Get the popcorn.
You’ve likely watched the new four-part series The Super Models on Apple TV+, the new show documenting the lives of the four teenagers who, in the 80s, influenced every phase of fashion and touched nearly every aspect of our cultural zeitgeist: Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Cindy Crawford. If not, watch it. It’s an honest and compelling—then and now— deep dive into their unique personalities. Sprinkled throughout the series are fashion designers, photographers, and editors who lived through the quartet’s magazine, marketing and runway dominance. Especially exhilarating is reliving George Michael’s Freedom music video featuring the band of sisters, followed by their collective strut down the Fall ‘91 Versace runway show lipsyncing the song. Most would consider this as the defining supermodel moment. Of the four, Linda’s story surrounding her debilitating health is the most poignant and challenging. There could easily be a fourpart documentary on her alone. Odds are you’ll zip through all four 50-minute episodes in one sitting. Go, binge it!
August 1974 was a watershed moment in fashion history. Beverly Johnson, with her unparalleled grace and poise, became the first Black model to adorn the cover of American Vogue. It was Grace Mirabella, the fearless editor-in-chief at the time, who championed this groundbreaking choice, ushering in a new era of diversity and representation. Fifty years on, Beverly remains an icon, a testament to her enduring impact on our fashion industry.
We are honored to feature Beverly on this, her third GENLUX cover, captured by the discerning eye of Marc Baptiste at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. This historic venue, with its timeless elegance, provides the perfect backdrop for Beverly’s shoot. Lisa Smith Craig styled the story in a series of striking gold ensembles, culminating in our cover shot where she dazzles in a radiant Ralph Lauren gown (“Being Beverly Johnson,” p98).
In this issue:
Speaking of supermodels, when stylist Billie Causieestko
Beverly’s enduring friendships speak volumes about her character. She has maintained a lifelong bond with her best friend Dada (seriously,
since they were infants) and has graced my life with her friendship for over 35 years. Another of Beverly’s close confidantes, Nikki Haskell, once the queen of Studio 54, is now an Instagram sensation, captivating over 500k followers with her wisdom and wit. We delve into Nikki’s vibrant world (“The Unlikely Instagram Star,” p30 ).
We also turn our lens to another Nikki. Nikki Walker, a Canadian equestrian show jumping champion. Under the creative direction of Paul Venoit and captured by photographer Luis Monteiro, Nikki’s elegance is beautifully portrayed at her Florida home (“Rise Up,” p46 ).
(“Golden Hour,” p32 ).
In LA, Holly Parker offers a refreshing take on tennis fashion. Styled by Joline Towers, the models are captured in a whimsical, yet sophisticated shoot that reimagines the traditional tennis ensemble. Forget Wimbledon whites; this is tennis couture served with a twist (“Match Play,” p60 ).
influencer Joy Corrigan chose to remove them. The decision wasn’t easy. They had become a part of her confidence, and because of her sexy Instagram persona and nearly one million followers, her life’s currency. Following our photo shoot with Joy in Beverly Hills by photographer Tray Morris, Joy agreed to share her journey with us in her own words (p74).
of technology and fashion (“Fashionation,” p52 ).
On our cover:
Our 16-page homage to Louis Vuitton is nothing short of spectacular. Photographed by Hector Amaro and styled by our brillant market editor, Jessie Ajluni, this feature takes us from the Top of the Rock Observation Deck to the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center. The team captured the beauty and elegance of Miqueal Symone, Miss Universe Jamaica 2020 (“Over the Rainbow,” p70 ).

Laurel Dewitt, though her name may not be instantly recognizable, is the creative force behind designs worn by everyone donning a boldface name, including Beyoncé and Madonna. Her husband, photographer Remi Harris, has exquisitely captured her jewelry, again styled by Lisa Smith Craig. And let’s be honest, when Beyoncé’s on your resumé, you know you’ve made it (“Making Statements,” p38 ). Photographer and cinematographer Jeff Berlin brings us a fashion story set at the ARRI studio in Burbank, utilizing their state-of-the-art video wall. The backdrop images, created using AI, highlight the fascinating intersection
It’s one thing to create a successful business, but couple that with being the wife of mega-rockstar, Nikki Sixx of Motley Crüe, and you have multi-tasker and our cover girl, Courtney Sixx (p64). The effervescent beauty and doting mother, who owns Bouquet Box (it’s like Blue Apron or Hello, Fresh for flowers), was also hands-on in producing her own GENLUX photoshoot, right down to the location, sets, and how she wanted her hair and makeup. While I don’t particularly appreciate relinquishing this much control, she confidently took the reins and won the day.
As Western fashion enjoys a resurgence thanks in part to Beyoncé’s country music charttopping success, we present a trending Western-themed shoot. Photographer John Van Der Schilden and our executive fashion editor, Mindy Saad, bring this trend to life in a way that is both contemporary and timeless (“West World,” p86 ).

T CHAIRS WITH RED-SOLED HEELS HONOR ICONIC WOMEN.
—STEPHEN KAMIFUJI
Christian Louboutin and Pierre Yovanovitch unveiled their exclusive chair collection at the chic Pierre Yovanovitch Mobilier. The collaboration, featuring nine unique chairs, each a tribute to iconic female figures from history, includes the ancient Queen Nefertari and the modern Dita Von Teese.
Christian and Pierre also introduced the “Simply Nude” series, chairs offered in five shades of wood, echoing the diverse skin tones of women worldwide. These pieces embody resilience and beauty, each inspired by feminine strength.
A notable highlight of the collection is the integration of Louboutin’s iconic red-soled heels on the feet of each chair, merging fashion with furniture in a playful yet profound nod to the designer’s legacy.

The Unlikely Instagram Star
The indefatigable Nikki Haskell starts her viral Instagram posts with, “I’m in my 80’s,” before honoring her followers with sage advice on love, “getting your shit together,” and sucking the marrow out of life. We spend the afternoon with @bignikbh and cull this treasure trove of Nikki-isms from our conversation. —SK
“If you’re going to ride the roller coaster of life, you might as well do it in the front row, with a glass of champagne in hand and Instagram open on your phone.”
“I’m in my 80’s, but who’s counting? Age is a state of mind, and mine is all about living fabulously.”
“I turned $18,000 into $2 million in the stock market. Who says glamour and brains can’t go hand in hand?”
“Studio 54 was like a magnet for the fabulous. I was there opening night, and it was like stepping into another world—a world where the night never ended and the stars always shined.”
“Wall Street wasn’t ready for a woman like me. But ready or not, here I came, and I danced my way through the glass ceilings.”
“Every post I make on Instagram is a mini-memoir of a life well-lived. From Beverly Hills to Wall Street, I’ve danced at every party and brokered more than just stocks—I’ve brokered dreams.”
“I’m in my 80’s, which means I’ve had decades to perfect the art of living well. Every day is a new chapter in a fabulous memoir.”
“You can’t buy style, but if you could, I’d probably own the store by now.”
Nikki Haskell, the fabulous octogenarian with the energy of a millennial and sequins to match has turned a glamorous Beverly Hills upbringing and a sharp stock market play into a life filled with celebrity encounters, Studio 54 disco nights, and now, Instagram fame. Known for her quotable wit, Nikki, a er turning $18,000 into $2 million, once quipped, “I turned divorce lemons into Wall Street lemonade.” Today, Nikki charms over 500k Instagram followers with
“My formula for longevity? A splash of sass, a dash of class, and a whole lot of refusing to act my age.”
“Life isn’t just about the number of breaths you take, but the moments that take your breath away. And I’ve had more than my fair share of those!”
“I’ve waltzed through decades of trends, but my spirit has always danced to the beat of its own disco ball.”
“In the symphony of life, I’ve always made sure my notes are the loudest and most memorable.”
“Remember, darling, being fabulous is the best accessory you can ever wear, and it goes with everything.”
“I’ve lived through the disco era and the digital age. Glitter may have gone out of style, but glamour never does.”
“Never underestimate a woman with a stock portfolio and a killer pair of heels.”
“I don’t look back—unless it’s to see how far I’ve come. And darling, it’s been a spectacular view.”
“Remember, the more candles on your birthday cake, the brighter you shine. Age adds sparkle; it doesn’t dim the lights.”
“The secret to staying young? Live generously, laugh often, and never, ever forget to dance when you hear your favorite song, even if it’s just in your heart.”
her vibrant blend of throwback glam and new adventures. Her posts o en start with, “I’m in my 80’s, but who’s counting?” reflecting her timeless flair and irreverent humor. Nikki uses her platform to share life lessons and style tips, proving that “age is a number, but style is eternal.”
Celebrating life beyond 80 with panache and a glass of champagne, Nikki, who very likely never turned down a night at the disco, turns every day into a party on Instagram. G

30-year-old Canadian horse-jumper and all-around sports enthusiast Nikki Walker was born to be an equestrian champion. Her grandfather, Frank Stronach, founded the family thoroughbred business, The Stronach Group, and her mother, Belinda, is CEO of 1/ST, owner of racetracks including Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park. Here, Nikki tackles our GENLUX two-word interview, and shares about her life and goal to compete in the 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles. —SK
Your GPS? I’m at my second home in Wellington, Florida, where I spend most of my winters. Out the window, I see a paddock with a couple of horses, the barn, and the training area. There’s a 12-week-long showjumping circuit here with some of the best riders in the world.
You’re wearing? I just finished training, so I’m in my equestrian clothes. I have on Dada Sport breeches and a sun shirt. I always try to shade myself to avoid a farmer’s tan or sun damage.
Fashion sponsors? Hermès is the biggest one, and they sponsor many of the classes I compete in. Over the years, riders have been sponsored by Gucci, Loro Piana, and Ralph Lauren—impressive brands intertwined with the equestrian world.
First job? Working in the barn after school. I would get up early, clean the horse stalls, feed the horses, put them in the paddocks, and groom them. It taught me a good work ethic and discipline. The animals rely on you, so I’ve cared for them my whole life.
Your sign? I’m a Scorpio.
Best trait? I think positivity. If anyone is going through a difficult time, as everyone does in life, I help them focus on positivity. We’re lucky to live the lives we live, so that’s the positive outlook I tr y to maintain.
First car? An Audi Q5.
Spoiled child? Let’s say I was a fortunate child. My parents believed that if you wanted something, you had to work for it, but they were very fair, too. I think I worked hard as a kid and into my teenage years, but I’m also very blessed.
Embarrassing moment? In junior kindergarten, I remem-
ber peeing my pants, and I was so embarrassed. Many years later, I thought, you know, people probably don’t remember that from junior kindergarten. Well, not so long ago, someone referenced it, and I was like, uh, thanks for remembering!
Everyday style? I mostly wear equestrian clothes because I ride every day. I’ll wear jeans and a fitted top with Filli Fabri custom riding boots. Going to dinner, it’s an easy-going dress with a pair of low heels. My go-to shoe is a white sneaker for a crisp look.
Favorite heels? I love the classic YSL tribute heels because you can comfortably wear them from morning to night. They come in all different colors and heights.
Favorite brand? Right now, I love anything, Miu Miu.
Guilty pleasure? Anything chocolate! I love dark chocolate. I’ll eat a little piece every day, and a chocolate cake gets me every time.
Binge watching? The New Look on Apple TV+. It’s based on World War II, when Christian Dior’s sister was captured and in a concentration camp.
Taste preference? Between sweet, sour, or salty, I’m probably more sweet.
Charity work? I’ve been involved with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, where I was on the board for five years. I’ve been on the communications and funding committee for thoroughbred aftercare—the rehoming of racehorses after their career on the track. TAA accredits different thoroughbred farms that do aftercare. I believe 86 farms have rehomed over 16,000 thoroughbreds and raised over
$30 million. These thoroughbreds race up to six but can live up to 30 years.
six horses for compet-
Your horses? I have six horses for competing, and six others that are retired, so I go for the odd trail
Horses fly? They travel much better than you would think they would. They go into a regular stall for two horses, so they have a buddy. They’re on pallets loaded onto cargo planes or planes specifically for horses. There’s a human flying with them to get food and water.
Favorite getaway? I love anything adventure, like ski trips. I grew up going to Beaver Creek in Colorado, and my dad often went there. My other favorite is Muskoka, north of Toronto, where we live.
Your hobbies? I’ve always been the sportier type. I’m not good at just sitting around. I grew up playing soccer and gymnastics, and now, I love doing yoga and snow skiing. I also love water sports like surfing, swimming, wake surfing, and boating.
Your heroes? My parents, my coach and Olympic medalist Cian O’Connor, and Serena Williams. I’ve always looked up to Serena. She’s an incredibly strong figure who paved the way for female athletes.
Character change? By nature, I’m not a morning person, so I’d love to spring out of bed fresh as a daisy—it’s so hard for me.
Physical change? My knees aren’t the greatest. If I could have just a bit stronger joints, that would keep me healthy and athletic. I broke part of my leg and injured my left knee, falling off a horse.
You’ve fallen? They say you must fall off a hundred times before being a good rider. I’d say I’m probably at about 40-50 falls. You’re constantly bouncing off your pony when you’re a kid, and it’s no big deal. With age, the falls hurt a little more the next day. The adage is true: you gotta get back on the horse.
I’m traveling to
Europe to participate in riding competitions. My family is starting a new horse race in California at Santa Anita Park called the California Crown. We also have our big racetrack and race called the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in Florida. They’ve been going on for eight years now. So we’re going to have some very cool partnerships—that’s also something we’re really looking forward to.
Flower or gardener? Right now, I’m the flower because I’m pretty busy with competitions, and my boyfriend, who is such a saint, comes to visit me and nurture our relationship.
Career goal? The 2028 Olympics in LA. That would be the ultimate dream and goal.

Being Beverly Johnson
IN THE SUMMER OF 1974, BEVERLY JOHNSON BECAME THE FIRST BLACK MODEL ON THE COVER OF AMERICAN VOGUE. SINCE THEN, SHE’S COVERED MORE THAN 500 MAGAZINES, INCLUDING THIS ONE—HER THIRD FOR GENLUX. SHARING A FRIENDSHIP OF OVER 30 YEARS, OUR STEPHEN KAMIFUJI CATCHES UP WITH BEVERLY, WHOSE SPIRIT AND BEAUTY, LIKE FINE WINE, JUST GET BETTER WITH AGE.

From her spacious Palm Desert home of twenty years, Beverly Johnson, clad in cut-off jeans and Beverly Hilton slippers, shares a candid glimpse into her day. Her attire, a deft blend of casual elegance and comfort, seems to echo the dual nature of our conversation: both a reflection on her past triumphs and an easy discourse on the quotidian. “Just another day in paradise,” she remarks with a levity that belies the weight of her experiences.
Beverly navigates effortlessly through a kaleidoscope of memories, each splashed with the vibrant hues of her extensive career. She lingers on the tactile details of her earliest modeling challenges, particularly the limitations of photographic technology that often failed to capture the richness of her complexion. “Back then, Kodak film’s contrast levels just weren’t there for black skin,” she recalled. “Luckily we had photographers who worked magic with lights.” Among these were luminaries like Francesco Scavullo, Albert Watson, Patrick Demarchelier, Annie Leibovitz, Victor Skrebneski, Bill King, and Richard Avedon, each leaving an indelible mark on her storied career.
This year heralds the fiftieth anniversary of a seminal moment both in Beverly’s career and in the broader narrative of fashion: her appearance as the first black model on the cover of American Vogue in August 1974. The achievement, under editorship of Grace Mirabella, was not merely a personal victory but a loud proclamation in the silent chambers of an industry then marked by homogeneity. “That cover wasn’t just a job for me; it was a statement. We were screaming, ‘Here I am!’ to the world,” Beverly states, reflecting on the cover’s enduring legacy in championing diversity and inclusion.
Our conversation veers toward her personal style, which Beverly describes as an infusion of her own “spice” into the fabric of her life. This philosophy extends beyond her wardrobe, encapsulating her approach to her public persona and private introspections. Her career has seen her top a nearly unfathomable 500 magazine covers, a testament to her iconic status, with recent work including this, her third appearance on the cover of GENLUX magazine.
Yet, the road to such accolades was fraught with skepticism from some corners of the fashion industry. Beverly recounts how, early in her career, model maven Eileen Ford told her bluntly that she would “never be on the cover of American Vogue .” Unbowed, Beverly left Ford Models for Wilhelmina, where she met Wilhelmina Cooper—a former model turned agent who greeted her with “feet propped on a desk, a cigarette in one hand, and a slice of pizza in the other.” This pivotal move to Wilhelmina’s more progressive agency catalyzed the breakthrough that led to her historic Vogue cover, underscoring a narrative of resilience and audacity.
Beverly’s reflections on her childhood revealed the contours of her formative years, marked by her family being among the first black residents in a predominantly white neighborhood. She and her childhood friend Dada (still besties to this day) faced not only the commonplace struggles of youth but also the acute sting of racial isolation. A particularly visceral memory she shared involved a physical altercation with classmates, a moment that crystallized her resolve to confront adversity head-on. “As we got off the bus, they jumped us, and we had no choice but to fight back, one bully at a time,” she recounts, a fierce determination permeating her tone. Years later, one of the worst of the culprits would become her friend.
Despite her outgoing façade, Beverly confessed to a natural inclination toward introversion. “You know, I’ve always much rather stayed at home with my books and my dogs,” she admits. This dichotomy is balanced by friends like Instagram sensation Nikki Haskell, who coax her into the limelight and help her navigate the social demands of being Beverly Johnson.
Beverly contemplates the legacy of her pioneering work. “Every challenge, every ‘no,’ every door slammed in my face just reminded me of why I had to succeed. Not just for me, but for every little girl who looks like me and needs to know she can be anything she dreams.”

So you ask: What is the absolute TOP- of-theline paddle? According to Joey B. at The Pickleball Exchange, the most luxurious of paddles is the JOOLA GEN 3! $295, joolausa.com
Two and a half years ago, I found this funky li'l class in the Valley teaching what was this NEW paddle sport called Pickleball! I bought a cheap paddle from Amazon and was off to the races! It was the absolute funnest sport I had ever played!! The sport has blown up to EPIC proportions, and I feel like I was in at the beginning of this runaway pastime, only to find out that it's been around for 20-plus years! Oh, well, I still feel really cool, and I want you to also! Let me share with you the only thing you need to start this exhilarating paddle sport—luxury version!!
MADE IN THE SHADE!
PLEASE...
do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy your first pickleball paddle on Amazon (like I did). The Pickleball Exchange in Encino is the ONLY store where they have every racket (paddle) ever made, and you can try that paddle on the spot. The owner, Joey B., knew what his customers needed when he created this store with a mini court where you can dink, serve, and hit with the on-staff pro (or, if you're lucky... Joey himself). You can test the size, grip, and weight of the paddle. If Joey thinks you may not be happy in the future with your purchase... he will talk you out of it. He has talked me out of so many paddles, shoes, and balls (the soft sell at The Pickleball Exchange is an understatement). I wish every store had integrity like this shop!! The ONLY Pickleball clothes I've bought are ... BESO SHADE! With SPF 50 in all the fabrics and the hottest colors under the sun ... BESO SHADE , you have stolen my PickleHeart! The designs are fabulous... as they should be when one of the original supermodels, Kelly Emberg, is at the helm. Kelly knows what works on the female body, and with her love of the sport ... she knows what works on the court! Thank you, Kelly, for designing THE Best Pickleball Outfits out there! P.S. Not having to wear sunscreen where the clothes cover is an absolute GOD send! For all styles and pricing ... go to besoshade.com

BEAUTY SKINCARE
Ingredient Spotlight: Hyaluronic Acid
Summer encourages us to take a gentle approach to treating our skin. One of my favorite skincare ingredients, Hyaluronic Acid, is a perfect addition to the season’s regimen. Below, you will find out why.
-Ninka B, aesthetician advisor at GENLUX Beauty
1. STAY HYDRATED
Youthful skin is hydrated skin. Hydration can come from various sources, including inside out, such as maintaining a healthy diet and daily water intake. Supplements can also help the body stay hydrated and protected from the inside out. Another way for our skin to stay glowing is to apply Hyaluronic Acid in various forms, such as a serum, mask, or cream. Ninka B. recommends: Tata Harper Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer, $130, neimanmarcus.com
2. NO TEWL ZONE!
During summer, the skin is exposed to stronger sun rays, travel, and outdoor activities. The skin naturally loses its hydration during this active season. This process is known as transepidermal TEWL. This scientific term measures how much water evaporates from the skin. Hyaluronic Acid is an ingredient that prevents TEWL, meaning it assures that hydration will not escape from your skin’s surface, keeping your skin supple. Ninka B. recommends: SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Mask, $70; SkinCeuticals Hydrating B 5 Gel, $90, dermstore.com
3. SUN-SAFE SERUM
Adding products with hyaluronic acid will safeguard your skin with the proper amount of hydration that feels light and it will revive dull skin, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, it has a plumping effect which we all love. As a result, the skin looks fresh and youthful. Most importantly, it is gentle and beneficial for all skin types. Even the most sensitive skin can receive its benefits. Plus, summer can be harsh on our skin, and Hyaluronic Acid is sun safe. Ninka B. recommends: NATURA BISSÉ Inhibit Tensolift Neck Serum, $370, net-a-porter.com
Wishing you a dewy skin and fantastic summer adventure. -Ninka B, GENLUX aesthetician advisor.
