12 EVENTS / SCM TECHNOLOGY CENTRE GRAND OPENING
SCM opens its new digital home of woodworking innovation More than 2500 visitors from all over Europe, Asia, and North and South America, visited the SCM Group headquarters in Rimini from 28-30th September to herald the company’s new Technology Centre, dedicated to the entire woodworking industry. This impressive new space has been enlarged to 4000m2 and presents technological and digital innovations for every machining requirement in the furniture industry, windows and doors production, timber construction and bespoke joinery. The extended facility has been created as part of a redevelopment plan involving an additional 11,000m2 of the Rimini
site. Other investments, totalling an increase of 20,000m2, were made to increase production efficiency at the SCM sites in Monza, Piacenza and Siena, as well as at the Villa Verucchio site of the controlled company Hiteco, which specialises in electromechanical components. The Technology Centre presents itself as the new digital home of woodworking innovation: every detail has been designed to offer the widest range of technologies and services and provide integrated, connected, flexible, more sustainable and optimised processes at each stage of secondary wood processing. The event was an opportunity to discover the
latest solutions developed by the Group which combine the strong technological skill for the production of solutions for furniture, doors and windows, timber construction and artisan joinery with the development of software and services, to accompany the client at each stage of their production process. Among the new entries, there were some applied to the CNC machining centres: Cargo, an innovative automatic system for loading and unloading doors and panels, and the new CADCAM programming software, Maestro lab. Cargo was presented integrated with the Morbidelli M200 pods&rails machining centre:

with an energy consumption of less than 0.1kWh per robot, which reaffirms the group’s focus on sustainability. For SCM, sustainability also means ergonomics and ease of use, made available to the operators of all SCM machines by the refreshed eye-M control panel, which makes the operator’s work easier and offers modular programming and a higher calculation power. Technological innovations SCM’s new Technology Centre displayed automated and connected solutions, as well as interaction systems between humans, machines, articulated robots and AMR shuttles, software and digital services. This featured a Gabbiani GT2 beam saw with articulated robot for automatic loading and unloading. It’s a flexible cell that optimises shifts and promotes the needs of machining that is both batch 1 and based on large volumes. It can be used with or without the articulated robot, with automatic switch from one modality to another. All this is enhanced by the new Maestro optiwise optimiser. Another set-up demonstrated a Sizing and Nesting Cell ideal for batch 1 with Flexstore HP automatic storage and an articulated robot for unloading finished, small and discarded pieces. This comprised a Gabbiani P80 beam saw and Morbidelli X200 nesting machining centre, both of which are integrated into the automatic warehouse that ensures storage, labelling of the panels and direct loading onto the worktable of both machines, to protect the more delicate surfaces. Simultaneously, the Gabbiani P80 beam saw can also perform pack cutting with exceptional production levels. Over at the Stefani Cell E edgebanding cell, this combines the many advantages of Stefani X industrial edgebander in terms of productivity and quality with those of an automated and flexible interaction. This happens thanks to the pick-back gantry panel return system. The

Elsewhere, the impressive Morbidelli CX220 drilling and dowelling flexible cell with robot produces all manner of furniture elements more efficiently, even with workpieces that differ considerably from one to the other. The cell produces one panel per minute and over 400 panels per shift, with one operator in 50m2. It can be used exclusively with the robot for a continuous cycle production, or with partial operator supervision. For those interested in beam saw options: on display was SCM’s Gabbiani VSI, a vertical panel saw with independent motors for the main blade and scorer, with mechanical plunging designed to make horizontal and vertical cuts on different types of wood materials. In terms of edgebanding: making its début is
the warehouse are always under control, as well as sharing information with software and company management systems. A new launch at the event was the mighty Olimpic 500plus edgebander for yet higher productivity, processing solid wood lippings up to 12mm and gluing plastic edges by using hot air technology for an invisible glue line. Also on display is the Olimpic 500 automatic compact edgebander. Versatile use of different kinds of glue, EVA and PUR and the machining of 2 real radii thanks to the Multiedge devices available on all the operating units, including the rounding unit. Also making its début was the Olimpic 300: another new edgebander for smaller enterprises. This model can perform a wide variety of processes like the 2 real radii machining with simple automatic settings, 45° chamfering and the upper and lower edge finish of the panel in different modes. For assembly, the featured Action E is now available with the new unloading loading system: a valuable aid for mounting the cabinet at the working height of the clamp and pushing it into the pressing area, as well as vertically positioning mounted cabinets and transporting them to the next work area. The Action P manual loading and unloading electro-mechanical clamp machine has also been revamped. The new operator interface (HMI) allows for even simpler and more intuitive operation and enables import and export of work programs, production data and general database. is its capability to perform a variety of machining work on both raw and painted panels. At the event in Rimini, the new 15 in Eye-S control panel was also on display, which allows management of all the sanding functions directly from the touchscreen, as well as the brand new Maestro active sand HMI which, among its new functionalities, is the ability to manage the tool storage, indicating the quantity per type of belts available in stock, and giving an automatic warning when they are about to finish. The machine was equipped with the new planetary unit, ideal for achieving a precise finish on any surface, while the GSI-200 interchangeable brushing unit has been designed for companies looking for maximum production flexibility. Making its début for DMC SD 90 is the exclusive roller unit with interchangeable rubber sleeves of different hardness. With this new configuration, the machine becomes more flexible compared to the classic two or three-unit versions, adapting to the production needs of small-medium businesses. The new unit allows to switch from calibrating operations to sanding operations of veneered and painted panels, in a matter of minutes, by simply replacing the roller’s rubber sleeve with another one of a different hardness level. This leads to a considerable reduction in machine stops for classic maintenance operations. Its compact size means this sander is ideal for being positioned even in very narrow spaces, optimising production spaces. Also on show at the Surface Lab in Villa Verucchio was the new DMC system with laser unit. This innovative unit can create threedimensional marking on parquet, wooden elements, mdf panels to be veneered, fibre cement panels and solid surfaces of any length. Some of the most innovative technologies to treat and finish the panel surface include the Sergiani 3D form press for state-of-the-art veneering of 3D panels. Superfici specialists presented the latest trends for finishing. Standing out among the new solutions digitally illustrated was the robotic spraying solution. Designed from the arm movements of an artisan worker transformed into a robot, now with eight axes for machining even larger windows and doors. The management and control systems are highly efficient, both in organisation and work operations. This guarantees the best quality standards at each spray and on every single window and door. The Valtorta Bravo2 Cartesian robot for painting panels featured two five-axis heads to deliver precision, reliability, and delicacy combined with speed and production continuity of an automatic spraying system for the highest quality For the production of windows and doors
‘Every detail has been designed to offer the widest range of technologies and services and provide integrated, connected, flexible, more sustainable and optimised processes at each stage of secondary wood processing’

Combilift family connects to celebrate 25 years in business Lifting innovation specialist Combilift, the multi-directional forklift business established in 1998 by Robert Moffett and Martin McVicar, invited their wider family including dealers, long-service employees and some of the company’s oldest customers to a party and press conference to celebrate its 25-year milestone. Sometimes companies will have a strap line appended to their logo that can be taken with a pinch of salt, you know the thing, ‘the best’ this, ‘the greatest’ that … but Combilift’s moniker of ‘Lifting Innovation’ is absolutely accurate and adroitly serves to define the business which started from a single outstanding idea, one which remains the driving force of the business today. The business began in 1998 and its first machine, the venerable C-Series, became the world’s first engine-powered multi-directional

it forms part of what today is a much wider range of lifting innovation and materials handling solutions. Naturally, as the range of products grew, Combilift’s appeal broadened to a wider variety of customers, including those working with wood, steel, plastics and advanced materials, alongside options for poultry farmers and manufacturers
negating the need for differential lock on slippery surfaces. It also significantly reduces long load momentum twisting when travelling sideways. The new Combi-Cube is another new electric model, compact and assured which features Dynamic 360 Steering. The Combi-Cube delivers seamless directional change, making it the most manoeuvrable counterbalance truck on the
of wind turbine blades for land and sea applications. More recently, the company’s move into automated guided vehicles is helping to redefine the handling landscape. At the press conference, Martin McVicar summarised the five introductions to the company’s offer this year, the company’s most prolific number of product introductions in its history. First up is the robust Combi-CB 70E, a new 7t electric truck which offers powerful performance with great battery life and unrivalled ergonomics. The impressive Combi-CB 70E comes with patented independent front and rear traction,

HPX trade show receives universal praise Some of the KBB industry’s biggest names came together at the HPX trade show in Manchester on 29th September. Organised by Hill’s Panel Products (HPP), one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers in the sector, the expo proved a valuable and productive event for exhibitors and visitors alike. Approximately 400 visitors from businesses large and small attended the day-long HPX event, which featured the latest developments and products from fittings manufacturer, Blum, chipboard manufacturer, Kronospan, EGGER, Sensio lighting, Reginox sinks, the ArtiCAD visualisation platform and VIBO wireworks and storage solutions. It was a perfect opportunity, too, for Oldhambased HPP – which makes and supplies board, doors, fittings and accessories for the fitted
reflecting the current and emerging trends for colours and tactile finishes, HPP also exhibited nine new colours of SERICA super-matt PVC board to complement the super-matt doors added to the Avanti Opus off-the-shelf collection and the made-to-measure Aspire range. The very first visitor through the door was Stephen Capel, director of Sale-based Bluebell Fitted Furniture, whose verdict echoed those of many other visitors. After spending almost two hours exploring everything HPX had to offer, he said: “I thought there would definitely be two or three stands, such as EGGER and Kronospan, that would be worth coming for alone. But on every single stand, there’s been something interesting, something that’s caught my eye – on the Sensio stand, in the Blum range. I’m going back full of ideas from every part of it.
“Our unrivalled and excellent relationships with more big-name suppliers than anyone else in the KBB industry is what makes us unique, and that was clear to see for everyone who came along,” comments Dan Mounsey, HPP’s marketing and business development director. “This was our first large-scale exhibition since the first HPX back in 2011, but we feel the industry and the marketplace is getting back to normal after all the turmoil of recent years, so it was the right time to bring all our major trading partners together. “The feedback has been unanimously positive, and we’re already being asked when we are going to do it again.” For some visitors, HPX was a light bulb moment (literally) about HPP’s range of products. Ultima Furniture turns to HOMAG for new bedroom furniture production facility
HOMAG DRILLTEQ H-600 CNC Processing Centre
With a turnover in excess of £100m, Ultima Furniture Systems has built a reputation for designing and manufacturing high-quality kitchens that don’t cost the earth. It is proud of the fact that the frames of its wooden shaker doors are made from solid kiln-dried timbers – Ultima doesn’t use laminates. The company continually invests in the latest technology and is always looking to make improvements in its processes. “Every cabinet we produce is manufactured to the same high standards,” explains Mark Gibson, production manager at Ultima Furniture. He continues, “It is something our founder, Alf Ellis, wouldn’t have any other way. His enduring fascination with manufacturing has been driving Ultima forward ever since the company began supplying customers in 1985. “We’ve been a fan of HOMAG since the very early days of the business; its machinery and software are, in our opinion, simply the best. In 2022 we purchased the assets of an office furniture company that had fallen on hard times. Its woodworking equipment was very old and unreliable, so we decided to invest in some new machinery from HOMAG. “Our aim was to buy machines that would enable us to manufacture bedroom furniture to a high standard, and at a rapid throughput. To achieve this, we were looking for an edge bander with zero-joint technology, a drilling and doweling CNC and a cabinet press.”

Reliable, high-quality machinery “Our research led us to focus on acquiring an EDGETEQ S-500 edge bander, a DRILLTEQ H-600 CNC processing centre and a CABTEQ T-250 cabinet press. HOMAG’s area sales manager, Jon Lawman, arranged for us to visit the factory in Germany to see these machines in operation prior to placing the order. Witnessing the manufacturing set-up in Germany first-hand not only enabled us to evaluate the machines we wanted to buy in action, but also acted as a reminder of how technically advanced HOMAG’s manufacturing capabilities are. “One of the key benefits of the EDGETEQ S-500 is the airTec edging facility which offers zero-joint technology. In the airTec process, the edge and panel are bonded using hot air which produces a superb, almost invisible joint. The machine gives us a high level of flexibility with outstanding trimming quality. “The DRILLTEQ H-600 impressed us with its speed and accuracy. Every drilling action is executed with extreme repeat accuracy, as are the routing and grooving operations. High throughputs are achievable because we can process two workpieces simultaneously which is a big plus for us. “Assembling cabinets so they are square and accurately aligned is vitally important when it comes to creating first-class finished bedroom furniture. That’s why we’ve invested in the HOMAG CABTEQ T-250. It not only delivers superb assembly quality to give our furniture that special finish, but it is also quick and easy to use.”
HOMAG CABTEQ T-250 cabinet press
Why we partner with HOMAG “Downtime is very costly for us and HOMAG’s excellent aftersales support is one of the main reasons we partner with them. If there is ever an issue with a machine, more often than not their engineers are able to get us back up and running via HOMAG’s online diagnostic service. “From our perspective, every aspect of HOMAG’s service is excellent. The team at Castle Donington are, to a person, friendly,
professional and proactive. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and you can count on getting an open and honest response to any query,” concludes Gibson. Mor from Weinig
Weinig UK is on something of a roll with its moulder sales. Only recently, it was involved in a full factory installation at Premier Forest Products’ Merlwood Timber site in Haverfordwest and now, Welshpool-based Morland Profiles has taken delivery of a fully equipped Weinig Powermat 1500 as part of a £1.2m capital expenditure program.
Robin Hawkins, operations director at Morland Profiles
It begs the question, what is it that’s making the Powermat 1500 the go-to moulder for medium and large-scale producers like these? We put this question and more to Robin Hawkins, Operations Director at Morland Profiles. “We manufacture wood-based joinery products that go into modular buildings and caravans,” explains Robin. “We produce laminated panels, lightweight panels, plywood and laminated wood – any colour you want – as well as skirting, architrave and mouldings for leisure and construction. These elements can then be combined into kits for specific sectors, such as certified fire doorsets or lightweight doorsets. What makes Moorland Profiles unique is that you don’t have to order a thousand units at a time. A customer can go on our website, order a single board and have it delivered.” Coupled with increased demand for Morland doors, it’s this pick-and-pack service that has resulted in the company needing to adapt its approach to manufacturing. “It’s a growing part of our business,” continues Robin. “Our batch
sizes have got a lot smaller and have become on-demand products. We needed a moulder that could keep up with our flexible and fast offering and future-proof our business in other ways, too. “We have the same problem as everyone else in our industry: a lack of skilled labour. Finding people who can set using shims and spanners is difficult. Weinig’s software allows us to build up a library of files that can be sent directly to the machine. This means we are less reliant on operator skills and because everything is held as data, we can call up any profile and be in production much quicker. If an operator leaves, it’s easy for a new one to take over without timeintensive training.” The Powermat 1500 is a remarkably versatile and adaptable moulder. Equipped with Weinig’s Comfort Set operating concept, all set-up is performed wrench-free or with the assistance of just a couple of tools, resulting in fast set-up times. Powerlock toolholders make for faster, safer tool changes, while PowerCom Plus profile and data management software means as many

as 10,000 profile data sets can be calculated, saved and recalled at the touch of a button. “We now produce over 4,000 different profiles,” confirms Robin. “Some are easy but it’s on the really difficult ones, which tend to be the smaller batches, that we’ve really seen the benefit. I would guess our set-up time on these has been reduced by something like 60%.” The tool arrangement on the Powermat 1500-026 can include up to 10 spindles ranging in power from 11kW to 30kW – two horizontal top spindles, two horizontal bottom spindles, two vertical right spindles and two vertical left spindles. All provide variable speeds between 4,000-12,000 rpm. Moorland Profiles opted to omit the first spindle but added in a universal spindle option. “We went for the universal spindle because it gave us the ability to create sculpted profiles. Having CNC settings has reduced our set-up times massively, so we are as close as we can get to having batch-size-one on a free-feed line.
Weinig moulder infeed
“There’s also a remote control at the end of the machine for the universal spindle which is set up in the tool room. The profile is sent to the control on the machine and the information is relayed to the positioning motors. The universal spindle positions automatically to the required profile set . The remote control allows the operator to monitor the set up.” With a variable feed speed of 5-40 m/min, it means that even when running at higher feed speeds, Robin is guaranteed a fine finish as well as increased production, even when running the larger profiles of 230mm wide and 160mm high that the Powermat 1500 can handle. “We’ve seen a 40% increase in the production of our profiles over the last year and the majority of that went through the moulder. Having that additional resource has made manufacturing a lot easier. To get the same results on a manual machine, we’d have to put on a night shift. “We bought the machine at just the right time. We knew that batch sizes were going down – we could see that trend a long way off – and that was the main reason for buying the Powermat. We managed to get it installed and get the guys trained up on it, so we were ready to move at just the right time. “We are now producing about 120 kilometres of mouldings per week and that could easily increase to 220 or 240. Before we got the new Powermat, we were only able to produce 60 kilometres.” A £1.2m capital expenditure program has resulted in Moorland Profiles changing many of its process and that’s increased manufacturing
Universal spindle
efficiency across the board. The new moulder has made a significant contribution and, although Robin admits nobody likes change, his operators have taken to it easily: “The machine and its operating software is pretty straightforward to use,” he says. “We had some training on site as well as at Weinig UK and a couple of months later, we had some top up training. The software is very similar to what we’ve used on our CNC’s and edgebanders – it’s very straightforward. It is a different way of working but we have a really good team. They adapted to it quickly. “As business grows, replacing two older Weinig moulders with similar CNC-set machines is a high priority. There’s no doubt about it, it’s made enough of a difference for us to be sure it was the right choice.” To find out how a Weinig machine could help enhance your production, call Weinig UK on 01235 557600 or visit www.weinig.co.uk

Clean while you machine – boost productivity with Biesse’s T-JET
“Cleaning whilst machining is a simple enough concept, but designing a rotating air jet system that can keep up with the tool as it changes direction and turns corners is no mean engineering feat”
CNC MACHINERY 37
By cleaning the cut line as the dust is produced, Biesse’s award-winning T-JET dust mitigation solution, available on Rover three-axis flat table CNCs, increases finishing quality, prolongs tool life and boosts process efficiency by accelerating job turnaround. Don’t let the dust settle Dust is an unavoidable feature of any panelbased machining application and must be contained for obvious health and safety reasons. Once it is airborne, it becomes an occupational hazard, which is why it is best controlled at the source. Machine protection is another reason for controlling dust during the CNC operation – if it contaminates electrical components or settles on vital mechanical parts it can, over time, without proper maintenance, cause costly damage. Then there is the all-important finish – if the tool must plough through a layer of dust, it can affect the quality of the cut. Cleaning sucks … and costs The usual approach to dust removal in CNC operations is to add a sweeping arm and an offloading table. The sweeping arm sits on the back of the machine and transfers the panel onto an adjoining table, while cleaning the bed with an extraction manifold. Aside from occupying additional floor space,
the downside of this arrangement is that the sweeping arm does not remove the dust from inside the channels or the sides of the panel. This means that after offloading the panels, the operator must spend time vacuuming the machine bed and the panels. Over the course of a week, this cleaning time can add up to several hours. Biesse’s T-JET offers a simple yet unique solution to this problem. How does it work? A set of high-pressured nozzles are mounted to the rotating C-axis and, using the compressed air veins that an aggregate would use, follows the cut line, dislodging any dust that has settled in the cutting channel. As soon as it becomes airborne, the dust is removed by the extraction system that sits over the spindle, so that channels and the side surfaces of the pieces are totally clean. Award-winning technology Cleaning whilst machining is a simple enough concept, but designing a rotating air jet system that can keep up with the tool as it changes direction and turns corners is no mean engineering feat. In this respect, T-JET represents a breakthrough solution – an achievement that was recognised in 2022 when Biesse received the IWF 2022 Challengers Award for T-JET.
Faster turnaround between jobs Using the T-JET rather than a sweeping arm to clean the panel (and the table) not only saves on floor space by reducing the overall machine footprint, but it also saves on time. With targeted dust collection at the point of production, no further cleaning of the flat bed is required. This can amount to considerable efficiency gains as the operator can simply offload the panels and start the next programme straight away, rather than having to clean the bed between programmes using a vacuum cleaner or sweeping arm. From a health and safety perspective, T-JET protects workers by limiting the amount of dust that enters the working environment. Longer tool life There are also secondary advantages to using T-JET technology: the airflow keeps the tool cool, reducing the amount of stress on the spindle, which ultimately extends the life of the tool. Cleaner cutting path Unimpeded by dust, the saw blade can travel smoothly and perform a cleaner cut, with less likelihood of chipping. With effective suction guaranteed even at high feed speeds, this results in unprecedented finishing quality. Energy-efficient dust removal And, at a time when energy costs are a major concern, T-JET represents the most energyefficient method of removing and containing dust. There is no need for an additional compressed air supply as T-JET will work on the standard pressure available on the machine. The rotating action of T-JET is powered by an additional high-speed motor, but as the motor is very lightweight and servo-controlled, it uses very little energy – far less than a sweeping arm. The T-JET and the tool rotate independently of one another, which means T-JET can be turned off to save energy when it is not required. T-JET is classed as an aggregate or deflector, so it can be removed from the machine altogether. Pledge Office Chairs boosts productivity and reduces waste with VWM solution Pledge Office Chairs Ltd is one of the UK’s leading office seating manufacturers. Established in 1970, the company has grown from a relatively small family-ran affair into a major national supplier. With a solid team of 140 staff members, Pledge Office Chairs has been a name synonymous with quality for over 50 years. However, in recent years, the team found themselves dealing with a substantial amount of waste, increased power consumption, higher energy costs and general inefficiencies in their technology and operations. This prompted senior operations manager,
Steve Pearce, to look for an alternative to the older technologies and machines that they had been using. VWM proved the perfect solution to the company’s requirements. After speaking with the Pledge Office Chairs team, VWM was able to recommend a newer CNC Machine that had advanced capabilities to enhance their daily operations. This was fitted and installed shortly thereafter – and the positive feedback was almost immediate. “Prior to reaching out to VWM, we were using old technologies to cut and finish the wood”, explains Steve Pearce. “The new machine
seemed to be exactly what we were looking for – and we were highly impressed by the team’s professionalism and efficiency. “Once installed and fitted, the impact of our new CNC wood-cutting machinery was immediate and profound. We suddenly found that we had reduced our production waste, increased operational efficiency, and enhanced the standard and accuracy of our work. “We’re using significantly less manpower to operate our machines, too – which means we’ve been able to save a great deal of time and put our team members to better use elsewhere. All in all, we couldn’t be happier!” www.vwm.co.uk

“This is the most exciting abrasive development for the wood sector in many years” Ultimax® Ligno combines innovation with robust consideration for the environment. The production method reduces energy consumption as the process for curing the glue is more efficient. It also has superior adhesion with VOC-free resin, ensuring a safer and healthier choice for both users and the environment. Its ceramic has been mixed with Blue Fired Alox grains, meaning that the abrasive’s surface channels serve as pathways to direct the smooth movement of wood fibres to extraction holes, preventing clogging and enhancing
sanding quality. In fact, it accelerates sanding operations by maintaining the cleanliness of abrasive grains for uninterrupted cutting and prevents the formation of a ‘blanket’ of dust between the grains and the sanded surface. The abrasive also makes use of a specially developed latex-impregnated paper to improve flexibility and adhesion and to control edgewear, extending its lifespan. Ultimax® Ligno is available in a wide range of grits, from 40 to 400 in discs, strips and soft rolls. The abrasive features a Multifit™ hole pattern which eliminates the requirement for
precise alignment, as it is always correctly fitted to match the dust extraction holes. “This is the most exciting abrasive development for the wood sector in many years,” says Neil Newbrook, business sector manager – wood, Mirka (UK). “Through extensive testing, the R&D team discovered that the ‘hourglass’ shape’s optimal cutting performance for wood sector substrates ensures exceptional sanding results, from start to finish.” For more information visit – https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=PoHXWe44q60 www.mirka.com

Consistency, labour saving and low price: the Gibbs Cup Brush de-nibber – a British success story Gibbs Sandtech is aspiring for its own miniindustrial revolution, by taking the pain out of a manual, labour-intensive job: preparation sanding and de-nibbing. The company’s new computer-controlled automated de-nibbing “Cup Brush” machine is a clear winner, especially with a unit price “lower than the one member of staff’s yearly salary”. Designed and built in Gibbs Sandtech’s factory, tucked away in the leafy Hertfordshire countryside, the Cup Brush Sealer Sander is the culmination of almost 60 years’ worth of expertise in manufacturing machines for the woodworking industry and has proved by far its most successful product. The machine gets its name from the system of multiple rotating “Cup-Brushes” mounted on an oscillating carriage. This simple system allows the Cup Brush to achieve 360-degree sanding, which is perfect for tricky items, like traditional slab and shaker doors or window frames. The abrasive fingers work their way into all the grooves and crevices, gently removing fibres and paint nibs much faster and more consistently than sanding by hand. The machine even includes a roto blow bar on the out feed, so panels come out dust free and ready to spray, saving yet more time and effort. However, far from being a “one-trick pony”, the Cup Brush machine is one of the most versatile machines on the market today. For example, Gibbs offers a souped-up version of the Cup Brush with stronger motors capable of wire brushing, perfect for distressing wood for a rustic look. Incredibly, thanks to the 360-degree sanding from the Cup Brush system, you can enhance the grain running in multiple directions on a five-piece door in one pass. Since the Cup Brush De-Nibber’s inception
eight years ago, well over 110 units have been sold worldwide. From small family-run workshops taking their first foray into automated machinery to large multinationals looking to increase their production, the Cup Brush has found a niche with businesses looking for a costeffective machine that does not compromise on capability. This year has seen some exciting new developments as the fifth-generation Cup Brush hits the market. Almost totally redesigned from the ground up, the new model builds on the core strengths of the original design and takes an already capable machine to a whole new level. A welcome new addition is the touch screen PLC.
Users can now save and recall their settings to one of six programs, allowing them to achieve consistent results every time. Brush changes are now even easier thanks to the redesigned chassis. Larger access doors and a rolling brush carriage that can slide out of either side of the machine enable clear access underneath the carriage. If you’re looking to automate your workflow, then a Cup Brush Sealer Sander could be just the right machine for the job. Contact Gibbs Sandtech for more information, or a demonstration of the Cup Brush Sealer Sander. 01920 822 404 info@gibbsfinishing.com

Blum – the right components for the right space
Pots and lids neatly stored at the hob
Quality fittings and components are integral when planning kitchens. With the lifetime of a kitchen standing at about 20 years, a lifetime guarantee from Blum means you can rest assured that the moving parts will not fail. Blum has been at the forefront of fittings and components since 1952, and as a leading name in precision-engineered fittings, drawer runners, boxes, inserts, pull-outs and lift systems, Blum knows all about making the most of a kitchen.
An extra-wide drawer means no wasted space between two 600mm drawers
Wider, deeper and higher base units mean that every inch of the kitchen is used. Drawers in base units provide so much more accessible storage that fewer wall units may be required, leading to a functional, lighter, airier kitchen. A 1200mm drawer provides 15% more storage than two 600mm drawers, as there is no wasted space between the two. With Blum’s lifetime guarantee and dedication to perfecting motion, you can be sure that the drawer will not sag over time.
1200mm wide SPACE TOWER provides an enormous amount of easily accessible storage
Blum’s SPACE TOWER, featuring LEGRABOX, is a perennial favourite. It provides instant access from three sides and can store up to an impressive 250kg in one unit. With individual pull-out drawers, no void is necessary above the drawer, thus increasing the amount of storage. Clever storage and fittings are at the forefront of kitchen design. After the wow factor of a good-looking kitchen has worn off, the useability of the kitchen for the next 10-20 years becomes all-important, and so too do fittings that last the kitchen’s lifetime. Internal organisation such as Blum’s AMBIALINE and ORGA-LINE systems, mean that all items in drawers are instantly visible, and accessible. Gone is the muddle and frustration of finding small implements buried under cables and general junk. Everything is in its place. 01908 285700 www.blum.com

How can Rivet T-Nuts give furniture manufacturers a competitive edge? Manufacturers are often challenged to improve and eliminate issues that can occur after a product leaves the factory. There are limited opportunities to make a lasting difference to the quality of a workshop’s output, without making substantial design changes. One simple change that has a proven record of lasting and consistent improvement is switching from an insert or standard T-Nut to a Rivet T-Nut. When connecting components
For example, sofa manufacturers often have the costly and time-consuming problem of remedying a pushed-out T-Nut in the castor application. Jet Press has helped some of the UK’s best-known furniture industry names to eradicate this issue, saving thousands of pounds in the process by switching to Rivet T-Nuts. Jet Press has the experience to offer advice and run tests to make sure customers get the optimum fittings for the job. Kevin Parr, the

Hoffmann - ensuring all-round safety in fire door production Fire doors are generally “measured and certified” in terms of FD30, FD60, FD90 and FD120. This indicates the length of time that the door can maintain its integrity when heat is applied. In the UK, the minimum resistance level for a fire door should be 30 minutes, which is FD30. This allows sufficient time for someone to vacate a building in the event of a fire and for emergency crews to attend. When installing fire doors, all component parts are essential in ensuring the door maintains its integrity. Hoffmann Dovetail Keys are an integral part of many fire doors. They have been accredited with FD30 / FD60 fire safety ratings

for securing the joints in vision panel cassettes. Hoffmann keys have also been successfully tested in composite fire door blanks and solid wood door frames. In order to produce quality Fire Doors consistently and efficiently, safe, accurate and reliable machinery is also required to ensure the well-being of the operator. Hoffmann MS 35, and MS 35-SF machines help to create this safe working environment.
“Production of the vision panels has increased by roughly 20% since having the Hoffmann machinery installed
“We currently use the Hoffmann MS 35-SF to produce glazing bead cassettes for our fire doors and glazed screens,” comments branch manager, Mitch Johnson, Door and Joinery Solutions. Using the Hoffmann jointing system not only improves the process by simplifying

it, but it has also increased the quality of the finished joint and the speed at which it is produced. “Because the joints are so accurate and secure, there is no filling required on the joints before spraying, and the cassettes can be lacquered before fitting into the door. “Production of the vision panels has increased by roughly 20% since having the Hoffmann machinery installed. We were so pleased with the quality of the Hoffmann system that we bought a second Hoffmann MS 35-SF machine as our business expanded.”

Hoffmann Dovetail Keys
Process The workpiece is laid on the table and positioned for cutting. The start button is pressed to begin the machine cycle and the profile is clamped. Both saw units cycle from above to make the mitre cuts. The parts remain clamped whilst the tables open, allowing the router units to rout one or two dovetail slots for jointing with Hoffmann Keys, sizes W-1/2/3. The machine tables close, clamping is released and the finished workpiece is removed. The next machine cycle begins. The Machine Safety Guard closes automatically after starting the processing cycle and re-opens when complete. A Clear vision panel retains the dust and scrap end, for better operator comfort. A Fence stop system is also available for longer profiles up to 4000mm. The Hoffmann MS 35-SF can be used solely as a Double Mitre Saw, to cut to length profiles such as glazing beads, cornices plinths etc. in wood, aluminium, and plastic at 45° angles. As well as producing mitre joints, the Hoffmann MS 35-SF can also be integrated with a cross-cut saw to make the square cut when manufacturing three-part door architraves.
Further special improvements were made to the Double Mitre Combination machine, MS 35SF. The Hoffmann design team developed technology which reduces the vibrations created on the saw blades. This increased the precision and accuracy of both mitre cuts so that no further work was required prior to joining. This uncompromising accuracy is particularly important when the finished surface joint is visible. This high-quality cut, and highquality routing is achieved by almost vibration-free running of the machine, the main casting of which is extremely robust and weighs about 700kg. A chip breaker provides a chip-free cut. Another feature is the immediately noticeable and extremely low noise level. The range has now evolved to include the MS 40-SF. With a larger saw blade (400mm), the cutting width increases to 105mm and a new waste ejector automatically removes off cuts at the front of the unit. Automatic router positioning is also available via NC axis and touchscreen adjustment. 01524 841500 info@hoffmann-uk.com www.hoffmann-uk.com

Unique knot-filling system to restore damaged wood The Knottec® system is a fast and efficient way to repair knot defects and other forms of deep wood damage, and is endorsed by Bairds Windows Ltd. “Knots and deep scratches in wood can be filled quickly and easily using this special knotfilling product that is applied with a 12mm Tec hot melt glue gun,” explains Malcolm Baird, production director at Bairds Windows. “We would highly recommend this product.” Bairds Windows provides a range of timber windows, doors and conservatories manufactured from soft wood, hard wood and Accoya, as well as PVC-u. The company switched from repairing knots and damage using a two-part filler to using the Knottec® knot and wood repair filler. The filler proved the superior choice because it does not sag into the screw holes and, once cleaned off, the product does not require much sanding, which saves valuable time.

HOMAG’s ultra-compact DRILLTEQ V-310 vertical CNC processing centre If space is a major issue in your production facility then the latest vertical CNC processing centre from HOMAG, the DRILLTEQ V-310, could be just what you’re looking for. The design brief for this advanced machine was to incorporate as much functionality as possible in as small a space as possible. “The new DRILLTEQ V-310 vertical CNC really is a space miracle,” claims HOMAG UK managing director, Simon Brooks. “With a footprint of just 11m2, it offers more drilling (up to 45 drilling spindles), more grooving (two groove saws), a dowel unit and more trimming than any other machine in its class. Despite the compact nature of the V-310, it can still handle panels up to 1,250mm in width and 80mm in thickness. “Attention has also been focused on energyefficient processing, with the vacuum-free clamping system not only saving energy, but also providing fast setup times. “A number of ‘plug & play’ automation add-ons are available to extend machine running time, including the FEEDBOT D-310 robot feeder and a return conveyor. These additions virtually eliminate manual parts handling and reduce the need for more machine operators.” A wide range of configurations for any application The DRILLTEQ V-310 offers a great choice of drilling heads, including a twin head configuration which can perform row hole drilling in half the time on certain panels. The machine can be specified for routing with automatic tool changing in the standard three-axis format or additionally, it is possible to choose a four-axis model to permit the use of aggregates for horizontal routing, sawing,
corner notching and even traced surface routing. As a further option, it is possible to select an automatic dowel gluing and insertion unit to allow panels to be fully processed within one cycle. HOMAG’s safety concept HOMAG’s safeScan technology enables optimum interaction between operator and machine. At the infeed and outfeed there is a scanner which is triggered as soon as the machine operator approaches to within 900 mm of the loading or unloading area. A highly efficient feature of the technology is the automatic continuation of production as soon as the operator leaves the area. No confirmation or restart of processing is required due to the Autoquit feature. Next generation control with powerTouch 2 Controlling the DRILLTEQ V-310 is faster and more intuitive with the latest control system, powerTouch 2. The new, modern design has a clear structure with an innovative touch operation. Compared to the previous version, you can achieve a time saving of up to 30%. This is possible due to new features, such as automatic word completion, a pop-up keyboard that can be kept open and Windows-like functions, such as the selection of common actions directly via the start button. Manage tools easily and quickly with the twinio web app With the twinio app tool management is easy and quick. Different functions ensure an overview of the statuses and storage locations
of the tools is always available. Important maintenance, such as tool sharpening is simple to schedule with just one click. The app provides historical data in a graphical format of how tools have performed after previous sharpening cycles, presenting information to improve future performance. Automation with the FEEDBOT D-310 robot Automating the material handling has many benefits, including low maintenance operation, highly flexible production and the elimination of health and safety issues that come with manual handling. With a sensitive floating crosshead to ensure gentle handling of parts, the FEEDBOT D-310 can handle large variances in workpiece size. It has a ‘plausibility check’ which compares data from the control to the actual part. Using woodFlex the setup of the complete cell (CNC and robot) can be handled automatically with visual confirmation on screen. Utilised in a cell, the FEEDBOT increases overall productivity. It can work around the clock and ensures consistently high-quality results. It saves a lot of time, reducing the workload for production staff. This enables the workforce to be moved to more value-added activities in the manufacturing process. “The DRILLTEQ V-310 is a significant milestone in the design of small-footprint vertical CNCs,” concludes Simon Brooks. “The number of functions incorporated in this compact model are amazing. When it was presented to the trade last year it caused a real buzz and no doubt there will be high demand for it in the UK market.” For more information or a demonstration of machines in the HOMAG range of vertical CNC processing centres or any other HOMAG machinery and software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424. 01332 856424 info-uk@homag.com www.homag.com

Aimee Fletcher and the Decor Management team at EGGER, have pulled together an impressive collection of design-led decors to meet the ever-changing demands of multifunctional interiors. “The world is a different place since we launched our previous Decorative Collection in February 2020,” says Aimee. “Interiors have changed dramatically, in parallel with customer priorities. I am pleased to say that our new collection is extremely versatile and can adapt to the fast pace of change. “Created with our customers in mind, we are confident our new decor and texture introductions will set the stage for modernday furniture and interior design. From kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, to student accommodation, hotels and retail spaces, our library of designs will support our customers no matter what they are working on.
“Using the best available technology, we’ve upgraded several decors using more realistic textures. However, the one that stands out for 2024 has to be the Matt. Smooth, velvety and luxurious, Matt textures are highly desirable. We’ve upgraded the surface and updated the decors available in our PerfectSense range, and for the first time we’ll be offering matt textured woodgrains. “We are finding consumers are focused on investing in quality at the right price. They have re-evaluated what’s important following the pandemic, and are looking to break away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. “A natural approach is what people want, to escape from an over-digitalised world. Decors are warm and cosy, neutral and natural, calm and quiet, contributing towards glamourous escapism that feels homely and stylish, rather than stark or bright. In contrast, we’re seeing rich and dark decors creating relaxed yet opulent interiors. “Pastel colours are more powerful than ever. Natural green and earthy red tones are helping people get closer to nature as they strive to bring the outside in. Layers of pastel tones help to create a calm, relaxing sanctuary. “The evolution of material finishes offers a stylish yet natural accent. Traditionally offered as slates, stones, and marbles, there is a clear shift towards metallics that ooze luxury and are very close to real material finishes. “The mix-andmatch approach is standing strong as people have more confidence in their own design aspirations. This was a key consideration when selecting the final cut, as we’ve made sure that decors will transfer into multiple interior styles, and work in numerous combinations.”
Aimee Fletcher
“Our PerfectSense, Feelwood and Worktop ranges have been refreshed. They still include some old favourites, but lots of new decors and finishes have been added, to revitalise our offering and in turn our customers’ collections. “I can’t wait to start sharing the new collection with our customers in February, and listen to their design ideas for our new decors and textures. The collection encompasses Eurodekor-faced chipboard and medium-density fibreboard, laminate, edging, and worktops, and will be available from February 2024 via our network of UK distributors. “To get a flavour of what’s to come in the new collection, sign in or register for myEGGER and order a decor taster pack via the online shop.” to.egger.link/decorative-collection

Ostermann unveils Glass-Line 40 roller shutter The Ostermann range of furniture roller shutters has expanded with the addition of the ready-to-mount Glass-Line 40 roller shutter. This elegant, transparent design is made to measure and supplied ready-to-mount with quick delivery times. The box fits into any furnishing concept, thanks to the modern mat with 40mm high glass slats, the large selection of glasses, and the filigree guide rails. The version with dark float glass slats and black guide rails is very chic, especially if the cabinet is illuminated from the inside. Tradesmen can find all the information on the new roller shutter box under the search term “#GlassLine” on the Ostermann website – www. ostermann.eu. Lots of glass – lots of design To individualise the mat, there are slats available in seven glass colours. In addition to lacquered float glass, you can obtain satin or transparent glass. Guide rails and the pilaster strip are available in silver- or stainless steel-coloured and in black.
“The box fits into any furnishing concept, thanks to the modern mat with 40mm high glass slats, the large selection of glasses, and the filigree guide rails” Made to measure Furniture makers can customise the new furniture roller shutter box at Ostermann for either wall- or top-mounted cabinets, as well as for an internal surface-mounted or front-mounted installation. The box is then made to measure and shipped ready to mount. For other mats and systems, you can also order individual components made to measure in the Ostermann configurator and fit them yourself later. Furniture roller shutters – Ostermann diversity In addition to the glass roller shutters, there are many other furniture roller shutters available at Ostermann. Striking and of particularly high quality are the jointless Wood-Premium mats or the Wood-Designflex mats suitable for negative radii. Both are made of triple-glued plywood with a real wood overlay. A robust variant for
high loads is the Alu-XL system made of solid aluminium. For lower loads, the Alu-Light systems with solid aluminium slats or Poly-Metallic made of plastic with real aluminium overlay are sufficient. If you are looking for on-trend colours, Poly-Color 15 or Poly-Color 25mm are the best choice. A tip from Ostermann If the transparent glass slats of the Glass-Line 40 box are to be backlit, Ostermann also offers furniture makers suitable furniture luminaires. Numerous lighting profiles, LED strips, spots and linear luminaires are available. For those carpenters/cabinet makers who prefer not to configure their furniture roller shutters online, Ostermann’s experts are also happy to provide advice and assistance by telephone. www.ostermann.eu

New SERICA super-matt panels & doors added to HPP board offer Leading KBB company, Hill’s Panel Products (HPP), is adding a new collection of super-matt PVC finishes to its board range as the trend for matt finishes goes from strength to strength. Nine new colours of SERICA super-matt PVC surfaces are being added to the HPP board offer that already features in-house cut and edged melamine-faced chipboard (MFC) as well as products from Egger and Kronospan. SERICA is an ideal solution for all types of furnishings in kitchens, bedrooms and other locations such as offices and retail environments. The foil is laminated to both sides of the board, which is not currently available on many other super-matt boards on the market. The new colours made their HPP debut at its HPX trade show at the Village Hotel, Manchester, at the end of September, and will complement the super-matt doors recently introduced into HPP’s Avanti Opus off-the-shelf doors collection, as well as some in the made-to-measure Aspire collection.
“Introducing the SERICA panels opens the door to more opportunities to satisfy the market’s demand for matt finishes,” comments Chris Essex, HPP’s nationwide sales manager. “Existing customers are already asking for it to go with the SERICA colours in our door range, and it’s an opportunity to attract new customers by plugging a hole in our board range.” SERICA’s on-trend, contemporary colour palette incorporates solid colour right through to the core, so there are no unsightly joint lines. It has an anti-fingerprint silky touch finish and is highly scratch-resistant. And in the case of microscratches, SERICA can be easily repaired by using an iron or hairdryer to renovate the surface. “In today’s market, SERICA is a high-quality
finish, and it is an end panel that will work with many of our other doors,” says Chris. “But there is a double benefit, because we can sell it to people who make doors, who will cut and edge it themselves, and we will have it as part of our door offering, which we can sell per door as part of a larger set.” The nine super-matts being introduced are Cashmere, Frost White, Graphite, Indigo Blue, Kombu Green, Kobe, Light Grey, Monument Grey and Sage Green. Oldham-based HPP, which also has a trade counter in Sheffield, manufactures and supplies board, doors, fittings and accessories to the fitted kitchen and bedroom industry. www.hpponline.co.uk

Efficient ductwork design with Nordfab Efficient ductwork design maintains a comfortable indoor environment and minimises energy costs for any type of joinery. Here, Nordfab delves into the world of ductwork design, revealing how its intelligently engineered components enhance airflow efficiency and lead to substantial energy savings. The role of ductwork in woodworking settings Ductwork serves as the circulatory system of an industrial facility, transporting air, dust, and other particles from one location to another. It plays a key role in maintaining proper indoor air quality, ensuring the efficient removal of sawdust and airborne particles to maintain a clean and safe working environment. However, inefficient ductwork design can lead to various challenges, including increased energy consumption, decreased system performance, and higher maintenance costs. Enhancing airflow efficiency with Nordfab’s components Nordfab’s carefully engineered ductwork components reflect the company’s commitment to innovation and efficiency. These components are designed to streamline airflow, minimise pressure drop, and ultimately lead to significant energy savings. Here’s how Nordfab achieves this: 1. Quick-Fit ducting system Nordfab’s QuickFit ducting system is a game-changer in ductwork design. The system’s modular components feature a unique clip-together design that eliminates the need for rivets, screws, or welding. This seamless construction reduces air leakage, ensuring airtight connections and maintaining consistent airflow throughout the ductwork.
2.
3.
4.
Smooth interior surfaces Nordfab’s components boast smooth interior surfaces, which reduce friction and turbulence as air flows through the ducts. This results in less resistance and pressure drop, allowing air to move more freely and efficiently. Optimised transitions and fittings Nordfab’s carefully engineered transitions, elbows, and fittings are designed to minimise airflow disruptions and promote smooth directional changes. This minimises turbulence and pressure loss, enabling better airflow distribution and more efficient operation. Leak-free connections Air leakage can lead to energy wastage and decreased system efficiency. Nordfab’s components are precision-engineered to create leak-free connections, preventing air from escaping and ensuring that conditioned air reaches its intended destination.
“These components are designed to streamline airflow, minimise pressure drop, and ultimately lead to significant energy savings” Reducing Energy Costs By using Nordfab’s components when designing and installing a ductwork design, woodworking joineries can experience substantial energy savings: 1. Lower energy consumption The improved airflow efficiency and reduced pressure drop offered by Nordfab’s components mean that the process ventilation system doesn’t need to work as hard to maintain desired conditions, resulting in reduced energy consumption. 2. Decreased operating costs A more efficient ductwork system reduces operating costs over time. As energy usage decreases, so does the associated financial burden. 3. Long-term sustainability The energy savings achieved by using Nordfab’s components contribute to the overall sustainability of the industrial facility. By optimising ductwork design, companies can reduce their environmental footprint and demonstrate their commitment to responsible resource management. Efficient ductwork design is a cornerstone of industrial efficiency and sustainability. Nordfab’s expertly engineered components, part of its Quick-Fit ducting system, are key in enhancing airflow efficiency, reducing pressure drop, and ultimately leading to substantial energy savings. 01132 739 400 www.nordfab.com

Edgebander training & support from Daltons Wadkin Leading machinery supplier Daltons Wadkin has expanded its engineering support and training services to cover edgebanders from SCM, Felder, Homag, Holz-Her and other manufacturers. “Thanks to our unwavering dedication to customer support and aftercare, the demand on our service department continues to grow year on year,” enthuses Daltons Wadkin service director, Cliff Sharp. “As a company, we prioritise keeping pace with customer requirements and exceeding expectations. “We are continually investing in new talent, expanding our regionally based team of mechanical and electrical engineers while continuing the training and development of existing staff.” New to the Daltons Wadkin service team is edgebander veteran, Shaun Hill. Shaun completed his apprenticeship at SCM and has also gained considerable experience on Felder edgebanders, carrying out installations and service work across the UK and Ireland. Shaun will be the first of two edgebander specialists joining the service team this autumn. “We are continually investing in new talent, expanding our regionally based team of mechanical and electrical engineers, while continuing the training and development of existing staff,” continues Cliff.
To help ensure consistent quality and reliable output from any edgebander, four key areas need regular attention: servicing, setup, tooling and training. To this end, Daltons Wadkin has developed a unique offering of tiered services designed to address these critical aspects. Stage 1 – service This includes electrical, pneumatic and mechanical checks to ensure the correct and safe operation of the machine. Cleaning of air filters, motor fans, tracks and drive gears. Greasing of linear bearings, checking glue pot condition and other critical points. Identifying/advising of any parts, which for any edgebander are vital to limit downtime and prevent breakdowns. Stage 2 – setup With the current tooling inside the machine, Daltons Wadkin takes a step-by-step approach to the set-up of your edgebander for all materials being edged. Focusing on pre-milling adjustment, glue application, deflection on all units ensuring a consistent finish, end trimming saw adjustment for both flush and angled cuts, rough and fine trimming adjustment, corner round set up including pressures/speeds, setting up the radius scrapers to give a smooth radius, and finally making sure that the glue scrapers, buffers and spray units are giving the best finish possible. Stage 3 – tool change Changing the tooling following a service and setup is crucial to keeping the finishing quality high. This includes changing the pre miller blocks (or tips), end trim saws, rough and fine cutter tips,
Edgebander veteran, Shaun Hill
corner round profile tooling (or multi-radius), radius scrapers, glue scrapers and buffer pads. After all the tooling is changed the units are set up, giving a perfect finish, radius with no chatter marks and smooth corners. Stage 4 – training For the novice and experienced learners, the focus is on key functions of the machine, correct setting, adhesive identification, correct tooling set-up, safe working practices, identifying hazards, troubleshooting advice and full practical assessment. “Edgebander servicing needs a specialist approach,” continues Cliff. “Our staged support package allows us to work with customers, addressing their specific needs while aligning to a strict protocol so nothing is left to chance.” As with all service visits carried out by Daltons Wadkin, customers can expect a detailed report of work completed with any recommended remedial work. Service reports are stored in a secure cloud platform along with any breakdown reports, building up a historical maintenance record for your equipment. 0115 986 5201 info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

Ostermann unveils unique new Moss surface
Ostermann provides furniture makers with three different colours of their new Moss natural surface
In line with the trend towards natural and sustainable surfaces, Ostermann has just launched a new natural surface called “Moss”. An eye-catching design within private interiors, public buildings and retail shops alike, the flexible panels with an overlay of real, naturally preserved moss, are supplied reliably and quickly by Ostermann in three colours. Moss is a unique natural product. In the forest, the natural water reservoir and filter is an important part of an intact ecosystem. Its intense colour, unique look and soft feel also make it an interesting material for the design of interiors or sales areas. Ostermann’s new “Moss” natural surface allows carpenters/ cabinet makers to apply real moss in private or commercial interiors. It comes in three shades of green and on a flexible carpet backing measuring 580 x 380mm. The moss panels score with their natural properties, such as sound absorption of up to 60% and humidity regulation in the room. They can easily be attached to furniture, walls
or ceilings and, thanks to their flexibility, can also be used for demanding applications in shopfitting and trade fair construction. All information on this product can be found under the search term “#moss” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann.eu. In addition, the company sends original samples on request. 100% natural moss – 100% handmade, 100% maintenance-free The moss used is gently harvested with environmental protection and sustainability in mind. It is then cleaned and prepared. UV-resistant, cosmetic colours produce the product’s beautiful and intense colour. The entire process, from harvesting to processing and dispatch, is carried out 100% by hand. Once the finished moss has been applied to the substrate, it requires no water and no further care. It is hygienic and antibacterial and is therefore even suitable for the catering sector. The moss also regulates the air humidity naturally. Room
humidity should be between 40% and 70%. Simple processing The moss panels are delivered individually packed in cardboard. They can be cut quickly and easily with scissors or a cutter knife and optionally stapled or screwed. The moss surface can be enlarged at will by joining several panels together and, to create a special impression, different shades can be combined on one object. Ostermann tip Ostermann also provides a fitting cutter knife for the moss panels, as well as matching spare blades. The cutter knife with blade lock has a particularly sharp and sturdy blade, which is made exclusively from SK-120 premium steel. A unique, multi-stage sharpening technique is used in the production. It is therefore also ideal for cutting gypsum plasterboard, wood, and other thick materials. www.ostermann.eu

Wood Waste Heater saves money, whilst helping paint dry! A construction company for creative industries has purchased a wood waste heater, to reduce its waste disposal costs and keep its workshop warm and functional during the winter months. Take 1 Scenic, based in Greater Manchester, manufactures scenery, sets and stages for TV, film and theatre. Its team of carpenters, scenic painters, welders and prop-makers work at the company’s head office in Stalybridge. The company uses large quantities of wood in its production, and whilst the business tries hard to minimise its wood waste, there is inevitably a large amount created.
When director, Carl Heston, joined the business a few years ago, he was surprised to find Take 1 Scenic didn’t have a wood waste heater. After doing some research and speaking with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology, the company ordered a WT15 heater that Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers installed. The investment has made many positive differences to the business. The wood waste heater keeps the workshop warm, even on really cold days, which means the business is saving money by not having to use its wall-mounted
directional gas burners. The business is also saving money on recycling costs. Take 1 has always been conscious of the environmental impact of the industry, and in the past its wood waste was transported to recycling centres for disposal. The company is now saving money on the labour, transport and recycling costs incurred in that process. “We realised that purchasing a wood waste heater could reduce our wood waste disposal costs whilst also providing free heating for the workshop,” Carl explains. “The cold environment also caused issues with production, for example, if the wood got damp or if it was too cold for the paint to dry – so the wood waste heater has also helped us work more efficiently.” “We’re delighted that the wood waste heater is helping Take 1 Scenic reduce its waste disposal bills and get free heating in the workshop,” adds MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft. “We have many event and exhibition companies interested in wood waste heaters due to the amount of waste wood these industries naturally create.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares that it is proud to claim are up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk

edgebanding machine features the most advanced technological solutions developed by SCM, like the Servo electronic units and other optimisations aimed at achieving levels of finishing quality and squaring of the upper panels superior to current standards. Stefani sbx can be used in stand-alone mode or as part of integrated lines and is synonymous with a high investment return, as it is a squaringedgebanding solution with “the best price/ performance ratio in its market segment”. One of the main advantages is high productivity: stefani sbx has been designed to operate reliably and without interruption over several shifts per day, seven days a week. It can reach machining speeds of up to 40 m/min with an interspacing of 350mm, even with a machining change, and can
thickness of between 8 and 60mm. Another significant advantage is the high squaring precision and parallelism: the extremely solid new single-block structure, the innovative squaring units and the use of 13-cog feed pinions significantly reduces the vibrations, even at high speed. The glue can be changed without having to stop the machine. The exclusive “glue switch” system designed by SCM allows the colour and glue type to be changed easily and instantly. This occurs thanks to an additional glue basin other than the one already found on the machine, complete with motorisation, and the option of different premelting combinations depending on production needs. Thanks to the new Multiedge devices, just in time machining up to three beams can be

achieved and an infinite variety of slim edges, as well as panels with projecting veneering and panels with holes for hardware. The high-quality finishing is also guaranteed by the “electronic touch” units with power-assisted technology that makes the squaring-edgebanding even simpler and more intuitive, even with the most complex machining work and on delicate, trending materials. An automatic, flexible set-up that can offer excellent finishing quality and constant performance on all machining work. SCM’s new squaring-edgebanding machine has been designed to offer an annual energy saving of 10% and a considerable reduction of 50% on the wear of the edge. Its gluing is so precise that it guarantees minimum waste even at high speeds. Added to this are the advantages of a connected, integrated production. Stefani sbx has an exclusive digital control system with a 3D additive preview of the piece being machined and allows you to work in perfect synergy with other technologies and MES computer and management systems at the factory. Stefani sbx is a highly configurable and customisable squaring-edgebanding machine, designed to offer maximum versatility. Indeed, there are 11 possible configurations with a vast range of unit options to meet any production requirement and make it more efficient. www.scmgroup.com

The taxing question of how to get rid of your industrial wood-waste Chris Franklin, MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment – continues his series of exclusive articles for Furniture and Joinery Production. This issue he looks at how governments use carrot and stick tactics on the UK wood working Industry. Landfill Tax, as its name suggests, is a government tax, paid to the government to discourage sending material that could be recycled or used for other purposes, to be buried in holes in the ground. (landfill). Some parts of the country have run out of landfill sites. Domestic and industrial waste “incinerators” are emotive and produce “not in my back yard” feelings and protests. We all know we need them but not near me, thank you. The carrot was definitely the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive or RHI. This scheme paid companies a tariff per kW hour that the company used its wood-waste to produce energy for space heating and process heat. The scheme ran for 10 years (plus a Covid extension) but has now closed. Another carrot is high conventional energy prices and decarbonation of conventional fossil fuels. The stick is Landfill Tax. Most wood machining operations produce wood-waste either in the form of extracted dust from wood working machinery or as off-cuts of either natural timber or man-made boards such as Chipboard MFC and MDF. All types of wood-waste being sent to landfill is taxed at the highest rate. From April 2023 this is £102.10. The following is taken from www.gov.uk: “You pay tax on top of your normal landfill fees if your business gets rid of waste using landfill sites. If you get rid of waste at sites not authorised for landfill, you’ll be charged Landfill Tax. You may also have to pay a penalty, or be taken to court”. Well, that seems quite a clear statement – you pay tax to the government plus what are known as gate fees to the landfill site and also the cost of transport and possibly a hire charge for the skip of container used to transport the waste. It is generally accepted that to dump waste at a landfill site averages at around £100.00 per
“Ranheat make a low cost “bag loader” that can safely feed extracted wood dust into a Ranheat Warm air heater”
tonne. Plus, Landfill tax to the Government of £102.10. Based on this, a skip containing three tonnes of wood-waste will be charged around £600 to go to landfill. Some companies insist that a separate skip is used for dust and in some cases the dust must be sealed in plastic bags. This is because some landfill sites are exposed and loose dust would blow away. For cost reasons, you don’t want the dust to get wet or it’s £102.10 landfill tax to get rid of water! Most wood waste, however, goes to a sorting centre where the usable wood can be separated and shredded for use as Biomass. This causes problems with definitions, as it left the wood working company as a waste, but the sorting centre has turned it into fuel. Industrial wood-waste has a high energy value. Man-made boards generally have a low moisture content and hence high calorific value. A generally accepted “yield” on industrial woodwaste is 3,200kW hours per tonne (this includes a reduction for combustion efficiency). Ranheat bag-loader So, it makes solid sense to install a Ranheat
wood dust into a Ranheat Warm air heater. There is no need to go to the expense of making briquettes to burn your dust. Briquetting machines use a lot of electrical power in forming the briquettes and once formed the dust briquettes try to go back to dust as they are only held together with pressure there is no bonding agent. Dust from the briquetting storage bags cannot be fed into a hand loaded heater and must be processed again through the briquetting machine. The bag-loader is a simple air-tight metal box with internal agitators and a simple screw that feeds material into a 150 or 300 kW Ranheat warm air heater. Whichever Ranheat system you go for or indeed any wood fired installation using waste wood still has to meet all of the current regulations. You still are legally required to obtain planning, chimney height approval and permits to enable you to legally burn woodwaste. This can be in the form of an exemption from the EA for up to 50kgs per hour, or a permit for a SWIP or a full part B permit. Ranheat are on hand to give free assistance with obtaining these permits and permissions.
