The first order of the day this month, is to join many from across our industry and pay our respects to Queen Elizabeth II, whose reign demonstrated a sense of duty, kindness and unwavering commitment that will resonate for generations to come – long will she be remembered. And now a new monarch, King Charles III, may his tenure be as positive as that of his ‘dear mama’. From the perspective of the furniture industry, there are a number of well deserving furniture manufacturers and cabinet makers which hold Royal Warrants for supplying the Royal household. We hope that this highly respected accolade can continue to serve as recognition of the quality standards that can be achieved by a select few among the UK’s furniture and joinery community.

As for the political situation, our new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, who along with the new Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng has delivered a ‘mini budget’ providing much to consider for furniture and joinery businesses. In summary, there would seem to be a degree of positive news of businesses: the reversal of the previously announced April NHI increase, the avoidance of the planned corporation tax rise, keeping the Annual Investment Allowance for plant and technology investment at £1m rather moving to £200k in March next year, the unveiling of development ‘business zones’ with special tax breaks, a reduction of the barriers to build new infrastructure, an immediate stamp duty adjustment, and an initial six-month discounted energy supply for business. We’ll asses these issues over the coming months – so please do send me your take on these announcements …

Against this background of economic uncertainty, putting it mildly, furniture and joinery manufacturers are stepping forward to the autumn and winter which traditionally is a time for retailers to put their well-rehearsed sales plans into action. It is quite clear that British furniture and joinery manufacturers we have been speaking to recently, fall into, broadly speaking, two distinct camps: those which are struggling or worse, and those which are incredibly busy with demands for their services running long into 2023 and beyond for some businesses. Our industry remains in confident mood as demand of quality services continues to be strong – in fact, finding good staff and keeping the logistics flowing remain top of the agenda.

And it is that challenging agenda that furniture and joinery manufacturers are coming together to discuss and analyse with gathered expert speakers and assembled industry suppliers our inaugural conference later this month. If you haven’t yet secured your tickets, do be quick as I have to confirm delegate numbers by 14th October. Drop me an email too secure your complimentary ticket.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

AJB Group continues its charity with local initiative

Residents at the Corby Homeless Project were treated to some Indian savouries, as part of a charitable initiative by the team at AJB Group to give back to the community.

AJB Group’s CEO, Amarjit Binji, provided finely-wrapped packages, each containing a selection of samosas and pakoras. He was greeted by Lucy Brooks and Susie Skelham, pictured, Resident Engagement & Project Lead and Homeless Pathway Co-ordinator, respectively, who gave a guided tour of the building.

Jo Burns, CEO of Encompass charity which runs Corby Homeless Project, said: “We would like to thank Amarjit and his team from AJB Group for their kind and generous foodbank donation.

With an ever-increasing rise in the cost of living and the likely impact of this on homelessness, even stronger partnerships are going to be vital. Whilst Encompass continues to go over and beyond its call of duty, it’s organisations such as AJB Group that can help add even greater value to all that we do.”

The latest quarterly Chain figures found just under 3000 people sleeping rough in London between April and June 2022. This represents an alarming 10% rise on the 2714 people recorded in the previous three months.

As it stands, nearly seven million people are said to be going hungry in the UK, including two million children. That’s an increase of two million since the pandemic.

By next month, almost half of all children will be living in families who’ll be unable to meet the cost of some basic necessities, research suggests.

AJB Group is a manufacturer of world-class joinery products.

Its client list includes The Shard, BBC TV Centre, Centre Point and Battersea Power Station.

Corby Homeless Project is a partnership with North Northamptonshire Council, aimed at helping those who are homeless, both immediately and longer term.

As well as supporting with accommodation, residents are supported to learn to cook and clean, access their benefits, budget and plan for the future, complete training courses, education or be work ready and access other agencies such as health services, drug and alcohol support, the job centre and domestic abuse services.

Egger boosts recycled content through £15m investment

Wood-based material manufacturer, Egger UK Limited, has invested over £15 million into recycling operations at its site in Hexham.

The investment reinforces the company’s commitment to make More From Wood, by improving the quality of recycled wood used to make Egger’s chipboard panels.

Employing the latest technology, the new recycling plant will segregate, clean, and chip waste wood that would otherwise be burnt or sent to landfill. Recycled material maintains the carbon stored in the wood and benefits the environment.

Thanks to the new, state-ofthe-art processing facilities and the high quality recycled material processed, Egger is able to increase the amount of recycled wood in each chipboard panel it produces.

By improving its recycling processes to get a better quality raw material, Egger can guarantee that the quality of the panel is not compromised.

Alex West, product manager at Egger UK, said, “Increasing our recycled content answers the demand from the interior design, furniture, and housebuilding

industries for more environmentally conscious products. We are a major supplier to these industries, so it’s important that we lead the way when it comes to sustainable product innovation.”

Alex continues, “Not only does this investment strengthen our closed loop production cycle, but it also demonstrates the importance and commitment the company

places on a sustainable supply of raw materials.”

Plans for the project started in 2019, with breaking ground taking place in October 2020. Led by Andrew Shepherd with Egger’s dedicated UK project team, installation was supported by the wider Egger Group, Cubby Construction, Mibex Ltd, Garwen Enterprises, and Parkgate.

The team has collectively spent over 130,000 hours on this project and navigated many external challenges during the build, including COVID-19, skill shortages, and material availability. After commencing commissioning in August, chipboard production with increased recycled content is underway.

Record training growth for Daltons Wadkin

The Daltons Wadkin “red team” of trainers is celebrating a significant milestone in the delivery of certificated operator training courses throughout the UK and Ireland. The past 12 months has seen a record 1250 individual learners successfully trained across all types of woodworking machines, abrasive wheels and hand operated power tools.

Daltons Wadkin are a PIABC Quality Assured training provider and have been providing industry led courses for over 15 years, continually honing the content to meet both customer and legal requirements.

One of the fastest growing departments within the company, Daltons Wadkin has expanded its training team to 4 full time trainers to keep pace with demand and are now recruiting a fifth. Each trainer is a qualified teacher and assessor and has a minimum of 10 years experience in the woodworking sector operating industrial machinery.

“Our standards are extremely high when it comes to recruiting trainers”, comments managing director Alex Dalton. “Our customers look to us for a professional, reliable service. The stakes are extremely high. We are working in one of the most dangerous industries with regards to accident rates and it is imperative that our trainers are suitably qualified, experienced, and confident in their knowledge.”

Training is tailored to individual requirements, whether an experienced operator or novice learner. With absolutely no PowerPoints, courses are delivered on and around customers own machinery. This hands-on approach ensures teaching and assessment is relevant to the customers workplace and production.

Each machine type is covered by an individual training unit. The aim of each course unit is to inform, access and certify the learner in Safe Setting and Operator Training on each woodworking machine in

accordance with the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, the Workplace Health Safety and Welfare Regulations 1992 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

A key component to the success of the Daltons Wadkin training department is the course material. Every machine unit is accompanied by a detailed training book. Developed in house, the course material serves as a training tool during course delivery and is kept by each learner for future reference.

“We are very proud of our course material; it is unique in the industry. Working with the HSE we are continually honing the content to ensure the latest rules and regulations are reflected”, enthuses Alex.

The Sash Window Workshop achieve Carbon Neutral Plus

Having commissioned Carbon Footprint Ltd (www. carbonfootprint.com) to conduct an independent audit earlier this year, which found that The Sash Window Workshop had reduced their emissions by an impressive 39%, the company decided the next step was to offset their emissions.

However, as an environmentally responsible company, The Sash Window Workshop felt that this wasn’t enough. So, they decided to offset all the emissions that they produced and then go further still and offset additional carbon from the atmosphere to achieve Carbon Neutral Plus.

The Sash Window Workshop believe that they are the first timber window and door company in the UK to achieve Carbon Neutral Plus status, which means that you are required to offset 125% of your carbon emissions.

When choosing which projects to support to reduce carbon emissions, the company felt it was important to choose projects that would make a real difference to local communities at the same time as reducing carbon emissions.

With the assistance of Carbon Footprint Ltd, they set out to invest in carbon offsetting projects that were Gold Standard CERs, Gold Standard Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) or Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) certified.

After assessing the different options, The Sash Window Workshop decided to invest in two offsetting projects, one of which focused on reducing deforestation in the Amazon and a second which helps provide improved cookstoves in Uganda.

The largest remaining rainforest on our planet, the Amazon is known for its biodiversity. The project works to prevent unplanned deforestation in native forests, caused by logging, squatting and attempts to implement pastures, and provides legal land-use permits for villages that actively participate in forest protection. It is expected to help avoid over 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide over a 40-year period by managing the land to reduce deforestation, through rigorous monitoring and enforcement.

Wood fuels for cooking is one of the major causes of deforestation in Uganda. Over 95% of the population of Uganda rely on fuels

such as wood or charcoal for cooking on fuel intensive traditional cooking stoves, which emit high levels of carbon. The cookstoves project helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by distributing fuelefficient stoves which reduce fuel consumption and reduce the cost for poor families while improving health by reducing pollution.

The Sash Window Workshop are proud to support both these

worthy causes and the company is committed to reducing their carbon footprint further and improving sustainability.

Managing director at The Sash Window Workshop, Richard Dollar, pictured left, commented: “We are delighted to have achieved Carbon Neutral Plus status, reflecting our company ethics and belief in the importance of helping protect and preserve things for future generations.

“We are proud to be leading the timber window and door industry in reducing and offsetting carbon emissions and hope to encourage others in the industry to follow our footsteps and become more environmentally friendly. In the future we hope to reduce our carbon emissions further still and, as the technology continues to improve, we will look to make the necessary changes to achieve this.”

New man at the wood sector helm for Mirka

Mirka has a well-deserved reputation in the furniture and woodworking sector for its innovative abrasive developments and of course its outstanding tools and technology. Neil Newbrook, the company’s new wood sector manager was appointed earlier this year and John Legg took a trip to Mirka’s Milton Keynes Office to meet him.

Sat across from Neil, I asked him how his first six months in his new role had been… “It’s been great,” came the immediate response, “I’ve really enjoyed getting familiar with the industry from a slightly different perspective. I had six years at Mirka where I was looking after customers in the north-east, visiting end-users and distributors across that region in a technical sales role – so I was already very well versed in all things Mirka. Prior to that I have been in a number of wood industry roles for more than 20 years before I started with Mirka.”

Clearly with the internal relationship already in place and functioning well, promoting from within is typically an advantageous move for both the company and the employee. Neil says he realised straight away that this was a role that would suit him.

“When we did an internal reshuffle earlier this year, and this opportunity came up, I just wanted to do it straight away – it was exactly where I wanted to be, as I would be representing a leading brand on a national scale.

“Since the appointment, I’ve found it very interesting and it’s been great to have had the experience with Mirka up to this point, because I think without that, I might have struggled a little bit.”

Settling into his role as wood sector manager, Neil is naturally now more involved in the strategy side of Mirka’s development.

“Now I get to see more of the development process for new products and speak with the incredible team based in Finland. It’s been great to learn from their extensive experience and give them feedback from the UK. It

sounds like marketing speak, but they really do pay attention to what our customers talk about. All the products Mirka are developing are trying to solve a problem we have discovered by having such a close relationship with the end-users” explains Neil.

As part of his role, Neil is part of this critical process: “I am learning more about the process from that point of view, so rather than merely being given products to take to market, my new role encompasses this important part of the wider theoretical and creative process.”

In addition, Neil is also involved in the marketing side of things, which includes seeing how things work at trade events, media and so forth. In terms of priorities for Neil, clearly his primary task of getting to know Mirka’s national woodworking customer base is not something that will be achieved overnight.

“I love meeting joinery and furniture manufacturers faceto-face, seeing their projects in development and finding out how Mirka can help them achieve their goals. It’s exciting to be able to broaden my horizon to include all areas of the UK and I cannot wait to visit more end users and distributors. Of course, it takes time to do this, but at least I know my diary will never be empty! In fact, Mirka UK are currently reorganising our Technical Sales team to create

six Wood Sector Specialists to visit, demonstrate and advise. We’ve also just recently added an automated sanding arm to our Training Centre in Milton Keynes to show this new technology for consistent sanding.” Ian Deery, the Business Development Manager in charge of the UK’s AIROS project added “With automation you can take a repetitive sanding process and remove errors, deliver consistency, and save time”

“I am a person who is very happy in this job and am very excited about the future too.”

Regarding the future, Neil was able to give some insight into Mirka’s forthcoming innovation plans.

“We expect a number of new woodworking sector options to make their debut next year,” says Neil, “we have a couple of abrasive projects currently in development for the wood sector, and with all being well, will be launched in 2023. We will also be sharing a lot more details on the sustainability projects Mirka are involved in as part of our focus on responsible manufacturing”

“Looking further ahead, the next four, five, six years look set to be a very progressive phase for Mirka’s woodworking sector, so watch this space!”

In addition to the development and production of the company’s products, Neil also touched on

Mirka’s own production processes. Innately, the Finns have a close affinity with the natural world, and Mirka likewise has always looked to be very considered in the way it approaches energy consumption and the carbon footprint of its business.

“Recently the company has developed new abrasive manufacturing machines, these new machines have a lot of possibilities for us,” says Neil, “in terms of how we use grain, how we make the backing, and how we apply the grain to the backing, which creates a number of possibilities for Mirka in terms of the production process and, importantly, sustainability.

“Traditional abrasive manufacturing of setting the grain to the backing is a very power hungry process – you need a lot of heat and it takes a lot of time. The company’s improved manufacturing process can achieve this, on the new Galaxy for instance, using just a fraction of the energy. The new approach also provides increased production flexibility and an example of this is the change of production runs from one product to another can now be managed much more quickly than before.”

Over the next twelve months or so, Neil will be delivering the Mirka mantra of ‘we have the product portfolio that will cover every single application within the wood sector.’ The timing of Neil’s appointment appears to have been well conceived. With his groundwork well under way and a tranche of new products hitting the wood sector next year and beyond, Neil and his team look certain to become increasingly familiar faces to those looking for premium abrasive technology solutions.

With Neil’s appointment, Mirka UK’s wood sector team is well positioned as it gears up for a series of impending product launches which confirms yet again the Finnish firm’s innovative and customer-oriented stance.

EGGER ‘Leeds’ the way

EGGER has set the wheels in motion, triumphantly making a statement in Leeds with a brandnew, deliciously colourful display at Lawcris headquarters. Cleverly merging office and showroom, the space provides customers, designers and architects with a fully functioning, imaginatively vibrant, social space to meet, share and develop creations.

Lauren Barker, head of marketing, explains “Most people walk into the room with a slight gasp, the space takes them by surprise and immediately piques their interest. Music is playing in the background as they instantly start pulling out the big sample boards and placing them into the two big gallery areas, one on each side of the room. Ample lighting allows them to play with colours and combinations in a more authentic environment. There is optimal space to stand back to look at the arrangements from multiple viewpoints. The room

is suddenly a buzz of creativity, an explosion of visual pleasure.”

“Once the colour palettes begin to reveal themselves, textures need to be determined. The eye-catching table in the centre of the room has all the answers with ingenious holders to place the boards upright, side by side. This allows people to weigh up the different elements closely from the comfort of their own seats at the table, carefully choosing the perfect surface for their project.”

EGGER is renowned for its textures. It truly understands that the feel of a surface is important and has invested a lot of money into developing woodgrains and materials to be more realistic than ever. This natural appearance is highly appealing to designers. Not only for their project’s purse strings, but the simplicity of installation and easy maintenance. It provides that visual and sensory experience which adds massive value.

Mix & match the door size samples to create the perfect combination in the gallery. The EGGER decorative collection has every option an architect or designer needs
18 NEWS

Lauren continues: “With the boards displayed in the middle of the table, people can compare the differences, especially when it comes to the woodgrains. Whether they are looking for a contemporary veneer effect or opting for something that comes very close to solid timber, balance is everything and they will always find something that works perfectly for their project.”

Designers are attracted to EGGER for their matching materials, which is one of its unique selling points. Having a selection of worktops, laminates, MFC (in varying

thicknesses) and edging available in the same decor is appealing to anyone looking to create a high-end look on a budget.

Lauren says: “There are endless options to pick from around the room. Glosses that outshine anything on the market, edging with accents that refreshingly highlight and complement the board, over 250 colourful laminates and we have not even touched upon the popular painted timber effects that are in fashion. Everything on display is available on next day delivery which allows ease in their decision.”

“Once boards have been selected, it is time for designers to lockdown their choices. They scan the decors which then appear on a huge 65-inch TV screen within EGGER’s high-tech App. These can be placed in a digital mood board alongside other inspiration and photos. This allows them to take their experience away with them to helpfully inform their clients. A4 samples are also available to take away, it is a perfect balance between digital and reality.”

“The opportunity to work with EGGER on this exciting collaboration, and have the full

decorative collection on display was a must. To have a showroom which provides instant access to big samples, showing how EGGER products look, feel, change, contrast and combine with others, is beneficial to our customers.

Local designers and architects have already taken full advantage. In addition, local joiners are now booking the space, bringing their customers down to plan out their kitchens or bedrooms.”

Dean Carroll, head of procurement, says: “There are businesses, like EGGER, in this world that stand out, they thrive in a way no others do.

EGGER’s pace in terms of innovation has been monumental, a constant leader in design with a clear focus on meeting the customers’ needs. The dramatic impact of the EGGER Decorative Collection has revolutionised the interior design world. We are so happy to be part of it with a display of our own to share and inspire.”

Xylexpo in Milan – delivering new event concept for visitors

The 27th edition of Xylexpo, the biennial exhibition of woodworking technology and components for the furniture industry, will take place in the next few days at the impressive Rho-Fieramilano facility to the west of the city itself. But visitors will notice something different this time around.

For this first time this year, Xylexpo will be joined by Bi-MU, an event organised by UcimuSistemi per produrre – the association of Italian manufacturers of machine tools, robots and automation. The fully integrated events, which kick off on Wednesday 12th October running through until Saturday 15th will present a unique opportunity for European and UK-based

furniture and joinery manufactures to assess what’s current and new in terms of machinery and equipment, materials and components at Xylexpo, whilst exploring what’s happening in the parallel area of machine tools, robots and automation.

“We are living in a period of great transformation where it is necessary to be a bit more daring and strive to make new choices,” added Dario Corbetta, director of Xylexpo. “The up-coming exhibition highlights the will of the entire wood and derivative technology protagonists to experience a new way to come together, seizing all the opportunities of a new age where production processes are becoming

increasingly transversal and the search for solutions can be extended into neighbouring worlds. This also applies to digital printing, currently an ever increasing trend in furniture and surface finishings.”

Xylexpo will play out across halls 22-24; 14-18, and visitors will have countless opportunities to explore suppliers that are both well-known to them and those also yet to be-discovered to them.

The BI-MU event is occupying resides in halls 9-11 and 13-15, and the organiser, and the BI-MU organiser says it is expecting more than 100,000 visitors to make a Milanese pilgrimage this year!

SCM celebrates 70 years of innovation for the woodworking industry at Xylexpo

SCM is once again taking centre stage at the latest edition of Xylexpo 2022, due to be held from 12-5th October in conjunction with the engineering event Bi.Mu. at Milan-Rho showrounds on the outskirts of Milan.

The trade fair will be a special opportunity for the world-famous Group from Rimini to celebrate its 70th anniversary with customers, dealers and partners. SCM’s first woodworking machine, L’invincibile dates back to 1952 and from there, the beginning of a long history of international successes that continue to this day, with 750

million Euro in turnover, over 4000 employees and a globally unique range of products and services to meet all the production demands for wood machining.

With an innovative, multimedia stand of over 2000m2 in Pavilion 22, the Group will present its vision of the digital, connected and integrated factory, designed to accompany all the businesses and fields of application in the sector: from artisans to large industries; from furniture to windows and doors and from woodworking to timber construction.

Integration will be one of the key concepts that will drive the experience of visitors at SCM’s stand. The Smart&Human Factory model already successfully applied by global manufacturing leaders, will present different innovations aimed at making customer processes even more efficient and sustainable and will be re-proposed in two specific versions for industry and artisan.

In both cases, SCM will propose integrated automated flexible cell systems that are modular and easily reconfigurable, capable of meeting all the Industry 4.0’s demands.

24 XYLEXPO PREVIEW

Cells that combine the advantages of SCM technologies in terms of solidity, efficiency and reliability, with world class manufacturing digital products and services: MES systems to manage and control production; line and cell supervisory software to monitor the state of each of the products being machined throughout the entire process; IoT systems and apps to gather and analyse data from machines, for complete control and implementation of intelligent and prognostic maintenance models. Without forgetting the robotic and automation systems integrated into the machines, these too are flexible and modular, for use in large industries.

Also integrated is the digital transformation vision that visitors at Xylexpo will have a chance to see for themselves in the SCM Digital Integrated Woodworking Process. Here,

technologies, software and services integrate at each of the stages – preparation of data, planning, production, monitoring and assistance – to increase productivity and connect the entire process from the office to the factory.

There are a lot of new entries in process software, at different stages of woodworking.

Considerable interest is also expected for easyFlow, SCM’s new MES plug&play that is simple, scalable and available even to artisan businesses, and Thundercut, the cutting optimiser-sequencer that brings the potentials of a circular saw closer to the most powerful industrial panel saws.

In the same area, there will be the opportunity to get a more in-depth explanation from SCM’s experts on the increasingly customer-centred digital services that support the customer from pre to after sales: the new MySCM portal that grants access to a vast range of technical support services anytime, anywhere, even via smartphone; the new integrated E-shop for the on-line sale of machines, spare parts, software and services; the IoT Maestro connect platform perfectly integrated to the ‘Woodworking made Izy’ project that sees the most important machinery manufacturers committed to offering a common language for their technologies, as part of a complete integration of the customer’s machines.

Complete door finishing line from Venjakob

Environmentally friendly and resource-saving coating coupled with a productivity increase requires the use of new or an intelligent combination of patented technologies and processes. For the door manufacturer Garant, Venjakob – as the general contractor – has created a door coating system that relies on a new circulating air process with state-of-theart spraying technologies.

In 2021, the Garant plant in Amt Wachsenburg in the state of Thuringia, Germany produced around 800,000 doors and 700,000 frames to supply wholesalers and specialist shops. In the future, there should be even more. For this purpose, a new automated production line spraying robot with state-of-the-art technologies for energy-efficient production was commissioned.

The aim is to increase productivity to safeguard capacity until 2030 without compromising on quality. Since Venjakob, as a well-known manufacturer for surface finishing in the furniture industry, had already successfully integrated a robot cell into an existing painting line for Garant in 2020, the company was also approached for this complex project.

Circulating air mode in itself is nothing new

Operating a door finishing system in circulating air mode is nothing new for Venjakob. After all, the use of circulating air can save a lot of heating energy. However, this would be eminently required if the fresh air entering from outside were to be brought to the temperature required for the painting process. “In addition, when using water-based coating materials, as Garant does, the circulating air flow would have had to be cooled, as it continues to heat up, which is not ideal for the coating process. This cooling would have consumed additional energy,” explains Christian Streit, Vice President of the wood and building material plants division at Venjakob. The solution now lies in the combination between circulating air technology and a special air treatment system for air moistening.

“With the moistening system, we use evaporation cooling and cool the air flow, so to speak, while simultaneously provided additional moisture. By using this combined process of modern circulating air technology and innovative air treatment technology from a partner company specialising in this area, enormous energy savings are achieved,” emphasises Christian

In addition to the spray booth, the combined circulating air system was also designed to provide moistened air to the 10-level dryer. “This allows us to dispense with a separate water circuit for moistening in order to achieve the desired surface quality,” says Dirk Wöllner, Plant Manager at Garant.

Saving additional resources However, the system does not just reduce heating energy and CO2 emissions. “Pollutant levels in waste-water also approach zero. The water discharged from the air treatment system only contains clay particles, no more pollutants,” explains Thomas Heinze, the project

engineer in charge at Garant. The water-based

UV coating material is applied using automatic AirCoat spray guns from surface specialist Wagner. A total of six guns are used: four guns for the faces and vertical edges and two additional guns for the top and bottom edges. The guns are lightweight and compact, and the special design of the air channels ensures fine atomisation and reduces overspray. In combination with the high humidity, the application efficiency is increased and less coating material is used. Filter consumption for cleaning is also reduced by 30% to 50%,” Christian points out.

Integrated material recovery system

Another technology for increasing sustainability is the integrated Venjakob material recovery system. It consists of a patented V-belt and allows the operating company to recover 90% of the overspray from the conveyor belt. “It’s pretty fast,” says Christian.

The system returns the recovered coating material to a central material container without significant losses due to material drying. The coating material can be reused directly without a decrease in quality. “This can reduce consumption of the coating material used by around 30% compared with other recovery systems,” emphasises Christian.

Quick colour change, easy cleaning

Four high-pressure double diaphragm pumps from Wagner are used for the paint supply. Each pump comes with a high-pressure filter and a wall bracket that allows the pump to be mounted horizontally. Compared to normal piston pumps, the special technology of Cobra pumps in combination with the small displacement ensures extremely low pulsation and a uniform material flow. These properties contribute to perfect coating results. Other advantages include fast color changes and easy cleaning.

Spray guns spares bar codes

Garant is very satisfied with the results. “The surface quality is excellent. As early as when the system was first commissioned, we already had better results than with the old system. And that was without any process adjustments or fine-tuning,” says Dirk.

Another crucial requirement was end-to-end recognition of the barcode attached at the foot of each door. This means that this barcode

had to be protected from paint mist to remain readable throughout the production process. So far, the barcode had been covered manually and the protective strip removed again later. With the new Venjakob system, there was a better solution: the spray guns could be adjusted so precisely that the barcode was spare during coating.

In conclusion, the new door coating system for Garant, in which doors are coated in throughfeed production, is designed – throughout the entire planning and implementation process – to protect the environment and save resources. Innovative processes and proven technologies can reduce the energy balance per unit produced. “In drying technology, the balance improves as production capacity increases. However, due to the total production at the factory, the system is not yet fully utilised,” says Dirk. Thus, as desired by Garant, there is still room for improvement ...

Rack clad building for Bauking Lorup –everything on track even with slopes

As part of a merger of two locations, Bauking reorganised the storage of its timber products at its Lorup site. In a new Ohra rack clad building built from cantilever racks, the customers of the building materials retailer can now find all timber goods centrally in one place.

The racking system also offers significantly more storage capacity, so that Bauking can also stock a larger number of different items. To drain the outdoor storage area safely, the floor slab on which the building stands has a slope of 0.7 per cent in two directions. Ohra compensated for the slope by fixing the cantilever arms in a narrow grid of holes and a special, flexible roof construction.

Distributed storage, limited capacities

Before the reorganisation of the storage area, the timber products in Lorup were stored in different areas of the site, some in the main building and some outside, unprotected from the weather. The length of the stored beams and battens was limited due to the storage space situation, and the storage capacities were almost exhausted.

More items protected from the weather in one place

To provide its customers with a better overview and faster access to the timber goods, Bauking decided to store all timber goods centrally at the site in the new rack clad building. A building of this type, in which the racking acts as a load-bearing structure for the roof and walls, is significantly more flexible and less expensive than a classic warehouse building. Bauking planned a building constructed from three rows of cantilever racks, each around 20 metres long. The cantilever racks, which are over 7.8 metres high, are equipped with up to seven storage levels.

Flexible roof construction

The runs of racking are aligned along a gradient direction. Since the cantilever arms of the Ohra racks are clipped in and Ohra uses a small arm pitch, the arms were able to easily compensate for the height difference of about 14 centimetres along the racking length. To compensate for the second slope in the transverse direction to the rows of racking in the roof construction, Ohra utilised a variably designed roof ridge. Here, the roof arms of the racks are not connected to each other, but there is a gap of about 10 centimetres between them. It is covered by a flexible ridge cap so that the inside of the unit remains dry. This ridge solution not only compensates for the difference in height between the rows of racking, but also guarantees that vibrations and stresses that arise, for example, during storage, are not transferred from one row of racking to the other. This protects the roof structure from damage.

Wider product range for customers

The new racking hall for timber goods enables significantly more efficient logistics processes at the Bauking site in Lorup. Customers can access a wider range of products; for example, items up to 13 metres long can now be stored without any problems. Due to the central storage of all timber goods in a cantilever racking system, customers receive the desired goods in a shorter time.

£1.2m investment in new machinery at J & J Ormerod

The Lancashire company wholly manufactures its products in bases across Ros-sendale, and has been using a Wemhöner press in the production department since 2001.

Production director Bob Myers said: “With prices rising, especially energy costs, we were aware that newer machinery would be more energy efficient and, unlike the older model that we had, would not keep the presses at an operating temperature all day long. As well as having a lower running cost, the newer presses have allowed us to increase production.”

The new Wemhöner 3D Variopress connects to an automated Sittex pressing and trimming line which has a laser temperature control to reduce energy consumption.

Bob said: “Just two weeks after it had been installed, we had increased productivity by 30 per cent –because the pressure we can achieve reduces the cycle time from three minutes to two so instead of 20 cycles an hour – we now do 27.”

Staff have welcomed the new equipment as the previous press involved a lot of manual handling, was not as precise to use and when the vinyl had been pressed, they had to manually

cut round the wood.

Production manager Darren Eatough said: “These new machines are a lot less la-bour intensive and they have an automated cutting system.

“The quality is better and the reliability of the machinery is a lot better. Staff want to produce quality products and this new machinery ensures that it happens. It has made life a lot easier for everyone.”

CNC Machinery & Equipment34

From small joinery workshops to large timber merchants, the Cube has built its success on its compact size, simple operation and exceptional level of flexibility.

Its iconic ‘plug and play’ concept has set the benchmark when it comes to quick and easy operation – simply set-up, switch on and start planning – and its standard working height of 8-160mm, working width of 15-260mm and feed speed of 6-12m/min allow workpieces to be planed perfectly on four sides in a single pass.

So, what’s new on the Cube 3?

Not only is the stock price of the Cube 3 lower than its predecessor, with finance available from as little as £136 per week*, the latest model can be specified with an automated stacker and RFC 15 return conveyor. This simplifies handling and ensures easy one-man operation, regardless of the workpiece size, while streamlining the flow of production.

The competitive price of the RFC 15 return feed system means that companies can realistically see a payback on their investment in less than one year but, if you’re not ready to

make the investment now, you can retrofit these items at a later date if your Cube 3 is equipped with a ‘prepare package’ at the time of its build.

Made from a hardy combination of cast iron and DUROCEM, the Cube 3 is ten times faster than conventional machines and has a total connected load of 18kW as standard. It’s also equipped with Weinig EasyLock tools, allowing the quick change of reversible knives inside

the machine. If you are looking to process workpieces with large chip removal, work at a higher feed speed or plane hardwood, it’s no problem for the Cube 3. You can simply increase the connected load to 28kW. A mobile spindle is also available if you’re wanting to consecutively machine workpieces, making the automatic planer a robust and cost-effective solution for any business.

Revolutionary InfoTEC EVO GO CNC nesting centre from CIBOR Woodworking Machinery

Uncertain times need wise investments –increasing the efficiency of the production process with lower costs and a certain ROI is a clever idea.

InfoTEC EVO GO introduces what it describes as a revolution in the production of custommade furniture. The ground-breaking EVO GO has been designed to increase the efficiency and capabilities of the CNC nesting centre. This technologically advanced, multi-functional solution combines nesting with two-dimentional drilling of furniture panels in just one machine. Thanks to the specially designed vacuum cups that manoeuvre the workpiece, EVO GO performs fully automated operations, i.e. cutting furniture boards, and both vertical and horizontal drilling in one, uninterrupted processing cycle. All of this without the involvement of additional machines or people and without creating additional waste for the side drilling tool. The operator’s input is limited to loading the board and collecting ready-made panels. The other manual processes have been eliminated. Ready panels collected from the dispensing table are prepared for veneering and do not require additional processing.

Along with Infocam Cabinet software, this modern environment for designing cabinet furniture with an integrated optimisation module reduces the time of processing the full-size board to only 12 minutes. A great tool indeed to quickly execute the process, from the initial design and valuation to the implementation of a finished product.

HSL Chairs –sitting comfortably with Masterwood

HSL are a family run business, producing high quality furniture for over 50 years. With a head office and factory in Batley, West Yorkshire, just around the corner from where it all began, they now have over 500 employees. Their manufacturing process had been very traditional and labour intensive, using band saws and routers to machine the various parts needed for the frames of their renowned chairs.

The company decided to look at CNC and turned to Masterwood for solutions. After discussing their needs and seeing a machine

42 CNC MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT

being demonstrated, they ordered their first CNC, the MW1538M through-feed, which was installed in early 2016. When asked why HSL chose Masterwood to supply their CNC machine – manufacturing and design director Kevin Wall said: “We spoke to other companies, but we felt that with Masterwood we got more quality and strength.”

Within a year, HSL saw a dramatic change in their production, most importantly how much time could be saved, and so placed an order for a second machine.

With the possibilities that the new technology offered, they started to redesign their existing products, making the base and foundations the

same but requiring less variation in components.

Kevin said: “It enabled us to reduce the problems with our existing products. The internal frames were much improved, preventing the inaccuracies we’d previously experienced. We were able to use the CNC to router the pieces, giving us far better accuracy.

“It reduced our time and made assembly easier, resulting in a more productive workforce. We control the quality right from the start of the product, until it goes out the door. If the frame is right, we have the accuracy all the way through the factory. We’ve decreased the number of parts we have to rework or adjust, saving us time. We would not have been able to grow like this without the CNCs.”

As production and demand continued to increase for HSL, a third CNC was added in December 2018, then a fourth in June 2021, another MW1538M. Machine operator, Rob, said: “Not only has it increased the output we are getting from the machines, but it’s increased the production through the factory and the final products we can get out the door as were the first point of production.

“We work more efficiently, we get as much as we can out of a sheet, we are going green, we want to not only as efficient as we can but as good for the plant as we can. Its pointless buying responsibly sourced timber if we’re throwing half the sheet into a skip.

“We get much more out of a sheet than we would previously, with smaller parts out of offcuts and parts that would be too small for someone to safely work on traditional machines. We have two of us that run the four Masterwood CNC machines, we’ve got it timed so while one is cutting one is being unloaded, there’s very little standing about.

“The machines are our main work horses, we couldn’t get the quality that we’ve got now without them. At the start with the one machine, we only needed that amount of capacity, but as we progressed and we learnt how we could get quicker and more production out of the machine.”

The STB-Flex combines the benefits of the Universal five-axis CNC router, with the thrufeed, self-setting automatic table. The result is a compact Industry 4.0 manufacturing cell,

connected directly to the user’s network for planning, processing and producing orders rapidly.

The Flex minimises reliance on labour, and reduces costs without compromising quality or reliability.

The complete line is unashamedly heavy-duty, incorporating the highest quality components, to provide a system design not to fail, and built for life. As such, the Maka will provide users with manufacturing resilience long-term.

The FLEX can machine all five sides, and internally. Productivity is achieved by a variety of novel innovations, most notably Maka’s autoclamping through-feed table.

Doors enter the machining area where the locks, hinges, profiles and grooves can all be machined externally, but also windows and offcuts can be machined inside the door too. Normally the presence of any offcut prevents this, but with the FLEX, offcuts are lowered, and frames raised, separating apertures and frames so they can be machined independently. Offcuts are separated and removed too. Even more novel, the transport works at different levels

Combining five-axis profiling with throughfeed edge processing, Maka’s STB-FLEX delivers ultimate flexibility, with non-stop high-volume through-feed door production

(below the line), saving time and space.

Maka’s powerful and fast five-axis head undertakes each process efficiently with minimal non-productive time. Not only are tool change times short, multiple aggregates are employed to eliminate tool changes entirely. The line can be fed manually, or automatically wholly unmanned.

Depending on the operations required, the STBFLEX can instantly process each door efficiently one after the next, thus maximising productivity. The risk of setting errors is also eliminated, thus guaranteeing consistent quality manufacturing.

Joint managing director, Iain Young, states: “Maka’s philosophy is to provide high-quality, robust and reliable manufacturing systems, built for life. The whole team is dedicated to supplying enhanced solutions for specific applications. The STB-FLEX is a uniquely efficient and productive Industry 4.0 manufacturing cell designed to meet the most demanding challenges facing door manufacturers today. Thereby the FLEX offers a future-proof investment for the commercial door manufacturer.”

Biesse makes breakthrough in CNC set-up times with new XPS technology

According to Biesse, they are the first in the market to launch a set-up system that can execute configuration of an entire pod and rail bed in a maximum of three seconds. By delivering a sea change in set-up efficiency, the XPS has the potential to transform the productivity of joinery and furniture manufacturing workflows.

For the majority of furniture and joinery manufacturers, small batches and JIT production have become the norm. This can mean that operators are spending more time setting up machines than running them. In order to maximise productivity, it has become more important than ever for manufacturers to minimise the time it takes for their CNC machines to change from one job to the next. This is particularly true on a pod and rail machines, as setting up the pods/clamps and support rails correctly can be very timeconsuming.

Fortunately, on today’s CNCs and pod and rail machines, varying degrees of assistance and automation can be applied to table set-up, accelerating the repositioning of the pods and rails and minimising the possibility of setting errors.

Automating set-up

Biesse offers four systems for reducing set-up time on its Rover CNC pod and rail machines. These range from a simple tool called Set-up Assistant, which assists with manual positioning, to its highly sophisticated XPS system, which completely automates the positioning of pods and rails to achieve unprecedented set-up speeds.

The Electronic Positioning System automatically configures the entire working area without operator intervention in as little as 30 seconds

Set-up assistant

Biesse’s most basic tool for facilitating table set-up, Set-up Assistant, acts as a guide for the operator when manually setting up the table.

It tells the user where to position the pods and uses a traffic light system to indicate whether or not the pods are in the correct position – only when all pods are showing green lights will the machine begin its programme.

This tool increases table set-up time by on average 20% versus a completely manual process, but more importantly, it eliminates the risk of the CNC colliding with out-of-position pods and causing costly damage.

Electronic Positioning System

The EPS (Electronic Positioning System) is Biesse’s entry level automated set-up system. This will automatically configure the entire working area without operator intervention in as little as 30 seconds. The limitation of the EPS versus more sophisticated systems is that it can’t sense when a pod has been moved manually.

When the machine is first turned on it performs a homing cycle to find the zero reference point. If an operator then moves a pod manually, the pods and rails lose their reference and the machine has to repeat this homing cycle.

Feedback Positioning System

Until the launch of the XPS, the FPS was the industry’s leading system for automated table configuration. Thanks to the use of magnetic sensors, the machine knows the exact position of each pod at any given time.

These sensors work by providing position feedback to the machine’s control system. This means that if the operator moves a pod or rail,

the machine does not have to go through a homing cycle, making it a quicker positioning system than the EPS. The entire working area can be configured in just 20 seconds with FPS.

On the FPS, the pods are moved via guides - with one set of guides per rail. This means the pods are moved into position one at a time rather than simultaneously. The rails themselves have individual motors, allowing them to move into place simultaneously.

Extreme Positioning System

The ultimate automated table configuration tool, the XPS (Extreme Positioning System), takes just three seconds to set up an entire table. The key to this breakthrough is that every pod has its own motor with rack and pinion.

This enables the pods to move simultaneously and independently, as they are not sharing a drive with the other pods on the same rail as on the FPS and EPS systems. With XPS, the carriage moves at speeds of up to 23m/min on the x-axis and 32m/min on the y-axis and pod placement accuracy is within +/-0.15mm.

Self-learning functionality

Both FPS and XPS have an in-built ‘self learning’ function. This comes into play when an operator is not sure what size a panel is until it is placed on the table and cannot, therefore, call up an existing programme. It is also useful when machining an intricate part that requires a jig.

In these scenarios, the operator can position the pods manually and those coordinates will then be saved within the machine’s software. So, the next time that the same workpiece or task is required, the saved configuration can be recalled and automatically position the pods accordingly.

Dust Extraction & Woodwaste Management

Will it be a long cold winter of discontent, or will you use your wood-waste to keep warm this winter?

Many potential customers are unaware as to what is needed to install a wood fired heating system. They are also unaware as to how little wood-waste is needed to effectively heat a factory.

In general, within the woodworking industry, the heat load is divided into three main factors. The obvious one is transmission losses through the fabric of the building this is heat lost through the roof walls and floor of the factory unit itself.

Modern buildings have low transmission losses older buildings were not so well insulated. The second form of heat load is infiltration losses. In simple terms how many doors are

left open all day for loading finished goods for delivery or receiving materials from suppliers. This is normally referred to as ‘air changes’.

The third, and very relevant heat loss in the woodworking industry, is extraction losses –these are from the dust extraction system and spray booths.

Some dust extraction companies supply dust extraction filters with return air to the building. Extraction losses from spray facilities cannot be returned.

So how much energy does a factory use? As a rule of thumb, a 20,000ft2 factory will need 300kW, a 10,000ft2 factory, 150 kW.

It is generally predicted by OFGEM that the energy used per heating season is the power of the heater in kW multiplied by 1314.

So, 150 kW heater 150 x 1314 = 197,100 kW hours or around 61 tonnes per heating season. If we take the heating season to be 32 weeks, this needs 1.9 tonnes per week. Equivalent gas usage at 25p per kW hour would be £49,275 per year.

If we do the same calculation with a 300kW heater and a 20,000ft2 factory 122 tonnes per year replaces a gas bill of almost £100,000. and during the heating season needs 3.8 tonnes per week.

If we take an example of a site with dust extraction and off-cuts available filling a 12m3 skip every month with extracted material and producing a 12m3 skip of off-cuts per week.

If we assume that the density of the extracted material is 500kg per m3 and the offcuts is 250kg per m3. Then this site would have 1.5 tonnes per week of extracted material and 1.5 tonnes of off-cuts. If the off cuts are granulated, then they can be mixed with the extracted material and the site has three tonnes per week available as fuel all of the year round.

With a small amount of storage of the off cuts in the summer the site could be self-sufficient in heating. During the summer months the waste produced can be efficiently burned and the heat produced released to atmosphere.

If we consider a woodworking factory with a spray facility heating to the spray room is still required even in summer but at a much lower rate. In winter the extraction losses are often more than the transmission losses.

The design of the heating system can effectively reduce the energy needed to heat a factory if we can cut down on heat lost from the building. An example of this would be an air curtain over each loading door. The use of high-level unit heaters these take the hottest air and heat it and blow it down to floor level so as well as acting as heaters they act as heat recovery units.

Unit heaters and door curtains can be thermostatically controlled, or the door

curtains can switch on when the door is raised, automatically.

High level unit heaters can be controlled in zones allowing storage areas to be held at lower temperatures than work areas.

Pragmatic environmental compliance solutions for producers of waste wood

Those within the furniture manufacturing industry will be aware of the importance regarding compliance to various regulations, from having the relevant permit or exemptions to process wood, to using waste wood as a fuel to produce energy. There are also a number of other requirements to ensure practices are sustainable and in line with Government legislation.

ECS (Environmental Compliance Solutions) a consultancy business, based in Staffordshire, offer nationwide services dedicated to companies involved in the manufacture of woodbased products. They are also experts regarding the use of waste wood or biomass for heating, along with ensuring compliance to the nondomestic renewable heat incentive.

Biomass boiler and waste wood to energy installations that have been accredited to the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (NDRHI) continue to have potential to make a vital contribution towards the UK’s obligations for renewable energy production and carbon emission reduction. To ensure that this can be achieved, on-going compliance to the NDRHI and local environmental permitting requirements must be met. Those who are not participants

of the NDRHI scheme or want to upgrade their current technology, may want to explore acquiring RHI Tariffs during this pivotal time.

The NDRHI scheme can be a confusing area to navigate where there are continual updates to regulations, whether it is to improve the sustainability of fuel sources or the need to ensure that applicants have genuine carbon reduction projects. ECS are best placed to help with decades of experience in the deployment of biomass and waste wood projects from conception to post completion. Director and founder of ECS, Amy Fielding, has collaborated with a wide range of Government Agencies to help develop both national and international markets. She is currently part of the Renewable Energy Association (REA) Wood Heat Forum Steering group committee and the Hetas/ Woodsure (BSL) Fuel Quality and Waste Advisory Panel. This means that she is kept abreast of any changes in RHI and Environmental policy, along with any new incentives that are on the horizon. ECS have also recently welcomed to the team a master’s graduate in Environmental Law. They can offer ongoing support subscriptions or one-off compliance works. As part of the subscription service they will help to ensure that

your company are maintaining and providing all the correct record keeping which is required as part of meeting ongoing obligations, both from an RHI perspective and Environmental compliance point of view. They also work with a highly regarded global UKAS accredited fuels analysis company, Alfred H Knight, so can offer mutually complimentary materials, composition and fuels analysis.

Bespoke and one-off works can include Hetas Accreditations, Clean Air Act Exemptions and Testing, RHI Emissions Certificate Drafting, Part B/Medium Combustion Directive Permit Applications, Environmental Management Systems implementation, Lawful Development Certificate Application Support, along with NDRHI ongoing obligation and NDRHI Tariff Trading Guidance.

They adopt a pragmatic approach and are always on hand to answer any queries you may have. The aim being to take the pressure off and allow companies to focus on the day to day operation of their businesses.

REDUCE COSTS

In many manufacturing facilities, extraction fans operate continuously, at full power, throughout the working day.

Even when some machines are not in use, and often during factory breaks, the powerful, energy-consuming fans continue to run at full speed – wasting valuable energy... and money!

With ECOGATE, the extraction system responds in real-time to variations in machine use. When a production machine is switched on, the greenBOX Controller opens a motorised damper to provide extraction for that particular machine.

With ECOGATE technology installed, an extraction fan will consume the minimum power required to provide optimum extraction – reducing electricity bills by 68% on average.

The Kreft recently designed and made all the wooden fittings for a new shop at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall – Europe’s largest garden restoration project with more than 200 acres of gardens and grounds.

Dust extraction specialist Wood Waste Control (Engineering) Ltd has installed one of its extraction systems in a workshop which has attracted recent royal interest.

The then HRH Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall visited the Newquay Community Orchard in his role as landlord of the Duchy of Cornwall estate.

The Newquay Community Orchard is a community space in the centre of Newquay, created and cared for by over 800 volunteers, and sitting on seven acres of Duchy land. It has a traditional orchard, a community grow space, a forest garden, a wood workshop, performance spaces, co-workspaces, classrooms and a community cafe.

The wood workshop is part of the Orchard project’s Kreft - Cornish for craft - community maker space. Co-ordinator Jack Lindsey said: “Kreft includes an educational hand tool facility, a fully equipped wood workshop including a CNC router and floor standing equipment, and a technical studio space, housing a laser cutter and 3D printers.

“Two days each week it is used for educational purposes, teaching groups of up to eight volunteers basic wood repair and construction

When the Kreft workshop was created earlier this year Wood Waste Control was selected to design, construct and install its dust extraction system. The company is one of the UK’s leading dust extraction and heating equipment specialists for the woodworking industry, and specified a four-bin fine dust extractor filter with 11kW highefficiency extractor fan and ducting to all relevant machines.

“The collected waste is currently discharged into dumpy bags and used for compost across the Newquay Community Orchard site. Jack Lindsey said: “We are getting FSC qualified and have a briquetter machine on order, and aim to sell the briquettes locally.”

He added: “The Wood Waste Control extraction system is great – it does the job perfectly.”

Wood Waste Control is based in Bourne End near High Wycombe and has hundreds of successful waste extraction, processing and heating equipment installations across the UK, in Europe, Russia and Africa.

The family company manufactures its wide range of filters in the UK and supplies shredders, briquette presses, biomass heaters/boilers, plus quick-assemble and spiral ductwork to enable it to offer solutions from simple stand-alone bagging units through to complex integrated systems.

Beat the energy crisis

With gas and electricity prices going up, it is now time to covert your wood waste into energy that could heat your workshop.

Rather than sending your wood waste to landfill, a very efficient way to deal with this waste is to use it to save money on your heating.

IWM MD Ian Brown says: “Our range of 6 Briquette machines produce between 20100kgs/hr offer an environment-friendly way to produce renewable briquettes.Costing less that 30p/hr to run, they can reduce your dust by as much as 80% in volume. Making briquettes from it can then be used in wood heaters to heat your workshop, effectively giving you free heat, or be sold to customers to burn on their log burners.

“Our machines take up very little floor space and can be supplied freestanding allowing dust to be fed directly into the hopper,” says Ian, “alternately they can be sited under the extraction system making emptying dust bags a

thing of the pasted. Designed to run all day installation is simple, just plug and play.

“The machines can be fitted with a five bag carousel unit that automatically bags the briquettes evenly into each bag or box, unto 20/25kgs depending on material.”

IWM has 50 years of experience in this field with over 550 machines sold throughout the UK and Ireland. IWM encourages customers to send their woodwaste or visit IWM’s demonstration area in Newark, alternatively the company is happy to arrange workshop visits and site surveys.

Adhesives

British Adhesives –bonding Britain together

British Adhesives (Brit-Ad) is a family run business which set up in late 2019 by Anthony Rook (Tony) and his wife, Sally. The Lincolnshire based company has gained significant market traction over the last two years with its business supplying adhesives, machinery and spare parts to the woodworking and furniture industry, as well as the UPVC market. Furniture & Joinery Production caught up with managing director Tony Rook to discuss how… the business was faring.

Having gained 30 years’ experience in the adhesvies industry, two-thirds of which were spent working for a large global adhesive company as northern european sales manager, Tony has direct and valuable experience of working with multi-national furniture, panel and door manufacturers such as Ikea, Jeldwen, Resopal, Beauflor and others. This rich insight imbues Britad with a direct understanding of, and respect for, the challenges and opportunities within the British adhesives marketplace.

At the moment, Brit-Ad supplies a wide range of adhesives, machinery, equipment and spares representing WPR/TAKA for machinery and speciality reactive hot melt primers and cleaners, Unicol for EVA hot melts, Chemfix for brick bonding adhesives, Selena for M S Polymer and Silicones, and Gard Chemicals for speciality cleaners.

Among the company’s key target audiences –kitchen, bedroom and furniture industry and the profile wrapping and flat lamination industries – Tony says his business typically supplies this sector with reactive hot melt poducts. On the other hand, he says that Brit-Ad can source anything the customer requests and will spend time doing so, nothing is too obscure or too much bother. “We love to spend time with our customers, and we guarantee to give them the personal touch – we are in the service and solutions business so we keep in touch with all our customers on a weekly basis,” says Tony.

The business was set up just a few months

before the pandemic started in March 2020, so they feel at home in what is a challenging environment, but Tony, pictured above, acknolweldges that his business might not have survived without the commitment and proactivity of his fantastic suppliers.

“Great suppliers are the key to any successful business, as is a solid personal relationship and home life. Other than the first lockdown, we have visited our customers and traded as normal, obviously making sure all approprate PPE regulations were respected. We had to adapt

62

and really be a focused and entrepreneurial company … the products we sell now are not the products we expected to sell!

“During the start of the pandemic we actually sourced hand sanitisers as a service to the community and just to tick over the turnover. We probably didn’t make any money after delivery but it kept us busy, and of course we could promote our business and our brand. Since then our business has flourished and to date every month has been a record turnover, so much so that we have had to rent another warehouse!

“Our larger deliveries are handled by a local transport company where they store the bulk adhesives and deliver direct to our customers, we also arrange deliveries for customers directly from TAKA when extra large volumes are required.”

Looking at how the market has influenced the development of the business, Tony’s view is clear and concise. “Our biggest influences are first of all our customers, and also our peers, whose standing we resepct, look up to and aspire to be some day – whilst being a confident and individual company with our own initiatives and beliefs.”

This self-wareness adn quiet confidence is evidenced by the the way the company sets out its simple yet effective customer-focused agenda. “Companies using Brit-Ad can relax knowing we are doing some of the work for them, keeping large stocks of adhesives and spare parts to offer exceptional service (48 hour) taking the stress away from ordering – we are

big enough to matter but small enough to care!

“For instance, when there was the raw materials crisis in June 2021 we had stock, and customers who normally purchased directly from large multi-national adhesive manufacturers called us and we set up supply to them inside one week. Once a company has dealt with Brit-Ad they see the benefits for themselves,” says Tony.

Regarding the current trading climate, Tony says he feels Brit-Ad it is well set up to help furniture and joinery manufacturers: “We have stock in a local warehouse, with competitive

pricing, and a personal touch with fast and free delivery service. We have a ‘nothing is too much’ attitude, we are 100% customer focused. We acknoledge that the cost of living crisis is a problem, but for us, because our overheads are low, we are sure that our customers will not be greatly effected by the current situation. In fact, our customers have in general been fantastic in understanding the issues and our needs when we have had to discuss pricing discrepancies, says Tony.

Looking ahead, what does Tony see for 2023? “Our plans for the remainder of 2022 are to employ another driver and to have a warehouse operative/picker. Let’s see where we are at in 2023, but I would like to have several vans actively collecting and delivering spare parts, as well as delivering our core adhesive products. “Thanks to all our loyal customers and a special thank you to our amazing suppliers, let’s hope we can continue growing together for the rest of 2022 and beyond.”

ADHESIVES 63

Easy steps towards longlasting lamination results

During the lamination of wood-based profiles and panels, users often facing a difficult choice of the correct product but also with the choice of the correct application parameters for the adhesives to obtain the best performance and quality of the final product.

How can we find the right application parameters and how can we make sure that the result will be a long-lasting lamination result? We spoke with experts from WPR-Taka and Anthony Rook from Brit-Ad to find an easy way to improve the quality of laminated products.

One of the biggest issues during the foiling of profiles and panels with hot melt adhesives, and especially HMPUR (Hot Melt Polyurethane Reactive) applied by a slot nozzle glue head, is to find out if the lamination has been perfectly successful. Sometimes the decorative foil seems to be correctly applied but will come up or even come off after a certain time.

An easy way to evaluate the bonding is to do a peel test immediately after lamination and after the cross-linking of the HMPUR glue. The amount of wooden material that remains on the decorative material after peeling gives an exact

indication of the quality of the bonding and tells us how durable our glued joint will be over time. The more material is extracted, the better the results.

The most important parameter of the lamination process that should be constantly under control is the temperature of the panel and the glue line right before the application of the decorative material on the panel. The temperature in this specific point has an influence on the open time of the adhesive. Increasing the temperature of the substrate (profile or panel) increases the wettability (lengthening of the open time) of the adhesive at the moment of the first contact. This reduces the risk of a thermal shock, which would have a bad impact on the longevity of the product.

Especially when using an adhesive with a short setting time and high initial tack, which usually comes along with a shorter open time, we can simply increase the temperature of the panel to obtain a better adhesion and therefore a major extraction of wood particles during the peel test. The figure below shows the results of the peel test of two TAKA PUR adhesives applied under different conditions.

The first adhesive, TAKA 2308.38P, has a

medium long open time and a medium long setting time, while the second one, TAKA 2308.45P, features a medium open time but high initial tack, which is necessary to work with rigid decorative materials like thick CPL. The pictures of the extracted particles prove that by simply increasing the temperature of the panel by 10°C at the point of application on the foil, the results improve significantly.

So, it is worth checking the temperature and if necessary, increasing the number of air heaters or IR lamps to preheat the panel correctly before lamination. With an easy peel test we can determine the quality and longevity of our foiled product and adapt the process in order to obtain the best possible results.

For more advice on lamination, send an email to our Academy for more information: academy@taka.it or please contact Anthony Rook from Brit-Ad, 07484 341294

“They belong in every workshop!” - is what the Ostermann experts conclude about the numerous Redocol products. After all, the carpenters and cabinet makers of Ostermann’s in-house production use the popular products themselves on a daily basis.

The range includes adhesives, cleaners and tools for edge processing. Furniture makers will find detailed information on all products under the search item “#Redocol” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.

Quality adhesives

The Redocol brand includes various white glues, special adhesives, and wood veneer glues, as well as EVA and PUR hotmelt adhesives.

The Ostermann experts specially recommend their customers the latter, because you can use it to achieve particularly thin joints that are also more resistant to water and heat.

An ideal solution – especially in kitchens, where exposed areas such as near the stove or above the dishwasher are always subject to higher temperatures and a lot of moisture.

In the case of Redocol greenline adhesives, emphasis was also placed on environmentally compatible composition and application. Here, the experts recommend the white glue Redocol greenline Kantol. The solvent-free glue was specially developed for manual bonding of ABS and PVC edgings and is characterised by high initial tack and a very short setting time.

Effective cleaners

When it comes to cleaners, furniture makers will equally find the right solution from Redocol. If you are looking for an environmentally friendly and sustainable cleaner for all applications in the workshop, Redocol greenline Teclinex One For All is the perfect choice.

The surface and machine cleaner is based on bioalcohol and dermatologically tested. It can be used both on the units of the edgebanding machine and as a manual surface cleaner. Little known benefit: the product is perfect for cleaning machine parts like transport tracks or polyurethane rollers.

The versatile applications possible reduce the numbers of hazardous cleaners in the workshop. Storage space for dangerous goods can be minimised and storage cost reduced. At the construction site, you can best clean your finished workpiece with the biodegradable Redocol greenline finish cleaner 61.

It is suitable for almost all kinds of surfacesglass, plastic, lacquer, linoleum, and metal. To clean the edgebanding machine after the use of PUR adhesive, take the Redocol PUR cleaner.

Tools for edge processing

Selected tools for edge processing complete the Redocol range. The hand scraper, edging clamps, a scraper for radius, a sisal brush and the protective film remover are examples for small tools that will help you to noticeably optimise the handling of edgings in the workshop.

While the edging clamp neatly holds together started edging rolls, the applied edgings can be finished with the scrapers and the sisal brush. If the edgings are provided with protective films, the film remover from Redocol provides assistance in removing them.

Häfele’s handle range designed to set kitchens apart

The finishing touches of a kitchen project should be as much of a priority as the layout, fittings and appliances. While the space develops, moving from concept to reality, it’s important to demonstrate how smaller details – like different handle designs – can complete the look and truly set off the finished aesthetic.

Manufacturing and sourcing an impressive range of top quality handles and knobs, Häfele has curated a wide selection to suit a broad spectrum of kitchen styles, whether modern, vintage or traditional. It works with suppliers across the globe to provide the most comprehensive handle portfolio on the market, enabling kitchen and furniture manufacturers and installers the opportunity to provide the perfect finishing touches to their customers’ spaces.

As well as its own-brand handle range, which includes furniture handles in different shapes, colours, materials and surfaces to suit every style and taste, Häfele has forged a series of exclusive partnerships with other manufacturers from around the world.

Products recently added to the collection include ‘Land’, a vintage-inspired handle with a rounded finish structured in the form of a saucepan allowing for a perfect grip; ‘Graf’, a mixture of handles and knobs available in various sizes and finishes to create an infinite number of combinations on kitchen cupboards; and ‘Este’, which has a simple, minimalist design offering maximum versatility.

Häfele also caters for designers and homeowners seeking contemporary styles with its Gola profiles, which facilitate handle-free cupboard doors. Gola profiles can be teamed with Häfele to Order, a service where customers can order from a range of products that are cut, packaged, labelled and delivered to their exact requirements, to minimise waste in the fitting process.

To make life even easier for manufacturers and installers working on kitchen projects, Häfele has created a series of perfectly paired handles and cabinet doors from its Aspekt range.

Rail handles in a brushed black finish can be teamed with a smooth, classic Skye door, for example, to create an industrial look. Or,

customers can mix a metallic handle with a matt door finish for a contemporary design. Furthermore, the traditional shaker styling of the York door can also be dialled up or down by pairing different handle combinations; a cup handle in polished nickel, for example, gives an antique finish while a geometric bar design offers a bolder look.

The Aspekt door range and complementary handles are available within 2020 Fusion software to help with planning a kitchen, while Häfele’s Ideas for Living website and Kitchen Planner tool can be used to explore the handle collection – and the countless kitchen-styles that can be achieved by using them – in 3D.

Sometimes, the very best kitchen designs are inspired by the smallest of details. Häfele’s handle range is the perfect starting point for manufacturers and installers to create functional, great looking spaces for their customers, where the finishing touches actually become centre of attention.

Drawer systems for every home

Titus’ furniture hardware solutions have been improving homes around the world for decades. They increase the quality and facilitate assembly of furniture, giving a significant competitive advantage to manufacturers and improving the consumer experience. One of their most popular components is the Tekform family of drawers.

The Tekform family of double wall drawers are simple to mount and come with integrated soft closing with a lifelong eliable performance. Tekform Slimline drawers, the second generation of the double wall drawers, have sleek sides and increase the interior drawer space.

The Slimline double-wall drawer has now been upgraded with a new Tacto touch opening system for handleless drawer fronts - an ideal choice for kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes, living rooms.

Tekform Slimline Tacto drawers incorporate runners with an integrated Tacto activator that ensures effortless touch opening. All components remain the same as the standard version, as do drilling and fixing positions.

This makes it easy to update and enhance existing designs to offer convenient and reliable opening of drawers with handleless fronts. This makes the installation simple and precise, that is further supported by a non-handed Tacto mechanism that is intuitively placed into the correct position without the need of pre-drilling.

Drawers are fast and easy to assemble, thanks to the EasyFix locking system used for the front-panel connector, which requires only hand insertion and a quarter of a turn with a screwdriver to lock the panel securely in place. Reliable life-long ‘ConfidentClose’ soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned TITUS single-direction precision engineered hydraulic dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement of the drawer as it reaches the closed position but offer minimal resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened.

Installation of the drawers within the cabinet is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to ±1mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable.

Creating efficiencies of adhesive applications for furniture, joinery and panel manufacturers

Meler offers complete solutions for thermoplastic and reactive adhesive application in the furniture industry. Each installation is unique, but all manufacturers share common production challenges for which the know-how of Meler offers a solution.

Adhesive application technology in the wood industry allows significant improvements to be made with regard to moisture and temperature, and also improves the mechanical resistance of materials. However, attaining an installation for the efficient application of industrial adhesives is not always easy. Meler, a specialist in the

manufacture of complete bonding systems, highlights the key aspects for achieving profitability within this business.

Easy-clean technology to reduce maintenance costs

The production capacity of the work lines and the quality of the final product largely depend on good maintenance. It is vital to facilitate “in-situ” cleaning tasks through full accessibility to the interior of the machines, offering greater modularity in the design of components to guarantee usability and the autonomy of the line

operator. Meler easy-clean technology arises from the user experience to optimise daily work in a 100% safe environment.

Energy efficiency and care for the adhesive

The right technology allows the bonding temperature of the adhesives to be precisely controlled, as well as the necessary quantity for each application. We are talking about “on demand bonding”: a technology that guarantees minimal energy consumption, and which also keeps the adhesive in perfect conditions, avoiding costs associated with poor maintenance. The Meler range of fusers offers this functionality even in high production demand situations thanks to its non-stop design, which allows the adhesive to be reloaded without the need to stop production.

Specific solutions for each application

The needs of manufacturers depend on the characteristics of their production processes. While some opt to use more economical adhesives, such as EVA for bonding edges, others prefer to use PUR due to its resistance to water and heat.

In recent years, Meler has seen demand for closed systems with lamination applicators grow due to their advantages in terms of maintenance and cleaning. The market is evolving and the key lies in knowing how to assist clients in their production challenges, offering them a full range of specific solutions.

Further Investment In PCD Erosion

Further Investment In PCD Erosion

Over the past 24 months, we have seen a significant transition from AKE TCT Saw Blades to AKE PCD Saw Blades in certain industries. The main reason for this transition is the enormous benefit of service life/linear meterage. We are seeing a minimum increase of 20x linear meterage yield with PCD Saw Blades compared to the TCT equivalent. This is due to PCD tips being 50x harder (on average) than Carbide tips. With this increase, the end user achieves much higher productivity due to a reduction in downtime. They also achieve a reduction in cost throughout the Saw Blade service life.

Saw like a hot knife through butter – the new TS 60 K plunge-cut saw from Festool

The new TS 60 K plunge-cut saw cuts wood like a hot knife through butter and is safer and more versatile than ever before.

Once again, Festool is setting new standards for plunge-cut saws. Thanks to the unique KickbackStop technology, the new saw minimises the risk of injury, protects the workpiece and makes work safer.

Moreover, the greater cutting depth of 60mm (e.g. for fire protection doors or solid wood) enables an unrivalled range of applications. Floor layers will also be pleased because the new TS 60 K can be connected to cross cutting guide rails. The latest generation of brushless EC-TEC motor makes the new plunge-cut saw robust, powerful and compact.

Festool has been well-known for its circular saws for many decades. In the early 1960s, Festool brought the world’s first portable circular saw with a guide rail onto the market. It then launched the first circular saw in the early 1980s. The German manufacturer was always raising the bar for saws with its new models. Once more, Festool will be way ahead with the launch of the new TS 60 K in October 2022.

Greater safety when sawing – thanks to the KickbackStop

“Our best plunge-cut saw is now even safer because our unique KickbackStop not only protects the workpiece, it even minimises the risk of injury,” says Simon Illing, application engineer and master joiner. “Our new TS 60 K is highly precise, safer and delivers excellent results,” he continues. In the event of a kickback, the KickbackStop is triggered by the saw blade jamming during sawing or plunge-cutting into the workpiece and stops the saw blade faster than the blink of an eye. A particularly practical feature is that once the KickbackStop has been triggered, the saw is ready for use straight away without replacements or additional costs.

Truly versatile

With the TS 60 K, Festool has created its most versatile plunge-cut saw and its 60 mm cutting depth and compact design enable users to achieve outstanding results. It is even possible to saw mitre cuts of 45° in solid panels of up to 40 mm – and the guide rail can also be used.

“The entire accessory system around the TS 60 K only really demonstrates its versatility in day-to-day use. What’s particularly great is that the new plunge-cut saw can be combined with all cross cutting guide rails,” Simon adds.

This makes it incredibly easy to make reproducible, precise and clean cross cuts following marks. Once again, Festool has

considered many other details, such as easy saw blade changes, a splinter guard, an angle stop, a parallel side fence, precise depth adjustment with a double pointer and precision adjustment.

Robust and powerful

The statement “it saws like a hot knife through butter” is an excellent description of the new TS 60 K’s performance range. Its latest-generation brushless EC-TEC motor makes the saw virtually maintenance-free and powerful.

The maximum speed of 6800 revolutions per minute ensures ideal machining, an effortless feed rate and, as a result, the best cutting quality. This means that the new plunge-cut saw is robust and, in combination with the comprehensive saw system, sophisticated down to the very last detail. It can both make precise cuts in solid wood and efficiently cut large panels on top of stacks to size with ease and reduces user fatigue.

Uncompromising performance

The new TS 60 K, like all Festool tools, is of course completely covered by Festool SERVICE, giving you peace of mind for your day-to-day work. This includes repair orders, warranty claims, protection against theft and spare part availability. The new TS 60 K plunge-cut saw will be available at specialist retailers from October 2022.

Elcon vertical panel saw delivers advanced material processing for Croylek

Elcon vertical panel saws provide safe and accurate cutting solutions not only for woodbased panels, but also advanced materials including plastics, non-ferrous metals and composites. Croylek Ltd of Croyden recently invested in an Elcon 155DS wall saw to provide an in-house precision cut-to-size service. Phenolic boards, epoxy glass panels and other insulation materials are processed on demand to customers’ exact requirements.

Previously Croylek had outsourced the cutting or used CNC machines to route material to size, but this proved slow and inefficient. “The Elcon certainly gives us a much quicker turnaround on jobs,” comments general manager, Gary Bowyer. “That in itself makes the work more economic so we can offer better pricing for the products to our customers. It’s also a clean and relatively quiet operation compared to other sawing operations we run elsewhere in the factory.”

The Elcon DS model includes double cut scoring, automatic frame adjustment and repeat strip cutting facility as standard. As part of the specification, Croylek opted for electronic digital scales to the vertical and horizontal cutting positions, allowing for repeat cutting accuracy between operators of just 0.1mm.

Gary enthuses: “Daltons Wadkin have been very attentive to our needs and requirements. They were proactive in helping us with the part exchange of an existing machine as part of the purchase package, which we were very happy about.

“The after sales service has also been very good, particularly with regard to the training of our staff.”

Daltons Wadkin, sole distributors for Elcon in the UK and Ireland, provided a turnkey installation package including delivery, offloading, commissioning and certificated operator training. Ongoing support is provided for the lifetime of the machine through regionally-based service engineers.

Easy investment decision to purchase second wood waste heater

A north east joinery company has purchased a second wood waste heater to save money on its operating costs. Whitehart Joinery, based in Stockton on Tees is a British Woodworking Federation (BWF) registered licensed door processor for fire doors.

Whitehart Joinery has a wood waste heater in its original building, but needed a second one when the company expanded into an adjoining building to extend its manufacturing space. The new area didn’t have any existing heating, so had to be warmed using gas heaters on cold winter days.

Managing director of Whitehart Joinery, Peter Fitzpatrick explains: “Having already experienced the benefits of a wood waste heater, we had no hesitation in purchasing a second one, so contacted Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology to give us a quote. We have plenty of wood offcuts from the frames, doors and vision panels we manufacture, enough to run the two wood waste heaters, so it was an easy investment decision to make.”

The WT5 was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s dedicated engineers, who fitted the burner into the new building and also managed to duct some of the warm air into a separate storage area, to keep the stored wood at a suitable temperature.

Peter continues: “The wood waste burners keep the factory warm, are easy to use and save us a fortune on heating and waste disposal. They’re a great investment with a good payback. We’ve been really impressed with the service from Wood Waste Technology too. From quote to installation, the team at Wood Waste Technology has delivered everything promised.”

MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “There are a number of businesses who purchase additional wood waste heaters for their premises once they’ve experienced the benefits of having one, especially in the current economic climate when businesses are trying to reduce operating costs and expenditure.”

“The wood waste burners keep the factory warm, are easy to use and save us a fortune on heating and waste disposal. They’re a great investment with a good payback”

Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

Rhino Wood comes to the UK market

International Timber, a leading importer and distributor of bespoke, sustainable timber and panel products, has announced stocks of a new FSC certified range of modified timber.

Rhino Wood, of which International Timber is the sole UK distributor, is manufactured from sustainable, plantation-grown pine. It undergoes a process of thermal modification which brings the moisture content down to below 5% and turns the pine from a yellow colour to a more aesthetically appealing walnut brown which will naturally weather to a silver-grey.

It is then pressure impregnated with a non-toxic compound which solidifies within the cells of the timber, creating a long-lasting lowmaintenance timber which can rival the durability of traditional hardwood.

The manufacturing process uses waste products as an energy source, and in recognition of their contribution to curbing deforestation, Rhino Wood received the WWF Climate Solver Award in 2014.

Kerry Wardle, marketing manager at International Timber, said: “We are delighted to be stocking Rhino Wood, with stocks due to arrive in Septmeber. This timber is a game changer for the UK market which is struggling with global supply chain issues.

“Not only is Rhino Wood an environmentally responsible choice thanks to its sustainable sourcing, but it delivers when it comes to performance too. The impregnation treatment increases the strength of the pine timber by up to 60% without decreasing its bending ability or elasticity, resulting in a class 1 durability rating – making it ideal for applications such as cladding, decking, pergolas, gates and laminated beams.”
