COM M E NT Speaking at a press preview of Manhattan Loft Gardens, property developer Harry Handelsman presented us with his vision of a new vertical community in East London. The project is a bold one: a 42-storey, double-cantilevered skyscraper with 248 loft apartments, a 145-room hotel and two restaurants situated in the heart of Stratford’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Handelsman’s primary concern was to eradicate the feeling of anonymity commonly associated with high-rise buildings. “No matter where you travel and where you go, what I always find is that the residential entrance in other buildings has a very nice concierge, maybe a great piece of art and a place where people can sit down – but it’s empty of life, there’s no atmosphere,” he says. With its triple-height communal lobby space and three spectacular sky gardens cut into the 7th, 25th and 36th floors, Manhattan Loft Gardens goes out of its way to promote a sense of community and social energy, whether its inhabitants are staying for a weekend, or a year. Residents can make full use of the 24-hour hotel concierge service, while hotel guests can visit the zen alpine retreat on the 36th floor for morning yoga classes with a view. There is, all in all, a sense of fluidity and fun that befits the blurring lines of meeting place, hotel and home. Speaking of blurring lines and broadened offerings, our focus on ‘Mobile Hospitality’ this issue sheds light on the convergence of the hotel and transport sectors. We take a look at Muza Lab’s design for South America’s first luxury sleeper train on page 84, while RPW Design’s Heather McLellan talks about the firm’s recent refurbishment of two P&O Cruise Ships – Arcadia and Oceana – on page 80. Elsewhere, we hear from L’Avventura & Associates founder, James Lee; explore the upcoming launch of new hospitality concept, Inhabit Hotels, and take in some truly stunning new projects from the likes of Gachot Studios, OHLAB and ASH NYC.

A BOLD, ARCHITECTURAL GESTURE Jestico + Whiles’ design for a 145-key new-build hotel on Paul Street, Shoreditch, has been granted planning permission by London Borough of Hackney. Described in the case officer’s report as “a bold, architectural gesture which is high quality and considered to be a positive addition within this varied local context”, the proposal provides legibility to the streetscape and references the area’s rich history. The existing site on Paul Street, excavated to first basement level, has been vacant and neglected for over half a century, having been occupied previously by back-to-back Victorian warehouses. While the site is not in a conservation area, it is in a fascinating area of disparate architectural languages, dominated by Victorian and Edwardian warehouses. www.jesticowhiles.com

DINE ON THE SEABED Europe’s first underwater restaurant pays tribute to the rocky coastline and marine life of Norway’s southernmost tip with its awe-inspiring design. Lying, halfsubmerged, against the craggy shore of Norway’s tempestuous southern coastline, Under is quite some architectural feat. Its 34m-long monolithic form, which rests on the seabed five metres below and protrudes ten metres above the water’s surface, was conceived by pan-disciplinary Norwegian practice, Snøhetta. The palette of the textile-clad interior becomes darker and more intense the deeper one travels below the water’s surface. These striking bespoke materials evoke the colours of a sunset dropping into the ocean – beginning with sunset pink and intense coral, before moving through sea green and culminating in midnight blue as one arrives in the dining room. www.snohetta.com

Q&A
James Lee, L’Avventura & Associates Following a successful 20-year career in the Asia-Pacific hotel design industry, James Lee made the decision to create L’Avventura & Associates – a platform that brings together boutique designers from around the world as partners on Chinese projects. Here, James talks about the formative experiences that shaped his love for design, the philosophy behind this latest chapter in his professional life, and his innovative new system for the design firms of the future . . .
How did you first discover your passion for design? Design for me is just art. I was born in an ancient city located in Jiang Nan and grew up in a beautiful landscape. I began exploring art at a very young age and one of my first memories is drawing on my bedroom wall. I fell in love with design by observing nature but now one of my main inspirations is my personal experience of my city and family. These memories never change: the temperature of a cup of tea, the sound of bare
feet running and laughter in the courtyard, the whisper of wind, the dripping of water from the roof and the sound of melting snow. At 29 years old, I realised design comes from the heart and not from the eyes or the hands when I read a magazine introducing Japanese architect Aoki Jun, who designed Louise Vuitton’s flagship store in Tokyo. His notion of design is very abstract – like blending oil into water in a container and then discovering that these two liquids react by dividing themselves rather than existing as one. This was the first
moment which opened my mind and said, “Hi, James, this is the art of design!” Could you tell me a little more about your professional background? After graduating with a BA degree in interior design in 1997, I achieved the 1st Golden award from Asia Pacific Interior Design in Hong Kong at 29 years old. I then lived in London and graduated from the University of London, Chelsea College of Arts with a Master’s degree in Interior and Spatial Design in 2005. After graduating, I joined Chhada Siembieda & Associates (CSA) who designed the Four Seasons in New York and the Ritz Carlton in Sanya. As a senior designer there I worked on the iconic Macau Banyan Tree Resorts. After this, I worked at Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) where I was promoted to project director and design director, managing a team based in Hong Kong and two others in Melbourne. This job gave me a global vision and remit, allowing me to work with international designers for high-end hotels. What do you feel is the single most important thing that people should know about you, or your work? I am contemplative but innovative and I love telling stories with my work. My motto is, “Design everything as if you were an artist and tell a unique story.” I look at each project as if it were a piece of art, and imagine any space to be like a sculpture that I can carve and cut to reveal what is important.

Q&A
What motivated you to set up L’Avventura & Associates, and could you tell me more about the company’s philosophy? As an artist, I like to break boundaries. I think most designers become accustomed to just solving problems with their creations, and they do not define what their design will become years later. I am inclined to think about everything from the opposite point of view to this. At the moment, for example, I am working on a series of new collections for the Palace Museum of China. These collections aim to define the new vision of ‘Asian art’, as fun, abstract, cool and stylish and not just focused on Zen and quietness. Could you discuss some of the most memorable hospitality projects L’Avventura has completed? My partners at L’Avventura and I have completed many landmark hotels around the world. Recently, we completed the Grand Hotel in Beijing. Other previous projects include the Grand Hotel Zhuhai and the Qube hotel in Jingzhou. What are you working on at the moment? Our design style is “lean luxury” – a clean and minimalist design that goes beyond only being traditional. L’Avventura is currently designing one of the top 10 villas in Vancouver CA, a
“A designer is not only a developer and I believe that hospitality designers also need to design furniture, texture and even artwork” Spanish-style villa in Sydney, a hotel by the Spanish hotel group Barcelo in Thailand, the Hilton Double Tree in Xi’an, the Mumian Hotel by the Hyatt Group, and a CEO’s penthouse in Beijing. We are also preparing a big show at the Palace Museum in Beijing this year for the 600th birthday of the Museum. The show will include the works of 5-8 artists in collaboration with Lavven. We collaborate with studios in the US, Australia, and Europe from our office in Hong Kong. What are your framing ambitions for the company going forwards? To be innovative rather than just creative! L’Avventura and Lavven have deep roots in cultural traditions, but we also knock down walls to innovate. We re-define interior design to create an artistic soul within every project. We are innovating a new system called “Five” centred on the idea that it could only take five people to run a design firm in future: the CEO, the CFO, the COO, the Director and the Stylist. All other production will be handled in a data centre in the cloud space.

Q&A
What area of the world excites you in terms of its design potential? Different design themes excite me more than different countries. The ones that I find particularly interesting are ‘Masculine Romantic’, ‘Lean Luxury’, ‘Futuristic Rustic’ and ‘Cool Zen’. These themes are all interesting and blend different styles. What do you feel will be the key issues and challenges affecting the hospitality design industry in the coming years? The most challenging issue in hospitality design is that most hotels within a group use the same designers. This just creates clones of the original hotel within the same group. All over the world, hotel groups are hiring almost exactly the same designers to work on all of their hotels and keep the business’ design DNA. I think that in the coming years, identity will become the most important issue rather than a design just being beautiful! Another issue in the industry is copyright. Hospitality designers normally select mood images from the internet and follow them to the design and development stages. A designer is not only a developer and I believe that hospitality designers also need to design furniture, texture and even artwork. We are artists after all – why just stop at hospitality design? What are your passions outside of the design world? I have been a professor of Hospitality Design at the Asia and Pacific Hospitality Design Association since 2014. I teach senior students – inspiring the younger generation of designers is my passion. www.laanyc.com

HOSPITALITY PROFILE
Regarded as the fastest-growing travel sector, and estimated to be worth a staggering $639b, wellness tourism is perceivably changing the face of hospitality. Tapping into this market is relatively straightforward, but delivering an authentic and memorable wellness experience amidst the noise is less so. This is why the launch of new hotel brand, Inhabit Hotels, has generated so much interest ahead of its first opening this summer. “Time spent working as consultants in established, yet often impersonal hotels, got us thinking about the modern traveller and what they might value in the place they choose to lay their head,” explains Inhabit Hotels’ co-founder, Nadira Lalji. “Uniform hotel rooms can feel isolating. And when you’re on the road, wellbeing often takes a backseat in favour of fast food and late‐night channel hopping. Factor in jet lag and a hectic work schedule and it’s no wonder travellers are left feeling completely out of sorts. “My cousin Rahim and I started thinking:
why don’t hotels actively encourage you to focus on your wellbeing, thereby offering a truly restorative experience? And so, in early 2017, we set out to create such a place. A place that makes it easy to eat well, find the time to exercise, breathe deeply and sleep soundly.” The brand’s first property will be a 90-room hotel, Inhabit London, set in six Georgian townhouses on Southwick Street in London’s Paddington district. Wellness and restoration are the brand’s core tenets, around which its interiors, public spaces, F&B offering and jam-packed schedule of guest activities are oriented. “We have broken wellness down into a series of pillars that we live by, from the physical to the emotional, the social to the intellectual,” explains Nadira. “For instance, everything encountered at Inhabit is intended to be mindexpanding, so there are books on wellness in the library and a programme of talks and supper clubs hosted in collaboration with our partners.

“In terms of boosting our guests’ physical wellness, we have worked with sleep consultants on the best ways to achieve a perfect night’s slumber – prioritising blackout blinds, temperature control, a soothing colour palette and a minimal layout to help de‐clutter the mind in rooms – and partnered with a top health‐driven food company on a nutritionallybalanced all‐day menu in the cafe. “As movement is key, our manager will run with guests every morning and we have built meditation pods on site so guests can pause for 10-minute guided meditation sessions, zoning in on specific areas, such as jet lag, to recharge. “On the flipside, restoration is also about mental stimulation so we will work with local communities, from crafting to yoga, and hope to help our guests to engage with their passions – and perhaps discover something new in the process!” Inhabit London’s interiors, too, have been optimised to create a calming escape from the frenetic pace of the city. Designed by Holland Harvey Architects and Caitlin Henderson Design, the hotel fuses Scandinavian design influences with traditional British heritage and touches of Eastern flair.

The psychological impact of colour has informed the soft interior palette – shades of green in the communal areas symbolising relaxation and harmony, and gentle blue and grey in the rooms promoting good sleep. Inspired by the abundant foliage of Southwick Mews, jasmine, ivy and various ferns have been planted around the townhouses, while accents of greenery inside complement the property’s limestone floors and oak joinery to create a natural, honest design. Contemporary British pieces from Another Country and London-based social enterprise, Goldfinger Factory, blend with original furniture by Scandinavian greats such as Hans J. Wegner and Gubi. In celebration of ingenuity and talented craftspeople, Inhabit Hotels has incorporated textiles and accessories from social enterprises Nkuku, Aerende and Kalinko. Artwork is another fundamental aspect of the scheme, Nadira explains. “We have curated the collection based on research around nature, wellness, mindfulness, creativity and meditation,” she says. “From textiles to graphic design, painting to photography and digital
Georgi Venelinov, is mixed with works by emerging talent such as photographer Dev Joshi and textile artist Attalie Dexter. Inhabit Hotels’ multi-dimensional approach to wellness will no doubt have broad appeal, but it may strike a particular chord with a demographic increasingly seeking out brands that chime with their own environmental or philanthropic philosophies. Inhabit Hotels’ selective approach to the brands and businesses it works with captures the sense of integrity the market is leaning towards. Amongst these brands is: natural, plant-based Ren Skincare; Belu – a UK-based company that produces carbon-neutral and ethically-sourced bottle waters, donating 100% of its profits to WaterAid; and online reuse platform, Globechain, which enables the redistribution of goods to social causes rather than landfill. Another key point of discussion in recent times has surrounded the role of hospitality venues within a local community, particularly in population-dense urban areas where hotels are increasingly considered the “living rooms of the city”.
Nadira and Rahim are passionate about integrating their properties with the local community, and already have ambitious plans in the pipeline. “Another aim of the hotel is for our townhouses to create a hub for conversation and activity in the Paddington community,” affirms Nadira. “We have been working closely with Paddington Business Improvement District and there’s a shared vision to reinstate a village. “It’s an exciting area undergoing constant redevelopment and one of the most active sites of regeneration and office construction in London. We are excited to be inserting ourselves in this thriving community, offering activities centred around wellness – from meditation classes to crafting and book clubs in our library.” With Inhabit London’s imminent opening and work soon to be begin on a second property, it’s an exciting time for this ambitious new brand to make its mark. www.inhabithotels.com www.hollandharvey.com www.caitlinhendersondesign.com

2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Swedish design powerhouse, Bolon – and what an incredible seven decades it’s been. The brand’s bold, forward-looking approach threads through the three generations that have each added and shaped it into the globally-renowned name it is today. Annica and Marie Eklund, granddaughters of Bolon’s founder, Nils-Erik Eklund, assumed the mantle in 2003 and made a life-altering decision to expand into woven vinyl flooring. “Even if we were a traditional floor company, we didn’t behave like one,” they explain. “Early on, we made two large investments: the first was to invest in the machinery in our factory in Ulricehamn, where we brought in most of
the technological advancements needed to make our flooring almost entirely in-house with a better quality to suit the contract market. The second was to create marketing campaigns that would position us as a design brand.” In the ensuing 16 years, Annica and Marie have transformed the business from a traditional weaving mill into an international design brand that collaborates with some of the world’s most acclaimed innovators and creatives. In celebration of its 70-year milestone, and of the culture that has inspired its success, Bolon has launched a new collection – Diversity. Three new designs – Bling, Buzz

and Bouquet – encourage variation and unique combinations that are ideally suited to hospitality design. Bling features a twisted, chain link pattern that is large in scale and bold in its execution. “It’s actually inspired by a hand-drawn chain that I made,” says Bolon designer, Petra Lundblad. Bouquet, too, originates from a watercolour hand-painted by Petra, and features a melange of four different weft colours, while Buzz brings a softer, more modest feel with its feathered, textile-like appearance. Imbued with a glossy, shimmering weft, it works well for larger areas.
“Even if we were a traditional floor company, we didn’t behave like one” The designs all draw from a carefullyconsidered family of colours. Four base shades – grey, beige, brown or black – have been interwoven with a selection of vibrant earthy hues – such as terracotta, aquamarine and pine green – in Bolon’s jacquard looms. As such, Bling, Buzz and Bouquet can just as happily be used in isolation or combined within
the same area for a more dramatic aesthetic. “Buzz would work well within larger hospitality spaces, such as reception areas, to create a sense of flow and reflect the light,” Petra explains, “whereas if you have an area, such as a meeting room, where you want to be creative, Bling could be really striking.” Diversity promotes an emboldened approach

to hospitality design, positing flooring as an instrumental architectural element from which the surrounding scheme can flow. The collection is also indicative, however, of a brand that celebrates originality, and which recognises the value of differing talents and perspectives. “The theme of diversity is reflected in the flooring itself, in the way that these three totally different patterns combine together, but also in the company’s bold and playful approach to design,” affirms Petra. “That’s a reflection of the owners and family, who are very much
visionaries within their field. “It also captures how we work at Bolon; I work as a designer in the R&D unit, but we all mesh together as a wider team.” 2019 might mark a year of celebration for the Bolon team, and indeed an opportunity to reflect on its incredible journey thus far, but standing still has never been an option for Annica and Marie. “If we see an opportunity or a trend, we never have to wait,” they confirm. “We can act on it straight away and catch it before it’s gone.” www.bolon.com

Hôtel Peter & Paul New Orleans, USA Following a four-year restoration, this former Catholic church and school in the heart of the Marigny has been repurposed as a 71-key hotel.
N ewly-opened Hôtel Peter & Paul is the result of a joint partnership between real estate and design firm, ASH NYC, and prominent New Orleans resident, Nathalie Jordi. The property is set in a historic 19th century site comprising four buildings – a church, rectory, schoolhouse and convent – which have been carefully restored and converted into an elegant 71-key hotel by architectural firm, studioWTA. St Peter and Paul church and its accompanying rectory were designed by celebrated New Orleans architect, Henry Howard, in 1860. A small convent was added in 1890, while the school was built in 1900 by Diboll & Owen. For 124 years, the Marianite Sisters of the Holy Cross taught at the school, until declining enrolments led to its closure in 1993, with the church ceasing operation in 2001.

In its current iteration, the School House contains a reception area, lounge and 59 guest rooms. The former classrooms, school theatre, and sleeping lofts have been thoughtfully redesigned, featuring a colour palette drawn from iconic 14-18th century religious paintings and tapestries. ASH NYC has incorporated many of the property’s original features into its reimagined aesthetic, including the cypress wood mouldings, stained glass windows, wainscoted corridors, marble fireplaces, and the original rectory flag pole, which now hosts the Hôtel Peter & Paul flag. The furnishings throughout have either been designed and constructed locally by regional artisans, or have been sourced from the great antique fairs of Europe and several of New Orleans’ finest estates. The guest rooms within the School
House range from “School House Petite” and “School House Classic”, with private bathrooms, hand-painted striped tile showers and custom Italian linens, to “School House Two of Queens” with two plush queen beds. The Rectory, meanwhile, is a soft red brick building that now serves as the hotel’s lobby and F&B spaces, alongside five further guest rooms washed in a warm peach lime paint and adorned with opulent canopy beds, dormant antique fireplaces and sumptuous marble bathrooms. The F&B programming at Hôtel Peter & Paul is led by the New Orleans-based Bacchanal Group. Influenced by the city’s Marigny neighbourhood – which fuses a New World location with Old World roots – the ground floor of the former rectory incorporates The Elysian Bar.

Named after the ‘Elysian Fields’ of classical mythology, this amber-hued room with fretwork on the walls and a suspended bamboo ceiling above, serves up niche wines, specialty cocktails, and a menu designed by chef Alex Harrell. The rectory’s former chapel has been converted into a café, complete with a trompe l’oeil citrus grove, while a sun room provides a perfect breakfast spot, complete with red and white tiles and citrus yellow walls. Simple wooden furniture lines the glass walls, which are dressed in full-length linen lace sheers, while cascading vines create a verdant all-season escape. At the heart of the house are two inviting parlours, which provide space for guests to read, relax or socialise. Italianate marble fireplaces here are joined by a smattering of French and Italian bamboo and rattan vintage pieces, plus a collection of national and international periodicals for guests to peruse. The 9450ft² decommissioned church has been refurbished in the same sensitive manner. Honouring the memories and life-altering events that took place within its walls, the space now brings the community together through a host of private and public gatherings. The final component of the redevelopment is the convent. Once the home of Marianite nuns, it now houses seven tranquil guest rooms with a colour palette of warm white lime, punctuated by Palladian blue. All seven convent rooms have canopied queen or king beds, large bathrooms and luxury amenities, some featuring iron clawfoot tubs and private planted balconies. www.ashnyc.com www.studiowta.com

Shinola Hotel Detroit, USA Recognised for its luxury watches and premium leather goods, Shinola has added a new string to its bow with the launch of its first hospitality venture.
Since establishing its manufacturing facility in Detroit’s historic Argonaut Building back in 2011, Shinola has become one of the most significant voices in the city’s ongoing regeneration. The brand’s highly-anticipated move into hospitality brings another dimension to its lifestyle offering, as well as creating a unique social “living room” within the city’s burgeoning downtown corridor. Developed in partnership with real estate firm and fellow Detroit resident, Bedrock, Shinola Hotel marries two lovingly-restored buildings – the onetime T.B. Rayl & Co. department store and the historic former Singer sewing-machine store – with the addition of three thoughtful new annexes. The main structure now occupied by the hotel was built by the T.B. Rayl Company in 1915, and features architect Wirt Rowland’s characteristic use of terracotta.

With its limestone-clad neoclassical façade, the adjacent Singer Building is rather more understated in style, though nonetheless striking. Home to the Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1936, the property was designed by Detroit-based Smith, Hinchman and Grylls, which still exists today as the SmithGroup. To realise the image and DNA of Shinola in hotel form, the brand selected NYC design firm, Gachot Studios, whose portfolio includes New York’s Smyth Tribeca Hotel and Brooklyn’s Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club. “We designed two major retail projects for Shinola; the downtown Los Angeles and Brooklyn locations,” explains Christine Gachot, co-founder of Gachot Studios. “While working on these projects, I caught wind of the fact that a hotel concept was being floated for the brand. “My background is in hotel design and development, which I’m passionate about, so I didn’t hesitate to interject myself into the conversation when the opportunity arose. It was quite funny, in fact, but sometimes you just have to got for it!” Armed with their implicit understanding of

“We, as a team, “lived” the brand for quite some time,” she explains. “For Shinola in particular there was so much to draw from because the company’s aesthetic is rooted in a history that is uniquely American. The brand represents expert craftsmanship, comfort, ease and – most importantly – is dedicated to the community. “We sought to bring these ideas to life by creating a friendly space with a residential sensibility where all will feel welcome.” Shinola Hotel offers 129 spacious guest rooms, awash with hardwood flooring, cosy mid-century modern furniture, earthy tones and loft-style windows that provide plenty of natural light. Each of the suites will have a coveted Shinola Runwell turntable and a curated collection of vinyl. One of the key challenges for Gachot Studios was achieving continuity across the various structures, old and new, that make up the hotel. As a result, there are subtle variations of layout from room to room. “It was a design marathon of sorts, but we enjoyed every bit of it,” Christine affirms. “Connecting historic and newly proposed buildings presented us with a number of architectural irregularities to work around and resulted in the creation of over 57 room types for 129 rooms!”
Shinola Hotel’s public spaces incorporate a lobby restaurant, mezzanine lounge, conservatory, and magnificent event spaces. Its impressive F&B offering has been overseen by Andrew Carmellini and NoHo Hospitality Group partners, Josh Pickard and Luke Ostrom. Tucked beyond the lobby area, the Evening Bar creates an intimate enclave with low-slung seating and soft lighting. American beer hall, The Brakeman, offers rotating drafts of craft beer from the Midwest, while Southern Italian
restaurant, San Morello, serves up authentic, wood-fired dishes and house-made pastas. The social energy of the hotel – as a multi-functional hub for the community – is reflected in its warm, inviting interiors. Inspired by the aesthetic of London private members’ clubs, caramel, camel and gray feature heavily in the hotel’s palette, along with soft blush, deep greens and rich woods. Oilrubbed bronze, soft leather, plush mohair and American white oak add to the luxurious feel.

In keeping with Shinola’s emphasis on quality craftsmanship, the hotel’s flooring, furniture, wallcoverings and accessories have been custom-designed for the project, and are predominantly manufactured in the US. Indeed, the hotel has partnered with several brands in the Michigan area, including Pewabic, known for its covetable ceramics, Booms Stone Company, responsible for the elegant stone finishes in the guest rooms, and Great Lakes Stainless, whose decorative metals can be found throughout the hotel’s public spaces. Library Street Collective, an esteemed Detroit-based gallery, has curated a provocative mix of art for the hotel with a broad representation of both local and international artists. The hotel’s reception area will become its own striking work of art; Detroit artist Margo Wolowiec will cover four walls, floor-to-ceiling with custom woven panels to create an immersive environment of colour and energy.
The materials and finishes used throughout the property chime carefully with the look and feel of the building’s original architecture. Marbleised wallpaper mimics marble found buried in the Rayl’s building, while the cream hallway walls feature accents of Shinola blue – a signature hue developed by Gachot from a lone paint chip unearthed in the Singer building. This level of craftsmanship and attention to detail even extends to the bathroom fixtures, for which Waterworks took cues from caseback details of Shinola’s luxury watches, and the room keys, which feature custom leather fobs with an engraving of the room number and the hotel’s street address. “We always set out to create a cohesive visual narrative that respects the past while looking forward,” Christine explains. “The building’s bones are laden with details and show the high value placed on craftsmanship at that time. Luckily, Shinola as a brand represents these values.
“As soon as you enter the ‘living room’, you are surrounded by art from local artists, Americanmade furniture, and warm light”
“As soon as you enter the ‘living room’, you are surrounded by art from local artists, American-made furniture, and warm light. The defining touch points are in the feel of the leather and the quality of the fabrics ... you should try the sofas!” While it is as yet unclear whether Shinola plans to evolve its hotel concept into a national or even international chain, the brand and its partners have nevertheless created a meaningful new Detroit institution. www.shinolahotel.com www.gachotstudios.com

Euphoria Retreat Mystras, Greece Set amidst the Byzantine splendour of Mystras, with Mount Taygetus as its majestic backdrop, Euphoria Retreat presents a compelling wellness concept.
A successful, yet extremely busy career as an investment banker led Marina Efraimoglou, Euphoria Retreat’s owner, to Chinese medicine, and more specifically to the Five Elements theory that underpins the resort’s offering today. After a decade-long search for the perfect location, Marina felt an affinity with the tranquillity and cultural significance of UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mystras. Having settled on the site, Marina enlisted the help of Natalia Efraimoglou & Partners – her sister’s architectural practice – as well as Athenian firm, Deca Architecture, to realise her vision. The retreat’s philosophy and architecture have a deeply symbotic relationship, from the sunken spa, which reflects the belief that proximity to the earth promotes healing, to the prominent use of spheres and interplay of light and shade throughout the property. Classical Byzantine artwork provided a key source of inspiration for the property’s interiors, while the colour palette is characteristic of the region’s rich iconography.

Domes and arches provide elegant curves, blending with a palette of soothing yellows and golds. At the centre of the resort’s offering is its remarkable spa. Built into the mountainside, so that it is quite literally at one with nature, it spans four levels that each represent a distinct passage in the guest’s wellness journey. At its core is an empty 25m-deep water well, encircled by a spiral staircase that joins up the four different levels. The first floor is the spa’s entry point. As guests enter the soothing reception area, complete with its Byzantine-style domes and curved walls, the feel and temperature immediately shifts. The second level is dominated by the spa’s innovative signature Sphere Pool. Inspired by the immense dome of the Hagia Sophia in Instanbul, the sphere is half-filled with water, so that it is waist deep at its outer rim and deep enough to allow full submersion at its centre. Guests can glide within its womb-like form to the soothing sounds of music, dolphins and whales, or experience a gentle massage from the hydrotherapy jets positioned on the walls.

The pool relaxation area provides space for further peace and rejuvenation. In keeping with the geometrical symbolism visible throughout the spa, the space features a skylight and a striking circular table at its heart. Views over the property’s landscaped gardens, and the valley of orange and lemon groves, aid its peaceful ambience. Also situated on this floor is a marble-covered Tepidarium, a striking Byzantine Hammam, circular finnish sauna, steam room, experiential showers, cold plunge pool, speleotherapy-salt room, watsu pool, treatment relaxation area, an ice fountain and a sanctuary deprivation pool. The third floor holds 15 treatment rooms – two of them doubles – that are designed to optimise guests’ experience of the many treatments on offer, while the fourth floor is home to two yoga/meditation rooms. Supporting the diverse and considered spa offering, the resort’s restaurant, Gaia, serves up a menu of wholesome, locally-sourced dishes. Wooden monastic tables and bespoke lighting encourage guests to feel part of the resort
community and interact with one another, while an inner courtyard and a paved terrace with views over the village provide an attractive al fresco seating option. 45 rooms and suites complete the resort’s offering, with spectacular views of either the Castle and the village, or Euphoria Retreat’s private forest. The design team has opted for a minimalistic approach within the guest accommodation, with a sophisticated palette of warm tones. Sumptuous textiles, inspired by the iconography of the Byzantine Empire, have been exclusively designed for the Retreat. Each guest room is fully equipped with the latest technology, including subtle lighting, bio climatisation, underfloor heating, and home automation systems. Each room has its own distinctive character, respecting the zen and calming atmosphere of the place, featuring wooden furniture, marble bathrooms and an intelligent layout for complete relaxation. www.euphoriaretreat.com

Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden Palma de Mallorca, Spain Contemporary design meets old world charm in this OHLAB-designed hotel in Palma’s Old Quarter.
C an Bordoy may be set in the natural splendour of one of the largest private gardens in central Palma, but it is delightfully unassuming and understated in feel. The 16th century property was once one of Palma’s most important buildings, housing a kindergarten run by the Catholic religious order of Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, and has undergone many refurbishments and iterations since. Following a four-year renovation, its serene and welcoming atmosphere remains, but with significantly modernised interiors by design studio, OHLAB. The house now offers 24 characterful suites, a library, restaurant and spa, alongside plentiful outdoor facilities in its splendid grounds. OHLAB’s Paloma Hernaiz and Jaime Oliver were inspired by the concept of ‘kintsugi’ – the Japanese method for repairing broken ceramics with gold, silver, or platinum – in their careful renovation of the property.

Adorned with wooden beams, antique frescoes, gothic relics, marble tiling and baroque mirrors, the building’s history and heritage are still present, but OHLAB’s additions are equally and honestly highlighted, too. Indeed, much of the inspiration for the refreshed interiors roots from the property’s beautiful private garden. Measuring over 750m², the grounds feature more than 70 plant species, including a diverse array of WildOlive, Jacaranda and fruit trees. An enormous Lledoner, or European Hackberry tree, holds special significance as a recognised symbol of welcome in Mallorcan houses. When guests first arrive, they are greeted by a leafy, tranquil courtyard. This botanical splendour continues inside the property, where greenery trails across the walls and ceilings to create an organic, almost enchanted feel. Can Bordoy’s aptly-named restaurant, ‘Botànic’, serves up organic, Mediterranean cuisine by Chef Andrés Beníte. Featuring a soft, soothing colour palette, Botànic offers 89 seats, with the option of both indoor and al fresco dining.

This light, airy feel is mirrored in the guest accommodation, where the school’s former classrooms now hold a luxurious range of Traveller, Junior, Deluxe, Premium and Grand Suites. Each guest room has been individually designed, with elegant art deco-inspired furnishings, a soothing ultra-marine colour palette and dramatic ceiling-height velvet curtains to divide the room. Some feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows with wonderful views over the garden, whilst others have wooden beam ceilings, TVs artfully screened behind period mirrors, private
terraces or large freestanding bath tubs in marble bathrooms. Original design elements, such as the twotone floor tiles that decorate the corridors, blown glass windows, wooden doors and parquet have been restored wherever possible, and replicated where not. Such was OHLAB’s dedication to maintaining the property’s history, that even the smallest of restoration details – such as the screws used in the windows and doors – emulate those used in bygone eras. Much of the avant garde furniture and artwork within the accommodation and throughout the hotel has been sourced from
antique shops and auctions throughout the world, while other items – the elaborate tapestries in the suites, for example – have been made exclusively for the hotel. Completing Can Bordoy’s impressive offering is a subterranean spa, featuring two treatment rooms, a plunge pool with water jets, changing rooms and relaxation areas. In a perfect example of ‘kintsugi’, remarkable sections of the spa’s authentic 12th century stone walls are complemented by the addition of exposed concrete and delicate natural finishes. www.canbordoy.com www.ohlab.net/en/

VIVI Centre Point, London Oxford Street’s Grade II Listed luxury complex, Centre Point, recently welcomed VIVI Restaurant & Bar to its premium offering.
N ew from rhubarb, the hospitality group behind Sky Garden, VIVI is a stylish all-day dining destination offering a seasonal menu of 60s-inspired dishes. London-based design firm, Gordon Young Architects, is responsible for the interior, and has channelled the heritage of the Centre Point building in its retro palette and styling. The venue is divided into four slick zones – The Dining Room, The Gallery, The Liquid Lounge and The Bar. Soft gold finishes, optical artwork and upholstery in rich teal blue and delicate blush pink tones bring texture and vibrant colour throughout. Celebrating the playfulness of the 60s’ era, a bespoke statement chandelier suspended over The Dining Room acts as a key focal point. Designed and hand-built by Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt specifically for the space, the plexiglass chandelier – adorned with brass fittings – mimics the popular 60s’ children’s construction toy, ‘PlayPlax’, and draws inspiration from 1960s’ Italian design, French Art Nouveau and German Bauhaus modernism.

Elegant bespoke seating units by Noble Russell sit neatly on plinths finished in a bronze powder coat, blending American black walnut – stained to match the 60s’ period timber within the dining area – with Alcantara fabric upholstery and polished brass tops and arm details. Another stand-out design feature is a glamorous elliptical bar, bedecked with plated bronze Harper tiles by Giles Miller. The bar has been custom built to catch the light which floods in through the restaurant’s floor-toceiling windows by day, while subtle reflective spotlights create an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere during the evening. The Liquid Lounge, too, offers a seamless transition from day to night. Opening at 8am with an offering of coffee, fresh juices, smoothies, shakes and superfood shots, it becomes a casual lunchtime spot and afternoon destination, before transforming into a stylish cocktail spot by dusk.

Andy Thornton specified for Chapter One Restaurant Chapter One Restaurant near Bromley in Kent is firmly established as one of the country’s top destination restaurants, headed for nearly 20 years by chef and managing partner Andrew McLeish. It provides a first-class dining experience with an impressive modern European menu and extensive wine list. Chapter One has recently undergone a complete refurbishment, with interior design by Sherliker Design of London, which specified the contract dining furniture from Andy Thornton. The client’s design brief was simple – to reinvigorate the existing restaurant and design a new brasserie and outdoor terrace. As the
Next to the main restaurant, the relaxed and stylish new Chapter One Brasserie offers accessible, informal dining with a simple menu to satisfy any diner. Here, Andy Thornton supplied fluted-back banquette seating in a striking petrol-blue faux leather, with Tonda tables and Louvre dining chairs in an emerald velvet. For the bar, the Andy Thornton metalwork department fabricated a radiused L-shaped decorative, ceiling-mounted storage rack for wine and champagne glasses. This solid brass structure was finished in antique brass and incorporated toughened glass shelves.
restaurant was previously known as The Fantail, the designer drew inspiration from the colours of a peacock’s tail feathers, particularly the dense greens and navy blues. For the main restaurant, Andy Thornton supplied over 100 elegant Amelia side chairs, upholstered in a sumptuous deep blue velvet. These blend perfectly with the turquoise painted dado panelling and specially commissioned peacock stained glass screens.
Adjacent to the bar, Andy Thornton supplied the poseur tables with Pariso bar stools, upholstered in teal coloured velvet. The company also created an ornate solid brass fretwork screen incorporating the Chapter One logo, which leads into the brasserie dining area. Armourcoat on the menu for new Centre Point restaurant Surface finish specialist Armourcoat has been specified throughout VIVI restaurant and bar – a new 1960s-inspired eatery opening in the Centre Point Building in London’s West End. The interior design of VIVI’s 290-cover dining room is inspired by 1960s colours and fabrics, including a handmade chandelier by Danish designer Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt. The new restaurant, created by rhubarb – the team behind Sky Garden and Verdi Italian Kitchen at the Royal Albert Hall, is part of a wider refurbishment of Richard Seifert’s
celebrated Grade II listed high-rise tower. Armourcoat finishes have been used to spectacular effect in the entrance lobby, restaurant reception, bar and dining area, with close to 300m² of hand-finished polished plaster applied to the walls. In addition, 240m² of Armourcoat’s new acoustic plaster system has been installed to the ceilings in the main dining room. Designed to optimise the acoustics of interior spaces, the Armourcoat Acoustic plaster system offers a clean and smooth mineral surface that can be applied
seamlessly over large expanses to both flat and curved surfaces. Comprising a special mineral wool composite panel that is bonded onto the substrate and finished with a seamless layer, the system presents an elegant marblebased plaster finish while allowing sound energy to pass through the surface. The system was recently granted the Quiet Mark Award – the international mark of approval from the Noise Abatement Society Charitable Foundation. www.armourcoat.com

HI-MACS® used to striking effect in Lake Garda property “The owners wanted something different, with an appealing and design-led finish, which meant we immediately knew HI-MACS® was the perfect choice of material.” explains Karl Dreer, managing director of Dreer-Graf GmbH, and an expert when it comes to the processing of solid surface materials. “In fact, the owners themselves even call it ‘The HI-MACS® House’, for a good reason. As well as the fabulous swimming pool area, the floors, much of the furniture and kitchen and bathroom elements are all made of the solid surface material.”
Dreer-Graf GmbH worked on a wide variety of patterns around the pool to give the unusual retro-look seen here. Different radii of circles, supplemented by filling pieces, result in a random pattern fabricated in HI-MACS®, using a complex milling technology. The result: pure retro-design in which the pattern runs right up to the pool, which is also enclosed in the solid surface material over its entire surface, as are the steps leading into the pool and to the outdoor shower. A complete irrigation level has been installed underneath the terrace.
Walking along the cream-coloured natural stone stairs, also designed by Dreer-Graf GmbH, you reach a small piece of lawn, surrounded by an all-glass railing, and containing a bar with a hidden refrigerator, also made of HI-MACS®. The entire outdoor area functions as a wellness area. Pool, shower and huge lounge furniture offer the perfect setting to enjoy the fantastic view to the fullest. Special focus is on the huge dining table, which is almost four metres long. With its futuristic, cantilevered shape, it is a striking centre-piece, all made possible thanks to the ability to thermoform, and seamlessly join the high-tech material. HIMACS® can be formed into virtually any shape, exactly what was required for this outdoor table. An electric teriyaki grill, enclosed in a round HI-MACS® cladding, forms the core of many cosy evenings in this architectural gem. A huge 3.40 x 4.40 metre seating area, also in the solid surface material, offers ample space for relaxing. Small side tables complete the picture. In the evening hours, the solid surface shimmers and shines in the light, its UV-, waterand weather-resistance ensuring the material is perfect for this outdoor application. 01732 897820 www.himacs.eu

Q&A
Heather McLellan, RPW Design RPW Design has applied its extensive experience in luxury hotel design to the refurbishment of two P&O cruise ships – Arcadia and Oceana. Here, RPW Design’s first associate, Heather McLellan, tells us more …
How did you come to be involved in the P&O Arcadia and Oceana projects? We were approached by P&O to look at the refurbishment of these two ships in 2017. The fact that we are primarily hotel designers, but with some cruise experience, was something that attracted them to RPW Design. The brief was to give the ships a refurb of the cabins, suites and public areas with all the same level of luxury and creative vision to deliver inviting, comfortable yet operational spaces, that have all the qualities of a high-end hotel, but with the practicalities required for a cruise ship. Could you give us a feel for the character and standout design elements of each ship? Oceana has wide open decks and guests can walk around the whole ship, something that
P&O Arcadia
makes this ship special in relation to others in their fleet. As Oceana was getting a revised destination plan, visiting new locations in the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf, particular attention was paid to enhance the outdoor decks. RPW brought a vibrant and fresh vision for the refit of Oceana to delight loyal Oceana guests while also inspiring a new generation of guests. In contrast to Oceana, Arcadia is an adultsonly cruise ship. With a different type of clientele in mind, RPW Design’s objective was to enhance the existing luxurious and more traditional qualities whilst highlighting the sense of travel and adventure.
P&O Arcadia
Locality is often such a key starting point for hotel design – what was your starting point for these projects, which by their very nature are nomadic?
It was essential to develop our design solution that focused on creating spaces with which the guests could interact throughout their journeys around the world and be surrounded by subtle references to nautical exploration. For example, the bespoke wallpaper we designed for Arcadia’s atrium features all the ship’s destinations overlaid onto a world map in diverse ways. Could you talk about how your own experiences on the ships, and interactions with guests informed the new interior schemes? Guests have a strong affiliation with the ships. Keen cruise goers are drawn to their favourite ships and know and speak about them like an old friend. Travellers are passionate and loyal to the ships that they like – something that we don’t see in the hotel side of the hospitality industry.

We therefore started by getting direct intel from the guests to understand what they felt was missing. Every time we went on board we got more of a feel for Arcadia and Oceana’s DNA. Importantly, being on board during a cruise lets you feel the mood and the buzz of what’s happening operationally and how the guests interact with the spaces. I’m sure a great deal of your experience in high-end hospitality design was transferable to this project, but do you feel there are aspects of cruise ship design that could inform our approach to hotel design in return? Having worked on a number of fast-paced cruise projects, it has taught us that through being very focused, you are able to achieve tight deadlines whilst still achieving a quality of design by creating spaces with simple yet welldetailed elements. It has also reminded us that when designing, sometimes you have to consider where the building works are taking place, work to the skills and time frame of the client and contractor to ensure that a project is delivered in time and on budget.

MOBILE HOSPITALITY
What would you say are the key challenges that are unique to cruise ship design? The main difference being that ships, unlike hotels, move constantly. This brings a whole new level of technical issues that need to be considered. Plus, there are logistical challenges as the ships are never in the same place, which makes site visits and planning more complicated. There are also a whole different set of regulations that need to be met, which means using a different mind-set when detailing and using a different library of material selections to meet the fire regulations, vibration and weight restrictions. What aspects of the projects did you find most rewarding? Unlike hotel refurbishment where programmes can slip, the fact that most ship refurbs are scheduled with very tight dock times and sail dates are set in stone, means all teams have to be focused on the job in hand. This also brings a sense of achievement where we have to overcome technical challenges and see the designs come to life is a very short space of time. What do you feel the future has in store for cruise ship design? Cruising is an expanding industry attracting younger clients, and with it ship design is becoming more sophisticated. Guests are becoming more travel and technologically savvy and have the exposure to high end designs from the hotel industry. Cruise operators need to keep up to date with the demands of these new generations of clients. www.rpwdesign.co.uk

Belmond Andean Explorer Peru What better way to illustrate the escapist indulgence of train travel than with South America’s first luxury sleeper train. Explore Muza Lab’s striking design for the Belmond Andean Explorer below.
S outh America’s first luxury sleeper train, Belmond Andean Explorer in Peru, launched on rails in May 2017. Its handsome interiors were conceived by Muza Lab – a highly specialised studio founded by Inge Moore and Nathan Hutchins – and draw from the spectacular vistas along its routes. “We design journeys,” explains Inge Moore, “and with Belmond Andean Explorer, we have distilled the romance, nostalgia and freedom of the train voyage. “The train is a place of transition where time seems to slow down between the departure and the arrival. Our vision was to design somewhere to ponder and dream, a space where the beauty of the land can infuse the soul.” The train was formerly the Great South Pacific Express and while select nostalgic elements from its original form have been restored, the 16 carriages have benefited from extensive refurbishment to create the refined, pared-back aesthetic suited to the modern traveller.

“Our vision was to design somewhere to ponder and dream, a space where the beauty of the land can infuse the soul”
The original exterior palette of maroon and ivory has been updated to a glossy blue livery, in a nod to Belmond’s partnership with PeruRail, whose day train locomotives are also a vibrant blue. Inside, beautifully-crafted furnishings reference Peru’s heritage and natural bounty to create a welcoming, honest feel. From the timber floors and linen roman blinds, to colourful woven textiles, almost everything has been locally sourced. The sleeper cabins accommodate up to 48 passengers, and have been designed with all the sumptuous amenities guests might expect. Each sleeper car is named after Peruvian flora and fauna and – whether it contains double, twin or bunk beds – has been individually designed as a spacious suite. Timber wall panels have been painted in parchment tones, while linen-look wallcoverings give the ceilings a tailored look.
Neutral carpets have been introduced, while the seating has been covered in sumptuous fabric and leather. Muza has considered even the smallest of details, such as timeless brass room keys forged into the shape of the Chakana Cross – one of the most enduring shamanic symbols of Incan civilisation and the train’s official crest. With its outdoor deck complete with scrolled balcony rails, the Observation Car offers guests the chance to immerse themselves in 360° views of the vibrant landscape. Inside, guests can enjoy a drink from the bar and unwind on cosy sofas. Decorative cushions upholstered in tapestry patterns woven in different regions of Peru are offset by the deep teal of ceramic table lamps. Embossed leather chairs with nail heads affixed to chunky timber frames inject a spirit of traditional craft and a casual, laid-back style.

The Piano Bar Car, meanwhile, offers a vibrant social hub with a more formal ambience. A sophisticated palette of grey tweed on the sofas and lounge chairs here is brought to life by splashes of cornflower blue and golden yellow in the cushion fringe, lampshades and delicate paintings. Moving through to the Dining cars, the atmosphere transitions from the more casual feel of the breakfast service to a refined, fine dining ambience for the evening meal. Pale shades of taupé and cream enhance the cars’ open spaciousness, while divider screens between seating groups are refreshed with white macramé that replaced inset timber panels. Rich, cognac-toned leather chairs bring a substantial feel that is complemented by the fine leather trim added to the millwork.
The train’s luxurious offering is completed by its Picaflor Spa, which offers three treatment rooms. “Our spa design encourages deep relaxation by tapping into the train journey’s dreamlike sense of suspended time,” Inge explains. “A soothing shade of white on the streamlined car panels helps create a moment of stillness as the colourful landscape whirrs by, inspiring guests to internalise the beauty outside as the therapists work their magic. “The design is both poetic and practical, with treatment beds securely affixed to the floor due to the train’s movements. Small, locally-made sunburst mirrors bring sparkle as passengers emerge refreshed and energised.” www.belmond.com www.muzalab.com

Celebrity Cruises introduces cutting-edge new ship Celebrity Edge is the first in Celebrity Cruises’ cutting-edge new class of ships, and marks a significant turning point in its approach. From initial sketches, to experiencing the designs in a virtual reality setting, each and every aspect of Celebrity Edge has been created, reviewed and finetuned in 3D. The ship’s refined, outward-facing design has been conceived in collaboration with a team of world-class designers – including Kelly Hoppen MBE and Tom Wright of WKK – and stems from a desire to make the destination experience more immersive for guests. This focus is evident throughout the ship’s extensive accommodation options, but in particular within its 918 ‘Edge Staterooms with Infinite Verandas’. These revolutionary rooms blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors so that the entire living space becomes the veranda, letting guests walk right out to the water’s edge. Within the new Edge-exclusive Iconic Suite, meanwhile, 82 linear feet of panoramic glass envelops the sprawling dining room, living room and bedroom to create the most breathtaking vista. A veranda, which adds 700ft² to the grand total space of the suite, features a hot tub, a shaded private, resortstyle cabana, and sweeping views of the ocean. Handcrafted cashmere mattresses, sophisticated in-room technology, bespoke lighting from Chelsom and plentiful storage space combine with a contemporary, harmonious palette throughout the accommodation – capturing Kelly Hoppen’s
flair for clean lines and sumptuous opulence. Celebrity Edge’s wealth of warm, inviting public spaces are an extension of this chic scheme, from The Retreat Sundeck with its plush stylish furniture, full-sized pool and hot tub, to the adults-only Solarium, a covered pool area with a cafe and juice bar. Tom Wright of WKK has applied his wealth of experience – including five years spent as design director for the Jumeirah Beach Resort Development – to create a series of serene, outward-facing sanctuaries that showcase endless ocean views and the extraordinary places the brand visits. The Resort Deck is perhaps the centrepiece of these spaces, incorporating the main pool area, rooftop garden, jogging track, Solarium and more. Revolutionary in its vision, the space is encompassed by an outward-facing, untraditionally asymmetrical terraced pool deck nearly 22 feet high that makes the ocean views and landscapes the focal point. Shimmering at one end of the pool is a larger-than-life artistic mirror installation designed by Tom, while the pool deck is full of oversized sculptural pieces. Tom Wright was also the mastermind behind ‘the Magic Carpet’, a cantilevered venue spanning 13 stories perched on the starboard side of the ship. This spectacular space, which is the size of a tennis court, has been designed with a yacht-like, casual vibe. On Deck 16, Magic Carpet becomes the ultimate speciality restaurant, serving up a series of culinary experiences – such as ‘Dinner
on the Edge’ for a select number of guests. Down on Deck 14, it becomes an extension of the already-expansive main pool area, offering drinks and live music, while on Deck 5 it extends the ship’s restaurants into an al fresco dining space for 100 guests. On Deck 2, Magic Carpet is poised just above the ocean surface and becomes an extension of Destination Gateway – a luxury embarkation station from which guests will be whisked ashore via the newly-redefined Edge LaunchesSM. www.celebritycruises.co.uk

MOBILE HOSPITALITY
Sailing the world’s oceans on one of today’s state-of-the-art cruise ships is just as luxurious and flamboyant as it was on one of the great liners from a hundred years ago. The boundaries of marine interior design are constantly being expanded by the world’s top design practices and the scope of things to do on board surpasses most land-based hotels and resorts. It’s no wonder the whole cruise industry is booming with millions of satisfied passengers returning year after year. However, in terms of decorative products which contribute to such amazing interiors, there could hardly be a harsher environment with its pitching seas, salt air and constant motion. It takes a certain kind of design, a certain range of skills, an amount of specialist technical knowledge and a lot of commitment to successfully service such a demanding industry. Product design The interior designers who create the spectacular interiors of today’s ships are real specialists in their field. They have an overall brief to be extravagant, breath-taking, original and awe-inspiring and in the case of public areas they can work on a massive scale within the huge spaces which can sometimes transcend three or four decks. Subtle and understated are rarely the design watchwords so there is often the need for sparkle, drama and statement. The product designer must embrace these interior concepts and interpret them so that they function perfectly within the marine environment. Nothing must be allowed to sway about in rough seas, components must not vibrate, everything must be bolted down so it never falls over, weight restrictions must be considered and installation or maintenance must be as simple as possible. For cabins, space is often a driving feature so scaling down individual components whilst
“It takes a certain kind of design, a certain range of skills, an amount of specialist technical knowledge and a lot of commitment to successfully service such a demanding industry”
still maintaining perfect ambient light levels is important. Switching and dimming options are also usually essential. Team work As a specialist marine lighting supplier, we respect our role as just one of the huge teams of contractors ensuring that a cruise ship has stunning interiors with product that functions perfectly over a long period in a challenging environment. Our teamwork extends to collaborating with interior designers, lighting designers, shipyards, outfitters and cruise operators all around the world. Whereas a hotel stays where it is, there is a date on which a ship sails away and everybody in the team focuses 100% on that date which is final! Technical Some of the manufacturing and structural technicalities of marine lighting are testing to say the least, but lighting technology itself plays an ever-increasing role in cruise interiors. Energy-saving light sources are of course mandatory but colour rendering, colour changing, easily controlled dimming and remote switching are all increasingly important and indeed successful. Mostly it’s about creating the most luxurious and inviting ambience but it’s also about ease of lighting control and ease of maintenance. We work as part of the team of marine experts
to bring all the lighting requirements to fruition. Installation There can be literally thousands of contractors on a ship at any one time when it is in build. Every one of them is working diligently to complete their own task whilst co-operating with all those around them so nothing gets in the way or delays some other part of the process. We have our own specialist and qualified marine installation team who will be on board at the right time to take delivery of our lighting products, assemble on site, install and commission. This on-board presence not only allows successful installation but also allows any last minute adjustment or changes which can occur due to the sheer scale and complexity of the working environment. Chelsom is a 70-year old company with vast experience in the cruise ship sector. Our knowledge of and close relationship with the industry’s specialist interior design practices, shipyards and operators gives us the closest possible understanding of the industry’s needs. Our own in-house marine specialists in product design, manufacture and installation ensure we meet those needs. We feel proud to be one of the world’s leading manufacturers of marine lighting today. 01253 831404 www.Chelsom.co.uk

Nestled in a secluded bay on the south central coastline of Vietnam, newly-opened resort, Anantara Quy Nhon Villas, blends sympathetically with its surrounds. Its contemporary form incorporates locallysourced, often handcrafted materials, such as the timber used for the sundecks and a widespread use of Vietnamese blue stone through the communal areas. Besides the resort’s 26 ocean-facing villas, signature restaurant and swim-up bar, its Anantara Spa is a true highlight. Perched high on the hillside overlooking Quy Nhon Bay, it forms a true wellbeing paradise amongst the tropical foliage. Nature-inspired treatment suites, positioned among the trees, boast double massage beds and oversized bath tubs, while breezy cliffside pavilions immerse guests in the serene landscape. Guests also have the option to book private sessions with alternative therapists, take private meditation sessions accompanied by a local monk, or enjoy a morning yoga experience at the Cham towers. www.anantara.com/en/quy-nhon

The spa offers 14 treatment rooms, including a new spacious Oriental Suite with two massage beds and a Rasul water temple. The invisible environment in hospitality Based in Bedfordshire, 361 Degrees has designed and installed air conditioning, heating and ventilation (HVAC) systems in buildings of all sizes and functions. Here, the brand’s director of marketing and business development, Lewis English, explains why it is so important that good hospitality design should factor in “the invisible environment” in order to improve guest wellness.
Good building design is about much more than the aesthetics, it helps to create spaces that fuel innovation, creativity and productivity. At initial design stage, focus is often placed on the physical aspects of a space, such as decor, lighting and furniture, especially in the hospitality industry, where appearance is paramount, however quite often the ‘Invisible Environment’ is forgotten. The Invisible Environment incorporates all the aspects of a space that we can’t see: air quality, thermal comfort, humidity and ventilation to name a few. These things can play a huge part in our overall health, happiness and productivity, so should be front of mind throughout the design process. Wellness in hospitality is not a new concept, in fact, it’s something designers have been focused on for many years. However, shifts are being made to take wellness from being simply a consideration, to a key design factor and designers in the industry are undertaking some impressive work to ensure that all aspects of wellness are taken into
account. As well as considering how a space looks, designers are starting to consider more about how the space feels, in an effort to make employees and visitors alike, happier and feel more valued, which results in higher productivity, better overall experiences and a higher propensity to return. But if the people occupying these spaces breathe dirty air, if they complain about the heat or the cold, if they suffer from headaches, nausea or fatigue, the aesthetic design features go to waste. Studies show that most people’s ‘happy places’ are outdoors, surrounded by fresh air, in wide, open spaces. However, in reality, we spend around 90% of our time indoors. According to a study conducted by hotel chain, Point a Hotels, the average person spends 10 months of their adult life asleep in a hotel room. And with a 2012 survey conducted by Expedia finding that more than 60% of consumers will give better ratings to hotels with high indoor air quality and
robust sustainability efforts, shouldn’t we be doing more to bring fresh air into our indoor environments? This said, it’s time to take a more holistic approach to the design of our buildings. Certifications such as the WELL Building Standard from the International WELL Building Institute provide a framework for addressing a range of factors, including air quality. Each of these factors can provide a marginal gain, which can result in a significant improvement in the overall environment. Alongside being found to reduce mistakes by 44%, ‘green’ certified buildings that address aspects such as thermal comfort, lighting and air quality, have improved productivity by as much as 8%. The impact of the air we breathe on our health, happiness, productivity, relationships and morale is too great to ignore. By keeping our happy places at the forefront of our minds during the design process, we can change the ‘Invisible Environment’, for the better. www.361degrees.co.uk

OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Those seeking high quality, design-led outdoor furnishing solutions for hospitality spaces need look no further than Leisure Plan . . .
From chic statement pieces to classic styles, Leisure Plan is the eminent UK supplier of three of the world’s highest quality outdoor brands – Dedon, Fischer Möbel and EGO Paris. The business, which was founded in the 1980s by Chris McCormack, has become an invaluable resource for the A&D market, offering inspirational solutions for the hospitality, marine and high-end residential sectors. Its headquarters can be found in a converted 19th Century chapel in the quaint Essex village of Stansted Mountfitchet. Situated just a matter of minutes from the M11 and Stansted Airport, this impressive facility allows clients to explore and truly experience the full breadth of its offering. Premium product and originality of design have always been front and centre of Leisure Plan’s philosophy, and it is these integral values that Chris seeks from his industry partners. Fischer Möbel was the first of these partnerships, some 35 years ago. Founded in 1984, the Stuttgart-based business is widely recognised for its outstanding design and engineering. Its portfolio, which spans

customisable lounge collections to functional furniture for dining areas, has built an enviable reputation for its quality and reliability. Next to join Leisure Plan’s formidable triumvirate of brands was DEDON, with whom it has been collaborating for 20 years. The brand is acclaimed for its pioneering collections of high-end woven furniture, which grace al fresco dining areas, hotel poolsides and terraces across the globe. Priding itself on great craftsmanship, DEDON collaborates with some of the industry’s most prestigious design names. Just last year, the brand released TIBBO – a sustainably sourced teak collection – in partnership with Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, as well as Jean-Marie Massaud’s contemporary SEAYOU deck chair
and the joyfully unconventional MBRACE furniture range from Sebastian Herkner. Last but by no means least is EGO Paris – a world-renowned brand which Leisure Plan jointly founded more than 16 years ago. EGO Paris is truly French – full of flair, flavour and flourish. Amongst its standout designs are the TANDEM Sunlounger – designed by Thomas Sauvage and winner of the prestigious Red Dot Design Award – as well as a colourful range of Beach Nested Cabins, designed by Dorothée Noirbent, which artully reimagine the traditional beach house concept as an item of outdoor furniture. Another attribute of the business, and one that Chris places a great deal of emphasis on,
is its service ethos. When an order is placed, Leisure Plan manages the whole delivery process, from its own transport, to unpacking, assembling and removing packaging. The company’s extensive first-class warehouse – located in Bishop’s Stortford – means that almost all its products are stocked here in the UK, year-round, allowing Leisure Plan to work in a realtime scenario. And, for that extra level of individuality, Leisure Plan’s on-site cushion workshop offers clients a bespoke production service, supported by an extensive portfolio of fabrics, colours and styles, including customers’ own material. 01279 816 001 www.leisureplan.co.uk

Barlow Tyrie has introduced a series of new products and reinvigorated designs that sit perfectly with its existing ranges. Created by the brand’s design team, the new additions are designed for both contemporary and traditional palettes. The Layout collection, for example, is a modular deep seating system which brings elegant indoor lounging to outdoor spaces. The collection is comprised of two upholstered seat sizes and seven tables which together create intimate or grand seating environments.

Clients can create and configure their own individual system according to their outdoor living requirements. Upholstered backs and arms are available as separate components, using the best Sunbrella® Rain® waterproof fabrics that the outdoor industry has to offer. These can be attached on any side of the seats to create sofas, corner sectional, loungers, chairs, and many asymmetrical configurations. Refined frames support both the upholstered seats and a choice of teak or terrazzo table tops. Layout is a creative kit of parts to build clients’ perfect outdoor living room.
The Woodland Screen collection, meanwhile, is a companion design to the Layout Collection and can be used to create greater intimacy and enclosure for seating configurations. The light, random pattern of the teak slats, their soft edges and the pebble-like feet were inspired by nature and create an atmosphere of quiet sophistication. The designs are available in two sizes – landscape, at h. 133 x w. 228cm and portrait, at h. 178cm x w. 122cm. info@teak.com www.teak.com

Create an elegant interior with Renolit A traditional kitchen is one of the most popular and versatile style concepts, incorporating warm colours and symmetrical lines that evoke comfort and elegance. A modern contemporary take on this aesthetic combines new fresh woodgrain designs with plain colours in matt or supermatt textured surfaces. In order to keep an installation current, connect up-to-date decors with the latest trend of solid colour doors. Oak remains a firm favourite in this genre, with RENOLIT ALKOREN Kendal Oak offering subtle details and uniformity of colour. A gentle linear structure flows around attractivelyproportioned swirling knots. The surface has a light distribution of linear pores, giving it a natural look with a velvety, pleasant touch. An alternative contender, and a break from the norm, is the up and coming Rockford
Hickory. One the latest new decors on offer in RENOLIT’s stock range, it is robust and versatile. This sophisticated design is created by light pores and contrasting cathedrals. Complement with the subtle tone of Stone Grey Supermatt and a fresh forest green to create a traditional effect with modern appeal. A more recent development of a traditional kitchen is the appearance of painted-look, woodgrain-textured single colour doors that give a modern twist to kitchen design. A painted timber look, such as RENOLIT’s 3D thermoformable Modern Ash, is particularly suited to present-day new build properties where the owner desires the quality and design statement associated with a traditional kitchen but in a smaller space where a full woodgrain décor may be domineering. Modern Ash is a deep, visual ash-
structured surface emboss which creates a contemporary painted timber finish. This style fits well with a variety of 5-piece or routered door styles. The Modern Ash emboss matches Egger’s ST27 and RENOLIT offers a wide spectrum of seven colours. The dramatic dark colour of Onyx Grey provides a statement to any room. Needing little to lift the effect further, it can be easily combined with a variety of colours. At the other end of the spectrum, the soft light tone of White Grey Modern Ash provides an ideal backdrop which can be enriched with bolder woodgrain designs such as Inedito 1 SC, or by adding warm metallic Rose Gold to provide a bright and cheerful atmosphere. Armac Martin mixes it up with new industrial collection Armac Martin, a leading UK brass hardware manufacturer, has launched a new industrial collection to mark its 90th year in business. The MIX is a bold, contemporary range of hardware designed and manufactured by Armac Martin, but in an innovative twist, the product is “mixed” by the consumer. With its engaging strapline, ‘Made by us, mixed by you’, consumers can MIX their own version of the collection, choosing between plain, diamond knurled or straight machined versions of the knob and finials, with either a Matt Black, Satin Nickel or Satin Brass finish mixed between the knob, finials and the backplate. Moving away from its traditional designs, the new Armac Martin MIX collection offers a bold alternative, ideal for contemporary and modern interiors. Commercial director, Richard McGrail explains: “To mark our 90th year in business, we wanted to design and manufacture a
product range with a twist. The MIX is an exciting, bold and innovative collection that would particularly complement the contemporary and industrial look. The collection still boasts the same quality that is aligned with the Armac Martin brand, but offers a new, vibrant and potentially unexpected design that we are confident many of our customers will love.” Founded in 1929, Armac Martin is a familyrun business, which has become a household name in luxury cabinet hardware. Exporting all across the world, the innovative firm has experienced significant growth over the past five years, and now offers over 40 different collections, available in 21 expert finishes. Elegance and functionality combine Door closers have not traditionally been built for elegance. From overhead arms to floor-mounted springs, their design reflects a practical purpose – to keep fire and security doors closed, to counter draughts and to conserve heat inside buildings. Sadly, improving safety, security and energy efficiency by ensuring interior doors always close, has had to come at the cost of visual appeal. Adding a large, conspicuous overhead arm to a carefully-chosen door and frame detracts from the aesthetic effect. Drawing on its wealth of expertise in door closure technology, Japanese component manufacturer, Sugatsune, has come up with an answer. With its LDD range, the company has pioneered what it calls ‘soft close door dampers’ as an alternative to door closers, incorporating precision control into tasteful, discrete designs. Unlike door closers, dampers do not control the motion of a door throughout its opening and closing arc. Instead, Sugatsune’s LDD
door dampers make use of a catch system, connecting 5o to 15o from closure. This is not intended to force doors closed, but instead guarantees a smooth, controlled finish. Aesthetically, the late catch point means dampers can be much smaller than standard door closers. The Sugatsune LDD-S surface mount damper is just 200mm high and sits neatly on the frame of any door – useful if the door is too thin for a concealed system. Speaking of which, the LDD-V concealed version is mounted into the frame itself so is not visible at all when the door is shut. The catch itself means the door remains closed without the need for a handle-operated latch, freeing designers to experiment with smaller handles or even no handle at all. One of the advantages of these more compact, inconspicuous solutions is that they make impeccably smooth close control available to every type of interior door, not just fire doors and security doors. Yet despite their diminutive size, soft close dampers can also be
deployed on the heaviest of doors – the awardwinning LDD-V100 can cope with examples weighing up to 100kg. Always keen to drive innovation, Sugatsune has now extended the soft close damper concept to wardrobe, cupboard and large cabinet doors. The DC-200 model applies late close control to wardrobe doors anything up to 3m in height and weighing as much as 40kg, ideal for the type of heavy duty cabinets and walk-in closets found in hotels. Unlike the LDD-S, the DC-200 is mounted on the interior of the cabinet with a catch fitted to the inside of the panel, controlling the motion so the door comes to a smooth, soft finish and holding it closed on a latch. Sugatsune has proven that elegance and functionality do not have to be mutually exclusive; with Sugatsune dampers, every door can benefit from a perfectly controlled close without any visual intrusions. www.sugatsune.co.uk

The surface with a wow factor James Latham is now offering SERICA, the latest addition to its exclusive, inspirational collection of AE Core decors. AE Core is the innovative thermoplastic laminate, an alternative to conventional decorative materials which has been created specifically for the world of architecture and design. AE Core’s flexibility means that it is easy to cut and will flex and form curves with very little resistance, plus, it can be post formed without specialist machinery. Designed and manufactured in Italy by Alfatherm, the SERICA surface offers a warm, silky finish giving a real “WOW” effect both to the touch and the eye. The on-trend, contemporary colour palette incorporates solid colour right through to the core, so there are no unsightly joint lines and as well as being extremely durable, it is also water resistant and flame retardant.
Encompassing both anti-scratch and thermal healing technology, this super-matt, low-light reflectivity material is also antifingerprint and in the case of micro-scratches, SERICA can be easily repaired by simply using an iron or hair dryer to renovate the surface. (see the SERICA video at www.lathams.co.uk ) Because of the thermoformability of its polymeric foils, SERICA offers greater freedom of design, both in terms of surfaces – colour and printed decoration – as well as in a three-dimensional sense. Alongside the SERICA collection, the stock range also includes woodgrain finishes featuring Alfatherm’s pioneering and innovative EIR (Embossed-in-register) technology. This brings a reproduction closer
to the look and feel of “real wood”, making them a perfect solution for kitchen doors and draw fronts, bathroom furniture, bedroom doors, living room furniture and even passage doors. Designed to cover all types of furnishings in the home, office and retail environments, it is also an excellent choice for exhibition contractors, plus the hospitality and healthcare sectors where a tougher surface material is often required. The AE Core portfolio consists of 22 stock decors, 18 of which are in the SERICA surface finish, in a sheet size of 3050mm x 1300mm x 0.8mm. 0116 257 3415 www.lathamtimber.co.uk

Fractured Earth collection Wilton Carpets “I’ve looked towards the threat to earth’s precious balance, examining the remarkable patterns drawn by land, sea and air,” explains designer Kath Swift on the creation of the Fractured Earth collection by Wilton Carpets. “From the cracked crusts of sun-baked riverbeds and the crests of rushing tides, to swirling, gathering storm clouds, cracking ice in the meltdown of polar summers and the leaf-bare nakedness of autumn branches; this is a collection with a close connection to nature.” In combinations of slate grey and ocean blue to lava red and desert sand, these designs have a wonderful abstract effect that will empower the interiors of hospitality and leisure locations with a striking base for interior schemes. As part of the Design Collection by Wilton Carpets, Fractured Earth can be chosen in any of the prescribed colourways, or work as the perfect muse for a design recoloured through the Wiltshire-based manufacturer’s Ready to Weave woven axminster service. Designed and made in Britain, each Fractured Earth carpet is crafted in a high-quality, wool-rich blend and can be specified in any woven axminster carpet. www.wiltoncarpets.com

Cork wall tiles Granorte
Designed by famed interior designer, Marco Carini, Bebop is a brand-new design in Granorte’s 3D Forms cork wall tile collection. Using an imposing black agglomerated cork, Bebop is certainly a statement wall finish, designed to work in combination across two panel sizes and three different thicknesses. Mixing between the combinations catches the light, causing shadows and highlights that add an extra dimension to its striking finish. With Corkguard® water-based protection from water and stains for an easy to maintain finish, Bebop is not only attractive but functional too. Using cork’s excellent acoustic
and thermal benefits, Bebop is an enduring wall tile that is natural, renewable and sustainable. Granorte uses waste cork from the wine stopper industry to make the 3D Forms collection. Instagrammable interiors UNILIN, division panels
A recent British survey suggests that more than 40% of millennials choose their holiday destination based on its Instragammability. To discover how hotel interiors can be more instagrammable, UNILIN, division panels, turned to Kel Wouters of social media marketing agency, So Buzzy. “Instagram can give your hotel additional awareness and reach, and often just a small investment can have a major impact,” begins Kel. “Check what your audience is sharing and looking at on Instagram and respond to that when designing your spot. If guests are sharing your selfie spot but no one knows that it’s in your hotel, then
it’s a wasted opportunity; share your account at the location and encourage people to use a hashtag.” Designers can use UNILIN Evola panels to maximise the effects of these instagram hotspots, selecting from 168 designs to create the perfect backdrop to a ‘grammable’ slogan, or even creating a unique ‘selfie spot’ with custom digital print technology available on UNILIN’s HPL, melamine and edging tape. UNILIN can also offer designers a flexible way to approach the entire fabric of their Instagram spot – walls, partitions, furniture and surface treatment – with different looks that all possess the same low-maintenance, splash-proof, scratch-resistant, fade-resistant and durable finish. www.unilinpanels.com

UNILIN Evola UNILIN
Every UNILIN Evola design starts with an original surface, from which begins an intensive process of design development. Using the original sample, UNILIN’s design and R&D teams begin to work together to create a surface that’s as close to the ‘real thing’ as possible, examining every detail and translating this into an easy to maintain surface that outperforms the original in many ways. “If you want real wood, you’ll always choose the original example,” explains Ann De Blanck, product manager, UNILIN. “If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly alternative with lasting looks and real-world performance, then you’ll turn to UNILIN Evola.
“Easier to look after and far more resistant to scratches and UV light, all of our decors are designed with one ultimate goal in mind – if you put our end product next to the real thing, then you won’t be able to see a difference.” With 168 decors available in UNILIN Evola, variation is also a key ingredient in the development mix. By treating the original materials, adding saw cuts or patina to the original for example, UNILIN is able to achieve a unique variety. The process is always one of skill with a fine-line being tread between attractively authentic and hopelessly overdone. www.unilinpanels.com

CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK 2019 will mark CDW’s tenth edition, with plans in place for a remarkable programme of installations, talks, features and design excellence befitting this landmark year.
21st - 23rd May 2019 Clerkenwell, London, UK www.clerkenwelldesignweek.com From its inception, Clerkenwell Design Week was intended as a celebration of London’s leading design district; of its dense design community and its rich culture, architecture and history. Over the past decade, the festival has grown organically, incorporating new elements, local and international design names, and attracting an ever-increasing audience. These roots remain unchanged this year, with a series of fascinating installations created with the help of local businesses and young and established design talent. One such installation, entitled “Once Upon a Time” will see CDW and its tour guide partner, Lansdown’s
Once Upon A Time
Solus
London, collaborate with BA Graphic Design Communication students at Chelsea College of Arts to create a series of graphic installations inspired by Clerkenwell’s history. CDW will also present Decade – a dramatic trail of 10, three-metre-high candle-like beacons in celebration of its anniversary. Individually designed by an assortment of industry pioneers, the installations will also form part of CDW’s wayfinding strategy. Another key highlight of CDW is its talk schedule, which will take place in a mothinspired pavilion designed by architect, Pereen d’Avoine from Russian for Fish. Pereen’s design incorporates a vast canopy of recycled fabric, which will evoke the wings of a moth hovering over Spa Fields Park. Conversations at Clerkenwell will include a workplace panel with Sebastian Wrong and Erwan Bouroullec; an exploration of New London Architecture’s recent work for an ongoing public housing project and an OnOffice-hosted panel session with designinnovators making a difference to wellness in the workplace. As always, there will be a plethora of pop-up showrooms and workspaces at the festival. Established & Sons will take up residency in Fora to lanch three new designs, inviting visitors to try them out with free hot-desking WiFi and refreshments from Fora’s in-

Terra Tones 206V XYZ
A pleasant stay Mosa.
Hospitality forms the building blocks for hotels, cafĂŠs, and restaurants. A pleasant stay is influenced by the interior: a prominent carrier of warmth, comfort, and atmosphere. The interior starts with large surface areas. The tone is set by means of walls and floors. It is important in lobbies, bathrooms, and kitchens that functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand. Mosa offers tile concepts that include both. Whichever element is more important, Mosa has timeless tile designs to suit the space. SURFACE DESIGN SHOW The 2019 edition of Surface Design Show gave a platform to more surface material and lighting specialists than ever before, as more than 150 exhibitors from across Europe put their surface, material and lighting products before 5200 architects, designers and specifiers from 47 countries.
5-7th February 2019 Business Design Centre, London, UK www.surfacedesignshow.com One of the biggest attractions of Surface Design Show is its packed schedule of insightful and entertaining panel discussions, CPDs and talks. This year, presenters included New London Architecture and RIBA who hosted the Opening Night Debate; Chris Dyson who presented the PechaKucha Evening; Hannah Malein of Colour Hive; Oliver Heath of Oliver Heath Design and Daniel Hopwood representing Design Guild Mark.
Another yearly highlight is the Surface Design Awards. This year, there were 197 entries from 22 countries, including America, Italy, China and India. In a ceremony held over breakfast, the new Maggie’s Centre St Barts, London was declared the Supreme Winner, capturing the hearts of the stellar panel of judges.
When asked, 66% of Surface Design Show attendees said that they visit the show to discover new trends. With that in mind, and continuing a fruitful partnership with the show, trend expert Sally Angharad presented Surface Spotlight Live – a miniexhibition titled ‘One Of a Kind’ featuring a series of thought-provoking and innovative materials that go beyond aesthetics to promote meaningful experiences. Exhibits included tiles made of 90% atmospheric carbon and a terrazzo-style board made using waste woodchip. Significant trends identified by Sally include immersive colours, charred effects, weathered metals, nurturing surfaces, clay pinks and marbling techniques. New to the show this year was the New Talent area, curated by chief creative director of Trendease International, Jennifer Castoldi. The exhibit featured innovative exhibitors such as Enis Kiev, whose plastic tiles are made from postconsumer plastic, and PHEE, which turns sea grasses into organic surface materials for furniture, floors and accessories.

NATURAL STONE SHOW The Natural Stone Show provides an invaluable resource for architects, designers, developers and more to experience the extraordinarily varied palette offered by stone from around the world.
30th April - 2nd May 2019 ExCeL, London, United Kingdom www.stoneshow.co.uk Book-matched marble on walls and floors are the current must-haves for hospitality interiors, whether it’s a chic new bar, upmarket restaurant, exclusive restroom, hotel reception or high-end fitness club. Beyond the popular selection of Calacatta, Statuario or Thassos, however, is a wealth of material to spark the imagination, as the Natural Stone Show will demonstrate at London’s ExCeL from 30th April - 2nd May. While marble bathrooms are especially popular at present – especially when the stone has been used in conjunction with underfloor heating to make the most of its thermal mass– marble is not the only solution and bathrooms are not the only rooms that can benefit from stone. Limestone, sandstone, granite or slate are ideal for restaurant floors, as well as living areas, swimming pools and fitness rooms. Stone is even ideal for bridging that indoor-outdoor barrier because it can make just as fine a patio as it can a sun room floor, extending the living area into the great outdoors. There are literally thousands of different stones commercially available to choose from. And as if that were not enough diversity, the
21st century stone industry has expanded its repertoire still further by encompassing a whole new generation of engineered stone – quartz, ultra compact sintered surfaces, porcelains. Visitors will be able to see them all during a visit to ExCeL this year as the Natural Stone Show co-locates for the first time with the Hard Surfaces exhibition. The man-made products have notably introduced the super-stylish look of industrial chic – aged metals, concretes and wood – in a clean, hygienic, versatile and practical stonelike material. These are products from companies such as CRL Stone, Caesarstone, Quartzforms, Sapienstone, Ceramiche Keope, Ceramica Fondovalle, Pyro + Echo, Infinity, Nerostein and many others. As well as the exhibitors themselves, there is a feature highlighting 135 of the latest innovations, curated by MaterialDistrict, a leading match-making platform for innovative materials. These are hard surfaces at the cutting-edge that many visitors will probably never have seen before. To help the building professionals get a more complete and satisfying understanding of what can be a mind-boggling plethora of products and services on offer, the first day of the Natural Stone Show is Architects’ & Designers’
Day, hosted by international stone expert Vince Marazita from Stone Trends International. This RIBA-accredited workshop explores the conceptual advantages of stone design through a series of case studies delivered by stone consultants and architects. As well as explaining how to get the most from designing and specifying stone, there is also a guided tour of the show to highlight some of the materials and processes the industry offers and a complimentary sit-down lunch to network at. Building professionals can register at bit.ly/architectsday. There is also a seminar programme dedicated to the latest developments in tiling and hard surfaces interiors, chaired by Tile & Stone Journal’s editor and ‘Diary of a Tile Addict’ blogger Joe Simpson. These CPD presentations go under the collective heading of ‘Marrying Tradition to Innovation’, with presentations from: Mel Marquard, managing director of Grespania UK; Gary Drostle, Drostle Public Arts; James Hartwell of Vives Ceramica; Jules Archard of Domus; Jordi Gil from Rocersa; and Andreas Manero of TheSize Surfaces.
