looked down the barrel of my police issued Bushmaster M4 carbine at the man in utter disgust and contempt.
“A man?” I thought to myself, “No man hides behind a child with a knife. Only a coward would do such a thing”. I yelled at him with a voice full of resolve and command, “Let the girl go or I will put you down!” “Never!”, he snarled as he shrank smaller behind the girl’s slight frame as only a coward would. I surveyed him, looking desperately for an opening so I could end this. His teeth were rotten and had spots of color that represented decay. His skin was pale and sickly mimicking the wretched tint of his teeth. In whole, the man in his very essence was this nauseating hue, the color of a coward. He shifted the girl suddenly in order to tighten his grip, but in that moment his knife moved as well, giving me my opening. The muzzle of my gun flashed with a bright hue, wiping out his cowardice forever and releasing the young girl. I smiled as she bathed in the warm, sunlit color of freedom.

t was 4:45am and Big Bob took in a deep breath of cold, muggy Chicago air and exhaled it slowly back out in a moisturized cloud. While most of the city slept away, he loved being up this early on such a cold day. Big Bob was a kind soul, but wasn’t blessed with a whole lot of light upstairs. He preferred the simpler things in life, like feeding birds at the park, waving hello to strangers and working his roadside construction job.
Construction work suited him as his job was simple and straightforward. Drill a hole somewhere, shovel the debris away so pipes or cabling could be installed and repeat. He was good at it and loved the pattern the honest labor offered him.
Red H
is voice rose above the quiet chatter in the small conference room. Violent anger brimmed from each word that he uttered. I sat there and tried to picture a representation of the situation unfolding before my eyes.
The words were assaulting my ears, crashing through my thoughts and transforming from sound to overwhelming images in my mind’s eye. The hue of these words were ever so distinctive as if to mirror the blood forming behind his temple. The color bounced off the inner walls of my brain and tried to send a message to the nervous system. It said: “look at me! I represent danger!”
His favorite part however was the color. Everything around him, from the traffic cones to the roadwork signs were painted in this warm hue that signified “Slow down”.
I surveyed the small meeting room to see if anyone else was echoing my concerns. My gaze fell on the angry man’s partner whose face reflected the familiar hue. However his expression was not of fear, but rather of shame.
This color protected him from speeding drivers and marked his zone where he could excel in his work. It greeted him every morning and said farewell every night like the rising and setting sun.
He was embarrassed by his associate and the color of his skin said it all. This small conference room was painted with anger, fear and shame, so much emotion, so much color.
This color was his protector, his guide and friend.

he school bell rang loudly through the halls signaling to all the relieved students that class was over.
“OMG Holly, your dress is totes cute! I can’t even though!” Holly sighed and turned in the direction of the squeals. Her eyes rested on her three classmates who looked like they came from the “Legally Blonde” movie set, all matching in the one color that Holly hated the most. Before she moved to suburban Cali, Holly lived in a town with less than 4,000 people deep in the heart of rural Tennessee. The only colors she saw there were brown, green and twinges of sunrise red if she woke up early enough. To her, those colors were all real and natural, not like these fake valley girls and their bright Barbie Doll colored designer clothes. “Holly, we are going to Starbucks to get Pumpkin Spice Lattes, do you want one, girl?” Why any of these 15 year old girls needed that much $8 coffee was beyond her. “Aw thanks”, Holly replied with a smirk. “But I need to go hang myself with an adorbs Gucci bag”. And with that she walked off grinning. Cali might be kind of fun after all.

harles jumped over and behind
a large rock seeking cover with a nimble bound as bullets whizzed narrowly by his head. Despite the peril of his situation he was not afraid, as he was descended from a long line of valiant warriors. His family tree had much royalty among its branches and almost every male in his lineage held a knighthood. In other words: courage and nobility ran in his blood and fueled his very being.
Charles gripped his SA80 A2 assault rifle, took a deep breath and rolled out from behind cover, unleashing a barrage of gunfire into the advancing enemy. The deadly 5.56mm rounds found their mark as the charging insurgents fell short of his squad’s position. “You saved us!” a young private to his right exclaimed. However the private’s words barely even registered to Charles as he became aware of the blood spot growing above his heart where the enemy’s fragmented bullet was lodged. With his men safe, the world got dark as he calmly drifted off from blood loss. Yet he took comfort that when he awakes, a medal of deep regal color symbolizing courage and sacrifice would be pinned over his red beating heart.
Blue T
he man deep in thought muttered to himself, “what to do about the color?” He was a big shot creative director at one of the largest ad agencies in the nation, yet at this moment he felt like a new intern, stuck on this basic detail.
Green J
ohn looked in disdain at his neighbor’s immaculately groomed yard. The roses were a luscious red, the crisp leaves on the trees had warm twinges of orange and the line of daisies leading up to the house was a welcoming color of yellow.
Without the right color to express the tone and emotion of the message, his campaign would fail and he would lose this client. “Not acceptable,” he whispered to himself.
Yet through this rainbow of hues, the color that hit John in the face the hardest was the freshly trimmed grass that bristled in the breeze mockingly at him. John hated that color all his life.
This ad was about a journey that started in the depths of sadness and then soared to the sky with a wonderful calming message of hope. The chosen color had to communicate this complex transition of both tone and emotion.
At 6, it meant those horrid brussel sprouts with dinner.
He thought of depressing times, of crying, of losing everything, and the color he felt seemed to suck the very breath out of him. Then he turned to calming times when he witnessed waves crashing on the beach, the security of being near the police officer after the break in, the very color of a cloudless sky signifying everything will be at peace. With a smile and a spark of inspiration, he picked up the colored marker and started to design.
At 16, it took the form of an embarrassing colored bow tie that his mom made him wear to prom. At 26, it was the color of all the money he dreamed of having, but could not quite get his hands on as an assistant to the secretary of a bankrupt accountant. And now at 36, he was faced again with this nemesis hue assaulting his eyes in the form of groomed grass and a voice saying, “Your yard is not good enough, he will win again.” John sulked back into his house and his mediocre suburban life while that jealous little voice in his head lived to fight another day.
Grey D
efense attorney Greg Miller looked over the case in front of him. On July 2nd at 8:49pm, his client fired a total of 13 rounds into the chest, neck and head of an unarmed man ending his life forever.
This will be the opening and closing statement from the prosecutor, branding Miller’s client as a ruthless murderer. However in Miller’s eyes, the case was not that clean cut. No, this was an act of self-defense. While the prosecution’s facts were not false, they painted a limited black and white picture. In reality, the dead victim was over 6.4’ and 290lbs with hands the size of bowling balls. At the time of the shooting, he was enraged from PCP and hell bent on getting more. When he came upon the 140lb defendant, he was foaming at the mouth, blaring obscenities and charging him. The frightened and trapped defendant saw no escape and drew from concealment and fired. The assailant traveled more than 15 yards during the shooting and was only stopped when the 13th round collapsed his spine, inches away from the defendant. No, this case was not black and white at all and Miller would prove it in a court of law.

While the rich target partied in the safety of the light, Hunter nimbly climbed onto the dock and disappeared into the shadows. Once hidden, he stripped from his wetsuit and donned an expensive tux that he kept in a waterproof bag. He checked to make sure that his silenced Glock 19 was secure and then tucked it out of sight.
For most of her life, she had lived in darkness and shame because of another man, a monster who took her innocence away when she was very young, too young. His sinister shadow was forever haunting her dreams, looming over her, blotting out the sun even after she escaped his evil grasp.
t was a late starless Saturday night as Agent John Hunter stealthy swam in the colorless water towards the billionaire’s private pier.
Ten minutes later Hunter successfully infiltrated the lavish mansion and observed the wild gala before him. He spotted a total of 14 security guards all donned in dark tactical gear and weaponry. This would be tough, but tough is what Hunter specialized in. He spotted his target in the next room. Discreetly he pressed the side of his specially designed Rolex, instantaneously shorting out all the lights. As the partygoers and security personnel’s vision cutout, he smoothly drew his pistol and took out the target with one to the head and two to the chest. Then before anyone could respond, he was gone, disappearing into the dark shadows once again.
he gazed lovingly into the kind hazel eyes of her betrothed. It had been too long since she felt this happy, this free and this innocent.
Yet this all changed when she met her love. His lips spoke soft words of comfort and encouragement, his touch gentle and loving. This prince charming of a man showed her the way back to her confidence in herself and humanity, enabling her to overcome her shame and take back her innocence that she so dearly craved. When he asked for her hand and promised her a life of trust and sincerity, she wept tears of joy that washed away the dark shadow forever. Now she stood tall and confident in a dress and veil that rustled softly in the breeze. Their color was of purity and glowed with her heart. She took his hand and together they said “I do.”
