STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CREATIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

As GENLUX strides into 2025, we’re about to celebrate 20 years of creating award-winning imagery, including having over 100 remarkable women grace our covers. From luminaries in film and sports to philanthropic icons, models, businesswomen, and television stars, each has left an indelible mark on our pages. On this cover, we are thrilled to feature Virginia-born beauty Emma Gawinski, a 5-foot 10-inch vision from Wilhelmina Models in Los Angeles.

Captured through the lens of the talented Robert Steinken—who seamlessly blends his artistry as a hairstylist with his photographic prowess—we present a stunning collection of black-and-white studio images. We had the chance to interview Emma and hear about her many facets and accomplishments, This Face (p62).

On a crisp Sunday morning, we ventured down to Wien’s Cellars winery in Temecula, California, owned by David and Stephanie Steinhafel, for a shoot with photographer Andrew Matusik, where, in a nod to the symbiotic relationship between fashion and luxury automobiles, we welcomed McLaren’s latest masterpiece, the 750s Spider—a sleek orange convertible supercar with a price tag to match—somewhere in the vicinity of $400,000.

On approach to the location, an unexpected spectacle took our breath away: a kaleidoscope of colorful hot air balloons gracefully ascending into the dawn sky. At that moment, we vowed to return one day to board one. Our model for this shoot was the stunning and witty

Ukrainian model Valeriya Kuklishima from Industry Management. The evermeticulous-stylist Joline Towers dressed her in fashion from Celine, CHANEL, Chloe, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Marciano, Tom Ford, and Jimmy Choo.

Stretching beyond his photographic talents, Matusik enriches his student’s minds as a professor at Vanguard University. He invited some of his film students to join us on set, contributing to our fashion film—a delightful fusion of education and artistry. Prepare for Takeoff (p46).

Leading our Mane Event hairstyle story (p38), the dynamic husband and wife duo of photographer Robert Lynden and hairstylist Ginger Boyle teamed up with makeup artist Uzo. A side note to Uzo’s brilliant makeup artistry is her dual degree in medicine and surgery before switching gears. We can only imagine the spirited conversation Uzo had with her parents about that decision, but one for which she has no regrets.

Photographer Nathalie Gordon is back in GENLUX with a comfy and cozy fashion story featuring model Emeri Mayo from Industry LA, Knit Happens (p74) . Stylist Lisa Smith Craig pulled exquisite colorful knitwear, as our ever-present Robert Steinken (represented by Frank Moore at Celestine Agency) was back again on hair and first-time GENLUX artist Bethany Garita with Art Department delivered a beautiful makeup treatment. Enjoy! G

CHIN’S POWERFUL ART IS MATCHED BY HIS DEDICATION TO PHILANTHROPIC ACTION.

A—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI

rtist Alan Chin stands at the intersection of form and fluidity, carving a prolific path as an interdisciplinary creator. Based in Los Angeles, Chin earned his BFA in Ceramics and Painting from California College of the Arts and further honed his craft at Academie Minerva in the Netherlands. With a diverse practice spanning painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and film, his core mediums—ceramics, found objects, and oil on canvas—explore the profound within the mundane, transforming everyday materials into poignant reflections on contemporary life.

Chin’s approach is grounded in the belief that art is a mirror to human behavior, a delicate dance between chaos and order. His works are dynamic systems, ever-evolving, offering clarity amid the world’s disarray—illuminating shared experiences.

He’s exhibited internationally, with notable shows at the Berkeley Art Museum, The Kaneko, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. In 2017, he represented the U.S. at China’s International Sculpture Biennale. In 2021, he co-founded Space Ten, an artist-run curatorial space, expanding his influence as both a creator and cultural advocate.

Chin’s contributions extend beyond the gallery walls. He has generously supported a wide range of charities, including the Children’s Action Network, Special Olympics, UNICEF , the American Red Cross, The Art of Elysium, and numerous hospitals and educational foundations. His work has aided causes ranging from the fight against multiple sclerosis to supporting children’s health initiatives. alan-chin.com

RIZZOLI UNVEILS A NEW BOOK OF POWERFUL DOLCE&GABBANA BLACK+WHITE IMAGES. —STEPHEN KAMIFUJI

In a stunning tribute to the power of black, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have unveiled their magnum opus, NERO: The Color of Dolce & Gabbana. This sumptuous tome, by luxury book publisher Rizzoli, is a veritable feast for the eyes—a testament to the enduring allure of fashion’s most enigmatic hue.

The designers, whose partnership has become as iconic as their creations, have curated a visual odyssey that spans decades and continents. From the sun-drenched streets of Sicily to the glittering world of haute couture, the book weaves a narrative that is at once intimate and grand.

Luminaries of photography, from Helmut Newton to Mert & Marcus, have lent their visionary talents to capture the essence of Dolce & Gabbana’s noir aesthetic. Their lenses have immortalized not only the glitterati—Monica Bellucci, Kim Kardashian, and Madonna among them—but also the quotidian beauty of ordinary lives, all united by the designers’ obsidian thread.

This is not merely a fashion book; it is a philosophical exploration of duality. Black, in the hands of Dolce & Gabbana, becomes a paradox—simultaneously sensual and austere, tragic and romantic. It is this complexity that has defined their brand and now defines this extraordinary volume.

At 544 pages, NERO is as weighty as its subject matter, a coffee table book that demands attention and invites contemplation. It is, in essence, the distillation of Dolce & Gabbana’s ethos—a way of seeing, questioning, and ultimately, of life in black and white.

CELEBRITY CHEFS COLLAB WITH MESSERMEISTER TO BENEFIT THEIR FAVORITE CHARITIES

—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI

Messermeister, a women-owned, Ojai-based cutlery company, has launched the FORGE initiative, a philanthropic program combining knife-making with celebrity chef collaborations. The initiative partners with three renowned chefs: James Beard Award-winning chef April Bloomfield, JBA-nominated chef Edward Lee, and JBA-nominated chef Claudette Zepeda, each designing a unique knife reflecting their culinary style.

Edward Lee’s knife is an 8-inch blade made of 52-layer Japanese black Damascus steel with a handle crafted from Maker’s Mark bourbon barrels. Limited to 750 pieces, it retails for $499.95. April Bloomfield’s contribution is a 6.5-inch carbon steel compact chef’s knife featuring her original artwork, priced at $199.95. Chef Claudette Zepeda’s knife has a seven-inch Nitro-B blade with an olive wood handle and a custom-made green leather and magenta sheath, selling for $299.95.

The program allocates 20% of the proceeds from each knife sale to the chef’s chosen charity. Lee’s profits support The LEE Initiative, leeinitiative.org, Bloomfield’s benefit GreenWave Org, greenwave.org, and Zepeda’s go to No Us Without You LA, nouswithoutyou.la.

Messermeister, owned by sisters Chelcea Dressler-Crowley and Kirsten Dressler Wilson, aims to blend culinary artistry, philanthropy, and craftsmanship through this initiative. The FORGE knives are available on Messermeister.com and in select retailers.

We recently connected with Emma Gawinski , our GENLUX cover star, for our quick Two-Word Interview. The Virginia-born Wilhelmina model discusses her heroes, her giving back through Operation Christmas Child, her fi rst gig at Smoothie King (she can still make a mean smoothie), and her odd recurring dream. —SK

Your GPS: Home in Culver City.

You’re wearing? I’m going on castings, so I’m wearing my favorite Paige jeans, a tight white one-shoulder top, and a pair of kitten heels. I love how Paige jeans fit, so I always wear them.

Your beginning? I was born in the small town of Stafford, Virginia. There are basically just trees and grass, a McDonald’s, and churches. When I turned 9, we moved to Forest, Virginia, about four hours south of Stafford. And that’s kind of where we ended up staying. I grew up in a pretty religious Christian household. My parents are very conservative.

Music minded? I played the cello for nine years and the flute. I was always in the school and public orchestra. Music was essential to my parents because my mom is a professional pianist. That’s been her job her whole life, so she wanted us kids to carry on what she loved to do.

Your dad? He’s an English professor at Liberty University. But he does theater on the side, too. So my parents were both in the arts, and that’s how they met.

College days? I’m almost done! I’m majoring in English and minoring in psychology at Liberty University, but these days I go online.

Bullying experience? One time in middle school, girls weren’t very nice to me. I got picked on for being tall, like when I had a little crush on a shorter boy. Or, when we’d shop at Goodwill for jeans, and they’d always be too short on me.

First job? Smoothie King. I loved that job! I started working at 14 and worked there for three years. I can make a mean smoothie.

Model discovery?

say no because where I’m from, no one ever did it. And so

A few people in my hometown reached out about modeling, but I would always say no because where I’m from, no one ever did it. And so it didn’t make sense to me that it could be a job. But when I was 17, almost 18, I had this mother agency named Evolve reach out to me, and they were like, hey, we saw your Instagram, and we’re interested in meeting you. I was about to graduate high school, and I was like, why not just give this a chance? So I said, yes, I’d love to meet, but my parents have to be there. They’re like, of course. Lacey flew out from LA to my small hometown and asked me if I wanted to sign with Next Models, which I did.

Agency switch? I was with Next for three years and wanted to stay with them, but I knew I could get more out of my modeling experience than they could offer, so I switched to Wilhelmina That’s where I am now, and I feel like I’m never going to leave.

Biggest challenge? Modeling comes with so much good, but there’s a lot of rejection. You go to many jobs where you’re really excited; you’ll be on hold for something big and won’t get it.

Modeling locations? I started out in Mexico City and then lived in London. I worked in New York, Miami, and here in LA. LA is my favorite because you can have a car, so getting around is easier. But I also really loved New York. It was just a little too cold for me.

Dream campaign? Yes, CHANEL, please!

Physical change? I’m not gonna lie; I always wish I had a little bit bigger boobs.

My loyalty. Three blessings? Number one would be my relationship with God, and then my family. And honestly, I really would say modeling. It’s given me so

Number one would be

Your faith? I pray all the time and give thanks to God. My faith is essential to me. I grew up going to church three times a week. And it just became such a regular part of my life. Our church in Virginia is called All Peoples, and my parents still go there.

Your heroes? Maybe not my heroes, but I was obsessed with Harry Styles. My best friend growing up was Ashton Lonas, and her stepmom, Monica, was a therapist and knowledgeable about people’s emotions and how to be stable. She taught me how to drive and how to cook meals. I looked up to her in a lot of ways.

First heartbreak? My boyfriend in high school who came out to LA with me, and he modeled, too. He didn’t like the industry and missed Virginia, so he went home. It was hard for me to understand at 18.

Giving back? I volunteer at the Lynchburg Food Bank in Virginia, which feeds people in need. Our family is involved yearly with Operation Christmas Child, a part of Samaritan’s Purse. We fill boxes with toys, food, candy, books, and writing for kids. And most of the time, these kids don’t get any other gifts. For us, the real joy comes from watching the videos of these children’s faces opening their boxes. We send out about 20 boxes each year. A charity event I attended last year that I’d love to be involved with more is Baby2Baby.

Your siblings? My older sister, Abby, has a heart to serve. She got her nursing degree, and then she went on this mission trip called World Race to Thailand and all over China to spread the word of God. My younger sister, Lilia, is 19 and has just started college to work on jets.

Any hobbies? Pilates and running. I go to Solid Core every day. Sometimes, I’ll do yoga. I love learning new things, listening to podcasts like Andrew Huberman, and just researching different health tips and tricks that can help you live your best life.

Secret weapon? I learned from my boyfriend the importance of a deep sleep cycle to be the most energized throughout the day.

Recurring dream? Yes, actually! I’m always dropping my phone in the ocean. I’ll be tanning by the beach, and then I’ll run into the ocean and have my phone. Sometimes, even my laptop, my AirPods, or every other electronic device possible. Sometimes, I don’t even own one, but I’ll just drop them in the ocean, too!

Skincare routine? I use CeraVe face wash. It’s light, clean, and easy to use. After working out, I have to wash my face a few times a day, so I don’t want anything too heavy. After that, I use La Roche-Posay moisturizer that you can get from Target, so it’s pretty easy. And I just drink a lot of water.

Flower or Gardener? I definitely would say both. I pick people in my life who can nurture me, but also people I would like to nurture. That way, we constantly grow together. All of the relationships I have in my life are very strategic and always lift me up, and I hope that I do the same for them.

I love glitzy and shiny fashion this holiday season: long coats, capes, and lots of jewelry, bien sûr! There are two items that I’m particularly smitten with: the Tiffany Titan by Pharrell Williams necklace. His collection draws inspiration from the mythological Poseidon’s trident; the bold designs embody energy, power, and force. I also love the sexy black fringed outfit by David Koma paired with a stunning bejeweled feather handbag. I want it so bad! Bonne rentrée mes amours! —Samia

Secret Weapon: Ceramides

As the skin is our body’s largest organ, tending to it based on the season will ensure your skin looks and feels its best. The secret ingredient to winter blues is my favorite: Ceramides! Let me share what’s unique about Ceramides and why your skin will appreciate them in winter -Ninka B, aesthetician advisor at GENLUX Beauty

1. LIPID BOOSTER!

Ceramides are lipids naturally found in the outermost layer of the skin. They are the main component of the intercellular lipids between skin cells (imagine brick and mortar: the bricks are the skin cells, and ceramides are part of the mortar), which gives them a crucial role in the skin’s well-being. Ninka B. recommends: SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2, $155, skinceuticals.com

2. COLD WEATHER PROTECTOR!

Our skin experiences low humidity, cold weather, and heated homes during winter, often leaving it dry, rough, and irritated. When your skin feels this way, its barrier is compromised, and it has difficulty retaining moisture. Protecting your skin’s barrier is crucial, and ceramides are scientifically proven to strengthen and replenish the skin with hydration. Ninka B. recommends: Avéne RetrinAL CERAMIDE Lipid-Replenishing Balm, $76, aveneusa.com

3. MORE MOISTURE!

4. LIP TIP!

My latest find for caring for the delicate skin on the lips is something every lady can have within her reach! This lip treatment, formulated with Guava, Shea Butter, and Ceramide, is made with clean ingredients. It looks and feels wonderful! Ninka B. recommends: OLIVIAUMMA Tanghulu Liptox (Guava) $15, oliviaumma.com

5. SAVE YOUR SKIN!

Over the years, many studies have supported the effectiveness of ceramides. Now more than ever, numerous products on the skincare market alleviate dryness and bring comfort to your skin from head to toe. Ninka B. recommends: SENTÉ Dermal Repair Body Cream, $110, sentelabs.com

It’s not a secret that our lifestyle affects our skin. Inadequate sleep, stress, diet, medications, and outside elements such as environmental pollution, and UV rays can all contribute to decreased ceramides. It’s crucial to be as mindful as possible to tweak our daily habits and choose skincare that works with our skin. Ninka B. recommends: BeautyStat Universal Pro-Bio Moisture Boost Cream, $50, beautystat.com

Taking care of your skin is a lifestyle. It is a way of honoring the incredible skin you are in. Wishing you a wonderful Holiday season —Ninka

Abu Dhabi Allure

I visit Abu Dhabi and connect deeply with its vibrant culture.

The United Arab Emirates is renowned for its luxurious and extravagant architecture and lifestyle. Abu Dhabi, the capital city, is establishing itself as a global center for culture and prestige. It’s a popular destination for music festivals, art exhibitions, and Grand Prix events. I connected deeply with the Abu Dhabi’s people, art, food, architecture and incredibly enriching culture.

MUST STAY:

The ultra-modern soaring glass building with “Rosewood” emblazoned on top is an unmistakable landmark on Al Maryah Island overlooking the Arabian Gulf. The Rosewood Abu Dhabi luxury five-star hotel has 189 spacious rooms and suites. My contemporary and spacious suite blended Arabian elegance with modern design. Natural light pours in through floor-to-ceiling windows, offering panoramic views of the waterfront. The open floor plan, with spacious bathroom that sports an oversized Villeroy & Boch tub, provides an elegant, relaxed and uninterrupted flow. rosewoodhotels.com

Making Footsteps in the desert where we went to drive fast cars and eat under the stars.

MUST RELAX

The Sense Spa at the Rosewood Abu Dhabi is an oasis of serenity. The exquisite ambiance, dim lighting, warm earthy tones, and the subtle fragrance of essential oils fills the air. After a long flight and feeling all the tension in my body, I opted for a Thai massage. The best! As I lay down on the plush massage table, I felt every knot and worry dissolve—leaving me in a blissful state of surrender.

Soak it Up

MUST SIP:

MUST DINE:

The CAVA Wine Bar is a cozy place with a romantic atmosphere. Enjoy a delicious dinner paired with fine wines recommended by the knowledgeable sommelier. The grilled octopus served with Romesco sauce, fresh basil, black olives, and garlic bread is delightful. My favorite dish was the deep-fried risotto balls infused with earthy porcini mushrooms and creamy Taleggio cheese, accompanied by a tangy tomato coulis.

MUST GIVE:

After dinner, sit by the Hidden Bar window overlooking the promenade and listen to jazz music in the background. The topnotch spot is the trendiest place in town. Just ask anyone. Their master gin list, featuring rare gins like the Japanese variety from Okinawa, would excite any gin enthusiast. I certainly became one real quick.

MUST EXPLORE:

There are so many things to do. Visit the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the Qasr Al Watan Palace, and the museums. I really enjoyed the Louvre Abu Dhabi (right). It’s a phenomenal architectural landmark designed by the renowned architect Jean Nouvel, showcasing ancient and contemporary art. Next door, they are planning to house a cluster of worldclass cultural assets such as the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the National Museum of the United Arab Emirates, the Zayed National Museum.

The Rosewood Abu Dhabi is deeply committed to giving back to its communities through various charitable projects. They have a long-standing collaboration with Operation Smile, an organization dedicated to providing cleft palate surgeries for children in need. The hotel encourages staff to engage in local community efforts, including beach cleanups, in collaboration with the municipality, on Reem Island and the Corniche, underscoring the hotel’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

End your day soaking in the Villeroy & Boch tub.
