Yet through such turbulent times, the resilient furniture and joinery industry has found opportunity, with large numbers of homeowners opting to update their interiors. And if doing up the current home didn’t work for their ‘new normal’, the stamp duty holiday encouraged plenty of them to up sticks and move to pastures new – with refreshed interiors a priority in their new home, of course. From new kitchens and bathrooms to home offices, garden buildings/offices and other domestic improvements, 2020 presented the flexible-minded furniture and joinery manufacturer with myriad opportunities, and gave many the confidence to invest in new tech and supplies. But not all things in the garden are rosy. The final hours of the Brexit trade talks are ongoing, with both sides posturing to defend their objectives – mainly around the fishing grounds, it would appear. Already, the UK is facing challenging border issues regarding trade –shortages are being encountered with timber, sheet and other materials and components, and it’s looking as though the supply chain will be under pressure well into this year (atleast). 6 News

Whether tariffs (import taxes) manifest substantially is a concern – with considerable monetary value attached to imported machinery and technology from Germany, Italy and elsewhere, price rises also look likely to be part of the future landscape. Ultimately, whatever trading agreement or understanding we end up with, I have confidence that the furniture and joinery industry’s resilience and flexibility will stand it in good stead as we face the challenges moving forwards. Staffordshire staircase manufacturer attracts FTSE 250 buyer StairBox – a leading manufacturer and distributor of bespoke wooden staircases – has been acquired by listed building materials distributor and DIY retailer Grafton Group. Founded in 1994, StairBox has experienced significant growth in recent years. Its success has been driven by the heritage of quality workmanship and futurefocused investment, including the development of pioneering software to enable customers to easily and accurately design, visualise and price staircases online. The strength of StairBox’s operational expertise, team and a culture dedicated to continuous improvement was key to the deal. As such, StairBox CEO, Alex Hancock, will continue to lead the business, and all employees will remain in their roles, ensuring business continuity and stability.
Alex says: “These are exciting times for the whole team at StairBox. We have seen impressive growth over the last few years by investing in our business and providing the highest quality service and products to customers. There are so many benefits of linking up with Grafton, both in our operations, and also in our aspirations for the team and the future. “Grafton has a strong track record of investment in the group and supporting management autonomy to achieve the best results. Our team, customers and supply chain will benefit from being part of the group, which shares our strong values.” The deal could unlock international expansion for Stairbox, as Grafton Group’s footprint extends to Ireland and the Netherlands. Gavin Slark, CEO of Grafton, says: “StairBox is a dynamic manufacturing business with a bestin-class online solution at its core. It has an efficient production process, nationwide distribution and strong growth potential. The acquisition is in line with our strategy of acquiring specialist, high-quality businesses, and we are delighted with this acquisition and the skills and experience that the management team will bring to the group, under

New UKCA Mark to be the focus of latest FIRA Association guide With the new UKCA Mark coming into force on 1st January 2021, the Furniture Industry Research Association has published a guide to support members in navigating the new complexities it brings. The guide, entitled UKCA & UKNI marking guidance: Great Britain and Northern Ireland Conformity Assessment Marks aims to demystify the new marks, although further details on some aspects of the marks are expected to play out next year as the Transition Period continues. The new UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) mark is the new UK product marking that will be used for certain goods being placed on the market of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) when fully leaving the EU. Essentially it is a ‘replacement’ of the CE mark. However, it must be noted that Northern Ireland has adopted its own UKNI mark, full details of which are also addressed
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 6
in the new guide. Sections within the 36-page guide include: an explanation of the UKCA Mark, and the UKNI Mark; timeline requirements for the Great Britain mark, and the Northern Ireland mark; accepted markings for different markets; EU Notified Bodies and UK Approved Bodies; third-party conformity assessment and self-certification; UK legislation governing UKCA - SI 2019:696 (The Product Safety and Metrology, etc (Amendment, etc) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019); validity
of standards and test reports; UK Declaration of Conformity; manufacturers’ responsibilities in different scenarios; and UKCA and UKNI – how will it impact on 1st January 2021. Author Bruce Lovell, consultant at FIRA International, says: “I think it’s fair to say that the new UKCA mark was certainly one of the more complicated subjects we’ve undertaken on behalf of the Furniture Industry Research Association. Whilst we have the majority of facts confirmed for the new marks, the ongoing status of the EU trade deal negotiations and the transition period leaves the furniture industry in a state of flux – with this in mind. a second (and possibly third) version of the guide will be published as information is released. “It’s important to highlight that although the mark comes into force on 1st January 2021, for the
majority of furniture manufacturers that use the ‘self-declaration’ route there is a 12-month ‘grace period’ for full adoption. Advice I am giving to my clients who are working through adopting the mark is not to wait – use those 12 months to review their technical files, including documentation such as instruction manuals, test reports and the standards used as proof of conformity to the regulations. “For manufacturers that use a notified body for third-party certification, it is a bit more complex, and we are advising those manufacturers in this position to speak to their notified body ASAP for advice if they have not already done so.” The new guide is available to members of the Furniture Industry Research Association as part of their membership benefits package via www.fira.co.uk/UKCA. www.fira.co.uk

CombiKids children’s book published Award-winning company and author join forces for a successful “Combi-nation” A new children’s book was launched in time for Christmas – a collaboration between forklift manufacturer Combilift and awardwinning Irish author Emer Conlon resulted in The Forklifts and their Secret Superpowers, which depicts the main Combilift products as cartoon characters. Innovation has been a hallmark of Combilift, and this has now been extended to capture children’s imaginations. The combination of a children’s book and one of the largest indigenous companies in Ireland may not seem a likely fit, but according to Emer this is a novel way to communicate with existing and potential customers, as well as being involved in the education of the next generation. “I also wanted to use it as a marketing tool for the adults, and so I used the USPs of the actual forklifts and turned them into the superpowers of the characters,” he says. “That way, both adults and children would get something from the book.” “Combilift MD Martin McVicar really liked the idea – especially the educational aspect for children – and as a result, CombiKids was
created. So Combilift is ‘Lifting Innovation’, and now CombiKids is ‘Lifting Imaginations’. “The aim was to achieve a balance between Combilift branding and creating a story, filled with drama and excitement featuring endearing characters that children would fall in love with. The Combilift adventure is a real page-turner, and the book also has a couple of baddies – but these are, of course, not Combilift trucks!” For further enjoyment, there is an activity section at the back which includes something for all age groups, such as one-off activities (join the dots and a wordsearch
puzzle) and activities that can be completed again and again (a maze, spot the difference and a map of the world). The CombiKids book highlights overcoming difficulties, the importance of friendship and that bullying is unacceptable – “needless to say,” notes Emer, “the hero is always a Combilift truck!” As the forklift trucks are all different shapes and sizes, there is a focus on the importance of accepting others’ differences, no matter what they look like or what shape or size they are. Martin explains: “We believe it is very important to be involved with
the education of the next generation, and to that end we already have a number of programmes including apprenticeships, tours, etc. However, our new CombiKids initiative will involve even younger children, as they would buy into the Combilift brand by creating an association with it. This will encourage future engineers and other budding talent, as well as motivating children to read. It is a great way to highlight Combilift to a wider community that may not be overly familiar with it.” Combilift is a member of Guaranteed Irish, and the CombiKids book reflects the company’s ethos of supporting local businesses and the importance of Irish jobs – particularly during Covid-19. The book was printed, illustrated and typeset in Ireland. Combilift is also mindful that charities are suffering during the pandemic in terms of support and donations, and has committed to donating all proceeds from book sales to the Make a Wish Ireland charity. Brian Ahern appointed chair of Furniture Industry Research Association Brian Ahern has been appointed the new chair of the Furniture Industry Research Association. This follows the departure of former chair, Charles Vernon, whose four-year tenure came to end in September. Prior to his appointment as chair, Brian had been an active member of the Furniture Industry Research Association council since June 2018. He is a well-known figure within the furniture sector, most notably through his work with the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM) and The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers. As chair of the research association, Brian’s primary role is to lead the council, which represents the membership, and to ensure research funds are spent in the most effective way. He says: “It’s a great pleasure to be elected chair by my peers on the Furniture Industry Research Association council.”
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 7
“After serving on the council, I understand the inner workings of the research association, so am starting from a very solid position on which to build. 2020 has demonstrated how critical it is for organisations to be agile, and the Furniture Industry Research Association is no different. One of my first objectives is to explore how accessible we, and our knowledge, is to members, and identify gaps to ensure we’re their focal point for research and information. “I look forward to open dialogue with members to ensure that we and our service provider (FIRA International) are delivering, and to also learn what direction they wish us to take in terms of knowledge, research and information to really support their business and their role”. Mark Richardson, deputy chair of the research association, says: “Brian was a popular and unanimous choice for our new
chair. He’s served alongside council members, and his passion – not just for the research association, but the wider furniture industry – has always been evident. I speak for all council members when I say that we look forward to working with him. “Our outgoing chair, Charles Vernon, did a tremendous job in steering the research association through some tricky times for the sector, notably supporting members through Brexit and most recently coronavirus. It was a pleasure to support Charles, and now the mantle has been passed, I look forward to supporting Brian as we go into 2021 and beyond.” The full council comprises: Brian Ahern (chair); Mark Richardson, Blum (deputy chair); Mark Allison, FIRA International (secretary); Jessica Alexander, National Bed Federation; Anne Barber, In Heaven at Home; Alan Bennett, Euro Group; Paul Critchley, Home Retail Group;
Andy Green; Jonathan Hindle, KI; Murray Hudson, Gratnells; Rodney McMahon, Morgan Furniture; Nigel Punshon, Hille; Andrew Storey, Moore Furniture Group; and Rob Veitch, Element Materials Technology. Invitations are open to those from across the furniture industry who may be interested in joining the council and shaping the work of the association – further details of roles and commitments are available via info@fira.co.uk. www.fira.co.uk

Strong rebound continues as consumers focus on living space The fourth British Furniture Manufacturers’ (BFM) Economic Review highlights continuing growth in retail – particularly in DIY and household furnishing – but warns winter could bring a sharp fall in sales. BFM MD Nick Garratt has examined reports from sources including the British Retail Consortium, the Bank of England and the EY Item Club as part of the association’s monthly report. The review of data for October and November suggests that six months of growth in the
sector could be impacted by rising unemployment and falling consumer confidence due to the Covid-19 pandemic – although imminent vaccination programmes have been hailed as the “light at the end of the tunnel”. Nick says: “Since the lockdown in spring, the furniture sector has clearly been a big beneficiary of consumers’ switch from services to buying goods, and in particular the desire to improve their living space. “Looking forward, people are beginning to lose their nerve
regarding their personal finances, and as job losses begin to bite this will create a headwind for future recovery. The vaccine will provide a much-needed boost. “In the recent BFM trade survey, a balance of 81% of manufacturers reported rising material costs and almost all respondents expected further rises as we approach Christmas and enter the New Year.” The BFM Monthly Economic Review is available for members and those with an interest in the furniture sector at https://bit. ly/37bmPJT
Hypnos launches carbon-neutral eco-packaging solution guide Leading sustainable bed manufacturer Hypnos has pioneered another groundbreaking carbon-neutral innovation which could help with carbon reduction efforts across the bed and furniture industry, in the form of sustainable bed and mattress packaging. After 18 months of intensive research and development, Hypnos has successfully developed another industry first by creating a recyclable, eco-friendly packaging solution which will be used for its beds and mattresses across both its retail and contract factories. It comes as part of major efforts by the cutting-edge manufacturer to design its packaging from sustainable and renewable sources and eliminate the use of harmful, fossil-based products. At the heart of the packaging is sugar cane, a renewable and carbon dioxide-depleting resource. Sugar cane ethanol is combined with recycled plastic, which has a carbon footprint that can be up to four times lower than that of normal plastic, helping those who use it to massively reduce their carbon footprint. The use of ethanol, a bi-product of sugar cane production, and recycled plastics that form a green polyethylene (a more environmentally friendly form of plastic) means the creation is carbon neutral and 100% recyclable. Furthermore, it is incredibly durable and has superior technical properties to normal polythene, performing better on puncture tests, reports Hypnos. Hypnos led the challenge by
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 8
working in partnership with a specialist green polyethylene manufacturer to create the cuttingedge solution which could be a sustainability gamechanger across the entire bed and furniture industry. Indeed, Hypnos made the decision not to patent or trademark this packaging for itself. Instead, it wants to share its innovation globally, and is calling on industries around the world to stop using single-use polythene and make the transition to this 100%-recyclable product. Richard Naylor, sustainability director at Hypnos, comments: “We’re extremely proud of our sustainability credentials, and it’s Hypnos’ commitment to creating ethical solutions which benefit the environment that has allowed us to invest in this revolutionary green polythene. We’ve been working hard to develop this innovation, and continue to look at new ways we can make better sustainable solutions and choices – not just for Hypnos, but for the bed and furniture industry as a whole. “We believe in fostering environmental responsibility
wherever we can, which is why we are keen to share this technology with other industries. Most bed manufacturers use plastic to protect their beds and products. If all the mattress manufacturers in the UK switched to eco-polythene instead, it would save a staggering 8000 tonnes of CO2 per year, so just imagine what could be achieved if bed and furniture manufacturers worldwide made this change! “We are now calling on all bed and furniture manufacturers to change from fossil-based polythene, which can take thousands of years to decompose. Instead, we’re asking them to make the transition to this product to reduce our combined carbon footprints and help care for the planet. We’re happy to set up meetings and put them in touch with our specialist manufacturer so that they too can start to benefit from this pioneering sustainable, carbon-neutral solution.” New Government legislation requires that all businesses use plastic packaging that contains at least 30% recycled plastic by 2022 or face a new Plastic Packaging Tax. With a ratio of 65% renewable
sugarcane to 35% recycled plastics, the new eco-polythene by Hypnos will take even more plastic out of landfill and incineration, stimulating increased demand for recycled plastics that can be turned into further reusable and sustainable materials. Hypnos has been trialling its green packaging on selected mattresses and beds for several months, and from November has been rolling it out across its entire range. An essential part of the process is the removal and return of the packaging by Hypnos’ delivery partners, as this allows it to be returned and recycled in perpetuity. As a result, Hypnos is taking back its new packaging from retailers and hospitality partners wherever possible, so it can once again be recycled. This latest development is another milestone in Hypnos’s successful sustainability agenda. From the use of renewable and traceable natural resources to carbon offsetting programmes, the business was the first bedmaker in the world to become carbon neutral, and has been continuously carbon neutral for a decade. In addition, it was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development last year. Furthermore, Hypnos’ beds and mattresses have been made from natural and sustainable materials, with no chemical-based foams, and have been completely recyclable, ensuring they never need to go to landfill, for over a decade. And now, even the protective packaging its beds come in is entirely recyclable and carbon neutral, too. www.hypnosbeds.com

Norbord leads the way with carbon negative status Norbord now holds a net carbon negative status across all its products and operations, locking up more CO2 than it emits. Leading the way in tackling the issue of climate change, the company’s four European sites and three product ranges sequester a total of 1.1m tonnes of carbon annually. While carbon neutrality means that an activity releases net zero carbon emissions into the atmosphere, carbon negativity signifies that an activity goes beyond achieving net zero carbon emissions. This creates an environmental benefit by not releasing carbon dioxide that would
ordinarily be released into the atmosphere. As timber is the main component of Norbord’s products, carbon is sequestered and locked up for the life of the board. The confirmation of Norbord’s carbon negative status comes after more than a year of analysis and independent verification, although it is evident that many Norbord products have been carbon negative for significantly longer. All Norbord products have Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). These independently verified and registered documents communicate transparent and
comparable information about the product’s lifecycle environmental impact. The lifecycle analysis accounts for all stages from forest to merchant, including harvesting, production, sales and logistics.
Steve Roebuck, director, EHS, Norbord Europe, believes “carbon dioxide emissions are one of the most significant drivers of climate change and there is an urgent need for products and businesses to achieve carbon neutrality in order to meet the UK’s aim to be carbon neutral by 2050. Norbord’s carbon negative status means we’ve not only already achieved this goal but have gone significantly further, clearly demonstrating our determination to be a market leader in sustainable, climate-friendly products”. www.norbord.co.uk/carbonnegative/
CSIL’s new furniture industry ecommerce report The world furniture industry has been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. According to CSIL estimates, global furniture consumption registered an unprecedent decrease in 2020. Within this framework, it is worth noting, however, that social distancing policies and lockdowns
provided people with the opportunity to focus on home and comfort, and to adapt their spaces to the needs of working from home, reports CSIL. The online channel is partially compensating for the sharp decrease of brick-and-mortar store sales, and the global value of furniture sold online registered a
double-digit increase in 2020. The new edition of CSIL’s report, E-commerce for the Furniture Industry, is now available. The report analyses the performance of ecommerce in the furniture market, with a focus on key geographical areas (Europe, North America and Asia), current market size, different
ecommerce business models, performance of leading players – and the results of CSIL’s survey of leading furniture manufacturers, which highlight their approach to the web channel, their strategies, future expectations and the mostdemanded products. www.worldfurnitureonline.com
Institute of Carpenters applauds wining students Four students in their third year of carpentry and joinery studies at college are the first to receive an inaugural Third Year Student Award from the Institute of Carpenters (IoC). Matthew Mead, a student at the Building Crafts College in London, won the overall prize for the best third year student, and received a set of tools donated by Axminster Tools & Machinery. Martin Gilmore, student at Newcastle College, Phillip Bentley, student at Accrington & Rossendale College (part of the Nelson & Colne College Group) and Owen Phillips, student at Coleg Sir Gâr’s Ammanford Campus in Wales, all received highly commended for their entries, and an Axminster Tools voucher. This is the first IoC Third Year Student Award, held among the colleges which hosted and launched a City Hub grouping for the institute in the last 18 months. The IoC plans to run the award scheme again this year, widening it further amongst its network of 30 college members. The judges were: IoC board member Martin Corton of Rainleaf
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 12
Artisan Flooring; YouTube carpentry and joinery celebrity and IoC fellow, Robin Clevett of UK Construction and the SkillBuilder channel; and IoC president, Geoff Rhodes. Martin comments: “It was a great pleasure to judge the entrants for the IoC’s Third Year Student Awards. All entrants displayed great craft ability and thorough technical knowledge, but the highlight was the exceptional attitude from all four entrants. Carpentry and joinery is a calling, and it looks like these four students have a wonderful future ahead of them.” Robin adds: “These four students have demonstrated professionalism, dedication and perseverance in gaining their skills, and should be a beacon for new entrants choosing a craft career. I was particularly pleased that there was a wide range of skills demonstrated, ranging from traditional roof construction to fine joinery. Encouraging the right calibre of entrants into the UK construction industry is more important than ever, as we’ve a great need for craft skills. “This year’s winner demonstrated
a standard of craftsmanship that would rival other craftsmen from around the world. Our strong craft heritage in the UK will be in safe hands going forward if we can deliver the training and encourage new entrants to gain a similar level of skill to those witnessed in this year’s contest. I look forward to seeing next year’s award entrants, and hope to encourage new students to take part in this initiative via my own social media channels and via others I work with.” Darran McLeod, sales director at Axminster Tools & Machinery, which provided the prizes, says: “As a business, Axminster Tools are passionate about woodworking and helping to build a sustainable future for the industry. In view of that, we actively seek to support the education of vital woodworking skills. “We work with The Furniture Makers’ Company in helping to bridge the making skills gap, and so supporting The IoC with an award for emerging new talent seemed like a natural fit for us. We’re proud to be in the fortunate position to do

what we can for the makers of the future and help them with the first steps to a successful career in the woodworking industry.” Geoff summarises: “I was really so delighted to see the high quality of entries from these colleges, spread across the UK. All of the students individually can be very proud to have been selected as a candidate by their respective colleges, and I am sure that each of them will progress successfully through their remaining time in college and on into their professional careers, at this time of a national craft skills shortage.” Read more from this article online at furnitureproduction.net

14 WOOD AWARDS 2020
Wood Awards 2020 winners announced The winners of the annual Wood Awards have been announced. The judges have selected six structures and three products that represent the best of British architecture and product design in wood. Established in 1971, the Wood Awards is the UK’s premier competition for excellence
in wood design. The competition is free to enter, and aims to encourage and promote outstanding timber design, craftsmanship and installation. The Wood Awards is one of the few design competitions to go ahead despite Covid-19. The independent panel of judges always visits
all the shortlisted projects in person, making this a uniquely rigorous competition. This year, the usual judging process had to be adapted, but the competition persevered, and the judges still managed to see each project. www.woodawards.com
GOLD AWARD & PRIVATE WINNER The judges chose The Rye Apartments as this year’s Gold Award and Private category winner. The Gold Award is given to the winner of winners. Judge Jim Greaves comments: “Tikari Works have taken a gamble and done something very unusual, and it’s paid off – the apartments are very popular.” This development of 10 sustainable apartments sits on a prominent corner site. A mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom units are set in two blocks that respond independently to the changing scale across the site. The user’s quality of life is at the heart of the design. The project was driven by two key considerations – how to resist standardised or default positions within housing design, and how to minimise the materials, embodied carbon and cost. CLT was used for the superstructure and all the internal walls and staircases. The CLT is exposed throughout, creating large, light-filled spaces and a comforting atmosphere. These volumes are detailed with white-washed ash floors. Delicate spruce strips form dropped ceilings in the hallways and bathrooms. Kitchen cabinets are made from CNC grooved threelayer spruce ply boards, and the worktops are made from recycled paper. The limited palette of natural materials helps to minimise visual clutter. Judge Kirsten Haggart says: “The different timber elements all have the same whitewashed tone and co-ordinate perfectly with the reinforced concrete columns, creating a beautiful place which has an intimacy that most pools lack.” The Swimming Pool Hall is one of three linked pavilions comprising a new sports centre for the school. The building’s design has strong visual connections between indoors and outdoors to encourage physical activity among students while seamlessly connecting the old facilities. The form of the roof evokes a dynamic sense of movement in water. From outside, it sweeps down to respect the boundary with a Grade 2 listed building. Internally, it sweeps up to accommodate a viewing gallery. Curved glulam beams support CLT roof panels with integral timber acoustic linings. The roof’s geometry and pale stained finish reflect natural top-light and artificial uplighters, eliminating the need for any light fittings above the pool. The flush pool edge and glazing on three sides allow views to the outside. The Commercial & Leisure winner is Frindsbury Manor Barn. The judges admired the attention to detail and scale of the conservation project. This Grade 1 listed medieval barn, originally built in 1403, was damaged by fire in 2003. At 210ft long, it is the longest barn in the UK. A third of the barn was rebuilt in locally sourced green oak. Large quantities of curved timber were selected for braces and tie beams. In total, 1400ft3 of oak was used. Extensive stone repairs were also needed. 95,000 Kent peg tiles were used to re-tile the old and new sections of the barn. The project was based on the fundamental principles of conservation – “maintain as much of the historic fabric as possible whilst ensuring the building has a viable future use”. The barn and its surrounding areas are steeped in history, and it remains fundamental to the local community.
INTERIORS The Interiors winner is Brockeridge Stair. Judge Ruth Slavid comments: “This is a very beautiful and impressive stair. In addition, there is a great story in that it was used to pioneer an approach to the use of BIM in joinery manufacture that is the recipient of ongoing Government grants.” This prototype staircase is part of a UK Government-funded R&D project to enable digital fabrication directly from BIM modelling environments. The stair rises three floors and is cantilevered from flushmounted stringers. The parts were CNC machined and assembled on-site using standard tools. The new platform developed during research allows designs to be defined parametrically, enabling the user to configure bespoke objects to specific requirements. Parameters such as height, width, depth and material thickness can be user-controlled. Digital manufacturing is enabled directly from CAD or BIM software via the platform, which enables faster fabrication and better pricing information, and reduces errors and waste. Items can be locally fabricated through a distributed manufacturing network model open to any CNC enabled workshop. The process greatly improves construction efficiency, supports Covid-19 social-distancing restrictions, increases the type and complexity of work undertaken by smaller site-based joiners, and keeps the labour pool local. SMALL PROJECT This year’s Small Project winner is Wooden Roof. The judges were impressed by the light and airy garden room and were particularly interested in the process of design through to construction. This conservatory, built for an existing Grade 2 listed house, sits in a north-facing garden. The roof profile had to be pitched shallow to ensure that it sits below the existing adjacent boundary wall shared with the neighbour. The roof also needed to be well drained. One solid piece of wood, enclosed by four seasons glazing units, forms the entire structure and acts as the building’s envelope, structure, insulation and cladding. The diagrid frame is a combination of falls that are either short and steep or long and shallow. The pieces were all CNC-fabricated and were light enough to be assembled manually on-site. The beam cross-junctions were fixed without any glue or mechanical fixings. Each wood section is wide and deep, which helps to emphasise natural light and cast shadows throughout the space. PRODUCTION FURNITURE Tenon Table is the Production winner. The judges admired the design and were particularly impressed by how well balanced the tables are. Designer Daniel Schofield has taken a pragmatic approach to the design of the Tenon Table. Material has been removed where it is not needed, leaving the base weighted and stable, which naturally creates the joint for the top. The oversized wedged tenon has become a focal point which highlights the construction of the piece and the quality of craftsmanship. A combination of wood turning, CNC machinery and hand jointing have been used to create each piece. The table is available in two sizes. STRUCTURAL AWARD This year’s Structural Award winner is the National Automotive Innovation Centre, chosen from all the shortlisted buildings. Structural judge Nathan Wheatley comments: “We are looking for a scheme that has challenged the engineer, where the concept has been delivered in spite of that challenge and where the resultant structure is in some way integral to the success (and architecture) of the building.” The National Automotive Innovation Centre is the largest research and development centre of its kind in Europe. It can hold 1000 staff and students, working across design, engineering and research. Timber was chosen for its warm, natural feel within the industrial setting, and its wellness and low carbon properties. The walls were assembled using a pioneering system of prefabricated, self-spanning timber

BESPOKE FURNITURE The Furniture & Product judges selected two winners within the Bespoke category. Duo by Studio Woodgate was awarded for its elegance, simplicity and exemplary craftsmanship. Duo is a pair of deceptively delicate sofas designed for Alex Beard CBE, chief executive of The Royal Opera House. When first tasked with the project, Woodgate started by observing the space at the Royal Opera House. He noticed that the existing sofas were the same height as the chairs in the room – a lower sofa would create a different dynamic to the room. Conscious not to make the sofas too comfortable, the approach was to create something more comfortable than a bench but not as soft as a sofa. The light rectangular arms have a curved chamfer detail with cleverly
hidden metal rods to ensure the sofa is robust. A subtle 2mm radius runs around the edge of the wood throughout the piece. The two end frames for the arms were made up from solid timber and shaped on a five-axis CNC machine. The seat and back are made from a solid timber frame and sit on a nook cut into the end frames secured by a metal dowel. The seats are upholstered in tan leather. Additionally, the Beehave by Marlene Huissoud was recognised for its unusuality and the attention to detail that went into the making of it. The judges also praised that it is a fully functioning behive, and not just a sculptural piece. Sir Ian Blatchford commissioned Marlène Huissoud to create a beehive to feature in a new permanent gallery at the Science Museum focused on the future of agriculture. While doing research, Ian came across a study focused on the habits of bees and the reason behind their decline in population. Marlène’s artistic outlook is rooted in the natural world. She also the daughter of a beekeeper. Rather than a traditional, house-like beehive, Marlène created something more organic. The log-like hive is a refuge for wild bees rather than a place to make honey. The piece was hand-carved, and the red oak was then blackened using a scorching technique. It took 100 hours to add the tactile engraving details to the surface using a pyrograph. It was then covered with propolis, a dark resinous material produced by bees, to seal the gaps. This protects the timber and the bees from disease and also attracts bees with its scent. How Industry 4.0 could spell the end of unnecessary maintenance As the UK recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic and the huge associated economic repercussions, efficiency within manufacturing industries will be key to keeping costs low and productivity levels high. The demand for efficiency is even more pressing within the furniture and joinery industry, where a no-deal Brexit is threatening trade routes between British furniture manufacturers and their key importers and exporters in Western Europe.
By Colin Crow, managing director of digital transformation specialist, Sigma Dynamics
With demand for furniture increasing year on year due to more home developments in the country, a key way to improve productivity within manufacturing is turning to digital solutions to optimize operations. As we move towards a complete digital revolution in manufacturing, it is crucial that machinery maintenance function is revitalised to minimise unnecessary equipment maintenance.
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 18
To prevent major system failures and the inevitable resulting disruption, many manufacturers deem preventative plant maintenance to be vital. Many senior engineers will know all too well that machine failures and related down-time costs money can have a knock-on effect throughout the business – hampering productivity, blighting customer satisfaction, damaging reputation and, ultimately, harming profits. While preventative maintenance may seem necessary to mitigate these risks, it can also create a damaging drain on resources. Often, manufacturers set maintenance schedules at shorter than necessary intervals to ensure failures do not occur, meaning they are spending time and money maintaining equipment which just does not need it. So, what is the alternative? Is there tech that manufacturers can employ to help them achieve just the right amount of maintenance? The answers lie in utilising a combination of self-diagnosing devices, 4G and 5G technology, big data, machine learning and AI technologies to optimise maintenance, swap-outs and retirements. Using these technologies together will enable maintenance teams to focus on the
site visits which are necessary and add value. Although placing so much emphasis on tech can seem daunting, the new generation of ERP software platforms makes it easier to implement more digital approaches and allows manufacturers to move away from expensive and time-consuming maintenance schedules. Embracing predictive maintenance Engineering teams spend as much as 25% of their time maintaining equipment that does not need servicing, and therefore wasting company resources. Considering this, the benefits of moving towards predictive, self-diagnosed tech are obvious. Modern devices can tell you their health, alert you when there is a problem and provide important feedback such as cycle time and environmental conditions. They also provide data that will help to determine when a device might fail, if it needs to be serviced and when it should be left to alone. Enlisting the help of AI, data analysis and machine learning into predictive maintenance will let manufacturers base decisions on the real time data that self-diagnosing devices produce. The advantages here are numerous. Targeting predicted failures before they happen keeps

production rolling and avoids unnecessary, costly activity. This achieves positive results for both internal and external customers, whilst saving time and money. On top of this, today’s self-diagnosing tech also tells you when it is time to swap out and when it is time to retire apparatus with great accuracy. Maintenance as part of a connected enterprise Digitally optimised maintenance should not be stand alone. It should exist as part of a connected enterprise, which connects technology, processes, and people across the entirety of the business. This approach helps to reveal a whole new level of insight into the way each element of the business feeds into overall performance. Connection between functions leads to constantly refreshing intelligence in the form of joined up data, shared processes and understanding which can then be turned into action. Connected enterprise makes results clear to see via shared reporting dashboards. Simplifying tech integration Digital transformation should not overthrow a business’ existing operations – it should be an evolution and improvement of current systems and processes. Rather than being a case of out with the old and in with the new overnight, implementation of technologies should be phased. In the maintenance area, existing equipment can often be upgraded to enable data collection and
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 19
analysis without breaking the bank. Current data platforms can be migrated across into AI and analytics-friendly systems and new tech can be integrated into existing IT platforms. As furniture and joinery manufacturers drive efficiency and innovation by switching on to tech solutions, it is important to consider specialist providers who are available to manage
every stage of the process based on the best practice solutions for you and your sector. Implementation is simple with the right expert support, so as the sector embarks on its digital transformation journey, it is advisable to pursue investment in technology to reap the benefits of digital transformation ahead of the competition. www.sigmadynamics.co.uk

Tight timber and panel products supply conditions continuing into 2021, says TTF The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) is advising all timber users and buyers to strengthen their purchasing strategies in dialogue with their suppliers, as a lack of stock on the ground and tight supply conditions are set to continue well into 2021.
The very challenging situation for the timber supply chain in 2020, affected by pandemicrelated issues and massive changes in market dynamics, and exacerbated by high levels of global demand for timber and wood products, is setting the scene for continuing tight timber supply conditions certainly into Q2 2021, if not longer, warns the TTF. Early in the pandemic, many European sawmills were temporarily shut. Lockdowns across the UK and Europe then produced a massive surge in demand for timber for DIY and garden projects, which began to impact supplies through to Britain’s construction sector. Additional high demand for structural timbers – particularly CLS and carcassing – from across Europe and especially from the US, has also affected the amount of material available in traditionally well-stocked markets such as the British builders merchant sector. With demand continuing at a high level into 2021, there has been no quiet season in Britain’s building trade, and thus little opportunity for sawmillers and importers to replenish stocks on the ground in the UK to their previously plentiful levels. Covid-19 is still producing spikes in cases, such as that recently seen in the UK’s largest timber-supplying partner, Sweden, where an increase in cases resulted in a tightening of operating conditions and delays where vessel crews are required to self-isolate. Import logistics, especially with the end of the Brexit transition period and the new arrangements with the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, may put further pressures on supplies, as the timber sector will need to compete with many

other industries in obtaining road haulage capacity within the UK. To ensure available material is distributed equitably, many TTF members are continuing to operate on customer allocations. Volumes are likely to be available, but on much longer lead times than previously. Merchants, manufacturers and building contractors are advised to contact their supplier to discuss future needs, and similarly to become more aware of the factors influencing suppliers’ capacity to meet demand. Companies without a longer-term purchasing strategy will struggle to replenish stocks through JIT buying in Q1 and Q2, 2021. David Hopkins, chief executive of the TTF, says: “Pre-Covid, timber buyers were used to there being plentiful landed stocks available to meet immediate demand. Suppliers were also used to having time over traditionally quite periods in the
trade to rebuild stocks for the following season. “This situation has now been turned on its head. It is understandable that many customers should be surprised by, and angry about, the new reality we are facing together. The reported price inflation has also made it difficult for some manufacturers to accurately price projects for customers. “We would like to reassure the wider sector that volume supplies are available, though on much longer lead times than we have all been used to. This situation will be with us well into 2021, so we advise contacting your suppliers to discuss meeting your needs for the year ahead. The challenge going forward will be to achieve the balanced product mix needed by the market – a factor which may be further complicated by the haulage demands and new customs and plant health procedures engendered by Brexit.” www.ttf.co.uk

Busy CNC firm opts for top-spec AES machine to add capacity and capability Gloucester-based DT Solutions is an established design and product development company with a breadth of experience using a wide range of materials to a broad customer base. The company primarily provides CNC cutting and routing services for companies and individuals that require 2D or 3D machined wood, MDF, plastic and acrylics, highpressure laminates and metal components. The company’s CNC machines are complemented by a powerful laser engraver which is suited to cutting, engraving and etching, enabling it to fulfil almost any criteria. DT Solutions has a broad experience of working with a range of manufacturers making modular furniture, kitchens, educational and play equipment, signmaking, letter cutting, pattern- and jig-making and PoS units – and these are just some of the company’s standard solutions repertoire. The current machine capacity includes CNC machining centres, CNC routers, CNC turning, CAD/CAM systems, and laser cutting and engraving (maximum bed 900 x 600mm). The company’s latest acquisition is an impressive AES Raptor Ultra 1632 heavy-duty, high-speed, flatbed CNC machine, ordered from AES’ exclusive UK agent, J & C O’Meara. DT Solutions’ company director Matt Crowley describes the reasoning for this type of new machine: “Primarily, we needed extra capacity, and with five existing CNC machines across our two units, and with a large element of our work for the building industry, we wanted something that could readily cope with the tough demands of that kind of work. Secondly, we needed a machine that would work with our Alphacam software.” Carl O’Meara takes up the story: “DT Solutions was a particularly interesting job as they were already running a number of other CNC machines, so were well versed as to the capabilities and what they wanted from an additional machine. As their company name suggests, they are also a solutions provider, so deal with many different materials including HPL, TRESPA, plastics, MDF and MFC. “We first met DT Solutions at the W18 woodworking machinery exhibition, where they expressed interest in the AES Extreme we had on display – and also met John Edmonson, who does our software training. “Initially, John visited them on several occasions in a software applications CAD/CAM training capacity to get them up to speed on their programming and manufacturing techniques, as they were already running four CNC machines. “From this initial contact at W18, DT then arranged to visit us, as they said they were impressed with the build of the machine we had showed at the exhibition and wanted a more in-depth demonstration of the machine we have set up in our showroom, along with a discussion about the services and support we offer. “This resulted in a second visit a few weeks later, where DT wanted to run some of their work on our machine using their own material, programs and tooling – and based on certain restrictions on their existing machines, DT wanted further technical information about the Osai controller and additional features of its built-in software.

Innovative, cost-effective solution for leading HVAC manufacturer When TROX UK started to plan the local production of TROX Group’s newest air handling unit, the X2, Air Press Developments was able to solve a significant cost problem for the project via an innovative approach. At TROX’s Anholt facility, composite panels are assembled using a tower press. If a similar approach were to be adopted in the UK, initial capital equipment investment was expected to exceed £250,000. Clearly cost prohibitive in the early stages of this new product’s manufacture, the TROX UK design team began investigating lower-cost alternatives. Research led by chief design engineer, Martyn Mills, prompted a visit to the AirPress facility in Salisbury to talk to AirPress MD Peter Hoggard regarding the feasibility of using vacuum to press the high-tolerance composite panels. After undergoing trials, the solution chosen
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 26
utilises the BenchPress Membrane Press – it was found that an applied vacuum pressure of 15mbar was all that was required to successfully press the panels. Describing the project, Martyn highlights that: “The challenge for TROX UK was to find a costeffective alternative which applied even pressure to the panel, irrespective of its size or profile. “The solution provided by AirPress was ideal, and as a result we have already invested in three BenchPresses and plan to buy a fourth in the new year – all for considerably less than the cost of a tower press. The vacuum-pressing method has already been used on the panels
included in the first X2 to leave our factory (headed for schools in the Midlands) and our associates in other TROX manufacturing subsidiaries are also interested in the approach we have adopted.” Peter Hoggard, MD of Air Press Developments, says he was delighted to work with Trox to find a cost-effective solution to meet their requirements. Hotel conversion makes the news with Alphacam Holz-Her says Alphacam is the industry “go-to” CAM package A bespoke traditional joinery company operating at the high end of the woodworking market was recently involved in a major conversion project, turning the former offices of the Coventry Telegraph newspaper into a luxury 1970s-themed hotel. LOL Summers Joinery’s work on the conversion included slotted headboards, panelling, bedside tables and wardrobes in 88 bedrooms, along with seating in 10 areas, and fittings for two bars and reception. It is one of three companies in the woodworking industry owned by Lee Summers. The others are RHA Production, focusing more on fitted furniture, and 5-Axis Routing, which serves the CNC requirements of the other two, as well as standing alone as an independent subcontractor. “We provide bespoke, high-end traditional joinery, and have worked with universities and schools. We’ve also manufactured shopfronts for supermarket chains such as Tesco, the Co-Op and Sainsburys all over the country,” says Lee. While Summers Joinery was contracted for the hotel conversion, 5-Axis Routing provided all CNC aspects for the component parts and drawing elements for approval. And, as the name of his CNC company suggests, Lee Summers believes wholeheartedly in the huge benefits of five-axis routing, compared to three-axis. All its machined components are cut on a Holz-Her Dynestic router, with a 2.2 x 4.6m bed and in- and out-feed tables, programmed with Alphacam Ultimate software.
“That combination gives us the ability to do a variety of work without the need for specialist cutters. We produce key, high-end, complex shapes, accurately machined in the shortest possible time. So, we’re not looking to put ourselves in the same sector as the three-axis market,” says Lee. “Alphacam is geared up for the ultimate bespoke manufacturer, which is us. Without it, we couldn’t do what we do. We started by using it for just a few hours every couple of days. Now it’s completely integrated into our processes and we work with it nine or 10 hours every day. “Prior to investing in Alphacam we programmed the router with its proprietary software, which is excellent at what it does, but was too simplistic for our bespoke needs.” The company has an experienced Alphacam programmer in Alex McCann, who uses its Automation Manager function to work on solid
models from Autodesk Inventor, and automates processes through its range of advanced tools, including machining styles. In a conventional CAM system, each file would be processed individually by inserting the file, extracting the features, applying tool directions and toolpaths, saving the file and NC code, and then generating the required reports. Automation Manager carries out those repetitive tasks automatically. 2D and 3D CAD files, along with solid models from third-party software, are batch processed, from file preparation right through to applying toolpaths, with NC code being generated automatically. Lee’s points, both about 5-axis cutting and Alphacam, are shared by Paul Nightingale, national sales manager for Holz-Her UK, who says: “Five-axis machining offers a world of possibilities – it returns a robust, flexible, direct-driven head with no need for aggregates.

It saves on time because it’s easier than programming for aggregate use. And, as well as requiring fewer cutting tools, tool life can be extended, depending on the operation.” He says the key for coming up with the correct package for 5-axis Routing was to understand their aspirations and pain points. “We’re not just selling a machine tool,” he says. “We’re providing a complete solution, including software, training, and service back-up to remove the company’s pain and challenges, and deliver their goals in terms of quality, productivity, longevity, reliability, and return on investment.” In Lee Summers’ case, those challenges had been customers demanding higher-quality parts with increasingly faster turnaround times. The issue had been whether they needed a pod and rail machine or flat bed. Working collaboratively with Lee Summers, Paul established that the Dynestic flat bed was the perfect solution for enhancing productivity within the company’s simplified production process, while maintaining a high level of creativity. Paul concludes by saying: “Being the go-to CAM package for the industry, Alphacam is the perfect CAM system to drive it. The software is extremely stable and exceptionally powerful, and works seamlessly with our open architecture, NC-HOPS. It fits perfectly with the synergy of top-quality machine and personnel at Summers Joinery.” www.alphacam.com

Edgebanding Materials & Technology With more than 35 years of specialising in edgebanding sales and production, Cantisa can provide solutions for all edgebanding needs, also adding value to customers’ furniture products with its Décor Programme.
Cantisa – edgebanding solutions for all needs Cantisa is a Spanish company established in 1985, with a very strong position in the Spanish market, also exporting its products across the world. ‘Innovation, design and quality’ is Cantisa’s premise when designing a new product. The recognition of its commitment came in 2019 when one of Cantisa’s most innovative designs, the grid-effect edgeband, won the prestigious High Product Quality Interzum Award. As part of its innovative efforts, and to keep close to its customers in the context of the pandemic, Cantisa has developed a new virtual customiser, meant to inspire designers and furniture manufacturers by enabling them to choose from hundreds of edgeband and board designs. Choose any of the available boards, from the main manufacturers in the market, then select one of the 300-plus references of Cantisa’s edgebands – new references are uploaded every week. Designers and manufacturers will discover unlimited design possibilities, and will find new decorative alternatives that can be saved and shared. It is possible to transform the plain and simple into something extraordinary with Cantisa’s edgeband décor programme, says the specialist. Veneer in rolls for edging & profile wrapping Even with the endless array of new styles and designs, wood furniture continues to be popular around the world. Cantisa is drawn to wooden
furniture because it has a history, is solid, and boasts great detail – and because, above all, nature and quality go hand in hand. Wood is a traditional raw material, which also enables experimenting and the creation of new decorative edgings thanks to its textures, finishes and natural patterns. In Cantisa’s factory, wood veneer is carefully classified, thus providing uniform colour and a high quality. The company says its innovative wood veneer products never cease to surprise the market. One of its best-known veneer products is the solid end-grain edgeband, which is manufactured with a natural cross-cut veneer,
following the natural shape of the wood and giving the piece a stripboard appearance. As the edgeband is made of natural veneer. it transfers the warmth and texture of wood to the furniture. Furthermore, both surface and edgeband can be varnished or dyed in the same way, with impressive results. Another of their most innovative products is the OSB made from chips of real wood. This edgeband achieves the same look as an OSB board, and can be varnished or dyed easily, achieving exactly the same effect as on the surface. Cantisa believes in sustainability and the use of natural resources, which is why, since 2011, its products have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), ensuring its wood comes from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious and economically viable. Cantisa’s veneer product range includes thick veneer edgebanding, veneer rolls for profile wrapping and veneer strips. PVC and ABS edgebanding Although the company has been tied to veneer products since its foundation, Cantisa also specialises in melamine, PVC and ABS edgebanding, and has more than 2500 edgebanding references in its catalogue today. Cantisa’s product range is constantly updated with what it describes as the most original and innovative edgebands on the market. Cantisa works closely with the main melamine board manufacturers, offering their customers the equivalent edgebands in a very short period of time. The edgebanding specialist can also copy any other design and texture in a record time, even for small productions. By simply browsing its decors online, a furniture manufacturer can find edgebands with the right gloss and embossing for any board in the market, states Cantisa. www.cantisa.es

Growing together Norfolk Oak prides itself on doing things differently. Creating up to 150 bespoke kitchens every month from its 100,000ft2 premises in Fakenham, the kitchen manufacturer has carved out an enviable niche, offering high-end kitchens and doors to architects, designers and residential clients online. But, when faced with the challenge of applying a paintable PVC edging to a smooth panel door, Norfolk Oak turned to Holz-Her UK for the solution. “I don’t buy equipment, I buy solutions to problems,” admits Jamie Everett, MD of Norfolk Oak. “We needed to apply a PVC edge to a panel door which, in turn, would then be painted. On the surface, this may sound simple, but with a flat, smooth door, we use a HDF substrate. The surface layer is made from melamine, which is made up of 30 layers of craft paper, with each layer glued and pressed together. It gives you a really lovely, smooth finish, but, when you cut it on a CNC, you end up with HDF edges. “When you’re using water-based paint to finish the door, it fluffs up and makes it difficult to work. If you don’t get the glue line and edge down to two or three hundredths of a millimetre, you’ll see every single imperfection once it has been painted. For us, that was simply not an option. We needed an edgebander that could apply a perfect, paintable edge to our door panels quickly and efficiently.”
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 32
Having worked with Weinig UK for 15 years, purchasing both solid timber machinery and, more recently, panel-processing equipment (including three flatbed CNCs and a pod-andrail CNC from its sister company, Holz-Her UK), Jamie understands the importance of investing in good quality equipment. “Our thought processes are completely aligned, and I trust them implicitly,” he says. “That’s why they are my go-to problem solvers. They said we needed a Lumina 1598 with a ReturnMaster panel return system, and they were right. It ticks every box, and offers an absolutely perfect edge, every time.” So, how did the Lumina 1598 help Norfolk Oak achieve its objective? As well as being fitted with a patented GJ 702 Glu Jet system, capable of working with EVA and PUR cartridges and granulates to
reduce downtime and glue cost, the Holz-Her edgebander comes with a wealth of automated features to provide enhanced speed, accuracy and versatility. The Multipurpose Package delivers automatic, program-driven profile changing to the fine trimming, corner rounding and profile scraper units (changing from 1.3 to 2mm to 45° chamfer to 8mm flush). The edgebander also includes iTronic as standard. This facilitates adaptive precise pressure to the pressing station, and glue quantity control to the GJ702 Glu Jet. The result is a repeatable (by program recall) glue dose, for a near-zero glue line. It also features automatic remaining glue coverage monitoring and an automatic flush feature for easy cleaning of PUR. The machine’s fa.s.t technology also allows for different operations to be carried out while panels are still within the machine. This means the operator no longer has to wait for panels to exit before moving onto the next production phase. Plus, with finishing units – including an extra set of buffers for the rounded corners and sprayers – this machine delivers finished panels to an exceptional standard. “The automated processes make this a phenomenally quick piece of kit,” says Jamie. “Capable of running at 25m/min, one operator can run a whole kitchen – normally 200 panels – through the machine in under an hour. The same process would have taken two people at least 2.5 hours on our old machine.” The ReturnMaster panel return system makes one-man operations easy, but it is also providing other important benefits, says Jamie: “It was a big investment – around 35% of the total cost of the package – but it’s around five times faster than its predecessor. This offers huge labour savings, and by that I don’t just mean an operator’s hourly rate. It comes down to cost and allocation of resources, too. I predict that the whole setup will pay for itself within two years, probably sooner.”

The GJ720 GluJet system
The quality of the panels coming off the Lumina has also been a gamechanger for Jamie: “Our old edgebander needed to be manually adjusted with an Allen key, and it didn’t offer any automatic quality-control settings. It made the process more labour-intensive, and as a result, boards would often need to be pre-processed to eliminate visible imperfections. “Since our Lumina 1598 was installed, we have had virtually zero remedials at the production stage and we haven’t had any customer remedials from our edging work, either. Automation makes this side of our production more efficient – the tolerances are microscopic and each panel is perfect before it goes to be painted. That said, we still hand-finish and check every panel for peace of mind. That will never change.” Keen to continue the blend of traditional and modern manufacturing techniques, Jamie’s motivation to invest remains strong. “You can’t let old machinery and technology define your business model. You will get left behind. We are constantly trying to find new and innovative ways to do things that, ultimately, set us apart from the rest. “In a manufacturing business, it’s not like steering a sports car, it’s like steering an oil

tanker. You need to be a long way ahead of the curve to make sure you’re going the right way. “Holz-Her has been instrumental in this. They work with me, not for me. Replacing old with new isn’t the right approach for me. We can’t afford to get complacent. We tell Holz-Her what we want to achieve, and they find solutions. They know their stuff, they understand our company, and it shows. But for me, above all else, they show integrity. It’s not a common trait to find in business, but if there is integrity,
The Lumina’s finishing section includes profile scrapers, surface scrapers, top and bottom buffers and corner buffers
everything else will fall into place. That’s why we work well together.” What’s next for Norfolk Oak? We may be in uncharted waters with Covid-19 and Brexit, but Jamie has his next move clearly mapped out: “It may seem like a curious time to make investments in our manufacturing processes, but we don’t need growth to justify these purchases. Collectively, they will increase production speed, grow our capacity and offer

us more control and organisation throughout our business. “Financially, the period of return is too great for most people to want to do this. We want to do it because it will add to the smooth running of the operation and give us the flexibility to offer a broader range of products as the market demands. To me, that’s worth every penny. and with Weinig and Holz-Her by our side, we know we’ll always be leading from the front. ” www.holzher.co.uk

Homag’s airTec system produces perfect edges for Atelier Joinery
Innovation and craftsmanship are the cornerstones of Macclesfield based Atelier Joinery’s business. Founded in 2010, the company focuses on two key markets: premium bespoke furniture for the residential market and on the trade side, upscale bars and restaurants. “Each member of the Atelier team shares a collective passion and drive for the work we do,” explains Simon Albiston, the company’s finance director. He continues: “We seek quality in all that we do, from the work we produce to the materials and machinery we use. “As a result, the business has grown significantly over the last few years and our client base has become more discerning and demanding. One area that was causing us
concern was the quality of our edge banding which we felt had the potential to let us down, particularly when using plain colours where joints are more visible. ” Investing in Homag “When it comes to machine quality, the one brand name that always surfaces is Homag; they have a great reputation for producing the very best equipment and software in the woodworking industry. So naturally, they were the first name on our short list of three. “Although the other two brands we looked at had good machines, there were two key benefits that convinced us that Homag offered the perfect solution for Atelier. Firstly, its airTec edging system was mighty impressive

when we saw it demonstrated at Homag’s Castle Donington showroom. Even using plain materials, the joint was just about invisible. “Secondly, Homag’s service backup is unique within the industry. We’ve had our fingers burnt in the past, but you know you can rely on Homag. They have the size and financial strength to support their customers with their own engineers. It makes such a difference to know that they have your back when issues arise.” Edgeteq S-240 airTec “It was these two advantages that clinched the deal for us and with the help of Homag’s Jon Lawman we settled on the Edgeteq S-240 airTec edge bander. With the work we had in the pipeline, we were keen to get the machine as soon as possible. Luckily, Jon managed to secure an ex-demonstration model for us that was available almost immediately. “Every aspect of the purchase was handled professionally by Homag including the setting up of a finance package through Homag Finance and Deutsche Leasing. They made it

easy and stressless which was great.” For joiners with high-end requirements, the Edgeteq S-240 airTec is the ideal machine. Whether for production of the perfect zerojoint or for other edge processing, the machine consistently delivers first class results. The nerve centre of the machine is the gluing unit, which alongside the airTec activation unit also acts as a dual solution, guaranteeing outstanding flexibility. Next to the gluing unit, the machine is equipped with a joint trimming unit, a two-motor snipping unit, a trimming unit and a profile trimming unit. A radius scraper and a buffing unit ensure a perfect finish. The airTec models for the Edgeteq S-240s series are characterised by their high level of automation and a comprehensive range of processing units. Control of the Edgeteq S-240 is via the powerTouch widescreen HD monitor that allows machine functions to be controlled directly by touch. The entire programming interface is optimised for powerTouch operation and offers numerous new help and assistant functions that make working processes substantially easier. The Edgeteq S-240 range offers comprehensive solutions for the flexible and economical manufacture of products. Whether living room, bedroom or kitchen furniture, functional office furniture, superior shopfitting solutions or batch size 1 production for bespoke requirements, the Edgeteq edge banders are designed for the tasks. Well-orchestrated installation Simon Albiston takes up the story again: “We were super-impressed with the way Homag went about the installation process. Shortly after we’d agreed to buy the machine they booked the installation dates with us. Then Stuart Hinds from Homag came out to survey the site prior to installation to make sure all the
necessary preparation would be in place when the machine arrived. “Given the challenging access to our building this was critically important and Stuart’s thorough and professional approach impressed us. The machine duly arrived on the specified date and was installed and commissioned on time. One of the installation engineers gave our staff a day’s training on the Edgeteq S-240 and we were up and running. It couldn’t have been made easier.” Outstanding results “The machine has been operational now for almost a year and the results have been outstanding. The quality of the products we can produce now has increased dramatically. The Edgeteq has given us complete confidence that none of our competitors can produce a better product than us. We know that whatever materials we are working with the Homag machine will deliver a virtually invisible glue line. That is such a great benefit for our business. “In terms of service, on the odd occasion when we have had an issue with the machine, Homag’s engineers have been quick to respond. They always sort the problem and get us back up and running with the minimum of delay. That’s something we really appreciate, because downtime not only costs us money, but can also potentially cause us to miss delivery dates which in turn can damage our reputation.” A thoroughly professional team delivering affordable quality “Overall, it seems to us that Homag’s business is very well organised and structured. The company is not reliant on any third parties, so everything is in its control and that gives us, as a customer, tremendous peace of mind. “Indeed, everything about Homag gives us confidence. The team of people at Homag UK are friendly yet professional and, despite the fact that we are a relatively small joinery firm and Homag is the industry’s global market leader, they look after us brilliantly. They seem committed to giving smaller businesses excellent service. “As is well documented, Homag’s product range offers premium quality solutions. Yet despite popular opinion, the investment levels required for its entry level models are surprisingly affordable when you consider what you get. “The initial outlay for a Homag machine may well be more than some others on the market, but in our opinion, the lifetime value of partnering with Homag far outweighs such considerations. At the end of the day, we’ve found that you can rely one hundred per cent on Homag; underlining that ultimately, you get what you pay for.” concludes Simon Albiston. While the trend towards black elements in interiors continues, people also seek more cosiness and quality furnishings in their homes. Real wood surfaces meet these requirements, and can be combined with black, accentuating elements to create spaces of modern homeliness. Ostermann now holds the matching edging in its range.
High-grade wood veneer meets the latest trend – Dark Elegance on the edge Ostermann’s experts in edging offer a good selection of veneer edgings for high-quality furniture. The latest addition to the range is a black-dyed variant. The new black-coloured Oak Wood veneer edging sanded offers users a wide range of design options, for individual interiors with a feelgood factor. It is available in widths of 24, 33 or 43mm and in thicknesses of 1 and 2mm. The finish is natural and homogeneously coloured through real oak veneer. The base layers are made of fineline veneers. Craftsmen can find further details and technical information on www.ostermann.eu, under the search item Highlights122020.
The new edgings can be used to add a dark touch to any kind of chipboard panel with an oak veneer, resulting in individual furniture with a particularly sophisticated look.
Black – a persistent trend Black furniture elements are still in high demand. They are increasingly used as a modern contrast to natural wood decors, resulting in an extraordinary look that incorporates elegance and snugness. The newmblack-dyed oak veneer edging from Ostermann reflects the trend nicely. It captivates, with its grained wood surface in jet black, and acts as a mediator between real wood and black furniture elements.
Hotmelt adhesive or zero bondline coating available For easy processing, a bonding agent is applied to the reverse side of Ostermann’s veneer edgings as standard. Upon request, customers can obtain the new edging with a hotmelt adhesive coating or a functional layer for processing with zero bondline technologies. 01905 793550 s.parsons@ostermann.eu www.ostermann.eu
The natural way In these rather hectic times, the home becomes either a place of retreat or a combination of living and working area. In both cases, a cosy atmosphere is more important. Besides the natural design of their living spaces, people set great store by the use of sustainable resources. The regrowing natural product veneer is suitable for creating impressive colour homogeneity, and offers high quality.

Exciting new adhesive from Henkel Edgebanding PUR adhesives dominate the market. Over the years, PUR adhesives have been more accessible to customers who are edging, and as technologies advance, PUR adhesives’ outstanding performance has become available to all edging customers, delivering the finished goods to the highest standards. A disadvantage with standard PUR adhesives is the line speed, running around 10-35m/minute, and with large-scale industry moving towards line speeds of 30-80m/minute, Henkel leapt into action and developed Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME, which enables clean processing on very high machine speeds of up to 80m/ minute, delivering the highest bond strength on all common edgeband materials. Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME is designed to run on straight edgeand soft-forming edgebanders on medium-to-high speed lines for bonding solid wood, veneer, melamine, polyester, PVC, ABS, PP

and HPL to core boards. It offers all the benefits of PUR technology with the added feature of very low stringing and smearing.
Unmatched moisture and heat resistance A further added benefit of Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME is that it offers MicroEmission PUR technology without the hazardous labelling, making it more environmentally friendly and safer for operators to handle. Henkel is always very mindful of health and safety, and with companies seeking safer options with PUR adhesives, this solution would allow them to improve their operating procedures while at the same time reducing risk – Technomelt PUR 270-5 fits right in. Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME is designed for maximum output rates with PUR quality and the highest standards in occupation safety. With MicroEmission technology and fully REACHcompliant, Technomelt PUR 270-5 ME adhesive “really is the future for customers and the planet”, states Henkel. “We have your application covered, and the environmental impact reduced. So why not improve your microclimate at the same time as improving your production, by changing to Technomelt PUR 270-5 MicroEmission adhesive?”
The Henkel name is quite rightly associated with quality and marketleading technologies, and this does not purely apply to its adhesives, but also to its extensive range of hotmelt cleaners, which cover everything from surface cleaning through to thorough system/ application equipment cleaning. Given that an effective cleaning process can make all the difference to meeting deadlines, maximising output and achieving daily goals, Henkel says it is here to help set customers on the right path and ensure they are getting the most out of their day. 42 SANDING & ABRASIVES
Sanding & Abrasives Gibbs SandTech, impressive low cost solutions alongside custom made machines UK sanding technology manufacturer, Gibbs Sandtech, has, over the years, successfully developed a range of machinery and ancillary items for the UK woodworking sector. Having been successfully supplying the industry for the last 60 years, they are continually advancing new ideas and technologies in to their product range. The latest development is a unique through feed denibber, called the CB. It is available in 630mm, 930mm and 1330mm widths. It has a very low entry level price tag, yet Gibbs says that it comes with all the features of high end machines. The CB boasts full variable speed control for all functions, along with electric rise and fall for the brush sanding heads. “The unique oscillating sanding brush system is capable of sanding and denibbing complex raised and fielded doors, shake style doors as well as flat panels,” explains Gibbs Sandtech director, Warren Gibbs. “The machine can even be fitted with wire brushes to give a grained effect on solid wood frames, complete doors, as well as flat veneered panels. “The heart of the system is a very special brush and abrasive system, also manufactured at the our factory – the abrasive system is available in the full grit range and different length brushes and abrasives. This gives the user great

flexibility in achieving the desired sanding. “The CB also has very low running costs, with customers only having to replace the abrasives around once every three to six months and replacement sets, starting from under £100. “Being a fully UK-produced machine, at the our factory in Hertfordshire, so quality and precision are guaranteed – to ensure peace of mind all machines are sold with a full 12 months warranty.” Gibbs has also invested time in designing optional extras, such as side sanders for the edges and cleaning blow bars which, according to Gibbs, leaves the exiting panel 100% dust free for spraying. “The CB’s denibbing results are second to none, as demonstrated by numbers of machines that have been sold over the last few years. We have also developed a great range of mobile drying racks and spray tables. They are suited for small and large operations alike. All the racks and spray tables are designed and manufactured in-house and fit budgets and requirements from one man workshops to large finishing departments,” says Warren. Along with a standard range, Gibbs also offers custom designed racks and spray tables to suit customer’s exact needs. In addition, the company also

offers custom-made machines, providing a one-stop shop, from inhouse design, manufacturing and installation. Having been making custom machines for over 40 years, Gibbs has a wealth of knowledge and experience in many areas – customers from small companies to multinational PLC’s have had machines built by Gibbs Sandtech. Projects generally are never the same,” says Warren, “and we work with a blank sheet of paper at the initial concept stage so the finished design can meet every detailed requirement of the customer. Most are truly unique designs suited to individual processes incorporating
handling, machining, clamping or sanding processes.” Gibbs also has a wealth of experience in RF (high frequency) used for rapid glue curing – sometimes combining several processes in to one machine. Concluding, Warren says: “Custom designed machines can sometimes be a standalone unit, part- or even an entire production line. For any custom or unique requirements, then the one stop shop of Gibbs Sandtech should definitely you first port of call.” 01920 822404 info@gibbsfinishing.com www.gibbsfinishing.com

MB Maschinenbau invests in virtual showroom MB Maschinenbau, now in its 25th year, has been steadily building an international profile as a market specialist in the field of brushsanding technology. 2020 will go down in history for all the wrong reasons, but it has presented MB, like all good companies, with the challenge of working even smarter. The early part of 2020 saw the introduction of the new Roba Profi Brush sanding machine, and in September MB opened its doors to a new virtual showroom. Early on in the Covid-19 pandemic, Ronald Busch, the company’s founder, made the decision to invest in multimedia capabilities for the showroom. It now has the ability to run live, real-time demonstrations using the customers’ components on sanding trials, and beam this back to the customer (also in real-time). The MB range of brush-sanding and cleaning

technology are ideal partners for kitchen manufacturers, joinery and timber/MDF moulding operations. Full range The range splits into surface sanding and denibbing, with the Roba Tech, Roba Split Belt and Profi Brush machines for entrance doors, kitchen cabinet doors and flat panels. For profile sanding and denibbing joinery parts and timber/ MDF mouldings, the machines are the Roba profile, Roba Belt and Fentech. Covering surface cleaning, there are two machines: the Roba Anti Dust, for cleaning of parts prior to lacquer application, lamination or packing; and the Profi Clean, for cleaning the backside of thermofoiled doors or laminated furniture parts. The new Roba Profi Brush, launched in July last year, was developed to meet the
increasing demands on customers painting with water-based primers and lacquers. The main principle of the Roba Profi Brush is to sand in all directions, with opposing movements. Only sanding from right to left, left to right and with and against the feeding direction can ensure that all upstanding timber fibres are denibbed. The machine is modular in construction, and can be configured to meet customers’ demands, with working widths up to 2m – even machines for heavy timber distressing work can be accommodated. Things have not stood still at MB, and anyone who would like to make their move to “sanding perfection” should speak to the team at John Penny Woodworking Machinery to arrange a live demonstration or trial on their products. 01235 531700 www.john.penny@btconnect.com www.mb-maschinenbau.de

DEOS Delta is flawless from corner to corner Mirka has expanded its impressive Direct Electric Orbital Sander (DEOS) range with the addition of the DEOS Delta. Its ergonomic and innovative iron shape design allows users to access hard to reach areas easily and efficiently, while reducing the stress on arms and hands, and delivering a flawless smooth finish from corner to corner.
The Delta’s low 10cm profile ensures it is closer to the surface at any angle, allowing for increased control of the sanding process, even during long periods of use. Weighing less than 1kg, there is less risk of arm fatigue. The sander also incorporates a powerful brushless motor and 3mm orbit for more effective removal of stock, while keeping vibrations at a low level to minimise the risk of HAVs. Additionally, when the DEOS Delta is combined with Mirka’s net abrasives and a dust extraction unit, it provides a consistent scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment to work in.
Pete Sartain, national sales manager industrial of Mirka UK, says: “The R&D team is in constant communication both internally and externally to understand what the market is looking for, so this addition is the next phase in the evolution of the DEOS product range. The addition of new Mirka DEOS Delta meets a gap in the market as users are looking for a lightweight, powerful and versatile delta sander and we are confident customers will benefit from its technological, health & safety and performance attributes from its first use.” www.mirka.com/uk
Mirka enables sanding of narrow gaps A new extension pad to enhance the versatility of the Mirka DEOS 353 CV 81x 133 has been launched. The pad’s overhang will enable users to sand further into corners and hard-to-reach areas, while delivering the high-quality smooth finish synonymous with the DEOS range. The new pad is versatile enough to handle multiple applications, but has been specifically developed for sanding window shutters and sash windows, which have traditionally been tricky to reach with a normal orbital sander because the slats are narrow and difficult to access.
The Mirka DEOS is the only electric orbital sander on the market that has been optimised for net abrasives by incorporating more than 45 holes in the pad. When the tool is combined with Mirka’s net and paper abrasives, it offers an impressive scratch pattern and a dust-free work environment. Its innovative features incorporate a powerful brushless motor, which provides a high powerto-weight ratio when in use. Pete Sartain, national sales manager – industrial of Mirka UK, says: “As a business, we want to provide the right tool for the job at hand.
Our R&D team has listened to what customers require for jobs they are working on, which has led to the design and development of the new extension pad. We believe this pad will increase the versatility of the DEOS 353 by making it easier for users to reach difficult, hard-to-reach areas, making sanding narrow gaps a thing of the past.” www.mirka.com/uk

CNC Machinery HPC Laser is a leading UK supplier of laser engraving, cutting machines and CNC routers. Established in 2006 the Elland, West Yorkshire company has supplied over 5000 machines to sign-making, education, trophy engravers and a wide range of other industrial and private customers for an almost infinite array of applications.
Premium standard plastic, metal and woodworking routers from HPC Laser All machines are supplied complete with on-site delivery, installation and training and covered by a minimum 12-month onsite warranty. With a team of nationwide installation and service engineers and lifetime telephone and e mail technical support, help is never far away when you need it. “Smaller desktop routers are available from other suppliers, but these are generally intended for relatively light use,” explains HPC Laser director, Steve Cockerham, “HPC’s router range starts with a more industrial LS6090 machine with a 600mm x 900mm bed size. “Even with a machine of this modest size, the compact arrangement is able to accommodate a 3.5kW air-cooled spindle motor which is frequency inverter driven, providing ramped acceleration and deceleration, elimination of high in-rush currents and seamless choice of operating speeds up to 18,000rpm. “Even HPC’s entry level industrial machines such as the LS6090 are available with a wide range of upgrades including water cooled spindle motors with operating speeds up to 24,000rpm, vacuum bed and automatic tool change options. “CNC router technology has advanced significantly over the past few years with the most significant developments being in travel speeds and positional accuracy, automated

FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 48
toolchange options and enhanced features for automated operation and software integration,” says Steve. HPC believes that one of the most practical machine developments in recent years has been the technological improvements made in spindle motor and frequency inverter technology. Prior to this technology being introduced, more traditional machines used fixed-speed mainsfed spindle motors with speed changes being offered through a variety of methods – including belts and pulleys and mechanical speed variators. “Because mains-supplied AC electric motors are supplied via a fixed frequency 50Hz supply, they are unable to vary their operating speed – an interesting point, the no-load motor speed (RPM) is equal to 60 times the supply frequency (Hz) divided by half of the number of motor poles,” points out Steve. “Hence a two-pole motor on 50Hz would run at 3000rpm, a four-pole motor at 1500rpm and so on…” “Frequency inverters work by rectifying the AC electrical supply to DC and then switching this DC supply at incredible speeds to output a synthetic three phase sinusoidal supply, a process known as pulse width modulation. “The key ability of this system is to vary the output supply frequency. This means that a two-
pole motor that would usually run at 3000rpm on a 50Hz supply can now operate at 24,000rpm when driven by the frequency inverters synthetic supply at 400Hz. “A major benefit to this technology is that the motor-frequency inverter combination offers infinitely variable speed options between 0-24,000rpm – the maximum speed usually limited only by the mechanical constraints of the motor – hence the reason why an air-cooled motor cannot operate at the higher speeds of a water-cooled motor. Usually the ventilation fan limits the maximum speed of the air-cooled motor. “Significant CNC router developments in recent years have included the migration to heavier duty fabricated steel and cast iron beds, improving dimensional accuracy, reducing vibration and ultimately contributing to improved repeatability and in most cases a vastly superior cutting finish.” Such recent developments in machine features together with modular designs – and the lean and flexible manufacturing systems of today – mean that customers can now purchase a cost-effective tailor made machine, configured to suit exact needs and expectations faster than ever before. CNC router technology, especially considering the recent advances in specification, have left modern machines wanting for few, if any additional features. Indeed, it almost feels like we have reached the pinnacle of innovation in CNC router development. “When considering one can now buy a CNC router with an almost infinite spindle speed range and a plethora of standard features and optional extras such as vacuum bed, toolchange devices, fourth axis and multiple spindle arrangements for such attractive prices, it is difficult to imagine what new developments might be next. Steve concludes: “However, as with many products and industries, continual innovation, research and technological development will bring about new machine features that will make us wonder how we ever managed without them!” 01422 310800 www.hpclaser.co.uk

50 CNC MACHINERY
Combining traditional craftsmanship with the latest technology, VWM has become a leading name in the woodworking industry, specialising in CNC and classic woodworking machinery.
“Magnificent” 2020 paves the way, with more to come, says VWM From its head office and showroom in Lancashire, the company manufactures, supplies and maintains woodworking machinery for a wide range of furniture and joinery businesses worldwide, with teams of technical experts on-hand to ensure the highest possible standard of customer service. “Our key product lines comprise a full range of panel and joinery machines, available from a stock of over 200,” explains VWM’s sales director, Jason Varey.
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 50
“We also hold a stock of four CNC routers at any one time, covering our full range: the Start machine for the entry-level user; the ECO Machine for the more advanced user looking for different configurations; the MD Machine, an advanced-user machine with greater feed rates than our ECO, Start and PC-driven options; as well as the HD Machine, which is a topline machine available with panel loading/unloading, fast feed rates and multiple head options. “Our core strength is that we are very much
in control of the manufacture of our Technos machines, having been involved with them since 2002 and selling over 80 machines over the years. Our engineers have been involved with the manufacture of the machine – we are not an agency, and we have full control over service and spares on our machines, unlike others who need to revert to the manufacturer when issues arise! We hold spare parts on the shelf and a stock of machinery for technical support. “Our range stands out, as we cater from the

entry-level user right up to a serious production unit, giving the customer confidence to grow with our Technos brand from the start. I also believe that our technical know-how is second-to-none – we are CNC technicians, not salespeople. “A typical customer comes to us to start with CNC, and we have seen this many times. With VWM, the customer has the chance to grow with us and develop his know-how – as an example, we have many customers who bought machines from 2002 and now have several machines from us. “One in particular has an impressive nine Technos machines. So, he becomes a partner of VWM, not a customer – he also has the same engineers servicing his machines as when he started in 2003.
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 51
“2020 has been a magnificent year for us, with total CNCs coming to 23 machines this year! Just missing on one a month, but we will be trying for that next year!” Concluding, Jason says: “We plan to further develop our Start range of CNC routers, starting with a new machine coming into stock in February, with fast feed speeds and variations of table sizes. Also, we have several new classical machines coming out, with a new range of tenoners and boring machines landing in January.” VWM has a full stock of classical machines and new Technos CNC machining centres, ready for delivery and demonstration. www.vwm.co.uk

New Centauro ALFA Twin – CNC milling machine for doors and frames Following on from the successful Centauro ALFA CNC milling/ slotting machine, of which more than 60 have been installed in the UK to date, Centauro has introduced the all-new ALFA Twin
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 52
model, which is a dedicated CNC milling machine for internal doors and frames. The main advantage of the Twin over the standard machine is that a door can be simultaneously machined on both sides at the same time, without having to manually move or turn it. The result is a machined door with three hinge recesses, lock slot, face plate recess and handle/key hole in approximately two minutes. In addition, it is possible to machine two linings/jambs – again, both at the same time. As standard, the ALFA Twin is equipped with six adjustable vacuum cups to hold the door in position while it is being machined. By utilising this system, both sides of the door can be fully machined without having to take into account the position of mechanical or pneumatic clamps, which, of course, are not needed. For machining of the lock slot and drilling/slotting for the handle
hole/key slot, there is a router head that automatically works in either the vertical or horizontal, and has a travel distance in the X axis of 2800mm and in the Y axis of 150mm (although optionally this can be extended to 600mm). On the opposite side there is a horizontal milling head that is used for producing the hinge recesses – again with a 2800mm X axis travel. On request it is possible to equip either one or both sides with an additional horizontal milling head that can be used to make the small pilot hole for hinge or lock screws and/or to machine a square corner hinge or lock recess. Fast and easy programming When processing linings/jambs, adjustable pneumatic clamps are fitted. Programming is extremely quick and simple, thanks to the latest-generation 10in graphic colour touchscreen controller, with pre-installed electronic macro templates.
Door width working capacity is maximum 950mm and minimum 650mm, but optionally this can be increased to 1100 and 800mm, respectively. Other options include motorised positioning of the door on driven belts, infeed and outfeed roller tables, and an uprated router head motor of 5.6kW. Exclusive UK agent JJ Smith has an ALFA Twin set up and readily available for demonstration in its Liverpool showroom. The company believes this competitively priced machine will prove ideal for the many companies which need a quick, simple and efficient machine for processing doors and linings. In addition to offering the ALFA and Twin models, JJ Smith also supplies a range of throughfeed, high-volume door production lines from specialist manufacturer Essepegi. 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

The AES Group is a highly successful international supplier of one of the most comprehensive ranges of heavy duty, high quality industrial CNC machines available today – at prices which represnt tremendous value for money.
Impressive CNC solutions ideal for a wide range of applications The strengths of the AES CNC machines can be quite clearly seen in the heavy-duty construction of the frames, which endow its machines with high positioning and processing speeds to allow maximum productivity. These machines generally weigh more than most to readily absorb positioning speeds which start at 70m/min – and they are built to ensure longterm reliability and accuracy. “If you were to strip down an AES machine, you would see that only the frame and assembly takes place in their manufacturing plant of over 170,000ft2 in Bursa, Turkey,” explains J & C O’Meara MD, Carl O’Meara, “and all the working parts are from the leading sources including Becker vacuum pumps, HSD router and drill heads, Yasakawa inverter drives, THK linear guides, Schmaltz vacuum pod and consoles, Osai controllers and so forth. Quality process Every one of the 300 machines produced every year goes through a number of stringent and rigorous quality checks and procedures to ensure every machine meets or exceeds customer expectation. “Every AES machine comes complete with industry leading Alphacam CAD/CAM software, starting with Essential 2D which can be upgraded to further packages depending upon customer requirements and of course allowing every customer the possibility to ‘grow’ with the machine,” explains Carl. Door production With a choice of three and five-axis machines, AES has several solutions depending upon customer requirements. One of the most popular choices is the AES Vega Evo which has a 9Kw router head and double sided 5.5Kw dedicated horizontal router head to machine pockets for locks and recesses for hinges. The easy-to-use AES door macro allows

one-off programming in minutes, which include final sizing of the door blank, machining of locks, hinges, keyway, handle hole, rebates and eurogrooves. Spy holes and cut outs for letterbox and vision panels can also be added with ease. Panel processing From the entry level Flexa/Flexa Pro to the stand alone Super Nova to the heavy duty Extreme and Raptor Ultra machines – which can be supplied as automated line machines – AES has possibly one of the largest series of flatbed/nesting machines available. As manufacturers’ requirements – and indeed budgets – are different, AES has a range of machines to suit most industrial requirements with each series of machine having the choice of several bed sizes depending upon maximum size sheet to be cut. Drilling The AES Sirius is a throughfeed drilling machine, again offering the traditional heavy-duty rugged structure and using all quality, branded components. This machine has the option of a router and also the option of a six-position toolchanger, giving it large machine capabilities in a smaller space. The Vega is the stand-alone solution for modular furniture or processing door blanks and is available with a dedicated horizontal router head and C axis.
Five-axis The five-axis machines are becoming more and more the norm. The AES Vega five axis machine has a gantry construction to ensure ultimate stability when machining all round and is complete with a liquid cooled 11Kw HSD infinity head which can offer 360° endless machining to give a seamless finish. This machine is also complete with the powerful Alphacam Ultimate CAD/CAM software. Training One of the country’s leading woodworking machinery dealers, J & C O’Meara is well placed to offer advice on the best software solution to allow CNC machines to be integrated into any existing working environment, whether a customer is new to CNC or even if a third-party CAD/CAM package is already being used. J & C O’Meara’s experienced team is also available to offer practical advice on machining styles, strategies and automation. “Our training is not only about showing the function of the software but taking a customer from design through to production and includes pre-delivery training, training on site, along with on-going training,” concludes Carl. 01704 893 109 www.ukwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk

58 ADHESIVES
Adhesives Henkel PU Dispersions for 3D lamination When buying a new kitchen, it is often the first glance which draws one in – something catches the eye, and that kitchen can be quickly visualised within a home. This is often driven by what is fashionable at the time, and in many ways is why kitchen design and manufacturing is constantly evolving to keep up with current trends. Popular with many consumers are the PVC foil-fronted kitchens, as they offer a variety of options and finishes – whether that be high gloss or a more traditional front, either shaped or smooth. The process involved to produce this type of work is technical and requires precision, and a level of quality from all the materials involved. One such material that plays a vital role within this process is the adhesive, as it not only provides a bond, but gives confidence and reliability to the
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 58
manufacturer and their production process. Through Kenyon’s partnership with Henkel, the former is able to offer this level of assurance with its range of PU Dispersions for 3D lamination, under the brand name Aquence. Already well established in both the UK and Europe, one-component and two-component options are available to suit the different needs within the manufacturing process, with each offering distinct advantages and benefits. Aquence FD 150/6 is Kenyon’s one-component PU Dispersion. It offers the maximum reliability at the lowest activation temperatures, starting from 50°C (high gloss). In addition, manufacturers get the highest heat and moisture resistance with all commonly available foil qualities, and the optical surface characteristics due to impressive spraying features.
With the two-component systems, human error is always a possibility, and Kenyon says that the onecomponent offering eradicates this, along with any pot-life worries. Aquence FD 151 is the company’s two-component PU Dispersion. especially suited for presses without membrane, and sealable at the lowest temperatures.
Like the one-component, users get the highest heat resistance, which works well for high gloss and thin foils, along with the impressive spray characteristic on the edge. To help with the technical process, there are the Pro Tools available for 3D Thermoforming. One such tool, the 3D Profiler, offers manufacturers the ability to look within their process, ensuring that every parameter is covered and operating correctly. This wireless system provides simultaneous measurements of the different processing parameters, which include surface and edge temperatures, foil temperatures, humidity beneath the foil, along with pressure measurements – all of which make it a vital tool to have at one’s disposal. With these options available to Kenyon’s technical team, its portfolio of 3D Dispersions and supporting tools provides everything needed to operate at the maximum level and produce the desired standard of work. Anyone who feels their production lines could benefit from a conversation with Kenyon’s technical department should get in touch with the team, which will advise on how best Kenyon can help with their specific application requirements. 0161 627 1001 salesteam@kenyon-group.co.uk www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Carving out a career From hairdresser, to pub owner, to furniture crafter – how one man’s creative career path took him back to nature …
Derek Annand’s commute to work takes less than a minute, but each second of that journey provides more than enough creative inspiration to fuel his day. Derek lives and works within the impressive Carbeth Guthrie Estate in Blanefield, Scotland, surrounded by fields, hills and forests – an idyllic location for any craftsman and designer. However, for Derek, the journey to get to where he is today was anything but swift and idyllic. In fact, his journey features as many knots, burrs, twists and turns as the wood he now transforms into things of beauty. It has taken Derek years to navigate his unique career path, with a lifechanging accident threatening to end it all. But at last, he is content. To truly understand what drives Derek, one need only step inside his workshop. Derek is the founder of Tabula Rasa Design, which specialises in bespoke, hand-crafted furniture, made from live-edge timber. The Tabula Rasa Design workshop features a showstopping mezzanine level which stands proud, and as the lighting changes throughout the day it morphs from a whimsical treehouse, which exemplifies Derek’s free-spirited creativity, into an imposing cathedral-like structure where fallen trees are reincarnated. Hailing from Glasgow, it was clear from a young age that he had an affinity with the artistic, a keen eye for design, and a stylistic flair. And so, at the age of just 16, Derek moved to Harrogate to embark upon a career as a hairdresser. However, an urge to see more of the world, live, learn and adventure meant he leapt at the chance to move
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 63
to Spain to run a bar three years later. His 20s were spent in the Spanish sun, but by the time he reached his 30s his desire to forge a more creative career path proved too hard to ignore, so he moved to London and enrolled in a course in natural stone-cutting. Painting, decorating and joinery projects followed, with ambitious commissions for commercial refits rolling in. However, a tragic accident meant that all this came to an abrupt end. It was a sunny day in July 2008. Derek was hiking in the Campsie Fells when he spotted a
teenager in difficulty. He jumped off a waterfall and subsequently saved the young man’s life but, in the process, Derek sadly sustained a series of life-changing injuries. The road to recovery was long. He had to learn how to walk again, he underwent multiple surgeries, and at one point it was touch-andgo as an infection took hold. Derek returned to Scotland to recuperate, where it would take six years before he was fully fighting fit again. It was during this time of convalescence that Derek came to realise just how important it is to do something you love with your life. And so, when his strength returned, he completed a course in upcycling, learning all there is to know about sanding, cutting, restoring and making furniture. Finally, everything clicked. The skills he had honed throughout his varied career to date all came together, and he now had a clear vision of where he wanted his life to go. In 2015 he moved to the village of Croftamie and renovated an old barn into a workshop. Tabula Rasa Design was born. Derek found his niche – his trademark designs feature individually hand-cut inlays and patchwork, using rare and exotic timber and metals. From intricate watch boxes to statement dining tables, each piece is a well-balanced blend of functionality and aesthetics. Derek’s guiding philosophy throughout the whole design and manufacturing process is to allow the natural beauty of the wood to speak for itself.

First, he draws up an initial draft design, then he machines the components. Next, he does a trial assembly before modifying the design as necessary, and, only when he is completely happy, will he commence the final construction. Lastly, Derek dedicates a considerable amount of time and effort to getting the finest possible finish on the piece without compromising any of the wood’s intrinsic qualities. As demand for Tabula Rasa Design pieces has increased over the years, so too has Derek’s workshop space. He quickly outgrew his Croftamie base, and so in 2018 moved to the Carbeth Guthrie Estate and began transforming a 6000ft2 warehouse into a workshop and showroom. It is here, beneath the treehouse cathedral that Derek and his good friend painstakingly built by hand, that Derek now shares his knowledge and passion with others in a series of woodworking courses, open to amateurs and experts alike. Covering a variety of traditional and modern carpentry techniques, attendees leave with a completely bespoke wooden item and a wealth of new skills. “Technical skills can be developed with practice and experience. But the key to great woodwork is passion, patience, and attention to detail,” says Derek. “It’s so important to start with the basics – for example, understanding which the most appropriate tool is for the task in hand, sharpening and setting them up correctly so that they do the job they were designed to do as efficiently as possible.”
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 64
Has Derek’s journey through life sharpened his skills and set him up to do the job he was designed to do? “Absolutely,” claims Derek. “For anyone else, it might look like my career path has been far from straightforward. “But, without a doubt, all the training and experiences – both good and bad – over the years have helped me get to where I am today. My work at Tabula Rasa Design enables me to channel a wide range of practical skills into creating something functional and beautiful,
and it gives me more job satisfaction – more life satisfaction, in fact – than anything I’ve done before.” The Tabula Rasa Design workshop and showroom can be found at Carbeth Guthrie Estate, Blanefield, G63 9AT. New Products Beauty and the beast Decorative Panels Lamination produces over 300,000m2 of the highest-quality laminated products each week. Surface finishes range from woodgrain paper foil veneers through to high gloss and matt acrylics, under the brands of dp-specialist, dp-limitless and dp-décor – a collection of designs that promise to inspire and amaze.
Advancements in material technology within the printing industry have brought incredibly high levels of design realism to the finished product. Digital technology used in the creation of the artwork and the engraving of the printing cylinders – plus the development of optical lacquer technology – have contributed to not only the designs’ visual appeal, but have added tactile qualities, too. One of the significant advantages of using paper foil as a surface material is that as well as being flat laminated to a board, it can be profile-wrapped to provide fully matching parts, thus offering a perfect solution for framed doors, corner posts, pelmets and any matching moulding requirements. It is well known that beauty lies in the detail – DP Lamination can offer an extensive range of surface designs incorporating Biomaster

technology (antimicrobial protection), laminated to many different substrates including chipboard, MDF, plywood and dp-lite hollowcore board. In total, DP Lamination offers over 100 different board sizes. Partnering with Addmaster (UK), Decorative Panels can offer products with surfaces that are able to inhibit the growth of bacteria by up to 99.99%.When bacteria comes into contact with ‘the beast’ (a Biomaster-protected surface), the silver ion technology prevents it from growing, producing energy or replicating, and it therefore dies. Next, with the dp-decor range from Decorative Panels Lamination, customers can discover

high levels of design realism. This collection promises to inspire no matter the ambition, no matter the challenge. Some of the latest designs added to the dp-decor range are: Oxide Concrete CF83; Trigolo Black CF80; Greta 3D CF82; and Trigolo White CF81. The beauty of dp-lamination products promises to satisfy every customer’s specification demands. Products are available without commitment to bulk quantities, and deliverable from single sheets up to full loads – customers can just choose the decor and specify the substrate, and Decorative Panels will laminate it for them. www.decorativepanels.co.uk

The new SCM cell for packaging The new packing cell from SCM is an ideal solution for furniture kit manufacturers, and includes two machines: an automatic machine for the JIT cutting and production of an open cardboard box, with the required sizes and shape; and the pack c 100 automatic solution for packaging with hotmelt glue, starting with a pre-cut sheet of cardboard. All the operator has to do is position the product for packaging in the open box, after which, the upper lid is automatically closed by the pack c 10. Thanks to the automatic measurement change setting, packaging can be created with differentsized boxes, positioned in sequence on the roller. Why invest in this cell? * Productive flexibility – the packing cell guarantees top levels, both for high-productivity cycles and in the case of highly customised machinings. This line allows the entire production to be packed rapidly, while also being flexible.
* High productivity levels – the cell enables the packing of up to 800 boxes a shift. * Resource optimisation – the cell requires two to three operators to function, while for the same operations done manually, with the same amount of productivity, at least double that number is required. * Optimising spaces – with the packaging cell, users can avoid the storage of dozens of different box shapes which need to be continually moved with the operators. * Optimisation of the box sizes – the box is packed to meet the actual dimensions of the product. This prevents the use of additional costly packing material and subsequent manpower time. * Perfect packaging – the cell guarantees a flawless, extremely clean-cut, tidy box, states SCM. It also avoids inaccurate angles in the cardboard boxes, generally relying on the packaging done by hand and, as a result, reduces subsequent possible damage to the product caused during transportation. In all, it means easier, betteroptimised transport, with standard, exact boxes, stacked in an orderly fashion – to the extent that an optimisation of space occupied by the boxes is achieved of around 15% for each vehicle.
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 68
cut c 200 The machine has six separate cutting units and longitudinal creasing, and a crossways unit. Positioning themselves independently and simultaneously, thanks to the brushless motor and tilted toothing rack, these units provide high flexibility for box shapes linked to a high level of productivity. The operator calls up the required box from the interface, or by reading a barcode. Lastly, in the more automated lines, the dimensional reading of the product is carried out using a 3D scanner directly to cut c 200. The machine can also be fitted with cardboard box storage of varying widths, in order to optimise the consumption of cardboard according to the sizes of the required box. pack c 100 The machine automatically scans the box sizes using photocells and encoders, to adapt to varying requirements – from mass production to small batch production, right up to batch one. The hotmelt used to close is a quality and precision guarantee in the end packaging, and is a consolidated standard in a number of other product sectors (food, etc.). pack c 100 allows the box to be closed with one or two lines of glue on the sides, depending on the customer’s requirements, and the product’s transfer rollers and stop alignments are driven by means of brushless motors, in order to guarantee maximum rapidity and precision in the execution. www.scmgroup.com

New small-format AXYZ router has enhanced performance-to-cost capability Leading supplier of CNC routing/cutting systems AAG has announced the launch of a new small-format solution. Called the AXYZ Innovator, it replaces the current Z-Series of machines and provides an enhanced performance-to-cost capability founded on new and improved design characteristics. Significantly, the Innovator incorporates many of the design features and performance capabilities of much larger AXYZ machines, but at a commensurately lower cost. Based on the traditional solid steel frame construction for increased rigidity, with an aluminium processing bed and vacuum material clamping deck, the Innovator is available in two standard sizes – 1.2 x 1.2m and 1.5 x 2.4m – with a gantry clearance of 152mm. It features, as standard, a premium rack-andpinion drive system with integrated servomotors, and the AXYZ A2MC machine-control system for faster and smoother machine operation. The machine also comes packaged with Vectric VCarve Pro design and production software to accommodate more complex 2D and 3D applications and to provide compatibility with virtually any alternative popular software program. Available for the first time on any small-format machine in its class, Innovator has an optional three-station ATC (Automatic Tool Change) system to allow continuous processing of a wider range of materials without operator intervention. The ATC incorporates a protective cover to eliminate problems frequently encountered with environmental pollutants such as dust and dirt.
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 71
Other optional features include the latest AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for optimum routing/ cutting accuracy, and special cooling/lubricating and dust-collection systems for improved machine performance and reliability. The compact design of the Innovator makes it ideal for installation at companies where available workspace might be at a premium. These include, for example, those in the general engineering, metal and plastics fabrication, woodworking and sign-manufacturing sectors. It is also an ideal routing/cutting solution for prototyping, as well as for use in the education sector, for which a special version of Innovator is available to accommodate basic CNC machine training for students. Belying its smaller format, the Innovator will process virtually any material normally handled by much larger and more expensive machines. Typically, these include all kinds of solid and particle woods, aluminium and similar alloys, foamed board, plastics and laminates. 01952 291600 www.axyz.co.uk

Majority of tradespeople not sure how to use social media, says IronmongeryDirect A new study from IronmongeryDirect has revealed that 85% of tradespeople do not know how to effectively use social media to attract new business. Carpenters and joiners are among the least likely to get new business from social media, with only one in three saying it helps them attract work.
New research conducted by The Leadership Factor on behalf of Ironmongery Direct, the UK’s largest supplier of specialist ironmongery, has explored how trade businesses currently use social media, and how many are currently missing out on its benefits. To help joiners make the most of this vital resource, IronmongeryDirect has worked with experts to outline some key tips for using social media effectively. Almost half (47%) of tradespeople say that having a social media presence helps them get more work, with Facebook being the main platform (22%). This is for several reasons, including the ability to build stronger client relationships (15%), get ahead of competitors (15%), and interact with community groups (22%). Such is the power of social media, one in six (16%) tradespeople believe it is now just as important – if not moreso – than traditional word of mouth. Because of this, 45% now actively advertise on at least one social platform, and more than one in 10 (12%) use social media as their only form of marketing. However, despite recognising its importance, the vast majority of tradespeople say they are not using social media effectively. Nearly nine in ten (85%) do not know how to get the most out of it, with plumbers the least likely to maximise its potential (90%). Joiners are the most socialsavvy of all the trades, yet 79% still do not know how best to use their channels to help their business. While social media helps all trades bring in more work, builders are the most likely to attract new customers with it. Two thirds (66%) of builders say their social channels help bring in business, followed by bricklayers (53%) and
FP323_pages.1 (1).indd 72
landscapers (51%). Plasterers are the least likely to see an increase in work (25%). The trades most likely to get more work by using social media are: 1. Builders – 66% 2. Bricklayers – 53% 3. Landscapers – 51% 4. Painter/decorators – 46% 5. Electricians – 45% 6. Plumbers – 45% 7. Building surveyors – 37% 8. Carpenters – 33% 9. Joiners – 33% 10. Plasterers – 25% One business that has directly seen the benefits of social media is The Brighton Loft Co, a loft conversion company in East Sussex. Gilles Buxton, director, says: “When the pandemic hit this year, we started sharing our projects on social media, and since we’ve started doing that, we’ve seen an increase in business and enquiries. “In 2019, we had 40 enquiries, but we’ve already had 72 this year – so we are already up
• Half of tradespeople say social media gets them more work, but most do not know how to maximise its potential • A quarter say that Facebook and Google reviews help get them more customers • Builders get the most work from social media, plasterers the least • Experts reveal how to get the most out of social media trade platforms
+80% YoY, which is fantastic news.” On average, female tradespeople dedicate the most time to social media promotion, with over half (51%) pursuing leads online, compared to just 41% of men. They are also more likely to ask customers to leave reviews online (28% as opposed to 23%), and such digital feedback is growing in significance. Over 20 million business reviews are posted on Google every day, and they can have a huge impact on a company’s performance. A recent study found that businesses with positive scores on review sites can earn up to +58% more revenue. Overall, a quarter (25%) of trade businesses ask for reviews, and a similar amount (26%) believe that positive comments can directly lead to more custom. However, more than a fifth (21%) of tradespeople worry about receiving negative reviews and the impact that might have. Charlie Carlton, head of digital at Ironmongery Direct, says: “Whether you’re a start-up looking to increase brand awareness, or a larger firm trying to expand, most trade businesses can benefit from being on social media, so it’s definitely worth creating accounts if you don’t already have some. “For those who already have social channels, our research has shown that the majority aren’t currently getting the most out of them. However, it doesn’t take that much time or effort to create a basic profile that can start to pick up work.” For expert advice on how to get the most out of social media for a trade business, visit https://www.IronmongeryDirect.co.uk/blog/ six-tips-for-boosting-your-trade-businessusing-social

Wood Waste Technology helps timber business save money by investing in woodwaste heater
An Essex-based veneer merchant has reduced its heating and waste disposal costs by installing a woodwaste heater from Wood Waste Technology. DF Richards has been supplying natural, modified and reconstituted wood veneers to door, panel and furnituremakers since 1972, and employs around 20 staff. When the company calculated the cost of disposing of its woodwaste via skips, the directors decided to investigate alternatives. Ryan Everitt, marketing manager at DF Richards, explains: “As our business grew, the costs of waste disposal kept increasing. Unfortunately, when working with veneer, there is a substantial amount of woodwaste, as we can only work with the best bits of the wood. Even putting some waste through a briquetter, we realised we were still spending over £2000 a month on waste disposal, and realised there had to be a better way.” DF Richards had already invested in a briquetting machine from Wood Waste Technology, so contacted the company to find out more about woodwaste heaters. After learning about the benefits for the business, the team at DF Richards purchased a WT15, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Ryan continues: “We’re really happy with the heater, as it’s

decreased our waste disposal bills whilst also providing free heating to the factory. It was bitter cold in there during the winter months, and the team working in there ended up wearing multiple layers. A & G Toseland distributing for POR Micucci
Italian recycling technology company POR Micucci System recently announced the appointment of A & G Toseland as its exclusive distributor and re-seller of its briquetting and shredding range of machinery for the UK and Irish markets. With more than 350 machines already operating in the UK and Ireland in a variety of industries, the Brescia-based company is prioritising the furniture and joinery sector for growth over the next 2-3 years. A & G Toseland MD, George Toseland, explains:

As part of POR Micucci’s new strategy for the UK and Irish markets, it has installed a
