Inside Your Beauty Products 001_ HOW TO USE PLANT BASED COSMETICS 002_ INSIDE YOUR NAIL POLISH 003_ EYE ON INGREDIENTS PARABENS
The average woman uses 12 beauty products every day, from lotions to makeup. Many of us assume they are safe. But in reality, there’s no regulation for many of these products and that prompted a local business owner to be the change. Cosmetics and other beauty products are loaded with chemicals, many of which have been linked to numerous health problems, including cancer. We should take the actions to protect ourself.

HOW TO USE PLANT BASED COSMETICS
Consumers are more and more aware of the value of organic raw materials, sustainable sourcing and an ecological approach in the cosmetics and grooming products they ply on their bodies. But what exactly are the qualities that a product has to have to be considered ‘natural’? What’s the difference between ‘natural’ and ‘organic’? What are the advantages of these products over conventional ones? Here, we answer these questions and show you how to use plant based products properly, too.

Can organic cosmetics trigger allergies? Whilst every person differs, there is indeed a risk of developing allergies for people who are sensitive to certain natural ingredients. For example, if you have a nut allergy, don’t use almond or peanut oil based products, or if you are allergic to flower pollen, avoid ingredients like chamomile. Organic cosmetics are normally generally well tolerated by the body, however.

Will using plant based cosmetics change my skin? Maybe. Sometimes the skin needs time to adjust to the natural substances. In the beginning, because of this it is possible that irritations and blemishes occur. It takes two to six weeks for the skin reactions to fade away – but after that time, you may notice a more natural, healthy glow radiating from your skin. Yay!

Inside Your Nail Polish
Your favorite brand of nail polish might have a hidden ingredient that can wreak havoc in your body. Researchers at Duke University and the Environmental Working Group have pinpointed a common polish ingredient that may be dangerous, especially for people who frequently paint their nails. Triphenyl phosphate, or TPHP, makes nail polishes more flexible and durable, and is also used to make plastic and to stop foam furniture from catching fire. It may have been introduced to nail polishes to replace phthalates, which studies have linked to reproductive issues. But the replacement might not be that much of an improvement. Separate studies have shown that TPHP is an endocrine disruptor, which means it interferes with hormones, and tests on animals have shown reproductive and developmental problems as a result. In humans, scientists say it may be linked to weight gain, but further studies need to be done before they can say anything conclusively.
29
SPRING 2017
#1 SPRING 2018
Painting your nails may seem like an innocent part of your beauty routine, but inside those colorful bottles are some not so pretty secrets. Toxic chemicals are common in nail polish, and there’s often no way for you to know exactly what’s lurking inside.
The chemical is included in 49 percent of more than 3,000 nail polishes and treatments collected by the researchers, and some polishes contain it even when they say they don’t. (Clear polishes usually contain more TPHP than colored ones.) Separate studies show that women process more of it than men, which points to the idea that they might be absorbing it through beauty products.
8
The researchers, who published their results in the journal Environment International, tested the urine of 26 participants before and after they painted their nails with a polish that contained 1 percent TPHP. Two to six hours after painting their nails, 24 of the participants had slightly elevated levels of diphenyl phosphate, or DPHP, a chemical that indicates TPHP has been processed in the body. And 10 to 14 hours after painting the nails, every
ISSUE_001
single participant had DPHP levels increase by nearly seven times. Participants who wore gloves to apply the polish to synthetic nails didn’t have any difference in DPHP levels. The Environment Working Group has launched a petition asking nail polish companies to remove TPHP from its products, and has published a database of the brands that contain TPHP as an ingredient on its website. Study coauthor Kate Hoffman told Yahoo Health that if you must use polish, avoid getting it on your skin to keep it from absorbing into your bloodstream.

Eye on Ingredients Parabens First ingredient we’re covering is something so ubiquitous that you’re likely to find it in four out of five cosmetic products you pick up at your local drugstore: parabens.
What Are They? I am guessing that many of you already know all about parabens, but it’s never a bad idea to give yourself a little refresher. Or perhaps you’ve found yourself avoiding them,

bound to be accompanied by parabens. Typically more than one form of the ingredient is found in a product.
A paraben is the name for any of a group of compounds used as preservatives in both phar-maceutical and
ISSUE_001
cosmetic products—as well as in the food industry. Their chemical structure is a series of parahydroxybenzoates or esters of parahydroxybenzoic acid. Nicknamed PHBA, this acid is found naturally in many fruits and vegetables. Since the 1950s, parabens have been widely used in all sorts of products to prevent bacteria growth. The reason they’re so popular is that they’re extremely inexpensive and effective. This means they extend the shelf life of many products, eliminating your need for a makeup mini fridge.
The most common are Butylparaben, Methylparaben, and Propylparaben. In October of 2014, the European Commission adopted a cosmetic regulation that banned the use of 5 parabens in cosmetic products—Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Phenylparaben, Benzylparaben and Pentylparaben. The cited the reason for passing this regulation was that the human risk from exposure to these five varieties was still unknown. Furthermore, the Danish government introduced a ban on March 15th, 2011, on the use of propyl & butylparabens in products targeted for children under 3 years old. Despite being slightly more limited, the presence of parabens in the EU still runs rampant, with the most common forms continuously being used without restriction. The past five years or so have seen a rise in consumer concern regarding parabens, causing various brands to manufacture paraben-free lines of products. Nevertheless, when you pick up a product at your local drugstore, it’s more likely than not that you’ll see a paraben or two amongst the ingredient list.

the study also found parabens in the non-cancerous tissue and did not have a control group. Therefore, many scientists have deno-unced it as not scientifically tenable. The study did prove, in my opinion, that there is a need for more studies. We can’t know for sure that parabens cause cancer, but we also can’t say with certainty that they don’t. Beyond the potential hormone disruption and cancer risk, another reason to be wary of parabens is that you very well may be having an allergic reaction to them. This Spring/Summer, makeup and beauty took a turn. In continuation from last season’s ‘you-do-you’ approach, it was less about trends and more about a new feeling of ‘whatever goes’. In saying that, there were still noticeable running themes throughout the shows. Colour took centre stage on the eyes and the lips, with bright red pouts, glistening glitter and electric hues on the eyes all spotted backstage. Nails and skin were pared-down but incredibly chic, with the words ‘athletic’ and ‘radiant’ constantly springing to mind.

PHLUR Fragrances
Whatever screen you’re viewing this post from. And that makes buying the perfect fragrance tough. But let’s be honest, shopping for perfume, or eau de cologne, or what-have-you can be just as tough in person when you have your nose working with you. You could go to the mall and be bombarded by department stores firing all types of sprays in your direction - then get a headache and have to go home and shower off the combination of 13 too many scent combinations. You could track down then buy the perfume that you smelled on a friend (and harassed her til she told you the name) only to discover it doesn’t smell anything on you like it does on her - then refuse to wear it out of disappointment and jealousy. You could test a fragrance for a week, fall in love with it, and then try to justify spending your month’s disposable income to buy

The Beauty Trends You’re About To See Everywhere
Do you have a secret lurking in your makeup bag? (And is its name MAC or Christian Dior?) If you haven’t quite made the crossover to clean beauty because you’re hooked on the hues in not-so-great-for-you formulations, there’s a new trend right now that might turn you into a full natural beauty convert. “I’m definitely seeing a lot of innovation in color right now in cosmetics,” says Annie Jackson, vice president of merchandising and planning at Credo Beauty, which is opening a fourth location (in Williamsburg, Brooklyn) this April. “Brands are coming to market with products that are what you’d find in conventional beauty—but with clean ingredients.” Just look at the influx of pretty purples and aquamarines hitting the nontoxic beauty aisles—Jackson points to W3ll People’s colorful mascaras (a fresh take on their cult fave) as a prime example. “Companies are coming out with blue eyeliners and bright hues of mascara, where even two years ago we didn’t see that kind of product development,” she says. “People do want more pops of color than [in] earlier years,” affirms Ashley Prange, founder of Au Naturale Cosmetics, an organic line that carries a rainbow of eyeshadows and lipsticks. “They also want saturated color in a semi-matte finish.” That’s why she’s launching even more bold lip and eye products in April (score).

Companies are coming out with blue eyeliners and bright hues of mascara, where even two years ago we didn’t see that kind of product development.
Whereas your typical out-there shade is made with artificial dyes, natural brands are able to obtain gorgeous (and just as vibrant) hues from, well, the earth. “If you just travel across the US, you’ll see some beautiful, bright red rocks, for instance,” says Regis Haberkorn, president of sales and marketing at Inika, a vegan cosmetics brand. “Nature has the ability to make these colors. You just have to be stubborn enough to obtain those materials.” Jackson agrees that it’s a lot harder to formulate with clean ingredients (as opposed to the chem-lab formulations that most mainstream beauty brands use): “These [clean] brands have really hustled and worked with manufacturers to come up with great products that are as on-trend as anything you find in other retailers, but without the toxic or questionable ingredients.” So if ever there was a time to safely experiment with green lipstick (hey, you never know), it’s now. RMS: The Living Luminizer gives the ultimate natural luminous glow to the skin that can’t be beat. It can be applied beautifully to cheekbones and other elevated areas of the face such as, the brow bone, center of the eye lid for a light-reflective twinkle, along the bow of the lips (giving the appearance of a more sensual mouth ISSUE_001
and pout), down the center of the nose (which gives the illusion of a longer, slimmer nose), or in the corner of the eyes, along the L-shaped tear ducts. My favorite trick is to use it directly on any dark, undereye bag (apply only to the darker area not the whole under eye area) then add the “Un” Cover-Up on top. This minimizes darkness and gives a similar result to the YSL Touche Eclat, but not as drying.

AA: Tell me about your line’s emphasis on coconut oil and the healing benefits from using this all-natural staple? RMS: RMS Beauty is the first brand to actually base their color cosmetic line on raw coconut oil. The Coconut Cream is a miracle product and contains high levels of lauric acid, which is rarely found in nature. Coconut oil actually helps heal acne-prone skin, skin irritations and keeps the skin looking youthful. AA: For the daytime, I am all about a clean, glowy and radiant look. Duh. Can you give me the steps needed to achieve this look? RMS: To create that look, begin by priming/moisturizing your skin for makeup application with a very small amount of RMS Beauty Oil or even the RMS Beauty Lip & Skin Balm (which comes in cocoa and vanilla!) followed by a little “Un” Cover-Up for beautiful, natural, glowing skin. Add a hint of Living Luminizer over the lid and cheekbones for that lightreflective glow. Something as simple as a light wash of the new Lip2Cheek in Demure is the perfect shade of pink and can be used on both lip and cheeks. You can’t go wrong. AA: What is your all-time favorite beauty trick? RMS: My favorite beauty trick: “Less is more.” Too much makeup does not look good in real life.

A Parisian Editor’s Best Natural Beauty Advice for Spring
Clémence von Mueffling, 37, is a third generation beauty editor. Born in Paris, she was introduced to body creams, toners and fragrances at an early age — both her mother and grandmother served as beauty editors at Vogue Paris from the late ‘50s through the early ‘90s. “I remember them telling me that there was a code among the women who worked there — they were all incredibly elegant and polished,” says von Mueffling. Still, she didn’t immediately pursue the same career path: Instead she spent nearly five years on the marketing and communications side at brands

Simple Sustainable Styling Tips The best thing about avoiding fast fashion is that you are less likely to look like everyone else. Slow fashionistas couldn’t care less about the latest shipment into Zara; they’re not salivating all over fashion week FROWs, dying to ‘buy the runway’ with some app so they can be the first to look exactly like the model did on the catwalk. No indeed, the slow fashionista is into individuality! Even when her clothes are looking a bit dated or worn out, she’ll find a way to keep them fresh again. How, you may ask? Well, here I’ve compiled some of the smartest sustainable styling tips I could think of, to keep your

In a world where everything is getting more and more homogenised, customising your clothes is a great way to make a statement; to stand out and be different. Show your unique personality! Are you a bit of a punk rebel, who would paint a cool text on a leather jacket? Or do you have a more classic style, preferring to give a nod to your heritage by pinning some of your nan’s broaches on your blazer?

2. Roll It Up, Tuck It In A pair of vintage jeans; a white organic cotton shirt; a vintage blazer; a hand knitted sweater. They’re all perfect basics and definitely belong in every wardrobe. But every once in a while, they just need a little twist to make them a bit more exciting. The easiest way to do this is to simply roll up your jeans (just above the ankle

is currently chic); your sleeves (just below the elbow, never above), or to tuck in a tip of your shirt or sweater in a bit the front (looks extra stylish with a great belt). Easy peasy!
3. Add A Hat Oh, I do love a great hat! Whether it’s rain or sun you’re protecting your face from, or whether you’re wearing it for reasons of etiquette (think: Ascot) or as the finishing touch to a cool look, a hat always makes a good addition to your outfit. This versatile item can be worn in countless styles and for many reasons. It really can be the metaphorical cherry on your outfit cake. My tips? Wear it a bit towards the back of your head, so the brim frames your face like a bit of a ‘halo’, you little fashion angel! Ensure hair is hanging loose and easy, too – and when it doubt, ask yourself: “What would Gigi wear?”

4. Viva La Vintage! Vintage items tell stories of previous lives, which gives them a certain mysterious flair. Hunting around vintage markets – be they whilst you’re exploring Paris or London on holiday, in charity shops in your hometown, or online – is super fun, and when you find a perfect piece, it feels like unearthing buried treasure. No one else will have that exact piece, and no one else will style it the way you do. Even cooler is the fact that you help the environment by reusing old clothing instead of using new products. What’s hot right now? Pieces from the 70s, like platform shoes, oversized sunglasses and midi skirts and coats. But a gorgeous antique kimono is always on the top of my vintage wish list, as is anything by 70s iconic designer Ossie Clark.
5. Tie A Scarf A vintage silk scarf is a classic you can use in myriad ways. Tie it around your neck, wrap it around your bag handles, or weave it through your belt loops. Whether it’s eccentrically patterned or simply plain coloured, a scarf brings a pop of colour to every outfit. And if you’re looking for the perfect one, well, you’re spoilt for choice! I’m crazy for Emma J Shipley’s artistically patterned scarves, for example, and of course, who doesn’t love some vintage Hermes?

Probiotics are a good idea, continues Relman, but because they’re not personally tailored to each individual’s unique microbiome, lasting change resides in coupling them with a consistent change in diet and behavior. And while nutritional needs vary person to person, as a general rule of thumb, Relman’s prescription is this: “Seriously diminish sugar and fat and increase fiber. Those are things that we believe are almost always good,” says Relman.

As the end of January draws near, let today mark the first checkin with your efforts for a “new year, new me.” Feeling the urge to help things along is only natural, which is why a next-level culture of cleansing is rising to meet the demand in 2017. Trade Colonics for a Tablespoon of Coconut Oil The colonic craze has seemingly reached an all-time high. While many holistic practitioners praise the bowelirrigating treatment with detoxification of the body, preventing constipation, and promoting weight loss, many doctors believe it can do more harm than good. According to Dr. Christine L. Frissora, associate professor of clinical medicine at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at New York’s Weill Medical College of Cornell University, the benefits of colonics are “a myth.” She notes that, “Operating rooms pay thousands of dollars to sterilize
