Elsewhere we look at surfacing, sanding and adhesives from a range of well-known suppliers and manufacturers. There’s also a trio of installation articles, as well as products and updates from across the industry. With the global pandemic, we are all very much in uncharted waters, and at Furniture & Joinery Production, we will, to paraphrase Simon & Garfunkel, try to be a (communication) bridge over troubled water at this time – subject, of course, to whatever restrictions we need to abide by. With many of our readership being small and micro-businesses, we would like to remind everyone to follow the Government advice at this time – namely, to stay at home, only going outside for food, health reasons or work (but only if you cannot work from home). If you go out, stay 2m (6ft) away from other people at all times, and wash your hands well as soon as you get home. Do not meet others – even friends or family (you can spread the virus even if you don’t have symptoms). As Gearing Media Group is being furloughed at least until the end of April, this will be the last issue until further notice, but we look forward to getting back in the saddle as soon as Government guidelines permit us to do so. In the meantime, please consider carefully the health and wellbeing of yourself and others.

Coronavirus advice for employers

Tina Chander The Government has confirmed that statutory sick pay will now apply from the first day off work, not the fourth, as greater efforts are made to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). Understandably, this decision has raised more questions about sick pay and working from home, writes Wright Hassall’s employment law expert, Tina Chander. From an employer’s perspective, an important first step is to ensure the official advice is taken on board and shared effectively throughout the workforce. This includes designating an available space as an ‘isolation room’, so sick employees can remove themselves from the proximity of other colleagues before contacting 111 for further advice. Other steps to take include: updating the contact numbers and emergency contact details of employees; ensuring managers are aware of the symptoms of the virus; disseminating information

across management on issues such as sick leave and sick pay; ensuring facilities for regular and thorough washing of hands are in place; and dispensing hand sanitisers and tissues to employees.

The Government has stated that if NHS 111 or a doctor advises an employee or worker to self-isolate, then they should receive any statutory sick pay due to them (or contractual sick pay if this is offered by the employer).

Thorough handwashing has been recommended as an effective way to prevent the spread of coronavirus, so employers should encourage staff to take their time in doing so, without fear of being penalised.

In some cases, employees may be able to work from home while in selfisolation. However, in many cases, if an employee cannot attend their place of work, they will be unable to work.

If an employee becomes unwell If an employee exhibits the symptoms of the virus, they should isolate themselves immediately, either by going to the designated room or going home. Uncertainty over the seriousness of the virus, the exact nature of the symptoms and concern about the situation regarding issues such as sick pay may lead to some employees coming to work despite having contracted the virus, without necessarily feeling unwell. If this does happen, an employer should contact the local Public Health England (PHE) health protection team, and they will discuss the details and outline any precautions which should be taken. The position on sick pay If an employee is off sick with the virus, then the legal situation regarding sick pay is the same as it is with any other illness – however, the employee is now entitled to statutory sick pay from the first day of work, not the fourth.

Companies to receive threemonth extension period to file accounts during COVID-19 Businesses will be given an additional three months to file accounts with Companies House to help companies avoid penalties as they deal with the impact of COVID-19. From 25th March, businesses are able to apply for a three-month extension for filing their accounts. This joint initiative between the Government and Companies House will mean businesses can prioritise managing the impact of coronavirus. Under normal circumstances, companies that file accounts late are issued with an automatic penalty. As part of the agreed measures, while companies will still have to apply for the three-month extension to be granted, those citing issues around COVID-19 will be automatically and immediately granted an extension. Business secretary Alok Sharma says: “We have outlined a business support package on an unprecedented scale, backing companies and their employees through these challenging times. But it is important that our support is not limited to financial assistance. “We are determined to help businesses in any way we can, so that they can focus all their efforts on dealing with the impact of coronavirus, and this new offer of a three-month extension for filing accounts is part of that.”

FP318_Pages USE.indd 4

Ultimately, there is no obligation on an employer to allow an employee to stay away from work and, if the nonattendance causes issues or extends beyond an emergency precaution, then an employer is entitled to take disciplinary action.

No time to be divisive Employers must also take steps to ensure that no members of staff, customers or suppliers are treated differently because of their race or ethnicity. It may be appropriate to remind staff that jokes and banter, even if lighthearted, may easily slip over the line to become unlawful harassment and/or discrimination, for which an employer may be liable. Taking reasonable steps can include having well-publicised diversity and harassment policies, and training all staff on the issue. Managers must also be trained about their responsibility to identify and prevent discriminatory behaviour.

Chancellor gives support to millions of self-employed individuals Rishi Sunak has announced a scheme to support the UK’s self-employed affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Millions of self-employed individuals will receive direct cash grants though a groundbreaking UK-wide scheme to help them during the coronavirus outbreak, the Chancellor has announced. In the latest step to protect individuals and businesses, Rishi Sunak, right, has set out plans that will see the selfemployed receive up to £2500 per month in grants for at least three months. Millions of people across the UK could benefit from the new Self-Employed Income Support Scheme, with those eligible receiving a cash grant worth 80% of their average monthly trading profit over the last three years. This covers 95% of people who receive the majority of their income from self-employment. This brings parity with the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, announced by the Chancellor last week, where the Government committed to pay up to £2500 each month in wages of employed workers who are furloughed during the outbreak. Cleaners, plumbers, electricians, musicians, hairdressers and many other self-employed people who are eligible for the new scheme will be able to apply directly to HMRC for the taxable grant, using a simple online form, with the cash being paid directly into people’s bank accounts. Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “Selfemployed people are a crucial part of the UK’s workforce who’ve understandably been looking for reassurance and support during this national emergency.

“The package for the self-employed I’ve outlined is one of the most generous in the world that has been announced so far. It targets support to those who need help most, offering the selfemployed the same level of support as those in work. “Together with support packages for businesses and for workers, I am confident we now have the measures in place to ensure we can get through this emergency together. “The scheme will be open to those with a trading profit of less than £50,000 in 2018-19 or an average trading profit of less than £50,000 from 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19,” concludes the Chancellor. Self-employed individuals are already benefitting from a series of measures announced by the Chancellor to boost household incomes, and will be able to access these while the new scheme is being rolled out. These include a strengthening of the welfare safety-net with a £7b boost to Universal Credit, income tax and VAT deferrals, £1b more support for renters, and access to three-month mortgage holidays.

JJ Smith wins North West Family Business Awards Along with representatives from family businesses from North-west England, JJ Smith attended the North West Family Business Awards 2020 and came away with two awards – the People’s Choice: Merseyside, and the Judges’ Choice. Hosted by food writer and presenter, Nigel Barden, and held under the wings of Concorde, the event was dedicated to celebrating the sector in the region. JJ Smith is proud to win the People’s Choice Merseyside award and would like to thank everyone who voted. The company was “blown away” to win the Judges’ Choice award too. The judges said: “The judges felt they wanted to recognise one particular family business for the incredible work that they do – not only for their community and young people in their area, but also for their employees who are also multi-generational, a company with heritage but also with a bright sustainable future ahead of it.” Sue Howorth, founder and co-director of The Family Business Network and The North West Family Business Awards, said: “This has been a fantastic event, which really has celebrated the great work family businesses do, which enriches their communities and the country’s economy.

“It was a tough job for the judges as the standard of entries was so high. The support from the public who helped select the winners of the People’s Choice and Employee of the Year was outstanding. We had over 4537 votes for the People’s Choice!” Jacqui Jackson from Thomas Jardine & Co and 2020 North West Awards chair of judges added: “The number and quality of applications from across the North-west have been outstanding. The businesses are clearly proud to be family businesses, and the detail in many

of the entries has demonstrated that they are very progressive and innovative.” Rachael Baker, JJ Smith’s commercial director, says: “Well done to everyone at JJ Smith for making us the successful family business that we are! We pride ourselves on being a fourth-generation family company so we are more than thrilled to receive these awards. It was a great evening! The North-west has some fantastic family businesses so to have won is a real honour.” www.jjsmith.co.uk

Gowercroft Joinery appoints new commercial sales manager

Industry charity reaches out to affected employees

Multi-award-winning winning timber window and door manufacturer Gowercroft Joinery has appointed a new commercial sales manager to spearhead its B2B sales growth nationwide. With a proven track record in UK and international sales, Joe Grimley brings over seven years of commercial experience in the construction industry. Formerly commercial sales manager at a Yorkshire-based regional joinery company, he has held key positions including business development manager at a national timber and doors manufacturer, as well as regional operations manager at a major chain of builders merchants. In his new role, Joe will head up the new commercial division at Gowercroft Joinery, which has been set up to develop stronger professional relationships with architectural practices, main contractors and small- to mediumsized builders across the country. The new division will serve the company’s growing portfolio of commercial clients, providing expert advice and technical support through the entire process from the initial site survey, design and product specification and quotation to delivery and aftersales service. Joe says: “I am thrilled to be joining Gowercroft. The company really is a dynamic force within the windows and doors market, pushing boundaries and redefining the marketplace with its genuinely innovative range of products. “As I have a great passion for timber windows and doors, it is exciting to be part of a company that is also so committed to customer service and delivering on

Kite Packaging exceeds plastic reduction target, achieving 207t reduction At the start of 2019 the employeeowned packaging company set a target to reduce its usage – and its customers’ usage – of plastic by 120t. Having recently completed an audit of the project the company has announced the final figures for 2019 are an impressive reduction of 207t. The success of the campaign comes after a successful year of new product launches, with a key focus on not only offering products that use less plastic but also ranges that are alternatives

to plastic or products that can be reused. In support of new product initiatives, Kite also continued to offer free audits through its specialist support divisions, for any business seeking to explore environmentally friendly packaging solutions. With a strong start to 2019, seeing the launch of its dynamic gummed paper tape dispensing machine, its range expansion of paper tapes, the launch of its paper padded envelopes and the development of its sugar cane bio film, to name a few, Kite demonstrated a firm commitment to plastic reduction and elimination. Kite’s new product drive has continued into 2020, and the firm recently increased its paper bag offering to include twist handle paper carrier bags, tape handle paper carrier bags, brown paper bags, strung paper counter bags and paper mailing bags. www.kitepackaging.co.uk.

There are a whole host of new features planned for the UK’s number-one event for the furniture and joinery manufacturing industry when it opens its doors at the NEC in September. Speaking about the influx of new brands and improvements to the W Exhibition 2020 offering, event director Nickie West says: “We are hugely encouraged by the support that we have received across the industry for the W Exhibition 2020. “Alongside loyal and returning exhibitors, the influx of debut brands reinforces the fact that we are broadening the appeal of the show and that these brands see the value in the W Exhibition as a platform to engage the market with their products and services. “We are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the W Exhibition 2020 is the best show yet. We have invested an unprecedented amount of money into making improvements, from expanding our internal team to help make the exhibitor process slicker through to increasing our marketing budget and investing in research to ensure that we are reaching a

wide and accurate audience. “We’re also making improvements to the face of the show in the form of new features. We are committed to securing long-term success for the show.” The W Exhibition 2020 line-up includes almost 300 exhibiting brands who will showcase the very latest products and materials across the four-day event. TM Machinery & TM Services – committed to its customers Matt Pearce, MD of TM Machinery & TM Services, talks to Furniture & Joinery Production about how his business is set up to work with its customers during this uncertain time. TM was originally founded to service the industry. How is this helping the business during this time? Service is at the heart of everything we do and because of this, we have a dedicated team on standby to help our customers with whatever problems they face. Offering remote technical support and guidance is what we do as a business. Our technical team and service engineers know our product ranges inside out and back to front and because of this, we have decades of experience resolving technical issues remotely. Our approach to service significantly reduces the number of revisits our engineers need to undertake. This will help greatly during this time. What solutions are TM offering to those with technical and maintenance issues during this time?

We are continuing to offer a remote service to give our customers peace of mind during this time of uncertainty. Our team is available on the phone or via email during normal working hours and is experienced in talking through a range of technical and administrative questions. Will spare parts or deliveries be affected in any way? We offer a full parts service and have a wide range of parts in stock and available for delivery. There is currently no interruption to the supply of spare parts and the shipping of goods hasn’t been restricted. Plus, because of the volume of spares we hold in stock, we’re confident we can cope with an interruption of two to three months. Finance is a huge worry for all businesses and individuals

at this time. Is TM offering any additional support to its customers? We are all in this together and we realise that people’s cashflows will be affected in different ways. If you are struggling, you need to tell us about it as quickly as possible. Please don’t shy away from this. The sooner we know about the problem, the quicker we can help you. We’ll assess each customer on a case-by-case basis and be as flexible as we can to find a solution. Don’t suffer in silence. For those waiting for a machine to be delivered by TM Machinery, will their delivery date be affected? We work closely with our customers throughout the sales and installation process and keep them informed every step of the way. This won’t change. For those companies that want to change their installation date, we are happy

FP318_Pages USE.indd 12

to hold machines in our warehouse until they are ready for them to be installed. We have the capacity to do this if required and feel that giving customers this option is essential in the current climate. What words of support and encouragement can you give to your customers and the industry during this time? I think it’s important for our customers to know that we are not going anywhere and will be here if and when they need us. We have a framework in place that allows us to work remotely with minimal disruption to our business and we are continuing to work in this way. We are committed to our customers, our team and the industry so, while it’s uncertain how long this will last, you can be certain that TM will be here for you now and in the future. 0116 271 7155 sales@tmservices.co.uk

In short, this means we’ve been able to modify our business practices quickly so we can focus on the important thing – our customers. What actions are being taken by Weinig UK to continue offering

FP318_Pages USE.indd 16

the best service it can to its customers? Without our team, there is no Weinig UK. That’s why our staff’s health is paramount during this time. We are following the advice given by the Government and World Health Organisation and, if these continue to change, so do our processes. We have put a strategic framework in place to accommodate this that we believe will allow us to continue to offer a comprehensive service to our customers. What support are you offering to customers with technical and maintenance issues? We don’t want our customers to be penalised for doing the right thing. That’s why we’re rolling out free remote assistance to all Weinig UK

customers. This means, regardless of the aftercare package you have with us, our UK technical hotline, UK online support services and UK customer service team will be available on the phone, on Skype or on email to help you resolve any issues you may face. This remote service will be able to help our customers navigate technical or maintenance issues, with engineers also being able to run diagnostic checks remotely, eliminating the need for visits.

If customers are struggling financially, what should they do? The most important thing our customers need to do if they are experiencing any financially difficulty, is talk to us. We are here for them and we don’t want anyone to struggle in silence. We want to understand the problems businesses may be facing and help to resolve the issues the best we can. It’s in our interest to help our customers through these challenging times. Remember, communication is key, and we’re here for you every step of the way. For those customers expecting a Weinig or Holz-Her machine to be delivered in the coming days or weeks, what advice do you have for them? We are continuing to keep in contact with our customers during this time and we will share updates as regularly as possible. If customers have any concerns regarding their order or the installation of their machine, our customer service team is on hand to answer any questions. What advice can you give to your customers during this time? We are here to support you. We know that by working together, we can overcome the difficulties we all

FP318_Pages USE.indd 17

face in these uncertain times. We find ourselves in unprecedented times but this doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of these quieter periods. Use this time to think strategically about your future and engage in discussions with Weinig UK remotely about your company’s future. We don’t just sell machinery. We offer advice to help our customers improve their manufacturing cycle and productivity rates. Regardless of where we are in the country, you can still have a detailed conversation with a member of our team about the best way forward for your business without any sales pressure whatsoever. The industry will bounce back from this and we want to ensure that all Weinig UK customers hit the ground running when it does! www.weinig.co.uk

New start-up Intrinsic Works partners with Homag UK

Photography by Pranav Kukreja

Based in the heart of Leicestershire, Intrinsic Works is a start-up furniture manufacturing company specialising in bespoke bedroom, home office and media furniture for the trade. The company began trading from its 6000ft2 Stoney Stanton facility in November 2018 and has achieved remarkable results in a very short time. It will hit a turnover of around £700,000 in its first full financial year – some +40% up on target. From the outset, Intrinsic Works’ goal was to produce premium products, and to do that meant investing in the very best machinery available. Founder and MD Steve Chaney-North takes up the story: “For the venture to succeed, we knew we had to hit the ground running and have woodworking machinery that we could rely on to produce first-class quality products consistently. “We bought a plot of land and had a purposebuilt facility designed and constructed to house the business. Selecting the right machinery partner was possibly the most important part of our strategy. If we got it right we had a fighting

chance, but if the machinery let us down there was a very strong possibility we’d sink without trace. Researching the market “Given the high stakes, we approached the three leading brands in the industry, quickly narrowing down the choice to two, one of which was Homag. After in-depth discussions we finalised our decision and it was the reputation of the Homag brand that won the day. We didn’t want to risk settling for second best, and, of course, the quality of the Homag product speaks for itself. “From our first discussion, Matt Long and

Simon Brooks made us feel confident and relaxed about what, for us, was a very significant investment. We explained what we needed the machines to do and they came back with recommendations to address our requirements. “Initially, we had asked for an edgebander, a beam saw and a vertical drilling station. Matt came back, however, and asked if we had considered a CNC nesting machine rather than the saw-and-drill combination. “To be honest, we hadn’t thought about that option. When they explained what the nesting machine could achieve and the automation it would bring to our business, we were totally sold on the idea.

The Homag Edgeteq S-390 at Intrinsic Works

Edgeteq S-390 and Centateq N-500 “The package we agreed included the Edgeteq S-390 model 1860E edgebander and the Centateq N-500 CNC nesting machine. Homag was really helpful in finalising a deal we could afford. They introduced us to a finance company that provided a cost-effective five-year agreement. “The Edgeteq S-390 is a cracking machine. The quality of the finish is absolutely first class – it is fast (20m/min) and completely reliable. We did think about a return system, but as most of our work is batch size one production, it didn’t make sense for us. “As for the nesting machine, that was such a good decision. Basically, the CNC performs two operations in one pass – cutting the panels and drilling them with incredible accuracy. “What’s more, it is totally automated. We put the jumbo panels on the machine using a forklift truck and then the machine takes over, cutting, drilling and offloading automatically. “Not only does it save us around -40% time wise, but it also requires one less operator, reduces energy usage and, from a health and safety aspect, avoids any manual heavy lifting. Homag – quality products, first-class service “Both machines deliver exceptional performance. The accuracy is amazing and totally consistent, whilst the quality of finish is second to none. Additionally, once you’ve been trained, they are fast and easy to operate.

FP318_Pages USE.indd 19

“To maximise performance we invested in Homag’s e-solutions and MagiCut software. This enables us to do all the bespoke programing in the office and then send the information down to the shopfloor where the machine operators just have to hit the ‘go’ button. “Naturally, with technically advanced machinery, there will always be the occasional issue. The service support from Homag, however, is outstanding, and they get us back up and running in no time at all. Giving Intrinsic Works’ customers the confidence to order “As a new company, we knew the margin for error was slim. Our approach was to target the fitters and make sure that every product we produced for them was accurate, easy to install and fantastic quality. “We made their lives easy, and consequently saved them time and money. Word of our performance soon filtered up to senior management of the retailers we supply who now had first-hand proof of our abilities and performance levels. Unquestionably, the Homag machinery has been instrumental in achieving this success, and I can’t recommend them highly enough,” concludes Steve. AMS helps Steve Burt Woodworking improve accuracy and reduce waste Steve Burt bought a CNC panel saw from Advanced Machinery Services after AMS’ sales manager invited the company to visit his showroom.

A few years ago, MD Steve Burt was running his company when AMS sales manager Brett Pruce visited his workshop in Oadby. Steve explained what he was looking for, and Brett invited him to visit the AMS showroom in Skeffington for a demonstration. Steve says: “I went to AMS to purchase a manual panel saw and whilst I was there, I saw all the other machines on display and decided to buy a Wadkin Bursgreen P3200 CNC panel saw, which was great. The AMS showroom is excellent to see, compare and have a demonstration of woodworking machines.”

Steve Burt Woodworking is a Leicester-based company with over 35 years’ experience of making bespoke furniture, cabinets, kitchens, bedrooms, doors and occasionally front doors in wood for individuals and commercial customers across the country. Steve continues: “Before we got the Wadkin Bursgreen P3200 CNC panel saw, we were working with a manual panel saw and there was more room for error. With our new CNC panel saw we work more accurately, and it makes our job easier. After one month working on this machine, we realised it was the right choice, and we saved so much time, which is the biggest asset in our business.”

FP318_Pages USE.indd 20

Service was a key part of Steve’s decision to buy machines from Advanced Machinery Services. He says: “I chose AMS because of the service. You can feel confident getting a machine from them because they have a very good service department backing up the machines, as well as tooling, spare parts and training departments. The whole service was amazing, and the entire process was comforting – they made my life that bit easier. “Further, when you are making really accurate panels, it has to be perfect or you’re going to get gaps – so I would recommend a Wadkin Bursgreen CNC panel saw to anyone.” 0844 844 9949 www.advancedmachinery.co.uk

The Sawteq B-300 with intelliGuide – Homag’s intelligent machine operator assistance system

Homag delivers quality and service to Rokitch Kitchens In 2017 Minesh Mistry purchased a small joinery company in northwest London, renaming it Rokitch. His goal was to create a professional, highquality kitchen company serving both the trade and public with German-style kitchens. “When I bought the business it had very old woodworking machinery,” explains Minesh. “Producing kitchen components was painstaking, and the quality was nowhere near the level I was looking to achieve. “My aim was to attract bigger trade customers and higher-end consumer projects. To do that I knew I had to invest in the best woodworking equipment I could afford, that would consistently deliver premium quality products. Investing in the best “As a small company, I had to make sure that whichever equipment I decided to buy, it would be right for the long term. I couldn’t afford to make a wrong decision.

The Homag Edgeteq S-240 edgebander at Rokitch Kitchens

“Consequently, I evaluated a wide range of suppliers in my search for the right beam saw and edgebander. The W18 exhibition was a great opportunity to see a number of potential suppliers under one roof and compare solutions. “My first impressions of Homag were good – as the market leader, its reputation for German engineering excellence gave me confidence. “From the outset, I got on well with Paul Mosley, Homag UK’s area sales manager. He quickly got to grips with our particular needs and was able to recommend options for both the beam saw and edgebander. “In addition to Paul’s professionalism, Homag’s presence in the UK was comforting. They are a large, financially sound business with their own engineering team who are always on hand to support. You just don’t get that level of care from brands that are sold through distributorships. Homag Sawteq B-300 and Edgeteq S-240 “Once we placed the order for the Sawteq B-300 and Edgeteq S-240 machines, Homag took over. As you would expect from the ever-efficient Germans, the installation was thoroughly planned and executed, with their engineers training our operators on-site. “With the saw I opted for the intelliGuide system, the label printer and the MagiCut software. The intelliGuide system uses coloured LED lights at the cutting line so operators can see immediately if a part has been fully processed, needs to be cut again or is waste.

“The label printer produces customised labels directly at the saw. This, in conjunction with MagiCut, delivers labels for each part, with printed instructions for the next process. “The Edgeteq S-240 edgebander has both PUR and EVA gluing options which provide a consistent premium quality finish. Overall, it’s a really versatile and reliable edgebander that has helped transform our business. Delivering tangible results “The difference these two machines have made to our capabilities is immense. Previously it would take around 4½ hours to cut the parts for a complete kitchen. Now I can do it in 45 minutes – that’s a +600% improvement! “What’s more, the saw cuts more accurately and squarely, whilst the edgebander gives a clean, professional finish. This has enabled us to take on challenging trade work and higher-end private commissions with complete confidence. “In time alone, the edgebander has already paid for itself since its installation in May 2019, and we expect the saw (bought in October 2019) to give us a return on investment within two years. “These purchases are the first I have made from Homag UK and they certainly won’t be the last. The entire team are very approachable – they always take calls, give advice and help as quickly as they can,” concludes Minesh. The Homag Centateq E-310 CNC processing centreassistance system

Homag launches powerEdge Pro Duo CNC gluing technology With more than 30 years’ experience under its belt, Homag has successfully positioned itself as a market leader in the design and manufacture of innovative CNC machining solutions. Further enhancing its popular CNC range, Homag has now announced the launch of its powerEdge Pro Duo gluing technology. Available on Homag’s Centateq E-310, E-500 and E-700 models, the powerEdge Pro Duo gluing unit takes shaped edgebanding on a CNC to a new level. Previously, CNC machines were only available with either glue or zero-joint technology – the powerEdge Pro Duo, however, combines both technologies within one innovative unit. The powerEdge Pro Duo – one unit for all Using exact edge tracing and a feed roller with direct travel measurement, the new powerEdge system guarantees that edging tape is applied precisely from start to finish. The speed, temperature and contact pressure are defined at every point along the contour, with no restrictions on butt joint locations. The pressure roller applies the edge to the workpiece with a precise amount of force for a consistently even finish. The addition of 360° gluing ensures even the smallest of components are edged to perfection, states Homag. With defined temperature technology, the powerEdge Pro Duo system produces perfectly finished workpieces without complicated programming. The automatic adjustment of the gluing temperature can be managed through intelligent software programmes, including Homag’s woodWOP, along every point of the contour. The easy and efficient programming of powerEdge Pro Duo allows users to achieve impressive results from the first workpiece without needing additional adjustments or test pieces. The powerEdge Pro Duo unit also allows the user to freely switch between conventional hot-melt glue and pre-coated edges or zerojoint edging on one workpiece. The combined

FP318_Pages USE.indd 26

The new Homag powerEdge Pro Duo gluing technology – users can switch between glue or zerojoint technology on CNCs

operation is possible without the need for changeover, as the hot air nozzle tool used for reheating hot-melt glue also activates the functional layer of a zero-joint edge. The perfect pair – Centateq E-310 and powerEdge Pro Duo Launched at Homag UK’s recent Open House, the powerEdge Pro Duo gluing unit proved a hit with visitors when demonstrated on a Centateq E-310. Homag’s Centateq E-310 is a universal CNC processing centre which excels at edgebanding on shaped parts. The compact machine offers a high level of performance with an arrangement of units and a wide choice of configuration options for processing spindles, drilling gears and toolchangers. With an impressive array of machining features as standard, the Centateq E-310’s basic packages include its powerful four- and five-axis routing spindles, travelling toolchangers for fast

tool changes and a console table with highprecision liner guides and insertion aids. The Centateq E-310 makes operation easy with a large viewing window allowing all essential functions to be directly in sight. As well as open viewing processes, the table is freely accessible with no fences restricting access for set-up or loading. Operators also have full access to the front side of the machine to carry out drill changes, servicing, refilling adhesives and edge changes easily. Thanks to new components and an intelligent control system, the new powerEdge Pro Duo unit makes it simple and quick to achieve efficient edgebanding. Coupled with a Homag CNC, such as the Centateq E-310, the pair make for a complete CNC solution. For more information on the new powerEdge Pro Duo gluing system or the Centateq E-310 CNC machine, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

28 KBB REVIEW

Positive kbb underlines strong market drive kbb Birmingham 2020, the leading kitchen, bedroom and bathroom design show, took place at the beginning of March and saw a healthy number of visitors pass through its doors, with two of the four days having a record number of visitors. The event featured a considerable number of KBB supplying brands under one roof, offering innovation and choice for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom designers and manufacturers. Mark Gordon, director of kbb Birmingham, comments: “We are delighted that kbb 2020 has delivered so positively for exhibitors and visitors

in all areas. The exceptionally strong turnout of visitors throughout the four-day show has reinforced our position as the KBB industry’s biggest forum in the UK and shown that it’s not only a place to do business, but is a vital source of inspiring new innovation and design in the KBB sector.” The vibrant showfloor reflected key industry design trends such as personalisation and sustainability, with a huge range of innovations from the sector. Sustainability came into focus during this

n s

year’s event, with both the organiser and exhibitors placing it centre-stage. Show highlights included special features such as The Kitchen of the Future, an installation designed by Rob Mascari in collaboration with students from Bucks New University. The collaboration was created specifically with Millennials in mind – the result was a bold interpretation of what kitchens may resemble in the future. 30 KBB REVIEW

kbb delivers for Blum Although KBB fell at the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, which had caused concern that the show would not be successful, Blum reports another excellent kbb show, with a stand full of visitors for the entire four days. Blum’s 324m2 stand was complimented by everyone for its luxurious spaciousness, plus its genuinely innovative products and ideas. Probably the most exciting innovation was the booth featuring Alexa-activated opening and closing cabinets. But with the new Space Step, Shelf Lock, Aventos HK top, Easystick and Minipress top and new Legrabox options, there was certainly something for everyone. As well as products, Blum launched its new Moving Ideas brand promise, with seven central pillars – Quality of Living, Trust, Quality, Product Range, Inspiration, Services and Innovation. These were explored in full on the stand, with various displays explaining how the concept is applied to every area of the business. When customers join Blum – be they manufacturers, retailers, fitters or end users – the whole Moving Ideas concept swings into action, meaning every one of the seven pillars is considered in order to give the best possible experience. Blum’s new brand promise of ‘Moving Ideas’ puts customers’ needs at the centre of its thinking. How are needs incorporated in product development? How can the Austrian manufacturer of fittings deliver solutions that move the market? And how does the manufacturer enable customers’ creative ideas? Blum says it answers these questions and more with the right fittings solutions and services. Space Step delivers multiple benefits to an area that is frequently left unused – the cabinet plinth. The plinth solution by Blum extends with a single touch and can be used as a step, so children can reach kitchen worktops more easily and lend a helping hand with cooking and baking. Space Step also makes little ones more independent in bathrooms – they can reach the washbasin and wash their hands and

FP318_Pages USE.indd 30

brush their teeth by themselves. As for bigger users, the step offers easy access to higher levels, be it wall cabinets in kitchens or hat racks in hallways. And that is not all. The clever plinth solution fulfils another function - the top of the step can be simply pushed back into the cabinet to reveal a pull-out underneath. This is where Space Step creates extra storage space for seldom-used storage items. Pull-out shelves with Movento and Tandem runners by Blum can now be easily locked in position. The new pull-out Shelf Lock has a two-sided locking mechanism which can be easily released with one hand thanks to a synchronisation shaft. Shelves are secure even when kitchen gadgets are used on top of them. Then there is Aventos HK top, the latest addition to the Aventos range. Combined with a newly developed Servo-Drive unit, it offers enhanced opening and closing convenience. The new fitting is small in size yet comes with innovative features that make installation and start-up easy, with minimalist stay lift and top motion technology all rolled into one. Minipress top is the latest generation of

drilling and insertion machine by Blum. The device facilitates the complete assembly of cabinets and makes it easy to carry out central line and horizontal drilling. Combined with Easystick, Blum’s computer-aided automatic stop system, cabinetmakers and manufacturers can produce precise and finely crafted pieces of furniture in no time. Blum now also meets the demand for fully customisable designs with the Legrabox box system. Thanks to the double-shell drawer side, printing, embossing and special surface finishes can now be added – or colours and materials mixed. Now there is nothing to stop the user from creating thier very own unique collection of pull-outs. Lisa Robinson, marketing manager at Blum UK, comments: “kbb 2020 was a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase our new way of thinking, Moving Ideas. It gave us the opportunity to make new relationships, as well as building on existing ones, which is always essential to us. All in all, the show certainly delivered.” 01908 285700 www.blum.com

Häfele envisions smarter spaces at kbb 2020

With multi-generational living on the rise and the average size of the UK home getting smaller, global manufacturer and distributor of furniture fittings, lighting, hardware and ironmongery Häfele used this year’s kbb show to demonstrate how it can support customers in creating more life per m2 in the home. From its 30m2 Smart Spaces apartment, Häfele demonstrated a range of innovative products which enable functional, flexible living. The company explained that, through early engagement, it could bring designers and manufacturers space-enhancing ideas to life more easily for their customers. The Smart Spaces apartment featured clever solutions such as the company’s Slido sliding door gear, which can be used to create concealed kitchens, bathrooms or utility areas

FP318_Pages USE.indd 32

where space does not allow for hinged doors. The Accuride Sliding Track System was another crowd-pleaser. This innovative system enables features such as kitchen appliances to be hidden under worktops when not in use, giving more usable space day-to-day. Innovative hinge, flap and pull-out storage fittings from Häfele and partner brands Grass and Vauth-Sagel also featured heavily within the Smart Spaces apartment. Grass’ subtle hidden hinges proved popular with visitors who recognised their ability to maximise space while giving a high-quality, easy-to-install finish. Likewise, pull-out wirework from Vauth-Sagel, which premiered at the show in new dark, on-trend colours, captured visitors’ attention for its broad range of applications, including accessible living. “The Smart Spaces apartment really drew the crowds at kbb,” said Natalie Davenport, head of marketing. “It was a fantastic way to demonstrate products in action, but to also start conversations with visitors about how we can support their projects and clients throughout all stages, but how using us in the initial ideacreation stage helps hone in on the right product far more quickly. We have more than 25,000 products available, so when paired together and in conjunction with the designer’s ideas, the possibilities are truly endless.” As well as displaying ways to maximise every space in the home, this year’s kbb provided Häfele the opportunity to celebrate its 40th anniversary in the UK, sharing the story of its

growth and development in the market. A visual timeline shared key moments in its UK history since 1980. These included the invention of its ground-breaking Minifix Connector that it says revolutionised furniture fittings. More recently, Häfele launched: Axilo, a plinthadjusting fitting systems that cuts installation by up to -50%,; and Häfele Ixconnect CC 8/5/30, a claw connector for wooden drawers that can be used without dowels or fitted without tools. As part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, Häfele also revealed a new customer service charter that details the company’s added-value services. Attracting most interest were services such as a forthcoming Lighting Design Service that will guide customers from planning through to technical specification, and Häfele to Order, its bespoke cutting and packaging service. Concluding, Natalie says: “kbb 2020 has been a fantastic event for us. We’ve had the chance to launch some great new products such as two further colours of AluSplash, one of our fastest-selling products ever, and our improved range of Matrix Drawer Systems. We were able to host one-to-one demonstrations of these new solutions in action. “It was also the perfect place to begin our 40th anniversary celebrations, and we look forward to further festivities throughout 2020. It’s been a brilliant four days, we’ve met so many current and future customers, and we’re already looking forward to two years’ time.” www.hafele.co.uk

The ideal combo for drinks compartment flaps With these two new products, Grass increased the comfort of opening and closing flap cabinets. In 2017, Tiomos was presented as a flap hinge together with the equally new Kinvaro D flap holder, and together they form a harmonious and elegant combination for drinks compartment flaps. Both products are also available in the new Night surface finish, continuing the elegance of dark surfaces on the furniture’s interior. Enhancing the design of furniture and at the same time maximising comfort and functionality is what Grass achieves with its flaps and hinges. With an understated design, the two elements can be perfectly integrated into a piece of furniture without detracting from its style. In terms of function and quality, they are super-low profile and “spot on” for this type of application, states Grass. Kinvaro D for flap cabinets Wall cabinets are still key storage elements of a kitchen. With Kinvaro, Grass has developed a series that offers different opening systems for this type of cabinet – a new addition to the range is Kinvaro D. The flap holder with cable stay extends the range of applications to drinks compartment flaps, as they are often used for living room, office and bathroom furniture. It is available in two versions – Kinvaro D/M and Kinvaro D/S – for different flap sizes and weights. Both versions can be fitted on the right, left or both sides, depending on the situation. As they are screwed on, they are easy to fit – either

FP318_Pages USE.indd 33

horizontally or vertically depending on the depth of the cabinet. The opening angle of the flap can be individually adjusted by changing the cable length. With the finishes white, Night and Smoke, Grass offers three elegant options for matching different furniture designs. Kinvaro D/S can be used for cabinets with depths starting from 82mm, Kinvaro D/M starting from 110mm. Both versions are fitted with opening damping systems. The larger version, Kinvaro D/M, also has a soft-close feature. With this version it is also possible to individually adjust the spring force. Tiomos flap hinge – the ideal match With the new Tiomos flap hinge, Grass is extending the Tiomos series by an elegant system in timeless design which offers a sophisticated hinge for the flap in front of a drinks compartment. The Tiomos flap hinge – which is available in nickel-plated and Night finishes – is ideally suited for combined installation with the Kinvaro D flap holder. With its cleverly designed movements, Tiomos enables particularly filigree alignment, which can also be adjusted in three dimensions. The generous front gap adjustment of 1.5-5mm offers sufficient space for fitting. Tipmatic solutions are particularly worthy of mention. With a drilling depth of only 12mm on the flap, the hinge is also suitable for slimfront thicknesses, thereby combining the two main characteristics of Grass’ products – ideal functionality and minimalist design. www.grass.eu

34 KBB REVIEW

Mirka’s tool and abrasive evolution comes to kbb Mirka UK used kbb to underline its high standards of innovation, versatility, ergonomics and the provision of a dust-free work environment – all spearheaded by the new Mirka DEOS Delta. The products on display have been designed and developed from the ground-up to offer increased productivity, efficiency and a consistent superior finish, which, in turn, enable businesses to control costs, look after the health of their workforce and ensure a high-quality end product. The Mirka DEOS Delta’s low-profile design ensures increased control of the sanding process, even during long periods of use. In addition, it incorporates a powerful brushless motor and 3mm orbit for more effective removal of stock. Additionally, when the DEOS Delta is

combined with Mirka’s net abrasives and a dust extraction unit, it provides a consistent scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment to work in. Additional Mirka tools presented included: the Mirka DEROS, built to deliver a rapid, efficient, consistently powerful performance even under a heavy load; the Mirka DEOS, which is the only electric orbital sander on the market that has been optimised for net abrasives by incorporating more than 45 holes in the pad; and the Mirka AOS-B and AROS-B, which are the first small, brushless, cordless sanders that have both orbital and random orbital movements. Also on show was a comprehensive range of abrasives spearhead by Iridium, a robust abrasive that employs a precision coating that enables it to cut faster and more efficiently

while repelling the dust produced, and Abranet Ace, a premium net abrasive that has been developed to increase production and speed for tougher, more demanding sanding applications in a variety of industrial sectors, while reducing costs. Chris Brook, Mirka’s wood business sector manager, said at the event: “After the positive response to our product portfolio from visitors at last year’s show, we are delighted to be back this year. “As a business, we are passionate about ensuring our customers have the correct tools and abrasives to meet their constantly evolving work needs. The way we achieve this is simple – it is down to the relationship we have with the end users that allows us to gain insights, no matter how large or small, that enable us to ensure we can provide them with the right product for the job at hand, so they can complete it with ease, while also having the ability to expand their offering.” www.mirka.com

Cabinet Vision and Alphacam enhancements shown at kbb Visitors to kbb Birmingham saw how woodworking CAD/CAM software Cabinet Vision and Alphacam can increase both sales and productivity for kitchen, bedroom and bathroom specialists. Michael Pettit, EMEA sales manager for both products, which are from the Hexagon production software portfolio, says: “They attracted considerable interest, as the latest versions both feature a raft of new and enhanced functionality.” Visitors were particularly interested in solutions that connect their business silos

together – primarily sales to manufacturing. “Cabinet Vision is the perfect tool to create the Smart Factory, allowing for automation from the showroom floor to all the diverse manufacturing processes,” says Michael. “Sales, design, pricing, presentations, furniture engineering, reporting and machining are all parts of the total designto-manufacture solution that is Cabinet Vision.” Also, with Alphacam, he says visitors wanted to see how they could move away from autonomous work cells and create a digital thread, where they connect their processes together for greater efficiency and profitability.

“With Alphacam, part programming single files on a machine control is a thing of the past,” he says. “Alphacam’s automation tools allow users to automatically create their CNC programs by integrating with other business systems. “This was our biggest-ever stand at kbb, and we’re extremely happy with the number of quality enquiries and orders taken over the four days.” The stand also featured demonstrations of the software’s link with measuring equipment from Hexagon’s Leica division. www.cabinetvision.com www.alphacam.com

James Latham presents the new 2020-22 Egger collection Far from being just a timber distributor, James Latham holds one of the largest and most comprehensive stocks of decorative laminates, melamines, edgings and veneers in the country. Operating from 12 locations across the UK and Ireland, plus dedicated design showrooms in London and Manchester, Lathams strives to offer the kind of product range that allows customers to pick any decor at any time, and have it delivered from stock within 24 hours, instead of waiting around for it to be delivered by the manufacturer, then re-distributed by the branch. Nothing demonstrates this better than the arrival of the recently released Egger Decorative Collection 2020–22. This is the biggest product launch for the company since 2017, offering some of the very best decors and textures, with a focus on the latest design trends. To support an event of this significance, Lathams has committed to stock a huge range of decors across multiple substrates. Building on the success of the previous range, the new Egger Decorative Collection 2020–22 includes new decors, featuring upto-date textures, colours and woodgrains. The collection brings together inspiring design trends from across the world to provide finishes and surfaces for all interiors.

The selection of woodgrain finishes has never been so extensive, with new decors added to the popular Feelwood range. Striking, high-end material reproductions of marble, granite and ceramic have also been developed to meet customer demand, and new solid colours have been added to achieve bold contrasts in design. Egger’s award-winning PerfectSense collection has also been refreshed with the addition of material decors in gloss, matt and topmatt, and an increased range of matching and accent edging means a high-value look can be created with minimal effort.

As an Egger diamond partner, with comprehensive stocks across the whole range of MFC, laminates and edgings, James Latham is a one-stop shop for decorative surfaces, providing a cost-effective option that does not compromise on style or performance. The total collection comprises more than 250 decors, with matching boards, laminate and edging available for every single one. The broad stockholding of product is a key part of the commitment to the new range, but so is the delivery time. With all depots having access to the full product portfolio and regional hubs offering 24hr delivery across the country, Lathams is well equipped to provide a seamless customer experience. This experience is further enhanced at its two specification showrooms, where visitors can work with showroom managers to see, touch and compare product samples to build the entire design palette. www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Movac and Irurena – certified fire-retardant coatings for solid and veneered substrates Following the successful launch of the Irurena Irufire range of fire-retardant coatings by Movac Group in the UK, this industry-leading partnership has developed further strides by gaining additional certification. Irufire B-s1,d0 fire retardant coating system is an easy-to-use, spray-applied range based on two-component Pu acrylic-aliphatic coatings. This system has been developed to coat wooden surfaces which need to comply with the UNE-EN 13823: 2012 Standard of reaction to fire SBI (Single Burning Item) test, and be classified according to UNE-EN 13501-2007 + A1:2010 (Euroclasses). With of a combination of two main products, Irufire Primer IP-1 and Irufire Topcoat IT-1 which can be used to create coating systems that either maintain or upgrade to Euroclass B-s1,d0 classification. For use as a maintain system, for coating walls and ceilings of wooden substrates that are flame retardant and are already certified as B-s1,d0, only one coat of Irufire Primer IP-1 at 80-100g/ m² is required, followed by one coat of Irufire Topcoat IT-1 at the same film weight. The only variance for the upgrading coating system is the application of two/three coats of Irufire Primer IP-1 required to achieve a film weight of between 400-480g/m². The upgrade system has been tested on the standard substrate as defined by EN13238: Reaction to fire tests for building products, conditioning procedures and general rules for selection of substrates. As such, the B-s1,d0 classification obtained by this process can be extrapolated to any substrate of wood or wood derivative with a density equal or higher than 510kg/m³.

F

However, the requirement for many projects involves the use of MDF which has been veneered to meet the specifier’s and client’s aesthetic needs – this involves the use of a substrate which is a composite of MDF, glue and veneer, which has no fire certification. Recognising the problems that this can create, Movac and Irurena have tested numerous glue and substrate combinations, and working alongside a specialist glue supplier, have developed a combination that can give certified results. The system involved that provided the best consistent results uses moisture-resistant MDF, the specified glue and the Irufire B-s1,d0 upgrade system to achieve a certified B-s1,d0 result.

The Irufire B-s1,d0 system has been certified for application in both clear coatings of any gloss level and pigmented coatings in any gloss level and any colour, giving the user ultimate flexibility to ensure that the client requirements are fulfilled. To further assist customers, Movac has developed an easy-to-use calculator which works out the quantity of coating that is required of both the primer and topcoat, based upon the area of m2 that require coating. Contact Movac Group for more information on these products, or for a copy of the Irufire calculator. 08445 610070 www.movac.com

Egger’s new edgings already available at Ostermann

Ostermann now provides customers with the matching edgings to the new Egger Decorative Collection 2020-22

Egger has just launched its new Decorative Collection 2020-22. Thanks to its positive co-operation with Egger, edgings specialist Ostermann was informed beforehand of the new products, and has the matching edgings in stock in time to coincide with the launch. At EuroShop 2020, which took place in Düsseldorf, Germany in February, the collection as a whole was presented for the first time. The 229 Eurodekor, 24 PerfectSense and 69 worktop decors from the collection include approximately 30% new products, including plain colours as well as many wood and material reproductions. The collection is divided into six different decor worlds, from Modern Classic to Future Retro, Black Options, Coloured Monochrome and Metal Fusion, as well as Matt Emotions. The uni section offers a wide range of taupe and grey shades. The wood decors are customarily dominated by oak designs, followed by softwoods in natural colours or bright and dark variations.

FP318_Pages USE.indd 40

A highlight among the wood decors are the vintage finishes. Ostermann particularly recommends the matt PerfectSense surfaces which, apart from plain colour versions, include four marble or stone reproductions. Edgings to the New Egger Collection Due to the co-operation between the two companies, Ostermann was informed of the new products beforehand and could therefore start matching the edgings accordingly as early as last autumn. This way, the industry has access to the matching edgings from the Ostermann range right on schedule with the distribution of the first boards. As a highlight among the edgings, the Ostermann experts recommend Santa Fe Oak Vintage, a vivid used-look oak decor, the new ABS edging Steelbrush cubanit, and the new White Levanto Marble edging, coming across in a cutting-edge white marble look.

Furniture edgings from 1m Ostermann delivers the edgings to the new Egger Decorative Collection 2020-22 starting from small amounts of 1m, as per its standard practice. They are available in 23, 33, and 43 and 100 x 1mm dimensions, and in thicknesses of 1 or 2mm. Upon request, Ostermann can cut a 100mm edging to diverging widths. For customers that do not want to use an edgebanding machine, the edgings can be supplied pre-glued with a hotmelt coating as well. Manufacturers processing their edgings with modern zero bondline technologies can also order the new additions as a Laser, Airtec, Infratec or TPU Laser, TPU Airtec and TPU Infratec variant. For further information on the new edgings, search for ‘highlights032020’ on Ostermann’s website. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu

Rehau sets long-term vision for furniture

Since unveiling its latest ‘more than an edge’ campaign for kitchen and bathroom solutions at this year’s kbb Birmingham event, Rehau has now set its sights on what the future holds, revealing an ambitious five-year vision. Well known for its industry-leading edgeband solutions, Rehau has always been at the cutting edge of this essential furniture material. However, there is much more to the Germanowned polymer company. Until recently Rehau has worked quietly on the quality and innovation it can offer the furniture industry. In a move towards servicing those who are making more bespoke and independent furniture solutions, Rehau has redefined its offering for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in order to provide them with a more diverse (yet stylish) product range. This is a big change for the company who see this as a positive step towards bringing more individual and high-quality solutions to personal spaces throughout homes and commercial spaces. Leading this new direction for Rehau is Scott Williams, sales manager within the Furniture Solutions division, who sees the move as a new and exciting one. It is a completely new path for the company to take as most of the industry are familiar with the Rehau brand via larger

FP318_Pages USE.indd 42

enterprises and joint ventures, but now it is ready to unlock further potential by targeting a new premium market. In order to facilitate this new customer type and their order requirements, Rehau is able to utilise the capabilities of its subsidiary brand Waivis, an engineering company which joined the group in 2008. It is also undertaking a digital transformation project in order to enhance and tailor the ordering process. While Rehau did exhibit its renowned Raukantex edgeband range at kbb Birmingham – one of the largest available ranges in Europe – it also showcased a more holistic solution with other surfacing and tambour products. This included Rehau’s high-performing Rauvisio crystal range, a high-performance acrylic which can also be used as a glass alternative, available in a selection of plain and exclusive stone decors.

Rehau’s newest polymer product has many comparable features to real glass, but has none of the disadvantages associated with processing it. Rehau now offers the Crystal range in three formats, including made-to-measure components, from just one piece. The company was also proud to feature its seamless zero joint technology, with a primer, colour-matched adhesive, and the technically advanced polymer functional layer. Rehau’s new approach was well received at kbb and just the first step of many in a bid to diversify and provide something new to the market. As work has already started with a number of SMEs in this space, readers of Furniture & Joinery Production will no doubt hear more in the months to come. www.rehau.com/gb-en/design-for-furniture

As the UK distributor for Bibielle Spa, Nastroflex and ProGrind, the Leicester-based firm has a wide-ranging product portfolio in addtion to it own UK-based manufacturing capabilities. A family-owned business, Bibielle UK is an experienced supplier of a comprehensive range of abrasive products for surface preparation, blending and finishing. From narrow and wide belts, discs, blocks, non-wovens, sheets and triangles – and a custom-made belt scenario – Bibielle UK has all the key bases covered and can supply from stock within 24hrs. Importantly, Bibielle UK can also manufacture belts to order from 2-4 days, with the company responding to quotes within the hour. Based in Wigston, Leicester, the family-run business is ideally located and can readily cover the heart of the UK. It also boasts an efficient and streamlined distribution model for next-day postal deliveries – for orders made before 4pm, or 3pm Fridays, Bibielle UK will dispatch goods the same day. Using its distribution network, Bibielle UK also provides a full on-site service to help reduce process times for customers by increasing productivity. Being itself a family business, the company is also acutely aware of the current situation regarding the COVID-19 virus situation. Bibielle UK sales director, Tom Wright, explains: “I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you of the current difficult situation our country is currently facing.

The team at family-owned Bibielle UK

However, as a family-owned independent business, and being able to react to difficult economic times, I think it is important to spread news that not all is bad, and that we are ensuring we continue to support and supply the UK like we have done for the past 20 years. “With this in mind, we have significantly invested financially in raw material and finish stock of our abrasive products. This has taken our normal 3-4 month stockholding to around 6-7 months. This in turn will ensure that your own business can continue to run like normal despite the current problems we are all facing.

FP318_Pages USE.indd 44

“Our passion has always been about providing a great service along with a great-performing product. However, this has no meaning if the health of the Bibielle team is suffering. We have also implemented extensive bacteria-fighting agents throughout the company and are doing regular checks on staff to ensure this is being carried out. “I will leave you with a final message that, should you have problems with stock, please get in touch and we will try our utmost to help. This is a difficult time for us all, let alone the additional pressures of trying to keep your business running and customers happy. I sincerely hope that with the plans we have carried out, we can be a valued supplier to your operation not only today, but in the very distant future. Stay safe and best wishes.” 0116 258 1900 sales@bibielle.co.uk www.bibielle.co.uk

Surface technologies – SCM, Superfici and Henkel cross-training

A full day of cross-training on surface technologies with experts on all the technologies involved in the process – sanding, pressing and painting was hosted at the headquarters of Superfici, SCM’s finishing specialist, and talks were given by experts Andrea Perego and Antonio Roveda from Henkel, the well-known glue manufacturer, who illustrated the different kinds of glues available on the market and their various uses. From painting, the focus shifted to another equally important stage in the surface treatment process – sanding.

FP318_Pages USE.indd 46

Talks were given by the product managers of the most valued SCM technologies in this sector, the dmc models, perfectly integrated with Superfici solutions to allow businesses in the wood industry to achieve those sought-after, exclusive effects. Plenty of interest was also shown in the demos of the different technologies on display at the Superfici Technology Center, which provided concrete examples of the considerable application advantages of the vast range of SCM products. The day was rounded off with the third key player in the surface treatment process, pressing. It was the turn of SCM’s experts on Sergiani solutions to show off their range of products, with particular focus on the membrane-pressing process. Sanding, finishing and pressing, three technologies closely interconnected and complementary to one another which provide an ideal in terms of quality and design – an offer which SCM, with the help of Superfici, brings to the market. www.scmgroup.com

48 SANDING & ABRASIVES

Hardwood Profiles opts for Alpha Brush sander Looking for a flexible sanding and de-nibbing solution for its assembled moulded door cassettes and standard moulded profiles, Joe Douthwaite of Hardwood Profiles in Billingham Cleveland, was recommended to contact MD of IWM, Ian Brown, who has over 46 years’ experience in the woodworking industry and is noted for supplying unique woodworking machinery solutions. After visiting Hardwood Profiles and evaluating its production methods, it was clear that the time-consuming hand-sanding and de-nibbing each door cassette and other wood-profiled components on a normal wide-belt sander before going into the finishing spray booth was quite inefficient in a number of ways. Samples of the door cassettes were dispatched to Danish sanding machine specialist, Alpha Brush, to be tested in its showroom and testing facility, Following testing the samples, the recommendation was an Alpha Brush twin-headed machine model Infinity 2S 1000mm. The samples were then returned to Hardwood Profiles, which professed that

Thorben Lundum, owner of Alpha Brush, and Joe Douthwaite, during the installation of the machine at Hardwood Profiles

Option (PTH) can be fitted later

it was delighted with the finished results, and subsequently a machine order was placed and installed by Alpha Brush and IWM’s engineers. Ian says: “The Alpha-Brush Infinity brush machine is the perfect cost-effective solution for small- to medium-size production shops. The Infinity incorporates innovative Alpha-Brush abrasives and is available in 600, 1000 and 1350mm widths. “The Infinity can be quickly and easily adjusted to effectively process a wide variety of applications, such as light stock removal, sealer sanding, de-nibbing, polishing or de-burring of profiled and flat parts for wood, metal, plastic and composite materials. “The Infinity machine is built with heavy-duty motors, components and frame, and is designed for years of demanding use. It incorporates three counter-rotating sanding drums with a heavy-duty

conveyor system – and all sanding rollers are adjustable for speed, height and rotation,” says Ian. “Changing abrasives is as easy as lifting the end-panel of the dust shield and sliding out the old and sliding in the new. Infinity has a small footprint and is mobile – use it, and move it out of the way when not in use. It can also be fitted with aluminium hub-and-strips system, the Alpha-Brush system, nylon brushes, wire brushes, natural fibre brushes and much more, depending on the application,” concludes Ian. For more information on these machines or any of the Alpha Brush range of sanding machines, contact IWM MD, Ian Brown. 01636 918280 07944108747 ibrown@iwmachines.co.uk www.iwmachines.co.uk www.soukup.co.uk

DEOS Delta is flawless from corner to corner Mirka has expanded its impressive Direct Electric Orbital Sander (DEOS) range with the addition of the DEOS Delta. Its ergonomic and innovative iron shape design allows users to access hard to reach areas easily and efficiently, while reducing the stress on arms and hands, and delivering a flawless smooth finish from corner to corner. The Delta’s low 10cm profile ensures it is closer to the surface at any angle, allowing for increased control of the sanding process, even during long periods of use. Weighing less than

1kg, there is less risk of arm fatigue. The sander also incorporates a powerful brushless motor and 3mm orbit for more effective removal of stock, while keeping vibrations at a low level to minimise the risk of HAVs. Additionally, when the DEOS Delta is combined with Mirka’s net abrasives and a dust extraction unit, it provides a consistent scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment to work in. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – industrial of Mirka UK, says: “The R&D team

is in constant communication both internally and externally to understand what the market is looking for, so this addition is the next phase in the evolution of the DEOS product range. The addition of new Mirka DEOS Delta meets a gap in the market as users are looking for a lightweight, powerful and versatile delta sander and we are confident customers will benefit from its technological, health & safety and performance attributes from its first use.” www.mirka.com/uk

Mirka enables sanding of narrow gaps A new extension pad to enhance the versatility of the Mirka DEOS 353 CV 81x 133 has been launched. The pad’s overhang will enable users to sand further into corners and hard-to-reach areas, while delivering the high-quality smooth finish synonymous with the DEOS range. The new pad is versatile enough to handle multiple applications, but has been specifically developed for sanding window shutters and sash windows, which have traditionally been tricky to reach with a normal orbital sander because the slats are narrow and difficult to access.

Mirka states that its DEOS is the only electric orbital sander on the market that has been optimised for net abrasives by incorporating more than 45 holes in the pad. When the tool is combined with Mirka’s net and paper abrasives, it offers an impressive scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment. Its innovative features incorporate a powerful brushless motor, which provides a high powerto-weight ratio when in use. Pete Sartain, national sales manager –

industrial of Mirka UK, says: “As a business, we want to provide the right tool for the job at hand. Our R&D team has listened to what customers require for jobs they are working on, which has led to the design and development of the new extension pad. We believe this pad will increase the versatility of the DEOS 353 by making it easier for users to reach difficult, hard-to-reach areas, making sanding narrow gaps a thing of the past.” www.mirka.com/uk

Henkel PUR hotmelt adhesive in granules

Henkel Technomelt 270-7 granule adhesive

Users of PUR hotmelt adhesives are all familiar with the 2kg blocks and the 20kg drums when using PUR adhesives, but not everyone is aware that this top-of-its-class PUR adhesive is also available in granules. Why is having a PUR adhesive in granules so exciting? James Hamilton, Kenyon’s sales manager, says: “PUR hotmelts have become very popular within the furniture industry for edgebanding, flat lamination and edge sealing, but have not always been an option for many companies due to the initial layout cost of the equipment required to run this type of technology. “This has meant that companies have been restricted to EVA- or PO-based hotmelts, and whilst still a worthy option, they do not offer the

James Hamilton, Kenyon’s sales manager

FP318_Pages USE.indd 52

many benefits such as superior heat and water resistance plus high final bond strength, tight joints making an almost invisible glue line. “Having recognised the gap in the market, Henkel made the decision to manufacture their Premium PUR grade – the tried, tested and proven Technomelt 270/7 – in a granular form, allowing companies to run the PUR adhesive on their existing edgebanding lines without the outlay and hassle of purchasing new equipment. This has proved very successful and provided easy access to PUR technology for every company, opening the door to what can be achieved with PUR and increasing the quality of the finished goods.” Henkel has appointed Kenyon’s as the UK distributor for Technomelt 270/7 granules – James goes on to say: “We have seen massive growth of sales in the UK with PUR technology as more customers are demanding the highest gluing standards, and furthermore we are seeing expansion into new markets.” Have you discovered Henkel’s PUR granules? Henkel PUR granules make gluing easy, with their ability to be used on customers’ existing edgebanding lines, convenient, flexible and cost-saving advantages. Perfect packaging, Technomelt PUR 270/7 is supplied in 12kg cartons, with each carton containing 16 x 750g individual foil packs of PUR granules. This provides a cost-effective option for middle- to low-volume users, by allowing them to control the amount of adhesive being used against their scheduled volume of work. Foil

packs that have been opened can be wrapped and taped and will be good for around 48 hours, reducing wastage and saving money. PUR adhesives and good housekeeping When it comes to cleaning, as with any PUR adhesive, a wax-based cleaner is required to prevent the adhesive from cross-linking and curing within the machine. With the larger 2kg blocks, normally one or two cleaning slugs will have to be purged through the system, to clean it down of any remaining PUR within it. “With Henkel’s PUR granules, you have the ability to gauge the adhesive level within the glue pot throughout the day and run it down towards the end of the shift, meaning there is very little PUR adhesive left in the glue pot prior to cleaning,” explains James. “Use the recommended cleaner for Henkel PUR granules (Technomelt Cleaner 4) which is supplied in a blue granule form, and can be put directly into the glue pot. Normally half to a full cup will be sufficient. This reduces cleaning times and allows for a quick start-up the following morning.” For manufacturers producing kitchen worktops, bedroom and kitchen furniture, fire doors, sports lockers, washrooms or applications where high moisture, heat or chemical resistance is required, James suggests reaching for Henkel Technomelt 270/7 adhesive: “Probably the best edgebanding adhesive on the market, just ask anyone using Henkel PUR!” 0161 627 1001 salesteam@kenyon-group.co.uk www.kenyon-group.co.uk

In these challenging times, give yourself a lift Palamatic is a leading supplier of vacuum tube lifting systems to the woodworking industry. In light of the current situation with COVID-19, Palamatic is focused on trying to support its customers as much as possible and will still be servicing equipment to assist companies keep up with production. Matthew Bennison, in charge of materials handling solutions sales at Palamatic, says: “We are offering telephone sales conferences so we can still provide quotations where companies are looking for new equipment.” With 35 years’ experience, thousands of the company’s solutions are in use on a daily basis. With recent changes in the construction industry, Palamatic’s range has developed to offer solutions to keep up with the demand. As a proven health and safety solution, a Palamatic Vacuum Tube Lifter offers increased operator safety and performance, allowing efficient use of labour, and reduced injuries and claims. “Our systems are very robust, built to last and designed to endure the vast requirements of the woodworking industry,” explains Matthew. “Applications we regularly provide equipment for include loading and unloading vertical panelsaws, beam saws, dimension saws, flatbed CNC stations edgebanders and laminators, paint lines, and tilt tables. “The most common wood materials handled by our lifting systems include Trespa Jumbo boards, Spandrel panels, MDF, MFC, chipboard, wood, plywood, Sterling board, plasterboard and polycarbonate. Weights up to 350kg can be picked up.”

Solid wood products handled include fire doors, panel doors, furniture, staircases, planks, timber sections, laminate surfaces and cabinets. “We are also often asked to rotate boards through 90° or 180° for loading and unloading purposes,” says Matthew. “Another request we get is to grip doors by their edges, instead of using suction on the flat face, for example to avoid wet paint/glue, which our systems can do with ease.

“Our philosophy is to provide equipment fit for the purpose, so all applications will be looked at by our engineers to design the correct solution. ”The gantry that the lifting systems are suspended on are critical to offering an ergonomic solution that works for the operator. “We can provide H-style gantry systems to cover large areas, but our smaller swing jibs and low headroom centre posts can fit into areas where space is an issue and work perfectly well. “Ideally, customers send us samples to test prior to us manufacturing their vacuum tube lifter. We have a skilled field engineering team to install the systems. “Due to the high demand on lifting systems in the woodworking industry we recommend companies take up a service contract to ensure their systems are kept in good working area,” concludes Matthew. 01246 452054 sales@palamatic.com www.palamatic.com

Axminster Trade CNC tilting spindle moulder delivers excellence State-of-the-art technology is used in this machine to precisely control the speed, height and tilt. As a result, users will achieve the highest level of accuracy with every profile moulded, promises Axminster. The CNC spindle moulder runs off an innovative Siemens control system to make it exceptionally easy to adjust the speed, height and tilt, giving users optimal accuracy and enabling them to achieve ideal results. The touchscreen control makes it easy to adjust the machine, while the eye-level position of the screen makes it clear to read. A high-performance motor of 5kW drives the machine and gives impressive torque to the cutter block, enabling clean and accurate cuts. The robust, finely-ground, cast iron tables allow for easy workpiece travel, reducing any chances of corrosion. This spindle moulder centres around a laser-cut steel chassis, robotically-welded to give a strong, stable shell. The strong material increases the lifespan of the machine as it protects the machine from knocks and absorbs any vibration.

FP318_Pages USE.indd 60

Additionally, the use of steel improves the accuracy of the machine, in that a good, stable base is very important. Steel also has a natural frequency of oscillation and therefore reduces any potential vibration. A sliding table (measuring 1250 x 310mm) comes with the spindle moulder. With a travel of 1500mm, it is equipped with a large support table. The sliding table also has a telescopic fence with a maximum length of 2850mm, twin length stops and a digital display of angle settings. This machine not only represents impressive build quality, but also delivers engineering excellence to the workshop, and is able to take on virtually any task in a large workshop. The innovative features and unprecedented

technology make this spindle moulder simple and easy to use. It also comes with a free threeyear guarantee covering all parts and labour. Axminster offers leasing options on this machine – these flexible payment plans are worth looking into and could save money in the long run, says the supplier. Furthermore, customers can take advantage of Axminster’s installation and commissioning service, ensuring the machine is ready for use from day one. This machine is currently on offer at a discounted price. For further details, contact Axminster’s business services team. 0800 371822 abst@axminster.co.uk www.axminster.co.uk

Vollmer launches tool-sharpening machine for small diameters Leading sharpening specialist Vollmer has launched its new VGrind 340S grinding machine. Complementing the existing VGrind series of machines, the new VGrind 340S has been specially developed for producing and re-sharpening extremely small carbide tools with diameters from 0.3-12.7mm. Drills and milling cutters in this size range are in particularly high demand in the automotive, electronics, connector and medical engineering sectors, where assembly spaces and components are becoming smaller and smaller. The automation options on the VGrind 340S allow tool manufacturers to confidently use this new machine tool for unmanned production around the clock. The VGrind 340S grinding machine, which sharpening specialist Vollmer first presented at EMO 2019, enables the highly efficient machining of thin

carbide drills and milling cutters that are primarily used in car manufacturing, the electronics industry and medical engineering. These sectors call for increasingly compact products, featuring metal or composite components that need to be machined with extremely small tools. Electronic components and medical devices are requiring increasingly delicate machining by manufacturers. The VGrind 340S grinding machine is not just suitable for producing rotationally symmetric tools, but also for re-sharpening them. The Vollmer machine relies on the tried-and-tested VGrind technology to achieve this functionality. It features two vertical spindles for different grinding wheel sets, which makes it possible to reduce non-productive times. Five perfectly harmonised CNC axes achieve interpolation with short travel distances for the linear and rotary axes. NUMROTOplus software enables

a three-dimensional simulation of the tool production process and makes it possible to carry out collision monitoring in advance. The height-adjustable and pivoting touchscreen control desk and the generously dimensioned view of the machining space makes for ergonomic machine operation. The VGrind 340S features a replaceable dressing device for the grinding wheels to achieve optimum concentricity and axial run-out for the wheel packages. An optional probe enables in-machine grinding wheel calibration and offers the option of recalibrating

the handling mechanism as often as required. “We are expanding our toolgrinding range with the VGrind 340S to support tool manufacturers in developing extremely small machining tools,” says Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the Vollmer Group. “Machining small tool diameters requires a great deal of finesse, which we have been able to achieve through digital and mechanical solutions. Actuation via five CNC axes and the use of backrests guarantee precise machining in the micrometre range.” www.vollmer-group.com

Joinery company purchases third wood waste heater to save money and operate more efficiently A joinery company has purchased a third wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to help the business save money on heating and waste disposal costs across its large manufacturing site in Leicestershire. NBJ was established in 1982, and specialises in the manufacture of high-quality, specialist bespoke joinery and cabinetry for both residential and commercial projects. The business has made some significant investments in the last few years in order to work more efficiently. The purchase of wood waste heaters is part of this innovative thinking, to better utilise the company’s waste wood by converting it into energy to provide free heating for its 48 employees at its manufacturing base in Husbands Bosworth. As the company’s manufacturing unit is split into a couple of dedicated areas, NBJ has invested in a number of wood waste heaters from Wood Waste Technology, including a WT2 in the machine shop, as well as a WT5 and a

WT10 in the other workshop areas. Director, Sharon Burke, explains: “Once we worked out how much money we were spending on heating the factory and disposing of waste wood offcuts, investing in a wood waste heater seemed the best solution, making good economic and environmental sense. “We were so impressed with the first one that we’ve purchased the other two heaters to allow us to convert more of our waste into energy. The team at Wood Waste Technology has been extremely helpful, always happy to answer any of our questions, and ultimately providing excellent products with fantastic customer service.” Sharon continues: “We’re really delighted with the wood waste heaters, especially as NBJ is committed to the protection of the environment and promotion of sustainable development. We accept our responsibility to minimise the environmental impact of our work and take a proactive approach to improving our overall performance in order to accomplish this. Our investment in wood waste heaters helps us work a little bit greener, by reducing the amount of fossil fuels we burn and lowering the amount of waste that goes to landfill.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

Kronospan Trends 20/21 Collection

Kronospan has launched its new Kronodesign Trends 20/21 to give a new perspective to designers and furniture manufacturers. Inspired by the individual dynamics of big cities and their vibrant urban atmosphere, City Vibes reflects the cultural wealth, creative and trend-setting nature of four big cities – inspiring Barcelona, sophisticated Milan, contemporary Moscow and dynamic Warsaw. The new collection represents the City Vibe with 18 new melamine faced decors that capture the unique appearance and tactile elegance of concrete and wood. They introduce 11 new oaks, two new elms and an innovative industrial mixture of concrete and metal called Flow. This is available in five tones with a new, multifaceted surface finish. Inspired by global and local influences, City Vibes brings limitless design possibilities with a wide variety of surface materials, colours and textures.

Kronospan’s high-quality boards are manufactured in the UK and use only sustainably managed or recycled timber – they are environmentally friendly and extend the lifecycle of wood. Kronospan has also updated its app to help users experiment with looks and moods. It says the app is an essential tool for designers, allowing them to select and try out ideas and options digitally. The app is customisable, and also gives access to Kronospan’s new image gallery and moodboards. Download the newest version 3.0 of Kronodesign Mobile Application to create custom layouts, mixing and matching your own images with the new decors from Trends 20/21 at https://uk.kronospan-express.com/ en/kronodesign-app. To order samples, email sales@kronospan.co.uk. www.kronospan-express.com
