Comment As our politicians jostle for airtime to posture and deliver overworked soundbites (fact-checked, of course!) to attract our votes on December 12th, I wonder how often, or if ever, it crosses their minds as to how much depression and damage this uncertain Brexit phase has wrought on British businesses such as the furniture and joinery trade? In the main, both suppliers and manufacturers have been more cautious and less investment-minded during this time, perhaps understandably. So the question is, we will see a sustained post-election improvement in the environment in 2020? A recent CBI report confirmed that manufacturing output had fallen again in the quarter to November with just 13% of manufacturers reporting total order books to be above normal. The report also says that growth has been volatile across the broader economy this year, often driven by businesses shifting activity in response to moving Brexit deadlines – as evidenced by stockpiling and businesses changing direction. But of course the flip side of that coin is that when businesses are able to maximise efficiency using intelligent and highly flexible production techniques, allied with wise resource management, and when they can deliver outstanding customer service, there are opportunities. Manufacturers should also take a look at markets beyond where they are normally active – maybe the hospitality sector for instance where there is always opportunity for flexible manufacturing. Whilst there are examples of manufacturers outperforming the norm, that leaves many in dire need of new options and new ideas. To kick-start our sector, amongst other things, a newly-elected Government will need to commence a considerable house-building programme, and get it under way as quickly as possible. The industry would also benefit from funding flowing more freely in the contract furnishing side of things – more public and private sector investment in anything from offices to hospitals and even hospitality establishments, it all adds volume and opportunity to the furniture and joinery sector. Here’s to trusting/hoping that, from December 13th onward, suppliers and manufacturers can begin planning for a more positive business environment. For many suppliers and manufacturers, a less depressing outlook in 2020 cannot come soon enough.

Filtermist restructure delivers clean air solutions Industrial air filtration specialist Filtermist has restructured its UK business operations to deliver an efficient single-source solution for customers requiring cleaner, safer and more productive work environments. Following numerous acquisitions over the past three years, Filtermist, which recently celebrated 50 years in business, has significantly expanded its product and service offering in dust extraction equipment, air filtration technology and industrial vacuum cleaning products. In order to streamline operations, and improve the turnkey customer experience, eight existing businesses have now been merged into just two – Filtermist International Ltd and Filtermist Systems Ltd. From the company’s modern headquarters in Telford, Filtermist International Ltd will manage the manufacturing function; taking responsibility for production of the extensive portfolio of brands the company has now accumulated. In addition to the oil mist filters
Filtermist’s purpose-built headquarters building in Telford
that the company is renowned for in the metalworking sector, Filtermist International will continue manufacturing established products that are more widely known in the woodworking industry, such as Ecogate extraction control equipment, Gallito spray booths, and the FastClip extraction ductwork system. Manufacturing will continue at the company’s production sites in Dewsbury, Northampton, Telford and Wetherby. With the creation of Filtermist Systems, which has responsibility
for sales to UK customers and management of the company’s project work, the restructure also brings together a wealth of experience from within recentlyacquired companies including Dust Control Systems (DCS), Cades, Gallito and Ecogate, and merges this new reserve of know-how with the expertise Filtermist gained through the acquisition of Multi-Fan Systems, back in 2016. Although now operating under the umbrella of Filtermist Systems, and no longer existing as individual trading entities, the people, products
and services remain the same. The restructure has been designed to improve group synergies across all of the brands to deliver outstanding customer service. “This change is part of a strategic, long-term plan we’ve developed to help us grow globally,” explains Filtermist CEO, James Stansfield. “As well as increasing our product portfolio through the brands we have acquired, we have also increased our headcount by more than 300%, giving us a substantial nationwide presence. We wanted to capitalise on this by ensuring our customers can easily access the best knowledge and the best skills that suit their specific requirements. “There has been a major increase in demand for turnkey solutions, where customers can go to one organisation and have all of their requirements met to a high standard. This is exactly what we are doing with this approach – we are a single-source solutions provider for clean air in industrial workplaces.” www.filtermist.co.uk
Alteri Investors to acquire major group of manufacturing companies Alteri Investors (Alteri), the specialist European retail sector investor, has reached agreement to acquire Blue Group Hold Co Ltd (the group), owner of Bensons for Beds, Harveys Furniture and upholstery & bedding manufacturers Relyon, Steinhoff UK Beds and Formation Furniture, from Steinhoff International Holdings NV (Steinhoff). Harveys and Bensons for Beds, which have been owned by Steinhoff since 2005, trade from 269 stores. The group, which also has four manufacturing sites, as well as five distribution centres in the UK, employs more than 2700 people and has an annual turnover of over £500m. Bensons for Beds, which has a near 70-year heritage, is the largest bed retailer in the UK by store number and the third largest by revenue. Harveys, founded in 1966, is a nationally recognised brand and the largest furniture specialist in the UK by store number. The associated group of manufacturing companies has
FP314_Pages.indd 6
many years of expertise within bedding and upholstery and is the market leader in the production of high quality mattresses, divan sets and furniture. The manufacturer supplies the retail business in addition to a number of renowned high street retailers. With the backing of new owners, management will be able to drive continued improvement in the performance of the group, having already made progress with a series of initiatives launched in 2018. Alteri Investors is fully supportive of the management team, and will work with them to develop the strategy to transform the Group’s profitability. The investment will be made from Alteri’s second investment vehicle, launched in August 2019, with the backing of funds and accounts managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management, Inc. Alteri Investors founder and CEO, Gavin George, says: “This is exactly the type of investment opportunity our second fund was launched to find – trusted retail brands
with strong management and the potential for profitable growth. We are really excited to support Blue Group CEO Mark Jackson and his team on a successful turnaround of the business and are confident that our operational capabilities, alongside the injection of fresh capital, can help to build a market-leading, vertically integrated business with a strong omnichannel presence.” Mark says: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Alteri. Throughout the sale process, they have demonstrated an in-depth understanding of our business and their expertise, not least in digital,
will help turbo-charge our plans to drive the performance of the group.” Steinhoff Group CEO Louis du Preez says: “The sale of Blue Group is the latest in a series of planned divestments by Steinhoff as we continue with our announced strategy of simplifying the Group’s portfolio and deleveraging our balance sheet. We have enjoyed a long association with the Blue Group businesses, and we wish Alteri and the Blue Group management team every success with their future plans.” The acquisition is subject to regulatory approval.

Present problems, positive prospects – a range of perspectives from this year’s International Softwood Conference The message from a packed 67th International Softwood Conference (ISC) was that the global softwood sector faces challenges in an uncertain economic climate. At the same time presenters and delegates from around the world agreed that it has positive prospects ahead. That’s especially the case in construction, where timber is increasingly seen as the material for low carbon, sustainable buildings in an age ever-more focused on tackling climate change and humankind’s wider environmental impacts. The 2019 ISC was held in the historic timber port city and international distribution hub of Antwerp and co-organised by the European Timber Trade Federation (ETTF) and European Organisation of Sawmill Industries (EOS). Belgian textile, wood and
FP314_Pages.indd 8
furniture federation Fedustria was the national host and the event was moderated with energy by ex-UK Timber Trade Federation president Keith Fryer. More than 180 delegates attended from around the world – with 250 people attending the Gala Dinner in the historic Marble Hall of Antwerp Zoo. A truly international line-up of speakers provided a global state of the market overview of, and their take on, issues facing the softwood trade and industry and its outlook. As a backdrop to softwood market conditions, Hans Bevers of Bank Degroof Petercam presented a global economic update. Partly as a result of trade tensions between the US and China, and also the US and the EU, he said, international economic recovery of 2016-18 had given way to declining market confidence. He did not predict recession, but said indicators were to the downside. Speakers from the EU and North America – ETTF president Andreas von Möller, EOS president Sampsa Auvinen, David Calabrigo of Canfor and Marc Brinkmeyer of Idaho Forest Group – addressed conditions in their respective markets. All agreed that high inventories
and continued strong output were issues and had resulted in price depression – with Swedish and Finnish prices, for instance, down 15-20% from 2018-19. Mr Auvinen also highlighted the severity of the spruce bark beetle infestation in central Europe, which, combined with major storm damage between 2017 and 2018, had resulted in a further 120 million3 m of timber entering the raw material pipeline. European and North American speakers said there was growing consensus that climate change was implicated in increased incidence of pests and extreme weather events. As a result, the health of the timber base must be a softwood industry priority. However, they also agreed that, given the resilience and resourcefulness of the sector and the ‘revolution’ in timber and principally softwood construction, the longer term outlook was bright. Engineered timber wood buildings, they said, were being built worldwide to ever-more advanced technical specifications and on an ever-increasing scale. The 35-storey Earth Tower in Vancouver and 18-storey Haut apartment block in Amsterdam were among those highlighted. There were perspectives too from Russia, where there is new government support for timber sector development, and from the MENA region, where political
stability may remain a concern, but a population of 360 million people, half under 24, meant a huge need for new housing and major potential for the international softwood supply sector. Richy Zhang of Zhejiang Materials Industry Senhua Group said the China-US trade dispute was not making life easy for the Chinese softwood sector. But she maintained that increased domestic consumption and economic development of China’s western provinces would grow the market. Delegates heard fascinating insights from researchers into ways to increase forest resilience to climate change, including advanced tree breeding methods, assisted species migration, and greater species mixing. Architects also underlined their ambition to build more in softwood. They were drawn to it by its inherent carbon benefits, but also as they were increasingly understanding the capacity of engineered softwood in particular to deliver commercially competitive, flexible, energy-efficient structures fast. Such buildings, concluded Mr von Möller, provided hugely impactful ‘free advertising’ for the current potential and future possibilities of softwood.

AXYZ Open House success to assist future growth for customers The latest Open House day event organised by the reconstituted AXYZ Automation Group attracted a large number of existing and potential new customers from a wide cross-section of industry, including primarily the woodworking, furniture production, panel processing and sign manufacturing sectors. Companies were able to evaluate the new Infinite CNC router and the latest A-0612 addition to the AXYZ waterjet cutting machine range. Senior AXYZ management personnel and technical application specialists were in attendance to explain the capabilities of both machines and how they could help future business growth and greater market diversification for
customers. The AXYZ Infinite multi-purpose CNC router is built on the legacy of previous AXYZ machines
in terms or outstanding build quality, reliability and increased productivity. With a fresh design concept and a number of
standard and optional machine enhancements, the company claims to have set a new performance benchmark for its class of machine. The new A-0612 waterjet cutting machine is a smaller version of the larger X-Series, offering similar performance capabilities but at a lower cost to meet a market requirement for which hitherto there were limited options. With a 213 x 124cm footprint, it will meet the requirements of any small engineering shop or machining centre used to process a wide range of materials that traditional CNC routing/cutting machines cannot effectively handle. www.axyz.co.uk
Danzer renews health product declaration for veneers International hardwood specialist Danzer has renewed its Health Product Declaration (HPD) for its Vinterio, Linea and Nimbus technical veneers. This standard involves the reporting of material contents of products to guarantee transparency and certainty for procurement officers and end users. Danzer has successfully renewed the HPD for its Vinterio, Linea and Nimbus technical veneers which conform to increasingly strict requirements. The declaration, which lists all of the products’ contents gives designers, procurement managers and consumers peace of mind and provides transparency when selecting quality veneer materials. Danzer has renewed its Health Product Declaration (HPD) for its Vinterio (pictured), Linea and Nimbus technical veneers

Danzer veneer was used as a point of emphasis that created a residential yet familiar feel at the new Fetal Care Special Delivery Unit at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami.
In parallel with the disclosures made in the HPD, Danzer also lists product information on Mindful Materials (www.mindfulmaterials. com), a free platform that collects, vets, and publishes information on the impact of products on environment and human health. Advantages for both users and product manufacturers “The Health Product Declaration and the Mindful Materials platform help manufacturers to obtain our product information quickly and simply, before checking the products against their own requirements. “A growing number of architects and designers are coming to expect transparent declarations for individual components and supply chains, so that they can pursue strategic goals in their green building projects more efficiently,”
Danzer Linea was used for walls, ceilings and furniture at the The NewYork Presbyterian David H Koch Center, a new, world-class ambulatory care facility in Manhattan
explains Danzer product manager Birgit Kocher. “For Danzer, transparency is the essential ingredient in every product and also provides an opportunity for us to optimise our products,” she adds. Tougher requirements for Health Product Declaration The HPD Open Standard calls for precise, reliable and consistent reporting on the contents of building materials that covers environmental, sustainability and health criteria. The declaration is aligned to other standards, including those of the Living Future and the Cradleto-Cradle Products Innovation Institutes, as well as a growing number of building industry rating and certification standards. Health Product Declaration Collaborative is a non- profit association with
more than 200 organisation members representing the full spectrum of the building industry. The amended HPD guidelines stipulate even stricter reporting of emissions, admixtures and trace elements, as well as simplified summaries of contents, materials and supporting documentation. “As an experienced manufacturer, we know that finished products are not made solely from individual materials, but arise from the combination of various ingredients. The new Health Product Declaration now makes it possible for manufacturers, architects and designers to quickly and easily establish whether materials contain potentially problematic substances and simplifies the process of finding alternatives,” Birgit explains. www.hpd-collaborative.org www.danzer.com

IATE unveil two new furniture apprenticeships to provide bespoke training for next generation of craftspeople The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (the Institute) has announced two exciting new apprenticeships for the furniture industry. The first is a bespoke furniture maker, gaining the skills to create tables, chairs, cabinets, and office, kitchen, and bedroom furniture to meet individual customers’ requirements. Apprentices will work with wood, metals, glass, plastics, fabric, finishes and other relevant materials. The other new apprenticeship will train future furniture product developers. They work on the design and rollout of new lines of furniture with manufacturing managers, engineers, purchasers, suppliers and customers. The institute’s chief executive,
Sir Gerry Berragan, says: “I am delighted that the bespoke furniture maker and new furniture product developer apprenticeships are now ready to train people of all ages to the high standards required by this important industry.”

There is a long and noble tradition of furniture making in this country and these apprenticeships will not only help to ensure the craft continues, but also that the training the apprentices receive meets the needs of the industry.” Other employers which helped develop these new apprenticeships – with support from the institute – include DFS, Mills and Scott, Simpsons, Travis Perkins, and Silentnight.
The benefits of buying home-grown panels In this article, Norbord’s industrial sales manager, David Sleigh, offers his thoughts on the healthy state of the supply chain for the industrial market … We’re in the business of producing wood panel products – OSB, MDF and particleboard – and these are used in a multitude of industrial applications, from housebuilding to furnituremaking and packaging. For industrial users, these products are basic raw materials. Without them, their manufacturing process, building activities and ability to deliver to their end-users would grind to a halt. These products are low-carbon, and turn materials once destined for the waste stream into versatile, durable and valuable commodities. Norbord has been producing wood panel products for over 30 years and is the only manufacturer within the UK to produce a zeroadded formaldehyde OSB product (in SterlingOSB Zero), alongside CaberBoard particleboard and CaberWood MDF brands. This means that industrial users here in the UK are not reliant on imports. They can buy domestically produced boards made from wood fibre that is either grown in British plantations or chipped locally from recycled wood, such as pallets.
FP314_Pages.indd 12
For an industrial user, this is of considerable importance because it guarantees availability and relative price stability. Transport costs are lower because the product doesn’t have to travel far to reach the customer (a benefit to the environment, too). In recent years, OSB has enjoyed a huge increase in popularity. Once considered an inferior alternative to plywood, OSB’s quality and performance characteristics are now beyond question. It now derives its own market and is specified by type.
Five years ago, the UK OSB market was 350,000m3/year – today it’s nearer 700,000m3/year, and remains the fastest-growing panel product. The OSB ‘revolution’ is a conspicuous success story, yet the market for MDF and particleboard remains strong too. Demand for MDF – in the shape of skirtings, architraves, MDF mouldings, and use in kitchens and bathrooms – is driven by a strong housebuilding industry. Similarly, particleboard, the go-to option for domestic structural
floors, benefits from housebuilding – as well as a growing demand for mezzanine flooring in the warehousing and retail sectors. The biggest threat to the UK economy today is, of course, Brexit. But, whatever shape it takes – if, indeed, it ever comes to pass – Brexit will have minimal impact on the cost and availability in the UK of OSB, MDF and particleboard. That’s a huge reassurance for our industrial customers, and good news for their end-users. And it’s good for the UK economy, too. www.norbord.co.uk

The positive social and environmental impact of material specification By David Hopkins, managing director, Timber Trade Federation
The role of material specification in helping furniture designers and manufacturers achieve a positive social and environmental impact is something most are now beginning to understand. This is good news. Timber already has the lowest carbon footprint of any mainstream building material, and specifiers can look for a range of chain-of-custody and certification schemes to give assurance over the wider social and environmental benefits their products bring. Certification schemes are familiar across most European forestry production, however their inroads into tropical timber have been less successful. When areas surrounding individual forest concessions are rife with illegal logging, maintaining individual standards to their boundary is difficult, particularly where basic governance and the rule of law is weak, if applied at all. This has meant that, in many cases, designers and manufacturers have simply turned their backs on tropical timber as it is seen as too risky, or too difficult
to ensure it has come from a responsible source. This is where FLEGT comes in. FLEGT – Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade – is an overarching policy framework designed to combat illegal logging and deforestation. Supported by UK Department for International Development (DfID), the European Union, UN FAO and others, the FLEGT Action Plan improves governance, strengthens sustainable and legal forest management, and promotes trade in legally produced timber. In turn, it provides vital revenues for local people to keep the forests standing. FLEGT licences show that a country manages its forests in line with forest management and environment laws, as well as labour and community welfare legislation. It shows that logging rights have been granted according to the law, and that timber is legally harvested. The licences also confirm that products comply with legal requirements for trade and export, and that required taxes and fees are paid, directing vital finance back
into local communities. At present, 15 countries are going through Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPAs) – the formal process of overhauling the legal, social, business and environmental infrastructure to achieve a FLEGT licence. Together, VPA forests cover an area the size of the EU and account for around 80% of EU tropical timber imports. The VPAs engage with communities and civil society on an unprecedented scale, and take years to negotiate and implement. Once the VPA process is complete and been audited by international teams, those countries can export timber under a recognised scheme and which automatically gives their timber a ‘green lane’ as legal under the EUTR. This is why the final letter in FLEGT stands for Trade. Trade is a vital component in addressing the problem of illegal logging. Establishing a credible system of production and licensing which guarantees the provenance of timber means sustainable use of resources, and makes it easier for businesses in the UK and EU to
import legal timber products. Indonesia is the first country to have completed the FLEGT process: compared to previous years it has seen a 60% drop in tree cover loss in primary forests. This isn’t to say that problems do not still exist – the pressures on land use throughout the tropics are immense – but it is a very positive and encouraging sign. Soon other countries will be completing their VPA process and issuing FLEGT licenced timber and products. So, the Timber Trade Federation is working with the support of the Department for International Development to raise awareness among manufacturers and designers about FLEGT, what species and products are available, how these can be used, and to encourage acceptance in your own procurement frameworks. To know more, get in touch. The Timber Trade Federation can help companies learn more about FLEGT and how the materials you choose today can have a positive and lasting impact on the fate of the world’s forests. lkamall@ttf.co.uk www.ttf.co.uk/what-is-flegt

New Cabinet Vision offers enhanced power and control The latest version of the Cabinet Vision design-to-manufacturing solution for woodworkers delivers greater control and flexibility for the machining of part connections, empowering users to better automate and manage every aspect of production. Released by the Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence Production Software business, Cabinet Vision Version 12 features an all-new connection manager that delivers complete control over the machining that occurs where two parts meet, by enabling users to easily define and automate those connections. For instance, if a dado with pre-drills or fixed position dowels with RTA fittings are needed, the connection manager provides the tools needed to define those specific operations, and many more. “When developing Cabinet Vision Version 12, we were focused on giving our users more control over how their cabinets are constructed,” says Cabinet Vision product manager, Chip Martin. “The new connection machining in Version 12 is a game-changer for automating how our customers connect their parts together, whether for cabinets or closets.” This latest version also features a completely redesigned Cabinet Vision assembly manager, which is utilised by engineers to specify construction methods and standardise production. In Version 12, the assembly
manager offers increased flexibility, including the ability to select connections per part, and an enhanced, user-friendly interface. The new connection manager, along with the ability to assign connections in the Cabinet Vision assembly manager, delivers “unparalleled flexibility” for defining and automating construction methods. This development offers greater control over every aspect of connection machining, while maintaining both ease of use and part quality. Improved ease of use in Cabinet Vision Version 12 includes the simplification of defining part differences based upon cabinet class “breakouts” — such as base, upper, tall and others. While these breakouts have been a significant feature since the software’s inception, it required that the user define breakouts for all questions about the part. Enhanced in Version 12, breakouts can now be limited to a specific question for the part, significantly reducing the complexity of defining construction methods. Among this latest version’s interface enhancements is the option to display all contextual – or right-click – menus as radial
menus. Radial menus offer a number of key advantages — most notably speed and ease of use. An additional upgrade to ease of use and efficiency offered with Cabinet Vision Version 12 is the all-new ability to view and move to different rooms while working in elevation view. The room selection option being accessible via the elevation view significantly reduces the number of mouse clicks required to work through a multi-room project. Prior to Version 12, users were required to exit the system’s elevation view and enter the plan view to move to a different room. Cabinet Vision Version 12 offers a direct link to the Leica Geosystems 3D DISTO measurement tool, which accurately captures 3D co-ordinates with the precision needed for project planning. Designed to eliminate unwelcome surprises due to measurement inaccuracies, this direct link with Cabinet Vision enables users to drive the layout of jobs directly on the job site. www.cabinetvision.com

New software version iX 2019 available world-wide for all users Launched in October this year, imos AG made its new software for furniture and design available in 27 languages for 83 countries to all users worldwide. The German version has already been used successfully by users since June this year. imos AG is also expanding its customer support with the new service portal – iX Support Center. imos iX 2019 is the further development of the iX technology series, which was released in 2017. Trends and technologies of digitalisation have influenced the development and offers completely new possibilities from the end customer to the machine. Great focus has been placed on improving comfort and creating functions that speed up daily work. These are just a few highlights: Intuitive room planning benefits from smart contiguous parts that can interact with each other. Automatic snapping helps to insert articles and simplifies article planning. Scenes are not only easier to create, but also enable the isolated display and presentation of furniture arrangements.
Designing furniture has become more comfortable. In addition to a modern user interface, optimising the operating sequences was significant. The iXplorer has been equipped with new functions and a design aid for built-in items has been introduced. The cut-out article allows a standard corpus or component to follow a wall or roof contour or other structural obstacles in a matter of seconds. The drawing output has further been improved and conflicts in the positioning of dimension lines and texts are identified and corrected. Curved components and assemblies are specially evaluated during the creation of the production documents and displayed graphically correct and legible. In the project design management, iX 2019 offers help in change management for larger furnishing projects. In addition to design and construction, fittings can now also be presented in their function. All movable furniture components can be opened and closed with a click – and this throughout in all applications, in the construction as well as at the point-of-sale. From networked applications to the ecosystem The software modules of the new imos iX generation can continue to be used as standalone applications but can also be expanded into networked solutions. This has enabled imos AG to achieve its goal of networking suppliers, manufacturers and end customers with each other: iX Interio, the first ecosystem for furniture manufacturers and
FP314_Pages.indd 18
interior design companies, is creating completely new ways of digital co-operation. Thanks to optimised communication and transaction processes, it enables modern, crosscompany business models. New service functions complete the support range imos AG presents the new iX 2019 functions to its customers in detail using practical examples in the webinars of the imos Online Academy. Customers can access them via the new service portal, the iX Support Center. In addition to further training material, software downloads and updates are also available here. The iX Support Center replaces the old imos Support Center and offers customers new functions such as the online user account, which they can use to manage their data and licences. Because imos AG is changing the security of its software the use of imos iX 2019 also takes place via these online assigned licences, thus replacing the service via the dongle. www.imos3d.com

Frigerio Poltrone e Divani steps up production speed with Lectra Frigerio Poltrone e Divani is known for its fine Italian design, craftsmanship and customisation. However, as market forces are pushing the company to deliver products ever faster, Frigerio sought to accelerate production speed without sacrificing quality or customisability of its products. Lectra suggested implementation of the Vector iX, a single and low ply fabric cutting solution, which was developed with the needs and challenges of on-demand and low volume furniture manufacturers. Replacing its ageing technology with a Vector iX allowed Frigerio to increase fabric efficiency by 5%, reduce nesting time from 14 minutes to two minutes, and reduce cutting and offloading time by 11 minutes. Gianfranco Frigerio, owner, Frigerio Poltrone e Divani, says: “We strongly believe that collaboration with Lectra provides continuous process improvement, in terms of production optimisation, operator efficiency and waste reduction.” www.lectra.com

The Sawteq B-130 – a tenfold increase in capacity for CPA Bespoke Joinery
Homag Sawteq B-130 increases CPA Bespoke Joinery’s capacity tenfold When CPA Bespoke Joinery needed to upgrade its edgebanding capability, the company relied on Homag to once again supply the business with a high quality solution. Established in 2002, CPA Bespoke Joinery combines the knowledge and skills of traditional cabinetmaking with state-of-the-art machinery and innovative products. The bulk of its customers are in the office interiors, shopfitting and building trades. This year, the company will turn over around £4.2m from its two units comprising 10,000ft2 in Bolton, Lancashire. “Our policy has always been to invest in the best woodworking machinery we could afford,” explains CPA managing director, Craig Ashton. He continues, “Homag was the name that always seemed to rise to the top when we first started looking at buying an edgebander and a CNC machine. German engineering has a great reputation and we are very glad we made the decision to purchase those machines from Homag. “The quality of the machines, along with the service and support we have consistently received from them meant that last year, when the time came to invest in a beam saw, we looked no further than Homag.
FP314_Pages.indd 28
“We have known Jon Lawman, Homag’s area manager, for over ten years and during that time he has not only built up an intimate knowledge of our business, but also his candid approach has demonstrated to us that he always has our best interests at heart.” Replacing two table saws “Previously our cutting had been done on our two table saws and the CNC. The problem was, as we grew, the table saws just couldn’t keep up with the volume of work we need to process through them. Another issue was the quality and accuracy of the cut itself which wasn’t giving us the high standards we aspire to. “This led us to talk to Jon about the best solution for our business going forward. As always, Jon came back to us with a proposal that was perfect for our needs; he didn’t try to up-sell us with unnecessary options or higher spec models. He recommended the Homag Sawteq B-130 with the module45 which means we no longer need a sliding table saw for bevel cuts.
21/11/2019 15:29
29 “The module 45 has a stationary saw carriage with a tilting saw blade that can be seamlessly adjusted to angles of 0-46°. Effectively, this now means that we have two machines in one. Not only that, but it can be operated easily by one person and delivers a higher quality cut with less waste. Given we produce a lot of bespoke counters, this feature is saving us a lot of time and money.” Consistency and quality with increased capacity “The Sawteq B-130 has taken our production to a new level. We can now produce the same parts to a consistently high quality and much quicker than before. We’re probably looking at a tenfold increase in capacity with less people. “The saw has provided a far superior cutting set-up to our old system. Also, with the pneumatic lifting arm we’ve bought it means it’s
a one-person operation to handle the processing of jumbo-size sheets on the saw. “The quality and accuracy of the cut is outstanding too and when customers come to visit our manufacturing facilities, you can see how much confidence it gives them in our ability to produce first-class products.” Smooth installation and training “Whenever you have a new machine installed there is always a concern about disruption. The Homag team, however, are fantastic. The install was planned really well; the machine arrived when they said it would and was fully installed and commissioned within four days. “The Homag installation engineers also provided a day’s training on the saw to get our operators up to speed. Our people are used to working with MagiCut software so it didn’t take them long to become proficient on the B-130.”
Exceeded expectations “All in all, the Sawteq B-130 has exceeded our already high expectations. It has freed up labour, significantly increased capacity and will, we believe, pay for itself within 18 months to two years maximum. “Working with Homag UK is always a pleasure. They are a thoroughly professional team and their aftersales service and support is second to none. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them or the Homag machinery and software solutions to any company looking to raise its game,” concludes Craig. For a demonstration or more information about Homag beam saws, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

New stocked range added to dp-limitless Collection
Decorative Panels’ dp-limitless Collection now has even more surfacing options
Autumn marked the launch of three additional ranges to further enhance the stocked dp-limitless Collection available from Decorative Panels Lamination. The new products from Pfleiderer, Rehau and Voice Tec extend the impressive range still further. Taking its offer to more than 90 laminates from Pfleiderer’s DST collection, the new additions include striking unicolours like Orange, Signal Red and Gentian Blue. Grain embossed unicolours have also been added along with embossed wood-grains like Milano Walnut, Ponderosa Pine and Zebrano. Unlike traditional bonding techniques which use cold-pressed emulsion adhesives, dplamination bonds the laminate to the substrate using a high performance PUR adhesive. Not only does this give a higher glue line strength, it offers the additional benefits of being waterproof with excellent low and high temperature
FP314_Pages.indd 30
performance. There is no doubt that Laminate bonded in this way has all-round superior qualities when compared to other methods. Next to be revealed is Rehau’s Rauvisio Crystal range – a collection of on-trend surface materials that’s suitable for both furniture and interior wall cladding applications. Rauvisio Crystal combines the visual appeal of glass with the uncomplicated processing properties of an acrylic, and it comes with the added advantage of being ten times more breakresistant than real glass – and half the weight. It’s also light, UV, scratch and impact resistant. Rehau’s Rauvisio Crystal décors –
Conglomerato Chiaro, Conglomerato Scuro, Marmo Toscana, Marmo Romano, Marmo Bianco, Marmo Nero and Ruggine – have all been added to the dp-limitless offer and all the designs are available in gloss and matt finishes For a unique finish, users are sure to find inspiration from Voice Tec acrylic textured surfaces which have also been added to the dp-limitless range under the Textured Surfaces category. dp-lamination has launched six 1.4mm thick patterns that are supplied in a white matt recoatable finish. Loop, Cactus, Diamantino, Italian Plank, Juta and Giglio are deeply textured and very tactile. These totally unique finishes are ideal for any custom project, and the surface can be used either uncoated or with an over lacquer. The surface can be processed using normal woodworking tools and machinery. We’re not just stuck on glue...
Kenyon Group has teamed up with the Trees For Life charity
“Here at Kenyon Group,” exclaims managing director Ian Kenyon, “we are very conscious about our environmental impact and climate change is quite rightly a hot topic, especially with the floods that have recently hit many parts of the UK. “We have taken a pledge that by the end of 2020 we will have planted 1000 trees here in the UK as a minimum, and we are looking to our valued customers, to help us achieve this. Planting trees is one of the easiest and most sustainable ways that the environment can be positively helped and what could be more satisfying than planting a tree and helping to fight climate change? “To this end, we have teamed up with Trees For Life, the multiple award-winning conservation charity – and never has the proverb ‘great oaks from little acorns grow’ been truer.” Right from the design and inspiration behind the company’s logo representing growth, new beginnings and a love for wild places, Trees For Life works in three key ways: • Saving the forest – planting native trees, nurturing seedlings, helping propagation and encouraging forest regeneration • Giving a helping hand to wildlife – reintroducing missing species, such as red squirrel, to the wild forest • Inspiring people of all ages and abilities to be involved in rewilding to improve their wellbeing and develop new skills. “From 1st December 2019 and the countdown
FP314_Pages.indd 32
Kenyon Group has launched its Plant a Tree pledge – and its customers can join in too
to Christmas into 2020, we are launching our Plant a Tree pledge,” explains Ian, “whereby we will be planting trees based on the value of our customers’ orders and our customers can opt to plant trees alongside us. We will have our own grove so that everyone can see how we are rising to our challenge. “Not only do thousands of wildlife species depend on trees for food and shelter, but trees also have a positive impact on us humans – they improve our mood and help to reduce anxiety
and depression. What could be more rewarding than protecting the environment, caring for and safeguarding the earth for future generations, helping to stop climate change, encouraging wildlife and improving our own wellbeing, all in the course of normal day to day business? So help us plant more trees! “With the help of our customers we will be making a lasting impact on our country’s landscape and the earth on which we all live.” www.gluegunsdirect.com

Lamination synergy
TAKA and WPR supply products and solutions for the wood and furnishing sector. TAKA is a leading producer of HMPUR and its sister company, WPR, produces profile- and panelwrapping machines – together, the two offer a 360° service. Some of the WPR/TAKA solutions have technological advancements: the NWA system, ideal for the wrapping of wood, MDF or chipboard profiles with decorative foil or paper in rolls, is especially suitable for the wrapping of doorframes, cover wires, profiles and frames. The NWM is the single or double system for
the lamination of wood, MDF and chipboard panels up to 2200mm application width with PVC, CPL, PET, PETG, PP, ABS or paper foils. This machine features all the technological advantages of slot nozzle application of hot melt and HMPUR adhesives. WPR’s leading technology is, without any doubt, the Luna. It is a next generation automatic lamination system with maximum set-up times of 8-15 minutes. Thanks to the automatic foil positioning and the exact glue dosing, the Luna also makes it possible to reduce production waste to a minimum.

36 DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT
iWM introduces energy-certified briquetter Following a meeting earlier this year with its local MP to discuss the Government’s new Clean Air Strategy, iWM is the first company to have its briquettes tested on a number of levels by the approved Government’s Energy Testing Station to prove their suitability as a renewable source of energy. The results showed that briquettes have a burning heat and calorific value the same as coal, but eliminate atmosphere pollutants given off when burning fossil fuel and wet wood. The Falach 20 Cube Briquette machine is compact and will produce up to 10-25kg of cube briquettes per hour (dependent on material), producing 30 x 30mm briquettes from all different types of wood dust, including MDF. It is only 103 x 74 x 112cm in size, with a power consumption of 1.1KW/hr, three-phase electric, with running costs of less than 20p/hr. It can reduce dust by as much as 80% in volume, which in turn reduces the cost of waste disposal. The briquettes can then be used either to heat a workshop, or sold to customers to burn on their log burners. Rather than sending waste wood to landfill, the machines offer an environmentally-friendly way to produce renewable energy. There are six models in the Falach range, producing from 20-100kg per hour, at competitive prices. Taking up very little floor space, these can be supplied freestanding, allowing dust to be fed directly into a hopper – alternatively, they can be sited directly under extraction systems, making emptying dust bags a thing of the past. Designed to run all day, installation is simple – just plug in and play. Customers are encouraged to send their wood waste or visit iWM’s demonstration area in its Newark showroom – alternatively, the company is happy to arrange workshop visits and site surveys. 01636 918280 www.iwmachines.co.uk

38 DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT
A future-proof dust extraction solution Cherrymore is a big player in the Irish kitchen and bedroom market, both for consumers and wholesale companies. Production manager Martin McLaughlin was looking for a proper dust extraction solution for their recently expanded warehouse in Donegal Town. After meeting Modesta at the end of 2018, the new filter system was up and running by March 2019. Martin tells us about the collaboration and his experiences so far.
Seeing Cherrymore’s state-of-the art premises at the headquarters in Donegal Town, it’s hard to imagine how Martin and Harry McLaughlin started out 23 years ago, from the garage of their home. “We were both young and enthusiastic and saw a niche in the market,” Martin says from his office. The brothers had to borrow some money to be able to buy their first machines, but soon their business started to grow steadily. After less than two years, they hired their first employee, who still works for Cherrymore today. The company now operates from two warehouses, in Donegal Town and Ballybofey, of 14,000m2 in total alongside five different consumer showrooms in the area. Thanks to Cherrymore’s two-folded focus on both trade and retail, the company can cater for any kind of customer – from a family that wants a new kitchen for their home to a residential development project of 500 kitchens. The brothers still lead the company together, Martin as its production manager and Harry as its commercial manager.

Word of mouth The bigger the factory, the more dust and waste is released on a daily basis and the more important it is to have a great dust extraction solution in place. “A big part of my job is monitoring extraction, taking care of our company’s waste,” says Martin. “We have a lot of saw dust. That wasn’t much of a problem when we were still operating from our garage, but when you get to a certain level and size, waste becomes a real problem if it’s not managed properly.” Before they came in contact with Modesta, Cherrymore was using a filter system that included many add-ons that were put in place over time. “The biggest problem were the unreliable motors: they had to be changed quite
regularly,” explains Martin. He was ready for something new that solved his waste problem in a more efficient way. That’s when he heard about Modesta. The first time representatives of the two companies had a chat was during the W Exhibition at the end of 2018. “I saw many different dust extraction solutions at the fair, but none of them really appealed to me,” says Martin. However, his first impression of Modesta was positive. “The solutions were explained to us in depth and it seemed like the right fit for our factory.” He also received a recommendation from Trade Mouldings, an industry peer who got their first Modesta filter in 2011 and was happy with the solution. “In our industry, word of mouth is very important,” explains Martin.
21/11/2019 15:29
39 Expertise and competence Although a personal recommendation can be very convincing, this was not the only reason Martin opted for a Modesta solution. Their previous system was having problems with its motors, which had to be changed regularly because they were on the dirty side of the filter. In Modesta’s systems, motors are placed on the clean side which results in less motor problems. On top of that, Martin appreciated the environmentally-conscious way Modesta deals with heat disposal: they recover the heat created during production and use it to warm the factory. More importantly, Martin found that all the people involved in the project were very professional. He specifically names Johan, one of Modesta’s mechanics, and Eddy, the project manager. “They are really skilled people. In the end, they do the job; not the company’s management, so we were really happy with the level of competence.” No down-time By March 2019, the complete filter installation was put to use in Cherrymore’s warehouse. The factory didn’t suffer any downtime because most of the installation was done over the weekends and during bank holidays. Also, the old systems were moved outside so they could keep on running. A small hiccup in the CNC ducting due to
FP314_Pages.indd 39
a miscalculation was dealt with fast and appropriately. Martin: “It was brought to our attention in a constructive way, there was no finger pointing, the focus was on how we could solve this as soon as possible. And that worked out: they solved it over a weekend.” Cherrymore’s factory went from a 60,000m3 filter installation with low pressure that was operating at a low speed, to a 100,000m3
installation with 150kWh installed dust extraction power with better pressure and speed. The system currently has only half of its fans operating, making it energy efficient. Martin: “With this filter system, we have the possibility to expand in the future and still be able to keep our factory dust free in an efficient way.” www.modestafilters.com

42 DUST EXTRACTION & WOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT
Supplier Q&A
Forward-thinking safety by AL-KO Since it opened its first extraction technology department in 1988, AL-KO has been committed to manufacturing dust extraction units that meet the most challenging industry requirements but with workplace exposure limits for wood dust changing in the UK from January 2020, what does this mean for the German extraction company? Furniture & Joinery Production put this question and more to Matthias Schalast, area sales manager at AL-KO Therm GmbH How are dust exposure regulations changing in the UK and is AL-KO prepared for these changes? “Next year, the UK is set to change its workplace exposure limits for wood dust. They currently stand at 5mg/³ but from January 2020, this is set to reduce to 3mg/m³ and by 2024, this figure is predicted to drop further to just 2mg/ m³. This is a big step forward for health and safety in the workplace but we design our dust extraction systems to coincide with EN and DIN standards which already work to considerably less exposure limits than this. “For over 10 years, German law has stated that manufacturers must have a maximum exposure rate of 2mg/m³ in the workplace and we’ve continued to focus our research and development in this area to create a complete dust extraction offering that falls well below this threshold. “AL-KO’s Power Unit range is a perfect example of this. The mobile range has been designed and tested in accordance with the European Norm EN 16770, a regulation that was updated in December 2018 to highlight new risks associated with modern manufacturing techniques, machinery and internal extraction systems that boast a volume flow of up to 10,000m³/h. “We created a range that had a guaranteed residual dust content of less than 0.1mg/m³, which means the return air is 20 times cleaner than the requested value UK manufacturers need to meet by 2024.
AL-KO’s high-performance JET filter
“We’ve been able to achieve this impressive figure thanks to the design of the fan, which is sat behind the filter. In short, the fan creates a vacuum which sucks the dust into the filter house, which in turn separates the dust on the filter surface. We use an extremely fine filter material with a low porosity – it’s made from Filter Class M which has a passage level of less than 0.1% – and guarantees this extremely low residual dust level. “This means, when UK manufacturers buy an extraction system from AL-KO, they are not only using a system that meets 2020’s new regulations, it is future proofing the business for the foreseeable future.” How is AL-KO’s dust extraction range tested to stay in line with the latest industry health and safety laws? “All AL-KO dust extraction units are manufactured in accordance with European regulations, national standards and CE requirements. They are also built and certified according to the latest ATEX guidelines. We have our own testing facilities at our headquarters in Germany, which allows us to test technical

values like flow, velocity, the machines, capabilities under pressure and the resistance of the unit’s housing. “Our machines are also independently tested by the trade association every five years and go through intermediate testing at our factory every 2.5 years. This has led us to continually develop our range and tackle the major risks of wood extraction head on.” What are the risks associated with wood dust and how can using an AL-KO unit reduce this ongoing threat in the workplace? “The main risk when extracting wood dust is the threat of explosions and fire. This fact has been well documented over the years and as such, wood dust is classified in dust explosion class ST1. To tackle this issue, all our machines feature an outer shell that is pressure shockresistant to 200mbar m/s as standard. This means our machines are suitable to extract all substances with dust explosion class ST1. “In addition to this, models in our Power Unit range from 250 upwards are equipped with a thermal sensor, which is automatically triggered at 70°C. This shuts down the fan, stops all filter

43 cleaning and triggers the fire extinguishing unit if a risk of fire is detected. Larger units are also equipped with a tank that is filled with water and a special anti-freeze fluid as standard to further reduce the risk. “Regulations also restrict pneumatic cleaning during operation due to explosion and fire risks. In businesses where filter cleaning is required during the operation of the system, AL-KO offers an effective ignition protection system that can be installed in the suction pipe. Features such as these offer ongoing monitoring of the extraction system and have been designed to prevent the risk of fire and explosions in the workplace without restricting performance.” What new health and safety features can be integrated into AL-KO’s dust extraction systems and how might they benefit the operator? “It’s our duty to eliminate operator risk and fulfil the requirements set by the industry. Regulations don’t tend to change over night but we still have to commit to ongoing research to guarantee the quality and safety of our extraction units remains unchallenged. Due to the growing demand of larger extraction units in the furniture manufacturing sector, the risk of fires and explosions have never been higher. “The regulations have been adjusted in accordance with this and as a result, our larger machines come with an automatic extinguishing system as standard and our smaller units, even though it’s not mandatory, come with a built-in extinguisher if required. “New developments also include our Dust Compartment, which was launched at Ligna 2019. It reduces dust exposure when it comes to emptying the dust from inside the housing, whilst our Filling Level Sensor triggers the unit to switch off automatically if the maximum filling level in the chip container is reached, preventing a blockage inside the filter housing. “Our dust extraction systems also come with a Frequency Converter to save energy. This is particularly important when manufactures are using a bigger extraction unit but don’t require maximum performance at all times. Due to the

Frequency Converter, the fan only produces the required flow which saves energy, protects the environment and increases the service life and overall health of the filter due to optimised suction performance.” What can we expect from AL-KO in the next 12 months in terms of design and safety? “At AL-KO, we go above and beyond to make sure our range surpasses health and safety requirements set by all major standard organisations and we will continue to invest in our manufacturing and testing facilities. “Going forward, we will be concentrating on our unit’s noise levels. Our units are already one of the quietest on the market, boasting as little as 69dB(A) and falling well below industry’s recommended noise limits, but we’re looking at ways to improve on this even further. “We’re also looking at ways to make handling even easier, including the ongoing development of our gas spring covers and additional design features that will make one-man maintenance on larger models possible.
The dust compartment reduces dust exposure when it comes to emptying the dust from inside the housing

The filling level sensor triggers the unit to switch off automatically if the maximum filling level in the chip container is reached, preventing a blockage inside the filter housing
“As the industry pushes for more digitalisation, we’re also developing our control unit so our customers can benefit from a simple way to continually monitor ongoing activities and ensure the highest levels of safety are adhered to at all times. “European regulations and national regulations from professional associations provide manufacturers of dust extraction systems with guidelines for the safe construction of these machines. It enables our customers to make a fair comparison of the systems on the market, whist ensuring the dismantling of trade barriers. “The standards also serve to define test principles for dust extractors which means our ongoing commitment to legislation such as this, allows us to offer our customers the very best German-engineered dust extraction solutions that will stand the test of time and the ongoing changes to workplace law in Europe and the UK.” TM Machinery is the exclusive distributor of AL-KO dust extraction systems in the UK. 0116 271 7155 www.tmmachinery.co.uk

SCM interface wins RedDot Award SCM Group, together with NiEW, a business design and customer experience company specialising in industry, have received recognition for their combination of industry and Italian design – their Maestro Active humanmachine interface project won the RedDot Award in the Brands & Communication Design 2019 category. This prestigious global competition is now in its 65th edition, and the jury recognised the high level of design, innovation and creativity behind the ‘made in Italy’ product, following a scrupulous assessment of more than 8000 international projects across the various categories. Maestro Active, which had already achieved industry recognition in February with a special mention at the German Design Award, is NiEW’s concept of a corporate operating system capable of adapting to all SCM’s product lines and devices, with regard to Industry 4.0 and Industrial IoT. Its objective was to create a single interface across the group’s technologies, which not only meets the highest demands of contemporary IT design, but also allows any operator, irrespective of language, background, culture or professional experience, to approach a wide variety of machinery directly, and with confidence. The interface adapts to the user’s characteristics in terms of language, computer literacy and information complexity, providing recommendations for the effective use of the machine. “The success of the Maestro Active visual and interaction design project,” comments Federico Ratti, innovation director at SCM Group, “is a demonstration of how much this system can meet user experience demands made by SCM Group’s client companies, operating across the globe in various commodity sectors – from the

Latest Alphacam promises smarter production As part of Hexagon’s philosophy of supporting data-driven Smart factories, the latest release of Alphacam CAD/ CAM software speeds up how jobs which require several processes are managed. A new job type has been introduced in Alphacam 2020.1 – the Multiple Process Jobs functionality makes it simpler to create jobs and orders which need to be outputted to more than one machine or require any secondary processing at the same machine in Automation Manager. “In the past, users had to create multiple jobs to process complex operations in Automation Manager,” says product manager, Chip Martin. “But now, a single job can be created, containing all the different machines and manufacturing processes that the part goes through.” He highlights an example of machining the top and back of a part. In the latest version of the software, those two processes can easily be worked as a single job. “NC code will simply be created for both of them automatically, which is also the case for additional machines and other processes,” he says. This improvement streamlines how complex manufacturing processes are handled in Automation Manager. “Once the process is defined, and the Multiple Process Job is created, the operator can easily repeat the same complex
The rough/finish of solid faces with Tool Side function has been improved
job many times for different parts,” explains Chip. “Also, the user interface will help show exactly which processes and machines the part will go through.” Several enhancements have been made to Automation Manager’s output file options.
Firstly, the new File Name Configuration dialog creates names from job information, job files, or any custom text. Secondly, a number of improvements to Report Creation include the ability to generate up to four different layouts, which can also be printed. All

the materials being used can be included in one report, and a report can be produced for each material and each nested sheet. “This fine-tune control means users can tailor Automation Manager output entirely to their specific requirements,” says Chip. The rough/finish of solid faces with Tool Side function now supports cylindrical faces to be machined. Planar and cylindrical faces can be combined in a single selection. For solid faces that are perpendicular or undercuts, an active workplane can be used to define the preferred
approach angle (scanning direction). “In the previous release we introduced the ability to machine solid faces directly for rough/ finish and sawing,” says Chip. “This has now been enhanced to allow simple planar faces to be machined without creating new geometry.” Cylindrical faces as well as planar faces can now be selected, and Alphacam automatically finds the best angle for machining them. This calculation is carried out while keeping a fixed angle for the tool in a workplane, guaranteeing that most controllers will be able to support
compensation (G41/G42), and Lead-In/Out generated by Alphacam. “Before this improvement, users had to carry out several steps to machine a selection of faces using the tool side,” concludes Chip. “Now, instead of creating workplanes and extracting geometries, they simply select the faces for machining, and Alphacam calculates the required tool angle and workplane to machine a selection of faces. “This is a real time saver.” www.alphacam.com

Revolutionary road Bruce Lovell, consultant at FIRA International and author of a new guide from the Furniture Industry Research Association, explains the benefits Industry 4.0 can bring. By Bruce Lovell www.fira.co.uk/industry40
Recent media reports have highlighted the UK’s comparatively poor productivity performance and cited this as a hindrance to economic growth. This is particularly relevant as the UK plans to leave the EU, making manufacturing competitiveness even more critical. Experts have identified a number of drivers for the poor productivity. Many are throwbacks to the impact of the financial crisis that started in 2008. An uncertain financial climate has discouraged capital investment in systems and machinery. In addition, with free movement within the EU, labour has become relatively cheap, which has encouraged companies to use this resource, rather than capital investment, to achieve production levels. The UK furniture industry boasts proportionately higher employee numbers than many other sectors and, whilst this is important to Government in terms of helping to reduce unemployment, it also means that productivity per man hour will have a tendency to be low. Alongside this productivity scenario we are entering a new industrial revolution – commonly called Industry 4.0 – where technology can revolutionise production. Productivity within the UK economy, in its simplest form, is a process which converts work into the output of goods or services. In the past, productivity has always trended upwards over time, with more goods and services produced per hours worked, leading to an increase in wages – and, therefore, living standards. All economies historically have shown boom-andbust cyclical fluctuations, and it is not unusual
Machine technology companies, such as SCM, can readily create multi-faceted Industry 4.0 furniture manufacturing businesses
for productivity to fall, as it did in the slump of the financial crisis. However, the UK pattern since 2010 has not followed the usual trend. Since the onset of the recession, productivity growth in the UK has been particularly sluggish. If the pre-2007 trend had continued, productivity would now be ≠16% higher than it actually is. Wages and living standards would also be higher. Whilst high levels of employment can be seen as beneficial to the economy, a full job market won’t be able to provide more growth in the medium and long run, especially if the UK leaving the EU prevents access to a wider pool of employees. As a result, the only way to continuously expand the economy from the supply side is to foster an economy that is able to produce more, but by using the same, or lower, amounts of labour input. We are now experiencing the fourth industrial revolution, centred around the emergence of the Internet. This is the first industrial revolution
rooted in technology (digitalisation) rather than the previous revolutions, which have been started by new types of energy. This transformation (Industry 4.0) represents the fourth revolution in manufacturing, taking what was started in the third, with the adoption of computers and automation, and enhances it with smart autonomous systems fuelled by data and machine learning. Increasing profit in industrial manufacturing can reach a ceiling when things like JIT, lean production and outsourcing production to lowercost base countries becomes exhausted. In companies that have exploited these concepts, Industry 4.0 becomes a promising solution to progress further decreases in production costs, logistics costs and Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ). Other advantages connected with the concept include shorter New Product Development (NPD) processes and time to market, which can enable more complex custom manufacturing, without increasing mass production costs.
“Labour has become relatively cheap, which has encouraged companies to use this resource, rather than capital investment, to achieve production levels”

AMS reduces its greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 8.5 tonnes of CO2
AMS has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions thanks to installing a full LED lighting system in its impressive showroom, office, workshop and storage areas. Twelve months ago AMS, The Wadkin Bursgreen trademark owners wanted to be more ecological and take more care of the environment – so it started to change all of its lights to a full LED lighting system. One year on and they have achieved their objective, and they can’t be better pleased. AMS has received a certificate showing it has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 8.5 tonnes of CO2, which is a carbon saving of approximately 63% on their lighting. That’s the same weight as two African bush elephants! AMS director Stephen McGloin says: “The environment has always been important for us as a company and we wanted to contribute in any way we could. In addition to the LED lighting, we have an ecologic heater in our showroom which heats three workshops from a waste wood furnace.” One of the targets for this project is to measure the carbon emission reduction as a result of measures that are installed with the help of a Green BELLE grant. For LED lighting, AMS calculate this from the wattages of the preexisting and replacement lighting, as well as an estimate of the usages times, rather than from energy bills. This is not a one-off reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and AMS will continue to make similar annual savings as a result of the
FP314_Pages.indd 52
new lighting that it installed a year ago in its installations. Stephen continues: “As general advice, we would like to say that all the companies in the woodworking industry should think about this type of system to take care of the environment as much as possible.” To find out more about AMS, its range of Wadkin Bursgreen machines, used machinery, training courses, spare parts and tooling, contact the company. 0844 844 9949 sales@advancedmachinery.co.uk www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

Axminster supports Young Furniture Makers Exhibition The Young Furniture Makers exhibition this year returned to the City of London on Wednesday 9th October. Organised by The Furniture Makers’ Company, the exhibition gives industry the opportunity to connect with young, creative talent. Going forward, these young people are destined to be the designermakers of the future, looking to make an impact on the sector. Axminster Tools & Machinery was the main sponsor of the exhibition, assisted by supporting partners Anti Copying in Design, Celtheath Contract Furniture, The January Furniture Show and The Furniture Ombudsman. Investment in wood waste heater saves company money on heating and waste disposal A UK fabrication company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating and waste disposal bills. Pinnacle Worksurfaces was established in 2003 and manufactures and fabricates a wide selection of acrylic solid surfacing products, such as Corian, Tristone, Hanex and others. Managing director, Paul Probert, became aware of wood waste heaters when visiting an exhibition, and realised it could be just the solution his business needed. Pinnacle Worksurfaces’ 3500ft2 premises in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, has no workshop heating. As well as being uncomfortable to work in cold conditions, the freezing temperatures could also cause issues with production, as the adhesives would take longer to set, or wouldn’t set properly if the workshop wasn’t warm enough. In order to keep the workshop warm on very cold days, the business would use a diesel heater, which would cost around £150 a week to run. In addition, the business generates a substantial amount of wood offcuts, including soft woods and MDF, so a considerable amount of money had to be spent hiring skips to dispose of the waste wood.

17/04/2018 08:35
Paul Probert explains: “Once we realised that the wood offcuts could provide free heating for the workshop, saving us money on waste disposal and heating bills, it just seemed logical to invest in one. We contacted Wood Waste Technology for more information and a quote, and worked out that with all the savings we’d be making, we’d soon get a return on the investment.” Pinnacle Worksurfaces ordered a WT5 heater, which Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers installed late last year. Paul continues: “We’re delighted with the heater – it’s excellent value for money. It’s lovely having such a warm workshop, and we’ve more than halved the amount of skips we need to hire, as much of the waste can now be burned in the heater. The heater is really easy to use, and the team at Wood Waste Technology has been exceptionally helpful. We’d advise any business that generates a substantial amount of waste wood to investigate the benefits – we’re glad we did!“ Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says: “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to help Pinnacle Worksurfaces save money on heating and waste disposal.” 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com
