Furniture & Joinery Production #347

Issue 347 | January 2023 www.furnitureproduction.net

As I write, shortly before Christmas, many conversations are rolling around my consciousness of the incredible year just gone … and a few looking forward to the new year coming. In our industry, the year heralded a return of sorts to face-to-face meetings and events. KKB Birmingham set the tone that other events would follow insofar as there were less exhibitors and visitors but that both parties welcomed the opportunity to get back together. Holz-Handwerk, Woodtech, Sicam, and Xylexpo continued that theme overseas, whereas at home, companies also, and alternatively, invested more into in-house events as a positive and targeted way to asses a supplier’s products and approach. And whilst individual events are inherently worthwhile, nothing can quite replace the massed events. From a political perspective, the events of 2022 will live long in the memory, very much for the wrong reasons. The situation was tough before the Tory turmoil began … and quickly became a lot worse with market reactions causing huge damage. Then the inexorable rise in interest rates fuelling a chase for higher wages … and here we are heading towards Christmas with the postal, railway and nursing services perhaps not unsurprisingly striking for considerable pay rises. Overlay this homebuilt pain with an international war in mainland Europe and incredible rises in fuel costs all leading to a cost of living crises … all as businesses continue wrestling with survival in a post-pandemic environment.

Yet throughout the year, what rings loudest is the resilient performance of our industry, against all these odds. Whilst I appreciate some will not be having the best of times right now, conversations I am having in mid- December with woodworking machinery and materials suppliers across the UK have been really upbeat. Industry colleagues are convinced that yes, there will be ‘a modest reset’ or a ‘minor bump in the road’ for the coming months, but beyond that they are telling me that the medium- and long-term prognosis for the British furniture and joinery industry is bright and full of opportunity … it’s there for the taking.

I hope you enjoy the issue, in print and online.

The Complete Kitchen Company invests in HOMAG EDGETEQ S-380 edge bander

The Complete Kitchen Company, situated in Wellington, Somerset was founded in 1995 by Tony Ellis. A kitchen fitter and qualified carpenter/joiner by trade, Tony has built the company’s success and excellent reputation on quality, value for money products and firstclass service.

All its furniture is manufactured in two purpose-built units totalling 16,000 sq ft of floor space. The company has two retail outlets under The Complete Kitchen Company brand, as well as suppling a large developer market and trade studios throughout the South West.

Investing in technically advanced machinery and skilled personnel have always been priorities, as managing director Tony Ellis explains: “From the outset, our philosophy has been focused on providing customers with the very best solutions at competitive prices.

“Over the years, this approach has paid dividends, helping us to establish an unparalleled reputation for the brand. A significant factor in our success has been the investment we have consistently made in the very best woodworking

machinery available. That is why we have been buying HOMAG machinery since we started the company. In fact, we’re now at a point where all our machinery is supplied by HOMAG.”

Updating our edge banding capabilities

“One of our edge banders was coming to the end of its life and while it was still working, edge banding technology has moved on so we felt it was the right time to invest in a new machine. It was important that the new edge bander would help increase our output capacity, whilst at the same time enable us to take advantage of the benefits of PUR glue.

“PUR provides an almost invisible glue line between the panel and the edge tape; it is also much more resistant to moisture and has higher thermal resistance properties, so it’s ideal to use in the manufacturing of kitchen cabinets, work surfaces and bathroom furniture.

“After discussing our requirements with HOMAG’s area sales manager, Simon Durant, we decided to invest in an EDGETEQ S-380 edge bander and XES 200 glue station.”

HOMAG’s compact XES 200 glue station

With PUR glue, there can be challenges in processing, particularly if there are extended interruptions to work, such as overnight or over the weekend, when the glue can go off.

The HOMAG XES 200 glue station eliminates these issues. A compact unit with a footprint of less than 1 sq m, it enables easy, efficient switching between different colours and glue types.

The station stores the glue application units in a vacuum; this delays the bonding time so that the PUR glue does not harden during an interruption to production. It then pre-heats the glue application unit to minimise downtime before use. Also, cleaning or glue change can be done automatically without interrupting production on the edge banding machine.

Premium quality edge banding with a small footprint

“There were a couple of reasons we decided to buy the HOMAG’s EDGETEQ S-380 edge bander,” continues Tony Ellis. “Firstly, its ability to

‘Experience has shown us that HOMAG are past masters in handling the installation of a new machine. They take care of all the details and disruption to production is kept to a minimum’

Installation

produce invisible edging was a major advantage as it enables us to manufacture high quality kitchen, bedroom and office furniture. Secondly, it has a small footprint which is important to us as space is limited in our factory.

“Experience has also shown us that HOMAG are past masters in handling the installation of a new machine. They take care of all the details and disruption to production is kept to a minimum.

“The training conducted by the installation engineers on site was excellent. It provided us with the necessary knowledge and skills to have the edge bander up and running smoothly in a few days.

“As with all HOMAG machinery, the quality, reliability and lifetime value of the EDGETEQ S-380 are clear to see, and it is already proving to be a wise investment. We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with HOMAG as we continue to provide the very best quality products for our customers,” concluded Tony Ellis.

For a demonstration or further information on HOMAG’s machinery and software, contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424 or email info-uk@homag.com. www.homag.com

In addition, the new dowels – which are part of the Titus “Engineered for Your Kitchen” programme – offer fast, tool-free insertion, reducing assembly time by up to 50% for homeassembled furniture. Alternatively, for maximum efficiency in volume production applications, they can be inserted automatically using Titus FastFit machines.

TWO NEW OSTERMANN CATALOGUES

NEW: FRONTS AND FURNITURE ROLLER SHUTTERS MADE TO MEASURE

Our range for furniture making and interior design now includes more than 20,000 items. To offer you even more service, we created 2 new catalogues: “Creative Design“ and “Edgings. Everything for Practical Processing.“ While the first catalogue, with products such as surfaces and design items, is perfect for advising your customers, the second was conceived as a reference book for planning, purchasing, and the workshop. On the inside of both catalogues, you can expect numerous inspiring application pictures with ideas for kitchens, offices, bedrooms, bathrooms, and retail shops.

Quickfit TL5 dowels, which are used in conjunction with Titus Cam5000 cams, incorporate an expanding steel sleeve that provides high resistance to torsion and pull out. This ensures rigid furniture construction, with complete freedom from the tendency for joints to loosen over time. Furniture using the dowels can also be disassembled and reassembled repeatedly without compromising joint integrity. The dowels are designed for insertion into a 5mm hole and, on insertion, they positively and reliably engage with the hole, greatly simplifying subsequent assembly steps. When edge inserted, the dowels immediately engage with the cam and remain securely positioned until the cam is tightened.

A further key feature is that the special design of the dowel head adopted for these innovative and time-saving products means that the performance of Quickfit TL5 dowels is unaffected by edge-to-hole-centre (ETHC) tolerances of up to ± 1mm. Therefore, they easily accommodate not only drilling inconsistencies, but also the natural movement of wooden panels.

The dowels can be supplied in versions to suit ETHC dimensions of 24mm and 34mm. The required hole diameter for the face board is 5mm, and for the edge board 8 mm. The minimum hole depth in the face board is 12.5mm.

Kronospan gets Lawcris in a mood

Interior design trends, this year, are set to be vast and varied. This could not have been more perfectly captured in Kronospan’s long awaited 2023 global collection launch, cleverly presenting their brand-new decors in four relatable moods.

Lauren Barker, Marketing Manager, explains: “The way designers want to decorate has recently shifted with clients no longer looking for that one particular décor trend, but, in fact, seeking that distinct combination that they can relate to. Kronospan has taken this notion and flawlessly delivered their new collection in four identifiable moods; The Nomad, The Adaptable, The Passionate and The Optimist. Each story reveals a new personality type with distinctive tastes. The

question is, which one is you? ...

“Born travellers, the honest and authentic Nomad picks up on influences as they go. Their homes bear witness to this, featuring objects made from unusual hand-woven cloth or sculptural driftwood pieces that tell a story of their lives on the move. Weathered timbers and natural fabric textures end up in a total mash up of styles and colours that somehow meld together in the most natural combinations.

“However, if you are someone who likes to make a statement, then the Passionate offers a selection of rich and opulent decors for a striking design. Impressively realistic woodgrains mixed with intense colours and powerful stone and metal finishes, these tones are for the stylish who

are confident enough to speak loud about their lifestyle, attitudes and tastes.

“Jumping to the other end of the spectrum is the Optimist, the world’s early adopter, who looks forward to change and is very is comfortable being at the front of a trend. They are at home with delicately reflective metallics, alongside coral inspired colours and elegant woodgrains resulting in a playful open-minded space.

“Finally, cheerfully taking the path to least resistance and embracing every challenge is the Adaptable, the innovator that looks to create seamless multi-functional spaces, with a hazy ambience to ensure flexibility. Muted warm tones, natural materials like wood, textile and stone help balance their spaces to work, play and relax.”

Kronospan has gone to great lengths to capture the defining nuances of the materials in this collection. In some cases, they had to source and buy commercial artwork, whole trees and salvage materials to start with. After the cutting and treatment process, an industrial size scanner provides life size photographs that, when printed, effectively become the designs.

Dean Carroll, Procurement Manager, says: “It was mesmerising to see the lengths Kronospan went to in the design process and one of many things that we are captivated by with this collection are the surface textures. Four new designs have been developed, that are very ‘matt’ infused, which is in high demand. Most importantly, they have two very sophisticated synchronised designs where the woodgrain texture exactly matches the knots and cracks of the woodgrain décor. This is called the Harmony (HU) texture and one to look out for.”

Alongside this, Lawcris have also been successfully chosen to represent Emporio Skin and exclusively distribute the highly popular Italian collection in the UK. Emporio Skin is created by Kronospan Italia and is based on the beauty reflected in natural textures of wood, stone and linen. It is a premium, high quality range that the UK market has never seen before

Try paprika! ABS edgings in warm red tones

If you want to combine materials and surfaces in a trendy way next year and set colourful accents in the process, you will not be able to avoid matt and warm red tones. Fashionable are edgings with a rusty brown, terracotta or wine red colour...

At the current furniture and supplier fairs, wood and stone décors in combination with matt plain colours are the order of the day. In addition to a variety of grey tones, it was mainly shades of green as well as warm yellows and reds that caught the eye.

For all those who have decided on red as the basic colour, the Ostermann experts once more offer recommendations for the matching edgings. All edgings are available directly from stock and can be shipped in small

quantities from 1m. Furniture makers will find more information on the mentioned products under the search item “#Highlights12” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.

Rust or Paprika?

Are you searching for a colour that goes in the direction of paprika, terracotta or rust? Then Ostermann recommends the ABS edgings Bison, Oxide red or Ceramic red. The shades range from light rust to earthy terracotta to warm copper brown and are reminiscent of the intense colours of dried and ground paprika.

Due to the orange-yellow colour components, the edgings can be combined very well with light wood décors or surfaces in rust look, but also with concrete or black metal elements.

Wine Red is always a fine choice

Less yellow and more bluish colour components can be found in the Ostermann edgings Rosso Askja, Wine Red and Rosso Jaipur. The two Rosso variants, by the way, were sampled by Ostermann to match the extremely matt surfaces of the same names by Arpa Industriale. They combine well with dark wood decors, but also with dark marble or other dark stone decors. The new trend colour “gold” is also a perfect partner for wine reds.

Edging or full service?

Businesses that want to edge their boards themselves will find at Ostermann Europe’s largest immediately available range of edgings and benefit from the company’s many services in this sector.

The latter include a quick delivery as well as coating the edgings with hotmelt adhesive or functional layers for processing with zero bondline technologies.

If there is a lack of capacity for in-house production, Ostermann also offers custommade fronts and furniture elements. Among the available options, of course, are the two extremely matt Arpa Fenix finishes Rosso Jaipur and Rosso Askja.

Simple swaps from Egger UK’s product expert

“Whether it is time, budget or design demands, there are simple solutions in the market to help value engineer even the most complex of projects. With consumers more conscious of their cash flow than ever before, it is important to offer solutions with added benefits.

Cost is always going to be a key consideration when it comes to design, and significant savings can be made by offering alternative products. For example, a solid timber surface is around 200% more expensive than a synchronised pore wood grain melamine faced chipboard (MFC) surface. As well as the reduced price tag, MFC comes with the added performance benefits of being light-fast, stable, resistant to scratches and stains, and requiring no ongoing maintenance.

Never dismiss the power of material and wood grain reproductions. More often than not, they outperform the original material in terms of

durability and maintenance, and can be a more sustainable choice. Worktops are a perfect example. With an unbranded solid stone worktop around 1100% more expensive than a 25mm square-edged laminate worktop, it would be remiss to not take a look.

Another important factor in cutting costs is time. Look for high-quality products that are easy to work with and come in optimised sheet and pack sizes. This will not only mean more efficient fabrication time but also a substantial reduction in waste, labour costs and tool and machine maintenance.

Product performance is always top priority, but there is no need to over specify. By selecting the right material technology for specific application areas, you can ensure a product’s specification is fit for purpose at no extra cost. The benefit of Egger’s matching material collection is that you can create a uniform look. By choosing everything from one source you will save time and money, whilst still being able to meet the design demands.

Whether it be glass, ceramic floor tiles, painted timber, wood veneer, or doors, it is important to look for alternative products that will put you ahead of the game. By making simple swaps, you will find projects become more affordable, quite possibly more sustainable and with added benefits for both you and your customers.”

Alexandra West, Egger UK’s Product Manager, shares how making simple swaps in furniture and interior design can offer more than just a cost saving.

FURNI FIRE PRO from Sherwin-Williams

Excellent performance on safety and finish

European legislation is continuously improving regulations of fire safety in buildings.

Part of the regulations refers directly to building materials used in construction and coverings.

Depending on placing and role, different elements of a building must fulfil certain fire classification.

Wood and wood-based panels are classified as products that have a contribution to fire (class D). They demand special treatment to achieve ‘very little contribution to fire’ (class B).

Sherwin-Williams have developed a lacquer system which allows upgrading wood-based substrates from class D to class Bs2dO - according to EN13501-1 norm.

To meet these strict regulations the lacquer system has passed a classification test on 20mm thick D-class MDF.

Features and benefits

The system consists of a 2-component basecoat – which can be used clear or coloured with pigment pastes – and a 2-component clear topcoat.

The system achieves a very transparent clear coat, or when tinted, can be used as a fully opaque finish.

Safety performance and finish performance come together perfectly in a precisely developed fire retardant lacquer system by Sherwin-Williams

If you would like to know more about our Fire Retardant solutions that can offer performance on safety and finish, welcome to visit our website.

Thanks to its moisture resistance, the surface is not only ideal for furniture surfaces, but is also particularly suitable for use in humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.

With outstanding processing properties, Fineflex is an environmentally conscious alternative for 2D lamination, as a thermoforming film for three-dimensional surfaces and wrapping or post-forming.

With growing awareness and an increased drive to provide sustainable options for the market, Decorative Panels Lamination are certain the addition of six FineFlex metallics will be welcomed by their customers. Metallics have been coming into trend for some time now, but it has always been difficult to achieve consistency within the colour. Fineflex metallic surfaces do just that, their iridescent shimmer is visible throughout the pigment creating a luxurious finish to both the eye and the touch. The super

matt finish is distinguished by the six warm and subtle earthy tones perfectly suited to create focal points and feature panels throughout the home.

Shattdecor and Fine Décor have a unique process to recycle the manufacturing scrap from their own production cycle into new raw material, thus bringing it full circle back into the production process. Decorative Panels Lamination are now part of the solution offering the perfect combination of first-class design and surface quality with increased sustainability.

VWM delivers improved CNC router performance for Screentek

Based in Chorley, Lancashire, Screentek is a successful British designer and manufacturer of high quality furniture for offices and corporate spaces. With high expectations from their customers, Screentek’s manufacturing capability likewise needs to be on point.

With Screentek having many CNC machining centres from different manufactures, it was time to look at upgrading some of the older machines with newer, faster machining capabilities and to increase production with a flexible machine and software system.

Screentek’s Head of Operations, Martyn McKendrick, began to research numerous CNC router supplier options, one of which was VWM Woodworking Machines based in Trawden near Colne in Lancashire. He reached out to Managing Director Jason Varey and had an initial discussion. After checking out numerous other potential suppliers, Martyn opted to work with VWM.

“Screentek decided to source their CNC router solution from us not only because of the inherent high quality and very competitive pricing of our machines, but also our strong service-oriented ethos,” explains Jason. “Our superior site back-up often wins us work and it turned out to be a key issue here, that and our broad product range of machines VWM offers stands us in good stead with our customers.”

Jason also points out that Screentek opted to go with them because of the breadth of

machines and industry expertise that they provide. VWM offers machines and equipment from the likes of Robland, Lange, Salvamac, Casolin, Steton, Falachi, Inventair, Purtsch and others.

Screentek decided on the highly capable Technos 2132 MD CNC router – a set-up which is ideally suited to nesting production. “The 2100mm x 3200mm table machine (Y and X axes) is our largest table size in the MD range featuring a 250mm working depth on the Z axis,” explains Jason.

“Complimenting the wide range of machining available on this machine is a 12-position tool

rack sited at the rear of the machine. This allows it to perform automatic tool changes throughout the program giving a wider range of tooling options when machining – and to speed up production time.

“Additionally, there is a fixed tool probe at the rear of the machine to guarantee accuracy between the tools on depth of cut as there is no manual setting needed. The machine also has automatic stops around two faces of the bed to locate boards correctly every time.

“The 9kw router head is capable of delivering all of Screentek’s machining needs with an inverter driven at varying spindle speeds up to

24,000rpm. All axes are designed with servo motors on precision helical racks. The servo motors are controlled from Premium Innovance Servo drives to ensure accuracy every time with rapid axes speeds of 50m/min. This is accompanied by two EuroVac 250m3 vacuum pumps and the manually-operated eight-zone matrix bed to ensure all parts are held securely during operation. The brains of this machine is the Syntec 60CA controller which has a very user-friendly operating system.”

In terms of what the new machine has meant to Screentek, Jason says: “It has improved their performance as our software is much more user-friendly and has far more features than before. Also the Technos machine is a more accessible machine which also benefits from quicker feed rates and a far superior vacuum system enabling the customer to successfully complete nesting production.”

The machine is fitted with reduction boxes to the X and Y axes for greater power, light beans to the loading area, a machine guard rail to three sides and full CE regulation.

How has VWM navigated the challenging last two years, what does the future look like? “The past two years have been an excellent trading period for us,” says Jason, “we anticipated that from July onwards in 2021, it would be a very quiet period and this would continue through to June 2022, but this did not happen. Looking forward, we have two full joinery shop fit-outs scheduled in January and five CNC machines to install as well.

“Looking back, Covid was a

fantastic trading period for us. We did struggle a little with certain supply chains, but on the whole, it was a fantastic growth period – in 2019 we supplied 19 CNC machines and that rose to 23 on 2020 and this number continues to grow. Couple this with our other product lines we have seen a very sharp up turn,” says Jason.

“For some time our most attractive product line has been our impressive Technos range of

CNC routers – if you consider you can have a machine delivered and installed in a week period from as little as £23,950 it represents amazing value for money. We then offer a range of machines all the way up to high production units which can run shift patterns in the most demanding production environment.

“So a customer can feel totally comfortable in investing in one of our machines as they can

The Technos 2132 MD CNC router is an idealchoice for manufactures requiring nesting capability

grow with us without the need to source from somewhere else and that makes life a lot simpler for our customers – we offer very competitive prices, good quality machines and outstanding service backup all from under one roof.”

Although confident Jason is aware that the current economic situation will have an effect. “We can see a small downturn coming but we think it’s more a seasonal one rather than a recession – UK companies produce some excellent products, and this will continue to grow as our manufacturing gets stronger, our stock levels are still very good, so we are not worried at the moment.

“The challenges for 2023 are really down to the economy,” says Jason, “if we continue to talk ourselves into recession then it will happen, but most manufacturing sectors are still going very strong and as long as we can get supplies in then demand will continue to be there. In terms of products, we have an exciting range of laser products arriving in February 2023, so we are opening up a new market place for ourselves in this sector,” concludes Jason.

Kimla CNC technology; routers, waterjets, fibre lasers

‘Kimla are unique in the market. They have approached the design of their products from a very different standpoint to the majority of other CNC manufacturers. This is immediately evident in the overall build quality but can also be seen in the software and control system,’ comments Daltons Wadkin Managing Director, Alex Dalton.

Founded by award winning Polish entrepreneur Przemysław Kimla, the company spent its first years developing software and electronics, providing CNC systems for third party manufacturers. This included manufacturing PLC’s, inverters and drives – a complete eco system for computer numerical control. It soon became apparent that in order to exploit the full capabilities of the system, Kimla would need to make their own machines. Twenty-five years on and Kimla have over 250 employees across three locations producing a minimum of one CNC machine every day.

34 CNC MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT
Daltons Wadkin have been sole distributors for Kimla CNC machines for over ten years. During that time the brand has gone from strength to strength with the continual development of cut-ting-edge routers, waterjets and fibre lasers.

“I have visited the Kimla factory many times and each time I go there is something new to see,” enthuses Alex. “Year on year growth is over 25% – a key aspect driving this demand is an unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence. Almost every aspect of the machine is manufactured in house; monolithic frame; high precision surface grinding; software; PLC; inverter and more. The result is an uncompromised CNC machine with mechanics and electronics working in harmony.”

Further expansion of Kimla’s manufacturing capability is well underway with a fourth site due for completion in 2023. The new purpose built factory will boast a production area of almost 300,000sq ft and will allow Kimla to keep pace with soaring demand.

The Kimla range includes three-, four- and fiveaxis CNC routers and knife cutting systems, from compact prototyping models through to high production machining centres for processing solid wood, wood-based panels, composites, non-ferrous metals, rubber, foam and other advanced materials. Particularly useful is the option for an increased Z axis height up to 2100mm.

Waterjet models are popular for customers working with glass, stone, granite, marble and ceramics which are among the hardest most brittle materials encountered in industry. Working up to a thickness of 200mm or more, one of the principle advantages of CNC waterjet machines is the width of cut, less than 1 mm, allowing cutting out of extremely intricate shapes and precision cutting of tight corners.

New to the Daltons Wadkin portfolio for 2022 is the Kimla range of fibre lasers for processing ferrous and non-ferrous sheet metal. An evolutionary jump from CO2 lasers, fibre lasers deliver uncompromised performance when coupled with Kimla’s unique CNC motion technology. With automatic pallet loading, compact operational footprint and a choice of laser powers up to 12kW, the Kimla’s range of fibre lasers are aimed at manufacturers looking for a dynamic and highly efficient cutting system.

>> >>

One of Kimla’s key areas of innovation is in their linear drive technology. Again, developed and manufactured in house, linear drives are an option on most models, but standard on each axis on their fibre lasers. High powered electromagnets produce frictionless movement – with no wearable parts, speed, acceleration and accuracy is increased tenfold over traditional rack and pinion systems. At the heart of every Kimla CNC is their patented Dynamic Vector

Analysis (DVA) control system – processing up to 20,000 lines of G-code per second for smooth regulation of the feed speed resulting in an unrivalled finish across a range of materials. Regardless of what make or model machine you consider for your own production needs, per-haps the most important aspect to consider is support and back up. This is where the symbiosis of Kimla and Daltons Wadkin create a winning formula.

Daltons Wadkin has developed a specialist core team of CNC engineers within their support services department, dedicated to looking after Kimla customers across the UK and Ireland. This includes regionally based technicians for on-site support, a technical help desk for telephone and net assistance and extensive spare parts inventory held at their Nottingham facility.

Absolute safety and 4.0 craftsmanship from SCM

SCM presents Blade Off, the predictive safety system for circular saws recognised with an award at Xylexpo in October and the new compact three-axis Startech CN K machining centre.

Absolute safety and programming simplicity as well as control for artisan workers with less experience using tool machines, as well as the chance to benefit from all the digital advantages – the latest products from SCM in joinery which made their debut at the Xlyexpo 2022, meet all these important objectives.

Blade Off

In Milan at Xylexpo, Blade Off, the exclusive technological solution applied to SCM circular saws, won the XIA Xylexpo Innovation Award in the ‘panel machining’ category.

Blade Off is a predictive system of direct detection that eliminates any kind of accidental contact between the operator’s hand and the blade. This is thanks to smart sensors that can identify and recognise the human body from materials that can come into contact with the blade. The system triggers even before the blade is accidentally touched or the operator gets too close, by activating a barrier that protects the whole danger area around the blade.

Should a possible collision situation arise, the system automatically excludes the blade and stops the program running, without damaging any part of the machine.

A further bonus, that makes this system even safer, is that the detection is not based on reelaborations/predictions made by algorithms, nor optical detections that could be read as calculation errors or poor visibility of the video camera.

Furthermore, the protection is enhanced on three sides of the machine (piece entrance and

side approaches to the blade) to prevent any kind of contact, even caused by inappropriate or accidental movements.

The system also activates with high cutting speed, without slowing down machining, and includes the possibility of an unlimited reactivation, that does not influence the cutting precision nor the machine’s performance.

Another important advantage is the possibility of viewing and monitoring the operating status of the machine thanks to a useful LED light positioned on the blade’s protection.

Startech CN K

The Startech CN K is a compact three-axis machining centre which also made its debut at Xylepxo. It was developed for any kind of routing, decorations, scoring, production of signs and 3D model prototype.

The CN K also provides machining in absolute safety: its integral cabin, with internal LED lighting, guarantees the operator’s safety and keeps the surrounding area clean, as well as dramatically reducing the noise produced by machining.

The three-axis machining centre is unique in its kind with its 2.4kW electro-spindle with R25 attachment generally used on more powerful machines.

Another significant advantage is its easy programming thanks to the ‘open’ virtual humanmachine interface to import G-code from any kind of CAD/CAM software.

Furthermore, optional extras have been devised specifically to ensure no limits are imposed on the user’s creativity: the interpolating fourth axis (turning) that can be positioned on the worktable, the pneumatic suction cup kit to attach the piece (again on the worktable), and the detection sensor at tool height to guarantee maximum reliability.

Startech CN Plus

Startech CN Plus is the CNC drilling centre designed for SMEs as well as large joinery workshops that produce off-line or host prototyping departments. Indeed, the machine has eight separate vertical spindles, six horizontal spindles, the blade in X and a version with milling unit.

One significant advantage is its excellent flexibility: furniture parts can easily be created without having to reposition the tools and without intervention from the operator to set up the worktable and machine when the panel sizes change. Set-up and implementation times are reduced to a minimum thanks to a speed of 40m/min.

Excellent advantages in small spaces: Startech CN Plus takes up just 5m2 in space. At Xylexpo,

SCM’s CNC drilling centre was one of the leading solutions for the Smart&Human Factory for the artisan worker: an integrated cell for flexible and customised production from the raw material to the finished piece of furniture, including the Invincibile SI Xcircular saw and the ME 40TR edgebander – three machines for an orchestrated work that dramatically reduces times and margins of error. www.scmgroup.com

Shortened lead times for a number of Masterwood CNC machines

As suppliers of parts and materials, across all industries, endure the ongoing global struggle, Masterwood GB was facing delivery times of up to six months for new machines. As the demand for these is still going strong, Masterwood GB have pre-ordered a range of machines, to go into production at the Rimini factory in Italy.

The machines are built to mid-range specifications, with the ability to retrofit additional options, such as waste conveyors and a fourth axis, so every machine can meet the customer’s requirements without the need to compromise. Alternatively, items initially added to the machine can be removed if not required, to avoid unnecessary costs for the customer.

When a Masterwood customer in Northern Ireland found their 18-year-old CNC was no longer viable for repair, the decision was made to purchase a new Masterwood Project 470L. As the machine was near completion when the order was placed in early October, delivery from Italy and installation was completed in just four weeks.

The current range of stock machines available from Masterwood GB includes: – the versatile four-axis Project 470L, also available as three-axis – a Winner 250, Masterwood’s entry level short bed CNC; suitable for doors, windows, cabinets and other bespoke work – a Winner 485L, fixed specification full five-axis long bed CNC – TF 600 KT, the latest addition to the Masterwood CNC drilling range. High speed drilling on all six faces of a panel, plus routering above and below with a six-position tool changer.

Masterwood continues to develop its full range of CNC machinery, as well as the recently added beam saws and panel saws, which have already been selling well across Europe and received high praise from customers for their quality and build strength. Special machines for doors, windows, and frames are still an integral part of the Masterwood range, and with the option of automation and full production lines,

TF 600KT – for high speed drilling and routering

Masterwood can provide solutions to business, large and small.

With the support of KDT Machinery and Masterwood’s own software house, the Italian manufacturer is moving forward with upgrading existing software design packages, as well as creating new packages. The software available covers standard windows, traditional box windows, door sets, staircases, cabinets, nesting, and 3D, for three, four and five axis machines. A new version of the longestablished MasterWorks CAD/CAM system is under development and will be available on new machines, and as an upgrade for existing customers.

Masterwood GB can offer bespoke demonstrations on a range of products and software at our showroom near Gatwick Airport. On show we have a five axis pod and rail, fouraxis matrix bed, compact drilling machine, high speed drilling machine, and a beam saw.

Framing the future with Weinig

With a heritage spanning over 150 years, the upholstery specialist, Alstons, has become one the best-known sofa manufacturers in the UK and continues to provide furniture outlets with British-made sofas from its premises in Colchester. Following the sale of the business in 2015, the award-winning manufacturer has continued to invest in its 8000sq m manufacturing facilities, purchasing a new Weinig Opticut S90 Cross Cut Saw and Powermat P1500 Moulder with EM100 feeder to increase output and reduce running costs in its saw mill.

In 2020, the decision to replace two of the companies most integral machines in its sawmill was taken. “After 23 years of service, our trusted Weinig Opticut 200 roller-feed cross cut and Weinig 23E moulder – which we had been using to manufacturer Birch piece parts for sofa frames – were showing signs of age,” begins Michael Parker, Facilities Manager at Alstons.

“We look after our machines and make sure a Weinig engineer comes to service them each year but there comes a time when you have to weigh up the practical implications of running an older machine. At some point, they will become obsolete and spare parts will be impossible to find. The fact that Weinig still holds parts for a 23-year-old machine is testament to the build quality of these machines but we needed to think longer term and the knock on effect a failing machine could have on production at a later date. Then there was a question of technology, speed and automation. Machinery has come a long way in 23 years and we didn’t want to get left behind.”

In 2020, the cross-cut saw was replaced with a brand new Weinig Opticut S90 push-feed Cross Cut Saw, which removed the manual work involved in passing timber through the old saw, providing more accuracy to the ‘cut-to-length’ product and avoiding a further secondary cross-cutting process later in production. With a clear distinction between the output, quality and cost-savings associated with the new machine, the Weinig 23E moulder followed suit. In the summer of 2022, it was replaced with a Powermat 1500 and EM100 feeder. “The cost and time-saving benefits of running the two new machines side by side was immediate,” recalls Michael. “The set-up times on both machines were more than halved and the need for manual set-up and regular adjustments were a thing of the past.”

Alston’s moulder took the longest to set-up when working on small batch runs that required one of five different radiuses and profiles. “It was a laborious process and required a certain level of skill,” says Michael. “The operator had to change the cut-ter blocks, wind the heads up and down and amend the top, side and bottom pressures every time we wanted to complete a short production run. Now, the Powermat 1500 is pre-programmed and ready to go at the touch of a button.

“Weinig’s Powerlock clamping system also

allows us to change tools within a matter of seconds safely and it’s really easy to do. This has seen the set-up times on this machine reduce from 20 minutes to just five. When you think we could be running 10 different jobs on the moulder in one day, the easy set-up process alone saves us over three hours a day and that’s before calculating the increased speed of the production cycle and reduced handling associated with EM100 feeder we installed alongside it.”

46 CNC MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT
“Like many manufacturing companies, skilled labour is often difficult to come by. The Powermat 1500 offers a solution. The machine monitors the complete machining process, including the top pressures and notifies the operator if it detects any potential problems, avoiding damage and expensive maintenance costs”
Weinig’s Powermat 1500 has increased output and reduced running costs Michael Parker, Facilities Manager at Alstons

Additional time saving has also been put down to the moulder’s user-friendly design, which includes its intuitive machine controls and tool accessibility, and the additional EM100 feeder. “The EM100 feeder allows for cut to length material to be fed via the hopper feeder rather than feeding long lengths and then cutting after-wards. The long timber lengths caused some slippage from time to time and made working with timber as long as 4.8 metres labour intensive. Now, operators are not pushing timber through. They simply load the hopper and the machine does the rest. This not only streamlines the production but also feeds the machine uniformly, which eliminates marks on the timber.”

Intelligent tooling options were also included on Alston’s Powermat 1500 and supplied by an external tooling specialist. “We opted for a reversible Tip Tooling system with constant radial settings,” says Michael. “This allows the machine to run at higher speeds of 8000rpm and not 6000rpm and, if required, gives us the flexibility to remove more material more quickly, accurately and to a better finish, adding to our efficiencies. This was an upgrade but we knew it would allow us to effectively machine lower

grade timber suitable for sofa frames.”

The intelligent inverter-driven motors also simplify the running and maintenance of the moulder. Michael says, “Like many manufacturing companies, skilled labour is often difficult to come by. The Powermat 1500 offers a solution. The machine monitors the complete machining process, including the top pressures and notifies the operator if it detects any potential problems, avoiding damage and expensive maintenance costs. The machine also comes with a remote monitoring package that allows engineers to dial into the PLC and access the machine’s diagnostics remotely to reduce any future repair costs. We’re yet to use this but it’s something we’re looking to use on both machines in 2023.”

Alston’s energy consumption has also greatly improved. “We couldn’t have fore-seen the energy crisis but we’re pleased we made the changes when we did,” admits Michael. “The overall

running cost of the moulder has reduced from 74kW to 58kW per hour and the speed each batch is completed has reduced by 20%. Plus, each energy-efficient IE3 motor offers us a 15% saving. It soon adds up. We’re also able to turn the motors down to reduce energy consumption when performing simple jobs like ripping.”

Due to the speed and accuracy of both machines, the sofa manufacturer now machines the same amount of timber in four days as it previously did in five – not only reducing energy consumption but also giving Michael the flexibility to use his operators in different areas of the mill. “Our wood mill is the most labourintensive part of our business but thanks to machines like these, we see this changing. We will al-ways need a skilled team of frame-makers and upholsterers on the floor but technology will allow us to create a more streamlined production process that makes our employees’ lives easier.”

Michael adds: “In my eyes, Weinig is one of the best machinery manufacturers in the world and they offer the best after-sales service we’ve had. You often read about happy customers saying all the right things but in our case, this is the honest truth. Weinig’s spare parts team and engineers are highly knowledgeable and really helpful – the best I’ve come across in 20 years.

“We’ve built a brilliant relationship with the team in the UK and they understand our business. The spare parts team know what we need, even when we don’t. They are like a family to us and that’s how it should be. They’ve even been happy to take calls on a weekend when we’ve needed advice. You simply don’t come across this level of service anywhere else. You might think you’re paying a premium for Weinig machines but when they last over 20 years, this pales into insignificance. You get what you pay for, so why would you look anywhere else?”

Sanding how-to in practice by Festool

Over the last few years, renovating old houses and apartments has been in vogue. Most of these buildings date back to the period between 1960 and 1980, meaning there is a lot of work to do – every surface needs to be renovated and the related sub-surfaces indoors must be prepared.

Sanding is required when renovating and restoring old structures ‒ in all possible configurations. It’s not uncommon for certain parts of the building to remain occupied during a renovation, making clean work with low volumes of generated dust all the more important.

Due to the increasing demands that customers place – with regard to the quality, durability and sustainability of the surface and materials – the requirements for painting businesses are also increasing. Ultimately, a surface is only ever as good as the preparation of the subsurface.

To meet these demands, the ideal subsurface preparation and professional sanding are gaining increasing importance. In this article, sanding expert Philipp Stahl (master painter and application engineer at Festool) explains how this is interpreted in practice: “With all sanding work, a harmonised sanding system is key to quality and working progress”. Painting

businesses usually encounter these sanding requirements: Sanding off unsound old coats, or those that are incompatible with new coats, adapting and smoothing surfaces and removing unevenness, as well as intermediate sanding of layers of repair compound. A harmonised sanding system helps to complete these tasks to a suitable standard. It consists of the ideal

abrasive paper for the sanding requirement in question, the right sanding pad and the compatible sander in combination with the optimum dust extraction system. With sanding systems that can be combined in a variety of ways, everyday work becomes more effective, delivers the required result more quickly and is also more healthy ‒ for employees of the

painting business as well as for the customer, who often remains living in a separate area of the building during the painting work. For every requirement there is an individual solution. You just have to know the best way to use it.

Many sanders – which one to choose?

“There is no single, universal sander – the same is true when renovating. It always depends on the main requirements to be met,” explains Philipp. For example, is a high material removal capacity required, or a particularly fine sanding finish? Or do large wall and ceiling surfaces have to be sanded right into the smallest corners?

There are specific sanders for every task: Long-reach sanders in various configurations, numerous eccentric sanders with different sanding strokes, rotary sanders with eccentric motion and different sanding disc diameters, as well as orbital sanders. “Every painting business works differently. This makes it difficult to recommend a specific one to choose. In general, I would give the following recommendation: For painting businesses that often perform drywall construction work, it is worth buying a longreach sander.

“For smaller surfaces on walls and ceilings such as in guest toilets or in stairwells, I recommend the handy ETS EC 150/5 eccentric sander. For renovating windows with damaged old paintwork around the weatherboard, it is worth using a Rotex RO 90 geared eccentric sander. It has four functions: Coarse and fine sanding, polishing and triangular sanding. The RUTSCHER RTS or DTS orbital sander is suitable for corners and smaller surfaces.

“The RTSC, DTSC or ETSC cordless compact sanders are extremely practical for jobs performed outdoors or on scaffolding – where there is no power source. And if there is no power source for corded sanders, the new SYSPowerStation is there to help,” explains Philipp Stahl.

Woodwork: Proper door preparation

If historical doors which are worth preserving need to be prepared in order to maintain the special character of the house, meticulous refurbishment is important in order to preserve the design of the door for many years to come. Every door is one of a kind. Is the door in question an interior or an exterior door, an

entrance that shapes the building’s external appearance? If so, it’s all the more important to think about the correct approach in advance. This often poses the question as to how much of the original material can be preserved.

This is not only true of the doors, but of course of the frames as well. The doors are first examined, meaning old coats are checked and damaged areas in the wood are determined. The existing paint layers can be sanded smoothly

and reliably with the ETS EC 150/5 or ETS EC 125 eccentric sander, to name a couple of tool recommendations. With the right speed, loose pieces are removed without too much pressure and intact surfaces are roughened.

“We recommend that you use abrasives with a grit from P180 for water-based paint, and a grit from P150 for alkyd resin paint for lightly sanding the surface,” explains application engineer Philipp Stahl.

Hard-to-reach areas on profile grooves and transitions can be resanded using an especially adaptable abrasive sponge. After lightly sanding the old paint, you can fill small holes and damaged areas. Of course, dust extraction is a must when lightly sanding.

After sanding, you can vacuum the sanded surfaces thoroughly with a mobile dust extractor, and, if necessary, you can clean up with an anti-dust and tack cloth. For intermediate

sanding with the ETS EC, we recommended using GRANAT abrasives with a grit of P240 to P500. The speed should be reduced to avoid sanding through or heating up the primed surface. Hard-to-reach areas on profile grooves and transitions can be resanded using a manual abrasive. Renewed splendour for old windows. Renovating old window frames and casements made from wood to a professional standard is a challenging task. This is true in the conservation of cultural heritage as well as in the modern and sustainable handling of existing materials such as wood. Meticulous refurbishment with the appropriate expertise can make a window construction usable for many more years.

Perfect lighting conditions: an underestimated issue during sanding During sanding in particular, the important

of a well-lit surface is often underestimated. But light plays an essential part in the quality of your work. Professionals achieve the best results in

well-lit working areas. That is why Festool has identified this requirement some years ago and uses modern LED technology in its working lights, namely the SYSLITE DUO working light and the SYSLITE STL 450 surface control light. Their numerous advantages make them stand out from conventional lights. The SYSLITE DUO working light, for example, combines an illuminating power of 8000 lumen with a daylight-like colour of 5000 Kelvin. Thanks to specially arranged LEDs, it achieves homogeneous illumination across 180° and also radiates evenly across large workspaces. Its robust design makes it an ideal light source for all trades, both on and off the construction site. In particularly tight spaces, the KAL II SYSLITE working light ensures optimum illumination. www.festool.co.uk

New HETAS registration scheme to maintain RHI payments

Alexander Franklin, Director at Ranheat Engineering Ltd, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of Industrial wood-waste burning equipment. This month we look at the new HETAS registration scheme for Biomass Service Operatives.

HETAS was originally formed to provide regulation of suppliers and installers to the domestic market. This was rightly so to protect consumers from “Cowboy installers” Wood-burning domestic stoves if not installed correctly can be lethal.

The new HETAS registration scheme is to become a requirement for service engineers working on installations that are on the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat incentive. (NDRHI)

User of the NDRHI in their annual submission to OFGEM will have to supply a service sheet from a HETAS registered service provider’s registration number, the make and model of the system. OFGEM will then cross reference this number with the HETAS register to ensure that the service provider has the relevant training on the machine that is getting serviced.

This is to avoid the unsafe situation or a HETAS approved domestic chimney sweep from being able to service Industrial Biomass Installations of all sizes including Part B permitted installations and industrial installation that now come or will come under the Medium Combustion Plant Directive. (MCPD)

This is like asking a Gas Safe registered plumber to go and service a gas fired power station.

They would be totally out of their depth and might lead to potentially dangerous situations.

All Industrial Wood Waste boilers whether on the RHI or not come under Local Authority or Environment Agency control.

Part of this control is to ensure that the plant is tested annually by an INDEPENDENT test house.

Industrial Biomass Installations are complex highly specialised installations with a lot of control. This is because in 2013 a NOx limit was introduced as a permit requirement and a lower particulate level.

OFGEM adopted this lower particulate limit as a condition of being accepted onto the RHI long after 2013. Since 2013 the local authority required this to be met by Part B permitted installations.

The testing required by HETAS is at a far lower standard than required by local authorities and just requires the service technician to do some basic test to ensure the system is in the correct ballpark for emissions.

The new HETAS registration scheme seems to ignore the legislation that is already in place. Most HETAS registered Biomass Service personnel will not be aware of the permitting regulations or the need for independent tests being carried out by Accredited test houses. Most HETAS registered operatives will not have the equipment to test an industrial installation for NOx and particulate, they will not be able to measure Formaldehyde or HCl.

These are all required for a permitted installation.

The requirements to meet the conditions of a local authority permit or Environment Agency permit (SEPA) in Scotland, is enforceable by law.

HETAS registration is required to meet OFGEM RHI payments. This means this is important to a lot of our customers. OFGEM and HETAS are introducing this system to try and drive-up standards. As those not burning Industrial Wood Waste do not need to have permits and annual tests. For old biomass systems at 1MW, they are only going to be covered MCPD in 2025 and 2030. This HETAS scheme is designed for those system that are not already under exacting legislation and annual tests.

It does feel that Industrial Wood Waste system are already tightly regulated, and this is just adding additional administrative burden to good actors trying to improve standards with the bad actors. I am willing to go alone and work

with HETAS and OFGEM on these points because they are trying to drive up emission standards. A few changes to the rules and the implementation will mean that this new system will achieve an improvement in the emissions of all NDRHI systems.

Ranheat Engineering are a leading manufacturer of industrial Biomass Boiler and Heater installations. Recent installations have included a site with two 1.75MW boilers linked together on a 30-acre site able to burn in excess of 120 tonnes per week.

For our NDRHI customers we are putting in place service plans that guarantee your boiler is going to have all the correct emissions tests and service certificates for submission to OFGEM.

Bespoke business saves money with wood waste heater

Bespoke furniture manufacturer, PR Bespoke Interiors has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its heating and waste disposal costs.

PR Bespoke Interiors Ltd is developing a reputation for offering luxury high-end furniture to its clients, including those involved in commercial and manufacturing projects as well as private customers and interior designers.

When the business launched in 2019, the team moved into a workshop in Bredbury, near Stockport that had no heating. Having previously worked for a company that used a wood waste heater, directors Ryan and Patryck knew that investing in a wood waste heater was the perfect solution for their new business due to the amount of wood waste generated, so started to research some options.

Office Manager, Holly Wallis explains: “When we moved into the building in spring, we knew one of our first investments needed to be a wood waste heater, so we could burn all our waste wood to create free heating for the factory in winter, and also save money on waste disposal. We were recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology due to the quality and durability of its heaters by a trusted colleague, and we’re so pleased we’re did!”

After speaking with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology and arranging a quote and site survey, PR Bespoke Interiors ordered a WT15 which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, who managed to vent the heat generated to key areas of the workshop.

Holly explains: “We’re delighted with our new wood waste heater. We’d hate to have to heat the building any other way, as the open plan nature of the workshop and high ceilings would be awful for retaining heat and our heating bills would be a fortune! Wood Waste Technology’s installation team was exceptionally helpful, in that the engineers were able to direct the majority of the heat to the areas we need to keep warm the most. The advice and help from the team at Wood Waste Technology has been excellent, and we’ve been really impressed with how the heater operates and how easy it is to use.”

MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’ve been delighted to help the team at PR Bespoke Interiors and are so pleased they’re delighted with the results. We’re very grateful to the people who help to spread the word about Wood Waste Technology by recommending us to others – and are proud to be manufacturing such high quality heaters here in the UK.”

Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60%

cheaper than other suppliers.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters.

The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems – a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.
