Reconfiguring the hotel bathroom The configuration of a hotel bathroom is constantly under scrutiny, and it’s turning up some fascinating and exciting developments in the design world. From the inclusion of smart technology and spa-quality shower heads, to the development of sophisticated toilet/bidet hybrids, or sound insulation solutions for shower trays and baths, this supplement highlights the very latest from this flourishing industry. On page 8, we explore the story of Australian bathware brand, apaiser, which is taking the global hotel market by storm with its sublime sculptural designs. On page 12, we move on to a homegrown success story – William Holland. Nestled down in Dorset, this specialist copper bath and basin manufacturer has installed its lovingly-crafted designs in prestigious locales worldwide. It’s easy to speak of lofty bathroom ‘trends’, but how can they be interpreted and applied in a practical manner? We’ve teamed up with a number of industry experts to get their take. On page 17, director of Bella Bathrooms, James Chapman, talks about the growth of smart bathrooms, while John Blackburn, MD of UK wetroom solutions manufacturer, Impey, offers some helpful tips on achieving a successful wetroom specification on page 36. Finally, we’ve included the latest bathroom products and accessories to hit the market from the likes of Bette, Astro Lighting, Hansgrohe and Tutto Bagno. Enjoy!

Talented Australian entrepreneur and designer, Belinda Try, set up apaiser in 2000 to remedy the sterile, functional direction she felt bathroom products were taking. Belinda’s vision of a therapeutic, spa-like bathing experience has informed the eco-sensitive, organic forms the brand is now recognised for, and has resonated with the global hotel market in a big way. From humble beginnings, apaiser now has offices in Melbourne, Singapore, Seattle and London, as well as distribution centers in Europe, USA, Asia, UAE and Africa. As a partner to more than 500 luxury resorts, hotels and boutique properties, apaiser has an extremely impressive portfolio. Just some of its prestigious projects include The Park Hyatt in New York, the St. Regis in Aspen and Dubai, the London Edition Hotel and the Four Seasons in Sydney, New York, Toronto, Tahiti and the Maldives. At the heart of this global success is the sublime, fluid form of apaiser’s designs. The company’s unique manufacturing process means that it is able to work to almost any shape, with a uniformity of colour, strength and integrity that is unachievable in enhanced marble. This customisation capability really allows designers and architects the freedom to create unique shapes and forms to suit their scheme. For example, apaiser recently supplied 12 custommade baths to the Indigo Hotel Katong in Singapore with a striking dragon design inlaid into the bath. Working alongside elite designers is another way in which apaiser promotes the development of original and imaginative new concepts and creations. One of its most recent collaborations has been with famed designer, Kelly Hoppen >

MBE. Inspired by Kelly’s signature style of clean lines, complementary symmetry and neutral shades, the collection features a blend of distinctive curvaceous shapes and highly functional design. The Harmony design, for example, has been inspired by the shape of lotus flowers, wooden and ceramic bowls. Its soft lines and strong outer structure exude the purity and strength Kelly wished to portray. For her Origami design, Kelly wanted to create a bathtub that doubled as an art piece. Suggesting sophistication and discipline, its mesmerising lines induce a real zen-like feeling. The low environmental impact of apaiser’s bathware really enhances the organic, restorative feel to its product portfolio, and is of course a real compliment to the company’s respectful ethos. The base of each design is predominantly made up of natural marble powder – the by-product of cutting blocks and slabs in quarries – which is cleaned and mixed with similar stone byproducts and other natural materials, such as oyster shell, to create varations in colour and texture. The process of agglomerating these materials – which would otherwise have been disposed of due to their shape and size – is conducted with a very low percentage of binding material, in this case resin. Hand-finishing its products, as opposed to using mechanical sanding, also means that apaiser can reduce its carbon input, and must employ local artisans, thus creating employment opportunities within the local community. For more information on apaiser’s sustainable practices, or to see the breadth of its offering for yourself, please visit the company’s website. W apaiser.com

Despite its sleepy environs, William Holland is making waves on the global market, supplying to private residences, spas, high end boutique hotels and commercial developments in Australia, the Americas, and everywhere in between. The brand was initially set up in 2002 by Bill Murphy – a former architectural salvage director – in response to increasing demand for the elusive 19th Century French bateau baths. Realising the huge potential for striking copper baths as an obtainable alternative to these extremely rare French antique originals, Bill has effectively pioneered the copper bath industry in Britain. The appeal of William Holland baths lies not merely in their undeniably beautiful aesthetic, but in the time and talent that is invested in each individual product. Meticulously hand-finished to order by William Holland’s craftsmen in the brand’s Dorset workshops, each piece takes up to 120 hours to lovingly craft. The designs are produced from 78% recycled sources, and are deceptively light, at just 45kg. From gleaming copper through to verdigris and gold – and with the potential to select from a kaleidoscopic range of enamel interiors from the full RAL spectrum – William Holland can meet even the most demanding design vision. William Holland’s work within the hospitality sector evidences this versatility – ranging from attention-grabbing showstoppers, to subtler designs that tap into a hotel’s particular heritage or design style. Take Prague’s Emblem Hotel, for example. Set in the hotel’s signature suite, ‘The Library’, William Holland’s large freestanding copper bath stands atop a striking marble plinth >

– acting as the key focal point of the room. At the Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds, meanwhile, William Holland has created a luxurious selection of copper baths for the bathroom suites. Capturing the cosy country feel of this 15th century coaching inn, the baths nevertheless add a dash of glamour for the indulgent guest experience the hotel’s owners were after. Clients can explore and even sample William Holland’s collection, and view the many shapes and finishes offered, at the company’s showroom and offices in Dorset. T 01305 251930 W williamholland.com

Style without compromise Merlyn Showering’s marketing manager, Edel Nicholson, reveals the perfect bathroom products to meet the unique needs of the hospitality sector. Historically, choosing bathroom products for hotels and restaurants was based on the criteria of the more robust the better. Fortunately, the latest generation of products offer amazing durability with absolutely no compromise on style or functionality. Mindful of the precise needs of the hospitality industry and its ever-growing demand for the very best specifications, manufacturers are now delivering more choice, quality and value for money than ever. We have moved so far in such a short period of time. Chic and luxurious ‘hotelstyle’ bathroom design is now a highly desired look within private homes and one which interior magazines, websites and blogs are keen to explore. Yet whilst design-led products are leading the way, choosing the perfect bathroom products for the hospitality industry also has to make clear commercial sense. Longevity is key, so choosing classic styles that won’t go out of fashion is one major consideration; durability is the other. Not only are our collections exquisitely designed and expertly manufactured, at Merlyn we rigorously and meticulously test all our products for a minimum of two months. So we are assured that all our enclosures, shower walls and bath screens are safe and will truly stand the test of time. Every range also comes with the trademark Mershield Stayclear glass protection and Merlyn Lifetime Guarantee. Our bath screens are a popular hotel choice but the challenge is to ensure they are leak free. SecureSeal by Merlyn is the ultimate and guaranteed leak-free bath screen. The arm extends from the profile to create a complete seal between the bath and screen and, when not in use, it simply folds away back into the profile, making access for cleaning a dream for busy staff. The screen is crafted from 6mm glass and has a generous bath screen height of 1500mm. Additionally for wetrooms, the Merlyn 8 Series Showerwall with Swivel Panel is both stylish and functional by design. With a generous glass height of 2015mm and glass thickness of 8mm it has an optional adjustable swivel panel that will deflect shower spray. This shower enclosure is perfect in either corner or recess to maximise space. Finally, our pièce de résistance, the Arysto by Merlyn 3 Panel Sliding Door. It is the most luxurious and perfectly-crafted shower enclosure on the market. The sliding door has been engineered to float effortlessly on the Arysto AirGlyde system. With 10mm glass and a height of 2000mm this is a highly specified, high-end product that offers a true spa-like experience for luxury hotel rooms. W merlynshowering.com

ON TREND
On trend: Smart bathrooms
Director of Bella Bathrooms, James Chapman, shares his expert knowledge on the growing smart bathrooms trend that is being adopted by hotels and boutique locations across the UK … As a former plumber with a wealth of experience in the industry, James Chapman has built a bathroom brand that is now recognised across the UK, and services both trade and consumers with his luxury products. With over a decade of experience installing high-quality bathrooms that evoke the sensuality of a designer price tag, James Chapman, is fully aware of the ever-changing trends in the wet room sector.

Whether you like it or not, you cannot deny that technology is now an ingrained part of our society. Allowing us to communicate, work, rest and play all at the push of a button. In fact, you’d be hard pushed to find someone without a phone in their hand. And with a young generation being brought up with technology, it’s no surprise that technological innovations are surpassing the norm to now infiltrate our homes. Fitting around our lives with minimal effort and maximum wow factor, technology in the home has been on the increase over the past few years; because despite our initial trepidations, technology makes our lives easier. In a recent survey by Technavio it’s reported that there will be a 10% annual growth rate in the adoption of smart bathrooms; providing us with clear data that this trend won’t be fading any time soon. A Smart bathroom isn’t just about having a few cool gadgets that can do all the hard work for us; they offer better functionality, conserve energy, maintain high standards of hygiene and create a complete experience. Due to these key factors, the trend has been harnessed by the hospitality industry, who strive to provide their customers with a bathroom retreat, rather than just a functional room. Walk into many of the luxury hotels in some the UK’s biggest cities and you will find bathrooms that not only look as though they’ve been inspired by a spa, but everything about them
HI_BS_2016.indd 17

provides a user experience that only technology can offer. Digital showers that you can pre-set to your required temperature ready for when you rise, faucets that immediately turn off when they sense you’re no longer there, and fitted lighting and sound systems embedded into suites to give you a full-on sensory experience at just the click of a button. There has always been a need for function in a bathroom, but with these technological advancements, smart bathrooms can both serve as a sustainable development and as an attraction for those paying to stay away. With consumers now relying more and more on smart devices in their daily lives, these tech additions will soon become a standard expectation rather than a luxury. W bellabathrooms.co.uk

bathroom experience. GROHE toilets have a flush that gains extra cleaning power from its unique design. Instead of one water source, PowerFlush uses three water outlets in the bowl to create a vortex of water that cleans every inch of the bowl. Add to that the toilet’s rimless design, which means there are no hidden corners for dirt to inhabit, and this promises the most efficient flush for a clean bowl every time. The design of the bowl, advanced coatings that offer triple protection from dirt, bacteria and limescale, and the selfcleaning, anti–bacterial spray arms, all come together to give you peace of mind that your toilet is always sparkling clean and safe. Offer yourself the oportunity to be kind to yourself, and your skin, every single day. T 0871 200 3414 W grohe.co.uk

Mosa favoured for naturally-sourced tiles Architectural firm Behzadi & Partner selected Mosa tiles for a stylish townhouse complex in Berlin. Constructed for Agromex GmbH & Co. KG from a design by architectural firm, Behzadi & Partner, Hafenquartier Berlin Mitte consists of 11 residential units. The complex is in the immediate neighbourhood of the central railway station, situated directly on Seller Park and the Spandau Canal. The houses and spaces are structured according to function and design requirements. Various floor plans, comprising 263-340m2 of living space (384-495m2 of usable floor space), allow for a nuanced use of space, including effective separation of private and shared areas. Based on the developer’s plan, both the interior and exterior design primarily used natural and durable sourced materials. For the bathrooms, as well as the kitchens and entry areas, the architects opted for Mosa tiles from the Beige & Brown and Terra

HI-MACS® combines clean lines with contemporary styling in basins by Dutch designers Renowned for its visually seamless aesthetic and extraordinary durability, HI-MACS® Solid Surface is the perfect choice for a bathroom environment – qualities Baths by Clay can attest to. Baths by Clay is a Dutch company specialising in bathroom furniture design and production which epitomises the importance of a balanced bathroom environment and holds the ethos that design should be made without compromise. With this in mind, many of its bespoke basins are made from HI-MACS® Solid Surface. Strong, hardwearing and easy on the eye, this homogenous material is solid throughout. And whilst it is virtually scratchproof, even if it does retain the odd mark after years of daily use, it can simply be refinished for a sleek, seamless surface. Another benefit to luxurious HI-MACS® is that it is nonporous, making it easy to clean and resistant to stains, moisture and sunlight. The 2016 basin collection includes four striking HI-MACS® styles to take bathroom design to the next level. Edge is a new form, simple yet sophisticated and characterised by its minimalist rectangular appearance and thin 12mm edge. Wave, meanwhile, encapsulates smooth, gentle contours that seamlessly blend into the worktop in a natural motion. With clean lines and curvaceous appeal, it is available in three sizes to complement both classic and contemporary settings. Also new is Level, named after its difference in levels with a raised surface for a basin-mounted tap and hand soap. Practical and beautiful, it has the option of positioning the plateau at the sides or back of the basin – a true design classic. For free-flowing motion, the Timeless washbasin has a subtle oval shape that blends seamlessly into the countertop. All these basins can be free hanging, integrated, built on top of a cabinet or on a plateau – the options are endless. HI-MACS® can be moulded into any shape and is widely used for architectural and interior applications in both residential and commercial projects. Made from a mix of acrylic, natural minerals and pigments, it creates a smooth, non-porous and visually seamless surface that meets the highest standards for aesthetics, fabrication, functionality and hygiene. The most successful bathroom schemes are created with style, durability and longevity in mind. Design should be timeless with furniture and fittings adaptable to ever-changing needs. It is this philosophy that has led Baths by Clay towards its made-tomeasure approach and the application of HI-MACS® within its cutting-edge designs. E info@himacs.eu W himacs.eu

These Laguna bathtubs convey a simple elegance, but they also add a warm atmosphere to the bathroom. All baths are manufactured by a master hand and only from the best materials. The headquarters of this innovative company are located in the Swiss village of Basadingen, in the beautiful canton Thurgau. Thomas Löpfe, the owner of the company, was originally a skilled yacht builder, before he had the idea to build unique wooden baths. His many years’ experience in building yachts enabled him to produce baths of outstanding quality. Thanks to a highly resistant coating, the tubs are very well protected and have a long service life.

The distinctive Laguna Basic is ideal where space is a concern
The 240 x 146cm Laguna Spa features an integrated drain under a broad rim with stones
The Laguna Pearl comes in Wenge, Walnut, Mahogany, Pear, Iroko and Oak
Every bath is manufactured individually and by hand, thus, the tubs can be produced from virtually every conceivable type of wood. The selected wooden veneers are compressed under high pressure and completely soaked in resin. Split-offs, the absorption of water in the wood and other unsightly wear marks can thus be avoided. The wonderful wooden surfaces convince visually, and are very easy to maintain. In terms of maintenance, if scratches are discovered after years of use, they can be polished away without much effort. The jewel among the free-standing baths is without any doubt the model Laguna Pearl. Its perfect ergonomic form guarantees a relaxed environment after a long, tiring day. The Laguna Spa bathtub is certainly an eye-catcher. Thanks to the broad rim with its integrated drain, it can be filled up to the very rim – the overflowing water disappearing into the stones and draining away. Optically, special accents can be set with different stones or other materials. The Laguna Spa, as well as all other models, are available as fully-equipped Jacuzzis. For designers seeking to create a calming oasis in a limited space, the Laguna Basic tub is an ideal solution. Thanks to its flexible exterior shape, it can easily be fitted into an existing bathroom. W alegna.ch

Tapping into an urban style
Concrete has increasingly been used in interior and product design in recent years, not only as a structural material, but also as a decorative element.
Although the use of concrete in a variety of forms has grown in the coverings and accessories sectors, it is still uncommon in the design tap sector. Ritmonio is a pioneer in this field, attesting to the company an increasing importance in the world of architecture and design. The most recent research project conducted by Ritmonio DesignLAB has led to the Ritmonio Concrete concept. This concept has taken shape in the brand new Haptic series and the iconic Diametro35 Inox series, which has become Diametro35 Inox Concrete. The Haptic handle is available with or without lever. The handle without lever can also be made of concrete. Since the handle controls the product, when it is touched by the user, the material’s tactile
HI_BS_2016.indd 34
quality reaches its fullest potential – soft, warm and almost sensual. The impressive workmanship of the concrete handle is evident in the finished product, revealing the craftsmanship of each individually poured piece, where variations add value to the product and attest its uniqueness. These features make Haptic a product with a contemporary, urban look. Diametro35 Inox Concrete is the latest addition to the Diametro35 collection, with a concrete handle version. Thanks to an innovative, high-tech approach, the new concrete handles have been combined with stainless steel to create a design element with a unique and original design. W ritmonio.it

Eskimo’s new radiator aesthetic Eskimo Design, a leading radiator designer launched its unusual vertical towel rail at 100% Design recently. Challenging the conventional ladder rail, the Gordon flash-drying towel warmer is designed to bring a new aesthetic to the bathroom, embracing the way many of us already hang our towels – on the end of the towel rail or the back of the door. Eskimo says that vertical drying is the most efficient and effective way to get warm, dry towels – far quicker and more economical than folding them horizontally. Designed to be intuitive, functional and efficient, Gordon’s clean, vertical lines are offset by the pleated folds of the towel,
putting an end to the monotony of folding and lacing towels through bars. Its pioneering design enables towels to be dried four times more quickly than horizontal ladder rails and uses a quarter of the power, making it the environmental choice for homes and hotels. Made in Eskimo’s Birmingham factory, Gordon is available in non-slip powder coated traffic white, jet black and anthracite grey. T 020 7117 0110 W eskimodesign.co.uk

Contemporary Showering Solutions When refurbishing your bathing and showering facilities it’s easy to stay on-trend and maximise the functionality and versatility of your bathroom facilities by installing a wetroom. John Blackburn, MD of UK wetroom solutions manufacturer, Impey, offers some helpful tips on achieving a successful wetroom specification ... HI_BS_2016.indd 36

Hospitality Interiors’ Bathroom 2016
The growing popularity of wetrooms is testament to the combined flexibility and aesthetic appeal that they can bring to a showering space; making the wetroom concept ideal for hotels, spas and hospitality accommodation of all kinds. The intrinsic aesthetic value of a modern wetroom as a draw for guests both returning and new can help to drive up occupancy levels and increase overall satisfaction. Many bathroom designers are of the opinion that the appeal and allure of a high-end, open plan wetroom can’t be beaten. But, not only is a wetroom or wet area practical for guests, it is a worthwhile investment for hotel owners. The principle behind a well-fitted, highquality wetroom/ wet area is that you can ‘fit and forget’. Using modern, leak-free wetroom-installation technology ensures peace of mind for specifiers and gives designers the freedom to create a space which meets the aspirations of the modern hotelier. On a practical level, opting for a wetroom makes cleaning easier and more efficient than a comparable size conventional bathroom – with less nooks and crannies for dirt and grime to accumulate – from a maintenance perspective, this saves valuable time and money. One of the key practical benefits a wetroom can offer is versatility. A wetroom is perfect for a small bathroom as it maximises the available floor-space and
HI_BS_2016.indd 37
37
gives more flexible layout options for the showering area. It’s also level access, meaning there’s no shower cubicle to step into, which is vital to many individuals, including elderly or less-mobile guests. To ensure a wetroom is compatible for use by less-mobile guests, be sure to use toughened safety glass panels (8mm+ thickness). Impey offers a bespoke selection of glass wetroom panels, which can be tailor-made in virtually any size, in a large variety of finishes and incorporating hotel logos or branding. Some strategically positioned contemporary grab rails added to your showering facilities will ensure that they are suitable for all guests, without adopting an institutional style of décor. Finishing touches are also important. As the trend for linear shapes within the bathroom continues, opt for linear wetroom drainage grates, in polished stainless steel, which can be laid close to and in-line with the wall. Impey offers a linear drainage-grate that can be inlaid with tiles which match the rest of your wetroom design, so the drain blends seamlessly with the wetroom floor. Impey’s AquaDec Linear 3 is a brand new floor former, which is the first of its kind. It enables for neat placement of a linear drainage grate, close to and inline with the wall – creating a seamless, contemporary wetroom solution perfect for hospitality bathrooms.
