Whenever you take a moment to assess the current business situation it can be easy to conclude that an uneasy stultifying and grim environment surrounds us … getting in the way of us achieving our business objectives. But having travelled the country meeting with business owners for the last 30 years or so, the furniture and joinery industry is blessed with resilience, a hard-working ethos, tremendous resolve and one that is ripe with self-invention, evolution and boundless creativity. In this industry, you very much make your own luck.
Along with at home events, national and international exhibitions, 2023 sees a full return to getting out and about and amongst the world’s leading and most dynamic suppliers of machinery and equipment, and fittings and components for furniture and joinery manufacturing. This heralds a return to that confident pre-pandemic stride of making sure you see first-hand what’s out there, what opportunities are available … waiting for you for you to compare side-by-side. As ever, Furniture & Joinery Production will be there, reporting from these events, even if you can’t make it this time around.
This May in Germany, I expect to be learning all about the multitude of new products at Interzum in Cologne and Ligna in Hannover. Expectantly, ambitious furniture and joinery manufacturers will gather in Cologne to appraise new fittings concepts and finishing options which can help develop and elevate their products over the coming years. Both Interzum and Ligna are unmissable and hugely important events. On the woodworking side of things, the on-going evolution (or revolution in the case of Industry 4.0) will pick up once more at Ligna where the world’s creative suppliers both large and small make an impressive demonstration of the considerable strides being made across the board on all fronts.
Concluding, I would like to welcome you to the first issue of 2023 which features three of the most hotly contested marketplaces for furniture and joinery manufacturers: Fittings, Materials & Components, Edgebanding Materials & Technology, and Surfacing & Decorative Panels. These sectors are instinctively innovation-rich and thrive on new developments to maintain their class-leading positions. I am sure there’ll be plenty there to satisfy the most demanding readership.
I trust you will enjoy the magazine … and do abridge yourself of the digital variant via a link from the website to Issu, and finally, don’t forget to sign up to the weekly Newsletter.

Ipswich joinery company continues to expand
Ipswich-based Apex Joinery, part of The First Interiors Group, continues to expand at pace, appointing Wayne Hines as Joinery Manager and Ben Stiff as Workshop Manager.
In his new role, Wayne, aged 53, is responsible for the smooth day-to-day operations of Apex Joinery, organising the workflow, overseeing the team and ensuring all health and safety regulations are maintained.
Wayne started his career as a joiner at Taylor Made Joinery before being promoted to contracts manager, followed by workshop assistant manager. He joins Apex Joinery from Monarch Joinery, also based in Ipswich, where he was workshop manager for eight years. Having worked on a number of high-profile contracts, including the re-build of Windsor Castle after the fire and refurbishment works at Downing Street, Wayne has enjoyed a varied career.
Commenting on his appointment, Wayne says: “I was attracted to Apex Joinery as it is a well-established company with a good reputation for supplying high-quality joinery to local businesses, private clients and commercial joinery projects. Wage trends revealed in annual BFM survey
National trade body the British Furniture Manufacturers (BFM), has released its annual wages survey for 2022/23.
The survey analyses trends in pay for 2022 and outlines forecast pay awards for 2023.
The document also identifies issues that impact on wages in the sector, as well as breaking down average pay for specific roles in furniture manufacturing.
BFM MD Sean Holt said: “BFM’s annual wages survey offers useful insights into wage trends over the past 12 months, alongside forecasts for the coming year.
“This year’s survey revealed that 69% of survey respondents have budgeted for pay awards in 2023, with more than half planning to offer more than 4%.
“The survey also highlights areas of concern, with the rising cost of raw materials and economic uncertainty identified as the two
main factors most likely to impact on pay in the sector.”
In addition, the survey found that 77% of respondents were experiencing moderate to severe problems in acquiring skilled staff.
Sean added: “We recently launched our Future of Furniture campaign to raise the profile of the furniture industry and reach those who may not have thought about it as a career choice.
“We have interviewed a number of apprentices who have shared their experiences and what they have found most valuable in their career journey so far. Many of them see themselves moving into different positions as their career develops.
“The industry has a variety of positions available for new entrants and experienced individuals and we hope that our campaign will highlight the opportunities available to all.”

New area sales manager for Weinig UK
Callum Richards has been appointed as Weinig UK’s new Area Sales Manager for the South West and South Wales. Covering Weinig and Holz-Her brands across the region, Callum will be responsible for strengthening sales and developing key relationships with new and existing customers for the leading woodworking machinery manufacturer.
With a degree in engineering and a steadfast background in business to business sales, Callum’s technical, problem-solving capabilities and sales experience make him an ideal candidate for a role in woodworking machinery sales.
Callum says: “With a background in both engineering and sales, I’m in a pretty unique position. It allows me to have a good understanding of both sides of the coin and to find
solutions quickly and efficiently. From a technical stand-point, I can appreciate the workings of the machine, why each component is needed and ultimately, what benefit it has to a company’s production.
“By being able to relay this message back to the customer in a clear and concise way, I believe I
will be able to help my customers get the very best results. I’m really looking forward to taking on Weinig UK’s existing territory in the South West and growing its customer base even further. This challenge really excites me and I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

From high fashion to factory floor
Manufacturing is often considered to be a man’s world - but at Allan Brothers Linzi Watson is forging an impressive career as the company’s first female Production Section Manager.
Back in 2008, when she ran a clothing shop in Berwick-uponTweed, she enjoyed selling the latest fashion trends, and nothing could have been further from her mind than the grime and sawdust of the factory floor!
So why did she join Allan Brothers?
According to Linzi, it was a great opportunity to try something completely different and to develop her skills in a well-established local business. Plus, the prospect of more regular 9-5 working hours with great conditions and benefits was also very appealing!
What do you know about windows?
The story of Linzi’s job interview is now legendary in the company.
“What do you know about windows?” was the interviewer’s first question. Like a flash the
response came: “Well I know how to open and close them!”
Despite this inauspicious start, Linzi’s contagious enthusiasm and amazing work ethic got her the job as customer service assistant where she was then plunged into the world of production planning, deliveries and the logistics side of an extremely busy timber window and door manufacturing business and was even sent to sister companies in Poland and Estonia to learn from their processes.
Once she was well versed in all the ins and outs of logistics, she was quickly promoted to Planning and Internal Sales Manager in charge of a team of six people.
Like a duck to water
After 13 years in the back-office, Linzi realised that her heart lay with the nitty-gritty of production and so she was keen to take on an even bigger challenge – the role of Production Section Manger on the factory floor.
“I’m quite driven. I love working under pressure and seeing the
whole picture, how everything fits together, and where the potential bottle necks are, and so when the position of Production Section Manger became available, I knew that this is exactly what I wanted to do!”
Linzi has taken to her new role like a ‘duck to water’ and is now responsible for the paint, hanging lines and glazing sections through to the loading bays and stores, overseeing a workforce of 30 plus (mainly male) production
Callum Richards, Weinig UK Area Sales Manager for the South West and South Wales
Michael Weinig (UK) Ltd adds, “Callum’s technical competencies and sales background make him an ideal fit for Weinig UK’s sales team and stand him in good stead to navigate the production requirements set out by our customers.
“He’s eager to succeed and, whilst he’s only at the beginning of his career in the woodworking industry, his passion and enthusiasm for the role makes him an exciting addition to the team. I’m confident Callum’s skill set will make him a valuable asset to the Weinig and Holz-Her team as he builds on new and existing relationships throughout the South West and South Wales.” 01235 557600

operatives.
“There’s obviously been a lot to learn technically, but everyone has been really supportive, and I think the lads on the factory floor actually quite like having a female boss – but we still laugh about my first job interview when I only knew ‘how to open and close a window! A few of them may still say this –but in good humour.”
Linzi still loves her fashion and buying clothes, so does she ever regret swapping her stilettos for steel-capped boots?
“Never! For me, working at Allan Brothers has been the best move I ever made. I’m proud to be the company’s first female Production Section Manger and I would encourage more women to take up a career in manufacturing.
“My advice to other women getting into these fields is that you’ve sometimes got to be your own role model. Don’t shy away from something just because there are no other women in that role or space.”

New year, new team members for TM Machinery
Meet Dan Clements
TM Machinery’s new Engineer
A self-proclaimed history buff and avid pub quiz goer, Dan started his career in the British Army as a Tank Crewman for the Heavy Cavalry Unit.
His role, which spanned over eight years, saw him complete tours in Afghanistan and gain qualification in mechanics and telecommunications. This stood him in good stead for future roles as a PDI Engineer and later, embarking on two Service Engineer roles in the woodworking industry.
Dan says, “I’ve always had an interest in engineering and how things work. I joined the British Army after I left school and I spent a lot of my time learning how to install, maintain and fix diesel engines. Getting stuck in was great fun but my progress had hit a bottleneck and I wanted to put my qualifications to good use on Civvy Street.”
Dan’s background in mechanical engineering, teamed with his proven problem-solving skills and long-standing interest in technology lead him to become an engineer, joining TM Machinery in December 2022.
“I’ve gained experience working
on a wide range of panel and solid wood machines and it’s been fantastic working on prestigious brands like Striebig vertical panel saws,” says Dan. “Whilst I enjoy working with classical machinery, I get the most job satisfaction from installing and maintaining panel processing machinery as it can bring up more challenges. I thrive on finding solutions to problems and I get a real sense of pride when I finish a machinery install. I often stand back and think, I’ve made this five-tonne machine run as sweet as a nut. That’s pretty awesome. I’m sure it’s a feeling many engineers have but it doesn’t grow old.”
Meet Ashleigh Wheeler
TM Machinery's new Service Co-Ordinator
Mother to a cheeky five-year old daughter and a mischievous miniature dachshund called Nasha, Ashleigh joined the growing Leicester-based machinery distributor in November 2022 and has quickly become an integral part of TM’s Support Team.
Starting her working life as a chef, Ashleigh hung up her chef’s whites eight years later to become a project co-ordinator within the Biomass Boiler industry. Whilst the two roles could be considered as
different as chalk and cheese, her background as a chef stood her in good stead for the role. “
To be able to function well in a commercial kitchen, you need good time-management skills and the ability to prioritise,” explains Ashleigh. “Attention to detail is really important, as well as working effectively in a team. You also need a certain level of determination to get the job done, even when the going gets tough.”
If you’re yet to speak to Ashleigh, don’t let her quiet disposition fool you. Her strong work ethic, organisational ability and great communication skills make her a great fit and have seen her hit the ground running. Now part of a tightknit team and working closely with the Service Manager and spare parts division, Ashleigh is proving to be a great addition to the business.
Ashleigh says: “The camaraderie in the office makes it a great place to work. It speaks volumes that some people have been with the company for as long as 30 years. Being part of such a close team is something I really enjoy. We each have our own responsibilities and we’re all dedicated to doing a good job - it makes a huge difference.”

Timber growth to be represented at FIT Show 2023
It’s less than five months until FIT Show returns to the NEC for its ten year anniversary edition (May 23rd-25th, 2023.) Over the last decade, FIT Show has firmly established itself as the number one event for the UK glass, glazing, windows, doors, hardware and components industry.
The UK timber window market has demonstrated significant growth since 2014, which saw an uplift of 17.9% to 739,000 frames, and by 25.4% to £439 million in installed value* (Palmer Report).
It is anticipated that this growth is set to continue, although stalled slightly by global supply chain issues and the economic impact of COVID.
This growth is reflected by the representation of timber products at FIT Show. What started out as a predominantly UPVC trade show has evolved significantly to become a full showcase of the very best timber, aluminium, UPVC and composite products on the market.
Supported by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF), the FIT Show 2023 line-up includes brands such as Metsawood, one
of Europe’s leading manufacturers of engineered wood products, and timber window and door manufacturers Gowercroft and AB Staliu Gaminiai.
For brands who are looking to engage with builders, installers, specifiers and fabricators of timber products, FIT Show provides access to every link in the supply chain, all under one roof across three days. One third of the people who visited FIT Show in 2022were specifically seeking composite and timber solutions.
According to FIT Show organiser Montgomery, here’s why FIT Show 2023 should be an essential fixture in your business calendar this year:
“FIT Show is UK’s only dedicated industry event for this sector.
“FIT Show is the UK’s only dedicated event for the fenestration industry. Exhibiting at FIT Show will give you access to a projected audience of 10,000 installers, builders, fabricators, specifiers, architects and local authorities all looking to find the latest products and innovations.
“FIT Show has evolved to become much more than a windows and doors event. Alongside the show’s core UPVC, aluminium, timber and hardware line up, FIT Show has introduced new features for outdoor living related products, lifting equipment and so much more.
“When FIT Show returns this May, it will be ten years since the show was launched. This is your chance to help celebrate ten years since the launch of FIT Show, and a decade of being the UK’s number one trade show for the glass, glazing, hardware and components industry.
“For brands looking to unlock the power of exhibiting at FIT Show, the sooner you sign up to exhibit, the sooner you can start benefiting from the huge marketing machine that powers FIT Show. Our
dedicated in-house team of experts are on hand to help your business get the best possible ROI out of exhibiting.
“The statistics speak for themselves: it costs 22% less to contact a potential buyer at a show than through traditional channels; over 90% of attendees plan to purchase in the next 12-15 months of visiting a show; and 86% of exhibition attendees have not been seen before by your sales force.
“After FIT Show 2023 this May, there will be no show until 2025. Can you afford to leave a two year gap before engaging with the market, en masse at FIT Show?
As a visitor, can you wait a full two years before seeing and comparing the latest products on the market, side-by-side?
“Already over 85% of space has now been allocated and 20% of the FIT Show 2023 line-up is made up of brands who are completely new to FIT Show. If you are thinking about exhibiting, it’s likely that your competitors are going to be there. And if you’ve visited before, but think there won’t be anything new to see, the line-up includes a wide breadth of launch brands who are lining up to show you the very latest products and innovations.”
For visitors, the FIT Show is free to attend and registration is already open.

HOMAG’s CENTATEQ P-310 delivers versatility and quality for Fineline Joinery Fineline doors and windows produced on the HOMAG CENTATEQ P-310 Installations 12
Fineline Traditional Joinery operates out of purpose built premises in Petworth, West Sussex. A family run business with a turnover of £1.5 million, it has grown from two people in 1990 to a team of 14 craftsmen and women. The Fineline team produces bespoke items from fitted kitchens and bedroom furniture, to bookshelves, staircases, windows and doors.
All the company’s joinery can be fully factory sprayed and is finished to the highest quality.
“Our business is all about producing the finest made-to-order joinery,” enthuses Fineline Traditional Joinery’s founder and managing director, Stephen Casebow. He continues, “Using our CAD design software we can create exactly what each customer is looking for, whether that’s a traditional garden room, a contemporary staircase or period windows and doors.
“To create this broad range of products we employ a mix of experienced traditional joiners working in tandem with the latest CNC woodworking machinery. This powerful combination gives us the flexibility to competitively produce a wide variety of first class joinery.
“It was back in 2004 when we invested in our first CNC from HOMAG, a WEEKE BMG four-axis model. At the time it transformed our business, however, time marches on and we felt we needed to upgrade to a modern five-axis CNC which would allow us to take advantage of the latest technologies and software.”
Evaluating options
“Once we had done our homework on the different brands available, we approached three machinery manufacturers to provide us with a quote for a suitable CNC processing centre. Quote wise, there wasn’t a great deal in it, but we narrowed the choice down to HOMAG and one other.
“Our due diligence on the HOMAG machine
included visiting a door manufacturer in Farnham who was already running a CENTATEQ five-axis CNC machine. The visit was interesting and useful, providing the opportunity to not only see first hand the CNC in action, but also talk to the operators to get their thoughts and opinions on the performance and ease of use of the machine.
“At the end of the day, the decision to purchase a HOMAG CENTATEQ P-310 came down to three key benefits – the excellent track record HOMAG has, the ability to easily transfer all the programmes from the old CNC to the new one and our operators knowledge and experience of working with HOMAG’s woodWOP control software.
“Underlying these advantages were the superb build quality of the P-310, its functionality and broad range of options such as the laser positioning aid for clamping workpieces.”
Bringing versatility and accuracy to the business
”From the outset, the CENTATEQ P-310 has delivered accurate, versatile machining. Because we specialise in bespoke joinery, quite a lot of our work involves curved work pieces alongside windows and doors with very similar elements. This means we can create programmes that we can use on every window of a similar type or door of a similar type.
“We could do a lot with the four-axis machine, but this new CNC takes things to a whole new level. Our operators like working on the P-310; it’s much more user friendly, its just an easier machine to use in lots of ways. We send our CAD designs straight down from the office to the CNC and we can machine from that, something we couldn’t do with the old system.
“For the way that we work, which is low volume manufacture, The CENTATEQ P-310 is versatile and we can utilise lots of different applications.
Homag’s impressive CENTATEQ P-310 delivers accurate, versatile machining
So we can go seamlessly from producing a staircase, to Gothic arches for a church, to intricate elements of an orangery.”
Installation and training
“When you consider the supply chain issues affecting manufacturers worldwide, the installation process went smoothly, with potential delays communicated clearly and in a timely manner. The installation engineers were professional and friendly; Alan Clayton who trained our team did an excellent job. We also sent our operators on a week’s course at HOMAG’s Castle Donington head office.
“All this meant that we were able to go live with the new CNC very quickly. It is much easier and quicker to set up than the previous machine; you can change the parameters which allows you to infinitely change any separate programmes. You can then just put in sub-programmes which enable less trained operators to run the machine.
“Overall, the new CENTATEQ P-310 is simply more versatile and faster than the original fouraxis model. The first job we did on the P-310 was a curved set of architrave which would have taken us the best part of a day on the old CNC. With the new machine it was completed in a couple of hours. Consequently, my gut feeling is that the CENTATEQ P-310 CNC will pay for itself within a couple of years.
“Ultimately, I like dealing with HOMAG. Generally though, we only speak to them when we have a problem to solve. It’s reassuring to know, however, that they’re always at the end of a phone ready and eager to find a solution to an issue,” concludes Casebow.

Insulation business buys wood waste heater to save money on heating bills
UK Insulations Ltd, a Lancashire business that supplies electrical insulation materials and flexible films, has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating bills.
UKi was founded in 1997 and has become an industry leader in its marketplace. The business had always relied on gas heaters to warm its factory in Belthorn on
cold winter days, until it hit a snag when it found out it needed to spend £25,000 to upgrade its gas supply, or find an alternative option.
Director, Cliff Hartshorn decided to look into some alternative options, including finding out more about the wood waste heaters that he’d been hearing positive reviews on, so he contacted Wood Waste Technology.
Cliff says: “Once I found out more about wood waste heaters, investing
in one seemed the obvious solution to help us reduce our reliance on gas and get free heating to keep our 35 employees warm. Although we don’t generate much wood waste internally, we calculated that we’d still save money even if we ended up buying in some wood to burn! We’d have had no return on the investment if we’d have chosen the £25,000 gas-pipe upgrade route, but we’ll start to get an instant return from the wood waste heater because of the money it will be saving the business on heating!”
Following a site survey and review, a WT10 heater was purchased and installed earlier this year by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.
Cliff says: “We’ve been very impressed with the heater. Our 36,000 sq ft workshop is sectioned up into areas, and the engineers installed the wood waste heater in our small warehouse area, which works brilliantly as it heats the other areas too. Although we don’t manufacture with wood, so don’t have too much of our own wood to burn, it hasn’t been a problem. There are many broken pallets that we can use, and there’s plenty of wood available. We’re delighted to have reduced our reliance on gas for heating the factory, especially as the price of energy has increased so dramatically. We love how easy the wood waste heater is to use, and the on-going maintenance with it is so minimal. I just wish we’d bought one sooner!”
Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says: “Although most of our customers generate their own wood waste to burn, it’s great to hear
that our heaters are still appealing to other businesses in industries that don’t predominantly deal in wood manufacturing, and can still save those businesses money.”
Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.
In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.

“Although most of our customers generate their own wood waste to burn, it’s great to hear that our heaters are still appealing to other businesses in industries that don’t predominantly deal in wood manufacturing, and can still save those businesses money”
Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology
“Once I found out more about wood waste heaters, investing in one seemed the obvious solution to help us reduce our reliance on gas and get free heating to keep our 35 employees warm. Although we don’t generate much wood waste internally, we calculated that we’d still save money even if we ended up buying in some wood to burn!”

A place with chemistry: the new exhibition at the Deutsches Museum uses high-tech HIMACS walls
Over 10,000 exhibits at the Deutsches Museum in Munich attract around 1.5 million science and technology enthusiasts year on year. Hightech is a point of pride – and that is particularly obvious in the newly designed chemistry exhibition as well, with especially impressive HIMACS Solid Surface material walls that gleam in radiant Alpine White.
The newly designed chemistry exhibition is divided into three large sections, starting with historical laboratories from the Middle Ages, followed by an experimentation area with a hands-on lab and auditorium. The third section comprises a large exhibition hall with visually engaging stations that demonstrate the importance of chemistry in everyday life; from cosmetics and nutrition, to leisure, sport and construction.
The new permanent exhibition was planned by renowned architectural firm Ambos & Weidenhammer from Munich. The basic concept of the design is to cleanly divide the massive world of chemistry into individual stations separated by cylindrical walls. The layout allows visitors to concentrate on each station without being distracted. They do not need to have any prior scientific knowledge. Rather, the chemistry is explained in simple terms. Exhibits, text and interactive elements bring historical developments or modern products to life. Many of the exhibits are unique, like the famous nuclear fission table with original equipment. This is where Otto Hahn, Lise Meitner and Fritz Straßmann performed their experiments with uranium salts, leading to the first fission of an atomic nucleus in 1938.
The HIMACS design seamlessly follows the thematic concept
The individual stations and their cylindrical walls made of HIMACS Solid Surface material draw in visitors both aesthetically and with their interesting subject matter. Fascinating shapes routed into the double-walled structures invite visitors to immerse themselves in the molecular world of each station. The ability to see through to the other side sparks curiosity, drawing passers-by in to explore. The designs on the solid surface material walls are aligned to the respective theme of each station: for leisure and sport, for example, the walls feature an abstract microscopic image of plastic fibres, while for cosmetics, round, bubble-like shapes cover the
walls, reminiscent of a foam bath. Especially noteworthy is the nutrition station, which has the microscopic structure of an eggshell on its walls, a surface that could not be finer, more surprising or complex. It was a real challenge for the Solid Surface material and its workmanship. The implementation called for specialists: for this project, it was Körling Interiors GmbH & Co. KG from Dortmund, who worked with Georg Ackermann GmbH from Wiesenbronn to bring the HIMACS Solid Surface material into the right form.
‘We really enjoyed the project,’ says Joachim Lutz, Commercial Project Manager at Georg Ackermann GmbH. ‘It called for much more than a standard solution. We relied on our expertise especially where the dimensions of the exhibition walls were concerned, both in terms of the design, programming and data preparation beforehand and the installation of the final elements on site.’ As usual, HIMACS made light work of even this project. The material is as durable as stone but as easy to work with as wood, allowing for extremely fine shapes to be routed cleanly into the exhibition walls with immaculate precision.
The Solid Surface material made of acrylic, minerals and pigments can be thermoformed into three-dimensional shapes, creating smooth,
non-porous, seamless surfaces and meeting even the highest standards of aesthetics, durability and hygiene. That is why many renowned architects, like Zaha Hadid and David Chipperfield, rely on HIMACS in their projects. DIN and EN standard certificates also confirm the low flammability of HIMACS, making the solid surface material ideal for use in public spaces like museums, where fire safety takes high priority. Moreover, many of the HIMACS colours meet the Oddy test criteria, which is crucial in the museum sector, especially for display cases that hold sensitive or historical exhibits.
The result is impressive, as the exhibition curator Susanne Rehn-Taube reports. ‘The design with its semi-enclosed stations proves a hit during tours. Visitors and museum experts like the modern interpretation of chemistry. They praise the unique design, which is really shaped by the cylindrical walls.’
The exhibition will certainly last quite a while. After all, HIMACS is especially durable and long-lasting, making it ideal for spaces with lots of public visitors and heavy use. What looks great now will continue to look great in future. And that remains true for more than just the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

Specialist office furniture manufacturer sees capacity increase 40% with HOMAG machinery
Staverton (UK) Ltd has been making quality furniture since 1928. Today it is known for solving clients’ workspace challenges with innovative design, quality craftsmanship and unbeatable customer service. The company’s 60-strong work force is based in its 26,000 sq ft manufacturing plant in Rotherham. Staverton also has a prestigious London showroom in Clerkenwell where the sales team is based.
“The foundation of our business has always been built on innovation, quality and first class service,” explains Staverton’s operations director, Ian Samuel. He continues, “The woodworking machinery we’ve invested in over the years is one of the cornerstone of the business. We have been buying HOMAG equipment for over 20 years and today our manufacturing facility is 100 percent HOMAG.
“As the world slowly emerged from the COVID crisis we began to question what the best strategy would be to grow the business. Whilst many manufacturers looked to take cost out of their operations, we decided to be more bullish and invest in our factory to give us more capability and capacity.
“We believed this positive approach would
provide a better proposition to take to the market in the post-COVID, post-Brexit period, particularly with our OEM (original equipment manufacturers) customers.”
HOMAG – renowned as the best in the world
“With the decision to invest in new machinery made, we turned our attention to finding the best machine manufacturer to partner with. Although we had a long-standing history with HOMAG, we evaluated two other Italian manufacturers before making the final decision. “Obviously, machine build quality is a very important factor in the purchasing process for new equipment. However, whilst HOMAG is renowned as the best woodworking machinery brand in the world, we believe the key to making significant capital investments in machinery is the service levels the manufacturer can deliver. And ultimately, that was the deciding factor for us; HOMAG’s service levels, relative to the competition, remain far and away the best in the industry.
“Our HOMAG area manager, Alan Betteridge, is a key component in our relationship with the company. He understands our business and we can rely on him to be candid and give us
unbiased advice. Consequently, we briefed Alan on what we were looking to achieve with the new equipment and he helped us specify the right models.”
Improved capacity, capabilities and flexibility
”The existing HOMAG CNC machining centre had been a real asset for the business. We felt, however, it was vital to move with the times and take advantage of the changes taking place in the office furniture market. There was a shift from single work stations to larger meeting tables and so Alan recommended the 5-axis CENTATEQ E-310 to increase throughput, provide flexibility and improve our production capabilities, particularly of curved parts.
“To strengthen our inserting and drilling capacity Alan steered us towards the DRILLTEQ V-200 which has proved to be an excellent choice. For edge banding, he suggested the EDGETEQ S-300 with a LOOPTEQ O-300 automatic return system and XES 200 glue station. The S-300 edge bander is equipped with the latest airTec glue technology and this has proved to be a game-changer, eliminating any issues with the quality of the glue line.
“The LOOPTEQ return system and the

XES glue station have further improved our throughput speed. The LOOPTEQ system means the edge banding cell is now a one man operation. Meanwhile the glue station enables us to eliminate downtime associated with changing glue types and cleaning glue pots.”
Smooth, efficient installation and training
“The installation process for the machines went smoothly. Our production manager, Mark Powel, worked closely with Alan Betteridge and the team at HOMAG to coordinate everything. As a result, we were operational within ten days of the machines being delivered.
“In preparation for the installation of the new machines we sent three of our operators to HOMAG UK for a week’s training prior to delivery. The remainder of the training was done onsite in Rotherham by the HOMAG installation engineers and I have to say, they did an excellent job.
“We reckon the new machines will probably pay for themselves within a three-to-five year
window. What’s more important, however, is that the improved capabilities and delivery times have enabled us to grow our existing customer business. In addition, we are attracting new customers with the quality, flexibility and value for money we provide.
“By working closely together with HOMAG we have established a strong partnership which has enabled us to constructively work through any issues. All in all, we’re delighted with our new HOMAG machines. They have improved nearly every aspect of our manufacturing processes and increased our throughput by well over 40%. The consistent quality, particularly of the glue line, is fantastic and HOMAG’s service levels remain the best in the industry,” concludes Samuel.

Sustainable engineered wood panels from MEDITE SMARTPLY
Sustainable sourcing is on top of the global agenda in tackling emissions particularly within the construction and manufacturing industries. Furniture & Joinery Production caught up with to Rebecca Goldsmith, Product Manager MEDITE SMARTPLY to get their take on the dominant manufacturing issue of our age.
“As a market leading manufacturer of environmentally conscious engineered wood panels, commitment to sustainability is core to all levels of our business at MEDITE SMARTPLY; from our sustainably managed forests, to the manufacture of low embodied carbon materials, which contribute to sustainable building. This provides furniture makers and joiners great peace of mind when it comes to choosing the right materials for their project,” says Rebecca.
Working more sustainably
“As a company, we are endeavouring to become a recognised industry leading sustainable manufacturer through a number of ways. Firstly, it is our ambition to move towards carbon neutrality by 2030. Carbon neutrality refers to balancing emissions with removals before offsetting residual. We can do this through scope 1 (emissions that are direct from owned or controlled sources) & scope 2 (emissions that are indirect from purchased sources).
“Secondly, we aim to support our customers and partners to be able to demonstrate their reduced impact on the environment by 2030. Going forward, we plan to run customer workshops with chosen clients to identify areas where support can be given.
“Thirdly, we will also be working with
our suppliers to reduce our impact on the environment by 2030 (scope 3 – this covers all of the other indirect emissions throughout the company’s supply chain, including transport, purchased goods and use of products sold).
“Lastly, we are committed to being a net zero manufacturing company by 2050, reducing carbon emissions across our business and supply chains,” says Rebecca.
“Our business has been sourcing 100% green electricity since 2021, which has helped to further reduce our carbon impact. Currently, 95% of energy sourced by MEDITE SMARTPLY used across our direct operations is renewable.
Innovative MDF panels
MEDITE SMARTPLY’s environmentally conscious products ensure a sustainable building material, storing carbon throughout their lifetime. Sourced from their sustainably managed forests in Ireland, MEDITE SMARTPLY’s engineered wood panels are proof of their commitment to creating products that contribute to sustainable and healthier environments.
“Furniture makers and joiners can benefit from the durability and flexibility of engineered wood panels to meet the project aspirations of their clients,” says Rebecca. “The MEDITE MDF range includes MEDITE MR, a moisture resistant MDF panel designed for use in humid conditions, MEDITE PREMIER, a multi-purpose MDF ideal for furniture, shelving and domestic applications and for applications where flame retardance is required, there is MEDITE PREMIER FR.”
The range also includes MEDITE CLEAR, a MDF panel manufactured with no added formaldehyde, which has been developed specifically for environmentally sensitive interior applications such as nurseries, schools and museums.
“All MEDITE MDF products are also CARB2 compliant, which puts the brand at the forefront of ‘low formaldehyde’ innovation in Europe,” concludes Rebecca.

It’s all seamless at Starbank as ZEROedge® launches
Exciting times once again at leading panel fabricator Starbank as they launch their latest CNC shaped edgebanding machinery, part of their wider £2m investment plan for 2023.
Established in 1976, employing a 90 strong team, Starbank have always enjoyed very strong inward investment from their shareholders and their latest CNC purchase is no exception.
The company is replacing a Homag BAZ 723, installed in 2015, with the very latest Centateq E-700. Both machines are high-performance twin table, twin router gantry series CNC’s and the flagships within the Homag range. The 116,000 sq ft manufacturing facility currently houses 20 custom machines to handle laminate and panel fabrication from batch size 1 to batch size 10,000 and beyond.
Philip Darbyshire, Managing Director explains: “We took the critical decision with our replacement Centateq E-700 to invest in unique technology and upgrades that were not possible previously. Whilst our skilled production team will take full advantage of these upgrades, the ultimate benefit of these investments is for our customers who can now request a completely seamless edge to their own shaped panel components.”

“Starbank have been watching the market closely for many years with regards to the myriad of new surface and machinery technology available and are very excited and proud to launch their new ZEROedge® brand to the market”
Starbank has just replaced Homag’s BAZ 723 with the very latest Centateq E-700
Whether Melamine or HPL in composition the benefits are not only for high-end surface finishes, which really do deserve the ultimate edge, but also for basic components in challenging environments that require higher levels of hygiene and ease of cleaning.
The new machining centre will not only run the very latest Airtec system, but also the powerEdge Pro Duo edgebanding unit. This upgrade takes CNC edge gluing to a whole new level with superior butt banding, trimming and software innovation providing higher accuracy and quality.
When using the ZEROedge® system this can create a bond equal to or greater than PUR (no delamination ).
The Airtec system uses highly compressed hot air that effectively welds the functional layer on the edgebanding directly to the board. This system does not require the use of a traditional adhesive layer between the board and the tape, drastically improving the visual appearance of the part with additional benefits in exceptional heat and water resistance. Effectively, there is no place for any dirt to accumulate over time and use.
This new technology will finally be complimented towards the end of Q1 when Starbank take delivery of their new Homag S-800 Edgebanding Cell which will run a Lasertec system for straight line edgebanding.
Starbank explain they have been watching the market closely for many years with regards to the myriad of new surface and machinery technology available and are very excited and proud to launch their new ZEROedge® brand to the market:
“There is absolutely no doubt that the market demand for higher quality components is a constant requirement, and we are addressing both current and future needs for many years to come with our latest investments. As an OEM manufacturer, we are upgrading a great number of parts and products for our customers which can only be a good thing,” concludes Philip. Expressive Woodgrains from EGGER
EGGER UK’s Design Manager, Aimee Fletcher, explains how woodgrains can express personality in modular design, as consumers search for a more sustainable look.
“A clear trend that defined 2022 was sustainability. With consumers becoming more conscious of their environmental impact, we have seen this movement emerge in the furniture and interior design market when it comes to décor selection.
Consumers are bringing the outdoors in, by introducing natural and authentic elements into interiors. Whether it be at home, work, or in public spaces, it is clear that a calm, natural environment creates a more relaxed atmosphere that feels closer to nature.
A mix-and-match approach to design supports the transition toward more natural reproductions. This became apparent during the pandemic when people started living in a modular way. However, people still want to create impact, and adding a natural, yet powerful Expressive Woodgrain makes for a striking interior element. We have responded to this demand by
introducing a selection of Expressive Woodgrain reproductions that offer the desired natural and authentic finish. This is in addition to our extensive, international EGGER Decorative Collection. The new décors are perfectly suited to create designs that have impact and can be used for feature walls or units, adding a focal point to the room.

Reliable life-long ‘ConfidentClose’ soft closing is assured by the use of the renowned TITUS single-direction precision engineered hydraulic dampers, which smoothly slow down the linear movement of the drawer as it reaches the closed position but offer minimal resistance to movement when the drawer is being opened.
Installation of the drawers within the cabinet is fast and straightforward. Extended tolerances in cabinet construction can be accommodated without compromising accurate alignment, smooth and silent operation and excellent stability in the open position. In addition, variations of up to ±1mm in bottom panel width size are acceptable.

Blum has home organisation sorted as ‘storage’ tops social media searches
As more and more consumers look to social media for interior inspiration and ideas, it seems that kitchen storage comes out on top (Research by Magnet Trade). From TikTok and Instagram to YouTube and Google, #kitchenorganisation and #kitchenstorage are some of the most popular hashtags with users searching for the best and most innovative ways to clear the clutter, create more space and give rooms a calm, orderly feel.
“Watching reels, shorts and videos of a wellorganised drawer or cupboard being achieved also taps in to the trend for an autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), a relaxed feel for the senses that viewers can experience when watching,” says Amanda Hughes, Blum Expert for Ergonomics at Blum UK.
Blum knows all about organisation with its precision engineered fittings, drawer runners, pull-outs and lift systems that allow for flexible and space-saving storage in not just kitchens but living spaces, bedrooms, children’s rooms, bathrooms, hallways and home offices too.

Cutting-edge trimming technology boosts productivity and quality
Biesse’s IT70 linear edge trimming unit is now available on the Akron 1400 edgebander as Biesse cascades down its top level technologies throughout its range, giving mid-sized operations the opportunity to achieve the optimal finish that is usually the preserve of large capacity machines.
Edgebanding, Materials & Technology 48
For many years, the industry standard for trimming excess edging tape, so it is flush with the panel, has involved a process that incorporates two inclined motors. These track the panel at a 45° angle to ensure a clean and accurate cut.
Adopting a linear approach
Biesse says its IT70 technology represents a quantum leap forward versus this method, both in terms of quality and productivity.
The unit was originally engineered to work with high performance edgebanding machines, where precision and speed are paramount, and employs a completely different trimming technique. Instead of using a frictional copier that slides down the front and back edge of the panel, on the IT70, the saw follows the length of the panel horizontally and uses reference points to locate the panel as it travels before cutting the edge tape.
According to Biesse, there are two key advantages with this technique: firstly there is no friction between the panel and copiers – the saw simply locates the panel and cuts off the
overhang. This results in a superior finish by preventing the problem of witness marks being left on the panel. Secondly, it reduces the gap between each panel, which allows more panels on a machine at the same time. Productivity can be improved by 30% in some cases.
The Biesse advantage
Whilst other manufacturers have a linear option within their portfolios, Biesse says its IT70 leads the pack in terms of its price:performance ratio claiming superior engineering and the use of the latest
technologies such as linear guides make for a unit that guarantees unrivalled longevity and reliability. The IT70 is available in both servo and pneumatic configurations.
The unit can be supplied with a numerical control (NC) guide system for automatic offset adjustment. This feature is particularly useful to accommodate edge tapes from different suppliers as their thickness dimensions can vary. Without this, the operator would need to manually reset the machine to accommodate for the variation in tape thickness.

Outsourcing manufacturer continuously invests to achieve top quality output
Based in Dewbury, West Yorkshire, GB Projects Ltd have been an outsourcing partner to the commercial furniture manufacturing industry since 1973.
The personal creation of brothers David and Geoffrey Burrows, the company now known as GB Projects was conceptualised in 1973 following their time spent converting a former Royal Navy lifeboat into a gaff-rigged sailing cutter. They found the renovation such an enjoyable and rewarding success, the duo decided to put their skills to use full time. D & G Joinery was formed thanks to joiner David and engineer Geoffrey’s efforts and sometime later in 2000, after the firm had gone from strength to strength, it was incorporated as GB Projects.
The business has remained in the family, and, much to their pride, continues to grow and is now run by Geoffrey and his son Edward.
“We are a quality-driven manufacturer that supplies high-specification projects for almost any industry,” says Geoffrey. “Proudly made in Great Britain, we work alongside designers, architects and other manufacturers to produce a whole host of products using our wide range of manufacturing capabilities.
“We offer an extensive range of in-house manufacturing services and work with both small and large manufacturers that outsource processes including CNC machining, laminating, veneering, spray painting, assembly and edgebanding.
“Over recent years, we have invested heavily in our factory including an automated spray line, five-axis CNC’s and a PUR edgebander. With our new edgebander, we are now able to offer high volume, quality edge banding on a wide range of applications.
“We edge in materials including ABS, acrylic, veneers and solid timber, and use edging tape thicknesses from 0.4mm up to 15mm solid wood lippings. In terms of adhesives, we work with PUR glue which offers an incredibly strong and waterproof bond between the panel and edging whilst achieving an almost invisible glue line –perfect for our laminated panels, MDF, MFC, solid edge boardroom tables and even fire doors.

Some pieces become classics –often with edges supplied by Heitz
Why do some furniture pieces become succesful classics around the world? Product characteristics like design, material, and function play a key role. Appearance, feel, and function are decisive criteria for customers when they make a purchase. If the piece is practical, easy to assemble, and versatile as well, it is likely to become a popular and classic choice.
Veneer edgings are key details, and not to be underestimated.Heitz has made a name for itself around the world as a veneer edge specialist, and is a global market leader based on sales and turnover. Little wonder then that global furniture brands appreciate the level of quality Heitz is able to deliver. The company, with its headquarters in Melle, Germany, maintains sites in the USA and Hungary, proving that companies can build a strong international profile even in niche markets.
Heitz, however, can handle more than just large production series for major furniture companies and is also working with customers who need specialised solutions, including small production runs.
No matter the material requirements or
finishing needs, designers and manufacturers should reach out to Heitz – and of course Heitz themselves are always looking for a new challenge, and ready to develop innovative, custom solutions.
Heitz considers unique or exclusive requirements to be an opportunity to advance its company’s technological capabilities and expand a range of services.

ABS Edgings to the new Kronospan collection – already available at Ostermann
Right on time for the launch of the Kronodesign Global Collection 3.0, Ostermann has the matching edgings in stock. All new products were developed in close cooperation between Ostermann and Kronospan.
Furniture makers can now find at Ostermann the matching edgings for the new Kronodesign Global Collection 3.0 by Kronospan. The new collection comprises 154 melaminecoated particle boards, 68 worktops and 24 design-oriented ‘avant-garde’ surfaces and is characterised by wood, stone and textile décors with a matt look and plain décors in soft trend colours. Ostermann has developed the matching
edgings early on and in close cooperation between the design experts of both companies. In no time, they developed a perfectly tuned edging collection with 200 colours and décors, which is now available directly from their own warehouse. All items can be ordered in any width up to 100mm. The typical Ostermann service means they are dispatched in small quantities from 1m, and if you place your order before 4pm, on the same day. All information on the new edgings for Kronospan décors can be found by typing in the search item “#KronodesignGlobal” at the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu.
Eye-catching décors
Among the new surfaces you can find the whole range of décors: from wood and stone to metal and textile reproductions. The embossing of the new wood décors rounds off their natural look by adding a tactile dimension that enhances the realistic appearance. Many of them have a matt surface finish. Among the oak décors traditionally well represented, two surfaces with delicate strands in tin look stand out. In addition, walnut and pine reproductions are on the advance. Harmonious textile reproductions in neutral basic colours and well combinable stone reproductions in marble and granite look complement the range of decor surfaces. A focus point in the development of the assigned edgings was to pick up the board decor’s typical elements and harmoniously optimise them for use on the edging.
Matt
Plain Décors in Soft Colours
When it comes to uni décors, the new soft colours with trend potential catch the eye. Surface finishes such as Toffee (warm maize yellow) or Marshmallow (tender pink) get you in the mood to try something new in interior design. Colours such as Smoke Green or Azure Blue are somewhat more classic variations, although they are not dazzling and loud either but still go rather in the direction of warm, pastel shades. A majority of the new products features a pleasant and soft matt surface.

VENEER ABS PAINTABLE ACRYLIC
Talking Micro Emissions PUR adhesives
In this article, we discuss PUR Micro Emissions adhesives with Steve Morrow, Technical Sales & UK Sales Manager at Kenyon Group, one of the country’s foremost adhesives suppliers.
Having spent more than 40 years supplying adhesives and solving adhesive problems in many markets from packaging and automotive to woodworking and building components, the Kenyon team and myself are always considering new ways of how we can improve the customer’s experience with Henkel products.
Micro Emission technologies play a key role when it comes to improving the safety for operators, creating a safer environment at work, and also protecting the planet.
Over the years, I had a chance to witness how the furniture, woodworking and building components markets have made significant progress in reducing the risk from isocyanates. Conventional PUR-Hotmelt adhesives once contained 2-5% of monomeric Methylene diphenyl diisocyanates (MDI), which led to them being classified as carcinogenic. Over the years, the residual monomeric MDI has been continuously reduced, resulting in much safer products.
The legislation according to REACH regarding the handling of diisocyanates will change on 24th August 2023
The industry benchmark for these ‘lowemission’ polyurethanes was previously 1% isocyanate content (or to be more precise, ‘low
monomer MDI’). ‘Low emission’ may sound appealing, but the risk is still there, and there are associated regulatory requirements, such as specific labelling, training, and infrastructure.
But the good news is that innovations and improving technologies mean we can push the boundaries even further without compromising product performance. We are now able to reduce the isocyanate concentration to below 0.1% which is an outstanding team effort.
It is time to act now and change to Technomelt Micro Emissions (ME) PUR adhesives.
That said, it truly acts as a threshold for what’s known as a Micro Emission (ME) product. At this level, the product is recognised as safe – meaning no hazardous labelling and no mandatory training for operators.
Therefore, this ME technology has taken off since its introduction, and the term has become the standard across the market with manufacturers in the UK and across Europe.
Adhesives & Cleaners 58
What are the benefits of ME adhesive products?
We at Kenyon’s focus on the operator’s health. With this product group, the emission of isocyanate is reduced to a level that makes it indistinguishable in the air. This means operators do not need to worry about sensitisation, and manufacturers do not need to go through expensive compliance projects and training or install new exhaust systems. Remember, ME PUR adhesives have no warning labels, it’s time to change!
Simply put, ME products function in the same way as traditional PUR products. Customers do not need to worry about loss of performance. In fact, in some cases, the ME product will be more stable than conventional PUR technology, or it will have fewer cleaning requirements whether you are edgebanding, flat laminating or profile wrapping, PUR ME is the future.
How can manufacturers switch to ME technologies successfully?
Our customers often ask me if switching from traditional PUR to ME is difficult. It’s not. Processes and equipment will not need to be changed, since the chemistry is the same: a reactive system. Enjoy all the benefits associated with PUR adhesives low coat weight, tight joints, invisible glue lines, exceptional high performance combined with excellent heat and water resistance but without the hazardous labelling, making it more environmentally friendly and safer for operators to handle.
Nobody likes warning labels and the fact that we can now eliminate this has huge benefits … As with any transition, I highly advise working with an experienced partner like Kenyon’s to manage all kinds of situations. At Kenyon’s, we pride ourselves on having long-term experience with ME technologies, as we have been working with these products since they were first brought to market. We can offer technical service and support analysis with tailored training materials. In addition to that, there’s an entire department within Henkel dedicated purely to dealing with regulatory issues and making sure to support our customers in their transitions to call upon for further advice.
It looks like Kenyon’s are the complete adhesive package … We say that our safety journey has no expiration date. What I love about working as Henkel Premium Partner the most is that we are always striving to improve the safety and prosperity of our customers and our end consumers.

Water-based adhesive solutions for foam bonding
Based in Aldridge in the West Midlands, Chemique UK is a leader in the manufacture and supply of high performance industrial adhesives and adhesive application equipment, offering specialist bonding solutions to industries including construction, transport, marine and commercial production.
The company’s ProAqua brand is a range of water-based sprayable adhesives, and their distinct qualities have made it a popular choice in the foam and furniture industry, including foam converting, upholstery, mattress manufacturing, soft furnishings, and automotive seating.
Each adhesive in the range has been specially formulated to adhere to a wide range of substrates including foam, cloth, polyester fibre, wood, plastics, and metals.
The range consists of one and two component water-based adhesives, whereby the active component of the adhesive uses water as the carrier.
Once the adhesive has been applied, it is through water loss from either evaporation or absorption that the adhesive strength is fully released.
Advantages of ProAqua water-based adhesives
ProAqua adhesives share many common advantages. They are solvent-free, therefore do not release any VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and although extraction is required when spraying adhesives, once filtered, the air can be recirculated following to the removal of particulates.
ProAqua adhesives are easy to store, and as long as they are not allowed to freeze, they can
be safely kept in ambient conditions. As the adhesives are water-based, application equipment is easy to clean and maintain, as any wet adhesive can be cleaned using water rather than harsh solvents.
ProAqua 1 – one component water-based adhesive
The ProAqua range includes a one component water-based adhesive that works due to the colloid being broken down through shear forces in the spray nozzle. These forces can be controlled by changing the amount of atomising air and adhesive.
Specialist equipment is not required as ProAqua 1 can be applied using a pressure pot and spray gun or by simply being gravity fed,
which requires the vessel holding the adhesive to be at least 1.5m above where it is being applied. This type of adhesive and application method is popular in foam fabrication and the mattress market, as benefits include a soft glue line, excellent heat resistance and fast application.
ProAqua 2 – two component water-based adhesive
The ProAqua range includes a two component water-based adhesive, which features a second component, often called the activator or part B, that forces the polymer out of the water. The activator is sprayed directly into the atomised spray of the part A during application. This adhesive exhibits the softest of bond lines and has high initial tack. It is ideal for a variety of foam types/densities and can hold difficult to bond substrates in place, even under high tension.

Both one- and two-component ProAqua adhesives can be easily applied – ProAqua 1 requires very little equipment, aside from the spray gun and the adhesive, which can be gravity fed. ProAqua 2 adhesives generally bond to more substrates, provide stronger bonds, and have higher initial tack.
Depending on what the substrates are to be bonded will determine which product to choose but Chemique’s technical team is able to offer specialist advice in choosing the ideal adhesive for your application.

Adhesives for edgebanding
Edge bonding or edge banding is an important process in the production of boards and panels for the manufacturing of furniture or furniture elements and door panels. In order to achieve durable and high-quality edge bonding, PUR adhesives are usually used, which have a particularly high resistance to extreme temperatures but also to water (vapour) and solvents.
Other hot-melt adhesives, such as those based on ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) or polyolefin hot-melt adhesives, only have a purely physical adhesion, whereas PUR adhesives undergo chemical cross-linking with the water molecules in the air. This represents an irreversible bonding process that thus meets special requirements in terms of strength, water and heat resistance as well as chemical resistance. In addition, reactive PUR hotmelt adhesives have a wide adhesion spectrum that allows them to form strong chemical bonds with the surfaces of a wide variety of materials. For edge banding, all common plastic edges (PVC, PP, ABS, melamine) as well as veneer but also aluminium strips can be bonded.
PUR adhesives for edgebanding are available in various packaging sizes. From small bags with PUR in granulate form for carpenters and joiners as well as craftsmen’s workshops and furniture manufacturers who work with mobile edge banding devices or simple edge banding machines, to 2kg adhesive candles and 20kg slugs or 200kg drums for industrial mass production with special melting systems. All reactive PUR adhesives are delivered in airtight protective packaging to prevent premature cross-linking.
Important product properties
In the development of PUR adhesives for edgebanding, TAKA has focused on the highest quality and excellent product properties, which guarantee process-safe processing and longlasting bonding. The joint quality depends on a multitude of different factors.
The quality requirements of end customers are constantly increasing, because they expect a visually flawless product with appealing and innovative décors. In edgebanding, this includes producing an almost invisible and perfect adhesive joint between the edgeband and the panel side. The ideal is the so-called zero joint, which is invisible to the naked eye between the panel surface and the edgeband material. It has the practical advantage that no dirt settles in this joint during everyday use and it therefore remains invisible. TAKA offers PUR hot-melt adhesives with different colourings for this purpose, which can be selected according to the colouring of the materials used in order to avoid colour contrasts between the material and the adhesive.
The growing demands of customers also include resistance to wear and tear and knocks on furniture and doors. Therefore, edgebands with material thicknesses of up to 3mm are used to protect the panel edges. For this reason, the adhesive used in processing must have outstanding initial adhesion in order to counteract the material memory of the stiff edgebands and to bond them successfully and permanently to the panel side.
It is also important that the reactive PUR adhesive does not cross-link prematurely in the glue pot. This leads to increased viscosity in the initial stage and subsequently to skin
formation, which can clog the glue pot as well as the application head. TAKA adhesives are characterised by excellent stability in the glue pot, so that the formation of an adhesive skin on the surface is avoided even during temporary production stops or low adhesive consumption. For process-reliable and clean processing of the hotmelt adhesive during edge banding, socalled “string” formation must also be prevented. Lower-quality adhesives draw adhesive ‘strings’ between the application head and the panel side, which then contaminate the edgebanding unit and the processed panel with adhesive residue and thus significantly impair the quality of the end product.
Soft-forming
In modern furniture design, new shapes and décors are constantly being developed that place new demands on production processes. One trend for doors, fronts and drawers is so-called soft-forming. In this process, edge bands are glued to moulded panel or profile sides, resulting in new and modern shapes, such as different profile forms (L-profile, S-profile, U-profile, etc). Handle-less drawers and kitchen fronts (J-pull) are particularly popular.
Label-free PUR hot-melt adhesives
Besides the traditional PUR adhesives for edge bonding, TAKA also has a so-called ‘micro-emission’ or ‘low monomer’ adhesive in its range. The content of free monomeric isocyanate in this product is less than 0.1% by weight and is therefore not subject to labelling according to the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances. Therefore, this adhesive is not subject to the restrictions for the safe handling of isocyanates and can be used without additional safety training courses. For more advice on lamination, send an email to the WPR-TAKA Academy for more information: academy@wprtaka.it or contact Anthony Rook from BRIT-AD LTD.

HOMAG’s SAWTEQ B-130 and B-200 entry level beam saws punch above their weight
The HOMAG Group, the world’s leading provider of integrated production solutions for the woodworking industry, offers a comprehensive range of panel dividing beam saws. Panel saws help to process work with greater flexibility, speed and efficiency. The company’s selection of beam saws offers both woodworking shops and industrial customers precision finish cuts for every type of woodbased or plastic panel material.
The smallest HOMAG panel dividing saw, the SAWTEQ B-130, is competitively priced compared to a well-equipped table saw. The B-130, however, provides a much more precise, efficient and fast cutting process. Its compact footprint, sturdy design and proven technologies consistently deliver exceptional results.
Speed, quality and precision during the cutting process can only be achieved if panel materials are moved quickly, gently and with a high level of accuracy. The SAWTEQ B-130 includes technologies that smoothly interact with one another, from the program fence and pressure beam to the clamps and patented side pressure device.
Power Concept Classic for higher performance and throughput
The innovative Power Concept Classic is available on both the SAWTEQ B-130 and SAWTEQ B-200. At the heart of this technology is a clamp on the program fence that can be moved separately; It also moves in front of the program fence if necessary. The clamp enables two strips with different cross cut divisions to be cut to length simultaneously.
This feature significantly increases output and makes it easy to handle peaks in production. In addition, an algorithm adapted to the Power Concept Classic automatically sorts the strips directly at the saw blade.
State-of-the-art control system
Both the SAWTEQ B-130 and B-200 utilise HOMAG’s CADmatic 5 high performance saw control system. With a wide range of functions, CADmatic 5 is an intuitive operating concept with clear administrative functions. What’s more, it is open for communication with other machines and software solutions thus enabling manufacturing cells to be created.
Another feature available on both the B-130 and B-200 SAWTEQ models is HOMAG’s innovative operator assistance system, intelliGuide. The Classic version features an LED strip at the cutting line which guides the operator by means of light signals.
Using the coloured LED elements, machine operators can immediately see if a part has been fully processed, needs to be cut again or can be disposed of as waste. Based on which LEDs are lit up, the operator can also determine whether the workpiece being processed meets the required specifications.
The intelliGuide system provides completely intuitive machine operation that verifiably leads to significantly shorter throughput times, resulting in error-free increased output. The operator and saw work in tandem and no longer slow each other down.
Efficient use of resources
Energy, time, materials and people are all precious resources. Conserving them increases productivity, saving costs and the planet.
HOMAG’s ecoPlus technologies help achieve

up to 30% reduction in energy consumption. EcoPlus reduces CO2 emissions and protects the environment, a practical tool in the move towards becoming carbon neutral.
SAWTEQ B-200 – a saw that grows with your needs
With its power, precision and flexibility, HOMAG’s SAWTEQ B-200 offers everything a woodworking facility needs to cut panels horizontally. There are two standard models – one with a lifting table, the other without –that can be enhanced with a wide range of technology options. These enable customers to customise a saw to their particular production requirements whilst remaining flexible for future growth needs.
Like its smaller sister machine, the B-130, the SAWTEQ B-200 is controlled by CADmatic 5, HOMAG’s high performance saw control system. It also features the next generation user interface, powerTouch2. This enables faster, clearer and easier control of the saw. The innovative touch operation is designed to enable users to get the desired results quickly and easily.
When equipped with an integrated lifting table,
it provides program controlled feeding from the rear. This is significantly more ergonomic, faster and more efficient than solely feeding manually from the front.
Commenting on HOMAG’s entry level beam saws, Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s managing director said: “In the past there has, perhaps, been a perception that beam saws are a luxury many smaller woodworking manufacturers cannot afford.
“Our entry level beam saws have resigned such beliefs to history. Both the SAWTEQ B-130 and B-200 models not only offer exceptional value for money, but also provide huge production efficiency and quality benefits.
“If you haven’t seen these saws in operation, I highly recommend you arrange a visit to our showroom in Castle Donington for a demonstration. I am confident you won’t be disappointed and it could be the start of a new chapter in your own business development.”
For a demonstration or more information on the entry level SAWTEQ B-130 and B-200 beam saws or other HOMAG machinery and software solutions, contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

New heating distribution methods for warm air systems
Chris Franklin, Managing Director at Ranheat Engineering Ltd, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of Industrial wood-waste burning equipment. Continues his series of articles exclusively for Furniture & Joinery production. This month he looks at new heating distribution systems for industrial wood fired heaters as opposed to boilers.
Despite record high temperatures for January 2023, with many French Alpine ski resorts being forced to close, how we heat our factories in the UK wood-working industry is still a prime concern.
The best way to save money on energy is to use less in the first place. But within our industry there exists special requirements for making things from wood and woodbased products.
Over the last decades there has been increased use of man-made boards as opposed to natural timber. But man-made boards come with low moisture contents and therefore can be hydroscopic. i.e., they can absorb moisture from the atmosphere so need to be stored dry.
Once made into an item that item needs to be kept dry and protected from inherent moisture present in the atmosphere particularly in the winter months. Higher external ambient winter temperatures do not mean that the air is dry, so heating within a wood-working factory especially, is needed.
Our industry also has other special needs when wood or wood-based products are cut or machined, fine dusts are produced, so the workforce needs protecting from these fine dusts, so a safe working environment is provided.
So, to meet COSHH regulations effective dust extraction systems from the wood working machinery is
needed. This causes large amounts of air movement within the factory. The extraction system draws the air to a central filter to separate the wood-waste from the transport air.
If the extraction system is fitted with return air, then this extracted air is put back into the factory. Increasingly dust extraction manufacturers and suppliers are becoming more and more reluctant to fit return air systems, due to the risks this presents.
So, what are the risks? Well, the obvious one is if a cloth filter bag in the extraction system tears then dust gets introduced into the return air so gets blown into the factory. Next, what if there is a fire in the filter system? Flames and or smoke can be blown into the factory with disastrous results. This then requires automatic fire detection, automatic spark detection and extinguishing equipment fire dampers that shut automatically. Dust detection systems with automatic shutdown.
You can see why more and more suppliers and installers want to resist return air systems on dust extraction systems.
So, with no return air from the filter the extracted air must be replaced with fresh clean air from outside. To maintain a good working environment in the winter, this air needs to be heated.
With a boiler based or “wet” system an Air Handling unit can be used to heat the air by passing it over a heat exchanger, the factory can be heated using high level heat exchangers that take warm air from the ceiling and heat it and push it back down to floor level.
The problem with this is that the heating distribution system becomes very expensive which can put off installations in the smaller industrial units that many
manufacturers within the UK woodworking industry occupy.
So Ranheat have come up with a simple solution to this by using the extensive air movement within a factory caused by the extraction system, not only to remove the harmful dust pneumatically but use this existing air movement to distribute the heat from a warm air based industrial wood fired heater.
The name for this method is “Smart air movement heating distribution”. Or SAMHD. So, what is Smart air movement heating distribution?
We all know that hot air rises and in a workplace the heat is needed at floor level, so the workforce can feel the benefit. Also, we want to prevent materials stored at high level in racking from drying out too much.
So, a SAMHD is a high-level axial fan that takes air into it then blows a portion of the air taken in horizontally at high level to the next SAMHD and at the same time blows a portion of the air vertically down towards the floor.
The motors can be three phase or single phase but increasingly energy saving EC external rotor motors are being used.
Simple to install, light in weight
“The industrial wood-fired heater with automatic feed system is mounted outside in a metal building adjacent to the storage silo and takes clean air from outside to be blown into the factory at high level and then the SMAHDs do the rest”
and no expensive heat exchangers and pipework. They are simple to re-locate if the factory layout changes. The SMAHDs are fitted with a thermostat so they don’t switch on until the air intake is at a pre-set temperature. The air passed to the next SMAHD quickly heats up and the next SMAHD turns on and passes it to the next and so on and on. If the wood-fired heater runs out of fuel, they automatically turn off on fall in temperature.
The industrial wood-fired heater with automatic feed system is mounted outside in a metal building adjacent to the storage silo and takes clean air from outside to be blown into the factory at high level and then the SMAHDs do the rest. Finally, air is also drawn down from the room by the extraction system to the hoods on the various machines. This warm air is then transported with the extracted dust and then released via the dust extraction filter.
The inlet ducting to the factory from the heater is fitted with a heat detecting fire damper as a safety precaution. The Industrial woodfired heater is fitted with a summer winter divertor enabling the heater to blow warm air to atmosphere in the summer for continued disposal of the wood-waste when heating is not required.

Salvamac record 2022 … and really optimistic for 2023
“A really positive climate,” that’s what Christian Salvador, founder of Salvamac Group, is expecting for 2023. “What’s our mood as we approach this year? Definitely calm and positive!
Christian says that the company has prepared for the future with great attention, pondering on its strategies: “But let me add that in the final weeks of last year, we had a special feeling: the typical anxiety of the eve has disappeared, the question whether the upcoming year would be a success for us in UK, whether our products would be appreciated by customers and dealers … with some exaggeration, I can say we have the opposite worry, namely that the 2023 will be successful and we sign many orders!
Summarising the situation, Christian says: “Business is going great for us, especially in UK. At Salvamac, we are ripening the fruits of our work during the crisis years, and now we have reached the saturation of our production capacity. Of course, we have adopted all measures and tools to do more and not to miss any opportunity!” he says laughing.
Once more, Christian surprises us: “All exaggerations apart, we are approaching 2023 with great peace of mind: it is going to be a great year, because companies want and need to invest in our range of products that are necessary to reach higher level of efficiency.”
In 2022, this path was enriched and completed with the presentation of the new innovative version of the innovative optimising saw SalvaPush 2000. “Optimising wood cutting for the needs of individual customer is part of our DNA” continues Ziemowit Dolkowksi, partner of Salvamac, “and this is just the beginning. We have created a very flexible and cutting-edge technical solution for improving single boards with defects and qualities or even packs of boards, using the most advanced technologies at a reasonable price.”
The cutting range is also complemented by the Classic cutting saws characterised by the 3S of
Salvamac’ s philosophy: Solid, Simple and Safe
Solid because they are designed and made to work even in difficult conditions and of heavy wood. The structure is completely made of hard painted steel, very thick and very resistant. Safe thanks to the two-hand safety control in an ergonomic position and the blade protection cover that allows to work in absolute safety. Simple because the ease of use is increased by the new successful Salvastop 100 device, the evolution of the numerical control length positioning and stop system. It is the real solution to save labour costs, waste of productivity and decrease human errors and finally forget to use the tape measure.
“As for the United Kingdom,” continues Christian, “we have accumulated, both myself and my friend and partner, Robert, bring a great deal of experience directly on the field by visiting a large number of our customers’ factories. We know the specific requests that come from markets comprising pallet production, garden furnishing and fencing, window frames, or the entire construction industry, without neglecting the resale of semi-finished wooden products and custom-made solid wood furniture. Salvamac was born from this experience of over twenty years, with the aim of being the meeting point between modern technology and even an inexperienced end user.”
Robert Ziemowit Dolkowki of Salvamac continues: “Our team and our partners in UK are the reasons of these 300 machines installed. This triple hundred shows again that we are true leader of cross-cutting solutions with an excellent customer support, expert engineering and first of all great people. We strongly believe in human relationships: our customer is not a serial number but a person with a name and needs. They must be satisfied and happy with our machines in order to smile! The people must be at the centre of everything!”

Choosing the right woodworking adhesive
The demand for increased heat resistance and water resistance, as well as the switch to ‘complete line’ manufacturing processes, is fundamentally changing the woodworking business. But how does using the right hot-melt adhesive assist your business in overcoming these challenges? Furniture & Joinery Production heard from xxxxx xxxxx from adhesive experts Beardow & Adams to find out more.
Consumers expect kitchen and bathroom furniture to be able to withstand the rigours of everyday use, but with an increasing number of appliances – from boiling water taps to multiple ovens – being used in the home, this creates extra demands on wood furniture and its ability to cope with water and heat. This is in addition to the damage that can be caused by kitchen leaks or bathroom accidents.
Furniture manufacturers must address these issues in order to meet the demands of customers and to stand out from the competition.
How do woodworking and furniture manufacturers gain an edge?
Hot-melt adhesives may only make up a small percentage of furniture items, yet have a significant impact on its long term durability. A strong bond plays a ‘make or break’ role, ensuring protective edgebanding and profile wrapping is held firming in place, whilst maintaining its attractive appearance. Thus helping to keep consumers happy with the overall look and feel of their kitchen and bathroom furniture for years to come. Choosing the right adhesive is therefore essential. Working closely with partners across the woodworking industry, Beardow Adams develops hot melts using the latest raw materials and formulation technologies. Whether it’s for custom hot melts or off-theshelf products, our in-house experts can test adhesive performance with each new substrate and application to ensure that furniture manufacturers are always ready to succeed.
Streamlined production process
Another trend is for complete line woodworking set-ups, where a single wood glue – such as BAM 2442 – is used for both edgebanding and profile wrapping.
The process begins with the application of BAM 2272A, a specialist filler that is used to fill holes in substrates and form a protective film. Filling is less expensive when using a high viscosity specialist material, as opposed to lower viscosity adhesives, and provides better
resistance to water ingress and damage. This set-up helps to streamline production and reduce stock inventories, whilst improving overall product performance including resistance to water damage.
For further information on hot-melt adhesives and how they may help your business meet the latest trends in woodworking, contact Bearstow & Adams.
