The final quarter of the year is upon us, and the momentum of industry events and positive stories of investment and evolution continues. As I get back into the swing of things, I’m very much looking forward to reporting on the unique challenges facing the industry and, most importantly, bringing you coverage on its many triumphs. There are countless stories of perseverance and diversification in this climate, of companies striking that fine balance of ecological and economic progress, of mind-blowing technological and digital innovations, and of game-changing occupational safety solutions.

Bayram Timber co-founder announces retirement Geoff Goodwin, the co-founder of Bayram Timber Ltd, now a member of BSW Group, has announced his retirement.

Geoff founded the Melton-based business almost 50 years ago, in 1975, and has been pivotal to its success throughout the years.

He has most recently served Bayram as a nonexecutive director, following BSW’s acquisition of the timber manufacturing specialists in 2021.

Geoff’s long and distinguished career in the timber trade is notable, having made many friends and kick-started countless careers during his tenure.

Timber merchant announces £10m acquisition The Furniture After more than 70 years of trading, Savoy Timber Ltd, a Lancashire-headquartered family business, has been acquired by Savoy Timber Holdings Ltd, a new company set up

by Chris Powell of Estate Sawmills Ltd, a fastgrowing Bradford-based timber merchant.

Established in 1952, Savoy Holdings, which trades as Savoy Timber, has grown into a £15m turnover timber merchant group with superstores in Preston, Blackpool and Wigan, as well as an online store. With customers across the UK, the business supplies a wide range of timber products including doors, decking and worktops. It employs 82 people.

The acquisition complements the operations of Estate Sawmills, another family-run business

based in Heaton, Bradford. Headed up by Chris Powell, it supplies timber, fencing, decking, agricultural products and gates to trade and DIY customers nationwide.

The deal follows the retirement of George Cornwell, managing director of Savoy Holdings.

The business will continue to trade as Savoy Timber.

“We have an ambitious vision and this latest acquisition marks another important milestone as we seek to press on with our expansion, having capitalised on the garden improvement boom post-Covid,” says Chris Powell. “We are now actively looking for a complementary timber business in the South to strengthen our national coverage.”

Makers’ Company and FIESTA announce new apprentice service

The Furniture Makers’ Company and the Furniture and Interiors Education, Skills and Training Alliance (FIESTA) are partnering on a new free service that will support businesses in the furniture and furnishing industry to close their skills gaps and take on apprentices with ease.

Launching this autumn, the Apprentice and Skills Plus Service will help companies recruit and retain new talent, upskill existing employees and act as a central resource for information, advice and guidance on apprenticeships.

Natalie Cole has been appointed as skills plus coordinator and will be responsible for the management and development of the service, including signposting employers to approved training providers with access to funding. www.furnituremakers.org.uk

Cautious optimism continues to return for UK SMEs

Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Business Sentiment Index (BSI), which measures SME business confidence, has risen modestly for the second consecutive research period, reversing 2022’s downward trend.

Unlike earlier in 2023, however, there were marked differences among the various sectors, with Manufacturing & Engineering seeing its BSI scores falling back slightly after gains in the first half of the year.

The headwinds facing small and medium-sized firms have abated somewhat, with inflation falling back and energy prices stabilising, however, interest rates rises and cost of funds remain a concern for many business owners.

Appetite for investment Overall, the appetite to invest remained stable, with three quarters of UK firms aiming to seek funding for investment in the next 12 months.

Manufacturing & Engineering remained strong at 81% (May 2023: 83%).

Missed opportunities The number of companies that have missed business opportunities because of a lack of available funding continued to fall, from 51% at the end of 2022 to 45% in May 2023 and 41% in September 2023.

Economic outlook Businesses continue to be more negative than positive about the macro-economic outlook, however, the gap between positive and negative sentiment has narrowed this year compared to 2022.

There was no change between May 2023 and September 2023 in the cumulative result.

This indicator has contributed most to the decline in the overall BSI and it’s notable that in November 2021 75% of respondents were positive about the economy – by December 2022 this had fallen to just 36% and has risen only 6 percentage points through 2023.

“It’s worth stating again that – in our experience – what business owners want, almost above all else, is consistency, which gives them the ability to plan and forecast effectively. Many of the recent challenges have been entirely unexpected, and after the difficulties of the past few years, it’s impacted their ability to grow.

“What continues to impress me, though, is firms’ appetite to invest in their future and the number expecting to expand in the coming year, and we’re looking forward to working with those business owners in the coming months and years.”

Predicted business performance Predictions about future business performance continued to remain stable, with the majority expecting their prospects to remain unchanged.

“It’s pleasing to see that positivity is continuing to return to the market, albeit not at the rate we would all like to see, but the reality is the UK’s SME community continues to face a wide variety of challenges,” says Matt Roper, CEO of Close Brothers’ Commercial business.

“These include a stubbornly high rate of inflation, higher interest rates, and a sluggish economy impacting demand.

Deanestor announces record turnover

BFM Fabric Show to join forces with new Furniture Component Expo In response to calls for a more central setting, the British Furniture Manufacturers has announced its popular fabric show is merging with the new Furniture Component Expo in 2024.

A long-standing date in the industry’s calendar, the BFM London Fabric Show is being moved from its traditional location in the capital to run alongside the Furniture Component Expo at the Telford International Centre on 24th and 25th April.

The new arrangement will answer calls from across the industry to have a location that is

more accessible to the entire UK, as well as international visitors, with easy rail, air and road connections, as well as ample parking.

It will also provide more space for visitors and exhibitors, coupled with the opportunities and convenience of having two industry events in one format.

The move comes as the BFM sees the Furniture Component Expo go from strength to strength, with two headline sponsors, BeA UK (Fastening Systems Ltd) and the Vita Group, already in place. www.fcexpo.co.uk

30 years of the CQA-Catas Quality Award Technicians, entrepreneurs and operators in the wood-furniture supply chain met on 21st September in San Giovanni al Natisone, at the Catas headquarters, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the CQA-Catas Quality Award, the product certification issued by the laboratory.

To date there are 200 products certified by Catas, on the basis of specific and very strict criteria, in terms of formaldehyde emissions, coating systems and laminated wood profiles for windows and doors frames and – in more recent times – “Made in Italy” furniture.

Around 50 companies – both Italian and foreign – have chosen to certify their products with CQA, and many of them gathered not only to celebrate the anniversary, but above all to learn more about the contents and qualities of Catas certification.

In his speech, Franco Bulian, MD of Catas, emphasised how Catas certification – born, as already mentioned, from a precise and strong necessity of the companies – has a triple value: technical, because it is based on tests; objective, because the requirements are described by certification regulations and national and international standards; and distinctive, because it immediately places the certified product in a prominent position compared to others.

Deanestor, one of the UK’s leading fitout specialists, has revealed a strong financial performance with the publication of its latest accounts. The company reports a 35 per cent increase in turnover to £19m and a return to pre-pandemic profit levels.

Turnover increased by £5m in the financial year ending 31st December 2022 and operating profit rose to £750,000. Sales of £17.5m have already been secured so far in 2023, with a strong order pipeline which extends into 2025.

Deanestor’s financial performance is now one of the strongest in the FF&E (furniture and fitout) sector and the business has continued to grow across each of its target markets – student accommodation, build-to-rent, healthcare, and education. Q&A - David Todd, Materials & Finishes Show event director

Could you tell us a little about your background David?

I’ve worked in exhibitions for over 15 years, working across a variety of sectors and shaping events around the globe, so I’ve not found the move across to Montgomery Group’s ‘design and build division’ too dissimilar to my previous roles. The transition has been very smooth.

We’ve got a great team of experts, spanning a range of disciplines, from sales and marketing through to PR and content, all working to ensure a very successful relaunch of W Exhibition as the Materials & Finishes Show next May. What is your vision for the Materials & Finishes Show?

Our vision is very much to build on the success of W Exhibition, listen to the market and develop an event which serves the needs of our community both now and in the future. When Materials & Finishes Show goes live at the NEC (19th - 22nd May, 2024), all areas of the

material journey – from the initial stages of raw processing through to finishing and component supply for completed products – will be represented.

If you are involved in the wood, timber or stone processing chain and are looking to connect with furniture manufacturers, joiners, carpenters, machinists and installers – Materials & Finishes Show is the perfect platform for you to connect your brand with the UK market by exhibiting.

The second most important element is listening to customer feedback. This is an event for our community, and we want the event to be shaped by its customers, we want and need that constant communication with our clients.

With six months before the doors open, how is that vision progressing from an exhibitors’ point of view?

Luckily for us, any pain-points from the previous exhibition have been very simple and quick fixes for us and we’re now in a very stable timeline, with dates secured for Materials & Finishes Show in 2026 after our return next May. This has allowed us to focus our attention on growing the event.

We’ve appointed a new creative agency and digital marketing agency who are working alongside our in-house team. We’re already utilising new marketing channels and techniques to ensure that we drive the right visitors to the show. Exhibitors and visitors will be seeing and hearing the Materials & Finishes Show campaign on more channels than ever before, from online and in print to on the airwaves as we activate our campaign with FIX Radio for the first time. We’re also working with brand leaders and influencers to ensure that we are plugging all gaps with our campaign.

Could you tell us more about the content of the event in addition to the line-up of exhibitors?

There are so many new and exciting features in development in the background. We’ve been working really closely with our community to ensure that Materials & Finishes Show really delivers above and beyond expectations next May. Alongside new show features, such as the CPD certified learning programme, live demonstration zone and hosted buyer meetings programme, we are revising the show opening hours to include a new late-night feature on the Tuesday (May 21st, 2024) of the show. This will allow an extra opportunity for out of hours networking, which we know from experience works well for B2B trade shows.

Tell us about the current roster of exhibitors, and how you think that might progress over the coming months We’re in a really strong position as we move into September, with a good mix of legacy brands that people will be familiar with from the W Exhibition lineup, as well as a raft of completely new brands who have joined the lineup in recent weeks. What’s interesting is the broad mix of brand products and services that the Materials & Finishes Show 2024 lineup presents, which includes the likes of AES, Fen, Quin Global, Amicus and Machinery Services to name a few.

Visitors will still be able to see the industry innovation that they expect at the show, and this will be significantly enhanced with a wide materials and finishes offering.

The KBB market is a key growth area for us, with brands such as Hanex signing up to exhibit in recent weeks. We’ll also be growing the fixtures, fittings and hardware section of the show, which will include brands such as our relaunch partner, Hranipex. Brands like these will perfectly complement the machinery and materials brands who are already part of the exhibitor lineup.

Unilap cuts through capacity backlog with Vollmer

Almost 50 years ago, South Yorkshire Saw & Tool Co – a small saw blade sharpening and ancillary supply company – first opened its doors for business. Wind forwards half a century and the Doncaster manufacturer that started working out of a two-bay garage has evolved into one of the UK’s leading saw blade and round tool manufacturing and servicing companies for the woodworking industry.

The transformation of the company now known as Unilap is highly impressive. Still family-owned and operated by the sons of company founder, Darrell Hughes, Unilap has invested heavily in sharpening technology from Vollmer UK since the late 1970s. Now, as the company continues its exceptional growth trajectory, it has invested in another three Vollmer machines to increase capacity and compress lead times of its 5,000+ product lines.

Unilap utilises its automated CNC technology to manufacture everything from circular saw blades, TCT and PCD tipped rotary tools and solid carbide tools. To manufacture the

countless product lines with thousands of new, re-sharpened and serviced tools being delivered each week, the company has increased its Vollmer plant list to 11 Vollmer machines.

Adding to the portfolio that already includes QM, CHD, CHX, QXD and QWD models, the Doncaster manufacturer purchased a Vollmer CHX840 with an HS loading system in April 2022.

This was rapidly followed by a Vollmer QXD250 with the HC5 loader in July and then a Vgrind 260 with an HC4 loading system in October.

The investment in additional capacity and capability is the result of annual post-Covid growth of 25%, as well as growth in new market segments. The reasoning behind the CHX840 and the QXD250 was simple. The automated CHX840 saw blade sharpening machine was purchased to add unmanned ‘lights-out’ running and alleviate capacity on the 22-employee company’s other saw blade manufacturing and servicing machines.

clock, so upgrading to a brand-new QXD250 would add capacity. It would also support the rapid growth and give continuity of supply in the event of planned maintenance or machine downtime on the existing QXD200. The Vgrind 260 was a completely new technology and a leap of faith for Unilap – a leap the company is delighted it has made.

As Unilap Managing Director, Carl Hughes says: “We have been buying Vollmer machines for over 40 years and we love the brand. The build quality, innovation, reliability and the ability to outperform all other machines is what keeps us buying Vollmer.

With saw blade manufacturing continually growing and a series of robot-loaded Vollmer CHD machines running around the clock, Unilap wanted to automate the production of smallerdiameter saw blades to ease capacity issues and compress lead times. The solution was the Vollmer CHX840 with an HS automation system that can accommodate up to 25 saw blades.

Commenting upon the unprecedented postCovid growth of 30% for saw blades, Carl adds:

“Whilst Covid was difficult for many people, others managed to save a lot of money and as soon as the pandemic ended, consumers invested in home renovations. This rapidly accelerated the demand for circular saw blades.”

Unilap wanted a machine capable of producing saw blades of 180mm diameter and smaller.

This would leave the existing CHD machines to automatically process larger saws whilst alleviating capacity pressure on the manually loaded saw blade sharpening machines. The Vollmer CHX840, with the HS automation system, was the perfect fit.

Before the arrival of the CHX840, an employee would produce upward of 200 saw blades a week by manually loading a saw blade sharpening machine for 8-10 hours a day. With the arrival of the CHX840, up to 22 blades can be loaded to the automation system during the day and this will run unmanned whilst the operator can continue running a manually loaded machine. However, the major benefit is having the ability to re-load the CHX840 with another 22 saw blades at the end of the day shift to run overnight unmanned – effectively doubling capacity.

Also contributing to the success of the business is the new QXD250 machine with its HC5 automation system. The QXD250 was installed to underpin the growth of the rotary PCD tipped tool division and, before its arrival, the existing Vollmer QXD200 machine was running 24 hours a day and six days a week. This gave the company no opportunity to grow its production of specialist rotary tools.

Additionally, any time-consuming complex tools would create a bottleneck. As Bob adds: “Despite the complexity of the PCD tools we produce, our lead times would be 2-3 weeks for a new tool with existing re-tipping and servicing tools often having a lead time of around one week. With the new QXD250, we can reduce the lead times to less than one week – and in many instances 2-3 days.”

The QXD250 was supplied with the HC5 automation system that can accommodate 28 tools up to 320mm in diameter and 250mm long with a weight of up to 25kg. Offering 24/7 unmanned running, the new QXD250 at Unilap is frequently running non-stop for up to six days without an intervention.

“The leap forward in technology with the new QXD250 is incredible,” comments Bob. “The QXD250 incorporates Vollmer’s new VPulse EDM generator that is increasing our cutting speeds by up to 40% whilst delivering vastly improved surface finishes up to 0.1μRa. “From a software perspective, the machine has a Windows-based interface with the ExLevel PRO software that makes programming the machine much easier with its flexibility and intuitive interface. We can programme tools 50% faster than before.

“Added to this, the enhanced probing technology can now probe a tool in three minutes as opposed to 30 minutes on the previous machine. When you add all of these factors together, the new QXD250 is at least 50% more productive than its predecessor and the overall comparative time saving can be up to 70% to 80% when you add in the programming, set-up and probing efficiencies.”

The final machine of the three to arrive at Unilap was the Vollmer Vgrind 260 with an HC4 loading system that can accommodate up to 158 round shank tools. With its unique multilayer machining concept that has two vertically positioned grinding spindles on the C-axis pivot point, the move to a new machine concept was a daunting prospect for Unilap – but the company now wishes it made the move sooner.

Unilap produces an ever-increasing quantity of compression cutters for the woodworking and composite sectors. However, these ‘up cut down cut’ tools incorporate a more complex geometry than standard tools. That was until the arrival of the Vgrind 260.

“To prevent delamination on surfaces, the compression tools have two opposing geometries on a single tool, which can pose more of a challenge with the programming process,” adds Bob. “However, the Numroto software suite on the Vgrind 260 makes the

programming and production of compression tools and other complex geometry tools very simple. The intuitive guidance through the process enables us to programme and produce these tools with ease, and this is further streamlining our output and cutting our lead times with complex tools.”

The transition of rotary carbide tools from our other CNC machines to the Vgrind has been seamless. The NUMROTOPLUS software platform makes programming easy, as it combines simulation and collision monitoring in an intuitive control panel. This is perfect for processing new tools and moving existing tools from our other machines has proven to be simplistic.

Laminate fabricator first to invest in new edgebanding technology

Duncan Reeds’ investment in a Rover A pod & rail machine and a Stream A edgebander from Biesse has had a dramatic impact on efficiency at its Billingshurst site. The laminate fabricator’s CNC operation has become 25% more efficient as a result of reduced set-up time and downtime, whilst the edgebander is pushing performance boundaries thanks to the innovative AR70 high speed corner rounding unit.

Duncan Reeds’ first dealings with Biesse UK date back 30 years – when both businesses were in their infancy and compact laminates did not yet exist. In Daventry, Biesse UK was in the early stages of establishing itself as a subsidiary of its Italian parent company – a leader in machining technology for wood, stone, glass and advanced materials. Meanwhile, from a modest unit in West Sussex, Duncan Reeds was building a business producing and sizing laminated boards.

As its business started to take off, Duncan Reeds decided to replace its table saws with a beam saw and opted for Biesse’s Selco brand.

This marked the start of an ongoing investment policy that has continued to the present day.

“We started with simple table saws and an 8ft press,” recalls Andy Bilton, Director, who has been at Duncan Reeds since it was founded in 1989 by his brother-in-law and father-in-law. “When we could afford it, we bought a 10ft press and a beam saw, adding to that as capacity increased.”

Biesse’s support was invaluable to Duncan Reeds during those early days. Fast forward to 2023 and once again, Biesse is supporting Duncan Reeds during another formative period – its transition to a highly flexible operation that can cater for batch one scenarios through digitalisation of certain processes.

30 years on …

In the interim, both companies have grown considerably. Biesse UK, which celebrates its 30th birthday this year, now boasts a turnover of £30m+ and employs 100 members of staff. Duncan Reeds has grown its turnover progressively year on year and has evolved into a dynamic operation with three sites across

the UK. It has built up a reputation as a leading fabricator of bespoke laminated products for a diverse range of applications and industries.

“One day we might get an enquiry for 50 panels drilled with inserts for a furniture job and the next day we might be profiling the edges of a compact laminate or producing acrylic hygiene screens,” says Dean Harkess-Cowlyn (Director), illustrating the variety of jobs that make up the company’s workflow.

“Whether we are dealing with washroom companies, shop fitters, laboratory fitters or joinery companies, we need machines that are versatile enough to accommodate any profile, any material, any size and any tool.”

Regular contact by Biesse’s sales team meant that Duncan Reeds was aware of the progress the machine manufacturer had made in terms of adapting to flexible, batch one production.

Therefore, when it came to replacing a 20-yearold edgebander, Biesse was the first (and only) port of call.

A UK first: the AR70 In January 2023, Duncan Reeds became the first UK company to take delivery of a Stream A edgebander with Biesse’s innovative new AR70 high speed corner rounding unit.

This NC controlled unit enables users to switch quickly between different radii (3, 2, 1.5 and

1mm) or a chamfer finish for the corners of the panel, plus it rounds the top and bottom corners in one unit. This means that rather than having to change the tooling to accommodate different tape thicknesses or round off the corners, the machine does this automatically, reducing job changeover time.

Andy says the flexibility afforded by the AR70 was a key factor in the decision to invest in the Stream A edgebander.

“One minute we will be applying 2mm ABS edging, then will need to switch to 12mm trims on solid fire doors the next. Before, it was a case of making manual adjustments and running test pieces. Now, with the AR70, because the machine is numerically controlled, our operators just call up the preset programme and the machine recalibrates. Switching from one job to another can be done in a matter of minutes, seamlessly, with no set-up time hindering manufacturing.”

Working with wider panels The Stream A’s flexibility will support the growing demand the company is seeing for floor to ceiling high end cubicles with 44mm solid floors and 15mm door rebates.

“Our previous machine could only accommodate timber of up to 19mm in width.

Once we had put the timber on, dressed it, sized it and put a 15mm rebate on, there wasn’t a lot of margin – it was very tight. The Stream A can work with 22mm wide timber which gives us a

Whilst the machine was being built, Duncan Reeds sent a pallet of samples to Biesse’s HQ in Italy. The load contained a diverse range of panels and edging materials – everything from ABS to timber lipping, laminate lipping, real wood edging, veneer panels, plain chipboards and laminated MDF. This gave Duncan Reeds confidence that the machine they had ordered was going to be able to cope with any job that was thrown at it.

“It was sent back to us, we checked it all and it looked absolutely fine,” says Andy.

Stream A solves sticky situations Two glue management features on the Stream A are also contributing to the efficiency gains Duncan Reeds is seeing. Firstly, the application of glue is numerically controlled, which means it is optimised for each preset programme.

“This makes life much easier for our operators.

It makes for much more efficient use of adhesive enabling the exact amount to be used which eliminates unnecessary cleaning,” says Andy.

Secondly, an inbuilt CIP (Clean In Place) system within the glue head eliminates the need to remove the head from the machine for cleaning after using PUR. “Previously, we shut down the system on a Friday afternoon and when we came back in on Monday, unless the glue head had been stored in a sealed nitrogen tank, we needed a new one,” recalls Andy.

Rover A streamlines CNC operation A month after the delivery of the Stream A, Biesse installed a Rover A pod & rail machine with a five-axis head.

“The Rover A was a direct replacement for a competitor’s machine which proved hugely problematic even after only three years,” says Andy.

“Biesse has been a breath of fresh air. The support we have received so far has been excellent,” he adds.

Biesse’s B_SOLID software, incorporated as a standard feature with the Rover A, has revolutionised the way that Duncan Reeds operates, thanks to its digital twin simulation and CAD drawing manipulation capabilities.

B_SOLID gives users a unique view into their CNC machine by creating a digital twin – that is a virtual replica of their real-world machine.

Working on the machine’s control panel or on a remote PC, the user can use B_SOLID to design a machining programme for a particular project. They can then run a rapid and realistic

3D simulation of that programme – de-risking the project by verifying the feasibility of the intended tool path, machining speed and tool selection, and giving an accurate estimate of job completion time.

Simulation software assists job costing Duncan Reeds is finding this simulation capability particularly useful for informing pricing; if they know how much time will be needed to carry out the required machining operations, this can be used as the basis for costings.

“We know exactly how much it costs to run a job, so if we are quoting for a project that is price-sensitive we can go in with a very accurate costing that will give us a greater chance of winning the work,” remarks Dean.

B_SOLID has also sped up the process of translating customer drawings into CNC programmes at Duncan Reeds by enabling operators to import drawings directly into the machine’s software.

“Previously we had to redraw the drawing.

Now, as soon as anyone in our team receives a drawing, it is emailed immediately to a dedicated email address so that an operator can get on and create the programme. This has streamlined the process, dramatically reduced programming and set-up time and made us really appreciate the advances in what technology can do. And we have managed to do that because of the training and support that Biesse has provided,” says Dean.

He continues: “Where in the past we used to see the CNC machine sitting idle while the operator was setting up the programme, now we are getting jobs done far more quickly because we are spending less time setting them up. I would estimate that we have increased efficiency by 25%.”

Confidence in machine care After its experience of frequent breakdowns with its last machine, Duncan Reeds is taking no chances on the warranty front. It has taken out Biesse’s industry-leading five-year Total Care warranty programme to protect its investment.

“I have every confidence that when the Rover A is five years old, we will be looking at replacing it with another Biesse machine with Total Care.

We see continual investment in new technology as essential to remaining competitive in the marketplace and our confidence in Biesse is high owing to the success we have had with these two machines,” concludes Dean. www.biesse.com

Central steps up to a greener future Extractly Ltd has recently completed an extraction system upgrade for Derbyshirebased Central Joinery Group, including a new 55kW Nederman main fan, as well as retrofitting Ecogate® energy-saving equipment throughout the factory.

Established 30 years ago, Central Joinery now operates two purpose-built manufacturing facilities and, although the company has kept abreast of the latest technology and manufacturing methods over the years, it has also managed to maintain its traditional craftsmanship standards. The company has developed an enviable reputation for the high-quality bespoke joinery and staircases it manufactures and, over the last decade or so, has gained industry accolades from some of the UK’s leading housebuilders.

At the company’s head office in Swadlincote, an ageing 55kW main fan was no longer

working as effectively as it once did and, for operations director Kyle Archbold, the extraction system’s efficiency was beginning to be a cause for concern, as Extractly’s sales director, Jake Oldfield, explained: “Extractly had been recommended to Kyle by another customer where we’d recently commissioned the installation of three new fans in conjunction with the installation of Ecogate® ‘on-demand’ extraction technology. Kyle invited us to undertake a review of the current extraction system at Central Joinery and, as suspected, the old fan was indeed ready for replacement.

“The original 55kW fan was specified and installed to ensure sufficient capacity would be available to meet the factory’s maximum demand for extraction when all the woodworking machines on that line were operating and producing dust waste at the same time – and this was still the rationale for replacing the fan

with a new Nederman 55kW fan. In addition, the factory also runs two high-speed CNC machines, with extraction provided via two separate 18.5kW fans.”

After carrying out an energy survey at Central Joinery, it was easy for Jake Oldfield to demonstrate the huge cost savings that could be achieved if Ecogate® technology was installed across the factory. The old 55kW fan had been running at full power, all day, every day, ever since it was installed, as were the two smaller fans. With Ecogate® controlling the system, extraction fans run only when required, and run at the optimum speed required to deliver the exact extraction volume required.

“There was definitely scope for savings to be made on the cost of extraction for the two CNC machines,” says Jake Oldfield, “but the biggest savings would be achieved by installing automatic motorised Ecogate® dampers in the ductwork serving each individual machine.”

Because of the bespoke nature of the work carried out at Central Joinery, the equipment list includes a number of specialist machines that are used on a regular basis, although only for

short periods at a time, along with other items of equipment that are required for essential operations, but are only used infrequently.

“The varied use of machinery at Central Joinery completely negates the need for extraction to operate continuously at full power”, Jake explains: “With Ecogate® technology controlling the system, the fans run at the maximum speed necessary to extract efficiently, but only from machines that are in operation at any one time.”

It’s clear to see that this would reduce electricity costs but, because of the laws of physics (the Fan Affinity Laws), the actual savings are disproportionately high — reducing the fan running speed by just 20% achieves a 49% reduction in the electricity needed to power the motor.

Effectively, for a company like Central Joinery, where all machines are rarely, if ever, in use at the same time, the fans will only use a fraction of the electricity consumed by running a fan continuously at full power. Extractly conservatively predict that the savings Central Joinery will make

“We’ve yet to receive an electricity bill since the installation was completed,” says Kyle Archbold, “but just by walking into the factory it’s obvious that the system is running slower, less often, and more efficiently — the noise level has dropped dramatically now the fan isn’t running continuously, and the more efficient extraction gives us reassurance that the workspace is a clean and much safer environment for our employees.”

Neal Chambers, production manager at Central Joinery, concurred wholeheartedly with the noise reduction: “I’ve got to admit I was sceptical about

the benefits claimed by Ecogate but, in the days following the installation, the factory was so much quieter I had to go and check everyone was still working!”

The benefits for Central Joinery don’t stop with the cost savings and noise reduction; reducing fan speeds causes less wear and tear on motors and filter media, and Extractly have also calculated that the predicted energy savings equate to an annual reduction in CO2 emissions of over 26 tonnes — a big step towards reducing Central Joinery’s carbon footprint.

Five-axis machining and diversification drives post-Covid growth for panel-based business All CNC provides precision three- and five axisCNC routing, Laser and 3D print services to architects, designers, sign makers, carpenters, artists, set and exhibition manufacturers and a wide variety of other industries across the south east, UK and Europe. Furniture & Joinery Production’s Ian Gillam travelled to Bells Yew Green, near Frant in Kent, to meet with All CNC director, Piers Ross.

Up until the beginning of 2020, All Scene All Props Ltd was a successful business making scenery for the West End with a strong order book. Then Covid came along and, as with many businesses, navigating this hugely de-stabilising period necessitated a different approach to give the company a chance of surviving, and then to move forward as things hopefully returned to relative normality.

“The theatre industry was ahead of everyone else going into the Covid situation, it was almost an immediate shut-down for that sector,” says Piers. “We were among the first people to feel the effect of that.”

Piers and fellow director Danny Hayter started their company six months after they left university, and they didn’t stop until Covid happened. “The company went from strength to strength, evolving with each job into a strong and consistent business,” explains Piers. “We went from just the two of us to 32 employees by the time we shut down. And we asked each other, well, what do we do now? We’ve got this massive building; how do we repurpose it? Or don’t we?

Do we just jack it all in, walk away, cut our losses and hope for the best?”

“But immediately those doubts were quashed, and we focused on the fact that All CNC had previously existed in a smaller format, pretty successfully in fact, so we tried to think about the

next steps,” says Piers.

“We got all the funding together we could and threw it head-long into Google Ads. Somewhat surprisingly, within about two weeks it started paying off! We picked up a massive contract with a company called Lordship Chairs building thousands of their chairs for them … during Covid during that first year. That led to some other contracts, and before long we could see the need to invest in more machines,” says Piers.

All CNC were finding their feet again: “Through Covid, we survived on a little 8 x 4 machine that served us pretty well for a reasonable time. We were basically running 12-16-hour shifts on it for over a year to get us out of trouble. Then I bought a Multicam machine, it was quite an old machine, and eventually we needed a significant upgrade,” says Piers.

“Towards the end of 2022, I was thinking of getting a load-on, load-off machine, with three-axis, and we were talking about putting aggregate heads on it and all that sort of thing, and I started looking into the whole aggregate head option and realised that, for what we do, it was a no go. They’re massively expensive units and they need a lot of maintenance. Anyhow, we actively looked at getting one of these roll-on, roll-off machines, with aggregates, with a pricetag of around the £130-140k mark. Then just as we were about to push the button on kit from a leading brand, Felder gave us a call and said a cancelled order five-axis machine had become available. I had never even really thought that much about a five-axis machine,” says Piers.

With Piers’ German heritage through his father, they opted for the Felder: “I chose not to consider

machines from the Far East as I wanted a long-term investment for which I knew I would have the levels of direct support that I wanted.

So, it kind of boiled down to a choice between the Italian machines or the German/Austrian machines – we went with Felder.”

“At that point, you’re then left with the decision about software, and what you’re going to use to run the machine. After researching that, I found out most of the software that comes with these machines, in my humble opinion, doesn’t work for our business at all. A lot of them won’t deal with multiple file types – they’re much more geared up to sort of what I would call the constant factory environment.”

“For me, it was about finding a machine and then finding a software package. Primarily their software essentially just acts as a transfer package for us, we don’t really do much with it.

The main reason for that is that one minute I can be dealing with DXF files, the next minute I can be dealing with SolidWorks files or others … we could be looking at AI files or JPEGs or all sorts, so I had to find software that would deal with that wider flexibility than the standard supplied

software packages seemed to be capable of.”

“We use Alphacam for our programming because it was the most versatile program I could find that allowed many different file types, seamlessly. In terms of software support, I think Alphacam is way above anything else, to the point where if you get really stuck, they’ll program it for you.”

“Back to the machine, and why Felder? Well, the simple answer is it was available, because I was in for a very long wait otherwise! Of course, those times have shortened now, and availability is much better. As it was a cancelled order, I didn’t get to spec the machine 100% as I would have wanted, but it’s pretty close. Like most things, you look back and you go, oh it would’ve been nice to have that! But I’m happy and it’s a wellspecified machine,” says Piers.

Felder describes the machine as: “A five-axis, nesting CNC machine which is a perfect panel cutting, drilling and milling centre providing huge flexibility and impressive capability for carpentry and joinery workshops. Entire custom-made furniture with all drilled holes, grooves and connections can readily be produced in one single operation. The latest nesting technologies ensure the highest possible material and time savings.”

Piers points out: “As far as I’m concerned, the H150 is ideal for our needs, it is a five-axis CNC machine and we use it primarily in joinery, industry and exhibition work. We can offer a lot of products with practical solutions that companies with a standard machine won’t have.”

“We can do a lot of five-axis machining just with the sheet in the table, and most people traditionally tend to run a pod and rail system.

You can’t get impressively tight angles so we can do a lot of mitre work.”

“For instance, probably one of the biggest

booms of that machine for us is the saw, that’s a real game-changer, because with most CNC companies when it comes to doing angles, you’re either looking at straight, 60°, 30° or 45°! To achieve that, they will have to do inner cuts with a bull-nose cutter, which means if you want a 32° angle on an 8ft board it could take two hours to cut the angle! Whereas now, with ours with a saw blade on it, we can cut any angle from 90° all the way through to 180° quickly, accurately and efficiently, no fuss and bother. It just gives you the ability to successfully manage angled cuts, really oblique angled cuts, and it takes only 5-10 seconds for an 8ft board,” concludes Piers.

Looking at how the business can evolve, Piers is confident that the Format 4 profit H150 will be a boon to its customers, saying that there’s a degree of education required to let his customers understand the greater capability and flexibility that a five-axis machine can offer designers and manufacturers in terms of a creative finish.

“I feel that what we can offer is quite substantial against what it would be just with a three-axis machine, because the thing is, once a part’s on our machine, you might as well just spend another few seconds drilling the side for instance, or cutting additional angles on it … it might just be an extra 30 seconds or something like that. Also, I must reiterate the accuracy of this type of machine nowadays … put simply these machines are mega accurate.”

“I think educating our customers on what the machine’s capabilities are, is probably the single biggest challenge at the minute, such as showing them how quickly and easily it can make a significant difference for their business,” says Piers.

Tiflex revolutionises production process with AXYZ and WARDJET tailored cutting solutions

British company, Tiflex Ltd, has been manufacturing cork and rubber bonded materials for over 70 years. The company specialises in the design, manufacture and distribution of industrial rubber products – including rubber sheeting, matting, and gaskets – across a range of industries, from construction and transportation, to marine and agriculture.

Based in Cornwall and employing 160 people, Tiflex has four divisions – TRACKELAST, TREADMASER, TICO and Oxbridge cricket balls.

The company, which has a strong commitment to quality, was accredited to ISO 9001 in 2015, and offers custom design and manufacturing services, which allow customers to create bespoke products that meet their specific needs.

cost and low production rates associated with traditional moulding methods. As the business expanded, it recognised the limitations of this approach, particularly for bespoke and lowvolume parts. The company sought innovative solutions to improve production capabilities and cater to a more diverse customer base.

In 2007, Tiflex decided to adopt AXYZ routers, part of AAG, a leading global manufacturer of CNC routers and waterjet cutting solutions.

With over 30 years of experience, they have built and installed thousands of CNC routers and waterjet cutting systems across a wide array of industries.

Tiflex started with a router to revolutionise its production process and offer a broader range of cutting services to its customers. The success of the first router led to the acquisition of a second machine in 2013, enabling the company to enhance productivity and efficiency significantly.

The primary use of these automation machines was cutting rubber sheets and pads into specific shapes. Over time, the scope expanded to include cutting large volumes of plastic sheets as well. Although the routers were occasionally employed for cutting small metal

parts or moulds for internal use, this was not their primary function.

“The integration of AXYZ routers significantly improved Tiflex’s productivity and efficiency,” says Matthew Orton, operations director at Tiflex Ltd. “The routers allowed the company to cut parts much quicker than traditional moulding methods. This improvement in production speed opened up opportunities to offer a wider range of products, which was not feasible before due to limitations in moulding sizes.”

The implementation of AXYZ routers required some changes for Tiflex. Employees needed to learn how to operate the machines and understand their capabilities effectively.

Additionally, cutting a diverse range of materials required learning optimal settings and techniques for each material. With the invaluable support and advice from AXYZ, Tiflex made these changes and fine-tuned their processes for improved productivity and efficiency.

The use of AXYZ routers led to substantial cost savings for Tiflex. The high cost of moulds for low-volume parts was eliminated, making it feasible for the company to produce a broader range of parts at lower volumes. This capability enabled Tiflex to secure orders that were

“Employees at Tiflex welcomed the introduction of AXYZ routers, as they significantly improved production techniques and offered solutions to customer problems,” explains Matthew. “The machines have become a key part of the company’s operations, and more staff have been trained to operate them across all shifts, including the night shift.

The XES 200 glue service station is a big benefit too, as it prevents glue from going off when the machine is not in use and rapidly heats the glue when we’re ready to run again. In addition, it gives us the ability to switch quickly from EVA to PU and vice versa.”

Q&A: Adam King, MD at Copenstick timber products, as without them the process is long and tedious.

I went to Ligna to find machinery that could help with our processes but was not satisfied with what was available at the time, which gave me an idea. Having studied BTEC Engineering in my younger years, I decided to start developing machines that would be fit for purpose and built to a standard that could be relied upon.

Could you talk about your experience as an exhibitor at Ligna?

The decision to make Ligna our first exhibition was easy. Ligna has always been a draw for me when it comes to woodworking machinery.

I have been visiting for many years as a keen follower of innovation and also for business interests as I once owned and ran my own Joinery business for 27 years. I always felt that if you needed to find a machine for a specific job then it would be showcased at Ligna.

The exhibition was well attended, and we saw a lot of potential customers with good solid leads to follow up after the expo. The enjoyment of being part of Ligna and its success has driven us to book a stand at HOLZ-HANDWERK 2024 Nuremberg and IWF 2024 Atlanta.

How did Copenstick come about?

Copenstick machinery grew from the well-known phrase “necessity is the mother of invention”.

In the days of running a timber and door manufacturing company, I needed machines to end-scribe and half-lap joint glazing bars for our

Secondly, the design and quality of the machines are built specifically for heavy use, with easy-to-set-up tooling and controls – this is extremely important for the business owner and the operator.

Our SDL End-scribing machine has the ability to stack tooling and use several different profiles if required. There is 90mm of elevation which allows the tools to be positioned via a simple digital readout, allowing the operator to make a simple profile change with just a few turns of a crank handle.

The TDL Half-lap jointing machine has a small footprint and is semi-automatic in its operation.

It can be coupled to a NC positioning stop, linked via ethernet and sent CSV files, which makes it easy for the operator to open a job file and start machining the parts without the need to input any information, saving time and errors.

We have also developed a completely new concept – the UNI. Built specifically for the SME Kitchen Bedroom and Bathroom manufacturer, this machine’s small footprint makes it ideal for smaller shops where the need for a tenoner, tilting spindle moulder, notching machine, biscuit jointer and dovetail jointing machine is essential, but space is limited. There is also provision to fit a small power feed unit which makes machining long workpieces much easier for the operator.

What are your plans for the future?

Our goal long term is to create safer processes for timber window and door manufacturing. This includes tooling solutions for classical machines and larger CNC machinery with economy of timber, time and energy always at the forefront of the development process. www.copenstick.co.uk

Matt metallics within kitchens have been gaining ground and now feature among the top-selling décors. It has always been difficult to achieve consistency within the colour for metallics but one of our recent collection launches, Fineflex metallic surfaces, do just that.

We are also seeing even more surface textures coming through, including woodgrains and more sculptural designs, perfect for bedroom furniture. Continuing the trend for matt unicolours we are introducing even more warm tonal palettes rather than the cool greys which have dominated for years.

What are your retail customers asking/ looking for?

With growing awareness and an increased drive to supply sustainable options for their own customers, we are seeing preferences for more environmentally friendly product solutions. As a fully certified FSC and PEFC business, raw materials such as board substrates and foil laminates are only sourced from responsible suppliers, ensuring they are environmentally conscious as possible.

Our furniture business has recently achieved certification to the environmental standard ISO 14001. Showing that we are committed

to continually improving our environmental footprint is an essential for us as a business and of course for future generations. This is a process that started in June 2022, and is the first step in our 3 stage Group Certification.

What are the latest advancements in surface technology and what are the benefits to your customers?

Paper foil technology has come a long way, particularly digital technology used in the creation of the artwork and the engraving of the printing cylinders. This combined with developments in lacquering technology have contributed to both the visual appeal of designs and the tactile quality of the surface.

The surface resistance of paper foils has also increased, with the majority of designs from our dp-decor range now being able to meet the FIRA 6250 and BS6222 severe use categories for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms – suitable for all applications except worktops.

We are currently investigating options for digital printing for paper foils. This would give us more design scope and the possibility of unique surface patterns for customers, with the added benefit of market testing new designs without committing to significant volumes of stock.

What introductions to the range of surface finishes can customers expect to see now and over the coming months?

As already mentioned, we have recently introduced a collection of Fineflex Metallic designs to our dp-specialist range. The PET surface is made with a percentage of recycled PET and the iridescent shimmer is visible

throughout the pigment, creating a luxurious finish to both the eye and the touch.

To meet the demand for matt unicolours, our Serica Collection is constantly evolving with brand-new colours being introduced all the time. These are following the trend for warmer shades, bringing a new energy to the collection.

Designed by Technique Architecture & Design, this new headquarters for Scotland’s oldest coffee roaster features HIMACS in Intense Ultra Dark Grey for the countertops and surfaces.

The brief for Technique architects also included a tasting room and office space, which

features HIMACS in Intense Ultra Dark Grey for the countertops, showcased to great effect thanks to the natural light flooding in through the skylight.

Trend edgings in Autumn colours

Warm plain colours, elegant decors – with the right Ostermann edgings, interiors can be given an autumnal cosy atmosphere

With Autumn around the corner, Ostermann’s experts give tips on how ABS edgings can be used to evoke the season’s cosy connotations through interior design.

Autumn is colourful, with its characteristic warm brown, red and ochre tones. When hit by the soft light of the shortening days these colours glow in a very special way. The result is a distinctive, pleasant flair that fits well into our interiors.

To make the choice of materials easier for furniture makers implementing the style, Ostermann’s experts have selected seven different edgings that reflect the autumnal atmosphere, and which can also be combined well with each other: warm earth tones, dark wood and material reproductions in textile and rust looks.

Store boards and edgings out of the cold When the days get shorter and the nights cooler, it is essential to think of sufficient time to acclimatise boards and edgings.

If they come directly from the lorry or from unheated rooms, the

materials must be stored at room temperature for at least 24 hours before processing. Otherwise, the open time of the adhesive will be compromised and the hotmelt adhesive will not establish a sufficient bond.

Ostermann tip: if there is a risk of frost, do not forget the white glue Due to its high water content, white glue cannot be shipped at freezing temperatures. It is therefore important to order sufficient supplies in time (now at the latest) according to your demand.

Ostermann’s experts recommend REDOCOL Kombicoll Super-N D2 or REDOCOL Kombicoll Super-N D3. When applied as a single component, the second variant meets the requirements of durability group D3. Sames has replaced its range of dosing/ mixing machines with a unique reference, the Cyclomix® Evo. Protected by two patents, it is distinguished by its precision and productivity, with Beta tests revealing up to 10% paint savings.

Sames previously had three 2K and 3K dosing/ mixing references, the Cyclomix® Micro, Multi and Expert. These have been replaced by a single machine, the Cyclomix® Evo. Finally, for 3K paints, a patented potlife management system divides by five the volume lost in case of production stoppage.

Revolutionise crosscutting with Salvador Traditional crosscutting is one of the most dangerous operations in any workshop.

As the industry skills shortage deepens, employers are looking for ways to keep pace with production while reduce skilled labour and maintaining a safe working environment.

For high volume production there are three Salvador models available. For 90° cutting, the Salvador SuperPush 200 and 250 models feature programmable cutting lists with optimising and defecting facility as standard.

The heavy-duty pusher runs up to 120 m/min and will process pieces up to 110 kg. The cutting time can be regulated between 0.1 to 2 seconds depending on the material with an ‘intelligent’ pressure beam adjusting to single piece and pack cutting.

Varying lengths of timber are loaded onto the static or optional chain infeed table before the machine scans and measures each piece, individually optimising the lengths to be cut to ensure maximum yield.

SuperPush

A range of out feed options are available for the SuperPush models, including waste trap door, tilt-and-return collection plane, automatic outfeed length selectors and label or inkjet printing.

For angle cutting, the Salvador SuperAngle 600 crosscut will optimise and defect angled cutting lists up to +/- 70° with a precision of +/- 0.1°. The automatic setting of each saw angle cuts takes no more than one second, positioning from 0 to 70°. As with the SuperPush models, the SuperAngle is available with chain infeed loading and automatic outfeed options depending on customer production requirements.

All Salvador automatic crosscut saws are equipped as standard with full PC control running powerful but intuitive cutting list and control software. The machine can run

in standard cut to length mode, optimising mode, or defecting mode. Cutting lists can be programmed directly at the machine or remotely from an office-based PC with files uploaded via a network connection or USB drive.

Look but don’t touch: how to get precision cut-to-length measurement

Accurate measurement of timber profiles and furniture products during processing on a conveyor has significant challenges.

Precise dimensions are, however, essential for production control and quality inspection, otherwise there may be too much giveaway and waste during manufacture, as well as unnecessary customer returns.

Conventionally, wood and furniture processors may have used measuring wheels to dimension products such as wooden panels, windows, or doors, for example. However, any method in contact with the material can lead to marks and blemishes on the end product. As an alternative measurement may be done indirectly, e.g., via a rotary encoder that tracks the conveyor speed.

Both methods are vulnerable to slippage, which can lead to inaccurate results.

Based on the workpiece size, the machine automatically selects the table field occupation, the vacuum is activated in the required area and is effective where it is needed. The areas are optimally matched to the established range of boards.

Gapless changeover between left and right table sides The vacuum fields are assigned to the table sides and can be controlled individually. While workpieces are being routed on one side of the table, they can be loaded on the other side. This makes for gapless, highly efficient production, saving time and money.

Telford based Activ Projects Ltd recently invested in a new CENTATEQ N-210 and workshop supervisor, Pete Blakelock, explained how happy they were with the nesting CNC. “The new CENTATEQ N-210 CNC processing centre is fast, efficient, and very easy to use,” he says.

Bonding PVC Foils to MDF? In order to produce PVC foil wrapped doors, membrane and vacuum presses are used.

This involves a moulded or routed MDF panel or door being sprayed with a Henkel Aquence polyurethane dispersion adhesive, which is then allowed to dry. Once the adhesive is dry, the door is then covered with a PVC foil and placed in the press, which heats the foil and applies pressure, thereby reactivating the glue line to create the perfect bond.

Henkel Aquence adhesives are designed to make this process straightfoward, creating the optimum bond between the PVC foil and the MDF, especially with high gloss foils for kitchen cabinet doors.

Manufacturers of Shaker doors may have noticed that when pressing high gloss foils, any chips, imperfections or irregularities can transfer to the surface. Sustainable commitments A recent survey conducted by packaging company, Smurfit Kappa, in partnership with the Financial Times, reported that 50 per cent of businesses claim to have tangible and ambitious plans to achieve net zero by 2050, and 61% say sustainability is changing the way they measure financial performance.

In the wood sector, leading abrasives manufacturer, Mirka, is no stranger to sustainability and highlighting its performance in 2022 through its Sustainability Report, aligned with its ‘Clean Commitments’ – a set of four global principles that embrace Performance, Partner, Production, and Proactivity – reinforces the organisation’s journey towards a more sustainable business.

Spearheaded by a €30M development funding acquired from Business Finland for the innovative SHAPE project and its ecosystem, Mirka’s head office in Jeppo is leading a major drive to be among the most sustainably advanced organisations in the world.

In 2022, Mirka invested in fossil-free electricity generated by hydropower at all its production facilities in Finland, which are now run entirely on fossil-free electricity. This also led to a 56 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions within scope 1 and 2. Mirka also installed solar panels on its production facility in Fino Mornasco in Lombardy, Italy, so that the site is entirely powered by solar energy.

Its production facilities in Jakobstad, Finland were expanded with an energy solution based on geo-energy from geothermal holes, which means the site will reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by around 900 tonnes. The company also invested in a purification and heat recovery system at its Oravais plant in Western Finland, transitioning from oil heating to recycled energy

using the extra heat by the end of the year.

In addition, air transport has been reduced by 30 per cent, and further energy solutions have been phased across several sites, leading to 70 per cent renewable energy use in Mirka’s production facilities.

But what does this mean for Mirka’s UK operation, based in Milton Keynes? “Sustainability is critical for any modern business,” comments MD, Craig Daycock. “Time and again corporate surveys have highlighted that companies that place sustainability at the heart of their organisations are valued more highly and there is a positive impact on the bottom line. So, the benefits are not just towards the environment but to the long-term goodwill and financial strength of the business.

Joinery company uses waste wood to reduce business bills A joinery company in Essex has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs.

Burton Joinery is a family business in Harlow that has been established over 40 years, and provides a bespoke joinery and laminating service. When one of the gas heaters in the workshop stopped working, directors Adam and Daryl Burton started to review the business’s heating requirements, which led to them researching wood waste heaters and finding Wood Waste Technology.

The team was impressed with the range of heaters manufactured by Wood Waste Technology at its headquarters in Staffordshire, and got in touch for more information.

After a quote and site survey, Burton Joinery ordered a WT5 heater to provide much needed heating for the workshop in winter, but also to benefit from free waste disposal of the large amount of waste wood generated from the manufacturing process.

The WT5 was installed at the 7000ft2 unit

by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, who managed to direct the heat from the burner into both of Burton Joinery’s factory units.

“Buying a wood waste heater instead of replacing the broken gas heater was a nobrainer,” Adam Burton says. “Instead of paying for a skip each month, we now only need one skip every quarter, so our waste disposal bills have reduced tremendously, saving us around £2000 a year.

“It also means we don’t have to pay to heat the factory, which is a bonus generally, but with the recent energy crisis it will have saved the business a lot of money. Everyone benefits from the investment in the burner, as it keeps us warm and reduces our business bills!”

Why you may not need as much waste as you think to become self-sufficient in heating your factory As we head towards the UK heating season, just how easy is it to make your factory self-sufficient and not reliant on oil or gas as a source of heating? Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment – continues his series of exclusive articles for Furniture & Joinery Production. This issue he looks at how little waste is needed to replace expensive oil and gas heating systems.

Industrial wood-waste has a high energy value. Man-made boards generally have a low moisture content and thus a high calorific value.

A generally accepted “yield” on industrial woodwaste is 3,200kW hours per tonne (this includes a reduction for combustion efficiency).

Let us consider a small kitchen manufacturer with an industrial unit of 10,000 ft2, for example.

If the company produces 2 tonnes per week of off-cuts and extracted dust, this can replace 6,400 kW hours. If we look at a 150-kW warm air system with an average running time of 40 hours at 50% load, this is a requirement of 3,000 kW hours. At 100% load this is only 6,000 kW hours. So, 2 tonnes per week is more than enough.

Ranheat hogger-loader

Even at 2 tonnes per week, some level of automation is required, so a small wood chipper to granulate the off-cuts and extracted material in the form of bags can be introduced into a warm air heater using a Ranheat Bag-loader.

The best solution is to utilise a silo into the system. This increases the cost but does allow the heater to run for extended overnight and weekends. This greatly increases the disposal rate, enabling a 150kW unit to dispose of 5-6 tonnes per week and a 300-kW unit 10-12 tonnes per week.

Existing floor standing “bag filters” can also be converted into a silo mounted filter system.

The bag-loader is a simple metal box with internal agitators and a screw that feeds material into a 150kW Ranheat warm air heater.

A variation on the simple bag-based system is the Ranheat hogger loader. Offcuts are simply tipped into the hopper of the hogger (woodchipper) and granulated on demand and fed into a warm air heater.

The bag-loader and the hogger loader are for use with warm air heaters and are not designed to be left running overnight or at weekends.

Whichever Ranheat system you go for, or indeed any wood-fired installation using waste wood, will still need to meet all the current regulations.

Ranheat Bag-Loader

You are still legally required to obtain planning, chimney height approval and permits to enable you to legally burn wood-waste. This can be in the form of an exemption from the EA for up to 50kgs per hour, or a permit for a SWIP or a full part B permit. Ranheat are on hand to give free assistance with obtaining these permits and permissions.
