Comment Having spent considerable time on the road over the last few months visiting a number of suppliers both in the UK and overseas, the overbearing issue of Brexit hangs in the air, with businesses wishing they knew what the rules of engagement are going to be come March 2019, when the deadline for ending talks on the UK’s withdrawal terms from the EU comes to a head. But even when we John Legg know that, it will be three full years of transition with technical talks Editorial director on the future relationship with the EU before the new relationship between the EU and the UK – whatever that may be – enters into 01424 776104 force. Reportedly, the UK and the EU has agreed on a ‘divorce bill’ john@gearingmediagroup.com of between €45b and €55b, depending on details. Twitter @FurnitureProdEd So with a backdrop of six years of steady economic growth since the last recession, where does all this place the UK furniture and joinery industry? Talking to a number of suppliers in recent months, many of whom are UK-based subsidiaries of European companies, more than anything else it really is a matter of confidence that their customers are, or are not, displaying. After a very healthy trading at the start of the calendar year, a number of firms have told me that the summer was abnormally quiet, year on year, but that September/October onwards things have improved. Although when talking about significant machinery and equipment investment, a number of manufacturers with ready cash or funding in place are choosing to take a watching brief in case the impact of this period of uncertainty damages demand and forces those businesses to rely on its own reserves to get through a period of uncertainty. With the UK’s productivity languishing at sixth out of the G7 economies, over recent years the UK’s furniture and joinery firms have been chasing leaner and more efficient production ideologies as a key business strategy. But now is it a case of Brexit blues perhaps meaning a subsequent period of catch-up for UK manufacturers facing up to EU competitors? On the other hand, the CBI has recently said that UK manufacturing is the strongest it has been for 30 years. The British Woodworking Federation also reports that the medium-term prospects for the joinery industry remain sound, although there are growing concerns over skill labour shortages, the cost of raw materials and of course, the implications of Brexit – which combined foster long-term uncertainty. The only conculsion therefore for the outlook for 2018-19? It can only be described as cautious and irregular. Perhaps by the time we get to W18-Elements next year, we’ll be clearer on that.

Manufacturing orders strongest for nearly 30 years Growth in manufacturing output accelerated in the three months to November, according to the latest monthly CBI Industrial Trends Survey. Order books also continued to fill up. Total orders were, by a small margin, the strongest since August 1988, while export order books were the joint highest in more than 20 years. The improvement in total order books was particularly marked in food and drink and chemicals, while export order books strengthened notably in chemicals, electronics and transport goods.

Output is expected to continue expanding in the three months to February, although at a more moderate pace. Stocks were broadly adequate in the quarter to November, though the level of stocks was below the long-run average. Expectations for price inflation were similar to recent months, around average. Anna Leach, CBI head of economic intelligence, said: “UK manufacturers are once more performing strongly as global growth and the lower level of sterling continue to support demand. Output growth has picked

National finalist award recognises Mirka’s commitment to customer service

Healthy quarterly figures for joinery undermined by long-term question marks over skills and construction growth

In recognition of its commitment to high-quality customer service, Mirka UK has been nominated as a national finalist for the Institute of Customer Service’s Customer Commitment Award. The award recognises customer service excellence demonstrated by businesses within the UK, and the winner will be announced at the 2018 UK Customer Satisfaction Awards ceremony on 6 March 2018 at the London Hilton Park Lane. The judges selected Mirka as one of the 10 finalists, as it differentiated itself from the competition by having a strong commitment to a customer oriented culture within the business and demonstrated its ability to provide consistent customer service excellence. Craig Daycock, managing director of Mirka UK, says, “We’re delighted to be nominated for this award. Our mantra is ‘quality from start to finish’ and this is what we continually aim to deliver to our customers, whether they are a large group or a single operator. We are committed to investing in the customer service process we offer to ensure that it continues to evolve enabling our customers to stay ahead by being flexible, efficient and agile to address the everchanging needs of their customers.”

BWF policy and communications executive Matt Mahony comments on the state of the joinery industry: “Labour shortages and raw materials costs continue to bite but sales growth is still expected, at least in the medium term, with order books holding up well and more than half of firms operating at over four fifths of their capacity. “Investment is set to increase with manufacturing equipment and product improvement the

main targets but large increases in spending are also anticipated for R & D and e-business. “Longer-term growth expectations appear to have been dampened slightly however and this tallies with broader construction industry research suggesting that slower economic growth and signs of an emerging weakness in construction activity outside of private housing are beginning to have an impact on spending decisions.

F M H C

“Labour availability is also becoming a growing concern and this is now anticipated by survey respondents to become the biggest constraint on activity over the next year. New training and apprenticeship reforms, not to mention industry-led skills initiatives, will need to deliver for the woodworking sector and BWF has been redoubling its efforts to support the joinery skills agenda.” bwf.org.uk

Leitz Tooling opens new Durham Service Centre The UK’s largest supplier of tooling to the British woodworking industry has opened a brand new tooling service and sales centre near Durham. Their Chilton location serves businesses from sole traders to volume producers from Newcastleupon-Tyne down to Scarborough, with Sunderland, Hartlepool and Middlesbrough nearby. Bench and site joiners, carpenters, furniture makers and manufacturers from across the region can from now take advantage of the new stand-alone

service and sales centre, with on-site servicing offering quick turnaround and fast collection and delivery. From the new centre near Durham, trade and industry professionals can discover the benefits of having their tools and saw blades serviced and sharpened to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards. They can discuss any problems with any tooling or production issues they might be having, and discover the latest in tool innovations including fast set-up, precise and repeatable timber window production with Leitz’s unique energy rated ThermoTech Lite timber window tooling system. Leitz Tooling UK managing director, Simon Liddell, says: “Opening our new tooling Service Centre near Durham is in direct response to a steady increase in demand for our professional tools and services across the North East region. It gives us a great location to further support local professionals and manufacturers with local on-site servicing as well as tooling consultation, which can help reduce the number

of processes, making for more efficient and profitable businesses for our customers.” Leitz looks forward to welcoming everyone working in the industry across the area to their new home over the coming months to see exactly what they do differently. All tools from Leitz are safety tested to BS EN 847 standards. The company has service and sales centres covering the whole of the UK, and the Harlow head office is a centre of excellence for diamond tool servicing in the UK. leitz-tooling.co.uk/durham.html

Apprenticeships drive as firm moves to Ebbw Vale Welsh furniture manufacturer, Advanced Furniture, has bought a new 100,000ft2 specialist factory on the Rassau Industrial Estate in Ebbw Vale following funding received from NatWest. The business employs nearly 100 staff, and designs and manufactures a range of furniture for the education, local government, and hotel and leisure sectors. The deal, which has seen the family-run company move from its previous base in Rhymney to a larger, fully-equipped factory, has allowed Advanced Furniture to expand its operations as it seeks a bigger slice of the £1.2b UK nondomestic furniture market. The business is now seeking to hire apprentices, and has plans to develop its existing workforce for succession planning purposes. The move has also bolstered the company’s financial performance, and it has recently begun to export its products.

FP290_pages.1.indd 6

In addition to the funding from NatWest, Advanced Furniture has also received asset finance from NatWest partner, Lombard, to purchase a paint line machine that has streamlined its processes and throughput. Established in 1979 to design, manufacture and market a range of polypropylene stacking chairs and other moulded products, Advanced Furniture’s first major products were patio tables and chairs. Since then the company has developed its manufacturing capability to include tube bending and fabrication, moulding, powder coating, woodworking, and design and development, and has also established its own upholstery, assembly and shipping departments. Tim Price, MD of Advanced Furniture, says: “This is a significant and very exciting step for the business. We’re now going to be ramping up production and building

upon our fantastic workforce to ensure that they are highly trained, highly experienced and ready for the company’s next stage of growth. “NatWest’s support and emphasis on service excellence has been absolutely vital during the process.” Adrian Coles, relationship director, NatWest, says: “Advanced

Furniture is a significant employer in the Heads of The Valley area, and it is extremely rewarding to see a business of its size and level of excellence doing so well. Advanced Furniture is without a doubt a major success story and it has been a pleasure working with Tim and the team to ensure the success of the factory relocation and business expansion.”

Take a virtual factory tour with BA Components Kitchen and bedroom manufacturing brands often talk about the quality of their manufacturing in their marketing and BA Components are no exception. However, talking and doing are two different things so they wanted to show its quality manufacturing to the world, regardless of location. But how has it done so? BA Components has gone all out on bringing the production process to the fore by investing in an immersive virtual tour experience that can put anyone deep inside its factory at the click of a button. BA Components virtual tour is literally the next best thing to being on its factory floor. This high definition 360° tour offers viewers a complete interactive experience by clicking on embedded video at each stage of the kitchen and bedroom door manufacturing process. David Caulfield, sales and marketing director,s comments: “We wanted to showcase our business in a very different and unique way by creating a virtual factory tour of our modern Cookstown manufacturing facility. We planned to put our audience at the heart of the action and this technology certainly does that.” Working with John Lynch of Ireland360 enabled BA Components to bring to market an experience unique for the KBB industry. More and more people are now viewing websites and multimedia content on their mobile phones and tablet devices, so together they’ve built a mobile compatible virtual tour solution to meet this need. The impressive BA virtual factory

tour can be viewed on all smart devices, IOS or Android based, tablets, desktops and even personalised BA Components VR headsets. David also says: “Our virtual factory tour is a tool that gives our customers the reassurance that BA Components is innovative and investing in transparency.

This not only gives our customers confidence in purchasing BA products but also the chance of opening the doors to where the magic happens from the convenience of their office or home.” The virtual tour experience begins with a meet and greet with David Caulfield and continues

with the manufacturing process which demonstrates each stage of the production process with video explaining the development along the way. In a world full of pop-ups, video skimming and short attention spans, this is a huge win for BA Components as a valuable medium for fully immersive brand engagement. Whether it’s a potential new dealer or contract customer from anywhere in the world who wants to see the extent of BA’s production facility or machinery in action, this virtual tour puts the power of exploration in their hands as if they were there in Cookstown, Northern Ireland. Printed VR cardboard headsets are available from BA Components to enhance the virtual tour experience, providing you with a unique opportunity to leave a lasting memory of its brand and what lies behind it. bacomponents.co.uk/vr

AXYZ to hold first 2018 open day event in London Leading supplier of routing, cutting, engraving and print finishing systems AXYZ International, will hold its first 2018 open day event in north London on 24th January. Having proved a popular and easily accessible venue for previous similar events, the Royal Air Force Museum, situated on the former Hendon Aerodrome site in Grahame Park Way, Edgware, London NW9 5LL, will again be the chosen venue. The event will run from 10am-4pm and refreshments will be available throughout the day. The open day will provide AXYZ International with the opportunity to formally introduce to existing and potential new customers recently upgraded machines, tooling options and online spare parts, accessories and consumables resources. Application specialists will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions, as well as members of the AXYZ International CNCRoutershop division for consultations on product training and technical support requirements. The main focus of the event will be on the upgraded AXYZ Trident hybrid CNC machine, which now offers a faster, stronger and smarter

solution in comparison with the original models. This will be supplemented by an AXYZ series router and new productivity options. These include a new kiss-cut knife unit, a new highspeed router spindle and an expanded ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility. The Trident machine incorporates a triple-head

The latest AXYZ Trident will be demonstrated at the open day event

configuration featuring a CNC routing spindle with oscillating and tangential knife-cutting units. These are interchangeable to enable the processing of frequently problematical thin materials like vinyl, cardboard and paper and

thicker and heavier materials such as aluminium and other non-ferrous metals, ACM (Aluminium Composite Material), acrylic and foamed boards. The new 8.7hp, 40,000rpm HDS spindle is said to represent the next step in high-speed machine processing, enabling routing/cutting at two to three times faster than when using a standard spindle and with no compromise on the quality of the edge finish on the materials processed. This makes the HDS spindle ideal for the machining of woods, plastics and non-ferrous metals. The new kiss-cut knife option expands the functionality of AXYZ CNC routers by enabling the processing of a much wider range of materials. Special adapters will allow the knife to be fitted into most of the commonly used routing/cutting spindles and tangential knife tools. The new ATC facility will feature a choice of 10 or 14 toolstations and will complement the existing sevenand 21-station options. These have now been upgraded with improved mechanics and drive motors. To reserve a place at the AXYZ open day and for more information, contact Janine Roberts. 0115 975 8100 enquiries@axyz.co.uk

ZOW gains momentum

NBF goes full circle

More than 110 exhibitors have already confirmed their participation at ZOW, the supplier fair for the furniture and interior design industry in Bad Salzuflen, Germany from 6-8th February, 2018. All the signs are that hall 20 of the trade fair grounds will be fully booked by February. Currently, 70% of the stand area has already been reserved and the feedback from meetings with potential exhibitors is positive, promising much interest in participating. Most recently, D-Beschlag, Domus Line, Elektra, Gildo Profilati, Hueck Rheinische, Konrad Hornschuch, Krono System, Melaplast as well as Nomet have confirmed participation. Under the umbrella ‘Great ideas in a compact setting’, ZOW will act as an industry meeting place focused on discussions and exchanges of ideas in the years in which interzum does not take place. The ZOW concept and show is based on project work and intensive discussions over the three days of the trade fair. The event remains free for visitors. zow.de

The National Bed Federation (NBF) has formalised its commitment to reducing and ultimately eliminating the use of landfill for the disposal of End of Life (EOL) beds with a new committee dedicated to the circular economy. The trade body will focus on the disposal and recycling of mattresses, divans, bases, beds and headboards through the new Circular Economy Committee. Says Tony Lisanti, group chief executive of Airsprung and chairman of the committee: “We recognise that the industry has a moral and ethical duty to help find and promote solutions which will reduce and ultimately eliminate landfill disposal. Through education and best practice advice, the industry will be encouraged to move towards greater resource efficiency and embrace the principles of the circular economy.” Members gave the NBF the go-ahead to set ambitious recycling targets and work towards a viable national recycling scheme at its 2018 Spring Forum. The move follows two specially commissioned NBF reports, over the past three years, on mattress End of Life. These found that, despite a growing trend in mattress takeback and recycling, in 2015 less than 15% were diverted from landfill and more than 80% of this recycling is still overseen by local authorities. With increasing engagement by industry and sectors such as hospitality to find disposal alternatives to landfill, the NBF has worked with the Textile Recycling Association to set up an independently audited register of approved mattress recyclers. The register is due to be launched early next year. The committee is also tasked with investigating re-use schemes to help close the circle and to examine and review standards such as BS1425 cleanliness of fillings standard* to ensure they are fit for purpose for a 21st century circular economy. “It’s early days yet,” says Tony Lisanti. “But we have a highly experienced and engaged group of volunteers on this committee and I’m sure we shall see some exciting progress in the coming months.”

Major investment in Holz-Her production facility Positive growth in the Weinig Group: supervisory board, management board and Holz-Her executives at the groundbreaking ceremony for the forwardlooking, multi-million Euro project

The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on the Holz-Her production facility in Voitsberg, Austria, signalled the start of an ambitious forward-looking project. The 22,000m2 site of the specialist in machines and systems for panel processing is being developed with a 1000m2 extension specifically designed for the planned new CNC

milling machine for framework processing. The new hall will exclusively accommodate new and pioneering machine technology for the machining of large steel structural components. Holz-Her’s intention is to make its production even more efficient and flexible. Holz-Her has been part of the Weinig Group since 2010 and its

turnover has risen by 20% over the last two years alone. Just recently, Holz-Her attracted massive attention at Ligna with its Nextec technology for furniture production. As a result of the strong growth, production capacity in Voitsberg has already doubled over the last two years. The investment of €4.5m is part of a group-wide investment package

of more than €15m and will secure the future, long-term growth of the company. To reflect the significance of the project for the future of the company, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by both Weinig’s supervisory board, led by chairman Thomas Bach, and Weinig’s management board, represented by CEO Wolfgang Pöschl, chief sales and marketing officer Gregor Baumbusch and CFO Gerald Schmidt. “Holz-Her, like the entire Weinig Group, is on a strong trajectory,” says Wolfgang Pöschl. “Group orders to the end of April showed 17% growth while revenues rose by as much as 21%. The Weinig Group is very confident of achieving the order inflow of €471m targeted for 2017. Owing to this growth, the group’s global personnel will increase to more than 2100 in 2017.

NEWS

In early November, SCM Group UK held an in-house event which was designed to change how companies think about manufacturing and develop towards Industry 4.0 standards.

SCM UK’s successful open house SCM UK’s three-day event at its Nottingham head office put forward a wide range of equipment showcasing the impressive breadth of options available from SCM. Despite an early morning power supply hiccup, ultimately everything ran smoothly and a steady flow of visitors was both engaged and inspired by SCM’s positive

FP290_pages.1.indd 16

solutions for window and door manufacturing, furniture and panel manufacturing, edgebanding and drilling. In addition, as is the norm with these events, SCM’s partners were well represented with software, tooling, edgebanding, finance and more all on hand throughout. The impressive SCM Accord range of five-axis CNC machines

was one of the key attractions of the event, with demonstrations running on demand producing sash windows and arches on the MATIC automatic table using SCM Maestro or Kosmosoft Archimede software – both of which offer simple and intuitive programming, giving users tremendous versatility. SCM’s new innovation-packed Morbidelli CNC Author M100

showed its ability with door production with tandem loading, quick squaring, lock recess and hinge execution in three-axis mode. To demonstrate the Author’s capability, it was shown producing stair strings up to 6m long. Impressive options are very much par for the course with SCM’s technical capability. The firm’s tried-and-tested window centre and moulder combination, the Dogma window centre and Superset NT automatic moulder, has a healthy productivity close to 30 windows per shift, and confirms how new touchscreen interfaces and traditional machining processes offer great quality, optimal precision and high productivity in a simple and very reliable manner. In one focused area of the showroom, it was interesting to see a full suite of classical machines and sanders for all needs and investment levels. These included a Profiset 40 four-sided moulder, a Ti120 Class spindle moulder, aS520 surface planer, Sandya 1, 300 and 600 sanders and a Si350 table saw. SCM’s experience and innovation in furniture and panel manufacturing has long been recognised, and its SCM and Morbidelli have been busy nesting for businesses large and small for many years. SCM nesting is now getting even faster with tooling solutions allowing

cutting speeds of up to 50m/min. The Universal 3122 cell with loading and unloading offers flexibility and productivity, and is backed by its Maestro Nest software, with optimisation paths to increase productivity up to 30%. For those that lack space in their factory, the SCM Pratix S22 leads the way in compact, high-speed nesting, with small ticket price and high productivity, starting from footprints of less than 20m2. In terms of edgebanding options, Stefani is one of the UK’s favourite soft-forming edgebanders. Its award-winning J-Shape solution demonstrates its innovative stance with edgebanding. Starting with options for the smaller workshop – the Minimax Me20, 35 and 40

are entry-level products from an impressive range of edgebanders. At the show In Nottingham, the very capable K560, complete with AirFusion technology, was almost constantly being put through its paces. Its seamless joint line garnered universal admiration. The more industrial-level Solution XD, with its multi-edge automatic changeover system also impressed. With this machine, materials such as acrylic or

aluminium edges with a protective film, high gloss materials, sanded or un-sanded wood and laser edges can be applied with control from the on-board touchscreen computer. On the drilling front, the Morbidelli Cyflex SR was on show, a compact machine with vertical feeding of the panels to process all boring and routing patterns on nested or beam saw sized panels. It was quickly evident that its effective set-up, drilling speed and precision would bring immediate benefit where heavy drilling is required. 0115 977 0044 scmgroup-uk.com

Steven and his small team of craftsmen have completed projects for customers in Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, London and elsewhere. Steven trained at the workshops of renowned furniture designer, Gordon Russell, and has been a skilled cabinetmaker for over 30 years. He established his own company, designing and making kitchens and furniture, in 2001. Hoffmann introduce new generation MU-3 to the UK After many years in service, Hoffmann’s ever-popular MU-2 is being superseded by the new generation MU-3 series. The reason behind this enhanced design has been the desire, from customers, for ever increasing and diverse applications for the Hoffmann jointing system. Hoffmann now offers many new functions and refinements on the MU-3. When redesigning this machine Hoffmann was careful to include the ability to attach all existing accessories on the new MU-3. These accessories – many of which are unique to the UK market – have evolved over the last 20 years. Ergonomic and with a userfriendly design, the Hoffmann MU-3 is available in four versions: Basic; Digital, with electronic display of the routing depth and router position; Pneumatic, for increased production rates; and a PD Pneumatic/Digital version for maximum ease of use. The MU-3’s highlights are: an increased routing depth to 95mm and work piece height of 140/170mm; a digital display of the router position – adjustment of the centre fence – and the routing

depth as well as flip-stop positions; Vernier adjustment of the motor position – fine adjustment of the joint/key tension; table extensions to suit customers’ individual requirements; fence-stop supports

for tall or narrow work pieces; and adjustable support fences for cornices and centre-line location jig. A number of versions of the impressive new generation Hoffmann MU-3 were displayed

and demonstrated at the North of England Woodworking Show in November. 01524 841500 jg@hoffmann-uk.com hoffmann-uk.com

Mighton Machinery improves efficiency for Conservation Windows Since launching its own brand range of machinery earlier this year, all designed to make targeted aspects of joinery production quicker, easier and more efficient, Mighton Products has welcomed a growing number of positive reviews, with the latest coming from Glasgow-based sash window specialist Conservation Windows. An expert in the restoration and installation of sash windows in period properties, the family-run firm recently purchased the Mighton Scribe-It machine, one of the most popular products in the range, and was quick to praise its precision and speed. “We have regularly been buying sash window components, such as sash cords, seals and ironmongery, from Mighton for the last decade,” said director Archie MacLean, “so we had no hesitation in looking to them for our machinery needs. We took full advantage of the Mighton mobile demonstration vehicle service and booked a visit with Dale Cook, giving us a chance to ‘try before you buy’ and ask him any questions we had before going ahead with the purchase.” He continues: “We have had the machine

FP290_pages.1.indd 24

in our workshop for around a month now and there has been a notable impact on our output in terms of both speed and quality of finish. The

machine itself is compact, straightforward to set up and very easy to use. It’s a good value product and there is nothing about it I would change.” Mighton chairman, Mike Derham, says: “The goal when we first started developing our machines was to help us partner with numerous highly skilled joinery firms, such as Conservation Windows, and help them make targeted changes to their manufacturing process that help reduce labour and increase speed. “The manufacture of authentic timber windows and doors is an artform where it is necessary for much of the process to be done by hand, but by introducing machines to complete the bottleneck stages of this process, the overall operation can be far more efficient and cost effective.” Conservation Windows is a small family-based company, established in Glasgow in 1998. The team has a combined two decades of experience in the manufacture, restoration and installation of traditional timber sash windows and pride itself on delivering a personal and high quality service to its customers. mightonproducts.com 01223 497097

Blackheath Products has evolved considerably since it was established 50 years ago. From humble beginnings, which saw the company’s founder, Ian Foster, selling kitchen sinks out of a small holding in the Midlands, to establishing a successful supplies company with an impressive £25m annual turnover – it is a British success story.

In The Black with Striebig Now with a 100,000ft2 warehouse in Halesowen, Blackheath distributes kitchen and bathroom products, decorative laminate and composite boards nationwide. Keen to diversify its offer still further, the company has recently purchased its second Striebig Compact vertical panel saw from leading woodworking machinery distributor, TM Machinery. “As a company, we can never rest on our laurels and as such, we can’t afford to be let down by unreliable machinery,” begins Adrian Wild, Logistics Manager at Blackheath Products. “Some of our machines have been on our floor for decades,

but the moment they cannot be relied upon to offer a high quality finish and accurate cut is the time we invest in new machinery.” “TM Machinery are experts in their field. What they don’t know about vertical panel saws isn’t worth knowing,” explains Adrian. “When it came to replacing one of our older saws, we knew what we wanted the new machine to achieve but we didn’t know what kind of model we needed to make this happen. TM converted our ideas into something tangible and worked with us to create a solution that fit the business. They gave us options and translated everything into plain English, allowing us to fully understand the process. It

was this interaction that cemented the purchase of our first Striebig Compact in 2013.” Four years on, the kitchen products and surface supplier has installed its second Compact saw through TM Machinery. “The decision to install a second Compact vertical panel saw was an easy one,” admits Adrian. “In recent years, the company has changed. We no longer only supply kitchen products and worktops to the trade. We’re now working with large kitchen manufacturers, architects, specifiers and commercial contractors to supply decorative sheets and compact board on a big scale. Most recently we’ve worked with KFC, McDonalds, the Queen

Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and the Ministry of Defence. It’s an area that we’re keen to grow in the coming years.” Working in new markets has encouraged further investment in Blackheath Products’ machinery. Working on large projects has promoted the need for a saw that not only offers unparalleled accuracy, reliability and longevity but also the ability to work with large panels up to 4.3m long and cut a wide range of surface materials within a 1/10mm accuracy. “Purchasing a second Compact seemed like the only choice. We knew the machine would be more than capable of completing the work quickly and

efficiently and we have great confidence in the Striebig brand.” Along with the installation, TM Machinery also trained the team on the saw – a service that Adrian admits was a big selling point when working with the Striebig distributor. “We are extremely Health and Safety conscious. In this day and age, you can’t afford not to be. That’s why we chose TM Machinery to train the entire warehouse team on the Striebig. In large companies such as this, we appreciate a lot of our

FP290_pages.1.indd 31

competitors would only train a handful of workers on the machine because of the time and cost associated with it. However, we wanted to be able to utilise the machine to the best of our ability and have a skilled workforce. It took two engineers four days to complete but now over 20 warehouse operatives are certified to use the saws.” The results spoke for themselves, with Blackheath Products seeing a return on investment almost immediately. “Not only are the Striebigs working on multiple projects at one time, we are now advertising a cutting service. Offering special cuts has created a new revenue source for us, and we couldn’t have done it without our Striebig saws. Our cut-to-size service is attracting new customers and we’ve seen regular customers returning more frequently to take advantage of this. At peak times, we can perform over 100 cuts a day on each machine and we know each cut will help us win business today, tomorrow and in years to come.” Thanks to this new revenue source created by the two Striebig saws, increased productivity and entry into new markets, Blackheath Products is looking to increase its 100,000ft2 premises by a further 8500ft2 Adrian adds, “The Striebig’s ability to cut a wide range of materials both vertically and horizontally has influenced the company going forward. With high quality machinery, a long standing partnership with TM Machinery and a dedicated workforce behind us, we are now looking to be not only a nationwide stockist and distributor but also a manufacturer. Our Striebig saws will play a vital role in this as the company continues to push ahead.” 0116 271 7155 tmmachinery.co.uk Twitter: @TM_Machinery

Cotswold Doors, based in Gloucestershire has a wealth of experience in the supply of high quality doors, door sets, door kits and internal glazed screens.

Cotswold Doors invests in the latest crosscutting/ trenching technology from Stromab Due to a considerable growth in its customer base and increased demand for high quality pre hung door sets for the residential apartments and student accommodation sectors, Cotswold Doors has added an additional manufacturing facility for door set machining and assembly along with new ironmongery packaging facilities. One of the main decisions company director Jamie Wilkinson and newly-appointed production manager Mark Nash had to make was to identify the key machines they would need to install to start production, which included an automatic crosscut saw. Through contacts in the trade Jamie was aware that JJ Smith are regarded as the UK’s leading supplier of cross cutting solutions, and after an initial telephone conversation with sales manager Kevin McGlone, he made an appointment to visit Smith’s Liverpool showroom. Here he was able to see demonstrations on four different models of automatic cross cut saws, thus enabling him to review the features and benefits of each machine. Cut to length/trenched door headers, plus cut to length/mitred architraving

Stromab CT600/F programmable cross cut saw for straight/angled cutting with in-built trenching

As Cotswold Doors wanted to invest in a machine that would give them a high level of versatility, they were particularly interested in the Stromab CT600/F machine, which not only can be used for cutting straight parts, it can also automatically cut angles up to +/-70°. In addition it is equipped with an in-built

automatic trenching head meaning the CT600/F can be programmed to cut to length/trench in one operation for the door frame headers. Other standard features include a 6m infeed capacity, precision rack and pinion movement of the pusher arm and the latest generation of Beckhof industrial level touch screen controller, with the software offering full optimisation and integration with external software to allow import of cutting lists in a number of different formats. After spending several hours seeing the machine in operation and carefully going through the specification/pricing, Jamie and Mark decided to place an order there and then. The CT600F was delivered and installed ‘bang on time’ and was fully operational within a couple of days. Mark comments: “Steve the JJ Smith technician did a fantastic job, he was very professional and took the time to make sure we were happy with all aspects of the operation and programming.” The machine has now been installed for over three months and Jamie Wilkinson adds: “Everything went very smoothly from point of order to installation and we are extremely happy with the machine’s performance. Also I would not hesitate to recommend JJ Smith who have looked after us very well and are a pleasure to deal with.” JJ Smith continues to have a permanent demonstration of cross cut saws set up in their Liverpool showroom. It includes manual Graule radial arm saws, Stromab Matrix and CT600 programmable ranges (four different models) and also a Cursal TRSI with automatic crosschain feeding and outfeed automatic sorting system. To arrange a demonstration, contact JJ Smith. 0151 548 9000 sales@jjsmith.co.uk jjsmith.co.uk

As a family business, R & S Tonks has remained faithful to their critical value of ensuring product quality. Following many trusted years’ service from its Wadkin CP32 sliding table panel saw, it was time to upgrade.

Daltons Wadkin installs Altendorf at R & S Tonks

After considerable research and deliberation, Andy Eardley, R & S Tonks’ workshop manager, soon realised that there was only one name capable of meeting the precision and bespoke machine requirements – an Altendorf from Daltons Wadkin. From humble beginnings over 65 years ago operating from a rented stable behind a hotel, to its purpose-built factory and office unit, R & S Tonks has undoubtedly developed into an industry leader offering an unrivalled building refurbishment and maintenance service to blue chip and independent businesses throughout the hospitality sector. Many elements from within have aided the company to grow, such as the very best manufacturing equipment and an exceptional team of experienced joiners and tradesmen – many of which have more than 20 years’ service within the business. Nottingham-based Daltons Wadkin has previously supplied R & S Tonks with machinery, servicing and training. Daltons Wadkin,

FP290_pages.1.indd 34

also a family business, and R & S Tonks share similar core values, an important factor for Robert Tonks, the current managing director of R & S Tonks. Andy Eardley’s comments on its requirements and reasons for choosing an Altendorf: “Our customers are demanding even shorter turnaround times and we must be able to offer 100% product quality and repeatability. Whilst needing to improve the core functions of our sliding table panel saw, we need a machine with the flexibility that will enable us to open up new markets. We need perfection and we need it right first time. Having searched the market, an Altendorf panel saw is the only answer.” After discussing the almost limitless combination of options available for an Altendorf saw, it became apparent that the versatile F45 ProDrive tailored exactly to R & S Tonks’ production requirements. To cater for large panel material, the Altendorf F45 was equipped with a 3200mm sliding table and a 300mm-wide infeed support roller, which Is particularly useful when

cutting longer pieces against the extended 1600mm rip fence. The convenient on/off switches on the sliding table improve safety and operating ergonomics, allowing large work pieces to be loaded before switching the machine on. In addition to panel work, crosscutting timber material needed to be catered for. Increased cutting depth to 204mm was included, paired with a VARIO drive motor allowing a vast array of material and sizes to be cut with ease. “The quick, fine digital adjustments we can now make on the crosscut-mitre fence reduces at least 50% operator time opposed to our previous cutting method,” comments Andy. “The rip fence is CNC controlled, we store programs in the ProDrive’s memory function. This again saves a significant amount of set-up time, whilst eliminating any chance of operator error thanks to the machine’s accuracy.” Daltons Wadkin’ factorytrained engineers delivered and commissioned the machine, providing familiarisation training to maximise the efficiency of the

Altendorf. “This is only one example of many growing businesses making the transition to CNC-assisted technology,” comments Daltons Wadkin director, Alex Dalton. “Automated processes and more intelligent machines are a necessity to improve accuracy, efficiency and labour saving. “Repetitive work which would normally be done by hand, and guess-work such as length compensation can be minimised to make workflow processes smoother.” The Altendorf F45 ProDrive has now been with R & S Tonks for 12 months, and has served each and every purpose to the full. Andy Eardley’s words of advice for anyone in the market for a new sliding table saw are clear: “Speak to the right suppliers, and existing machine owners who have first-hand experience using the saws. The time we have taken researching, and making the informed decision has paid the business back in dividends.” 0115 986 5201 daltonswadkin.com

High quality bedroom manufacturer Sliderobes West Yorkshire has just upgraded its whole production facility with help from Lancashire-based VWM.

Sliderobes invests in new panel process centre for the manufacture of high quality bedrooms Sliderobes visited the VWM showrooms and looked at the selection of machinery on display – it was clear that a small footprint CNC boring machine, new panel saw and edgebander were needed to increase production, quality and accuracy on its products.

A typical Sliderobes installation

A quality Sliderobes bedroom All the machines were fully demonstrated at VWM’s fully operational showroom and it was decided the first machine needed was the new Robland BM3000 CNC boring machine. The machine has a fully installed Windowsbased software that enables the customer to draw panels for face drilling, end drilling, grooving, routing, cam and dowel and Blum hinge holes. Once this operation has been performed, simply load the panel on to the machine and press go – a typical wardrobe panel with multiple holes for shelves and some cam and dowel drilling would be processed in less than two minutes, which is a massive saving on labour and accuracy. Robland BM-3000 CNC The Robland machine was installed and commissioned by factory-trained VWM engineers who recently completed training at the Robland factory in Belgium, thus giving VWM customers a better understanding of the machine and its capabilities. The next two machines that Sliderobes West Yorkshire decided upon was a Griggio Digit 3 panel saw with touch screen, full three axis controls of the blade, tilt and fence position, fully automatic position of the scoring saw unit and digital flip-over stops to the crosscut table. The final piece of the Sliderobes manufacturing jigsaw was the new Lange B85KFE edgebander – this machine was fully loaded with a multitude of options which include pre-milling, corner rounding and buffing and glue scraping station. Cheshire firm finds real benefits using Qwood Established 160 years ago, Tomlinson Parbans is a timber and joinery company in Cheshire. A supplier to both the trade and public; the company’s specialities include traditional sliding sash and casement windows. Before Qwood, Tomlinson Parbans found that the timber beads it was using in its windows would occasionally become distorted, due to twisting, swelling and bowing of the timber. On a fitted window this can cause an issue, leading to a return to site to repair the timber bead that when fitted was perfectly straight. The first trial of Qwood proved straightforward and successful as all the same tools and working methods as natural timber could be used.

Qwood solves manufacturing problems

Tomlinson Parbans began using Qwood in 2009, initially just employing a few parting- and staff-beads for its painted sash windows. Over the years the company has utilised more Qwood beads in its windows and now uses Qwood beads in all painted windows. The Cheshire firm soon found that investment in the use of Qwood gave it real benefits over traditional timber. Qwood does not rot, remains straight and once fitted and painted, looks just like timber. Owing to the durability of Qwood, using Qwood beads mean Tomlinson Parbans can save time and offer enhanced quality windows to its customers with absolute confidence. 0161 627 4222 quantumprofilesystems.com

Gowercroft designs, manufactures and installs high quality bespoke joinery products for internal and external applications. The company is proud of having built an enviable reputation for the manufacture of quality joinery products for private housing domestic customers, and for commercial and oneoff projects. Before beginning to use Qwood in August 2015, the manufacturing process was to leave a 1mm gap for beads in case of expansion. This unpredictability meant a consistent level of quality was hard to achieve, and took many more hours in the fitting up area to get it right. Gowercroft has also begun to use laminated timber and the saving of waste meant there were fewer offcuts left from which to make beads. Working closely with QPSL, the original and only manufacturer of Qwood, bespoke

Qwood beads were created for Gowercroft. These beads have further reduced issues with the expansion and warping of beading on fitted windows, and lead to a reduction in remedial work. It also closes the 1mm gaps and ensures the Gowercroft product looks as traditional as possible. Qwood can be worked with standard tools and machinery so the products have slotted into Gowercroft’s processes with ease. Qwood beads have a similar materials cost to the beads previously used, but offer a considerable labour saving. Qwood beads have removed part of the painting process which saves time and money. Due to Qwood’s Lean manufacturing processes and quick delivery, Gowercroft has peace of mind that they can have what they need, delivered when they need it and they do not need to hold costly inventory.” 0161 627 4222 quantumprofilesystems.com

The UK market for wood panel products is dominated by the construction industry, which uses all varieties of panel products for structural, aesthetic and fitting-out purposes.

Furniture remains the most important market for European MDF producers However, the second most important market for panel producers is furniture. The growth of flat-pack DIY products during the latter part of the 20th century created a demand for both particleboard and MDF that continues to grow strongly. Its consistent and reliable physical characteristics and the ease with which it can be machined also lend MDF to manufacturing and it is used widely in the manufacturing sector for carcassing and framing. Norbord produced the world’s first MDF (in 1966 at its factory in New York State) and in 1979 its Cowie factory became the first to produce MDF in the UK. Today the company manufactures a full range of MDF products for a variety of applications, including light and standard grades and moisture-resistant versions. Its top-quality grades, Deep Rout and Deep Rout Excel are designed specifically for the production of high-grade furniture and fittings. Its consistent close-grained texture ensures clean edges and surfaces that will take a smooth finish. While the furniture industry is an important consumer of all types of wood product (including expensive high quality hardwoods) the bulk of its production relies on sheet materials and in particular, products like Norbord’s Caberwood MDF. According to the Wood Panel Products Federation, the UK furniture industry consumes around 28% of all domestically-produced

As a proportion of the UK total, WPIF estimates that MDF accounts for 29% of annual UK consumption of domestically produced panel products

FP290_pages.1.indd 40

wood panel products, a similar proportion to the total amount of all roundwood products consumed in the UK (the Timber Trades Federation estimates that furniture production accounts for 30% of all imported and domestically produced wood). The industry is especially important for MDF producers, half of whose total production is consumed by furniture manufacturers. Only 40% of UK MDF goes to the construction industry in stark contrast to particleboard and OSB where construction accounts for 55% and 80% of annual production respectively (source: WPIF). As a proportion of the UK total,

WPIF estimates that MDF accounts for 29% of annual UK consumption of domestically produced panel products (compared to particleboard, 64%, and OSB, 7%). In 2016, UK MDF production reached 950,00m3 compared with 320,000m3 of OSB and 2,310,000m3 of particleboard. Demand for the product currently exceeds supply and imports remain steady at around 25%. Last year, total UK consumption of MDF reached 1,245,980m3. Demand for MDF is currently growing throughout the UK and Europe. The European Panel Federation reports that MDF production throughout the region grew by 2.7% in 2015 from 11.5m

m3 to 11.8m m3. At the same time, the value of wood furniture production increased 4.4% to €31.2b across the Euro 28 while, in the UK, the market grew by 1.1%. Norbord is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of engineered wood-based panel products. All products are FSCcertified and used extensively in the construction, DIY and furniture sectors. Norbord’s brands, SterlingOSB, CaberBoard, CaberWood MDF and ContiBoard are well known and are commonly specified by architects, national housebuilders and specifiers. 01786 812921 norbord.co.uk

The UK’s biggest independent timber and panel products distributor, James Latham, is now offering Red Grandis directly from stock through all eight of its nationwide timber depots.

Red Grandis lands at Lathams Ethically sourced and plantation grown in Uruguay by forestry and logging giant Urufor, Red Grandis is 100% FSC certified and fully complaint with EUTR legislation. Offering exceptional durability and stability, this high-performing, versatile hardwood timber – which comes from the eucalyptus family – is also easy to machine and stain, plus, because it is plantation grown, it offers continuity of supply. James Latham’s technical timber sales development manager, Justin Hayward explains: “We are really excited to be able to offer this product and I am confident that it will quickly become a popular choice with our customers. Red Grandis is ethically sourced; environmentally friendly and readily available and this, coupled with outstanding levels of performance in stability and durability, ensures that it ticks all of the boxes not only

FP290_pages.1.indd 44

for us, but for our customers.” Typical uses for Red Grandis include all types of joinery such as windows, doors, conservatories, mouldings and cladding. It is particularly well suited to large projects such as door frames as it is supplied in long engineered lengths so it is less likely to bow and warp, this in turn reduces the need to overlap and finger-joint frames. Justin adds: “James Latham has a long history and expertise in bringing new and innovative products to market and Red Grandis fits perfectly within our extensive timber portfolio which boasts one of the largest and most

varied ranges of joinery-quality hardwoods and softwoods available in the UK.” Red Grandis is available in the following thicknesses as sawn timber; 25, 32, 38 and 50mm and in widths of 150mm and wider as well as long lengths – mainly 3.7m to 4.9m. It is also offered as WoodEx, Latham’s own premium quality, engineered hardwood and softwood timber product in all core sizes for joinery applications as clear faced and finger jointed for long lengths. 0116 257 3415 lathamtimber.co.uk

This spring, Homag premiered an extension to its finishing technology product range. Announced at Ligna 2017, the all-new GSF 100 series offers a compact spraying solution for furniture parts, doors, stairs, and interior fitting elements. Ideally suited to small- and medium-sized companies, the GSF is the perfect machine to step up into the world of automated painting and lacquering.

Homag closes the gap in its portfolio of surface technology

The new Homag GSF 100 SH compact spraying machine

Equipped with a reciprocating arm and four spray guns, these machines feature a fully automated vacuum conveyor belt to transport work pieces for completely flexible, throughput efficiency. The GSF 100 can be used as both a stand-alone spray machine or as part of an extensive finishing line. The integration of an automated paint application system ensures that a continuously high quality finish is achieved with every job. This reduces the amount of overspray waste, consequently enhancing cost savings for the user. The cost efficiencies are also boosted via the GSF’s intelligent work piece detection system. A high resolution light grid accurately identifies the contours of each part, precisely controlling the paint flow of the individual spray guns. In the standard specification, the large machine filters are easily accessible and replaceable for simplicity of cleaning and general maintenance. This feature reduces the effort required from the operators in terms of the upkeep of the machine. In addition, the introduction of automatic spraying within production significantly increases the working conditions for employees. This is a result of the reduction in paint exposure as well as a reduced workload pressure produced when

FP290_pages.1.indd 48

using manual paint application. The GSF 100 can provide consistently high quality painting or lacquering for up to 2400 parts per shift. Homag GSF 100 S – automated spraying with an added throughfeed alternative The GSF 100 S has been specifically developed to offer the market an efficient alternative to manual spraying. Enhancing the automated spraying application process, this model has been purposely built to deliver low operating costs at an affordable investment level. Equipped with a complete throughfeed transport belt, work pieces are effortlessly fed into the spray booth on individual trays. Once the spraying process is complete, the parts continue to be conveyed out of the machine to the end of the belt. Especially designed to transport even the smallest of parts, this model widens the opportunity of production possibilities. Homag GSF 100 SH – enhancing spraying technology with automated efficiencies With the GSF 100 SH, Homag offers an automated work piece handling concept for the loading and unloading of parts. Based on the standard GSF 100 range of

The Homag GSF 100 range offers automated painting and lacquering solutions for all work pieces

features, the SH model is capable of one-man operation. Using an innovatively designed infeed system, components are gently guided into the spray booth. Once the spraying process is complete the parts are then reloaded back on the work piece loading trolley. This concept provides an easy, flexible and reliable finishing solution that requires low personnel and, due to its compact design, low production space. The GSF 100 SH can be adapted and individually specified to meet the production demands of the manufacturer. Specific functions can be incorporated to the standard model to offer increased flexibility. Combining a two-way loading function provides uninterrupted operating cycles. Subsequently, this doubles the amount of work pieces within the machine, since one loading rack can be changed whilst

the other batch is in operation. Furthermore, the largest of production volumes can be achieved on the GSF 100 SH by doubling both the automated concepts of loading and unloading. The use of a two-way loading function at both sides of the machine delivers an almost selfsufficient concept, significantly increasing efficiency in production. The new GSF range of machinery from Homag opens up the possibilities for cost effective automatic spraying technology at all levels of industry. With flexible payment plans available from Homag Finance, these machines have never been so affordable. Whatever the sanding needs, Kündig has a sander to meet them From its range of widebelt sanders and edge sanders, including itsbespoke division, Kundig Technic.

Kündig: a sander for every season Whatever the sanding needs, Kündig has a sander to meet them from its range of widebelt sanders and edge sanders, including itsbespoke division, Kundig Technic. Technic machines created so far include top/bottom sanding systems with two to six units; extra large machines for the panel industry, with special machines for plywood and sanders with cutterheads; and machines for working with very thin material in the laminate industry. If you have a requirement that you feel cannot be met by a standard machine, have a word with Kündig: the solution may be closer than you think. Here are just some of the companies which have purchased Kündig sanders in recent years and been featured in previous issues … Michael Northcroft Michael Northcroft is a British furniture designer and maker with an international reputation for excellence. Founded by managing director, Michael Northcroft, in 1982, the company purchased a Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 REd sander in 2016 from Kündig Ltd’s authorised agent, A12 Machinery of Essex. Michael says: “The Kündig is an expensive beast, but you do get a high quality job out of it. We make very high quality furniture. Our client base includes many international stars, performers, sports people around the world so we need high quality sanding. The furniture is tailored to their homes and the quality has to be really good. “We use a lot of exotic veneers

and woods in our furniture. The Kündig minimises ripples and defects in high class lacquers. “We also sand our solid wood components on it. A multitude of solid wood components go into our furniture. The Kündig is highly accurate: you get the dimension out that you set the machine to. There is no burning, you get a very clear finish and it is wonderfully trouble free. “It is a really good machine, I am really pleased with it.“ TAGG Furniture Roland Tagg and Bob Underwood of TAGG Furniture, established in 1979, purchased a Premium-2 1350 RE for sanding both solid wood and veneered boards, as well as a Uniq-S edge sander for the sanding of edges to MDF panels. TAGG Furniture already had a

for Roland to buy the edge sander at the same time. Kündig was approached because “After a lot of research and talking to friends and fellow furniture makers Kündig sanders came out on top and they were very highly rated.

Michael Northcroft purchased a Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 REd sander

widebelt sander which had served the company faithfully for many years, but it was reaching the end of its useful life. And once the decision had been made to replace the widebelt sander, it was natural

That is a good advertisement!” Roland tells F&JP. He continues: “It is a very compact machine and we are very tight for space, so not having a lot of extra bits stuck on the side was very useful.” The old machine had a 1100mm capacity; this one has a 1350mm capacity with a smaller footprint. “The quality of the finish is really, really good. Before we didn’t put veneered panels through the old machine in case it sanded through the veneer. “It gets used a lot as we are manufacturing different items all the time. We have lots of different people using the machine on various projects and because of the simplicity of use any of our workforce can go up to it and use it after just 10 minutes of training

without worrying about messing it up, and will get a good result.” deVOL Kitchens deVOL purchased a Kündig Premium- 3 1100 RRP sander, delivered and commissioned in September 2015. Managing director, Robin McLellan, told F&PJ: “In the search for a new sander, we worked through Markfield Woodworking Machinery (MWM), with whom we have a long-standing relationship. We have bought a lot of machinery from them in the past, and they introduced us to Kündig Ltd and to Carl O’Meara.” Carl went with Robin and Gavin Cooper of MWM to Wreak Valley Craftsman to see a Premium-2 1100 RE with vacuum belt in action, carrying out various demonstrations using different grit configurations on a selection of kitchen doors and components Robin had brought for testing purposes. Robin says: “We tried a variety of machines, and the Kündig sander was the one we had the best experience with finishing-wise. We were aware of their reputation, and wanted to get the best machine on the market. “The advantages of the Kündig were all very subtle things, and that is often the case with fine finishing. These subtleties become quite critical in creating a finish that is spot on compared to one that is 99% . We just wanted to make sure we got the belt and braces right.” When asked if he would recommend the Kündig sander, Robin replied: “Yes, it is lovely.” 0845 833 0565 kundig.co.uk

Simple is more efficient All Kundig Sanders are simple to operate. A machine that is simple to operate means it is easy to use. If it is easy to use then it is user friendly. If it is user friendly anyone can use the machine correctly. If used correctly not only are the best results achieved, but using the machine correctly means less mistakes. Less mistakes means better efficiency. Better efficiency means higher productivity. Higher productivity means higher profit and as we all know time is money. Maybe this is why Kündig-sanders are beloved by those who work with them. Easy to use, they help reduce errors under stress. A Kündig always speaks the language of it’s user – whether it be English, German, French or even Russian.

The upgraded DMC Eurosystem, the innovative solution of the Finesand orbitating pad, the new DMC SD 70 and DMC MB 90 combine to elevate SCM’s DMC sanding options way above the standard for machines of this calibre.

SCM’s upgraded DMC sanding solutions The impressive DMC Eurosystem – which has been upgraded in comparison to the Eurosand L – come with the choice of fitting high range sanding and thicknessing technologies on machines which require less demanding investments. The new solution is fitted with a crossways unit that can be positioned at the infeed, to pre-sand the unfinished piece, or at the outfeed for precision finishing. The resulting machine is flexible, completely modular and can house the units required by the user. All the modularity, technology and the possibilities of the premium machines are offered, bringing highly efficient technology to a wider audience. The Finesand orbitating pad is the innovative solution for the precision finishing of crossgrained products and composite materials. The machining unit uses a sanding pad with a large contact area, which operates on the panel with an orderly movement, thanks to the combination of two rotations that eliminate crossways scratches, rendering the abrasion homogenous across the whole sanding area. Moreover, the combination of the action of the Finesand unit with the action of the units on the DMC System – in particular with the Planetario unit – ensures the excellent finishing results on an industrial scale. Another new development can be found in the DMC SD 70 automatic widebelt sander, the new compact machine designed for industrial uses, with 2620mm long belts, a working width of 1350mm and larger rollers. It can be fitted with two or three machining units and allows for excellent levels of diversified finishes. The new DMC MB 90 is a machine which features technologies usually found on machines higher up in the range. It is fitted with units that brush and chamfer copied MDF or wood doors, that can operate either when machining unfinished pieces or after the basecoat has been applied.

FP290_pages.1.indd 56

The DMC MB 90 uses flexible abrasive tools, that are more or less aggressive based on the machining speed and the grit. The brushes are longitudinal and are very easy to remove for replacement or maintenance. Two different tools can be fitted on the same brush and by simply changing the rotation direction, different machining operations can be achieved. Recent technologies aimed at texturing solid wood and related materials are some examples of development and research: these new technologies allow users to achieve finishes found in artisan products that will enhance the raw nature of wood by introducing surface textures such as Band Saw Cutting Effect, Worm-Hole Effect

and the Carving Effect, longitudinal and transversal Waves Effect, as well as the widest variety of distressing and brushing effects. The carving unit is the super advanced technology developed by DMC (patent pending), a multifunctional solution creating the look of a truly carved surface on solid wood, veneer and MDF, this technology can be applied to many application sectors such as parquet flooring, home furniture and internal wall manufacturing. The innovative carving unit, allows the reproduction on an industrial scale of the artisan finishing effects obtained with a hand scraping tool. This highly in-demand finish emulates manual woodworking processes and

provides an authentic and valuable characteristic to wooden furniture. The system of vertical and transversal tool movements allows users to freely reproduce unlimited carving effects that differ in depth, direction and shape of the pattern grooves. For the finishing of cabinet doors or MDF internal walls, the machine is programmed with synchronized movements of the various operating units which grants the reproduction of repetitive trajectories. In this way, real drawings can be realised even with the 3D effect that is much appreciated by the market. Inside a single machine, the carving units can be paired with abrasive brushes units. It is possible to realise configurations that, in just one step, allows the creation of 3D surfaces, followed by sanding, making the panel ready for painting, laminating, papering or veneering. The complete modularity of the System range allows end users to freely combine machining units to achieve the most varied effects and to replace them quickly and economically to adapt the machine composition to market requirements. The innovative range of DMC System sanders has been designed and constructed as a veritable technological container capable of housing up to 10 machining units in a single machine, resulting in an extremely advanced solution that can meet even the most complex surface effect requirements. scmgroup.com

For almost 70 years, the Bütfering brand has established itself at the pinnacle of high performance wide-belt sanding machines and innovative surface finishing solutions. Rebranded, the newly named ‘Homag’ wide-belt sander portfolio includes a wide range of models starting at entry level, specifically designed for small workshops, through to highthroughput machines for advanced manufacturing plants.

Homag – your solution for high performance wide-belt sanding Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at Homag explains: “Homag’s impressive portfolio includes models for calibrating and finish sanding as well as lacquer sanding. All the models boast German technology and engineering – world renowned for its quality, reliability and innovation.” The compact entry level SWT 100 series The Homag sanding range starts with the compact SWT 100 series. These entry-level wide-belt sanders are equipped with up to two sanding heads. This ensures perfect sanding results from calibrating and fine sanding on solid wood and veneered panels to easy lacquer sanding. The SWT 100 series offers a working width of up to 1100mm with a sanding belt length of 1900mm. Moving up – the SWT 200 series The next in the range is the versatile SWT 200 series for sanding solid wood to veneer and intermediate sealer sanding. It uses either Homag’s acp® (air cushion sanding pad) or eps® (electronic pressure system) intelligent pressure pad systems. The acp system senses incoming work pieces and activates the rise and fall pad system to give an antidubbing facility at both leading and trailing edges of the part. It is ideal for use on solid wood or thicker veneers. The eps technology ensures the optimum sanding pressure on all areas of a work piece, guaranteeing a perfect sanding result. The eps works with a segment width of 50mm (optional 25mm) and is suitable for applications such as solid wood, veneer and lacquer sanding. The individual segments ‘float’ on the part surface with a constant pressure to protect veneered or lacquered surfaces within a tolerance range of 2mm. It is also possible to add or subtract edge segments to modify edge pressure.

B Customisable sanding solutions with the Homag SWT 300 series

The SWT 300 series – offering a wide choice of heads The SWT 300 series consists of 12 models, each with customisable head combinations to provide specific solutions for each customer. The C head is for solid wood, veneer or lacquer sanding, whilst the R head is designed for calibrating. The Q head has been specifically designed for veneer sanding, removing tape and for sanding of long cross-veneered parts. It is also a good intermediate lacquer sander and can be used to prepare for high gloss finishes. If you are looking for high quality sanding across different surfaces, the H head is ideal. It is also designed for lacquer sanding with very fine grits and solid wood

sanding, especially frame parts. For fine sanding of wood and wood materials, Homag has developed the E head. This is also good for lacquered surfaces and improving the sanding results of pre-sanded processes. Perfect sanding is about applying the right pressure at the right time and in the right place. On the Homag SWT 300 series, the eps ensures the optimum sanding pressure on all areas of a work piece, guaranteeing a perfect sanding result. A “brilliant and very clever tool” is how Dominic Ash, owner of Dominic Ash Ltd, describes Cabinet Vision, as the business looks to the future with new draughtsman, Ed Muir.

Dominic Ash looks to the future with Cabinet Vision Dominic Ash Ltd is an internal architectural joinery company operating from an 8000ft2 manufacturing facility, based near the village of Yanworth in the Cotswolds. The company, which has been established for over 20 years, is owned by Dominic Ash and his wife Kate, who work with six employees to create high-quality, impressively designed furnishings for interiors. Its vast range of bespoke creations includes kitchens, wardrobes, staircases, tables, chairs, free-standing pieces of furniture, built-in book cases, and internal doors. Its client-base include professionals such as architects and interior designers, as well as individuals looking for beautiful bespoke furnishings for their home. Dominic Ash says: “While we do focus on high end cabinetry, we also offer some basic products. A couple recently wanted some very high end products such as a high end kitchen and fireplace surround, but more basic items for their utility room, so I can cover both aspects.” Within the manufacturing process, Dominic Ash Ltd uses Cabinet Vision and Screen To Machine to produce all cabinetry from plywood, MDF and veneered MDFs. It chose to invest in Cabinet Vision a year ago to make its processes more efficient and remove human error. Dominic says: “It’s very important to us that each component is high precision so they can assemble perfectly.” Before implementing Cabinet Vision, the many processes involved for each job were time consuming and repetitive. “We were trying to eliminate some of those processes and the human error. Previously we would draw everything in CAD, break it into the components for the CNC machine, put those into a DFX file and load that into the proprietary software as individual pieces, and then through into the CNC to create nests. Cabinet Vision speeds up the process and does away with the need for manual cutting lists.” Now its CAD designs are

FP290_pages.1.indd 62

imported into Cabinet Vision where the cabinets are created, and then Screen To Machine sends the NC code to its three-axis Biesse Skill CNC router. The company had been seeing time benefits and was enjoying a streamlined manufacturing process until recently when its trained Cabinet Vision user left the business. It is now eager to evaluate the situation and get up to speed again with the support of its new employee, draughtsman, Ed Muir. Although Cabinet Vision is an extensive system with wideranging functionality, Ed Muir is finding it easy to learn with no prior experience of using the software, although, he says, there is a steep learning curve. “Cabinet Vision’s best feature for me, is keeping everything within the master template. It’s very quick to be able to adapt the template to work on a particular job. You can change any element of a cabinet, which makes creating new cabinets so much faster. You can easily adapt and change any part of an existing cabinet using the

parametric function. ”This ensures that once a panel or cabinet is created in Job A, if Job B involves a similar cabinet, the parametric function allows us to take the item from Job A and move it to Job B, adapt the size, and everything else will follow suit.” Due to the many bespoke items

that the company produces, Ed Muir says: “We have different templates of different materials for construction as well, so it’s really simple to drag and drop.” The company is now setting the foundations to take the business forward with Cabinet Vision, and possibly utilise more of what the software has to offer. It is aware that investing time up front will pay dividends later, as previously it had been more focused on using it, rather than on how it was going to use it in the future. Dominic envisages that Cabinet Vision will be an integral part of its processes in the years to come as they continue to explore new functions of the software. “It’s a brilliant and very clever tool. I can see a lot of benefits in it and it’s probably everything I thought it was going to be. For us, we’re not a factory producing the same item time and time again. We’re creating new items and new methods all the time, so we’re probably exploring Cabinet Vision a lot more than the average user would.” He has also been impressed by the speed of the software when converting designs into CAM and accurately sending NC code to the router, as well as the “superb” support the company received. dominicash.co.uk cabinetvision.com

Increased production and efficiency with Ney, Cabinet Vision and Planet Furniture Many companies within our industry are restructuring, part of this restructuring involves Software Systems to streamline production. With its vast experience, Ney can offer expert advice on streamlining production, whilst with its years of experience Cabinet Vision can offer a solution to suit the needs and increasing demands of all manufacturers. Whilst there are many design packages available which are able to produce all the way through from design, 3D rendering, cut list or nesting programs, to stock control and dispatch, Cabinet Vision is probably the most widely used within the industry and combined with their S2M (screen to machine) Module it can convert simple or complex case goods projects into machine ready G-Code for CNC flat table routers, point to point machines, panel saws, drill and dowel machines, chop saws and other specialised CNC machinery.

When Planet Furniture in Hitchin were looking for a partner to supply a CNC machine they had no hesitation to contact Ney Ltd, already a Cabinet Vision user they needed a supplier who could quickly integrate a machine with minimal disruption, Neil Dunn and Anthony Barton at Planet have their story to tell about their experience. “At Planet Furniture we have been creating beautiful bespoke furniture and bespoke kitchens from our workshop in Hitchin for over 17 years.” “The process for creating our furniture involves many design elements and one of the main programs which we use is Cabinet Vision. Cabinet Vision can be setup to be as simple or as complex as you would like, and no matter how you construct your kitchens or furniture, you can tailor the package to your requirements. Once you have gone through the basic setup, you can plan out the basics area, placing units, changing widths, heights and depths are an easy process. You can adapt each unit by adding shelves, dividers, drawers simply and in the background all the holes, grooves and fixings are put in automatically. Once the area is finished you can create reports for materials, labels, assembly sheets and drawings, and with a click of a button the screen to machine, produces nested CNC drawings, labels and programs with no need to produce tool paths manually, it literally takes a couple of minutes and it is ready to cut out on the CNC. “Cabinet Vision is an excellent package and I would highly recommend it to anybody producing bespoke furniture like ourselves. I have been using this package for the last 6 years and using many other packages in the past, it saves so much time not only in the drawing department, but in the workshop too. The CNC programmes that Cabinet Vision creates are sent to a Cosmec Fox 22S which handles it with no problems. The machine is setup perfectly, is very fast, accurate, quiet and creates minimal mess. It has enough drills and tool holders to accommodate every task that we wish to perform and with its own dedicated computer on a moveable station next to the machine, you can multitask and cut at the same time. Overall with Cabinet Vision and a Cosmec Fox 22S we would say this is a perfect setup and makes the overall design to production process quicker with minimal mistakes.” For more information on available software solutions or associated machinery, contact Ney. 02476 308100 ney.co.uk

Haldane has built a stellar reputation for quality in delivering timber handrails for high-end staircases and balustrades for both construction and private clients.

Haldane delivers impressive staircases with Staircon In a traditional industry, it has forged a modern path, investing in digital technology to help it grow and expand by delivering unrivalled quality and accuracy. It chose Staircon from Elecosoft to help it create powerful 3D designs for staircases and streamline design and production, whilst enhancing the value it provides to customers that go far beyond the boring, straight, pillar-to-post staircase of old.

Paul emphasised that design perfection is essential, which can take several iterations. “Before we used Staircon we could have to redraw stairs from scratch whenever we had changes to make.” Now, changes can be processed much faster, as he continues: “With Staircon, I can just key it in and it makes all the changes automatically.”

Reducing risk A key element of any building project is ensuring that it complies with the latest Building Regulations – whether it is a rural self-build or a multi-million-pound London townhouse. Paul is highly appreciative of the fact that the specifications are built into Staircon. “Having the Building Regulations built into the

Staircon database, provides us with complete peace of mind. If the design doesn’t comply with regulations, the system provides a warning and we can either tweak the design or consult with the client if they might wish to get a special dispensation from the local authorities.” 01844 261 700 elecosoft.com/staircon

Production efficiency Haldane has been working to lean manufacturing principles for many years and is focused on creating a highly efficient and effective production process. Its staircase projects are no exception. Paul Ramage is senior production manager and heads up Haldane’s fast-growing staircase business,” he explains: “We saw Staircon as the perfect solution to help our drawing process and improve the way we take our designs to production.” Design perfection Haldane specialises in luxury bespoke staircases, which can feature highly complex components and transitions to bring the client’s vision to life, often having to meet exact heritage or architectural design specifications.

DUST & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

www.furnitureproduction.net

Established 30 years ago, West Yorkshire-based Dust Control Systems (DCS) continues to operate as a privately-owned business and, with the combined resources available from within the DCS Group of companies, offers system design and installation, using proven products, backed up with consummate standards of customer service.

Customer-focused solutions from DCS The DCS Group of companies brings together a wealth of specialised knowledge, skills and experience to provide the UK woodworking sector with a one-stopshop for wood waste extraction and fume control equipment, spray booths and paint finishing systems, energy-saving extraction optimisation technologies, and ongoing support through comprehensive maintenance and LEV testing programmes. “The reputation that DCS has achieved in this industry has been earned by our desire to provide the most efficient solution, both technically and commercially, for any dust or fume extraction problem,” says MD Philip Oldfield, “and we are able to offer solutions that are tailored to meet the specific needs of our individual customers – whether it’s for a small standalone spray booth or a mobile dust extraction unit, a complete paint finishing system or a turnkey waste-to-energy installation, we have the necessary resources within the DCS Group of companies.” Dust Control Systems is the sole UK distributor for German extraction filter manufacturer Schuko, one of the leading extraction technology experts in Europe, and itself a family-owned concern since its inception nearly 50 years ago. Schuko operates with similar business values of providing fit-for-purpose quality products, backed by excellent customer service. Examples of installations designed and commissioned by DCS, Ecogate and Gallito regularly feature in the trade press, and the companies’ client list includes many well-known and respected furniture manufacturers such as J T Ellis in Huddersfield, and J & J Ormerod in Blackburn.

The modular Schuko filter installed by DCS provides Crystal Doors with an airflow capacity of 80,000m3/hr

In fact, whatever the manufacturing process, if it creates waste that requires extraction, a previous DCS Group installation can almost always be referenced to demonstrate the capability available from within the group to provide a bespoke solution in order to fulfil the customer’s brief – Star Bank Panel Products on Merseyside, caravan manufacturer Explorer Group, staircase specialist GD Woodworking, Crystal Doors in Rochdale, and leading interior fit-out business Cardinal Group are just a small selection of the many companies continuing to

benefit from a DCS Group installation. DCS introduced Ecogate energy-saving extraction optimisation technology to the UK back in 2010, and this proven ‘extraction-ondemand’ system has been reducing energy costs for customers ever since. The system can dramatically reduce the power consumed by an extraction system by continuously regulating fan speeds, in real time, according to machine usage. Ecogate technology is capable of achieving savings of up to 80% on extraction system running costs, giving a typical payback period of around two years, and is equally suitable for use on new extraction systems or for retrofit installations. Although a relatively new member of the DCS Group of companies, Gallito has been designing and manufacturing spray booths for joinery and furniture manufacturers for over 40 years. However, as director Mark Carson explains: “The last couple of years have been a period of sustained growth for the manufacturing side of the business and, as well as the spray booths, paint mix rooms and drying rooms the company has been known for in the past, we have now developed an extensive range of high quality, clip-fit extraction ductwork and accessories.” The company manufactures FastClip Ductwork, up to 710mm in diameter, from high quality, smooth and durable galvanised steel. All FastClip Ductwork components have rolled edges, allowing sections to be simply clipped together – reducing initial assembly time for new installations, and facilitating easy reconfiguration to accommodate changing requirements. 0800 040 7116 dcslimited.co.uk

New and better van interiors in ply can now be drawn up in CAD and assembled by Anglia Vehicle Linings at Landemere to better meet the needs of a range of users, including those selling sandwiches and snacks in all of Britain’s tourist locations. Fit-out plans in plywood can be adapted to the specific needs of a huge range of mobile platforms.

From sawdust to sandwiches at Anglia Vehicles Dust extraction for massproduced varieties of fit-out kits for alternative vehicle sizes and models soon begins to morph into quite big volumes. It all happens very quickly, according to Steve Matuska at Dustraction, and arises out of growing numbers of alternative van models, layouts and dimensions that now exist as fitout combinations for automotive vending or food distribution platforms. “That plywood off-cuts make good fuel for biomass boilers comes as no great surprise,” says Steve. “As well as disposal of panel waste, heat generation for the factory environment is itself now an important part of the waste disposal chain; wood-based waste at Anglia Vehicle Linings becomes part of a storage and feed loop for precision feeding of the new biomass boiler to generate ideal heating for the working environment.” The system as it stands at Anglia

FP290_pages.1.indd 72

Vehicles can take up to two more CNC machines, so capacity for expansion isn’t an issue at the moment. Plywood frame patterns

are laid out on the machine bed where they are digitised. “Then they are neatened up on the CAD system,” says David Byatt, CEO at

Anglia Vehicle Linings; “It all takes about a day for the CAD to do the work and give us the cutting plan we need.”

Dustraction piped up a new chipper plus the biomass boiler at Anglia and Steve Matuska put together a layout for siting the various machine elements. “I went to the suppliers of the cutting elements in the line,” he says, “and

got the waste production estimates for a working layout on the factory floor. That included our three-bag extractor unit located outside of the factory building. From a woodwaste-dedicated storage skip outside the factory,

woodwaste can now be reintroduced and precision fed to the new biomass boiler to generate ideal factory working conditions. At the moment woodwaste for fuel is burned on an as-needed basis and currently fuels around

four and a half working days per week, generating ideal operating conditions for a work-force of 20. 0116 271 3212 steve.matuska@dustraction. co.uk dustraction.co.uk

Nederman introduces new explosion isolation flap valve To ensure that dust collectors installed in combustible dust applications meet the stringent ATEX regulations, Nederman now introduces its new CARZ-N explosion isolation flap valve.

Turn-key Solutions Nederman’s integrated industry solutions mean clean, safe, profitable working

In manufacturing facilities where combustible dust is generated during production, Nederman’s primary objective is to create a safe working environment with high production efficiency. With these factors considered, the new CARZ-N explosion isolation flap valve once again demonstrates Nederman’s position as the industry benchmark. Most modern manufacturing facilities rely on dust collection systems from vendors such as

ATEX certification for St2 dust applications. Push and pull Nederman understands that not all applications are the same, so providing flexibility is vital to supplying the most suitable and best solution to dust collection issues. For this reason, the Nederman CARZ-N is the only explosion isolation flap valve in its size range that can be used in both push and pull (positive and

Nederman to provide a complete solution. Nederman has designed this new line of explosion isolation flap valves to meet the safety conscious combustible dust regulations. All St1 explosion class dust types Many explosion isolation flap valves can only be used for certain types of dust, thereby limiting the applications they can be used for and reducing future flexibility of the system. The most common type of limitation is the exclusion of metal dust. Nederman’s CARZ-N was designed, tested, and certified under EN16447:2014 to allow usage for all St1 dust types, including metal dust. Nederman is currently in the process of testing CARZ-N to achieve

negative pressure) applications. In some applications, such as in the wood industry, a push installation can reduce electricity consumption and provide considerable annual savings through its particularly low operational costs. Robust design The Nederman CARZ-N explosion isolation flap valve is constructed from welded steel and it is tested and certified for a maximum pressure of 1 bar pressure inside the valve. The robust build quality and ingenious design features of the new CARZ-N ensure that Nederman exceeds industry expectations in its pursuit for the utmost in quality, safety, innovation and environmental standards. 08452 743434 nederman.co.uk

Fercell supports ABL Doors’ expansion plans A valued customer of Fercell Engineering, ABL Doors, had some impressive expansion plans and was in need of new dust extraction units to operate alongside new machinery. ABL Doors, established in 2003 after owner Andy Williams spotted a gap in the market for manufacturing pre-hung door sets within the local and national housing sector, recently experienced rapid growth and purchased an SCM CNC machine and a second Hoffman. Fercell Engineering’s technical sales engineer, Darren Ray, met with Andy to assess ABL Doors’ needs firsthand and suggest the best dust extraction system for its new machinery. Due to the company’s layout, Fercell proposed a new dust extraction system be fitted at the rear of its site. Within this was specified a concrete base connected to the fan inlet aperture, then to a galvanised steel ducting system, rising vertically to a high level, then dropping down to each of the three individual machines.

The dust extraction system installed by Fercell Engineering comprised a Fercell Model UF3 bag filter system, due to it extracting very high dust concentration. The airtight locking containers mean the dust is trapped within the three bags and the electric filter cleaning

will keep the machine running at full capacity until the next service. The UF dust filter range is actually an evolution of the SIL dust collector range, which ABL Doors already had fitted by Fercell. It operates with even more filtration area and improved versatility.

Wood Waste Control

Fercell also organised an LEV assessment following the installation to ensure the dust is being extracted properly and legally, for the safety of ABL Doors’ staff. Fercell’s engineer also checked the previously-fitted Fercell Filter Model SIL 4 bag to ensure it was operating within CoSHH regulations. ABL’s Andy Williams comments: “We have used Fercell for nearly 15 years as our extraction experts and they have never let us down.” 01622 791414 fercell.com

Western Air Ducts has been a key element in the provision of two new dust extraction systems for the new 2665m² facility at the Somer Valley Campus that aims to become a centre of excellence for the construction industry.

Intelligent dust extraction at Bath College Western Air Ducts (WAD) teamed up with principal contractor, Midas Construction, and M&E contractor, Intoheat, to provide a dust extraction system for the new carpentry workshop and stone masonry workshop. As this was a brand-new facility to help highlight Bath College and provide the best facilities possible for up to 500 students who will use the new facilities per year it was important the dust extraction provision be both flexible and efficient. The proposals included Western Air Ducts’ patented energy-efficient damper control system Inteliair. This system has pneumatically operated dampers fitted to each of the woodworking machines within the carpentry workshop, and 14 sections within the stone masonry workshop that has an extract point for each of the 42 individual workstations. The points are controlled by

FP290_pages.1.indd 78

individual switching which can either be initialised manually or through a current sensing switch which in turn regulates the fan speed through a variable speed drive to manage the fan output depending on demand. The result provides the college with a system that is very flexible and easy to manage based upon the number of students using the equipment at any given time. Noise output of the system is also reduced and the filter life increased in conjunction with the expected 40% energy saving over a standard on/off system that this system should provide the college. The installation of this system was carried out by the WAD team of highly experienced installation engineers and was commissioned by WAD’s in-house commissioning engineers that are qualified to BOHS P601 and P602 level. 01761 416700 wad.co.uk

The Dutch industrial vacuum product range from Verhagen Leiden, newly available in the UK via sole agent, Industar, looks set to prove its worth in the woodworking sector.

Dutch industrial vacuum range proves its worth Launched here recently, Yorkshire-based Industar, says the feedback about the vacuum is extremely positive and everyone who has trialled it, comments on its superior performance. An early customer to purchase the Verhagen F3313 Industrial and Turbo model, Christopher Shaw, director of Essex-based Garner and Shaw, says that since investing in the vacuum he has been very impressed at how easy it is to use and its overall performance. Operating in the architectural and wood finishing sector, Garner and Shaw has been providing specialist wood spraying services to architects, door manufacturers, joinery companies and interior designers for over 30 years. With a 32-strong workforce employed over two sites, Christopher Shaw takes his

responsibilities to create a safe working environment seriously, making the removal of waste from dust and wood shavings a key priority. When looking to purchase a new industrial cleaner he was impressed by the features and cleaning ability of the Verhagen F3313 model and delighted with its performance. He says: “The powerful suction ensures a clean environment each and every time and I would be happy to recommend it and Industar to anyone operating in the woodworking industry, where waste is an issue.” Verhagen Leiden has been established for over 50 years and its name is synonymous with quality in its native Netherlands. The product range is well known for its durability and low maintenance requirements. Given the onerous health and safety requirements

within the woodworking industry and the necessity to keep the environment dust-free, Verhagen Leiden products have a readymade market here, says Industar director, Ad Klabbers, also from the Netherlands. He says: “The Verhagen Leiden range offers superb quality. I have grown up with the brand back home where it is a household name in the Netherlands. When we were selecting an industrial vacuum range to promote in the UK, this brand stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of its performance and durability. “It also comes with a range of additional attachments to make it particularly adaptable for most workplaces, able to penetrate the tightest corners where dust may collect. “Verhagen Leiden products can be used to quickly clean surfaces or as aspiration for production machines because they are equipped with the best filters in the market to ensure the highest possible filtration. “We are so convinced of the product’s performance and its particular suitability for the woodworking sector that we will provide a no-obligation, free demonstration for any company that is interested to put one of our products to the test in its own workshop.

“We believe it is by far the best industrial vacuum cleaner on the market today.” 0370 741 7600 industar.co.uk

Founding members of the EMADA trade association

The Extraction Manufacturers and Designers Association (EMADA) recently hosted its launch event at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

EMADA launched to combat 12,000 workplace respiratory deaths Workplace extraction and ventilation is critical to the health and wellbeing of employees and despite many employers appreciating this position, UK industry is responsible for 12,000 workplace-related respiratory deaths every year. This staggering statistic is also responsible for over 400,000 lost working days every year and there is approximately 14,000 new workplace breathing or lung-related conditions reported every year. This demonstrates that workplace respiratory health is an ongoing battle for industry. EMADA has been formed by manufacturers and designers of dust and fume extraction systems to ensure best practice and supports the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) in its mammoth task of reducing the impact of poor work practices. EMADA will collaborate with industry, the HSE and other bodies to ensure best practice is maintained and that future legislation is evolved through the support of industry experts to meet the ever-changing demands of the workplace. By helping the HSE to drive compliance and provide industry expertise and input regarding existing and future legislation, EMADA is aiming to reduce the sad toll of illnesses and deaths through work-related respiratory issues. At the launch event, EMADA association chairman Paul Rowlands said: “By forming this association, we are creating a conduit between the industry experts and the HSE. There is already a good level of regulation and guidance from the HSE, but

FP290_pages.1.indd 82

EMADA chairman Paul Rowlands addressing the members of the new association

there remain opportunities for improvement in many systems and their application. Lung latency is a long term workplace accident and EMADA is taking a moral imperative to push best practice to industry. “The statistics around workplace lung health are staggering and if the issue is not addressed it will place

a burden of an extra £1bn each year on the NHS within the next 20 years. This is not a legacy issue but a real time concern we must all address.” Also addressing the members at the newly-formed association was Sarah Mallagh, the head of health & Chemicals Unit at the HSE.

Hywel Davies, technical director of Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers, and Sarah Mallagh, head of chemicals at HSE

Sarah mentioned to attendees that: “Many employers overlook controlling contaminants at source and look to PPE equipment as a solution. We need to inform, instil and even enforce the message that control at source through effective Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems are the best-practice solution to a healthier workplace. “We can appreciate that the HSE isn’t always the best vehicle for delivering this message, so building a relationship with EMADA, the wider industry and creating priorities and stimulating activity among industry is a new strategy to tackling occupational lung disease. “The HSE has just re-published the HSG258 Control of Airborne Contaminants at Work Guide and the new guide has shifted the emphasis from the supplier to the employer. We have also launched the Healthy Lung Partnership and we will be hosting a healthy lung summit in November. We are aware of the huge task at hand and by moving emphasis and responsibility onto the employer; we will aim to make an impact on these statistics and overall workplace health.” EMADA welcomes applications for membership from extraction manufacturers and designers that are conscious of the magnitude of task at hand. emada.org.uk

Timber company benefits from investment in wood waste heater A north-west timber company is reducing its heating and waste disposal bills after buying a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Established in 2005, Hardwood Sales Ltd is an established timber importer, hardwood timber merchant and sawmilling company with over 200 years of experience within the industry. Managing director of Hardwood Sales, Tony Collins, decided to look into the benefits of purchasing a wood waste heater to reduce waste disposal costs and provide heating for the business’s 40 employees. Tony had heard about Wood Waste Technology’s reputation for manufacturing and supplying durable, reliable and easy-to-use wood waste heaters, so contacted MD Kurt Cockroft for a quote. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT5 into the Liverpool factory last year, followed by the

installation of a second woodwaste heater, a WT15 into another factory building five months later. Tony Collins says: “We’re so pleased that we were recommended to speak to Wood Waste Technology. The knowledge and advice provided helped us understand the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater for our business, and we’ve been delighted with the service received.” woodwastetechnology.com

DUST & WOODWASTE MANAGEMENT

Leading supplier of CNC technology to woodworking, furniture manufacturing, joinery and panel processing industries, AXYZ International examines the respective roles of machine suppliers and owners of routing systems and the need to build effective business partnerships for the benefit of these industries.

Why router owners should engage with supplier partnerships The business of companies serving these industries has evolved to the point where traditional supplier relationships are deemed not only to be inadequate but also likely to be detrimental to a router owner’s business and profitability. Until fairly recently, most companies in these industries expected the supplier of CNC machinery to first provide the equipment and then the necessary ongoing technical support. However, this expectation has not always been met, with companies purchasing so-called off-the-shelf CNC routers having to rely on third-party support for necessary maintenance, repairs and spare parts. The potential for financial loss is very real if this support is not available in the event of a machine malfunction or total breakdown. For a machine supplier to be considered by its customers as a full business partner, it is necessary to transcend the traditional perception of a customer’s requirements and develop a much broader understanding of these and the longer-term objectives. Ideally, the supplier should have direct involvement at the outset with a customer’s decision-making procedures in order to make the partnership work efficiently. The role of the CNC machine supplier can be equated to the wider aspirations of companies in the industries mentioned. Traditional manual methods of manufacturing that were both time-consuming and costly have all but been replaced with the emergence of CNC machinery generally and of routers in particular. The trailblazer for this evolution in CNC routing technology has been the development of CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software and toolpath software in particular that can control routing/cutting tools with a level of precision that conventional manual processes, regardless of how proficient, would be unable to match. As CNC machining technology continues to advance, suppliers can now offer a host of productionenhancing accessories such as

FP290_pages.1.indd 84

multiple spindles, drill blanks and automatic tool change (ATC) systems. In consequence, owners of routers in small- to mediumsized businesses can now enjoy the luxury of customised machines that hitherto were available for and made financially possible by much larger companies. This has enabled these smaller companies to tender for and secure work that was previously the exclusive domain of these larger companies. With the current level of increased competition, companies can no longer be content with a supplier merely providing the equipment

needs prior to the purchase of a machine. For business partnerships to succeed, the supplier needs to understand the frequently complex challenges encountered by its machine-owning customers. The foundation of this understanding will be a strong familiarity with a customer’s manufacturing processes and how these are controlled. The loss of manufacturing control when thirdparty outsourcing is employed can impact heavily on financial resources, although time remains the main issue.

For business partnerships to succeed, the supplier needs to understand the frequently complex challenges encountered by its machine-owning customers. which is adequate to meet perceived production requirements but which is subsequently found to have little or no technical support and product training. As a consequence, there is a need for suppliers to adopt a collaborative approach with their business partners in order to guarantee a successful return on investment (ROI). There is simply too much at stake in the context of business growth and prosperity. Evolving technologies have led to a corresponding change in the role of the machine supplier, as it is important for CNC machine owners to consider both current and future

Understandably, a customer would be anxious about the potential loss of revenue for every day a project could be delayed by third-party involvement. A business could encounter difficulties when it has a commitment to timesensitive projects and then fails to deliver within the designated time frame due to the use of third-party outsourcing and this dependency is something of a wild card in the entire process. Most suppliers and end-users of CNC machine technology recognise the need for product training prior to, during and after installation of the equipment.

Every machine owner needs to make provision for changes in employees and the need to train new employees and suppliers must enable this to happen via ongoing training support. Furthermore, changes on the part of machine owners in their manufacturing processes can be made more challenging if this ongoing training is not available. These changes do not have to be disruptive if the right training programme is in place at the outset. Furthermore, as technical support is a major consideration for CNC machine owners, particularly in relation to machine maintenance, remote diagnostics should always be made available by the supplier. Customers also need to review a supplier’s service record, expertise and reliability as part of their due diligence research procedures prior to purchase of a machine. Such support should not end after initial training and machine installation. A machine owner’s current and predicted future objectives can change, at which time machine upgrades and new training may be required and provision must be made for this eventuality. An effective business partnership between a supplier and its customers is integral to the success of both. It is incumbent on the part of a supplier to provide guidance to customers in order to effectively meet new challenges and this is the essence of any business partnership. AXYZ International is a leading global manufacturer of CNC routing and knife-cutting systems. Since its inception in 1990 as a twoperson operation, the company has evolved rapidly to become one of the world’s foremost authorities on routing and cutting technology. With a reputation for the quality and depth of its product research and development, AXYZ International has manufactured and installed over 10,500 CNC machines, all of which have been supported by ongoing technical support, on-site maintenance and a 24/7 spare parts and accessories facility. 01952 291600 axyz.co.uk

Weinig has made a further addition to the Conturex CNC system with a new solution for furniture and frame construction. The C125 Vario Furniture is based upon proven patented clamping table technology and combines maximum output with optimal flexibility.

Weinig presents new CNC solution for furniture and frame construction The new development is designed as a double-part system with special individual clamping technology. In keeping with this design, the C125 Vario Furniture has parallel charging and unloading. This allows an output of two parts per minute in furniture applications. Two interpolating five-axis heads ensure optimal flexibility with complex curved parts. The large parts buffer for up to 240 parts fulfils the prerequisites for long-term unmanned production. Integration into the Weinig Solid Wood Work Flow (WF) system ensures dynamic process sequences optimised in real time. Behind this stands an integrated software solution from idea to finished work piece. Besides the benefits of a standardised data-set for all production processes, and the entire peripherals, WF includes parts identification via different processes, work piece data administration including an interface with angle units and monitoring via app and desktop. Owing to the comprehensive digital architecture, WF is ideally suited to virtual commissioning.

Weinig CAM: creating the perfect work piece quickly and easily

One highlight of the C125 Vario Furniture is the new Weinig CAM. This is a 3D CAD/CAM system, that can be integrated into every Conturex going forward. Simple and fast programming is just one of its many outstanding qualities. As a geometry-based system, Weinig CAM also offers a fully-fledged drawing program with smart commands.

All standard CAD formats, such as dxf, dwg, solid, stl, rhino and parasolid, are supported. Unlike conventional systems that do not allow 3D surface processing, Weinig CAM includes 3D five-axis interpolation. Other customer benefits include greater reliability thanks to detailed simulation down to single-item batches, simple operation via macro programming and modular design from 2D to 3D interpolation. Furthermore, Weinig CAM significantly increases flexibility. Unlike comparable systems, installation takes place in the

office. Product manager Michael Hemmerich says: “This is not only a general technical trend, it is also completely consistent since the Conturex is a fully-automated production machine. In the C125 Vario Furniture, Weinig marks a new milestone in the evolution of the Conturex system. However, the designers are already thinking further ahead: the long-term objective of the latest stage of development is to offer individual automation solutions for a wide variety of solutions in the furniture sector. weinig.co.uk

Wade Spring now hold five FIRA Gold certifications Wade Spring has achieved its fifth FIRA Gold Product certification, this time for their ‘Recliner Springs, 4mm Full Arc Kinked Medium Loop’ and ‘10G/3.25mm Super Loop Back Springs’. This follows on from their Gold Certification for their ‘Zig Zag Sinuous Springs’ achieved in March 2016, then more recently in September 2017 for their ‘Fishmouth Springs’ and ‘11g/2.95mm Super Loops Back Springs’. The FIRA Gold Certification is the recognised quality mark for products or installation services. To achieve FIRA Gold the springs were assessed against specified durability levels through rigorous tests conducted by FIRA International. After being in a conditioning environment, set at 23c (+2%) and 50% (+5%) relative humidity for more than 16 hours, spring samples were subject to a static load test of 800 newtons (backs), and a 2300 newton static load test (seats). Both samples performed well and passed. The springs then underwent a 100,000 cycle durability test to assess long-term performance, again both samples passed.

On the 100,000 cycle durability test, the load test for the 4.00mm Medium Loop Seat Springs was @160kgs, and the load test for the 10g Superloop Back Springs was @48kgs. Speaking on the latest Gold Certification, Chris Woodcock, Managing Director, at Wade Spring says: “We’re delighted to have two more products recognised for FIRA Gold. Ensuring we are supplying the furniture industry with quality springs is of paramount importance. “Whilst we do have our own inhouse testing facilities, we see it as crucial that UKAS accredited labs, such as FIRA International, also test our springs. By striving for FIRA Gold it gives our customers added

confidence that an independent third party has assessed our products.” Alongside Wade Spring, there are also a further 44 organisations from across the furniture supply chain who hold a Gold award for products (including bathroom, bedroom, component, kitchen, office,

Pioneering wood joining

upholstery and worktop products) and 14 organisations who hold FIRA Gold for their installation services. Details on how to become a FIRA Gold holder is available from www. fira.co.uk/gold, which also includes a full list of current holders. fira.co.uk
