As a brand, LASVIT encapsulates the experiential and transformative nature of lighting design. In recent times, the progressive Czech-based manufacturer of glass artworks has joined forces with some of the industry’s most innovative personas to evolve its dynamic portfolio yet further.
LASVIT teams up with industry greats for new lighting launches Globally-acclaimed design firm, Yabu Pushelberg proved the perfect partner for LASVIT whilst working on a hospitality project for the Four Seasons Kuwait, so it was only natural that the pair should choose to collaborate on their own lighting collection. Celebrating their mutual love for quality craftmanship and exceptional design, Cipher offers a juxtaposition of heritage techniques and contemporary form. Its delicate hand-blown crystal cylindrical pieces are cut with clean, clear lines. “The surface decoration was influenced by our fascination and exploration of the way in which etched patterning catches light,” the designers explain. “We wanted to celebrate the inherent beauty of cut crystal and the versatility of textures. We looked for ways to create different qualities of light. The form began as an extruded hexagon, but its edges were ultimately softened and smoothed to create cylindrical forms.”

Light emits only from connection points, and the sources are ingeniously hidden to soften the overall effect. With components arranged in series and joined by polished champagne gold-finished connections, Cipher’s overall linear form creates a poetic visual rhythm. As a system, the Cipher collection is extremely flexible and customisable, with limitless possible configurations for private residences and bespoke installation projects. Another key collaboration for LASVIT was with Zaha Hadid Design, with whom the brand created Eve and Duna over a two-year period. Composed of 15 glass pieces, arranged in an intriguing ensemble, Eve is a chandelier design that combines traditional glassmaking techniques with parametric design. Informed by Hadid’s renowned design language, the composition is fluid and organic, accentuating differences between clear and opaque elements.

By suspending the glass bodies at various heights, they appear to float gracefully in space, creating an impressive interplay of light and shadow. Duna, meanwhile, was inspired by the coherent, yet somewhat abstract logic of dune formations that defy traditional Cartesian geometries. Its design concept is realised in a three-dimensional, asymmetrical pair of interesecting glass forms. The striated surface of the crystal glass produces ever-changing effects of reflection and refraction. Narrowly directed light sources beam light through the mass of glass into the entire glass, thereby highlighting its geometry. lasvit.com yabupushelberg.com zaha-hadid.com

WonderGlass presents its ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’
WonderGlass presented its conceptual ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ installation at Maison & Objet 2018, allowing fair visitors to experience some of WonderGlass’ finest works across four magical glass cabinets. Pushing the boundaries of creativity and imagination, the ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ installation by WonderGlass fused surrealist photography with glass objects from design luminaries, including Nao Tamura, Marcel Wanders and Dan Yeffet. Curated across four unique quadrant spaces, each glass cabinet presented an object placed against large, illuminated visuals that framed the centrepieces. Shot in the Dolomites, Italy, by photographer Antonio Managó, this new photography series presents WonderGlass’ designs in a natural environment, etched in balance and serenity, yet with surprising elements of surrealism. The use of explosive smoke clouds and angled mirrors not only create vibrant colour splashes of hot pink and azure blue, but dramatically evoke the union of dream and reality in exquisite creations. From Dan Yeffet’s experimental floor sculpture, Hollow (2016), to Claesson Koivisto Rune’s elegant chandelier, Grappa (2014), the objects of the installation were carefully selected from WonderGlass’s catalogue of work over the last five years. wonder-glass.com

Holloways of Ludlow introduces hand-blown lighting from SkLO Holloways of Ludlow has introduced a new hand-blown collection from SkLO Lighting to its portfolio. Based in the Czech Republic, SkLO was founded in 2009 by American husband and wife team, Karen Gilbert and Paul Pavlak, and brothers Pavel and Petr Hanousek. SkLO’s designs are formed from hand-blown Czech glass, built to order from quality materials, and made by skilled craftspeople using the ancient craft of glass-blowing. This latest collection features a striking array of pendants, chandeliers, floor and table lamps. The Float pendant design is a particular highlight – each made from a spherical hand-blown glass shade that features a molten, organically-shaped open mouth. Whether displayed together, or as a standalone piece, the beauty of this design lies in the simplicity of each shade, with no two products exactly alike. Available in an opaque white glass, clear glass, and seven eye-catching glass colours, the Float pendant hangs on a brass tube ceilng stem. Other SkLO designs now on display at Holloways of Ludlow include the brand’s iconic Drape Chandelier design, which consists

of individual pendants gathered and supported by a series of metal rings to create a cluster, linear hooked or diagonal hanging chandelier. Each of the blown glass spheres are suspended on a fabricwrapped electrical cord, available in different tones to suit different interior spaces. The glass spheres feature double-dipped firepolished mouths where the piece is broken from the glass master’s pipe, making each entirely unique. The Lasso 48 Chandelier, meanwhile, is a large, linear hand-made steel light fixture featuring long rows of glass lassos – solid loops of
hand blown Czech glass – of different sizes. SkLO Lasso chandeliers are available in three lengths: 48in, 60in and 72in. The 48in chandelier is a four-bulb fixture, the 60in chandelier is a six-bulb fixture, and the 72in chandelier an eight-bulb fixture. Each socket hangs individually from exposed fabric-wrapped electrical cords, which are available in a range of standard colours. The Lasso design is also available as a pendant. 0207 602 5757 hollowaysofludlow.com

A lamp of dreams Marking a first-time collaboration, Barcelona-based designer, Eugeni Quitllet, has created the Satellight lamp for Foscarini. This striking new table and suspension lamp is characterised by its floating, luminous orb, surrounded by blown glass. Eugeni drew inspiration for the design from a dream, in which he captured a piece of the sun and held it in his hands, trapping it under a glass ball to travel down and share with the world. Thanks to a dimmable LED source, the lamp transmits a warm, gentle light that creates soft reflections upon the shiny transparent glass of the enclosure. foscarini.com

Awash with colour
Swedish lighting company, ateljé Lyktan, has released a striking new colour palette for its designs. 10 different colours have been jointly selected by interior design stylists, architects and ateljé Lyktan’s product development group. In the 1960s, ateljé Lyktan’s director Anders Pehrson introduced a broad colour palette which featured throughout ateljé Lyktan’s product range. After several decades in which a more conservative colour scale of white, grey and black has dominated – with a few exceptions – the brand is now presenting new colours throughout most of its interior lighting range. The colours are an addition to ateljé Lyktan’s standard colours and can be applied to both new and old designs alike. atelje-lyktan.se/en

Q&A: Adnan Bennani, Moroccan Bazaar From its origins as a modest yet trend-driven shop in Kensington Market in the 1970s, Moroccan Bazaar has evolved into a thriving manufacturer and supplier of Moroccan furnishings, numbering some of the globe’s most exclusive hospitality and residential properties in its portfolio. Hospitality Interiors spoke with Moroccan Bazaar’s managing director, Adnan Bennani, to find out more about this inspirational brand.
Moroccan Bazaar has an interesting history – could you tell us how the brand was founded, and a little more about how it has evolved into its current form? Our company has such a rich history. From humble beginnings, our business has changed and evolved with the evolution of Moroccan fashions and styles. We’re into our third generation of the business. My grandfather set up the company back in 1946 in the Old Medina of Fes in Morocco, trading goods to English companies such as Liberty, House of Fraser and Selfridges. My parents, Boubker and Hanane Bennani then took the reins and formally established Moroccan Bazaar in 1970 as a small shop in Kensington Market where Freddy Mercury and Roger Taylor famously had a stall. They soon expanded and opened a second outlet, a shop in D’Arblay Street, Soho which they kept for the next 25 years. In the 60’s and 70’s we were purveyors of all things fashion from Morocco.
HILighting_Feb18.indd 20
“We believe in giving back and have helped fund and establish workshops for craftsmen that are extremely skilled but may be less fortunate and not have the funds to set up their own ateliers” Marrakech became hip and happening, with celebs like Yves Saint Laurent and Jimmy Hendrix drawing inspiration from this magical city. In the 80’s through the turn of the century, our business evolved and we ventured into the interiors market, supplying all things Moroccan, and became the go-to place in London. However, the real focus of what makes Moroccan Bazaar special is that we have honed and refined over the last 15 years, and today are the most specialised company in the world when it comes to the manufacturing of authentic Moroccan interior furnishings for the FF&E
specification market. As a company, although we don’t openly market these services, we have been fortunate to work on fit-out projects, as well as furnishing hotels, restaurants and lavish residential projects with Moroccan zellige, which is the name for hand-cut mosaic tiles, wooden architectural elements such as carved ceilings, intricate and ornate doors and hand-carved gypsum. Could you tell us more about Moroccan Bazaar’s facilities and operational set-up? Our head office is located in a suburb of West London, in Greenford Middlesex to be precise. The building is set up as a Moroccan haven with intricate tiles throughout and contains, without a doubt, the largest range of products for designers to come, view and specify. Here you will find lighting, furniture and accessories of all kinds. The products we supply are either manufactured in our own workshops or
01/02/2018 11:19

in partner workshops we have set up for our craftsmen in Morocco. We believe in giving back and have helped fund and establish workshops for craftsmen that are extremely skilled but may be less fortunate and not have the funds to set up their own ateliers. At any given time, over 1000 craftsmen throughout Morocco are producing FF&E items for the company and the projects it takes on. Our UK team is comprised of a team of 10 that deals with the management of ongoing projects, designers and product designers who are always at hand to work with our clients. This team mainly assists our clients with what we know we can produce in Morocco. It’s an amazing collaborative journey that results in a very diverse week where one day we may be focused on a restaurant in Scotland, the next a castle in Ireland, a presidential suite in Uganda, or a safari lodge in Kenya. Occasionally, even a royal palace in Saudi. Could you talk about some of the hospitality projects Moroccan Bazaar has been involved in? Where would I start… Projects that we can divulge are hospitality FF&E fit-outs for hotels such as the Four Seasons Marrakech, the Four Seasons Casablanca, the Four Seasons Riyadh, Kempinski Nairobi, Tiara Miramar in the South of France, the Anantara Jabal AL Akhdar Oman, the Mondrian Doha where we collaborated with Marcel Wanders design agency. We have been very fortunate, so I could go on and on. From a residential perspective we are fairly limited by what we can divulge, but we have worked on palaces throughout Saudi, Qatar and most recently in Tangiers, Morocco. We have worked for numerous movie stars and very important royals but are not at liberty to divulge any further information than this.
What makes Moroccan Bazaar such a good fit for the hospitality sector, and what sets it apart from its competitors? In essence, as a British company with such deep roots in Moroccan craftsmanship and with our own lighting factory in Morocco, we understand what it takes to work in the contract market. We know how to take the expertise of Moroccan craftsmen and adapt it into practical, functional, yet beautiful FF&E ranges for the hospitality market in a way that will hold up to the demands of such an environment. I would definitely say the lighting sector is our strongest and we compete on a global level supplying hotel chains throughout the world with the most exquisite hand-pierced lighting that results in a truly mesmerising yet clean effect. Such ambiance that only a hand-crafted product can really portray. What would you be your dream hospitality project? My dream hospitality project would be to convert a Moroccan palace with rich Islamic design heritage into a hotel, where we could work with a budget that allowed us to really show what we as a craft nation, and not just Moroccan Bazaar, are
HILighting_Feb18.indd 21
truly capable of creating. A project where we can really go to town and use the best of Morocco’s artistry and craft know-how, both from a fit-out perspective, supplying intricate cut tiles, hand-carved gypsum, grand Moroccan ceilings and from an FF&E one with a focus on our lighting that projects the most magical of patterns, setting a relaxing mood and atmosphere for hotel guests. We would then layer this with our case goods – we focus on creating unique production runs and statement pieces for key areas such as restaurants and public spaces. What do you envisage for Moroccan Bazaar going forwards? A reinforced project management team to deal with all our current projects. We also want a greater emphasis on designing suited ranges designers can draw from or modify to suit their project. We currently have many projects that we are working on in Al Ain UAE, Doha Qatar, in Africa and Morocco as well where we are bringing our expertise to the table. We have a handful of projects that are at tender stages so prefer not to openly discuss. moroccanbazaar.com

Q&A: tp24 Could you tell us how tp24 was founded, and a little more about how it has evolved into its current form please? In 1987, tp24’s MD, Shaun Davis was the MD of a thriving interior design company which mainly provided interior fit-outs for showhomes. In 2005, Davis gradually moved his focus across to lighting design, but still concentrating on the new home developers by providing yet another service to the builders and their customers by installing lighting into the new homes prior to the buyer moving in. When the building regulations changed to make it compulsory for the developers to incorporate more energy saving in new build homes, the tp24 team started to investigate the LED lighting market and how to make the LED bulb fittings more stylish and smaller in size, without compromising on light levels. In recognition of their innovative designs, tp24 received the Best Low Energy Product Award, at Interiors 2013 for their super slim G40 LED lamp. Today, tp24 continues to thrive as a leading LED lighting designer,

manufacturer and supplier of low energy light fittings, providing LED lighting schemes to a wide range of clients including the hospitality sector. Whether it’s a new build large hotel, a boutique B&B or a funky wine bar, the tp24 team deliver inspirational LED lighting schemes to enhance any hospitality environment. Could you talk about tp24’s team, facilities and operational set-up? tp24’s extensive product range of over 500 LED lights is stocked in the UK, enabling a quick delivery. With everyone in tp24 working in close proximity to one another, communication between each team is constant, with a ‘hands on’ approach. What makes tp24 a good fit for the hospitality market? With over 13 years’ experience of supplying lighting to the UK market tp24’s new LED lighting range, Abstract, a Linear, Modular platform enables the customer to design the light fitting required for

the space, be it a large, striking piece for reception, dining and conference areas, wall lighting for a lobby or subtle bedroom lighting. What would be the key piece of advice you would give to hoteliers with regards to their lighting scheme? I think the most important piece of advice for hoteliers regarding their lighting is to always keep at the forefront of your mind that the aesthetics of the light should be the second thought, not the first, when it comes to lighting a space. Yes, you want it to look good and work with your overall scheme, but, most importantly, does it light the space in a way as to please and assist your customer? What do you envisage for tp24 going forwards? Onwards and upwards – the tp24 team are constantly striving to encompass the innovation of the LED lighting market to the forefront of their designs and with the continuous growth of remote controls and app technology, we see this as the next step of the LED lighting generation. tp24.com

Illuminate Lighting Design, a subdivision of Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), has completed the lighting scheme for Jackrabbit – a restaurant within Portland’s Hilton Duniway hotel.
Illuminate creates seamless lighting scheme at Portland restaurant Designed by Punch Architecture, Jackrabbit’s interior spans numerous zones to create varied dining experiences. These include two dining areas, private dining rooms, a bar, lobby coffee bar, raw bar with seafood display and a meat display refrigerator. The lighting scheme draws from the restaurant’s core principles of simplicity, sustainability, authenticity and craft, creating a synergy of built environment and dining experience. Crucially, these lighting scenes create varied moods throughout

the day, from breakfast through to late night and after hours settings. Illuminate Lighting Design has incorporated a blend of striking decorative lighting and subtle architectural lighting. Custom-designed chandeliers from PUNCH Architecture, made from vintage bike wheels, create a cultural connection with Portland’s love of the outdoors, while architectural light fixtures have been discreetly and strategically placed among the wood beams in the ceiling to provide functional lighting on table surfaces.
A combination of recessed and stem- mounted downlights at 2700K- 90 CRI spread light on the tables and the food on display, while warmer 2200K decorative ceiling and wall fixtures provide a welcoming glow to complement the interior style. Key features like brick walls, leatherclad walls and burnt wood screens are enhanced with tighter beam downlights and linear grazers. illuminateld.com puncharc.com

Nulty creates concepts for new Ritz-Carlton in Kazakhstan Nulty has recently completed work on the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Astana, situated in Kazakhstan’s high-end, mixed use development, Talan Towers. Working alongside London design studio, Blacksheep, Nulty has created two individual lighting design concepts – one for the hotel’s all-day dining destination, MÖKKI, and the other for its penthouse sky bar, Selfie. Located on the third floor of the luxury development, MÖKKI features a large open space that encompasses a bakery, deli and grill. The main dining area at the heart of MÖKKI is characterised by a curved timber dropped ceiling, illuminated by track-mounted spotlights, positioned within the soffit above. This allows light to graze through the timber fins, creating movement and intrigue whilst highlighting key areas of the restaurant. A feature marble wall wraps the perimeter of the space with carefullypositioned LED lights integrated behind, washing light up to create a subtle perimeter horizon. Low-level lighting has been added to the shelves within the bakery and deli, with integrated LEDs in the

joinery to illuminate the produce. Complementing the clean architecture of the various spaces, a brass trough is incorporated into the ceiling to form a grid system, allowing a consistent design aesthetic to flow throughout. Surface-mounted spotlights are nestled within the trough to provide general illumination, whilst suspended brass rails allow beams of soft light to graze the marble counters below. The exclusive Selfie bar and restaurant, meanwhile, is on the 18th floor of the tower. The space boasts spectacular panoramic views of the city’s skyline, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows. The extraordinary ambience is created through a rich palette of jet black marble, mahogany wood, velvet and copper, which continues throughout the space. The dark interior design is lifted by high ceilings that feature deep recessed downlights to provide an intriguing dining experience. The lighting is purposely refined throughout to encourage intimacy and emphasise the breathtaking views. The back of the restaurant features a slate marble wall installation trimmed with copper edges and illuminated by integrated LEDs to pick up the texture in the interior and provide additional depth to the space. Mahogany wood columns punctuate the external wall of the restaurant and have been washed with light from above to highlight the rich material palette. Decorative copper pendants are suspended throughout the dining space to create additional drama and contrast, whilst exuding a warm, intimate glow. nultylighting.co.uk

The scouting process is the key to Artemest’s success in the field, while the customisation opportunities offered by its artisans give infinite options to interior designers searching for the perfect piece for their projects. Artemest offers a broad spread of lighting products from an array of prestigious and innovative brands. Edizioni Design’s 30 Lamp design, for example, is formed from metal finished in black, with a striking top wooden insert. Its slim shape is artfully supported by a concealed carved metal base inside the lower part of the structure. Designed by the talented Matteo Zorzenoni for MM Lampadari, the Leaf chandelier is a magnificent contemporary piece. The large version of the design features three tiers with lights and shades in hand-worked iron with a polished copper finish. Another striking pieces is the Mondrian Glass Chandelier from VeniceM. Featuring five mouth-blown Murano glass spheres in white, amethyst of smoke-grey, the chandelier is defined by the elegant geometry of its metal structure. artemest.com

Diade by Monica Armani
During imm cologne, Luceplan presented two of its most innovative lamps – Diade, in a new version designed by Monica Armani, and Amisol by Daniel Rybakken – in the display space at Design Post. Thanks to its collaborations with leading designers and architects, Luceplan has always produced innovative lighting developed to respond to human needs, combining functional quality, technology and aesthetic refinement. These special characteristics are vividly applied in Amisol, a suspension lamp of great theatrical impact that made its world debut at the last Salone del Mobile in Milan, and has now been launched
Amisol by Daniel Rybakken

on the international market. Amisol is driven by the creative flair of Daniel Rybakken; a lamp with clean lines, suitable for both residential contexts and contract projects. The design features a translucent white film or a metallised reflecting membrane stretched inside a circular aluminium border. Like a solar sail, a powerful light source projects a beam of light onto the large, very light disk, with slender rods connecting the two main parts. By altering the length and points of connection of the support cables, the rotation of the disk can be set at any angle. The light precisely reflected or diffused by the circular structure makes the project simultaneously theatrical and poetic. The combination of technical lighting design and acoustic comfort is a theme that has become a central focus for Luceplan in recent years, with constant investment in research on new technologies that interface physical parameters and the needs of perception, without compromising the dynamism and chromatic qualities of light. One result of this ongoing experimentation is Diade by Monica Armani which, after its world premiere at Design Post during Orgatec 2016, returns in a new version equipped with glareproofing, ideal for offices and spaces where monitors are used. The suspension lamp is composed of a central extruded body and two panels that can be installed vertically or horizontally, creating a screen, a luminous fixture. The two rigorously-designed ‘wings’ are thermoformed with sound-absorbing wadding, etched by lines that provide decorative impact while channeling the LED light to respond to different needs. Available in a range of colours, Diade is a modular architectural element that defines space, personalising rooms with understated elegance and remarkable visual comfort. luceplan.com

Serip has a strong presence in the international market, exporting more than

96 % of production and reaching more than 77 countries on five continents. The company is currently investing in monobrand showrooms in order to consolidate its international standing, with three showrooms already established in Kiev, Jakarta and Beijing. The Aqua Collection has an inherent connection with the identity of the Serip family, expressing as it does a strong connection to the brand’s principal source
of inspiration – nature. The bronze structure of the design expands in entangled branches that lead to floating glass pieces, creating a delicate and elegant aesthetic down to the smallest detail of the glass drops. Available in several chromatic design options, The Aqua Collection is highly customisable, making it eminently suitable for any interior concept. serip.co.uk

Lighting up 2018
Chantelle Lighting is always looking for inspiration for the next big lighting trends. Here, the team discusses the new materials and designs it is excited to work with over the coming months: • T he use of materials such as brass, gold, silver, marble and copper show no sign of diminishing in popularity any time soon, but there also looks to be some new lighting trends which will be the next big thing. • Soft, neutral colour tones look set to be replaced by bolder, more vivid colour schemes. • Chantelle Lighting’s Sulphur range has been popular with designers since the brand launched the exclusive paint finish. With colours including orange, red, mustard, blue and green, it looks set to become one of the company’s most sought-after product ranges in 2018 as designers inject some colour into their projects. • Another key trend will be bespoke feature light fittings, perfect for creating an unusual backdrop to photos. • From huge chandeliers to the use of unusual materials, custom-designed light fittings will help venues to stand out from the competition and become the must visit bar, restaurant or hotel. • Industrial themes will continue to be big in 2018 but perhaps with more of a focus on polished nickel and silver, bringing something fresh to this ever-popular trend. chantellelighting.co.uk

Alphabet of Light: a language of light by Artemide Renowned for its design, quality and innovation, Italian lighting brand Artemide has created its own language of light in collaboration with Danish architecture and design firm, BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group). Alphabet of Light comprises a series of wall-mounted letters that are formed from curved and linear elements of LED strip light. A fine display of mechanical innovation – each strip light is connected using electromagnets to allow for quick reconfiguration of the lamp, making assembly easy for the user. When illuminated, the system’s entire inner workings and joints are concealed leaving only a minimalist and elegant product on display. Made with groundbreaking high-tech, patented optoelectronics, Alphabet of Light emits a
smooth, even light which can travel up to a maximum of 5m along the connected elements. An abacus of essential geometries that can be rearranged to form letters or words as well as graphic signs, Alphabet of Light is a bespoke typeface that translates into light – an alphabet to express one’s thoughts or a tool to give shape to spaces. These simple base modules, with specific geometric proportions, can be combined with one another to create countless basic or more complex, linear or curved structures of light. Components are available in different sizes meaning the light can be customised and scaled to fit different walls, ceilings or spaces within minutes. artemide.com

Infused with nature Petite Friture has launched Chains – a new, multi-functional lighting collection designed by Sylvain Willenz. The collection is inspired both by nature and the magic of a lighting garland, its shape reminiscent of a ribbed shell. Chains is available as a single pendant or in multiple versions, and so can be adapted to suit different spaces and environments. The multiple version can be installed as a beautiful single cascade or, alternatively, the triple pendants can be installed separately to create three individual cascades. petitefriture.com
