For many, the seasonal break and the start of a new year offers a welcome period of combined reflection, anticipation and introspection. Looking back over what feels like yet another challenging, emotion-filled year, planning and strategising for 2022 and beyond doesn’t come easy to everyone – but it is what we must all strive to execute. For some manufacturers this is the very lifeblood for maintaining the relevance of a business, keeping up to date with developments which in turn underpin their own R&D in terms of design and capability to produce better products more efficiently for their customers. As it stands, and as we are becoming accustomed to, trade shows have in the main been forcibly absent from the calendar – and very sadly we have been unable to participate in our own trade event, the W Exhibition, until 2023. At the time of going to press, those who are confident have the option to attend KBB Birmingham (further restrictions notwithstanding). In the face of this lack of access to suppliers, 2021 saw the renaissance of in-house events, to a varying degree of success. Many businesses have seen tremendous validity in opening their facilities to, and engaging with, prospective and existing customers, letting them get hands-on with the latest machinery and technology in a personal and highly targeted fashion – and in many instances, this appears to have paid dividends for all parties. Perhaps in 2022 we’ll see one or more of the major materials, fittings and components suppliers stand up and join in with the company-centric experiences, and provide similar opportunities to furniture and joinery manufacturers to those provided by the machinery suppliers. I feel that this year will continue to see further investment in showrooms and inhouse activities as – hopefully in the short term – we seek safer, less crowd-based activities as we endeavour to keep ourselves informed and up to date with suppliers’ developments. In this issue, we start 2022 with features on Panel Processing, CNC Machinery & Equipment, Edgebanding Materials & Technology, Adhesives and Sanding. Another sincere update for 2022 is that there are now fewer printed magazine titles for the furniture and joinery production sector in circulation – we believe our readers deserve the best, and we trust you value our offerings, both printed and online, as we are looking to further develop our options moving forward. Here’s to a positive and successful 2022! I hope you enjoy the issue. John Legg, editor john@media66.net

Former MD of the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM), Nick Garratt, has taken the role of chairman at the trade body
Outgoing MD of the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM), Nick Garratt, is gearing up to take the role of chairman at the trade body, as he welcomes his successor Sean Holt to the leadership role. During his three years at the helm of the BFM, Nick has overseen a number of changes, with a view to moving the association forward. This has included the introduction of new services for members, as well as activities to help increase the profile of BFM within the wider industry. Key initiatives include the Markel Law online hub, a significant new benefit for BFM members which offers legal and business advice on key subjects such as health and safety, employment, tax, contracts and data protection. New branding has also been introduced, putting a clear identity forward for the association. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, the BFM was quick to provide up-todate guidance and information for members. More recently, the BFM’s new website launched last year, while a series of BFM webinars is providing members with top-flight expertise from
a variety of experts. “My time as MD at the BFM has been exciting, challenging and thoroughly enjoyable,” says Nick. “I’m delighted the association is in a strong position as I hand over to Sean Holt. BFM aims to grow, to expand membership and increase its value and relevance to industry – and Sean is the ideal person to steer the organisation through the next stage of development.” As Sean takes the reins, Nick’s wealth of industry expertise will remain with BFM as he moves to a part-time role as chairman of the board. Current chair, Brian Ahern, will become vice-chairman, and John Woolley will stand
down from this position, but continue to serve as a member of the board. Nick adds: “While it is time for a new direction, I’m delighted to remain involved at BFM in the role of chairman and look forward to working with the board and Sean as he brings new ideas to drive the association forward. “Sean’s leadership and experience at the head of a number of membership organisations is a great asset and, combined with the industryspecific expertise of the board, we have created a fantastic team to ensure we can fulfil BFM’s ambitious agenda.” www.bfm.org.uk
Kommerzialrat Johann Felder (19302021), founder and long-time MD of the Felder Group, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on 7th December after a brief but severe illness. With his passing, his family, as well as the company’s employees, are losing an inspiring and striking personality, who turned the Felder Group into the successful family business it is today. In 1956, in his hometown of Absam (Tyrol), Johann Felder and his wife Gertraud founded the company, Johann Felder jun. in the workshop at his parents’ house. That same year, they presented the first Felder woodworking machines at trade fairs in Vienna and Innsbruck. Over the following decades, the company kept growing, moved from Absam to Hall in Tirol and finally made a name for itself far beyond the borders of Tyrol as a trailblazing mechanical engineering company of global importance.
FP335_Pages PF.indd 8
Today, the Felder Group is among the leading mechanical engineering and technology companies in the field of wood and composite processing worldwide, and continues to surprise with technical innovations. Johann Felder was known for his positive outlook on life and his progressive worldview. He was greatly respected in Austria and abroad. His wife Gertraud, his sons Hansjörg and Martin Felder – the company’s current MDs – his daughter Elisabeth, his grandchildren Daniel, Patrick, Tamara, and Alexander Felder, the third generation working in the family business, as well as the entire Felder Group staff, are deeply saddened by Johann Felder’s passing. They are losing not just an altogether fascinating and strong personality, but also a mentor and a dear friend. www.felder-group.com

Robbie O’Neill is the new MD of Ferwood UK, taking over the role from John Wilson who has become the CEO of Ferwood UK and USA following the expansion of the Ferwood Group. Robbie brings with him over 30 years of experience in the furniture and woodworking industry, a wealth of product knowledge and vast industry contacts, making him the ideal candidate to maintain and strengthen the UK business. “Ferwood’s approach to business has always impressed me,” begins Robbie. “For Ferwood, it’s not just about buying and selling machinery. Ferwood’s business ethos centres around building relationships and finding solutions for its customers. The company’s attitude to help both its suppliers and customers resonated with me and made the business and role a good fit for me.” Going forward, Robbie is keen to underpin the work John and the team have done in the UK. “He’s built a successful business model and a winning formula,” says Robbie. “Because of this, I’m able to focus my immediate attention on supporting the team and our existing customers. Plans are already in place to accommodate the changing market and, following a record-
breaking 12 months of sales for Ferwood UK, we have a clear vision of what we want to achieve and how we intend to do it.” Robbie adds: “Today’s industry has a massive appetite for machinery and we have a business framework in place that allows us to satisfy this demand quickly, whilst maintaining a high level
of customer service. This is a huge selling point for us, and with my experience dealing with industrialised machinery and providing solutions to UK companies across the board, I’m excited to be working with an established, credible supplier of reconditioned machines in the UK and Ireland. I’m hungry for this new challenge and I’m excited to be steering a new ship.” Riccardo Rossi, CEO of Ferwood, concludes: “The UK is one of the biggest markets for us and, since the company was founded six years ago, Ferwood services and supplies reconditioned machinery to seven out of the 10 biggest panel manufacturers in the UK. John has done an exceptional job building the business to this level and to form a strong, knowledgeable team that reflects the company’s core business values and, whilst he will continue to be available to UK customers and remain on the board of directors, I know he will continue to do the same great work in America. Robbie has achieved a lot in his career – working closely with some of the biggest producers in the business – and I believe he possesses the attributes needed to grow the business and its presence in the UK market. I look forward to working with him.” www.ferwoodgroup.com
Giuseppe Giliberti is the newest addition to TM Machinery’s engineering team. An avid sportsman brimming with team spirit, Giuseppe’s drive and eagerness to learn, combined with his naturally competitive nature, has seen him complete a level three course in electrical and electronic engineering and win one of only 30 places on Toyota’s hugely popular four-year apprenticeship programme to become a fully-qualified, multi-skilled maintenance engineer. “It was the best thing I ever did, and to beat thousands of people to gain an apprenticeship that was in partnership with Toyota was an immensely proud moment for me,” says Giuseppe. “The first two years were spent at Toyota’s apprentice development centre – a school for engineering – where we learned everything from electrical hand skills, welding, hydraulics and pneumatics to practical machining on lathes and mills. It was an intense period of time but I learned so much and it really fuelled my interest in engineering.” It came as no surprise to Giuseppe’s family that, following the completion of his apprenticeship, he became a machinery maintenance engineer and spent two years expanding his machinery knowledge.
FP335_Pages PF.indd 10
“I spent my time learning as much as I could about woodworking machinery by stripping them down and rebuilding them,” he says. “It was a great way to build on my competencies and it gave me an opportunity to work on panel and solid wood machinery.”
But Giuseppe was keen to embark on a new challenge and gain more on-site experience. In June 2021, he became TM Machinery’s newest service engineer. “From the off, TM approached things differently,” admits Giuseppe. “They wanted to know what I’d learned since completing my apprenticeship programme, what I enjoyed, what I wanted out of my career and where I wanted to go. They wanted to make sure it was the right fit for both of us and, as a result, I’m in a job I really enjoy and that continues to challenge me every day. I now cover everything from machinery repairs and maintenance to machinery dismantling and installations.” It is the machinery installations that Giuseppe particularly enjoys. “Building something from nothing excites me,” he says. “I felt the same way at school, and always enjoyed finding out how things were made. Recently, I worked with another engineer to decommission a wall saw and move it to another unit, where we then had to reinstall and fully test the machine ready for use. This kind of job puts everything I’ve learned into practise and puts my skills to good use. There’s no better feeling for me and I’m excited to be part of the TM team.” www.tmmachinery.co.uk

By Gary Peters, director at The Metals Warehouse
“Over the last 12 months, it has become clear that we don’t need to grow the business in terms of turnover. If we can, brilliant, but we’re focusing more on the areas that make us money”
It goes without saying that the last 18 months have been one of, if not the most challenging periods for many businesses across the UK and the entire world – and for The Metals Warehouse it has been no different. When Covid-19 hit, we saw a lot of our customer base shutting their doors. That forced us to re-engineer our business. It forced us to actually look at what made us money. It forced us to look at areas of the business that needed change. So, we made changes accordingly. Covid, furlough and redundancy Firstly, like many businesses across the UK, we needed to utilise the furlough scheme, and what we were seeing was that areas of the business were still comfortable, despite having several members of our team on furlough for three months. That’s a horrible realisation, and one we had to look into. Ultimately, it became clear we had to look into redundancy, and it was one of the hardest business decisions we’ve ever had to make. As a group of owners, we’re driven by our staff. It’s those guys that motivate us. That, to me, is what made owning The Metals Warehouse so special. To make those people redundant, as we did that year, was awful. They were being let go through no fault of their own. We didn’t buy this business, we had grown up through it and grown with these people. That itself is, perhaps, one reason why we hadn’t previously put the business first. Covid-19 forced us, and the manufacturing industry as a whole, to have a rethink, and since then, everything that we have done has been good for the business. How that plays out longer term and what impact this pandemic has over a bigger scale of time, remains to be seen. We could be looking back at this in 10 years’ time and say it was an absolute disaster for us as a
FP335_Pages PF.indd 12
business, but right now that’s not the case, and the next thing for the industry is what impact this past year has had on businesses and whether Covid-19 and the furlough scheme has kicked the can down the road. We’re going to see a number of businesses – not just in the manufacturing sector – that are going to have some tough decisions to make over the next few months. Viable business decisions Over the last 12 months, it has become clear that we don’t need to grow the business in terms of turnover. If we can, brilliant, but we’re focusing more on the areas that make us money. For example, delivering a sheet of stainless steel to Derby costs far less than delivering that same product up to Manchester. Prior to Covid-19, that’s where we had been pushing the business over the last few years – it was all about breaking into new areas across the UK and growing our presence outside of the Midlands. Our decisions were always based on sales, rather than on whether it was a viable business decision. We put a lot of infrastructure in place in order to be able to do that. Because of Covid-19, though, we’ve seen
that, actually, we don’t need to do that. We don’t need to be putting tonnes of metals onto lorries every single day. We’ve got a viable business that is turning over far less, but one that is more local-focused. In other words, prior to the pandemic, we were scared to say ‘no’ to customers. Turnover was the priority over profit, and we thought if we didn’t take on a job, that customer wouldn’t ever come back to us. It’s a ridiculous way to think, but it’s how we have been for so long. Over the last 12 months, though, we have said ‘no’, and there are a few reasons for that. Prices have now more than doubled since January 2020, and we’re not in a position to be able to sell it as cheaply as we had previously. Due to the issues at the ports, we haven’t had the depth of stock that we used to have in place, and therefore we have had to be selective in who we sell to. The last 12 months have shown us that we don’t have to undercut the market for our existence. A finished product Consumers are happy to pay far more than the margins we make selling to big engineering and fabrication companies, but they
want a solution to a problem. At the moment, we only offer a part of that solution. If customers want a piece of stainless steel to act as a splashback behind a cooker, that’s something we can fulfil. What we don’t offer is the drill holes that will enable the customer to attach it to the wall or the glue or the cleaning agent to keep it looking in pristine condition. For the customer that only knows that they’re looking for a splashback, that’s exactly what they’re going to search for online. At that point, no-one is going to be seeing our very specific stainless steel sheets that do the job equally as well as anything on the market. So, we’re looking at the products we are selling and we’re identifying what they’re being used for. From there, we’re tailoring them to ensure that customers are finding the specific products they need. This is where the end product comes into it. We’re looking at the packaging, developing how-to instructions, and making something that fulfils exactly what the customer wants. Improving online The next generation, Gen-Z if you will, are heading to the internet

first to make their purchases, and that’s >> something we have to meet. We still have a fax machine and we still have customers that are sending their enquiries through to us via fax. I suspect that we will see that machine on the Antiques Roadshow at some point. Like many manufacturing businesses, though, that, of course, is starting to change. We are shifting our focus to make sure that when potential customers are searching for a product, we are top of the search engines and they can then make a swift, informed decision to purchase. Our website is now a priority. It’s user friendly, but only to a point. Right now, we have got a couple of different paths to the same product. A customer might want to purchase a full sheet for something, or they might want a cut sheet. They’re the same product, though, and that can cause frustration. Our online journey is over-complicated, and fixing that is a priority. The benchmark for online service is Amazon. When customers shop on Amazon, they don’t compare prices anywhere else because of how easy it is. You click on the
product, swipe your finger across the screen, you’ve completed the purchase and it’ll be here the next day. That’s the measure of ecommerce. We’re not naive to think we’ll get up to that standard, but it won’t stop us from striving towards implementing some of those changes. Looking forward In summary, once we have implemented these changes, I think as a business we’ll be in a really good position. The UK market is in a really good position at this point in time, too. For manufacturing, in particular, this is a great moment. Previously, there were a lot of tariffs that the sector had to pay when the UK was part of the EU, but since Brexit, that’s not the case any more, and that has given us a competitive advantage. You can find out more about this and the overall impact of Brexit within the manufacturing industry in the report – Manufacturing & Brexit: The UK in a Changing Europe. It presents an opportunity, and it has the potential to be a very exciting couple of years for the manufacturing industry. www.metalswarehouse.co.uk
Due to the current coronavirus situation and the resulting concern in the sector, February’s dateline for ZOW – a key supplier fair for the furniture and interior design industry – has been postponed until 3rd-5th May 2022. Rising coronavirus numbers in Germany and across Europe are presenting new challenges for the industry. According to Matthias Pollmann, vice president of trade fair management at Koelnmesse: “There is increasing uncertainty among companies about whether taking part in a trade fair would currently be the right and responsible thing to do. “We are communicating closely and in a spirit of trust with our exhibitors, industry representatives and visitors. What has become clear from our many conversations is that most are not prepared to attend ZOW in February 2022 as visitors or exhibitors, and that they have serious doubts over whether ZOW can successfully go ahead in a few weeks with the situation as it is.” www.zow.de
Back in March 2021, Furnica announced the launch of a new sliding door system made from aluminium for the UK market. In November, the first deliveries were made to new dealers in Northern Ireland and central England. Furnica is now seeking dealers throughout England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland to distribute and manufacture the finished doors ordered by customers on the furnica.co.uk platform.
A special application for designing sliding doors by customers will be launched at the beginning of this year. Dealers will carry out these orders using the Furnica systems. Furnica will provide a full technical support package, the necessary tools to manufacture finished doors and training in production. A permanent stock will be maintained at the company’s warehouse in Rugby, allowing fast delivery of profiles and accessories to any location in the UK. “Our focus is to introduce the new aluminium sliding door system to the UK market in a complete way,” explains Jacek Siewiaryn, who is responsible for product launch in the UK, “which will ensure product availability, fast delivery, and full technical support for each dealer that joins our network. “We are looking for companies who already make made-to-measure furniture and kitchens for their customers. We are sure that our sliding door system will perfectly complement the offer of our partners.” 07441 909300 www.furnica.co.uk

Installations All-round furniture and joinery producer, Christopher Bell, recently selected Homag as its preferred supplier to upgrade its wood processing equipment. Christopher Bell is a well-established company that has traded for over 25 years. It has 30 employees working at its 95,000ft2 manufacturing facility in Banbury. Not long ago, the company’s owner and managing director decided to purchase a state-of-theart Homag Centateq P-210 CNC processing centre to improve the company’s production efficiencies. Homag Centateq P-210 CNC facilitates more economical production All of Christopher Bell’s furniture and joinery components were made by hand before the arrival of the new Homag machine. With the automation of much of its wood processing, the Homag Centateq P-210 CNC processing centre has significantly improved the company’s manufacturing efficiencies and reduced its labour costs. To create automated processing programs, Christopher Bell employs Homag’s woodWOP workshop-based program system and CAM Plugin for its new CNC machine. This advanced 3D programming software enables the easy programming of routing, drilling or sawing. A large graphics area with a three-dimensional view of the workpiece is the cornerstone of this innovative programming software. It guarantees the highest programming safety and permanent control during program generation.
Homag Centateq P-210 CNC processing centre
Increased machining capabilities According to the eponymous company’s owner and MD, Christopher Bell, the machining flexibility of the Homag CNC processing centre was one of the most important reasons for the investment. The machine’s latest generation control technology, drives and software ensure virtually unlimited machining possibilities. The increased throughput, production efficiencies and reliability of Homag machinery, backed up by the availability of spare parts, were also crucial factors in the evaluation and selection process for the CNC processing centre purchase. Due diligence built trust in Homag technology Christopher Bell and his colleagues saw the Homag machinery at an exhibition before investing in the new equipment. In addition, Homag’s sales representative, Phil Pitchford, took Christopher and his colleagues to view a Centateq P-210 CNC processing centre in operation at a local factory.
Christopher and his team found this really useful, and the feedback they gained from the visit helped to cement their confidence in the long term reliability of the German-engineered, state-of-theart equipment. Exceptional aftersales service Commenting on the service Homag has delivered, Christopher says: ”Phil Pitchford, the Homag sales representative, helped us get the right solution and all within our budget. “The aftersales service we have received from Homag has been exceptional – they have promptly addressed the occasional issues we have had, limiting downtime to a minimum. Homag’s helpline and online forum have been really useful for the machine operators, too – these resources have backed up the comprehensive operator training they received from Homag.” For a demonstration or more information on Homag’s machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at Homag UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

It has been over five years since JJ Smith installed the first MZ Pluris CNC working centre in the UK and, since that time, it has become the machine of choice for many of the leading sofa and chair frame manufacturers. 15 machines have been installed to date, the latest being at Blackburn-based ASF Sofa Frames. The reason for the Pluris’ popularity in this manufacturing sector is its production capabilities and increased board yield compared to standard CNC nesting routers. On the Pluris, it is possible to machine a stack of panels up to approximately 60mm in thickness. For example, this would be four 15mm plywood panels instead of only one or two on a standard CNC, meaning over double the production output. The other unique feature on the Pluris is the fact it uses a bandsaw (which automatically angles) in conjunction with the router head
“Already we are seeing a two-fold increase in production output, and a big improvement in sheet material yield”

to cut out the nested parts. As the bandsaw thickness is only 0.8mm compared to a router cutter that is, say, 14mm in diameter, it is possible to create much tighter nests, meaning more parts with less material wastage. The machines are normally supplied with an automatic lift table for loading the stack of panels onto the machine carriage, the standard size being 2550 x 1250mm. On request, this can be increased in width to 1550mm or, for jumbo-size sheets, the machine’s maximum capacity is 3100 x 2100mm.
In addition to the CNC-controlled router head and bandsaw, the Pluris is also equipped with a multispindle, point-to-point drilling head and automatic quick setting of the table support arms and panel grippers through the program. Optionally, a circular saw working in the Y axis can also be specified. Whilst the Pluris is mainly used for cutting parts from sheet material, it can also be used for cutting, drilling, and shaping solid wood parts for items such as rails. The Pluris at ASF Sofa Frames has now been installed for several
months. “For our company it was a big decision to make such a significant investment, but one we knew we had to do to keep pace with an ever-growing order book,” comments co-owner, Mr Ashraf. “Already we are seeing a twofold increase in production output, and a big improvement in sheet material yield.” Contact JJ Smith to find out more about how this machine can increase productivity. 0151 548 900 sales@jjsmith.co.uk www.jjsmith.co.uk

Loading boards onto machinery can be an arduous task for operators within a woodworking production facility. Often this can be a two-person task and comes with the risk of injury. It can also slow down the speed of production. A solution to this is vacuum tube lifting technology, which offers a safe, simple and effective solution to product lifting and positioning in the workplace. Palamatic has worked with customers within the woodworking industry for 35 years to understand the most effective methods that work best for the operator. A vacuum tube lifter offers a very safe and easy solution for moving product within a manufacturing process. It consists of an electric vacuum pump, a lift tube assembly and an end effector. The system lifts via suction created by the vacuum in a similar way a vacuum cleaner sucks up dust, and makes the product weightless to the operator. The jib or suspension crane that the lifting systems are hung from is critical to offering an ergonomic solution that works for the operator. Palamatic can provide H-style gantry systems to cover large areas, but its popular smaller swing jibs and low-headroom centre posts can fit into areas where space is an issue. Whether the application is to lift boards, doors or furniture,
it is crucial to understand the sequence of operation in full and the characteristics of the product being handled when choosing a lifting solution. The most common wood materials handled by Palamatic’s lifting systems include Trespa jumbo boards, spandrel panels, MDF, MFC, chipboard, wood, plywood, Sterling board, plaster board and polycarbonate. Products handled include boards, doors, furniture, staircases, planks, timber sections, laminate surfaces and cabinets. Applications Palamatic regularly provides equipment for include
loading and unloading vertical panel saws, beam saws, dimension saws, flatbed CNC stations, edgebanders, laminators, paint lines and tilt tables. Palamatic is also often asked to rotate boards through 90° or 180° for loading and unloading purposes. Another common request is to grip doors by their edges, instead of using suction on the flat face, for example to avoid wet paint/glue, which its systems can do with ease. With Palamatic’s 22,000ft2 factory based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, the company is well placed to visit customer sites, and for customers
to send it samples to test prior to manufacturing their vacuum tube lifter. Palamatic uses its onsite fabrication centre to design solutions where an element of the application is unique to the customer. To meet health and safety regulations, it is crucial that equipment is serviced regularly. Palamatic offers service contracts that include a thorough examination of customer equipment, and replacement of parts to keep equipment and production running. sales@palamatic.com www.palamatic.com

TAWI is a market leader in manual handling solutions. The company is proud to claim that it designed the first-ever vacuum lifting aid in 1989, and has been constantly innovating new solutions ever since to provide customers with the newest and most reliable technology. The equipment is highly versatile, with different mounting options and interchangeable feet to allow easy lifting and turning of panels of all shapes and sizes. Designed with ergonomics and comfort in mind, TAWI’s manual handling aids remove 100% of the weight of goods from the operator. This allows them to achieve optimum levels of productivity and precision, in turn reducing production errors and workplace injury. TAWI’s vacuum lifters easily lift sheets of wood weighing up to 500kg. A comfortable and userfriendly control panel makes it easy to keep full control of the load and ensures an ergonomic working position. Sheets can be rotated and tilted up to 180°, making it easy to move doors, panels and other sheet materials.

LG Collection has 40 years’ experience in manufacturing panels in various materials, including wood and laminated panels. After complaints from employees experiencing shoulder and back pain due to repetitive lifting, the decision was made to invest in a TAWI system. Bjorn Skoglund, production leader at LG Collection, describes how the business went from one unit to 20, after realising the benefits it was experiencing through its new investment. “Employees can keep an even pace throughout the whole day without straining their bodies,” says Bjorn. “The amount of sick leave has reduced significantly and employee satisfaction has been noticeably better, as employees can now avoid pain and physical tiredness.” Andy Longrigg, area sales manager at TAWI UK, states: “We are seeing more enquiries nowadays after a bad accident has happened, or because health and safety requirements are becoming stricter. These accidents are avoidable, and by proactively
introducing aids such as these, staff injury and stress can be massively reduced. “We will always ensure that you have the best possible solution for you and your staff, and we offer a free visit to site to discuss your requirements and view the space you and your team are working in. “Once installed, we have a dedicated after-sales team who will keep the equipment safe and up to date for its lifetime. “We value the relationships we build with our customers, and we will make sure you have
the full support of the entire team throughout your working relationship with TAWI UK.” Vacuum lift systems come with many benefits for both businesses and people. A vacuum lifter will almost fully eliminate the weight of any load, making lifting effortless. This improves employee satisfaction and will also save companies from injuryrelated costs. When lifting is effortless, anyone can lift, resulting in improved workforce flexibility, diversity, and retention. www.tawi.com

TF600S In addition to the original Project TF100/Speedy, Masterwood now offers a wider range of drilling machines for the panel market. The Master Drill series, which is available in three versions, has the advantage of working above and below simultaneously, thanks to the Smart table, for continuous workpiece support and patented airbed tables. The machines can have vertical and horizontal drilling heads above and below the bed, plus the option for vertical routers. These combinations and the twin gripper feed system ensure fast and accurate machining. Programs are easy to generate in the Masterwood CAD/CAM software, and can be used with barcodes and scanners for fast, automated production. Options of infeed and outfeed tables, to help speed up production time, are available amongst the three models.

Paoloni 450 AX panel saw
Established for over 35 years, Coventry-based Ney is an impressive source of supply for everything from simple hand tools through to complete lines of sophisticated machinery, as well as component, fittings and material requirements. Here, Ney presents two of its panel saws …
manual adjustment. The anodised aluminium sliding table has a stroke of 3200mm and the rip fence capacity is 1300mm. The machine will accept a 400mmdiameter saw blade without the need to remove the scriber, giving a max cutting height of 155mm at 90° and 110mm at 45°.
Ney N-45 panel saw The Ney N-45 panel saw has been built specifically for Ney and is engineered to a very high standard, incorporating design details which make the machine a pleasure to use. It has a high specification and offers outstanding value for money, says Ney. The saw is part of a series of hi-tech, low-cost machines which Ney has put its name to, meaning that users can rest assured of its quality and functionality. The Ney range will offer value for money, combined with engineering standards that are a prerequisite of modern machinery today. The motor group inclines to 45° electrically via a button at the front of the machine, with a gravitational display. Rise and fall of the blade is also motorised for ease and speed of setting, and a central lubrication system ensures prolonged troublefree operation of this group. The vertical and lateral adjustment of the scriber is by

in progress. The downside is that some operations, such as cutting sheets and sizing components, take longer than they should. Most sawyers will say they spend more time walking around the machine to set the rip fence than they do actually cutting. The old adage of ‘measure twice and cut once’ only compounds the problem. The Paoloni 450 AX panel saw
“The Ney range will offer value for money, combined with engineering standards that are a prerequisite of modern machinery today”
goes a long way to resolving this problem. Additionally, the ability to raise, lower and tilt the main blade as well as adjust the scriber from the front of the machine at the touch of a button, is attractive. When one adds on the motorised rip fence with the ability to create a simple cut list, the advantages of the machine become apparent. At a price which is attractive to even the smaller manufacturer, the time savings alone, coupled with the potential increased capacity, make a visit to Ney’s Coventry showroom an attractive proposition. 0247 630 8100 www.store.ney.co.uk

For the past 12 years, it has also been designing and selling a range of new and reengineered CNC routers and machining centres, branded CNC Dynamics.
Richard Banks, MD, and Mason Banks, sales manager
Boasting a comprehensive range of welldesigned CNC machinery, CNC Support has also earned itself a positive reputation with its proven range of routers and machine centres. MD Richard Banks explains that as many of the CNC Support team are engineers by trade, it will come as no surprise to learn that the new products have been guided by the experienced Colne business regarding the appropriate specifications and requirements of the UK market. “It’s fairly easy for a company to pick up a machine agency and push products into the market, but how we operate is another thing entirely,” says Richard. “Our belief is that we, along with our customers, know exactly what’s needed regarding the detailed specification and performance characteristics of machinery
FP335_Pages PF.indd 34
and equipment to ensure it is appropriate for how our customers are set up, and how they manufacture. It’s also fundamental to us that the products we supply will survive the rigours of the UK market and provide reliable performance for our customers over the longer term. Ultimately, it’s got our name on it, and we have to have confidence that what we deliver will stand the test of time. All of the machines that we supply are fully supported by comprehensive spare parts in our UK stock.” Although the CNC Dynamics range includes standard machines for different functions, the majority of the company’s output is bespoke to some degree in order to provide the optimum solution for the customers’ specific needs. “If a customer wants an 8- or 24-station toolchanger, linear or carousel, multi-spindle or multi-axis, liquid- or fan-cooled spindles, HSK or ISO toolholding options, there are so many readily achievable individual options for our customers,” explains sales manager, Mason Banks. CNC Support is well known for its extensive UK support network, something the company maintains sets it apart. “We all know that a successful relationship in machine sales is not just about the machine, it’s about the level of support before, during, and after installation into its full working life,” explains Mason. “For 25 years we have been providing important service support to our longstanding customer base, and we are the only UK router company with this level of in-house skill – not only for design and
build, but also software, safety and control. No other UK machine manufacturer offers this level of build involvement – for instance, our software engineers create the machine operating system (the Dynamics Plus CNC system), and we have one of the country’s largest team of service technicians.” The popular CNC Dynamics Start range of 3-axis CNC routers begins with the 1325 and its 2500 x 1300 table, and retains the features of its larger counterparts. This machine is built for 8 x 4 applications aiming to harness the performance of nested work. The Start range also features the 3015 and 3020, which come with 3050 x 1560mm or 3 x 2m tables, and are deemed ideal for nesting. All machines in the Start range come CAD-CAM ready and all four machines boast programmable spindle speeds to 24,000rpm. These solid workhorses are reliable and user friendly, and are popular among the woodworking and plastics industries. Moving through the options, the CNC Dynamics Plus range comprises nine higherperformance routers designed for a range of specific, general and advanced applications. The 1325 Plus is described as “an ideal small footprint CNC router” and comes with the 8 x 4ft sheet capacity, the Dynamics Plus CNC system, intelligent vacuum system, high-speed digital contouring, Remote log-in support, optional onboard AlphaCam system and on-screen component real-time graphics. All of the CNC Dynamics Plus range can be offered with HSD

ISO30 or HSK63 tooling options. The 3015 Plus is set up for 10 x 5ft sheet capacity, with a substantial part program memory and high-speed processing for more complex geometry, the 3015 has HSD spindle options up to 24,000 rpm with programmable contouring to 40m/min and rapid feeds of 60m/min. Featuring HSD 9 or 12kW automatic toolchange spindle, the 10-station tool magazine has automatic tool length setting. The 3015 Plus also features an optional multi-spindle borer unit with horizontal drilling in the X and V planes and sawing in X and Y planes. As standard, the 3015 has a 250m3/hr vacuum pump along with 500 and 600m3 options, plus full safety enclosures with light beam system or safety mats. If the tasking requires nesting as a priority, then CNC Dynamics’ Autoload Plus CNC machines will be ideal. Fitted with the Dynamics Plus CNC system, it boasts ultra-high speed contouring and is of course CAD/CAM ready. The 3020’s high-speed machining functions sets users up for faster nesting operations, which delivers high-speed processing for complex geometry and massive part program memory. 3020’s options include a ‘quickset’ component probing system for fully automated set-up, handy stop/start tool cleaning features and easy-to-modify operating features to increase ease of use. Sheets are automatically loaded into the machine, processed and pushed to the off-feed conveyor. This condenses a task which would require three people down to a one-man job. The company can supply machines up to 6m in length, complete with automated handling systems. Moving up to the CNC Dynamics Vertex, which offers 3, 4 and 5-axis functionality, the machine’s specification provides its customers with the highest level of performance from each of the main machine engineering components. The Vertex4 features a Z-axis pivot and the recently introduced Vertex5 is the company’s new 5-axis CNC router. Bed sizes go up to 6m long, and the Z axis ranges from 300-600mm. Important

to the overall quality of this package is the increased mechanical rigidity and enhanced gear ratios for high-accuracy positioning, making for a robust machining platform. As standard of course is the company’s trademark Dynamics Plus CNC system, delivering a high-performance digital CNC system with advanced algorithms for high-speed interpolation. Featuring HSK63 toolholding and liquid-cooled HSD spindle with 32,000rpm variable speed, all of the Plus range of routers is, naturally, CAD/CAM ready. CNC Dynamics also recently unveiled a solution specifically tailored for efficient door and panel production. The Door, and Panel Plus CNC machining centres feature vertical and horizontal multi-face routing, and a flexible vacuum pod system with conveyor swarf disposal. Its bespoke customised door design software gives fast, easy program creativity and productivity. The CNC Dynamics Door Plus features include a 24,000-rpm automatic toolchange spindle, powerful onboard graphical programming system, and a multi-spindle vertical and horizontal boring unit with clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation. Its 3 x 1.3m bed

has a 400mm travel in its Z axis with a feed rate of 30m/min on its X and Y axes and 60m/min rapid rate. Importantly, it has horizontal routing for locks and hinges and is fed by a 16-station auto toolchanger and aggregate facility. The Dynamics Door Plus machine can be custom built to individual specification. The beauty of the Plus range is the availability of any table size and any spindle configuration. Multi-spindle machines are primarily designed for the machining of multiple components in parallel while retaining the ability to cut nested sheets. With its Dynamics Plus digital CNC and servo system and CAD/CAM-ready status, the multiple stop location and pod location system ensure this machine has optimal performance and flexibility. Many machines within the CNC Dynamics Plus range have been tailored for individual customers, ensuring freedom of specification and a willingness to work with the end-user. CNC Dynamics’ CNC routers have evolved from a long history of machine service and customer support and are fully supported by the team at CNC Support. Its products have grown from the company’s strong engineering background. This, coupled with its tireless service and support ethos, delivers the “ideal machine package”. All-new CNC Dynamics router centre packages include installation, commissioning, and operator training along with an option for CAD/ CAM assistance prior to delivery. The machine
will be delivered, installed and commissioned by CNC Dynamics’ own engineers and, during the commissioning phase, the engineers will assist in production set-up. Following that, technical support comes in the form of dedicated technicians via phone and email, and if required, CNC Support can remotely log in to a customer’s machine to assist with any issues they may have. The company’s machines can be covered by 1-, 2- and 3-year warranties – Plus machines can be supplied with servicing by the company’s own dedicated site service engineers via its Preventative Maintenance Agreements. In addition, the company’s site engineers are supported by a team of factory-based engineers. All its technicians are UK time-served with relevant qualifications, and the company does not use agents or sub-contracted staff. In closing, Richard is full of confidence for the years ahead. “Investment in the company and product development have paid dividends – in 2020 we installed over 40 CNC router centres, each one tailored to each end user’s needs and requirements, and 2021 stands as our most productive year to date,” he concludes. “We firmly believe we are the backbone of the UK woodworking industry and, throughout the pandemic, our customers have been able to rely on us.” 01282 859122 www.cncdynamics.co.uk

Edgebanding materials & technology
Woods in lighter nuances, such as larch, ash, maple, or birch, can be seen in increasing frequency lately, according to Ostermann. Meeting this trend, which looks set to continue, Ostermann offers an array of different ABS furniture edgings with light wood decors ...
FP335_Pages PF.indd 38
19/12/2021 16:21
Ostermann’s ABS edging Mountain Larch brown wooden structured was applied here. The realistic interplay of lighter and darker parts gives the surfaces of the furniture a compelling look, without dominating larger areas too much
Light woods allow for versatile combinations, offering a great match to the lately popular supermatt plain colours in subtle blue or green shades, and complementing the trend colour, black. When combined, these colours evoke the Scandinavian style – furniture made of light woods, restrained colours for walls and fabrics, and accentuation through black metal elements. In order to implement the style on furniture, Ostermann recommends the ABS edgings Frêne Scandinave wooden structured, Mainau Birch minipearl, Royal Maple minipearl, or the Sand Lyon Ash wooden structured edging. Customers that prefer a little more grain in the decor should use the ABS edging, Mountain Larch brown wooden structured. The realistic interplay of lighter and darker parts gives the surfaces of furniture a compelling look, without dominating larger areas too much. Ostermann supplies all mentioned edgings in standard dimensions of 23, 33, 43 and 100mm and in thicknesses of 1 or 2mm. Find an overview of the mentioned edgings on the Ostermann website, www.ostermann.eu – enter the search term “#lightwoods”. Highlight – ABS edging Mountain Larch brown wooden structured Larch is quite a special wood type. Botanically, it belongs to the Pinaceae or pine family. Being one of the hardest coniferous woods, it can be used for a variety of purposes, such as structural or furniture timber. In this image can be seen the Ostermann ABS edging Frêne Scandinave wooden structured (top left), Mainau Birch minipearl (bottom left), Royal Maple minipearl (top right) and the Sand Lyon Ash wooden structured edging (bottom right)
FP335_Pages PF.indd 39
Wood colour and structure are characterised by a regular change between light spring wood and darker, sharply delineated summerwood. Since real larch wood darkens quite a bit under the influence of light, the ABS edging Brown Mountain Larch wooden structured has proven a good fit for furnituremaking. The deeply brushed decor finish additionally allows one to feel the furniture’s texture, thereby adding character and authenticity to a room. Ash – ABS edging Frêne Scandinave All those that wish to endow light furniture with an explicitly Scandinavian look are advised by the Ostermann experts to try the soft-pale edging, Frêne Scandinave. The edging’s restrained decor combines the characteristics of classic ash wood with a typically Scandinavian pallor. Birch – ABS edging Mainau Birch minipearl Birch wood seems to be made for the light and friendly home style. After all, birch plays an
important role in Scandinavian furnituremaking. With its hardly visible grain and yellowish-white colour, the ABS edging, Mainau Birch minipearl presents a very light and elegant solution for Scandinavian furnishings. Maple – ABS edging Royal Maple minipearl Those seeking an edging with a delicate grain can use the Royal Maple minipearl variant. The soft transitions between the fine, light-brown lines, slightly tending towards reddish tones, give the light basic colour of the edging vigour without dominating it too much. The result is a classic maple decor which seems very natural. Ash – Sand Lyon Ash wooden structured The soft wood grain of the ash gives the sand-coloured edging a restrained but nevertheless warm colour. Due to a slight tinge of grey on the edging, it can be combined very well with unobtrusive grey colours, but equally with stronger greenish or bluish plain colours. www.ostermann.eu

Adhesives Edging specialist, Ostermann, supplies a high-quality selection of hotmelt adhesives for mechanical edging processing. But how do customers go about finding the right product? Here, the Ostermann experts inform on important basics and provide useful tips ... Filled EVA adhesive is a ‘classic’ in furnituremaking and interior design. It is distinguished by its easy handling, a fine bondline and a lower tendency for stringing. With unfilled EVA hotmelt adhesive, joints become thinner –
you need less glue but higher feed speeds. To find the right hotmelt adhesive, use the filter function in the Ostermann online shop. This way, you can quickly narrow down the type of adhesive, colour, filler, manufacturer, feed speed of your machine or the type of container, and reach the best product for your individual requirements. Waterproof? Choose PUR! PUR adhesives are suited for rather difficult bonding tasks, for example in kitchen and bathroom furniture. The chemical cross-linking
induces particularly high heat and water resistance. Moreover, the adhesive’s bonding strength and the chemical resistance of the joint are higher than with EVA adhesives. Glue consumption is lower and you can achieve a very thin joint, equalling a visually flawless bondline. If the machine is perfectly adjusted, you can even achieve the often sought ‘invisible bondline’ with PUR. No fear of PUR Many processors have considered changing to PUR for a while, but the
need to clean their edgebanding machine after an application of PUR adhesive makes them hesitate. There is a video tutorial on this exact topic on the Ostermann website, www.ostermann.eu. It shows in detail the necessary steps to change from EVA to PUR hotmelt adhesive and back. PUR hotmelt adhesives from Ostermann’s own brand, REDOCOL, are particularly attractive – there is a large selection of high-quality products at economical prices. In addition, Ostermann supplies matching products to clean the

The knottec system from Power Adhesives is the fastest way to repair knot defects and other forms of deep wood damage. Knots and deep scratches in wood can be filled quickly and easily using a special knot-filling adhesive that is applied with a 12mm tec hotmelt glue gun. The system also includes a pair of handy heat-sink blocks that can be used to create a ‘form’ around any knot holes that go through, or are on the edge of, areas of wood that need repair. Once the damaged area has been filled, the knottec knot-filling adhesive takes just minutes to cool before the excess can be trimmed with a flush plane tool, such as the Mouseplane. The repaired area can then be sanded, painted or treated as normal, achieving a high-quality finish to the restored wood. Ideal for repairing furniture Because it is so tough, knottec is suitable for making repairs to wood flooring, doors, window frames, furniture and more. This knotfilling adhesive is also available in 15 different colours to help users achieve the best colour match possible. This unique repair process for knot defects and other forms of deep wood damage can now be used with the fully portable b-tec 308 and 808 glue guns. The compact b-tec 308, and the larger, higher output b-tec 808 battery-powered glue guns both feature an eco-mode setting that will significantly extend the battery life for any given battery size. B-tec 308 users can work for up to five hours, uninterrupted, while b-tec 808 users can work for up to 3.5 hours. The b-tec cordless glue guns have been designed to use the widely available Ryobi 18V ONE+ range of lithium+ batteries and chargers. When used with a Badaptor battery adaptor, customers can use their 18V DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, Bosch Professional, Ridgid or AEG

The Kenyon Group supplies some of the best hotmelt adhesives on the market, especially when it come to edgebanding, which has been the company’s focus point for many years. As new products come onto the market, one adhesive range has remained unchanged, standing the test of time and for good reasons. Offering both EVA and PUR technologies, Henkel’s Technomelt Dorus HKP range of hotmelt adhesive cartridges provides exceptional gluing performance and an easy-to-use option for HolzHer edgebanders. Having been specifically designed for Holz-Her
FP335_Pages PF.indd 50
edgebanders, they are compatible for use on all of the machines with feed-rates from 10m/min. PUR/EVA cartridge adhesives for Holz-Her edgebanders With more and more companies choosing PURHM adhesives for the many performance benefits they provide, Technomelt Dorus HKP27 PUR has quickly become a key choice for Holz-Her edgebanders, making it the go-to adhesive for kitchen, door, cubicle and bathroom furniture manufacture, allowing a high degree of moisture and heat resistance to be achieved. Technomelt Dorus HKP27 PUR also
provides many additional benefits such as cold flexibility resistance, high initial strength and very tight joints, which can achieve invisible glue lines. Technomelt Dorus HKP 20 and 25 Where high moisture or heat resistance is not required, for example bedroom furniture, EVA adhesives are the ideal choice for companies. The Technomelt Dorus HKP range has an exceptional offering with Technomelt Dorus HKP20 and Technomelt Dorus HKP25 – between these two all the bases are covered, helping achieve the production line finishes that
are expected in today’s competitive markets. Technomelt Dorus HKP 20 – Unfilled, transparent, EVA edgebanding hotmelt for Holz-Her equipment allows for thinner coat weights and high glue mileage, making this a premium EVA grade. Technomelt Dorus HKP 25 – Filled EVA edgebanding hotmelt for Holz-Her equipment, is available in a range of colours (natural, white, brown and black), so no matter what edging colour is decided on, the user be assured that the adhesive options available will have it covered. granules. This clever and innovative addition provides companies access to other high-performance grades from the range, such as Technomelt Dorus KS 351 unfilled edgebanding or Technomelt PUR 270/7 G (granules), both of which are recognised for their clean running and outstanding gluing
performance. The Henkel name is quite rightly associated with quality and market leading technologies, and this does not purely apply to their adhesives, but also to their extensive range of hot melt cleaners, which cover everything from surface cleaning through to thorough system/application
equipment cleaning. Given that an effective cleaning process can make all the difference to meeting deadlines, maximising output and achieving daily goals, Kenyon Group is here to help set businesses on the right path and ensure they are getting the most out of their day.
Henkel Technomelt 270/7 PUR Granules Having recognised the gap in the market, Henkel made the decision to manufacture its Premium PUR grade – the tried, tested and proven Technomelt 270/7 – in a granular form, allowing companies to run the PUR adhesive on their existing edgebanding lines without the outlay and hassle of purchasing new equipment. This has proved very successful and provided easy access to PUR technology for every company, opening the door to what can be achieved with PUR and increasing the quality of the finished goods. Henkel PUR granules make gluing easy, with their ability to be used on customers’ existing edgebanding lines, convenient, flexible and costsaving advantages. Technomelt PUR 270/7 is supplied in 12kg cartons, with each carton containing 16 x 750g individual foil packs of PUR granules. This provides a cost-effective option for middle- to low-volume users, by allowing them to control the amount of adhesive being used against their scheduled volume of work. Foil packs that have been opened
FP335_Pages PF.indd 51
can be wrapped and taped and will be good for around 48 hours, reducing wastage and saving money. PUR adhesives and good housekeeping When it comes to cleaning, as with any PUR adhesive, a waxbased cleaner such as Technomelt Cleaner 2) is required to prevent the adhesive from cross-linking and curing within the machine. With
the larger 2kg blocks, normally one or two cleaning slugs will have to be purged through the system, to clean it down of any remaining PUR within it. Henkel’s PUR granules offer the ability to gauge the adhesive level within the glue pot throughout the day and run it down towards the end of the shift, meaning there is very little PUR adhesive left in the glue pot prior to cleaning. Use the recommended cleaner for
Henkel PUR granules (Technomelt Cleaner 4), which is supplied in a blue granule form, and can be put directly into the glue pot. Normally half to a full cup will be sufficient. This reduces cleaning times and allows for a quick start-up the following morning. Kenyon is proud to be a Henkel Premium Partner, covering furniture and building components. 0161 627 1001 www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Sanding
The Roba Profile
The Roba Belt
FP335_Pages PF.indd 52
Since the MB Profile brush sanders were introduced to the UK market in 2018, John Penny Woodworking Machinery has seen an “amazing” increase in demand, and already has a number of very successful installations across the industry. MB Maschinenbau is a family business of over 30 years, located in northern Germany at its Herford headquarters. The machines are designed by its owner Ronald Bush, who is supported by his wife and two sons, along with a team of 30 employees. The need for profile sanding in the UK is increasing, and manual sanding is just not a sensible option, especially with rising labour costs. MB offers a wide range of throughfeed sanding machines for solid wood, MDF, veneerwrapped profiles and lacquer or primer sanding applications. John Penny Woodworking Machinery can also equip the sanders for specialist product ranges like structured finish and texturing systems with a fast and simple toolchange. This makes for a
19/12/2021 16:22
very flexible machine for timber claddings and specialist furniture applications. To ensure the very best quality and life of the sanding paper, MB has one clear and simple philosophy, of putting as much sanding paper as possible in contact with the workpiece. The MB Roba Profile N range starts with sanding heads at 400mm diameter, containing 54 MB Flex sanding strips. Each side of the workpiece is sanded by two of these heads rotating clockwise and counter clockwise. It this way, it ensures that all fibres are sanded in which ever direction they lay. Especially after priming, this principle is a guarantee to achieve smooth surfaces. Further enhancing the quality of the finish and ensuring the longevity of the sanding paper, each of the heads is equipped with automatic oscillation as standard. The Roba Profile works with cross sections up to 300mm x 100mm, and with a modular sanding aggregate configuration that can be made to suit specific customer requirements. The profile-sanding ranges from MB work to a fixed right-hand fence so integration to moulding and finishing lines are commonplace, working from speeds of 6-80m/min and above. Further to the Roba Profile, MB offers an upgraded Roba Belt sanding aggregate for faster feed speeds and heavier sanding requirements. The Roba Belt aggregate offers a greater sanding area of 750 x 300mm, again with oscillation as standard. The head is fitted with 122 sanding strips of the company’s ownmanufactured MB Flex system. The Roba Belt is more than capable in high-speed applications, with more than 80m/min upon request – and in the heaviest sanding demands of hardwood. All of the MB profile sanding machines are fitted with touchscreen control, making for swift and accurate profile changes. The control panel offers the ability to store and save profile data, and is equipped with a service schedule. The machine will prompt for standard service requirements and customers can schedule sanding paper change times dependent on production based on a built-in metre counter. All of the sanders are supplied with a full safety enclosure for a dust-free company environment, and doors are interlocked to protect the operators.

It is no coincidence that Kündig sanders can be found in some of the most successful manufacturing companies around the world, and that every day, many of us will either come into contact or rely on a product that has been through a Kündig sanding machine. For many furnituremakers, whether producing by volume – for example, five-piece shaker doors – or bespoke pieces commissioned by architects or private commissions, the one common requirement is to achieve the best possible surface finish. This is where Kündig is particularly well known, and is often the first choice of many furnituremakers, which have welcomed the combination of today’s technology and Swiss engineering. Flying high F/List manufactures over one fifth of the global market for the interior fit-out of both private and business jets, with projects including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Established in 1950, F/List has become a go-to company for many of the aircraft manufacturers due to its knowhow when dealing with different materials, which include carbon fibre, foam, and ultra-light honeycomb. Customers include such companies as Bombardier, Pilatus, Boeing and Embraer. Skiing a-Head Ever wondered how skis and snowboards are made? Or what gives a professional skier an
advantage over their competitor? The answer is Kündig, which produces a series of CNC sanding machines which are used by many of the world’s renowned manufacturers, including Head. The machines have been a key part of the success of worldchampion skiers, in manufacturing the core of the skis. These CNC sanders can perfectly shape the inner core, which has been tested and trialled with minute adjustments to the profile and thickness, which in turn controls the flexibility of the ski or snowboard. When competing for world titles or for old at the Olympics, Kündig has been a go-to company to give the best possible opportunity to claim a place on the podium. Floored by Kündig Trumpf is a manufacturer of quality parquet flooring and has a yearly production of around 200,000m2. When looking at structuring, Trumpf wanted a machine that could offer the same level of accuracy as a wide-belt sander and

the same high-quality, consistent finish. Typically, most structuring machines are usually set rather inaccurately and then need regular adjustment when the brushes start to wear. However, as with all industries, products evolve and higher targets are set, and where working to a couple of tenths of a millimetre used to be the norm, today’s standards dictate accuracy within a couple of hundredths of a millimetre. Typically, Kündig’s experience and technical knowhow provided the solution for Trumpf, which states: “Kundig was the only company in Europe that could help us by brushing test samples for us.” Swiss accuracy Within the Kündig range are a series of machines under the Kündig Precision moniker. These machines are designed like no other and give sanding accuracy to within one hundredth of a millimeter. Typically, these machines are used in both the automotive and aviation industries, for sanding raw
veneer for interior car components such as veneered dashboards, door cappings and vanity panels, insulation materials, carbon fibre and cork, to name just a few. There are even machines used for the calibration of the carbon fibre brakes on commercial aircraft. High-volume production Installed at one of the manufacturing plants for a global Swedish furniture manufacturer are several high-speed veneer and UV sanding lines capable of running at speeds up to 60m/min. These types of machines often run three shifts and are testament to the strength, reliability and consistent quality of finish needed in such a high-production environment. To conclude, packed into every Kündig machine is the wealth of experience and understanding of every technical aspect to give the best possible surface finish, yet making sure every machine is user friendly and easy to handle. 0845 833 0565 www.kundig.co.uk

Finishing Superfici’s new realease is the valtorta bravo 2 – the two-arm Cartesian robot, designed to halve spraying times without sacrificing excellent quality. The seven-axis (extendible to 11) maestro robot, developed for window and door painting lines, has also been updated. New devices and software result in an even faster change of colour, ideal for ‘batch 1’ production needs. A key player is the new compact xl sprayer, designed to satisfy a higher production capacity and ensure a perfect handling of the overspray in the spraying booth. Combined with the excimatt innovative excimer UV system, it creates exceptional super-opaque finishing, a
Benefits include: • Maximum focus on the environment and cutting consumption, thanks to particular energy-saving devices that reduce air and water volumes needed for ventilation and cleaning • Fast, first-class cleaning, thanks to the filters with automatic change, an innovative, fast cleaning system for the paint recovery unit, and air circulation conditions that are always optimal in the spraying environment • And even simpler, more integrated use with other SCM group technologies, thanks to the new Maestro Active Finishing software control. www.scmgroup.com
surprisingly silky effect (if requested), and an incomparable surface resistance, thanks to the absence of mattifying agents in the product. Indeed, excimatt allows for a mechanical micro-texturing to be achieved on the layer of paint applied. This replaces the opaqueness achieved using chemical additives that would normally reduce the scratch resistance on the final painted surface. This technology is extremely effective when treating flat, shaped surfaces, and on the profile, thanks to specific Superfici devices for threedimensional spraying. Excimatt can be applied in roller lines or in thin layers for flat surface painting, and in spray lines to finish shaped panels and edges.

Wood coatings should provide the final product with sufficient protection as well as an attractive appearance. The paint layers must be applied perfectly to the surface to prevent stains, wear, orange peel and blistering. As an expert in wood coating, Sames Kremlinoffers different approaches for each coating. When applying stain, the focus is on refining the wood by highlighting the grains, harmonising differences in colour tone and preventing colour changes over time. The Airspray product range from Sames Kremlin delivers the best results and revolutionises stain application with the help of the patented Vortex and Restrictor technologies. Thanks to refined and more efficient atomisation, they prevent common problems such as staining and streaking, halo effects, disharmony in colour matching and shadowing. They achieve good coverage of hard-to-reach areas and, due to minimum overspray, provide better working conditions and reduced maintenance in the booth. Fast coating in just a few passes is possible, without having to sacrifice a perfect coat of paint. Primers are used as an intermediate step in the coating process to ensure even penetration and distribution of stain and topcoat into the wood. Usually PU, acrylic, cellulose and H2O primers are used here, and a single sealing coat on solid wood is usually sufficient. For this coating step, Sames Kremlin recommends Airless atomisation in combination with the Skill nozzles. This technology from Sames Kremlin uses only half as much material pressure as usual and thus reduces evaporation, reduces bubble formation and produces a high-quality surface. The low speed of the paint particles with the Skill nozzle technology
FP335_Pages PF.indd 60
Medium pressure application with Xcite and 30C25 pump – Airmix technology
allows a shorter distance to the object and results in less overspray. A better transfer rate is achieved and the paint film thickness is higher. Finally, a top coat is applied to enhance the aesthetics of the workpiece or to provide final protection against dust, dirt and UV. This creates a solid and colourless film, which is usually applied in a single layer at the end. Thanks to the low paint particle velocity and the additional 0.5 bar atomising air, the Airmix technology binds sufficient solvent to the paint
particle during application. The 0.5 bar of additional air accompanies the paint particle all the way to the substrate, preventing air from circulating around the particles from the outside and allowing the solvent to evaporate. When applying clear or top coat, the solvent helps to smooth the paint for a particularly glossy and even finish. Airmix technology thus prevents the solvent from evaporating and causing problems such as orange peel. www.sames-kremlin.com

“A really positive climate” – that is what Christian Salvador, founder of Salvamac group, is expecting for 2022: “What’s our mood as we approach the next year? Definitely calm and positive! “In the final weeks of this year, we have a special feeling. The typical anxiety on the eve of a new year has disappeared – the question of whether the upcoming year would be a success for us in the UK, whether our products would be appreciated by customers and dealers ... with some exaggeration, I can say we have the opposite worry, namely that 2022 is so successful that we’ll have too many orders! “Business is going great for us, especially in the UK. At Salvamac, the fruits of our labour during the crisis years are bearing fruit, and our production capacity has now reached saturation. Of course, we have adopted measures and tools so that we can do more, and don’t miss any opportunity,” says Christian, laughing. “All exaggeration apart, we are approaching 2022 with great peace of mind. It is going to be a great year, because companies want and need to invest in our range of products that are necessary to reach a higher level of efficiency. “With this in mind, Salvamac has grown exponentially over the year and has been grouped into three divisions: Cross-cutting, which specialises in the cutting and optimisation of wood; the Air&Painting division, representing the reference point for air suction and filtration systems and wood varnishing; and finally the brand new Salvamac Selection – an innovative evolution from the Salvamac project. “We have significantly enlarged our range of products, added new innovations to the existing ones, expanded our structures and, going against the tide, greatly increased our investments for the future,” says Christian.
FP335_Pages PF.indd 62
SalvaPush 2000
Above: Classic 60 with SalvaStop and dust extraction Above left: Leader 60 briquetting press Left: Combo Upcut Saw with SalvaStop installed
In 2021, this path was enriched and completed with a new version of the innovative optimising saw, SalvaPush 2000. “Optimising wood cutting for the needs of individual customer is part of our DNA,” continues Ziemowit Dolkowksi, partner at Salvamac, “and this is just the beginning. We have created a very flexible and cutting-edge technical solution for improving single boards with defects and qualities or even packs of boards, using the most advanced technologies at a reasonable price.” SalvaPush 2000 comes with a brand-new, easy-to-use software version, featuring website graphics and all the convenience of data setting of a large touchscreen – all electronic components being connected in digital communication.
Moreover, there are new and exclusive mechanical solutions, both for the cutting and the pusher systems, that become part of the complete digital management of the machine communication systems – not only within their electronic components, but, above all, towards external IT systems. Therefore, the new Salvamac Group project has led to the birth of the third division – the Salvamac Selection, which is a selection of different products with the same culture and philosophy that distinguish Salvamac itself. It is a real novelty that the creators, Christian and Ziemowit, define as a revolutionary approach to the market. “Unlike others, we have always believed in the importance of union and aggregation, and we think that
today there is an opportunity for a changing development with strong and positive effects even in the immediate future,” they comment. “Our network and its strength have allowed us to introduce new products focused on the solid wood industry every month.” The new machine presented in 2021 was the briquetting press, Leader 60. Years of experience allowed the company to develop its Leader briquetting presses for the recycling and compression of wood and industrial waste. “Thanks to their design, construction and features, our briquetting presses are widely known for their efficiency and reliability,” says Ziemowit. “The machine has been designed for customers who do not need to process a large amount of material but who nevertheless demand a high-quality briquette for either commercial purposes or their own personal use. A wide range of accessories is also available to customise the machine to every client’s individual needs. “The material to be pressed is loaded into the mini silo. It is fed into the press by a coneshaped auger, which introduces the material directly into the mechanical compacting chamber. A piston then presses the material through the extruder, which is held tight by the piston clamp. Thanks to the friction generated by the pressure of the piston clamp, the material undergoes final compression, producing the briquette.” www.salvamac.com

Hybrid decors combine typical visual characteristics of two different materials. Take for example stone and metal, slate and metal, textile and metal, or even rust combined with the coolness of glossy metal. Ostermann provides matching ABS edgings for the look. Selecting the right decor for furniture is not always straightforward. Do customers prefer the look of stone, textile or rust? Or rather that of glossy metal? Why not both? The ABS edgings Anthracite Metal Rock, Anthracite Metal Fabric, Black Gold Metal Slate and Ferro Bronze have fantasy decors that combine the look of rusty iron, stone, textile or slate with vivid metal effects. These edgings can be used just as well for worktops as for expressive fronts or entire living room, bathroom or kitchen furniture. They are available at Ostermann in dimensions of 23, 33, 43 and 100 x 1 or 2mm, and supplied from small quantities of just 1m. Find all information on the products by typing in the search item “#Highlights11” on the Ostermann website, www.ostermann.eu.

Ostermann’s edgings with hybrid decors unite the visual characteristics of two different materials – a metallic gloss on stone, slate, textile or rust reproductions gives them an entirely new look
ABS edgings Anthracite Metal Rock At first glance, the edging appears to be a classic stone reproduction. Only the correlation with light manifests its artful metal look with matt and gloss effects. The stone finish emphasises the pearlescent character of the decor, and the composition of anthracite and brownish contrasts with scattered lighter and darker inclusions makes the edging an ideal counterpart for wood decors and warm grey hues.
shimmering gold-coloured metal to form a new hybrid decor. The golden shimmer, added like powder to the dark-brown basic colour of the slate reproduction, leads to a very homely and warm impression. The filigree embossing of the surface imitates the natural structure of slate. In interior design, the edging with its dark basic colour goes together harmoniously with realistic wood decors, where the dark brown is mainly reflected in the knotholes and cracks.
Anthracite Metal Fabric Visually reminiscent of both classic tweed and a brushed steal plate, Anthracite Metal Fabric features gloss and interspersed blue-grey areas, adding a metallic effect to the brown-grey basic colour of the edging. With its blue tinge, the edging can be combined well with cool-grey uni colours, bluish white or whitish woods.
Ferro Bronze The ABS edging Ferro Bronze looks like a piece from a weathered iron plate – irregular changes between lighter and darker tones of copper and bronze produce an authentic impression which is further enhanced by a realistic embossing and the irregularly proportioned metallic gloss. The edging goes equally well with lighter wood decors and with uni boards or material reproductions in the monochrome grey or beige colour spectrum. www.ostermann.eu

Everyone loves to give their home a ‘facelift’ every so often, but while it would be lovely to kit a house out with a complete redesign and new furniture, it is not always an option financially. One way in which a house can be given a fresh, new look is with veneered panels and doors. Quasar’s veneered products are the perfect replacement for solid wood, giving a home the look of natural wood – but at a fraction of the price. Based in Shivers Business Park in Toomebridge, Quasar’s experienced industry professionals, teamed with an impressive range of high-quality veneers and veneered panels, means that the company is able to offer top-class solutions and advice in even the most challenging of applications. “Operating from our brand-new veneer showroom – the only one of its type on the island of Ireland – Quasar enables the most demanding designs and construction projects to become a reality,” says Quasar’s founder, Alan Dickson. “Our premier-grade veneered panels and doors can be produced to any size or thickness, but while the size and thickness, or combination of core materials, may vary from client to client, our customers can be assured of one thing – our panels are produced to order using architectural quality veneers at a top-quality level, while still reflective of affordable price. “Our products offer the finish of real wood, but have all the advantages of engineered products, particularly in terms of movement due to changes in ambient moisture content. We can supply lyons in any configuration, but can also supply in industry-standard sizes. “The process is standard and simple but is carried out to the highest quality possible. Firstly, the raw boards are calibrated through the sander. While they’re being calibrated, the leaves of veneer
FP335_Pages PF.indd 66
are then measured and cut to the required length. Once cut, they then need to be stitched together to the correct width of the board to form a veneer layon. “When we have the veneer layons stitched and the boards calibrated, they both need to be bonded together. The veneer is then pressed onto the boards, which are both placed into either our Multi Patton Press, which can press up to 2800 x 1350mm, or into our STD Flat Bed Press, which can press boards up to 3800 x 1350mm. “The panels are then trimmed to remove any excess veneer around the edge of the panel, and are then ready to be dispatched.” While Alan and his team are very proud of the range of veneers they offer, including those from global companies such as Mundy and Tabu, he firmly believes that it is the company’s ethos with regard to customer service that is the key to the company’s success. “Every veneer,” Alan continues, “is given the ‘Quasar treatment’ at every stage of the process. Every veneer is subjected to our perfect attention to detail and crafted into a range of fantastic surfacing and decorative panels that are sure to complement every construction project! “We are renowned for our ability to react to our customers’ requirements quickly and efficiently, but the speed at which we deliver in no way compromises the quality of what we produce. “I firmly believe that our team are as important – if not more important on occasion – than the products that we create. Our attention to detail is phenomenal and we make sure that every veneer or veneered product that leaves this building has been given 100% attention to detail. “We’re proud of what we do, and I think that is reflected in the quality of our work,” concludes Alan. www.wearequasar.com

The demands on modern CNC nesting machines are extensive. On the one hand, they must be efficient to help save materials and resources – on the other, they need to provide increased performance and be highly versatile. It is precisely these demands that HOMAG has responded to with the design of its new generation of CNC nesting machines. Improving sustainability, flexibility and performance were all guiding factors in the development of the new models. HOMAG’s nesting machines are engineered to make easy work of machining and dividing panelshaped materials for carcass furniture production and the dividing and finishing of furniture fronts. They also make the processing of stair stringers and door leaves effortless. With the release of the CENTATEQ N-210 and N-510 CNC machining centres in November, HOMAG has truly redefined nesting. Clever revisions and creative engineering, with a focus on waste reduction and sustainability, have significantly increased the value proposition of these machines. More flexible workflow configurations The new CNC machines not only handle the classic nesting tasks, but also their 5-axis processing capabilities provide added flexibility.
The maximum total height in the Z-direction on these new machines has been extended, enabling the processing of material thicknesses up to 260mm. The new generation of machines is available in both standalone and automated configurations. They can be specified with updated matrix table arrangements to increase both performance and flexibility. In addition to the table structure, the vacuum air-cushion concept and material handling components have been rethought and further optimised. To improve non-productive times and setup, the toolchanging system has also been updated. Automation adaptations for changing performance demands Performance requirements often change as HOMAG’s customers grow their businesses. To accommodate this, the base machines can be upgraded to meet shifting performance demands with 14 automation options. The performance-enhancing automation programs for the new series were developed for high-volume workflow demands. They include, for example: the addition of lifting tables for easier loading of material; automatic belt conveyors for pushing out finished parts; and complete
integrations with saw and storage-system combinations or material-handling robots. Dynamic shuttle operation The pendulum mode, which allows the operator to continuously swap out parts while the machine runs at the other end of the bed, is extended using a separate vacuum supply and ventilation of the table sections. This highly efficient and seamless alternation between the left and right table sections is extended by ‘dynamic pendulum operation’. In a similar way to the HOMAG console table machines, the vacuum fields are assigned to the table sections and can be controlled individually. HOMAG has also created the ability to dynamically control the machines’ air cushion functions. This means that individual workpieces of different sizes and surface finishes can easily be processed in pendulum mode. Material yield utilisation and part identification drives production Sustainability is at the forefront of the utilisation of these machines. They were designed to generate as little material waste as possible. Thus, the nests are optimised via intelligent software solutions to deliver the best possible yield.
“Where possible, machine movements and operating sequences have been combined and shared to increase the service life of machine components and bring additional value to HOMAG customers”

To ensure parts are identified for secondary processing, such as edgebanding, and for assembly after production, barcode labels can be applied to each item. These labels provide valuable information for transporting parts through the production process. For example, the type of material, edgebanding information, part size, order number and even part-related graphics and company logos can be added. Active vacuum solutions – new valve technology The new series of nesting machines provide many different table sizes to suit specific needs and requirements. Independent of the table size, three configurations of the automated vacuum field layouts are offered – Classic, Advanced and Premium. The Classic layout is the standard for HOMAG’s earlier nesting models. The field sizes are designed in such a way that the underlying vacuum zones can be applied to concentrate vacuum pressure to any number of common panel sizes. The Advanced layout creates a more balanced machine. The vacuum field sizes are engineered at both the front and back of the machine to allow for flexible fixturing of a wide range of panel sizes, as well as smaller preformatted parts. The Premium layout consists of many small, symmetrical vacuum fields that are controlled individually. With this variant, the operator can activate only one field, for even more flexibility and efficiency in the future. New valve technology has been installed in the table for this purpose. It generates the vacuum output required for nesting workpieces and precisely
maintains that vacuum pressure throughout the nesting process so that no excess energy is required. The matrix table option consists of a raised island and groove pattern that has a consistent grid dimension to provide optimal vacuum flow. The transition between the individual matrix table sections has been redesigned so that this transition point is always constant and suction cups can be positioned across these segments without restriction. This is a very beneficial feature for 5-axis machining. More options for toolchanges and drilling gears For short changeover times, the 8-place toolchanger riding along the X-axis of the machine can be selected as standard. Depending on the variety of machining and application requirements, different versions can also be selected to accommodate 14 or 22 tools. The previous benchmark for toolchanging times on the HOMAG nesting machines has been significantly reduced, and the chip-to-chip toolchange times have been improved. Within some of the automated configurations, the changing of the tools can be carried out in parallel with the loading of panels, saving additional time. For those requiring advanced toolchanging technology and speed, an X/Y ride-along toolchanger is available which can be paired with a second toolchanger to provide a combination of speed and flexibility. The new nesting series provides a wide selection of drilling gears with up to 21 different drilling gear units. Various combinations of vertical and horizontal drilling, as well as grooving, can be handled by these units without the machine requiring a toolchange. HOMAG’s patented quickchange system for drill bit changes is also incorporated. 5-axis processing on the CENTATEQ N-510 brings added value For additional versatility, the proven HOMAG

“Both the new CENTATEQ models are highly efficient, increasing yield and decreasing waste”
DRIVE5CS 5-axis head is now provided with the CENTATEQ N-510 series. As well as traditional nesting, this series can be used as a conventional CNC machining centre. Parts can be elevated, referenced and machined on five sides. The new model provides further nesting operations in addition to the typical ones such as part sizing, shaping and vertical drilling. The extra functions include the horizontal drilling for dowels, the creation of mitres with a 350mm saw blade, and the efficient machining of solid wood components such as stair stringers and door components. Greater sustainability and service life Commenting on the innovative design of the new models, Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s MD, says: “As well as configuring the new nesting machines to meet specific technical and functional applications, these nesting CNCs are engineered with a focus on conserving resources and achieving sustainability. “Times for toolchanging have been shortened whilst the extraction of dust and the cleaning of the spoil board have been significantly improved. Both the new CENTATEQ models are highly efficient, increasing yield and decreasing waste. “Engineering advances have minimised the use of electricity and compressed air, and maximised dust collection. Where possible, machine movements and operating sequences have been combined and shared to increase the service life of machine components and bring additional value to HOMAG customers.” For a demonstration or more information on HOMAG’s machinery or software, contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424. www.homag.com

Since the end of March 2021, some applicants who could prove they had committed to a project – for example, if they were in the process of applying for planning or Local Authority permits – were able to apply for a coronavirus extension, as long as the application and installation was to complete by the end of March 2022. Ofgem and the BSL register are now actively carrying out routine inspections on RHIaccredited installations to ensure that the operation and maintenance of the boiler is being carried out. This month’s article by Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering, looks at the things that OFGEM and the BSL are picking up on as they carry out their inspections …
•
•
•
•
• If the installation is non-compliant, payments from the Government will be withheld or the installation can be thrown off of the scheme. If the BSL spot non-compliance, they notify the local authority and Ofgem. Here are some of the areas they will be looking at: • Was planning or permitted development given in writing for the chimney? If not, then non-compliance • Does the wood-manufacturing process that produces the fuel for the installation have a part B permit? If required under guidance note PGN-602 (more than 1,000m3 of wood or wood-based products processed in a 12-month period.) If not, then noncompliance
•
•
Does the site have an exemption to burn waste (less than 50kg/hr) or a permit for a SWIP (small waste incineration plant up to 90 kgs/h) or a part B permit? If not, then non-compliance Is the installation in a smoke control area? Then the boiler must be an exempt appliance as listed on DEFRA’s website. If not, non-compliance Does the chimney have chimney height approval from the local authority? This must be in writing – if not, non-compliance Is the chimney within 2km of a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest)? If yes, then full chimney modelling is required for chimney height determination. If not, noncompliance Is the installation serviced by the manufacturer at least annually? If not, noncompliance If burning over 90kg/hr, is the plant tested annually by an independent test house for all emissions? If not, non-compliance Are daily and weekly logs of visual and olfactory emissions being noted and recorded? If not, non-compliance
The points listed above are not the full total of areas being looked at. Larger plants over 1MW have additional requirements such as fuel reporting and recordings. Ranheat is seeing an ever-increasing number of companies contacting us over maintenance and non-compliance issues. A lot of Eastern European systems found their way into the UK

woodworking industry at the peak of the tariff rates for the RHI. Unfortunately, many of the companies supplying these appliances have disappeared. The customers were never made aware of the need for permits and permissions and are now left with a non-compliant installation and are being removed from the RHI. So how did this come about? Well, a lot of the systems from Europe were actually designed to work with wood pellets or virgin woodchip, not with industrial woodwaste. Even if the fuel is 100% virgin timber, if it comes from a wood-manufacturing process then it needs the permits and permissions as it is classed as an industrial waste product, and as such needs to be permitted. For a large number of the sales, people never made the customer aware of the requirements, either through lack of knowledge on the requirements or just to get the sale. So, if you’re one of the sites that has a noncompliance issue or issues, Ranheat are here to help. Ranheat – as the UK’s leading manufacturer of industrial wood-fired heaters and boilers – are able to help with obtaining compliance. In some cases, it is just helping with the permits and consents, or modifying installations to make them compliant. This might be the introduction of ceramic filtration to the flue gasses, or modifying the combustion system for NOx reduction.
Ranheat can also manufacture spare parts, such as grates and augers, that can no longer be sourced from Europe because of delays due to Covid and Brexit. 01604 750005 sales@ranheat.com www.ranheat.com

An events production company has purchased a second woodwaste heater to reduce its waste disposal costs and keep its workshop warm and functional during the winter months. The Borehamwood-based company is a trade supplier to the live event, corporate and film industries, providing scenic carpentry and bespoke set building solutions, as well as a full turnkey audio and technical service. While the business tries hard to minimise its woodwaste, there is inevitably a large amount created, and the team at Light Fantastic is understandably keen to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. After doing some research, the company got in touch with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology. The company ordered a WT5 heater a few years ago, and has since purchased an additional WT10 heater, which Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers installed earlier this year. The investment has made many positive differences to the business. The woodwaste heaters keep the workshop warm, even on really cold days, and the business is also saving money on skips as all the woodwaste can be burned in the heater. General manager, Chris Bertram, explains: “We realised that purchasing a woodwaste heater could solve our woodwaste disposal problem, whilst also helping warm up our workshop, which is a cold place to be in winter. “The building has no heating installed in the warehouse and workshop spaces, and with a high roof, plus two sets of roller shutter doors, it’s a difficult place to keep warm. The cold also

caused issues with production, for example, if the wood got damp or if it was too cold for the paint to dry. We were very impressed with our first heater, so it was an easy decision to purchase the second one.“ “We’re delighted that the woodwaste heaters are helping Light Fantastic Production Services reduce its waste disposal bills and get free heating in the warehouse and workshop,” says the MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft. “We have many event and exhibition companies interested in woodwaste heaters due to the amount of waste wood these industries naturally create.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise
in woodwaste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of woodwaste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to -60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau – a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com

A proven and popular meeting point is also the special show, DesignObjekt - ObjektDesign, by the Fachverband Schreinerhandwerk Bayern, which offers advice and valuable practical examples. The latest trends and innovations within the industry will also be shown here, from power tools to woodworking machines. Planning in Nuremberg and at the registered companies is in full swing. “The preparations are naturally more intensive than usual,” explains Elke Harreiß, head of Fensterbau Frontale. “The exhibitors are preparing their appearance along the guidelines set out by the incidenceindependent framework hygiene concept for trade fair venues in Bavaria. “This year, it is more important than ever for us to provide exhibitors with close support during the planning phase. That’s
why we offer regular webinars to provide advice regarding the implementation of the applicable regulations and to clarify individual questions.” Spanning around 48,000m2, about three quarters of the available exhibition space at Fensterbau Frontale 2022 is occupied a quarter of the year before the event. Some 570 exhibitors – half of them international – have registered. With almost 400 exhibitors, Holz-Handwerk occupies around 31,000m2 of the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre and is thus almost fully booked. The current registration status can be found at frontale.de/exhibitors-products or Holz-Handwerk.de/exhibitorsproducts. www.frontale.de/en www.holz-handwerk.de/en Image rights: Fensterbau Frontale (top) NuernbergMesse/Thomas Geiger Holz-Handwerk (below) NuernbergMesse/Uwe Niklas & Heiko Stahl

Trade fair duo, Fensterbau Frontale and Holz-Handwerk, will be held concurrently from March 29th to April 1st 2022 in the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre, Germany. After a four-year break due to the pandemic, Fensterbau Frontale will present the window, door and facade industry with global innovations in profile systems, glass in architecture, fittings, fastening technology, safety technology, machinery, equipment and much more. Architects, carpenters, window and facade manufacturers, as well as the trade, will finally be able to cultivate business relationships in person again, experience products live and come together as an industry. The fair’s supporting program includes the Fensterbau Frontale FORUM in hall 3A, where current industry topics will be discussed in keynote speeches by experts, as well as the 10th Forum Architecture-Window-Facade. In addition, there will be guided tours through the exhibition halls on the topics of installation technology, security technology and building access, window production and innovative window constructions, modern windows as well as construction elements, prefabricated elements and accessories.
