unveils new showroom In July, Masterwood GB started operating from its new offices near Gatwick Airport, with facilities for its first showroom. The specially-designed and built offices will allow the company to grow and take on more office staff to deal with servicing of machines, spare parts and training. This is an exciting time for Masterwood GB, coming after the company achieved 10 years of trading in February this year (although many of its staff have been connected with Masterwood Spa for up to 30 years). The company is now stocking up the showroom, which started to become operational at the beginning of last month. Once all the facilities are set up, various open days will be arranged to demonstrate the full capabilities of the latest CNC machines and all software packages that
Masterwood has to offer. Bespoke product demonstrations will also be available for existing and new customers. Dedicated software packages for stairs, windows, cabinets, doors, furniture and 3D are all available through Masterwood as a complete package – what the company says is a unique situation in this industry. Masterwood will be offering bespoke training packages to suit all levels and abilities for both CNC and software, delivered by its experienced technicians. With the uncertainty of Brexit and
how imports into the country will be affected, the extra space will allow Masterwood to keep a larger stock of more vital spare parts, so in the event of a breakdown, the company will be able to get a machine up and running in the quickest time possible. A large supply of tooling, cones and collets – as well as secondhand parts that are no longer obtainable for the older machines – will also be kept on site.
FP313_Pages.indd 12
While Masterwood GB has always helped customers that have brought secondhand machines elsewhere – and will be pleased to continue doing so – it will now be able to deal directly in more secondhand Masterwood CNCs. For an updated list or information on available CNC machines, contact the office by phone or email. 01293 402700 www.masterwood.com/en

Hales Sawmills invests in operator training with Daltons Wadkin Ensuring high levels of machine safety and knowledge has increased the skills, confidence, and quality of work produced by operators at Hales Sawmills as it invests in the future. Hales Sawmills, formed by Bill Parton and his son Julian Parton in 1982, specialises in bespoke and mass-produced timber furniture including gates, panels, fencing and more, and has undergone major expansion over the past four years. This has so far resulted in a 15% rise in production thanks to investment in new machinery and the development of a new mill. Julian reports that Hales is now producing approximately 1500 gates per month. The expansion of the company follows a rise in demand for their specialist services and quality timber products. The quest began for new machinery, servicing, and training, which led Hales to get in touch with Daltons Wadkin for advice and a tailored proposal throughout the expansion process. No stranger to Daltons Wadkin, Hales had been purchasing machinery from the company for over 20 years and knew it was in safe hands. Finalising Hales requirements resulted in the purchase of two Stenner ST100R resaws, a Kuper planer moulder, Wadkin CST planer thicknesser, and numerous Graule crosscutting
FP313_Pages.indd 14
machines. Following this, it also increased the size of its workforce, and with new machinery and new operators comes the need to ensure safety and machine knowledge is up to date. “We want people to come here to work and be safe, so we get the professionals in to take care of that and to service all the machines as well, to make sure everything is kept up to a high standard,” says Julian Parton, director at Hales Sawmills. Daltons Wadkin was able to supply, install, re-commission, and service machinery for Hales. Following this, Daltons Wadkin sent in a member of its red team of operator trainers to deliver on-site certificated training. The most recent training has been on the Wadkin CST planer thicknesser. As with all training courses from Daltons Wadkin it was a hands-on and engaging session to be part of. Speaking to one of the operatives afterwards he commented, “It’s good to know what these machines can and can’t do. Trainer, Lee Hopkins, has been fantastic, the three of us have learnt a lot and it should make it much easier for us in the future”.
Properly training operators on machinery ensures high levels of skill and efficient production, feeding back the best quality products to the end user. Common misconceptions and bad habits can become engrained, for example Daltons Wadkin often find that things such as noise levels of the machinery go unnoticed. For example, did you know that a noise level of over 80 decibels requires a risk assessment? If so, great. If not, perhaps a bit of refresher training could benefit your team. Daltons Wadkin’s approach to training is unrivalled. Training is conducted on and around the machine as much as possible, which results in a practical and engaging session where conversation is encouraged, and operators go away with enhanced knowledge and confidence. To find out more about the range of courses available, including wood machining, abrasive wheel, portable power tools and supervisor training, contact Daltons Wadkin. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

Ercol turns to Intorex
Ercol’s Originals range
Ercol Furniture is one of the best known and most respected UK manufacturers of quality wood furniture. The company was founded in 1920 by a young Italian called Lucian Ercolani, whose single goal was to make furniture that was well designed and expertly created by craftsmen who really took pride in their work.
Fast forward nearly 100 years and those guiding principles are still very much at the heart of the company which has managed to combine traditional values with modern manufacturing techniques. To this end Ercol has, in recent years, made significant investments in some of the best, state-of-theart CNC machinery that is available. The latest additions have been a new Intorex CNC wood-turning lathe and CNC sander for the production of its turned chair, table and sofa feet components in oak, ash and walnut which are an integral design feature in many of the products Ercol produces.
Intorex CNX CNC lathe
FP313_Pages.indd 16
It was some years ago that the Ercol production team recognised that it needed to upgrade from its old Hempel lathes, which, whilst still operational were starting to give some problems both mechanically and also from a health and safety point of view. Ercol operations director, Ian Peers, engineering manager Mick Platt and operations support manager, Roy Graves, put together a specification of machine that they hoped would meet their requirements and visited a number of trade fairs to talk to prospective suppliers. As a result of this a visit, to the Intorex factory, located just outside Barcelona, was arranged
to see various models of lathe in operation. After further detailed discussions a model and specification was settled on, including some special adaptions specifically requested by Ercol. The lathe was a top-of-the-range CNX 1600 high speed model with automatic hopper feed loading. As standard the machine is equipped with two independent CNC controlled gouges and two rear hydraulic back knives whose operation is controlled through the program. To suit some of the turned components Ercol producess the CNX would need to be fitted with a number of additional features, the main one being a fourth CNC-controlled axis allowing for a router unit to be fitted. Traditionally the router head is used for producing fluted or twisted designs, but in this case Ercol wanted it to drill holes both straight and angled in the turned component. (These are for fitting the cross rails in chairs.) After a detailed study and simulation in the design office, Intorex confirmed this could be done with the hole position, angle, depth and number of holes set through the CN program. As almost all of the parts are fully turned, the CNX has the added advantage of having a pre-rounding tool fitted before the steady, thus giving an additional cutting gouge, making three in total. However this pre-rounding gouge usually has hydraulic operation and has to be mechanically set. Due to the number of different size square blanks Ercol wanted to turn, Intorex was able to make this unit also CNC controlled meaning no manual setting was required! Lastly, although the rear dowel knife units are in the main used
30/10/2019 15:28
17 for producing a dowel or 90° square shoulder at the end/s of the turning, an additional three roller pneumatic steady can be fitted which is used to give extra support to the very thin chair back spindles which Ercol also produces. Once the specification of the lathe was agreed, matters then moved on to sanding the turned components. Although there is an option to have a sanding unit fitted on the lathe, it was decided that a dedicated rotary sander would be needed to keep up with the production output of the lathe, whilst also giving a very high quality finish to the turned part. Intorex suggested its rotary seven position CNC-controlled LNX 1500 model that uses the same intorEDIT design software as the lathe. This meant that once the profiles had been created for the lathe, the same ones could then be used on the sander. As standard, the Intorex LNX 1500 has two independently CNC-controlled flat-belt sanding units together with mechanical oscillating brush back sanding units. After seeing a machine in operation local to the Intorex factory, a final specification was agreed, again including some features specifically requested by Ercol. Shortly after their return to the UK, Ercol placed an order for both machines through exclusive UK agent JJ Smith. They were delivered and installed on time in July and prior to dispatch three people from Ercol went over to Intorex for a week’s training at the factory.
Ercol’s Roy Graves comments: “From the very first time myself and Mick Platt started to talk with JJ Smith and Intorex we had a good feeling that they understood our requirements and were very open to suggestions we made for specific modifications to suit our production needs.” “However the real proof came when we visited the Intorex factory to see the machines in operation, time their production and see first hand the quality of turning we could expect to acheive. Also I have to say the training at the Intorex factory went extremely well and nothing was too much trouble.” Production manager Brian Alman adds: “The Intorex lathe and sander have now been installed for several months and we have been very pleased with their performance. They are quick to set up and produce very accurate turned parts with an excellent sanded finish.” JJ Smith sales director, Guy Stanley, concludes: “We regard it is a real feather in our cap that a company of Ercol’s standing selected to work with us on this project. It is also a credit to Intorex that they were able to find some non-standard technical solutions that Ercol specifically asked for.”

Complex designs made real by Cabinet Vision Alphacam’s production software is turning designs into reality at Daw Green Contracts, a supplier of high-end fitouts to the likes of Trailfinders, royal palaces and the Houses of Parliament. To say that Alan Ruddock – works director of Daw Green Contracts – is passionate about the woodworking industry would be an understatement. He built his own workshop in a shed when he was 14, and had woodworking tools for Christmas as a child, taking his own full set of tools into his O level woodworking exam. And he fully admits that if you cut him, he’d bleed sawdust. “It was just born within me,” he says. “When I started working in the industry, I couldn’t believe I was getting paid to do something I loved so much.” And now, he is equally passionate about the Alphacam software which programs the company’s three-axis SCM Record 125 router. As well as currently using Alphacam on every
FP313_Pages.indd 18
project the high-end shopfitting company works on, he is also expanding its use of Cabinet Vision, which also drives the Record, through its Screen-To-Machine module. Manufacturing everything from counters to displays, stands, wall panelling, ceiling features, desks and storage units, anything with a curved shape goes through Alphacam. “We’ve also had Cabinet Vision for a few years, but only recently started to really exploit it for carcasses and pure cabinetry components,” says Alan. Amongst the company’s prestigious clients are: travel agency chain Trailfinders; royalty, including Buckingham Palace, Holyrood Palace, Windsor Castle and Clarence House; and the Houses of Parliament.
Travel agency chain Trailfinders is among the company’s clients
“Because we only work at the real top end of the market, precision and quality is paramount for us,” Alan continues. “Our biggest challenge is the complexity of what we do, and with time being one of the major drivers of the industry, we’re always looking to save time, while still ensuring consistently high quality – particularly in the process of converting the original drawings into NC code for the machine tool. This is where Cabinet Vision is starting to play an increasingly important role.” When it first invested in Cabinet Vision it was part of a period of considerable change for the company, and the software was underutilised. Now, while Alphacam will continue to program complex components, Alan says a lot of the case work is better suited to Cabinet Vision. “The difference is, once we import our CAD drawings into Alphacam we have to break down the individual components and redraw them in Alphacam, then insert all the holes and fixings. But Cabinet Vision produces the panels for us from the CAD drawings, and this will save us a tremendous amount of time, while reducing the risk of human error.

19 “Those drawings show the entire shop, including all the other trades – air conditioning, electrical, and flooring – and we extrapolate the cabinets, and treat them as individuals.” He says further time savings come from Cabinet Vision’s parametric function. “Basically, we make boxes – a counter with cupboards and drawers is simply a box with other boxes inside, and as we’ve already invested time up-front with building up libraries and construction methods, we simply drag and drop a cabinet into the job, and when we edit one length, it automatically changes the other dimensions. “Sometimes those boxes have complexshaped components, and we’ll need Alphacam to program those toolpaths, but the majority are now put directly through Cabinet Vision.” As well as accuracy and time savings, he says Cabinet Vision offers another huge benefit for the workshop – labelling. As well as the software producing drawings showing all the panels coming off the router, Label-IT enables Daw Green Contracts’ operator to clearly visualise the panels, print labels at the machine, and then simply place them on the parts as they are nested out.
The screen is updated automatically to show which parts and panels have been completed. Information on the labels includes the client name, job number, description and edgebanding details. “This is particularly important for the shopfloor to take a pallet of parts and know which ones need to go to the edgebander, or directly to the bench for assembly as a finished counter or desk,” Alan explains. “It’s like putting a jigsaw puzzle together with the box lid picture, as opposed to doing it without the lid.” In conclusion, Alan says Alphacam has been valuable and integral to his company’s processes for many years, and Cabinet Vision is set to become of equal importance as it is fully implemented. “The software turns designs into reality for our high-end customers,” he concludes. “Without it, our production would simply stop.” www.cabinetvision.com www.alphacam.com

Mirka enables sanding of narrow gaps Mirka is launching a new extension pad to enhance the versatility of the Mirka(r) DEOS 353 CV 81x 133. The pad’s overhang will enable users to sand further into corners and hard-to-reach areas, while delivering the highquality smooth finish synonymous with the DEOS range. The new pad is versatile enough to handle multiple applications, but has been specifically developed for sanding window shutters and sash windows, which have traditionally been tricky to reach with a normal orbital sander because the slats are narrow and difficult to access. The Mirka(r) DEOS is the only electric orbital sander on the market that has been optimised for net abrasives by incorporating more than 45 holes in the pad. When the tool is combined with Mirka’s net and paper abrasives, it offers an impressive scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment. Its innovative features incorporate a powerful brushless motor which provides a high powerto-weight ratio when in use. The design team has been able to reduce the weight, size and height of the sander, providing customers with a compact, lightweight and easy-to-use tool. In addition, it has an integrated vibration sensor with Bluetooth technology that can be connected to a mobile device with the new

myMirka app to give guidance on vibration levels. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – industrial of Mirka UK, says: “As a business, we want to provide the right tool for the job at hand. Our R&D team has listened to what customers require for jobs they are working on, which has led to the design and development of the new extension pad. “We believe this pad will increase the versatility of the DEOS 353 by making it easier for users to reach difficult, hard-to-reach areas, making sanding narrow gaps a thing of the past.” www.mirka.com/uk

Press Play with Interprint
Amberg
Interprint has opted to drop the traditional collection concept, and do something new instead – the decor printer’s Press Play concept sees the company take a bold step through the introduction of an ever-expanding playlist of decors … Interprint states that the success of its previous Six Pack collection is no excuse to simply bring out a new edition, and so has ended Six Pack’s success story to make way for a new approach. “Times have changed,” says Interprint. “Bringing out a collection once a year and setting a mega-trend is so old school. Today it’s all about endless feeds, streaming services and Spotify – we consume differently, faster, and continuously. The constant flow of news and stories updates us about new trends popping up and microtrends forming all the time. “Press Play never stops moving either, staying agile and on-message all year long. Interprint uses the decor playlist to react to new trends and fresh currents as they appear throughout the year, totally re-shaping them.” This unusual idea – a decor collection which is not really a decor collection – is typical of the Arnsberg printer, which has already unveiled three decors to set the pace. “The first is the oak-effect Amberg, a real long-player with massive hit potential,” states Interprint. “The used look is key to its special character, giving it an authentic backstory. The natural vibe and smooth style add to the

23 harmonious feel. “Primus, on the other hand, is a tribute to Europe’s heritage – the sophisticated remix of pale woods like birch, maple and alder in a striped pattern goes really well with the even texture for a clean Scandi look. “Finally, Meta keeps fans happy with a clash of micro terrazzo and concrete. This trendy decor blends the hip terrazzo look with a scored effect. Inspired by luxury marble, Meta also brings the flecked stone pattern to furniture fronts – you really should see it for yourself!” Press Play aims to inspire the industry and encourage manufacturers to see things in a new way – and not just once a year. “You’ll be seeing new trends all the time – mood-setting decors, harmony-generating surfaces and materials that you really have to see for yourself,” Interprint explains. “If you want to tune in to the first all-time decor playlist, there’s an Interprint Group playlist called ‘Press Play | 09 2019’ on Spotify. Suddenly the idea doesn’t seem quite so weird!” www.interprint.com

Vollmer introduces new VHybrid machine
Vollmer VHybrid 360
The new VHybrid 360 Grinding and Erosion machine can be used to machine solid carbide or PCD cutting tools in a single setup. The VHybrid 360 not only provides tool manufacturers with high efficiency for reduced machining times, but also maximum precision. A wide range of automatic settings enable unmanned production around the clock. With the new Vollmer tool manager, users can manage the automatic switching of up to eight grinding or eroding wheels intuitively. For grinding and eroding tools The introduction of the VHybrid 360 from the Swabian specialist in grinding and erosion machines allows tool manufacturers to grind and erode carbide and PCD tools like drills, milling cutters or reamers in one combined set-up. The VHybrid 360 is based on multi-layer machining, which is implemented through two vertically arranged spindles. Here, Vollmer
Vollmer VHybrid 360 work envelope
FP313_Pages.indd 30
At the recent EMO exhibition, sharpening specialist Vollmer presented the new VHybrid 360 Grinding and Erosion machine. This nextgeneration machine combines grinding and eroding technologies with experience that Vollmer has gained throughout its history.
is using the tried-and-tested technology of its VGrind grinding machine series. With the VHybrid 360, the bottom spindle can be used for both grinding and eroding, while the top spindle is reserved exclusively for grinding. The best of two worlds With the VHybrid 360, Vollmer has not only combined the best of both worlds for grinding and eroding, but has also further developed proven technologies. From the world of erosion, Vollmer has incorporated knowledge gained through more than three decades of working with wire and wheel erosion machines from different model series. The key component is the VPulse EDM erosion generator, which sets new standards when it comes to efficiency and surface quality. From the world of grinding, meanwhile, the ultra-modern machine concept of the VGrind series ensures high-precision machining with both spindles of the VHybrid 360 vertically arranged in the pivot point of the C-axis. This guarantees high-profile accuracy and enables exact grinding and eroding processes. In addition, tool machining times can be reduced, thanks to the shorter linear-axis travel distances, that are a credit to the unique spindle arrangement. Making tool production more flexible The VHybrid 360 can be used to produce different cutting tool types for machining processes in the wood, metal or composite material sectors. The Vollmer machine gives tool manufacturers the flexibility to perform fully-fledged grinding and eroding processes on standard and special tools – regardless of whether the blanks are made of carbide, sintered PCD or brazed diamond tips. The machine can be used for tools with diameters up to 50mm and lengths to 360mm. Depending on the configuration of the grinding wheels or rotary electrodes, larger diameters are
also possible. An optional steady rest ensures stability for long tools, and a new five-axis control guarantees precise execution of the grinding and eroding processes. Simplifying operation and unmanned operation A range of automation solutions enable unmanned machining around the clock. For example, the HC4 chain magazine can hold up to 39 HSK 63A tool holders. In addition, up to eight grinding and eroding wheels (including coolant supply) can be exchanged fully automatically – in a process managed in the VHybrid 360. This is available for the first time, thanks to the newly-developed Vollmer tool manager. With this, machine operators can select the grinding and electrode sets intuitively and easily using a drag-and-drop option. The combined grinding and erosion machine is based on the established Vollmer control panel concept, with a height-adjustable, pivoting touchscreen. The grinding and eroding processes are programmed, simulated and monitored via the ExLevel PRO 3D software. The axes can be selected and moved with the Vollmer multifunction handwheel. In addition, the machine has a dressing device for rotary electrodes and an integrated wheel probe for ultra-precise calibration of the grinding and eroding wheel packages in the process. “Tool manufacturers today are often development partners for their customers and are involved in the tool planning phase from the outset in order to achieve efficient machining of a wide range of materials,” says Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the Vollmer Group. “And, whether carbide or diamond tools are required, the hybrid machining technologies in our VHybrid 360 enable precise machining of a variety of rotary tools, such as drills, milling cutters or reamers.” 0115 949 1040 www.vollmer-group.com

Edgebanding starts here
In an age when having the utmost quality of products is no longer considered supplementary but essential, production technology must offer consistent quality without compromises, whatever the level of the range – and this is the underlying value behind the Akron 1100 range of compact single-sided edgebanders from Biesse. The Akron 1100 range is ideal for small-scale producers that want to modernise production. Within its price range, the Akron 1100 is the only technology on the market offering highlevel components like the Rotax motors made by HSD – the leading manufacturer in its sector – states Biesse. There are three machine configurations, offering choices on trimming, corner rounding and pre-milling. Control is executed via a 7in touchscreen – the only one on the market at its price point, states the supplier – which offers an icon-driven, highly intuitive interface. It also provides feedback in the form of valuable machine information, reports and statistics relating to the daily work being carried out, highlighting productivity levels and any setting issues. Malcolm Storey, brand sales manager at Biesse, comments: “This entry-level range stands out in the market for its high specification, quality and performance. The Akron 1100 has the capability of applying edge material from 0.4-5mm solid wood lippings, with a 10m/min track speed. “In addition, changeovers from thick to thin edges, along with machine set-up, is very quick and simple. The Akron 1100 range is the ideal machine for a first-time user, providing a quality edge finish. “We also offer a walk-in in demo service whereby customers can visit us at any time and see how easy the machine is to set up and operate.” www.biessegroup.com

AMS expands Wadkin Bursgreen saw range Advanced Machinery Services (AMS), one of the few companies in the UK that offers a straight-line edger and multirip saw range for the industry, presents its new heavy-duty re-saw, straight line edger and multi-rip saw range. The company is both excited at the prospect of bringing its new additions to the Wadkin Bursgreen range to the industry. “For many years, there had been a gap in the market for a heavy-duty, straight-line edger”, says AMS’ director, Steve Foster. He adds that his previous employer. Wadkin, had put hundreds of the PU range into the UK market, but these are now becoming very old and expensive to keep. “When the opportunity came along some 12 months ago to become the UK and Ireland’s sole distributor of this new range, AMS grasped it with both hands.” AMS director Steve McGloin says: “We were aware of machines out there, but were looking for a top-quality heavy-duty range of saws, re-saws and multi-rips. “AMS placed orders straight away. The whole range is available to view in our Leicestershire showroom, where visitors will be able to see, touch and try – and ask all the questions they want.” AMS has also developed – along with the manufacturer – special training courses to enable its customers to use the new machines confidently and to speed up the setting process. The company’s engineers are fully trained on the new range and can confidently store and commission equipment. 0844 844 9949 www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

TeraBlack is more than just an option With a close eye on emerging trends in the international furniture market, cabinet hardware expert Titus has developed TeraBlack versions of many of its most popular products, including its successful T-type hinges.
The new Tera (Titus Enhanced Resistance Application) versions feature an attractive non-reflective dark grey finish, which not only retains its appearance throughout its working life, but also offers enhanced resistance to corrosion. “At Titus, we put a lot of effort into monitoring developments in the furniture sector, and recently we’ve seen a growing demand for matte black cabinet hardware,” says Phil Beddoe, general manager at Titus UK. “We weren’t satisfied, however, with the idea of responding by simply offering another colour option – we wanted to offer a market-leading solution that combined a visually appealing dark matt finish with genuine and valuable product benefits. And, drawing on our unique expertise in cabinet hardware development and manufacture, that’s exactly what we’ve done with the new TeraBlack versions of our products.” Particularly well suited to applications in high-end premium kitchen furniture, Titus TeraBlack products fully meet the requirements

Striving for perfection with Lamello Ooma:design specialises in architectural joinery and high-end, bespoke furniture design. From conception to design, no two projects are the same, leading the Wiltshire-based company to source fixings that not only boast impressive manufacturing credentials, but also offer flexibility and innovative design opportunities. For the craftsman at Ooma:design, this has led to a longstanding relationship with Swiss fixings specialist, Lamello.
Ooma.design use a wide range of P-System fixings to suit individual design projects
FP313_Pages.indd 36
30/10/2019 11:27
37 “Our business is extremely design-led,” begins Michael Cadwell, cabinetmaker at Ooma:design. “Instead of being steered by our manufacturing processes, we put design first. It might be seen as a more complicated process, but it allows us to create hand-crafted pieces that are true originals. “To achieve this, we need to be able to rely on each and every fixing we use and know that they can meet our high expectations every single time. Using versatile brands like Lamello makes this achievable and allows us to do things our way.” Any craftsman at Ooma:design will tell you that it takes a lot of skill to create something that is seamless. This is why the team uses a wide range of P-System fixings to suit individual projects. “We tend to favour Lamello biscuits in our bespoke cabinet designs because they guarantee our panels will come together lush,” explains Michael. “We don’t need to spend time sanding or planning to achieve perfection because we know it’ll be spot-on every time. “More traditional methods would see us using glues and screws to achieve the same look, but this would mean having to spend time watching over the product to see where the base would meet and acting quickly if there was a possibility of it going wrong. It can be a very manic process – that’s why joiners get the ‘glue sweats.’ When there is a Lamello biscuit slotted into place, the uncertainty is taken away. All you have to do is make a jig and off you go. It allows us to complete jobs faster without compromising on accuracy.” Lamello’s magnet-driving Invis connector has also become a firm favourite, thanks to its completely invisible design and impressive clamping force of up to 250kg per connector. “We used it recently to join a kitchen worktop made of two very large sheets,” says Michael, who oversaw the installation. “The results had to be seamless and installation quick, but it was difficult to join because it was cornered in by a wall. Because of this, the clamping force
Lamello’s Divario P self-clamping connector proved the solution for this tight staircase design
FP313_Pages.indd 37
Ooma:design cabinetmaker, Michael Cadwell
needed when using traditional gluing methods would have been near-impossible to achieve, but Lamello’s Invis pulled the sheets together perfectly without the need for any glue. It’s completely invisible to the customer and offers the utmost strength.” Lamello’s verticality has also changed how the company thinks about things, offering the flexibility craved by the company’s creative team. “The fixings give us so many design options,” says Michael. “We were recently commissioned to create a very tight, square-shaped spiral staircase. Each tread – which measured 1500 x 1500mm – centred around a circular tube, but because of the size of the staircase, every third tread would have ended up overlapping if we couldn’t find an alternative solution that would be suitable for use in such a small working area.” Lamello’s Divario P self-clamping connector was the solution. Using the invisible fixing, the team was able to make every third tread of the staircase float, leaving the fitters to simply slide them in around the other parts on site. And,
because the Divario P clamps the components during insertion to create a tight joint, it was easy for the fitters to insert the pieces without leaving unsightly joins. “Without Lamello, we would have had to had to have used loose tongues, which would have taken considerably longer and the immediate results wouldn’t have been as good,” Michael explains. “The Divario P was a modern-day hero in this application.” The same can be said for much of Lamello’s P-System range. Depending on the application and what the customer wants to achieve, there is a host of solutions on offer. “The Tenso P and connectors are perfect for fitted furniture that needs to stand the test of time, whereas the Clamex is ideal for items that need to be re-assembled on site quickly without affecting the fixings’ rigidity,” Michael continues. “We tend to use the Clamex P alot when we’re working with big structures that need to fit together perfectly on-site, or on items that may need to be moved later down the line, as it doesn’t require any glue.” Reflecting on his experience of using Lamello’s P-System, Michael adds: “Lamello allows you to achieves things that you shouldn’t be able to do when using more traditional techniques. Lamello products allow us to achieve perfection. “It’s a big statement to make, but Lamello references the best. You have to buy into Lamello like you would any system, but it’s a worthy investment. For us, we have no time to waste on middle-of-the-road products, and our designs need to be right first time. Our customers expect the very best, and we need to deliver. “Lamello has been a part of my entire career, but the results never fail to amaze me. It’s a pleasure to work with such great products, which allow cabinetmakers to achieve new possibilities.” 0789 1025 646 www.lamello.com

Forty years of Accuride 3000 Many in the furniture and joinery industry will be aware of Accuride Drawer Slides, and the Accuride 3832 is a recognised leading solution for furniture manufacturers. Just a few years after Jet Press was founded in 1977, Accuride designed the Model 3000. This was the first telescopic slide designed by Accuride, and helped cement the company’s reputation for premium craftsmanship and reliability. Jet Press became a UK distributor for Accuride in 2001, and on the back of this successful partnership, became a distributor for the German market in April 2019. In the furniture world the 3832 provides smooth movement, time after time, for kitchen
FP313_Pages.indd 40
drawers, pull-out shelves and PoS trays, to name just a few applications. It is a light-duty, mild steel slide with a load rating of 50kg. To ensure this drawer slide provides a long, trouble-free life, Accuride tests the 3832 for 80,000 open-andclose cycles. There are numerous features that make a pair of 3832s the first choice for many designers. Firstly, it offers full extension so the user can access everything inside the drawer. It also has front disconnect, so they can remove the drawer – a helpful feature for cleaning. There is also a hold-in detent to prevent roll-out and bounce back. Accuride also thinks about making life easier for the people manufacturing furniture. Its patented Cam Drawer Adjust allows for precise vertical adjustment, and a new face frame hole provides easy access to mounting. An optional clip-on bracket is available for bottom and platform mounting. Jet Press carries stocks of seven versions of the
Accuride 3832 including black, white and harsh environment options, and has access to the full range of slides. The team has unrivalled expertise and experience in the furniture and joinery industry, and is happy to work with clients to design the best solution. 01623 551800 www.jetpress.com

Ferwood: bridging the gap Downtime is costly for any business but when manufacturing performance door sets and fire doors for both the public and commercial sector, short lead times, consistency and guaranteed delivery slots are non-negotiable. For Hartlepool-based Bridgman IBC Ltd, this has meant investing strategically in reliable machinery and, where necessary, doubling up on its most vital machines with the help of global reconditioned machinery supplier, Ferwood. “Every manufacturer can relate to the frustration of machines breaking down and in our line of work, we can’t afford to miss deadlines,” begins Peter Bowes, operations director of Bridgman IBC. “We trade principally on our ability to deliver product on time and as a result, we go to extra lengths to eradicate any issues that may arise before they have the potential to disrupt our manufacturing capabilities and lengthen our lead times. To combat this issue, we’ve got a back-up for every process that takes place in our plant. “We have more than one press, several means of cutting product to size and more than two CNC machines for cutting glass and lock mortises into doors. It’s been a big investment to get us to this point but it’s important for us to identify areas of strategic weakness within our business. This has highlighted our need for an alternative edgebanding facility so we are not hindered by a machinery breakdown going forward.” Peter admits that the company’s existing Homag edgebander works well with the dense timber needed to apply wood lippings to its FD30 to FD120 fire door range but he knows even the best machines can break down unexpectedly and was keen to guard against any potential interruption to production. “It was clear that we needed a new edgebander to eradicate this doubt. We run both new and used machinery, each differing greatly in the level of technology and the number of features they offer. On this occasion, we didn’t need a machine with a plethora of fancy gadgets included. It needed to stick a lip on a door and trim it flush. “That said, the machine needed to be robust enough to cope with upwards of 200 hardwood lippings a day, each measuring up to 20mm thick – not the usual 6mm lippings used on a standard domestic door housing – and be able to work with the same polyurethane hotmelt adhesive we’ve been using for a number of years. This would eliminate any problems with quality or continuity, while also reducing the need to
FP313_Pages.indd 42
stockpile different adhesives. We also get asked to put a lot of intricate ironmongery into the edge of doors and rebates, as well as various profiles, so the new edgebander also needed to work efficiently with chunky pieces of material.” After being signposted to Ferwood following a recommendation from a colleague and following the installation of a fully reconditioned Ferwood Approved UV tunnel on its lacquer line earlier in the year, Peter knew Ferwood was a company that delivered on its promises. Peter adds: “I was impressed by their level of service and the reconditioning process and, after highlighting a need for a second edgebander, Ferwood were able to modify a machine to fit our needs perfectly. In fact, they built it especially for us.” Finding a used machine with the exact configuration needed by Bridgman IBC wasn’t going to be easy due to the rarity of machines on the market that were capable of working with wide hard wood lippings. But, with hundreds of used machines in its inventory, Ferwood was able to reconfigure the door manufacturer a machine to suit its specification. Ferwood’s engineers used the frame of one machine – stripping it down and leaving only the controls in place – and remounted the necessary machining units onto it. It was built to fulfil the company’s exact requirements and, because it had been assembled and tested in line with Ferwood’s premium reconditioning programme, Ferwood Approved, the edgebander was installed into its new home by a specialist engineer. The purchase also came with ongoing technical support from Ferwood’s after-sales team and a six-month warranty for extra peace of mind. “During the build process, Ferwood asked us to ship materials over to them so they could test the machine on our own door blanks, cores and lipping materials so we could see what the machine was capable of. It looked and ran like new,” admits Peter. After a visit to the factory in Italy to see the machine in action, the installation took place a few weeks later. The first call to Ferwood’s sales team to the machine running its
first door set took just under three months. Peter adds: “The benefits of buying a similar machine meant that our operators needed minimal training on the machine and its software. The engineer left no stone unturned and the installation was quick and easy. In fact, the whole team was knowledgeable, straight talking and responsive, and that allowed us to achieve exactly what we had set out to do. “It was never a hard sell with Ferwood. It was more of a collaboration than a sales process. It wasn’t a cheap solution but we got what we paid for: a fully reconditioned edgebander that fits the bill. It has everything we need and nothing more. Going forward, Ferwood will be my first port of call.” 0113 286 6689 www.ferwoodgroup.com

The NeXting Generation has begun In a world that is moving towards flexible and batch-one production, nesting technology is a focal point for furniture manufacturers. The possibility to carry out a great number of machining operations and also manage shaped pieces allows producers greater flexibility to carry out most operations on a single CNC machine. Despite the benefits, there are some limitations to traditional nesting machines. The three main issues that are strictly connected with the nesting process are spoil board management, productivity – when compared with beam saws – and holding capacity on small pieces. SCM has designed, developed and tested innovative solutions to overcome these issues for customers, giving them the opportunity to improve productivity and flexibility at the same time. The results of work done in recent years is reflected in the new NeXting CNC machines Morbidelli x200 and x400. A spoilboard is a necessary requirement for nesting as it would not be possible to work directly on the machine’s table without damaging it. However, this brings with it a series of complexities that must be managed by the operators – starting from the skimming, up to the change of spoilboards that have ended their useful life, or the removal of the spoilboard, when there is a need to work with pods or jigs that must be fixed on the machine’s table. The NeXting Generation of SCM machines has exclusive and innovative features which allow the customer to manage the spoilboard in the easiest possible way, without removing it, as previously required – executing horizontal drilling on the panel or placing vacuum cups on the table are operations which involve nothing else, but dedicated units, with great time saving in managing the machine, thus increasing flexibility and productivity. Other important innovations introduced concentrates on the ability of the machine to hold down even the smallest workpieces while machining. The optimisation of the vacuum-
FP313_Pages.indd 44
holding capacity has been one of SCM’s main focuses during the development of the new Morbidelli series. Like many other nesting machines, the new Morbidelli x200 and x400 can be equipped with a zoned worktable that enables suction areas to be closed when not in use. These are the only machines where it is possible to have the new X-Vacuum system, a real dynamic vacuum activation development, and an innovative automatic feature that carries the vacuum right where it is needed. A new labelling system and cutting speed up to 50m/min will allow SCM customers to reach
a productivity never seen before on a nesting machine. And that is not all – like the cars many people drive every day, it is possible to use the new Morbidelli series in smooth, neutral or dynamic mode – the equivalent of comfort, drive and sport – in order to quickly customise the execution of programs. Years of development and investment have led to the new Morbidelli x200/x400. Very high performance, great configurability and a competitive price allows SCM to create a machine tailor-made for each customer. 0115 977 0044 www.scmgroup.com

Are you covered? Since 1926, KBB Insure has made it its business to understand its clients’ businesses, which has, in turn, enabled it to provide tailor-made insurance policies to suit individual business requirements.
KBB Insure boasts extensive experience in assisting manufacturing businesses, highlighting the risk, control and prevention measures to help reduce accidents associated with the types of machinery used – especially in the woodworking industry. Alongside Public and Products Liability and Employers Liability Insurances, the company focuses on Material Damage and Business Interruption. KBB Insure approaches every business with an open mind, but its experience has shown that the main risk, due to the nature of materials in use, is fire. Some points to be aware of are: Housekeeping It is essential that standards are high. Insurers expect the effective use of fixed extraction systems that are regularly inspected (LEV) Waste management Particularly the sale and storage of wood for biomass, and the burning of wood for heating purposes.
FP313_Pages.indd 46
Firewalls Where possible, segregate areas within openplan workplaces to minimise the spread of fire. Machinery and premises Replacing machinery is normally a quick process, but thought needs to be given to the availability of alternative premises. Tooling Have duplicates available in case of loss or damage. Highly flammable liquids Limit the daily use of these in the workplace, and have an external storage facility. Health and Safety policies within the workplace, plus ongoing accredited training procedures, will help minimise exposure of the workforce to risk. KBB Insure takes great pride in providing advice that enables its customers to not only survive, but keep their business working, should the worst happen. Steve Mason, of 1st Choice Fitted Bedrooms in Darwen, Lancashire, comments: “We have invested significantly in new plant and machinery to maintain our reputation for cuttingedge technology. The risks of injury and damage evolve and change with this advanced level of manufacturing. As we are fully committed to Health and Safety, quality assurance processes and a clean working environment, it is important that we remain aware of the risks. “KBB Insure’s Stephen Cadman fully understands our business processes and
requirements, and provides advice and bespoke insurance protection. KBB Insure (Munro Greenhalgh) are an integral part of 1st Choice Fitted Bedrooms, and are key to the smooth running of our business.” Stephen Cadman comments: “We are delighted to have helped 1st Choice Fitted Bedrooms for over 10 years, changing their policies as and when they have improved their machines and processes. We have tailored cover to their needs, including (for both manufacture and installation) material damage, business interruption and liabilities. “The use of fixed woodworking machinery is perceived as high-risk, but some machines are worse than others. It is important that we fully understand the processes to ensure that our clients are properly covered at the best possible price, and that, should a disaster occur, our inhouse claims team can respond quickly to help.” T 0333 005 9619 info@kbbinsure.co.uk www.kbbinsure.co.uk

Flexible finance options enhance online service Close Brothers Asset Finance has been championing the UK’s small businesses for over three decades, including those working in furniture and joinery production. Here Close Brothers takes a closer look at how it helped Boardland, a family-run manufacturing and joinery firm, upgrade its capacity while also developing their online offering.
From its factory in Northamptonshire, Boardland manufactures a wide variety of products, including cut panels, skirting boards, architraves, door frames, cupboard doors plus many other products from MR MDF (HDF), softwood and hardwoods. A few years ago the owners, in their own words: “Felt the time was right to move with the times and offer an online service.” The service – Boardland.co.uk – was developed to offer customers a fast-track, bespoke facility at competitive prices, providing delivery throughout the UK. To further enhance its services, Boardland needed to upgrade its CNC capacity by acquiring an SCM Sigma Prima 67 beam saw. A quick finance solution was required but with a flexible deposit because the business was investing heavily in the new website. Following a meeting between Boardland’s managing director, Derek Rance, and Close Brothers Asset Finance, a 60-month structured Hire Purchase and Sale and HP Back was agreed, including a £0 deposit with security taken over existing machinery and equity released in the assets for VAT, leaving cash flow unaffected.
FP313_Pages.indd 48
The outcome CNC services are now being advertised on the new website, helping to increase production capacity and profit margins. Derek comments: “We already had a longterm relationship with Close Brothers Asset Finance and know that they work closely with key suppliers enabling them to make quick
decisions and turn things around quickly, so they were naturally our first port of call. The finance product offered enabled us to invest elsewhere, including the website, and delivery of the machinery was made within the same week of the order.” 01244 457569 www.closeasset.co.uk/woodworking

Considerations when outsourcing debt recovery When the powers of the Small Business Commissioner are strengthened, it will hopefully change the culture of late paying prevalent in the UK, writes Phil Wilding, head of debt recovery at law firm Wright Hassall – but chasing unpaid invoices can be a drain on resources for the average SME. Seeking professional support will help, but not every company will be right for a business, and there is a number of considerations to bear in mind when selecting a debt recovery partner … It’s now easier than ever to undertake action yourself to pursue debts up to £10,000 through the small claims process, but debts above £10,000 need to be treated carefully, and seeking professional legal advice before pursuing such a claim is highly recommended. Businesses will typically consider a debt recovery agency (DRA) to help pursue their debts. It’s important to find a service provider offering an end-to-end debt recovery solution, from pre-legal through litigation to enforcement. This allows the level of activity or tone of recovery message to be escalated. But if the DRA does not have the capability or expertise to take legal action, then it effectively has no teeth. Any threats they make of legal action are essentially empty – unless they then outsource their legal requirements to a solicitor. And remember, London-based DRA are likely to charge more. Firms will often specialise in what debts they recover, which allows them to understand the situation more quickly and apply tactics learned through experience of addressing similar challenges before.
Phil Wilding
FP313_Pages.indd 50
An explanation of costs Work with a business that understands that each debt requires a different approach, rather than a prescriptive, one-size-fits-all solution. When the initial cost for the first letter or call is very low, it tends to indicate a system predicated on bulk processing, rather than a tailored service. Ensure you have a quote for the expected cost of recovery, as any reputable DRA must outline their fees or commission rates during the engagement process. Also, look for a DRA regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which offers you protection if they fail to act in an appropriate manner, and for added quality assurance work with a law firm regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Protecting customer relationships Debt recovery can be a stressful process. If you decide on court action, a lot of evidence will need to be gathered, like copy invoices, contracts and copies of correspondence exchanged between the parties – whilst continuing business as usual. Your customers will discuss you, and any weakness or mistakes in your pursuit of monies owed could trigger a raft of unpaid debts as
more test your willingness to get tough. Outsourced debt recovery can help protect those all-important client relationships. Law firms in particular will handle every aspect of the required communication with clients, who will understand it’s just the way you protect your business and your invoices. Law firms experienced in debt recovery have the necessary teeth if the action needs to be escalated, but understand the commercial realities of the supplier/customer relationship, and will offer pragmatic advice regarding which debts are worth pursing. Work hard to avoid court Ideally, you should try to settle disputes and exhaust all reasonable options before commencing court action. However, if court action is necessary, seek legal advice – this is now beyond the scope of DRA with no legal aspect to their service. Once you engage in the court process, there are rules to follow and again, any mistakes could reduce your opportunity to recover a debt. Court is only really a sensible option if the customer not only refuses to engage in the debt recovery process, but also has the funds to cover the unpaid debt. Choosing the right debt collection agency could well affect the ultimate success of your money being recovered, so do your research and choose wisely. Finally, consider engaging the firm on a regular basis to act as your outsourced credit control department, delivering a seamless service that also takes the pressure off your in-house team. www.wrighthassall.co.uk

Movac and Irurena – environmentally focused
Most are aware of the increasing importance that environmental challenges have on people’s daily lives, and the purchasing decisions relating to them that are made as consumers. This is something that the wood finishing industry is not immune from, with more emphasis – particularly in the shopfitting and interior fit-out markets – being placed on the use of coatings with the lowest environmental impact. The requirement to comply with the standards promoted by BREEAM UK Refurbishment and Fit-out and New Construction certification promoted by BRE is being implemented in 80 countries worldwide. The SKA rating scheme from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is also becoming more prevalent as an environmental assessment method used during non-domestic fit-outs, and both of these standards include
FP313_Pages.indd 52
coatings as part of the assessment criteria. To enable wood finish coating users an easy route to compliance with these and other environmental standards – including A+ air quality ratings – Irurena, working with Movac, has developed a full range of environmentallycompliant coatings. The complete range has been developed with exceptionally low levels of VOC, and because of this has been awarded EU Ecolabel certification.
Ecolabel is a label of environmental excellence that was established in 1992 and is recognised worldwide. The Irurena Ecolabel range of products available from Movac includes: Hidral TP-1014, a water-based self-sealing clear lacquer with good scratch and chemical resistance and impressive yellowing resistance properties; Hidral TPP Colour, a selection of water-based pigmented topcoats with an attractive appearance and touch, with good chemical and yellowing resistance, available in any colour; Elite Stone, water-based floor lacquers able to be applied by spray, brush or roller application with resistance to friction, scratches and heel marks and with a slip co-efficient, making it suitable for sports centres and public buildings; and Irufire B-s1,d0 Aqua, water-based maintaining fire-retardant lacquer, with good chemical and scratch resistance and impressive UV stability. Kite far exceeds waste reduction target Employee-owned business Kite Packaging has exceeded its 2019 target to cut down on the use of plastics. Having set itself and its customers the challenge of achieving a 120 tonne reduction in plastic use by the end of the year, Kite has announced that it has hit its target early. Kite’s ‘120 tonne challenge’ was achieved within seven months, with an impressive reduction of 138 tonnes. The focus on plastic reduction saw Kite increase its environmental product range and launch its mobile test facility unit, which has been travelling the UK with Kite’s packaging experts on board to advise businesses on the most waste-minimising and efficient packaging solutions. The reduction also led to Kite no longer sending out any direct mailings in polythene mailing bags, as well as carrying out an ongoing review of its distribution process to minimise plastic wrapping around products. Kite has also launched a guide explaining how
FP313_Pages.indd 54
it achieved the 138 tonne reduction, and advising what packaging products businesses can use to reduce their own plastic usage. The guide breaks down the 138 tonnes to show what can be done by simply reducing, re-using, recycling or replacing current packaging, enabling companies to improve their environmental status. For example, over 96 tonnes were saved by high-performance, super-strength stretch wrap being introduced in operations around the UK, therefore reducing plastic by up to -50%. Encouraging an attitude of re-using, Kite showed how environmental and economical shredding machines can be – by turning cardboard waste into effective void-fill material for inside packages, they offer an alternative to traditional void fill such as bubble wrap, whilst minimising waste. www.kitepackaging.co.uk

Maximise efficiencies with Hesse Lignal coatings
Hesse Lignal has developed a range of innovative coatings for wood, metal and glass finishes, helping manufacturers maximise production efficiencies, while also reducing costs and wastage to build a greener future. Redwood Innovations is the UK’s leading supplier of coatings from Hesse Lignal, a German manufacturer renowned for its continued efforts to develop coatings that not only deliver a first-class finish on surfaces, but also help manufacturers reduce waste, protect the environment and reduce business costs. As part of Redwood’s Hesse Lignal range, the company stocks a number of highly durable primers, multi-coat and finishing lacquers for solid wood, glass, plastic, metal and wood surfaces. Why Hesse Lignal? With their impressive drying times, high solids content and pot life, Hesse Lignal products
save manufacturers significant amounts of time during the production process. As well as reducing waste with extended pot life, sanding and coating time is also significantly decreased, thanks to a simple range of products with one hardener that can be used in clears, primers and colours. What is more, as a company committed to reducing its negative impact on the environment, Hesse’s coatings are formaldehyde-free and free from aromatic isocyanates. Unlike traditional acid-curing lacquers, Hesse coatings do not contribute to the release of formaldehydes into the environment, therefore ensuring the safety of both sprayers and consumers.
Why Redwood? Unlike some other coating suppliers, Redwood Innovations goes far beyond the selling process. With many years’ experience in supporting manufacturers, Redwood can deliver expert technical advice that not only provides the customer with a suitable product recommendation, but also helps them improve the manufacturing process itself. In addition, all of Redwood’s Hesse Lignal coatings are available for next-day delivery nationwide when ordered before 2pm, providing a first-class customer service experience. 023 9223 3310 sales@redwoodinnovations.co.uk

Sofamaker chooses new woodwaste heater A Sussex sofa manufacturer has invested in a new woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Sofastyle produces a range of sofas, sofabeds and corner units for retail stores, contract furnishers and hotels worldwide from its 8000ft2 workshop in Newhaven, and was already familiar with the money-saving benefits of a woodwaste heater, as it had purchased one from a different manufacturer some years ago. When the time came to replace it, Sofastyle chose one of the heaters from Wood Waste Technology’s range. Sofastyle’s MD Chris Horsnell says: “Whilst our original woodwaste heater wasn’t manufactured by Wood Waste Technology, we regularly used the company to service and provide spares for the heater, due to Wood Waste Technology’s cost-effective pricing. When we realised our old heater needed to be replaced, we contacted Wood Waste Technology about buying a brand new one from them. “Once you’ve experienced the benefits of a woodwaste heater, you never want to be without one again. It’s a great source of heating, and such a cost-effective way to get rid of the large amount of waste wood generated as a result of our manufacturing
processes. We love the service we receive from Wood Waste Technology, and know that the woodwaste heaters they produce are of a quality second-to-none, so it was an easy purchase decision to make.” The MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft, says: “Our heaters have a great reputation in the industry, as every woodwaste heater we’ve ever sold is still in operation today.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of woodwaste heaters, from small, hand-fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of woodwaste heater, and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau – a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters – and for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems, a powerful yet gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com

Patent-pending procedure for protecting pores during open-pore coating by roller application in the parquet and furniture industries. Hesse GmbH & Co. KG from Hamm has filed a patent for a new roller application to coat porous woods with UV lacquers. The difficulty when coating porous woods by roller application is that the pores either take on an unnatural appearance or are not adequately wetted. The desired aesthetic of the pore pattern is lost in the first case. The second case can result in soiling of the pores during use, for instance as parquet. This soiling cannot be remedied using normal cleaning methods. Such issues can lead to costly complaints in the most unfavorable circumstances. The parquet industry in particular has been seeking solutions to this problem for many years.
A patent application has been filed for this developed solution. The procedure does not in principle require any new coating materials or system engineering. Albeit there are proposals for the best equipment in terms of machinery and lacquers to obtain perfect results.
Solid oak wood greatly enlarged under light microscope.

without POREGUARD
Hesse has now developed a fitting solution. This enables the pores to be coated using a special roller application which retains and protects the natural pore pattern.
Hesse-Lignal markets the procedure under the name POREGUARD. Interested companies from the parquet and furniture industries can conclude a license agreement with Hesse to enable them to use this new technology for their own purposes. Hesse GmbH & Co. KG, 59075 Hamm/Germany Tel.: +49(02381)963-00, E-Mail: info@hesse-lignal.de
